New boss, same as the old boss "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Elon Musk has announced that he has found a replacement CEO for Twitter, currently rumored to be an ad executive name Linda Yaccarino. That could change. Musk is a dorky flibbertigibbet who might change his mind depending on how the rumor is received.

It doesnt matter, though. Nothing will improve.

  • Hes personally selecting a CEO, which means it will be someone who aligns with his views.
  • Whoever he hires will be under his control, and hes a micromanaging tyrant.
  • Whoever he hires will be subject dismissal if she crosses him.
  • He has driven the company so far into the ground, both in income and reputation, that theres no hope.
  • Its a Musk decision. Every decision he makes is terrible.

I feel pity for anyone who gets lured into this position, although, given the kind of person whod willingly associate with Elon Musk, I suspect any sympathy would evaporate after their first day on the job.

UKC News: Desperation of Zelensky + Turkeys Election May Transform Geopolitics "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Western efforts in Ukraine appear to have stalled, as a visibly disheveled President Zelensky continues to read his wartime script, as the elusive Spring Offensive still fails to materialise despite endless hype from NATO-aligned mainstream media and politicians, all of who are becoming increasingly desperate to sell a victory to western electorates. Also, Turkeys crucial elections are coming up this weekend, in a political contest which may determine the future of the country and the region. All this and more.

US mulls sanctioning Arab League for Syria normalization efforts "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | May 12, 2023

There are very few things that have been as unifying for Americas political establishment as the belligerent thalassocracys propensity to impose sanctions. Republicans and Democrats will almost always be at each others throats for virtually any issue, but when it comes to sanctions, particularly against the Syrian people, their unity is unquestionable. For well over a decade, the unfortunate Middle Eastern country has been at the forefront of Washington DCs regime change efforts, with the United States using everything from sanctions and financing various moderate democratic opposition forces (i.e. head-chopping terrorists) to direct attacks on Syria and its armed forces.

Unfortunately, the Arab League actively took part in this comprehensive attack on a fellow Arab country and it took years of active Russian and Chinese diplomatic efforts to have the organization reengage with Damascus. In the last couple of months, there have been several major breakthroughs in this regard, culminating with announcements that Syria will be readmitted into the organization. President Bashar al-Assad even visited several prominent Arab countries, some of which previously played an extremely active role in attempts to oust him. The likes of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia went from Assad must go! to Were happy to see Assad stay in mere months.

And while Damascus must tread carefully when reengaging countries that actively took part in a comprehensive aggression against it, this opportunity is something that should not be missed. As previously mentioned, it was only thanks to the sustained diplomatic efforts of the multipolar world that this inter-Arabic conflict came to an end, inflicting a devastating blow to US plans for Syrias destruction. However, the warhawks in Washington DC are far from giving up. Top GOP and DNC members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee are pushing for a bipartisan initiative to sanction anyone taking part in Syrias full diplomatic reinstatement. Since May 8, they made several announcements about this.

The bipartisan group is now urging President Joe Biden and his deeply troubled administration to impose crippling sanctions on any state or entity engaged in attempts of normalizing relations with Syria. Expectedly, the initiative is led by one of the most prominent neocon warmongers, Texas Republican Michael McCaul.

Readmitting Assad to the Arab League is a grave strategic mistake...

Coverage of Gender-Affirming Care Is an Unequal Patchwork "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

Transgender people who are trying to get their insurance plans to cover their transition-related health care face a fragmented landscape.

Consider: A transgender retiree on the state of Arizonas health insurance plan is generally covered for transition-related surgery. But an active state employee is not.

Some of the health plans that the state of West Virginia offers its employees do cover transition-related care, but others dont.

If youre a transgender employee of Georgia's state university system, you are covered for gender-affirming care by its insurance plan, but other state employees dont have that coverage.

The discrepancies illuminate the challenges transgender people face in accessing and affording gender-affirming care, which can include services like long-term hormone therapy and chest and genital surgery. Major medical associations recognize the necessity of those services for transgender people and the harm that can result from prohibiting them. Meanwhile, as conservative state lawmakers propose and pass restrictions on gender-affirming care for both children and adults, transgender people are watching their options for care narrow even further.

We still have a lot of people who think that this stuff isnt real or that its immoral or sinful and that it shouldnt be covered, said Christine Yared, an attorney who has represented transgender plaintiffs against employers that dont cover gender-affirming care. Changes to these policies, she said, often result from pressure from the ground up.

Within some states, different state agencies have made conflicting decisions either voluntarily or as a result of lawsuits on whether their various health plans will cover gender-affirming care.

Federal courts have consistently ruled that employers cannot categorically exclude gender-affirming care from health care plans, often referencing federal policies on employment and health...

Whats Our Best Bet in 2024? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Dan McKnight | The Libertarian Institute | May 12, 2023

Did you see what Donald Trump said about Ukraine?

At a CNN town hall on Wednesday evening, the former president and current candidate announced:

If Im president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours. Ill meet with Putin, Ill meet with Zelensky, they both have weaknesses and they both have strengths, and within 24 hours that war will be settled. Itll be overI dont think in terms of winning or losing. I think in terms of getting it settled so we stop killing all these people and breaking them.

When CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins asked Trump if he wanted Ukraine or Russia to win this war, he responded, I want everybody to stop dying. Theyre dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them stop dying. And Ill have that done in 24 hours, Ill have it done. You need the power of the presidency to do it.

Thats a damn good answer. And a much better one than anyone in the Biden White House has presented for why weve spent over a hundred billion dollars to fight a war with Russia.

These corporate press stand-ins never explain what victory conditions look like for Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky has said his aims include the recapture of Crimea and the decapitation of the Russian state.

Saying No to War "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Janet Parker, Isthmus, May 12, 2023

Note: Janet Parker is organizer with Madison for a World BEYOND War in Madison, Wisconsin, where this was first published by Isthmus.

I locked up the church doors, then tucked in to sleep on a small open spot on the floor of the sanctuary, between chairs and right next to a huge east-facing window. It was Friday night, March 24, the first day of a regional anti-war event Id helped organize, the 20th Midwest Catholic Worker Faith and Resistance Gathering. I was there hoping to help prevent nuclear war.

People had converged from eight states at a church on Old Sauk Road. Friends old and new greeted each other with smiles, hugs, and shrieks of joy. We ate dinner, then watched Theaters of War, a new documentary about how the Pentagon and the CIA use Hollywood to promote the U.S. military.

I slept, cozy on a camping pad and under a comforter, with a shirt rolled up as a pillow. I woke up around midnight to open the door and greet Chrissy, Lindsey and Theo, young Catholic Worker activists whod driven from St. Louis. They carried in sleeping bags and got settled.

I woke up briefly again in the very early morning. Outside the big window snow had started to fall thickly. By morning a foot had accumulated, beautiful and heavy on the evergreens, roofs and roads. At 6:30 a.m., Barb and Mike from northern Wisconsin arrived to cook breakfast. We carried in boxes of banana bread and cartons of eggs, and a lively day of work began.

We would spend the next three days together learning, reflecting, and preparing to act on Monday.

Working against militarism in the U.S. can be daunting. People sometimes ask me, Isnt it depressing? I think its depressing to not speak out against war. Speaking out gives me hope.

We are in an unprecedentedly dangerous time, in a proxy war with Russia. Last year after Russias brutal invasion of Ukraine, friends and I started doing war abolition walks in Madison to call for a ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine, and an end to all war. Weve done 28 walks since last April. We hold signs that say, Defuse Nuclear War and Weapons Makers Are the Only Winners. Weve start...

UK Shipment of Long Range Cruise Missiles to Ukraine Radically Changes the Conflict "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Gilbert Doctorow | May 12, 2023

Americans have taken umbrage at the now commonplace habit of Russian media personalities to speak of Anglo-Saxons as the principal opponents, or enemies if you will, of their country. In Russia the term is meant to include the USA. Given the high percentage of Blacks, Hispanics and Orientals in the U.S. population, there is some substance to American objections. However, as regards the British, they have not a leg to stand on: they are Anglo-Saxons like it or not. And by their behavior towards Russia right to the present day, they have well earned the intense dislike bordering on hatred that a large swathe of influential Russians feel towards them.

First you had Boris Johnson, who ruined the nearly agreed peace accord between Russia and Ukraine back in March 2022. Boris threatened to put a stop to Western assistance to Kiev if Zalensky took the draft treaty through to signature. Zelensky then backed out of the negotiations and went all out for war.

Now we have Prime Minister Sunak sending long range cruise missiles to Ukraine supposedly to help them succeed with their counteroffensive and recapture lost territory from the Russians. The missiles are to be fitted onto existing Ukrainian Soviet era jets and have a 250 km range. This will theoretically enable Ukrainian forces based in Kharkov or Zaporozhie to deliver highly destructive warheads to anywhere in Crimea, for example.

Yes, you may say, but the Ukrainians already have been making daily drone attacks on Sevastopol. However, the new missiles will be far more deadly and less easy for air defense to bring down because of the inherent advantages of their speed, very low altitude and variable flight paths.

The new weapons are potentially a game changer in a way that the Leopard or Abrams tanks that have attracted so much public attention over recent months are not.

Why a game changer? Because with each incrementally more powerful artillery or tank delivered to Ukraine the Russians could say they only meant that Russia would have to push the Ukrainian border back that much further to keep Russian territories safe from attack. But there is no way for the Russians to push back the line of confrontation with Ukraine 250 km in the short term. That might be possible in a matter of months if not years. But in the meantime the missiles could do vast damage in purely Russian territories and create enormous numbers of casualties among both civilians and military.

I can easily imagine the popular reaction in Russia of a Ukrainian rocket attack on Sevastopol that killed, say 400 civilians. There would be a great public uproar and it is hard to see how the Kremlin could avoid responding wi...

Africa Rising: Nkosi Mandela on South Africa Resisting Israeli Apartheid "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

In 1999, South African anti-apartheid activist and revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela visited Gaza and said, We know too well our freedom is not complete without the freedom of the Palestinians.

Since his death in 2013, Mandelas unifying message of decolonization reverberated across the globe. The anti-colonial, anti-apartheid struggle that he led to end racial segregation and transform South Africa into a democratic nation has been lauded by Palestinians, who have drawn parallels between Israeli occupation and apartheid to the situation that Black South Africans faced.

Joining Mnar Adley for this weeks MintCast interview to discuss the struggle against Apartheid and the continued struggle against colonialism is Nkosi Mandla Mandela, who, since 2009, has been a member of the South African parliament for the African National Congress Party. He is also the grandson of Nelson Mandela.

On Wednesday, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor called on the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders responsible for Operation Shield and Arrow, last weekends series of airstrikes against the Gaza Strip.

Over 20 Palestinians have been killed so far since Israel began bombing the worlds largest open air prison. Entire families were killed in their sleep, including children, and several neighborhoods flattened to rubble, leaving many communities homeless.

As the world witnesses yet another massacre committed by the apartheid state, South Africa and other African nations are rising in the fight against Israels occupation of Palestine.

Earlier this year, the African Union asked its member states to cut scientific, cultural and even some economic ties with Israel until it reverses its colonial practices against Palestine.

Nkosi Mandela has been one of the worlds most outspoken voices against Israeli apartheid and in support of Palestinian liberation. Join us today for this informative discussion.

New satellite images released from Nasa this week showcase the dramatic reappearance of California's Tulare Lake after water swallowed swaths of land across the state's agricultural center that had long been dry. Taken between the start of February and the end of April and colored artificially to help distinguish the water from vegetation and bare ground, the images highlight the scale of the transformation across the region still grappling with the aftermath of this winter's heavy rains and snow. This isn't the first time the "ghost lake" has caused widespread flooding, but the onslaught of weather whiplash wreaked havoc on residents, agricultural workers and farms - and it's far from finished. Tucked against the Sierra Nevada's white-capped peaks, the region will have to reckon with surges of snowmelt filling its waterways as the weather warms. On Thursday, the snowpack in the southern Sierra was 436% of normal for this time of year, according to California's department of water...

New & Free Publication: Peacebuilding Practice: A Textbook for Practitioners "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Women Peace Makers, May 12, 2023

Note: This new book includes a chapter co-authored by World BEYOND War Education Director Phill Gittins.

This book was inspired by the Women Peace Makers (WPM) 2020 intervention that explored history from a young persons perspective in an inter-ethnic setting in Cambodia. That gathering demonstrated that the past deeply affects who we are today and how we interact with others and with ourselves. The 1975-1979 genocide and the following decades of civil wars, in particular, have shaped a society scarred by trauma, warfare, and survival, while the educational system was in a complete collapse.

This book offers a brief overview of concepts of peacebuilding while introducing teachers and learners to the various tools and types of interventions utilized in the field that are culturally responsive to the Southeast Asia context and demonstrate the complex nature of peacebuilding. It is meant to co-create spaces that support meaningful and challenging dialogue, as well as hopeful and transformational spaces. The book has two overall objectives:

1) To explain theoretical aspects that support nonviolence and peacebuilding.
2) To show how theory is applied in practice in a SE Asia context.

This multidisciplinary collection of essays examines peacebuilding through a variety of ways of knowing. Each chapter is structured in the same way. It grounds itself in a Cambodian quote or proverb that sets the tone for that chapter. Each chapter starts with theory, states the purpose of the chapter, and highlights 2-3 points. Then the chapter moves the theory into practice within a SE Asian context describing the situation or scenario that supports the topic, as it offers a description of the thoughts and feelings of communities. Lastly, it details what actions were made to support the topic or resolve the situation.

What the Email Security Landscape Looks Like in 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Email-based threats have become increasingly sophisticated, how is changing the Email Security Landscape?

For over a decade, email has been a common source of cybersecurity threats. During that time, email-based threats have become increasingly sophisticated. What started as notes from Nigerian princes that needed large sums of money to help them get home has evolved into bad actors that use refined social engineering tactics to convince the receiver to unknowingly share important information. Its not likely to stop there.

Recently, VIPRE Security Group published their Email Security in 2023 report, where they shared insights on the development of email-based threats and how they can impact organizations. What follows is an overview of some of the key findings from the report and some of the things businesses can do to protect their employees and data.

Email Threats Are Becoming More Sophisticated

There are a number of ways that email can be leveraged to compromise the security of an organization, but the most prominent approach is phishing. In a phishing attack, an individual receives an email from a sender that seems legitimate with a request to share information, log into a system, or click a link. In this email, the bad actor pretending to be the sender may nefariously capture the individuals authentication details or prompt a malicious download that then compromises the system. At this point, the bad actor has access to the information they were after.

Today, according to the Verizon 2022 Data Breach Investigation Report, phishing is one of the leading five tactics used to initiate data breaches. Its a trend thats growing. In 2022, email phishing attacks made up 24% of all spam emails up from 11% in 2021. Given that phishing requires a relatively low lift for attackers, and has a fairly decent rate of return for them, its no surprise that there has been an increase in this trend.

The prevalence of phishing attacks has been bolstered by a number of risk factors, including:

  • Insider threats whereby disgruntled or compromised employees leverage their position in the company to get access to certain items. They can use their corporate email and their insider knowledge to make requests to others using social engineering.
  • Domain compromise, where attackers compromise a website or newly registered domain to create seemingly legitimate communications and links.
  • Phishing-as-a-Service has emerged as a model thats standardizing the underground economy and making it easier for bad actors to access phishing and hacking services.
  • QR code spoofing. Bad actors are starting to...

This Week in Security: TPM and BootGuard, Drones, and Coverups "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Full disk encryption is the go-to solution for hardening a laptop against the worst-case scenario of physical access. One way that encryption can be managed is through a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a chip on the motherboard that manages the disk encryption key, and only hands it over for boot after the user has authenticated. Weve seen some clever tricks deployed against these discrete TPMs, like sniffing the data going over the physical traces. So in theory, an integrated TPM might be more secure. Such a technique does exist, going by the name fTPM, or firmware TPM. It uses a Trusted Execution Environment, a TEE, to store and run the TPM code. And theres another clever attack against that concept (PDF).

Its chip glitching via a voltage fault. This particular attack works against AMD processors, and the voltage fault is triggered by injecting commands into the Serial Voltage Identification Interface 2.0 (SVI2). Dropping the voltage momentarily to the AMD Secure Processor (AMD-SP) can cause a key verification step to succeed even against an untrusted key, bypassing the need for an AMD Root Key (ARK) signed board firmware. Thats not a simple process, and pulling it off takes about $200 of gear, and about 3 hours. This exposes the CPU-unique seed, the board NVRAM, and all the protected TPM objects.

So how bad is this in the real world? If your disk encryption only relies on an fTPM, its pretty bad. The attack exposes t...

Chinas Government Calls US Government an International Outlaw "IndyWatch Feed War"

Wang Wenbin, Chinas Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, held his regular press conference in Beijing, on May 11th, and answered a reporters question: It was reported that the G7 Summit to be held in Japan will ask China to abide by international rules. Do you have any comment? by saying that those countries are hypocritical for accusing others of violating the never-defined stock phrase of the U.S. Government international rules. He said:

The US has spied indiscriminately on countries globally, not least its G7 allies, strong-armed countries diplomatically, and applied economic coercion and military interference. The US has blatantly invaded Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria and other countries that are smaller and weaker than the US, killing and displacing tens of millions of innocent civilians. When it comes to international rules, the USs place is in the dock. It is in no position to point fingers at other countries.

His statement that When it comes to international rules, the USs place is in the dock suggests that international rules means the same thing as international laws, but the U.S. Government, and its allies, have never defined what the term international rules means, nor what international body sets those rules, nor where they are codified, nor what they are. If those rules are international laws, then it would be easy to document which Government violates them more than any other Government does, because obviously that is the U.S. Government itself.

Wenbins answer also included the following:

When the G7 talk about international rules, they mean the Western rules that draw lines according to ideologies and values and the US-first and G7-dominated rules of a small circle. Those rules serve the vested interest of a very few countries, including the G7, rather than the common interests of the international community.

By the international community, he was referring to the General Assembly of the United Nations. It is the U.N., and not the U.S. Government, which establishes those laws. Wengbin opened his answer by talking about that:

Before discussing international rules, we need to first of all make clear what exactly the international rules are. For the overwhelming majority of countries in the world, international rules consist of the basic norms governing international relations b...

US-backed Military once again Targets Deposed Pakistani PM Imran Khan "IndyWatch Feed War"

Imran Khan poses the greatest threat to Pakistans military monopoly on political power.

The arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI) caused thousands of Pakistanis to take to the streets and protest. However, Pakistans Supreme Court ordered on May 11 his release, offering a significant victory for the onetime leader responsible for bringing Islamabad closer to Moscow and away from US dominance until his removal from power.

On May 9, Khan was detained and arrested for the alleged embezzlement of 50 billion Pakistani rupees  ($240 million). This unleashed a wave of violent demonstrations in several cities in the country and threatens to unravel the fragile state.

The current situation is taking place against the background of several military coups because the army continues to play an essential role in the critical decisions of state policy. These internal factors had an even more substantial effect on the situation than the fact that Khan was trying to pursue an independent course in foreign policy, particularly with Moscow, whilst deepening his countrys dependency on Beijing. In addition, his domestic policy is rejected by elite military circles that maintain close ties with Britain and the US.

The former prime minister at first did not depend on any political party, and, in fact, he challenged traditional political and military circles. In Pakistan, there are two older parties: the Pakistan Muslim League and the Pakistan Peoples Party, which, apart from the military, have maintained political power.

Khan, a former cricket star, emerged as a revolutionary by deciding that Pakistan needed to choose another path and divorce itself from Western dominance.

Pakistani voters protested after Khan was removed from power in a soft coup on 10 April 2022 and continued to support him vehemently. Now, the protesters continue to demonstrate against his targeting. Through imprisonment, Khan would have been prevented from participating in the political struggle because the military had already made its position clear preserving the status quo, i.e., their own personal interests.

As for the US relationship with Pakistan, the latter is vital for the Americans as it is a state that directly borders Afghanistan and influences what is...

Ending War on Earth in Illinois (Or Any Other Locality) "IndyWatch Feed War"

Al Mytty in Illinois during webinar for which these remarks were prepared.

By David Swanson, World BEYOND War, May 12, 2023

We very much need World BEYOND War educational and activist events and campaigns in Illinois (and every other location). We also need the people of Illinois (and every other location on Earth) as part of the global movement to end war.

I say that having been in Chicago many times and at least once to Carbondale. Interstate 64 which comes by my house also cuts through Illinois, so a few cups of coffee and Im there.

We started World BEYOND War in 2014 to work with thousands of existing peace groups but to do three things a bit differently. One is to be global. Another is to go after the entire institution of war. Another is to use education and activism, both and together. Ill say a few words about each of these things.

First, on being global. Theres a great peace activist named Bill Astore who has an article this week at TomDispatch where he suggests that if we rid the world of nuclear weapons he could like his country better. I also read yesterday a book by my old philosophy professor Richard Rorty, probably the smartest person in many ways Ive ever met, who simply obsesses over the need to view U.S. history as a glass half full, even if it means believing in myths and ignoring ugly facts. Unless one does that, he writes, we cannot do the work of creating a better country. He never even entertains long enough to reject it the possibility of staring at all the facts head-on and doing the work regardless (is the question of whether a country has done more harm or more good even answerable?). Nor does he ever even consider the possibility of identifying with the world or a locality more so than a nation.

What I love most about online World BEYOND War events is that people use the word we to mean we people of the Earth. Now and again, youll have someone always its someone from the United States use we to mean a military always its the U.S. military. As in Hey, I remember you from that jail cell we were in for protesting the fact that we were bombing Afghanistan. This assertion would seem like a riddle to a Martian who might wonder how one can bomb Afghanistan from a jail cell and why one would have also protested ones...

Leak of MSI UEFI Signing Keys Stokes Fears of Doomsday Supply Chain Attack "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

With no easy way to revoke compromised keys, MSI, and its customers, are in a real pickle:

A ransomware intrusion on hardware manufacturer Micro-Star International, better known as MSI, is stoking concerns of devastating supply chain attacks that could inject malicious updates that have been signed with company signing keys that are trusted by a huge base of end-user devices, a researcher said.

"It's kind of like a doomsday scenario where it's very hard to update the devices simultaneously, and they stay for a while not up to date and will use the old key for authentication," Alex Matrosov, CEO, head of research and founder of security firm Binarly, said in an interview. "It's very hard to solve, and I don't think MSI has any backup solution to actually block the leaked keys."

The intrusion came to light in April when, as first reported by Bleeping Computer, the extortion portal of the Money Message ransomware group listed MSI as a new victim and published screenshots purporting to show folders containing private encryption keys, source code, and other data. A day later, MSI issued a terse advisory saying that it had "suffered a cyberattack on part of its information systems." The advisory urged customers to get updates from the MSI website only. It made no mention of leaked keys.

Since then, Matrosov has analyzed data that was released on the Money Message site on the dark web. To his alarm, included in the trove were two private encryption keys. The first is the signing key that digitally signs MSI firmware updates to cryptographically prove that they are legitimate ones from MSI rather than a malicious impostor from a threat actor.

This raises the possibility that the leaked key could push out updates that would infect a computer's most nether regions without triggering a warning. To make matters worse, Matrosov said, MSI doesn't have an automated patching process the way Dell, HP, and many larger hardware makers do. Consequently, MSI doesn't provide the same kind of key revocation capabilities.

Game Changer: Exploring the New Paradigm for Deep Space "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Game Changer: Exploring the New Paradigm for Deep Space

The game changer for space exploration in coming decades will be self-assembly, enabling the growth of a new and invigorating paradigm in which multiple smallsat sailcraft launched as rideshare payloads augment huge flagship missions. Self-assembly allows formation-flying smallsats to emerge enroute as larger, fully capable craft carrying complex payloads to target. The case for this grows out of Slava Turyshev and teams work at JPL as they refine the conceptual design for a mission to the solar gravitational lens at 550 AU and beyond. The advantages are patent, including lower cost, fast transit times and full capability at destination.

Aspects of this paradigm are beginning to be explored in the literature, as Ive been reminded by Alex Tolley, who forwarded an interesting paper out of the University of Padua (Italy). Drawing on an international team, lead author Giovanni Santi explores the use of CubeSat-scale spacecraft driven by sail technologies, in this case lightsails pushed by a laser array. Self-assembly does not figure into the discussion in this paper, but the focus on smallsats and sails fits nicely with the concept, and extends the discussion of how to maximize data return from distant targets in the Solar System.

The key to the Santi paper is swarm technologies, numerous small sailcraft placed into orbits that allow planetary exploration as well as observations of the heliosphere. Were talking about payloads in the range of 1 kg each, and the intent of the paper is to explore onboard systems (telecommunications receives particular attention), the fabrication of the sail and its stability, and the applications such systems can offer. As you would imagine, the work draws for its laser concepts on the Starlight program pursued for NASA by Philip Lubin and the ongoing Breakthrough Starshot project.

Image: NASAs Starling mission is one early step toward developing swarm capabilities. The mission will demonstrate technologies to enable multipoint science data collection by several small spacecraft flying in swarms. The six-month mission will use four CubeSats in low-Earth orbit to test four technologies that let spacecraft operate in a synchronized manner without resources from the ground. Credit: NASA Ames.

The Ocean Heat Bomb Ignites "IndyWatch Feed War"

Global warming and extensive overfishing have damaged ocean ecosystems well beyond recognition from only a few decades ago. Still, on its own accord, the ocean stood tall for over 3 billion years. But, alas, in less than one human lifetime it is teetering like never before, and credible studies claim the worlds oceans could be devoid of life within only three decades. This is one of the most troubling transformations of all time, nothing compares to it, absolutely nothing!

The ocean heat bomb is all about the impact of global warming and overfishing, neither of which is high enough on to-do lists of countries to help sustain ecosystems. It should be noted that Wall Streets embrace of going green for a profit wont come close (not enough scale soon enough) to solving the global warming problem, but theres plenty of green to be made. By all appearances, the love affair with fossil fuels is a permanent fixture, according to IEA data, fossil fuels constitute ~80% of energy over the past 50+ years with no change as of 2023. And a reality check: Big banks and investment firms have joined the ranks of companies making net-aero pledges. But their huge stakes in oil and gas projects are undermining their climate promises. (Source: How Wall Streets Fossil-Fuel Money Pipeline Undermines the Fight to Save the Planet, Fortune, February 2, 2023)

Moreover, as if an overheated ocean is not enough of a headache, overfishing is totally out of control, nearly wiping out several species, e.g., over 11,000 sharks killed per hour at risks of extinction in part for a brew of tasteless shark fin soup.

The oceans are a gigantic heat sponge, absorbing 90% of planetary heat, enabling life to go on within its 10,000-yr Goldilocks Holocene cycle, not too hot not to cold. But times are changing very rapidly. For the first time that scientists recall, sea surface temperatures that always recede from annual peaks are failing to do so, staying high with scientists warning that this underscores an underappreciated but grave impact of climate change. (Source: Record Sea Surface Heat Sparks Fears of Warming Surge, Phys.org, May 4, 2023)

Year by year ocean warming is increasing at an absolutely staggering rate, Jean-Baptiste Salle, Research Scientist, CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research), Ibid.

Scientists are now warning that human-generated greenhouse gases are demonstrably exposing the worst possible scenario with the ocean turning into a global warming heat bomb. What goes around comes around. It appears that the ocean heat bomb has ignited.

According to US NOAA observatory recordings, in early April 2023 average surface temperatures of the oceans, excluding polar waters, hit an all-time high of 21.1C (70F). More than a passing interest, that all-time high might be goosed much higher by an upcoming El Nio weather phenomenon, triggering the ocean heat bomb...

Ammonia is generally associated with a technological breakthrough of the past. As the key building block of nitrogen-based synthetic fertilizers, it played a critical role in feeding a rapidly growing global population over the twentieth century. Now, some see ammonia as having the potential to make a sizeable impact in the transition away from carbon-intensive fossil fuels.

For that to happen, the current production process will have to change, as the overwhelming majority of ammonia is produced from natural gas. The world currently produces about 175 million tons per year of fossil-fuel based ammonia mostly for use as fertilizer, and this releases vast quantities of greenhouse gases.

As the demand for low-carbon energy sources grows, clean ammonia referred to by advocates as either green or blue ammonia, depending on how it is produced is expected to dramatically increase in production. Developers in the U.S. have proposed the construction of 15 new ammonia plants, mostly in Texas and Louisiana, to produce ammonia for fuel, according to public records and data available in the Oil & Gas Watch database as of May 1, 2023.

Green ammonia is created from water, nitrogen from the air, and renewable energy like solar or wind to produce the ammonia molecule, NH, and is thus virtually carbon free. However, this process requires vast amounts of very pure water and large, albeit renewable, energy inputs.</p> <p>So-called blue ammonia is ammonia produced with natural gas and nitrogen from the air, but with the carbon footprint allegedly reduced through the capture and storage of the carbon dioxide emissions. Because carbon capture and sequestration technology is largely untested and unproven on a large scale, blue ammonia produced with natural gas is less climate-friendly than green ammonia made entirely with solar or wind power.</p> <p>The focus for many clean ammonia advocates is to use the hydrogen in ammonia to help produce clean hydrogen fuel, which burns without releasing any greenhouse gases. Ammonia is easier to ship in l...

The Birds are Shrinking! "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When I was getting my biology degree, I was very much focused on ecology. Life on this planet is a complex, shimmering web of interaction and interdependency; pluck one strand, and the whole world vibrates. As organisms, we all affect both each other, and also the abiotic world around us. Some species, like humans, have bigger effects than others, but the reality is that you cannot study one organism without, at least in part, accounting for the others that live around it.

Later, when I was working as a curriculum developer, I wrote climate science lessons that viewed the issue through an ecological lens. See, while there was still mainstream debate over whether the planet was warming, wildlife around the globe was already actively responding to changes that a lot of people either didnt notice, or were able to dismiss in their own minds. By focusing on ecosystems, we were able to show, over a decade ago, that the planet was warming, and that the effects of that warming were already measurable in the wildlife around us. I still think it was a good project, but the US public education system has little room to try new things, and is utterly clogged with testing. Add to that the difficulty in getting funds for this sort of work, and its hard not to feel like we were doomed from the start. That perspective on climate change, however, is still useful.

At the time, a lot of the research we were looking at related to changes in migration timing, ecological mismatch, and species range shifts. More recently, scientists have been tracking changes in body size and shape, driven by the warming of our planet. The latest example is a study showing that birds, at least in the Americas, are getting smaller, with longer wings:

The study combines data from two previously published papers that measured body-size and wing-length changes in a total of more than 86,000 bird specimens over four decades in North and South America. One study examined migrating birds killed after colliding with buildings in Chicago; the other looked at nonmigrating birds netted in the Amazon.

Though the two datasets are nonoverlapping in both species composition and geography, and the data were collected independently using different methods, the birds in both studies displayed similarly widespread declines in body size with concurrent increases in wing length.

Now, a new analysis of the combined data has revealed an even more striking pattern: In both studies, smaller bird species declined proportionately faster in body size and increased proportionately faster in...

The Work That Tricontinental Does "IndyWatch Feed War"

I am grateful to you for reading this newsletter, which has been coming to you since March 2018 and which now thanks to the efforts of our movements reaches over a million people. Our first newsletter posed a problem that remains at the heart of our institutes work:

The Left has before us a serious challenge: people think that we are good and sensitive people, but that we are utopian and fail to provide reasonable answers to practical problems. We have to overcome this penalty. We have to show that radical thinking is not merely utopian (and has no place in reality), but that it attempts to solve practical challenges given the constraints of property and power. It has to show, more importantly, how certain problems cannot be solved within these constraints and require more ambitious transformations of the political and economic system. This kind of thinking guided by political and social movements will be at the heart of the institute.

Over the course of the past sixty-two months, we have tried our best to hold fast to this mission. To this end, we set for ourselves a series of objectives:

  1. To bridge the gap between movements and intellectual institutions.
  2. To bridge the gap between movements across the planet.
  3. To amplify the voices of the new intellectuals who lead these movements.
  4. To elaborate the theories that are often implicit in these movements.
  5. To reclaim the histories of socialism and national liberation.

These objectives ground our work. We hope that what we have researched and produced has been useful to those committed to strengthening our movements and advancing...

Tunisian political prisoner Said Ferjani sends plea for solidarity

Kaouther Ferjani tells MEE charges against her father are 'politically motivated' and based on 'flimsy evidence'

The daughter of Tunisian political prisoner Said Ferjani has released an open letter from her father, calling on opponents of President Kais Saied to take a clear stance against oppressive authoritarianism.

The free world must stand by innocent free people who are being accused of conspiracy," Kaouther Ferjani wrote.

Ferjani, a prominent leader of the largest opposition party Ennahda, was arrested in Tunis in February 2023 on several charges, including money laundering, attempting to change the nature of the state, and undermining external State security, among other accusations.

His arrest came amid an escalating crackdown on journalists, politicians, activists, lawyers, and the judiciary, in the wake of Saieds 2021 seizure of power, in what critics have called a constitutional coup.

The letter was dictated to Ferjanis lawyers during a prison visit, but due to intimidation by the authorities, his daughter only saw it a month later.

Kiev tries to disguise the failure of its counteroffensive plan "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Lucas Leiroz | May 12, 2023

In a recent interview to a Western media outlet, the head of the Kiev regime stated that his country needs more time before starting the counteroffensive against Russian troops. According to Vladimir Zelensky, the Ukrainian forces would be ready to start the move, but before that they need to receive more equipment and wait for the ideal conditions for action to emerge which is obviously a contradictory, ambiguous and unsubstantiated narrative.

Zelenskys words were spoken during a conference with the Eurovision News Network and were then reported by the BBC. The Ukrainian president claims that he could give orders to launch the counteroffensive now, but that would mean too many casualties for Kiev, which is why it seems more prudent to wait for more favorable conditions to arise in the future. At the time, Zelensky also emphasized the importance of receiving more armored vehicles from the West, which would operationally facilitate the counteroffensive.

Another interesting point of the interview was Zelenskys response when asked if he has been under pressure from his western partners to resume negotiations in case the counterattack plans fail. The president suggested that his army would continue fighting regardless of the outcome of the counter-offensive and said that no Western country could pressure Ukraine to surrender territories to Russian forces. Zelensky also said that Moscow intends to freeze the conflict, as it would be territorially favored, which supposedly will be prevented by the counteroffensive.

Wed lose a lot of people [if we started the counteroffensive now] () I think thats unacceptable. So, we need to wait. We still need a bit more time () [Western powers] cant pressure Ukraine into surrendering territories, he said.

The most curious thing about Zelenskys narrative is how extremely contradictory it is. At one moment the president says that his country is ready to start the maneuver and at another he says it needs to wait. Either Kiev is ready to start an effective counterattack, or in fact it is not and needs to wait for better conditions in the future. There is no possible synthesis between both possibilities. This confused and irrational rhetoric sounds like a desperate attempt to have control over the military situation of the conflict, when in fact this control does not exist.

Also, by reaffirming that Kiev will continue to fight to recover the territories liberated by Russia, Zelensky makes it clear to the Western media that, in practice, the outcome of the counteroffensive does not matter. Even if the plans fail, Ukrainian forces will continue to be forced to fight and keep looking for virtually unattainable results. And, as Zelensky himself stated, no western power is opposed to that &#821...

Something More than the Cheese "IndyWatch Feed War"

Stung by Trump's Trade Wars, Wisconsin's Milk Farmers Face Extinction - The New York Times
Are you the people with that black pick-up with the white camper?

Hes a short red-bearded white cop standing over me and my friend, KK (initials to be revealed soon). We are in KKs hometown, Merrill, Wisconsin, population 9,300.

Whats up, officer?

We have a complaint from a resident who says you were on his property taking pictures of his house and a juvenile daughter.

So begins the morning in Merrill, or at least, after a few hours of photographing KKs old haunts with a borrowed Canon his schools, churches, and, yep, the house he grew up in. It was 9 am when I got him to stand on the sidewalk to photograph KK in front of the small house where he spent his youth. It was his grandparents home. Small, sort of shotgun clapboard style no with faded vinyl siding.

Four shots, and we took off, turned for some of the street scenes where he played, and, then we moved on out with the pick-up and my shutterbug disease.

I call these drive-by shoots, so we drove and then stopped, posed, and then shot film. He is a 65 year old who I met on the internet who has been a good friend, a good reader of my stuff, including books, for more than a year. His wife died in October 2022, in River Falls, where they moved to decades before leaving Merrill, hometown for both of them. Merrill is his and his deceased wifes birthplace and family locales. Bad memories for KK, and I dont know about his wife, Cheri.

The owner of the home accused you have trespassing, stepping on his lawn and photographing his teenage daughter. He is wanting you arrested.

Welcome to America, and sure, I knew Id get out of this stupidity, but what flashes in my mind is the mindlessness of America, the flyover states policing and politics, the rural places with contradictory values, old sagging towns with closed businesses, tired homes, and more which I will cover in this series. Lots of strip malls and drive-thru food joints you see all over America.

Im a journalist, and I have been taking photos of Merrill the past few hours, and I can tell you we did not go on the lawn, and I was photographing KK who is from Merrill. I saw no girl in a window, and there is no girl in a window in the four shots I took of a guy out in front of his childhood house.

The house owner said his daughter was upstairs, wondering what you were photographing and said you photographed her.

The conversation when from here and there, and we gave up our IDs, and alas, yeah, KK is an ex-con (with air quotes), ten years be...

The Art Of Innovation: How Scientific Research And The Arts Can Collaborate To Generate Innovations "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Marketing and business. In marketing, businesses can use art and science to create compelling, memorable and emotionally resonant campaigns. By leveraging scientific knowledge of consumer behavior and psychology and using art to create visually striking and emotionally engaging advertisements, businesses can create marketing campaigns that are both effective and memorable.

Artificial intelligence (AI). AI design involves scientific research to develop algorithms and models that simulate human intelligence and decision-making. However, AI design requires artistic input to create user interfaces, visualizations and other interactive features that engage users and make AI more accessible. For example, an AI-powered virtual assistant may require an appealing visual interface to help users interact with the system more efficiently, such as graphic design, animation and other visual arts, to create a user-friendly pleasing interface. Moreover, AI-powered applications and systems can incorporate creative design and artistry elements to enhance functionality and appeal (generative AI algorithms can generate music or art or analyze and interpret cultural trends and patterns.)

The intersection of scientific research and art is exciting for generating novel business ideas. By bringing together different perspectives and skill sets, it is possible to create a more comprehensive and innovative approach to problem-solving. Whether through interdisciplinary research or using art as a tool for communication, the possibilities for collaboration are endless. The art of innovation is not about creating something out of nothing but finding new and unexpected ways to combine existing elements. By embracing the intersection of science and art, we can unlock a wealth of possibilities for the future of business by leading in new business ideas leveraging on new technologies, materials and creative solutions to problems. The integration of these domains enables the formation of groundbreaking and lucrative business concepts that can revolutionize industries and enhance individuals well-being.

After signing a declaration in Saudi Arabia, the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces returned to fighting

Smoke rises after an aerial bombardment in Khartoum North, 12 May 2023 (Reuters)

On Thursday night, a declaration of commitment was signed in Jeddah by Sudan's warring factions, following nearly a week of talks mediated by hosts Saudi Arabia and the United States.

This declaration was not a ceasefire. As if to underline that fact, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary returned to their war on Friday, with air strikes and artillery rounds pummelling the capital Khartoum.

None of the six humanitarian ceasefires announced by the United States and Saudi Arabia during the course of the conflict has so far held.

Neither Sudanese side has released a statement acknowledging the deal, which was signed on behalf of the army by Rear Admiral Mahjoub Bushra Ahmed Rahma and for the paramilitary by Brigadier General Omer Hamdan Ahmed Hammad, who is the brother of RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemeti.

The two men did not shake hands after signing the document, but instead posed for photos with Saudi officials while US negotiators hovered in the background.

Turkish opposition presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu shocked many on Thursday when he openly accused Russia of trying to interfere with Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections in two days' time.

Russian friends, you are behind conspiracies, deep fake content and tapes that were revealed in this country yesterday, Kilicdaroglu tweeted in Turkish and Russian. If you wish for our friendship to continue after 15 May, take your hands off the Turkish state.

On Friday, the Kremlin denied Kilicdaroglu's allegations.

Moscow does not interfere in the internal politics of other states, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Peskov said Kilicdaroglu's sources were liars and Russia valued its ties with Turkey enormously.

Later, Kilicdaroglu told the media that he has concrete evidence to back his claims, saying he wouldn't have blamed Russia otherwise.

For more than 75 years, Palestinians have organized for a liberated future. Today, as resistance against Israeli apartheid intensifies, unity and revolutionary optimism has become the main infrastructure of struggle.

alt
Melbourne, Australia. Image credit Matt Hrkac CC BY 2.0.

It is nearing the 75th commemoration of the beginning of the Nakba, and Palestinians have mourned at least 150 martyrs since the beginning of 2023. Currently, 4,900 Palestinians are detained in Zionist jails, including 160 children. But for Palestinians on the ground and those of us in exile, the revolutionary optimism remains, underlying a long, arduous, steadfast struggle for liberation.

Since the Unity Intifada of 2021, we have witnessed a clear, systematic rise in popular armed resistance in Palestine. With it comes a necessary reckoning with the current phase of the Palestinian struggle for liberation from Zionist settler-colonialism. Unity among Palestinians has characterized the Unity Intifada, as the name suggests. Palestinians are unified against the Zionist project, in spite of the deliberate, systematic fragmentation imposed upon them.

The notion of unity, especially regarding armed struggle, prisoner revolt, and labor revolt, is what consistently rings the loudest. It rings loudest despite a colonial separation wall, military checkpoints, and indiscriminate detainments by the Zionist state and the comprador Palestinian Authority (PA). It rings despite a genocidal blockade on Gaza, and the imposition of arbitrary colonial categoriesIDs, passports, permits, and laissez-passers.

After the martyrdom of 18-year-old resistance leader Ibrahim Al-Nabulsi in August 2022, the Lions Den made its first appearance in public. Heeding Ibrahim Al-Nabulsis call to action, a grassroots, youth-led, revolutionary armed faction sprouted from the occupied West Bank cities of Nablus and Jenin. We long recognize these cities as two nuclei of Palestinian resistance. The conditions of 75 years of brutal settler-colonialism birthed Ibrahim Al-Nabulsi,...

Chile Announces Plan to Nationalize Lithium Industry "IndyWatch Feed War"

In a surprising though not unprecedented move, Chile announced plans to nationalize its lithium industry, following similar efforts in resource nationalism among major producers of battery metals. Although implementation of the reforms is expected to be gradual and keep existing contracts intact, the decision stands to influence the political will and feasibility for other lithium producers to follow suit. In seeking to indigenize and retain a greater portion of the value chain in their mining sector, the policies instituted by Chile and other lithium producers have significant implications for the global energy market as demand for electric vehicles and renewable infrastructure soars.

At present, Chile possesses the worlds largest lithium reserves and is the 2nd largest producer, behind Australia. In its return to resource nationalism, Chile seeks to secure its domestic supply and maximize revenue generation from this strategic resource, positioning itself as a leading player in the global battery metals market. Santiagos move toward greater state control of critical minerals precedes a similar phased plan for copper nationalization dating back to the 1950s and ending with the military coup in 1973 that removed the left-wing government of then-President Salvador Allende.

The Era of Social Media Journalism Is Over "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the early 2000s, a significant media-business mistake emerged: the belief that website traffic is a commodity like oil, which would generate increased revenue as advertising improved. However, unlike other commodities, traffic lacked scarcity. The internet made traffic virtually infinite, posing challenges for new media-business models.

In this weeks WhoWhatWhy podcast, Ben Smith, former founding editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed, former media columnist for The New York Times, and author of Traffic: Genius, Rivalry, and Delusion in the Billion Dollar Race to Go Viral, discusses the rise and fall of new media like Gawker and BuzzFeed, the impact and consequences of megaplatforms like Facebook and Twitter, and the shifting landscape of contemporary journalism.

Smith examines the fluctuating trust in legacy news brands and the growing power of individual voices over faceless institutions, drawing parallels to developments in Hollywood, sports, and politics. Smith highlights the recent decline in both social medias influence, and as a destination for news and information, and how this has led to more readers visiting homepages directly. He also emphasizes that conservative media outlets appear to have derived the most valuable insights from the social media era, adapting their strategies to thrive in the changing landscape.

Looking ahead, Smith suggests that journalism must help beleaguered consumers navigate the vast information landscape by providing context and a clear voice. He speculates that this may involve a return to some of the principles of print journalism concision and an editorial perspective while adapting to the digital eras demands.

YouTube Now Warns Users That Ad Blockers Aren't Allowed "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

An experiment that could become permanent:

YouTube's annoying ads often push those who don't want to pay $120 for YouTube Premium to use ad blockers. But Google isn't happy about this potentially lost revenue, and has decided to experiment with a feature that urges ad-blocker users to think again.

Redditor Sazk100 posted a screenshot earlier this week showing a YouTube popup warning that ad blockers are not allowed on the platform. It notes that ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide, and that an ad-free experience is available via the paid-for YouTube Premium. The message finishes with two options: Allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium, which is $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year for access to original programs and no ads.

Some users who've seen it say they have been able to simply close the pop-up and continue blocking ads on YouTube, but it's likely that Google will clamp down on this, or make the pop-up appear regularly enough to be a distraction.

The moderators of the YouTube subreddit wrote that an employee had confirmed the ad-blocker message was an experiment by YouTube. A Google spokesperson expanded on this in a statement to IGN.

"We're running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium," they said. "Ad blocker detection is not new, and other publishers regularly ask viewers to disable ad blockers."

While most online companies make their revenue from ads, some complain that YouTube has gone too far, citing its increasing number of unskippable and extended mid-roll ads.

No Community Should Have To Wait a Year or More To Take Action After a Traffic Death "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Flickr/Tony Webster.)

The lack of urgency shown by local officials in response to dangerous conditions on their streets is a disturbing recurring theme we are seeing since we launched the Crash Analysis Studio. This pattern is not unique to the horrific crashes nominated in the Crash Analysis Studio. Rather, its a consequence of standard practice in managing public streets. When bad things happen, we need to be prepared to take immediate action.

I understand some of the reasoning behind the cautious pause approach of the typical city engineer. Public streets are a huge financial investment used by all residents. When an improvement is proposed, it makes sense to fully study all the possible outcomes on paper before you mobilize a bulldozer or roll asphalt. The intent of this approach is well intentioned so we can do it right the first time.

At Strong Towns, we describe this as a top-down approach, one which is very orderly. Each request to modify or improve a street is reviewed in the order it is received. Regardless of the scale or complexity of the request, all of the same thorough studies and reports are completed. For example, something as small as the request to...

Helion Energy will provide Microsoft with fusion power starting in 2028 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Helion, the clean energy company with its eye firmly on the fusion prize, announced a couple of years ago that it had secured $2.2 billion of funding to help it develop cleaner, safer energy at a commercial scale in November 2021. Today, it is starting to reap the fruits of its labor, announcing an agreement to provide Microsoft with electricity from its first fusion power plant, with Constellation serving as the power marketer and managing the transmission for the project.

Fusion has been the energy goal for over 60 years, as it produces next to no waste or radioactivity while processing and is far less risky than fission. But achieving the same process that occurs in stars has proved mighty difficult to contain, with it taking more energy to keep the reaction under control than it can generate. Progress has been slow and steady, with the potential rewards keeping companies such as Helion focused on the reaction. Helion has been working on its fusion technology for over a decade. To date, it has built six working prototypes and it expects its seventh prototype to demonstrate the ability to produce energy in 2024.

With this in mind, Helions plant is expected to be online by 2028 and has a power generation target of 50MW, or greater, with a one-year ramp-up period. While that might seem a long way into the future still, its significantly sooner than the projections had suggested.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses his supporters during a rally ahead of the 14 May elections, in Ankara, 30 April (Reuters)

When the Turkish presidents people looked at the polling in June last year and saw that their ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had dropped below the 30 percent mark, they became worried.

Annual inflation was surging, the Turkish lira was depreciating and people were unhappy. Many interviewed by Middle East Eye back then didnt know how Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could make a comeback in time for Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections.

But Erdogan and his lieutenants developed a plan: they boosted wages for the public and private sector, flooded the market with cheap credit for home buyers, launched an amnesty on unpaid taxes, and began a major public sector recruitment drive.

And to stabilise the lira, they funded the central banks backdoor methods by taking money from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Azerbaijan.

Populism worked. The AKPs ratings rose month by month, jumping by six points between June and January.

Potential Impact on Major Pirate Sites as Vietnam ISPs Face New Responsibilities "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Pirate FireAfter spending more than 16 years implementing intellectual property laws introduced in 2005, amendments to intellectual property law in Vietnam came into effect on January 1, 2023.

At that point, however, implementation was still to be determined so, over the past few months, the government has been drafting decrees.

Issued by the government in late April, Decree No. 17/2023/ND-CP offers guidance on various copyright matters related to ISP liability and enforcement measures, including disclosure of customer information. At first blush, it appears to herald a new world of opportunities for rightsholders.

Most Voluminous Copyright Decree Ever Issued in Vietnam

Global IP services firm Rouse reports that with 8 chapters and 116 articles, Decree 17 is the most voluminous copyright decree ever issued in Vietnam.

[T]he Copyright Decree provides significantly detailed guidance on copyright enforcement, especially which disputes can be classified as a copyright dispute, how to establish acts of copyright infringement, and how to calculate damages caused by infringements, the company reports.

The long, detailed section in copyright assessment is also expected to pave the way for the growth of the currently limited copyright assessment services in Vietnam.

Hollywood studios and publishers of Japanese anime and manga have long complained of difficulties enforcing their rights in Vietnam. However, if the new amendments take shape as the Decree suggests, Vietnam may be on the cusp of a whole new era.

For rightsholders struggling to tackle major piracy platforms including Fmovies, 9anime, and BestBuyIPTV, the balance of power may have begun to shift.

Internet Service Providers

Given that pirate site operators can be difficult to identify, rightsholders believe that entities providing infrastructure services, such as connectivity or hosting, should shoulder some responsibility for infringement, if they are in a position to act but fail to do so.

According to a report from IP experts at Baker McKenzie, Article 198b of the Amended IP Law as laid out in Decree 17 broadly identifies an ISP as a mere conduit, caching, or on-demand digital content storage/hosting service. Entities that qualify for ISP status include cloud storage providers, social network providers, and search engines.

Aqueous Matters: Europes Water Crisis "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Europe is joining a number of other regions on the planet in suffering a prolonged water crisis; and it is one that shows little sign of abating. To this can be added the near catastrophic conditions that exist in other parts of the globe, where ready and secure access to water supplies is more aspiration than reality.

Since 2018, according to satellite data analysed by researchers from the Institute of Geodesy at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), the continent has been enduring increasingly dire drought conditions. Groundwater levels have been, according to the institute, low, despite the occasional dramatic flooding event. Even through winter, there has been no relief.

In a piece published in Geophysical Research Letters, Eva Boergens and her fellow authors picked up on sharp water shortages in Central Europe during the summer months of 2018 and 2019. In the summer months of 2018, Central and Northern Europe experienced exceptionally dry conditions [] with parts of Central Europe receiving less than 50% of the long-time mean precipitation.

In July and August that year, vicious heatwaves aided in inducing drought conditions. Much the same pattern was repeated in 2019: below-average precipitation, beating heatwaves in June and July. The consequences for such deficits in water, the authors note, are severe to agricultural productivity, forest management, and industrial production, with the latter cut back by disrupted transport on inland waterways due to extremely low water levels. Levels since have barely risen.

The researchers from TU Graz also note the bleak picture from prolonged drought, one all too familiar to those inhabiting dry swathes of land on such continents as Africa and Australia. The dry riverbed and bodies of stagnant water are becoming more common features of the European landscape. Aquatic species are losing their habitats and ecological disruption is becoming the norm.

From the human perspective, the water crisis has also encouraged an energy shortage. The French nuclear industry has prominently struggled with inadequate supply, even in the face of a parliamentary bill to accelerate the construction of new reactors. As Marine Tondelier, national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV, Greens), declared on March 7, Once and for all, lets say it, simply and firmly: at this rate, there will soon not be enough water in our rivers to cool the nuclear power plants!

In Spain, the countrys weather service, Aemet, has concluded that the situation....

Controlled Burns Help Prevent Wildfires, Experts Say. But Regulations Have Made It Nearly Impossible to Do These Burns. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Colorados snowcapped Rockies towered in the distance on a crisp April day as firefighter Emilio Palestro used a torch to ignite damp prairie grass within view of a nearby farmhouse and a suburban neighborhood.

Propelled by a breeze, orange flames crackled up a ditch bank, devouring a thick mat of dead grass, cornhusks and weeds. It was neither too windy, nor too humid, nor too hot a rare goldilocks moment for firefighters to safely clear irrigation ditches of weeds, grasses and brush that can block the flow of water and spread wildfire.

At this time of year, its a race against what we call green-up, said Seth McKinney, fire management officer for the Boulder County Sheriffs Office, as eye-stinging smoke curled over newly emerging shoots of grass nourished by a wet winter. We are threading that needle to find the right time in between a rainstorm, red flag conditions when winds, temperatures and dry conditions magnify wildfire risk and snow melt.

McKinney is trying to prevent conflagrations like the Marshall Fire, the most destructive wildfire in the states history, which killed two people and incinerated 1,084 residences and seven businesses in December 2021. That fire ignited in overgrown grasslands crisscrossed by unkempt ditches, which together spread flames into urban areas with unprecedented speed, according to scientific simulations and eyewitnesses.

These data rates are made possible by using laser communications, which packs information into the oscillations of light waves in lasers, instead of using radio waves like most space communications systems.

This Japanese Company Believes It Can Catch Up With Chipmakers Like TSMC by 2027 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The rebirth of Japan's semiconductor industry depends on it:

A little-known Japanese company called Rapidus aims to mass produce 2nm chips just two years after the likes of Samsung, TSMC, and Intel. Many in the industry consider that an impossible task, but one of the two men leading the company believes it's just a matter of focusing on being the first to break ground on new process technology kind of like TSMC. Rapidus also has the benefit of being at the center of Japan's strategy to conquer advanced semiconductors, meaning it will see plenty of subsidies over the coming years to fund its ambitions.

Back in 2021, the Japanese government said it would make it a top priority to reboot the local semiconductor industry, which was once a dominant force on the global market. Despite hosting more chip factories than an other country, Japan has fallen behind when it comes to mass-producing chips on advanced process nodes. To put things in perspective, Japan's share of global semiconductor sales has shrunk from 50 percent in 1988 to about 9 percent in 2022.

Meanwhile, Taiwan has become the world leader in this area, mostly thanks to TSMC. The country currently makes more than half of the world's semiconductors, and that figure is over 90 percent if you look at chips made using the most advanced process nodes. South Korea has a much smaller share of the overall market, but dominates when it comes to memory chips, thanks in no small part to companies like Samsung and SK Hynix.

That said, industry veteran Tetsuro Higashi says he's building a semiconductor company that can catch up with the likes of TSMC and Samsung in just four short years. Despite being 73 years old, Higashi is determined to show that Japan has what it takes to rejuvenate its chip industry and help it regain its edge.

Drugged-Up and Ready to Kill "IndyWatch Feed War"

Mike Whitney The Unz Review May 11, 2023

Psychiatric treatment and psychiatric drugs are the common denominator of the growing number of shootings and other acts of violence, which are soaring right along with the soaring prescribing of psych drugs. Killers on Psych Drugs

Heres a question that every American should be able to answer: What percentage of the killersthat have carried out mass shootings across the United Stateswere on powerful psychiatric medications?

  • a1%
  • b25%
  • c50%
  • d75% or more

Why dont we know the answer to this question? Doesnt the United States have more mass shootings than any country in the world?

  • Yes, it does.

And arent these shootings the source of great suffering and anxiety?

  • Yes, they are.

And dont most people genuinely want to know why these lone gunman feel compelled to kill innocent people?

  • Yes, they do.

Then, why dont we know? Whyafter more than two decades of these bloody incidentsdo we still not have a definitive, thoroughly-researched answer to this one simple question: How many of these mentally-disturbed killers were on dangerous psychiatric medications?

Instead, the media pursues a line of inquiry that fails to reveal anything even remotely conclusive about the gunmans actions. If white supremacy or Nazi ideology impacted the killers decision to go on a deadly shooting spree in Texas, then why didnt he target a black community center or a Jewish synagogue? Wouldnt that have been more consistent with his alleged ideology?

Yes, it would have been, which suggests that his alleged ideology is a symptom of his fragile mental condition not the primary factor driving his behavior. The reason these people go on crazed killing sprees is because they are damaged goods not because they are ideologues. Theres a big difference.

So, why does the media keep harping on this silly the idea that the killers behavior was effected by his feelings about white supremacy or Nazi ideology? Its ridiculous, after all, the killer was not white himself nor were his victims racially targeted. They were merely random passersby strolling through a shoppi...

US F-22s deploy to Estonia from Poland "IndyWatch Feed War"

Introduction May 11, 2023

US Air Force F-22s are about to be deployed to the Amari Air Base in Estonia but they wont be the only NATO warplanes based there. They will be joining a contingent of Royal Air Force Typhoons already stationed there.

Together they represent some the the Wests most advanced and capable air power

To get some idea of how Russia will view this, imagine if advanced Russian and Chinese fighters were deployed to a Mexican Air Force base to monitor the Gulf of Mexico. Or if Russian and Chinese fighters were flying patrols out the Republic of Ireland over the Irish Sea.

The British Parliament, the US Congress and the White House would be in uproar.

Well this amounts to the same thing. Advanced British and American warplanes will be flying patrols in airspace that Russia considers its own backyard. The West is more than just asserting itself over sea lanes to and from Russias main north eastern port,  we cant help feeling that it is preparing for a direct military confrontation with Russia.

To make matter worse these potential areas of confrontation with Russia arent confined to the Baltic or Ukraine.

They are developing in Romania, where NATO is establishing a network of air and missile defences, that Russia claims is a threat to its interests.

There are also the Kuril Islands in the northern Pacific, currently occupied by Russia but claimed by Japan.

Then of course theres Syria, where nearly one thousand US troops remain in defiance of demands by Damascus that they leave.

So potential areas of conflict with Russia are developing on multiple fronts and neither Russia or the West seems ready to back down. Ed.

Ukraine gets British long-range missiles ahead of counteroffensive "IndyWatch Feed War"

Andrew Chuter Defense News May 11, 2023

Britain has donated Storm Shadow cruise missiles to the Ukrainian air force in a move widely seen as a game changer in Kyivs ability to mount long-range strikes against invading Russian forces.

The decision to hand over a quantity of the MBDA-built cruise missiles was announced by British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace in a May 11 statement to lawmakers here.

Storm Shadow is a long-range, conventional, precision-strike capability, he said. It compliments the long-range systems already gifted, including HIMARS and Harpoon missiles, as well as Ukraines own Neptune cruise missiles and longer-range munitions already gifted.

The Anglo-French-developed Storm Shadow missile, known in France as Scalp-EG, has a range in excess of 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, and is particularly effective against hardened and buried targets, according to the manufacturer.

The donation of Storm Shadow missiles, many of which are already in Ukraine, means the British are the first nation to supply Kyiv with long range weapons.

Wallace described the governments decision as a calibrated, proportionate response to Russians escalation in its invasion of Ukraine.

These systems are not in the same league as the Russian AS-24 Killjoy hypersonic missile or Shahed Iranian one-way attack drones, or their Kalibr cruise missile with a range of over 2,000 km, roughly 7 times that of the Storm Shadow missile, Wallace said. Russia must recognize that their actions alone have led to such systems being provided to Ukraine.

Wallace said technical hurdles integrating the weapon onto Ukraines Soviet-era combat jets had been successfully overcome.

Having technically cleared the hurdles, and as everyone talks about an expected counter-offense, now is the right time to gift these to Ukraine, and they [Storm Shadows] are now going into or are in the country, he said.

The British have been signaling for months their intention to donate the long-range weapon to the Ukrainians, and confirmation of the move comes ahead of a long expected offensive by Kyiv against Russian forces occupying parts of the country.

Its part of a wider Western effort to strengthen Ukraines deep-strike capabilities which has recently seen a British-led effort to procure missiles or rockets with a range of 100-300km and payloads between 20kg and 490kg as part of an international funding arrangement.

The Storm Shadow weapon provides the Ukrainian air force with a substantial step up in capability, according to Douglas Barrie, senior air analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank in London.

It really provides Ukraine with a long-range strike capability it doesnt have, h...

Mike Stone A Catholics View of Pornography "IndyWatch Feed War"

HenryMakow.com May 11, 2023

Mike Stone has written an advice book for teenage boys. His first line of advice is Purge All Porn.

Porn has been used to turn males into sex addicts and to undermine the institution of marriage. Both have contributed to the satanic possession we are experiencing.

For another perspective, see my Managing the Male Sex Drive.

    by Mike Stone (henrymakow.com)

If youre not currently reading or watching pornography, youre a good man. Dont ever start.

If you ARE currently reading and watching pornography, its important for you to stop immediately and purge it all from your life.

Pornography has no place in the life of a man. Its sinful, its disgusting, and it leads to masturbation, a mortal sin that will send you straight to hell.

Even the act of reading or watching pornography is a mortal sin that will send you to hell for all eternity. Is the sight of some ugly whores naked body worth going to hell for?

Women who allow themselves to be seen naked or in any form of scanty attire (bikinis, swimming suits, short skirts, etc.) are a blight on humanity and guilty of serious sin. They are literal human scum and condemning their souls to hell in exchange for fleeting male attraction. If you knew them in real life, youd be appalled and disgusted just being around them. Are you going to put your soul in danger of eternal damnation just to ogle one of these filthy whores?

You may not know this, but the main purpose of pornography is the destruction of Christianity. The porn pushers admit this themselves. Thats why pornography is so rampant in our society.

Dog Poet Transmitting.

Well now the poor huddled masses yearning for Walmart World are getting their Door Dash deliveries through the wall at Tijuana, waiting for Title 42 to end. I guess you know that this whole migrant thing is being driven by Big Business the conglomerates and international franchises. Its to lower the costs of labor because American citizens cost too damn much to employ, AND theres no one fit to be in the military anymore. There are other reasons too.

Its also about blending the races to the same common hue, speaking a polyglot pidgin with an across-the-board average of a 7th-grade education maybe. Of course, it doesnt matter how far you go in school these days if what you are learning is nonsense. Higher education would then mean; advanced nonsense specialized nonsense and nonsense Piled Higher and Deeper.

In some places, Nonsense will give way to Bullshit, and whole new course curriculums of Nonsense to Bullshit comparatives and anal-izing will spring up. No No! Thats not Bullshit, thats Nonsense. Look! Look at the grain and the texture! Only Bullshit oh, wait a minute youre right (something you would never hear) it is Bullshit, my Baaaaaahd.

I have a deep affection for America also known as The Great Satan in other locations. I thought of it as a great experiment later (I guess) to be known as a great failed experiment, but this is what you get from Materialism when it starts to run hot. This is also why it is called The Great Satan because that is the realm of The Red Guy with the Mustache and Goatee.

The Devil has a pitchfork. His job is to prod you on through whatever appetite and desire suggest when you are led into temptation. In India, they have a trinity also and one of the personifications has a trident, which is a kind of a pitchfork and he qualifies for some of the things that get blamed on The Devil, because he is The Destroyer aspect.

He would also be the revealer. Lord Shiva is associated with some of the more undesirable aspects of material existence, which is why he is never invited to weddings or other celebrations because of what he is a reminder of.

The whole thing is pretty simple, IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO UNDERSTAND IT. There is a dial. You turn it down and you enter the carnal theater(s) and The Devil who is God as The Wicked perceives him runs the illusion circus on that level. You turn The Dial up and you enter the spiritual zone(s). In the one location you desire, and in the other location you aspire. Its pretty simple and&#823...

Ex-Pfizer VP: COVID vax push a supranational operation intended to maim and kill deliberately "IndyWatch Feed War"

Patrick Delaney Life Site News May 9, 2023

Dr. Michael Yeadon, who formerly served as Pfizers vice president and chief scientist for allergy and respiratory, explained how he knew the COVID virus, with its subsequent vaccine campaign, was a supranational operation designed to injure people, to maim and kill deliberately.

Yeadon, who spent 32 years working mostly for large pharmaceutical companies, spoke to a reporter from Childrens Health Defense in March while attending a Truth be Told Rally in London.

Reviewing how he came to understand the COVID pandemic was something other than what it appeared to be, the pharmacology expert recalled that when I started noticing former colleagues of mine, including Patrick Vallance, saying things on the television I knew werent true and I knew he knew werent true thats when the penny dropped for me, probably [in] February 2020.

Patrick Vallance was the United Kingdoms chief scientific adviser to the government from 2018 to 2023.

I remember saying to my wife, this is not what theyre saying it is. Somethings going on, Yeadon explained.

And when I saw not only my country locking down, but dozens of countries locking down at the same time that was proof, and is still proof, of a supranational operation, he said.

Theres no way that could have happened at the local level, at the country level. Therefore, it must have occurred at a level above. Whether it was the WHO or the World Economic Forum, or other, I dont know, but the orchestrated response demonstrates a planned event as opposed to one determined by the chance of the virus developing, Yeadon said.

These governments all did the same stupid, ineffective, known-not-to-work things at the same time, none of which were in their countries pandemic preparedness plans, because Ive read them all, the toxicology expert assured.

Further, he said that he is perfectly confident he will not be sued by Vallance or others for publicly accusi...

As Donetsk civilians live in constant fear of Ukrainian shelling, a reporter on the ground details the terror "IndyWatch Feed World"

Documenting Kiev's attacks on residential areas is becoming a horrible, tragic routine. Heavy Ukrainian shelling of central Donetsk on April 28 killed nine civilians - including an eight-year-old girl and her grandmother - and injured at least 16 more. The victims were burned alive when the minibus they were in was hit by a shell.

Almost 3 Weeks Since Report Filed With UK Action Fraud and Still No Sign of Action "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

They did what? It took pension firms months to confirm this?

Summary: As weve expected right from the start, reporting crime (pension fraud) to Action Fraud (UK police) results in little action, no action, or very slow action (they say they aim to respond within 28 days); today we revisit the situation

ABOUT three weeks ago we formalised complaints to Action Fraud, which is like a division of British Police. The pension crime (embezzlement) of Sirius Open Source was reported. The evidence was very clear. There are many victims and there are several more fallbacks here, in case the police drags its heels. Well spare details about those fallbacks, for strategic reasons. Either way, it is important to show how police in the land of famous monarchs actually deals with white-collar crimes that has many victims.

When you say something is illegal but fail to actually uphold and enforce the law, then its just a token or a formality (as this new article serves to illustrate). Its a carte blanche to commit that crime and it rewards those who commit serious crimes against other people, objectively speaking.

Sirius has been trying to pretend to be a US company in recent years, likely for legal reasons (including the Limited in the UK). But no matter if it dubs itself SiriUS, SiriHK, SiriA or whatever the chief is British, the loans are British, and almost all the staff is British. All those involved in the pension fraud without exception are British. This is a matter for British authorities, including British police, to investigate.

Remember that we as British taxpayers are entitled to get a good service from British cops as we pay their salaries, they basically work for us (or at least theyre supposed to, theyre expected to serve and protect the taxpayers). We are still waiting for as little as an E-mail from British police, but so far not even a call or a letter acknowledging theyre on the case or have made some progress. The sad thing is that were so cynical that this is what we expected and...
