Suse forkt dann mal Redhat Enterprise Linux. Money Quote:

Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, CEO of SUSE, said, For decades, collaboration and shared success have been the building blocks of our open source community. We have a responsibility to defend these values. This investment will preserve the flow of innovation for years to come and ensures that customers and community alike are not subjected to vendor lock-inand have genuine choice tomorrow as well as today.

Claude 2: We are pleased to announce Claude 2, our new model "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We are pleased to announce Claude 2, our new model. Claude 2 has improved performance, longer responses, and can be accessed via API as well as a new public-facing beta website, claude.ai. We have heard from our users that Claude is easy to converse with, clearly explains its thinking, is less likely to produce harmful outputs, and has a longer memory. We have made improvements from our previous models on coding, math, and reasoning. For example, our latest model scored 76.5% on the multiple choice section of the Bar exam, up from 73.0% with Claude 1.3. When compared to college students applying to graduate school, Claude 2 scores above the 90th percentile on the GRE reading and writing exams, and similarly to the median applicant on quantitative reasoning.

Think of Claude as a friendly, enthusiastic colleague or personal assistant who can be instructed in natural language to help you with many tasks. The Claude 2 API for businesses is being offered for the same price as Claude 1.3. Additionally, anyone in the US and UK can start using our beta chat experience today.

As we work to improve both the performance and safety of our models, we have increased the length of Claudes input and output. Users can input up to 100K tokens in each prompt, which means that Claude can work over hundreds of pages of technical documentation or even a book. Claude can now also write longer documents from memos to letters to stories up to a few thousand tokens all in one go.

The Biggest Telescope in the World is Half Built "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The European Southern Observatory continues to build the largest telescope in the world, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Construction of the telescope began in 2014 with flattening the top of a mountain named Cerro Armazones in Chiles Atacama Desert.

ESO just announced that progress on construction has crossed the 50% mark. The remaining work should take another five years. When it finally comes online in 2028, the telescope will have a 39-meter (128 ft) primary mirror of 798 hexagonal segments, making it the largest telescope in the world for visible and infrared light. The new telescope should help to answer some of the outstanding questions about our Universe, such as how the first stars and galaxies formed, and perhaps even be able to take direct images of extrasolar planets.

The ELT is the largest of the next generation of ground-based optical and near-infrared telescopes and the one that is most advanced in its construction, said ESO Director General Xavier Barcons, in an ESO press release. Reaching 50% completion is no small feat, given the challenges inherent to large, complex projects, and it was only possible thanks to the commitment of everyone at ESO, the continued support of the ESO Member States and the engagement of our partners in industry and instrument consortia. I am extremely proud that the ELT has reached this milestone.

Cl0p hacker operating from Russia-Ukraine war front line exclusive "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

CyberNews researchers discovered that at least one of the Cl0p ransomware gang masterminds is still residing in Ukraine.

Original post at: https://cybernews.com/security/cl0p-hacker-hides-in-ukraine/

As the Cl0p ransomware gang continues to sow anxiety worldwide, affecting prominent companies like the BBC and Deutsche Bank, at least one of the gang masterminds, Cybernews discovered, is still residing in Ukraine.

Deutsche Bank, one of the worlds largest banks, is the latest victim of the Cl0p gang. The banks customer data was leaked after hackers penetrated a third-party vendor, Majorel, by exploiting the MOVEit vulnerability.

Other major banks in Europe, including Deutsche Bank-owned Postbank, ING Bank, and Comdirect, have also been affected.

Cl0p, which has a tendency to publicly name its victims in batches, has reportedly been sitting on the zero-day vulnerability for two years. As is quite common with malicious activity en masse, malicious hackers chose the Memorial Day weekend in the US (May 27th and 28th) for a broad swath of activity.

Before the MOVEit saga, which seems far from over, Cl0p enjoyed the spotlight by exploiting Fortras GoAnywhere vulnerability. ShellHitachiHatch BankRubrikVirgin, and many others are among its claimed victims.

Curiously, Shell has been affected by both the GoAnywhere and MOVEit flaws.

Cl0p, first observed in 2019, is quite old for a ransomware gang, given that they tend to regularly restructure and rebrand to throw law enforcement off track. The hacker group, also known by cyber pundits as Lace Tempest, Dungeon Spider...

In Loving Memory Of  Branama Gospel Crooner  Kefee Obareki "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

KEFEE

LAGOS JULY 12TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Yesterday marks nine years since the world bid farewell to an extraordinary talent, a true icon in the world of gospel music Kefee Obareki. On this day, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact she had on the music industry and the lives she touched with her soulful voice and uplifting lyrics.

Born  in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria, Kefees journey in the music industry was nothing short of remarkable. From her humble beginnings, she rose to become a shining star, captivating audiences with her powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence. Her music was a blend of gospel, R&B, and African sounds, creating a unique and soul-stirring experience for listeners.

Kefees career spanned over a decade, during which she released numerous chart-topping hits and received several awards and accolades. Her songs, such as Branama, Kokoroko, and Worship Medley, became anthems for believers around the world, resonating with their messages of faith, hope, and worship.

Beyond her undeniable talent, Kefee was known for her warm and infectious personality. She possessed a rare ability to connect with her fans, making each individual feel seen and valued. Her performances were not just about entertainment but also about touching hearts and transforming lives. Kefee had a genuine love for people and used her platform to spread joy, inspire, and encourage others to embrace their purpose and walk in faith.

Tragically, on June 12, 2014, Kefee suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while on a flight to Chicago. She was placed in a coma and despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she passed away on June 13, 2014. Her untimely departure left a void in the hearts of many, but her music and legacy continue to resonate.

On Friday, July 11, 2014, Kefee was laid to rest in her hometown, Okpara Inland, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. The outpouring of love and support from fans, friends, and fellow musicians was a testament to the profound impact she had on their lives. It was a day of both mourning and celebration as the world said goodbye to an incredible artist, a loving daughter, and a dear friend.

Nine years have passed since that somber day, but Kefees music lives on. Her voice continues to inspire and uplift, reminding us of the power of faith and the beauty of worship. Through her timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics,...

Rattlesnakes can calm down their friends, study shows "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

If you stress out a rattlesnake, make sure it has a friend around. Much like humans, stressed snakes are calmed by a companions presence, according to new research. Stress can lead to increased hormone production, resulting in changes in the nervous system, immune response and behavior. Certain animals, like humans, can regulate their stress response when in the company of another animal of their species, which is referred to as social buffering. We showed that when two snakes were together and experienced a stressful situation, they could buffer each others stress response, much like what happens to humans when they endure a stressful event together, said Chelsea Martin, a Ph.D. student at Loma Linda University and first author of the study published in Frontiers in Ethology. Snakes can display complex social behavior, but the concept of social buffering in reptiles has yet to be extensively studied. This dampening of the stress response has not been reported previously in any reptile species, Martin said. The scientists examined how social buffering affected 25 wild Southern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus helleri), also known as black diamond rattlesnakes, in three different scenarios: when the snakes were alone, in the presence of a same-sex companion, and in the presence of a rope as an inanimate control object. The researchers used heart rate as a dependable indicator of acute stress levels and social buffering. They fitted electrodes near the snakes hearts and connected the sensors to a heart rate monitor. They then placed the snakes in a darkThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Reports from Russia Make Clear There Was No Wagner Mutiny "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Paul Craig Roberts | Institute For Political Economy | July 12, 2023

Reports from Russia have clarified what the alleged Prigozhin Mutiny was all about. The Russian military brass told Prigozhin that his independent Wagner group would be incorporated into the Russian military as of July 1 and be subject to the chain of command. Prigozhin and his commanders rejected this and saw it as an act of envy of the Wagner Groups success compared to Russian Army units. The alleged march on Moscow was a protest to get Putins attention, not an attempt to overthrow Putin or the government.

On June 29 Putin met with Prigozhin and his commanders for events and expressed their commitment to MotherRussia. Having witnessed the Wagner Groups effectiveness in battle, Putin was desirous of keeping the Wagner Group on the front line in Ukraine. The Belarus president, Lukashenko, also wanted the unit and invited them to Belarus.

Prigozhin and his commanders agreed to be incorporated into the Russian chain of command. There is no information whether Putin met Prigozhins demand/request for a more competent Russian general staff and a more determined effort to bring the conflict to a victorious conclusion.

Clearly, no move has been made against Prigozhin. He is a billionaire Russian businessman separate from his Wagner Group, and no moves have been made against his business.

Now, compare these facts with the amazingly stupid accounts given by the entirety of the US and UK media, politicians, and alleged Russian experts. Do you remember the headlines: Prigozhin marches on Moscow, Putins Last Days, Putin damaged by mutiny, Weakened, will Putin now be overthrown?

It was obvious to anyone with a bit of intelligence that it could not possibly have been a military mutiny to overthrow Putin. The military brass, the media, and Putins aides told him it was a mutiny before he spoke with Lukashenko and Prigozhin.

As long as the media reports news as its ideological wishes and official narratives instead of facts, we will live in a fictional existence.

Microsofts Mass Layoffs This Week Are Impacting People in Many US States, in Canada, and in Europe (Not That the Media Talks About It) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Anecdotally, The Reg noticed Microsoft workers all over the world posting #OpenToWork status notices on LinkedIn within the last few hours from various other US states including Arizona, Texas, Florida, Philadelphia, Illinois, and Michigan, as well as places as far afield as Canada and Denmark. Most appear to be in sales, support, and customer roles.
Damn all those quiet quitters, causing a Great Resignation

Summary: The phony narrative wherein only 2 cities are impacted by this months Microsoft layoffs is seldom disputed; thats the cost of letting the media be captured by corporations (they control coverage about themselves)

ACCORDING to "media" reports, Microsoft declined to provide the scope of the job cuts. [1] Or a Microsoft spokesperson declined to specify the number of cuts in the latest round. [2] Thats according to writers who work closely with Microsoft and have worked for Microsoft for years if not decades (we know them by name and wrote about them many times before). There are many other examples that show Microsoft utterly refusing to speak about the scale of these layoffs (or how long follow-up layoffs will go on for). Deja vu? Microsoft fired far more than 10,000 people this year, not even counting temps and contractors (borderline "gig workers" in IT).

Microsoft pressSo the reporting is bunk. Only the numbers from WARN in Washington are cited as if theyre the sole heart and core of these layoffs. But we know for a fact...

Drones improve counts of rare Cao-vit gibbon, identify conservation priorities "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Drones flying above the treetops of a limestone forest on the border of Vietnam and China are helping conservationists develop plans to recover one of the worlds rarest primates: the Cao-vit gibbon (Nomascus nasutus), which is considered critically endangered. Researchers flew drones across Vietnams Cao-Vit Gibbon Species and Habitat Conservation Area and Chinas Bangliang National Nature Reserve from late October to early November 2021, directed by ground spotters. Overall, the data gathered proved more accurate than past surveys that had overestimated the number of gibbons, according to research recently published in the journal Oryx. This drone data helps tell us that basically the population is smaller than we originally thought, study lead author Oliver Wearn, a senior technical specialist at conservation NGO Fauna & Flora International, told Mongabay in an interview. A team of conservationists from Fauna & Flora used UAV cameras with thermal imaging to assist a population survey of the Cao-vit gibbon in Vietnam, finding that the thermal video footage revealed additional individuals not counted by ground-based surveyors. Image Carolina Soto Navarro. Past population surveys were carried out on foot and estimated around 120 gibbons in the wild. The team has not yet released its new population estimate combining data from ground, drone and acoustic surveys as the full paper is still under review, but says the numbers will be lower than previous estimates. However, Wearn said, the smaller number will be a result of more accurate data, not the result of a population decline. This article was originally published on Mongabay

Next steps in the fight for debt relief "IndyWatch Feed War"

The student loan pause offered a safety raft to millions of Americans who are drowning in debt. The Supreme Courts recent 6-3 decision to block student debt relief will devastate these borrowers, many of whom finally experienced what it was like to have money to set aside for the chance to purchase homes, start families and live without constantly worrying about debt.

After having this taste of freedom, Americans are ready to organize to protect what the Biden administration promised them.

Among the groups leading the charge and continuing to push the Biden administration to exercise all options for bringing about the promised debt relief is the Debt Collective. Founded in 2014 as the nations first union of debtors, the Debt Collective represents tens of thousands of people with student loan debt, as well as carceral debt, credit card debt and medical debt.

Born out of Occupy Wall Street and Strike Debt, the group has abolished millions of dollars worth of debt over the last decade. Its members believe that mutual aid is crucial, but also seek to hold the government and those in power accountable, while urging them to act.

Rep. Massie Promises Vote to Establish Audit Overseeing Ukraine War Money "IndyWatch Feed War"

The SIGUA office is opposed by President Biden but may be forced by a congressional vote

BY LEE FANG | JULY 12, 2023

The United States has allocated around $113 billion to Ukraine over the last seventeen months, soon to surpass the money spent on the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe after World War II and quickly approaching the cost of twenty years of war and reconstruction in Afghanistan.

Despite this unprecedented spending, there is no overarching Special Inspector General to oversee the Ukraine funds to root out waste, fraud, and abuse.

Change may be on the horizon. There will also be a vote this week, Rep. Tom Massey, R-Ky., tweeted this morning, on establishing the IG for Ukraine.

The push for a Special Inspector General for Ukraine Assistance (SIGUA) has unfortunately become a partisan issue, another casualty of the negative polarization cycle in Washington, D.C. Last March, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., attempted to establish the audit office as an amendment. The bill splintered the Republican caucus in half, while every Democratic Senator, except Sens. Jon Tester, D-Montana, and Jon Ossoff, D-Georgia, voted against it.

Surprisingly, notable opposition to establishing the office came from Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. Warren, before her rise to the Senate, became a national figure as an oversight official working alongside the SIGTARP, the auditor that oversaw the 2008 bank bailout funds. As Warren has touted in the past, SIGTARP, with relatively limited investigative resources, brought criminal charges against 144 individuals, obtained criminal convictions of 107 defendants, and obtained civil judgments and restitution totaling $4.3 billion.

The Afghanistan auditor, known as SIGAR, discovered even more breathtaking fraud and contractor abuse. The auditor found that U.S. Agency for International Development wasted $335 billion on a diesel power plant in the country that was over-budget and barely used, over $90 million on a program to place only 55 Afghan women in government jobs, and over $1 billion on ghost schools to build classrooms that were never utilized and left empty and dilapidated. The Pentagon reportedly spent $6 million on a project that imported nine Italian goats to boost Afghanistans cashmere market and $43 mil...

Understanding Confinement "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This week and next theres an interesting summer school going on at the IAS, with topic Understanding Confinement. Videos of talks are available here or at the IAS video site.

Taking a look at some of the first talks brings back vividly my graduate student years, which were dominated by thinking about this topic. When I arrived in Princeton in 1979, the people there had been working for several years on trying to understand confinement semi-classically, in terms of instantons and other solutions to the Yang-Mills equations (e.g. merons). By 1979 it had become clear that such semi-classical calculations were not sufficient to understand confinement and people were looking for other ideas. There were quite a few around, including the idea that there was some sort of string theory dual to pure Yang-Mills theory, and I spent quite a lot of time reading up on efforts of Migdal, Polyakov and others to find a formulation of string theory that would provide the needed dual. I ended up writing my thesis on lattice gauge theory, an approach which had the great advantage that you could at least put the calculation on a computer and start trying to get a reliable result for pure Yang-Mills numerically. Some of the calculations I did were done at the IAS, with Nati Seiberg and others. The other thing I spent a lot of time thinking about was how to put spinor fields on the lattice, the beginning of my interest in the geometry of spinors.

I strongly recommend watching Wittens talk on Some Milestones in the Study of Confinement. His career started a few years before mine, with the early part very much dominated by the problem of how to make sense of Yang-Mills theory non-perturbatively, and this has has always been a motivating problem behind much of his work. In his talk he explains clearly the approaches to the problem (lattice gauge theory, 1/N, dual Meissner) that appeared very soon after the advent of QCD in 1973. He emphasizes how each of these approaches shows indications of a possible string theory dual, while frustratingly not leading to a string model that has the right properties, summarizing (41:30) the situation with:

The string theory we want is probably quite unlike any that we actually know, as of now. We dont know how to make a string theory with the short distance behavior of asymptotic freedom.

In his talk he discusses later developments, in particular the Seiberg-Witten solution to N=2 SYM and the AdS/CFT duality between a string theory and N=4 SYM, explaining how these advances still dont provide a viable approach to the confinement problem in pure Yang-Mills.

Im looking forward to seeing the rest of the ta...

A Warm-Dry Summer without Drama "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The tenor of the 2023 Northwest summer is now clear:  modestly warmer and drier than normal but without "excitement".

By excitement, I mean record-breaking heatwaves or heat/wind combinations that might produce major wildfire events.

The atmosphere can get "stuck" into certain configurations due to persistent areas of sea surface temperatures and thunderstorm patterns in the tropics, among other reasons.

This year the atmosphere has been "stuck" in a situation that has brought excessive precipitation and cooler weather to California and warmer/drier weather to the Northwest.

A measure of the "stickiness" of the atmospheric flow can be seen in the sea surface temperatures along the West Coast, which has a lot of memory.  As shown below, the waters off Californian and Oregon are substantially cooler than normal (the figure shows the difference from normal in degrees C, roughly double for F).   Swimming on the Oregon coast will not be pleasant.

Western analysts support NATOs direct participation in Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Lucas Leiroz | July 12, 2023

Western analysts are encouraging NATOs direct participation in the conflict. On July 8, foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall published an article in The Guardian called Defeat for Ukraine would be a global disaster. Nato must finally step in to stop Russia. He argues that Ukraines entry into NATO should be accelerated, with a process similar to the one that guaranteed Finlands accession. According to him, this is the proper way to avoid Kievs defeat and the failure of the counteroffensive, since the direct support of the alliance supposedly would make a Ukrainian victory possible.

Theres a risk, if the current counteroffensive produces no breakthrough, weapons supplies run short, a new winter energy crisis strikes and western public support drops further, that Zelenskiy will be forced into negotiations even into trading territory for peace. Secret, informal US-Russia talks are already under way. If Ukraine were already a NATO member, as promised 15 years ago, all this would not be happening, he said.

The author believes in the possibility of accepting Ukraine even during the situation of the conflict. One of Tisdalls arguments is that there are historical precedents for the Ukrainian case. Then, he reminds West Germanys accession to NATO, which took place in the 1950s, still during the absence of German national unity.

But there are precedents. West Germany gained NATO protection in 1955 even though, like Ukraine, it was in dispute over occupied sovereign territory held by East Germany, a Soviet puppet. In similar fashion, NATOs defensive umbrella could reasonably be extended to cover the roughly 85% of Ukrainian territory Kyiv currently controls, he added.

Tisdall criticizes the posture of American and Western European leaders, who have been cautious, avoiding hasty decisions. The author does not see any validity in the existence of concerns about the possible impacts of Ukraine joining the bloc, stating that the actions of Western politicians are rooted in American and west European fears that Putin, provoked, might attack the west.

On the other hand, the analyst praises the posture of the NATOs Eastern European countries. According to him, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia the so called Bucharest Nine have a thankfully more robust stance than Westerners. With this, Tisdall endorses the fanatical anti-Russian state ideology that currently prevails in that region.

The US is trying to use foreign mercenaries to plug gaps in Ukraine - they are in for a rude awakening "IndyWatch Feed World"

Western mercenaries from countries other than the US are dying for Washington's interests while President Joe Biden warns Americans themselves to stay away. Most of the foreign mercenaries in Ukraine at this point aren't American, according to Russia's Channel One news. It's actually Poland and Canada that lead the charge, with the US coming in third. And now reports are starting to emerge of US intelligence attempting to fill the void with even more foreign recruits to fight for US interests against Russia in Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense estimates that about 2,000 of the approximately 7,000 'volunteers' have been killed. Recent reporting reveals a troubling trend among Western mercenary deaths: combatants whose military experience is virtually non-existent. Presumably it all looked like good Hollywood action hero fun from afar until the bullets started whizzing by.

Poland sets terms for full reconciliation with Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | July 12, 2023

The remains of thousands of Poles killed by Ukrainian nationalists during World War II must be found and properly buried, before the two nations can be fully reconciled, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said.

Morawiecki took part in a ceremony in Warsaw on Tuesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the massacres in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. An estimated 100,000 ethnic Poles were murdered by members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), the militia of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).

The slaughter took place between 1943 and 1945 amid the Nazi occupation. The nationalists allied themselves with the invaders, hoping to create a mono-ethnic Ukrainian state with their help. The mass killings, which Warsaw considers an act of genocide, were meant to shift the demographics in favor of the same goal. The killers also targeted other ethnic groups, such as Jews and Russians, as well as people they considered to be standing in their way.

Warsaw considers July 11, 1943 the peak of the atrocities, as the UPA on that day launched a coordinated attack on some 100 predominantly Polish villages and towns.

This crime wasnt carried out by a heartless apparatus of the state, but by people, who had turned in their hatred on those with whom they had shared an existence for years, for decades, for centuries, Morawiecki said.

The Polish prime minister stressed that there wont be full Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation until all the remains of the victims are buried in accordance with the Christian tradition.

Morawiecki went on to suggest that Ukraine, being a nation at war, and constantly losing its civilians to violence, must realize the feelings of the Polish people, while calling the Ukrainians neighbors and allies.

Groups supported by the Polish government are continuing their search for wartime dead in Ukraine, but cooperation with Kiev has not been entirely smooth. In 2017, Ukraine banned such activities, after a memorial to UPA fighters was dismantled in Poland. The pause was lifted in 2022, when permission to exhume the graves of victims in the Ukrainian village of Puzhnyky was granted to a Polish NGO.

The current Ukrainian government views the OUN, the UPA and their leaders as national heroes, as they fought for Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union. Prominent nationalists have streets named after them, while the birthday of Stepan Bandera, the OUN leader, is marked with annual torch marches.

Some Ukrainian officials, such as former ambassador to Germany Andrey Melnik, have denied the crimes of the nationalists.

CP/M Porting in a Few Hours "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

If youve ever wanted to watch someone bring CP/M up on a new system and you have a couple of hours to spare, check out the recorded live stream of [Poking Technology]. The system in question is an Agon Light, a modern board with a Z-80-derived CPU. If you want to get right to the porting part, you might want to skip about 31 minutes of the nearly 2.5-hour video.

The first half hour is more about the built-in assembler and the board in general. If youve ever ported CP/M before, you know it isnt as hard as bootstrapping a modern operating system. There are two major things you need: A BIOS, which is specific to your machine, and a BDOS, which is usually taken verbatim from the operating system sources. Your programs typically call one of the 40 or so functions in the BDOS.

The BIOS has about 20 functions you must provide and is mainly called by the BDOS. While BDOS worries about things like directories and file structure, the BIOS simply reports information about disks and devices and lets a caller directly access those things.

Part of the task of creating a BIOS involves building data structures to describe the disk hardware. You also provide a jump table with a few common functions. For the original CP/M there were only 15 functions. CP/M 2 added two more. CP/M 3 added a whopping 16 functions. The functions fall into three broad categories: system management (like BOOT and WBOOT), device I/O (like CONIN and PUNCH), and disk I/O (like...

US Legislator Tables Motion to Withdraw America from NATO "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sputnik 12.07.2023

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia argues that the US should only fund our countrys defense, not another countrys war.

US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has proposed a series of amendments to the proposed fiscal year 2024 defense budget, including one calling on President Joe Biden to begin the countrys withdrawal from NATO and suspend supplies to Kiev until the Ukrainian conflict is over.

A US House special committee earlier held hearings on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which would provide some $886 billion in funding for US military needs. Lawmakers introduced hundreds of tabled amendments to the bill, including those initiated by scandal-plagued Congresswoman Green.

In particular, one of the proposed amendments mandates the American president to take such steps as may be necessary to withdraw the United States from NATO. The other imposes a ban on the allocation of US federal funds to Ukraine until Biden can confirm to Congress that the conflict in that country has been resolved through diplomatic means.

In addition, the congresswoman looked to amend the draft national defense budget to prohibit the delivery of fourth-generation F-16 fighter jets and long-range missiles to Ukraine.

The NDAA should only fund our countrys defense, not another countrys war, Greene tweeted about her initiatives.

The day before, Matt Gaetz, a Republican congressman from Florida, made a statement that he intended to co-sponsor an amendment to the budget that would prohibit Washington from sending cluster munitions to Ukraine or any other country. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the delivery of such munitions would not end the conflict in Ukraine.

Reinventing cosmology: uOttawa research puts age of universe at 26.7 not 13.7 billion years "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Our universe could be twice as old as current estimates, according to a new study that challenges the dominant cosmological model and sheds new light on the so-called impossible early galaxy problem.

Our newly-devised model stretches the galaxy formation time by a several billion years, making the universe 26.7 billion years old, and not 13.7 as previously estimated, says author Rajendra Gupta, adjunct professor of physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa.

For years, astronomers and physicists have calculated the age of our universe by measuring the time elapsed since the Big Bang and by studying the oldest stars based on the redshift of light coming from distant galaxies. In 2021, thanks to new techniques and advances in technology, the age of our universe was thus estimated at 13.797 billion years using the Lambda-CDM concordance model.

Ukraine must show 'gratitude' to the West to keep support, UK defense minister warns Kiev at NATO summit "IndyWatch Feed World"

Ukraine must show "gratitude" to its allies, despite its disappointment over the way NATO framed Kyiv's future membership prospects, in order to maintain long-term Western public and political support, the British defense secretary warned on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Ben Wallace cautioned that the U.S. is heading for a presidential election next year, and lawmakers from countries making big military donations to Kyiv could face a political problem if they are met with Ukrainian anger. There is concern across Europe that NATO-skeptic Donald Trump could return as U.S. president. "Sometimes you have to persuade lawmakers on the Hill in America, you have to persuade doubting politicians in other countries that, you know, that is worth it, that it is worthwhile and that they are getting something for it," he said. "And whether you like it or not, that's the reality of it."

Llevaba ropa y muchas cosas ms.

Aquella escena pareca no tener fin.

New Tree Tech: Cutting-edge drones give reforestation a helping hand "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

This story is the third article of a four-part Mongabay mini-series exploring the latest technological solutions to support reforestation. Read Part One, Part Two and Part Four. Vast tracts of forest have been cleared by logging, degraded by a range of other human activities, consumed by wildfires, and ravaged by invasive insects. Restoring these forests is crucial to curbing global climate change and bringing wild species back from the brink of extinction. But the scale of the challenge before us is huge and time is short. Although some forests can recover naturally with the right protection and support, others need more intensive help in the form of replanting. This need has spawned heavily promoted tree-planting projects that tackle the challenge manually, sending thousands of volunteers into the field to plant saplings by hand, one by one. While these efforts are inspirational, theyre also labor-intensive and cumbersome to organize, and cant reach degraded land thats inaccessible by road or where volunteers are few. More importantly, they cant achieve reforestation at the planetwide scales or timeframe needed to address the climate and biodiversity crises and meet international reforestation targets. Clearly, whatever methods humanity settles on to restore millions of hectares of lost and degraded forest in the 21st century, it will require a herculean effort. But lacking Hercules, it looks like robots may be up to the job. Restoring hundreds of millions of hectares of lost and degraded forest worldwide is a formidable task, made more difficult by the fact that manyThis article was originally published on Mongabay

London Municipality, or Greater London Authority (GLA), Does Not Protect Its Own Workers From Crimes Committed in the Workplace "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

City of London Police and GLA (London Municipality): We heard Bill Gates signed an NDA; We won't even listen to you

Summary: The London Municipality, also known as Greater London Authority (GLA), turns its back on people who worked on its computer systems for nearly a decade; its not convenient to deal with victims of a crime, especially when the crime was committed on GLAs watch while GLA was sponsoring the perpetrators of the crime

THE series about crimes of Sirius Open Source is far from over. What we have here a formerly OK company that even funded the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for a couple of years turning into a criminal organisation, taking bribes in secret from Bill Gates (under an NDA) while besieging and bullying its own staff. This must be treated as a criminal matter, not a civil matter. Arrests should be made as soon as possible.

But what happens when the perpetrators of the crimes are connected to the British government, not just local authorities but also Home Office? Then it gets a little tricky or complicated for them to handle. Its almost like theyre asked to investigate themselves and hold themselves accountable.

As a recap, so far Ive contacted:

  2. Action Fraud (4 weeks, no action)
  3. My MP contacting Action Fraud (4 weeks, no response)
  4. GLA (London Municipality), whose computer systemd Ive worked on since 2013

Asian Development Banks climate commitments require greater accountability (commentary) "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

This July marks the deadline by when the Asian Development Bank (ADB) which describes itself as Asia and Pacifics Climate Bank committed to achieving full alignment with the goals of the 2016 Paris Agreement that aims to cap the rise in global temperatures. This comes on the heels of ADBs May 2023 announcement of the Innovative Finance Facility for Climate in Asia and the Pacific, which aims to invest billions of dollars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience for communities already suffering the impacts of the climate crisis in Asia an important goal. Yet these ambitions have no chance of success without an increased commitment to safeguards and accountability. From our work at Accountability Counsel with communities harmed by international investments, we know that development projects intending to do good can cause harm to people and the planet. In fact, even money intended to address the climate crisis can cause ecological destruction and unintended human rights impacts, and therefore be guilty of climate-washing. ADB should already know of these risks and commit to ending the cycle of ineffectiveness and harm. Climate finance requires climate justice  All types of investments, including those that fund climate solutions and those that the ADB alongside other multilateral development banks, now classify as universally aligned with the Paris Agreement have the potential to cause environmental and social harms. Israel-Lebanon: Hezbollah members 'wounded' in explosion at border

Members of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement were wounded on Wednesday in an explosion on the southern border with Israel, according to media reports.

Sources told Reuters the men were wounded in an "attack" and a security source told AFP the injuries were from "Israeli fire".

Initial reports from local media state that three members of Hezbollah were wounded in the incident.

The Israeli army said it foiled an attempt by Lebanese men to damage the border fence.

However, the Israeli news site Ynet said that Israeli troops had used "non-lethal" means to drive the men away.

There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.

According to Al Jazeera, the group is now conducting an investigation with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) to determine the source of the blast.

Israel's public broadcaster Kan said earlier that a group of Hezbollah men had set a fire at the border, setting off landmines, and that Israeli troops had fired warning shots during the incident.

An Israeli army spokesperson said in a statement that several individuals holding Hezbollah flags were seen firing flares towards Israel, and that the army pushed them...

Senators Call for Further Oversight, Consumer Protections in Contract for Deed Real Estate Transactions "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

A U.S. Senate subcommittee on Tuesday heard warnings about alternative home financing deals that leave unwitting buyers financially devastated and unscrupulous sellers free to resell the properties.

This gets to a point that I think all of you have made in one way or another, which is that these contracts are designed to fail, because thats how the seller makes more money, said U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., at a hearing of the Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development, which she chairs. The incentives are perverse.

In an interview, Smith said an investigation by ProPublica and Sahan Journal about contract for deed practices in Minnesota prompted the hearing. The investigation examined the impact on Somali Muslim families in the Twin Cities area who said they signed deals they didnt understand for homes with inflated prices and large down payments.

The subcommittee members discussed whether federal or state laws ought to apply to these deals and how consumers can be better protected.

Are there appropriate protections states can make to make sure that the market works without a bunch of folks who should have a special place in hell? asked Montana Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrat.

The hearing concerned several alternative home purchase methods, including contracts for deed, which are sometimes known as land contracts, as well as rent-to-own housing programs. Witnesses testified that low-income buyers, often people from communities of color who have been denied traditional mortgages or, because of their faith, choose not to use them, instead opt for these products.

Sarah Mancini, co-director of advocacy at the National Consumer Law Center, told senators...

Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur defeated Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday, beating her Kazakh opponent two sets to one.

The 28-year-old got the better of the third-seeded defending champion 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Jabeur will now play second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals on Thursday, after Belarusian Sabalenka beat American Madison Keys in straight sets earlier.

Jabeur told BBC Sport that she was elated with the result.

"I'm very happy with the performance. There was a lot of emotion out there especially playing someone who serves really well.

"It's frustrating to return but I'm glad I did everything, shouted, got angry then got calm and focused. Hopefully, I can keep managing my emotions like this for the next few matches."

'We didn't expect it'

Jabeur was born in Ksar Hellal, a small town in northeastern Tunisia, and grew up in the nearby coastal city of Sousse.

At the age of three, she was introduced to tennis by her mother, who played the sport recreationally. She often trained in hotels and tourist resorts, owing to the lack of courts in tennis clubs.

EU Media Freedom Act: A Media Privilege in Content Moderation Is a Really Bad Idea "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Introduced in September 2022 by the European Commission as part of the new push for European Union Democracy, the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) seeks to promote media pluralism and independence across the EU.

EMFA in a Nutshell

The EMFA sets out rights and obligations for media service providers, including rules on transparency about media ownership and protections against political interference. The proposed bill also introduces valuable safeguards against surveillance powers of states and the use of spyware against them. EFF has warned for years about the dangers of powerful state-sponsored malware, and the Pegasus project shows the need to take the abuse of power by governments seriously.

Article 17: Media Exemption

One of the most controversial provisions under the EMFA is Article 17, which endeavors to address the treatment and moderation of media content by Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), such as Twitter and Facebook. Article 17 requires VLOPs to give special privileged treatment to media outlets by notifying them before content is removed. Should VLOPs remove content without sufficient grounds, Article 17 enables media service providers to find an amicable solution through dialogue with the VLOP. Article 17 also provides that VLOPs must create fast-track systems for actors to self-declare as independent and regulated media providers, hence leaving it to online platforms to decide over the status of a wide range of media actors.

Content shared by media service providers on VLOPs should not be exempt from moderation protocols through a carte blanche exception from regulation provisions.

If passed, Article 17 would:

  1. facilitate an environment of disinformation wherein harmful content would remain online if posted by a self-declared media service provider.
  2. undermine existing provisions outlined under the Digital Services Act (DSA)...

The challenge of the future (and lessons from the recent past) in the Pan Amazon "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The current development trajectory of the Pan Amazon is uncertain. The ongoing investment in protected areas and Indigenous territories has created a solid foundation for conservation of the regions biodiversity. The dramatic reduction in deforestation in Brazil probably avoided an ecological catastrophe and identified key public policies with the potential for bending the arc of Amazonian development. Nonetheless, the momentum of fifty years of chaotic economic growth, disregard for the law and the economic power of vested interests continue to impede efforts to halt the environmental degradation that threatens the long-term integrity of the Pan Amazon. Looking forward, multiple interrelated phenomena will determine the future of the region: some would support the development of a sustainable economy, while others would reinforce the behaviors linked to conventional business models. Quite a few are neutral in nature and have impacts that could be mitigated in a well-managed and diversified regional economy. They can be organised in the following four categories, based on their probability of occurrence and their potential to contribute to a sustainable future. Things that will definitely happen Highway networks will continue to expand; existing roads will be upgraded; it is just a matter of time. Agricultural enterprises with overseas export markets will expand; this will displace some producers toward the forest frontier (ranchers) and motivate others to expand existing production models (smallholders). The extractive industries will dominate the economies of jurisdictions rich in mineral resources; their environmental performance will improve, but they will still create long-term environmental liabilities. Youve Got Mail: Sorting and the USPS "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Snail mail. You may not think much of it these days, but the mail doesnt stop and it never has. Every type of mail from postcards and letters to large envelopes and packages of all sizes moves every single day all over the US, even though it isnt typically delivered on Sundays. Dealing with the ever-increasing volume of physical mail has called for the invention and evolution of automatic mail sorting machines that are used by both postal facilities and businesses alike.

While mail sorting machines have grown and matured over the years, the human element of the task remains intact. As long as people type addresses, write them by hand, and/or print them in handwriting fonts by the hundreds, there will need to be humans on hand to verify at least a few of them that are really hard to read.

There are roughly a dozen different types of mail sorting machines in 2023. In this series, were going to take a look at most of them, along with many other aspects of the United States Postal Service and its history.

Against travel "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

A few years ago, when I told family and friends that I was going to retire, many of them assumed that I would spend a large portion of my time traveling. After I came to California, many of the people I have met here seem to enjoy traveling. While I do not dismiss the idea that they might be getting a lot out of it, I have done very little traveling since I retired since I do not enjoy it, especially if it involves airlines. I have done a lot of traveling in my life, either out of the desire to see family or for work. Seeing new places for its own sake has very little allure for me and now that I do not have to do it, I avoid doing so. I only travel if it means visiting family and friends, nowadays only going to see my grandchildren.

While I enjoy learning about other places and people and cultures, taking a short visit to those places does not satisfy that need. I would much rather read about them or see them on TV. The closest I get to nature is through David Attenborough documentaries and that suits me fine.

So I was interested to read this article by Agnes Collard who shares my antipathy to travel and makes the case against it.

What is the most uninformative statement that people are inclined to make? My nominee would be I love to travel. This tells you very little about a person, because nearly everyone likes to travel; and yet people say it, because, for some reason, they pride themselves both on having travelled and on the fact that they look forward to doing so.

The opposition team is small but articulate. G. K. Chesterton wrote that travel narrows the mind. Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a fools paradise. Socrates and Immanuel Kantarguably the two greatest philosophers of all timevoted with their feet, rarely leaving their respective home towns of Athens and Knigsberg. But the greatest hater of travel, ever, was the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa, whose wonderful Book of Disquiet crackles with outrage:

I abhor new ways of life and unfamiliar places. . . . The idea of travelling nauseates me. . . . Ah, let those who dont exist travel! . . . Travel is for those who cannot feel. . . . Only extreme poverty of the imagination justifies having to move around to feel.

If you are inclined to dismiss this as contrarian posturing, try shifting the object of your thought from your own travel to that of others. At home or abroad, one tends to avoid touristy activities. Tourism is what we call travelling when other people are doing it. And, although people like to talk about their travels, few of us like to listen to them. Such talk resembles academic writing and reports of dreams: forms of communication driven more by the needs of the producer than the consumer.

Travel gets branded as an ach...

Researchers Discover Safe, Easy, and Affordable Way to Store and Retrieve Hydrogen "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers discover safe, easy, and affordable way to store and retrieve hydrogen:

Researchers at the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS) in Japan have discovered a compound that uses a chemical reaction to store ammonia, potentially offering a safer and easier way to store this important chemical.

This discovery, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on July 10, makes it possible not only to safely and conveniently store ammonia, but also the important hydrogen is [sic] carries. This finding should help lead the way to a decarbonized society with a practical hydrogen economy.

For society to make the switch from carbon-based to hydrogen-based energy, we need a safe way to store and transport hydrogen, which by itself is highly combustible. One way to do this is to store it as part of another molecule and extract it as needed. Ammonia, chemically written as NH3, makes a good hydrogen carrier because three hydrogen atoms are packed into each molecule, with almost 20% of ammonia being hydrogen by weight.

The problem, however, is that ammonia is a highly corrosive gas, making it difficult to store and use. Currently, ammonia is generally stored by liquefying it at temperatures well below freezing in pressure-resistant containers. Porous compounds can also store ammonia at room temperature and pressure, but storage capacity is low, and the ammonia cannot always be retrieved easily.

The new study reports the discovery of a perovskite, a material with a distinctive repetitive crystal structure, which can easily store ammonia and also allows easy and complete retrieval at relatively low temperatures.

The research team led by Masuki Kawamoto at RIKEN CEMS focused on the perovskite ethylammonium lead iodide (EAPbI3), chemically written as CH3CH2NH3PbI3. They found that its one-dimensional columnar structure undergoes a chemical reaction with ammonia at room temperature and pressure, and dynamically transforms into a two-dimensional layered structure called lead iodide hydroxide, or Pb(OH)I.

Nazis of Color "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In May 2023, when Mauricio Garcia killed eight people in an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, it seemed like just another senseless mass murder similar to innumerable school shootings. But when it came out that he identified as a neo-nazi, outrage spread: calling a Latino that was just too much for many.

However, a person of color carrying out a mass shooting as a neo-nazi came as less of a surprise to antifascist researchers. Several years ago one of us was introduced to a Black man named Mohammed Abdali. While he was vouched for by an antifascist with impeccable credentials, he didnt seem right. Soon after it turned out he wasnt: Gabriel Diaz, his real name, had previously made the papers when he was suspended from his job as a New York City cab driver for wearing a swastika armband at work. And this wasnt just cosplay: a TV news interview showed he was well-versed in National Socialist ideology. And that too was no quirk, as it came out that he was spying on antifascists for the National Socialist Movement (NSM), at the time the largest U.S. neo-nazi party.

Diaz is just one of many neo-nazis who are also people of color. While Black neo-nazis are rare, in comparison Latino neo-nazis are fairly common. Latin America itself is honeycombed with neo-nazi groups, and is just one of the many places around the world where they can be found.

This may seem counterintuitive, if not nonsensical, for those who think of neo-nazism as the most extreme form of white supremacy which seeks the extermination of people of color. But the history of National Socialism is far more complex than many think, and the history of non-white National Socialists stretches back nearly a century.

This report, contributed by authors from North and South America, offers a glimpse into the complex world of neo-nazis amid people of color in many countries. For more on these groups and movements see Unicorn Riots Far-Right Investigations Desk page.

When in Rome, Do as the Americans Do? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By David Swanson, World BEYOND War, July 12, 2023

There may be more U.S. tourists in Rome than Romans. Its hard to get away from them impossible if you are yourself one. But its a bit of a shame how theyve taken over. Every square and street is wall-to-wall people. Theyre not all American people. Some of them are Italian. Some of them are even Roman. But they all speak English. They all dress like Americans. Every bar and osteria caters to English-speaking tourists and their tastes. Via Veneto is a cartoon of itself, featuring not just a Hard Rock Cafe but even the headquarters of a government Department of Made In Italy with the Made in Italy in English. The Spanish Steps has been taken over by a press event for Tom Ill never make a sequel to Top Gun because that would be war propaganda Cruise at which the majority of the fans are tourists. Youre as likely to find yourself alone and unjostled in a church or an alleyway as you are to forget the smell of the people youre squeezed up against in a bus.

And yet, Rome remains stupendous, which is why the people have overrun it. The architecture and artwork remain staggeringly beautiful if the stains from the car exhaust are scrubbed off sometimes. The cars have multiplied like the people, but driving has been maintained as a sport, as much as a means of transportation. Walking is still the best way to travel and will remain enjoyable until the temperatures get into the 110s Fahrenheit, and who knows maybe well adapt to that, too. Plus, the rentable scooters that have been strategically placed in the middle of every narrow path may seem an impediment until youve tried riding them. They are an individualistic, capitalistic, and chaotic development, but a Roman scooter ride is uniquely Roman. And Roman food cannot be made less than fantastic, no matter how hard the touristerias try.

Part of what concerns me as a vacationer who cant quite forget the world while on vacation is simply the unsustainable population growth of our species, combined with the number of its members who are able to contribute to the burning of jet fuel I mean direct...

On 20 January, three suicide drones targeted al-Tanf, a military base in southeastern Syria hosting US forces.

The attack didn't cause significant losses: the troops there shot down two of the drones, while the third exploded after colliding with a building belonging to an allied Syrian rebel group, US forces said at the time.

Two days later, an unknown armed group called "the Inheritors" claimed responsibility.

Its statement, published by websites linked to Iranian-backed armed factions, was adorned with a green title that read "Islamic Resistance in Iraq - Formation of the Inheritors".

"No one can ever stop our operations," the group said, dating the statement as the same day the operation was carried out.

Superconducting qubit foundry accelerates progress in quantum research "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Advancing the state of the art in superconducting qubit hardware requires knowledge across a range of disciplines, including materials, fabrication, circuit design and simulation, packaging, cryogenics, low-noise measurement, hardware-software interfacing, and quantum compilation. As understanding of materials and processes has advanced over time, fabricating the highest-quality qubits increasingly relies on millions of dollars of fabrication equipment and countless hours of process development and sustainment.

It has become increasingly challenging for individual organizations to maintain this full stack of expertise, particularly as circuits become more complex to design, fabricate, and measure, Schwartz says. As a result, superconducting qubit hardware research has remained centralized into a relatively small number of laboratories and large universities capable of developing and sustaining this expertise.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is one of these laboratories, with more than 20 years of research and development in superconducting qubits and demonstrations of world-leading qubit performance. The qubits are made on-site at the Microelectronics Laboratory, considered to be one of the U.S. governments most advanced foundries, and in specialized prototyping facilities. The collective expertise and equipment of this facility have made it possible to stand-up the SQUILL Foundry.

Physicists measure electrons topological spin "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

An international team of physicists has succeeded in measuring a property of the electron known as topological spin winding for the first time. The team obtained this result by studying the behaviour of electrons in so-called kagome metals, which are materials that have unique quantum properties related to their physical shape, or topology. The work could advance our understanding of the physics of superconductors and other systems that contain strongly correlated electrons.

Kagome metals are named after a traditional Japanese basket-weaving technique that produces a lattice of interlaced, symmetrical triangles with shared corners. When the atoms of a metal or other conductor are arranged in this kagome pattern, their electrons behave in unusual ways. For example, the wavefunctions of the electrons can interfere destructively, resulting in highly localized electronic states in which the particles interact strongly with each other. These strong interactions lead to a range of quantum phenomena, including magnetic ordering of unpaired electrons spins that can produce, for example, ferro-or antiferromagnetic phases, superconducting structures, quantum spin liquids and abnormal topological phases. All these phases have applications in advanced nanoelectronics and spintronics technologies.

In the new work, researchers led by Domenico Di Sante of the University of Bologna in Italy studied the spin and electronic structure of XV6Sn6, where X is a rare-earth element. These recently-discovered kagome metals contain a Dirac electronic band and a nearly flat electronic band. At the point at which these bands meet, an effect called spin-orbit coupling creates a narrow gap between the bands. This spin-orbit coupling also creates special type of electronic ground state at the materials surface.

Being a good scientist might be harder than you think "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

You know, this guy was a terrible scientist by most criteria

The ideas in this paper, Ten simple rules for socially responsible science, ought to be explicitly spelled out in any grad program, especially since many of the incentives in science careers tend to oppose their rules. Read the whole thing, but here are a few of my comments on their list.

Rule 1: Get diverse perspectives early on

Some people seem to believe in the myth of the lone genius who comes up with brilliant ideas and executes themand then gets a Nobel prize. It doesnt work that way. Ever. Its totally collaborative. In my classes I literally force students to work in teams in the lab, and there are always a few students who insist on going it alone. Thats missing the point!

Rule 2: Understand the limits of your design with regard to your claims

Its tempting to go too far and make extravagant justifications for your work. Studying spiders will lead to a cure for cancer! Not really, but it would be a big boost to getting grant money if it were true.

Rule 3: Incorporate underlying social theory and historical contexts

Ive experienced this unfortunate attitude that the only work that matters is stuff thats been published in the last five years. Ive had students ask me if it was OK to cite a paper from 1991 in their thesis project. Yeah? Why not? I cited papers from the 19th century in my PhD thesis! Dig deep, go interdisciplinary, drink from the Pierian spring, itll make your work better.

Rule 4: Be transparent about your hypothesis and analyses

Obviously. An experiment is not a fishing expedition.

Rule 5: Report your results and limitations accurately and transparently

Uh-oh. Its shocking that we have to spell that out.

Rule 6: Choose your terminology carefully

This is about jargon. Ive written a few things where Ive totally lost people because they dont know what Im talking about. Its also very common for me to make lots of comments in first drafts of student papers that they need to spell out that acronym and need to explain their terminology.

Rule 7: Seek a rigorous review and editorial processes

Its common to see resentment at reviewer comm...

A double standard "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

The pathologization of migrants in Tunisia and France shows how race and poverty shape our understanding of belonging.

Tunisia. Image credit xingtu via Flickr CC BY-NC 2.0.

On July 5, two Tunisian parliamentarians accused sub-Saharan African migrants of spreading tuberculosis among Tunisians. The parliamentary session was set to discuss the increasing absence of basic medication in Tunisia, an absence that a colleague working for a pharmaceutical company in Tunis attributed to the states inability to pay for these medications on the global market. Instead, the parliamentary discussion turned into a free racial attacks session. One parliamentarian claimed that unwanted migrants had infected at least two Tunisians in Sfaxa coastal city in the south of the countryand that anyone among us can be next!

Since the anti-Sub-Saharan-migrant speech made in February by Tunisian President Kais Saied, which called for the eradication of these migrants from Tunisian territory, Sfax has become the site of what the Tunisian media described as degenerating [situation] between the inhabitants and irregular sub-Saharan migrants. The terms migrants, illegal, and Africans are used synonymously, not only in popular discourse but also in the states own discourse to produce a homogenous social imagination of young Black men with criminal intentions.

In parallel, Paris has been a site of what many friends call social disturbancesprotests over the early months of this year against the law pushing the retirement age from 62 to 64, and, since late June, protests against the murder of 17-year-old Nahel by the police in Nanterre on the outskirts of Paris. Times corrects false claim about Palestinian killed in Jenin "IndyWatch Feed War"

We recently posted about an article by Catherine Philp at The Times that attempted to undermine evidence showing that Abdulrahman Hasan Ahmad Hardan, one of the Palestinians killed during the two-day IDF military operation in Jenin, was in fact a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist.

One of the arguments made by Philp in an effort to prove her point can be seen in the following sentence:

When Islamic Jihad posted photographs of its claimed martyrs, Abdulrahman was the only one not pictured with a firearm.

However, as a post on the official Telegram channel of PIJ shows, Abdulrahman was NOT the only one of the eight fighters pictured without a firearm. As you can see in their graphic, the bottom five Palestinians out of the eight shown similarly arent holding a weapon.

Editors promptly upheld our complaint and deleted the sentence in question.

This correction is important, because it further erodes the Times extraordinarily flimsy argument that the 16 year old Palestinians was not a PIJ fighter.

China hits back at entire Western industries with rare-earth elements restrictions "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | July 12, 2023

It seems that China has finally had enough of foreign attempts to slow down or effectively stop its technological advances. The Asian giant is now making very concrete moves against the United States and its numerous vassals and satellite states, targeting their own high-tech industries, including their massive Military Industrial Complex (MIC). The troubled Biden administration (but also the previous one) has started an essentially suicidal economic confrontation with Beijing, particularly against its high-tech sector, by far the fastest growing in the world. This includes a US attack on Chinese semiconductor advances.

In response, last week Beijing decided to impose export restrictions on two rare-earth elements it produces in abundance (up to 95% of global production, depending on the source) gallium and germanium. The two metals are heavily imported by the countries of the political West and its satellites, particularly for semiconductor production. It also seems that Chinas timing for this was perfect, as it greatly strengthened its negotiating position, particularly as it came mere days before US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited China last week. In other words, Beijing is finally capitalizing on its absolute dominance in rare-earth mining and refining.

As such capacities are sorely lacking in the political West, China believes that this move would finally open up talks and help convince the US that any future restrictions on microchip and semiconductor development in China will be equally (if not more) painful for the political West. On July 7, The Wall Street Journal reported that Yellen and the Chinese Premier Li Qiang discussed economic competition that would benefit both countries and precisely this was almost certainly one of the hotly debated topics during closed doors talks. The US has a very clear and easy choice in this regard. Unfortunately, its extremely likely to choose confrontation once again.

Chinas pushback is already yielding results, as the global prices of the aforementioned rare-earth elements have already spiked and continue to grow. Gallium soared 27% last week, traders who spoke with Bloomberg complained, adding that the gallium market, although well-supplied for the time being, will eventually be hit by export controls starting next month, causing a flurry of panic buying as traders are scrambling to purchase the metal in greater quantitie...

ALERT ~ Frack Gas Well Blowing After Accident in Eastern Ohio ~ 450 Residents Evacuated "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Modern frack well pads may have 12 or more well heads at pressure

Gas released from well in Ohio Valley; 450 people evacuated

From a News Flash by John Lynch, WTRF News 7, Wheeling, on July 11, 2023

(WTRF) Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Tuesday the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management is responding to a natural gas release from a well in Columbiana County.

The incident happened on the Tarka Pad on Fairfield School Road near Columbiana. ODNR is coordinating with local first responders, the operator of the well (Hilcorp Energy Company), Ohio EPA and oil and gas emergency contractors to mitigate the situation.

Hilcorp Energy Company reported that a third-party contractor struck a wellhead on the pad around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. Emergency shut-down devices for the remaining 12 wells on the pad were activated and all remaining wells and pipelines are shut-in. Hilcorp has secured the services of a well control specialist who is anticipated on site Tuesday evening to begin operations to regain control of the well.

Local emergency management officials instituted a one-mile evacuation zone shortly after the incident occurred and more than 450 people have been safely evacuated. No injuries have been reported.

Ohio EPA is on-scene providing incident support. Officials say baseline air monitoring is occurring and will continue until the situation is under control. Any updates regarding evacuations will be made by local emergency management officials.

ODNR says they will continue to work with all state and local authorities to monitor the situation until the operator regains control of the well. Unless you are ordered to evacuate, stay in your home with the doors and windows closed. If you can close the fresh-air intake of your air conditioning system, do so, according to officials.

>>> If you are experiencing unusual shortness of breath, dizziness, or clumsiness that you believe may be related to this contact a healthcare provider. A claims hotline has been established for those who have been affected by the incident. The number is (877) 872-1288.

Context vs. Content? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I sure hear a lot about science education in New Zealand, and I dont know why. The latest is some upset about the New Zealand science curriculum. I also dont understand why.

draft school science curriculum contains no mention of physics, chemistry or biology.

The so-called fast draft said science would be taught through five contexts the Earth system, biodiversity, food, energy and water, infectious diseases and at the cutting edge.

It was sent to just a few teachers for their feedback ahead of its release for consultation next month, but some were so worried by the content they leaked it to their peers.

Teachers who had seen the document told RNZ they had grave concerns about it. It was embarrassing, and would lead to appalling declines in student achievement, they said.

One said the focus on four specific topics was likely to leave pupils bored with science by the time they reached secondary school.

But another teacher told RNZ the document presented a massive challenge to teachers and the critics were over-reacting.

Its the difference from whats existed before and the lack of content is whats scaring people. Its fear of the unknown, he said.

Okay. I contrast that with the Minnesota public school curriculum, which delineates the big three science subjects of physics, chemistry, and biology theres a year dedicated to each of those, a very traditional approach. But obviously, thats too broad to be practical, and we also have a more detailed breakdown of what specifically needs to be taught within each.

The NZ schools would provide a different framework. Instead of the traditional topical breakdown, its centered around broader themes and questions. Is that bad? The real test is in the details of implementation. They could also have science standards that are identical to Minnesotas, for instance, but placed within an interdisciplinary program (thats what I see in those five contexts, which are all interrelated and overlapping with physics, chemistry, and biology). It sounds like it would be hard to do well, especially in comparison to well-established curricula, but the devil is in the details, and Im not seeing any details anywhere, as is unsurprising if this is just a leaked draft.

I guess Im interested in the fact...

Navigating the Currents: The NATO Vilnius Summit "IndyWatch Feed War"

As the world continues to reel from ongoing geopolitical challenges, the upcoming NATO Vilnius summit finds itself at the crux of defining the alliances future stance. From dealing with internal politics and the complexities of enlargement to formulating a consensus toward the Russia-Ukraine war, the summit carries high stakes for NATO. The following report will delve into these issues, focusing on the dynamics within the alliance and the implications for its current and prospective members.

Internal politics of NATO

NATO, an alliance rooted in collective defense, is not immune to internal politics. The differing perspectives within its ranks over critical issues such as potential new memberships and the stance towards the Russia-Ukraine conflict add to the complexity of the summits agenda. The United States and Germany have displayed a cautious stance towards Ukraines NATO membership, concerned about the potential implications this could have in the broader alliance. In contrast, Baltic members like Lithuania and Poland are more welcoming and eager to sustain the blocs interest in expansion.

Microsoft mitigated an attack by Chinese threat actor Storm-0558 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Microsoft announced it has mitigated a cyber attack by a China-linked threat actor, tracked as Storm-0558, which targeted customer emails.

Microsoft announced it has mitigated an attack conducted by a China-linked threat actor, tracked as Storm-0558, which targeted customer emails.

Storm-0558 threat actors focus on government agencies in Western Europe and were observed conducting cyberespionage, data theft, and credential access attacks. The attack was reported by a customer on June 16, 2023. The investigation revealed that the attack began on May 15, 2023, when Storm-0558 gained access to email accounts affecting approximately 25 organizations, including government agencies as well as related consumer accounts of individuals likely associated with these organizations.

The attackers forged authentication tokens to access user email using an acquired Microsoft account (MSA) consumer signing key.

Our telemetry indicates that we have successfully blocked Storm-0558 from accessing customer email using forged authentication tokens. No customer action is required. reads the post published by Microsoft. As with any observed nation-state actor activity, Microsoft has contacted all targeted or compromised organizations directly via their tenant admins and provided them with important information to help them investigate and respond.

Microsoft researchers discovered that the threat actors gained access to customer email accounts using Outlook Web Access in Exchange Online (OWA) and Outlook.com by forging authentication tokens to access user email.

The attackers used an acquired MSA key to forge the tokens to access OWA and Outlook.com. The attackers exploited a token validation issue to impersonate Azure AD users and gain access to enterprise mail.

Microsoft added that it is not aware of any abuses of Azure AD keys or any other MSA keys by this threat actor.

We assess this adversary is focused on espionage, such as gaining access to email systems for intelligence collection. This type of espionage-motivated adversary seeks to abuse credentials and gain access to data residing in sensitive systems. concludes Charlie Bell, executive vice president of Microsoft Security, said.

4 feet of summer snow on road to Chandratal lake hindering evacuation of 293 stranded tourists in Himachal Pradesh, India "IndyWatch Feed World"

Heavy snow on the way to Chandratal Lake from Losar in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district has proved a major deterrent for the district administration to evacuate the 293 stranded tourists out of the area safely for the past four days. The tourists were stranded at Chandratal since Saturday due to blockade of road in the region. On Tuesday, a rescue team comprising the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel, local youths and officials led by Kaza ADC Rahul Jain moved towards Chandratal from Losar, but heavy snow on the Losar-Chandratal road disrupted their access to the site. The BRO started the snow clearing operation on the road on Tuesday and were able to restore only 12km of road from Losar towards Chandratal. According to officials, 25-km-long road is still covered under thick blanket of snow upto Chandratal, where up to 4 feet of snow has been reported.

History Helps Vietnam Navigate Its Maritime Relations "IndyWatch Feed War"

All nations understand that they must deal with outside pressures from other states, but Vietnam knows this better than most from their past experience with French colonialism, the Second Indochina War with the United States, and violations in their maritime waters by Chinese vessels.

Strong headwinds never fail to deter Chinese coast guard vessels and fishing trawlers from sailing into Vietnams exclusive economic zone (EEZ). While most policy analysts simply regard Beijings brazen acts of intimidation as routine, Vietnamese citizens recoil since they are all too familiar with Chinese advances into their sovereign territory.

Last month, a Chinese research vessel, Xiang Yang Hong, protected by an entourage of a dozen other ships, was dispatched into Vietnams EEZs oil and gas fields. This expansion of Chinas maritime militia has been widely recognized as a maneuver to achieve their control in disputed waters.

This unauthorized survey action was met by a rare public protest and resulted in the ships departure from the area.

In a Voice of America interview, Van Pham, head of the nonprofit South China Sea Chronicle Initiative says, Exploring the deep South China Sea has become Chinas strategy for obtaining valuable information for economic and military intelligence.

Pham and other commentators may recount the founder of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minhs quote, Land is the house, and sea is the door. How can we protect the house without guarding the door? The nations revolutionary leader and the Communist Party (CPV) acknowledge that their East Sea (SCS) is central to its national security and territorial integrity.

By guarding the sea, Vietnam seeks to safeguard its maritime sovereignty and protect its territorial claims. Despite its remarkable economic, industrial, and technological strides achieved over the past two decades, Vietnam faces real challenges in preventing Chinese vessels from entering its waters.

The sheer vastness of the maritime area, the complexity of disputes, and the disparity in naval capabilities between Vietnam and China make it difficult for Vietnam to keep Chinese boats out of their East Sea.

In 1974, in a bloody conflict, China annexed the Paracel Islands. It also failed to honor all of its law of the sea agreements including one reached in 2011 that sought to contain the dispute over the sea and the Paracels.

China, as a major super regional power, continues to rewrite the rules of freedom of navigation as it bolsters its maritime claims and exploits vital marine resources. Of the more than 3.1 million fishing vessels in Asia, China operates 864,000 of them according to a...

Sudan's foreign ministry rejects deployment of African peacekeeping force

Decision deals a blow to efforts to resolve armed conflict between Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces

Sudan's foreign ministry has dismissed a regional African summit's bid to deploy peacekeeping forces to protect civilians as the country enters its fourth month of armed conflict.

The ministry, which is attached to the Sudanese army led by military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, had turned down calls from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to deploy a peacekeeping mission.

The decision on Wednesday dealt a blow to efforts to resolve the armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which started in mid-April.

IGAD is an East African regional body that called on all Sudanese parties on Monday to start new peace negotiations during a summit in Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa. IGAD made a bid to deploy the joint East Africa Standby Force (EASF) to protect civilians and provide humanitarian aid.

The Sudanese army boycotted the IGAD mediation efforts on Monday and rejected the call by IGAD on Wednesday for Sudan to accept peacekeepers.

SuSE Take On Red Hat, Forking RHEL "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

One of the Linux stories of the moment has come from Red Hat, with their ongoing efforts to make accessing the source of their Red Hat Enterprise Linux product a paid-for only process. This has caused consternation and annoyance alike, from the open source community angry at any liberties taken with the GPL, and from the community of RHEL users and customers concerned as to what it might mean for them.

Now a new player has entered the fray in the form of SuSe, who have announced the creation of an RHEL fork with the intention of maintaining a freely-available Red Hat compatible operating system distribution.

This is good news for all who use Red Hat derived software and we expect the likes of Rocky Linux will be taking a close look at it, but its also a canny move from the European company as they no doubt hope to tempt away some of those commercial Red Hat customers with a promise of stability and their existing experience supporting Red Hat users through their mixed Linux support packages. We hope theyll continue to maintain their relationship with the open source world, and that the prospect of their actions unleashing a new commercial challenge causes Red Hat to move away from the brink a little.

40% of US attack submarines are out for repair, double what the Navy had estimated "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Naval Sea Systems Command believes that "planning, material availability, and shipyard execution" is to blame, as per a statement issued in response to the new data. According to previously undisclosed data by the US Navy published by the Congressional Research Service, 18 of the 49 attack submarines - 37% - were out of commission and in repair just this year - which is double what the Navy estimated. This data leaves the US at a high disadvantage against China's quantitatively superior fleet. CRS naval analyst Ronald O'Rourke said in a report on July 6 that the maintenance backlog has "substantially reduced" the number of nuclear submarines that are considered operational at any moment, which cuts the "force's capacity for meeting day-to-day mission demands and potentially putting increased operational pressure" on submarines currently in service.

THE pundits ask aloud if Facebook can swallow Twitter [1], seeing that Bluesky is barely talked about anymore [2] (its where Jack Dorsey went, but they suffered a slow start with relatively disappointing adoption numbers). Remember Mastodon? It has problems of its own and some people wrongly believe Facebook can help. Facebook can actually do a lot of harm, in methods that are akin to embrace and extend. Facebook can actually do a lot of harm, in methods that are akin to embrace and extend. At the moment the media focuses on just two options [3-4], even in the spamfarm known as CNET [5-6]. There are already signs of censorship opportunism [7] and Engadget is trying to capitalise on the sudden interest [8-10]. A lot of the discussion focuses on the wrong things, e.g. boredom [11]. What is the future of the Orange Order? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Today, across Northern Ireland, thousands of Orange Men will be parading for the 12th of July commemorations. But what is the future of the loyal orders?

Like most institutions, their numbers have been declining. From a high point of 90,000 in the 1960s to 34,000 in 2012, I suspect the figure for active members today is more like 20,000.

What is the place of the Orange Order in the 21st Century? Are they just quirky historical relic, or do they have an active role in todays society?

A few months ago, I got a tour of Clifton St Orange Hall in Belfast as part of the North Belfast Festival. It was fascinating to see inside the building that many of us pass if you are ever on the Westlink. If I remember correctly, the statue of King Billy on the roof is the only horse statue in Northern Ireland.

I was very impressed with our tour guide, who honestly answered every question asked of him; they really should do tours more often as it is a fascinating building.

My granny was from the Shankill, and while I never met my great-grandfather, he may have been a member of the Orange Order and had meetings in this building. Not sure what he thought of his daughter running off with a guy from the Falls. I cant imagine he was too happy.

Clifton St Orange Hall is frozen in time, like walking into 1920. All the rooms are as they would have been 100 years ago, I suspect the only thing that has changed are the drinks prices in the function hall.

The memorials to the dead of the First World War are pretty extensive and quite touching. WW1 decimated the ranks of Orange Lodge members, and the ghosts of those young men who never came home haunt the very fabric of the building.

Massie, who is considered to have played an important role in efforts to end the Cold War, said in an interview on Tuesday that her desire is now to help Washington and Moscow start talking again. "I believe that we [the US] need Russia, and Russia needs us," Massie argued.

What to expect from NATO Summit 2023 "IndyWatch Feed World"

The trajectory of the Ukraine war hangs in the balance. All eyes are on the US President Joe Biden's arrival in Vilnius for the NATO summit meeting (June 11-12.) Biden got a big boost already from Turkish President Recep Erdogan's commitment to transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to Trkiye's Grand National Assembly for swift ratification. That this commitment was forthcoming ahead of Biden's one-on-one meeting with Erdogan in Vilnius has great optics too, which will inevitably strengthen his hands to forge a NATO consensus on the way forward in the Ukraine war. Biden's statement said, "I stand ready to work with President Erdogan and Turkiye on enhancing defence and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area." The wording skirts the Ukraine war specifically, but is indicative of Erdogan returning to the NATO fold like a prodigal son having struck a far-reaching deal for his country Erdogan had mentioned the resumption of Turkiye's accession process with the EU as the West's...

Human skulls suggest use in necromancy during Roman-era in cave near Jerusalem "IndyWatch Feed World"

A cave in the Jerusalem Hills may once have served as a local oracle where people communed with the dead in the hopes of learning about the future. Known as the Te'omim Cave, the creepy crevice is littered with human skulls and other items associated with necromancy, and is described by researchers as a possible "portal to the underworld". Analyzing the discoveries made at the cave, the authors of a new study suggest that Te'omim might have hosted "secret rites involving necromancy and communication with the dead, mainly by witches." "These rites were usually conducted within tombs or burial caves, but sometimes they took place in a nekyomanteion (or nekromanteion) - an 'oracle of the dead'," explain the researchers. "These shrines were generally located in caves or next to water sources that were believed to be possible portals to the underworld."

Anyone living near the Paraopeba River, which runs through the state of Minas Gerais, remembers what happened to its waters. Along its 510-kilometer (317-mile) stretch, the river still passes through 35 cities in the state, but it is no longer the river it once was. Its dead state is visible at a glance now once a clean water source, it has been substituted by the devastating reality of a river basin contaminated by 13 million cubic meters (459 million cubic feet) of mining waste. The rupture of the Crrego do Feijo tailings dam owned by Vale S.A. on Jan. 25, 2019, in Brumadinho (MG), resulted in the deaths of 272 people one of the most expressive and visible consequences of predatory mining practices that have, for decades, masqueraded as one of Minas Gerais main economic activities. Today, the railway cutting across the state carries trains loaded with tons of iron ore blowing their whistles day and night reminders of the fact that little has changed since one of the worst environmental crimes in Brazils history was committed. Analyses carried out by the cities of Brumadinho, Mrio Campos, So Joaquim de Bicas and Juatuba found the waters of the Paraopeba River unsuitable for use and not recommended for any purpose, from fishing to personal use. The 26 municipalities in the Paraopeba River Basin are home to some 200,000 people. Four years after the event, Vale and TV Sd the German company that certified the dams safety beforeThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Trump Can Host Saudi Golf Tournaments or Run for President, but Not Both "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Imagine a scenario in which presidential son and serial grifter Hunter Biden owns a bowling alley. Then the China-funded Sino-American Bowling League chooses Bidens Bowlarama as the venue for its season-ending Bowling Bonanza. Terms of the deal are not disclosed.

Do you know what would happen next? The head of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) would literally explode, along with that of every congressional Republican. Thats what.

And rightfully so.

Yet hardly anybody seems to be batting an eyelash while former President Donald Trump is doing the exact same thing.

The Saudi-funded LIV Golf League announced this week that its season-ending championship will not be held in Saudi Arabia after all, as had been originally planned. Instead, the event will be played at Trump National Doral, which is owned by the former president.

Now, there is nothing wrong with a private citizen making a buck. Well, in this case, because of where the money is coming from, there is a lot wrong with it, both ethically and morally just not legally. It ought to be, but it isnt.

And if the Saudis want to line Trumps pockets with their oil money, then they can do that. Just like some Chinese businessman can give Hunter Biden a diamond or a bunch of cash.

Again, its shady, but as long as they get nothing in return, its not illegal. In theory, the recipient of that largesse could even make a vague promise of putting in a good word with somebody who has the authority to make decisions. Because, once again, they are private citizens.

None of that would be good, whether its Hunter Biden earning large sums of money for consulting services or Jared Kushner being handed $2 billion by the same Saudis.

But things change if the beneficiary of that foreign government money holds an actual position of power, say, for example, undersecretary of agriculture for food, nutrition, and consumer services.

Or president of the United States. That would be a biggie.

And that is what we are dealing with here.

In a world in which ethics matter, it would be unfathomable for the government-controlled Saudi Public Investment Fund to be...
