Aus Ungarn hrt es gar lustige Korruptionsgeschichten.Hohlmeier ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Update: Ja, DIE Monika Hohlmeier. Wenn sich jemand mit Korruption auskennt, dann ja wohl die! Das muss richtig schlimm sein, wenn sich Monika Hohlmeier ber Korruption dort aufregt.

[$] Phyr: a potential scatterlist replacement "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The "scatterlist" is a core-kernel data structure used to describe DMA I/O operations from the point of view of both the CPU and the peripheral device. Over the years, the shortcomings of scatterlists have become more apparent, but there has not been a viable replacement on the horizon. During a memory-management session at the 2023 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management and BPF Summit, Jason Gunthorpe described a possible alternative, known alternatively as "phyr", "physr", or "rlist", that might improve on scatterlists for at least some use cases.

[$] Memory passthrough for virtual machines "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Memory management is tricky enough on it own, but virtualization adds another twist: now there are two kernels (host and guest) managing the same memory. This duplicated effort can be wasteful if not implemented carefully, so it is not surprising that a lot of effort, from both hardware and software developers, has gone into this problem. As Pasha Tatashin pointed out during a memory-management-track session at the 2023 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management and BPF Summit, though, there are still ways in which these systems run less efficiently than they could. He has put some effort into improving that situation.

This Week in Security: .zip Domains, Zip scanning "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The world may not be ready, but the .zip Top Level Domain (TLD) is here. Its a part of the generic TLD category, which was expanded to allow applications for custom TLDs. Google has led the charge, applying for 101 such new TLDs, with .zip being one of the interesting ones. Public registration for .zip domains has been open for a couple weeks, and some interesting domains have been registered, like update.zip, installer.zip, and officeupdate.zip.

The obvious question to ask is whether this new TLD can be abused for scamming and phishing purposes. And the answer is yes, sure it can. One of the trickiest ways is to use the AT symbol @ in a URL, which denotes user info at the beginning of the URL. It usually is used to include a username and password, like http://username:password@192.168.1.1/. That is pretty obvious, but what about https://google.com@bing.com? Still looks weird. The catch that really prevents this technique being abused is that slashes are disallowed in user data, so a abusive URL like ...

China responds to Kissingers Ukraine proposal "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | May 19, 2023

China has urged against Ukraine joining NATO, saying it would not improve security in the European region, after veteran US diplomat Henry Kissinger claimed membership would serve the interests of both Kiev and Moscow.

Asked about Kissingers comments during a Thursday press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin argued that Ukrainian NATO membership would only further inflame tensions.

Ukraine should not become the frontier in a major power confrontation, he said, adding that to strengthen or even expand military groups is not a viable way to ensure the security of a region. One countrys security should not be achieved at the expense of the security of other countries.

In an interview with the Economist published on Wednesday, Kissinger said European powers were pursuing a madly dangerous strategy by keeping Kiev out of the US-led military bloc, insisting Ukraine must not become a solitary state just looking out for itself. He claimed NATO membership would not only...

Study: Indonesias extensive network of marine reserves are poorly managed "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

JAKARTA Indonesia has put nearly a tenth of its national waters, the sixth-largest maritime jurisdiction of any country, under some form of protection. But poor management means these protected areas havent been to achieve their biodiversity conservation goals, a new study says. Indonesias 411 marine protected areas parks, reserves and maritime conservation areas cover a combined surface area of 284,100 square kilometers (109,700 square miles), an area larger than the U.K. For all their size, these MPAs account for less than 9% of Indonesias waters; the country is targeting to expand that coverage to 10% by 2030 and then 30% by 2045 as part of its contribution to the global 30 by 30 conservation goal, which aims to protect 30% of the worlds land and seas by 2030. Despite these lofty goals, none of the existing MPAs has demonstrated effective or sustainable management based on the governments own standards, researchers have found. In addition, the countrys expansion of the MPA network isnt proceeding fast enough to meet the 30% goal by 2045, the researchers wrote in a recently published study in the journal Biological Conservation. Research proved that MPA is one of the most effective tools for fishery management, lead author Lusita Meilana, a postdoctoral researcher at Chinas Xiamen University, told Mongabay in an email. However, the benefit of the MPA to support sustainable fishery shall be seen when they are managed effectively. A lagoon in the Raja Ampat Ampat Islands in Indonesian Papua. NPM packages found containing the TurkoRat infostealer "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Experts discovered two malicious packages in the npm package repository, both were laced with an open-source info-stealer called TurkoRat.

ReversingLabs discovered two malicious packages, respectively named nodejs-encrypt-agent and nodejs-cookie-proxy-agent, in the npm package repository containing an open-source info-stealer called TurkoRat.

TurkoRat is an information-stealing malware that can obtain a broad range of data from the infected machine, including account login credentials, cryptocurrency wallets, and website cookies. The malware also supports anti-sandbox and analysis functionalities to avoid detection and prevent being analyzed.

TurkoRat is just one of many open source malware families that are offered for testing purposes, but can readily be downloaded and modified for malicious use, as well. reads the analysis published by ReversingLabs. TurkoRats author clearly anticipates this, as he provides instructions on how to use malicious code, while stating that he is not responsible for any damages this software may cause and that it was only made for personal education.'

The two packages were collectively downloaded approximately 1,200 times since their upload into the repository two months before they were discovered.

The nodejs-encrypt-agent was discovered due to scanning the repository.

TurkoRAT npm repository

The researchers noticed that the nodejs-encrypt-agent contained the malware inside. The package name used by the attackers on the npm page appeared as legitimate, but it differed from the name listed in the readme.md file (agent-base). The choice of the name agent-base in the readme.md was not accidental, because agent-base is the name of a...

Tossing Neoliberalism into the Dumpster "IndyWatch Feed War"

Its official, according to a speech by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the United States is jumping off the neoliberal globalization bandwagon (a root cause of domestic extremism) and it couldnt come soon enough as institutions of government are sucking up more and more angry exhaust fumes from constituents, as well as encountering a world trade map with China bullying its way across the world of commerce via its massive Belt and Road Initiative encircling the globe, kicking sand into Uncle Sams face.

Neoliberalism is an economic philosophy of capitalism that promotes freedom of markets, very little government regulation, no price controls, low trade barriers, low-low taxes, and most importantly, reducing the role of government via austerity measures and privatization of state assets. Government social programs, like food stamps, are detested like the plague. Neoliberal-minded President Ronald Reagan famously said: Government isnt the solution to the problem; government is the problem.

Neoliberalism in harmony with globalization has dictated American policy for several decades, thanks to Reagan. However, thats about to change as US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced changes for Americas role in the world in a very significant recent speech: Remarks by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Renewing American Economic Leadership at the Brookings Institution, The White House, April 27, 2023.

As a backgrounder to that speech, over the past few decades America sent high-paying union jobs offshore to find the lowest common denominator wages (globalization) but it really started in earnest with Clint0ns NAFTA deal. Back in the day Ross Perot nailed it: You implement that NAFTA, the Mexican trade agreement, where they pay people a dollar an hour, have no health care, no retirement, no pollution controls, Perot said during the second presidential debate in October 1992, and youre going to hear a giant sucking sound of jobs being pulled out of this country. (Source: Ross Perot was Ridiculed as Alarmist in 1992 but his warning turned out to be Prescient, Salon, July 21, 2019)

Americas $15-20-35/hour union jobs that spun-off into the wilderness of NAFTA originated from todays red states. NAFTA and expansive globalization (SE Asia & China) undercut union wages, crushing a vibrant middle class that was content to work 40-hours per week for wages that supported family, school, vacations, and a good retirement. Today, former union members are red-faced, angry, frustrated, searching for a voice to avenge decades of misery at the hands of elites that crushed middle class livelihoods. Trumps early campaign promises beckoned interest: The three most dangerous voices in America, academic elites, political elites, and media elites captured the heart and soul of displaced Americans by voicing one word, Elites.

The Biden administration knows this....

The US Is Receptive To Kissingers Suggestion To Revive Talks With China On A New Dtente "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY ANDREW KORYBKO | MAY 19, 2023

Two new narratives were introduced into the Wests information ecosystem over the past week. The first concerns the need to adapt to multipolar processes by engaging more with the Global South, which was expressed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, former US National Security Council member Fiona Hill, and Goldman Sachs President of Global Affairs Jared Cohen all on the exact same day last Monday. The next narrative complemented this one and came two days later on Wednesday.

Global affairs guru Henry Kissingers lengthy interview with The Economist from late April was published on that day, in which he devoted considerable time explaining why the US should revive its talks with China on a New Dtente that were unexpectedly derailed by Februarys balloon incident. CNN then reported on that same day that Biden administration looking at arranging high-profile visits to China by senior officials, which suggests that it was briefed earlier about his proposal and heeded his advice.

The first narrative about engaging more with the Global South complements the second one about reviving talks with China on a New Dtente in the sense that the former is one of the three prerequisites for successfully accomplishing the latter, at least according to how American policymakers likely view it. They want to signal that the US wont voluntarily cede influence in the Global South to China, but instead plans to compete with it there via economic and diplomatic means.

This goal will be greatly advanced through a combination of pragmatic engagement with the Global Souths informal Indian leader, whose Prime Minister visits the US late next month, and coordinating between Americas Buil...

Ukraine's suicidal offensive is bleeding out while the CIA loses its mind "IndyWatch Feed World"

Over the last week Ukrainian officials have been insisting that the long-promised counter-offensive is delayed until the West can pony up more tanks, ammunition, artillery and other weapons. But, there has been a noticeable uptick in Ukrainian attacks on Russian positions. These assaults apparently were carried out as a symbolic gesture to appease Western demands that Ukraine do something to the Russians. You can tell that the Ukrainian attacks have been a bust by the very subdued reporting of the activity in the Western press. John Helmer of Dances With Bears provides a grim summary of the effort: On May 12, in the first day of their scheme, 1,725 Ukrainian men were killed on the Donbass front. This is the worst day's military casualty rate since the US coup in Kiev launched the war in February 2014. According to the Financial Times, this killing didn't happen. Instead, the headline reads: "Ukrainian counter-offensive takes shape with the first gains around Bakhmut." The...

The 69th Bilderberg Meeting, a secretive conclave of global power brokers, has kicked off in Lisbon, Portugal, with issues on the agenda including transnational threats, artificial intelligence, and America's leadership in world affairs. This year's meeting, the latest in a series that began in 1954, continues to blur the lines between open diplomacy and clandestine elitism as political leaders brush shoulders with industry bigwigs, media barons, and finance tycoons. "It's a really high-octane list, leaning heavily into the Russia/Ukraine conflict and the future of NATO," journalist Charlie Skelton, who's in Lisbon to cover this year's event, told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement. As usual, the details of their discussions remain obscured by the "Chatham House Rule," a protocol that gives participants the discretion to use the information gleaned from the talks but forbids the identification of speakers or participants, ensuring anonymity.

WikiLeaks as Scapegoat for the Political Establishment "IndyWatch Feed War"

Julian Assange is in prison, indefinitely and in blatant contravention of humanitarian norms. The US national security state has spoken and put its foot down, in a show of power which has subverted the true course of democracy. Sadly, the political will to sustain the persecution counteracts the political will to terminate it, though in the fullness of time the tables may turn. The repercussions are already playing out with copycat prosecutions of journalists under draconian espionage law becoming a frightening norm through cases spanning several jurisdictions, but always following the same pattern of attacking innocent journalists for exposing government and corporate crime. Nonetheless, many are still fooling themselves with the idea we live in democracies which protect human rights and civil liberties when actually we have entered a decidedly post-democratic era.

The reason civil liberties are being attacked like this and why the US Leviathan is edging closer to victory in its pursuit to silence Assange is because the UK political establishment and its seemingly sovereign justice system has yielded to pressure from the US. Over the past few decades the US has definitively ceased to tolerate basic journalism, an activity that, at least before 9/11 and the ensuing splurge of authoritarian policy, was protected by the constitution, which held free speech as sacrosanct. Far easier than taking accountability for their actions is the effort to manage and propagate a narrative which scapegoats Wikileaks for political decline in the US and west at large, notably blaming Assange for the election of Trump. The reactionary demagoguery of the Washington hawk establishment and its class allies in the military industrial complex has inculcated mistrust and suspicion toward Wikileaks and Assange. This is the result of a cynical, calculated perception management campaign at the behest of the intelligence cartel and national security state, the true arbiters of disinformation.

Wikileaks dominated the 2016 US presidential election because it exposed massive wrongdoing by Hillary Clinton which was deliberately filtered out of the mainstream media. Instead of being the focal point of a progressive debate about the toxic culture of impunity in Washington, the leak was swamped with accusations and fear mongering that it was part of a plan by the Kremlin to manipulate the result of the election. The fallacious concept of a chain of command headed by Putin under which WikiLeaks was subsumed became the received wisdom and many misguided leftists fled the Assange liberation effort.

Team Hillary never wanted a sensible debate about the broad implications of the leak for US democracy. They resorted to a revenge strategy in which a conspiracy was concocted to trigger fear and paranoia, a common political tactic to create a misinformed citizenry whose involvement in politics amounts to a knee jerk reaction to calculated propaga...

Imperial Protectionism: US Foreign Policy for the Middle Class "IndyWatch Feed War"

What does a foreign policy for the middle class of the United States entail? President Joe Bidens national security adviser is rather vague about this. But in a speech in April at the Brookings Institution, Jake Sullivan enunciated a few points that do much to pull the carpet from under the rules-based international order, unmasking the face of the empires muscular self-interest. Adversaries, and allies, best watch out.

Sullivan, for one, wistfully laments the passing of the order forged in the aftermath of the Second World War, one that lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and sustained thrilling technological revolutions. Then came cracks in those foundations, with globalisation leaving many working Americans and their communities behind. Overdependence on the global market, he suggests, became the enemy, a point accentuated by the global pandemic, the disruptions in supply chains, the Ukraine War, and a changing climate.

It does not take long to realise the nativist tilt, at least in the economic sense, is in the offing. It is one crowned by a modern industrial and innovation strategy that will foster economic and technological strength, diversity and resilience in supply chains, high standards in terms of labour and the environment, good governance, and deploys capital to deliver on goods like climate and health.

Sullivan goes on to talk about the need for an international economic system that works for our wage-earners, works for our industries, works for our climate, works for our national security, and works for the worlds poorest and vulnerable countries. This will envisage a greater role for the US government: targeted and necessary investments in places that private markets are ill-suited to address on their own even as we continue to harness the power of markets and integration.

Anticipating the critics of this new Washington consensus who see it as a case of America alone or American and the West to the exclusion of others, Sullivan insists they are just flat wrong.

As Sullivans address gathers momentum, there is much to suggest that the sceptics rightly sense something afoot. The market, for one, comes in for some withering treatment, along with privatisation, trade liberalisation and deregulation. There was one assumption at the heart of this policy: that markets always allocate capital productively and efficiently no matter what our competitors did, no matter how big our shared challenges grew, and no matter how many guardrails we took down. In Sullivan beats a protectionist heart.

Foreign policy for the American middle class does not envisage an open market where decisions to sell and purchase products and servi...

What Difference Does a River Make? "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Post #5 in our symposium on Joanne Yaos The Ideal River, from Dr Giulia Carabelli. Giulia is a lecturer in Sociology and Social Theory in the School of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary, University of London. She is interested in affect theory, nonhuman agencies, and social justice. Her current research project, Care for Plants, explores the shaping of affective and intimate relationships between humans and houseplants during the Covid-19 pandemic.

There are three protagonists in The Ideal River: the Rhine, the Danube, and the Congo. We meet them at different times in history when they become crucial agents in the (re)making of international orders. These three rivers illustrate different yet analogous processes of intervention aimed at domesticating what escapes human control (nature) to establish order as a matter of progress. As Yao argues, the taming of rivers exemplifies the fulfilment of the Enlightenment promise that humanity stood together as masters over nature, which is rooted in an unquestioned optimism toward international progress (186). The Rhine is the internal European highway, the Danube the connecting river from Europe to the near periphery and the Congo the imperial river of commerce (10). From the outset, the book sets expectations for nonhuman actors to take centre-stage in the recounting of history and to reveal their obscured roles in the development of global (human) politics. My reflections thus aim to discuss how the book foregrounds nonhuman agencies and to advance an argument for centring care and love to appreciate the potentially disrupting roles of rivers in reshaping political imaginaries, which become more and more urgent as that optimism towards human control flails.

1. The image of the river

I start from the cover of this book; an image taken by NASA/USGS Landsat 8 depicting the Mackenzie River in Canada. From above, this river is rendered through solid shades of blues, browns, and greens. This river does not flow. Similarly, when we imagine rivers on a two-dimensional map, they appear as homogeneous streams, whose ability to connect and serve human settlements we value. Such rivers become boundaries, obstacles, or opportunities to facilitate the movement of people, goods and capital, while ignoring their much more complex life as eco-systems in a constant process of change. These static representations of rivers, so instrumental to human life and its progress, become protagonists of the historical conferences discussed in the book. These rivers are ideals of what a river can become when understood as precious,...

Second largest Swedish party wants Stockholm to prepare for Swexit "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | May 19, 2023

As if the European Union didnt have enough major problems already, now the troubled bloc is faced with the nontrivial prospect of a Swexit. Namely, senior officials of the second largest political party in the Scandinavian country, the Sweden Democrats, are now openly saying that their country needs to be prepared to leave the EU. This includes the party leader himself, Per Jimmie Akesson, who stated that only by making the necessary preparations for Swexit can the government maximize its bargaining power in Brussels. The right-wing Sweden Democrats have long been frustrated by the power that the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels wield over their country, so this is hardly a surprising development.

However, even Eurosceptic Swedish parties usually refrain from such open anti-EU declarations, meaning that the bloc is gradually losing its power, even in previously somewhat pro-EU member states. On May 15, Akesson authored an article along with his Sweden Democrats fellow member Charlie Weimers, who also represents his party and his country as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). The op-ed was published by the Stockholm-based Svenska Dagbladet daily, in which the authors explicitly stated that their intention is to ensure Sweden maximizes its influence in the EU, specifying several legal measures the countrys government must take to accomplish the stated goals.

First, the Swedish government must insist on making constitutional changes that would make it possible to introduce what Akesson and Weimers called a referendum lock. According to the authors reasoning, this would enshrine into law the requirement of a nationwide referendum before any further national powers can be renounced by Sweden and transferred to the unelected EU bureaucrats. The goal is to ensure that any further erosion of the Scandinavian countrys sovereignty is prevented if the Swedish people choose not to comply with it. The authors cited the examples of the United Kingdom and Denmark as an inspiration, as both London and Copenhagen previously adopted similar legal mechanisms.

Only the knowledge that every decision on the transfer of power must be submitted to the citizens would slow down the worst abuses from Brussels, Akesson and Weimers wrote in the op-ed.

Second, the countrys government must make the necessary preparations to leave the EU, as the troubled bloc should not take Swedens national interests for granted. The authors insist that the government must ensure its ready in case such a decision is ever made by the Swedish p...

Having been released on bail, Khans bold challenge to the military has incited unprecedented levels of protests and unrest across the country. Understanding these historical episodes, specifically the militarys evolving role in governance, can shed light on the present situation.

Pakistans political history is marked by repeated military interventions that have shaped the administration and direction of its civilian and military institutions. Since the countrys founding in 1947, there have been three successful coups in 1958, 1977, and 1999 that serve as key reference points in understanding the civil-military dynamic. As we explore the current conflict, comparing it with these historical events and analyzing their effects on civilian institutions can provide valuable insight.

The Group Decode ROM: The 8086 Processor's First Step of Instruction Decoding "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

http://www.righto.com/2023/05/8086-processor-group-decode-rom.html

A key component of any processor is instruction decoding: analyzing a numeric opcode and figuring out what actions need to be taken. The Intel 8086 processor (1978) has a complex instruction set, making instruction decoding a challenge. The first step in decoding an 8086 instruction is something called the Group Decode ROM, which categorizes instructions into about 35 types that control how the instruction is decoded and executed. For instance, the Group Decode ROM determines if an instruction is executed in hardware or in microcode. It also indicates how the instruction is structured: if the instruction has a bit specifying a byte or word operation, if the instruction has a byte that specifies the addressing mode, and so forth.

USA: Increasingly polarized "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Veniamin Popov New Eastern Outlook 19.05.2023

The decline of civic life in the US is primarily down to the de-facto absence of the freedom of press. This freedom is only proclaimed in words, but in reality, a single point of view is imposed on everyone. This has furthermore exacerbated the divisions in American society.

The highly acclaimed primetime TV host, Tucker Carlson, who was recently fired, alleged that the American media is prohibited from discussing important topics that affect the future of the United States and the whole world: The undeniably big topics, the ones that will define our future, get virtually no discussion at all: war, civil liberties, emerging science, demographic change, corporate power, natural resources.

The reporter has repeatedly criticized the conduct of American officials; for instance, he spoke about the consequences for the United States of the conflict in Ukraine and also affirmed the allegations Russia made regarding the terrorist attack on Nord Stream, claiming it is the Wests biggest lie.

Faisal J. Abbas, editor-in-chief of the Saudi newspaper Arab News, emphasized that the biggest threat facing the United States today is polarization the media has been used by politicians to cultivate their own audiences and create ideology: politicians only think from one election cycle to the next, so they take ideological positions that are not really essential to the daily life of the average American citizen. Issues such as gender identity and abortion are central to public discourse; on the other hand, issues affecting the daily lives of ordinary Americans, such as deteriorating living standards, increasing homelessness, unaffordable rents, and college education, are not being addressed.

Virtually no one talks about the real problems faced by the average American; their attention is focused on secondary issues that benefit politicians. Meanwhile, domestic social, ethnic and racial contradictions in the US are becoming more and more acute. A global financial storm in the event of a default on US government debt payments is not out of the question. The US Treasury Secretary spoke about this possibility just recently. A banking crisis also looms on the horizon.

The New York Times in March 2023 published an article about the serious danger of a national divorce.

This topic began to be more often raised in the American press in connection with the actual beginning of the presidential campaign of 2024 as you know, the current President Joe Biden announced it at the end of April.

In response, the Republican Party released their video, created using AI-generated imagery: a realistic-looking news summary announcing Bidens victory in 2024,...

Shutting Down the Israeli Arms Industry, with Huda Amori "IndyWatch Feed World"

The MintPress podcast The Watchdog, hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know including intelligence, lobby, and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media.

Even as Israels war against Palestine continues unabated, a new movement has arisen in the United Kingdom, challenging the Israeli war machine and it has been winning some impressive victories.

Founded in 2020, Palestine Action is a grassroots activist movement that seeks to end British complicity in Israeli war crimes by shutting down arms manufacturing sites across the U.K. Today, Lowkey welcomes back Palestine Action co-founder Huda Amori to talk about the rise of her organization that has taken the country by storm and has weapons manufacturers fleeing. Born in the U.K., Amori is a Palestinian-Iraqi whose father was chased out of his home by Israeli soldiers in 1967, and forced to flee, without even a pair of shoes.

Decades later, Amori has found a way to fight back, using direct action to occupy and shut down Elbit Systems, Israels largest arms firm. With the help of the community in her native Oldham, Amori and Palestine Actions occupation has forced Elbit Systems to leave the town and sell their factory at a substantial loss. Last summer, they abandoned their London headquarters. And last winter, the British Ministry of Defence canceled around 280 million (around U.S.$350 million) of contracts with the company.

Elbits products, such as drones and surveillance tech, are directly used on the civilian population of Palestine, Amori explained. They are then marketed as battle tested around the world and sold to countries like Australia and India.

If you are building weapons here to be sent back to Israel to be used against Palestinians, or if you are a customer of weapons that have been developed on the Palestinian people, then you are just as guilty, Amori said, adding:

For example, the British Ministry of Defence buy many of these weapons after they have been developed and used against the Palestinians, which only encourages the further development and use of weapons on Palestinians, and to continue the occupation. This cycle of violence just continues to benefit the oppressors and work against the oppressed.

West Virginia University, a leader in energy research and innovation, is repositioning the institutes within its Research Office to best meet industry-wide transitions.

The Energy Institute will transform into the WVU Institute for Sustainability and Energy Research ( WISER), effective July 1, with Sam Taylor as its director. Taylor will build the new Institute on the foundation of the Energy Institute laid by James Wood.

Vice President for Research Fred King said the revamping of the Institute into WISER is more than just a name change.

This restructuring is part of the Universitys transformation to stay ahead of trends in the real world, King said. Itll better enable us to support and engage at an R1 level when it comes to sustainability and energy transition. While it appears we are evolving, we also still want to stay true to the history and tradition of energy in the state.

WISER will serve as the Universitys coordinating institution for energy and sustainability research by collaborating with stakeholders across campus, the state and the globe to stimulate energy and environmental economic development in West Virginia and beyond.

Taylor will assume his new leadership role after serving as assistant director of strategic partnerships and technology with the Energy Institute since 2017. As director of WISER, Taylor will also oversee the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium. In recent years, Taylor has worked with policymakers, government entities and environmental groups on pressing energy issues.

WISER will align the talents and efforts of the Energy Institute toward a vision of sustainability, including energy, while seeking to understand and respect what that means for residents of West Virginia and the larger region, Taylor said. As a West Virginia native, I understand that adaptation, resilience and independence are core values of this region, and we need to structure our work, using the capabilities of West Virginia University, to support these values. To do this effectively, we must focus on relationships.

Building a Giant Vacuum Tube Smart Lamp "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Vacuum tubes are pretty, which is why theyre often showcased externally on exquisitely-expensive home Hi-Fi hardware. But if you just want to gaze at their beauty without making any noise, why not build this vacuum tube lamp from [Noel Trjk] instead?

[Noel] got into some creative reuse with this build, with the main body consisting of a bell jar and wooden bowls. The internal structure is then created from jar lids, wire, metal sheeting, steel rods, and galvanized wire mesh. Simple modelling techniques are used to assemble the internal parts of the valve, including the grid and the electrodes and so on. As for light, [Noel] employed a ZigBee LED driver that he could control over his smart home setup via a Philips Hue bridge.

The final result looks like an extra-large tube. Anyone who knows what it is will spot that its not a real one, but theyre also exactly the audience that will appreciate it for what it is. Everyone else will probably just think youve taken an interest in strange art-deco replica lighthouses. A Twitter bot tracks meat production in the Brazilian Amazon "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Elon Musk may claim to hate them, but can Twitter bots be put to good use? A new tool that aims to monitor and expose deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest might be showing the way. Brazil Big Beef Watch is an automated Twitter account that alerts the public to deforestation linked to the indirect supply chain of meatpacking giant JBS in the Brazilian state of Par. Developed by international NGO Global Witness, the tool employs deforestation alerts and cattle transit permit data to identify whether a ranch where deforestation took place is part of JBSs indirect supply chain. It then shares the information through automatically generated tweets. Apart from spreading awareness among the general public, Global Witness developed the tool to serve as a way to call on JBS, the worlds biggest meat company, to take action and become more transparent about its supply chain. The tool has been collecting data since 2022 and, according to a press release by Global Witness, found at least 61 instances of deforestation last year in the northern state of Par, averaging 46 hectares (114 acres) of land cleared every single week in this one state alone. The data were made public, via the Twitter account, in late April this year. Breaking the chains of indifference "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

The significance of ending the ongoing war in Sudan cannot be overstated, and represents more than just an end to violence. It provides a critical moment for the international community to follow the lead of the Sudanese people.

alt

They say that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

As someone from the diaspora, every time I visited Sudan, I noticed that many of the houses had small problems like broken door knobs, cracked mirrors or crooked toilet seats that never seemed to get fixed over the years. Around Khartoum, you saw bumps and manholes on sand-covered, uneven roads. You saw buildings standing for years like unfinished skeletons. They had tons of building material in front of them: homeless families asleep in their shade, lying there, motionless, like collateral damage. This has always been the norm. Still, it is a microcosm of a much broader reality. Inadequate healthcare, a crumbling educational system, and a lack of essential services also became the norm for the Sudanese people.

This would be different, of course, if the ruling party owned the facility you were in, with the paved roads leading up to their meticulously maintained mansions. This stark contrast fuelled resentment among the people, leading them to label the government and its associates as them. These houses were symbols of the vast divide between the ruling elite and the everyday citizens longing for change. As the stark divide between them and us deepened, people yearned to change everything at once, to rid themselves of the oppressive grip of them.

Over the years, I understood why a pervasive sense of indifference had taken hold. The people of Sudan grew indifferent towards a government that remained unchanged. It showed no willingness to address the needs of its citizens unless it directly benefited those in power. For three decades, drastic change eluded the Sudanese people. They woke up each day to a different price for the dollar and a different cost for survival. The weight of this enduring status quo bore down upon them, rendering them mere spectators of their own lives. However, as it always does, a moment of reckoning finally arrivedthe revolution.

Returning home after the 2019 revolution in Sudan, what stood out in contrast to the indifference was the hashtag #hanabnihu, which from Arabic translates to we will build it. #Hanab...

Remembering Jim Early (1943-2023) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Remembering Jim Early (1943-2023)

I was saddened to learn of the recent death of James Early, author of a key paper on interstellar sail missions and a frequent attendee at IRG events (or TVIW, as the organization was known when I first met him). Jim passed away on April 28 in Saint George, UT at the age of 80, a well-liked figure in the interstellar community and a fine scientist. I wish I had known him better. I ran into him for the first time in a slightly awkward way, which Jim, ever the gentleman, quickly made light of.

What happened was this. In 2012 I was researching damage that an interstellar sail mission might experience in the boost phase of its journey. Somewhere I had seen what I recall as a color image in a magazine (OMNI?) showing a battered, torn sail docked in what looked to be a repair facility at the end of an interstellar crossing. It raised the obvious question: If we did get a sail up to, say, 5% of the speed of light, wouldnt even the tiniest particles along the way create significant damage to the structure? The image was telling and to this day I havent found its source.

I think of the image as lightsail on arrival, and if this triggers a memory with anyone, please let me know. Anyway, although our paths crossed at the first 100 Year Starship symposium in Orlando in 2011, I didnt know Jims work and didnt realize he had analyzed the sail damage question extensively. When I wrote about the matter on Centauri Dreams a year later, he popped up in the comments:

I presented a very low mass solution to the dust problem at the 100 Year Starship Symposium in a talk titled Dust Grain Damage to Interstellar Vehicles and Lightsails. Reviving Office Chatter "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers Design Tool to Enhance Workplace Socialization in Remote, Hybrid Arrangements:

About one-third of our lives are spent at work, and the relationships we build there can have personal and professional benefits. But a majority of workers indicate difficulty connecting with co-workers socially, especially in the new landscape of remote and hybrid work arrangements.

To ease the friction caused by reduced in-person interaction, a team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute created a Slack application that helps to initiate casual conversations and create affinity groups in an online workspace.

"We were freshly out of the pandemic, and we realized that everyone around us was complaining about how it's hard to build genuine connections," said Shreya Bali, the project's principal investigator who earned her master's degree from CMU's School of Computer Science in 2022. "Online modes of communication do provide us with the technical tools to make connections, but there is still a lot of hesitation to actually initiate such conversations when you are not in the same room as someone."

The team's new application, called Nooks, offers users a low-risk way to start new conversations in three phases: creation, incubation and activation. It starts with someone anonymously submitting a topic of interest. Then, the topic is incubated while the system presents it to other Slack users, allowing them to indicate if they are interested in the same topic. Once the incubation period is over, a private channel or "nook" is activated for this newly identified affinity group.

3 million hectares of Colombian Amazon deforested for illegal pasture: Study "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

An innovative new study featuring the methodological use of machine learning algorithms, published in Nature magazine, has revealed that more than 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres) of Amazonian Rainforest were cut down to make way for illicit activities between 1985 and 2019. The results of the analysis of the 34-year time frame showed that the vast majority of deforestation is attributed to stable cattle ranching lands. The study, published in February, illustrated how the loss of forest cover to make way for grazing pastures for cattle ranching has increased exponentially since the Peace Agreement between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian government in late 2016. The agreement indicated the end of FARC-led gunpoint conservation. It signaled the beginning of new land use activities such as cattle ranching, promoted by drug cartels and large landowners seeking to capitalize on more favorable land policies, the study said. A common view across hundreds of hectares of the Bajo Cagun region, Colombia. Image by Mara Fernanda Lizcano. Identifying areas of rainforest cut down for illegal activities One of the main obstacles that scientists and decision-makers have faced when using satellite images to analyze changes in land use is the difficulty of accurately establishing when this change took place illegally. This is because those involved in illegal activities deliberately work to cover their tracks, with this being compounded by the fact that illicit activities are not well documented in publicly accessible data, making it difficult to connect them toThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Kemal Kilicdaroglu speaks during a press conference in Ankara, 18 May (Reuters)

It took four days for Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu to emerge following his first-round election defeat on Sunday.

Kilicdaroglu addressed a conference hall full of party supporters with energetic but divisive rhetoric.

He called on everyone in Turkey to make a choice between a government led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which he said would bring 10 million more refugees, and himself, promising to protect Turkish borders and send all refugees back.

This campaign will be tense, polarising, and more nationalist, one Turkish opposition official from Kilicdaroglus Republican Peoples Party (CHP) told Middle East Eye.

This a simple choice between Kilicdaroglu or Erdogan. And our main theme is fear, we will remind everyone what the next five years will be like if he is re-elected.

Anti-Piracy Program Accused of Violating Citizens Fundamental Rights "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Pirate KeyWhen the French government formed a new anti-piracy agency called Hadopi, the mission was to significantly disrupt BitTorrent and similar peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.

Hadopi was a pioneer of the so-called graduated response scheme which consists of monitoring a file-sharers internet activities and following up with a warning notice to deter their behavior. Any future incidents attract escalating responses including fines and internet disconnections. Between 2010 and 2020, Hadopi issued 12.7 million warning notices at a cost to French taxpayers of 82 million euros.

The programs effect on overall piracy rates remains up for debate but according to French internet rights groups, Hadopi doesnt just take citizens money. When it monitors citizens internet activities, retains huge amounts of data, and then links identities to IP addresses to prevent behavior that isnt a serious crime, Hadopi violates fundamental rights.

Protecting Rights

Despite its authorization under the new law, the official launch of the Hadopi agency in 2009 met with significant opposition. File-sharers had issues with the program for obvious reasons but for digital rights group La Quadrature du Net, massive internet surveillance to protect copying rights had arrived at the expense of citizens fundamental right to privacy.

La Quadratures opposition to the Hadopi anti-piracy program focuses on the law crafted to support it. One of the implementing decrees authorizes the creation of files containing internet users IP addresses plus personal identification data obtained from their internet service providers.

According to the digital rights groups interpretation of EU law, that is unlawful.

Legal Challenge in France

With support from the Federation of Associative Internet Service Providers, French Data Network, and Franciliens.net, in 2019 La Quadrature filed an appeal before the Council of State (Conseil dtat), requesting a repeal of the decree that authorizes the processing of personal information.

The Council of State referred the matter to the Constitutional Council and its subsequent decision gave La Quadrature the impression that Hadopis position was untenable. For their part, Hadopi and the government reached the opposite conclusion.

As devices evolve, older versions become more affordable, so its becoming increasingly mainstream for families to own a number of connected devices. If you are a non-UK resident partner of someone who is a British citizen, has settled status in the UK, or is in the UK with refugee leave or humanitarian protection, you will need to meet a financial requirement outlined in the Immigration Rules. To obtain a spouse visa, you must meet a minimum income threshold unless you are exempt. This threshold is a gross annual income of 18,600 if you are applying without dependent children. Delta: Property Worth Millions Of Naira Destroyed In Boundary Clash Between Two Ughelli Communities "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

PROTEST

File Photo

LAGOS MAY 19TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Property worth millions of naira has been reportedly destroyed in an ongoing boundary dispute between Ughevwughe and Eruemukowharien communities both in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the incident began on Sunday, May 12, 2023 and has degenerated into the subsequent days.

The cause of the crisis is said to be connected with alleged encroachment on Ughevwughe land by Eruemukowhorien community after a said demarcation of the boundary between the two communities.

Speaking to our correspondence, a source in the community (name withheld) said the crisis is between the two rival communities over a land dispute.

According to her, the said area under dispute had already been duly demarcated, with both communities knowing their well laid out boundaries.

She, however, alleged that the Eruemukowharien axis encroached on the land belonging to their rival community which was met with stiff resistance thereby escalating the issue.

The source narrated that the crisis began on Sunday when some unidentified heavily armed gunmen suspected to be boys from Ughevwughe, besieged the residence of the President General of Eruemukowhorien Community shot sporadically, and in the process destroyed property worth millions of naira.

Although, no life was lost, the community leader was said to be unavailable as at the time of the visit.

However, cars and the community health ambulance were totally destroyed by the gunmen.

This of course led to a reprisal attack on Ughevwughe community by irate youths from Eruemukowhorien thereby escalating the issue, she added.

She disclosed that the situation is putting residents of both communities in a state of fear as they call on the state police command and other security agencies in the state to wade in the crisis and restore sanity in the communities.

Attempts to contact the Delta State Police Spokesperson DSP Edafe Bright on the matter were not successful.

Onoyake stated this recently during the inauguration of both taskforces in the Local Government Council secretariat in Effurun.

The council boss explained to the traffic taskforce that their duty is not just limited to apprehending people who violate traffic rules, but also to help to control traffic grid areas.

He, however, frowned at some members of the traffic control taskforce who deliberately directed motorists to break traffic rules, with the intention of arresting them and making money off them, to desist from such acts, stating that appropriate punishment will be given to such persons.

For efficiency, the environmental taskforce was divided into sections A and B. While section A will work from the right side of the road, section B will do the same from the left side of the road.

The council boss concluded by demanding total commitment and diligence from the members, emphasizing that the expectation is to make Uvwie a healthy and clean Local Government Area.

Chinese Chip Industry to Focus on Perfecting Mature Nodes "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Chinese Chip Industry to Focus on Perfecting Mature Nodes: Report:

Severe constraints on the development of the Chinese chip industry caused by strict export control rules that block People's Republic chipmakers from obtaining advanced wafer fab equipment (WFE) has triggered local specialists to rethink the nation's semiconductor strategy. While it is obvious that China will have to replace tools made abroad to make leading-edge chips in the long term, for now the country's chipmakers will have to focus on perfecting their mature nodes to stay competitive, reports DigiTimes.

Meanwhile, between 2022 and 2026, Jiwei Research estimates there will be 25 new 300-mm fabs in China, with a total capacity of over 1.6 million wafer starts per month. This could significantly increase China's chip production capacity, which will increase China's total 300-mm capacity to 2.76 million WSPM by 2026.

Without access to advanced equipment, all of these fabs will have to focus on 20nm 90nm-class technologies, but it will better be able to rely on domestic suppliers. Consequently, companies within the Chinese semiconductor supply chain, spanning from raw materials, machinery, and electronic design automation (EDA), are reportedly shifting their growth strategies, prioritizing mature processes over advanced ones. For instance, Naura has declared that it will prioritize shipments of tools for trailing processes utilized by Chinese chipmakers.

Furthermore, a provider of photoresist materials has disclosed that the current industry emphasis is on mature processes, in the hope of spurring significant advancements in mature wafer production techniques. As of now, the development of cutting-edge processes is not at the forefront of Tianxia's semiconductor industry's agenda.

No BBC follow-up on Jordan MP gun smuggling story "IndyWatch Feed War"

Last month the BBC News website published a report about the arrest of a Jordanian MP at the Allenby Bridge border crossing in which it found fit to promote the following quote from one of his colleagues:

A prominent Jordanian MP who is opposed to Jordans peace treaty with Israel, Khalil Atiya, said Israels arrest of Mr Adwan harm[ed] the dignity of Jordanians.

Some two weeks after his arrest on April 22nd, Imad al-Adwan was returned to Jordan. According to reports in the Jordanian media, his parliamentary immunity was removed and he will apparently stand trial in Jordan.

As reported by the Israeli media, the ISA released a statement providing further details of the case.

The Shin Bet security agency said MP Imad al-Adwan, detained at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on April 22, was handed over to Jordanian authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

Al-Adwan was caught with 194 handguns and 12 assault rifles at the Allenby crossing as he was heading into the West Bank by car.

And then: this last mild winter. One really big dump of snow (the snowblower made quick work of it), and thennothing. I had to shovel a bit, but not nearly as much as the previous winter. That winter, I tweaked my back, badly, around New Year 2022. This year, Ive so far got off easy.

The mild winter became a long, cold spring. Grey days, no rain, little hint of sun. While my social media feeds showed crocuses and daffodils far south of here, the snow continued its gradually melt, only pulling back for good in mid-April. A couple weeks ago, the weather turned again. The forsythias blossomed, the irises green began to peek out, and the marsh birds returned, hovering around our feeder, picking out seeds.

Forgotten Antibiotic From Decades Ago Could Be a Superbug Killer "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

An antibiotic developed some 80 years ago before being abandoned and forgotten could again offer exciting new solutions, this time to the emerging threat of drug-resistant superbugs.

Half of the bacteria-killing drugs we use today are variations of compounds that were found nearly a century ago, during this golden age of antibiotics. One called streptothricin was isolated in the 1940s, drawing attention for its potential in treating infections caused by what are known as gram-negative bacteria.

Unlike gram-positive bacteria, these microbes lack a robust cell wall that many antibiotics target. Finding alternatives has been one of the big challenges for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a list of the most dangerous, drug-resistant pathogens out there. Most were gram-negative bacteria.

The breadth of BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Perettis AI aspirations just got a lot clearer and if he has it his way, AI use at the viral publisher wont be limited to time-killing quizzes and bottom-tier travel guides.

BuzzFeed has always lived at the intersection of technology and creativity. And recent developments in artificial intelligence represent an opportunity to take this convergence to the next level, Peretti told eager investors at the companys Investor Day last week. We view AI as an exciting new creativity tool, one that humans can harness to open up new avenues for imagination, storytelling and entertainment and explore new premium product offerings that allow us to innovate and collaborate with our clients and partners on a new frontier in media.

Over the next few years, generative AI will replace the majority of static content, and audiences will begin to expect all content to be curated and dynamic with embedded intelligence, he continued. AI will lead to new formats that are more gamified, more personalized, and more interactive.

Sudan Protests Visit of Hemetti Advisor to Juba

President Kiir (C) received Youssif Ezat RSF Commander's adviser on May 17, 2023

May 18, 2023 (KHARTOUM) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan has condemned the visit of the political adviser to the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to the capital of South Sudan on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stated that it had officially lodged a protest note with the South Sudanese government regarding their permission for Yousif Ezat RSF Commanders adviser to visit Juba.

The ministry also highlighted its objection to the advisers subsequent press conference, which took place in the presence of senior officials from the South Sudanese government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further expressed great surprise at the actions of the Government of South Sudan, stressed the statement.

On Wednesday, the South Sudanese presidency said Ezat briefed President Salva Kiir about their views on the armed conflict with the Sudanese army.

In a press conference held with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Deng Dau Deng, the RSF envoy voiced their support for the IGAD to lead the peace process.

The RSF acknowledged that Juba is an ideal place for the Sudanese peace talks, he further said.

Immediately after the eruption of hostilities in Sudan on April 15, the IGAD leaders tasked South Sudanese leader Salva Kiir to visit Khartoum and to lead a mediation to end the fighting and settle the conflict.

Kiir and other African leaders however had to cancel their visit due to the security situation in Khartoum and proposed to host talks in Juba.

But, Washington and Riyadh proposed to mediate the process and chose the Red Sea town, Jeddah, as the venue of the talks.

On May 11, the two warring parties signed a declaration of commitment to protect the civilians in Sudan. Nowadays they discuss a humanitarian cessation of hostilities.

May 17, 2023 (KHARTOUM) Sudans army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, appeared with ground troops in Khartoum on Wednesday for the first time since fighting erupted against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15.

In a video posted on the Armed Forces Facebook page, Burhan was welcomed by a group of soldiers in the Land Forces Command. They raised victory signs after rallying around him.

Previously, during the early days of fierce battles, the army released footage showing Burhan watching the situation from an operations room on multiple screens, accompanied by a member of the Sovereign Council, Shams al-Din Kabbashi.

The date of the videos filming is unknown, but the backgrounds depicted the aftermath of fire and destruction at the General Command, resulting from shelling and intense fighting between the two forces.

Since April, the army headquarters has been a battleground, with both the army and the Rapid Support Forces vying for control. However, the confrontations around the headquarters have subsided in the past two days.

Residents of the capital have shown solidarity with the armed forces following the outbreak of fighting. Nevertheless, criticism persists regarding the lack of security on the streets and the increasing incidents of shop looting.

Hemetti whereabouts

Three days ago, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, posted an audio message on his Facebook page in response to rumours suggesting that he had been killed or injured during the recent clashes.

In the message, he confirmed that he was safe in Khartoum with his troops. He also vowed to defeat Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and bring him to justice.

Ghana Bets on $3bn IMF Loan to Reset Economy, Ease Hardship

By FRANCIS KOKUTSE and CHINEDU ASADU

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) Ghanian officials said Thursday that the $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout approved for the West African nation would help reset the economy and ease the economic hardship on millions of citizens.

Though far from a magic solution wand, the credit facility approved by the IMF to aid the nations economic growth recovery plan is a crucial first step on the journey of strong reforms (and) inclusive growth, Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghanas minister of finance, told an online briefing.

One of West Africas regional hubs, Ghana has been reeling from an economic crisis as a result of soaring inflation, a weakened currency and rising public debt that is gulping most of its dwindling revenue.

While authorities hope the IMF bailout to be disbursed in several tranches over three years will cushion the countrys economic crisis, analysts warn the country needs more sustainable reforms and improved governance to complement the credit facility.

Opposition lawmakers accused the administration of incumbent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of mismanaging the nations economy and warned that the IMF loan will, without doubt, bite hard on Ghanaians.

With the first tranche of $600 million expected soon, Ernest Addison, Bank of Ghana governor, urged various sectors to support the governments economic agenda. This is now the time to begin the work. The programs approval is just the beginning of the real work of building Ghana better, Addison said.

The IMF said at the briefing that it will be monitoring the implementation of the economic programs anchored on three principles: restoring macroeconomic stability, ensuring sustainable growth for the macroeconomy and laying the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth.

This program, policies and reforms together with the debt restructuring will help ... pave the way for a brighter future for all Ghanaians. I...

Anthropic's Claude AI Can Now Digest an Entire Book Like the Great Gatsby in Seconds "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/05/anthropics-claude-ai-can-now-digest-an-entire-book-like-the-great-gatsby-in-seconds/

On Thursday, AI company Anthropic announced it has given its ChatGPT-like Claude AI language model the ability to analyze an entire book's worth of material in under a minute. This new ability comes from expanding Claude's context window to 100,000 tokens, or about 75,000 words.

Like OpenAI's GPT-4, Claude is a large language model (LLM) that works by predicting the next token in a sequence when given a certain input. Tokens are fragments of words used to simplify AI data processing, and a "context window" is similar to short-term memoryhow much human-provided input data an LLM can process at once.
[...]
While it may not sound impressive to pick out changes in a text (Microsoft Word can do that, but only if it has two documents to compare), consider that after feeding Claude the text of The Great Gatsby, the AI model can then interactively answer questions about it or analyze its meaning. 100,000 tokens is a big upgrade for LLMs. By comparison, OpenAI's GPT-4 LLM boasts context window lengths of 4,096 tokens (about 3,000 words) when used as part of ChatGPT and 8,192 or 32,768 tokens via the GPT-4 API (which is currently only available via waitlist).
[...]
Notably, Anthropic received a $300 million investment from Google in late 2022, with Google acquiring a 10 percent stake in the firm.

Anthropic says that 100K context windows are available now for users of the Claude API, which is currently restricted by a waitlist.

Convoy Attack in Eastern Congo Leaves 4 Dead, Including 3 Park Rangers

By JUSTIN KABUMBA

GOMA, Congo (AP) Four people were killed in an ambush Thursday in Congos Virunga National Park when their convoy of vehicles was attacked by gunmen, according to a statement by local conservation authorities. A further six people were injured, including villagers from the Lubero Territory where the attack took place.

The convoy included technical staff for rural development projects working in the park area, according to the North Kivu branch of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN). Three of the dead were ecoguards working for the conservation group.

The ICCN statement said the attack was carried out by a group of armed men belonging to the Mai Mai, a network of local militia groups.

Eastern Congo has been wracked by violence from a myriad of armed groups for more than a quarter-century. While much of it has been linked to the struggle for control of the regions vast mineral wealth, other tensions have stemmed from long-standing inter-communal disputes.

The ICCN condemned the attack and said the injured were receiving care at a health facility.

Virunga Park is home to some of the worlds last mountain gorillas. However, armed groups such as the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French acronym FDLR, the Mai-Mai and the M23 regularly vie for control of eastern Congos natural resources and many park rangers have lost their lives trying to protect the area.

Why is the world fighting over Ukraine?

original sound Truth_Be_Told

The full leaked conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt can be found here. There is a reason I have called Victoria Nuland the queen of the neocons due to her insistence on warfare against Russia that has been at the forefront of her entire career. The plot behind Ukraine is far deeper than anyone is willing to talk about publically. The leaked phone calls between Nuland and Pyatt show that there was a plot to wage war long before Russia crossed into Ukraine. All they needed was an atta boy puppet to sign his stamp of approval, and Biden was already knee-deep in suspicious business dealings in Ukraine.

Victoria Nuland is of Ukrainian Jewish descent. Her family changed their name to try to hide their Jewish ethnic background. She really would be Nudelman, not Nuland. She is the daughter of Yale bioethics and medicine professor Sherwin B. Nuland, who changed his surname from Nudelman to Nuland. She retained her family name Nuland to perhaps further hide her Jewish connection by marrying Robert Kagan.

Her husband, Robert Kagan, authored the Real Iraq Study Group report for the American Enterprise Institute. This was the Neocon view of regime change. Kagan was said to have convinced President George W. Bush to order the surge plan, which changed the course of the Iraq War. It was...

You Voted for a Sanctuary City "IndyWatch Feed World"

NYC Mayor Eric Adams is at a breaking point over the migrant crisis. He was in favor of the open border until buses filled with migrants, mostly military-aged men, began swarming his city. Adams was a fierce proponent of sanctuary cities and said all were welcome. Adams is out of options, and it has only been one week since Title 42 was revoked. He repeatedly stated that his buddies in Washington have failed to take his calls. What will NYC do with all its new residents?

Half of all hotels in the city have been cleared out to make room for illegal migrants. They are provided with shelter, food, a phone, and some funds despite breaking US law by illegally entering our country. New York City is the hotel capital. Were the hotel capital tourism, visitors, sporting events, graduations, Adams continued. Its a major economic engine for us. Almost 50% of those hotel rooms are being taken up by migrant asylum seekers. The summer tourist season is merely the tip of the iceberg.

School gymnasiums around NYC have also been emptied to make room for undocumented migrants and parents are in an uproar. Parents are not even permitted to enter a school in the US unless they show ID and check in with the front desk. Everyone who works with children must undergo a background check. Here, we have undocumented men from across the world entering our schools. Adams claims that the migrants will not be there at the same time as the children, but there is not enough enforcement to keep the kids safe. Forget weekend or after-school activities.

NYC already has a problem with homelessness. Homeless veterans are being displaced from their shelters to make room for migrants. So the men who fought for our country are being removed from their shelters to accommodate people breaking the law.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul reached out to President Joe Biden to ask for federal assistance, as if money will solve this crisis. Biden and Harris have remain...

Hungary Blocks Funding to Ukraine Through European Peace Facility "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

The European Peace Facility (EPF) was established in March 2021 to preserve peace, prevent conflicts and strengthen international security. So why are the funds being funneled to promote the war in Ukraine after all peace talks were denied? The Hungarian government is asking the same question and recently blocked a 500 million euro payment to Ukraine from the EPF, sparking extreme backlash from the other EU members.

Hungary does not agree with the fact that the European Union, along with other existing tools, uses the European Peace Facility solely with regard to Ukraine as this does not allow sufficient funds to be channelled to promote the EUs interests in other areas, a government spokesman stated. Now the talking heads are claiming Hungary is only safe from Russian aggression due to its NATO status. Prime Minister Viktor Orbn has been criticized as being too far-right, especially as he has called for Trumps re-election in the US. Orbn has been one of the only EU heads of state to criticize Russian sanctions and question the war in general.

Hungary is proposing that funds be redirected to North Africa, where the forgotten war in Sudan continues, and aiding the Balkans. The EPF has already provided Ukraine with 3.6 billion euros. According to the EPFs website: It has a total budget of EUR 7 979 000 000 for the period 2021-2027, with annual ceilings from EUR 399 million in 2021 to EUR 1.434 billion in 2027. Yet they are willing to go over their annual ceiling to fund the war. And the money is for the war, not peace.

The EPF finances CFSP actions with military and defence implications that will enhance the Unions ability to prevent conflicts, build peace, and strengthen international security, the website further states. The war in Ukraine does not threaten the EU. The EU only saw repercussions after it harshly sanctioned R...

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) An 88-year-old Australian doctor held captive by Islamic extremists in West Africa for more than seven years has been freed and has returned to Australia.

Ken Elliott was safe and well and was reunited with his wife and their children on Thursday night, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.

Im very pleased to advise that Dr. Ken Elliott, whos been held hostage in Western Africa for some seven years, has been reunited in Australia with his family, Wong told reporters in Sydney.

Elliott and his wife were kidnapped in Burkina Faso, where they had run a medical clinic for four decades. Jocelyn Elliott was released three weeks later.

We wish to express our thanks to God and all who have continued to pray for us, Elliotts family said in a statement released by Wongs department.

We express our relief that Dr. Elliott is free and thank the Australian government and all who have been involved over time to secure his release, the family statement said.

Wong said no ransom was paid to secure Elliotts freedom, but no other details on his release were disclosed. Media reported he was reunited with his family in Perth, the west coast city where he is from.

At 88 years of age, and after many years away from home, Dr. Elliott now needs time and privacy to rest and rebuild strength, the family added.

The militant group behind the kidnapping, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, rose to prominence in large part through kidnap-for-ransom operations targeting foreign aid workers and tourists....

Why Ukraine Must Lose to Save the World "IndyWatch Feed World"

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong, I originally thought you were just a Putin supporter. Yet as time has gone by, it is becoming very clear that you are correct and that Zelensky is waging this war for the West to conquer Russia. His meeting with the Pope and rejecting his offer to mediate clearly established he will not seek peace. Are we headed into a nuclear war? Did Ukraine really shoot down a Russian hypersonic missile?

Concerned

KL

ANSWER: There is a major problem with Ukraines claims of shooting down a barrage of supersonic missiles. This cannot be confirmed independently and Ukraine is notoriously always putting out fake news typically to get more money. The incentive to create this type of fake news is that Western countries who have been supporting Ukraine are concerned that the military support for Kiev may soon peak as they run out of funds. There is concern that funds for Ukraine will be curtailed ahead of the 2024 presidential election in the United States, the Financial Times recently reported. The Neocons are desperately trying to create World War III before the 2024 election. They are fighting against any cutbacks for Ukraine. This has highlighted that European officials now are increasingly concerned about the flow of aid next year as the US enters a divisive presidential campaign.

According to the FT, Washington has been Kievs major source of military aid. US officials interviewed by the newspaper say the remaining funds preapproved by Congress could sustain Ukraine for about another five months. Western officials in regular contact with the US over Ukraine told the FT that Washington sees that period of time as the last real chance for Kiev to change the situation on the ground. There is a twist. That is the debt ceiling and funds would stop flowing after June 1st unless Biden yields on his insane agenda.

European official told the FT newspaper We cant keep the same level of assistance forever.  Politico reported earlier that only $6 billion of the original $48 billion military aid package that the US had approved previously i...

Convoy Attack: US Condemns Killing, Pledges to Recover Missing Persons

By Miftaudeen Raji

The United States government has condemned the killing of some staff of the U.S. Mission to Nigeria by some unknown assailants in Anambra state.

Recall that some gunmen recently attacked a convoy of two U.S. government vehicles in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra state, Nigeria.

The convoy was carrying nine Nigerian nationals: five employees of the U.S. Mission to Nigeria and four members of the Nigeria Police Force.

They were traveling in advance of a planned visit by U.S. Mission personnel to a U.S-funded flood response project in Anambra.

The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in a statement, noted that the U.S government condemned the attack in the strongest terms.

He assured that the U.S government will work closely with the Nigerian law enforcement colleagues in seeking to bring those responsible to justice.

We do not yet know the motive for the attack, but we have no indications at this time that it was targeted against our Mission.

The assailants killed at least four members of the convoy, and U.S. Mission personnel are working urgently with Nigerian counterparts to ascertain the location and condition of the members of the convoy who are unaccounted for, he said.

Blinken, who noted that the United States has no greater priority than the safety and security of our personnel, said, We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, and pledge to do everything possible to safely recover those who remain missing.

We deeply value our relationship with our Locally Employed Staff and our partnership with Nigeria.

The United States reaffirms its commitment to the people of Nigeria to assist in the fight against violence and insecurity, he said.

My Duplicates on Rampage, Mimicking My Voice, Calling People Peter Obi

By Miftaudeen Raji

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has revealed that his duplicates are on the rampage, mimicking his voice while calling people.

Obi made this revelation in a statement via his verified Twitter handle on Thursday.

The Labour Party presidential candidate, who expressed worry over the development, lamented that he has become a target both locally and internationally.

He stated, My duplicates are still on the rampage, they now mimic my voice and call people. There is no limit that people cannot go to cause mischief on their target. I have been a target both locally and internationally.

Recall that the audio of a leaked phone conversation between Obi and the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo recently.

But, the Head, Obi-Datti Media Office, veteran broadcaster, Diran Onifade, dismissed the audio as deep fake and a product of the propaganda machinery of the ruling All Progressives Congress, a member of the media team, Keneth Okwonkwo, confirmed the authenticity of the audio.

Okwonkwos statement issued in a series of tweets on his Twitter handle a few hours after Dirans statement however explained that the audio was being taken out of context by Obis opponents.

In the audio which was released by an online newspaper, Peoples Gazette, Obi solicited the support of Oyedepo to help get votes from Christians in South-West.

The Labour Party Presidenrial candidate was heard saying the votes were needed because the 2023 presidential election was a religious war.

He said, Daddy, I need you to speak to your people in the South-West and Kwara, the Christians in the South-West and Kwara. This is a religious war. Like I keep saying: if this works, you people will never regret the support.

The audio had attracted a firestorm on social media with some of Obis supporters insisting that the voice rec...

The earliest recorded kiss occurred in Mesopotamia 4,500 years ago "IndyWatch Feed World"

MESOPOTAMIA Written sources from Mesopotamia suggest that kissing in relation to sex was practiced by the peoples of the ancient Middle East 4,500 years ago. The sources have been analysed by researchers from the University of Copenhagen and University of Oxford in a new article published in the journal Science. Recent research has hypothesised that the earliest evidence of human lip kissing originated in a very specific geographical location in South Asia 3,500 years ago, from where it may have spread to other regions, simultaneously accelerating the spread of the herpes simplex virus 1. But according to Dr Troels Pank Arbll and Dr Sophie Lund Rasmussen, who in a new article in the journal Science draw on a range of written sources from the earliest Mesopotamian societies, kissing was already a well-established practice 4,500 years ago in the Middle East. And probably much earlier, moving the earliest documentation for kissing back 1,000 years compared to what was previously...

Nigerian Doctors Begin 5-day Strike, Leaving Many Without Healthcare

By CHINEDU ASADU

May 17, 2023

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) Doctors in Nigerian public hospitals on Wednesday kicked off a five-day strike to demand better conditions, leading to health care being shut for many patients.

The strike by the resident doctors became necessary after the governments refusal to increase their salaries and pay arrears owed some of their members as well as to invest more in hospitals, according to Dr. Innocent Orji, president of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, or NARD.

Although the current work stoppage doesnt affect specialist doctors or nurses, medical residents make up the bulk of health care workers in Nigerian government hospitals. Such strikes are also common with the public health sector lacking sufficient funding for many years despite the countrys huge earnings as Africas biggest economy and top oil producer.

Critics, meanwhile, point to the vast disparity between the government hospitals treating most Nigerians and the medical care abroad that is available to the countrys elite, including Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who often travels to the U.K. for medical care.

Amid Nigerias current economic crisis, the doctors in April threatened to go on strike but we have not seen any positive sign from the government, Orji told The Associated Press.

The government has not called us to the negotiation table. Instead, what we have been getting is threats upon threats, he said, adding that the warning strike could be extended if talks with the government fail to improve.

An Entire RISC-V Operating System in 2000 Lines "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

While Microsoft and Apple dont release the source code for their operating systems, a good estimate is that it takes around 50 million lines of code to run these software behemoths. The Linux kernel alone holds around 30 million lines, with systemd containing over one million lines on its own, which doesnt include estimates for the desktop environment or other parts of a standard installation. But millions of lines of code, or even hundreds of thousands, arent necessary for building a fully functioning operating system. This one sets up a complete OS in exactly 2000 lines of code.

Called egos-2000, short for Earth and Grass Operating System, the diminutive operating system is written for RISC-V computers and while it does contain most of the tools we would recognize in an OS, it was built specifically for computer science students by PhD candidate Yunhao Zhang. The slimmed-down operating system makes it possible for students to easily read and understand every feature of an operating system without it becoming too overwhelming, and can be easily used and modified to experiment with. The name itself comes from its design principles, where parts of the operating system that interact with hard...

The Auto Industry In Jonestown "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Francis Menton | Manhattan Contrarian | May 5, 2023

The notorious events in Jonestown took place so long ago that most readers probably dont have personal memory of them. In November 1978, in the jungles of Guyana, under the powerful spell of a religious cult with a charismatic leader, and of an all-embracing groupthink, some 900 people somehow agreed to participate in a mass suicide. It was a shocking instance of the kind of collective insanity to which humans can be susceptible.

You might think that the Jonestown massacre was a uniquely extreme example of such a mass psychosis, perhaps attributable largely to unusually susceptible subjects or to the isolated location. Surely our best and brightest leaders of government and business would never fall prey to such collective craziness.

If you think that, then perhaps you should look at what is currently going on in the automotive sector of the economy, under the spell of the climate cult and of government functionaries demanding fealty to anti-carbon doctrines.

On April 12, 2023 the EPA released its most recent proposed regulation of automobile emissions. The document is titled Multi-Pollutant Emissions Standards for Model Years 2027 and Later Light- Duty and Medium-Duty Vehicles. It is 262 pages long in the standard Federal Register single-spaced three-column format, thus designed to be virtually impossible to read for anyone who is not getting paid to do it. But the heart of the proposed new rule is that, over a period of a few years, it is to become difficult-to-impossible for automobile manufacturers to continue to sell any significant number of internal combustion engine vehicles. Of course EPA never states that explicitly, and makes the game as difficult as possible for any layman to decipher. But try this language from page 29,196 (12 pages into the document and still in the early part of the Executive Summary):

GHG Emissions Standards. . . . The proposed standards are projected to result in an industry-wide average target for the light-duty fleet of 82 grams/mile (g/mile) of CO2 in MY 2032, representing a 56 percent reduction in projected fleet average GHG emissions target levels from the existing MY 2026 standards.

As I understand it, no internal-combustion car can meet this 82 g/mile CO2 emission standard on its own, so the standard effectively means that a manufacturer can only sell IC cars if it can also make and sell enough zero-emission cars to get an average down to this level. Thus does EPA deviously announce its...

40 Hz vibrations reduce Alzheimers pathology, symptoms in mouse models "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Evidence that non-invasive sensory stimulation of 40 Hz gamma frequency brain rhythms can reduce Alzheimers disease pathology and symptoms, already shown with light and sound by multiple research groups in mice and humans, now extends to tactile stimulation. A new study by MIT scientists shows that Alzheimers model mice exposed to 40 Hz vibration an hour a day for several weeks showed improved brain health and motor function compared to untreated controls.

The MIT group is not the first to show that gamma frequency can affect and improve , but they are the first to show that the can also reduce levels of the hallmark Alzheimers protein phosphorylated tau, keep neurons from dying or losing their synapse circuit connections, and reduce neural DNA damage.

This work demonstrates a third sensory modality that we can use to increase gamma power in the brain, said Li-Huei Tsai, corresponding author of the study, director of The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the Aging Brain Initiative at MIT, and Picower Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS).

How to repair a damaged heart: Key mechanism behind heart regeneration in zebrafish revealed "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, are a leading cause of death worldwide resulting from a limited self-healing power of the heart. Unlike humans, zebrafish have the remarkable capacity to recover from cardiac damage. Researchers from the group of Jeroen Bakkers (Hubrecht Institute) have used the zebrafish to shed light on their regenerative success. They discovered a new mechanism that functions as a switch to push the heart muscle cells to mature in the regeneration process. Importantly, this mechanism was evolutionary conserved as it had a very similar effect on mouse and human heart muscle cells.

The results of the study, published in Science on May 18, show that examining the natural regeneration process in and applying these discoveries to human heart muscle cells could contribute to the development of new therapies against cardiovascular diseases.

It is estimated that 18 million people die from cardiovascular diseases every year. Many of these deaths are related to heart attacks. In such an event, a blood clot prevents the supply of nutrients and oxygen to parts of the heart. As a result, the heart muscle cells in the obstructed part of the heart die, which eventually leads to . Although therapies exist that manage the symptoms, there is no treatment that is able to replace the lost tissue with functional, mature heart muscle cells and thereby cure the patients.

Bill Gates Opposes Elon Musks Call to Pause New A.I. Research "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates says he's "scared" about artificial intelligence falling into the wrong hands, but unlike some fellow experts who have called for a pause on advanced A.I. development, he argues that the technology may already be on a runaway train:

The latest advancements in A.I. are revolutionary, Gates said in an interview with ABC published Monday, but the technology comes with many uncertainties. U.S. regulators are failing to stay up to speed, he said, and with research into human-level artificial intelligence advancing fast, over 1,000 technologists and computer scientists including Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk signed an open letter in March calling for a six-month pause on advanced A.I. development until "robust A.I. governance systems" are in place.

But for Gates, A.I. isn't the type of technology you can just hit the pause button on.

"If you just pause the good guys and you don't pause everyone else, you're probably hurting yourself," he told ABC, adding that it is critical for the "good guys" to develop more powerful A.I. systems.

[...] "We're all scared that a bad guy could grab it. Let's say the bad guys get ahead of the good guys, then something like cyber attacks could be driven by an A.I.," Gates said.

The competitive nature of A.I. development means that a moratorium on new research is unlikely to succeed, he argued.
