Here's Why Big Pharma Spends More On Ads Pushing Lower Benefit Drugs "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Big pharma spends more money on advertising for drugs that have lower health benefits for patients, according to a study published in JAMA on Tuesday, shedding new light on the almost uniquely American practice amid fierce debate over whether direct-to-consumer prescription drug ads should be banned. The proportion of advertising spending allocated to direct-to-consumer ads was an average of 14.3 percentage points higher for drugs with a low added benefit compared to those with a high added benefit, according to the peer-reviewed analysis of the 150 best-selling branded prescription drugs. Manufacturers of the top six best-selling drugs spent the bulk of their promotional budgetsmore than 90%targeting consumers directly rather than clinicians for a range of treatment options for conditions including HIV, multiple sclerosis and numerous cancers. The findings could suggest pharma firms are aiming promotional dollars directly towards consumers ... as part of a "strategy to drive patient demand for drugs that clinicians would be less likely to prescribe," said the study's lead author Michael DiStefano. Just two countries in the world allow drug makers to market prescription medications directly to consumers: the U.S. and New Zealand. Most countries prohibit directly advertising prescription medications to the public, something the WHO says influences both people and, indirectly, the medical professionals treating them, making it "harder to make decisions on evidence based medicine."

'Patient influencers' paid by Big Pharma to mislead followers: report "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

There's no better way to reach an audience today than through social media and Big Pharma is well aware of that. The video-sharing platform TikTok, for example, is being flooded with videos of users testifying to wellness through prescription drugs, with hashtags like #adhd (22.3B views), #ozempic (675.1M views) and #wegovy (259.3M views) consistently trending. Now, experts are warning about this misleading tactic by drugmakers, in paying popular social media users to espouse their products under the guise of honest reviews, in a new study published this week in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. These so-called patient influencers, or patient "advocates," are social media influencers who use their platform to promote pharmaceutical medications and/or medical devices. Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder analyzed 26 recent interviews with patient influencers, who had been diagnosed with conditions such as lupus, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, asthma, HIV, celiac disease, chronic migraines and perimenopause. The majority (69%) had previously collaborated with a pharmaceutical company in some way. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that influencers must disclose if they have been paid by using hashtags, such as by adding #ad or #sponsored to related posts, while the Food and Drug Administration has rules and regulations regarding what can be said on social posts. Nevertheless, many consumers fail to decipher a sponsored ad from genuine peer-to-peer advice.

Psychoactive Drugs Often Linked to Mass Shootings "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

We urgently need a national debate about guns. But we also urgently need a national debate about the epidemic of mood-altering drugs being prescribed to young Americans. Mass shooters in the United States tend to be young, obsessive, male loners and many have been prescribed psychoactive drugs. For example, Eric Harris, one of the two shooters at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, in 1999which ushered in the current spate of mass shootingswas on the psychotropic drug Luvox. Prescribing information for the antidepressant says, "Close supervision of patients and in particular those at high risk should accompany drug therapy." Jeff Weise, who fatally shot his grandfather, his grandfather's girlfriend, and then seven others at the Red Lake Senior High School in Minnesota in 2005, was on the well-known antidepressant Prozac. Two years later, Cho Seung-Hui, who perpetrated the Virginia Tech mass shooting, also was found to be on psychoactive antidepressants. Jeanne Stolzer, associate professor of child and adolescent development at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, observes that "despite the multitude of international drug regulatory warnings on all classifications of psychiatric medications citing adverse reactions such as suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, violence, and psychosis, not one local, state, or federal commission has investigated the correlation between the mass shootings in America and the use of psychiatric medications."

Note: Although Epoch Times is often deemed as a controversial media platform, this article raises legitimate questions on an important topic seldom discussed. Read a revealing article that investigates the alarming adverse events associated with common mood-altering medications prescribed for those struggling with mental illness. Do COVID-19 vaccine mandates still make sense? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

<p style= "text-align: justify; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; margin: 0 0 11pt 0;"> Visitors to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington, D.C. ... must show a guard proof that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Such demands were common around the world a year ago. But by now, almost everyone has had natural infections with SARS-CoV-2 or been vaccinated against the coronavirussometimes bothand it's become clear that vaccine-induced immunity quickly loses its ability to prevent infection and spread of the latest variants. <strong>Some now say the mandates are outdated. The persistent requirements are "baffling to say the least," says Heidi Larson, an anthropologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and director of the Vaccine Confidence Project. She spoke at a major infectious disease meeting this year that required all attendees to show they had had two doses of a vaccinewith no need for a recent booster. "It's not like it's going to mitigate the spread." Larson and other vaccine acceptance researchers who spoke to Science all emphasize that COVID-19 vaccines clearly prevent severe disease, but they worry maintaining the mandates could undermine future public health efforts. "Having to show these old vaccination proofs or certificates really doesn't make sense, and it could cause harm, because people might lose trust in the competence of the organization," says University of Konstanz psychologist Katrin Schmelz. Compared with Europe and Asia, the United States appears to be holding on to vaccine mandates more tightly.</p> <p style= "text-align: justify; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; margin: 0 0 11pt 0;"> <strong>Note:</strong> Many people are questioning the legitimacy of vaccine mandates, regardless of their stance on the efficacy and safety of the COVID vaccines. Immunity acquired from a Covid infection is as protective as vaccination against severe illness and death, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Immunity acquired from a Covid infection provides strong, lasting protection against the most severe outcomes of the illness, according to research published Thursday in The Lancet protection, experts say, that's on par with what's provided through two doses of an mRNA vaccine. Infection-acquired immunity cut the risk of hospitalization and death from a Covid reinfection by 88% for at least 10 months, the study found. "This is really good news, in the sense that protection against severe disease and death after infection is really quite sustained at 10 months," said the senior study author, Dr. Christopher Murray ... at the University of Washington. The study was the largest meta-analysis to date to look at immunity following infection. It included 65 studies from 19 countries and compared the risk of developing Covid again in people who had recovered from infections to people who hadn't been infected through September. The immunity generated from an infection was found to be "at least as high, if not higher" than that provided by two doses of an mRNA vaccine, the authors wrote. While Murray and Wachter agreed that vaccination remains the safest route, having a past Covid infection should at least be considered in policymaking decisions going forward, such as vaccination requirements, they said. "What Europe did with this evidence made a lot of sense, which is where evidence of past infection was seen as essentially equal to vaccination in terms of requirements to go into events or for employment," Murray said.

Note: It's worthy of mentioning that much of the media previously dismissed the effectiveness of natural immunity to protect against COVID, with mainstream media platforms blatantly claiming that natural immunity is "not panning out" and "comes at a cost." Japan says 1.5m people are living as recluses after Covid "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Almost 1.5 million people of working age in Japan are living as social recluses, according to a government survey, with about a fifth of cases attributed to the pressures unleashed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Large numbers of hikikomori said they had begun retreating from mainstream society due to relationship issues and after losing or leaving their jobs. A significant proportion 20.6% said their predicament had been triggered by changes in lifestyle imposed during the pandemic. Hikikomori classed as people who withdraw from society, spending all or almost all of their time isolated at home account for 2% of people aged 15-62. The cabinet office surveyed 30,000 people between the ages of 10 and 69. The poll found that just over a fifth of respondents aged 15-39 had been socially isolated. More than 20% said they had experienced problems with interpersonal relationships, while just over 18% cited the pandemic. Among people in the 40-64 age range, 44.5% said their behaviour had been triggered by leaving their jobs, followed by 20.6% who cited the pandemic. Japan did not enforce UK-style lockdowns to help contain the spread of the virus, but people were asked to avoid unnecessary outings ... and some employers and universities encouraged teleworking and remote learning. On streets that would normally have been teeming with people there was a dramatic drop in footfall after restaurants, bars and other sectors of the nighttime economy were asked to stop serving alcohol and close early, or face fines.

South Korea to give $490 allowance to reclusive youths to help them leave the house "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

South Korea is to offer reclusive youths a monthly living allowance of 650,000 won ($490) in order to encourage them out of their homes, as part of a new measure passed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The measure also offers education, job and health support. The condition is known as "hikikomori", a Japanese term that roughly translated means, "to pull back". The government wants to try to make it easier for those experiencing it to leave the house to go to school, university or work. Included in the programme ... is a monthly allowance for living expenses for people aged between nine and 24 who are experiencing extreme social withdrawal. It also includes an allowance for cultural experiences for teenagers. About 350,000 people between the ages of 19 and 39 in South Korea are considered lonely or isolated about 3% of that age group according to the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Secluded youth are often from disadvantaged backgrounds and 40% began living reclusively while adolescents, according to a government document outlining the measures. The document includes case studies that describe young people using reclusiveness as a way to cope. One young person describes their depression as a result of domestic violence. "When I was 15 years old, domestic violence made me depressed so much that I began to live in seclusion." Another said that they had become a recluse when their family "went bankrupt".

Note: A deeper perspective on this social crisis is how lockdown policies significantly deteriorated youth mental health during the lockdown, as seen in a new University of Cambridge paper. This paper is the first longitudinal study to trace the mental health effects of lockdowns and social isolation on younger children. The Most Dangerous International Treaty Ever Proposed "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Two international legal agreements [are] currently working their way through the World Health Organisation: a new pandemic treaty, and amendments to the 2005 International Health Regulations, both due to be put before the governing body of the WHO, the World Health Assembly, in May next year. As concerned scholars and jurists have detailed, these agreements threaten to fundamentally reshape the relationship between the WHO, national governments, and individuals. They would hardwire into international law a top-down supranational approach to public health in which the WHO, acting in some cases via the sole discretion of one individual, its Director General (DG), would be empowered to impose sweeping, legally binding directions on member states and their citizens. A global system for digital 'health certificates' for verification of vaccine status or test results would be routinised, and a bio-surveillance network ... would be embedded and expanded. The WHO has fallen largely under the control of private capital and other vested interests. Over 80 percent of the WHO's budget is now 'specified' funding by way of voluntary contributions typically earmarked for specific projects or diseases in a way that the funder specifies. The WHO [is] ordaining itself as the exclusive global controller not just of the identification of pandemics and potential pandemics but of the design and execution of pandemic responses, while also granting itself a vast health surveillance network and a global workforce.

Scientific Paper on Children, Wireless Technology, and Health Effects by Renowned Experts in Environmental Health "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

A state-of-the-art assessment on the scientific evidence of wireless radiation impacts on children's health published in the journal Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care concludes that the medical community has a critical role to play to prevent harm from wireless radiation. Written by distinguished experts in medicine, epidemiology, toxicology, physics, biochemical engineering and public health ... the paper references numerous studies that associate wireless exposure to effects including oxidative stress, DNA damage, cardiomyopathy, carcinogenicity, sperm damage, memory damage and neurological effects. Pregnancy, infancy and childhood are periods of critical susceptibility, especially for the brain, which is rapidly developing. "Current government safety limits are outdated and do not reflect the latest science nor the way children use wireless technology today," stated Linda Birnbaum Ph.D, former Director of the National Toxicology Program. Theodora Scarato, Executive Director of Environmental Health Trust, highlighted the international policies to reduce children's exposure, such as France and Belgium's bans on the sale of cell phones designed for young children and the numerous countries that have restrictions on Wi-Fi exposure in classrooms. She stated that, "US government limits allow radiation emissions 10 to 100 times higher than numerous countries such as Switzerland, Italy, China, Russia and India."

The Pesticide Industry's Playbook for Poisoning the Earth "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In 2013, the European Union called for a temporary suspension of the most commonly used neonicotinoid-based products on flowering plants, citing the danger posed to bees an effort that resulted in a permanent ban in 2018. In the U.S., however, industry dug in, seeking not only to discredit the research but to cast pesticide companies as a solution to the problem. Lobbying documents and emails ... show a sophisticated effort over the last decade by the pesticide industry to obstruct any effort to restrict the use of neonicotinoids. Bayer and Syngenta, the largest manufacturers of neonics, and Monsanto, one of the leading producers of seeds pretreated with neonics, cultivated ties with prominent academics ... and other scientists who had once called for a greater focus on the threat posed by pesticides. A study published in peer-reviewed journal PLOS One found that the American landscape has become 48 times more toxic to insects since the 1990s, a shift largely fueled by the rising application of neonics. "Generally, we see the U.S. waiting longer than the EU to take action on a variety of pesticides and other chemicals," said [Willa] Childress ... with Pesticide Action Network North America. Part of the divergence, Childress continued, stems from a regulatory system in the U.S. that assumes chemical products are generally safe until proven hazardous. In contrast, the EU tends to use the "precautionary principle," removing products that may cause harm.

The trauma doctor: Gabor Mat on happiness, hope and how to heal our deepest wounds "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

[Gabor] Mat was born in January 1944; in May of that year, the deportation of Hungary's Jews to Auschwitz began. By the end of the Holocaust, 565,000 Hungarian Jews had been murdered, Mat's maternal grandparents among them. When he was 11 months old, his mother sent him with a stranger to be cared for by his aunt. Mat says trauma, from the Greek for "wound", "is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. It is not the blow on the head, but the concussion I get." That, he says, is the good news. "If my trauma was that my mother gave me to a stranger ... that will never not have happened. But if the wound was that I decided as a result that I wasn't worthwhile as a human being, I wasn't lovable, that's a wound that can heal at any time." There can be two types of wound, he says. "There's the capital-T traumatic events," which include things like being abused as a child and the loss of a parent. Then there are "small-T traumas". "You can wound a kid not only by doing bad things to them, but by also not meeting their needs," he says. Mat has a heightened level of compassion. For him, the real villain is our culture. Many of the plights of modern society are, he says, natural responses to an unhealthy culture. Take addiction. His view is that there is no such thing as an "addictive personality". Nor is addiction a disease. His mantra is: "Don't ask why the addiction, ask why the pain. Addiction is a normal response to trauma."

Note: The Wisdom of Trauma is a powerful film that travels alongside Dr. Gabor Mat in his quest to discover the connection between illness, addiction, trauma, and society. Deeply touching and captivating in its diverse portrayal of real human stories, the film also provides a new vision of a trauma-informed society that seeks to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul. What Everyone Should Know About the Brain's Ability to Heal "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Our brains are made up of billions of cells that work together to create our every ability. Wipe out those cells, through a stroke or other brain trauma, and you may no longer be able to read, but you might still be able to speak, sing or write. It's all about where the brain is damaged which systems of cells are traumatized and which are not. The three-pound mass of neurological tissue that we call the brain has the power not only to create every ability we have but also to manifest our perception of reality. Our brains have a two-pronged defense mechanism that kicks in when brain trauma occurs. Not only are we able to grow some new neurons a process called neurogenesis especially in the sites where physical trauma has occurred, our brain cells are capable of neuroplasticity, which means they can rearrange which other neurons they are in communication with. That's why, whenever I meet someone who has experienced a brain trauma of any sort, I don't focus on what abilities that person has lost, but rather I marvel at what insights that person might have gained because of the experience. Few things have greater impact on how people choose to live their lives than neurological trauma or near-death experiences. And when we find ourselves to be neurologically impaired, we become vulnerable and need others to support us rather than criticize or judge us. I became a much more compassionate and empathetic person following my stroke and recovery. Perhaps I am not the only one.

Mindfulness better than CBT for treating depression, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Practising mindfulness is much better than taking part in talking therapies at helping people recover from depression, a British study has found. People who used a mindfulness self-help book for eight weeks and had six sessions with a counsellor experienced a 17.5% greater improvement in recovery from depressive symptoms than those who underwent cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) while being supported by a mental health practitioner. Their results have been published in JAMA Psychiatry. The NHS says mindfulness involves people paying attention to "what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment" and "the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the present moment" as well as being aware of their thoughts and feelings as they happen. People using mindfulness in the LIGHTMind 2 trial spent eight weeks following the advice in The Mindful Way Workbook, which helps them build up their mindfulness skills by guiding them on what they should do every day in order to be aware of their thoughts, feelings and physical sensations in a non-judgmental way. Doing that helps people address some of the behaviours that can maintain feelings of depression. They also had six one-to-one half-hour "support sessions" on the telephone with a therapist discussing their progress, experience of practising mindfulness and asking questions. Mindfulness-based treatment is also a cheaper way of tackling depression because people using it needed on average 526 less of subsequent treatment.

Pentagon Tries to Cast Bank Runs as National Security Threat "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In recent months, the Pentagon has moved to provide loans, guarantees, and other financial instruments to technology companies it considers crucial to national security a step beyond the grants and contracts it normally employs. So when Silicon Valley Bank threatened to fail in March following a bank run, the defense agency advocated for government intervention to insure the investments. The Pentagon had even scrambled to prepare multiple plans to get cash to affected companies if necessary, reporting by Defense One revealed. Their interest in Silicon Valley Bank stems from the Pentagon's brand-new office, the Office of Strategic Capital. The secretary of defense established the OSC in December specifically to counteract the investment power of adversaries like China in U.S. technologies, and to secure separate funding for companies whose products are considered vital to national security. The national security argument for bailout, notably, found an influential friend in the Senate. As the Biden administration intervened to protect Silicon Valley Bank depositors on March 12, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who chairs the powerful Senate Intelligence Committee and also sits on the Banking Committee, issued a press release warning that the bank run posed a national security risk. Warner the only member of Congress to have publicly tied SVB to national security has received significant contributions from the financial sector. Since 2012, Warner has received over $21,000 from Silicon Valley Bank's super PAC.

"The High and Mighty Become The Low and Downtrodden. The Beautiful People Become Ugly. Living Leaves a Mark." "IndyWatch Feed World"

 Dog Poet Transmitting.......

As I wandered This Wasteland Earth recently, I found an article that I later ran across again because it got legs. This man had it all for some years. He was a top-tier celebrity with all the perks. People worshiped him because... in Times of Material Darkness... that is what people do. Then The Virus that Wasn't showed up... pretended to show up. It was never there, to begin with. They simply gave the old flu a new name.

COVID was the means by which to introduce The Killer Vaccine of The Usual Suspects. It seems they owned and ran every one of the manufacturers of demons' blood. I call it that because it is a medium by which possession is effected; if it doesn't kill you first. Oh... let's not be coy. It does both. One thing it certainly does is ruin your quality of life.

I mentioned 'clean-freak sociopaths' recently. Howard Stern comes to mind. He also dropped out of sight (at a certain level) for some time following The Scamdemic. I am not suggesting that Nickelson fits that persona. He always struck me more as a Good Time Charlie. Tom Cruise fits the bill more, and he had that germaphobe thing. Stern wouldn't leave his house. Tom's weirdness is more complex.

They all fear Death.

It amuses me no end that these people think they can bypass The Angel of Death by being clean-freaks and playing avoidance games; Doctor Faust, I presume?

Here are these big-time players going in fear of fake hazards. I never wore a mask except for the handful of times when I had no choice and they were separated by months at a time. I will be a fan of Safeway from now on because they NEVER enforced a mask mandate; at least the one where I live didn't, but... that could have been my invisible friends.

Yes... I have invisible friends who are many... many... many... many... many... times more powerful than ALL the visible friends anyone can have at any time on this Earth. Am I spechul? Well... I am unique, but... so are you. We are all unique.

How did you get the friends you have? Part of it was the magic of the law of attraction that works in the lives of all of us, and... you cultivated them too, didn't you? The love...

High tone and polite discussion will serve as the prelude to the leaders tomorrow. Can they get it together? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

By its very nature with its illustrious cast , it would have been  too much to expect the great conference at Queens Agreement 25  to have conducted  a searching inquest into the strength and weaknesses of the Good Friday Agreement, or an inquiry into  the Windsor Framework as the device for returning the DUP to the Assembly. It became quickly clear that the dynamics were wrong.  Anyway it would have been one thing to talk about balancing arms decommissioning against a guaranteed seat in government, or parity of esteem with the principle of consent for constitutional  change ; quite another to argue over the degree of paper work needed  for different  goods to pass  through the green channel. I mean, how do you even discuss it in open forum without driving everybody nuts?

The sessions were conducted in an untypical atmosphere of hope, mutual respect and unstinting praise for what had been achieved over 25 years.  If sheer inspiration and commitment could achieve nirvana then George Mitchells speech set the gold standard, as Mick has reported. But over the first two days nobody was vulgar enough to enquire why it took seven years for the IRA to disarm or to confront the DUP with the question of what precise changes to the Framework   would persuade then to return to the Assembly. Perhaps over familiarity breeds neglect or at least excessive politeness.

Rather than review the overall course of proceedings Id like to pick out some of the sharper and more salient points made during the course on Monday and Tuesday, restricted to the conference itself.

Following George Mitchells exhortations  I was surprised  to hear the mild mannered former secretary of state  Paul Murphy  Mo Mowlams  number 2 at the time get stuck right into Reform, encouraged by the vigorous chairing of the former President ( and pro- VC at Queens)  Mary McAleese .

If we cannot resolve the Brexit implications then everything we achieved in the GFA will be put at risk declared  wee Paul.

Mary, long unshackled from the constraints of the presidency asked archly; Can we be assured that momentum  will be maintained?

Paul: It has to be resolved in Belfast. A  St Andrews 2 should be called if the parties cannot resolve it in the next couple of months.. If you work at it intensely over 4 days you can crack it.

On handling the identity issues McAleese questioned whether the agreement had the capacity to solve those of them designed to protect unionists. She didnt develop this intriguing theme.

As an equal partner to the Agreement  and with the label Sinn Fein IRA left well behind Gerry Adams asked why it all taken so long  12 years after his first secret contacts with Fr Alec Reid .  Well, he should know but didnt tell.  There is now a peaceful way to end English rule (sic) in Ireland... Chipotle Goes Electric With Rooftop Solar, Wind Energy and EV Chargers "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

What could be better than sitting outside, enjoying a burrito made with fresh ingredients on a spring day? A burrito served in biodegradable packaging, made by a restaurant powered exclusively by renewables that provides electric vehicle (EV) chargers to its customers at least thats what Chipotle Mexican Grills new Responsible Restaurants model is counting on.

As part of its goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2040, the fast-casual restaurant chain is trying out an all-electric restaurant powered by 100 percent solar and wind energy.

The new restaurant design pilot will help Chipotle progress toward its science-based targets, established in alignment with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline, a press release from Chipotle said.

Chipotle offers Mexican food made without artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, with ingredients that are ethically sourced, reported Electrek.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, last year the company donated more than 282,000 pounds of leftover food to community groups as part of its Harvest Program. Chipotle also reduced its direct greenhouse gas emissions by 13 percent in 2022 even though it opened 200 new stores and 40 percent of its electricity came from renewables.

The Raspberry Pi HQ camera module may not quite reach the giddy heights of a DSLR, but it has given experimenters access to a camera system which can equal the output of some surprisingly high-quality manufactured cameras. As an example we have a Yashica film camera.

Coming from the viewpoint of a photographer rather than a hardware person, the video is particularly valuable for his discussion of the many lens options beyond a Chinese CCTV lens which can be used with the platform. It uses only the body from the Yashica, but makes a really cool camera that wed love to own ourselves. If youre interested in the Pi HQ camera give it a watch below the break, and try to follow some of his lens suggestions.

The broken camera he converted is slightly interesting, and raises an important philosophical question for retro technology geeks. Its a Yashica Electro 35, a mid-1960s rangefinder camera for 35 mm film whose claim to fame at the time was its electronically controlled shutter timing depending on its built-in light meter. The philosophical question is this: desecration of a characterful classic camera which might have been repaired, or awesome resto-mod? In that sense its not just about this project, but a question with application across...

An older article but something the world is facing just like in certain sci-fi movies.

The reference publication of the movement in the 80s, the Earth First journal, featured a column called Ask Ned Ludd, in reference to the mythical character that gave name to the luddites. Jones thinks that neo-luddites are in fact misreading the original luddites, but he believes that understanding the difference between the old and modern ones tells us a lot about the ideology of the latter.

Luddites were not anti-technology: they were skilled craftsmen, involved in a labour movement aimed at keeping their machines and their jobs, he says. Thats very different from the neo-luddites ideas of relinquishing civilisation and [of] nature as the supreme good. Jones thinks neo-luddism is fed rather by the idea of technology as a disembodied, transcendent, terrifying force outside the human, which emerged in the mid 20th century, with the bomb and the rise of large-scale computing.

Philippine tribe boosts livelihoods and conservation with civet poop coffee "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

MINDANAO, Philippines For about two decades now, members of the Blaan ethnic group have combed the forest-clad slopes of Mount Matutum from September to January, seeking out the beans pooped out by the cat-sized Philippine palm civet (Paradoxurus philippinensis). While animal feces may be an , members of the tribal community say the more coffee beans they find excreted by the nocturnal mammal, the happier they are. Living at the foot of Mt. Matutum, a protected landscape and the highest peak in the Philippines South Cotabato province, the Blaan natives produce wild civet coffee, a luxury brew that can fetch upward of $80 a cup in markets like the United States. Civets, called balos by the tribespeople, are native to the forests here. With long bodies, short legs, pointed faces and long tails, theyre frequently compared to cats or weasels, but belong to a distinct family, the Viverridae. Known for eating the villagers poultry and plants, they were killed as pests or hunted for meat until the tribal community realized that civets are the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs: an animal that, kept alive, provides ongoing benefits not just for their livelihood but also for their sacred forest. Mount Matutum, a protected landscape, rises behind the village. Image by Bong S. Sarmiento for Mongabay. The local people, mostly from the Buan clan, now guard and protect the civets. Just how many US troops and spies do we have in Ukraine? "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos | Responsible Statecraft | April 18, 2023

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who has flooded the docket in recent months with resolutions designed to get U.S. troops out of overseas missions he believes have not been approved by Congress, is now demanding that Biden tell the American people just how many American military personnel are operating in Ukraine today.

His new Privileged Resolution of Inquiry, which forcing Biden to notify the House of  the exact number of U.S. military inside Ukraine and to hand over copies of any and all documents outlining plans for military assistance to Ukraine, comes a week after leaked Pentagon documents showing previously unreported U.S. Special Forces inside the war zone.

According to the document there were 97 special forces from NATO countries operating in Ukraine as of March, including 14 U.S. special forces. When asked by the Guardian newspaper for confirmation/clarification, the Department of Defense said,  We are not going to discuss or confirm classified information due to the potential impact on national security as well as the safety and security of our personnel and those of our allies and our partners. The Pentagon has not denied the authenticity of the documents, however.

While 14 special forces sounds like a drop in the bucket, these revelations are a drip-drip of other pieces of information over the last year that, when added up, leave more questions than answers, and the bottom line is that the American people have a right to know, says (Ret.) Lt. Col. Daniel Davis.

It is entirely appropriate that the American people know, authoritatively, whether any U.S. troops are engaged in military operations within Ukraine and to demand a change if we dont like the answer, Davis told me yesterday when I asked him about the Gaetz resolution.

American history is rife with too many examples...

Stopping Storms From Creating Dangerous Urban Geysers "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Stopping Storms from Creating Dangerous Urban Geysers:

During intense rainstorms, residents of urban areas rely on stormwater sewers to keep streets and homes from flooding. But in some cases, air pockets in sewers combine with fast-moving water to produce waterspouts that can reach dozens of feet high and last for several minutes. These so-called storm geysers can flood the surrounding area, cause damage to nearby structures, injure bystanders, and compromise drainage pipes.

In Physics of Fluids, by AIP Publishing, researchers from Sichuan University, Ningbo University, University of Alberta, and Hohai University developed a computational model of stormwater piping to study storm geysers. They used this model to understand why storm geysers form, what conditions tend to make them worse, and what city planners can do to prevent them from occurring.

Perhaps the biggest cause of storm geysers is poor city planning. With extreme weather events becoming more common due to climate change, cities can often find themselves unprepared for massive amounts of rain. Growing cities are especially vulnerable. Small cities have small drainage pipes, but new streets and neighborhoods result in added runoff, and those small pipes may not be able to handle the increased volume.

[...] The authors say the best cure for a storm geyser is bigger pipes.

"The most effective preventive measure for newly planned drainage pipelines is to increase the pipeline diameter and improve system design, which reduces the likelihood of full-flow conditions and eliminates storm geysers," said Zhang.

Nintendo Files Lawsuit

With the goal of forcing 1fichier to comply with its takedown notices and pay compensation for damages incurred due to its poor response, Nintendo sued 1fichiers owner, Dstorage SAS.

The Judicial Court of Paris sided with Nintendo in a decision handed down on May 25, 2021. The Court found that Dstorage could be held liable for failing to remove illegal copies of Nintendo games hosted on 1fichier, based on notifications sent by rightsholders.

The court also addressed 1fichiers assertion that content does not have to be removed without authorization from a court. The platform was informed that direct takedown notices from rightsholders do not require a court order to be valid. 1fichier was also instructed to publish the following notice:

By decision dated May 25, 2021, the Paris court ruled that the company DSTORAGE, which operates the website 1fichier.com, has engaged its liability as as a content host by not removing illegal content despite the notifications made by Nintendo Co., Ltd., The Pokmon Company, Creatures Inc. and DE Inc. and ordered it to pay NINTENDO Co Ltd, the sums of 885,500 euros and 50,000 euros in compensation for its damages.

Court of Appeal Sides With Nintendo

A press release published by Nintendo on April 17 reveals that on April 12, 2023, the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed that Dstorage SAS engaged its civil liability for failing to withdraw or block access to illicit copies of Nintendo games hosted on its platform, d...

Lula supports de-dollarization on his trip to China, but that is not enough "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Lucas Leiroz | April 18, 2023

Lulas trip to China was marked by several signals about what may be his foreign policy in his third term. In his speeches, Lula suggested that he will continue to bet on partnerships with the global south and emphasized his criticism of organizations linked to or controlled by the US. Lulas trip was well received by Chinese partners and brought new hope to bilateral and intra-BRICS relations.

Undoubtedly, the most prominent point in his pronouncements was his support for the de-dollarization of international economic relations. Lula questioned the need to use the dollar as a global commercial currency and expressed his support for the idea of creating a currency for the BRICS or starting to trade in national currencies.

Why cant we do trade based on our own currencies? () Who was it that decided that the dollar was the currency after the disappearance of the gold standard? () Why cant a bank like that of the BRICS have a currency to finance trade relations between Brazil and China, between Brazil and other countries? Its difficult because we are unaccustomed [to the idea]. Everyone depends on just one currency, he said during a press conference.

With this, Lula reiterated what he had mentioned previously, during a trip to Argentina, in which he proposed the creation of a currency for Mercosur and another for the BRICS, both with the aim of advancing economic de-dollarization. To his supporters, this sounds like a big sign that Lula is distancing himself from the US and turning towards greater participation in building a multipolar world. However, this seems like an overly optimistic analysis.

De-dollarization is part of the multipolar world, but it is not its essence. Many countries, even US allies, have been seeking to de-dollarize their international transactions in recent years. Japan, for example, has traded with Beijing without the dollar since 2011, as well as Australia since 2013. Also, the EU has traded with Iran without the dollar since 2020. France recently started its de-dollarization process and Switzerland will certainly start this process soon, as it began to get rid of some of its dollar reserves.

In fact, economic de-dollarization is a technical and pragmatic measure, whose purpose is much more to generate economic benefits than to operate any geopolitical transition. In Brazil, the measure has even been supported on a large scale by businessmen and parliamentarians linked to the agribusiness sector, which is the main segment of the Brazilian economy and whose biggest partner is precisely China. Recognizing the Chinese interest in de-dollarization, there is internal pressure from the Brazilian business community for Lula to de-dollarize the economy. Therefore, it is a technical and pragmatic issue that does...

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Tuesday in the most significant move towards ending Syria's regional isolation, according to state media.

Bin Farhan's visit, the first by a senior Saudi diplomat to Damascus since ties were severed following Assad's crackdown on pro-democracy protests, comes a week after Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad visited Saudi Arabia.

Assad and bin Farhan discussed bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual interest.

The Saudi foreign ministry said in an online statement that the visit showed the kingdom's desire to find a political solution to Syria's conflict that would preserve the country's "Arab identity, and return it to its Arab surroundings".

Last month, Saudi Arabia and Syria agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations after a decade-long rift.

US Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Force Biden to Provide Data on Ukraine Aid, Conflict "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sputnik 17.04.2023

WASHINGTON US Congressman Matt Gaetz said in a statement that he has introduced a resolution to force the Biden administration to relay information about plans for US military assistance to Ukraine, as well as about the number of US servicemembers operating in the country.

Today, US Congressman Matt Gaetz introduced a Privileged Resolution of Inquiry, forcing President Joe Biden to transmit to the House of Representatives copies of any and all documents outlining plans for military assistance to Ukraine. Additionally, the resolution directs Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to disclose the number of United States Armed Forces, including special operators, deployed to Ukraine without Congressional authority, the statement said on Monday.

Biden and Austin would be required to provide the requested information within two weeks of the bills adoption, the statement said.

Documents leaked in recent months that appear to show classified US military information revealed that at least 14 members of the US special forces were deployed in Ukraine.

There is a small US military element in Ukraine, but no servicemembers engaged in combat operations, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said on Monday. However, US officials have declined to comment on the veracity of the seemingly leaked materials.

The Biden Administration and other allied countries have been misleading the world on the state of the war in Ukraine. There must be total transparency from this administration to the American people when they are gambling war with a nuclear adversary by having special forces operating in Ukraine, Gaetzs statement said.

The resolution would better inform Congress and the country on the true state of the US militarys involvement in the Ukraine conflict, the statement added.

Garrett: PSA: upgrade your LUKS key derivation function "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Matthew Garrett points out that many Linux systems using encrypted disks were installed with a relatively weak key derivation function that could make it relatively easy for a well-resourced attacker to break the encryption:

So, in these days of attackers with access to a pile of GPUs, a purely computationally expensive KDF is just not a good choice. And, unfortunately, the subject of this story was almost certainly using one of those. Ubuntu 18.04 used the LUKS1 header format, and the only KDF supported in this format is PBKDF2. This is not a memory expensive KDF, and so is vulnerable to GPU-based attacks. But even so, systems using the LUKS2 header format used to default to argon2i, again not a memory expensive KDF. New versions default to argon2id, which is. You want to be using argon2id.

The article includes instructions on how to (carefully) switch an installed system to a more secure setup.

Linux Fu: Reading Your Memorys Memory "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Linux users have a lot of software to be proud of. However, there is the occasional Windows program that does something youd really like to do and it just wont run. This is especially true of low-level system programs. If you want to poke around your CPU and memory, for example, there are tons of programs for that under Windows. There are a few for Linux, but they arent always as complete or handy. Recently, I had half the memory in my main desktop fail and I wanted to poke around in the system. In particular, I wanted to read the information encoded in the memory chips configuration EEPROM. Should be easy, right? Youd think.

Not Really Easy

One nice tool a lot of Windows users have is CPU-Z. Of course, it doesnt run on Linux, but there is a really nice imitator called CPU-X. You can probably install it from your repositories. However, the GitHub page is a nice stop if for no other reason than to enjoy the user name [TheTumultuousUnicornOfDarkness]. The program has a gtk or an ncurses interface. You dont need to run it as root, but if you press the start daemon button and authenticate, you can see some extra information, including a tab for memory.

According to United Nations reports, Latin America, home to eight percent of the global population, accounts for 37 percent of the worlds homicides. (These statistics do not include deaths in wars, accidents and suicides.)

Observers talk about a generalized security crisis, and the Salvadoran president boasted of a 56.8 percent decline in the homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022, while Ecuador, at the other end of the spectrum, showed an increase of 82 percent.

But comparisons in percentages from one year to the next are misleading if the absolute numbers are not taken into account. For example, the homicide rate in Chile increased 32.2 percent in 2022, although in actual numbers that meant 4.6 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. In El Salvador, the figure for the same year was 7.8 per 1...

This government runs on dirty money. Thats why its torching the planet.

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 29th March 2023

Money for the criminals, prison for the heroes: this, in brief, is the governments climate policy. If something is damaging to the public interest, its likely to be rewarded and subsidised. If its beneficial, it will find itself in a hostile environment.

This government represents the denouement of the Pollution Paradox: as dirty money has the greatest incentive to invest in politics, it comes to run the whole system. Across these 13 years of misrule, we have seen the perversities of Conservative government multiply and intensify.

Thursday was supposed to be green day, when the government, forced to act by a court ruling, would unveil a new, more detailed plan for achieving net zero emissions. Instead, the occasion has been rebranded energy security day.

Rather than announce the comprehensive change required to defend Earth systems, Rishi Sunaks government will defend the fossil fuel industry from its competitors. It is likely to set no meaningful new green targets: instead, it will pump money into false solutions, such as carbon capture and storage, which has not materialised at scale for 20 years and never will. This fabled technologys purpose is to justify fossil fuel extraction, on the grounds that one day the carbon emissions could be buried. Sunak will also promote sustainable aviation fuel, though there is, and can be, no such thing.

Worse still, he is likely to announce the licensing of a huge new oilfield: Rosebank. Its development, by the Norwegian state company Equinor, will be almost entirely subsidised by the UKs tax relief for new oil and gas development. While Sunak will doubtless justify this generosity by claiming that it helps secure our future energy supplies, 80% of the oil the field produces is likely to be exported.

This tax relief is a massive but little-known scandal. The government hands back 91p out of every pound it harvests from the energy profits levy, to fund oil and gas investments. It thus creates a major incentive for fossil fuel companies to open new wells. Yet the science is clear: if we ar...

Why are Western media suddenly praising Russian electronic warfare capabilities? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | April 18, 2023

Electronic warfare (EW) is one of the most important aspects of modern military capabilities and is often the litmus test of how advanced the state and its armed forces are. Its part of the invisible and yet extremely intense battle that we usually cannot see directly. However, its impact is wholly undeniable. Russia is among the world leaders in EW and its warfighting capabilities in this regard are a source of pride for the Eurasian giant, but also fear for its adversaries. Russian dominance in EW on the frontlines of Ukraine is so comprehensive and massive that its one of the few things the mainstream propaganda machine never dared to question or ridicule. Even Russian strategic thermonuclear capabilities were subjected to propaganda attacks at times, but its EW capabilities never. And for good reason.

And yet, as with everything concerning the mainstream propaganda machine, we must tread carefully. This is especially true when it comes to the media citing the Pentagon leaks as their primary source of information. Needless to say, an actual leak would require an inadvertent release of classified information and most intelligence experts agree its extremely unlikely there was anything inadvertent about it. However, this is not to say that all information connected to the leak is false. On the contrary, its relatively elaborate nature implies that much of it is indeed true, but it can be difficult to discern what exactly. One of the few leaked facts we can surely believe concerns precisely Russian EW capabilities. Still, this begs the question why?

To answer that, we should first dissect and specify the claims of the mainstream propaganda machine. The leaks include a massive amount of information, including the claim that US-made JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bombs are failing in Ukraine due to successful Russian EW measures. The leak documents not only review the use of Russian countermeasures to make JDAMs ineffective, but also indicate that in some cases this results in failure to even detonate. It seems this includes the JDAM-ER (Extended Range) bombs that the troubled Biden administration sent to the Kiev regime in order to provide certain battlefield advantages to its forces. A futile effort, it would seem now, although the documents suggest that at least a thousand JDAM kits have been sent so far.

Politico claims th...

Pentagon Leaks: 5 ways to tell REAL from FAKE "IndyWatch Feed War"

Kit Knightly Off-Guardian April 17, 2023

We promised a longer take on the Pentagon leaks, and here it goes. Regular readers will probably be familiar with my view on leaked documents in general, but if youre not allow me to quote my own 2019 article on the (absurd) Afghanistan papers:

An awful lot of modern leaks are no such thing. They are Orwellian exercises in controlling the conversation [] carefully making sure the establishment and the alternative are joined in the middle, controlled from the same source.

Thats not to say ALL leaks are automatically and ubiquitously narrative control exercises, clearly some are realbut its usually pretty easy to tell them apart. In fact heres a little checklist.

1. If your leak tells you stuff you already know, its probably a fake leak.

Leaking widely known, publicly available information is a very common tactic. In the Pentagon leaks, for example, it was revealed that the US has been spying on South Korea, Israel and Ukraine. But the US spies on everyone allies included and we have all known that for literal decades.

Further, everyone spies on everyone, its just the way the game is played. Acting like its a big reveal, and the performative outrage of the South Korean government, is a hallmark of a fake leak.

2. If your leak reinforces the mainstream narrative, its probably a fake leak.

Leaks can be used to manage and/or reinforce the mainstream narrative. The Afghanistan Papers are, again, a prime example of this. The secret history which did nothing but repeat myths and lies about the US war.

Or the leaked Fauci emails, which resurrected the lab-leak theory of Covids origins, but reinforced that Covid existed and was dangerous.

3. If your leak gets MASSES of media coverage, its probably a fake leak.

A telltale sign of the fake leak is the mainstream media carefully explaining to everyone how important it is and what it all means. The BBC, Sky News, CNN and others have all put out explainer articles and videos detailing the content of the leaks. US spokespeople,...

In one sense, the French President was consistent, riding the hobbyhorse of Europes strategic autonomy, one hived off from the US imperium and free of Chinese influence.

Europes third-way autonomy would be a mighty thing for the Elyse Palace, especially given French pretensions in steering it. After all, Frau Mutti Merkel is no longer de facto European chief, presiding over the bloc with matronly care. Her successor, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is finding himself caught in undergrowth, a difficult thing at times for the continents largest economy, and the globes fourth.

What, then, of the fuss? In the first place, Macron had company on his Beijing visit: on his first day of the trip, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had decided to come along. This was never going to go well, given their respective views over the Middle Kingdom. Von der Leyen, for one, uses a larded management approach to Beijing, ringing the relationship with restrictions and signals of constipation. On Taiwans status, she sticks to the warring line embraced by policy makers stretching from Canberra to Washington. Macron, at least in one sense, understands the power of China to be not only inextinguishable but a logical weight against the US.

The fuss then began in earnest with Macrons remarks, made on his plane, the Cotam Unit, after the three-day visit. To reporters from Politico and Les Echos, he began conventionally, reiterating the view that Europe should be a third power, a counterweight to Washington and Beijing. But it was his remarks on Taiwan that caused some bristling across a number of quarters. Do we [Europeans], he posed to Les Echos, have an interest in speeding up on the subject of Taiwan? No. The worst of things would be to think that we Europeans must be followers on this subject and adapt ourselves to an American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.

The mania over Taiwans fate constituted a potential trap for Europe, landing it in crises that are not ours. The heating up of the US-Sino conflict would frustrate European ambitions, be it in terms of time or finance, to develop our own strategic autonomy and we will become vassals, whereas we could become the third pole [in the world order] if we have a few years to develop this.

Those familiar with the Macron recipe have seen it before. An interview of frankness acts as kindling. The fire rages. Then come the explainers, clarifications, points of qualification. The fire abates. In 2019, he warned of N...

Quadrupeds Are Learning to Dribble, Catch, and Balance "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Now that anyone, anywhere can get themselves a quadrupedal robot without having to apply for a major research grant, were seeing all kinds of fun research being done with our four-legged electromechanical friends. And by fun research I mean very serious research that is making valuable contributions towards practical robotics. But seriously, there are lots of important robotics problems that can be solved in fun and interesting ways; dont let anyone tell you different, especially not the current United States ambassador to Turkey.

At the 2023 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) slated to take place in London next month, three papers will be presented that report on the talents of quadrupedal robots and the researchers who teach them new things, including dribbling, catching, and traversing a balance beam.

MITs Dribbling Quadruped

Quadrupedal soccer robots have a long and noble history; for years, Sony Aibos were the standard platform at RoboCup. But quadrupeds have made some enormous four-legged strides since the late 1 990s and early 2000s. Now that basic quadrupedal mobility has been pretty well figured out, its time to get these robots doing fun stuff. In an upcoming ICRA paper, roboticists from MIT describe how they have taught a quadruped to dribble a soccer ball across rough terrain, which is actually really impressive for anyone who has tried to do this themselves.

Lets just get this out of the way: for most of the world, were talking about football here. But the paper calls it soccer, so Im going to call it soccer too. Whatever you call it, its the one with the round ball where most of the time a game is actually being played instead of the one with the pointy ball where most of the time people are just standing around not doing anything.

DribbleBot, a name given to an automaton whose functionality the paper describes as Dexterous Ball Manipulation with a

Forests, Fires, and Biomass "IndyWatch Feed War"

A huge climate/environmental justice issue is looming over Sonoma County and the rest of California. A hungry monster is currently chomping up our trees and forests and burning them for power generation, converting them into fuel pellets for shipping overseas to European and Asian markets for burning, or turning them into biofuels for aviation. Exported fuel pellets are also burned for energy generation. Biomass energy (bioenergy) is being called renewable energy. It is taking away critical funds for real renewables like solar and wind energy.

Biofuels and biomass energy are not clean, not carbon neutral, and not sustainable. In fact, they are highly polluting, emitting tons of carbon dioxide, carcinogens and toxins which are damaging to human health and the environment and impact low income communities the most. Biomass energy facilities process and burn mature trees and wood; carbon that is being sequestered and stored in forests that take decades to centuries to grow. This form of energy is not renewable because trees that have taken decades to grow are being cut down and replaced by seedlings. Soil is destroyed and carbon stored in the soil is lost during the logging process. The top climate and fire scientists are saying that harvesting mature trees to supposedly save them from fire increases carbon emissions rather than preventing them. In many locations, seedlings do not survive when they are replanted in severely damaged soils. Biomass energy is not carbon neutral because the largest, mature trees sequester and store the most carbon. Cutting them down releases carbon into the atmosphere and prevents future carbon storage and sequestration. Billions of dollars of federal, state and county money, including our tax dollars, are going into the clearing of forests and to heavily subsidizing the creation of the biomass industry. It is an expensive source of non-renewable energy, and our climate is directly impacted. There are plans to capture the carbon dioxide and pump it underground, but that is a false climate solution.

DRAX is a huge company in the UK. The wood has mostly been coming from the U.S. It is rapidly becoming a more local issue too. Greenpeace has released a short video on Youtube about this environmental racism.

Fuel pellet plants are also being planned in Lassen and Tuolomne Counties which rely on exporting wood from California forests to be burned for energy in Asia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the United Kingdom would like to work with Turkey to build submarines.

"Today, Turkey's shipyards are those that have captured a certain place in the world maritime race," Erdogan said, addressing a group of youth in Istanbul.

"Those who come from America or Pakistan to build frigates for us, and those who say, Can we build such an aircraft carrier in Turkey, can we build a submarine? At the moment, the UK wants to cooperate with us on the construction of submarines."

In addition to having close defence relations due to their Nato partnership, Turkey and the UK also enjoy an industrial cooperation. UK engine maker Rolls-Royce and its local partner Kale are expected to supply an engine for Ankara's first home-built fighter jet, the TF-X.

The UK-based BAE Systems is also collaborating closely with Turkish Aerospace Industries in the development of the jet, including its stealth technology.

Summary: The above LibrePlanet talk by Denis Carikli is a remote (not physical presence) talk; it talks about bringing freedom to the hardware level (or closer to it) and it was uploaded by the FSF a few hours ago (slides here); From the official page: But there is also software running before the operating system is even started (like BIOS, UEFI, the Management Engine or the PSP operating systems). They give the hardware manufacturers an enormous amount of control over the computers used by users, even if users use FSF-approved GNU/Linux distributions like Trisquel and Parabola. That control is for instance often used by hardware manufacturers to give companies the ability to remotely control users computers through features like AMT, and that control is independent of the operating system running on the computer. After giving some background for less technical users, we will look from a user point of view why and how to avoid nonfree software in that area.

Oscar Rickett Tue, 04/18/2023 - 13:26
Smoke rises over the city as army and paramilitaries clash in power struggle, in Khartoum (Reuters)

For months, the Sudanese people and those watching events in Sudan have feared this. And now, here it is: the worst has happened.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo are fighting on the streets of the countrys cities.

Having maintained a marriage of convenience since the military coup of October 2021, the military entities - which have different sources of power, income and regional support - have turned on each other. Sudans anti-democratic forces are at war and the people are once again caught in the crossfire, fearing for their lives as they seek shelter from the SAFs jet fighters and the RSFs artillery shells and anti-aircraft guns.

Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, is a city of ghosts. Its already fragile infrastructure is no more. Gangs roam the streets unchecked. Daglo, better known as Hemeti, says he will hunt Burhan down "like a dog". Burhan says that "every war ends in negotiation, even if the opponent is defeated".

Where did this all start?

Curiosity Mars Rover Gets its Latest Interplanetary Software Patch "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Shooting all-important bytes to a machine 254 million kms away from Earth:

Launched from Cape Canaveral on November 26, 2011, the Curiosity rover was designed for scientific investigations during a two-year mission. Twelve years later, the car-sized machine is still roaming Mars' surface while NASA improves the software side of things from afar.

Between April 3 and 7, Curiosity's science and imaging operations were put "on hold" for planned software maintenance. NASA installed the latest "patch" to its Mars rover's flight software, a major update which was planned for years and designed to further extend the rover's capabilities and longevity in the Red Planet's harsh environment.

NASA started to work on the now-up and running software update back in 2016, when Curiosity got its last software overhaul. The new flight software (R13) brings about 180 changes to the rover's system, two of which will make the Mars robot drive faster and reduce wear and tear on its wheels.

The first major change implemented by NASA in Curiosity software is related to how the machine processes images of its surroundings to plan a route around obstacles. Newer rovers like Perseverance are equipped with onboard computers capable of processing images on-the-fly, while the robots are still in motion. Curiosity, on the other hand, doesn't have that kind of feature and it needs to stop every time to reassess surface conditions and correct its course.

Bill Gates Plows Millions into Group Claiming Kids Are Sexual Beings "IndyWatch Feed War"

Frank Bergman SLAY NEWS April 17, 2023

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has invested tens of millions of dollars into a radical nongovernmental organization (NGO) that is pushing for young children to be considered sexual beings.

Not to be confused with the pro-abortion organization, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is a group that campaigns for kids to be sexualized from an early age.

IPPF claims that children are born sexual and lobbies for children under 10 years of age to be taught about commercial sex work.

The NGO wields significant influence on global sex education and comprises 120 independent organizations in over 146 countries.

The organization, including its European network, has received over $80 million from Gates.

Other significant donors included the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2017, the NGO released a toolkit showing an insight into how it teaches sex education to children around the world.

The shocking toolkit was first flagged by Nicole Solas of the Independent Womens Forum.

Sexual activity may be part of different types of relationships, including dating, marriage, or commercial sex work, among others, IPPF said about what children under 10 should be taught.

The toolkit said that children under 10 should also be told: As you grow up, you might start to be interested in people with diverse gender identities.

The IPPF suggested in multiple instances that children are born sexual.

Children under 10 should be taught that Sexuality is a part of you from the moment you are born.

Your sexuality develops and changes throughout your life.

[S]ex positivity acknowledges that human beings, including adolescents and young people, are autonomous sexual beings, the NGO adds.

According to the NGO, sex educators should have an Understanding of young people as sexual beings.

[A]ll people are sexual beings with sexual rights, regardless of their age, the NGO said.

The IPPF continues by declaring that Sexual rights include the right to say yes or no to sex; the right to express sexuality, including the right to seek pleasure; the right to enjoy bodily autonomy

Despite the fact that IPPF defined a child as under the age of 18, per the UNs Convention of the Rights of a Child, the toolkit excluded weighing on the approximate age of a childs ability to consent with an adult.

It stated, Member Associations are encouraged to use existing evidence to assess the best age parameters for their local context.

The curriculum said that kids under 10 should be aware of a general rule that No one can touch you if you dont want them to.

During childhood, children should learn about the basic social conventions of privacy, nudity, and respe...

Children may consent to sex with adults. This has been the plan all along, social media influencer charges

A shocking report issued by international legal experts with the backing of the United Nations appears to open the floodgates to normalize sex with minors.

Sexual conduct involving persons below the domestically prescribed minimum age of consent to sex may be consensual in fact, if not in law, the Geneva-based International Commission of Jurists wrote in March with an assist from UNAIDS and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The report is titled The 8 March Principles for a Human Rights-Based Approach to Criminal Law Proscribing Conduct Associated with Sex, Reproduction, Drug Use, HIV, Homelessness and Poverty.

It is published front-and-center on the groups website.

It does not actively call for decriminalizing sex between adults and minors. But it states that children have both the capacity and the legal right to make sexual decisions.

According to the United Nations, children may consent to sex with adults. This has been the plan all along, social media influencer Ian Miles Cheong tweeted over the weekend to his 538,000 followers.

The report does not offer a suggested age of sexual consent.

It was released on March 8 in recognition of International Womens Day, the commission states online, suggesting there is a connection between womens rights and age of sexual consent.

The once-unthinkable recommendations from an international cabal of global elite legal minds appears to suggest that pedophilia could be normalized.

It touched off a horrified reaction on social media around the world.

Nine Traits of Masculine Men "IndyWatch Feed War"

Bobbi Wingham sent this useful reminder of what masculinity looks like.

Buttwiper should put his image on their can.

by Bobbi Wingham (a woman, ex feminist) from May 2, 2012

Women need to encourage men to be who they really are and not who women think they should be.

This means women should back off.  But, for the guys out there who havent got a clue who they are and what real women want and need, here goes:

The Traits of a Masculine Man

Confidence:  Believe in yourself, not only that you can do what you set out to do, but that you already are what you need to be (even if on the outside it doesnt yet show.)

Courage:  A masculine man is courageous (Im not talking about being willing to do stupid stunts, either), willing to do what is necessary without showing weakness (even if he is scared to death.)  A man cannot be truly courageous and brave if he does not fear something.

With The Advent of The Avatar, they are being pushed downward into manifestation, where they are to be dealt with.

Let me point out something that goes to the heart of transsexual violence against normal people. Few of these characters actually traverse the sexual border from male to altered female, which is why the drag queen phenom is being pushed so hard.

They remain genitally intact while growing breasts and taking female hormones. What happens is that a war develops in the body of such a person, where the hormones attack the natural state and which sends the individual into a flaming rage over the state of their body. Troubled Waters: The Geopolitics of Deep-Sea Mining "IndyWatch Feed War"

Following its decision to accept applications for deep-sea mining this July, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), a UN affiliate organization, has renewed interest in an emerging realm of geopolitical competition. Despite concerns over the lack of scientific research and the potential environmental impact, the momentum for deep-sea mining stems from global demand for battery metals to fulfill the intricate supply chain needs for manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and clean energy infrastructure. Lucrative deposits of cobalt, nickel, manganese, and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) have all been linked to deep-sea mining, with China, Russia, and Norway representing some of the most eager of participants in the nascent and controversial industry.

Deep-sea mining is the process of extracting minerals from the ocean floor. Unlike traditional forms of mining, which involve extracting minerals from the earths crust, deep-sea mining involves collecting nodules, crusts, and other deposits that have formed on the ocean floor over millions of years. These deposits are often found in areas known as polymetallic nodules, which cover large swaths of the ocean floor. These nodules are in areas that are thousands of meters deep, requiring significant capex spending and specialized technical equipment to bring the metals to surface for processing.

At present, research on the potential long-term implications of deep-sea mining is limited, prompting calls for a global moratorium on the practice from NGOs like Greenpeace, as well as several governments, including France, Germany, and Chile. The dearth of available scientific research led the ISA to take a gradual approach toward the development of standards and regulations for deep-sea mining. However, given current ISA provisions, the body is required to vet applications for deep-sea mining using whatever regulations currently exist by the time the application is received. The ISA also requires prospective mining contractors to obtain sponsorship by an ISA member, but with only three months remaining to develop regulations, the likelihood of resolving existing concerns from the ISAs pro-mortarium members is low.

Compounding the concerns of the environmental impact are the potential geopolitical implications of deep-sea mining. Given the glacial pace of its regulatory framework, the industry is dominated by a handful of states that possess the capital, equipment, and technical knowledge required for seabed mining. The dominance of a few countries in the deep-sea mining industry could exacerbate existing geopolitical tensions, particularly in areas where there are competing claims over maritime boundaries and resource rights. At present, the industrys most dominant players include Canada,...

Alarming expansion of cropland in protected areas threatens biodiversity goals "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Conserving 30% of the worlds land by 2030 will be challenging if croplands continue to expand in protected areas at current rates, a new study finds.

Protected areas are places that conserve nature and cultural resources. Although they are often largely free of human interference, many areas permit a certain amount of activity, such as growing crops.

The new study, published in Nature Sustainability, finds that cropland has expanded at an alarming rate in protected areas between 2000 and 2019.

The study uses three datasets, covering different time periods, to assess the extent of this expansion. It shows that the annual rate of cropland expansion grew by as much as 58-fold over nearly two decades.

This poses a great potential threat to biodiversity conservation and, without changes in crucial protected areas, the global land conservation target for 2030 will not be reached, the study says.

A researcher who was not involved in the study says that the findings highlight the need for a real conversation about what we expect protection to look like in achieving nature targets this decade.

Global protected areas

There are more than 260,000 protected areas around the world, including national parks, forests and wildlife sanctuaries. Such areas have different protection requirements, ranging from strict nature reserves to larger zones that allow a certain amount of sustainable use of natural resources.

They are an important tool for storing carbon, safeguarding biodiversity and reducing risks from climate hazards, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature

Almost every country in the world agreed to conserve 30% of the worlds land and 30% of the ocean by 2030 as part of a wider nature deal at the COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal last year.

This would be a significant increase. According to a March 2023...

Japan Wades into Foreign Defense Assistance "IndyWatch Feed War"

On April 5, 2023, the Japanese government announced that it has established the Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework to provide assistance for militaries and other related organizations of friendly (developing) countries, an initiative that is partially based on Tokyos experience in providing Official Development Assistance (ODA). The new framework is taken from the National Security Strategy (NSS) paper released on December 16, 2022, which states that OSA will improve defense capabilities as well as enhance the security and deterrence capabilities of like-minded countries in order to prevent unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force, ensure the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region in particular, and create a security environment desirable for Japan. The paper also states that Japan will provide the necessary military-based materials and equipment to strengthen the countrys various security requirements. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno stated that countries to be considered for OSA assistance include Bangladesh, Fiji, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

However, Japan will have a long road in implementing OSA effectively, as both Japan and the OSA recipients will need to abide by the rules of the Three Principles on Defense Equipment Transfers. Japan will also face stiff competition from other countries that have provided similar military aid packages to various Indo-Pacific countries.

Under the Three Principles on Defense Equipment Transfers, military hardware will be provided for areas not related to international conflict. This means that Japan will expect OSA recipients to follow through with the conditions of using them in activities related to ensure peace and stability. This also includes not sending any material to countries that are under arms sanctions under the United Nations (UN) or certain states. Examples of these stability activities include counter-terrorism, anti-piracy, search and rescue (SAR) and peacekeeping operations. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) also said that policies being put into place to ensure OSA packages are implemented properly include transparency on what type of aid Japan will provide and strict guidelines on not transferring any military hardware to third parties and the prevention of extra-purpose use.

Another area of concern is the competition Japan faces with other countries that have provided similar military aid packages in the past. One reason why developing countries may be relu...

Roy requested police files about arrest for paedophilia at my home; weeks later Roy was sent to disciplinary proceedings (along with his wife), just after I had signed an NDA with Roy's boss

Summary: The timing of the bullying at Sirius Open Source was all along difficult to ignore because the police was getting involved after records had been requested (we published them months later*) and Melinda Gates started pursuing a divorce (the man on the right is the right-hand man of Bill Gates, who was also entrusted by Jeffrey Epstein to execute his will); years earlier Microsoft managers phoned my boss (who also supervised my wife; we both worked there at the time), complaining about me by name, so they had clearly taken note of where I was working and sought to silence me one way or another

If you cant make it good, at least make it look good.

Demystifying austerity "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Governments around the world are talking about tightening their belts. Austerity is a common economic policy, but what is it actually? On the podcast, we discuss.

Across the world, renewed social unrestfrom public sector wage strikes in the United Kingdom, to protests against pension reform in Franceare being read as a repudiation of austerity. The inflationary crisis afflicting the global North has had the knock-on effect of precipitating a debt crisis in the global South as the cost of servicing debt increases. Repayments on public debt owed to non-residents for a group of 91 of the worlds poorest countries will take up an average of more than 16 per cent of government revenues in 2023, the Financial Times recently reported. To make repayments possible, governments usually resort to austerity, cutting social spending on healthcare, education, and social security.

This is how we usually understand austerity, as caused by some kind of economic shock. But what if that is not the case? What if rather than being exceptional to modern capitalism, austerity is in fact inherent to its stability? This is what Clara Mattei argues in The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism (University of Chicago Press, 2022). Rather than painful medicine states are forced to administer in times of crisis, austerity is a fundamental tool for stabilizing class relations and increasing market dependence. But if austerity is intrinsic to capitalism, what does this mean for the anti-austerity agenda that has captured the global left? Can we resist austerity without dismantling capitalism? This week on the podcast we explore these questions with Mattei, an assistant professor of economics at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

Study attempts to foresee the future of Amazonian mammals if the rainforest turns into savanna "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

If increasing global warming and deforestation were to transform Amazonia into an irreversibly degraded dry savanna, what could happen to the approximately 300 species of mammals that live there? These include jaguars, tapirs and deer. This is the question that biologists Daniel Rocha and Rahel Sollmann tried to answer in a recently published article in Animal Conservation journal. Their study involved the analysis of images taken by 400 photo traps installed in four natural enclaves of the Cerrado biome located in Amazonia, which were formed thousands of years ago: in the state of Amazonas, Campos Amaznicos National Park and Mapinguari National Park; and in the state of Rondnia, the Guapor Biological Reserve and Corumbiara State Park.Their goal was to understand how medium- and large-sized land mammals behave in these isolated patches of savanna in the middle of the rainforest. In doing so, they were able to project what may happen if, some years from now, the climate and vegetation of the planets largest tropical forest were to change. An Israeli airline El-Al Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft taking off from Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv (AFP)

Israeli airline El Al has condemned the pilot of one of its flights for criticising the country's controversial judicial reforms over the public address system during a flight to New York.

The pilot compared the reforms, which have sparked months of protests in Israel, to the Holocaust and noted the importance of democracy, saying things like the Holocaust can potentially happen in dictatorships, and we are fighting for Israel to remain a democratic country".

The incident occurred on Holocaust Memorial Day, during which Israel commemorates the six million Jews systematically murdered during World War Two.

In a statement, El Al said that it denounced "political statements of any kind, by any of its employees as part of their work, and certainly not on its planes, which cannot be a platform for this type of activity.

The company ordered that such incidents be avoided, especially on such a "sensitive and significant day" for the people of Israel.

The incident has raised tensions between the airline and the Israeli government, with Transport Minister Miri Regev criticising the pilots for behaving as if they are the landlords of the comp...

Nexon Sues Dark and Darker Developer for Copyright Infringement "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

dark darkerThe official stable release of the first person shooter game Dark and Darker is eagerly awaited by hundreds of thousands of fans.

Whether the full game will actually be released is uncertain, however, as the game is at the center of a legal dispute.

Last month, police in South Korea raided the offices of Dark and Darkers developers, local game studio Ironmace. The legal action was triggered by a complaint from game publisher Nexon, which accused its rival of copyright infringement and stealing trade secrets.

Ironmace was founded by former Nexon developers who allegedly took thousands of files with them. The game publisher believes that these files were used to develop Dark and Darker, which is similar to the P3 game project Nexon is working on.

Following the raid, the disgruntled publisher also complained to Steam, which banned Dark and Darker from its platform. And when Ironmace released its latest alpha test via BitTorrent last weekend, its adversary pulled out all the stops to slow down distribution.

Nexon Sues Ironmace in U.S. Court

The recent actions show that Nexon is serious about protecting its rights. This isnt limited to sending takedown notices and legal threats either; the company also filed a lawsuit at a federal court in Seattle, Washington, last Friday.

Mitchell: Dont be too hard on yourselves, but dont give up on the belief you can do better and better "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

At ninety George Mitchell rocked the house yesterday treating his audience to the wisdom, humour and realism no doubt honed over many years in American public life. For today, Ill stick to his opening remarks (and a recurring theme here of renewal)

On the evening the Agreement was reached I commended the men and women who wrote and signed it. But I also said that it would take other leaders in the future to safeguard and extend their work. And so it has. I am here, with many others, to sound that bell one more time.

Life is change: For every human being, for every family, for every government, for every society. All human beings, every single one of us, is fallible, as are all human organisations and institutions. In human affairs the answer to every problem contains within it the seeds of a new problem.

Today, a quarter century after the agreement, the people of Northern Ireland continue to wrestle with their doubts, their differences, their disagreements. This of course is only natural. They will continue to do so, no matter how successful their political leaders are.

The answer is not perfection, or permanence. It is now, as it was then, for the current and future leaders of Northern Ireland to act with courage and vision, as their predecessors did 25 years ago.

To find workable answers to the daily problems of the present. To preserve peace. To leave to the next generation peace, freedom, opportunity, and the hope of a better future for their children.

One of the strengths of democracy is the right of all citizens to publicly disagree with and to criticize their government officials and their policies. But all values, when carried to extremes, can become vices.

So, if theres one bit of unsolicited advice Id give to the people of Northern Ireland, its this, Dont always be so hard on yourselves. At the same time, never ever give up on the belief that we all can do better and be better.

The future becomes the present in a heartbeat.

Perhaps the most poignant moment was when he called for a moment of silence, which he presaged with the following in which he highlights the full extent of the cost of our brutal and unnecessary war (in the frighteningly large number of its casualties):

According to the Northern Ireland Police Service and the Northern Ireland Statistics Agency, from the start of The Troubles until 1998, over three thousand and five hundred people were killed, and an estimated fifty thousand were injured in sectarian violence.

In the twenty-five years since the agreement was reached there have been about one hundred sixty-four security-related deaths. But dont think of them just as numbers, because they are not.

Tunisia's minister of interior has banned two prominent opposition groups, the National Salvation Front (NSF) and the Ennahda movement, from holding meetings, a document obtained by Middle East Eye shows.

The decree came the same day that Ennahda's leader Rached Ghannouchi was arrested when security forces raided his home and took him to a police station for questioning. He was reportedly transferred to a hospital when his health deteriorated.

Security forces also raided the movement's main headquarters on Monday and asked individuals to leave it after a statement was issued about Ghannouchi's arrest. They were later shut down and has remained closed.

The Challenges of Conducting Open Source Research on China "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Peoples Republic of China is well known for its efforts to restrict the free flow of information online. With this in mind, this guide provides an overview of some of the challenges facing open source researchers investigating China-  focusing primarily on those outside China. For those who are just getting started in open source research on China, it is designed to give an idea of the difficulties you may face. Since 2017 evolving censorship tactics and increased regulations that reduce anonymity online have made open source research on China increasingly difficult. Methodologies that researchers have used successfully in the past are often rendered useless by new restrictions if Chinese authorities become aware of them. Access to Chinese websites and social media apps, as well as methods for investigating them, are therefore currently shrinking.

The current range of difficulties may sound bleak and to a certain extent it is but that doesnt mean that people arent finding creative ways to work around them, or that there arent clear ways that developers and other researchers can work to improve things. To better understand the current situation, Bellingcat interviewed a dozen China researchers who specialise in tech or human rights, including in Xinjiang and Tibet, about the challenges theyre facing doing open source research on China.

Shrinking Access to the Chinese Web

In 2017, shortly after the mass detention campaign targeting Muslim minorities began in Xinjiang, it was still possible to find a lot of information about what was happening there on Chinese websites and social media platforms. Procurement notices showing bids for construction work in re-education camps were posted on government websites and could be archived by researchers; these documents often included valuable information such as the camps address.  Images of opening ceremonies of factories where forced labour was reported- were posted on social media platforms such as Weixin.  In other, now deleted, social media posts Communist Party officials shared pictures of themselves living together with Uyghur families as part of the Becoming Family program which Chinese authorities claim is designed to foster ethnic harmony, but Human Rights Watch has...

German Artist Refuses Award After His AI Image Wins Prestigious Photography Prize "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

German artist refuses award after his AI image wins prestigious photography prize:

There's some controversy in the photography world as an AI-generated image won a major prize at a prestigious competition, PetaPixel has reported. An piece called The Electrician by Boris Eldagsen took first prize in the Creative category at the World Photography Organization's Sony World Photography Awards despite not being taken by a camera. Eldagsen subsequently refused the award, saying "AI is not photography. I applied [...] to find out if the competitions are prepared for AI images to enter. They are not."

Eldagsen's image is part of a series called PSEUDOMNESIA: Fake Memories, designed to evoke a photographic style of the 1940s. However, they are in reality "fake memories of a past, that never existed, that no one photographed. These images were imagined by language and re-edited more between 20 to 40 times through AI image generators, combining 'inpainting', 'outpainting', and 'prompt whispering' techniques."

In a blog, Eldagsen explained that he used his experience as a photographer to create the prize-winning image, acting as a director of the process with the AI generators as "co-creators." Although the work is inspired by photography, he said that the point of the submission is that it is not photography. "Participating in open calls, I want to speed up the process of the Award organizers to become aware of this difference and create separate competitions for AI-generated images," he said.

Eldagsen subsequently declined the prize. "Thank you for selecting my image and making this a historic moment, as it is the first AI-generated image to win in a prestigious international photography competition," he wrote. "How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn't feel right, does it? AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.

When does the processing of a 'photograph' become unacceptable? Techniques such as burning and dodging, plus various types of film processing, can all change the image that is finally produced. Digital photographs can be even more easily modified. At what point does it become an entirely new genre. Does the method of production really matter? [JR]

Probing the Shifting Surface of Icy Moons

In celebration of the recent JUICE launch, a few thoughts on what were learning about Ganymede, with eight years to go before the spacecraft enters the system and eventually settles into orbit around the icy moon. Specifically, lets consider a paper just published in Icarus that offers results applicable not just to Ganymede but also Europa and Enceladus, those fascinating and possibly life-bearing worlds. We learn that when we look at the surface of an icy moon, were seeing in part the result of quakes within its structure caused by the gravitational pull of the parent planet.

Image: ESAs latest interplanetary mission, Juice, lifted off on anAriane 5 rocketfromEuropes Spaceportin French 09:14 local time/08:14 EDT on 14 April 2023 to begin its eight-year journey to Jupiter, where it will study in detail the gas giant planets three large ocean-bearing moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Credit: ESA.

The Icarus paper homes in on the link between such quakes, long presumed to occur given our understanding of gravitational interactions, and the landslides observable on the surface of icy moons. Its one thing to tag steep ridges surrounded by flat terrain as the result of ice volcanoes spouting liquid, but we also find the same result on moons whose surface temperature makes this explanation unlikely.

Thus the new work, described by lead author Mackenzie Mills (University of Arizona), who analyzed the physical pummeling icy terrain takes during tidally induced moonquakes:

We found the surface shaking from moonquakes would be enough to cause surface material to rush downhill in landslides. Weve estimated the size of moonquakes and how big the landslides could be. This helps us understand how landslides might be shaping moon surfaces over time.

The intricate relationships between the FIN7 group and members of the Conti ransomware gang "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A new malware, dubbed Domino, developed by the FIN7 cybercrime group has been used by the now-defunct Conti ransomware gang.

IBM Security X-Force researchers recently discovered a new malware family, called Domino, which was created by developers associated with the FIN7 cybercriminal group (tracked by X-Force as ITG14).

FIN7 is a Russian criminal group (aka Carbanak) that has been active since mid-2015, it focuses on restaurants, gambling, and hospitality industries in the US to harvest financial information that was used in attacks or sold in cybercrime marketplaces.

IBM Security X-Force reported that former members of the now-defunct Conti gang have been using Domino since at least late February 2023. The threat actors used the malware to deliver either the Project Nemesis information stealer or other backdoors and tools such as Cobalt Strike.

This discovery is very important because demonstrates the cooperation among the groups and their members.

Since late February 2023, Domino Backdoor campaigns have been observed using the Dave Loader, which we have linked to the Trickbot/Conti syndicate and its former members. reads the report published by IBM Security X-Force. Dominos code shows overlap with the Lizar (aka Tirion, Diceloader) malware family, leading us to suspect that it was created by current or former ITG14 developers. One of Dominos final payloads is the Project Nemesis infostealer. Project Nemesis was first advertised on the dark web in December 2021, though has been rarely used since then.

In attacks on higher-value targets instead of downloading the Project Nemesis, the Domino Backdoor contacts a C2 to download post-exploitation tools such as Cobalt Strike.

3D printed Hagrid's lantern with a magic wand

[Elenavercher] loves engaging her primary school students, inspiring their imagination as well as teaching them the design thinking process. She has found that the very accessible rapid prototyping culture of 3D printing, micro:bit, and the like are perfect for teaching her students problem-solving and teamwork, and is always coming up with new lessons that will catch their attention. That brings us to her latest design, an interactive lantern and wand, which you could say is of the wizarding variety.

The lantern and the wand each have an integrated micro:bit serving as their brains. When the user shakes the wand, releasing a spell, the micro:bit in the wand, sends a user-defined number to the micro:bit in the lantern. The lantern has NeoPixels built-in, which then turn on, illuminating the lantern. When the user presses a button on the micro:bit instead of shaking it, the wand sends a signal to the lantern that tells it to turn off. Pretty simple, right?
