Prof Natufe Reiterates Okpe Request For restoration Of Sapele, Warri, Koko Ports, Decries Marginalisation "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

IGHO NATUFE

President General, Okpe Union, Professor Igho Natufe,

LAGOS MAY 17TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The President General, Okpe Union, Professor Igho Natufe, on Tuesday reiterated the Okpe kingdom long-standing request for the restoration of the Sapele, Warri, and Koko ports, calling on President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his incoming Cabinet to pay urgent attention to this request.

The value of these three ports to the Nigerian economy cannot be underestimated. We also request the incoming President and his incoming Cabinet to treat as a matter of grave national urgency, the reconstruction of the Benin-Sapele-Warri expressway.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his recent decision on the teaching of indigenous languages in local government areas across Nigeria.

This gives credence to our age-long agitation for the teaching of Okpe Language in all educational institutions situated in Okpe Kingdom as a critical component of Okpe Identity. We welcome this decision and shall collaborate with other organizations towards its realization in Okpe Nation. As a first step in this direction, I am pleased to announce that NEC has instructed the Education and Culture Committee of the Okpe Union to work out the modalities of awarding post-secondary scholarships/bursaries for deserving Okpe nationals to study Okpe Language and Literature to form the nucleus of future Okpe Language teachers in educational institutions in Okpe Nation.

Professor Natufe spoke at the 93rd anniversary celebration of the founding of the Okpe Union in Lagos.

Learn How Impossibly Close-fitting Parts Are Actually Made "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Most of us have seen those demonstrations of metal parts that mate together so finely that, once together, they have no visible seam at all. But how, exactly, is this done? [Steve Mould] has a video that shows and explains all, and weve never seen the process explained quite like he does.

The secret ingredient is wire EDM, or Electrical Discharge Machining, but thats only one part of the whole. Wire EDM works a bit like a hot-wire cutter slicing through foam, but all by itself thats not enough to produce those impossibly close-fitting parts we love to see.

EDM is capable of astounding precision in part because unlike a cutting tool nothing physically contacts the material. Also, there isnt a lot of friction and heat causing small distortions of the material during the machining process. EDM is as a result capable of fantastically-precise cuts...

Scientists Invent a New Type of Battery The Oxygen-Ion Battery "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers at TU Wien (Vienna) have developed a groundbreaking oxygen-ion battery, which boasts exceptional durability, eliminates the need for rare elements, and solves the problem of fire hazards.

Lithium-ion batteries, while commonplace in todays world powering everything from electric vehicles to smartphones arent necessarily the optimal solution for all applications. Researchers at TU Wien have made a breakthrough by creating an oxygen-ion battery that offers several significant advantages. While it may not match the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, its storage capacity doesnt diminish irreversibly over time, making it capable of an exceptionally long lifespan as it can be regenerated.

Moreover, the fabrication of oxygen-ion batteries doesnt require scarce elements and involves non-combustible materials. The innovative battery concept has already led to a patent application, filed in collaboration with partners in Spain. These oxygen-ion batteries could provide an outstanding solution for large-scale energy storage systems, such as those required to hold electrical energy from renewable sources.

Rimac Nevera electric hypercar sets 23 records in single day, including fastest 0249 mph time "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Times of 060 mph simply arent enough when you get into the peak-performance, hypercar segment of electric vehicles. The Rimac Nevera has already done an excellent job demonstrating that its one of the highest-performing vehicles on the planet, but any doubt should now be dissolved as the electric hypercar smashed through 23 performance records in just a single day, a record in it of itself.

Since its founding in Croatia in 2009, Rimac Automobili has been developing some of the most exciting and technologically advanced electric hypercars. Rimacs first EV, the Concept_One, was introduced in 2016 and is considered one of the worlds fastest production vehicles at the time, although its production consisted of a mere eight vehicles.

Rimacs Concept_Two debuted in 2018 and eventually evolved into its production form, renamed the Nevera. As EV enthusiasts, the Nevera represents much of the potential of electric hypercars, which can significantly outperform ICE counterparts without any emissions.

The Worst Thing Russia Has Done to Socialism "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I had recently a get-together with schoolmates from university. Not with my friends from university, who are a diverse bunch of different ages and professions and with whom I meet usually once/twice a year on a hiking trip or New-year celebrations, but with people with whom I studied chemistry. It was a totally depressing experience for multiple reasons, some deeply personal that I am not inclined to discuss with anyone, ever, and some that I shall discuss in this post.

The discussion did get slightly political and at that point I realized that I am the only person in the group who does not think that socialism is a dirty word describing an inherently ill-thought-out, dysfunctional, and/or evil political system. Everyone else expressed more or less libertarian or conservative-leaning opinions, although I must say not to the extreme sociopathic extent that can be observed in the US political discourse. After a short debate, I have inadvertently killed it outright with what in retrospect was the nuclear option, although it was not intended as such.

I said, Correct me if I am wrong, but at this table, I am the only person who actually has worked in the private sector his whole life and is not and was not employed by the state in an in-principle socialistic enterprise.

What followed was a short awkward silence, re-seating, and a permanent change of subject.

You see, everyone else seated at that table was either an accomplished scientist, a physician, a teacher, a high-ranking military officer, or (usually) a combination of these. Education is free of charge up to a university for anyone willing to take it, even foreigners residing in CZ, as long as they can take the classes in the Czech language. Healthcare is free of charge at the point of receiving, with healthcare insurance being mandatory for the employed and paid for by the state for the unemployed (it could be better by forgoing the middle-man in the form of insurance companies IMO). And the military is entirely financed by our taxes and owned by the state, as it always was.

So, why do these highly educated, highly intelligent, and oftentimes highly accomplished people think that socialism is inherently bad? Probably for the same reasons that I, too, thought so until some fifteen-twelve years ago.

We are the generation who still remembers the times behind the Iron Curtain. And although we did not experience the most brutal phases of that regime, it was still pretty bad at the time we were children. But when I tried to explain that what was wrong with that regime was not the socialism part but the totalitarianism part, it fell on deaf ears. I have managed to disconnect these terms in my mind, they have not. To them, the association between the two is too strong and they are seen as inherently intertwined.

And this might be, paradoxically, exactly because they never worked for a private com...

Nuevas amenazas a comunidades forestales "IndyWatch Feed Noramerica"

CIMACFoto: Hazel Zamora Mendieta

The End of Bakhmut "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Ukrainians are organizing to pull out

By Stephan Bryen | Weapons and Strategy | May 16, 2023

Ukraine is close to retreating from Bakhmut. This could happen anytime now, but it has to happen fast enough before exit routes are closed down. Predictions on a timetable vary, but the Ukrainians should evacuate Bakhmut no later than the weekend, provided they can.

There are still a couple of roads open to exit the city, secured in part by Ukrainian army attacks on the flanks of the city. But these roadways and fields will not stay available if the Wagner forces pour in fast.

In the last night the Wagner forces stormed and took the two most fortified and defensible parts of the Citadel area of the city, pushing the Ukrainians back into the last part of the Citadel which is mainly low rise buildings. These will be hard to hold. There is also fighting around a portion of the citys northwestern sector where the Ukrainians are holding out at the Childrens Hospital (long since evacuated of patients). The purpose of the Ukrainian force is to hold this area to keep the road open out of the city in that direction and to divert Wagner forces from taking over the entire Citadel too quickly.

undefined
Commander in Chief Valery Zaluzhny with Colonel General Aleksandr Syrskyi (left)

The Ukrainians could negotiate a safe withdrawal with the Russians, but it is unlikely that Zelensky will allow that to happen. Furthermore, the so-called leaks about Prigozhins communications with Ukrainian intelligence, which he has heatedly denied, makes it almost impossible for the Wagners to make any deals with their Ukrainian enemies.

The battle for Bakhmut is Zelenskys battle, because he demanded that his army stay there and fight, even after his commanders told him it was too costly and not worth taking needless losses. The battle has raged for eight or nine months and, to a degree, has caused big losses on both sides. Recently his top commanders have put out statements that the fight was worth it. It is likely Zelensky demanded these statements of support.

The big question is, what is next.  The Russians could use their forces to move toward Chasiv Yar and push the Ukrainian army back toward the Dnieper river. The Dnieper is absolutely strategic for Ukraine, an...

West Bank: Hamas list wins key university elections

Results of student elections at An-Najah University in Nablus are read as a reflection of wider Palestinian society

A Hamas-affiliated list has won student elections at a key West Bank university for the first time in 16 years, in the latest sign of dwindling support for the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The Islamic Wafa bloc secured 40 seats out of 81 available in the student council of Nablus An-Najah National University on Wednesday.

Its main rival, the "Shabiba" bloc - the student arm of the PAs ruling party, Fatah - won 38 seats, while three seats went to a list linked with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The An-Najah polls, along with elections at Ramallah's Birzeit University, are considered the bellwether of West Bank politics. The results of these elections are read as a reflection of wider Palestinian society, its position on the PA, and voters' orientations in any broader elections that may be held in the future.

"The exclusionary approach [of the PA] in the West Bank and the repression [of opponents] led people to hold onto their principle more firmly, said Sayel Amara, a lecturer at An-Najah.

Ukraine aid and US stockpiles are running out. Whats next? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos | Responsible Statecraft | May 17, 2023

There might be a massive new Ukraine aid budget debate on the horizon, as Uncle Sam is depleting the last one at a record pace and Pentagon stockpiles are, by all accounts, running low.

According to a new report by Defense One, some $36.4 billion of the $48.9 billion allocated for Ukraine-related military aid since February 2022 has been delivered, contracted, or otherwise committed. There is only $11.3 billion left, and it will run out in four months.

The most recent allocation ($1.2 billion last week) came under the U.S. Security Assistance Initiative, which means the additional air defense systems, artillery rounds, and ammunition that have been promised will be farmed out to U.S. defense contractors and wont be ready for shipment right away. Alternatively, aid has come via the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which sends Ukraine weapons directly from the Pentagons stockpiles. According to the Department of Defense, there have been 37 such drawdowns totaling over $21 billion in weapons and supplies since August 2021 when the U.S. first responded to Russian forces massing along the border with Ukraine.

But now reports indicate that American stockpiles of HIMARS, Javelins, Stinger missiles, and 155 mm artillery rounds have been shrinking since late last year, and arms manufacturers are now scrambling to keep up.

This has led the U.S. to go out on an ammo-raising spree, gathering pledges from allies and partners. Some, like South Korea, have resisted but found a way to comply. According to the Wall Street Journal, Washington has sent Ukraine more than one million rounds of 155 mm caliber ammunition, and allies and partners have contributed more on top of that. Moreover, NATO and European partners are being pressed to send whatever they have from their own stockpiles for Ukraines anticipated counteroffensive.

Business As Usual: Shutdown or Not, the Police State Will Continue to Flourish "IndyWatch Feed War"

There is no more dangerous menace to civilization than a government of incompetent, corrupt, or vile men.

Ludwig von Mises

Once again, the police state is up to its old tricks, stoking tensions over whether or not the government is forced to shut down, even partially, due to a default on the national debt.

Yet while these political games dominate news headlines, send the stock market into a nosedive, and put federal employees at risk of having to work without pay, nothing about these high-handed theatrics will diminish the immediate and very real dangers of the American Police State with its roadside strip searches, government surveillance, biometric databases, citizens being treated like terrorists, imprisonments for criticizing the government, national ID cards, SWAT team raids, censorship, forcible blood draws and DNA extractions, private prisons, weaponized drones, red light cameras, tasers, active shooter drills, police misconduct and government corruption.

Default or not, war will continue. Drone killings will continue. Surveillance will continue. Censorship and persecution of anyone who criticizes the government will continue. The governments efforts to label dissidents as extremists and terrorists will continue.

Police shootings will continue. Highway robbery meted out by government officials will continue. Corrupt government will continue. Profit-driven prisons will continue. And the militarization of the police will continue.

Indeed, take a look at the programs and policies that will not be affected by a government default on its debt leading to a possible shutdown, and youll get a clearer sense of the governments priorities, which have little to do with serving taxpayers and everything to do with amassing money, power and control.

Surveillance will continue unabated. On any given day, whether youre walking through a store, driving your car, checking email, or talking to friends and family on the phone, you can be sure that some government agency, whether the NSA or some other entity, is listening in and tracking your behavior. Police have been outfitted with a litany of surveillance gear, from license plate readers and cell phone tracking devices to biometric data recorders. Technology now makes...

West fueling Ukrainian financial woes Moscow "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | May 17, 2023

Western financial measures are leading Kiev into a sovereign debt crisis, with the burden expected to exceed Ukraines GDP by the end of the year, the Russian ambassador to the UN has warned.

We will hear a lot today about the solidarity of the Western community with Ukraine, the readiness to support it as long as it takes. However, it is necessary to understand that this support is taking Ukraine to the brink, Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Monday. Its foreign debt surged to a record $132 billion, or 89% of GDP in 2022. Its estimated that by the end of this year it will exceed 100%.

The Russian envoy added that the enormous funds allocated to Ukraine by the IMF, the EU, and the US are driving that country into a debt pit, cautioning that ordinary Ukrainians will have to repay the debts.

Commenting on Kievs agreement with US financial company BlackRock to launch the Ukraine Development Fund, Nebenzia noted that the American firm will be in charge of managing the finances.

What essentially is happening under the guise of attracting private investment for large-scale projects in key areas of the economy, is a transfer of state sovereignty to external corporate management of the worlds largest investment fund headquartered in New York, the diplomat stated.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has pushed Western leaders to provide more and more cash to sustain the economy and military. He previously told the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that the country would need $55 billion in 2023 to cover the estimated budget deficit and rebuild critical infrastructure amid the conflict with Russia.

Ukraine has already deferred payments until 2024 on more than $20 billion of debt held by international investors. It is set for foreign debt restructuring next year, with G7 creditors claiming they would only extend their grace period for Ukrainian debt if private creditors agree. The nations budgetary shortfall is estimated to surpass $43 billion in 2023 alone.

Budget Drones in Ukraine Are Redefining Warfare "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The war between Russia and Ukraine is making a lot of high-tech military systems look like so many gold-plated irrelevancies. Thats why both sides are relying increasingly on low-tech alternativesdumb artillery shells instead of pricey missiles, and drones instead of fighter aircraft.

This war is a war of drones, they are the super weapon here, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraines minister of internal affairs, told Newsweek earlier this year.

In early May, Russia attributed explosions at the Kremlin to drones sent by Ukraine for the purpose of assassinating Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader. Ukraine denied the allegation. True, the mission to Moscow was ineffectual, but it is amazing that it could be managed at all.

Like fighter planes, military drones started cheap, then got expensive. Unlike the fighters, though, they got cheap again.

Drones fly slower than an F-35, carry a smaller payload, beckon ground fire, and last mere days before being shot out of the skies. But for the most part, the price is right: Chinas DJI Mavic 3, used by both Russia and Ukraine for surveillance and for delivering bombs, goes for around $2,000. You can get 55,000 of them for the price of a single F-35. Also, theyre much easier to maintain: When they break, you throw them out, and theres no pilot to be paraded through the streets of the enemy capital.

Close up of a tablet screen shows a drone's eye view of a rural scene, with smoke rising from an area. Hands manipulate the DJI drone controller in front of it. Smoke clouds rise on a flatscreen monitor above a struck target, as a Ukrainian serviceman of the Adam tactical group operates a drone to spot Russian positions near the city of Bakhmut, Don...

Ever Again "IndyWatch Feed War"

An unusual and pleasant experience occurred when I attended the webinar book launch of Never Again: Germans and Genocide after the Holocaust, authored by Dr. Andrew Port, Professor of History at Wayne State University. Skeptical of Germanys anxiety in remaining identified with the genocidal Nazi past and its servile attempts to gain Jewish approval by assisting Israel, I audaciously framed a question for Dr. Port, You say never again, but Germany supports Israels genocide of the Palestinian people. How do you reconcile that hypocrisy?

I admit that the question was poorly expressed and can be misinterpreted; Germany does not support Israels genocide of the Palestinian people; Germany has contributed to Israels oppression and simmering genocide of the Palestinian people. In addition to German government reparations payments, estimated at $60 billion, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) sponsors the second-largest scientific research in Israel and German scientists represent the largest group of foreign scientists working in Israel. Between the years 2009-2020, the FRG accounted for 24 percent of Israels arms imports. Included in the weapons deals were submarines, which can be equipped with missiles, and four German-made corvette warships for patrolling the coast, which Germany subsidizes. From Germanys Relations with Israel: Background and Implications for German Middle East Policy, Congressional Research, January 19, 2007.

In 1999 and 2000, in perhaps the most high-profile German arms shipments to Israel since German unification, Germany financed 50% of the costs for three Dolphin-class submarines designed specifically for the Israeli navy. In August 2006, the German government committed to deliver and finance one-third of the costs, approximately 1 billion Euros ($1.3 billion), for two more submarines by 2010.

By not admitting that its assistance to Israel has dual use, Germany flirts between contributing and supporting Israels oppression strengthening Israel economically and militarily and enabling donated and other resources to be made available to oppress the Palestinians. The FRG jumped to supporting the oppression when a majority of legislators in the Bundestag voted in favor of a motion to label the international Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement as an entity that uses anti-Semitic tactics to fulfill its political goals.

Knowing that moderators do not relish provocative q...

How Many People Has the U.S. Government Killed? "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

By David Swanson, World BEYOND War, May 17, 2023

Of course I can only touch on one aspect of recent history here.

Im looking at the new report from Costs of War.

Five years ago, I think Nicolas Davies credibly and conservatively estimated 6 million people directly killed in U.S. wars since 2001 in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Somalia.

What Costs of War has now done is to go with the highly dubious but corporate-respectable estimate of 900,000 directly killed in all of those wars, but leaving out Libya and Somalia. Theyve then documented a pattern of four indirect deaths for every direct death. By indirect deaths, they mean deaths caused by a wars impact on:

1) economic collapse, loss of livelihood and food insecurity;
2)
destruction of public services and health infrastructure;
3)
environmental contamination; and
4) reverberating trauma and violence.

Then theyve multiplied 900,000 by 5 = 4.5 million direct and indirect deaths.

Applying the same ratio to 6 million would have resulted in 30 million direct and indirect deaths.

But, of course, its possible that the common insistence on underestimating direct deaths if Im right about that tells us more about the proportion of deaths that are direct and indirect, rather than about the total number of deaths. If there are, for example, act...

Who Ya Gonna Get to Hammer Nails and Wire up your Internet? "IndyWatch Feed War"

I know, I know, every time I get onto the Zoom Doom thing with the Chronicle for Higher Education, the entire experience is dirty beyong dirty. Today, it was more bizarro people yammering about talent search challenges for getting people to go into higher education.

Three women went into their experiences recruiting and screening potential college hire-ons. The language coming from these people belies the vapidity of our times. Now, well, one woman said, we have 30 people applying for one job, compared to a few years ago when 300 applied for one job. I almost puked.

Of course, she was all about the HR aspect of things, stating that now, she has to go through fewer unskilled or unmatched skilled people than before. As if all these untalented and unqualified people applied for faculty positions. Arrogant, unfeeling, and happy in their roles watching the ship sink.

This entire thing was all about HR-speak, and the shallowness of their conversation and the Dystopian proposals they lay out are just signs of the shifting baseline disorder times.

They are happy about hybrid work, about kicking down the useless 9 to 5 timeframe for work, and are happy that work can be done at home, 8 am to 8 pm, or later, if need be.

Then, two males came on, and they are the Linked-In creeps, which sponsors these talks. Microsoft, now, owns Linked-In. Linked-In does staffing/hiring now, and alas, many of the universities and colleges are using hiring and staffing services like Linked-In to do the real work of hiring and screening.

Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile destroys Kievs US-made Patriot air defense system "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | May 17, 2023

For most of this month, the mainstream propaganda machine has been parroting the same story over and over again  a Russian 9-A-7660 Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic missile was shot down by a US-made Patriot SAM (surface-to-air missile) system. The conclusive evidence cited by the political West is laughable at best, but it was enough to convince those without specific knowledge of how weapons actually work, which includes most of the population. Moscow didnt really comment on the claims. Or to be exact, not until the early hours of May 16, when the actual response came in a very non-rhetorical form.

Namely, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) launched a SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) mission over Kiev, with the operation including two Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which were used to neutralize at least one battery of the Patriot SAM system. While neither side commented on the variant of the destroyed US-made air defense system, video evidence shows that it was most likely one of the latest iterations, the PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement upgrade) that also includes the much-touted CRI (Cost Reduction Initiative) interceptors. The cost of a single CRI missile currently stands at close to $5,300,000, meaning that the 32 interceptors fired by the Kiev regime forces amounted to nearly $170,000,000.

Such a massive quantity of interceptors was still nowhere near enough to stop the Russian hypersonic weapons, although the Neo-Nazi junta announced that it shot down most of the missiles fired by the VKS, including the claim that it allegedly neutralized six Kinzhals, despite the fact that the Russian military used only two during this attack. Although Moscow didnt publicly reveal this, the information is based on the comments from the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu himself. In response to the Kiev regimes reverie, Shoigu stated laconically:

The figures given by the Ukrainians about the interception of Russian missiles are [usually] three times higher than the amount [of weapons] we actually use.

Several military experts estimate that the VKS used a lot of decoys of various types to bait the air defenses in and around Kiev, which would explain the claims of the local authorities that the Russian strike was exceptional in density. The Neo-Nazi junta officials stated that the attack also included cruise missiles and drones. Local air defense forces allegedly shot down 18 missiles and nine drones, including six Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. The claims are widely ridiculed by military experts and numerous Telegram channels, with dozens of m...

Potential Pollinator Hints at New Frontiers in Froggery! "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

If I asked a random person to name a pollinator, most people would probably default to bees. This is perfectly reasonable. Bees play a huge role in human life, and the decline in wild bees has rightfully caused a great deal of alarm. Today, however, were going to step back from the horrors of the world, and instead look at remarkable news from the wonderful world of pollination. Die-hard fans of plant sex will already be aware that pollinators come in all shapes and sizes. There are plenty of insects other than bees that pollinate, and a number of birds and mammals, but I have to admit that until today, I had never heard of a frog acting as a pollinator!

The puzzling appeal of Nazism in the US today "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

We know that Hitler and the Nazis were impressed by racist and eugenics ideas in the US and that they coopted many of those ideas in their theory and program of Aryan supremacy that led to the mass killings of Jews, the Romani people, and others. We now have the reverse phenomenon, where some Americans are taking inspiration from those Nazi ideas and express admiration for Nazis. As a result, we have had various groups of white nationalists and anti-Semites recruiting people to their cause using neo-Nazi rhetoric..

I have been struggling to figure out what exactly is the contemporary appeal of Nazism in the US. Let me be clear about what puzzles me. The appeals to quasi-eugenics ideas such as the great replacement theory according to which there is a deliberate plan to displace white Christians from their dominant position by immigrants and people of color and Jews and other religions, have been around in the US long before the Nazis came to power in Germany.

In many ways, this is a return of an old American political tradition rather than a wholly new phenomenon, but it has taken on a new form and uses a language that must be properly understood if it is to be successfully challenged. Concepts of white supremacy were at the heart of the defense of slavery and central to the Lost Cause myth that justified segregation after the fall of the Confederacy.

The fear of immigrants of different religious traditions also has a long history in the United States; it fueled nativist political party the Know Nothings of the 1850s and the racist rules of the 1924 Immigration Act, which among its many outrages prevented immigration from Asia and remained in effect until 1965. The renowned U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was one of the most distinguished proponents of eugenics, and the idea that immigrants bring crime and disorder dates back to the anti-Irish panics that occurred throughout the 19th century. Anti-Semitism, meanwhile, had been an ugly feature of American political discourse well before the 1913 lynching of Leo Frank prompted the founding of the Anti-Defamation League.

So racists and other bigots do not need to invoke Nazis to their cause since they have a longer homegrown tradition that they could draw upon. In addition, Hitler and Nazism, while they wreaked a lot of suffering and destruction, were ultimately losers and have been repudiated, though not completely eradicated, even in the countries in which they were born. I can understand that some Germans, seeking to reclaim what they think of as past grandeur, yearn to go back to Hitlers time when Germany threatened to conquer the world and would like to have a second chance at succeeding. But why would Americans, especially right-wingers who tend to voi...

Confessions of a CIA Terrorist "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

In 1975, Philip Agee published his book Inside the Company: CIA Diary. In the introduction he wrote,

When I joined the CIA, I believed in the need for its existence. After twelve years with the agency I finally understood how much suffering it was causing, that millions of people all over the world had been killed or had their lives destroyed by the CIA and the institutions it supports. I couldnt sit by and do nothing and so began work on this book.

Enrique Prados book, Black Ops: The Life of a Shadow CIA Warrior (St. Martins Press, 2022), is written for the opposite purpose from Philip Agee. Prado says, This book is my attempt to correct the misperceptions that make the Agency one of the least understood and most mistrusted institutions in America today. The reality we faced on the ground in places from Muslim Africa to East Asia, to our own streets here at home, is one of persistent threats that must be countered to keep our people safe.

Prados memoirs were approved for publication by the CIA. They are self-laudatory and highly critical of restraints on the CIA. They confirm that while the ability to assassinate at will was temporarily restricted, CIA sabotage and paramilitary operations against other nations have continued nonstop.

Background

Enrique (Ric) Prados father lost his business in the Cuban revolution and Ric came to the US as a youth in the early 60s. He grew up in greater Miami. The Vietnam war was raging and his dream was to go to Vietnam.

After high school, Ric enlisted in the US Air Force and received training in rescue operations including parachute jumping and scuba diving. Prados dream was dashed because the Vietnam war was winding down and the US military downsizing.

Prado alludes to his involvement with Cuban American gangs and some troubled years. Then, starting with contract work, Prado began to perform assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Prado and the Contras

Prados timing was late for Vietnam but just right for Central America. In 1979 the Sandinista revolution overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua. As a Spanish speaking Latino, Prado was not a typical Anglo American. He was recruited as a CIA officer responsible for overseeing the development of the Contra army...

Egyptian authorities have arbitrarily detained and tortured women and girls related to suspected militants in the North Sinai region, according to a report published on Wednesday.

Authorities are holding women and girls in incommunicado detention, sometimes for years, partly in an attempt to obtain information on male relatives suspected of links to Sinai Province, the local branch of the Islamic State group.

Many of the women were themselves victims of abuse at the hands of militants, according to the report by Human Rights Watch and the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights (SFHR).

Egyptian authorities have been abusing many women and children in North Sinai to extract information about their suspected ISIS affiliate relatives or pressure these suspects to turn themselves in, said Ahmed Salem, executive director of the Sinai Foundation, using a different acronym for IS.

The authorities should immediately free all women and girls held merely for being related to or associated with male suspects, and investigate torture and other ill-treatment against them.

Drug-Resistant Ringworm Reported in US for First Time; Community Spread Likely "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The newly emerging fungal pathogen is often misidentified in common lab tests:

A dermatologist in New York City has reported the country's first known cases of highly contagious ringworm infections that are resistant to common anti-fungal treatmentsand caused by a newly emerging fungus that is rapidly outstripping other infectious fungi around the world.

In February, the dermatologist reported two cases to health officials in the state, which are described in a brief case study published Thursday in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

[...] Ringwormaka tineas, dermatophytosis, jock itch, and athlete's footis a superficial fungal infection of the skin that causes red, itchy, sometimes scaly circular rashes. There are more than 40 different species of fungi that can cause the infection, which spreads from infected people and animals and also lurks in environments and on common household items, like towels. Ringworm is extremely common and can strike anyone. Usually, it's treatable with over-the-counter creams.

[...] While alarming, the identification of cases in the US is not surprising. The fungus behind the infections is Trichophyton indotineae (previously described as Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VIII), which is a newly emerging fungus globally. Though genetic studies date isolates back to at least 2008 in Australia, a multidrug-resistant lineage seemed to erupt in India between 2017 and 2018. Since then, it has reached epidemic proportions in the subcontinent, replacing other common causes of ringworm, and the pathogen has rapidly emerged in many countries throughout Asia and Europe, and Canada.

[...] The rise of T. indotineae is linked to the abuse of topical treatments that contain egregiously large combinations of steroids and antifungal/antibacterial agents, spurring the development of resistance. This is particularly a problem in India.

OpenAI CEO warns of artificial intelligence's ability to persuade voters: It may 'cause significant harm to the world' "IndyWatch Feed World"

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared before Congress to address the need for new rules to help guide the development of artificial intelligence as the sector continues to grow exponentially. He suggested that while he was committed to working with the government to ensure that humans remain in control of the technology, there was a chance that things could get out of control. As the Daily Mail reports, Altman warned that if left unattended, AI could "go quite wrong," adding that OpenAI sought to "work with the government to prevent that from happening." He admitted that his "worst fear" was that products such as OpenAI's ChatGPT would cause "significant harm to the world."

The Tasmanian AFL Stadium Protest "IndyWatch Feed War"

Every now and then, the sharpened, dedicated means of halting a monstrous white elephant before its birth can work. The wise suddenly seem in charge, conscious and aware that folly can be averted. This, however, is a rare feat indeed. In Tasmania protests of some magnitude against a proposed stadium for Australian Rules Football are starting to have some effect. These have taken place against a dark backdrop: a persistent, critical housing crisis; the presence of homelessness; concerns about food and energy security, and healthcare.

On May 13, thousands gathered on Hobarts parliamentary lawns protesting the $715 million proposal that envisages a redevelopment of the Macquarie Point precinct, a rather disingenuous justification to build a needless 23,000-seat structure on prime real estate using public funds. The package totalling $745 million, also envisages upgrades for York Park (UTAS Stadium) in Launceston.

A conspicuous figure present at the protests was one of Australias more prominent authors, Richard Flanagan. As he wrote in The Age last month, Tasmania, and its population of 550,000 people, has two stadiums where AFL games are routinely played. Tasmania doesnt have a stadium problem. It has a housing and homelessness problem. Rents in Australias poorest state have almost doubled over the last five years; affordable properties were elusive to those on Youth Allowance and JobSeeker.

In its myopic vision and scope, the stadium could be said, argues Flanagan, to be a symbol of government inaction on these issues that blight Australias smallest state. In addition to housing, it has Australias worst public health system, and, with 50 per cent illiteracy, a public education problem.

Also present at the protest was federal Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie, who proved to be both colourful and agitated. Tasmanians, she declared in her address to the crowd, have had a bloody gutful over the stadium and you can stick it up your bum.

In what must surely be considered an act of self-harm, the Tasmanian Liberals also find themselves in a governing minority largely because of Premier Jeremy Rockliffs edifice fetish. A day before the large protests, Liberal backbenchers John Tucker and Lara Alexander quit the party. As Alexander reasoned, The proposed shady deal to build a stadium in Hobart has sharply divided the community. While she did not often agree with her opposite nu...

Bridging the Gap to Nowhere? "IndyWatch Feed World"

Frances Gavins recently declared that the gap between policymaking and academic research has been bridged! As evidence of International Relations newfound influence on the making of U.S. national-security policy, Dr. Gavin points to a handful of scholars who, having crossed the Gap on their own two feet, now occupy prominent government positions. This underscores, he argues, that programs like the International Policy Scholars Consortium and Network and the Nuclear Studies Research Initiativeas well as his own Texas National Security Reviewhave successfully constructed a communications channel between academia and policymakers.

This is a common line of argument among gap-bridgersscholars who emphasize the importance of forging close connections between the academic study of international relations and the world of policymaking. The Bridging the Gap teams recent, thorough review provides a good example. It focuses on opportunities and challenges for connecting academic knowledge to policymakers, while also celebrating the influence of a number of scholars on the policy landscape.

The gap-bridgers do, indeed, have much to celebrate. But I worry that the bridges that they aim to construct and maintain suffer from some critical design flaws. Chief among them: they are made by academics for academics. The engineers ask little of the policymakers on the other side.

Bridge-building must move beyond catering to policymakers. Academics bridge no gaps if they, for example, content themselves with providing validation for policymakers existing beliefs. It means little if someone with an academic background occupies an influential policy position if they perform their role no differently than would any other appointment.

The problem is that gap-bridgers tend to start with the wrong set of questions. Instead of asking What do policymakers want from us? we need to ask ones like What should policymakers want from us?...

Neighboring countries ready to pay Zelensky to stop conflict Seymour Hersh "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | May 17, 2023

Poland is leading a group of European nations that are secretly urging Vladimir Zelensky to find a way to settle the conflict with Russia, veteran journalist Seymour Hersh has reported, citing a knowledgeable American official.

According to US intelligence, other EU countries that want to see an end to the fighting include Hungary, Germany, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Hersh wrote in an article published on his Substack page on Wednesday.

Hungary is a big player in this and so are Poland and Germany, and they are working to get Zelensky to come around, the unnamed official claimed. Those countries have made it clear that Zelensky can keep what hes got if he works up a peace deal even if hes got to be paid off, if its the only way to get a deal.

By keep what hes got, the source was referring to the Ukrainian presidents villa in Italy and interests in an offshore bank, Hersh clarified.

However, Zelensky has so far rejected the proposal, while other major European players France and the UK are too beholden to the Biden administration, which is continuing to back the Ukrainian leader, the official said.

One of the main reasons why Poland and the others want the conflict to end is because the burden of accommodating Ukrainian refugees has become too much for them, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist wrote.

The problem for those countries is how to get the US to stop supporting Zelensky, Hershs source suggested.

He claimed that US intelligence is well aware that Ukraine is running out of money and that the next four or months are critical. And Eastern Europeans are talking about a deal.

However, he added that its not clear to the intelligence community what the president and his foreign policy aides in the White House know of the reality.

The US is still training Ukrainians how to fly our F-16s that will be shot down by Russia as soon as they get into the war zone. The mainstream press is dedicated to Biden and the war, and Biden is still talking about the Great Satan in Moscow while the Russian economy is doing great, the official explained.

Russia has repeatedly stated that its ready to resolve the conflict at the negotiating table. However, it did not receive any proposals from Ukraine and its Western backers that it could consider reasonable.

Zelensky has been promoting his ten-point peace plan, which calls for Russian forces to withdraw to borders claimed by Ukraine, to pay reparations, and to submit to war-crime tribunals.

Moscow has rejected the plan as unacceptable, saying it ignores the reality on the ground and is actually a sign of Kievs unwillingness to solve the crisis through diplomatic means.

US Gov offers a $10M reward for a Russian ransomware actor "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The US government is offering a $10M reward for Russian national Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev (30) charged for his role in ransomware attacks

The US Justice Department charged Russian national Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev (30), aka Wazawaka, m1x, Boriselcin, and Uhodiransomwar, for his alleged role in multiple ransomware attacks.

The DoJ unsealed two indictments charging the man with using three different ransomware families in attacks aimed at numerous victims throughout the United States. The attacks hit law enforcement agencies in Washington, D.C. and New Jersey, as well as organizations in the healthcare and other sectors nationwide.

According to the indictment obtained in the District of New Jersey, from at least as early as 2020, Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev, aka Wazawaka, aka m1x, aka Boriselcin, aka Uhodiransomwar, allegedly participated in conspiracies to deploy three ransomware variants. reads the press release published by DoJ. These variants are known as LockBit, Babuk, and Hive, and Matveev transmitted ransom demands in connection with each.

According to the DoJ, total ransom demands allegedly made by the members of these three global ransomware campaigns to their victims is greater than $400 million. The total victim ransom payments amount to as much as $200 million.

On or about June 25, 2020, Matveev and his LockBit coconspirators targeted a law enforcement agency in Passaic County, New Jersey. On or about May 27, 2022, the man and his Hive coconspirators allegedly hit a nonprofit behavioral healthcare organization in New Jersey. On April 26, 2021, Matveev and his Babuk coconspirators hit the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.

The Russian citizen has been charged with conspiring to transmit ransom demands, conspiring to damage protected computers, and intentionally damaging protected computers. If convicted, the man could face a sentence of over 20 years in prison.

The man is suspected to be living in Russia and is operating from that country. Clearly, due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis, its unlikely that Russia will capture the man to extradite him to the United States.

A Jordanian court has charged MP Imad al-Adwan with transporting weapons in his car while travelling to the Israeli-occupied West Bank last month.

Adwan was an MP at the time of his arrest by Israeli border guards at the Allenby crossing in April, who found a cache of guns in his car.

Poor Peterson, beset on all sides "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ive said before that Jordan Peterson is a bad biologist, not any kind of biologist at all, and especially not an evolutionary biologist. When someone knowledgeable in the field looks at his expertise, hes not even a good clinical psychologist. What, exactly, is he supposed to be good at? We can definitely say it sure isnt ancient languages and the Bible.

I discuss in detail how Peterson routinely tries to use ancient myths and the Bible to support his various noxious viewpoints, despite the fact that he has absolutely no understanding of the academic study of these subjects and his interpretations of them display a profound ignorance of the historical and cultural contexts from which they originate and how ancient audiences understood them.

Peterson frequently makes etymological arguments, which Ive always found silly and are typically used creatively by know-nothings to make rhetorical points. Fake etymologies are common on the internet. The annoying thing about Peterson is that he uses them to sound scholarly, but hes using them in bizarre ways.

By the way, sin. Theres two derivations of the word sin: one is chet, which is from the Hebrew, and the other is hamartia, from the Greek. And they both are archery terms that mean to miss the target.

And then he goes on to babble about sports arenas and crowds and I dont know what, all while gesturing madly. Its weird display. Very cringe.

But hes getting everything wrong! Not that that would slow him down in the slightest.

In these few short sentences, Peterson has already made three serious errors. First, he mispronounces the Hebrew word (e)a noun derived from the verbal root (--)as /tt/ (pronouncing the at the beginning like the ch in cheese) when it should actually be pronounced /t/. This is a pronunciation mistake that no one who actually knows anything about Hebrew would make, since the sound /t/ does not exist in ancient or modern Hebrew. By mispronouncing the word in this blatant manner, Peterson clearly demonstrates that he does not even know the Hebrew alphabet.

Second, Peterson claims that these words are derivations of the word sin, but th...

Ice jams, snowmelt result in catastrophic flooding in Alaska "IndyWatch Feed World"

On Sunday, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration after ice jams and snowmelt led to significant flooding in several communities along the Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers this past weekend. A major ice jam on the Yukon River, which originates in the coastal mountains of Canada and flows nearly 2,000 miles northwest into the Bering Sea, has created catastrophic flooding in several riverfront communities. "Ice jams are caused when ice breaks up on the river, begins to flow downstream but then gets 'stuck' and acts as a dam. This causes the water in the river to rise, usually quite rapidly, and gives very little notice to the flood threat," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said. This time of the year is known as the "spring breakup" in Alaska, and while that may sound like the name of a rom-com movie, FEMA officials say it's no laughing matter, especially if you live in The Last Frontier. In April and May, most of the river ice in Alaska thaws and breaks up into...

Congress recently voted against pulling American troops out of Somalia. Officially, U.S. forces number 900 and are there in an advisory role to help the government of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud combat terrorist forces such as Al-Shabab.

Yet our guest today states that U.S. boots on the ground in Somalia are doing nothing but serving as a recruiting tool for jihadists, their presence provoking widespread resentment among the people of the resource-rich but war-torn African nation.

Ann Garrison is a journalist and a contributing editor to The Black Agenda Report. You can also find her at The Grayzone and on Pacifica Radio. Her latest article, Ilhan Omar Voted to Withdraw from Somalia, but Shes No Anti-Imperialist, assesses the Minnesota Congresswomans record on opposing U.S. actions in the Horn of Africa.

Garrison notes that Washington has little interest in genuinely opposing radical jihadist groups in the region and is instead focused on maintaining control of a strategically important part of the world. Somalia sits on the Red Sea, across a narrow strait from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Around 40% of world seaborne trade passes by its waters on the way to or from the Suez Canal. Moreover, the nation is believed to possess over 100 billion barrels of untapped offshore oil reserves. Securing African resources is an existential imperative for the U.S., Garrison said.

The United States has spent the past decade bullying and intimidating countries in North East Africa. From the bombing of Libya and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 to its attempts to isolate Eritrea economically and politically to bombing Somalia and supporting the insurgency of the Tigrayan Peoples Liberation Front against Ethiopia, Washingtons actions have led many in the region to sour on the United States altogether.

Into this void has stepped China and, to a lesser extent, Russia. Massive Chinese infrastructure projects are everywhere in the region, as Chinese companies build railways, hospitals, schools and roads. African countries have, by and large, also refused to follow the U.S. line on the Ukraine War, instead opting to stay neutral rather than condemn and oppose Moscow. The U.S. has attempted to push China out of the region, but, as Garrison said, China isnt going anywher...

Check the findings of Manning's 2013 court martial. Advanced Plastic Recycling is Highly Suspect of Greenwashing "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

American Chemistry Council (ACC) promotes crazy stuff!

Stop chemical recycling, processes that can generate even more pollution
.
.
From the Climate Reality Project, May 16, 2023
.
.
Advanced recycling and chemical recycling are the two new greenwashed terms in town. The process primarily involves converting plastic into fuel. A pretty expensive and roundabout way of burning fossil fuels, if you ask us.

The chemicals industry is lobbying hard to get two types of these plastic-to-fuel incinerators pyrolysis and gasification exempt from regulations under the Clean Air Act. And the American Chemistry Council (ACC) recently announced it would try to introduce legislation that would promote these false solutions to our plastic waste crisis.

This is incredibly dangerous, given that the US EPA reportedly found that pollution from an associated plastic-based fuel poses a one-in-four risk of cancer.

Letting these incinerators escape the Clean Air Act would particularly harm the low-income communities and communities of color where most pyrolysis and gasification facilities exist, and where they are likely to be sited in the future. It would also set a terrible precedent, encouraging other polluting industries to pursue their own special exemptions.

Take action now. Demand that your representatives call on the Biden Administration to reject these proposed exemptions under the Clean Air Act and vote NO on any such legislation that promotes these false solutions to our plastic waste crisis.

CATL, a Chinese battery manufacturer, has created a condensed battery that it says could help power electric aircraft while meeting the required safety and energy standards.

The company claims the batterys energy density is 500 watt-hours per kilogram, making it much more robust than it looks. This means that the battery can push out more power from a lighter component than the current options.

The belief is that condensed batteries will open the door to improved power systems for both electric cars and even the aviation field. Finding more efficient ways to handle power generation while also remaining lightweight is essential for both these fields, especially as electric cars try to offer longer ranges.

Those saying Israel's latest assault in Gaza was just a bleeding exercise in futility fail to understand the real purpose behind it.

Polls released by major Israeli channels after the ceasefire, which was signed on Saturday night, prove beyond doubt the operation achieved its main goal from the governments perspective: the popularity of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus coalition was on the rise.

Netanyahu was trailing in polls to his opposition rivals days before the bombing campaign, dubbed Operation Shield and Arrow, was launched on 9 May with a series of overnight assassinations.

Five days of Gaza bleeding - in which 33 Palestinians, including six children, were killed - and the ongoing bleeding of Netanyahus coalition was miraculously cured. Mission accomplished.

Netanyahu has restored his image as Mr Security - not the ailing prime minister accused of leading his country into a dictatorship with his governments controversial judicial overhaul plan.

Judge Sides With YouTube in Mexican Movie Tycoons Piracy Lawsuit "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

YouTubeTwo years ago, Spanish-born movie tycoon Carlos Vasallo sued YouTube at a Florida federal court over various piracy-related claims.

The actor and producer own the rights to the worlds largest collection of Mexican and Latin American movies, many of which are illegally shared on YouTube.

The lawsuit accused YouTube of not doing enough to stop people from uploading pirated content. Those allegations arent new, but the movie tycoon also said that YouTube would not allow him to join the Content ID copyright protection program unless he agreed to specific terms, including a revenue share agreement.

Vasallo refused these terms and chose to send standard DMCA notices instead. YouTube processed them, as it should, but the movie tycoon complained that this did little to stop pirates. New copies were constantly uploaded and banned users reportedly returned under new aliases.

Motions of Summary Judgment

YouTube and Google vehemently disagreed with the copyright infringement allegations and filed a motion to dismiss. This was partially successful as the Florida federal court dropped the antitrust claims, but the infringement allegations remained.

As the case progressed, both parties submitted motions for summary judgment, which were filed under seal.

The movie tycoon alleged that, because YouTube only took down reported videos and failed to use its piracy filtering technology to find and voluntarily remove similar videos, the platform is liable for direct and secondary copyright infringement.

YouTube also submitted a motion for summary judgment to establish that it does nothing wrong. According to the company, the DMCA doesnt require platforms to proactively monitor uploads, on the contrary. Also, the movie tycoon failed to provide any evidence that YouTube was aware of non reported infringing videos.

Both motions for summary judgment landed on the desk of Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres, who issued a detailed report and recommendations yesterday. The Judge sides with YouTube and concludes that since the movie tycoon has no triable case, the lawsuit should be closed.

Monitoring Uploads

Under the DMCA, platforms such as YouTube are required to respond to takedown requests. In this case, there is little doubt that the video platform did so. However, the movie tycoon argued that it should have used its piracy filtering technology to find similar videos and remove these as well.

Democrats Flip Jacksonville in Blow to DeSantis "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Jacksonville, FL, used to be the largest city in the United States with a Republican mayor. Following the unexpected victory of Democrat Donna Deegan in the citys mayoral election, that distinction will soon go to Mattie Parker (R), the mayor of Fort Worth, TX.

Love won tonight, and we made history, Deegan tweeted following her win. We have a new day in Jacksonville because people chose unity over division creating a broad coalition of people across the political spectrum that want a unified city.

https://twitter.com/DonnaDeegan/status/1658657401896042496?s=20

Deegans upset victory is about much more than who controls Jacksonville. After years of stinging losses, it is a sign of hope for the states Democrats, who had seen their fortunes decline in recent years as Florida moved from a purple state to a solidly Republican one.

With regard to national implications, the main takeaway from the election is that it is a defeat for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and a blow to his presidential ambitions. When he officially announces his bid for the White House, perhaps as early as later this month, DeSantis will make the case that he should be the Republican nominee because he is a fighter and because of his electability.

Both of these selling points have now taken a hit.

So far, he has looked weak and reluctant to battle back when former President Donald Trump and his allies have attacked him.

But, until last night, his electability was undeniably an asset. In 2022, DeSantis won Florida by almost 20 percent in a shock to pundits who had predicted a much closer race. That included a 12-point margin of victory in Duval County, which is almost entirely comprised of Jacksonville.

Now, in six months, Democrats have flipped the script. Deegan beat her DeSantis-endorsed opponent Daniel Davis by four percent, a 16-point swing.

Fairly or not, the citys election will also be seen as a referendum on DeSantiss...

Lead Vocal Tracks in Popular Music Go Quiet "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Lead Vocal Tracks in Popular Music Go Quiet:

A general rule of music production involves mixing various soundtracks so the lead singer's voice is in the foreground. But it is unclear how such track mixing and closely related lyric intelligibility has changed over the years.

Scientists from the University of Oldenburg in Germany carried out an analysis of hundreds of popular song recordings from 1946 to 2020 to determine the lead vocal to accompaniment ratio, or LAR. Their results appear in JASA Express Letters, published on behalf of the Acoustical Society of America by AIP Publishing, and show that, contrary to expectations, the LAR for popular music decreased over the decades in question. This means that, relative to their bands, lead singers are getting quieter.

An earlier study suggested that lead vocals were mixed at a higher level than other instruments, but it looked at songs that were not fully representative of popular Western music. The current study rectified this by considering the four highest-ranked songs from the Billboard Hot 100 chart for each year from 1946 to 2020.

[...] "Our analysis showed a significant downward trend in the LAR from about 5 decibels in 1946 to approximately 1 decibel in 1975, after which time the LAR remained constant," Gerdes said.

The investigators wished to determine whether LAR values changed over time to improve the intelligibility of lyrics or if changes in music technology were involved. Electrical amplification of instruments might, for example, be a factor, as could multitrack and stereophonic recording technology. They found that changes in music technology appear to be behind the observed decrease in LAR until 1975.

"Another possibility involves the stylistic evolution within popular music," author Kai Siedenburg said.

How the Design of Corners Affects Speed "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Vehicle turning a smaller corner. (Source: Corner Design For All Users 2020.)

Speed matters, and it particularly matters at intersections where vehicles and pedestrians interact. We want to let you in on a design feature that might influence speed more than you realize: corners. Once you see it, you cant unsee it, and youll be amazed and dismayed to see how often corners are designed for speed, not safety. The good news is, this can be fixed.

The Connection Between Corner Radii and Speed

All street corners depend on a design parameter called the corner radius, which is the curvature of the corner. The corner radius plays a crucial role in determining the safety of an intersection. Sharp corners have small or tight corner radii. These corners require drivers to slow down to take a turn safely.  On the other hand, wide corners have large corner radii and they encourage high speeds when turning.

In many cities and towns, to facilitate turning when driving, intersections have been designed to be wider than necessary. As illustrated in the image below, large corner radii allow vehicles to make a turn without reducing their speed. This creates unsafe conditions for pedestrians, as drivers are less likely to yield to pedestrians and...

Clyburns Role in South Carolina Redistricting May Be Examined as Supreme Court Hears Racial Gerrymandering Case "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Supreme Court said Monday that it will hear oral arguments in a South Carolina redistricting case where the NAACP is challenging the states Republican plan as racially motivated.

The role of the states most powerful Democrat, U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, is likely to play an important part in the discussions, legal experts said.

In 2021, South Carolina Republicans reshaped the voting map, taking a district that had been in the hands of a Democrat as recently as 2018 and making it a much safer seat for the incumbent Republican. The NAACP brought a suit against the effort, and in January, three Democratic-appointed judges ruled in the groups favor.

The Supreme Court could decide to restore the map that the Republicans drew or order the legislature to create a new map. The case comes after a series of rulings from the high court that have made partisan gerrymandering easier, though the court has still deemed redistricting predominantly based on race to be illegal. Legal experts said this week that the South Carolina case will help define the limits of how much a legislature can consider race as it draws new maps.

South Carolina Republicans have defended their efforts, saying they were not motivated to dilute Black political power in the state. Lawyers for state Republican leaders argued during the trial that they did not consider race in making their map. They also contended that their map could not have targeted Black voters because they worked with Clyburn, one of the most powerful Black Democrats in the country.

This month, ProPublica added new detail to this account, reporting that Clyburn had been more involved in the process than previously known. He recommended moving Black and white voters in such a way that made his district politically safer but hurt Black Democrats.

Iranians buy real estate in Damascus

There has been a marked increase in property purchases in Damascus and its surrounding areas due to investment from Iranian individuals and companies, according to a report from London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi

Southern areas of the Syrian capital and the nearby suburb of Ghouta have seen a particular spike in sales.

The investment from Iranian companies is linked to the recent restoration of relations between other Arab nations and the Syrian government, sources told the news outlet.

Arab League foreign ministers earlier this month decided to readmit Syria after more than a decade of suspension, consolidating a regional push to normalise ties with President Bashar al-Assad.

Iran has long supported the Syrian government during the civil war that broke out in 2011, after Assad cracked down violently on peaceful protesters.

Stephen Kapos remembers hiding from the Nazis in Hungary and hearing his father's recollections of Belsen-Bergen (MEE/Hossam Sarhan)

If there is one issue that Keir Starmer has ruthlessly used to define his leadership of the British Labour Party and convince voters it is under new management after the Jeremy Corbyn era, it is antisemitism.

Rightly or wrongly, the issue just will not go away. It has been invoked to explain Starmers refusal to allow the former leader to stand as a Labour candidate at the next election - against all the rules of party democracy that the MP for Islington North upholds.

It was invoked in withdrawing the whip from Diane Abbott, after the publication of a letter in The Observer in which the longtime Labour MP drew a distinction between antisemitism and the racism suffered by people of colour, a comparison for which she later apologised.

It is invoked, too, by what remains of the left in the Labour Party. Left-wing campaign group Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) maintains with some justification that Jews are five times more likely to face charges of antisemitism than non-Jewish members.

The point that JVL, a group that is open about its support for Palestinian rights, is making is that Starmers purge is directed at anti-Zionists in the party under the fig leaf of an ever-elastic and catch-all definition of antisemitism, which is being...

Sorority sisters file lawsuit against Kappa Kappa Gamma for allowing 6'2 trans-identified male with 'visible erections' into their Wyoming sorority "IndyWatch Feed World"

Sorority sisters at the University of Wyoming have filed a lawsuit against the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity for allowing a trans-identified male, who allegedly becomes "sexually aroused" in their presence, to move into the sorority in the fall semester. The complaint filed on Monday by seven past and present sorority members in the US District Court of Wyoming accuses Kappa Kappa Gamma of "betrayal" and "breaking their bylaws" which state that the sorority is a "single-sex organization" which must be preserved, Cowboy State Daily reports. The girls allege that Artemis Langford, a 6'2' biological male weighing 260lbs, has had "visible erections through his leggings" and "repeatedly questions the women about what vaginas look like, breast cup size, whether women were considering breast reductions and birth control,'" according to the complaint obtained by the outlet.

False Alarms "IndyWatch Feed World"

Using entirely bogus pretexts, the police are deploying oppressive new laws to shut down peaceful protest.

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 12th May 2023

The more unequal a society becomes, the more oppressive its laws must be. This, I think, explains new acts that would not be out of place in a police state. So vague and broad are the powers granted to the police under last years Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act and this years Public Order Act that it is no longer clear where their abuse begins and ends.

At two oclock on the morning of the coronation, the Metropolitan Police, using the Police Act, arrested three people in Soho for carrying rape alarms. The police claimed they were acting on intelligence that rape alarms might be used to frighten the horses that would later be parading elsewhere.

The people they arrested were volunteers working for Westminster city council as Night Stars, helping to stop the sexual harassment of women. They give rape alarms to women who might need them. The alarms are funded by the Home Office. Night Stars volunteers wear pink tabards emblazoned with the logo of their partner organisation the Metropolitan Police. Yet the three volunteers who were arrested were cuffed for three hours and held for 14 before being released on bail.

Why would the police arrest their own partners? What was the intelligence on which they were acting? If they were really worried about rape alarms being misused, why did they not simply confiscate them? It looks to me like the old paso doble between police and press. Two weeks before, the Mail on Sunday had run a front-page story headlined Extremists vile plot to spook Kings horses with rape alarms: Fears protesters planning to sabotage Charles Coronation could cause serious injuries or even deaths as eco-zealot groups set to join forces to cause chaos.

The Mail produced precisely zero evidence that environmental or republican activists were planning such a thing. But if the police wanted to find people carrying these devices, they knew where to go. The arrests were used by the Mail as a vindication of its story. Though Westminster council had explained t...

The US has urged calm and restraint ahead of an expected march by thousands of Israeli ultra-nationalists through the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem's Old City on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the State Department's principal deputy spokesperson, Vedant Patel, said Washington would continue to urge the parties to refrain from actions and rhetoric and activities that would inflame tensions.

The Jerusalem Flag March, also known as the Jerusalem Day March, is an annual event that takes place in Jerusalem, particularly in the Old City.

The event is held on Jerusalem Day, which marks the Israeli conquest and occupation of East Jerusalem during the 1967 war.

Patel said the US believes in the right of individuals to express themselves and to do so peacefully while urging all parties to maintain calm, to exercise restraint and avoid any escalation of tensions.

This year, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who h...
