West Suburban Peace Coalition Deconstructs the U.S.s 835 Overseas Military Bases at May 16 Educational Forum "IndyWatch Feed War"

World BEYOND Wars Technology Directory Marc Eliot Stein gave a stunning presentation on Americas massive web of worldwide military bases last night via Zoom. Eliot Stein displayed his amazing digital presentation showing these installations on every continent. The map zoomed in to show the actual base, while providing information regarding its size, number of staff and year created.

His talk discussed why we have so many bases, how we accumulated such a massive reach just about everywhere except within our imagined enemies, and the devastating danger that ringing those so called enemies with offensive resources may easily spiral into nuclear war.

Besides used for potential and current US military operations, our bases contribute to local unrest by nearby residents, pollution and criminal activity which is endemic wherever military personnel are stationed.

One could say the US bases are overseas are like a worldwide Roach Motel. Anywhere the US intervenes, its likely they will never leave. That is why so many bases display the origin year of 1945. Just ask the folks in Okinawa, South Korea, Germany, and Austria among others.

Its interesting that while the locals near these bases periodically protest their presence, the home governments love the money America lavishes on their economy. When Trump, in a fit of pique against Germany, decided to pull 30,000 troops from our 78 year old bases there, German pols howled in protest. Congress followed suit and those soldiers stayed put in their German Roach Motel.

Then there is Finland, who joined NATO last month. It was not to protect against a Russian invasion. In their best Jerry McGuire imitation, Finlands leaders screamed Show me the (US defense) money. Yep. US and Finnish officials already in talks to plant US bases there.

To see why the US military budget is approaching a trillion bucks a year, check out this digital display that shows how our precious tax dollars are being squandered to promote US worldwide dominance.a...

Studies show oyster reef restoration can work out well given enough time "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Research has shown that oyster restoration projects in the U.S. have been largely successful, but ecosystem benefits may take decades to fully emerge. In a study published in Conservation Biology, scientists synthesized data on the restoration of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs in the U.S. They found that such projects improved the local ecosystem by increasing oyster production by a multiple of 21. Restored oyster reefs also enhanced habitat for fish and shellfish by 34-97% and increased nitrogen cycling by 54-95%, which helps improve water quality. A second study in Ecological Applications, published by two of the same authors, noted that eastern oyster restoration was the most successful in deeper, saltier parts of coastal waters that generate more tidal exchange. It also found that the number and diversity of oysters, fish and shellfish on restoration sites increased over time and that these reefs generally took at least eight years to yield long-term benefits. Oyster restoration refers explicitly to creating new oyster habitat by adding substrate from materials like shell, concrete, limestone or rock or simply adding live oysters to generate reefs in intertidal or subtidal coastal areas. Research has shown that oyster restoration projects in the U.S. have been largely successful, but ecosystem benefits may take decades to fully emerge. Image by Rachel Smith. Both of these studies show that oyster restoration is by and large successful, even if its more successful in certain places, Max Castorani, a co-author of both studies and a marine ecologist at theThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Badminton Inspired Heat Shield Aims to Fly This Year "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Badminton is not a sport that most of us think about often, and extremely rarely outside of every four years at the summer Olympics and maybe at the odd cookout or beach party here or there. But the fact that its a little bit unique made it the prime inspiration for this new heat shield design, which might see a space flight and test as early as a year from now.

The inspiration comes from the shuttlecock, the object which would otherwise be a ball in any other sport. A weighted head, usually rubber or cork, with a set of feathers or feather-like protrusions mounted to it, contributes to its unique flight characteristics when hit with a racquet. The heat shield, called Pridwen and built by Welsh company Space Forge, can be folded before launch and then expanded into this shuttlecock-like shape once ready for re-entry. Its unlikely this will protect astronauts anytime soon, though. The device is mostly intended for returning materials from the Moon or from asteroids, or for landing spacecrafts on celestial bodies with atmospheres like Mars or Venus.

With some testing done already, Space Forge hopes this heat shield will see a space flight before the close of 2023. Thats not the end of the Badminton inspi...

Russian Forces Wipe Out Ukrainian Arms, Ammo Depots with Precision Weapons

Russian combat aircraft shot down a Ukrainian Su-24 frontline bomber near Slavyansk in the Donetsk Peoples Republic, Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov reported

Defense Ministry's Press Service

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. Russian forces hit Kievs large foreign equipment and armament depots and army reserves with seaborne and air-launched precision weapons, destroying substantial weapon and ammunition stockpiles during the special military operation in Ukraine, Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov reported on Thursday.

"Last night, Russian forces delivered multiple strikes by seaborne and air-launched long-range high-precision weapons against large foreign armament and equipment depots and enemy reserves. The goal of the strikes was achieved. All the designated targets were hit. The strikes destroyed considerable stockpiles of the Ukrainian armys armaments and ammunition and thwarted the advance of reserves to the areas of combat operations," the spokesman said.

Russian forces eliminate 60 Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk area

Russian forces destroyed roughly 60 Ukrainian troops, two armored vehicles and a howitzer in the Kupyansk area over the past day, Konashenkov reported.

Combat aircraft and artillery from Russias western battlegroup struck the enemy units in areas near the settlements of Novomlynsk and Kotlyarovka in the Kharkov Region, the spokesman specified.

"The enemys losses in that direction in the past 24 hours totaled 60 Ukrainian personnel, two armored combat vehicles, two motor vehicles and a D-20 howitzer," the general reported.

Units of the Russian armys 138th and 27th motorized infantry brigades neutralized two enemy subversive/reconnaissance groups by their active operations, the spokesman added.

Who is delusional? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Gilbert Doctorow | May 18, 2023

Over the past several months, I have seen the word delusional applied to those, like myself, who bring nonconformist, non-mainstream news and views about Russia and the Ukraine war to the reading public. Language is constantly evolving, and the shop-worn label Putin stooge has now been replaced by this more generalized but similarly derogatory ad hominem labeling.

Allow me then to ask whether it is not the accusers who are truly delusional by insisting on a Washington narrative that is daily being ground into the dirt, as are Germanys Leopard tanks and Americas Patriot air defense systems in Ukraine by technically superior Russian military hardware.

This military come-uppance is a story in itself. I involuntarily think back over a chance meeting I had four years ago with Russian-Americans during a tourist visit I made to a small and picturesque town in the Schwaebisch region of southern Germany with its typical half-timbered houses on the main square. We struck up a conversation while shopping in a souvenir store and this dentist was glowing with pride for his new Fatherland. Somehow the discussion turned to the newly announced strategic weapons systems that the Kremlin claimed had passed testing and were on their way to serial production. The dentist was beside himself with chuckles, insisting that this was all pure fabrication, pure propaganda and that Russia was incapable of designing and manufacturing any weapon system that could pose a threat to the good old USA.

But that ridicule for things Russian is a subject for another day. I will speak here first about the delusional framing and implementation of U.S. foreign policy today that is costing the United States more dearly in prestige and influence globally than anything that Donald Trump and his diamond in the rough Secretary of State Pompeo accomplished during his presidency. And I will direct attention to one face in the vast group portrait of world leaders, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Tokayev is the president of Kazakhstan and in recent months was being courted by the U.S. State Department in the hope and expectation that Kazakhstan could be induced to split with Russia and join the American team of countries sanctioning Moscow over its war of aggression in Ukraine. Indeed, Secretary of State Blinken paid him a visit to woo or threaten him to follow the U.S. lead and this was reported enthusiastically by American mainstream media.

This U.S. policy can only be described as delusional insofar as it takes no cognizance of who is Tokayev and what are the realities of the geopolitical environment of Kazakhstan. The policy is based on willful ignorance of the counselors who formulated it, and that in turn is based on the assumption of Ame...

Can the Global South Build a New World Information and Communication Order? "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Meas Sokhorn (Cambodia), Inverted Sewer, 2014.

It is remarkable how the media in a select few countries is able to set the record on matters around the world. The European and North American countries enjoy a near-global monopoly over information, their media houses vested with a credibility and authority inherited from their status during colonial times (BBC, for instance) as well as their command of the neocolonial structure of our times (CNN, for instance). In the 1950s, the post-colonial nations identified the Wests monopoly over media and information and sought to promote the free flow of ideas by word and by image, as the 1945 Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) put it.

As part of the Non-Aligned Movement, the countries and regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America developed their own national and regional news institutions: in 1958, a UNESCO seminar held in Quito (Ecuador) led to the establishment of a regional school to train journalists and communications professionals in 1960 known as the International Centre of Advanced Communication Studies for Latin America (CIESPAL); in 1961, a meeting held in Bangkok created the...

[$] Page aging with hardware counters "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The memory-management subsystem has the unenviable task of trying to predict which pages of memory will be needed in the near future. Since predictions tend to be difficult, the code relies heavily on the heuristic that memory used in the recent past is likely to be used again in the near future. However, even knowing which memory has been recently used can be a challenge. At the 2023 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory-Management and BPF Summit, Aneesh Kumar and Wei Xu, both presenting remotely, discussed some ways to use the increasingly capable hardware counters that are provided by current and upcoming CPUs.

Our Universe Exists Inside Of A Black Hole Of Higher Dimensional Universe "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This may sound like a science fiction scenario, but some physicists have proposed that this could be the case. In this article, we will explore the idea that our universe may be inside of a black hole, and what implications this would have for our understanding of cosmology and physics.

A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape, not even light. According to Einsteins theory of general relativity, black holes are formed when massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle. The resulting singularity is a point of infinite density and zero volume, where the laws of physics break down.

Scientists discover possible connection between human brain and cosmos on a quantum scale.

Attrition In Action: List Of Ukrainian Army Equipment Not Yet Destroyed By Russia "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans

February 2023 marks one full year of epic struggle on Ukraine's part to preserve its very existence. Rather than succumbing to the invaders beleaguering the country from the North, South and East, it has managed take the initiative in a conflict that was heavily stacked against it. Yet one year also marks the point where the war is beginning to surpass perhaps any conflict since WWII in terms of ferocity and, necessarily, losses. Though these losses are skewed to the Russian side, attrition on the Ukrainian side is also unprecedented, and sustainable only through material support from its allies. With new contingents of Western armament on the way, this list now attempts to denote what types of heavy equipment are known to be in use on the battlefield that have not yet been confirmed destroyed or captured. As opposed, to the Russian counterpart of this list, we might thus expect this list to grow rather than dwindle down as time progresses.

Obviously, not all equipment known to have been developed by Ukraine or pledged delivered by an ally may be actually operational, so to keep things manageable this list will include only those systems that have been acknowledged to be in use with the military. Nevertheless, certain systems may be included or omitted on a case-by-case basis for instance because they are expected to be used operationally or, conversely, because including them would be impractical. Categories that have been excluded are small-sized (EOD) UGVs, civilian-grade UAVs, transport and training aircraft, naval vessels and (armoured) trucks. This list is updated as additional vehicle types are confirmed to be destroyed or captured.

US Not Ready to Take Practical Steps on Peace Settlement in Ukraine Lavrov

According to the foreign minister, the United States created the situation in Ukraine "by way of its strategic course to oppose the objective formation of a multipolar world, to maintain its hegemony, and subjugate anyone and everyone to its will"

Uganda's Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo (L) and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov Valery Sharifulin/TASS

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. The US is not ready either at this stage or in the foreseeable future for any kind of constructive action with regard to the settlement in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference on Thursday following talks with Ugandan counterpart Jeje Odongo.

"The United States is not ready either at this stage or, in my opinion, in the foreseeable future, for any constructive action regarding the settlement of the situation in Ukraine, which they themselves created the conditions for over many years," he said.

According to Lavrov, the United States created the situation in Ukraine "by way of its strategic course to oppose the objective formation of a multipolar world, to maintain its hegemony, and subjugate anyone and everyone to its will." "Ukraine is used as an obedient instrument within the framework of this course," the foreign minister stressed.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on May 16 that Russian and Ukrainian authorities had agreed to receive an African delegation to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Ramaphosa spoke on behalf of six African nations: Egypt, Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, Uganda and South Africa. When asked to comment on the South African initiative, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said that the US was ready to support any initiative for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine once it was first supported by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

Russia Sanctions Embassy Bank Accounts in Response to Finlands Unfriendly Acts Kremlin

Dmitry Peskov reiterated that the principle of reciprocity and the principle of an appropriate response to unfriendly steps would continue to prevail in relations

Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov Mikhail Metzel/TASS

Mikhail Metzel/TASS

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. Russia will not let the unfriendly actions of other countries go unanswered, adhering to the principles of reciprocity and responding appropriately, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

Speaking about the restrictions placed on the use of the bank accounts of the Finnish embassy and consulate general in Russia, the Kremlin spokesman pointed out that, "this is not an initiative of the Russian side." "We are only responding to the situation created by the authorities of a number of Western countries, including, to our regret, Finland," Peskov said. "We always say that we cannot and will not let any unfriendly action go unanswered," the Kremlin spokesman pointed out.

According to him, Moscow's response to Finland's note will include a reiteration of Russia's position: "The principle of reciprocity and the principle of an appropriate response to unfriendly steps will continue to prevail in our relations."

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that restrictions had been placed on the use of the bank accounts of the Finnish embassy and consulate general in Russia. She pointed out that these actions were a mirror response to similar restrictions placed on the Russian diplomatic mission in Finland, which has been limited to using an account at a Finnish bank only. Zakharova noted that Russia has repeatedly raised the issue of lifting restrictions on Russian diplomatic missions with the Finnish side. However, according to her, Finland has chosen a non-constructive approach, which contradicts the obligations of the host country to ensure the normal functioning of forei...

New Jersey- The world-renowned Golden Rule anti-nuclear sailboat, the first boat to engage in environmental direct action in the world, and its current crew are visiting Newark and Jersey City on May 19th, 20th, and 21st . The Golden Rule crew and ship are coming to our New Jersey ports to share their message of past nuclear disarmament and demilitarization victories and to highlight the ongoing environmental injustice struggles of Newark, Jersey City, and other Passaic and Hudson River communities that have wrestled for too many years with the toxic polluting legacy of manufacturing and the military complex, as well as current pollutions that still persist in overburdened, diverse communities. The series of events will bring together hundreds of people from dozens of organizations across New Jersey in what organizers intend to be a strengthening of bonds between organizations focused on peace and disarmament with those focused on social and environmental justice and the climate crisis.

When I made the career change that brought me into this incredible environmental field, it was all about saving wetlands, recalled Hugh Carola, Program Director at Hackensack Riverkeeper. Its still very much about that but much more. Its about putting the needs of people especially marginalized people at the center of what we do. Captain Bill Sheehan once told me, When we work for the needs of people, were more likely to win our battles and when we do, the wildlife, the wetlands and the river they win, too.

Organizers also intend for the events to be a celebration. Despite still waiting for the cleanup of dioxin in the Passaic River and being embroiled in the battle to stop yet another fossil fuel power plant in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, Chloe Desir, environmental justice organizer for Ironb...

Lukashenko Advocates Creation of New Document as Basis for Ukraine Talks

NATO Is Panicking After Russias Kinzhal Hypersonic Missiles Smashed Kievs Patriots "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY ANDREW KORYBKO | MAY 18, 2023

The fake news that circulated earlier this month alleging that Kievs Patriots shot down one of Russias Kinzhal hypersonic missiles has become even more ridiculous in the days after since theyre now claiming that another six were supposedly downed during a recent strike. The Mainstream Medias (MSM) laundering of these lies isnt just due to them taking everything their Ukrainian proxies say at face value, but even includes their own military experts actively contributing to this disinformation campaign.

The US Patriots lack the technical capabilities to track and intercept hypersonic projectiles, but that isnt anything for them to be embarrassed about since there doesnt presently exist any air defense system in the world that could do this. The Wests problem is therefore one of perceptions, however, since the MSM hyped up their deployment to Ukraine to the point where the public expected that former Soviet Republic to become invulnerable to any Russian strikes.

The Kremlin was aware of the Wests soft power interests in transferring this equipment there, hence why it cleverly decided to include several hypersonic missiles in its latest spree of strikes against military targets, knowing that there was no way that theyd be intercepted and thus discrediting their opponents. Not only that, but they even managed to destroy five launchers and a multifunctional radar on 16 May according to the Russian Ministry of Defenses report that was shared the day after.

Footage of that nights strikes subsequently appeared on social media, after which those who shared such were detained by the Ukrainian secret police on the pretext that this could have helped Russias military-intelligence services. In reality, Kiev was left flustered after that same footage showed how many millions of dollars worth of air defense missiles were wasted in trying to shoot down the Kinzhals. The US also confirmed that the Patriots were indeed damaged but denied that any of them were destroyed.

Nevertheless, the public was able to see for themselves just how desperate Kiev was to intercept those hypersonic projectiles, and many interpreted Americas confirmation that the Patriots...

Admin of the darknet carding platform Skynet Market pleads guilty "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A US national has pleaded guilty to operating the carding site Skynet Market and selling financial information belonging to tens of thousands of US victims.

The U.S. national Michael D. Mihalo, aka Dale Michael Mihalo Jr. and ggmccloud1, pleaded guilty to operating a carding site on the dark web called Skynet Market and selling financial information belonging to tens of thousands of victims in the US.

A carding site is an illegal marketplace where stolen credit card data and other personal info are offered for sale.

Mihalo and his co-conspirators also operated on other darknet marketplaces, including AlphaBay Market, Wall Street Market, and Hansa Market. The man and his co-conspirators sold the credit and debit card data of tens of thousands of U.S. victims between Feb. 22, 2016, and Oct. 1, 2019.

Mihalo earned at least $1 million worth of cryptocurrencies at the time of the sales, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Monero.

Mihalo is suspected to be the leader of a team that helped him sell this stolen financial information on the darknet. Each of the co-conspirators benefitted from the trusted reputation Mihalo, as ggmccloud1, had built on the darknet sites to sell more stolen card data. One of the mans conspirators, Taylor Ross Staats (40) of Texas, served as a card-checker. Staats personally earned at least $21,000 worth of Bitcoin for his activities.

Mihalo personally possessed, sent, and received the information associated with 49,084 stolen payment cards with the intent that the payment card information would be trafficked on darknet sites, all in furtherance of the conspiracy. reads the press release published by DoJ. Mihalo earned at least $1 million worth of cryptocurrencies at the time of the sales, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Monero. These funds have significantly appreciated since that time.

Mihalo pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit access device fraud, one count of access device fraud, and six counts of money laundering. The man faces a maximum penalty of five years in jail for the conspiracy count and a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each of the remaining counts.

The Putrid Underbelly of Woke Capitalism "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Michael Rectenwald Mises Wire 05/16/2023

Corporate intrigue reached a fevered pitch on May 6, 2023, in Omaha, Nebraska, when a shareholder was arrested during the annual shareholder meeting of Berkshire Hathaway. The shareholder challenged the affiliation of Warren Buffett with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Bill Gatess association with Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted in Florida for procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute, and who reportedly committed suicide in a New York jail while facing charges for sex trafficking and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking.

Peter Flaherty, the chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), stood to offer proposal number eight, which called for the roles of Berkshire CEO and chair to be separated and held by two persons. Flaherty argued that the separation of roles was necessary so that Berkshire would be less identified with Mr. Buffetts personal political activities. Speaking of Buffett, Flaherty stated:

Hes donated tens of billions to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As Bill Gates explained when the couple was still together, although the foundation bears our names, basically half our resources have come from Warren Buffett.

If woke culture is a disease, then philanthropy is the virus.

The Gates Foundation bankrolls the teaching of Critical Race Theory around the country, including that math is inherently racist.

Body Acceptance, Positivity, and a Double Standard "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

My eating disorder damaged many aspects of my life, but they say when youre in recovery, the body image issues are the last to go. At the moment, I am really exploring my feelings and beliefs about body acceptance. An eating disorder is made up of many different components, and this is an area I want to focus on.

Here are a few thoughts on body acceptance and positivity.

Body Acceptance

Back in my heyday, I dated men of all different sizes, races, backgrounds, religions, etc. I was an equal-opportunity girlfriend and I learned from everyone. I came to a point where I decided I really like nerds and that was my only real preference.

Why is it that when I was younger and dating around, I didnt really care about the shape or size of the men I was seeing, however, I was very concerned about my own shape and size? Im sure many people probably feel the same way I did. Why do we hold ourselves to a different standard?

I am more accepting of my body now than I was when I was younger even though I am much bigger now than I was back then. I can thank my therapist for that. She said I need to have radical acceptance my body is what it is. I will never be thin especially with my very necessary medications and thats not my fault. That sort of acceptance is a hard pill to swallow, but strangely, also a relief.

A Double Standard?

I recently noticed something. With the body positivity movement we are seeing more representation of plus-sized women in the media and fashion, but why does it seem men in the media havent changed at all? As a woman, I am often given the message, All shapes and sizes are beautiful, but I never see that applied to men. Even the mannequins in Target display plus-sized clothing in the womens section, but Im not seeing the same across the aisle in the mens section.

Are people now more accepting of larger women than larger men?

I brought this to my husbands attention and he said men dont care that much about how their bodies look. Is that true? I know men loved ones who were bullied as kids for being fat so you cant tell me it doesnt matter.

Obviously, women feel a lot of pressure about their looks, more so than men, but is it possible that the body positivity movement is leaving people out? Seeing women my size in the media really does help me. I think everyone deserves that representation.

My husband and I have ongoing conversations about body image and he always knows what t...

Anthill tiger: Putting one of Africas rarest wildcats on the radar "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Every night, somewhere unseen across the vast, semidesert and dry savanna habitat of Southern Africa, the continents deadliest cat emerges to hunt. Black-footed cats (Felis nigripes) are ideally suited for nocturnal stalking: They are evolutionarily older than jungle cats and domestic cats, boast exceptional night vision and hearing, and are believed to kill more prey than iconic big cats like lions, leopards and tigers. However, their most notable characteristic may have contributed to their decline. They are tiny, so receive little notice from conservationists. Full grown, they tip the scale at just 1-2 kilograms (2.2-4.4 pounds). As Africas smallest feline, theyre too tiny to even trigger a conventional camera trap. While the species was first described by science in 1824 (but only from skins, not a live specimen), it went largely unstudied for more than 150 years. Black-footed cats fly below the radar, says zoologist Beryl Wilson, project manager for the Black-footed Cat Working Group, an NGO. Shy, secretive and very hard to find, F. nigripes remained one of the continents least-studied nocturnal mammals until the 1990s. And without detailed data, determining a species conservation status and, more importantly, understanding how best to protect them, is near impossible. And thats the fate that befell the black-footed cat until a sole researcher came to its rescue. It took a die-hard researcher to study a species this small, enigmatic and mistakenly thought to be insignificant, Wilson says. You need someone, she adds, who can stick to it with German tenacity. China's Phone Giant Oppo Disbands Chip Design Unit as Shipment Slumps "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

China's phone giant Oppo disbands chip design unit as shipment slumps:

Chinese smartphone giant Oppo is disbanding its young chip design unit Zeku as weak global demand forces major handset manufacturers to cut costs and restrategize.

The decision comes as a surprise to those who believe the phone maker is bolstering its in-house chip development as rising geopolitical tensions with the U.S. threatens to cut Chinese firms off key suppliers. In the foreseeable future, Oppo will have to revert back to relying on third-party chip partners.

[...] Oppo explained its decision to cut its once-promising chip team in a statement issued today: "Due to the uncertainties in the global economy and the smartphone industry, we have to make difficult adjustments for long-term development. Therefore, the company has decided to cease the operation of Zeku."

In December 2021, Zeku revealed its first self-developed chipset, MariSilicon X, a neural processing unit designed to boost photo and video performance through machine learning, following Apple's path to bring chip design in-house. Zeku also set up a research base in Palo Alto.

[...] Oppo's retreat from chips signals another struggle from Chinese phone companies to strengthen their control over the semiconductor supply chain. Huawei lost access to advanced chips from the U.S. due to Trump-era sanctions, and its attempt to design its own high-end chips through HiSilicon floundered after the U.S. cut it off major foundries. The company resorted to spinning out its budget handset brand Honor, a move seen as a way to help the subsidiary circumvent the sanctions that have decimated Huawei's consumer business.

Access to Guns Is Now Americas No. 1 Public Health Concern "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Following a series of high-profile mass shootings, Americans now believe that access to guns or firearms is the No. 1 threat to public health. The issue has replaced opioids and fentanyl as the greatest concern, according to the latest Axios-Ipsos American Health Index released this morning.

Overall, 26 percent of Americans felt that the unrestricted availability of weapons is the main public health threat an increase of 9 percent since February. That is slightly more than the number of Americans who believe that the opioid pandemic is the worst problem.

That shift in public sentiment spells trouble for Republicans especially if the concern over access to guns motivates Americans to vote.

Even in a country deeply divided on many issues, gun control measures are popular. However, blocking them from becoming law and even expanding access to firearms is one of the GOPs top priorities.

In addition, while many Americans do not understand the complexity of some problems or who is responsible for them, when it comes to gun control, it is very clear which side is to blame for political inaction.

Conversely, for example, Republicans are trying to make the opioids crisis about border security, hoping that this will give them an edge.

Therefore, they want Americans to care about the latter but not the former. The new poll, however, indicates that this isnt the case.

That could create additional political headwinds for the GOP.

A similar dynamic has been playing out since the Supreme Court paved the way for states to pass anti-abortion legislation last year.

Republicans immediately rushed to enact draconian laws across the country. While the resulting abortion bans have been popular with a segment of their base, GOP candidates have been paying a price for them at the ballot box.

That is because Americans are not only strongly i...

Revisiting Folk Wisdom for Modern Chronic Wound Care "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

In the constant pursuit of innovation, its easy to overlook the wisdom of the past. The scientific method and modern research techniques have brought us much innovation, which can often lead us to dismiss traditional cultural beliefs.

However, sometimes, there are still valuable kernels of truth in the folklore of yesteryear. This holds true in a medical study from Finland, which focused on the traditional use of spruce resin to treat chronic wounds, breathing new life into an age-old therapy.

A Persistent Dilemma

Chronic wounds are defined as wounds that fail to proceed through a normal, timely healing process. While theres no strictly defined timescale, wounds are typically deemed as chronic if they dont progress through healing milestones after four weeks to three months. These wounds pose a significant burden on global healthcare systems. They create a significant workload for healthcare personnel, and are costly and difficult to manage. Most of all, though, they impair the quality of life for patients, who suffer these wounds for great lengths of time.

Patients with chronic wounds often suffer from other chronic health conditions such as advanced age, malnutrition, or vascular diseases. These can complicate or exclude treatment options that would otherwise help with the issue. Treatment often becomes a delicate balance between m...

Guyana High Court: EPA and ExxonMobil Put Country at Grave Risk "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

On May 3, 2023, Justice Sandil Kissoon, a High Court judge in Guyana, took both ExxonMobil and Guyanas EPA to task for not requiring the necessary level of insurance in case of a catastrophic spill that could result from the companys offshore drilling there. In a blistering, 55-page ruling, Justice Kissoon said Exxon subsidiary Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) was in breach of the insurance provisions of its Environmental Permit (awarded May 31, 2022), and if the breach were not corrected by June 10, the companys environmental permit, which is necessary for continued drilling, would be suspended.

Its a major blow to a project Exxon estimates will be its top production site by 2025, representing close to a third of the companys global oil and gas development.

The environmental permit for drilling offshore in Guyana requires EEPGL to furnish authorities with an insurance package from an independent firm along with an uncapped parent liability guarantee from ExxonMobil Corporation to cover all damages in the case of a catastrophic spill. Failure to do so, Justice Kissoon wrote, had put Guyana and its citizens in grave potential danger of a calamitous disaster.  Not only were these requirements not met, but the Court found that EEPGL was given a free pass by the countrys Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to start up oil production offshore Guyana. In its initial production phase, EEPGL began pumping 120,000 barrels of oil with a promise to provide insurance within a reasonable time.

That reasonable time was stretched out for 11 months with the EPAs blessings. The regulator then gave EEPGL the green light to increase production from 120,000 barrels of oil per day to 150,000 barrels.

Though this was not raised in court, EEPGL was also able to start up a second oil project in Guyana without meeting these insurance terms. That project produced 220,000 barrels of oil with permission already granted to increase production to 250,000 barrels of oil by year end.

The ruling is the first of its kind to be issued on matters of insurance in Guyana and represents a signif...

Black villains and stereotypes "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In a comment on my post about the TV series Les Misrables and colorblind casting, commenter Raging Bee made two points that are worth further discussion.

The first point is one of terminology:

First, how can casting be color-blind? Are people really pretending they dont, or cant, see the visible characteristics of the actors they hire? Whatever theyre trying to say, thats a terrible and stupid-sounding word to use.

Of course, casting directors see the color of the actors. Choosing people for roles without seeing them cannot be done for actors the way that it can be done for (say) music auditions. Color-blind in this context simply means that they do not rule out an actor for a part because of that persons color. Silentbob suggested that the term color conscious better represents the process that they describe as deliberately inclusive casting. But I do not know about that either since it seems to suggest that filmmakers actively sought out people of color for roles in order to be inclusive. There is no evidence that they did that.

What I would like to see is, as I said, for actors to be chosen for what they bring to the characters they are playing. This raises Raging Bees second point about the role of inspector Javert.

[H]aving a Black man portray the rigid, relentless, petty, evil Javert, against the wise, good-hearted, self-redeeming White hero, doesnt seem to me the best optics.

There was a time when people of color played somewhat stereotypical roles, with Black people playing servants and members of the working class, Middle Easterners playing terrorists, Asians as shopkeepers, and so on while the members of the western bourgeoisie were almost exclusively white. That has changed. I posted about the evolution of the long-running British TV series Midsomer Murders that began in 1998 and still continues.

It was observed in 2011 that there was almost a total absence of people of color in the shows. When the shows producer Brian True-May was asked about it, he replied that he did it deliberately because he wanted to show the villages as the bastion of Englishness and that that was a major part of the shows appeal. When asked if he meant the show should exclude ethnic minorities, he replied, Well, it should do, and maybe Im not politica...

Unveiling a Dark History: Nakbas Tragedy Continues Unabated after 75 Years "IndyWatch Feed World"

Even with all the protests and mentions of Nakba Day on social media, commemorating this horrific, sad event is nowhere near where it ought to be. Arguably one of the darkest and most awful chapters in the long history of Palestine, the Nakba needs to be fully commemorated in every capital in the world.

The politicization of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine and the consequent installment of an apartheid regime to govern it is such that few countries dare even to mention these crimes against humanity.

The full scope of the Nakba, a combination of several crimes against humanity, is yet to be understood.

To begin with, the Nakba is a tragedy that began over seventy-five years ago and continues in full force. Furthermore, the full extent of the crimes committed in the early Nakba, from 1947 to 1952, is still being uncovered.

The latest discovery was just published in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. According to the article, David Ben-Gurion, Israels first prime minister, ordered chemicals to be used to poison wells in Palestinian villages.

Newly found mass graves and testimonies of Zionist terrorists like Yerachmiel Kahnovich, who admitted in a recent YouTube video that he shot an anti-tank missile into the Dahmash mosque in Lyd in June 1948, are still being uncovered. Kahnovich single-handedly murdered over one hundred people taking refuge in the mosque as Lyd was undergoing a brutal ethnic cleansing. As the years go by, more testimonies like his are opening up. We should remember and appreciate that both the perpetrators and the victims of the acts that took place during the early period of the Nakba are getting old and will soon be gone.

Unlike the Holocaust, where the widely-accepted number of victims is recognized as six million, in the case of the Nakba, there is yet to be an agreed-upon death toll. So how many Palestinians were murdered as a result of the Nakba? No one knows for sure.

At least part of the reason for the lack of an established figure of Palestinians killed by Zionist terrorism is that the perpetrators of the crime are not done. The Israeli army continues to terrorize, and massacre Palestinians almost daily, and this killing essentially has the stamp of approval of the international community.

Yet another high-profile corruption scandal shakes up Kiev regime "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | May 18, 2023

Whenever a large-scale corruption scandal hits the Kiev regime, its Western supporters are suddenly shocked by the level of embezzlement and outright theft of state funds in the country theyre financing with hundreds of billions of their own taxpayers money. Prior to the start of Russias special military operation (SMO), this was essentially common knowledge in the political West, with even the mainstream propaganda machine acknowledging it on a virtually daily basis. However, after the SMO started, any news coverage about this effectively became heresy as various state-run networks were only allowed to report on the mythical battlefield dominance of the Neo-Nazi junta forces and how Ukrainians are giving everyone a lesson in freedom and democracy.

Thus, the most corrupt country in Europe suddenly became Switzerland. However, as corruption scandals never stopped shaking up the Kiev regime, news about high-profile cases was simply bound to reach Western audiences, significantly complicating efforts to present the Neo-Nazi junta as the beacon of hope for the free world. In the latest of such controversies, the Neo-Nazi juntas National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutors Office (SAP) have announced that action has been taken against the highest judicial authority of the Kiev regime. According to the official announcements of these anti-corruption bodies, posted on their official social media accounts and channels on May 16:

NABU and SAP have exposed large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court, in particular a scheme to obtain undue advantages by the leadership and judges of the Supreme Court.

Taking into account the fact that this is the top legal institution in the country, the scandal is yet another huge embarrassment for the Neo-Nazi junta, particularly as the head of the Supreme Court himself was arrested in connection to taking bribes to the tune of several million dollars. This means that the highest authority responsible for upholding the law is breaking it in the most blatant way imaginable. NABU and SAP officially announced they have conclusive evidence proving that the Chairman of the Supreme Court received a $2.7 million bribe. During a national press briefi...

Kievs air defense capability threatened "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Lucas Leiroz | May 18, 2023

The recent successful Russian attacks against strategic Ukrainian targets made clear the reality that was already reported by many military experts: the Ukrainian air defense is  vulnerable. Despite all the Western aid and the incessant delivery of weapons, Kiev seems unable to improve its defense system, continuing to be an easy target for Russias incisive combat actions. Tracking and shooting down Russian missiles and drones has become difficult work for Ukrainian forces, which are still failing to stop Russian weapons from reaching their targets.

However, this news coexists with Western-Ukrainian propaganda that Russian hypersonic missiles are being shot down by Kiev. Although mainstream media outlets support the Ukrainian narrative, in recent months these same newspapers have reported the weakness of the regimes armed forces on several occasions, therefore there is a contradiction in data.

For example, in March, experts pointed out in an article published in The Washington Post that Kiev was suffering from a severe shortage of ammunition for its air defense systems. At the time, analysts said that Ukrainian forces could become absolutely unable to protect their airspace against Russian missiles and UAVs, leaving military facilities open to enemy attacks. Experts also warned at the time of the serious lack of qualified military personnel, stating that most of the experienced Ukrainian military had already been neutralized in the first year of the operation, leaving now few able soldiers to manage the countrys defense systems.

Even more pessimistic forecasts were exposed by the Financial Times, which also commented on the critical situation of the Ukrainian air defense. Experts have warned that the number of anti-missiles launched to intercept a Russian attack is usually double the number of Russian missiles or drones, in order to increase the chances of success. A side effect of this is to overspend artillery ammunition, accelerating depletion.

[] Officials said the continuing need to defend against Russian missile and drone attacks had systematically depleted Ukraines stockpiles a warning backed up by US intelligence documents leaked online this spring that suggested Kyiv might run out of ammunition for five critical air defence systems. According to documents reviewed by the Financial Times, the US assessed in late February that Ukraines ability to protect its troops on the front lines would be completely reduced by May 23, the Financial Times article reads.

Forbes also reported on the Ukrainian situ...

Turkey's main opposition presidential candidate has promised to expel all refugees from the country in a bid to attract nationalist voters ahead of the second round of elections on 28 May.

Oldest living creature on Earth identified, emerging 700 million years ago "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Scientists have announced that the oldest living creature on our planet is a jellyfish-like organism called a ctenophore. It evolved from the same primordial animals that humans did.

This fascinating creature first emerged 700 million years ago, a significant time before the dinosaurs, which appeared only 230 million years ago. The study found that ctenophores are the closest relatives of the first animals and can still be spotted in modern-day oceans and aquariums.

A team from the University of California, Berkeley embarked on a quest to decipher the relationships within the animal tree of life. They wanted to broaden our understanding of the origins and evolution of life on Earth.

Nothing Beats Bushmeat, Not Even the Risk of Disease "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Human Wrongs Watch

BULAWAYO, May 18 2023 (IPS)* Meat from wild animals is relished across Africa and widely traded, but scientists are warning that eating bush meat is a potential health risk, especially in the wake of pandemics like COVID-19.

Freshly slaughtered bush meat is being consumed even though it may have health risks.

Freshly slaughtered bush meat is being consumed even though it may have health risks.

A study at the border settlements of Kenya and Tanzania has found that while people have been aware of the risks associated with eating bushmeat, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak, they dont worry about hunting and eating wild animals that could transmit diseases.

On the contrary, the demand for bushmeat has increased, the 2023 study by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and TRAFFIC and other partners found.

No Beef With Bushmeat

Bushmeat is a collective term for meat derived from wild mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds that live in the jungle, savannah, or wetlands. Bushmeat comes from a variety of wild animals, including monkeys, pangolins, snakes, porcupines, antelopes, elephants, and giraffes.

The study the first ever to look at disease risk perceptions of wild meat activities in rural communities in East Africa was conducted in December 2021, and 299 people were interviewed in communities on the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Key findings of the study revealed that levels of education played a critical role in understanding zoonotic disease transmission; a majority of the people interviewed who had higher levels of education were more aware of the risks of disease transmission....

Widespread fires do extensive local damages then regional disruption and long range pollution

A third of the Wests burned forests can be traced to fossil fuel companies
.
.
.
From the Article by Kate Yoder, The Grist Online Magazine, May 16, 2023
.
.
.
The American West has always had forest fires just not like this. Blazes are spreading further and burning longer, incinerating towns and exposing millions of people to noxious smoke. While a century of fire suppression and other land management choices contribute to the severity, climate change is a key factor fueling these fires, roughly doubling the acreage burned over the last 40 years. A new study takes this connection one step further, making the case that a significant chunk of burned forests nearly 20 million acres can be traced back to major fossil fuel companies.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research Letters on Tuesday, is the first to quantify how corporate emissions have made wildfires worse. Experts say the new research could help advance growing efforts to take polluters to court and hold polluters accountable for climate-fueled disasters.

These companies should be held accountable for their fair share of the damages that theyve caused, said Carly Phillips, a coauthor of the new study and a research scientist at the Science Hub for Climate Litigation at the Union of Concerned Scientists. They lied and engaged in this orchestrated campaign of deception for years, and it didnt have to be this way, right?

Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists and the University of California, Merced, found that 37 percent of forest burned across the western United States and southwestern Canada since 1986 can be linked to carbon pollution from 88 of the worlds largest oil, gas, and coal companies. That group includes Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, and Shell; state-owned oil producers like Saudi Aramco and Gazprom; and cement manufacturers. Researchers considered emissions directly emitted by these companies operations as well as the indirect emissions from the products they sold.

Since 2017, cities and states have filed around 20 lawsuits against fossil fuel companies based on state laws that prohibit deceptive advertising, seeking money to adapt to the effects of climate chang...

How Europes Colonial Legacy is Fueling Tensions in South China Sea "IndyWatch Feed War"

There is not a day that goes by without breaking news on escalating tensions in the South China Sea, as regional powers like Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia increasingly contest Chinas efforts to exert dominance of the strategic waterway through which moves a fifth of global trade. Yet beneath these rising tensions, the spectre of European colonialism lurks undetected.

The unexpected link between present day tensions and past misdemeanors comes through a seemingly obscure international legal dispute which last February resulted in an award of nearly $15 billion against the government of Malaysia, on behalf of nine heirs to a colonial-era Sultanate in the Sulu region of the Philippines.

The award is not only the second largest of its kind in the history of international legal arbitrations, it may also be linked to current geopolitical tensions in the region in surprising ways. According to former NATO analyst Maurizio Geri, the lawyers for the Sulu heirs are closely tied to US tech giants competing with China to dominate subsea cabling routes through which pass the worlds internet data.

Geri claims that apart from traditional trade routes, control of the global internet is the real prize at stake in the South China Sea. Indeed, in early May, US and EU officials wrote urgently to Malaysia citing risks to national security and foreign investment due to a Malaysian government review which could gift Chinas Huawei a major role in building Malaysias 5G network.

He argues that with the Sulu heirs case being financed by unidentified Western investors through the third-party litigation funding firm Therium Capital, it might well exacerbate Malaysian perceptions of Western hostility to Malaysias national interests.

But the case itself is based on flawed misreadings of the history of Spanish and British colonialism in the region. The Sulu heirs rest their case on an 1878 colonial-era land deal in which the sultan leased his territory in the Sabah region of present-day Malaysia to two British colonists for the sum of around $1,000 a year. Malaysia paid the fee until an armed invasion of Sabah by followers of the Sulu heirs in 2013, which resulted in 71 people killed.

The decision of the arbitrator in the Sulu heirs case is premised on the assumption that the 1878 treaty between the Sultan of Sulu and two British colonialists, Alfred Dent and Baron de Overbeck, is the historic legal foundation of modern Malaysias sovereignty over the North Borneo region containing what is today known as Sabah.

Thats just false. British colonial records reviewed by several specialist historians show that the Sultan of Sulu did not in fact have ownership or control over the lands of North Borneo...

For the birds "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Washington Post is claiming that listening to bird songs is good for you.

Looking to improve your mental health? Pay attention to birds.

Two studies published last year in Scientific Reports said that seeing or hearing birds could be good for our mental well-being.

So give them a listen as you learn why they may help.

Research has consistently shown that more contact and interaction with nature are associated with better body and brain health.

Birds appear to be a specific source of these healing benefits. They are almost everywhere and provide a way to connect us to nature. And even if they are hidden in trees or in the underbrush, we can still revel in their songs.

OK, fine, I will believe that going on regular walks in the park, paying attention to your environment, and living in a place compatible with other living things, is beneficial. I object to the idea that the effect is specific to birds. Why not spiders? A stroll in the park and checking out the trees and underbrush is something you can do while spidering, too.

You arent going to hear spider songs unless you have much better ears than Ive got, but on the plus side, spiders dont start shrieking and screeching and whistling outside your bedroom window at 5am.

New Zealands Record High Military Spending Will Please Its Dangerous Ally But Increase the Risk of Nuclear War "IndyWatch Feed War"

By New Zealand/Aotearoa for a World BEYOND War, May 18, 2023

A New Zealand peace network says the budgets record military spending will please our most dangerous ally the United States but dramatically increase the risk of propelling us into a nuclear war.

World BEYOND War spokesman and former Disarmament Minister, the Hon. Matt Robson, says the dramatically increased military spending a record $6.6 Billion is not driven by any real security needs but rather that Prime Ministers Ardern and Hipkins signed up to the containment policies of nuclear armed NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation).

The steady increases over the last five years, and the planned future big ticket items to make New Zealand interoperable with NATO, are  justified by the lie that New Zealand is threatened by China and Russia, he says.

The real security threat is New Zealand having a dangerous ally in US- led NATO, which is increasing its  bases and  concentrating its military might on Chinas doorstep, says Mr Robson.

As an Asian partner, along with big military spenders Japan, Australia  and South Korea the price tag of interoperability with  NATO is to continually increase military spending, he says.

Our biggest trading partner China has but two military bases outside of its territory, while the US and its NATO allies have them globally with almost 500, and expanding, in the Pacific.

The US is now seeking to add Papua New Guinea to that list. That tells you which country  is driving militarisation of the Pacific our most dangerous ally, the US, says Mr Robson.

World BEYOND Wars Vice President Liz Remmerswaal says this spending takes away from New Zealands social and economic needs at a time when people are hurting.

We are dealing with the effects of a global pandemic as well as cyclone damage and a climate crises, she says.

New Zealands social and economic development, the basis of our actual security, require cooperation with China on multiple levels, including climate change and development strategies with and for our Pacific neighbours, and this should be our focus, says Mrs Remmerswaal.

Our security is not served by going deeper into the nuclear arms of NATO and being at war with China and Russia.

NATOs Vilnius Summit Must Not Repeat Bucharest 2008 "IndyWatch Feed War"

As Ukraines counteroffensive gains steam and NATO leaders prepare for their next summit in Vilnius, Lithuania in July, Ukraines complicated future within the NATO alliance is once again front and center. For Ukraine and many of its most supportive allies from Poland to the Baltic states and the UK, it is important that NATO not repeat the mistakes made at the 2008 Bucharest Summit. At that summit, NATO declared that both Ukraine and Georgia will become members of the alliance at an unspecified time, without providing a Membership Action Plan (MAP) or formal accession framework. In a recent piece for Foreign Affairs, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was critical of the empty promises made to Ukraine at Bucharest, noting that ambiguity is Putins best ally.

Preliminary media reports suggest NATO will be hesitant to offer Ukraine a formal path to membership once again, particularly as the war with Russia still rages within its borders. Similar to how events unfolded at Bucharest, France and Germany are in favor of a slower, more cautious approach that doesnt alienate Russia, while Washington is likely to be much more cautious as well. However, much can change in the next couple of months, with Britain supplying longer range missiles capable of striking Crimea, Germany announcing its most significant aid package, and Russian forces continuing to suffer from supply shortfalls and infighting. Ukraine is well-positioned for its long-anticipated counteroffensive, with its allies from Berlin, Paris, London, and Warsaw all stepping up to the plate and delivering significant military hardware simultaneously.

Of all the former Soviet republics, Ukraines membership in NATO has long been the most controversial and threatening when viewed from Moscow. Ukraine stands in sharp contrast to the Baltic states which broke away quickly from Moscow in the 1990s to embrace Euro-Atlantic integration, joining NATO and the EU in 2004. Ukraine formed part of the USSRs Slavic core, an inseparable part of Russian identity and Moscows near abroad in the minds of Russian leaders since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The 2004 Orange Revolution was Ukraines first real post-Soviet revolution to break against the oligarchic class and attempt to forge closer ties with Europe. Since the 2013-14 Maidan Uprising and Russian annexation of Crimea, Ukraines Euro-Atlantic identity across all its regions from Lviv to Kharkiv and its serious contention for NATO membership has been solidified. In 2019, Ukraine amended its constitution to formally enshrine its commitment to join NATO, and a March 2023...

Hajj: UK Muslims face '10-year wait' as Saudi Arabia slashes quota

MPs set to lobby Saudi ambassador in London as places for British pilgrims cut from pre-pandemic 25,000 to 3,600
Areeb Ullah Thu, 05/18/2023 - 13:09
This year's Hajj is set to be attended by pre-pandemic numbers of pilgrims after three years of restrictions (Reuters)

British Muslims may have to wait for up to 10 years to attend the Hajj because of a sharp reduction in the number of places made available to pilgrims from the UK by Saudi Arabia, Middle East Eye can reveal.

Under a new system introduced by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the quota of Hajj places allocated to the UK for this years pilgrimage is set to be reduced to about 3,600 compared with more than 25,000 before the Covid-19 pandemic.

But just weeks before the Hajj, the final figure appears to be up in the air, with some people who have booked and paid for packages through the new system complaining that they are still waiting for confirmation of whether they have a place.

MEE has learnt that members of parliament plan to meet the Saudi ambassador in London next week to ask for the quota to be restored to pre-pandemic levels.

Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Hajj and Umrah held an emergency meeting in parliament on Tuesday to discuss the situation.

The name we use for sacred, untouched forest is Kaagy poru ey. These are places where people should never interfere, says the Indigenous Guarani leader as he moves deeper into the forest until the sound of cars, just 2 kilometers, or a little more than a mile away in the city, can no longer be heard. But the Jaragu Indigenous Territory, where were talking, is anything but untouched. Located just 16 km (10 mi) from downtown in the northwestern corner of So Paulo, the most populous city in the Western Hemisphere, this place has been the stage for land ownership disputes and invasions since the first Europeans arrived here in the 16th century: it was one of the first sites where gold was mined in Brazil, was later used for coffee farming, and in recent decades has been subject to invasions and real estate speculation. Surrounded by polluted rivers, noise, traffic jams and deforested land, not to mention the constant struggle with one of the worlds largest cities for every square centimeter of land, the 125 Indigenous families living in the six villages inside Jaragu decided in 2017 to join forces in planting native Atlantic Rainforest seedlings and bringing back indigenous bees, which are important pollinators. Additively manufacturing soft robots could reduce waste, increase performance "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Soft robotics have several key advantages over rigid counterparts, including their inherent safety featuressoft materials with motions powered by inflating and deflating air chambers can safely be used in fragile environments or in proximity with humansas well as their flexibility that enables them to fit into tight spaces. Textiles have become a choice material for constructing many types of soft robots, especially wearables, but the traditional cut and sew methods of manufacturing have left much to be desired.

Now, researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have established a new approach for additively manufacturing , using a 3D knitting method that can holistically print entire soft robots. Their work is reported in Advanced Functional Materials.

The soft robotics community is still in the phase of seeking alternative materials approaches that will enable us to go beyond more classical rigid robot shapes and functions, says Robert Wood, senior corresponding author on the paper, who is the Harry Lewis and Marlyn McGrath Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences at SEAS.

"Both rates are the highest recorded by Gallup since it began measuring depression using the current form of data collection in 2015," according to the survey report. The survey was conducted with 5,167 U.S. adults between February 21-28, 2023. Respondents were asked, "Has a doctor or nurse ever told you that you have depression?" and "Do you currently have or are you currently being treated for depression?"

One left: British Columbias last chance on northern spotted owls "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

A thousand northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) once lived among the sweeping cedars and towering Douglas firs of southwestern British Columbias old-growth forests. Today, only one female survives. She lives alone now within the traditional territory of the Spzm First Nation. While a larger albeit still threatened population remains in the United States, the northern spotted owl is perilously close to extirpation in the wild in Canada. The last owl wasnt always alone. Last August, came a ray of hope. After 15 years of painstakingly building up a captive population by incubating eggs and hand rearing chicks, the provinces captive breeding program, established in 2007, released three captive born owls into the wild. The three males were brought to a large aviary built in the forest, near to where the lone wild female was found, and welcomed by the Spzm Nation with a traditional ceremony. Though one of the owls was hit by a train some months later, and taken back to the breeding center to recover, the other two males appeared to be successfully making their home in the forest. But early this May, nearly 7 months after they were released, both captive-born owls died. The cause of death remains unknown, but their remains and GPS transponders were found. Derek Chauvin appeals conviction in George Floyd murder to Minnesota Supreme Court "IndyWatch Feed World"

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police Officer convicted in the murder of George Floyd, is appealing his case to the Minnesota Supreme Court. Chauvin's lawyer, William Mohrman, on Wednesday filed a petition for review with the state's highest court, arguing that the district judge's decision not to move the proceedings out of the city deprived his client of a fair trial. The petition comes a month after the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld Chauvin's conviction for second-degree murder and let his 22-1/2-year sentence remain in place.

An Iranian man passes by the oil equipment during the International Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Exhibition in Tehran, Iran, May 17, 2023.

More Russian firms invest in Iran

A delegation of 28 Russian oil, gas and petrochemical companies will visit Iran to increase the cooperation between the two countries and assist Iran by sharing knowledge for improving "the efficiency of the oil, gas, and energy industry", the ISNA news agency reported.

Years of international sanctions on Iran have left its oil and gas industry in dire need of renovation and up-to-date technology.

According to ISNA, Russian firms would participate in Iran's oil fair and present their technology for drilling and maintenance for wells, as well as modern devices used for oil transfer systems and the loading and unloading of petrochemical products.

Following the sanctions Western countries have imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine, Tehran and Moscow have rapidly increased their collaboration in industrial, economic and military fields.

Last year, Iranian officials announced that Russian oil and gas companies would increase their investment in Iran from $4bn to $40bn.

9 Neighborhood Events for Next to Nothing "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Flickr/dani0010.)

There is something so powerful about simply knowing the names of your neighbors. You dont have to know much about their lives or personalities. Just being able to put a face and a name to a particular front door is an important part of developing trust and a sense of belonging in your place. Its so much more than having someone you could borrow a ladder or a cup of sugar from (though thats pretty handy). I think that knowing your neighbors is a critical starting point for building a stronger town

Since dipping my toe into the neighborhood-building world several years ago, Ive become an enthusiastic collector of event ideas. If its got neighbors connecting and hanging out together, my interest is piqued!

With enough time and money, anyone can throw an amazing event. But often, the simplest concepts are the most memorable and enjoyable. Those grassroots, bottom-up ideas are often the best, perhaps because they feel so accessible and replicable.

If you have an active neighborhood association or group, then youre more likely to have some resources at your disposal: maybe a bit of a budget, a crew of volunteers, access to event space, communication channels, and name recognition.

But what if youre just a person who wants to get to know more people or strengthen the local s...

Haitian Flag Day / Da de la Bandera de Hait "IndyWatch Feed War"

Espaol abajo

By Gabriel Aguirre, World BEYOND War, May 18, 2023

Individuals and organizations in the United States, Canada, Latin America and other parts of the world have united around the call for action by Haiti on May 18, Haitian Flag Day, the anniversary of Haitian independence from France in 1803.

The global movements and organizations, such as World BEYOND War, that believe in a future of sustainable peace, in the abolition of all forms of war, and the eradication of any form of violence, join this call for peace in Haiti and the end to the internal violence that is currently plaguing the country.

We demand that the governments of the United States and Canada stop sending arms and military equipment to Haiti,  which is contributing to the exponential increase in internal violence and could escalate into a civil war.

In response to the escalating violence, the United States government is aiding the Haitian polices capacity to exercise violence, and has additionally announced that, together with Canada, it is considering sending a new United Nations multinational force.

The experience of past foreign military interventions in the country, backed by the United States, first in 1915 in the occupation that lasted 19 years, then the United Nations military mission in 1993 and again in 2004, showed that a militarized response only provoked more violence, led to more violations of human rights, and furthered the deterioration of the material living conditions of the Haitian people.

Thus, we join the thousands of voices around the world that call for the cessation of violence; the disarmament of paramilitary groups and mercenaries, which are being supported by the military forces and the corrupt police in the country with the aim of mitigating the legitimate protest of people in the streets who demand democracy. These same paramilitary groups have been denounced by different international and human rights o...

Action Fraud Reinforces the Narrative That Says Cops Are Apathetic Towards White-Collar Crimes "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

King Charles Crown: Police? Whose police?

Summary: The crimes of Sirius Open Source crimes that had many victims dont seem to interest the police enough to act fast (we expected this all along); as its 28-day time window approaches we revisit the matter and discuss some more

ABOUT four weeks ago I contacted the police and filed a report about Sirius fraud. It was perfectly factual, with no gaps in knowledge left to fill (as I had received formal documentation from the original sources after months of ordeals, mostly trying hard to get them to admit the issue and write official letters). All the witnesses were ready to testify and answer additional questions.

Police is in no rush to act. Cops would be involved if someones life was at immediate risk, but thats about it. They drag their heels, just like pension providers do. Months ago I learn from a friend, a professor who worked here, that his female partner got punched in the face and despite the cops having CCTV footage of the incident and plate number (of the car in question) in other words everything needed to summon the perpetrator of assault and convict her the cops chose to do nothing, not even prosecute. See, here in Manchester it has become normal; if something gets damaged or stolen they typically just ask, do you have insurance? They dont want to get involved. They might open a case, give you a number, and then add it to the tally, eventually generating some detailed statistics for taxpayers while asking for implicit consent to close the case (without resolution).

They said they aimed to make progress within 28 days. Well, early this coming Saturday itll be 28 days, so I plan to call them tomorrow afternoon and ask about progress. And no, dont bother to put me down, Im not expecting much to happen. With my low expectations, not due to the crime not being severe enough but the police not being effective enough (from personal experience), I all along expected many delays, little action etc. I had already prepared actions to come after police inaction. There are 5 steps to come after that, but were keeping them close to our chest for now. By the end of this series we hope to make it crys...

Bill advanced by far-right lawmakers passes preliminary vote in parliament

Palestinians in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip protest against the holding of the annual far-right Israeli rally in Jerusalem, 18 May 2023 (AFP)

Israeli lawmakers are pushing a new bill that would see flying the Palestinian flag punishable by up to one year in prison.

The bill is backed by members of the far-right Jewish Power party and states that three or more people waving the flag of a "hostile entity" will be considered a prohibited gathering and therefore punishable.

The Israeli Knesset has already voted its approval at a preliminary reading of the bill and it will need three additional votes to pass.

"As a democracy, Israel enables its citizens to protest decisions they dont agree with the authorities on," reads the explanation of the bill, according to Haaretz.

"But the proposal draws a red line between legitimate protest and one in which there are flags of those who dont recognise the state of Israel, those who arent friendly toward it or dont enable Israel to raise its flag in its territory."

Since coming to power earlier this year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has introduced a raft of legislation aimed at appeasing the far-right in Israel.

House Republicans Now Own George Santos "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

News Analysis

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) is many things (and even more if you believe everything he says): A proven serial liar, recently indicted for a variety of crimes, an alleged sexual harasser, an admitted thief, a congressman who never would have been elected if voters knew who he really was, and a solid GOP vote in the House. On Wednesday, Republicans showed that the last part outweighs everything else.

Faced with the choice of expelling Santos now or keeping him around for a while longer, they unanimously voted for the latter.

Because, in the House GOPs eyes, the worst thing Santos could do is to leave them with an even slimmer advantage than the four-seat majority they currently enjoy.

The only thing that matters to them is that, for now, he is a vote for the Republican agenda.

Forget that even 71 percent of Republicans think it is likely that the New York lawmaker committed a crime. Forget that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said last week that he would not support Santos if he chose to run again. Forget that many GOP lawmakers have called on him to resign.

Just take Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR), who....

It Will Cost Up to $21.5 Billion to Clean Up Californias Oil Sites. The Industry Wont Make Enough Money to Pay for It. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

For well over a century, the oil and gas industry has drilled holes across California in search of black gold and a lucrative payday. But with production falling steadily, the time has come to clean up many of the nearly quarter-million wells scattered from downtown Los Angeles to western Kern County and across the state.

The bill for that work, however, will vastly exceed all the industrys future profits in the state, according to a first-of-its-kind study published Thursday and shared with ProPublica.

This major issue has sneaked up on us, said Dwayne Purvis, a Texas-based petroleum reservoir engineer who analyzed profits and cleanup costs for the report. Policymakers havent recognized it. Industry hasnt recognized it, or, if they have, they havent talked about it and acted on it.

The analysis, which was commissioned by Carbon Tracker Initiative, a financial think tank that studies how the transition away from fossil fuels impacts markets and the economy, used California regulators draft methodology for calculating the costs associated with plugging oil and gas wells and decommissioning them along with related infrastructure. The methodology was developed with feedback from the industry.

The report broke down the costs into several categories. Plugging wells, dismantling surface infrastructure and decontaminating polluted drill sites would cost at least $13.2 billion, based on publicly available data. Adding in factors with slightly more uncertainty, like inflation rates and the price of decommissioning miles of pipeline, could bring the total cleanup bill for Californias onshore oil and gas industry to $21.5 billion.

U.S. Congress Doesnt Plan to Overreact to Generative AI Copyright Challenges "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

judiciary comitteeThis article consists of a collection of words that were once invented, most of them long before copyright or trademarks existed.

Words form the building blocks of todays society; they help to foster creativity and communication, and represent the driving force behind human intelligence.

These same words are now used as input by generative AI that will ultimately lead to new breakthroughs. Depending on who you ask, it has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of day-to-day life. At the same time, AI is causing grave concerns for the copyright industry.

The copyright angle is the topic of many debates and has already made its way to court in a few cases. Its high on the agendas of governments around the world, which are poised to accommodate generative AI within copyright legislation.

House Hearing on Copyright and AI

Copyright concerns surrounding generative AI were explored in detail yesterday by U.S. lawmakers at the House Judiciary IP Subcommittee. This hearing is an early step in the legislative process but an important one at that.

Historically, debates around copyright legislation tend to be polarized. However, U.S. Representative and committee chairman, Darrell Issa, urged everyone to approach the discussion with a spirit of collaboration.

Let us find common ground, seeking solutions that promote the flourishing of both creative expression and intellectual property protection. The stakes couldnt be higher and the outcome will shape the future landscape of art, technology and copyright today, Rep. Issa said.

Finding Middle Ground

The chairman stressed that, contrary to what some fear, Congress doesnt plan to make hasty decisions or overreact. At the same time, stakeholders should not fear or hope for severe measures. In this context he mentioned Spain and Italy, which have taken quite extreme positions.

Spain is moving forward with what I think might be a very restrictive interpretation. Japan believes, apparently, that all information that goes into the teaching is in fact free of any copyright restriction in its use.

I do not believe that todays discussion will take us down either road. I believe we will measure carefully and find middle ground that respects existing copyright law, while allowing the future of generative AI to flourish,R...

One Thursday afternoon in December, a father and two of his estranged children boarded a flight from Salt Lake City to Texas, beginning an effort to repair their fractured relationship.

A family court official had ordered them to attend a reunification camp, Turning Points for Families Texas, to repair damage that the judge said the boys mother had inflicted by alienating them from their father.

The following morning, at the vacation rental where their therapy sessions were to be held, the counselor made an unusual request.

Jordan, the boys father, was asked to play a recording hed made of a 2019 domestic dispute with his ex-wife, Hollie, that led to her arrest and their divorce. (ProPublica is using only the first names of adult family members to avoid identifying the children who are minors.) Jordan would later tell the court that he never intended for his sons to hear the sounds of their mother screaming during their fight. I never even wanted the kids to know it existed, he said of the recording.

But the Turning Points counselor, Loretta Maase, insisted. The camp claims to remedy parental alienation, a disputed psychological theory in which one parent in this case Hollie is accused of brainwashing a child to turn them against the other parent. They needed to hear the truth about their mother so that the healing can begin, Maase said of the children.

What unfolded after the recording was played caused the four-day treatment session to spiral out of control.

The younger son, then 12, covered his head with a blanket, shutting out the sounds, while his older brother became violent. When the boys refused to leave their bedroom to take part in therapy, Maase ordered the door removed. Their bedding, shower items, food and clothing were also removed, according to family members who participated in the intervention.

They would use the blankets to hide underneath so they didnt...

Possible Non-Drug Cure for Depression "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

"Powerful magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate the brain can bring fast relief to many severely depressed patients for whom standard treatments have failed. Yet it's been a mystery exactly how transcranial magnetic stimulation, as the treatment is known, changes the brain to dissipate depression. Now, research led by Stanford Medicine scientists has found that the treatment works by reversing the direction of abnormal brain signals."

"When they analyzed fMRI data across the whole brain, one connection stood out. In the normal brain, the anterior insula, a region that integrates bodily sensations, sends signals to a region that governs emotions, the anterior cingulate cortex.

"You could think of it as the anterior cingulate cortex receiving this information about the bodylike heart rate or temperatureand then deciding how to feel on the basis of all these signals," Mitra said.

In three-quarters of the participants with depression, however, the typical flow of activity was reversed: The anterior cingulate cortex sent signals to the anterior insula. The more severe the depression, the higher the proportion of signals that traveled the wrong way."

"When depressed patients were treated with SNT, the flow of neural activity shifted to the normal direction within a week, coinciding with a lifting of their depression."

A Vintage Polaroid Camera Goes Manual "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

There once was a time when all but the most basic of fixed focus and aperture cameras gave the photographer full control over both shutter speed and f-stop. This allowed plenty of opportunity to tinker but was confusing and fiddly for non-experts, so by the 1960s and 70s many cameras gained automatic control of those functions using the then quite newly-developed solid state electronics. Here in 2023 though, the experts are back and want control. [Jim Skelton] has a vintage Polaroid pack film camera hes using with photographic paper as the film, and wanted a manual exposure control.

Where a modern camera would have a sensor in the main lens light path and a microcontroller to optimize the shot, back then they had to make do with a CdS cell sensing ambient light, and a simple analog circuit. He considered adding a microcontroller to do the job, but realized that it would be much simpler to replace the CdS cell with a potentiometer or a resistor array. A 12-position switch with some carefully chosen resistor values was added, and placed in the cameras original battery compartment. The final mod brought out the resistors and switch to a plug-in dongle allowing easy switching between auto and switch...

The Newest College Admissions Ploy: Paying to Make Your Teen a Peer-Reviewed Author "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. This article was co-published with The Chronicle of Higher Education.

On a family trip to the Jersey Shore in the summer of 2021, Sophias go-to meal was the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. The buns were toasty, the chicken was crispy and the fries didnt spill from the bag.

Sophia was entering her sophomore year in prep school, but her parents were already thinking ahead to college. They paid to enroll her in an online service called Scholar Launch, whose programs start at $3,500. Scholar Launch, which started in 2019, connects high school students with mentors who work with them on research papers that can be published and enhance their college applications.

Publication is the objective, Scholar Launch says on its website. We have numerous publication partners, all are peer-reviewed journals.

The prospect appealed to Sophia. Nowadays, having a publication is kind of a given for college applicants, she said. If you dont have one, youre going to have to make it up in some other aspect of your application.

Sophia said she chose marketing as her field because it sounded interesting. She attended weekly group sessions with a Scholar Launch mentor, a marketing executive who also taught at an Ivy League business school, before working one-on-one with a teaching assistant. Assigned to analyze a companys marketing strategy, she selected Chick-fil-A.

Sophias paper offered a glowing assessment. She credited Chick-fil-A as responsible for the popularity of the chicken sandwich, praised its fare as healthier than fast-food burgers, saluted its humorous yet honest slogan (a cow saying, Eat mor chikin) and admired its family-friendly attitude and traditional beliefs, exemplified by closing its restaurants on Sundays. Parts of her paper sounded like a customer endorsement (and she acknowledged to ProPublica that her marketing analysis couldve been stronger). Neither too dry nor too juicy, the companys signature sandwich is the perfect blend to have me wanting more after every bite, she wrote. Just fr...

Hajj: British pilgrims complain of missing money and cancelled bookings

Saudi Arabia ended the use of travel agents for western pilgrims but many using new Nusuk portal say they are struggling to book packages

Muslim pilgrims perform the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual as part of the Hajj pilgrimage, Mina, near Mecca, Saudi Arabia, 9 July 2022 (AFP)

Nasim Hussein has been waiting for years to go on the Hajj. Saving whatever she can. It was her dream.

Her original plan was to wait a couple more years, but when Hussein, who is 65 and retired, and her husband experienced some age-related health issues they decided it was a case of now or never.

"We've been dreaming about going to Hajj for so long, and when our health began to take a turn for the worse, we had no choice," said Hussein, who lives in Leicester.

Unable to book via her local travel agent, Hussein signed up for the Nusuk portal to register for the Hajj after Saudi Arabia stopped travel agents from organising pilgrimage trips.

But what should have been a smooth booking process that would take a few minutes turned into a nightmare.

"The website kept crashing on me, and every time I found a suitable package it was either sold out or a message came up that said the...

Overinflated: The Journey of a Humble Tire Reveals Why Prices Are Still So High "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Of course,  noone knows to roll down to the wreakers to pick up a set or so of second hand tires in good condition.  Oh well.  scary place i guess.

This is a really good look see at the induced global disruption we have been suffering.  Absurd really and shows us that we all need to plan for this potentiality.  Understand that any disruption will trigger a disturbance but then small in terms of the overall gross economy.  Is is easy to plan for single disruptions.  Like randomly losing a meat supplier.  Not so when they choose to blow up a bunch of the big ones.

Of course, producers ramp up and become their own middle man and charge downstream which then disrupts the blown up suppliers.  Make India happy and blow up a rag factory.

Irregular economic warfare is not a battle you can ever properly win, but the damage is annoying and it precipatates massive countervailing investment.

The global meddlers have not understood just how much they depend on the peoples forbearance.  Bud id still reeling and may take years to recover.

EPA announces plan to shut down the US power grid by 2030 With mike Adams "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

As you likely know,  the CCP launched a WAR beginning in 2020 against the USA using what has been called irregular warfare as the methodology.  The idea is to attack the population without deploying actual military assets.

We are all now noticing what is happening, but I remain rather unimpressed.  No one really grasps, just how resiliant our global economy happens to be.  what is more, if I can figure it all out and then see it unfold, so can MIL INTEL which is certainly not captured as an institution.  You did not even understand it existed until the Q feed popped up.

It is hard to watch but do remember the future and all this will pass.  And those that played will become the nutless.  The hunt is now beginning.  HEAVEN ON EARTH is the objective, not HELL on EARTH

EPA announces plan to shut down the US power grid by 2030

The EPA announced new rules last week that will render the entire US power grid inoperable by the year 2030. This will be accomplished by forcing nearly all coal and natural gas power facilities to shut down, claiming carbon is a "pollutant."

It's all part of the planned takedown of the USA through multiple vectors: Wide open border, escalation of war with Russia, food infrastructure sabotage and the step-by-step destruction of the fiat currency (dollar).

The Obama / Biden regime is on track to utterly obliterate the USA by 2030 if not sooner, transforming it into a collapsed third world nation occupied by illegals who will replace the vaccine-terminated oblivious masses who once inhabited the nation.

Birkeland currents "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Continuing working through the New science of Heaven by robert Temple.  We have an excellent discussion of Birkeland Currents which have not really been understood and if anything been mostly ignored because we lacked a working model.

The fundamental problem with our observable space is that both positive ions and electrons have powerful repulsion force.  They fly apart unless bound to each other.  It is my contention obviously that DARK MATTER acts to quell this powerful force while not actually binding it.  I use the swork sticky to describe the lining up of an NNP axis with an electron or Ion axis along with the force is applied at a little distance.  the net force is low and also it is easily disturbed by passing energy in the form of photons.

what we now have is both massive and micro flows all through our solar system and even our galaxy which we have seen.  Better yet, all this is sub light.  It is really interesting that theswe also drive our jet streams and that they can be supersonic.  no wonder jet stream gain the speeds they do without any obvious explanation based on aerodynamics.

DARK MATTER is turning out to be the most important element of our existence, just as water is for a fish.  Yet science has convinced itself that what they cannot measure must not exist.  Of really!  That merelymeans you need not look for it.
