Kurzes Update zur Vodafone-Situation.Vodafone hat nicht ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

(Ach! Was Sie nicht sagen!

Danke, Vodafone!

Quantum Frustration Leads to Fundamental Physics Discovery: A New Phase of Matter "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A team of physicists, including University of Massachusetts assistant professor Tigran Sedrakyan, recently announced in the journal Nature that they have discovered a new phase of matter. Called the chiral bose-liquid state, the discovery opens a new path in the age-old effort to understand the nature of the physical world.

Under everyday conditions, matter can be a solid, liquid, or gas. But once you venture beyond the everydayinto temperatures approaching absolute zero.

Absolute zero is the theoretical lowest temperature on the thermodynamic temperature scale. At this temperature, all atoms of an object are at rest and the object does not emit or absorb energy. The internationally agreed-upon value for this temperature is 273.15 C (459.67 F; 0.00 K).

Starlink is One Among Many LEO Constellations Affected by Satellite Signal Jamming "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

After Russian hackers destroyed Viasat satellite ground receivers spanning Europe, SpaceX provided coverage via Starlink, its Lower Earth Orbit satellite constellation, and soon began noticing cyberattacks and software interferences. Now, a year later, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Russia is still attempting to complicate connections within the satellite constellation and others like it.

Documents were leaked by U.S. National Guard airman Ryan Teixeira, as reported by The Washington Post back in April of 2023. Ukraine has also stated it is experiencing similar security issues.

Russias quest to sabotage Ukrainian forces internet access by targeting the Starlink satellite operations that billionaire Elon Musk has provided to Kyiv since the wars earliest days appear to be more advanced than previously known, according to a classified U.S. intelligence report.

SpaceXs Falcon 9 carrying the PSN Satria satellite successfully launched and deployed at 6:21 PM ET (22:21 UTC).

The launch had a 178-minute window, and upper-level winds delayed the first launch attempt at the opening of the window, but SpaceX had plenty of time to work with and launched just a bit later into the launch window.

The PSN Satria Indonesian Telecommunications was first contracted to be built in 2020 by Thales Alenia Spaceby the Indonesian government and delivered to the launch site in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in May 2023.

New Research Shows HIV Can Lie Dormant in the Brain "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Scientists from the HIV Cure Center at the UNC School of Medicine, University of California San Diego, Emory University, and University of Pennsylvania have been searching for where exactly these latent cells are hiding in the body. New research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigations confirms that microglial cells which are specialized immune cells with a decade-long lifespan in the brain can serve as a stable viral reservoir for latent HIV.

Yuyang Tang, PhD, and Guochun Jiang, PhD, in the UNC School of Medicine extracted living brain tissue to conclude that specialized immune cells in the brain can harbor latent but replication-competent HIV.

As a part of its life cycle, the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV) inserts a copy of its DNA into human immune cells. Some of these newly infected immune cells can then transition into a dormant, latent state for a long period of time, which is referred to as HIV latency.

Although current therapies, such current antiretroviral therapy (ART), can successfully block the virus from replicating further, it cannot eradicate latent HIV. If treatment is ever discontinued, the virus can rebound from latency and reignite the progression of HIV infection to AIDS.

I guess it depends a bit on what you consider an object? And whether I should limit it to things I have a realistic possibility of ever buying. Is a house an object? If so, Id like a Victorian in a walkable neighborhood, please. If a house isnt, but a car is, Id like a Hyundai Ioniq or Kia EV6. Im under no misapprehension that electric cars are a real solution to climate change; we need to aim at eliminating cars almost entirely, in favor of universal quality public transit. While Im waiting on that dream, I hate my current car. It gets much worse in-town gas mileage than I expected it to, and has been unexpectedly expensive to maintain. I dont have any foreseeable chance of buying either of those things, since electric cars are still priced as luxury items here in the US.

Watch: RFK Jr. says he must 'be careful' the CIA doesn't assassinate him "IndyWatch Feed World"

During a discussion with Joe Rogan, Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy junior admitted that he is putting his life in danger by speaking out about the assassinations of his uncle and his father, and that he "takes precautions" to ensure the CIA doesn't kill him. Rogan asked RFK Jr. what he thought would happen if he managed to get into office, to which Kennedy replied "I gotta be careful." "I'm aware of that, you know, I'm aware of that danger. I don't live in fear of it at all. But I'm not stupid about it, and I take precautions," he added. Kennedy spoke about his Uncle JFK being "at war" with the military industrial complex, and asserted that the intelligence agencies were "trying to trick him" into launching military excursions into Cuba and Vietnam.

EU member states are urged to restrict without delay 5G equipment from risky suppliers "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The European Commission urges member states to limit without delay equipment from Chinese suppliers from their 5G networks, specifically Huawei and ZTE.

The European Commission told member states to impose restrictions on high-risk suppliers for 5G networks without delay, with a specific focus on the dependency on high-risk suppliers, specifically Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE.

According to a second report on Member States progress in implementing the EU Toolbox on 5G Cybersecurity, member states are recommended to ensure that the restrictions cover critical and highly sensitive assets identified in the EU Coordinated risk assessment, including the Radio Access Network.

The report was prepared by Member States authorities (NIS Cooperation Group), with the support of the Commission and the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA).

Ten Member States have used these powers to impose obligations on MNOs to restrict or exclude suppliers considered as high-risk from their 5G networks. reads the report published by the EU. Several Member States have taken measures to restrict the use of, or exclude, high-risk suppliers or components. In three Member States, decisions on high-risk suppliers or equipment are taken based on applications from MNOs to deploy 5G equipment. One Member State has taken a public decision to exclude Huawei and ZTE from its 5G network.

The report provides an overview of the implementation of the EU Toolboxs strategic and technical measures. The strategic measures aimed at mitigating risks associated with long-term dependency on specific suppliers. The technical measures focus on bolstering the security of 5G networks and equipment, analyzing the problems from different perspectives, including technologies, processes, human involvement, and physical elements.

The call to restrict the suppliers is subordinate to the assessments made by member states national authorities.

The report highlights the risks to collective security associated with delays in limiting the provision of network equipment from high-risk suppliers.

Out of the twenty-four Member States that possess or are in the process of developing legislative powers, seventeen have already implemented or are planning to adopt an ex-ante approach. This approach allows the states to restrict the deployment of 5G equipment from risky providers. Additionally, nineteen Member States have already confirmed their ability to enforce the removal of exis...

When victims of bigotry act are bigoted towards others "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

While I am generally optimistic about humanitys capacity to do the right thing in general and over long time scales, one thing that I have been disillusioned by over shorter time scales is how people who have been subjected to discrimination and persecution when they are are in the minority, discriminate against other minorities when they gain political power. You would think that their own experience of being treated badly would make them feel empathy for other discriminated minority groups. But not so. One sees this switching from being the victim of discrimination to the perpetrators in many different contexts, be it religion, ethnicity, or nationality.

One recent example is that of the city of Hamtramck, Michigan where Muslims, who are often discriminated against in the US, became the dominant group in the city council. Now they have turned against the LGBTQ+ community, banning the pride flag on city properties.

In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city attracted international attention for becoming the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council.

They viewed the power shift and diversity as a symbolic but meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric that was a central theme of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trumps campaign.

This week many of those same residents watched in dismay as a now fully Muslim and socially conservative city council passed legislation banning Pride flags from being flown on city property that had like many others being flown around the country been intended to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Muslim residents packing city hall erupted in cheers after the councils unanimous vote, and on Hamtramcks social media pages, the taunting has been relentless: Fagless City, read one post, emphasized with emojis of a bicep flexing.

Theres a sense of betrayal, said the former Hamtramck mayor Karen Majewski, who is Polish American. We supported you when you were threatened, and now our rights are threatened, and youre the one doing the threatening.

For about a century, Polish and Ukrainian Catholics dominated politics in Hamtramck, a city of 28,000 surrounded by Detroit. By 2013, largely Muslim Bangladeshi and Yemeni immigrants supplanted the white eastern Europeans, though the city remains home to significant populations of those groups, as well as African Americans, whites and Bosnian and Albanian Americans. According to the 2020 census some 30% to 38% of Hamtramcks residents are of Yemeni descent, and 24% are of Asian descent, largely Bangladeshi.

After several years of diversity on the council, some see irony in an all-male, Muslim elected government that does not reflect the city...

Migration: Europes Complicity in Massive Human Rights Violations "IndyWatch Feed War"

Human Wrongs Watch

MADRID, Jun 19 2023 (IPS)* Make no mistake: European States are complicit in the death of thousands and thousands of human beings on their shores, land borders and at home. The massive drowning of hundreds of migrants close to Greece shores on 14 June is just a new chapter in Europes long series of continued violations of all international human rights laws.

These human tragedies are playing out at Europes land and sea borders on a daily basis. The first quarter of this year marked the deadliest in the central Mediterranean in six years, say humanitarian organisations in a joint statement. Credit: UN News Centre

So far, 10 worldwide known humanitarian organisations have strongly reacted, in a joint denunciation statement, asking the European Union (EU) to end rights violations at Europes borders.

In their Joint NGO statement: The EU must not be complicit, launched on 16 June, organisations like Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, OXFAM and Save the Children, among others, warned that once again, dozens of lives have been lost at Europes borders due to the EUs failure to allow people seeking protection to reach Europe safely.

Hundreds are missing and presumed dead after the latest tragedy close to the Greek coast, with reports that amongst the dead are many women and children who were held below the deck of this overcrowded fishing vessel.

House Oversight Chairman says there is evidence of $20-$30 million of illegal payments to Bidens "IndyWatch Feed World"

House Oversight Chairman James Comer revealed Thursday that he expects there is evidence of at least $20-$30 million being made in illegal payments by foreign nationals to the Biden family. Appearing on Fox Business, Comer stated "We have more bank records coming in but we're gonna exceed $10 million this week but I think we'll get up to $20-$30 million." He further noted that it is becoming clear that the Bidens potentially engaged in bribery, influence peddling, and money laundering. "This is going to be hard for Biden to explain, this is not going to go away, and I think eventually the mainstream media is going to start asking the real questions," Comer added.

Planetary Heat is Happening Fast, and Faster "IndyWatch Feed War"

The evidence is starting to build that all bets are off on predictions that humanity has a decade, or more, of clear sailing before global warming turns vicious enough to run roughshod over climate change deniers and the mean-spirited, anti-climate-change Republican Party. Voters better smarten up by 2024 or suffer the consequences. At least the Democrats enacted a partial baby-sized climate bill. Giveem credit.

Recent reports from Copernicus, the EU Earth Observation Programme, and Dr. James Hansen, Earth Institute Columbia University, point to the risks of an earlier than expected upside breakout of the 1.5C (2.7F) limit set by the Paris Agreement of 2015 and endorsed by 195 countries. Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Agreement but Biden put the U.S. back in. Trump is 99% anti-science, maybe 100%.

Conclusively, coastal cities of the world should move up target dates for building seawalls. But how many seawalls are on drawing boards? A recent UN report (2022) finds that communities around the world havent done nearly enough to prepare for climate change (IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Climate change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability).

Restoring wetlands, which act as natural sponges, should be prioritized. Most wetlands have been paved over or plowed under. Coastal cities are not even close to being prepared for ocean flooding episodes, which will one day be greeted by tens of thousands of pissed off citizens stacking sandbags, or will they pack it in and head out for higher territory? Theyll pack it in.

A recent YaleEnvironment360 headline: As 1.5 Degrees Looms, Scientists See Growing Risk of Runaway Warming, Urgent Need to Slash Emissions, March 15, 2023. Its a nice headline but forget it; slashing emissions has never happened, and it wont until lower Manhattan floods for good. Factually, an urgent need to slash emissions is not anywhere to be found. Its just simply not happening.

The rich are bad everywhere "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I couldnt get past the opening paragraphs of this article.

While thousands of Ukrainians were fleeing their submerged homes after a catastrophic dam explosion last week, high-society Russians gathered for a glitzy restaurant festival in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, just 500 miles away from the devastating flooding.

The event, called Gastreet, saw some 5,000 citizens pay up to $2,000 dollars for the opportunity to listen to some of Russias top businessmen, restaurant owners, and influencers over the course of five days. The event also included concerts, lavish nightlife experiences, and gourmet dinners.

If theres one thing that was made clear at the Sochi resort, its that no amount of Western sanctions, Kremlin restrictions, or spillover violence within Russia can stop the countrys rich and famous from living largedespite the raging war in neighboring Ukraine.

Ummm, yes? Is this news? Do you think this is a Russian phenomenon? People are starving in the US, and we still have our Met Galas. America continues to bomb Afghanistan with drones, its just too boring to make the news, while influencers get paid to pose with beer brands. Our public schools continue to get almost daily visits from fanatics with assault rifles, while a reality show called Bridezillas has been running on cable for almost 20 years.

Any time you have colossal economic disparities, youre going to get these kinds of contrasts. Neither the oligarchs of Russia nor the investment bankers of America are going to feel any pain, and theyre all going to frolic in the wreckage of other peoples suffering.

MHRA admits that it missed Covid vaccine safety signals "IndyWatch Feed World"

I'm not one prone to hyperbole but MHRA's latest response to one of my freedom of information (FOI) requests seems to me to be a straightforward admission that it missed Covid vaccine safety signals up to mid 2022 (not to mention safety signals with other vaccines). Last year, whilst trawling through minutes of meetings of the Commission on Human Medicines (here and specifically here), I discovered that MHRA had been concerned about the large numbers of Covid vaccine Yellow Card reports swamping the database and distorting the statistical analysis it relies on to detect safety signals. MHRA was concerned enough to conduct an investigation, write a report and consult the Commission on Human Medicines about it in June 2022. So I submitted an FOI last December asking for a copy of MHRA's report. This was all mentioned in the Perseus Report of which I was a co-author. Russian nukes will remain in Belarus indefinitely - senior diplomat "IndyWatch Feed World"

The agreement between Moscow and Minsk to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus does not imply any time limits, a Russian Foreign Ministry official has said. The first batch of nuclear warheads had already arrived in Belarus last week. Speaking to media on Monday, Alexei Polishchuk, who serves as the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's second department of CIS countries, explained that Moscow's decision to proceed with the placement of its nuclear weapons in Belarus came as a "forced response" to the aggressive policies of the US and NATO. He noted that when the details of the Moscow-Minsk agreement were being ironed out, the two sides considered the "years-long destructive practices" of joint nuclear missions of NATO member states.

Turkey's lira suffers longest run of losses in 24 years "IndyWatch Feed World"

The lira is headed for its longest run of weekly losses this century as Turkey's new economic team curbs its intervention in the currency market. The Turkish currency depreciated another 1% this week, after last week's 11% slide. It's now been falling since early March, in the longest streak of losses since 1999. The declines have quickened following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's re-election on May 28. In the 18 months before the vote, the central bank used up nearly $200 billion of reserves trying to bolster the currency, yet it remained one of the worst performers in emerging markets. Erdogan has now appointed two former Wall Street bankers Mehmet Simsek and Hafize Gaye Erkan to run the country's finances, signaling a potential shift from heavy state intervention in favor of allowing the market to determine the currency's fair value.

Jim Jordan (R-OH) laid out the details of the incident, which he described as "bizarre," in a letter Friday to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel, asking Werfel for an array of documents related to the matter. "We have recently received allegations that an Internal Revenue Service agent provided a false name to an Ohio taxpayer as part of a deception to gain entry into the taxpayer's home to confront her about delinquent tax filings," Jordan wrote. According to Jordan, the allegations included the agent falsely telling the resident, who is the fiduciary of an estate, that his name was "Bill Haus" and that he needed to discuss an issue the IRS had found with her tax filings on the estate.

National Poll Shows RFK Jr. Tops All Other Politicians in Net Approval-Rating "IndyWatch Feed War"

The  Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll taken during 14-15 June 2023, shows the following net approval rating (Favorable minus Unfavorable) for all of the listed possible candidates:

+21% Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
+9% Elon Musk
+9% Tim Scott
+8% Vivek Ramaswamy
+5% Ron DeSantis
+4% Nikki Haley
-1% Bernie Sanders
-3% Donald Trump, Doug Bergum, Ted Cruz
-6% Maryanne Williamson
-7% Kevin McCarthy, Mike Pence, Asa Hutchinson
-8% Chuck Schumer
-10% Kamala Harris, Joe Manchin, Gavin Newsom
-11% Joe Biden
-12% Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
-16% Chris Christie
-17% Hillary Clinton
-24% Mitch McConnell

Kennedy is tied with Trump for Favorable at 45% for each, but whereas Trump has a 48% Unfavorable rating, Kennedys Unfavorable is only 25%; so, if Party-affiliation were not a factor (which was the intention of Americas Founders), then Kennedy would at the present time be the most preferred person to become President.

Musk ties with them on Favorable at 45%, and his Unfavorable is 36%; so, hes currently the second-most-preferred next President.

DeSantiss Favorable is 43%, while his Unfavorable is 37%; but the closest whole number reflecting the difference (his Net Favorable) is +5% not +6%.

Sanderss Favorable is 42%, while his Unfavorable is 43%; so, his Net Favorable is -1%.

Though Scott is tied with Musk at +9% Net Favorable, Scotts Favorable is 10% less than Musks, at 35% Favorable. Scotts Unfavorable is 25%, as compared to Musks 36% Unfavorable. (Scott isnt as well-known as is Musk.)

Ramaswamys Favorable is 27%, and his Unfavorable is 18%; so, hes even less-well-known than is Scott.

The most-well-known possible candidates are Trump and Biden tied at 93% known. Clinton is 90% known. Harris is 88% known. Sanders is 85% known.

Kennedy is only 70% known. Thats 30% unknown; so, though he is currently by far the leading candidate, he also is the major prospective candida...

THE media in the UK is perhaps least trusted among people of the same country. By some measures, the UK is in last place in Europe, as measured among the domestic population. Its not a new problem and the subject was being raised a lot back in the dawn of the Brexit referendum, in which many voters relied on lies. The problem is so severe that I refuse to access any mainstream news site in the UK. Many others who live here feel the same way. Thats a lot worse/lower than in east European countries and this new survey says, as per the Press Gazette [1]: Trust in news in the UK was at 33%, joint 12th lowest among 46 markets.

The problem is so severe that I refuse to access any mainstream news site in the UK.The Press Gazette also says [2] UK science publisher Texere acquired by Broadcast Med (everything is up for sale; the biggest papers in the UK are also being sold and our former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will write for a notorious tabloid which spreads lie).

The United States has a similar problem, but the media culture there is different from Europes and some clueless politicians try to pass new laws that would further kill the press, not just the Net. Public Knowledge wrote about this twice a few days ago [3-4].

This past weekend I spent endless time working on tools to better curate the news, seeing that about 90% of the news in my RSS feeds are worthless junk and perhaps 5% are actually important.Social control media wont replace the media. We wrote about Reddit, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook in recent days and they all struggle. See the new article [5] entitled Website Owners Say Traffic Is Plummeting After a Facebook Algorithm Change (Facebook sees decline in active users and will thus try to retain whats left of them inside the walled garden).

Why Good Weather Isn't a Good Thing for Stock Markets "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A study suggests sunny weather can influence how investors perform and affect stock market prices:

Sunshine levels have a significant impact on the bidding behaviour of stock market investors, according to new research.

The study examined the relationship between sunny weather and how market participants perform, as well as the subsequent seasoned equity offerings (SEOs). These discounts for shares act as an effective tool for companies to raise finance and are essential for a functioning modern economy.

[...] The data revealed investors made higher bids in sunny periods, which led to lower discounts for shares in the primary market. In fact, just a one standard deviation increase in sunshine intensity caused bid discounts to decline by 2.4 percent, while a one standard deviation increase in sunshine duration caused bid discounts to drop by 3.33 percent.

Professor Jia Liu, CISF Centre Director and Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Portsmouth, said: "With sunny weather, often come good spirits which in many circumstances is a positive, but that's not the case with financial decision-making. When the sunshine intensifies, bidders become overly optimistic and less risk-averse, which can lead to higher bid prices for seasoned equities."

Existing research has shown meteorological conditions, especially exposure to sunshine, affects a person's emotional state and sentiment. These weather-driven moods have been proved to influence a buyer's car choice, art prices at auction, and the tendency to take risks in a lottery.

[...] Professor Liu added: "We want to make investors aware that during periods of sunny weather, they become more optimistic about their investments. This will make them more inclined to take risks that aren't justified by asset values. Therefore, they should factor this consideration in when bidding for shares or they might suffer losses.

"Maintaining the stability of markets could depend upon our understanding of this phenomenon, since the onset of climate change might have an increasingly destabilizing impact on the judgment of investors and market-makers, with unpredictable consequences for global trading."

Putins shocking revelations show there can be no negotiations with Kiev "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

By Drago Bosnic | June 19, 2023

Respecting deals between countries or governments goes back millennia and includes civilizations such as Sumerians and Ancient Egyptians. This was always considered a sort of litmus test of a certain countrys or rulers reputation and it stuck for a very long time. In essence, this practice predates the very concept of international law and is in many ways its direct predecessor. However, it would seem certain countries havent really got the memo about how important respecting treaties is and what disastrous consequences may follow if one doesnt.

On June 17, during a meeting with a number of African leaders and delegates who came to Moscow to offer a solution that would end the Ukrainian conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a shocking revelation and even gave details of a March 2022 peace deal with the Kiev regime. The agreement, titled the Treaty on the Permanent Neutrality and Security Guarantees for Ukraine (negotiated with the mediation of the Turkish government), was actually signed by the Kiev regime. However, the Neo-Nazi junta decided to discontinue its compliance with the treaty as soon as Russia kept its own initial end of the bargain.

Apart from other, more technical details, the deal included a clause that was supposed to be one of the key points of the Ukrainian Constitution and that would guarantee the countrys permanent neutrality. The very fact that Russia was insisting on this makes the claims that Moscow allegedly wanted to conquer Ukraine a moot point. In return for neutrality, the Russian military was to pull out and effectively end the special military operation (SMO). To back up his claims, President Putin also presented the relevant documentation of the abortive peace deal to the African delegates.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that, with President Erdogans assistance, as you know, a string of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Turkey so as to work out both the confidence-building measures you mentioned, and to draw up the text of the agreement. We did not discuss with the Ukrainian side that this treaty would be classified, but we have never presented it, nor commented on it. This draft agreement was initiated by the head of the Kiev negotiation team. He put his signature there. Here it is, Putin stated and then presented the documents.

The documents also revealed that apart from Russia, other guarantors of the agreement were the United States, the United Kingdom and France. The only non-Western guarantor was China. The deal als...

The Right-Wing Recipe "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The way conservatives have promoted stupid ideas on social issues to become the dominant narrative in the news is simple and interestingand horrifying.

  • Start with a cranky, bigoted idea that few people like.
  • Create a group with a catchy name that does sound like something theyd like: Moms for Liberty, for instance, or The American College of Pediatricians. They sound sensible and reasonable, right?
  • Find your few fellow like-minded cranks and bigots, and get them to sign up for your group. All it takes is a few to seed your cause.
  • It used to be that youd fire up your fax machine, but nowadays its even easier: get on Facebook. Facebook lets any ol crap get through.
  • Start spamming the media with press alerts. Eventually, some gullible newspaper or television network like Fox News will invite you on. Youll find more cranks and bigots.
  • Eventually, a billionaire a demographic thats particularly rich in idiots will find you and throw money at you, and youre a success.

Its been happening. The anti-choice movement in this country is driven by a small number of cranky zealots who have mastered this recipe, as illustrated by The American College of Pediatricians.

A small group of conservative doctors has sought to shape the nations most contentious policies on abortion and transgender rights by promoting views rejected by the medical establishment as scientific fact, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post that describe the groups internal strategies.

The records show that after long struggling to attract members, the American College of Pediatricians gained outsize political influence in recent years, primarily by using conservative media as a megaphone in its quest to position the group as a reputable source of information.

The organization has successfully lobbied since 2021 for laws in more than a half-dozen states that ban gender-affirming care for transgender youths, with its representatives testifying before state legislatures against the guid...

Backgrounder: The EUs Artificial Intelligence Act "IndyWatch Feed War"

The European Union (EU), known for pioneering digital regulation, recently passed the Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA). This comprehensive regulatory scheme represents the first attempt to regulate artificial intelligence. In an effort to understand the AIAs impact on future legislation, this article aims to explore the critical elements of the AIA, the implications for Europes tech competitiveness, and the geopolitical dimensions surrounding AI regulations, particularly in North America and East Asia.

Overview of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act

The EUs AIA represents a landmark in digital regulation. The Act is based on a risk-based approach and classifies AI systems into four categories: Unacceptable risk, High risk, Limited risk, and Minimal risk. This classification forms the backbone of the AIAs regulatory structure.

Unacceptable Risk: This category includes AI systems considered a clear threat to the safety, livelihood, and rights of individuals, leading to their prohibition. Examples of such systems include AI-based social scoring systems, which could have profound implications on an individuals privacy and freedom.

Large waterspout seen from New Orleans bridge "IndyWatch Feed World"

A large waterspout was seen swirling next to the I-10 Twin Span Bridge in New Orleans, Louisiana, as scattered storms moved through the region, on Sunday, June 18. Garrett Foster told Storyful he was driving towards the city with his partner when they spotted the confirmed waterspout near Lake Borgne. "Half way into the I-10 Twin Span Bridge right outside of New Orleans, [my partner and I] looked to our left and saw a ginormous waterspout heading our way," Foster told Storyful. "We looked at each other in disbelief and contemplated whether or not we should be worried and what we would do if the waterspout hit us," he said. "We ended up putting the pedal to the metal and racing off the bridge safe and sound... We hope everyone else who was on that bridge made it home safely."

Guest post: How Chinas rural solar policy could also boost heat pumps "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Since 2021, Chinas Whole County PV programme has been dramatically expanding the use of solar power in rural areas, by building on government, commercial, industrial and residential rooftops.

However, the programme faces a number of obstacles, with problems reported, for example, in the rollout in the province of Shandong in eastern China.

Yet it also offers advantages that can overcome the problem of scale. Installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on rooftops over a large area can clear out administrative burdens and reduce soft costs, which are inherent in marketing and installing solar to households or businesses one by one.

This raises an intriguing possibility: could such a programme work for other clean energy improvements, such as energy efficiency or clean heating?

Based on my new analysis for the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies of the Chinese counties participating in the Whole County PV programme, the answer appears to be yes.

Moreover, I found that the solar programme would pair surprisingly well with electric heat pumps.

This is an important finding, given the huge scale of rural China, which is home to hundreds of millions of people and is larger than many world regions. And it could also help to address another challenge: Chinas rural residents currently suffer a high burden of health issues due to the use of coal for heat and power.

What is Chinas Whole County PV programme?

Up until recently, most solar PV in China was installed in remote western regions, requiring costly transmission lines to bring the electricity to eastern provinces that use the most power.

A series of huge clean energy bases......

US-China Decoupling: A Double-Edged Sword for South Korea "IndyWatch Feed War"

The intensifying trade dispute between the United States and China, particularly within the semiconductor sector, has added layers of complexity for technology exporters worldwide. A notable player caught in this conflict is South Korea, a country whose economy relies heavily on its semiconductor industry and whose geopolitical ties with the US and China create an intricate balancing act.

South Korea maintains a commanding position in the global semiconductor market, with industry leaders Samsung and SK Hynix responsible for the majority of worldwide memory chip production. The notable impact of this industry on the nations economic health is apparent, as electronics form a substantial portion of South Korean exports, with estimates as high as 30%. Furthermore, the US and China represent South Koreas two largest export markets, making any future export bans or stipulations by either side a costly adjustment for South Korean manufacturers.

The Taliban's successful opium ban is bad for Afghans and the world sez the US "IndyWatch Feed World"

The ban is not a counter-narcotics victory and will have negative economic and humanitarian consequences, potentially leading to a refugee crisis. The Taliban have done it again: implementing a nearly complete ban against cultivation of opium poppy Afghanistan's most important agricultural product repeating their similarly successful 2000-2001 prohibition on the crop. But the temptation to view the current ban in an overly positive light as an important global counter-narcotics victory must be avoided. This is particularly true given the state of Afghanistan's economy and the country's humanitarian situation. Indeed, the ban imposes huge economic and humanitarian costs on Afghans and it is likely to further stimulate an outflow of refugees. It may even result in internal challenges for the Taliban itself. And, in the long run, it will not have lasting counter-narcotics benefits within Afghanistan or globally. Phasing out Afghanistan's problematic drug economy will be...

Today I learned about Gell-Mann Amnesia "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Why didnt I know this term before? Its useful.

The phenomenon of people believing newspapers on topics which they are not knowledgeable about, despite recognizing them to be extremely inaccurate on certain topics which they are knowledgeable about.

Its also amusing, because the term was coined by Michael Crichton, who is a prime example of a beneficiary of the Gell-Mann effect people think hes credible on the things he wrote about, which he wasnt.

This video creator also discusses what she calls Mann-Gell Amnesia, where a genuine expert gets all hung up on an irrelevant error in minor simplifications, not recognizing that science communication often involves making simplifications that need to be later corrected, as people get deeper into a topic.

Its a long video, but hang in there for her explanation of why Michio Kaku is dead to her.

3D-printed superalloy could make power plants more efficient "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A new high-performance metal alloy, called a superalloy, could help boost the efficiency of the turbines used in power plants and the aerospace and automotive industries.

Created using a 3D printer, the superalloy is composed of a blend of six elements that altogether form a material thats both lighter and stronger than the standard materials used in conventional turbine machinery. The strong superalloy could help industries cut both costs and carbon emissions if the approach can be successfully scaled up.

The challenge: In the world of materials science, the search for new metal alloys has been heating up in recent years. For over a century, weve depended on relatively simple alloys like steel, composed of 98% iron, to form the backbone of our manufacturing and construction industries. But todays challenges demand more: alloys that can withstand higher temperatures and remain strong under stress, yet still be lightweight.

Most Prolific World Cup Pirates Also Most Likely to Use a Paid Service "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

footballThe World Cup only takes place every four years so when the opportunity to see the worlds best players arrived again last year, an estimated 1.5 billion eventually tuned in to see the elite square off in the final.

Millions cheered on the French national team as the defending champions pursued glory against Argentina. After the French lost in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, for some it became a tournament to forget. For French telecoms regulator Arcom, the end of the competition signaled the start of research to determine how citizens consumed World Cup 2022 and how France benefited from it financially.

World Cup 2022 Audiovisual Broadcasting Review

Published this week, Arcoms study reveals that more than six out of 10 French people watched or listened to at least one live match during the World Cup, a figure that rose to 73% in respect of all content, including replays, match analysis, and behind-the-scenes reporting.

Of those who watched live matches, 90% did so from home, with television the medium of choice for 96% of respondents. Around one in five football fans watched at least one match on a smartphone, with 14% and 7% viewing on computers and tablets, respectively.

Most Fans Watched Matches for Free

Football is traditionally seen as a sport of the people, with national teams serving their countries and citizens rather than their usual corporate paymasters. For these and similar reasons, some countries have laws or regulations in place that prevent the whole of the World Cup from being locked away behind TV subscription packages.

In France, all matches played by the national team must be broadcast on a widely accessible system, at no charge to the public. The same applies to the opening match, semi-finals, and the final, regardless of which teams are playing.

Free TV broadcaster TF1 won the rights to air these games in 2022 and, as a result, 87% of those who watched live World Cup matches did so on TF1, legally and for free.

Paywalls Guarantee Piracy

Of the 64 matches played in the tournament, 36 matches were broadcast exclusively by beIN Sports. Since users of beIN must have a subscription, piracy of World Cup matches was effectively gu...

If Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Were President, How Safe Would We Be? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Since I published what so far is a series of five columns exploring RFK Jr.s positions and claims, almost the entirety of the media, it seems, has jumped in, each offering another variation on why you wouldnt want this guy anywhere near the White House. Most have stuck to a general recitation of his well-cataloged history of controversies, and the pros and cons of having the Kennedy name.

There are certainly some pros. First off, we should all remember the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of his early years. When he was not engaging in foolhardy personal behavior, he was trying to be a good citizen, doing praiseworthy work to promote environmental consciousness and oppose large good deeds.

That was then; this is now. He seems to have changed, in many ways, and not for the better. Hes hardly the only person who has gotten worse much worse over the years. Sadly, the debasement of lofty principles and the degradation of the discourse is a trend.

Still, Ive seen few media drill-downs into his core beliefs, or detailed scrutiny of the claims hes made that are either scientifically dicey or simply false which has thus far been my principal focus.

And theres something else I havent yet seen: a rumination on what it would actually be like if he, against all odds, actually won. What would a Robert F. Kennedy presidency look like based on his public positions and statements over the years, and on the apparent mindsets and beliefs of a vocal segment of his backers?

What kind of people would he listen to? What kind would he appoint?

Answering that requires some sense of his own grasp of matters at the core of policymaking. Bright as he is, he may not understand science as much as he thinks he does. That may explain why he seemingly takes the word of so-called experts who challenge the establishment, many of whom have been discredited.

And he apparently accepts their own self-serving and outright wrong explanations for why they have been discredited. This goes to the heart of what makes him so untrustworthy as a prospective leader. (More on his health views below.)

Had Kennedy been president during COVID-19, there would have been no serious effort at containment, but rather it would have been allowed to spread until it burned itself out. One assumes that with...

ACLU slammed for tweet defending pedophile and murderer who was executed in Florida "IndyWatch Feed World"

The far-left American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) faced intense backlash on Friday after it defended convicted pedophile and murderer Duane Owen who was executed by the state of Florida. "The state of Florida never provided medically necessary gender-affirming care to Duane Owen causing her enormous suffering," the ACLU claimed, "and violating her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment for the more than 30 years she was in state custody." Owen's lawyers tried to get him taken off death row by claiming that he was insane, which the state Supreme Court rejected. They also claimed that he was a delusional schizophrenic and was transgender. Expert psychiatrists testified that Owen showed no signs of either of the mental illnesses schizophrenia and gender dysphoria, according to CBS News. The report said that the psychiatrists believed that it was an "act." Owen was sentenced to death for raping and stabbing a 14-year-old to death and raping a 38-year-old, who he beat...

How the Memory of the 60s Civil Rights Era Is Being Co-Opted "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In this special Juneteenth edition of the WhoWhatWhy podcast we talk with Hajar Yazdiha, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Southern California and author of The Struggle for the Peoples King: How Politics Transforms the Memory of the Civil Rights Movement.

Yazdiha provides examples of how various movements, including those on the far right, have manipulated the symbols and rhetoric of the civil rights era to advance their own agendas.

Yazdiha argues that this manipulation dilutes the impact of the original civil rights struggle. She highlights how some groups, portraying themselves counter-factually as oppressed minorities, use the legacy of civil rights to justify their positions, thereby distorting the original purpose of the movement.

In underscoring the dangers of this co-optation, Yazdiha emphasizes that these are not mere rhetorical blunders but intentional strategies with a long history. She explains how these strategies are even used to claim that figures like Martin Luther King Jr. would have opposed movements such as Black Lives Matter or legislation like affirmative action.

She draws parallels between the commemoration of Juneteenth and the King holiday, cautioning against the risk of whitewashing the complexity and radical history of these events.

Its no surprise, Yazdiha says, that Black communities have been leading the fight against revisionist misuses of our collective memory.

Using Sonar To Measure Traffic Speeds "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

One of the most common ways of measuring the speed of a vehicle is by using radar, which typically involves generating radio waves, directing them at a moving vehicle, and measuring the various ways that they return to the device. This is a tried-and-true method, but can be expensive and technically complex. [GeeDub] wanted an easier way of measuring vehicles passing by his home, so he switched to using sonar instead to measure speeds based on the sounds the cars generate themselves.

The method he is using is similar to passive sonar in submarines, which can locate objects underwater based on the sounds they produce. After a false start attempting to measure Doppler shift, he switched to time correlation using two microphones, essentially using stereo audio input to detect subtle differences in arrival times of various sounds to detect the positions of passing vehicles. Doing this fast enough and extrapolating the data gathered, speed information can be calculated. For the data gathering and calculation, [GeeDub] is using a Raspberry Pi to help keep costs down, and some further configuration of the microphones and their power supplies were also needed to ensure quality audio was gathered.

With the system in place in a window, it detected around 9,000 vehicles over a three-day period. The software generates a n...

GOP Senators Would Rather Keep Their Views on Trump a Secret "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The first rule of Fight Club is: You dont talk about Fight Club. Slightly amended, this signature line from the classic movie also applies to most Senate Republicans and former President Donald Trump. Theyd rather not talk about him at all and the DC media lets them get away with it.

Perhaps the best example is the recent indictment of Trump for violating the Espionage Act. Now, that certainly seems like something US senators should have an opinion about. After all, no former president has ever been indicted on federal charges, and the crimes Trump is accused of in a very detailed document are quite serious.

And, of course, Trump and his supporters believe that this constitutes a weaponization of the federal judiciary, which also seems like the kind of thing a US senator would be interested in.

But, no, most of them would rather say nothing at all first and foremost Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Some do, of course, like the members of the performative outrage caucus, consisting of people like Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO), and the why-are-they-even-senators caucus, which includes Sens. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). Those guys obviously have opinions and they are pretty sure this is all a witch hunt.

On the other side, you have a few Republicans who are openly fed up with Trump, such as Sens. Mitt Romney (UT) and Lisa Murkowski (AK). They acknowledged that the charges are quite serious and cannot be casually dismissed (Murkowski) and that Trump brought these charges upon himself by not only taking classified documents, but by refusing to simply return them when given numerous opportunities to do so (Romney).

The strategy of most of the other Republican senators, however, was to stay quiet in the immediate aftermath, and then trust that the congressional press corps would move on, which it did.

Initially, several of them said that they hadnt even bothered to read the indictment. Which sounds like a pretty lame excuse.

It seems like every Republican senator should know what is in a truly historic document that affects the likely nominee of their party.

And the indictment is a mere 49 pages long and an entertaining read so its not like its a Tolstoy novel.

The truth is that most of them probably did; they just dont want to talk about it. Privately, most Republican senators probably just want Trump to disappear somehow, which is not a strategy that has worke...

For 100 Years, Low-Income Americans Overpay on Property Taxes, While the Richest Underpay "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Unsplash/Adam Nir.)

In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes, Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in 1789. Another certainty, seemingly, is questionable tax fairness. Dating back to the 1800s, researchers in the U.S. have challenged the property tax system. Over a hundred years ago, they discovered the richest get a "discount" on their taxes, while the poorest are overcharged. Although concerns have been raised throughout the century, this phenomenon still occurs throughout the U.S. today. As The New York Times said in 2021, low-income Americans are getting cheated on their property taxes.

In 1873, New York assessors inspected over 800 local property assessors and supervisors. They found what University of Chicago researchers found just a couple of years ago: Because of underassessments, homeowners of high-priced homes pay less than they should in property taxes. And through overassessments, homeowners of low-priced homes pay more than they should. Across the nation, this totals up to billions of dollars that low-income homeowners are overpaying, and billions the richest are saving. In Buncombe County, North Carolina, the richest homeowners saved $46 million because of underassessments in 2021.

High-income homeowners are being asked to pay only 55% of the taxes that they should based on the sale price of their home, said Joe Minicozzi, principal of data analytics firm Urban3. Tha...

Ethiopia-Lebanon labour agreement contains little protection for domestic workers

Ethiopian domestic workers who were dismissed by their employers gather with their belongings outside their countrys embassy in Hazmiyeh, east of Beirut, on 24 June 2020 (AFP)

A recent bilateral labour agreement signed by Ethiopia and Lebanon contains no minimum salary requirements and offers scant legal protection for hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian workers in the country, Middle East Eye can reveal.

The agreement, which was signed in April but never made public, received positive coverage in Lebanese and Ethiopian media at the time.

Among the main things included in the agreement, a meaningful raise in worker salaries, freedom of movement, annual leave, healthcare and interaction with family, Muferiat Kamil, Ethiopias labour and skills minister, wrote on her Facebook page in April.

But a 12-page draft of the agreement and an accompanying eight-page worker contract, obtained and authenticated by MEE, casts doubt on its effectiveness to protect workers.

The agreement does not include a minimum wage, relies on Lebanese laws which do not apply to migrant workers, and could open the way for passport confiscation.

Polar bears survived 1,600 years of ice-free summers in the early Holocene, new evidence suggests "IndyWatch Feed World"

New evidence indicates that Arctic areas with the thickest ice today probably melted out every year during the summer for about 1,600 years during the early Holocene (ca. 11.3-9.7k years ago), making the Arctic virtually ice-free. As I argue in my new book, this means that polar bears and other Arctic species are capable of surviving extended periods with ice-free summers: otherwise, they would not be alive today. Money quote: Here we show marine proxy evidence for the disappearance of perennial sea-ice in the southern Lincoln Sea during the Early Holocene, which suggests a widespread transition to seasonal sea-ice in the Arctic Ocean. The pandemic pause on federal student loan payments is coming to an end. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is set to rule on forgiveness.

Many Americans will see their monthly expenses shoot up this fall. Thats when the pause on federal student loan interest and payments will expire. The pause was implemented in 2020 as the pandemic and its negative economic effects swept across America. The hope was that by freezing federal student loan payments and interest, Americans would be on slightly better financial footing as economic uncertainty loomed.

Climate change, human pressures push Bangladeshs national fish into decline "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Considering the importance of hilsa fish in the countrys dietary needs, economy, and the livelihood of fishermen, Bangladesh has long made several conservation attempts to increase the population of the fish. Most of these attempts have been a success. However, in recent years, fishermen are experiencing smaller catch on their usual route even after the three-week bans twice a year for the protection of the fishs spawn. Abdul Gaffar Majhi, a fisherman in the coastal district of Patuakhali in Bangladesh, has fished the Rabnabad Channel for the past two decades. He says he can still remember the first time he caught a huge hilsa fish there. But that was years ago, and he says he hasnt seen any hilsa recently in this channel or any of the nearby rivers. Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) is far and away the most important fish in Bangladesh, as a key source of both nutrition and livelihood for millions. And while the government has invested heavily in its conservation in an attempt to boost production, fishers here continue to report declining catches. Angela Wright became the principal of Fairfield Court Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia, in the fall of 2020, but she didnt meet her students until a year later. At the start of the pandemic, Richmond had moved all of its 22,000 students to remote learning. By the time they returned to the classroom, in September 2021, after every other school district in the state, it had been 18 months since theyd been inside a school building.

For Wright, the posting at Fairfield Court was the culmination of a steady rise: from instructional assistant to teacher to assistant principal to principal. When her father saw her first monthly paycheck as a teacher, he asked, Is this for a week? He said, Are you sure this is what you want to do? she recalled. I said, Yes. When you see kids light up, when you see that they get it, when you see kids who were tier three or lower rise to the top ...

Wright had previously been a principal in a rural school district, but after arriving in the Richmond system she settled for being an assistant principal for a few years. Coming into an urban school district, I wanted to step back and take a look at their structure, their processes, she said. Now she was eager to tackle the challenges facing the student body, which was almost entirely Black. Many of the students lived in an adjoining public-housing development, also called Fairfield Court. But Wright, in her first year, could offer guidance only at a remove. She dropped in on virtual classrooms, where students logged on from their beds or from crowded kitchen tables; often, they were not able to log on at all, because the concrete walls of their home interfered with a Wi-Fi signal. Sometimes it was just, Oh, its not working today, she told me.

When the students returned to the school building, Wright found that their needs were far greater than she could have imagined. Research released by Harvard and Stanford last fall found that Richmonds fourth through eighth graders had lost two full years of ground in math a...

Nine suspected people smugglers accused of piloting the fishing trawler that sank off the coast of Greece last week are expected to appear in a Greek court on Monday, as authorities in Athens face further criticism of their handling of the disaster.

Between 400 and 750 people are thought to have been onboard the vessel, which sank in one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Pylos on 14 June.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said the disaster could be the second deadliest refugee and migrant shipwreck ever recorded, with more than 500 people, including at least 100 children, believed missing.

Greek authorities said that 78 dead and 104 survivors - mostly from Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt and Pakistan - were brought ashore.

But survivors of the shipwreck have accused the Greek coastguard of ignoring their pleas for help, leading to the loss of many more lives.

iPhone maker Foxconn to switch to cars as US-China ties sour:

iPhone maker Foxconn is betting big on electric cars and redrawing some of its supply chains as it navigates a new era of icy Washington-Beijing relations.

In an exclusive interview, chairman and boss Young Liu told the BBC what the future may hold for the Taiwanese firm.

[...] "Look at this - this is a big iPhone, so we're very familiar with this," he said, pointing to a panel that controlled the car he had taken us for a drive in. Built for families and priced for an aspiring global middle class, the shiny white SUV is one of several models manufactured by Foxconn.

"The reason why we think this is a great opportunity for us is that with the traditional gas engine, you have engines which are mostly mechanical. But with EVs, it's batteries and motors," he explains. That is a familiar language for a technology company like Foxconn, he added.

LAGOS JUNE 19TH (URHOBOTODAY)-One Austin Ejovwo has become a fugitive after allegedly killing his lover, Felicia Akpomeria, in Delta state.

Ejovwo is the forrmer Vice Chairman of Okolor Inland community, Udu Local Government Area, Delta State

The deceased, 45-year-old Felicia, a single mother of four was found in the lovers bedroom apartment in her pool of blood.

The incident, which has already severed relationship and spurred tension between Ubogo (the victims community) and Okolor inland (the suspects community), happened Friday afternoon.

Delta Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident in a text message.
Ubogo woman was found dead in her own pool of blood on the bed of her ex-husband, Edafe said.

The incident has plunged the victims relations at Ubogo community into grief and pain, Vanguard reports.

According to the victims elder relation, Godwin Laya, Felicia was aged 45 with four children, three girls and a boy from her failed marriage before meeting the suspect. She was the only child of her father, the aged mother is alive.
Felicia was called by Austin to come over to Okolor on Thursday evening. On Friday afternoon, we got a call from Okolor that Austin has killed Felicia.

So, I sent two emissaries, when they returned and confirm the report, I and others joined them and we went over there.

On getting there, we found Police from Ovwian already removing her corpse in an ambulance and they invited us over to the station. Felicia daughter and others have made statements.

We were told that when neighbours didnt hear from Austin on Friday morning, they decided to check his door and discovered he left at night, so, they went to the back window and peeped, from there they saw Felicia in her pool of blood.

This led them to raise alarm and the door was broken down. On getting to the room, several fetish and idols worshipping paraphernalia littered the floor. Felicia fully naked corpse was rested on a corner.

Several machete cuts were seen at the back of her head and chest. We dont know whether any organ was removed because she was covered in blood.

Qatar and the United Arab Emirates said on Monday they had resumed diplomatic ties after six years and were reopening respective embassies with immediate effect.

The UAE foreign ministry said the move was done based on the keenness of the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations and the al-Ula Agreement, which was signed in Saudi Arabia in 2021 by the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council to ease years of tensions.

Qatar, meanwhile, said its foreign minister and prime minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, spoke to his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed on Monday as the two states reopened their diplomatic missions. Qatar's consulate in Dubai is also reopening.

In 2017, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain cut all ties with Qatar and enforced a stringent boycott following disagreements over foreign policy. The boycotting states accused Doha of sponsoring terrorism, a charge the Qataris denied.

In recent years, however, the Middle East has witnessed a wide regional reconciliation process, with Saudi Arabia and Egypt resuming relations with Qatar in 2021.

The Importance of Home Safes and Why You Need One "IndyWatch Feed World"

Safeguarding your valuables from damage or theft, damage by fire or water gives you immeasurable peace of mind. A physical home safe is the perfect way to ensure your valuables remain safe. They are emerging as an indispensable asset for every household, so you need to understand their importance, the different types of home safes, and why you need one.

Types of Home Safes

Source: brinkshome.com

Although safes are primarily associated with hotels or banks, installing them in your home will also help secure your valuable possessions. Depending on your needs, David Anber can assist you in choosing from the different types of safes available. Here are the different types of safes.

Fireproof Safes

Home fires can occur anytime, but due to the quick response by the local fire department, the fire doesnt burn for long. Installing a fireproof safe ensures the valuables inside arent damaged, no matter how long the fire takes. The ideal home safe can last 60 minutes in a fire of about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Burglarproof Safes

Burglarproof safes are meant to keep valuable belongings like expensive jewelry from theft and are fixed to the wall or floor to ensure theyre immovable. These safes attached to the wall or floor are mainly used to protect documents.

Floor safes are fixed to the floor and are immovable. However, the downside of contact with the floor is that it can rust over time, but there are ways to control the damage. Thanks to their heaviness, wall safes can be a standalone instead of fitting to the wall and are guarded with a digital or manual lock.

Gun Safes

Gun safes are a must for anyone who owns a weapon. They have different locking mechanisms that range from the typical lock dial, a keypad, or a fingerprint to open or access. Gun safes keep your weapons safe from fatal accidents, damage, or theft and are mostly water and fire-resistant. The safe you purchase will depend on the size of your weapons.

Waterproof Safes

Waterproof safes are made from durable ste...

Showing paramilitaries the exit door "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Recent weeks have seen a rise in concern about the continuing presence of paramilitaries in our society. Just how we make faster progress in removing them is the question considered in the latest Holywell Conversations podcast.

Clearly, 25 years ago when the Good Friday Agreement was approved by the public, they would have expected paramilitaries to have been fully or largely removed from our society by now. Yet we still see significant activity by both loyalist and republican groups.

Should we, though, as chief executive of Co-operation Ireland and former senior PSNI and RUC officer Peter Sheridan suggests, refer to some of the groups simply as organised crime gangs? Would that reflect more accurately where our society is in comparison to those places in Dublin, London and the United States, for example, which are also burdened by drug-related criminality?

Given that paramilitaries exercise coercive control over communities, with territories marked out by flags, is effective regulation and policing of the use of flags an essential element in asserting dominance over paramilitary groups? This is an approach favoured by Professor Dominic Bryan, who was joint chair of the commission on Flags, Identity, Culture and Tradition. And why is that commissions report, as Bryan puts it, sitting on shelves gathering dust, rather than being implemented?

Despite this sense of negativity, we should reflect on the progress achieved, especially since the Fresh Start Agreement of 2015, which identified the need to end paramilitarism once and for all. It established the Independent Reporting Commission to focus on this.

The trend since then has been downward, though it rose again in the last year. In the 12 months ending 31st May, there was one security-related death; seven bombings; 33 shootings; and 32 casualties of paramilitary assaults.

Tackling paramilitary criminality is handled jointly by the PSNI, An Garda Sochna, HMRC, the National Crime Agency and the security services. It is the approach of the PSNI, in particular, that has been questioned, with critics suggesting that heavy-handed policing undermines acceptance of the PSNI in poorer communities and has led to greater support for paramilitaries.

These complaints grew in recent days with the arrest in public sight of a health care worker in Derry, with very public comments about the arrest from the PSNI. This led to strong criticisms of the police from her solicitors, Madden and Finnucane.

The firm stated that to arrest a woman with no criminal record, from her place of work where she is a well respected health care professional wholly unconnected to criminality of any kind, and to then denigrate her good name in the most egregious way, is to be condemned and depl...

Diicot cybercrime gang expands its attack capabilities "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers found evidence that Diicot threat actors are expanding their capabilities with new payloads and the Cayosin Botnet.

Cado researchers recently detected an interesting attack pattern linked to an emerging cybercrime group tracked as Diicot (formerly, Mexals) and described in analyses published by Akamai and Bitdefender.

The experts discovered several payloads, some of which were not publicly known, that are being used as part of a new ongoing campaign.

Evidence collected by Cado suggests the deployment of a botnet having DDoS capabilities.

The use of the name Diicot, which is also the name of a Romanian organized crime and anti-terrorism policing unit, and the presence of Romanian-language strings and log statements in the payloads suggests that the group could be based in Romania.

The Diicot cybercrime group has traditionally been associated with cryptojacking campaigns, but Cado Labs observed the group deploying the off-the-shelf Mirai-based bot known as Cayosin. The Cayosin bot employed in the attacks observed by Cado targeted routers running the Linux-based embedded devices operating system OpenWrt

The group has distinctive TTPs such as the heavy use of the (using a header modified with the bytes 0x59545399) to prevent unpacking via the standard command (upx -d c).

Diicot heavily used Discord for C2, the platform supports HTTP POST requests to a webhook URL, allowing exfiltrated data and campaign statistics to be viewed within a given channel. Cado identified four distinct channels used in this campaign.

Diicot campaigns generally involve a long execution chain, with individual payloads and their outputs forming interdependent relationships. shc executables are typically used as loaders and prepare the system for mining via Diicots custom fork of XMRig, along with registering persistence. reads the report published by Cado. Executables written in Golang tend to be dedicated to scanning, brute-forcing and propagation, and a fork of the zmap i...

FLASHBACK: America's Republic: How the great experiment came about (and how we keep it) "IndyWatch Feed World"

I am an economist and a historian, not a lawyer nor a politician nor a constitutional scholar, but I revere America's founding documents and the people who crafted them. In the long struggle of men and women against tyranny, what that generation accomplished stands without comparable precedent. Judge Them within Context As we survey what they did, I caution you from the outset to avoid the sin of intertemporal bigotry judging those of the late 18th Century by standards and conventions of the early 21st. This ought to be seen as fair and commonsensical, yet I see people commit that sin all the time. The more extreme say, "Thomas Jefferson was a bad man and shouldn't be listened to because he owned slaves," for instance. The Pre-play Attack in Real Life "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Recently I was contacted by a Falklands veteran who was a victim of what appears to have been a classic pre-play attack; his story is told here.

Almost ten years ago, after we wrote a paper on the pre-play attack, we were contacted by a Scottish sailor whod bought a drink in a bar in Las Ramblas in Barcelona for 33, and found the following morning that hed been charged 33,000 instead. The bar had submitted ten transactions an hour apart for 3,300 each, and when we got the transaction logs it turned out that these transactions had been submitted through three different banks. Whats more, although the transactions came from the same terminal ID, they had different terminal characteristics. When the sailors lawyer pointed this out to Lloyds Bank, they grudgingly accepted that it had been technical fraud and refunded the money.

In the years since then, Ive used this as a teaching example both in tutorial talks and in university lectures. A payment card user has no trustworthy user interface, so the PIN entry device can present any transaction, or series of transactions, for authentication, and the customer is none the wiser. The mere fact that a customers card authenticated a transaction does not imply that the customer mandated that payment.

Payment by phone should eventually fix this, but meantime the frauds continue. Theyre particularly common in nightlife establishments, both here and overseas. In the first big British case, the Spearmint Rhino in Bournemouth had special conditions attached to its license for some time after a series of frauds; a second case affected a similar establishment in Soho; there have be...

Ukrainians Surrender En masse To Save Their Lives. Military Summary And Analysis For 2023.06.18 "IndyWatch Feed War"

Introduction June 18, 2023

Readers may have noticed that weve heard little about Ukraines counteroffensive from the Western MSM in recent days. Thats not because nothing is happening. On the contrary there has been heavy fighting.

However, according to Military Summary the Ukrainians have gained little ground, and where they have made headway theyve paid a heavy price with hundreds of men killed and dozens of tanks lost.

To avoid this senseless slaughter many Ukrainian conscripts are surrendering and one can hardly blame them.

After all, many young Ukrainian conscripts are being sent to the front line with only a few days of basic military training. That is nowhere near enough to prepare these youngsters for the horrors that await them.

Whats more the conflict never need have come this far.

For in March 2022 Ukraine reportedly signed a peace deal with Moscow. In keeping with the terms of the deal, the Russians halted their advance on Kiev and retraced their steps to eastern Ukraine.

According to veteran U.S. diplomat Fiona Hill and Professor Angela Stent writing in Foreign Affairs, by April 2022 Russia and Ukraine had tentatively agreed the terms of a peace deal  The World Putin Wants Foreign Affairs Sept/Oct 2022.

However, before the peace deal could be implemented, and no doubt under pressure from the West, Ukraine reneged on the agreement.

Readers may recall that Boris Johnson made a sudden surprise visit to Kiev in April 2022. It was only after Johnsons visit that Ukraine went back on its agreement with Moscow.

We can only assume that the Western overlords ordered Britains then prime minister to go to Kiev in person to warn Zelensky to renege on the peace deal. As a result hundreds of thousands more Ukrainians have been killed or maimed and the war continues to this day.

That is why we cant blame Ukrainians for surrendering. In the end analysis they are not fighting for peace or even for Ukraine. Ukrainian conscripts are fighting, and dying as proxies for the Western overlords in their campaign against Russia. Ed.

NATOs Luftwaffe More Than an Echo of Nazi Operation Barbarossa "IndyWatch Feed War"

Finian Cunningham Strategic Review June 15, 2023

The NATO military alliance holds its largest-ever air force maneuvers since the bloc was formed 74 years ago. From June 12-23, the German Luftwaffe will lead the massive mobilization across the Baltic territories and Central Europe in an undisguised provocation to Russia.

The United States will deploy the most warplanes out of the 25 participating NATO partners. But Germany is the lead nation for the drills.

Whats even more provocative, the date for the so-called Air Defender 23 exercises falls on the 82nd anniversary of Operation Barbarossa. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany and its Axis allies launched the biggest military invasion in history, against the Soviet Union. That invasion turned out to be a military disaster for Germany, heralding its historic defeat nearly four years later, along with horrific suffering and millions of deaths.

Its not just the dates that provide an uncannily grim echo. The sinister symbolism today of the German balkenkreuz (Teutonic cross) emblazoned on warplanes flying close to Russias border is reinforced by the participation of many of the Third Reichs former Axis allies in the present day. Finland and the Baltic territories were the staging post for Hitlers master plan to conquer Russia and carry out its Final Solution of genocidal extermination.

Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, German Leopard tanks also bearing the balkenkreuz are today pounding Russian forces from Ukrainian territory, which also served as the invasion path for Operation Barbarossa. So far, many of these modern German tanks have been destroyed in todays battles, which does not bode well for NATOs sponsored Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Of course, Air Defender 23 pales by comparison of scale with 1941. NATOs warplanes flying in exercises over Germany and the Baltics number 250 with a total military personnel of 10,000 taking part. In Operation Barbarossa, the number of aircraft was at least 10-fold greater and involved up to 4 million ancillary soldiers. Nevertheless, the symbolism is conspicuous and staggering for anyone with a keen sense of history. Amazingly, no Western media have made any historical reference to Barbarossa, not even in brief passing. Then again, thats not that amazing when you consider the Western medias role is to propagandize this war against Russia.

And its not simply a mere symbolic historic echo, appalling though that is of itself. The NATO leaders are increasingly openly talking about the objective of crushing Russia. The air mobilization over the next fortnight is billed as rehearsing offensive scenarios against Russia.

The timing of the NATO-sponsored ground offensive beginning last week in Ukraine in conjunction with the unprecedented deployment of air power this week has the hallmarks of a...

Everything has a historical context in Israel. If you look at why we arent at a two-state solution, which everyone now says they want, but both in 1947-1948, and again in 2001, it was the Palestinian leadership who walked away from a two-state solution and pledged itself to the destruction of the Jewish people, Kennedy said.

Thats a very, very clear history and at a time when they had a very, very generous solution on the table. Now, the other thing I say is, Israel is a democracy but a flawed democracy just like the United States. But if I was a dissident Arab, Palestinian, would I rather be a dissident in Israel or in Saudi Arabia or Oman or Qatar or any other Arab nation? he asked.

Kennedy stressed that on all these issues if youre gay, for example, you can be killed for that. Israel is the only place [in the Middle East] where you have freedom. If youre a transvestite or have any other kinds of dissident views, youd much rather be in Israel.

He added that Israel is also held to a double standard regarding whether it takes proper precautions in avoiding civilian casualties. Israel is going to the West Bank and killing children its never doing that deliberately, never, and nobody has ever said it is, he said. He accused Israels Arab neighbors of having a deliberate policy to attack and target civilians and to kill them.

Lavrov: When the Ukraine Conflict Ends, Globalism Will End "IndyWatch Feed War"

Andrew Anglin The Unz Review June 17, 2023

I know Ive said it six million times, but the Ukraine war on the ground is virtually irrelevant in comparison to the effects of the Ukraine war on geopolitics.

It would have mattered if Russia could have lost, but they cant lose. The critics are now saying they are winning too slowly, but even if that weird claim were true, it is irrelevant.

Last week, a very big development happened: China sent armored trucks to Chechnya.

I had asserted from the beginning that China would not let Russia lose the war, because China cannot afford to have Russia fall to the West.

Several well-known right-wing commentators were saying that China would never commit material to Russias war effort, even whilst theyve already committed in full to propping up Russias economy. They were wrong and I was right (as usual).

I dont even bother to follow the day-to-day of the war. Its too autistic. And it does not matter.

What matters is that because the US started this psycho war on purpose, then used it as an excuse to try to collapse the government of Russia through sanctions, the whole world is in the process of cutting ties to the Americans.

It was pure hubris that led the US to think they could use the Ukraine as a battering ram to bring down the Russian state. This will be the downfall of the Anal Empire.

All the things that I said would happen are happening.

It would be too much to say that the Russians planned it this way. Clearly, they did not. We can see from the initial invasion that Putin and Lavrov assumed that the US would negotiate. Anyone who suggests that the Russians are so stupid they believed they could conquer a nation of 40 million people with 150,000 soldiers is just lying to you. The initial invasion was obviously a negotiation tactic.

What they ended up with the whole world on their side, and a lead role in the new world order is more than they could have ever hoped for.

It was a perfect...

'Silent' killer in cholesterol more firmly linked to heart disease? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

what we still do not have is a good biological pathway that gives us so called bad cholesterol and statins are not surviving the test of time.

what i do know is that independent of all this ,is that we all suffer from low level scurvy which can be countered by a daily heaping teaspoon of ascorbic acid or vitimin C.  As per Linus Pauling who turmed a bad prognosis at age 48 into a full life through 92.  my own prognosis was also equally bad after my own heart attack at age 57.  the last looksee five years ago showed zero new inflamation and all old scaring just that.  And i do expect to see 100 with a healthy circulatory system.

otherwise, i would like to have far better answers than any of this  which assumes the association is significant when it may well not be.  Far too often meta stats throw up indications that are simply that and certainly no proof of causation..

Over-the-counter antihistamine repairs nerve damage caused by MS "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This is an unexpected discovery.  what this means is that it can be safely applied at safe levels and should be particularly beneficial with early onset cases..

We even now have testing protocols as well

all this means that with just this, we should be able to mitigate all victims to at least some degree, and perhaps even sharply reduce the number of victims before we are finished.  great news on this disease.

A new study has found direct evidence that an over-the-counter antihistamine can repair the nerve sheath damaged in people with multiple sclerosis

A new study has found direct evidence that an over-the-counter antihistamine can repair the protective nerve sheath thats damaged in people with multiple sclerosis. The researchers also identified a biomarker that can be used to measure the drugs effectiveness, opening the door to a potential new treatment for the debilitating disease.

In the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS), the bodys immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath that covers nerves, causing irreversible damage and disrupting communication between

The goal of any MS treatment is to reverse demyelination, which would return proper nerve function and reduce or prevent long-term disability. Rather than reversing the...

Meat's damaged DNA damages your own to raise cancer risk, says study "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This is interesting. The long term effects of cooked food has obviously never been closely investigated.

and we have about a million years of actual practise for both methods.  so yes it would be nice to fully understand longterm implications, if any.

Our body is quite able to process low level of natural toxins and send them on their way.   Otherwise we would have never madse it.  i also add, it likely performs best if it is often tested.  so we really need to do our homework here.

best practise for all of us is ample variety and spacing as well.  a single staple eaten daily is a poor idea.  better yet ,eaten weekly allows any toxins to be digested and neutralized.  think alcohol in particular.

9 Astounding Facts That Prove the Moon is Artificial Why Is It There? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

An interesting piece that does not even mention that the Moon happens to be hollow.  in fact i have posted extensively on this topic once i came to the same conclusion.  This happens to be another perspective and have at it,.

What is important to know is that the Moon is simply too perfect to be other than a totally manufactured product which also means it is a gravity machine particularly and also quite able to traverse space and even pop through a self induced wormhole to another star system and also TIME as well.  Pretty awsome really.

now understand what i think happened and also understand that we are living bwith the consequences.  My conjecture is that the Moon arrived here some 200,000 years ago.  Terra looked just like Venus.  Venus may have not existed then as well.  The moon then plunged down into the earths Gravity well and also plunged back in time a billion years or so.  It then used its gravity control to pell a layer of our crust off to form the Pacific basin which is over half of the available crust.

it then moved out to its current orbit to essentially monitor events.  It has been there since, but been able to make orbital adjustments any time just like death star, it could optimize it all.  Obviously hte insertion of life could be managed along with hundreds of millions of evolution.  water itself likely came out of the rocks themselves and if our hollow earth conjecture holds, then also from inside the inner surface.  Right now we do not know, but we do know that we really do not need incoming comets.

This may also hold true for Venus as well and that may mean cracking that shell could flood the surface of Venus.  they need their own Moon obviously.  this thought also suggests that the manufactured Moon may even have been made up out by Jupiter without ever going through a worm hole.  quite the engineering project.

I do find it instructive that the problem is becoming easier as we progress..

Every Human Being is Dealing With or Not Dealing With or Entirely Ignorant of The Same Force. "IndyWatch Feed War"

Visible Origami June 16, 2023

God Poet Transmitting.

I had an experience yesterday morning that almost turned it upside down for me. As I was logging into my computer I saw something I had not seen before, and in a moment of disconnect, I clicked it previous to logging on and it immediately started to install Windows 11, (or so I was led to believe) which I did not want. I didnt want Windows 10 either, but knowing I could use a Windows 7 Shell, I got 10 when support for 7 ended.

Anyway, I could not stop this thing and the next thing I knew, (It was only a few minutes) my desktop was changed. My Documents was empty, as was Downloads, and I guess much of the rest of what I use each day, and I did not have my two Notepad HTML files which are always on the desktop.

This was early before 6 AM and I did all sorts of things including a System Restore. Nothing worked, and I kept getting error messages. It didnt make sense, and I am not a computer Luddite.

I am set to meditate before 7AM as The Sun is rising. I went and sat in my meditation chair but could not meditate. Before going out there was this discomfort and pressing anxiety. I could not understand it. I KNEW none of this matters. I knew it would be fixed, but the agitation was constant. I managed it without reacting.

I called my fix-it computer guy and he came over around noon. Instantly he located the problem and all was exactly as it had been. I had created another User ID and that was a kind of clear slate that didnt recognize what the main.. previous User had going on. It never even occurred to me that such a thing could happen. Note the word User. (grin) A sign of the times of Material Darkness and selfish intent.

The reason I write about it has to do with those emotional winds blowing through me the discomfort and anxiety for which I got no answers at the time. I wasnt personally feeling any of this. It was just passing through me, though I was free to identify with it if I chose to. I could let the wavy vibrations translate into Wrath if I wanted them to, or I could just let them go. Once you are established in this understanding in a visceral sense, your whole world will change.

Later in the day, I was told it was during moments like this that these subconscious forces were being bled out of me provided that I allowed it. The Temperance card came instantly into my mind. Its quality is Wrath. That has to do with the wavy vibration of the angel pouring forth the neutralizing agents upon The Lion and The Eagle; Leo and Scorpio.

The Eagle is the sexual force transformed into spiritual vision. Otherwise, you get the scorpion, with the stinger poised above itself. Sex is life and form-giving. It is also death-dealing to lif...

Tree islands boost diversity in oil palm plantations, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Planting clusters of native trees in oil palm plantations can boost biodiversity without sacrificing yields, according to a new study. Researchers say the findings from an experimental project on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, published in the journal Nature, could be implemented by the industry to provide refuge for a range of species.   By planting these tree islands, we can see that diversity of multiple groups, from soil bacteria to birds and bats, increase, Delphine Clara Zemp, first author on the paper and the head of the Conservation Biology Lab at the University of Neuchtel in Switzerland, told Mongabay in an interview. Having tree islands in the matrix of oil palm, which is a harsh environment, could potentially facilitate the movement of species in this landscape. Researchers planted 52 tree islands of varying sizes (between 25 and 1,600 square meters, or 270 and 17,200 square feet) within plantations on Sumatra. They found that biodiversity and ecosystem functioning improved within five years. Larger patches provided greater benefits for species such as birds and bats. Image courtesy of Gustavo Paterno. The international team, led by researchers at the University of Gttingen in Germany, also noted that tree islands improved ecosystem functioning, impacting water regulation, nutrient cycling and pollination. We found that there are also significant enhancements in our tree islands compared to conventional palm plantations, Zemp said, adding that in terms of the size of the tree islands, the results showed that larger patches are better for biodiversity. The Palestinian health ministry also reported that a 15-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli forces and was transferred to Jenin Government Hospital. She is said to be in critical condition.

At least eight Israeli soldiers were reportedly wounded, some of them seriously, according to Palestinian news site Arab48 and Israeli newspaper Haaretz, though this has not been confirmed by Israel.

Jenin has been a regular target of Israeli assaults in the West Bank over the last year.

Early on Monday, a large number of Israeli forces stormed the city in the northern West Ban...
