Muss man wissen.

Genetic analysis tool developed to improve cancer modeling "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Lifestyle behaviors such as eating well and exercising can be significant factors in ones overall health. But the risk of developing cancer is predominantly at the whim of an individuals genetics.

Our bodies are constantly making copies of our to produce new cells. However, there are occasional mistakes in those copies, a phenomenon geneticists call mutation. In some cases, these mistakes can alter proteins, fuse genes and change how much a gene gets copied, ultimately impacting a persons risk of developing cancer. Scientists can better understand the impact of mutations by developing predictive models for tumor activity.

Christopher Plaisier, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, is developing a called OncoMerge that uses genetic data to improve cancer modeling technology.

Serotonin gates the transfer of visual information from the eyes to the thalamus "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Humans are known to perceive the environment around them differently based on the situation they are in and their own feelings and sensations. Internal states, such as fear, arousal or hunger can thus affect the ways in which sensory information is processed and registered by the brain.

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Childrens Hospital, and Peking University have recently carried out a study investigating the possible effects of , a neurotransmitter known to regulate sleep, mood, , and other inner states, in the processing of visual information. Their findings, published in Neuron, suggest that serotonergic neurons in the brainstem (i.e., the central trunk of the mammalian brain) gate the transfer of visual information from the eyes to the thalamus, an egg-shaped area of the brain.

Internal states are known to affect sensory perception and processing, but this was generally thought to occur in the cortex or thalamus, Chinfei Chen, one of the researchers who carried out the study, told Medical Xpress. One of our previous studies revealed that arousal can suppress certain visual information channels at an earlier stage of the visual pathwayat the connection between the mouse retina and the thalamus, before the information even reaches the brain. This form of filtering of information suggests a very efficient means of processing only relevant information.

Counting Down: List Of Russian Army Equipment Not Yet Destroyed In Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans

Russia's one year anniversary of its special military operation in Ukraine marks a pivotal point not just for its symbolic significance, but also because it coincides with a sudden realisation on our part. That being that keeping track of the types of armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and aircraft in use by the Russian Armed Forces that have been destroyed has become considerably harder than listing those that haven't been, and subtracting from that list as time progresses. Hence, the list that follows.

Obviously, not all equipment in use with Russia's military may be deployed in Ukraine or even be actually operational for that matter, so to keep things manageable this list will include only those systems that have been acknowledged to be in mass production. Nevertheless, certain systems may be included or omitted on a case-by-case basis for instance because they are expected to be used operationally or, conversely, because including them would be impractical. Categories that have been excluded are small-sized (EOD) UGVs, civilian-grade UAVs, transport and training aircraft, naval vessels, coastal defence (missile) systems and (armoured) trucks. This list is updated as additional vehicle types are confirmed to be destroyed or captured.

Our list showing Ukrainian Army equipment not yet destroyed or captured can be found here

Lying about Lying: Why We Must Revisit the Definition of Fake News "IndyWatch Feed World"

The phrase fake news continues to be deployed routinely in US politics. In a polarized political atmosphere, both Republicans and Democrats distrust media organizations affiliated with opposing parties. This means that most of what is uttered or written by CNN is fake news for Republicans, and much of what appears in Republicans-affiliated media is fake news for Democrats.

The phrase is now so prevalent and has multiple meanings to the point that it is impossible to agree on a common definition. Even fact checking organizations or news desks contribute to the troubling phenomenon of fake news by selectively fact-checking news and information affiliated with one side of the political aisle while ignoring the other.

Some traced the fake news story to a small Eastern European town called Veles in Macedonia. This particular claim is associated with Craig Silverman, a media editor at Buzzfeed. We ended up finding a small cluster of news websites all registered in the same town, Silverman was quoted by the BBC. The objective of these websites seemed mostly financial, clickbait as they are called, to lure in unsuspecting users to seemingly unlikely headlines.

Later, the term became very political. It was former US President Donald Trump who publicized the term, transforming it into the major phenomenon seen today. Mike Wendling of the BBC, however, claimed that it was Trumps staunch rival in the 2016 US Presidential elections, Hillary Clinton, who first used the term in a speech in December of the same year.

Manufactured consent

Actually, fake news predates both Clinton and Trump. When I first moved to the United States over two decades ago, I recall my total shock at seeing the headlines of print tabloids, always positioned at the center of major US grocery stores: From unsubstantiated celebrity scandals to breaking news about aliens impregnating human females before returning to their home planet. Even as a newcomer to the country, it was obvious to me that such rubbish was also fake news. Sadly, these tabloids were often sold faster than legitimate newspapers, which suggests that the biggest challenge posed by fake news is our gullibility and will...

Ranking the Myst games "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Im ranking the Myst games for no particular reason. I like thinking about them and I like writing, so here we are. Some readers may be surprised that there were more than two of these gamesthis list is for you.

This is emphatically a recollective ranking, not a retrospective ranking. I played these all a long time ago, and my memory has condensed into a few moments and emotional reactions. My ranking reflects not just the games themselves, but also who I was at the time I played them. I did not make any attempt to overwrite my memories by playing the games again, and I only did research for fact checking purposes.

7. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (2003)

Uru was developed as a massively multiplayer online game, and was released the same year as Second Life, one year prior to World of Warcraft. If youve never heard of this before welcome to this list!

At some point during development, they pulled the plug on the multiplayer part, but the resulting game had MMO thumbprints all over it. In the traditional Myst games, you navigate the world by jumping between designated nodes, seeing beautiful pre-rendered images from carefully chosen perspectives. Uru did away with nodes, allowing you to freely explore its 3D worldbut it wasnt prerendered, so it didnt look nearly as good. It had a third-person camera, and an avatar editor that seemed advanced at the time. Despite the avatar, they wanted to maintain the players identification with the player character, so they encouraged you to make an avatar that looked like yourself.

Uru contained a traditional Myst game in it.  That means theres a hub world, and multiple ages that you access through books.  But in Uru, there was nothing at the hub world, and I cannot for the life of me remember any of the ages.

I think what made the ages dull was a total lack of context or history. There were just a few books sitting on a large and empty bookshelf.  The game was originally intended to be episodic, but later episodes were canceled.  So the ages just felt like odds and ends, with no coherent arc.  The game took place far in the future relative to other Myst games, and youre on the trail of Yeesha, the daughter of one of the characters from the main series. She was a mystic archetype, she was mostly vague and insufferable.

There were no further episodes to the game, but they did release the online content in an offline format. I remember big dull underground ruins where you would search for sparse secret collectibles. I suppose for an MMO you need to give people enough busy work to maintain an active player count, and then the social aspects can flesh out the rest of the experience. Here it was a lot of dull exploration, traversing distances that just seemed way too long. And I cant imagine mult...

FTC Chair Refused Musk's Meeting Request, Told Him to Stop Delaying Investigation "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/ftc-chair-refused-musks-meeting-request-told-him-to-stop-delaying-investigation/

Twitter owner Elon Musk requested a meeting with Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan late last year, but he was rebuffed and told to stop dragging his heels on providing documents and depositions needed for the FTC investigation into Twitter's privacy and data practices, a New York Times report said yesterday.

"In a Jan. 27 letter declining the meeting, Ms. Khan told a Twitter lawyer to focus on complying with investigators' demands for information before she would consider meeting with Mr. Musk," the NYT wrote.

Twitter has to comply with conditions in a May 2022 settlement in which it agreed to pay a $150 million penalty for targeting ads at users with phone numbers and email addresses collected from those users when they enabled two-factor authentication. Last year's settlement was reached after the FTC said Twitter violated the terms of a 2011 settlement that prohibited the company from misrepresenting its privacy and security practices.

Inside the prisoner-led struggle to win education for all "IndyWatch Feed War"

Embed from Getty Images

Despite increasing recognition that prison education is a key tool for reducing crime, Washington State prisoners were recently forced to gather in a janitors closet to organize and facilitate college education for people incarcerated in several prisons across the state.

They took this dramatic step because new official restrictions are jeopardizing a liberating, prisoner-led program known as Taking Education And Creating History, or TEACH. Organized by a handful of incarcerated people including me over a decade ago, TEACHs goal is to democratize education for people with long sentences.

Between community support and financial backing outside the correctional system, TEACH successfully circumvented the Department of Corrections, or DOC, policy of excluding long-term prisoners from education for much of its existence. Since 2013, over 300 incarcerated individuals across three state prisons have become college students.

In a monumental breakthrough, legislation was passed in 2021 that turned TEACH into an official, DOC-recognized program. However, new threats to the life-saving program are leading prisoners to renew their fight for education for all.

An investment worth making

Men incarcerated at the Washington State Reformatory founded the Black Prisoners Caucus in 1972. Over the years, the caucus has done everything from drafting legislative bills to organizing fundraisers that support impoverished communities.

Roughly a decade ago, members of the Black Prisoners Caucus decided to organize around a common complaint: that the Washington DOC does not prioritize people with sentences longer than seven years for higher education. Whe...

Half of 'long Covid' sufferers have never had Covid, says new study "IndyWatch Feed World"

The battle of ideas around Covid has few clashes as hotly contested as Long Covid. Alarmists have hyped the frequency and severity with which infection causes long-term damage. Sceptics see no reason for panic. A new study helps to settle at least part of this debate. The paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association's (JAMA) Network Open looked at "post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) in young people after mild acute infection" to find how common it was and to find risk factors. Participants were aged between 12 and 25. The authors offer this straightforward conclusion: "PCC was not associated with biological markers specific to viral infection." That is, participants were equally likely to suffer from 'Long Covid', whether or not they had suffered from acute COVID-19. The researchers concluded that Long Covid is predicted by "initial symptom severity" and, intriguingly, "psychosocial factors".

Signature verification software used by Maricopa County says 10% is 'high-confidence' match "IndyWatch Feed World"

With Kari Lake's legal complaint alleging systematic signature verification failures in Maricopa County remanded by the Arizona Supreme Court to trial court, closer examination of the signature verification software used by the county reveals a strikingly low threshold for signatures to qualify as "high-confidence" matches. Since falling about 17,000 votes short in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election to Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs, Lake has continued to contest the election results in court, arguing that there were ballot chain of custody and signature verification issues in addition to thousands of Republican voters disproportionately disenfranchised on Election Day, when voting machine errors occurred in nearly 60% of the voting centers in Maricopa County. Lake has requested that the election results be invalidated or that she be declared the winner.

What a Real Estate Listing Can Tell You About a Strong Town "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Real estate agents will look for every advantage to try to sell a property, from the homes desirable features to a neighborhoods amenities to the local school system. So, a real estate listing can be used as a roadmap to the attributes that Strong Towns advocates for: human-scale development, safe places to walk and bike, and responsive local government. But since no listing will ever come right out and say "heaven help you if youre an avid walker," here's a guide to deciphering whether youre looking at a nice house in an appealing, resilient neighborhood, or just a nice house.

1. Photos

Every good listing on a real estate website will have professional-quality photos documenting all the best attributes of the property. You may see soaring atriums, tastefully appointed bathrooms, and lovely landscaping around a backyard fire pit. But if an agent knows the town or neighborhood is a selling point, theyll include photos of those, too. So after you virtually visit every room in the house, look for the slideshow to continue with photos of a thriving main street, nearby parks and recreational facilities, or scenes of natural beauty that draw residents together. If you don't see any photos beyond the house or yard, they may be telling you something by omission.

Vulture carrion potential boon and threat for endangered Iberian lynx: Studies "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

During a study last year in Spain to assess scavenging by vultures, researchers made a surprising and unexpected find. A small number of Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), among the worlds most endangered feline species, readily feasted on the carcasses. According to the study authors, this is one of the first documented instances of such behavior, which could have both positive and negative conservation implications. Researchers found that 12 out of 17 lynx present in the study area fed on carcasses, including two adults and a youngster who feasted at the same time. They also recorded some of the wild cats scent-marking some of the remains and, in some instances, trying to hide, or cache, their bounty. The researchers published the findings in the journal Biological Conservation. On the one hand, the scientists believe this could be a potential important resource for the recovering species in areas where their natural prey, the endangered European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), is seriously depleted because of disease. But the behavior also has caused concern among conservationists, as carcasses can be vectors for disease or for contamination due to lead bullets or poison found in hunted animals. We thought this scavenging could be a problem for the lynx, Jorge Tobajas, lead author of the paper with the University of Crdoba and Institute for Game and Wildlife Management, told Mongabay in an interview. Maybe there is this overlooked effect of the scavenging behavior because until now the lynx was thought of as a specialist predator inThis article was originally published on Mongabay

I Voted "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

This boomer always votes in every election, even for the mythical dog catchercivic duty dontcha know.  Today was easy since there were only two items on my ballot.

1. An additional 3% sales tax on recreational, not medical, marijuana.

I have nothing against marijuana; indeed, I used it myself when I was much younger; but I often vote for taxes just to counter the votes of folks who automatically vote no on any question that has tax in it.  Yeah, sales taxes are regressive; but folks who have actual prescriptions wont have to pay it.

2. Lindbergh School Board five candidates for three positions.

School board elections are important, and not entirely because we want to keep fundies off of them.  I voted for an actual teacher who has endorsements from organizations with equity in their names, a guy who uses various versions of inclusive among his issues, and a guy who likes teachers and thinks that they should get a raise.  I declined to vote for a human resources manager (dont get me started) and a guy with parental rights as one of his issues (possibly a dog whistle about cancelling non-cis-het folks and removing from the history curriculum any mention of race).

Scott Ritter: US Complicit in Ukraines War on Journalists "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Scott Ritter Sputnik 03.04.2023

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, the well-known Russian journalist/blogger, Vladlen Tatarsky, whose real name was Maxim Fomin, was killed in what appears to have been a targeted assassination.

At the time of his murder, Tatarsky had over 560,000 followers on his Telegram channel, making him one of the most influential voices when it came to covering the ongoing Russian special military operation in Ukraine.

The Russian government has publicly condemned the attack, with Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemning the role played by the West, noting that the harassment of Russian journalists by the West constitutes a veritable witch hunt that represents an acquiescence, if not outright complicity, in the murder of persons like Tatarsky and Daria Dugina, the daughter of the noted Russian philosopher, Alexander Dugin, and a journalist in her own right.

Not a single case of the violent death of a Russian journalist hailed as a success by the Kiev regime and its thugs, has been investigated by Western countries, international organizations, or foreign professional communities, and not even basic human sympathy has been shown, Zakharova noted.

The double standard of the collective West, and in particular the United States, which prides itself for its ostensible support of a free press, has been put on display for all the world to see. In 2012, Marie Colvin, a war correspondent for The Sunday Times, was killed while covering the conflict in Syria.

In February 2019, Judge Amy Berman Jackson, of the US District Court in Washington, DC, awarded Marie Colvins estate damages in the amount of $300 million, claiming that Colvin had been specifically targeted by the Syrian government because of her profession. Judge Jackson further stated that The murder of journalists acting in their professional capacity could have a chilling effect on reporting such events worldwide, adding that a targeted murder of an American citizen whose courageous work was not only important, but vital to our understanding of war zones and of wars generally, is outrageous. [Note: The Syrian government denies that Marie Colvin was specifically targeted. She died when a so-called media center in a rebel-held town that doubled as a command center was struck by Syrian artillery. Colvin was operating in Syria without the permission of the Syrian government, in an active war zone.]

The murder of Daria Dugina and Vladlen Tatarsky clearly represents the deliberate targeting of journalists operating in their professional capacity. Both Dugina and Tatarsky provided reporting that was vital to our understanding of war zones an...

Yeni drt denizalt gemimiz iin bildirdiimiz isimler unlardr; 1) Saldray, 2) Batray, 3) Atlay, 4) Yldray. Bunlarn manalarn izaha bile hacet olmad kanaatndaym. The names we have announced for our four new submarines are as follows; 1) Saldray, 2) Batray, 3) Atlay, 4) Yldray. I believe there is no need to explain their meanings. The meanings of these words, which are pure Turkish in themselves, that is, (the one who) attacks, (the one who) sinks, (the one who) shoots, (the one who) intimidates. (By Mustafa Kemal Atatrk)

The rapidly modernising Turkish Republic of the 1930s looked at Germany's high technology industry with significant interest to modernise several aspects of its society and services. Throughout the decade, some 300 German Jewish scientists that fled Nazism were welcomed with open arms to continue their research in Trkiye, while the Turkish Air Force ordered a total of 24 Heinkel He 111 bombers and 26 Focke-Wulf 44/58K trainer aircraft from Germany in 1937. [1] In 1940, the national railway company TCDD placed an order for six German MT5200 diesel multiple units, which were on a par with the most advanced trains operating in Europe and the world at that time. [2]

Arguably the most significant attempt at importing German high-tech engineering came in 1936, when the Turkish Navy ordered four Project 280/Ay-class submarines designed on the basis of the German Type IX ocean-going class of submarines. The Ay-class was officially developed by the Dutc...

Door cam footage of Natalya Vovk, Ukrainian national suspected of killing Russian journalist Daria Dugina.
RT | April 4, 2023

The main suspect in the murder of prominent Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, Darya Trepova, has confessed to investigators details of her involvement in the incident, according to the news outlet Fontanka.

Tatarsky was killed in an explosion on Sunday at a cafe in St. Petersburg, after Trepova handed him a gift, a statuette, that contained an improvised explosive device (IED). The bombing, which also wounded 40 people, has been classified as a terrorist attack.

According to Fontanka, Trepova claims that it all started when she made friends with a certain activist online and was offered to move to Kiev to take up an editorial position at an unnamed media channel. Before she could be hired, however, she was told that she had to undergo an internship to prove that she knows how to deal with Russian propaganda.

Her first task was to go to the Listva bookstore in St. Petersburg and strike up a friendship with Tatarsky, who was holding an event there. Afterwards, she was reportedly to...

The new NATO "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Its grown a bit today. Finland has joined the alliance.

Im a bit bothered by that hole in the North wheres Sweden? It seems they have applied to join NATO, but Turkey is being a pain in the butt, kind of a Minchin of Asia Minor.

But membership applications must be approved by all existing NATO countries. And Turkey positioned itself as a spoiler, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan using the process to extract concessions and score domestic political points. Although he ultimately came around on Finland, he has continued to hold out on Sweden, citing Stockholms refusal to extradite those he calls terrorists affiliated with the militant Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.

Charles XII would not have been happy. There he was, in exile in Turkey, when he rushed back to Sweden specifically to make sure they wouldnt make peace with Russians.

Eventually, in the autumn of 1714, their warning letter reached him. In it, those executive and legislative bodies told the absentee King that unless he quickly returned to Sweden, they would independently conclude an achievable peace treaty with Russia, Poland and Denmark. This stark admonition prompted Charles to rush back to Sweden.

He would have wanted Sweden to be part of NATO, Im sure.

We wont mention that when he got back to Sweden he decided to declare war and invadeNorway? Where he was killed? History is complicated. I think we can safely say were living in one of the more complicated times in history.

Bridge to the Ancestors: Indigenous Run Decries Colonial Violence in Texas "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

MONAHANS, Texas On March 25, a small band of runners, shadowed by a few vehicles emblazoned with messages reading Protect Our Water and Bridge to the Ancestors, set forth from Monahans Sandhills State Park. Running relay style on the frontage road of Interstate 1-20, the mostly Lakota runners passed gas plants and fracking sand mines heading west toward Balmorhea Lake, a rare water feature in this high West Texas desert, and into the Big Bend. The route of Bridge to the Ancestors Youth Walk, organized by the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, links into the flow of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo and southward to the Gulf of Mexico. The effort is being used to highlight ongoing colonial violence targeting Native peoples across the borderlands of south Texas and northern Mexico and beyond.

They took the silver, the gold, whatever they could, Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribal Chair Juan Mancias said of early violence of Spanish explorers and would-be conquistadors. Then he quickly namechecked a handful of oil and gas companies, who he described as modern-day colonizers continuing and compounding legacies of genocidal violence.

Its not right for a few nerds that run [Energy Transfer Partners], and Exxon, and Next Decade to decide whats better for us. Because they dont know. Because all of the stuff thats coming out of here is still going overseas, just like all the gold and the silver.

LAGOS APRIL 4TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The Delta state liaison office, Lagos formally situated at 19 KarimuKotu Street, has relocated to a rented apartment at Plot 1674 Oyin-Jolayemi Street, opposite UBA, Off KarimuKotun, Victoria Island Lagos.

The Director and Liaison Officer, Mrs Osodi Maureen has called on Deltans who want to get their state of origin certificate, attestation and carry out other official matters to go straight to the new venue to be attended to.

It could be recalled that the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu said the state government entered into a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement with property developers and managers to develop the site to a 10-story 60 luxury flats that will earn the government further income.

The commissioner had disclosed this while addressing the press recently in Asaba debunkingallegations that the state government had sold the liaison office in Lagos.

According to him, the Lagos State Government approved 10-story building out of the 21-story building they proposed.

The Commissioner said on completion, the building would have 60 flats, out of which 21 would be handed over to the state government and the civil servants will return to occupy two or more flats in it.

The assuring word from the state commissioner gave succour to civil servants working in Lagos who had frowned on the challenges involved in the idea of landlord becoming tenant.

Tell Attorney-General Dreyfus to end the illegal imprisonment of Julian Assange - Thursday 10pm Mordialloc "IndyWatch Feed World"

From 10am until 12pm tomorrow, on Thursday 6 April, outside the electoral office of the Attorney General Mark Dreyfus in the south-eastern Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc, supporters of Julian Assange will be protesting to demand that the Australian government act to end the British Government's imprisonment of Julian Assange.

The Attorny-General Mark Dreyfus, as the most senior legal officer in Australia, must surely be aware that the British Government's imprisonment of Assange, who has broken no British or Australian law, in solitary confinement for 23 hours per day, is in violation of British law, international law and the First Amendment to the US constitution which guarantees the right to free speech. I would be most interested to hear from Mark Dreyfus, himself, why the Australian government has chosen not to act to end the illegal imprisonment of Assange, but I expect not to be given this opportunity.

Please come along to hear speeches, hold banners or hand out leaflets.

Speech: Why won't the Australian Government act to end the illegal imprisonment of Assange?

Trump the creep "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

During this week when it will be all Trump, all the time, this article in The New Yorker by Ronan Farrow from back in 2018 shows what a pathetic creep Trump is and how his cronies worked out a system for concealing his affairs with Karen McDougal, a former Playboy Playmate, and other women.

Trump and McDougal began an affair, which McDougal later memorialized in an eight-page, handwritten document provided to The New Yorker by John Crawford, a friend of McDougals. When I showed McDougal the document, she expressed surprise that I had obtained it but confirmed that the handwriting was her own.

The interactions that McDougal outlines in the document share striking similarities with the stories of other women who claim to have had sexual relationships with Trump, or who have accused him of propositioning them for sex or sexually harassing them. McDougal describes their affair as entirely consensual. But her account provides a detailed look at how Trump and his allies used clandestine hotel-room meetings, payoffs, and complex legal agreements to keep affairssometimes multiple affairs he carried out simultaneouslyout of the press.

On November 4, 2016, four days before the election, the Wall Street Journal reported that American Media, Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, had paid a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for exclusive rights to McDougals story, which it never ran. Purchasing a story in order to bury it is a practice that many in the tabloid industry call catch and kill. This is a favorite tactic of the C.E.O. and chairman of A.M.I., David Pecker, who describes the President as a personal friend.

As the pool party at the Playboy Mansion came to an end, Trump asked for McDougals telephone number. For McDougal, who grew up in a small town in Michigan and worked as a preschool teacher before beginning her modelling career, such advances were not unusual. John Crawford, McDougals friend, who also helped broker her deal with A.M.I., said that Trump was another powerful guy hitting on her, a gal whos paid to be at work. Trump and McDougal began talking frequently on the phone, and soon had what McDougal described as their first date: dinner in a private bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel. McDougal wrote that Trump impressed her. I was so nervous! I was into his intelligence + charm. Such a polite man, she wrote. We talked for a couple hours then, it was ON! We got naked + had sex. As McDougal was getting dressed to leave, Trump did something that surprised her. He offered me money, she wrote. I looked at him (+ felt sad) + said, No thanks Im not that girl. I slept w/you because I like you NOT for money H...

Ukrainian Refugees in Munich A Real Crisis "IndyWatch Feed World"

COMMENT: Hi Martin,

I live in a commute in Munich in a nice neighborhood, I pay around 700 EUR rent for the smallest room, but we have a garden and live with a few Ukrainians. They are very nice, seem like reasonable folks.
What Im worried about though is the refugee system we have in place here in Bavaria. I wanted to move to another room, but I couldnt: was kind of too expensive, 800 EUR/month. Guess who took it, another Ukrainian of course, the state is paying it (Arbeitsamt). The crazy thing is that Im having trouble with inflation and because I additionally have to pay taxes so that Ukrainians can live in the most luxurious room of the house for more than a year already. I would have no problem supporting them for a few months. But the thing is, a year has passed and they dont even bother to search for work. They just go to German classes a few times a week. And spend most of the day talking and chilling in the kitchen. All of that while Munich is desperately searching for labour.

I also heard from sources, that they dont really seem to be interested to work. A contact of mine offered them work, but they told him they cant, as they are too busy learning German. Which I dont understand, I see them all the time having fun in our kitchen. They dont even really seem to learn German, one of them cant say more than Guten Tag after one year of German classes
Additionally, it seems like they are getting money from the state for leisure. As far as I have seen, they already went more often for traveling this past year through Europe than me. What I dont understand, they also seem to be traveling back and forth to Ukraine to visit friends and family. I dont get it, I thought that country was at war.
All in all, I think its good to help refugees. But when I have to suffer so that I can pay them to rent the best rooms in the house, while they have fun and are chilling in the kitchen, travel around Europe, even go visit their family in Ukraine while at war, and all that for more than a year, then the system doesnt seem to be very fair to me, something doesnt add up.
Best,

J

Go Greene, go unseen "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Marjorie Taylor Greene got some free PR time on 60 Minutes. She used it to assert that Democrats are pedophiles who sexualize children.

CBS anchor Lesley Stahl was shocked to hear that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stands firmly behind her frequent claim that Democrats are pedophiles. On 60 Minutes, Stahl pressed Greene on her use of the slur, and the Georgia Republican defiantly responded that its the truth: They support grooming children.

They are not pedophiles, Stahl rejoined incredulously. Why would you say that?

OK, Leslie StahlI would ask, Why would you let that baboon on the air? I would also ask of any of the higher-ups at CBS, Why did you let that slur air? Have you no editors?

Back to you, Leslie: Why did you make such a pathetically feeble response? You knew going into this what kind of nastiness and lies Greene would deliver, werent you at all prepared?

I knew this shitshow was coming on ahead of time, and chose to not watch the show (not a difficult decision, 60 Minutes hasnt been relevant for a long time.) Apparently, the American TV watching public felt the same.

Maybe someday the powers-that-be that fill our homes with news selected only for its controversial nature will realize that they are driving the culture wars they also deplore. The Right is a hate group.

After marriage equality triumphed, the pedophile smear against Democrats morphed into something stranger: the deranged charges of child trafficking that drive the QAnon conspiracy theory. When those accusations proved obviously false, right-wing media figures and MAGA Republicans such as Greene seamlessly shifted to widely applying the groomer term to Democrats advocating for tolerance of trans people, especially adolescent trans care and classroom discussion of LGBTQ issues.

The through line here, as historian Brandy Schillace points out, is that the right has recoiled both at the prospect of happy gay families and at young trans people finding better lives with their own parents loving support. The connection, Schillace told me, is resistance to seeing homosexuals or transgender people as part of families, carried out by associating LGBTQ people with child predators.

Stop treating them as a respectable part of the discourse.

Jesus. Greene is doubling down in a new ad.

Is South India in the Crosshairs of Islamic State? "IndyWatch Feed War"

<p>The Islamic State, in its 23rd issue of Voice of Khorasan magazine published last month, has trained its focus on the Southern part of India. In a message entitled a message to the inhabitants in the land occupied by cow and mice worshipping filths, Islamic State has claimed responsibility for failed attacks in Coimbatore (Tamilnadu) and Mangalore (Karnataka), which occurred last October and November respectively. The message asks: Do you not consider out attacks in Coimbatore (Tamilnadu) and Karnataka (Bangalore), where our brothers took revenge for the honour of our religion and terrorized kufar and its followers? (sic). In January 2023, the <a href= "https://www.geopoliticalmonitor.com/is-islamic-state-in-hind-province-regrouping/"> Geopolitical Monitor</a> highlighted these attacks as being inspired by Islamic States ideology and as an sign of Islamic State in Hind province attempting to regroup.  Interesting as it may seem, both these attacks are failed attacks possibly indicating that the Islamic State in an attempt to garner political mileage and make inroads into South India, may have taken credit for these attacks, albeit belatedly, for reasons outlined below.</p> <p>The claim of responsibility for the botched attempts was published in its 23rd issue of Voice of Khorasan which came out in March 2023, almost six months after the actual events occurred. Usually, Islamic State claims its attacks immediately either through its official outlets <em>Amaq News Agency or</em> through statements released by its linked channels or through <em>Al Naba Newsletter,</em> if the attacks are carried out by modules linked to the Islamic State. On the other hand, if the attacks are carried out by inspired modules, then the claim of responsibility comes a little later and at times the attacks are not claimed at all. For instance, some of the terrorist attacks by the Islamic State in Jammu & Kashmir immediately claimed by Amaq News Agency buttress the fact that the Islamic State is swift to claim responsibility for their attacks:

Iraq: Turkish Airlines ends flights to Sulaymaniyah in protest at alleged PKK ties

Discovery of apparent air corridor between Iraq and Syria has put spotlight on PUK's links to the Kurdish armed group

Turkish Airlines has suspended its flights to Iraqi Kurdistans Sulaymaniyah airport in April as a response to alleged growing ties between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), two Turkish sources familiar with the issue told Middle East Eye.

The sources used the apparent existence of an air corridor between Iraq and Syria allegedly carrying senior PKK fighters at the behest of PUK leader Bafel Talabani, which was revealed after two helicopters came down in Iraq last month.

Talabanis PUK is the second-largest party in the semi-autonomous region and the dominant force in Sulaymaniyah.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed militia spearheaded by PKK-linked groups, said last month that nine of its members died in the Eurocopter AS350 helicopters crash.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said the helicopters belonged to his political rivals the PUK, which is believed to have ties with the PKK. However, Turkish sources alleged that the helicopters were rented through a local company by the US government and then given to the PUK.

This is simply a bad law. Im sure most teachers in the state, even the Christian ones, would prefer that the state support them with better salaries, more supply money, and better facilities.

Maybe they should also dictate that the posters be mounted on steel plates that can be used as shields, because theyre sure as hell not going to do anything more substantial to prevent school shootings.

Eight dolphins were found washed up on beaches in the Greater Tokyo Area on Tuesday morning, according to local news reports. The mammals, identified as melon-headed whales, looked like they were struggling to breathe, said Mibu Saito, a local official who visited the site nearby Isumi and Ichinomiya in Chiba Prefecture. "I felt sorry for all those weak dolphins that had washed ashore and we still don't know why they were stranded there," Saito told VICE World News. Of the eight found, four were dead, while the rest were returned to the ocean. A day earlier, 33 dolphins were also found beached just a few hundred meters away. Passersby and surfers tried to carry or roll the dolphins towards the ocean, but two died, Saito said.

Chinas Increasing Engagement with the GCC "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

China is the largest trading partner of Saudi Arabia and the second largest natural gas importer of Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The GCC countries have been trying to diversify their economies, and Chinese investments in non-oil sectors have enabled them to build stronger ties with the region by investing in both oil and other sectors. Chinas growing investment in GCCs diversification is however met with certain complex geopolitical realities that both parties will have to navigate to make the engagement a success.

Owing to its oil needs, Chinas state-owned companies have invested and engaged with oil companies in the region. Sinopec-Saudi Aramcos MoU to collaborate further on pre-existing joint ventures (YASREF), CNPC-Adnoc joint venture, transfer of stakes of CNPC in Adnoc to CNOOC, CNPCs contract with Kuwait Oil Company on rig supply, etc are some key deals that prove the growing cooperation between the oil companies of China and the GCC. However, China understands the need to engage on multiple fronts to have a holistic relationship with the GCC countries. Chinas Foreign Minister Qin Gang emphasised the importance of GCC countries to China and talked about signing a free trade agreement to further deepen the economic ties. The interest to expand cooperation into other sectors such as infrastructure, finance, telecommunications, space exploration, renewable energy, nuclear energy, and other high-potential sectors, has been taking a stride in the discussions between the two sides.

Chinas approach towards the GCC is also fueled by its ambitious BRI project. Foreign investments in key infrastructure are dominated by Chinese firms in the region. Chinas industrial investments in the Khalifa port of the UAE, FDI in Kuwaits infrastructure, Bahrains housing sector, and Qatars Lusail Stadium are some prominent examples.

The Covid-19 pandemic paved the way for investments in green energy projects in the region. In 2022, there was a substantial increase in the number of green and sustainable bonds signed. However, with China being one of the leading exporters of solar products, the impact of the slowdown in Chinas manufacturing sector has had some impact on GCCs diversification process. The pandemic also provided China with the opportunity to increase its engagement with the GCC employing vaccine diplomacy and cooperation on the gl...

Journalists in Brazil have a saying, an expression penned by Brazilian poet Gonalves Dias: Boys, I saw it! Its popular among anyone going to the field to make reports, interview and witness facts and then report to others what they saw. And heard. In this article, we used the words of the poet from Brazils north as a foreword to some conversations we held with those who, for years now, not only know and report on Amazonia but live fully the violence that goes on in the region. According to environmentalist group Global Witness, there were 20 environmental activists murdered in Brazil in 2020 alone. In 2022, the deaths of journalist Dom Phillips and Indigenous specialist Bruno Pereira were, according to reporter Daniel Camargos, a nightmare that came true for anyone who like him frequently reports on events in Amazonian territories. U.S. firm quits Indonesian gasification project in major blow to coal ambitions "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Indonesias plans to develop a coal gasification industry have been thrown into doubt following the withdrawal of a major foreign investor. During an investor call in late March, U.S.-based Air Products and Chemicals, a leading provider of coal gasification technology, confirmed it had withdrawn from all of its projects in Indonesia, including a planned facility in Bengalon, East Kalimantan province, and a $2.3 billion plant in Muara Enim, South Sumatra province, that broke ground in early 2022. The news, less than a year and a half after the investment deals were signed, is a stunning setback to the countrys ambitious plans to turn coal into dimethyl ether (DME) and create new market demand for domestically mined coal. The timing was quite surprising, said Andri Prasetiyo, program manager at Trend Asia, an Indonesian nonprofit that advocates for accelerating the transition to clean energy. The Indonesia government claimed the project was ongoing, as a national strategic project. Area cleared for coal mining in Borneo, East Kalimantan. Image by Rhett A. Butler/Mongabay. Coal gasification is a century-old technology in which coal is converted into a gas that can then be used for industrial or transportation purposes. DME made from Indonesias coal-to-gas plants would, in theory, be used as an alternative fuel in industrial, chemical or transportation applications, replacing imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The economics of coal gasification in Indonesia have been challenging since the beginning, and rising inflation has only made matters worse, said Ghee Peh, an energy finance analyst at theThis article was originally published on Mongabay

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center said an adult female common dolphin was found Saturday and was taken by some of its team for a necropsy. Fox Philadelphia reported the dolphin was found on the Baltimore Avenue beach. A porpoise washed up on a beach in the Ortley Beach section of Toms River on Tuesday. Necropsy results are pending from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Porpoises and dolphins are both species of odontocetes or toothed whales. Porpoises have rounder faces and more triangular dorsal fins, while dolphins have more pointed beaks and dorsal fins.

Refugee returns, smuggling and militias are among the key issues Jordan is seeking to resolve with Syria as part of its plan to normalise Arab relations with Damascus, Jordanian officials told Middle East Eye.

The plan is based on the idea of reciprocity, said Mohammad Momani, a member of the Jordanian Senates Arab and Foreign Relations Committee. Help us so that we can help you, as he put it.

In recent weeks, Syrian normalisation with its Arab neighbours has gathered pace, with Saudi Arabia the latest country to publicly re-engage with Damascus.

In 2021, Jordan, which has taken in some 675,000 Syrian refugees, opened a key border crossing with Syria and began high-level talks with its officials. Yet the relationship has not been easy, with cross-border weapons and drug smuggling becoming an occasionally deadly issue and contributing to increased narcotics problems in the kingdom.

According to Momani, the issue of refugees is one of the top priorities in Jordans latest push for a deal with Syria. The plan, which hopes to resolve issues between Syria and other Arab countries and help end S...

Saudi Arabia has carried out an execution during the holy month of Ramadan for the first time in 14 years, according to the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR).

ESOHR, an NGO with offices in London and Berlin, said the kingdom had not witnessed a death sentence during the religious month since 2009.

The group reported that the execution took place on 30 March, bringing the number of total death sentences implemented in Saudi Arabia this year to 17.

"The execution of the death penalty during the holy month is in addition to the series of violations that have emerged and intensified during King Salman's and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's reign," ESOHR said in a statement.

The group said that detainees, including minors, remain at risk in Saudi prisons as authorities attempt to speed up the execution of death sentences.

"It shows Saudi Arabia's insistence on no social, cultural or humanitarian restrictions. It also shows its lack of commitment to promises to restrict and limit executions."

Tunisian President Kais Saied has instructed the foreign ministry to "initiate procedures for appointing an ambassador of Tunisia in Damascus", according to an official statement, in the latest move towards Arab states' normalisation with the government of Bashar al-Assad.

The statement, published on the presidency's Facebook page, stressed the "necessity of adhering to the principles of the foreign policy of the Tunisian diplomacy" and said that the countrys "positions abroad stem from the will of its people".

Tunisia was among several Arab countries that severed their ties with Assad a decade ago, in the aftermath of his brutal crackdown on anti-government protests during the pro-democracy uprisings of 2011. But Tunis returned a limited diplomatic mission to Syria in 2017.

Saied had previously announced that his government would strengthen ties with Syria, and in February he decided to raise the level of Tunisian diplomatic representation in Damascus, declaring that "the issue of the Syrian regime is an internal matter that concerns Syrians alone."

The Tunisian announcement comes as Saudi Arabia reportedly plans to invite Assad to an Arab League summit in Riyadh on 19 May, a move that could cement...

Were spewing a torrent of waste and pollution that is affecting our environment, our economies, and our health, warns UN Secretary-General Antnio Guterres. Credit: Athar Parvaiz/IPS

And straight to the facts:

  • Every minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean.
  • If food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • More than 75% of all electronic waste is not safely managed.
  • Resource extraction is responsible for half of the worlds carbon emissions.
  • The amount of municipal solid waste generated globally could rise from around 2.24 billion tons to 3.88 billion tons by 2050.
  • 80% of marine pollution originates on land.

One billion tons of food in the garbage

The waste sector contributes significantly to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution.

Just take the shocking case of food. Every year, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems.

Such an unimaginable waste of food in a world of...

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori landing at RAF Brize Norton military airbase, UK, following their release 17 March 2022 (Reuters)

Anoosheh Ashouri, a British-Iranian former detainee, said he lost "almost five years" of his life in prison in Iran after the UK government was accused of missing early opportunities to secure his release.

A report by the UK parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on state hostage diplomacy was published on Tuesday, in which a cross-party group of MPs said significant suffering was imposed on Ashouri and fellow detainee Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliff by the government's refusal to initially accept the terms which eventually led to their release in March 2022.

Ashouri, a businessman, was arrested in 2017 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2019 for spying for Israel and two years for acquiring illegitimate wealth", claims he denies.

British-Iranian aid worker Zaghari-Ratcliffe was detained in Iran in 2016 on spying charges. Both were released in 2022 after the British government agreed to pay off a 400m historical debt owed to Iran for the purchase of tanks.

Evidence gathered by the committee, however, suggested the terms offered for their release were no different when negotiations were under way in 2017, and there was little to justify not having secured their freedom then.

I returned to the States from my six-month-long Europe trip in March, a day after my 30th birthday. After a brief stop in Providence, Rhode Island, I headed to Austin, Texas, where I would house and dog sit for friends for a few months while they traveled. Freshly immersed in waves of re-entry, or reverse culture shock, I spent most of my days working, grieving not being in Europe anymore, and debating leaving immediately on the next available flight back to Paris.

But I also spent a lot of time raging against Austins car dependence. In the (lovely) house where I stayed, there was no way to access grocery stores or cafes on foot or by using the bike in the garage; all errands required using the car generously left behind at my disposal. I was so grateful for the car and I know historically, this amazing feat of technology was intended to enhance my personal sense of freedom, but in all my life I had never felt less free.

Cairo Ojougboh Recounts Why APC Lost Election In Delta State "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

LAGOS APRIL 4TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The National Coalition for Peace and Unity (NCPU) has said the way the deputy senate president, Barr Ovie Omo-Agege, manages the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State informed why the party lost the governorship election in the state.

Cairo Ojougboh, the protem secretary of NCPC, said in a release that the issue Omo-Agege had with him was because he speaks the truth.

Ojougboh, who said the intention of Omo-Agege was to cow members in the state and make them his stooges, added that his actions during the governorship election in Delta where some electoral officers were held hostage, didnt conform with the position of a number seven citizen in the country.

While citing Section 182 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to buttress his point, he urged his supporters to go about their normal businesses and ignore the frustration of the deputy senate president.

At my age I will not be afraid to speak the truth. The tickets for senatorial, House of Representatives and governorship were bought by Omo-Agege and he gave them to whoever he wanted, his expulsion from the party cannot stand.

The former Reps member described his expulsion by Omo-Agege as kangaroo expulsion, saying the social media expulsion doesnt need a reply, but was dead on arrival as he said that is Omo-Ageges way,

How (Not) To Interpret Far-Right Symbols "IndyWatch Feed War"

Theres a good chance youve seen a photo like this before: a man with a shaved head and a black jacket faces away from the camera. Hes got a swastika tattooed on the back of his head as a Nazi flag flutters in the background.

Its the kind of default image we often have of when we think of the far-right obvious, identifiable and recognisable. Thats why this exact photo has been the cover image for so many articles about the far-right around the world. No matter that the image itself is from a very specific context, when a handful of neo-Nazis protested outside a Holocaust memorial centre in Illinois, USA back in 2009.

But its seldom this straightforward to identify symbols the far-right uses, let alone identify members of far-right groups or advocates of such ideologies solely because of the symbols they use.

For every culture, symbols of any kind matter. They evoke emotions in us, from the positive to the negative and the simple to the complex.

Of course, this certainly doesnt just exist in the context of far-right extremism. Think of the kinds of symbols in your life that you react to and the national, cultural, or subcultural contexts you come from.

Maybe its a symbol youre quite literally attached to, tattooed on your body. Maybe its a symbol that angers you to the point where you feel your identity is threatened. Maybe its somewhere in between. You feel a bond, some sense of community with those who view and react to these symbols in the same way.

So symbols mean different things to different people, at different times and in different contexts. Theyre not static, nor are they usually as simple to interpret as the swastika tattooed on the back of that neo-Nazis head. They have multiple levels of meaning, even contradictory ones. This is particularly the case for the far-right, who use symbols in deliberately coy and confusing ways that make it more difficult to pin down who they are and what they believe in.

In her 2020 book, the US sociologist and expert on the far right Cynthia Miller-Idriss called this technique game-playing coded messages laced with ambiguity, irony and humour with which the far-right not only troll their perceived opponents, but help carry extremist ideas into the mainstream.

Chile communities defy the desert by capturing increasingly scarce water "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

In the middle of an increasingly arid landscape, where Chiles Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, keeps expanding southward, a small forest less than a third the size of New Yorks Central Park is irrigated by water from fog, harvested by the rural community of Pea Blanca. Each day, they capture more than 1,500 liters (400 gallons) using 252 square meters (2,713 square feet) of fog collectors, installed 17 years ago in cooperation with the Un Alto en el Desierto Foundation, on a hill called Cerro Grande. Thanks to the water provided by the fog collectors, at least 30 native species of plants grow in the Cerro Grande Ecological Reserve in Chiles Coquimbo region. Some of these species are threatened, but thrive here despite the expansion of the desert, which is driven by overconsumption of water, land erosion and climate change. A barrier to desert expansion According to Chiles National Forest Corporation (CONAF), approximately 23% of the countrys total area is at risk of desertification. Various studies identify Coquimbo as the most affected region in the country. This is where the southern limit of the Atacama Desert was initially established, along the Copiap River. However, as the desert expands south, this boundary has become more blurred. The history of Pea Blanca is one of a thriving rural community of peasants, with hardworking people and important economic growth, says Daniel Rojas, a Pea Blanca native and, until last year, president of the community. Today, this prosperity is no more. TheseThis article was originally published on Mongabay

A coalition of 60 human rights and civil society organisations have called on the United Nations not to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, in a joint letter sent to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday.

The rights groups voiced their support for the UN's commitment to combating antisemitism, but urged it not to submit to pressure by some governments and organisations to endorse the controversial definition that has been misused to falsely label as antisemitic some criticism of Israel's policies and advocacy for Palestinian rights.

The letter, which was also sent to Under Secretary-General Miguel Angel Moratinos, said that while the adoption of this definition has often been framed by governments and institutions as a key step in fighting antisemitism, in practice, however, it "has often been used to wrongly label criticism of Israel as antisemitic".

This misuse, it added, "thus chill and sometimes suppress, non-violent protest, activism and speech critical of Israel and/or Zionism, including in the US and Europe".

The signatories to the letter include Human Rights Watch, the Israeli human rights group BTselem, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and dozens of other organisations.

Gerald Dawe on My Belfast and the passion that cries out of the ordinary. "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

In my recent contribution to a series of talks given at Lisburn Road Library for BBC NI, I recounted my upbringing in the Belfast of the 1950s and early 1960s. Here it is below

My Belfast doesnt exist anymore. It lives on in memories of another time basically, when I grew up in the city in the 1950s and 1960s. In what follows, Id like to think about that time and try and recapture what its like to revisit that past, in some reflections and extracts of poems of mine.

When I think of My Belfast Im thinking, firstly, of the decade of the 1950s. Belfast was still very much a post-war city then. The Blitz of 1941 remained etched in the landscape and even the words The War and The Blitz resonated throughout conversations without any self-consciousness. Before the war, youd hear, or After the Blitz. And My Belfast was a very spoken place too. People spoke intently to each other, after hand-shakes, often, or linked arms.

The world I recall of my upbringing was full-on, non-stop talking inside the house, and outside the house. People seemed to natter away in a questioning accent, looking directly at each other.

There was for me two worlds back then that sort of circled and intersected at times but stayed somewhat apart. Let me explain what I mean.

Inside the house the radio was never off except when we were all asleep. The accents that came brashly tumbling through that large wooden box in the corner of the downstairs back room sounded different. Whether it was the weekly fare of Workers Playtime, during the Fifties, the radio, and eventually, the squat little television which moved into its hallowed place a-top of the radio, carried the voices and styles of other places into our home.

There was the Billy Cotton Band Show with its clarion call of an opening, followed by the somewhat stilted conversation of the band leader with one of his troupe before the songs of Alan Breeze (what a glorious name for a singer) or Kathy Kay (The Fireside Girl) cast a kind of spell around the fireplace.

The radio was our link to the big world outside and BBC was the fulcrum of that compass. As a boy of the fifties, weekends were cast in predictable slots of regular programmes that were the backdrop to our young lives. This extended into the early Sixties.

Sunday night wouldnt have been Sunday night without Sing Something Simple featuring the Adam Singers. And even though my irreverent mother re-christened the programme Sing Something Sinful, she would often hum along from the pantry or recount to us her mothers (our grandmothers) rendition of this or that classic song of praise.

Our house was full of music. The piano sat in the front room throughout the fifties as my grandmother taught elocution, (voice production as it was called) and piano to a generation of children from Belfast and further afield.

Breaking Down Vaping Myths: Separating Fact From Fiction "IndyWatch Feed World"

Vaping has become a popular trend in recent years, with millions of people around the world using e-cigarettes as a way to quit smoking or simply as a hobby. However, it is often shrouded in myths and misconceptions, which can make it difficult for people to make informed decisions about whether or not to try it. In this article, well be breaking down some of the most common myths and separating fact from fiction.

Myth #1: Vaping is just as bad as smoking

Source: freepik.com

One of the most persistent myths about it is that its just as bad as smoking. This couldnt be further from the truth. While it does involve inhaling vapor, it doesnt contain the harmful tar and carbon monoxide found in cigarette smoke. In fact, a Public Health England report found that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking.

That being said, its important to remember that vaping isnt completely risk-free. Some e-cigarette liquids contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can be harmful to developing brains. In addition, there have been some reports of lung injuries associated with it. However, these cases are rare and are often linked to the use of illegal or unregulated vaping products.

Myth #2: Vaping is just for young people

Another common myth about it is that its only popular among young people. While its true that vaping has become increasingly popular among teenagers and young adults, its also popular among older adults who are trying to quit smoking.

In fact, many older adults find that it is a helpful tool for quitting smoking. Unlike traditional nicotine replacement therapies like gum and patches, perfect vape products allow users to simulate the experience of smoking while gradually reducing their nicotine intake. This can make it easier for smokers to quit for good.

Myth #3: Vaping is just as addictive as smoking

In February, Georgia lawmaker Josh Bonner introduced a bill that he hoped would fix a thorny problem that entangles tens of thousands of state residents in debt each year.

The Republican state representative from Fayetteville, a southern Atlanta exurb, aimed to close a loophole used by title lenders, who offer short-term cash to customers in exchange for a lien on their car title. The industry can currently charge triple-digit annual interest, more than three times what state law allows other financial companies.

Bonner, a military veteran and a church deacon, was outraged by the threat posed to consumers, especially military members and their families. In late February, federal regulators fined Savannah-based TitleMax, the countrys largest title lender, $15 million for multiple violations of the federal law that protects members of the armed forces from predatory, high-interest loans.

I wondered, How can this be legal, and who wouldnt want some common-sense reform? Bonner recalled.

Bonner, a past House floor leader who whipped votes for Gov. Brian Kemp, isnt an outsider to the corridors of power at the Georgia Capitol. Yet, within a month, his bill died in the House Banks and Banking Committee the sixth time in nearly two decades that Georgia Republicans tried and failed to erect better guardrails for the industry.

Food waste goes down the drain, but not down your pipes.

Now a Canadian startup has created a device that intends to provide a thirdand betteroption.

Report Back on Community Self-Defense Action in Sainte-Catherine "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Report on recent community mobilization in defense of a drag event in so-called Montreal. Originally posted to Montreal Antifascists.

The drag artist Barbada de Barbades was invited by the municipality of Sainte-Catherine, on Montrals south shore, to host a drag queen story hour on April 2, 2023, for twenty interested families from the area, the key goals being to encourage children to read, to demystify gender diversity, and to promote openness to difference. The event was to take place at the municipal library in Sainte-Catherine.

Barbada has hosted story hours since 2016 (and she has not been the only drag queen to do so), but it is only in recent years and in a particularly apparent way in recent months that a section of the local far-right adjacent conspiracy theory milieu has had a bee in its bonnet about the issue, under the combined influence of the conservative evangelical right and the anti-protocol conspiracy milieu that coalesced around the so-called freedom convoy. This anti-drag hysteria is one element in a larger movement meant to demonize sexual and gender identity minorities, trans identities in particular, on the basis of a variety of conspiracy fantasies, including, for example, the grooming panic, pedosatanism (a key theme in the QAnon milieu), and, in some particularly extreme cases, the racist and antisemitic great replacement theory. This fundamentally far-right transphobic movement has, at this point, made legislative and institutional headway in the US.

In this case, it was the anti-protocol militant Franois Amalega Bitondo, best known for his shenanigans during the COVID-19 pandemi...

The number of layoffs is reported to be relatively small compared to the tens of thousands of roles eliminated at competitors Google, Amazon, and Meta.

It was bound to happen eventually. The widespread layoffs sweeping across the tech industry are finally hitting Apple. According to a report from Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the matter, Apple will eliminate roles in its corporate retail teams. To be clear, these are not retail employee roles, such as those who work in Apple retail stores. Rather they are corporate jobs at Apple whose roles involve overseeing Apple retail workers of some kind.

Australia isnt a real nation, its a US military base with kangaroos - article by Caitlin Johnstone "IndyWatch Feed World"

One of the many, many signs that Australia is nothing more than a US military and intelligence asset is the way its government has consistently refused to intervene to protect Australian citizen Julian Assange from political persecution at the hands of the US empire.

In a new article titled , The Guardian quotes Australias foreign minister as saying, We are doing what we can, between government and government, but there are limits to what that diplomacy can achieve. Wong said this when asked if Prime Minister Anthony Albanese discussed the worlds most famous with the US president and British prime minister when he met with them together two weeks ago.

Wong whether her governments leader had raised the issue with his supposed US and UK counterparts, repeating instead the same shes been since Labor took over: that the Assange case has dragged on long enough and should be brought to a close. Which if you listen carefully isnt actually a statement in favour of releasing the WikiLeaks founder or blocking extradition its just saying the case should be concluded hastily, one way or another.
