I rest my case.

Wait, what?

Meet the kipunji: A rare primate success story in Tanzania "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

In January 2003, when Wildlife Conservation Society researchers working in Tanzanias Southern Highlands heard from local hunters that there was a monkey called the kipunji living on the slopes of Mount Rungwe, they didnt know what to think. They had never heard of the kipunji, but the local Wanyakyusa are storytellers, and the line between the real and mythical is often blurred. Then, in May that year, while doing biodiversity surveys in the Southern Highlands, the researchers caught their first glimpse of a strange primate. It took many months of trekking through the steep forested slopes on the heels of these elusive monkeys before they got a good look. Only then could they confirm that the kipunji with its light-brown tufted triangular crest, black face, a muzzle similar to a baboons, and a loud honking call was a species new to Western science. In a strange coincidence, in July 2004, researchers working in Tanzanias Udzungwa Mountains some 350 kilometers (220 miles) to the northeast, also discovered what they believed was a new primate. In 2005, the two teams jointly published a paper in the journal Science describing the new species. They initially dubbed it the highland mangabey (Lophocepus kipunji), but later, following genetic analysis of a dead specimen, they renamed it the kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji), putting it into its own genus, meaning it wasnt closely related to any other monkey. This made the kipunji the first new primate genus described in Africa in more than 80 years. KipunjiThis article was originally published on Mongabay

The Fake China Threat, Then and Now "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Joseph Solis-Mullen | The Libertarian Institute | July 5, 2023

Republicans are terrible on China. Examples abound, but perhaps the most instructive illustration of this long-term handicap comes from the following quotation:

We must be prepared to go it alone in China if our allies desert us. We must not fool ourselves into thinking we can avoid taking up arms with the Chinese Reds. If we dont fight them in China and Formosa [Taiwan] well be fighting them in San Francisco, in Seattle, in Kansas City.1

This wasnt excerpted from a recent speech by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK). Rather, it was by then-Senate Majority Leader William Knowland (R-CA), in the January 1954 edition of Colliers Magazine. While perhaps particularly rabid in his Sinophobia, President Dwight D. Eisenhower privately opined that Knowland has no foreign policy, except to develop high blood pressure whenever he mentions Red ChinaIn his case, there seems to be no final answer to the question, How stupid can you get?2 The parallels between Knowlands time and our own are significant. Representing the respective nadirs of Sino-American relations, they are worth considering in depth.

First, a necessary bit of high-level background.

In 1949 Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party defeated the nominally republican forces of Chiang Kai-shek. Despite internal warnings that this was likely to happen, Chiang and his nationalist cronies being thieves, every last one of themcorrupt as they come according to President Harry Truman, this kicked off a firestorm in Washington3. Who lost China? subsequently became a driving force of the Second Red Scare that consumed American politics, distorting perceptions and constraining the ability of even the most powerful figures, such as Eisenhower or Secretary of State Dean Acheson, to act towards China in the more rational manner they would have liked.

Dean Acheson had presciently forecast as early as 1950 that Mao could be an Asian Tito, a disruptor of communist unity akin to the Yugoslav leader, Josip Broz Tito, Stalins bte noire. As...

Effort to save rare Colombian monkey looks to crowdfund its conservation "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

For 38 years, Colombian-based NGO Fundacin Proyecto Tit has successfully run a reforestation program to protect the critically endangered cotton-top tamarin and its tropical dry forest habitat in northwestern Colombia. Using rigorous science-based reforestation methods, the program has helped create four protected areas that cover some 5,100 hectares (12,600 acres). During this time, Proyecto Tit has planted more than 120,000 native trees across nearly 570 hectares (1,400 acres) to secure more habitat for cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and other native wildlife to thrive. At the end of this year, the organization is planning to purchase an additional 386 hectares (954 acres) with the help of Silicon Valley-based ReWorld, an NGO that has committed to raising $1.2 million by October to support the organization. (Left) A farmer plants a tree sapling as part of Fundacin Proyecto Tits forest restoration efforts. Once purchased, the land will be used to create new habitat for about eight to 10 families of cotton-top tamarins, which are threatened by illegal logging and wildlife trafficking. 57 people died in encounters with elephants in last 3 months across the Indian state of Odisha - 50% increase over same the period in 2022 "IndyWatch Feed World"

Odisha has seen a 50% increase jump in human casualties in encounters with wild elephants in the first three months of 2023-24, with 57 deaths compared to 38 deaths in the same period last year. This year's April, May and June, when human-elephant encounters are typically at their peak with the pachyderms raiding mango, bael and jackfruit orchards, have been the most lethal in past 10 years. The quarter also saw a 26% rise in the number of human-elephant encounters, which resulted in more injuries than ever before. Asian elephants are attracted to food crops because they are more palatable, more nutritious and have lower secondary defences than wild plants, wildlife expert Biswajit Mohanty said. Crop damage by elephants is the root cause of human-elephant conflicts across states, he added.

Animatronic Alexa Gives Amazons Echo a Face "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A man next to a robot with animatronic eyes and a CRT display showing an audio waveform

Today, were surrounded by talking computers and clever AI systems that a few decades ago only existed in science fiction. But they definitely looked different back then: instead of a disembodied voice like ChatGPT, classic sci-fi movies typically featured robots that had something resembling a human body, with an actual face you could talk to. [Thomas] over at Workshop Nation thought this human touch was missing from his Amazon Echo, and therefore set out to give Alexa a face in a project he christened Alexatron.

The basic idea was to design a device that would somehow make the Echos voice visible and, at the same time, provide a pair of eyes that move in a lifelike manner. For the voice, [Thomas] decided to use the CRT from a small black-and-white TV. By hooking up the Echos audio signal to the TVs vertical deflection circuitry, he turned it into a rudimentary oscilloscope that shows Alexas waveform in real time. An acrylic enclosure shields the CRTs high voltage while keeping everything inside clearly visible.

To complete the face, [Thomas] made a pair of animatronic eyes according to...

Affirmative Action vs Fair Lending "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The term affirmative action was originally created by John F. Kennedy in 1961, in the context of the employment of government contractors. But affirmative action has been very unpopular in the US, and was backed into a corner until it came to only refer to university admissions. Prior to the recent Supreme Court decision against affirmative action, the idea was already only hanging by a thread.

Now that the thread has been cut, I encourage people to imagine other possibilities. Previously, we could only ever talk about affirmative action in elite universities, because that was the only politically viable option. Now, none of the options are politically viable, so we might as well talk about the possibilities we forgot.

What if we had affirmative action in hiring? Salaries? Political representation? Affirmative action tax breaks! If youre outside the US, help me out here, what sort of affirmative action do they have in your country?

Not saying these are good ideas, but I want people to imagine them. Because, frankly, there are way more radical ideas than optional affirmative action only in the context of university admissions, and only for universities that are selective enough for it to matter, only to increase diversity, not to address racial injustice, and only as part of a holistic evaluation without quotas.

And its the optional part that I want to focus on here.  Even without affirmative action, if Harvard really wanted it, they could increase diversity by getting rid of the 43% of White students admitted on non-merit-based grounds (athletes, donors, legacies, etc.). But obviously they wont do that, because relying on the good will of universities is and always has been weak policy.

In the spirit of imagining new possibilities, I would like to contrast with US fair lending policy, a subject I introduced in a recent post.  I distinguished between two kinds of discrimination: disparate treatment and disparate impact. Disparate treatment is the kind of discrimination we usually imagine, where people are treated differently because of their race/gender/etc. Disparate impact is the kind of discrimination where a policy that looks neutral on the surface has a different impact on different groups.

One way to describe affirmative action is: a policy where disparate treatment is used as a tool to offset disparate impact. For example, because Black people are systematically disadvantaged in their earlier education, they may perform worse in merit-based admissions. Or, in the case...

Asian NATO: another failed plan by Washington "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Viktor Mikhin New Eastern Outlook 05.07.2023

There are increasing reports in the world media that the US-led NATO military alliance is planning to expand into the Asia-Pacific region. The idea was originally introduced by US President Joe Biden at the East Asia Summit on October 27, 2021, where he said: We envision an Indo-Pacific region that is open, interconnected, prosperous, resilient and secure and we are ready to work together with each of you to achieve this. The White House later issued a report titled Indo-Pacific Strategy of the United States on February 11, 2022, outlining President Joe Bidens strategy to reestablish American leadership in the Indo-Pacific region.

Among the remarks in the so-called newsletter that stood out was the declared necessity for the US to strengthen ties with Asian countries in order to tackle the urgent task of competing with China. But, according to its authors, NATO, which was formed to defend Europe against a fabricated Soviet threat, is allegedly a peace-loving alliance. In reality, it has evolved into a militarily aggressive bloc with a dominant presence in the North Atlantic region. This peace-loving coalition has militarized the continent to the point where war has broken out in Europe for the first time since World War II.

The question arises, do the countries of the Asia-Pacific region want to see their region also heavily militarized under the strict guardianship not only of the United States, but also of European peace-loving NATO? Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of this peace-loving bloc, insists on increasing the military alliances activities in Asia, as he stated publicly earlier this year during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The peacemaker from Europe said: What happens in Asia matters for Europe and what happens in Europe matters for Asia, and therefore it is even more important that NATO Allies are strengthening our partnership with our Indo Pacific partners.

According to Japans Nikkei newspaper, NATO will establish a liaison office in Tokyo in 2024 and use it as a center for cooperation with Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Geographically, these four countries are close to China and other states in the region. It should be emphasized that they are all strategically placed in the Asia-Pacific region and have common interests with the US and NATO, or serve them faithfully.

It doesnt take a genius to figure out that their target in this situation is China. Speaking at a May 26 press briefing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson rightly noted that NATOs attempt to intervene in the Asia-Pacific region eastward would inevitably undermine regional peace and stability...

Jokowi focuses on El Nio as Indonesias dry season heats up "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has warned of potentially dangerous weather conditions accelerating across the archipelago in the coming months, as the nations meteorology agency says more than half the country has entered the dry season. Anticipate the potential for a long dry season due to El Nio, the president, known as Jokowi, told ministers at a cabinet meeting in Jakarta on July 3. Agencies across Indonesia are allocating resources and shifting policy to confront the risks posed by the emergence of the first El Nio since the Southeast Asian countrys 2015 haze crisis. That year, El Nio-driven warming of Pacific Ocean waters caused a cascade of climatic effects, which in Indonesia meant a prolonged main dry season beyond October. The dearth of rain strengthened the annual wildfires, which burned 4.6 million hectares (11.4 million acres) of land across the archipelago. Data from Indonesias Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed a total of 186 medium-risk hotspots across the country on July 2. The eastern regions of Papua and Maluku accounted for the largest share, with 62 hotspots, while the agency detected 38 hotspots across Sumatra and Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo. By comparison, on July 30, 2015, the last El Nio year, the BMKG recorded 186 hotspots just in Riau, a province in Sumatra home to Indonesias largest expanse of carbon-heavy peatland. In 2015, the city of Palangkaraya, the capital of Central Kalimantan province, experienced some of the worst air quality recorded in Indonesia as nearbyThis article was originally published on Mongabay

The "StackRot" kernel vulnerability "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Ruihan Li has disclosed a significant vulnerability introduced into the 6.1 kernel:

A flaw was found in the handling of stack expansion in the Linux kernel 6.1 through 6.4, aka "Stack Rot". The maple tree, responsible for managing virtual memory areas, can undergo node replacement without properly acquiring the MM write lock, leading to use-after-free issues. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to compromise the kernel and escalate their privileges.

As StackRot is a Linux kernel vulnerability found in the memory management subsystem, it affects almost all kernel configurations and requires minimal capabilities to trigger. However, it should be noted that maple nodes are freed using RCU callbacks, delaying the actual memory deallocation until after the RCU grace period. Consequently, exploiting this vulnerability is considered challenging.

The disclosure contains a detailed description of the problem. Fixes have been merged into the mainline and the 6.4.1, 6.3.11, and 6.1.37 stable kernel updates.

Kiev attacks Russian airport with possible Western help "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Lucas Leiroz | July 5, 2023

Kiev continues to promote terrorist maneuvers against civilian targets in the undisputed territory of the Russian Federation. On July 4, Moscow was the target of a new Ukrainian incursion with military drones hitting a major local airport. Russian forces were able to neutralize the terrorist threat in time to avoid disaster, however, there is evidence that Kiev received Western support to carry out the operation, which seriously increases the chances of escalation in the conflict.

On July 4, Ukraine launched an attack with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow. Five Ukrainian drones reached the area of the airport but were neutralized without causing damage. Four UAVs were shot down by Russian anti-aircraft defense and one was diverted by techniques of electronic warfare.

The airports activities were suspended for a few hours in the morning due to security restrictions, but they were quickly resumed after the destruction of enemy UAVs, having virtually no impact in the flights schedule. It was reported by the authorities that the downed drones would have dropped in the regions of Kubinka, Valuyevo and Krivosheevo.

The raid was considered a terrorist action by Russian officials. Spokesmen for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also pointed out that the complex nature of the operation makes clear the existence of Western aid. The US and other NATO members have not only provided Kiev with UAVs, but also extensive training in the use of these equipment, as well as intelligence information about the targets of the attacks and satellite images, which have facilitated the regimes terrorist plans. For this reason, Russia considered NATO complicit in the July 4 attack.

Kiev, however, denied having any role in the incident. Indeed, denying responsibility in terrorist attacks has already become a common practice of the regime. Kievs modus operandi is to deny involvement immediately after cases and sometime later to make public statements that suggest responsibility. This was what happened, for example, in the case of the murder of Daria Dugina, in August 2022. At the time, Kiev denied involvement in the death, but months later the Ukrainian military intelligence chief General Kirill Budanov stated that his units would keep killing Russians anywhere on the fac...

Remote Driving Controversial in UK, But Its Already Here "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The automotive industry is rushing towards autonomous vehicles as a futuristic ideal. They havent got the autonomous part sorted just yet. However, as part of this push, the technology to drive vehicles remotely via video link has become mature.

In the United Kingdom, there has been great controversy on whether this should be allowed, particularly for vehicles piloted by individuals outside the countrys borders. That came to a head with a Law Commission repot published earlier this year, but since then, innovative companies have continued to work on remote driving regardless. Complicity in Hate: Israeli Government Boycotts Conference on Attacks Against Christians "IndyWatch Feed World"

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon denounced a conference organized by the Israeli Open University to discuss the increasing violence on Christians and Christian sites in Palestine. These attacks, carried out mostly by Anti-Chrisitan Zionist hate groups, have increased at an alarming pace. Close to twenty incidents were registered between the end of 2022 and June of 2023.

High-level clergy in Jerusalem have blamed, at least in part, the far-right government, which includes ultranationalist ministers, for the growing wave of attacks. Nikodemus Schnabel, who presides over the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition in Jerusalem, told the German newspaper Sddeutsche Zeitung that attacks against Christians have increased because those who hate Christians now sit in the government. He was right.

Fundraiser

The conference, sponsored and organized by the Center for the Study of Relations Between Jews, Christians and Muslims at the Open University of Israel and carrying the bizarre name, Why do (some) Jews spit on Goyim, was held in June 2023 in Jerusalem. The conference was supposed to take place at the King David Tower museum, but due to pressure from the Mayors office and the harsh criticism by Israels Chief Rabbi, Shlomo Amram, it had to be moved to another location.

The King David Tower museum sits in the citadel at the Old City of Jerusalem entrance, overlooking Jaffa Gate. The tower and the museum have nothing to do with King David, but the name and the museum are part of the Zionist propaganda machine that desperately tries to give historical legitimacy to the existence of the settler colonial project known as Israel.

Israeli officials refused to participate

According to a report in Axios, the Israeli Foreign Ministry decided to boycott the conference in Jerusalem that will focus on the growing wave of attacks by Jewish Israelis against Christians in Jerusalem. Yisca Harani, one of Israels leading experts on Christianity, organized the conference. I got a call from a Foreign Ministry official who said that the name of the conference is inappropriate and, therefore, they are not going to attend, she said.

There can be no surprise here. Israeli government officials, members of the Jerusalem municipality, and the Netanyahu government are themselves leading the hate groups and encouraging them to act.

Earlier this year, dozens of Israe...

I Hope To God I Am Wrong: Climate Change Going Through The Roof "IndyWatch Feed War"

Why are we at Media Lens utterly terrified by climate collapse while other people we know are mildly concerned, blithely indifferent or cockily contrarian?

The simple answer is that we are doing this full-time and doing this includes reading the unfiltered reports and thoughts of top climate scientists on social media all day, every day.

Whenever we take a break from social media, the tendrils of the corporate body-snatchers again start to insinuate themselves. We are soothed by entertainment, by infotainment, by presstitute prestidigitation normalising the unthinkable. Despite a mountain of evidence, we are assured that the crisis is under the management of fundamentally decent, rational leaders. Yes, dear reader, our sense of crisis also abates.

There are two key responses to news of the latest climate disasters:

Its bad, but not that bad. Its manageable and we can carry on pretty much as normal.

An alternative take:

No, it is that bad. This is just the ball starting to roll it will gather more and more and more momentum, and it wont stop. We need drastic change now!

The second of these is inarguably correct. The first is the underlying message delivered by state-corporate media that have an existential vested interest in the status quo, in discouraging us from seeking serious change. And this is exactly why the level of public alarm does not yet reflect the terrifying, rollercoaster reality depicted in the soaring and crashing graphs measuring temperatures and ice coverage.

Professor Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London, tweeted last month:

I hope to God I am wrong, but to me, it is looking increasingly as if we have reached some sort of tipping point, with the global temperature, sea-surface temperature, ice loss, and other parameters, all going through the roof.

McGuire was responding to reports...

The myth of multitasking "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(I came across this old post of mine from back in 2011 that I thought might be of interest to those who had not seen it.)

Since I work at a university and am around young adults all the time, I have long been aware that young people today are avid consumers of multimedia, who are adept at emailing, texting, listening to mp3 players, surfing the web, checking up on Facebook, etc. It seems like they are quite proficient at multitasking.

I have always been a poor multitasker. I cannot read or do any work that requires serious thinking if I can hear conversation or loud noises in the background. I have found that I cannot even listen to music in the background when reading. But I know people who seem to thrive on that kind of ambient sound and even deliberately go to coffee shops to do work such as grading papers or writing, things that would be impossible for me.

I had thought that my lack of ability to multitask was partly due to being old and not acquiring these skills while young, similar to my slow reaction time when playing video games (which results in being destroyed when playing them with my children) and my inability to manipulate my thumbs dexterously enough to use the small keys on cell phones without making numerous mistakes.

I thought my poor multitasking skills may also be due to a cognitive disability, similar to the one that prevents me from ever seeing the hidden 3-D images in those so-called autostereogram (Magic Eye) pictures that were such a rage a few years ago. The Sunday papers used to have one and my daughters would look briefly at it and say, Oh, look at the dolphins or whatever it was that day whereas, despite my strenuous efforts at staring using all the recommended tricks, all I saw were colored dots and wiggly lines. I later learned that some people never see the hidden image, due to some feature of their visual-cognitive brain function. It was not reassuring to discover that I have a defective brain, and that there is no warranty.

But a study by Stanford researchers Eyal Ophira, Clifford Nass, and Anthony D. Wagner titled Cognitive control in media multitaskers and published in 2009 the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences seems to indicate that hardly anyone can really multitask and they are only deluding themselves that they can.

In an interview with the PBS program Frontline, lead researcher Clifford Nass said that it is possible to multitask certain things if those require different parts of the brain. For example, one might be able to cook and keep an eye on the children, or do gardening while listening to music or drive while talking. But classical psychology says that when it comes to doing more than one...

Blame food prices for France's riots "IndyWatch Feed World"

Energy sanctions over Ukraine are leading to soaring costs. In the spring of 1775 a wave of riots, approximately 300 in total, engulfed the Kingdom of France. The protests did not subside until the army had been deployed and hundreds of rioters arrested. These events became known as the "Flour War" because the riots were precipitated by a sharp increase in grain prices, which were then passed on to French consumers in the form of higher food prices. While the Flour War seems like ancient history, it may well have something to tell us about the riots taking place in France over the last few days. Of course, the immediate cause of this unrest was the shooting of a teenager by police. Yet it follows on from smaller riots this year, first in response to President Emmanuel Macron's pension reforms, and then to the building of reservoirs in the west of the country.

Lorie Smith is a liar "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I knew the Supreme Court was corrupt, but they arent even trying to hide it anymore. Their recent decision to allow businesses to discriminate against gay people was a total sham, in violation of basic principles even I, a legal ignoramus, recognize as baseless.

But what makes this clown show even worse is that the complaint at the heart of 303 Creative v. Elenis is completely made up. In Masterpiece, there really was a baker who really did discriminate against a gay couple, creating both standing and a fact pattern to discuss in court. With 303 Creative, however, the facts justifying the case are all make-believe. The plaintiff, Lorie Smith, sued on the grounds that she doesnt want to make wedding websites for same-sex couples. But no one had actually requested that she do so, for one simple reason: She didnt make wedding websites. Her lawsuit was purely hypothetical. Legally, she shouldnt have had a right to sue at all.

To get around the fact that their client had no right to sue, ADF claimed she had received an inquiry from a man named Stewart who had some vague questions about maybe hiring 303 Creative in the future for a wedding to Mike. But it appears that the entire story may be fabricated. Melissa Gira Grant of the New Republic contacted Stewart, using the email and phone number included in the lawsuit. He denies having sent that request, pointing out that he is already married, to a woman.

Who needs facts anymore? Just make up any ol story you want, demand justice, and this Supreme Court will invent an excuse for you, as long as it aligns with their biases. I wasnt surprised to learn that this particular decision was authored by Gorsuch, who is always happy to lie to promote his religious agenda.

This isnt even the first opinion Gorsuch has written based on made-up facts. Last term, Gorsuch ruled in favor of a football coach who wanted to lead prayers at a public high school, in direct violation of the First Amendment. To get to the desired outcome, both Gorsuch flat-out lied about the situation. Gorsuch claims the coach merely offered his prayers quietly while his students were otherwise occupied. That, and this cannot be stated firmly enough, is a lie. As Sotomayor noted in her dissent, the coach actually held showy prayers at the 50-yard line during games. He made such a spectacle that [m]embers of the public rushed the field to join Kennedy, jumping fences to access the field and knocking over student band members. She even included helpful pictures, which is unusual in...

The Problem with Environmentalism, and Why a Recession is Definitely Coming, with Second Thoughts JT Chapman "IndyWatch Feed World"

It aint easy being a YouTuberat least, not a political one. The platform is a giant, Byzantine organization filled with secret rules and algorithms that content creators constantly fall afoul of. This is especially true for radical voices, who are incessantly shadowbanned and suppressed by the Google-owned platform.

One person who has broken through the algorithmic barriers better than almost anyone is JT Chapman, host of the Second Thought channel. Chapman makes engaging video essays about some of the most pressing issues of the day, and the quality of his work has drawn 1.6 million subscribers to his main channel. He is also the founder of the YouTube news show First Thought and the co-host of The Deprogram podcast. Today, he discusses his tips for YouTube success, climate change, the economy, and what radicals could learn from Walmart.

Having one of the worlds largest corporations (Google) own the global town square poses huge problems for freedom of speech, not least because of the companys intimate links to the Central Intelligence Agency. Chapman has to tread a careful line on YouTube because of demonetization, age restriction, and other tactics the platform uses to suppress radical voices. All this, he says, really disincentivizes people like me to produce radical content. This leads many well-meaning YouTubers to just start chasing the algorithm and become toxic little clout goblins, he told MintCast host Alan MacLeod.

When asked how useful YouTube is for inspiring people and producing societal change, Chapman said,

I think investigative journalism that exposes corruption is useful in moving the needlebut on the other hand, Id say that a large percentage of people doing what I do on platforms like YouTube really arent all that useful, unless we are actively driving people to get engaged in organizations and on the ground movements.

Chapman makes videos on a wide range of important topics. Today, he was asked about his most recent one, Green Energy Is Cheaper So Why Arent We Using It? and why the climate movement has failed to fully grasp the fundamental incompatibility of capitalism and a healthy future planet. He suggested that the problem was co-option, stating:

Russia is jamming HIMARS rockets Ukraines defense chief "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | July 5, 2023

Russia has found a way to interfere with GPS-guided artillery rounds, including munitions for US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, Defense Minister of Ukraine Aleksey Reznikov has claimed.

When those systems first arrived on Ukrainian battlefields last year they were highly accurate, Reznikov recalled, in an interview with the Financial Times on Wednesday.

However, Russia, which has strong radio-electronic systems, eventually found a way to jam GPS-guided artillery and HIMARS projectiles, he acknowledged.

Its like a constant pendulum. This is a war of technology, the minister said, describing the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow.

The Russians come up with a countermeasure, we inform our partners and they make a new countermeasure against this countermeasure, he explained.

Reznikov reiterated Kievs earlier claim that for the military industry of the world, you cant invent a better testing ground than Ukraine.

Kievs Western backers can actually see if their weapons work, how efficiently they work and if they need to be upgraded, he said.

Ukraine has been supplied with several dozen High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which have a range of 85 kilometers (53 miles), by its foreign backer since June last year. Western outlets described the system as a game-changer in the conflict.

In May, CNN reported, citing five sources from the US, Britain and Ukraine, that the US-designed multiple rocket launchers had been rendered increasingly less effective from the intensive blocking by the Russian forces. The electronic jammers throw off the GPS-guided targeting system of HIMARS rockets to cause them to miss their targets, the channel said.

Throughout the conflict, the Russian Defense Ministry reported destroying dozens of HIMARS systems through the use of kamikaze drones and artillery fire. However, these claims have been disputed by Kiev and Washington.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that deliveries of more sophisticated weapons to Ukraine by the US and its allies could cross its red lines and lead to a major escalation of hostilities. According to the Russian side, the supply of arms, intelligence sharing and training to Kievs troops already means that Western nations are de facto parties to the conflict.

Solar maximum could hit us harder and sooner than we thought "IndyWatch Feed World"

From a distance, the sun may seem calm and steady. But zoom in, and our home star is actually in a perpetual state of flux, transforming over time from a uniform sea of fire to a chaotic jumble of warped plasma and back again in a recurring cycle. Every 11 years or so, the sun's magnetic field gets tangled up like a ball of tightly wound rubber bands until it eventually snaps and completely flips turning the north pole into the south pole and vice versa. In the lead-up to this gargantuan reversal, the sun amps up its activity: belching out fiery blobs of plasma, growing dark planet-size spots and emitting streams of powerful radiation. Comment: New research shows that two solar cycles occur at the same time, lasting 17 years each. This period of increased activity, known as solar maximum, is also a potentially perilous time for Earth, which gets bombarded by solar storms that can disrupt communications, damage power infrastructure, harm some living creatures (including...

Kiev regime forces under increased pressure to step up counteroffensive days ahead of NATO summit "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | July 5, 2023

As if the situation for the Kiev regime forces wasnt bad already, the political West has now increased its already massive pressure on Kiev to perform better during the much-touted counteroffensive against the Russian military. Considering the disastrous losses and no actual gains, this will be a virtually impossible task for the already battered Neo-Nazi junta troops. The political leadership (aka NATO puppets) in Kiev, including its frontman Volodymyr Zelensky, are now publicly showing signs of desperation and pleading with the Kiev regime forces to show results mere days ahead of the major NATO summit that is due to start in Lithuania on July 11.

The pressure comes amid stepped-up blackmail by Washington DC which is now threatening that it will slow down or even cut so-called military aid to the Neo-Nazi junta in case its forces dont demonstrate theyre capable of advancing, taking and holding Russian positions. Zelensky held talks with several journalists and mainstream propaganda machine outlets over the weekend in an attempt to quell rumors about the failure of the counteroffensive. Indeed, even Western propaganda couldnt ignore the disastrous way these counteroffensive operations have been conducted, as ample evidence of horrendous losses on alternative platforms (particularly Telegram) simply cannot be ignored.

Still, Zelensky effectively accused the mainstream propaganda machine (the same one that has been lionizing him for about a year and a half now) of spreading Russian disinformation about the results of the counteroffensive. Yet, its not really clear where the supposed disinformation comes from, considering the actual state of the Kiev regime forces, particularly in the past several days. Indeed, numerous headlines in nearly all countries of the political West have relayed the increasingly gloomy prospects of the counteroffensive, with many now suggesting it might be failing. This is a major hurdle for the Neo-Nazi juntas attempts to hide its massive losses.

As the political Wests favorite puppets are trying to keep their unsustainable narrative alive, Zelensky is doing anything he can to help with this increasingly futile effort. He now even claims that torrential rains had slowed down some processes quite a bit, but admits that the reality still is that every kilometer of liberated territory and gains cost...

Mormonism is declining "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Good. Can they die a little faster, please?

I always felt that living in Utah was like living in a nest of Scientologists all this money-making scheming plastered over with a veneer of florid scripture written by a mountebank. I wouldnt miss it if it disappeared altogether.

Thats nothing special about Mormonism, though. Look! All religions in the USA are dying slowly.

There are many factors behind this decline. Heres one:

Meanwhile, the churchs close alliance with the GOP might be costing it members. As Notre Dame political science professor David Campbell, who was raised Mormon, told me, Theres an allergic reaction among many Americans particularly those who lean to the left politically when religion and politics mix. We see it among Catholics. We see it among evangelicals. And were seeing it among Mormons.

It gets messy when you include politics, though: the Republicans have become increasingly cult-like. Thats the next religion that needs to go!

Imperialist Red Herring? NATO Expansion and the Ukraine war "IndyWatch Feed War"

In the months preceding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the topic of the increase in the number of European members of NATO received renewed attention among scholars of international relations. While a number of political realists have criticized the West for not taking sufficient measures to placate Russia due to supposedly adopting tone-deaf policies and failing to heed a purported warning pertaining to the military alliances continued eastward enlargement, which was issued by Putin in his 2007 speech at the Munich Security Conference, the actions undertaken and statements made by Russian officials since the start of the war have actually given further credence to the arguments of those experts on Russia, such as American historians Alexander Motyl and Timothy Snyder, who contend that the issue of NATO expansion is hardly tied to any legitimate Russian security concerns and largely constitutes a convenient red herring intended to justify other aims (quite likely inherently imperial in nature) that are to be achieved as a result of the war.

If we are to, as a starting point, briefly delve into the background when it comes to internal Ukrainian political dynamics in the late 2010s, it would be difficult to speak of a paradigm shift regarding Ukrainian approach to NATO membership after the inauguration of Volodymyr Zelenskyy in May 2019, which would have altered the international security landscape from the Russian perspective. Zelenskyy very much continued in his predecessor Petro Poroshenkos footsteps, reiterating the latters commitment to put the issue to a referendum, so that Ukrainian citizens could make their own decision. One of the more decisive steps on the domestic scene that paved the way for Ukraines potential accession had in fact been taken in February 2019, three years prior to the invasion, at a time when Poroshenko (perceived to be more hardline than Zelenskyy in his attitude toward Russia) was still president the Verkhovna  Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) approved an amendment to the constitution that established membership in NATO and the European Union as strategic goals for Ukraine.

When examining the events after February 2022, one of the first m...

Delta South: Witness Tells  Election Tribunal How Coalition Officer Cancelled Result Of  Warri South "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

JUDICIARY 3

LAGOS JULY 5TH (URHOBTODAY)-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta South Senatorial District, Julius Takeme on Tuesday narrated how the collation officer for the February 25 senatorial election cancelled the result for Warri South Local Government Area.

Takeme who mounted the witness for the petitioners, told the three-member tribunal sitting in Asaba that the result was abruptly cancelled after the said collation officer received a call.

In the said petition, candidate of the PDP, Michael Diden is challenging the victory of Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Relying on his witness statement on oath, Mr. Takeme said he was the agent of his party at the senatorial collation level, noting that he voted in Burutu before moving to Warri South and Isoko to monitor the election.

While being cross examined by counsel to the second respondent, Robert Emukperuo, Takeme stated that he was deprived of signing the result of the disputed election at the senatorial collation centre in Oleh.

For Warri South which is the most contentious local government during the election, Takeme said the exercise was conducted peacefully, adding that there was no dispute.

There was no dispute until the collation officer went out to receive a call, and came back, drew a line on top of ward 06 in the presence of security agents and the parties.

When he was asked why, he said he got a superior call from above to cancel it, and that since he had already recorded the scores for the parties, he had to draw the line over it, he stated.

When confronted with exhibit 51 which showed that all the parties scored zero votes for Warri South, indicating that it was cancelled at the local government level, the witness said the recording of zero votes for the parties was an after thought, insisting that the unit results were already uploaded on the IReV.

For the cancellation of Bowen Ward 06 of Warri South where PDP scored 6,675 votes, Takeme faulted INEC for the seeming under accreditation of voters as recorded on the BVAS machine and ticked on the manual voter register.

Whereas BVAS recorded 813 as accredited voters, only 28 names were ticked on the manual voter...

Unequal Protection in a White Supremacist Police State "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

While I havent been great about consistently covering the movement to stop cop city (I failed to cover their recent week of action, for example), I think Ive covered it enough that my regular readers have at least an idea of the general dynamic there. Basically, the police and a number of corporations want to build a huge playground/training facility for cops to practice urban warfare, among other things. The people dont want it,  and the cost to the city keeps rising, but the cops and their backers are committed to forcing it through, over the bodies of protesters, if necessary.

This morning, my attention was drawn to a very telling juxtaposition, and I wanted to share it with all of you. Police have arrested a wide array of people involved in the movement to stop cop city, from old ladies holding signs at Home Depot, to people legally organizing a bail fund for fellow activists. This is far from the first time weve seen police violate civil rights, including the right to freedom of speech violating rights is honestly something of a hobby for them. Tell me why, then, Atlanta cops suddenly found a deep respect for the first amendment when it came to Nazis, holding Nazi flags, outside of a fucking synagogue during Sabbath prayer?

Cash or Card? Consumers Pay Strategically to Forget Guilty Purchases "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Cash or card? Consumers pay strategically to forget guilty purchases, study shows:

"Will you be paying with cash or card?"

It's a question that's been asked of consumers for decades. And despite the increasing popularity of digital payment methods, cash and card remain the most popular choices worldwide. In 2021, 65 percent of all point-of-sale transactions globally were made using cash or card, according to Fidelity National Information Services.

Past research shows that 90 percent of households use multiple payment methods, but new research from the University of Notre Dame takes a first look into how consumers choose between them. The study finds that the justifiability of a purchase affects how consumers choose to pay.

[...] "When a purchase is difficult to justify like buying an overpriced bottle of water at the airport, cigarettes or candy consumers pay with less-trackable methods, like cash, so they can eliminate the paper or electronic trail and 'forget' this guilty purchase," said Bechler, who specializes in consumer behavior and social psychology with an emphasis on attitudes, persuasion and financial decision-making. "When a purchase is easy to justify, consumers have no problem paying with trackable methods like credit cards that create paper or electronic trails."

Despite the vast amount of research on financial decision-making in behavioral economics, consumer behavior and social psychology, this is the first study to take an in-depth look at how consumers choose to pay.

On Retrieving Dyson "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

On Retrieving Dyson

One of the pleasures of writing and editing Centauri Dreams is connecting with people Ive been writing about. A case in point is my recent article on Freeman Dysons Gravitational Machines paper, which has only lately again come to light thanks to the indefatigable efforts of David Derbes (University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, now retired). See Freeman Dysons Gravitational Machines for more, as well as the follow-up, Building the Gravitational Machine. I was delighted to begin an email exchange with Dr. Derbes following the Centauri Dreams articles, out of which emerges todays post, which presents elements of that exchange.

I run this particularly because of my continued fascination with the work and personality of Freeman Dyson, who is one of those rare individuals who seems to grow in stature every time I read or hear about his contributions to physics. It was fascinating to receive from Dr. Derbes not only the background on how this manuscript hunter goes about his craft, thereby illuminating some of the more hidden corners of physics history, but also to learn of his recollections of the interactions between Dyson and Peter Higgs, whose Higgs mechanism has revolutionized our understanding of mass and contributed a key factor to the Standard Model of particle physics. Im also pleased to make the acquaintance of a kindred spirit, who shares my fascination with how todays physics came to be, and the great figures who shaped its growth.

by David Derbes

I have a lifelong interest in the history of physics, particularly the history of physicists. Somehow I got through graduate school (in the UK; but Im American) with only a very shaky acquaintance with Feynman diagrams and calculations in QED [quantum electrodynamics, the relativistic quantum theory of electrically charged particles, mutually interacting by exchange of photons]. This led me to a program of self-study (resulting in Feynmans derivation of the Schrdiinger equation, Amer. Jour. Phys. 64 (1996) 881-884, two editions of Dysons AQM [Advanced Quantum Mechanics], and, with Richard Sohn, David J. Griffiths, and a cast of thousands, Sidney Colemans Lectures on Quantum Field Theory).

Summary: Workforce of the EPO is up in arms over so-called reforms that feel like deliberate punishment that curtails actual work, reduces productivity, and results in much worse quality of work

THE STAFF of the EPO has long pointed out that Benot Battistelli made the EPO a far less attractive workplace like it was his actual objective to do so. Antnio Campinos, a French friend of Battistelli (for well over a decade), is just doing the same thing. Days ago, July 1st, marked 5 years or one term since one saboteur passed the baton to the next saboteur. This second saboteur even bribed all the voters to give him another 5 years in charge. Corruption has become the normal. Crime is to be expected. Look no further than what the European Union did only days ago regarding the Unified Patent Court. This isnt a legal system but an illegal system, which is being shoehorned with help from bribed media (like JUVE) and infiltrated publishers.

The video above mostly focuses on the many different ways in which the workplace got worse. We plan to publish a lot more about the EPO until the end of this week.

They are composed of a rotating column of air, which makes them visually impressive. Last September, the formation of one was reported in the Avils de Cumanayagua dam , Cienfuegos. A Faulty Keyboard From a Single LED "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

When the chance arrived to buy a mechanical keyboard for not a lot, naturally, [Hales] jumped at it. Then it started having odd intermittent problems with some keys appearing stuck, which led to a teardown and some fault finding. The culprit was a white LED but why this was the case is a fascinating story.

Stripping it down there didnt seem to be an obvious culprit, but eventually, the trail led to a lack of diodes in the matrix. This keyboard had an extremely clever yet rather cursed design in which it used LEDs as both illumination and as a diode in the keyboard matrix circuit, and the faulty LED had a reverse breakdown condition that could be triggered under certain operational conditions.

More unexpectedly, it would sometimes hold on to its reverse breakdown state even after power off. Just when you think you understand a components properties, theres always room for surprise. And we can safely say weve learned something about the design of cheaper keyboards in reading the account. Its clear that when it comes to boards, its best to take no chances.

Ukraine Preparing For Nuclear Explosion As Russia Reduces Zaporizhzhia Plant Presence "IndyWatch Feed War"

Recent Ukrainian response drills

Tyler Durden SUMMIT News July 5, 2023

Ukraines President Zelensky has once again been warning the public and the West that Russia is planning to stage some kind of disastrous nuclear fallout event centered on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europes largest. The claims from Ukrainian top officials have been persisting for weeks at this point, but have grown louder in the last several days, as Americans are busy with July 4th festivities.

There is a serious threat because Russia is technically ready to provoke a local explosion at the station, which could lead to a [radiation] release, Zelensky claimed days ago at a joint news conference in Kyiv. Ukrainian intelligence is at the same time this week saying Russias military is reducing its presence there and has told staff to relocate to Crimea.

The Guardian on Saturday cited Ukraines intelligence arm, the GUR, to say that several representatives of Russias state nuclear energy agency, Rosatom, have already left and further that Ukrainian employees who stayed at the plant and signed contracts with Rosatom had been told to evacuate by Monday, preferably to Crimea, it said.

All of this is of course impossible to confirm, and such allegations centered on Zaporizhzhia have been consistent throughout much of the war, at times coming from both sides.

On Thursday Ukraine conducted nuclear disaster response drills in the vicinity of the power station, regional officials said, The Guardian wrote further.

The Kremlin has expressly denied the Ukrainian allegations:

Russias UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, replied saying that he had written to the UN security council and secretary general, Antnio Guterres, to state: We do not intend to blow up this NPP [nuclear power plant], we have no intention of doing so.

All this has resulted in heightened international scrutiny over operations at the plant. Ukraine says the world is watching.

Ethiopian migrant workers are being systematically targeted and killed on a daily basis by Saudi security officials trying to deter people from crossing the Saudi-Yemen border.

According to a new report published today by the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC), an international network carrying out research and analysis on migration, the Ethiopians have been targeted by snipers and mortars.

Bram Frouws, the director of MMC, says the situation is ongoing and critical.

"Sexual abuse, including rape, is widespread," he told Middle East Eye.

"There is physical violence, torture, arbitrary detention - all speak of being shot at, with people dying around them at the northern border between Saudi Arabia and Yemen."

The Saudi-Yemen border has become particularly dangerous in recent years, with around 430 deaths and 650 injuries recorded between 1 January and 30 April 2022.

While so much energy is being expended over identity issues in the Assemblys absence (e.g.  The Brits dont love us anymore. Please!)   remarkably little attention seems to be paid to actual politics which is proceeding largely without regard to the local politicians.

The UK government in the person of Chris Heaton-Harris is free the play games or play for real, whichever he chooses.

The UU leaning Malone House Group has just pointed out that the Legacy Bill providing for virtual amnesty is expected to pass into law later this month, in the teeth of opposition from the local parties, the Irish government and human rights groups. The groups main concern was to remove what they regarded as the inbuilt bias against the security forces in a process that retained more evidence against them than the paramilitaries.

In another example

Heaton-Harris, the Northern Secretary, has updated the curriculum by Westminster regulation, in Stormonts absence. Pupils aged 11-16 must now be taught about access to contraception and abortion, although whether schools deign to do so is another matter.

Not everyone is in the mood for a debate. Bishop Donal McKeown, chair of the Catholic Council for Maintained Schools, said anyone who needed information on abortion could Google it.

But the DUP has thrown itself into the spirit of the occasion, accusing Heaton-Harris of seeking to promote abortion to children and young people based on his interpretation of scientifically accurate education.

This follows the precedent of Westminster enforcing the abortion regulations obstructed by the sitting Stormont.

Nobody has a clue whether CHH has in mind a sweetener of a billion quid for a return to Stormont, a situation everybody seems to regard as todays normal.

Behind that of course lies the games playing over the DUP s terms. The rational approach is put forward by the former civil servant Andrew McCormick who has already written a searing account of the governments handling of Brexit with special reference to Northern Ireland. The government should come clean. What, Andrew? You must be kidding!

NI has been stuck in limbo with the DUP asking for something the Government cannot deliver, and the Government appearing to promise to meet their concerns, despite knowing they cannot.

The Northern Ireland Office has allowed this stalemate to continue, despite the real-world consequences: no Executive, deteriorating public services and worsening public finances, all shaking trust in the governing.....

The Intersection in Front of My Kids School Was a Tragedy Waiting To Happen. Then It Did. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In January 2022, a tragic event directly in front of my childrens elementary school incited a deep resolve within me and many others in my community. A mother, awaiting her daughter, was killed while standing on the curb, the victim of a violent crash caused by a red-light runner. This incident sparked a new direction in my life's journey as a community advocate, instigating a commitment to make this legacy arterial road safer for its most vulnerable users.

This story unfolds around Phoebe Hearst Elementary in Sacramento, California. A multi-year recipient of the California Distinguished School Award from the California Department of Education, this highly coveted learning institution attracts parents citywide who submit their children to placement testing and a lottery for enrollment. Unique in our district, Phoebe Hearst is a 100% open enrollment elementary school, drawing students from all across the city to its campus each day.

Situated amidst residential, commercial, and educational corridors, the school was initially constructed in 1959, with then-Highway 50 bordering its southern edge. In 1970, the interstate was widened and realigned 1,500 feet south. This realignment left a large eastwest stroad cutting through many communities, creating conditions for unsafe speeding through several neighborhoods and commercial corridors, including around Phoebe Hearst.

Highway 50 realignment as represented by the dotted line. Previously, Folsom Boulevard to the north served as the highway.

Over the past few decades, the city of Sacramento began acknowledging the challenges created by this high-speed stroad, an artifact from a bygone era designed for a different purpose....

NoName(057)16s DDoSia Projects gets an upgrade "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The DDoSia attack tool received an upgrade, it supports a new security mechanism to conceal the list of targets.

Researchers at the cybersecurity firm Sekoia analyzed an updated variant of the DDoSia attack tool that was developed and used by the pro-Russia collective NoName(057)16.

The tool was employed in attacks against Ukraine and NATO countries, including the Eastern Flank (Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic and Latvia).

Other major targets of DDoS attacks powered with the tool are France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and other EU countries. These countries were targeted because they supported Ukraine both politically, militarily and economically since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

DDoSia relies on NoName057(16)s Telegram channels for communication, the hacker group used a channel in Russian, counting more than 45,000 subscribers, and a second in English.

Mississippi Says Poor Defendants Must Always Have a Lawyer. Few Courts Are Ready to Deliver. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and The Marshall Project. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

In April, the Mississippi Supreme Court changed the rules for state courts to require that poor criminal defendants have a lawyer throughout the sometimes lengthy period between arrest and indictment. The goal is to eliminate a gap during which no one is working on a defendants behalf.

That mandate went into effect Saturday. But few of the states courts have plans in place to change their procedures in a way that is likely to accomplish what the justices intended.

A survey of courts by the Daily Journal, ProPublica and The Marshall Project found that some local court officials are unaware of the new rule. Others have not decided how they will respond. Some officials suggested that their current practice of appointing lawyers only for limited purposes will fulfill the new requirement, even though those attorneys do little beyond attending early court hearings.

That reporting suggests that impoverished defendants in many Mississippi counties are likely to remain deprived of meaningful legal assistance as they wait, often in jail, for prosecutors to decide whether to pursue felony charges.

Theres really not a plan, said Chuck Hopkins, a judge in a county-level justice court in northeast Mississippis Lee County. He fears that if officials dont come up with one, the court could be hung out there waiting for a lawsuit to happen.

Andr de Gruy, who runs Mississippis Office of State Public Defender and is recognized throughout the state as an expert on indigent defense, said just four of the states 23 circuit court districts have asked him for advice on how to comply with the new rule. He responded by developing a model process they could use.

Judge Limits Govts Ability to Ask Social Media Companies to Remove Content "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Saying that the government is stifling free speech by working with the tech industry to remove misinformation and other content, a federal judge on Tuesday blocked several agencies and officials from communicating with social media companies.

At issue is a lawsuit brought by the Republican attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, who allege that the federal government illegally encouraged social media sites to censor content on topics ranging from vaccines, Hunter Bidens laptop, and false claims related to the 2020 election.

In a strongly worded 155-page decision, US District Judge Terry Doughty found that the plaintiffs were likely to prevail and therefore issued a preliminary injunction that prevents various agencies and officials from communicating with these companies.

Although this case is still relatively young, and at this stage the Court is only examining it in terms of Plaintiffs likelihood of success on the merits, the evidence produced thus far depicts an almost dystopian scenario, wrote Doughty. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a period perhaps best characterized by widespread doubt and uncertainty, the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian Ministry of Truth.

The decision is likely to impact the governments efforts to fight online misinformation not only that propagated by individuals and groups but also foreign countries.

In his decision, Doughty noted that much of the governments efforts focused on conservative issues, such as issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Big Lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 election.

The judge did not point out that there is an entire right-wing ecosystem built around spreading misinformation and an alternate reality.

Not that this would have made any difference, according to the ruling, because Doughty believes that the truth is something relative and every American has the God-given right to figure out what that is.

Each United States citizen has the right to decide for himself or herself what is true and what is false, Doughty wrote.

While the judge believes that the plaintiffs will prevail, it is not the government that is removing the information from social media sites. Instead, government officials are flagging content, an...

Copyright Troll On Route to File Record Number of Piracy Lawsuits This Year "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

troll signOver the past several years, adult entertainment company Strike 3 Holdings has filed thousands of cases in U.S. federal courts.

The company, known for its Blacked, Tushy, and Vixen brands, targets people whose Internet connections were allegedly used to download and share copyright-infringing content via BitTorrent.

Track, Sue and Settle

These efforts, often referred to as so-called copyright-trolling, are pretty straightforward. Copyright holders track down a pirating IP-address and then request a subpoena from the court, compelling ISPs to hand over the associated customer data.

Many of these lawsuits result in private settlements, which can be rather lucrative. With minimal effort, rightsholders can rake in hundreds or thousands of dollars per defendant.

Other rightsholders have deployed similar strategies over the years but Strike 3 is the only major player still involved today. That doesnt mean that the company is scaling down its business, quite the opposite in fact.

1,660 Lawsuits in 2023

Strike 3 has increased its enforcement efforts in 2023. Looking at the number of new lawsuits filed in the first six months of the year, we see that 1,660 complaints have been filed across various federal courts in the United States.

This figure is a 57% increase compared to the first half of 2022, suggesting that the adult company continues to increase its productivity. At the current rate, it will break the record number of piracy cases it filed last year.

A few of the 1,600 lawsuits

strike 2 cases

With this level of workload, its no surprise that most cases are resolved relatively swiftly. Of all lawsuits filed in the first half of the year, more than a third have already been closed. This typically happens when the parties reach an out-of-court settlement.

Strike 3 can also drop a complaint for other reasons and occasionally it obtains a default judgment due to a lack of response from a defendant. Rarely ever, do we see one of these cases go to trial.

Istanbul's governor has announced a ban on shisha smoking in public places, including parks and beaches.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Davut Gul said that the popular tobacco product would also be prohibited in forests and recreation areas.

"There is no restriction on licensed shisha lounges outside these areas," he added.

In recent years, shisha smoking in public areas has often been heavily associated in Turkey with Syrian refugees.

Although the governor - a government-appointed official - did not specify the reason for the new measures, a number of Twitter users interpreted the new restrictions as specifically addressing this phenomenon.

"Syrians will be upset," tweeted one user, along with a smiling face emoji, while another tweeted "We support restrictions bearing the traces of Arab culture."

The Colorado River Flooded Chemehuevi Land. Decades Later, the Tribe Still Struggles to Take Its Share of Water. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

At night, the lights of Lake Havasu Citys hotels, boat launches and neighborhoods reflect off the reservoir that gave this busy Arizona tourist town its name. The federal government dammed the Colorado River just downstream in the 1930s, providing the water and recreation opportunities that have allowed the community to flourish.

The opposite side of the reservoir is dark and so quiet that water lapping on the shore and bats clicking overhead can be heard over the distant hum of boat engines. This is the Chemehuevi Indian Tribes reservation in California. The water that rose behind Parker Dam to create Lake Havasu washed away homes and flooded about 7,000 acres of fertile Chemehuevi land, including where members grazed cattle.

The communities across the reservoir reflect the vast divide in economic opportunities between Indian Country and the rest of the West, which has been perpetuated, in large part, by who received water and who did not.

In 1908, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal government owed tribes enough water to develop a permanent home on their reservations and that their water rights would hold senior priority, meaning they trumped those of others. In the Colorado River Basin, most tribes, even in a drought, should get water before Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and elsewhere.

More than a century later, only a few basin tribes have benefited from this system. Of those that have, some live near federally funded canals and pipelines that can deliver water to their land, others received money to build their own water systems and some negotiated for the right to market their water to other users. The Gila River Indian Community, for instance, recentl...

Jordan's response to questions about the disappeared Turkish-Emirati dual national Khalaf al-Romaithi have only raised further queries, say the MP who posed the questions, Romaithi's lawyer and rights groups.

Romaithi, 58, was detained in Amman on 7 May after an iris scan at Queen Alia Airport revealed an Emirati warrant for his arrest. He was initially released on bail, but then later arrested by plainclothed police officers, and was due to have his case heard in court on 16 May.

After an initial court hearing on 9 May, Romaithi has not been seen by his lawyers and family.

A week later, Emirati state media reported that he had been "received" in the UAE. A Turkish official told interested parties that Romaithi was taken by a private plane to the UAE on 12 May.

But neither his exact whereabouts, nor how he ended up in the UAE have been clarified publicly by the UAE, Jordan or Turkey, who have remained silent on the topic - until the release this week of answers to parliamentary questions raised by Jordanian MP Adnan Mashuqa in May.

Cheap Ham Radio Improves the Low End UI If Not the RF "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

There was a time when buying a new radio was something many hams could never afford to do. Then came the super cheap and super controversial VHF and UHF radios from China. But as they say, you get what you pay for. The often oddly named handhelds like Baofeng and Wouxun are sometimes odd to work with and may have questionable RF outputs. A new radio has a less tongue-twisting English name and many improved features for about $50 the Talkpod A36Plus and [Josh] shows us how they work in a video that you can see below.

The new features are generally good. For example, the radio can pick up AM in the aircraft band, something most of these cheap radios wont do. It works on VHF and UHF bands but also picks up FM broadcasts. The USB-C connector is welcome, and the screen is large and colorful. It has 500 channels and IP5 water resistance.

There were a few issues, though. If you want to use it as a scanner, its not very fast. The radio comes with a programming cable, but apparently, it uses an odd USB chipset that may give you some driver issues. The biggest problem, though, is that it has, according to the video, excessive spurious emissions. The power isnt that high, and the antenna probably filters off some of it, too. But creating interference across the band isnt very polite.

How bad are the harmonics? Well, [Josh] hooks up a spectrum analyzer and also shows how a radio tuned to the second harmonic easily picks up th...

Ukraine war: Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns serious threat remains at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as Russia launches drone attack on Kyiv

Ukraine has previously said Russian troops mined the nuclear plant. While the UNs nuclear watchdog says its experts have so far found no visible indications of explosives at the plant, it says it needs additional access for further checks.

Olive Enokido-Lineham Sky News July 2, 2023

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine remains a serious threat.

Citing Ukrainian intelligence, the countrys president said Russia was technically ready to provoke a localised explosion at the facility.

Throughout the war nuclear experts have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of the Zaporizhzhia plant, which Russia seized control of last March, due to shelling near and around it.

Ukrainian military intelligence previously said Moscows troops had mined Europes largest nuclear plant and claimed on Friday that the number of Russian personnel is gradually being reduced.

Mr Zelenskyy said: There is a serious threat because Russia is technically ready to provoke a local explosion at the station, which could lead to a (radiation) release, in a news conference in Kyiv with Spains prime minister.

Dirty Bomb Attack Articles Have Already Been Written by British Press Blaming Russia "IndyWatch Feed War"

Martin Jay Strategic Review July 4, 2023

John Pilger was right. The killing fields of Ukraine are the setting of an even greater war, one of propaganda. It is quite extraordinary how so much of what we read in the UK press originates from a U.S.-funded propaganda bureau in Kiev so much so that it has become the norm for an event to be reported based on what President Zelensky just merely says.

The contrast and hypocrisy are stunning. Consider the moronic ramblings of CNN reporters from all over the world asked to take us through the events of the so-called attempted coup dtat. They were based in the U.S., London and of course Ukraine, in the case of the dim-witted Ben Wedeman. All of them in chorus talking of Putin on the edge or staring the abyss in the eye but not one of them able to say according to my sources or from people Im speaking to in Russia. No. That would be too close to a bygone era of reporting which left us long ago. All we have now is overweight buffoons like our Ben who, despite being an Arabic speaker was so poor in Lebanon that he managed to falsely report the countrys debt as mostly foreign who only report Russia though a Ukrainian prism which was probably written for him. This is how bad western media is. To be a journalist these days, you need two poignant skills. One, to have a great memory for the narrative that you have to replicate. And two, to have an almost morbid fear of nuance or detail. These CNN reporters were basically clueless and just made it up as they went along. They were, like most of us, nothing more than spectators, drowning in their own bigotry and blinded dogma.

Will it be these same morally bankrupt cretins, who will not even miss a heartbeat when a nuclear attack is made on a power station in Ukraine and they attribute it entirely to Russia? Of course, it will. Logically, they must follow through with their treacherous dark trade. They have been preparing their readers for this, as long back as the Novaya Kakhovka attack just weeks ago, where they weaved into the call-centre journalism copy warnings that there would soon be an attack on a nuclear power plant by the Russians!

Did those journalists who wrote this garbage do it out of sense of loyalty or patriotism to a western ideal? Or because they needed to chalk up some points to whoever fed them the line in the first place? These journalists will be the ones who will have blood on their hands though, if Zelensky goes ahead with the false flag attack as the Ukrainian president would only do so with the confidence that most, if not all, of western media will report it falsely to make it look like Russia was culpable.

To think that you dont have to look too hard to see this new generation of idiocy which has taken over all newsrooms when it comes to reporting on Ukraine. There is no reporting actually. It is entirely one editorializat...

The authority determined that Googles statistics tool was transferring personal data to the US. IMY states that the data transferred to the US is personal data because the data can be linked with other unique data that is transferred.

GDPR rules that personal data may be transferred to a country outside the EU/EEA, if the European Commission has decided that the country adopted an adequate level of protection for personal data that corresponds to that within the EU/EEA.

In its audits, IMY considers that the data transferred to the US via Googles statistics tool is personal data because the data can be linked with other unique data that is transferred. reads the announcement published by the Swedish data protection watchdog. The authority also concludes that the technical security measures that the companies have taken are not sufficient to ensure a level of protection that essentially corresponds to that guaranteed within the EU/EEA.

The results of the audits revealed that the four companies failed to implement sufficient additional technical security measures. IMY issues an administrative fine of 12 million SEK ($1.1 million) against Tele2 and 300,000 SEK ($27K) against CDON. Tele2 has voluntarily stopped using the Google statistics tool, the IMY ordered the other three companies to stop using the tool too.

These decisions have implications not only for these four companies, but can also provide guidance for other organisations that use Google Analytics says legal advisor Sandra Arvidsson, who led the audits of the companies.

Ministers were given stark warning that more children would die from suicide than from contracting Covid-19 if they shut schools, report reveals "IndyWatch Feed World"

Ministers were given a stark warning that more children would die from suicide than from contracting Covid-19 if they shut schools, a damning new report from parent campaigners has revealed. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on March 18, 2020, that England's schools were to close until further notice - and they would remain shut for longer than any other country in Europe. Many children returned to their classrooms in September 2020, only for schools to be shut again in January 2021. Even when they reopened that March, Covid outbreaks and isolation rules caused chaos. It has now emerged that the Government was warned in November 2020 that 'many more children will die from suicide than Covid-19 this year',' The Telegraph reports. That message was given in a joint briefing paper by the Department for Education and the Independent Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Behaviours - in which they cited a rise in self-harm among young people during lockdown.

America: The First True Global Talmudic Empire "IndyWatch Feed War"

Richard Solomon The Unz Review July 4, 2023

Throughout history, each evolutionary segment of linear empire incorporated its own symbols, archetypes, and myths to sell its messaging and justify its actions.. Rothschild Zionists currently run the US Anglo-Zionist empire, not just as behind-the-scenes financiers as was common in the past, but as hands on the wheel / in full public view managers. As a result, the empires metaphysical mass messaging uses the mind-speak of international Jewry. The Talmud* encourages theft, chicanery, duplicity, financial exploitation, torture, murder, slavery, and Jewish supremacism, making these traits the ideological glue that holds America together. Talmudic ideology combined with high-tech policing, greedy corporations, a ravenous military machine, and an all-powerful international banking cartel turned the US into the first true global Talmudic empire. (*Israel Shahak, Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years)

Global empires bleed out the foreign nations they subjugate, and eventually inflict the same fate on their citizens. As pointed out by economist Michael Hudson, the Roman Empire amassed great wealth for its oligarch and creditor/rentier classes, while the average Roman citizen lived in a state of bread and circuses poverty. The sun never set on the British Empire as it sucked the wealth from its vassal states, yet debtors prisons and workhouses abounded in Dickens London. The problem was so bad that economist Robert Malthus proposed using austerity to eliminate Englands wretched class. Sounds like Davos neoliberalism.

As the latest cosmic string iteration of empire, the United States suffers from the same pathologies as its predecessors, only more so. Once the hyper-capitalist Anglo-Saxon US republic transitioned into the hyper-capitalist US Anglo-Saxon empire (Monroe Doctrine?), Talmudic empire became possible, and later inevitable. Like Philip K. Dick repeated throughout his Valis novel, The Empire Never Ended.

Before I continue, a quick disclaimer. Im not indiscriminately Jew-bashing. I dig right-on Jews. Some of the leading opponents of Rothschild Zionism are Jews. Little Jews need to wake up to the Big Jew agenda. The pogrom program is an integral closing component of Big Jewrys bleed the host business model. Its great to be a Jew- until its not. The Synagogue of Satan empowers itself by using little Jew destruction karma. After 109 pogrom programs, international Jewish finance stands stronger than ever. End-stage controlled scarcity capitalism eventually devours everyone below the oligarchs and their managerial class. To simply focus on Jews without evaluating the entrenched systems misses the point. The Jewish crime families who control global finance dont need physical Jews to run the rigged automated Wall Street program or biometric ID surveillance....

ECMAScript 2023 Spec for JavaScript Finalized "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

ECMAScript 2023 spec for JavaScript finalized:

ECMAScript 2023, an update to the official specification for the JavaScript programming language, has been approved by ECMA International. The new spec adds new methods for searching and changing arrays, extends the WeakMap API to allow unique symbols, and introduces some standardization for the use of hashbangs.

Approved on June 27, the ECMAScript 2023 specification cites the following synopsis of improvements:

ECMAScript 2023, the 14th edition, introduced the toSorted, toReversed, with, findLast, and findLastIndex methods on Array.prototype and TypedArray.prototype, as well as the toSpliced method on Array.prototype; added support for #! comments at the beginning of files to better facilitate executable ECMAScript files; and allowed the use of most Symbols as keys in weak collections.

The finished proposals, published by the ECMA TC39 (Technical Committee 39) on GitHub, elaborate on the four features to be published this year:

  • Array find from last, a proposal for .findlast() and .findLastIndex() methods on array and typed array. Finding an element in an array is a very common programming pattern, the proposal states. Scenarios under which this feature would be used include when a developer knows that finding an element from last to first may have better performance, or developers care about the order of the elements.
  • Permitting symbols as keys in WeakMap keys, a proposal that extends the WeakMap API to allow the use of unique symbols as keys. Currently, WeakMaps are limited to allow only objects as keys.
  • Change array by copy, a proposal that provides additional methods on Array.prototype and TypedArray.prototype to enable changes on the array by returning a new copy of it with the change.
  • Hashbang grammar, a proposal to match the de facto usage in some CLI JS hosts that allow for Shebangs/Hashbang. These hosts strip the hashbang to generate valid JS source texts before passing to JS engines. This plan would move the stripping to engines and unify and standard...

White USC professor, 83, refuses to apologize after saying her career would have been better if she was black and lesbian prompting attendees at female historians conference to walk out "IndyWatch Feed War"

  • Lois Banner, a USC professor, is under fire for recent controversial comments
  • Banner said that her career would be better if she were black and a lesbian
  • The statements caused shock and outrage among those in attendance

Hope Sloop Daily Mail.com July 3, 2023

A white USC professor is under fire after she said during a recent conference that her career and life would be easier if she were black and a lesbian.

Lois Banner, a professor emerita of womens history at the University of Southern California, spoke during the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians on Friday.

Banner, 83, reportedly said she wished she were a lesbian because they had great communities and that her career would have been better if she were black.

You wont change my mind, Im 84 years old, Banner allegedly said, refusing to apologize. Her words were shared by Stephanie Narrow, a student in attendance.

According to conference guests, Banners antics came just moments after a black professor had spoken on racism and exclusion in the academic space.

She wrote that the event took a turn after Banner who she did not initially name shared her extremely controversial opinions.

A white senior scholar at the 50th anniversary plenary VERY publicly, and unapologetically, said that she wished she was Black so her professional life would be easier, Narrow tweeted out Friday night.

The student said that the professor who has a Ph.D. from Columbia University was shunned for the comments which caused an uproar.

She was immediately called out for her blatantly racist remarks, and refused to apologize, let alone listen, to the reason why her remarks were horrifying wrong.

Narrow went on to say that the room was shaken, calling the feeling that rippled through the auditorium palpable.

The student did not name Banner as the professor who had made the startling remarks until several hours later, but stated she had confirmed Banners identity.

Another crowd member, Paul Renfro of Florida State University, described the situation by saying that s**t went absolutely off the rails.

A lot of folks (myself included) walked out due to a dreadfully racist comment made by one of the presenters, Renfro tweeted on June 30.

She was reprimanded by several audience members, and quite a few attendees walked out, he said.

Exposed, the multi-billion-dollar illusion of HIV: Part 2 "IndyWatch Feed War"

Readers of TCW will be familiar with Neville Hodgkinsons critical reporting of the Covid crisis since December 2020, notably his expert, science-based informed alarm about the mass vaccine rollout, so absent from mainstream coverage. What they may be less aware of is the international storm this former Sunday Times medical and science correspondent created in the 1990s by reporting a scientific challenge to the HIV theory of Aids, presaging the hostile response to science critics of Covid today. In this series he details findings that form the substance of his newly updated and expanded book, How HIV/Aids Set the Stage for the Covid Crisis, on the controversy. It is available here. You can read the first part of this series here.

By Neville Hodgkinson | TCW Defending Freedom | July 4, 2023

When an idea is fervently adopted by most of the worlds doctors, scientists and politicians and supported by millions of people, it is a tall order to make the case for a rethink. Such was the experience of biophysicist Eleni Papadopulos-Eleopulos, who 40 years ago developed a detailed theory about Aids that contradicts the generally accepted belief that a deadly virus, HIV, is the cause. Decades of unremitting censorship and rejection preceded her death from heart failure in March 2022, aged 85.

Her story has important, and disturbing, implications for our understanding of what has been happening with the Covid crisis.

Born in Greek Macedonia, she and her brother Dmitris were part of a kinder diaspora sent to Eastern Europe to escape the Greek civil war of 1946-49. She was cared for well, and graduated with a Masters degree in nuclear physics from the University of Bucharest, Romania.

In 1965, at the age of 29, she was reunited with her family in Perth, Western Australia, where they had emigrated. She learned English and joined the staff of the medical physics department at the Royal Perth Hospital, remaining on the books there for more than half a century.

In September 1976 she married Kosta Eleopulos, also a child sent to Romania who eventually found his way to Australia. She blamed herself for his death, five years later, from gastric cancer, believing she should have been able to save him with the knowledge she had acquired.

Her jo...

When I see odd similar events happening at a wide reach being a Trends and Patterns kind of a guy I wonder about it.

Today is The 4th of July accompanied by a Super Moon in Capricorn. We are in Cancer and The Moon is always full in its opposite sign in the zodiac. Here is another indication more evidence of the clockwork nature of the universe.

I walked outside at 5:30 and there was a cool wind blowing. This is odd because the days average around 110 degrees this month. There was a palpable sense of well-being and good feeling in the air. I go out every day at about this time once I have completed my morning adjustments. (grin) Today is very different from anything I have experienced in recent times.

Today is The 4th of July. Yes I already said that. Somethings going on, and this something is not a temporal event. This is decidedly spiritual and an odd day for it. This being one of the major drinking holidays of the year, and amateur hour on the highway to follow.

Every day I see signs of change positive signs of change. Every day I personally am further removed from the static of this world. Every day I care less about the flotsam and jetsam floating by on the Gulf Streams of the minds great ocean. Every day I am further removed from the shrink-wrapped existence of Material Culture.

Yesterday I was speaking with the angelic representative of The Ineffable. That angel said, Well Visible it might not be so bad as many are expecting it to be; the many that are even paying attention because most people are caught up in keeping up with the pull of their desires and appetites. How the Spanish-American War Changed World History "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This is a useful item, considering how hte whole episode has been deeply downplayed vever since.  i certainly ignored it all and mostly saw it all as an abberation until you unde5rstyand that there was a clear stategic vision at work which then made all else possible.

even hawaii was part of this mix.  in fact this whole shameful episode was colony acquisition by another name at a time when everyone was into it.  so no need to suggest original thinking here but simple opportunism encouraged by someone possibly.  Was teddy really that smart?

The spanish were the helpless victims of all this and ultimately so were the philipine people.  Let us forget all that.

It is curious that my pursuit of Pilar led me back to this narritive a year or so ago. I am still waiting for Pilar.  The Spanish Civl War led there as well as this war and then to Hemmingway and his fishing boat. And i was given this name by an incarnation of a known hindu warrior.  So i need to wait.

Boreal forest husbandry "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

 Boreal forest husbandry.

I have posted on the agricultural potential of our boreal forest in the past and we identified several types of husbandry that certainly could go forward.

not least would be salmon farming in particular and including other fish types as well, all synced with the seasons and exploiting the massive insect larvae load in the lakes.  this allows fish fattening for a fall harvest to allow a reduced wintering over stock.

Pine tree culture has to be fully managed around three point sets well spaced to allow seventy percent sunlight during the summer.  this means forest grooming and herbavore pressure on young pines and brush and weeds.  The good news is that goats can actually do this in particular.  We know human grooming can drop branches at the six inch mark and annual tree topping to harvest green ripened pine cones will facilitates all this.  All this will create an open forest producing a saw log every two decades from any three point planting.

Then of course we have a natural husbandry of female moose and other deer family ruminants who can be fed using bull rush silage over winter.  all this could well lead to a dairy industry as well.

Way more important though is that opened woodlands will allow grass and weed culture to spring up which needs to be rotationally impacted by cattle or bison.  This will begin the process of producing grassland solis overtop acid forest soils and even rock.

what is clear though is that the slow build up of soil will increase stocking density over time.  Plan a thousand years, but also expect to be surprised.  not everything out there vis rock and sandy soils can convert quickly here.

The growing season is still short, but that means only a little in fact and winter outdoor husbandry is something we have already used a lot.  Wood bison are doing it somehow all the way way north.  Goats will not be a problem if they can eat mostly pine boughs which is when we would be tree grooming.  and let us not forget the huge amount of larch and aspen as well.

and we...

Is it time to hand over the torch to the next generation? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

LAST Friday, 30 June 2023, the Northern Ireland Youth assembly class of 2023 met in Parliament Buildings for their last plenary, chaired by the Assembly Speaker Alex Maskey. The topics for discussion were climate change, mental health, childrens and young peoples rights, relationships and sexuality education and why its important that young people have a voice in shaping policy and legislation on the issues that affect them.

What is interesting for me about the NI Youth assembly, apart from the issues they are passionate about, is how its members were selected to ensure that the assembly would be fully representative _ the categories considered are _ experience of the care system, Racial Group, LGBTQ+, Disability, Young Carers, Free school meals eligibility, Religious belief, Male and Female. Measures are also taken to ensure a geographic spread from each of the 18 Northern Ireland constituencies.

The message I hear from this is that inclusivity and intersectionality should be at the heart of policy and politics. Why then is it not at the heart of our actual assembly? Perhaps if our assembly was as diverse and representative, rather than predominantly orange and green, we wouldnt be in the position that we are in?

The Unfinished business of Peace and Reconciliation: A Call to Action report, published in May 2023, lists enhance youth participation as one of its key objectives. One of the Youth Peace summit participants is noted as having said, theyre (politicians)not changing their future. They are changing ours, another noted, parties are still focused on religion rather than actual policies and a lot of communities have suffered because of this. The Youth Peace summit participants had numerous insightful contributions and seem to have a clear sense of what is happening here, perhaps we should take it a step further than enhance participation and just hand over the reins?

I can imagine a lot of people reading this saying, but they dont understand what we went through!, well I for one am glad that they dont. It is a widely held belief that it takes two generations to effect change. Those born in 1998, at the time of the Good Friday Agreement, are now 25 years old and the 2nd generation is the generation they are raising right now. What we do now is fundamentally important in shaping our future, we are raising our future leaders, perhaps we should work harder on the environment we raise them in?

Some are already seeing the benefits of youth, with Lewis Boyles election to Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, an 18 year old A-level student, thought to be NIs youngest elected representative. It seems to me, the only way forward for Northern Ireland is, if I can misquote Patsy Cline, to see the world through the eyes of our youth. So why not hand over the day-to-day business of government to the incoming NI Youth assembly, they cant....

Gender Fascist Moms for Liberty Conference Met with Resistance in Philadelphia "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Report from Philadelphia on the recent protests against the Moms for Liberty conference.

What follows is a short blow-by-blow report from the streets of Philadelphia, as people turned out to shout down the gender fascist Moms for Liberty conference which saw speeches from both Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis.

Thursday

Resistance to the far-Right and anti-LGBTQ+ conference started early with banner drops, an anarchist organized counter-march where graffiti slogans are written, and a direct action against a venue hosting Moms for Liberty attendees.

Friday

As the Moms 4 Liberty summit kicked off with their first day of meetings, the dance party outside enjoyed themselves with raucous joy. Despite an absurdly large police presence when Donald Trump arrived to speak, the partiers managed to hold the street in front of the Marriott for the day. With temperatures pushing 90 and and air quality advisory from the Canadian wildfires, revelers were encouraged to mask up, drink water, and take care of each other.

A Dusty Boat Anchor Back From The Brink "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Many of us will have found dusty forgotten pieces of electronics and nursed them back to health, but we were captivated by [Don]s tale of electronic revival. Instead of perhaps a forgotten computer or television, his barn find was a Heathkit linear amplifier for radio amateurs. In that huge box underneath an impressive layer of grime were a pair of huge tubes, along with all the power supply components to give them the 2 kV they need. It should have been good for a kilowatt when new, can it be made to go on air again?

Perhaps understandably with such an old device, after cleaning away the dust of ages he replaced the power supply circuitry with new parts and PCBs. A linear amplifier is surprisingly simple, but because of the voltages and power concerned theres a need to treat its power circuits with respect. On first power-up the filaments work and the rails come up, so when given some RF drive it comes alive. Coupled with a case restoration youd never know how dreadful a state it had been in.

We like to see classic Heathkit devices here at Hackaday, though weve followed their more recent reappearance too.

Kuttamperoor River Rejuvenated And Brought Back To Life By Community "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Scoop Whoop

If you took a look around and saw just how much pollution has destroyed so much of nature, your heart would bleed. Its sad to see how people were left to do their own devices and throw trash where these shouldnt be thrown. Because of this, much of what was once beautiful have been destroyed.

Then, there are also communities that know what their responsibilities are and actually do something about it. Its always heartwarming to see people come together to clean up after themselves and fix what they destroyed.

As is the case with a once-biologically dead river located in Southern India. It was extremely dirty and it had been left for dead. Recently, the river has been revived to the fullest extent, thanks to the local dedication and the involvement of the government.

As a tributary of the Pampa and Achencoil rivers, the 4-mile-long Kuttamperoor River has for centuries been a source of life for the people in the area.
