This Accidental Developer Wants To Show You How To Revitalize Your Neighborhood "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Mike Keen, a small-scale developer in South Bend, IN.

After years of teaching urban studies and sustainability in the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Mike Keen decided to walk his talk and began to have meetings at his house to discuss how to make his local neighborhoods a more prosperous place.

I became what I sometimes refer to as the accidental developer, said Keen. Because once he started revitalizing his neighborhood through small, incremental development, he never stopped.

All too often, the job of development is handed to large developers with large swaths of cash to implement an all-at-once, large-scale developmentwhich might not always work for the city. Additionally, big developers tend to stay away from neighborhoods like Keens, which was experiencing a decline seen in many North American neighborhoods, evidenced by empty lots, old houses, closed-down buildings, and a lack of third places.

Keen knew something needed to change for South Bend neighborhoods to become more prosperous places. So, Keen started with the smaller first steps of attending conferences, and reaching out and connecting people. Along with hosting small-scale developer conversations at his home, Keen helped facilitate the Incremental Development Alliance to conduct workshops in South Bend to teach the community about...

An Oldie "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Back in the mid 90s I had an unusual experience, in which I was caught in the blast-corona of Operation Solar Sundevil the Secret Services attempt to gain relevance in cybersecurity [wik]. My role was small but it made me realize that the government, at that time, was ignorant enough that they could easily be stampeded into doing stupid things, a form of terrorism by stupid cop which I later re-framed as a denial of clue attack.

All of that led me to formulate some doctrines for cyberinsurgency, which I ran by a bunch of fellow paranoid security people, and eventually wrote down. [cyberinsurgency] This was all done during a couple of nights of creative up-swing, the culmination of decades of observation and frustration. I think the hardest part was to write in a tone that was different enough from my usual tone of the time that maybe it wouldnt be immediately recognizable.

Dear Wage Slave:

Times have changed, and they change constantly.

But, one constant of change is that people are expected/required to work for a living, and our society has formed itself as a sort of gigantic trap into which you are born: you need a job, you need a boss, you need a salary and benefits, or youre treated like garbage.

Youre treated like garbage, anyway, in case you didnt notice unless youre one of the lucky 1% who have privilege, a nice house, stock options, and some career mobility. If youre like most people, you work for someone who acts as though they owe you nothing, and you should be grateful that theyre willing to hire you to do whatever task they put before you. In the old days (the 1880s to 1920s that is) anarchists spoke to wage slaves, minors, laborers, and members of the permanent underclass, and told them, they act like they owe you nothing, but the truth is you owe them nothing, either. Lie, cheat, steal, kill, defraud the rich or your corporate masters go ahead, what you are doing is pursuing the process of building equity in your brand, just the way that they got to where they are.

Vast numbers of you are being encouraged to join the gig economy which is a nice way of saying the economy that you have no control over whatsoever and that is happening in several important places:

  • More money is being spent on cloud computing i.e.: systems that are remotely configured and managed by independent operators that owe onl...

The Last Leg of the Longest Butterfly Migration Identified (Maria)

The author writes, Every year, painted lady butterflies born in Europe embark south on an epic journey to Africa. Now, researchers know exactly where on the continent these long-haul travelers spend their winter vacation. From December through February, after flying across the Sahara in the fall, the orange-and-brown-winged insects set up camp and breed in savannas and highlands across central Africa, scientists report April 10 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As the rainy season brings greenery to the region, the butterflies and their caterpillar offspring feast on a variety of plants until their wintering spots dry up. Then the butterflies fly north to Europe. The species one of the most common butterflies in the world boasts the longest round-trip journey of any butterfly.

Wealthy Lifestyles Drain Urban Water Resources, Study Finds "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

In 2022, the news broke that Southern California celebrities were using far more than their fair share of water during an ongoing drought. Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union went more than 489,000 gallons over water limits in May of that year because of problems with their pool, while Sylvester Stallone drew 533 percent over his monthly water budget in a bid to save mature trees on his property.

It turns out that excesses like these are not isolated incidents. A new study published in Nature Sustainability Monday found that the pools and gardens of the wealthy pose a major threat to urban water security worldwide.

Climate change and population growth mean that water is becoming a more precious resource in big cities, but we have shown that social inequality is the biggest problem for poorer people getting access to water for their everyday needs, study co-author and University of Reading hydrologist Professor Hannah Cloke said in a press release.

The research used South Africas Cape Town as a case study. The city is both highly unequal and survived a major drought from 2015 to 2017. During this time, reservoirs shrank to 12.3 percent of normal levels, leading officials to warn people to conserve water and avoid a Day Zero at which point nothing would be left.

The researchers used a model to look at water use across Cape Towns income brackets both before and during the drought. According to the 2020 census, Cape Town was 1.4 percent elite, 12.3 percent upper-middle income, 24.8 percent lower-middle income, 40.5 percent lower income and 21 percent informal dwellers who live in shanty...

The statement came on the last day of French President Emmanuel Macrons visit to China from Wednesday to Friday of last week.

Square-Wheeled Bike Is Actually An Amazing Tracked Build "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The invention of the wheel is considered one of the crowning achievements of early humanity. Squares dont roll, after all. [The Q] decided to build a square-wheeled bike anyway, with a neat tracked setup that makes for an awesome visual gag.

The wheels are made out of C-angle steel, making them both stout and incredibly heavy. While they dont really need the additional structure for strength, they feature spokes which mount a central hub for attaching the wheels to a bicycle axle. The squares arent designed to roll, though. Instead, they are fitted with gears and rollers, upon which a track made of bicycle chain and tires is fitted. When the rider pedals, this turns the track, propelling the bike along. Cleverly, the track mechanism is neatly hidden by some framing, confusing passers-by.

The riding experience is noisy, thanks to the tracks. Theres also plenty of rolling resistance. Its unlikely bikes like these will become mainstream transport anytime soon,...

Russian colonialism, Eastern Europe and global anti-colonial struggles

In recent years, there has been a growing tendency among scholars and activists in Eastern Europe to draw parallels and links between the postcolonial and the postsocialist. In its extreme, as Adem Ferizaj argues in his recent review, the use of postcolonial approaches in the context of postsocialism leads to the false analogy that postsocialism is more or less the postcolonialism of all populations affected by the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Could biodiversity be a key to better forest carbon storage in Europe? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

This May, Scarabaeus laticollis will return to Frances southeast and to one of Europes biggest plantation forests. Eighty of these lowly Old World dung beetles, first described by the naturalist Linnaeus in 1767, will be reintroduced at the tang de Cousseau National Reserve as a first step to improving forest biodiversity there. Unlike other dung beetles, S. laticollis not only rolls dung into neat balls, but also takes them underground, recycling important soil nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous, while dispersing grass and tree seeds. Importantly, local breeds of cattle which arent given antibiotics, resulting in drug-free dung have also been introduced to graze the land. The dung beetles arrival marks the first release under the new European Wildlife Comeback Fund (EWCF) which aims at reintroducing a variety of native animals across the continent, including keystone species like the dung beetle, the red deer (Cervus elaphus) and fallow deer (Dama dama) in the Danube Delta, Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in northwest Poland, and Sorraia horses (Equus ferus caballus) in Portugals Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. EWCF is a project of Rewilding Europe along with other conservation and funding partners. A key but controversial justification supports these biodiversity enhancements, according to some conservationists. Restoring natural balance to forests has the potential to boost their ability to store carbon, says Sophie Monsarrat, Rewilding Europes rewilding manager. Dung beetles in France. While they may not look important, dung beetles, of which there are around 60 species in Europe, are a keystone species. TheyThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Intel Foundry Services Partners With Arm to Manufacture Next-Generation Mobile Chips "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Intel Foundry Services partners with Arm to manufacture next-generation mobile chips:

Intel Corp. said today its Intel Foundry Services business unit is partnering with the British chip design firm Arm Ltd. to enable semiconductor designers to build low-power systems-on-chip on its cutting-edge manufacturing process.

The companies will initially focus on mobile SoC designs before expanding the deal to cover chips for automotive, internet of things, data center, aerospace and government applications. Under the agreement, customers that use Arm's designs as the basis of their chips will be able to use Intel's 18A process technology to manufacture their products.

The deal is said to be a big boon for customers, since Intel 18A is a more advanced process with capacity in both the U.S. and Europe. It will allow customers to design chips using electronic design automation software from third-party suppliers. EDA software is used by semiconductor engineers to create processor blueprints. The result will be more powerful processors with greater energy efficiency, Intel said.

Under the initiative, IFS and Arm will work together on design technology co-optimization, wherein chip design and process manufacturing are optimized to improve the power, performance and cost of Arm-based cores using the Intel 18A technology. Intel 18A is said to leverage two new technologies, including PowerVia for optimal power delivery and RibbonFET "gate all around" transistor architecture, which ensures optimal performance and power.

As part of this cooperation, IFS and Arm plan to develop a mobile reference design to demonstrate the technology to customers.

The deal is another key milestone for IFS, following its partnership with the Taiwanese semiconductor firm MediaTek Inc. that was announced last July. Intel set up the foundry business in 2021 to manufacture chips for other companies based on their own custom designs.

VIDEO | Fight for survival: The battle to save the last Tapanuli orangutans "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

In 2017, the Tapanuli orangutan was identified as a new species of great ape and immediately became the most endangered great ape on the planet, with a total population of less than 800. The orangutans are restricted to a small area of the Batang Toru ecosystem in Indonesias North Sumatra province, where they face threats from the illegal wildlife trade, mining, conflicts with humans, and a planned hydroelectric dam.  A 2021 study found that the great apes have lost almost 97.5% of their habitat over the past 130 years. The $1.6 billion dam project, funded and built by Chinese companies and expected to supply clean electricity to North Sumatra, risks further fragmentation of their habitat and threatens to cut off the connectivity between separate population groups, making prospects for their survival even more difficult. Despite efforts by activists, locals and conservation groups, the dam project is still under construction, pushing the Tapanuli orangutan ever closer to the brink of extinction. Republicans are failing at debt ceiling hostage taking "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The deadline is looming for the debt ceiling to be raised to avoid the US government going into some sort of default, never a good thing. The early deadlines have already passed with some accounting devices being used to avoid default so far but June 4th is said to be the final deadline for getting the ceiling raised.

Republicans in the House of Representatives, ostensibly led by speaker Kevin McCarthy but actually by the nutter caucus of the party, have demanded that Joe Biden agree to negotiations on spending cuts before they will raise the ceiling. But Biden has said that while he is willing to negotiate on the budget, he will not do so as part of the debt ceiling. Biden has released his own budget and asked the Republicans to do the same before any negotiations can begin but so far they have not been able to come up with a budget that will satisfy the disparate elements of their caucus, especially the nutters who are now so dominant.

The problem for Republicans is that many of the programs they want to cut are those that the public wants to preserve.

In the federal budget standoff, the majority of U.S. adults are asking lawmakers to pull off the impossible: Cut the overall size of government, but also devote more money to the most popular and expensive programs.
Six in 10 U.S. adults say the government spends too much money. But majorities also favor more funding for infrastructure, health care and Social Security the kind of commitments that would make efforts to shrink the government unworkable and politically risky ahead of the 2024 elections.

Biden this month proposed a budget that would trim deficits by nearly $3 trillion over 10 years, but his plan contains a mix of tax increases on the wealthy and new spending that led GOP lawmakers to declare it dead on arrival. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is insisting on budget talks with the White House but has not produced a plan of his own to cut deficits, which Biden has said is a prerequisite for negotiations.

Roughly 6 in 10 adults say the government is spending too little on education, health care, infrastructure and Social Security, as well as assistance to the poor and Medicare. About half say government is spending too little on border security, child care assistance, drug rehabilitation, the environment and law enforcement.

Kevin Drum also points to polls that show that Americans are pretty satisfied with the current spending priorities, and sums up the general sentiment.

Overall, the primary message of this poll, and others like it, is that status quo bias is strong. The American public has consistently...

Beyond Aesthetics: How a Web Design Agency Can Improve Your Websites Performance "IndyWatch Feed World"

In todays digital age, having a website is no longer just an option for businesses, but a necessity. A website serves as a virtual storefront, providing potential customers with a glimpse into what your company offers and why they should choose you over your competitors. However, having a site is not enough; its equally important to have one that performs well. Thats where a web design agency comes in. In this blog post, well explore how a web design agency can improve your sites performance beyond aesthetics.

Before we dive into the details, lets first define what we mean by website performance. Website performance refers to how well a site functions in terms of speed, usability, accessibility, and search engine optimization (SEO). A well-performing website loads quickly is easy to navigate, can be used by people with disabilities, and ranks high in search engine results. These factors all contribute to a positive user experience and can ultimately lead to increased traffic, engagement, and conversions.

Now, lets discuss how a web design agency can improve your websites performance beyond aesthetics.

1. Speed Optimization

Source: forbes.com

One of the most important factors in website performance is speed. If your website takes too long to load, visitors are likely to leave before they even see your content. A web design agency can optimize your websites speed by compressing images, minifying code, and leveraging browser caching. They can also recommend a reliable web hosting provider and implement a content delivery network (CDN) to ensure your website loads quickly no matter where the user is located.

2. Usability and Accessibility

Your website should be easy to navigate and use, regardless of the users device or ability. A web design agency can ensure your websites usability and accessibility by following best practices in web design and development. They can also conduct user testing to identify any issues that may be hindering the user experience. Additionally, they can implement features such as responsive design, whic...

Climate change compounding inequalities faced by women in agriculture, FAO says "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Women working in agriculture tend to do so under highly unfavourable conditions often in the face of climate-induced weather shocks and in situations of conflict, a new report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) concludes.

The report provides insight into womens participation in agrifood systems at every step of the chain, from production to consumption. It comes more than a decade after the last publication of its kind by the FAO.

Agriculture and food systems are a significant employer for women globally and are a more critical source of livelihood for women than for men, the report says.

However, women face inequalities that constrain their full participation in the sector, it warns. They are likely to work under worse conditions than men, taking informal, part-time, labour-intensive and low-skilled jobs at higher rates, and earning 82 cents for every dollar men earn.

Climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic have also affected womens productivity in agrifood systems, the report notes. For example, women are less likely than men to see their work demands decrease during periods of extreme heat.

Addressing inequalities and empowering women would improve their well-being and that of their households, the report says. Doing so would also reduce hunger, increase incomes and strengthen resilience.

Despite this, the authors warn that few national policies have specific targets to address womens inequalities in agrifood systems. And while national climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have seen a modest improvement on gender equality and womens rights over the past decade, inclusion of these issues is often superficial.

Here, Carbon Brief summarises the key messages from the FAOs landmark report.

Womens roles

The new report, The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems, is much broader than the FAOs previous work on gender, says Dr Lauren Phillips, the deputy director of the FAOs inclusive rural transformation and gender equality division. The 2011 report focused on women in agriculture alone.

Phillips, one of the lead authors of the new report, tells Carbon Brief that, in contrast, the new iteration covers all agrifood systems and all phases of production, with data disaggreg...

Multiphysics Analysis and Reliability for 5G/6G Antenna System Design "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Making 5G/6G technology real requires an increased density of more complex electronic systems in smaller form factors. As 5G/6G proliferates into safety critical systems and infrastructure, such as autonomous vehicles and healthcare, reliability is paramount.

Engineers must determine the performance and the lifetime of the systems they are designing and deploying. The increased density of components increases the interdependency of design considerations. For example, electromagnetic performance can no longer be considered in isolation from thermal and mechanical performance as they impact each other and are interdependent. Thermal issues are now one of the primary failure modes for electronic systems.

Register now for this free webinar.

Studying antenna array and tower structural integrity, you need to account for electro-thermal effects and thermal impact on data coverage. This includes interference, optimizing antenna design, and performance under severe wind loads with critical angles of attack to incorporate mechanical effects in an integrated workflow to determine thermal stress-induced deformation at the PCB level or the more detailed solder ball level to random model vibration, drop test, and fatigue studies.

All can help estimate the complete system performance and reliability under various external circumstances. Ansys dedicated electronics reliability solutions can make lifetime predictions by computing the cumulative damage index, time to failure, and life curve.

What You Will Learn

  • Predict electrical performance drift under varying environmental conditions and thermal impact on RF link margin
  • Assess and evaluate thermal management systems for cost/reliability tradeoffs
  • Understand antenna deformation due to mechanical loads and structural specifications

Quest for Religious War: How Israel is Unifying Arabs and Muslims around Palestine "IndyWatch Feed World"

By ordering a brutal attack against Palestinian worshipers inside Al-Aqsa Mosque on the 14th day of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu knew very well that the Palestinians would retaliate.

Netanyahus motive should be clear. He wanted to generate a distraction from the mass protests that have rocked Israel, starting in January, and divided Israeli society around ideological and political lines, in ways never witnessed before.

Unwilling to relinquish his hard-earned achievement of finally winning a decisive election and forming an entirely rightwing coalition while fearing that major concessions to his political rivals could eventually dissolve his government, Netanyahu set his sights on the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

History has proven that Israeli attacks on Palestinian holy places are a guarantor of a Palestinian response. For Netanyahu and also his National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, the price of Palestinian retaliation was worth the political gains of unifying Israelis of all political backgrounds behind them. For Ben-Gvir, in particular, the attack against Al-Aqsa would reassure his far-right religious constituency of his commitment to restoring full Israeli Jewish sovereignty over Palestinian Muslim and Christian holy places in the occupied city.

What Netanyahu and his allies may have not anticipated, however, is the intensity of the Palestinian response as hundreds of rockets were fired, not only from besieged Gaza but, even more strategically important, from South Lebanon, towards the northern and southern parts of the country.

Though some damage was reported, the attacks were a political game changer, as it was the first time in years that fighters in two Arab countries coordinated their retaliatory action against Israel and hit back simultaneously.

It will be difficult for Netanyahu to claim any kind of victory after this, unless he takes his country to a major war on two fronts three, if we are to consider the rise of armed resistance in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank.

However, even a major war could backfire. During the Israeli attack on Gaza in 2014, Israel struggled to sustain a single military front as the war lasted 51 days, leading to an Israeli munition crisis. Were it not for the decision......

Summary: The crimes of Sirius Open Source are very serious; weve come to the point now where its more or less a countdown ahead of arrests or class action lawsuit (or both)

TODAY we published a lot of material about Sirius Open Source and since recording the above video weve published a little more.

In light of what Standard Life told us last night (they sent a letter at night, which is unusual for firms that work 9 to 5), were now progressing the case against a company that defrauded GNU/Linux system administrators, Free software specialists, programmers and so on.

This is now a criminal matter. Several people need to be arrested.

The issue is further complicated by an NDA signed with the Gates Foundation (we dont even know the details of it). The principal fraudster now resides in Washington, the state. To get full accountability they will likely have to issue an extradition warrant (sent from authorities in the UK to the US). This adds a number of new dimensions, including the divorce. The financial fugitive has many liabilities in the UK. Some of these issues are discussed in length in the video above.

Buharism is dead, long live Buharism "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Buharism, the social and economic outlook of Nigerias outgoing president, did not seek an alternative to neoliberal globalization, but sought to consolidate Nigerias place in it.

In the wake of the hard-fought and widely unpopular presidential victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigerias 2023 presidential election, it is easily forgotten that the ruling partys initial triumph in 2015 seemed to represent the flowering of popular aspiration.

Bearing change as its campaign slogan, the party came to power in the first victory by an opposition party, with its presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari defeating Goodluck Jonathan of the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had held power since Nigerias return to democracy in 1999.

But the APC seemed to represent change in more fundamental ways. The partys rise was propelled by popular protest against austerity policies, chief of which was the PDPs attempt to remove Nigerias fuel subsidy. Having overseen a period of commercial expansion, GDP growth, and intensified privatization of state-owned enterprises, the PDP, it appeared, had overplayed its hand in attempting to remove Nigerias meager but essential form of social welfare derived from the countrys vast petroleum resources.

When the PDP government announced a planned removal of the subsidy in 2012, prominent opposition party leaderswho only a year later would unite to form the APCjoined unionists, civil society groups, and youth activists in a nationwide protest. The ensuing general strike and #OccupyNigeria protests contributed to the downfall of the PDP government at the same time as social movements and political parties were challenging orthodox economic regimes across the globe.

Thus, seen as arriving in the wake of candidates such as Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn, and parties such as Podemos, and Syriza, who used popular discontent with austerity as a springboard to elected office, it is understandable that some observers hoped the APC could succeed in breaking with the assumptions of neoliberal technocratic management.

As such, Buharis victory can be considered a product of what has been called the end of the end of history,a period concurrently marked by the breakdown of the neolibe...

Bad News: Copyright Industry Attacks on the Internets Plumbing are Increasing and Succeeding "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Bad news: copyright industry attacks on the Internet's plumbing are increasing and succeeding:

Back in October 2021, Walled Culture wrote about a ruling from a US judge. It concerned an attempt to make the content delivery network (CDN) Cloudflare, which is simply part of the Internet's plumbing, responsible for what flows through its connections. The judge rightly decided: "a reasonable jury could not at least on this record conclude that Cloudflare materially contributes to the underlying copyright infringement".

A similar case in Germany was brought by Sony Music against the free, recursive, anycast DNS platform Quad9. Like CDNs, DNS platforms are crucial services that ensure that the Internet can function smoothly; they are not involved with any of the sites that may be accessed as a result of their services. In particular, they have no knowledge of whether copyright material on those sites is authorised or not. Unfortunately, two regional courts in Germany don't seem to understand that point, and have issued judgments against Quad9. Its FAQ on one of the cases explains why this is a dreadful result for the entire Internet:

The court argues with the German law principle of "interferer liability" the so-called "Stoererhaftung", which allows holding uninvolved third parties liable for an infringement if they have in some way adequately and causally contributed to the infringement of a protected legal interest. If DNS resolvers can be held liable as interferers, this would set a dangerous precedent for all services used in retrieving web pages. Providers of browsers, operating systems or antivirus software could be held liable as interferers on the same grounds if they do not prevent the accessibility of copyright-infringing websites.

Now an Italian court has confirmed a previous ruling that Cloudflare must block certain online sites accused of making available unauthorised copies of material. That's unfortunate, since taken with the German court rulings it is likely to encourage the copyright industry to widen its attack on the Internet'...

College students are one thing, but middle school and high school kids are completely different beasts. Ive done this before, and mainly what I come away with is the feeling that we dont pay teachers enough.

Im meeting with 7th and 10th grade biology classes this morning and afternoon. Im bringing in a lot of baby spiderlings which are tiny and hard to see, not impressive at all, and a couple of larger adults. Ive also got several egg sacs, one of which is very, very close to eclosion maybe well get a sudden eruption of spiderlings, which would be exciting. Im going to propose leaving a half dozen spiderlings in the classrooms, along with a supply of wingless fruit flies, and recommend that they take care of them for a few weeks, and then on some bright spring day, to release them in a grassy area near the school.

Ive been researching lesson plans lately, and unfortunately, almost all of them have been geared for younger kids K-6. Im not going to talk down to this group, so I figure Ill just explain a few scientific details and open the floor to questions.

Theyre going to eat me alive, arent they?

[Jeff Lau]s Mitsubishi 3000GT comes with all the essential features youd expect in a fancy sports car from 1993: pop-up headlights, movable spoilers, and a fully-functional telephone handset in the center console. The phone was fully functional until North Americas first-generation AMPS cellular network was shut down back in 2008, since then, it hasnt done much but show NO SVC on the display. That is, until [Jeff] decided to build a Bluetooth adapter that lets it connect to a modern smartphone.

The easy solution would have been to simply connect the handsets speaker and microphone to a standard Bluetooth headset, but that would have destroyed the 1990s aesthetic it had going on. So what [Jeff] did instead was construct a plug-in module that hooks up to the phones base station in the trunk and communicates directly with all the existing systems. That way, the phone works in exactly the same way it always did: the rad...

In Blue Colorado, Oil and Gas Companies Try a New Approach to Woo Democrats "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Colorados largest oil and gas companies, which typically favor conservative legislators, gave tens of thousands of dollars to independent expenditure committees that funded advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts in 2022 for the states Democratic House speaker and other lawmakers positioned to consider bills that could impact how the fossil fuel industry operates.

Lobbyists registered to represent energy interests on bills being debated in the General Assembly this spring also donated thousands of dollars to the Colorado Democratic Party and gave to House Speaker Julie McCluskie and other Democratic politicians.

The petroleum industry also contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican independent expenditure committees in last years midterms. According to Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush and a law professor at the University of Minnesota, the strategy follows a national playbook for well-heeled oil and gas interests in which they put 80 percent of their money behind right-of-center candidates and the remaining 20 percent to progressives.

The political tension between the legislative push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and a fossil fuel industry that is a major economic driver has intensified in the last decade.

In solidly blue Colorado, the energy industrys preferred party is in the minority. Democrats hold a majority in both the 65-member House and the 35-member Senate, as well as occupying the offices of governor, attorney general, and secretary of state. Rather than lose seats in 2022, the party gained two spots in the Senate and five in the House, bolstering a majority its held since 2018.

Oil and gas companies strategy is to give money to key Democrats they can woo over to their side we find that in Congress as well, said Painter. They dont have to have the majority of Democrats; they just need to get enough to vote their way to block legislation.

In Colorado, theres much at stake. The ...

Why Stormont cannot be fixed through absence, political inertia or even browbeating the DUP "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

there seemed no ground in front of my feet, only the abyss of star-studded space falling away forever.

David Abrams

Asked by Ian Dale the other night on LBC whether the Biden visit would have an effect, I gave him the obvious answer which is that since only the DUP (the current fulcrum around which the fate of the Assembly revolves) can decide, it changes nothing.

Aside from political considerations, US Presidential visits are fun especially for the people who really have made the Belfast Agreement work, ie the plain folk of Northern Ireland. Compared to other parts of the UK and NI we do alright in that regard.

Apart from holding out the promise of a US investment trip his speech was pro forma public diplomacy. Instead of trying to fruitlessly pressurise the immovable object that is the DUP, he chose to sing a paean or three on the USs debt to Ulster Scots.

That was it. Its as though he had anticipated Arlenes somewhat overwrought accusation that Biden hated the UK on GB News. It even included a confession that he was as English and French as he was Irish. [But theres no votes in the other two, eh? Ed]

As a former First Minister it was injudicious, but an indication of the effects of the long siege of Northern Irish Protestants, who are now just one of three minorities in NI, whose versions of history they feel are routinely airbrushed from the official account.

Arlenes outburst drew much criticism, not least because at one time, as a two times victim of the Provisional IRA shed been seen by many moderate Catholics as holding out an olive branch when early in her term she attended a GAA match.

They tend to forget it ended in a widespread vilification/witch-hunt over an issue that few jobbing journalists ever understood and over which the DUPs long coalition partner had been complicit in keeping the scandalous details from rival politicians.

Apart from a brief sojourn during Covid, Stormont and its institutions have barely worked since the day Sinn Fin walked out in January 2017. The following election fuelled a surge for tribal nationalism which effectively sidelined its pluralist cousins.

The short effect on the other side was to shore up the DUP, but in 2022 voters (as they have been doing from the term Protestant in successive censuses) trended somewhat...

New world in Angolas relic forests threatened by fires: scientists NAMBA MOUNTAINS, Angola Remote pockets of species-rich afromontane forest in Angolas Namba Mountains will be lost if nothing is done to stop uncontrolled fires that threaten to destroy them, scientists warn. These forests are believed to be relics from a time when the habitat was more widespreadduring the earths glacial cycles, the last of which ended 10,000-12,000 years ago, said Martim Melo, a researcher at the University of Portos Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources. The Secret Talents of Strong Citizens "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Emma Durand-Wood is a Strong Towns member and advocate in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Look forward to seeing her writing regularly on Thursday mornings!

Everybody has a talent, everybodys got something to give.

Ive heard those lyrics from Metric dozens of times. In my neighborhood, theres an artist who runs the most wonderful summer art camps for kids, and she uses this song as the soundtrack to the highlight video she creates for each group of campers. The song is the perfect accompaniment to the reel of photos of smiling, creative, and gloriously paint- and glitter-covered kids making art with their friends. The feel-good soundtrack reminds us that all of us have something we're good at / all of us have a gift that makes us special and unique.

Its funny: as a parent, its easy for me to honestly and enthusiastically praise my kids and see their particular strengths and skills. But reflect upon my own talents? Um I guess Im good at making popcorn?? I can hold my own at Scattergories. But no one is coming to me for gardening advice or help choosing a new phone.

As adults, many of us focus on the skills and tendencies we wish we had, and overlook the many things we are naturally good at and come easily to us.

More than anything, the thing that amazes and inspires me about the power that everyday people have to make their places better is this: Everyone has something to contribute, and when you get even just a handful of skills and talents working toward the same goal, remarkable things can happen.

Ive thought about this a lot over the past few years, as Ive been involved with a hodgepodge of grassroots groups that have formed to do everything from planting street trees and fighting for safer streets, to hosting neighborhood picnics and promot...

EPA Proposes Major Air Pollution Reforms to Lower Residents Cancer Risk Near Industrial Facilities "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed a series of major reforms this past week to slash toxic air pollution at chemical plants and facilities that sterilize medical equipment, nearly 18 months after ProPublica reported how an estimated 74 million Americans were exposed to elevated cancer risk from these businesses.

The first set of rules place stricter limits on roughly 80 air pollutants, according to EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. The list includes potent cancer-causing chemicals such as ethylene oxide, which is used to sterilize medical equipment, and chloroprene, an ingredient in synthetic rubber. The proposal, which would affect more than 200 manufacturers, requires routine air monitoring around these chemical plants, something local communities have long requested.

Regan announced the first wave of changes last Thursday at a press conference in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. The area falls within an 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi River known as Cancer Alley due to its concentration of industrial polluters, many of which are located near communities of color.

For generations, our most vulnerable communities have unjustly borne the burden of breathing unsafe, polluted air, Regan said in a statement. Every child in this country deserves clean air to breathe, and EPA will use every available tool to make that vision a reality.

The EPA declined to make any agency employees available for an interview.

Ultra-luminous X-ray sources defy Eddington limit and unlock universal secrets "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The mystery of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) and their astonishing brightness has been partially unraveled through a recent study utilizing NASAs NuSTAR.

Scientists have long been perplexed by ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), cosmic objects that emit about 10 million times more energy than the Sun and appear to break the Eddington limit a physical boundary that determines the maximum brightness of an object based on its mass. In a groundbreaking study published in The Astrophysical Journal, researchers have confirmed that these extraordinary light emitters surpass the Eddington limit, potentially due to their strong magnetic fields.

The effect of Eddington limit and magnetic fields

The Eddington limit plays a crucial role in determining the balance between the outward push of photons and the inward pull of an objects gravity. When an object reaches the Eddington limit, its light pushes away any gas or material falling toward it, thus controlling its brightness. The study focused on the ULX M82 X-2, a neutron star that was found to be stealing about 9 billion trillion tons of material from a neighboring star annually. The researchers calculations confirmed that M82 X-2 exceeds the Eddington limit.

The new study supports an alternative hypothesis that suggests strong magnetic fields can distort atoms into elongated shapes, reducing the photons ability to push atoms away and ultimately increasing an objects maximum brightness. By examining more ULXs, scientists may be able to further understand the role of magnetic fields in their extraordinary luminosity.

Help Us Report on Idahos Deteriorating Public Schools "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In Idahos aging schools, students often wear jackets in the winter to keep warm in the classroom. In late spring, they sweat, struggling to concentrate. At some schools, bathrooms are regularly closed because of deteriorating pipes. At others, staff spend hours blowing snow off the roof to prevent its collapse.

State officials arent fully aware of the extent of the schools problems the last full review of school buildings was done in 1993. Its hard to repair even the problems that have been logged because in order to get funding for facilities, school districts in Idaho have to clear a higher bar than those in almost any other state.

The Idaho Statesman and ProPublica looked at the conditions inside one school, which has been in disrepair for decades. Now we want to report on school building conditions across the state and how they affect you. Photos and videos of issues in your school are especially helpful and will guide our reporting.

You can fill out our brief form below or send an email to idahoschools@propublica.org.

Collapsing Roofs, Broken Toilets, Flooded Classrooms: Inside the Worst-Funded Schools in the Nation "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with the Idaho Statesman. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Jan Bayer sank into the couch in the family room of her Bonners Ferry, Idaho, home and stared at her phone, nervously awaiting a call. Her twin teenage daughters were nearby, equally anxious.

It was election night in March 2022, and Bayer, the superintendent of the Boundary County School District in a remote part of Idaho on the Canadian border, had spent months educating voters about a bond that would raise property taxes to replace one of her districts oldest and most dangerous buildings: Valley View Elementary School. Built just after World War II, the school was falling apart.

The walls were cracked. The pipes were disintegrating. The ceilings were water-stained. The electrical system was maxed out and the insulation was nearly nonexistent. Classrooms froze in the winter and baked in the summer. The roof, part of which had already collapsed once, was nearing the end of its lifespan. Outside, potholes pocked the parking lot and deep splits formed in warped sidewalks. The kindergarten playground, weathered from decades of brutal winters, had turned hazardous; at times, sharp screws protruded from some of the equipment, and kids routinely got splinters from the wooden crossbeams.

Most worrisome to Bayer and her staff: Kindergarten students had to cross a street multiple times a day just to navigate the sprawling six-building campus, a piecemeal attempt to add much-needed classroom space.

The bond promised to fix all that if voters approved it.

Youre just honestly praying for a miracle, Bayer said. I said a lot of prayers all day long, saying, OK, we can do this. We can do this.

At about 8:30 p.m., a call came in from the county clerk. More than 2,000 people voted, and about 54% of them supported the bond, the clerk said. Bayers heart sank and she broke into tears. In Idaho, a majority wasnt enough. The state is one of just two in the nation that require support from two-thirds of voters to pass a bond.

How to Combat Insider Threats "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Knowing that insider threats are a risk is one thing. Knowing how to fight them off is entirely another.

Dealing with issues of insider cyber risk can be different and nuanced. Its hard to admit that someone from within the company could not be who they say they are, and it takes a group effort to get these types of programs off the ground.

However, over one-third of businesses are impacted by insider threats every year, and US businesses face about 2.500 internal security breaches in the aggregate per day. These cases are out there. No company with any zero-trust initiatives can responsibly look the other way.

The question isnt why to build out an insider threat prevention program: its how.

The origin and impact of insider risk

To understand best how to combat them, it helps to know where insider threats originate and why.

As cited in TechJury, more than two out of three insider threats are caused by negligence. Fraud, financial gain, and intellectual property theft are the primary motivators, and trusted business partners typically account for 15-25% of the cases across all industries. Nine in ten result from human error.

What starts as a careless, disgruntled, or simply ignorant employee maneuver can result in credential theft, data loss, and unforeseen damage. These arent insignificant encounters: Credential theft can cost upwards of $850,000 per incident, and companies are now spending 60% more than they did three years ago combatting the effects of insider risk. In most cases (85%), companies cant even definitively determine the cost of the overall damage caused by these types of incidents.

Fortunately, some great products are out there to help organizations get a handle on the insider threat problem and make inroads into securing their digital enterprise from the inside out.

Anti-Piracy Mega-Firewall Could Render Italian ISPs Liable For Over-Blocking "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Pirate FireLast month a bill crafted to crack down on pirate IPTV services was unanimously approved by Italys Chamber of Deputies.

If passed by the Senate, broadcasters through telecoms regulator AGCOM will have new powers to compel internet service providers to block pirate streams in a matter of minutes, potentially seconds. Site-blocking measures to deal with piracy are nothing new in Italy, but by narrowing the blocking window, the window for correcting errors is narrowed too.

Italys Mega-Firewall

The Association of Italian Internet Providers (AIIP) represents the interests of small to medium-sized ISPs in Italy. Given that ISPs are already required to implement AGCOMs blocking instructions under the current regime, it follows that they will also have key responsibilities under the proposed rapid blocking system.

AIIP recently revealed that it had sent a memorandum to the authorities detailing its concerns over the current proposals, which are already in the final stages before becoming law.

President of AIIP, Giovanni Zorzoni, says that the objective appears to be the creation of a mega-firewall managed by AGCOM which will have the legal authority to compel internet service providers to implement it, regardless of the inherent risks.

The creation of a homogeneous infrastructure based on a synchronous filtering system, capable of interfacing simultaneously with the operators offering access to the Internet, with the CDNs and with the Cloud operators, constitutes a single susceptible point of failure to undermine the security and resilience of national networks, Zorzoni warns.

Critical Need to Protect Critical Infrastructure

AIIP says it has always been in favor of copyright protection but says the speed at which the blocking proposals are being pushed through is a cause for concern. AIIP says that in advance of the Senates forthcoming examination, it is seeking a reassessment to ensure an adequate balance between the protection of intellectual property on one hand, and the protection of the internet ecosystem on the other.

AIIP reports progress in the form of a government commitment to evaluate the preparation of a whitelist of IP addresses and servers for the root zone of the Domain Name System (DNS) that can not be included in the blocking program. Since this would minimize the risks of erroneously disabling critical systems, AIIP hopes the government will fully implement the proposal....

"Is anyone else seeing this issue with other A/V vendors?" one company customer asked on March 22, in a post titled "Threat alerts from SentinelOne for desktop update initiated from desktop client." The customer was referring to an endpoint malware detection product from security firm SentinelOne. Included in the post were some of SentinelOne's suspicions: the detection of shellcode, code injection to other process memory space, and other trademarks of software exploitation.

The Irish government will pay a heavy price for housing failures "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

As a recent poll showed, Fine Gael lost the room when it ended the eviction ban. In fact, it lost the whole house. It bet the mortgage on private landlords re-entering the market if the eviction ban was lifted.

In reality, private landlords cant exit the market quickly enough when the opportunity comes. There is more money to be made in short-term lets through Airbnb or selling into the swollen property market.

The Government has a fundamental responsibility to provide the public with basic social welfare, healthcare and housing services. Instead, it has abandoned its responsibilities in favour of the private market. That market is fundamentally about maximising returns on investment.

The more scarcity, the better, as prices then rise even more. The market is not there to provide for those who cannot afford to pay those prices. The greater the homelessness, the greater the desperation of those seeking accommodation at any price.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has just drafted a private briefing note for clients advising them to sell their assets prior to the advent of Sinn Fin in Government. The current Government has just made that advice all the more urgent for private landlords.

No amount of hand-wringing will change the reality of what Fine Gael has unleashed upon the people who relied on them most. There is no substitute for actually building more houses. The housing market has been in crisis for many years and yet this Government has been incapable of responding to that crisis.

The interests of existing property owners have been prioritised over the homeless. This is in stark contrast to the national mobilisation achieved in response to the pandemic, when the interests of those most at risk were prioritised over those least likely to suffer severe consequences.

There will be a heavy political price to pay for all of this. The public expects the Government to act for the greater good of the greater number, and it has been let down.

The time for excuses for lack of leadership and delivery on the public housing issue is long gone. The Government must now deliver, or else.

The lack of an emergency plan and national housing agency to free up building land, expedite planning permissions, and increase the capacity of the building industry through public contracts and recruitment and training supports is striking.

Instead, it has been business as usual for the government, which has therefore ended an eviction ban introduced as part of the pandemic emergency response. It could not have been more tone deaf in its timing or announcement, with measures allegedly aimed at alleviating its worst effects not ready and ill thought through.

And this is in spite of 12,000 people being homeless and 80,000 Ukrainian refugees who largely have to make do wit...

Efforts to Reduce Israeli Influence in Africa Continues

In March the South African National Assembly downgraded the status of Tel Avivs diplomatic presence to that of a liaison office.

By Abayomi Azikiwe, Editor, Pan-African News Wire

Wednesday April 12, 2023

Geostrategic Analysis

As the Israeli government intensifies its efforts to win influence on the African continent and other geopolitical regions, several governments have responded by heightening their solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In South Africa, the National Assembly based in Cape Town voted in early March to further downgrade the diplomatic presence of Israel inside the country.

Since 2019 there has been no South African ambassador credentialed to its embassy in Tel Aviv. This measure stems directly from the failure of the Israeli government to negotiate a settlement to end the occupation of Palestine.

In fact, repressive policies against the Palestinians have worsened over the decades with massive bombing campaigns by the Israeli Air Force in Gaza killing thousands and displacing many more from their homes and refugee camps. Every year more Palestinian communities are being taken over by the Israelis through the building of settlements for Jewish households.

United States foreign policy towards Israel has not changed since the formation and recognition of the state 75 years ago. Billions of dollars in direct financial assistance along with trade, military and diplomatic support characterize the relations between Washington and Tel Aviv.

The National Assembly in Cape Town is the highest legislative body in the Republic of South Africa which has nearly 60 million people. South Africas ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), has maintained fraternal relations with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) while endorsing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns domestically and internationally which are geared towards the complete isolation of the racist apartheid regime in Te...

Expelled Black Lawmaker Pearson to Return to Tennessee House

By ADRIAN SAINZ

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The second of two Black Democrats expelled from the Republican-led Tennessee House will return to the Legislature after a Memphis commission voted to reinstate him Wednesday, nearly a week after his banishment for supporting gun control protesters propelled him into the national spotlight.

Hundreds of supporters marched Justin Pearson through Memphis to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners meeting, chanting and cheering before entering the commission chambers, where officials quickly voted 7-0 to restore him to his position.

The message for all the people in Nashville who decided to expel us: You cant expel hope. You cant expel justice, Pearson said at the meeting, his voice rising as he spoke. You cant expel our voice. And you sure cant expel our fight.

The Houses vote last Thursday to remove Pearson and Rep. Justin Jones but keep white Rep. Gloria Johnson drew accusations of racism. Johnson survived by one vote. The Republican leadership denied that race was a factor.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and four other senators sent a letter Wednesday asking the Department of Justice to investigate whether the expulsions violated the Constitution or federal civil rights laws and to take all steps necessary to uphold the democratic integrity of our nations legislative bodies.

After the reinstatement vote, a throng of jubilant supporters greeted Pearson outside in a churchlike celebration. Pearson adopted the cadence of a preacher as he delivered a rousing speech with call-and-response crowd interaction. Accompanied by his fiance, mother and four brothers, Pearson pumped his fist, jumped up and down and hugged relatives.

Theyve awakened a sleeping giant, he said, as a drumbeat and roaring cheers echoed his voice.

Pearson is expected to return to the Capitol in Nashville on Thursday, when the House holds its next floor session, and plan...

DAKAR - The United Nations has urged Mali's junta to "expedite" the process of returning to civilian rule by early 2024 as promised, in a report received Tuesday by AFP.

In the Security Council report, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed concern about persistent violence against civilians and problems implementing a peace agreement between the state and armed groups in the north.

The Security Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday.

Mali has been battling a security and political crisis since jihadist and separatist insurgencies broke out in the north in 2012.

The violence has spread to the centre of the country - and to neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger - and continues to move south.

A UN stabilisation mission, MINUSMA, has been deployed in the Sahel country since 2013.

Since 2020, Mali has been ruled by a military junta, which has bowed to international pressure to return to democracy by March 2024.

In the quarterly report, Guterres noted "progress" made on the democratic transition, citing a draft for a new constitution and a new electoral management authority.

But, he said, "critical activities identified in the electoral timetable" have faced delays.

"With less than a year left before the planned end of the Transition, it behooves the Malian authorities to do all that is in their power to expedite the process, with a view to meeting the agreed deadline for the return to constitutional order," he said.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for massive international support for Somalia on Tuesday during his visit to the East African country, which is facing the worst drought in decades.

During a joint press briefing with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Guterres told reporters he was in Somalia to ring the alarm on the countrys need for massive international support.

He said the nation is dealing with humanitarian difficulties while also combating a serious terrorism threat.

The U.N chief received a red carpet welcome with an honor guard as Somali and U.N. officials greeted him at international airport in the capital, Mogadishu.

Most of the city was locked down for Guterres visit, with public transportation restricted.

Guterres thanked Mohamud for the warm welcome and said he was looking forward later Tuesday to Iftar - the breaking of the Ramadan fast.

Mohamud, in turn, thanked Guterres for demonstrating concern for Somalia.

This visit assures us that the U.N is fully committed to supporting our plans for state-building and stabilizing the country, the president said. We are confident that the Somali people will be able to overcome the problems and challenges they are still facing through the completion of the liberation of the country and reconciliation.

Food security experts say life remains extremely critical for more than 6 million hungry people in Somalias historic drought.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to enhance his nuclear arsenal in more practical and offensive ways as he met with senior military officials to discuss the countrys war preparations in the face of his rivals frantic military exercises, state media said Tuesday.

The meeting of the ruling Workers Partys Central Military Commission on Monday came amid heightened tensions as the pace of both the North Korean weapons demonstrations and the U.S.-South Korean joint military drills have intensified in recent weeks in a cycle of tit-for-tat.

North Koreas official Korean Central News Agency said the commissions members discussed unspecified issues related to strengthening defense capacities and perfecting war preparations to counter the threat posed by the allies drills, which the North portrays as invasion rehearsals.

Kim reviewed the countrys frontline attack plans and various combat documents and stressed the need to bolster his nuclear deterrent with increasing speed on a more practical and offensive manner, KCNA said.

The report did not specify the directions the North intended to take. KCNA also published photos of Kim talking to officials while pointing to certain spots on a blurred map that appeared to be of...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korea launched a ballistic missile that landed in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan on Thursday, prompting Japan to order residents on an island to take shelter as a precaution. The order has been lifted.

South Koreas Joint Chiefs of Staffs said the North Korean missile launched from near the capital Pyongyang flew toward the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The statement described the missile as a weapon with a medium or longer range but didnt say how far the missile flew.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said South Koreas military boosted its surveillance posture and maintains a firm readiness in close coordination with the United States.

Japan said the missile landed in the water but did not immediately give a more exact landing location.

Earlier, the launch had prompted the Japanese government to urge people to seek shelter on the northernmost island of Hokkaido. The government then corrected and retracted its missile alert saying its analysis showed there was no possibility of a missile landing near Hokkaido. Officials in charge of the government crisis management division could not be immediately reached.

Last October, Japan issued a similar evacuation order when a North Korean intermediate-range missile flew over Japan in a launch that demonstrated the potential to reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. At the time, Japanese authorities alerted residents in its northeastern regions to seek shelter and halted trains, although no damages were reported before the weapon landed in the Pacific.

The Sixth Enlarged Meeting of the Eighth Central Military Commission of the Workers Party of Korea which is of another great military significance was held at the office building of the WPK Central Committee on April 10 in the turning period of the development of our armed forces in which the powerful strategic measures are being carried out to expand and strengthen the war deterrent of the country in every way to cope with the escalating moves of the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet traitors to unleash a war of aggression.

Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the WPK, chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, guided the enlarged meeting.

Present at the meeting were major members of the Central Military Commission of the WPK and commanding officers of the large combined units on the front of the Korean Peoples Army.

The meeting clearly understood the serious present security situation in the Korean Peninsula where the aggressive military policy and actions of the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet traitors are emerging as a threatening entity, and discussed important military issues arising in making the countrys defence capacity and war preparations more perfect.

Recently, the enemy openly let out even such warlike words as the occupation of Pyongyang and beheading operation and staged the frantic large-scale joint military drills simulating an all-out war against the DPRK. And they clearly showed their sinister true colours for aggression while making reckless remarks for confrontation with the DPRK and deliberately inciting the military actions for attack.

The meeting made an in-depth analysis of the present situation in which the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet traitors are getting ever more undisguised in their m...

China Says Taiwan Encirclement Erills a Serious Warning

In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, a fighter takes off during the combat readiness patrol and military exercises around the Taiwan Island carried out by the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) from Nanjing in eastern China on April 8, 2023. Recent Chinese air and sea drills simulating an encirclement of Taiwan were intended as a "serious warning" to pro-independence politicians on the self-governing island and their foreign supporters, a Chinese spokesperson said Wednesday, April 12, 2023. (Wang Zixiao/Xinhua via AP)

BEIJING (AP) Recent Chinese air and sea drills simulating an encirclement of Taiwan were intended as a serious warning to pro-independence politicians on the self-governing island and their foreign supporters, China said Wednesday, as signs emerged that Beijing will take further action.

The three days of large-scale air and sea exercises named Joint Sword that ended Monday were a response to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wens meeting with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California last week during a transit visit to the U.S. China had warned of serious consequences if that meeting went ahead.

Although China said the exercises are over, it has kept up military pressure against Taiwan in the past few days and signaled it will do more.

Taiwans Ministry of Transportation said Wednesday it had received a notice from Chinas Civil Aviation Administration that it would set up a control zone to restrict flights in parts of northern Taiwan from April 16-18, in effect setting up an area where flights would not be allowed to go.

On their own, they set up a warning area to control flights within our countrys jurisdictions Taipei Aviation Information Region, using the excuse of aerospace activities, the Taiwan statement said.

Taiwan said it strongly protested the notice and was able to get China to reduce the flight ban time from three days to 27 minutes on the morning of April 16. It is unclear what Ch...

 Editor's Note:

As Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva makes his state visit to China, a trip of potentially huge significance for bilateral cooperation between the two countries, ties between the two nations are brought under the spotlight once again.

Pragmatic cooperation between China and Brazil has made great strides in recent years in the fields of manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, and agriculture, and the development of local currency settlement in cross-border trade, a move toward de-dollarization, has also attracted wide attention.

As Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva embarks on his highly anticipated visit to China, this historic occasion presents a unique opportunity to revive and strengthen the long-standing relationship between the two countries. With both leaders, Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Lula, sharing a people-centered, humanitarian vision for their respective nations and the world, the stage is set for deepening their strategic partnership in international forums, enhancing trade, and working together on poverty reduction and scientific cooperation.

A significant development in the Brazil-China trade relationship is the recent agreement allowing for direct large-scale trade and financial transactions between China and Brazil, Latin America's Chinese yuan to the Brazilian real and vice versa, bypassing the need for the US dollar. This action could lower costs, help small- and medium-sized enterprises to conduct trade without needi...

China, Brazil Deepen Cooperation on Yuan Settlement as the Alternative to US Dollar Aids Cross-border Trade, Investment

Move to help firms to find a more reliable alternative in post-COVID era

China's largest commercial bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), has processed the first cross-border yuan settlement in Brazil at its local branch there, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday, marking another significant step in the yuan's globalization.

The transaction, the first of its kind since China's central bank authorized ICBC as a yuan clearing bank in Brazil in February, was immediately welcomed by Chinese companies and experts.

They told the Global Times on Wednesday that the move paves the way for smoother and deeper trade and investment ties between China and the largest country in Latin America, as the two countries embrace closer ties amid the incoming visit by Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva to China.

Yuan settlements are expected to boost the regional economic and trade recovery in the post-COVID era and help companies to find a more reliable alternative to the US dollar as they seek safer cross-border trade and investment deals, Chinese experts said.

Guo Haiping, honorary president of the General Chamber of Chinese Entrepreneurs in Brazil, told the Global Times on Wednesday that yuan settlement procedure will facilitate bilateral trade and investment and reduce the risks of the volatile US dollar.

"The yuan helps reduce the market risk as well as cut trading costs," Guo said.

As cross-border yuan settlements are taking place, the chamber is planning to promote them among its member companies to facilitate business growth, the Global Times learned.

Henan D.R. Construction Group, a Chinese infrastructure builder, told the Global Times on Wednesday that while it doesn't have projects in Brazil at the moment, the company has great interest in going there.

Of all the positives of bilateral relations, the use of the yuan for settlements with Brazil will accelera...

(AP Photo/Aaron Favila)

MANILA, Philippines (AP) China warned on Wednesday that a deepening security alliance between the United States and the Philippines should not harm its security and territorial interests and interfere in long-simmering territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

When asked to comment on the combat exercises between American and Filipino forces that started on Tuesday in the Philippines, the Chinese Embassy in Manila on Wednesday issued a statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, who said that such drills should not target any third party and should be conducive to regional peace and stability.

Wang did not say how China would respond if it concludes that the U.S.-Philippine security cooperation was hurting Beijings core interests.

In Washington, the U.S. and Philippine defense and foreign secretaries met on Tuesday to discuss the development of nine Philippine military camps, where American forces have been allowed to stay indefinitely under the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

These sites will support combined training exercises and interoperability between our forces to ensure that were even better prepared for future crises, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said. He added the U.S. was allocating more than $100 million to build infrastructure at the sites, wh...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) Leaked U.S. intelligence documents suggesting that Washington spied on South Korea have put the countrys president in a delicate situation ahead of a state visit to the U.S., the first such trip by a South Korean leader in 12 years.

The documents contain purportedly private conversations between senior South Korean officials about Ukraine, indicating that Washington may have conducted surveillance on a key Asian ally even as the two nations publicly vowed to reinforce their alliance.

Since taking office last year, conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol has put a bolstered military partnership with the United States at the heart of his foreign policy to address intensifying North Korean nuclear threats and other challenges. The April 26 summit with President Joe Biden is seen as crucial to winning a stronger U.S. security commitment and resolving grievances over the Biden administrations economic and technology policies.

The leaked documents were posted online as part of a major U.S. intelligence breach. The papers viewed by The Associated Press indicate that South Koreas National Security Council grappled with the U.S. in early March over an American request to provide artillery ammunition to Ukraine.

The documents, which cited a signals intelligence report, said then-NSC Director Kim Sung-han suggested the possibility of selling the 330,000 rounds of 155 mm munitions to Poland, since getting the ammunition to Ukraine quickly was the United States ultimate goal.

Residents Of Delta Community Raise Alarm Over Criminal Activities Of Suspected IPOB Members "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

biafra-Flag 696x456

LAGOS APRIL 12TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Residents of Anwai in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State have raised alarm over rising spate of insecurity in the area.

The residents in a protest to the state Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, alleged that criminal elements suspected to be members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were unleashing terror on them.

The Obi of Anwai, Mohammed Nduka Elunor, who led the protest, disclosed that for fear of being attacked, they now observe the Monday sit-at-home order as directed by IPOB for states in the South-East.

Elunor said the hoodlums have chased away security operatives from the area, noting that the bushy environment, caused by the failure to develop over 100 hectares of land allocated to the Federal Government, has become the hideout for the criminals.

We are having security issues in Anwai. On a daily basis, hoodlums kill our people, between 25 to 30 persons are killed every month.

As we speak, we have been forced to be observing the sit-at-home order in Delta State of all places. Initially, we were resisting them but they started killing our people who dare to come out on Mondays, Elunor said.

Elunor attributed the rise of insecurity to the abandoned expanse of land which the state government acquired from the community and allocated to the federal government for the construction of 700 unit of low cost housing estate.

He said the land transaction was done in 2007, adding that agents of the federal government came in 2012 to demolish the peoples means of livelihood on the ground that they were coming to commence work.

Since then, we have not seen them. And before then, Mile 5 in Anwai was a bubbling spot with the sales of palm wine and bush meat.

Now the place is dormant. The land is overgrown with bushes, making it a safe haven for criminals, he said.

Elunor appealed to the state government to revoke the land allocated to the federal government for failing to develop it with the agreed period of ten years.

He further urged the state government to de-acquire or re-allocate it to those with the commitment to develop the place so as to free the community from the grips...

Number of Australias Fish Species Considered Critically Endangered Doubles "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The amount of critically endangered fish species in Australia has recently doubled after nine species were newly categorized as critically endangered in March. All nine species are part of the galaxias genus, and an additional tenth galaxias species has been labeled as endangered.

The findings present an urgent need to conserve these species. One major problem for these fish is the presence of invasive species, particularly brown and rainbow trout. Invasive fish species can crowd the critically endangered species into smaller portions of their original range or separate populations while also competing for resources.

If we are serious about stopping extinctions, then we need to tackle the major threats that are driving declines of our native animals, James Trezise, conservation director at Australias Invasive Species Council, told The Guardian. Scientists have recommended a threat abatement plan be established for freshwater pest fish, yet this hasnt happened.

The newly listed fish species include short-tail galaxias, tapered galaxias, East Gippsland galaxias and West Gippsland galaxias. Galaxiids, also known as mountain minnows, are often mistaken to be the same species, which can hinder conservation efforts. There are currently more than 40 different species of galaxiids in Australia, with many of them under threat, including the nine species now listed as critically endangered.

The nine species join another nine species for a total of 18 fish species officially recognized as critically endangered in Australia. According to Trezise, the species have greater than a 50% chance of going extinct within just two decades.

Because invasive species force the critically endangered species into small areas, these vulnerable populations are at greater risk from natural disasters, like flooding, drought or wildfires, and inbreeding. Extreme weather events are becoming more of a risk to galaxiids as climate change worsens, warned the Arthur Rylah Institute, which has been involved with galaxiid research and conservation for over 30 years.

Ecuador banned gas flaring over a year ago. Why is it still happening? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

A court in Ecuador ordered oil companies to stop the hazardous practice of burning natural gas at extraction sites because it was a major driver of cancer and other illnesses in nearby communities. But nearly two years have passed since that ruling, and oil companies are burning more natural gas than ever. In September 2021, a provincial court gave oil companies 18 months to eliminate gas flaring in the Amazon, most notably in the provinces of Sucumbos and Orellana, where a lawsuit had been filed by a group of young girls worried about the future of their health. Although that deadline expired at the end of March, oil companies continue to use the flares. The state of Ecuador has failed to comply with the ruling and continues to burn gas, violating the rights of the Amazon, the girls and the country, said Pablo Fajardo, an attorney representing the girls in the lawsuit and the Union of People Affected by Texaco (UDAPT), an advocacy group for victims of oil drilling in the area. Gas flares look like tall columns emitting fire into the air over oil fields. Theyre designed to burn off the excess natural gas produced during oil extraction but also contribute to climate change and pose serious health risks to people who have to breathe it in and drink the water it contaminates. One study conducted by UDAPT and environmental group Clnica Ambiental found 442 cases of cancer between 2018 and 2022 in oil-producing areas of the Amazon likeThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Blood Carbon: How a Kenyan Carbon Offset Project Harms Indigenous Pastoralists and Does Nothing About Climate Change "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

For generations, the Indigenous Samburu, Maasai, Borana and Rendille people of northern Kenya have been grazing cattle and other animals, following the rhythm of the rains and rules passed down from community elders.

But in 2013, a conservation organization run by a white, formerly colonial family thought it could do better. It set up a project to sell carbon offsets based on the idea that replacing the unplanned grazing methods of Kenyas Indigenous communities with a more centralized approach closer to commercial ranching would actually store more carbon in the soil and help offset the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation responsible for the climate crisis. Now, a new report from Survival International backed by Indigenous Kenyans argues that the project is putting pastoralist culture and food security at risk, and likely isnt offsetting emissions either.

We have blown a whistle so the world can hear what they are doing, Abdullahi Hajj Gonjobe of Kenyas Borana people said in a video shared by Survival International. The [international] funds they are sending to this place are destroying us, they are not helping us.

The music and art of Lauryn Hill and Chiwoniso Maraire combined sexiness with political consciousness, offering Black women a way out of rigid categorization.

My first engagements with the music and art of Lauryn Hill and the late Chiwoniso Maraire was as a child in a markedly different Zimbabwe from the one we live in now. Then, the country prided itself on engagement with global arts and culture, as well as local production of the same.

Maraire came first. The feature film More Time, released in 1993, centers around teenage love at the height of the AIDS pandemic. As the film closes, the hip-hop group A Peace of Ebony (of which Maraire was a member) performs a rap song about the dangers of HIV and AIDS.

Some years before, Maraire, alongside Herbert Schwamborn (the German-Zimbabwean also known as Metaphysics) and Tony Chihota (and later another member, Laygwan Sharkie), formed what is generally considered to be Zimbabwes first Afro hip-hop group. According to Schwamborn, the last part of the groups name is an acronym for A Positive Existence Allowing Cultural Expression of Ebony. Their first recorded album, From the Native Tongue, was released in 1992 with Keith Farquharsonknown for his work with a variety of musical outfits from Zimbabwe and South Africa, including the late Oliver Mtukudzi, Andy Brown (Maraires late former husband), and Freshlygroundcontributing much of the music and production.

In 1994, A Peace of Ebony won an award in the Radio France International Discovery contest for Best New Group out of Southern Africa. Their entry, in line with their general aesthetic, had been a song titled Vadzimu (the title refers to a Shona term for ancestors), which they performed in Shona, English, and French, and which featured an mbira-infused hip hop sound.

My first interaction with African American artist Lauryn Hill was through a similar genre-bending hip hop group, The Fugees. Hill had met one of her band members, Pras Michel, in high school. He would go on to introduce her to Wyclef Jean, the groups other member. The groups name is shortened from Refugees, reflecting the politics of the heritage of Pras and Wyclef who are both of Haitian descent. In 1996, The Fugees released their famed magnum opus, The Score, which featured, among other hits, a cover of Roberta Flacks hit Killing Me...
