The unprecedented package will help fund a new detention centre near Dunkirk, more drones and an extra 500 police officers to prevent migrants making the dangerous journey across the English Channel.
Das klingt fr mich wie der Deal zwischen der EU und Nordafrika / der Trkei. Das funktioniert ja auch super und hat kaum negative Nebenwirkungen.

Damit ihr mal seht, mit was fr Zahlen die da arbeiten:

More than 40,000 migrants arrived in the UK on small boats last year and the home secretary Suella Braverman has suggested this years figure could be twice that.
VIERZIG TAUSEND!!!!

Under the new program, banks and other lenders will be able to pledge Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities for cash. Banks can pledge collateral at par, or face value, rather than marking the assets to their current market value.

Oha! US-Regierung schliet Rettung von Silicon Valley ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Oha!

SVB was the 16th-largest bank in the United States at the time of its failure on March 10, 2023, and was the largest bank by deposits in Silicon Valley.

Biden's Chip War With China Is an Imperial Struggle for High-Tech Supremacy "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

The rivalry between the U.S. and China has hit fever pitch. Despite their deep economic integration and record trade in goods of $690 billion in 2022, the two powers are at loggerheads over everything from military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific to Russia's imperialist invasion of Ukraine, to trade and investment in the Global South. The U.S., of course, remains the world's dominant imperialist power, but now China poses a threat to its hegemony. At the center of this conflict are microchips, which are as important to global capitalism today as oil. Washington put its high-tech weaponry on full display in the 1991 Gulf War. Triumphant, Washington adopted a new imperial strategy of superintending the world economy by incorporating states into a neoliberal world order of free trade globalization. The U.S. used the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization and UN to enforce this order. The U.S. retained its lead in the design of chips, but increasingly fabrication was done by [Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company] in Taiwan. The Trump administration ... targeted Beijing's tech industry. Using national security as justification, the Commerce Department prohibited U.S. companies from selling chips, hardware and software to the company. The Biden administration doubled down on Trump's strategy of great power rivalry. [Author Chris] Miller argues, "Taiwan isn't simply the source of the advanced chips that both countries' militaries are betting on. It's also the most likely battleground."

Where Is Occupy Silicon Valley? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Craig Pirrong | Brownstone Institute | March 13, 2023

Bank failures tend to come in waves, and we are experiencing at least a mini-wave now.

Banks fail for three basic reasons: 1. Credit transformation: deterioration in borrower creditworthiness, usually due to an adverse economic shock (e.g., a real estate bust). 2. Maturity transformation: borrowing short, lending long, and then getting hammered when interest rates rise. 3. Liquidity transformation combined with an exogenous liquidity shock, a la Diamond-Dybvig, where idiosyncratic depositor needs for cash lead to withdrawals that exceed liquid assets and therefore trigger fire sales of illiquid assets.

The two most notable failures of lateSilicon Valley Bank and Silvergateare examples of 2 and 3 respectively.

In some respects, SVB is the most astounding. Not because a bank failed in the old-fashioned way, but because it was funded primarily by the deposits of supposed financial sophisticatesand because of the disgusting policy response of the Treasury and the Fed.

SVB took in oodles of cash, especially in the past couple of years. The cashcade was so immense that SVB could not find enough traditional banking business (loans) to soak it up, so they bought lots of Treasuries. And long duration Treasuries to boot.

And then Powell and the Fed applied the boot, jacking up rates. Bonds have cratered in the last year, and took SVBs balance sheet with it.

Again, an old story. And hardly a harbinger of systemic riskunless such reckless maturity mismatches are systemic.

SVB was the Banker to the Silicon Valley Stars, notably VCs and tech firms. These firms are the ones that deposited immense sums in exchange for a pittance of return. Case in point, Roku, put almost $500 millionyes, you read that right, 9 figures led with a 5into SVB!!!

I mean: what the eff? Was the Treasurer a moron? For who other than a moron would hold that much in cash in a single institution? (Roku claims its devices make your home a smarter. Maybe they should have hired a smarter treasurer and CFO, or replaced them with one of its devices). Hell, why is a company holding that much in cash period?

A few of these alleged masters of the universe (like Palantir) saw the writing on the wall and yanked their deposits: deposits fell by a quarter on Friday alone, sealing the banks doom. Those who were slow to run howled to the high heavens over the weekend that if there was not a bailout there would be a holocaust in the tech sector.

Even though the systemic risk posed by SVBs failure is nil (or if not, then every bank is systemically important), the Treasury Department and the Fed responded to these howls and guaranteed all the depositseven thoug...

So many people I know get very defensive when I discuss the plandemic machinations. They either can not accept that manipulation is the standard operating procedure for those in charge or that they would ever be gullible enough to be tricked on a regular basis.

Upon starting work in the U.S., Gruen was responsible for something that came to be known as the Gruen Transfer (or Gruen Effect). As he aimed to re-create environments from his youth, he ended up inspiring a very insidious reality.

'Strange metals' operate outside normal rules of electricity "IndyWatch Feed World"

UC physicist explores mysteries of strange metals. International team finds unusual electrical behavior in experiments. Physicists at the University of Cincinnati are learning more about the bizarre behavior of "strange metals," which operate outside the normal rules of electricity. Theoretical physicist Yashar Komijani, an assistant professor in UC's College of Arts and Sciences, contributed to an international experiment using a strange metal made from an alloy of ytterbium, a rare earth metal. Physicists in a lab in Hyogo, Japan, fired radioactive gamma rays at the strange metal to observe its unusual electrical behavior. Led by Hisao Kobayashi with the University of Hyogo and RIKEN, the study was published in the journal Science. The experiment revealed unusual fluctuations in the strange metal's electrical charge. "The idea is that in a metal, you have a sea of electrons moving in the background on a lattice of ions," Komijani said. "But a marvelous thing happens with quantum...

DUP panel could do worse than seek defend NIs place in the UK from a point of view of economic strength "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

As we wait for the DUP to decide on the Windsor Framework, and Rishi Sunak runs off with the sword of Damocles to cut the rights of creature who has the misfortune to be caught as they wash up on Englands southern shore, heres Graham Gudgeon:

Some unionists may insist that Northern Ireland be treated identically with GB, but the fact is that this has never been the case. NI had devolved government more than half a century before Scotland and Wales and for the last quarter century has had an almost unique form of involuntary coalition government which has proved inoperable for over a third of its existence. Northern Ireland was established in 1921 with too large a territory, incorporating too many Irish nationalists, and has proved close to ungovernable for significant parts of its history.  It is to the credit of the UK that it has survived as part of the UK for a century and is likely to continue to do so indefinitely. The recent ARINS poll found that a lower proportion of Catholics in the North (40%) favoured Irish unity than Catholics in the South. For many Northern Catholics, British rule has proved a positive experience.

Brexit and Protocol can be viewed as just another turn of the screw in the difficult task of managing the unstable polity that is Northern Ireland. In this case, the UK has badly mismanaged the consequences of Brexit in Ireland, but has had to face the reality that the EU is a major economic power with initially antagonistic intent. The UK should have persisted with proposals for the fully electronic border which the EUs own advisors and even Irish customs officials agreed was possible. More recently the idea of mutual enforcement, with each jurisdiction having legally-based export controls, should have been pushed harder. The reasons for not pursuing these alternatives has been a fear of the consequences for trade and cooperation with the EU. There is little point in opponents of the protocol focussing solely on its local consequences without a consideration of the potential consequences for GB of a failure to reach an agreement with the EU.

Indeed. His conclusion

The reality now is that British public opinion wants the Protocol issue put to bed and believes that Sunak has achieved this. They welcome a normalisation of relations with the EU and even if this amounts to little in practice, they appreciate a warmer tone. An alliance between the DUP and the ERG exercised real influence as long as a Tory government remained in power, but key members of the ERG have accepted the WF, and DUP influence has thus waned.

The DUP are not now in a position to prevent the WF from being implemented and even if they were, the EU could sit and wait for a Labour Government to implement the arrangements. One advantage of a settlement on the Protocol is...

SSD Reliability is Only Slightly Better Than HDD, Backblaze Says "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

SSD Reliability is Only Slightly Better Than HDD, Backblaze Says

A surprising outcome for the first SSD-based AFR report:

Backblaze is a California-based company dealing with cloud storage and data backup services. Every year, the organization provides some interesting reliability data about the large fleet of storage units employed in its five data centers around the world.

For the first time, Backblaze's latest report on storage drive reliability is focusing on Solid State Drives (SSD) rather than HDD units alone. The company started using SSDs in the fourth quarter of 2018, employing the NAND Flash-based units as boot drives rather than data-storing drives. Backblaze uses consumer-grade drives, providing Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) information about 13 different models from five different manufacturers.

The 2022 Drive States review is based on data recorded from 2,906 SSD boot units, Backblaze states, and it is essentially confirming what the company was saying in its 2022 mid-year report. SSDs are more reliable than HDDs, Backblaze says, as they show a lower AFR rate (0.98%) compared to HDDs (1.64%).

The fact that the difference in reliability level isn't exactly staggering (0.66% AFR) is rather surprising, however, as SSDs are essentially just moving electrons through memory chips while hard drives have to deal with a complex (and failure-prone) mechanism employing spinning platters and extremely sensitive read/write magnetic heads.

The reasons behind failing drives aren't known, as only an SSD manufacturer would have the equipment needed to make a reliable diagnose. For 2022, Backblaze says that seven of the 13 drive models had no failure at all. Six of those seven models had a limited number of "drive days" (less than 10,000), the company concedes, meaning that there is not enough data to make a reliable projection about their failure rates.

An interesting tidbit about Backblaze's report is that the company hasn't used a single SSD unit made by Samsung, which is a major player in the SSD consumer market. One possible explanation is that Samsung drives aren't cheap, and Backblaze is essentially using the cheapest drives they can buy in bulk quantities.

PCIe For Hackers: The Diffpair Prelude "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

PCIe, also known as PCI-Express, is a highly powerful interface. So lets see what it takes to hack on something that powerful. PCIe is be a bit intimidating at first, however it is reasonably simple to start building PCIe stuff, and the interface is quite resilient for hobbyist-level technology. There will come a time when we want to use a PCIe chip in our designs, or perhaps, make use of the PCIe connection available on a certain Compute Module, and its good to make sure that were ready for that.

PCIe is everywhere now. Every modern computer has a bunch of PCIe devices performing crucial functions, and even iPhones use PCIe internally to connect the CPU with the flash and WiFi chips. You can get all kinds of PCIe devices: Ethernet controllers, high-throughput WiFi cards, graphics, and all the cheap NVMe drives that gladly provide you with heaps of storage when connected over PCIe. If youre hacking on a laptop or a single-board computer and youd like to add a PCIe device, you can get some PCIe from one of the PCIe-carrying sockets, or just tap into an existing PCIe link if theres no socket to connect to. Its been two decades since weve started getting PCIe devices now, PCIe is on its 5.0 revision, and its clear that its here to stay.

Link "IndyWatch Feed World"

Today, Lee Camp, the host of Behind the Headlines, speaks with two journalists, Taya Graham and Stephen Janis, about their ongoing show, The Police Accountability Report. Running for four years, the show is focused on shining a light on police misdeeds. Although based in Baltimore, it covers law enforcement abuse across the country. The journalists, who between them have been covering the subject for two decades, share their experiences reporting on police brutality, corruption, and the need for police reform.

Despite the lack of coverage in the corporate press, Taya notes that there is a whole subculture of cop watchers and auditors who film the police and test their first amendment rights in a public space. She grew up in Baltimore, a majority-black city, and was no stranger to police brutality. However, in her younger days, she assumed it was largely a local problem. Yet as they expanded their coverage, it became clear that this is a systemic issue across the entire United States.

Stephen adds that police corruption is a reflection of the values of the community it serves. He believes that policing only reflects the people who have the power, money, and capital to impose it on underprivileged communities. He says that when they talk about police corruption, they are really talking about the corruption of inequality in a community desiring to police itself. Stephen believes that the underlying conditions in the community the police serve do not change, and that is why police brutality is prevalent across the country.

The interview sheds light on the ongoing problem of police abuse and the need for police reform. Taya and Stephens show, The Police Accountability Report, is an important step towards taking law enforcement to task for their actions. The lack of interest from the likes of Fox News and CNN in truly scrutinizing the power of the police means Stephen and Tayas work is all the more important.

Oceanic Surprise: Pushing Europas Ice "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Oceanic Surprise: Pushing Europas Ice

Getting Europa Clipper to its target to analyze the surface of Jupiters most interesting moon (in terms of possible life, at least) sets up a whole range of comparative studies. We have been mining data for many years from the Galileo mission and will soon be able at last! to compare its results to new images pulled in by Europa Clippers flybys. Out of this comes an interesting question recently addressed by a new paper in JGR Planets: Is Europas ice shell changing in position with time?

An answer here would establish whether we are dealing with a free-floating shell moving at a different rate than the salty ocean beneath. Computer modeling has previously suggested that the oceans effects on the shell may affect its movement, but this is evidently the first study that calculates the amount of drag involved in this scenario. Ocean flow may explain surface features Galileo revealed, with ridges and cracks as evidence of the stretching and straining effects of currents below.

Hamish Hay (University of Oxford) is lead author of the paper on this work, which was performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory during his postdoctoral tenure there. The study reveals a net torque on the ice shell from ocean currents moving as alternating east-west jets, sometimes spinning up the shell and at other times spinning it down as convection is altered by the evolution of the moons interior. Says Hay:

Before this, it was known through laboratory experiments and modeling that heating and cooling of Europas ocean may drive currents. Now our results highlight a coupling between the ocean and the rotation of the icy shell that was never previously considered.

Thus we are forced to reconsider some old assumptions, one of them being that the primary force acting on Europas surface is the gravitational pull of Jupiter. The paper calculates that an average jet speed of at least ~1 cm s-1 produces enough ice-ocean torque to be comparable to tidal torque. Calling these results a huge surprise, Europa Clipper project scientist Robert Pappalardo (JPL) notes that thinking about ocean circulation as the driver of surface cracks and ridges takes scientists in a new direction: [G]eologists dont usually think, Maybe its the ocean doing that.

Silicon Valley Bank crisis: The liquidity crunch we predicted has now begun and the FED is largely to blame "IndyWatch Feed World"

There has been an avalanche of information and numerous theories circulating the past few days about the fate of a bank in California know as SVB (Silicon Valley Bank). SVB was the 16th largest bank in the US until it abruptly failed and went into insolvency on March 10th. The impetus for the collapse of the bank is tied to a $2 billion liquidity loss on bond sales which caused the institution's stock value to plummet over 60%, triggering a bank run by customers fearful of losing some or most of their deposits. There are many fine articles out there covering the details of the SVB situation, but what I want to talk about more is the root of it all. The bank's shortfalls are not really the cause of the crisis, they are a symptom of a wider liquidity drought that I predicted here at Alt-Market months ago, including the timing of the event. First, though, let's discuss the core issue, which is fiscal tightening and the Federal Reserve. In my article 'The Fed's Catch-22 Taper Is A...

Russias hypersonic response to latest NATO and Kiev regime escalation "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

By Drago Bosnic March 14, 2023

In the last several days, multiple sources have published information regarding the Kiev regimes usage of a number of NATO weapons and munitions, including the JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bombs. JDAMs are standard unguided freefall/gravity bombs (so-called dumb bombs) equipped with a guidance kit that converts them into all-weather PGMs (precision-guided munitions). Guided by an integrated inertial guidance system combined with a GPS receiver, JDAMs have a declared range of up to 30 km, although this has been extended with newer versions, such as the JDAM-ER (up to 70 km). Precisely this type was given to the Neo-Nazi junta in recent weeks, according to the US Air Force Europe (USAFE) command.

According to The War Zone, USAF General James Hecker, head of USAFE, as well as NATOs Allied Air Command and US Air Forces Africa (AFAFRICA), confirmed this during last weeks media roundtable.

Recently, weve just gotten some precision munitions [to Ukraine] that had some extended range and go a little bit further than the gravity drop bomb and has precision [guidance], Hecker said, adding: Thats a recent capability that we were able to give them probably in the last three weeks.

The exact type of the JDAM-ER provided to the Kiev regime is not entirely clear, although General Hecker himself used the designation GBU-62. The original weapon is used exclusively in naval warfare, but this one seems to have been modified for use against ground targets. And while its not entirely clear what platform the Neo-Nazi junta forces are using to deploy these weapons, General Hecker hinted that they were most likely integrated on existing Soviet-era jets in the same way as the US-made AGM-88 HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missiles). Since last year, HARMs have been used by the Kiev regime forces MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets to target Russian air defenses. Its very likely that this is the case, although its not impossible that the Su-24 and even Su-25 jets could be used for this purpose.

Local sources have reported the use of JDAMs on March 10, specifically in the vicinity of Bakhmut (Artyomovsk). It should be noted that such weapons require extensive ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) assets, which the Kiev regime simply doesnt have. This only leaves NATO as the side directly providing targeting data. And while this is nothing new,...

Controversy over claims of room temperature superconductors "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Superconductivity is the phenomenon where the resistance to current flow in a material drops to zero. This means that there will be no loss of energy due to heat generation when current flows through the superconductor. Since resistive heat losses are one of the main limitations associated with any current-generated devices, superconductors open up enormous possibilities for technology that could revolutionize our lives. Unfortunately this phenomenon, first discovered by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911, only seemed to work at extremely low temperatures close to absolute zero that required cooling with liquid helium, making it impractical for everyday use.

Creating materials that would be superconducting at room temperatures became the Holy Grail of this area of research and a big breakthrough came in 1986 when materials were found that were superconducting at around 90K (-183C) which could be reached using liquid nitrogen. Even higher temperature superconducting materials at about 203K (-77C) have been found but that required enormous pressures, of about 106 times atmospheric pressure.

Recent papers by a research team headed by Ranga Dias and Ahskan Salamat at the University of Rochester have claimed that they have found materials that are superconducting at temperature of 294K (17C) and at a pressure of 10 kbar or ten times atmospheric pressure. This is big news.

This article explains what was found.

The only superconducting materials previously discovered require extreme conditions to function, which makes them impractical for many real-world applications. The first known superconductors had to be cooled with liquid helium to temperatures only a few degrees above absolute zero. In the 1980s researchers found superconductivity in a category of materials called cuprates, which work at higher temperatures yet still require cooling with liquid nitrogen. Since 2015 scientists have measured room-temperature superconductive behavior in hydrogen-rich materials called hydrides. but they have to be pressed in a sophisticated viselike instrument called a diamond anvil cell until they reach a pressure of about a quarter to half of that found near the center of Earth.

The new material, called nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride, is a blend of hydrogen, the rare-earth metal lutetium and nitrogen. Although this material also relies on a diamond anvil cell, the study found that it begins exhibiting superconductive behavior at a pressure of about 10,000 atmospheresroughly 100 times lower than the pressures that other hydrides require. The new material is much closer to ambient pressure than previous materials, says David Ceperley, a condensed matter physicist at University of Ill...

Homes in Flood Zones Are Overvalued By Billions, Study Finds "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Failure to account for climate change means low-income homeowners could see their home values plunge.

By Zoya Teirstein

American homes in flood zones are overvalued by hundreds of billions of dollars, according to a study published in February in the journal Nature Climate Change. Low-income homeowners in states controlled by Republicans are especially at risk of seeing their home values deflate as global warming accelerates.

Flooding is a costly and deadly natural hazard across the United States. For decades, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offered flood insurance at discounted rates, incentivizing developers to build houses in flood-prone areas. The agencys flood maps are also notoriously outdated. That has led to a dangerous situation for homeowners as they grapple with year after year of debilitating floods.

The study, published by a group of academic, nonprofit, and government organizations that include the Environmental Defense Fund and the Federal Reserve, revealed that homes in flood zones are overvalued by as much as $237 billion.

The researchers found that coastal property owners and homeowners in states that have inadequate or nonexistent flood disclosure laws, such as Florida, where there are no disclosure laws and homes are overvalued by $50 billion, were particularly vulnerable to overvaluation. They also found that a large share of overvalued homes are in areas that FEMA says arent currently at significant risk of flooding, a signal that flood maps need updating. The studys authors told Grist that states need to gauge and clearly communicate flood risk to homeowners regardless of whether their home is located in one of the agencys special flood hazard areas, where flood insurance is mandatory for most mortgages.

According to the study, low-income homeowners could see up to 10 percent of their market value disappear in coming years, a blow for those least able to withstand one. What we find is that lower-income households are more exposed to risk of price deflation in the housing market, Jesse Gourevitch, a fellow at the Environmental Defense Fund and a co-author of the study, told Grist. If that bubble were to burst those households could be at risk of losing home equity.

The fallout from climate-fueled flood risk extends beyond individual homeowners to their larger communities. The study showed that cities in no...

An AI Learned to Play Atari 6,000 Times Faster "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We dont learn by brute force repetition. AI shouldnt either.

Despite impressive progress, todays AI models are very inefficient learners, taking huge amounts of time and data to solve problems humans pick up almost instantaneously. A new approach could drastically speed things up by getting AI to read instruction manuals before attempting a challenge.

One of the most promising approaches to creating AI that can solve a diverse range of problems is reinforcement learning, which involves setting a goal and rewarding the AI for taking actions that work towards that goal. This is the approach behind most of the major breakthroughs in game-playing AI, such as DeepMinds AlphaGo.

As powerful as the technique is, it essentially relies on trial and error to find an effective strategy. This means these algorithms can spend the equivalent of several years blundering through video and board games until they hit on a winning formula.

Why would Tim White and UC Berkeley hoard old bones? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I organize spiders better than this

Berkeley has a bit of an unsavory reputation as the premiere grave-robbing institution in the US. Theyve got an impressive collection of looted remains.

More than three decades ago, Congress ordered museums, universities and government agencies that receive federal funding to publicly report any human remains in their collections that they believed to be Native American and then return them to tribal nations.

UC Berkeley has been slow to do so. The university estimates that it still holds the remains of 9,000 Indigenous people in the campus Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology more than any other U.S. institution bound by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA, according to a ProPublica analysis of federal data.

Tim White, the esteemed anthropologist, was in charge of repatriation decisions for many years, and basically stonewalled the process.

White said the collection did not need to be reported under NAGPRA because there is no way to determine the origin of the bones and therefore the law does not apply.

The collection has exposed deep rifts at UC Berkeley, pitting a prominent professor who said hes done nothing wrong against university administrators who have apologized to tribes for not sharing information about the remains sooner.

Im looking at this as someone who is sympathetic to both educational and research needs, and I have to ask: why do you want these old bones anyway, Berkeley? Theyre used to teach anthropology students, and I can understand why you want variations represented one old mounted skeleton is not enough but why do you need thousands of specimens for teaching the basics, and why do you need Native American skeletons shoveled out of their graves by the thousands? This makes no sense. Its more like maintaining a dragons hoard then an actual, useful teaching collection. Thats especially clear when the collection is described.

By then, the teaching collection that anthropology professors used had grown to thousands of bones and teeth that White said in his report to university administrators had been commingled with others donated by amateur gravediggers, dentists, anatomists, physicians, law enforcement and biological supply companies.

The remains were unceremoniously sorted by body part...

The Urbanity of Evil: 20 Years After the Invasion of Iraq "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Norman Solomon, World BEYOND War, March 14, 2023

Vast quantities of lies from top U.S. government officials led up to the Iraq invasion. Now, marking its 20th anniversary, the same media outlets that eagerly boosted those lies are offering retrospectives. Dont expect them to shed light on the most difficult truths, including their own complicity in pushing for war.

What propelled the United States to start the war on Iraq in March 2003 were dynamics of media and politics that are still very much with us today.

Soon after 9/11, one of the rhetorical whips brandished by President George W. Bush was an unequivocal assertion while speaking to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 20, 2001: Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. Thrown down, that gauntlet received adulation and scant criticism in the United States. Mainstream media and members of Congress were almost all enthralled with a Manichean worldview that has evolved and persisted.

Cultural heritage is an essential resource for climate change science, reports say "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Many of the people archaeologist Dulma Karunarathna interviews in rural Sri Lanka have never been interviewed before. And many of them, representing a variety of religions and languages, tell her of the mee tree (Madhuca longifolia). The trees roots balance water levels and share underground nutrients with rice fields. Its flowers, seeds and bark can be used to treat surface wounds, and its leaves provides shade for farmers watch huts to avoid wild animals at night while they exchange call-and-response pel kavi songs across their fields. But most importantly, its nectar attracts bats, which deposit their droppings across the rice fields. For locals, the trees offer a cheap alternative or supplement to nitrogen synthetic fertilizers and improve their resilience to disaster. For this reason, the mee tree is often called the fertilizer tree. Many of Karunarathnas interviewees are elderly, and some face a worrying epidemic of unidentified kidney disease that some researchers link with agrochemicals and heavy metals in drinking water. After an Indigenous doctor who she interviewed died recently, Karunarathna was in shock. That was his first and last interview, she tells Mongabay. An Indigenous man in Peru. Image by Rhett A. Odesa and World Heritage Politics "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage  (The World Heritage Convention) entered into force in 1975. The world heritage regime, in effect, produces the shared heritage of humanity. States use their right, as set by the Convention, to nominate sites within their borders; the files accompanying the nomination make the case for the sites outstanding universal value. The relevant Advisory Bodyfor cultural heritage sites, the International Council of Museums and Sites (ICOMOS) evaluates the site and its file. The intergovernmental World Heritage Committee, composed of twenty-one rotating members, discusses the site, the file, and the ICOMOS recommendation during its annual meeting; it makes the final decision on additions to the World Heritage List.

The Convention requires the World Heritage Committee to meet annually to take the regimes implementing decisions. The Russian Federation was supposed to host last years meeting during June. But Russias war on Ukraine led to strong pressures for a change in location; in the end, the session was indefinitely postponed.

In October 2022, Ukrainian President Zelensky officially nominated the Historic Centre of Odesa for inscription on the World Heritage List. He did so under the emergency procedure for sites facing immediate danger. Thus, if the nomination succeeded Odesa would also be placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger, which designates sites for which major operations are necessary and for which assistance has been requested under the Convention.

To fulfill its obligations under the Convention, the Committee held an extraordinary session at UNESCOs Paris headquarters in December 2022. During this meeting, the Committee decided to convene a second extraordinary session in January 2023.

The agenda for the January 2023 meeting had three substantive items; the third item read any other matter. Italy, Belgium, Japan, Greece and Bulgaria advanced Odesas nomination by placing the evaluation of nominations to be processed on an emergency basis under that third item.

The Russian Federation responded with a series of procedural moves aimed at preventing the nomination from moving forward. The debate grew heated enough for the Saudi Arabian chair of the meeting to make m...

Blood Does Not Wash Away Blood "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Kathy Kelly, World BEYOND War, March 14, 2023

The extraordinary March 10, 2023 announcement that Chinas top diplomat, Mr. Wang Yi, helped broker a rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran suggests that major powers can benefit from believing that, as Albert Camus once put it, words are more powerful than munitions.

This concept was also acknowledged by General Mark Milley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff who said on January 20th, 2023, that he believes Russias war in Ukraine will conclude with negotiations rather than on the battlefield. In November of 2022, asked about prospects for diplomacy in Ukraine, Milley noted that the early refusal to negotiate in World War One compounded human suffering and led to millions more casualties.

So when theres an opportunity to negotiate, when peace can be achieved seize the moment, Milley told the Economic Club of New York.

Twenty years ago, in Baghdad, I shared quarters with Iraqis and internationals in a small hotel, the Al-Fanar, which had been home base for numerous Voices in the Wilderness delegations acting in open defiance of the economic sanctions against Iraq. U.S. government officials charged us as criminals for delivering medicines to Iraqi hospitals. In response, we told them we understood the penalties they threatened us with (twelve years in prison and a $1 million fine), but we couldnt be governed by unjust laws primarily punishing children. Todays weather forecast "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Enjoy this.

Susan Hassol and Michael Mann say, Enjoy the weather. Worry about the climate.. No. I refuse to enjoy this weather. Warm in Minnesota means hovering around freezing, and weve got deep piles of snow everywhere, and another storm on the way thatll dump more snow on us. Im not looking forward to what other parts of the country call Spring, because for us itll be the time everything melts producing seas of mud and slush, with sheets of ice lurking underneath. Theres nothing enjoyable about this season.

Its going to get worse before it gets better is my feeling.

This week sees a meteorological battleground setting up across the continental U.S., pitting a massive winter storm from the West against far-too-early Spring heat in the East. This major winter storm is dumping heavy snow and ice across the northern U.S. from the West Coast to the Northeast. Widespread very strong, gusty winds are expected across the West and High Plains while heavy rain with the potential for flash floods and severe weather are predicted for the Midwest and Plains. Meanwhile, historic heat is building across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic states, with record-breaking February temperatures soaring into the 80s. Almost the entire country is experiencing some form of extreme weather this week.

Its miserable here in the upper Midwest, so dont try to tell me to enjoy the weather, which has been nothing but bad news all winter long. Maybe theres good news about the climate?

The good news is that clean energy and other climate solutions are abundant and available. Although there is much work that remains to be done, recent U.S. legislation makes it increasingly profitable to tap into natural flows of renewable energy, such as from the sun and the wind, and to use that clean electricity to power our buildings, transportation and more. We do not have to simply accept an ever-worsening torrent of tempestuous weather. We can act with urgency to rein in the climate emergency and remake our civilization into one that respects the gift of a stable climate we inherited one that we can pass on to our children.

What, thats the good news? We can hope that the US government acts with urgency to switch to clean renewable energy sources? Right. Or we can pray that a host of fairies shows up with magic w...

The Lebanese lira has plummeted to a new historic low, trading at 100,000 against the US dollar on the black market.

While the currency is still officially pegged at 15,000 liras to the dollar by Lebanons central bank, private dealers reported a new record low in the shadow economy on Tuesday.

This means that Lebanons largest bill in circulation is worth just $1, a staggering decline from $66 before the financial crisis hit in 2019 when the lira was traded at 1,507 to the dollar.

The Lebanese currency is the worst performing in the world this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Lebanese banks have imposed strict restrictions on withdrawals for several months, leading to public outrage and even armed raids by depositors.

Advanced actor targets Fortinet FortiOS in attacks on govt entities "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

An unknown threat actor is targeting Government entities and large organizations by exploiting a security flaw in Fortinet FortiOS.

Fortinet researchers are warning of an advanced threat actor and is targeting governmental or government-related entities.

The unknown threat actor is exploiting a vulnerability in Fortinet FortiOS software, tracked as CVE-2022-41328, that may allow a privileged attacker to read and write arbitrary files via crafted CLI commands.

The CVE-2022-41328 vulnerability (CVSS score: 6.5) is a path traversal issue in FortiOS can can result in arbitrary code execution.

A improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory vulnerability (path traversal) [CWE-22] in FortiOS may allow a privileged attacker to read and write arbitrary files via crafted CLI commands. reads the advisory published by Fortinet.

The vulnerability impacts FortiOS versions 6.0, 6.2, 6.4.0 through 6.4.11, 7.0.0 through 7.0.9, and 7.2.0 through 7.2.3. The company addressed the vulnerability with the release of versions 6.4.12, 7.0.10, and 7.2.4 respectively.

Fortinet launched an investigation into the attacks after the FortiGate devices of one customer suddenly halted and failed to reboot. The devices halted displaying the following error message:

System enters error-mode due to FIPS error: Firmware Integrity self-test failed

The failure of the integrity test blocks the re-boot of the device to protect the integrity of the network.

The researchers discovered that the attackers modified the /sbin/init folder in the firmware image, they noticed the presence of a new file /bin/fgfm. The modification aims at providing a persistent access to the attacker.

The modification to /sbin/init ensures that /bin/fgfm, which may provide an attacker with persistent access and control, runs before proceeding with regular boot-up actions. reads the analysis published by Fortinet.

Upon executing the fgfm malware, it contacts a remote server (C2) and awaits for commands to execute.

The malicious code can perform various actions depending on the commands it receives from the C&C server, including exit program, exfiltrate data, download/write files, establish a remote shell.

The security firm pointed out that the exploit requires a deep understanding of FortiOS and the underlying hardware, a circumstance that suggests t...

China has accused the US of abusing a United Nations event to mark an international day against Islamophobia after the American ambassador in New York used it to draw attention to Beijings persecution of its Uyghur minority.

In a special event at the General Assembly on Friday, the Chinese ambassador to the UN also accused the US of seeking to sow discord between China and Muslim nations.

The event was being held ahead of the first International Day to Combat Islamophobia on Wednesday, which the General Assembly last year voted to observe annually on 15 March, the anniversary of the 2019 attack on two mosques in New Zealand which left 51 people dead.

True Story About Human and Elephant Friendship Wins Historic Oscar "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Amidst the glitz and glamor of the Oscars Sunday night came a surprisingly earnest reminder of the importance of protecting the natural world and Indigenous rights.

This reminder came when The Elephant Whisperers, a moving true story about the relationship between an Indigenous Indian couple and two orphaned elephants, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short.

I stand here today to speak for the sacred bond between us and our natural world, for the respect of Indigenous communities and empathy towards other living beings we share space with and finally, coexistence, the films director Kartiki Gonsalves said as she accepted the award.

The film, which marks Gonsalvess directorial debut, tells the story of what happened when a family from the Tamil Nadus Mudumalai Tiger Reserve adopted two orphaned Asian elephants, according to The Indian Express. However, while the film is a career first for Gonsalves, her love of the natural world was instilled in her from a young age.

My family explored streams and beaches, natural history museums and aquariums. My parents would bundle us up my sister and I and would take us out to state parks and camping sites, she told NPR.

How We Navigate Through Crowds "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Our brain has its own GPS and it helps us navigate by detecting the movements of the people around us:

Whether you are making your way through a crowded pedestrian zone or striving towards the goal in a team game, in both situations it is important to think not only about your own movements but also those of others. These navigation and orientation processes are carried out by brain cells that register our current position, where we are coming from, where we are moving towards and in which direction we are looking. Through their joint activity, they create a "map" of our surroundings. A special type of these cells are the so-called grid cells in the entorhinal cortex, a small brain region in the middle temporal lobe. They function like the brain's own GPS, because they not only represent our position in space, but can also put it in relation to other points in the same space.

[...] They found that the brain activity recorded while watching others was comparable to the activity of grid cells. In addition, the team was able to show that this activity was part of a larger network of brain regions that are associated with navigation processes. Interestingly, however, it turned out that the better a subject was at following the path of others, the less active this network was. "We interpret this as greater efficiency of the grid cells, which might make it less necessary to engage the larger brain network," Wagner explains.

The results of the study thus suggest that grid cells belong to a larger network of brain regions that, among other aspects, coordinates navigation processes. However, this network is particularly affected by ageing processes and especially by dementia. Wagner explains: "The function of grid cells decreases with age and dementia. As a result, people can no longer find their way around and their orientation is impaired." The group's further research is now dedicated to the question of whether grid cells are also involved in recognising other people - an aspect that is often impaired in advanced dementia.

Saudi Arabia executed a Jordanian man, who said he was tortured into signing a false confession, a day after the UK's Middle East minister raised his case with Saudi ministers, the Foreign Office has said.

Lord Ahmad discussed Hussein Abo al-Kheir, who was convicted in 2015 on drug charges but had long maintained his innocence, with Saudi ministers on Saturday.

It was the final effort of what MEE understands to have been multiple interventions by the minister on al-Kheir's behalf.

On Sunday, al-Kheir was executed. The 57-year-old father of eight was not given an opportunity to call his family to say goodbye.

He was among 11 people executed this month, which were the first executions in the kingdom this year.

Heavy rainfall from New Zealands Cyclone Gabrielle more common on warmer planet "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Heavy rainfall events comparable to the intense downpour that hit New Zealand in February 2023 during Cyclone Gabrielle are four times more frequent in todays climate, a new rapid-attribution study finds.

Cyclone Gabrielle made history as the costliest tropical cyclone in the southern hemisphere, causing more than $8bn in damages. At least 11 people died when the cyclone swept across New Zealand in February 2023.

Te Tairwhiti (Gisborne) and Te Matau-a-Mui (Hawkes Bay) were the epicentre of devastation. The World Weather Attribution service investigates the extreme rainfall that hit this region over 13-14 February. Their scientists could not determine how much more likely or intense this particular extreme rainfall event was as a result of climate change.

However, the authors conclude that such extreme rainfall events now produce 30% more rain than they used to. Furthermore, they find that rainfall events on this scale are four times more likely to happen in todays climate than before humans warmed the planet, with a roughly 3% chance of happening in a given year.

Cyclone Gabrielle

In early February 2023, a tropical low pressure system formed in the Pacific Ocean and began moving westwards, where warm temperatures and favourable atmospheric conditions allowed it to intensify. On 8 February 2023, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology named the system Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle.

Dr Luke Harrington a senior lecturer in environmental science at the University of Waikato and an author on the study described the path of the cyclone to a press briefing. He notes that the system was category 2 when it was named and reached category 3 status by 10 February.

Feudal Florida: DeSantiss Demesne "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It is hardly a secret that, since his election in 2018, the Republican governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has been consolidating power. It is also known that the constitutionality of this consolidation, along with that of many of the sweeping policies implemented under his administration, is in question. What may be less apparent to the general public, and even to political junkies, is the extent of this power grab, how completely Florida is now DeSantiss Demesne.

An anonymous Florida legislator put it succinctly: Ron DeSantis is essentially the speaker of the House, the president of the Senate, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court right now. Tom Lee, the former Florida Senate president, described him more colorfully as the proverbial 1100-pound gorilla. For those not familiar, the joke is: Where does an 1100-pound gorilla sit? the answer being: Wherever the hell he wants.

This is of broad national concern because DeSantis is considered by many to be the main rival to Donald Trump in 2024, his prospects boosted by the many conservative donors uneasy with Trumps instability and further enhanced by a widely shared wish, among those who believe the GOP has become a Trump cult, to see a return to sanity. But DeSantiss accretion of power in Florida shows he may be a quieter but more effective authoritarian threat to democracy than Trump.

Ominously, it is not just the state government that bends the knee to Floridas headman. During the 2022 election, DeSantis (along with the governor of Missouri, Mike Parson) did not allow federal election monitors inside polling places in Florida. The federal government chose not to fight him on this, instead meekly agreeing not to go inside the polling places and to observe only from outside. This is especially concerning in light of the fact that a 2022 election that was ...

As Himalayas thaw, snow leopards scramble for habitat: Q&A with Bikram Shrestha "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

KATHMANDU When researchers last year confirmed the presence of the manul, the worlds grumpiest cat, on the worlds highest mountain, they immediately looked at past records of the elusive feline in Nepal. And they found that the first person to confirm the cats presence in the country was one Bikram Shrestha. It seemed fitting, given that Shrestha who recently completed his Ph.D. at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Charles University has extensive research experience in the Himalayas. But his cat of concern is of a heftier pedigree than the manul (Otocolobus manul): its the king of the mountains itself, the snow leopard (Panthera uncia). Shrestha studied zoology at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu and began his research career in 2004 by studying the Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) on Sagarmatha (also known as Mount Everest), a wild goat considered a key prey species for snow leopards. He went on to work for various organizations such as the U.S.-based Snow Leopard Conservancy and WWF before pursuing his doctorate in 2014. His team was also the first to confirm the presence of three snow leopards in lower-elevation areas in western Nepals Mustang district. During his doctorate studies, Shrestha carried out extensive fieldwork using scat analysis and camera traps in the Annapurna and Sagarmatha regions of Nepal. It was his team that found, nearly 17 years after the confirmation of the big cat in the Sagarmatha region, that the population of snow leopards there has beenThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Israels parliament on Tuesday moved a step closer to passing a bill that would allow politicians to overturn High Court judgements with a simple majority, as well as appoint judges.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned legislation to overhaul the countrys judiciary has been described as a judicial coup.

In an overnight session that stretched into the early morning, the Knesset also approved several other pieces of legislation, including legislation that would prevent the countrys attorney general from declaring Netanyahu unfit for office.

The prime minister would only be declared unfit for office due to physical or mental inability and then only by the prime minister himself or by the vote of three-quarters of cabinet members.

The parliament also passed a piece of legislation that would expand settlements in the West Bank.

The governor of Delta state who criticised Omo-Agege at the media interaction with journalists shortly after the inauguration of the new Press Centre, Government House, Asaba, said Deputy Senate President has no moral justification to talk about loan in the state.

Okowa said APC led government has failed woefully and had borrowed trillions of naira, even to pay salaries.

He said his non availability at the partys protest at the INECs headquarter in Abuja was because he got the Information about the protest within a short time frame.

He said that the PDP in unwavered by the antics of the ruling party to malign democracy.

Dr. Okowa noted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will adopt a different strategy against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while seeking redress over what he described as an elections with infringement of the electoral process.

According to him, there are different strategies but I know some part of electoral acts has been infringed upon. We will file in at the Tribunals this week.

There has been infringement of electoral process by INEC as they did not follow their rules as it ought to be.

He further rebuked claims of limiting the spread of infrastructural development to a particular part of Warri, saying that we have spent N20 billion on the storm water drainage in Asaba and Warri.

It is unfair for anyone who is aspiring to lead the state to begin to deceive Deltans. There is no moral justification for APC to tell such lies to score cheap political points he said.

When asked on partys division in the state over the choice of, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Okowa maintained that Sheriff is the will of Deltans having been elected in a free, fair and credible primaries.

Heavily Criticised Pro-lockdown Paper Cited Far More Than Anti-lockdown Papers "IndyWatch Feed World"

Formal scientific institutions took a battering during the pandemic, and deservedly so. From the wildly inaccurate predictions of SAGE modellers to the denial of natural immunity by signatories of the John Snow Memorandum, 'Science' (uppercase 's') has not had a good three years. A particularly striking illustration of this is citation patterns in the scientific literature. If things were working well, the best studies would get cited the most. Unfortunately, that appears not to be the case: citations have flowed disproportionately to studies that uphold The Narrative. In June, 2020, researchers from Imperial College London (including our old friend Neil Ferguson) published a paper in the prestigious journal Nature titled 'Estimating the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions on COVID-19 in Europe'. They concluded - on the basis of a complex model-fitting exercise - that lockdowns had saved the lives of 3.1 million people across 11 European countries. That's right, 3.1 million...

Dr. Susan Bradley, a Canadian psychiatrist and pioneer in child gender dysphoria treatment, came out against the popular model of affirming children's transgender identities and putting them on puberty blockers a practice she was once involved in in an interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation. Around 2000, the clinic began prescribing puberty blockers to gender-dysphoric children as a way to alleviate their distress, a model which has since become widely adopted by medical establishments around the world, including in the U.S. Bradley, who is now in her early eighties, expressed regret that the clinic had participated in the administration of puberty blockers for gender...

Delta Guber: Ibori Is Free To Vote For Any Candidate -Okowa "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

OKOWA AND IBORI

LAGOS MARCH 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has said that it was the choice of the political godfather and former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori to support any candidate in the next Saturdays gubernatorial election.

Answering questions from newsmen shortly after inaugurating the new press centre in the government house, Asaba on Monday, Okowa said Ibori has the choice following his rumoured support of the former governor and staunch member of PDP for the governorship of APC and deputy Senate president, Ovie Omo Agege.

According to him, just like many people in APC have defected to PDP to support the governorship candidate of PDP, Sheriff Oborevwori, it is the choice of anyone to support any candidate.

Some PDP chieftains in the state including members of Delta Unity group (DUG) who supported Olorogun David Edevie, candidate of Chief Ibori during the primary election of the party have dumped the party while pitching tents with Omo Agege.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Sapele, Delta State, Comrade Benson Okorodudu recently said the former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori was quoted as directing Deltans to vote for the state PDP gubernatorial candidate, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori even as he also agreed it was the turn of Okpe, Sapele, and Uvwie constituency where Sheriff comes from to produce the next governor of the state.

On the Obedient movement, Okowa described it as complex, saying it was influenced by the need for Southern presidency, stand of Christians, the issue of Ibos who felt it was their turn to produce the president and the belief by many people that change they needed lies on Peter Obi, adding that everyone has the right to make a choice.

The PDP vice presidential candidate gave insight why he could not attend the partys protest at the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja last week over the electoral body allegedly contravension of the provision of the Electoral laws during the Presidential and national assembly election.

Global ecosystems are at risk of losing carbon storage ability, study says "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Several regions of the world are at risk of losing their ability to store carbon, which could result in the drastic transformation of ecosystems and accelerated climate change, one recent study has found. Across the globe, landscapes are showing signs of losing their ability to absorb the amount of carbon they once could, according to a study called Diagnosing destabilization risk in global land carbon sinks, published in Nature last month. That would pose serious obstacles to the fight against climate change, as carbon storage in forests, peatlands and other ecosystems is key to keeping the global temperature below 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit). For the first time, weve demonstrated that for certain regions of the world, the land might be reaching a tipping point in terms of its ability to host significantly forested land and absorb significant amounts of carbon, said co-author Patrick McGuire, a staff meteorologist at the University of Reading and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science in the UK. The study reviewed the productivity of carbon storage of global ecosystems between 1981 and 2018, finding that many fluctuated greatly from year to year. So much fluctuation means that some parts of the world are at risk of turning into scrubland thats unable to host forests and other ecosystems that act as carbon sinks. Looking up at the rainforest canopy in Costa Rica. (Photo by Rhett Butler) One reason for this, the researchers said, is that landscapes have a memory of which years had high carbon storage andThis article was originally published on Mongabay

mRNA vaccine contamination much worse than thought: Jabs "up to 35%" DNA that turns human cells into long-term spike protein factories "IndyWatch Feed World"

The contamination of mRNA vaccines with DNA is far greater than initially thought at up to 35%, and the DNA's role in inducing human cells to produce the spike protein long term has been confirmed, according to the latest research. Earlier this month, the Daily Sceptic reported on the work of Dr. Kevin McKernan and his team who had subjected the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna to deep sequencing analysis and found alarming levels of DNA contaminants known as plasmids. These are small circular DNA molecules that in principle can self-replicate in bacterial and human cells and induce the cell to produce the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein long term. Each vaccine dose was found to contain billions of these plasmids. The Moderna vaccine appeared to contain DNA contamination at around the 'safe' level set by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) at the equivalent of one part per 3,000 mRNA molecules, though it's not clear how safe this level really is. The Pfizer vaccine, on the other...

Delta Gov: E.K.Clark Blesses LP Candidate, Pela, Says His Boys Working For Him "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

PELA

LAGOS MARCH 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Ahead of Saturdays governorship election scheduled for March 18, Elder statesman and leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark has declared his blessing for Ken Pella, the Labour Party candidate in Delta state.

This is even as Pela said that the chances of the Labour Party winning Delta state on Saturday is very bright, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acted with impunity for not transmitting presidential election results as it was supposed to do.

Clark, who gave his blessing to Pela when he paid a courtesy call on him on Monday in Abuja, said, you will have my blessings and my sons are in the field, whoever follows the process and wins is my governor.

My hope is whoever becomes the governor of Delta State, my home state, should be a straightforward person, competent, respected and of good character, not a person that will eat our money at the expense of the state. Nothing can prevent me from giving my blessing, so God will therefore guide you.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the visit, Pela said that this election circle is different, as power resides with the people, adding that the chances of the Labour Party are bright because the people are solidly behind them.

The Delta Labour Party governorship candidate, who said that their blessing of Clark to him is more than words, mocked the ruling party in the state, which was beaten by his party during the presidential election.

He said: The chances of the Labour Party are very bright in Delta and I am sure that we are all aware that in the last election, the PDP, the ruling party in Delta was beaten for the first time by an opposition party.

This election circle is different, the power resides with the people. Our chances are very bright because we believe the people are solidly behind us. We will win this election fair and square.

We did not have any fear going into the last election, we felt with the new electoral Act, BVAS there was no fear and INEC promised us severally, but they did certain things that we did not expect, they acted with impunity, against the law they did not transmit the results as they were supposed to, we will not let that happen again. LAGOS MARCH 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-At least three persons have been allegedly killed and some others abducted by suspected herdsmen in Patani community of Delta State

The suspected herdsmen were said to have invaded Toru-Angiama, a community in Patani Local Government Area, and killed one Mr Dennis, his son and one other person who were working on their farm, while an unspecified number of farmers were also said to have been abducted.

Sources in the community said the Late Mr Dennis and the others killed were attacked on their farmland while trying to fend off the herders and their cattle from grazing and destroying crops on their farm.

A former president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dr Chris Ekiyor, who hails from Patani Local Government Area, has however appealed for calm, calling on the government and security agencies to fish out the killers.

He urged the state government to address the issue of insecurity in the area so as to forestall any further crisis in area.

The indigenes of the local government area, particularly parents, have continually expressed their concern over the level of security risk on farmers, posed by the influx of herders into the community.

Delta Residents React As Banks Reject Withdrawn Old Naira Notes "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

NAIRA NOTES

LAGOS MARCH 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Some residents of Agbor, Owa, Umunede and environs have reacted to the circumstances surrounding the rejection of old naira notes given by banks and rejected by same banks for deposit in the locality.

The issue has been described as the height of complications and confusion.

Some of the residents argued that the redesign of Naira was a class conflict being suffered by the masses.

One Mr. Kennedy Ngbeken said I have never seen a situation were a bank will give money after withdrawal and rejects same for deposit.

When I asked the cashier what I should do with the old naira notes after rejecting it, he told me to go and spend it. What kind of  confusion  are we facing in  Nigeria ?

We are currently experiencing system failure. This is weeks after the Supreme Court judgement that the old naira notes be used till December 31 and the President and CBN Governor are still mute over the issue.

On his part, Mr. Stanley Mobuokwu,  said we have been going through a very difficult time since the issue of Naira swap came up. It got so worse that people are compelled to

buy naira with naira.

For over a month, what commercial banks are giving to customers is between N5000 and N3000 withdraw. How can a family of five or six survive with such an amount with the high cost of living ?

To make it worse, POS operators have been selling cash  at  very high charges and the  network is very poor.

Mr. Mobuokwu frowned at the ill-treatment meted to the masses by banks.

It is very unfortunate that after wasting several hours, they will tell you that you can only withdraw N3,000. Some customers come to the bank as early as 6am to pick numbers that enable them have access to the banking hall.

The staff of  banks were irrational in  their attitudes to customers. We are treated as if we dont have rights to be at the premises of the banks.  Tomorrow, they will start begging us to come open account with them.

Rolex Prices to Drop Further as Supply Surges "IndyWatch Feed World"

We are talking about the pre owned models here as the makers can control the new supply.  The second hand market is not deep enough.

There are still plenty of pools of cash out there and it strikes me that securing an inventory is a handy way of protecting cash.  So a heavy uptick in new buys could flood the market with used product.

Can you imagine what the value of a container of used rolexs might be?  It is still a lot with a usuable fifty percent discount..
