Sweden's right-wing government abandons green energy agenda, passes bill to build nuclear power plants "IndyWatch Feed World"

Sweden's parliament on Tuesday adopted a new energy target, giving the right-wing government the green light to push forward with plans to build new nuclear plants in a country that voted 40 years ago to phase out atomic power. Changing the target to "100% fossil-free" electricity, from "100% renewable" is key to the government's plan to meet an expected doubling of electricity demand to around 300 TwH by 2040 and reach net zero emissions by 2045. "This creates the conditions for nuclear power," Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said in parliament. "We need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system." Comment: Her comments highlight how the plans of other Western government's are creating an unstable, dangerously inefficient and insufficient, energy system.

Miners vs NASA: Its A Nevada Showdown "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Mining projects are approved or disapproved based on all kinds of reasons. There are economic concerns, logistical matters, and environmental considerations to be made. Mining operations can be highly polluting, or they can have outsized effects on a given area by sheer virtue of the material they remove or the byproducts they leave behind.

For a proposed lithium mining operation north of Las Vegas, though, an altogether stranger objection has arisen. NASA has been using the plot of land as a calibration tool, and it doesnt want any upstart miners messing with its work.

Godson Brume Out Of World Championships In Budapest For Missing Flight "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Godson-Brume

LAGOS JULY 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Nigerias most successful sprinter this season, Godson Brume, may have been shut out of Team Nigerias squad to the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, following his absence at the ongoing national trials in Benin City, Edo State.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had declared a few days ago that any athlete, who failed to attend the national trials should consider himself/herself out of the team to Budapest.

The event started inside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, yesterday, with other foreign-based athletes in attendance, but Brume was nowhere to be found.

It was learnt yesterday that Godson Brume missed his flight four times. An official of the AFN told The Guardian after the morning session yesterday that Brumes absence means he is out of the team to Budapest.

We are very strict about it, the official said. This is not the first time Godson Brume is doing this. How can he miss his flight four times? We were told his school keeps paying money to renew the flight, yet he missed the opportunity. That shows his level of unseriousness.

It was the same attitude during the Commonwealth Games. We will hold a meeting later, but I am afraid he is out of our team to the World Championships.

Explaining her brothers absence from Benin, the sprinters older sister, World Championships silver medalist, Ese Brume, said Godson should not be blamed entirely for his no-show.

He got to Washington, but could not fly to Nigeria due to some issues. He didnt miss his flight four times. He has been communicating with AFN and I just pray they will have reason to allow him.

He had problems getting across to me, while I was on my way to Sweden for the Diamond League. I have booked another ticket for him and he is airborne to Nigeria to get his visa for World Championships, Ese stated.

Brume defeated world silver medalist and multiple Olympians at the LSU Alumni Gold, clocking a brilliant 9.97s (2.3), making him the first Nigerian sprinter to run a sub-10s time this season.

Brume captained Team Nigeria to the 2021 World U-20 Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, where the nations athletes won some gold medals. He later gained a student-athlete scholarship to study at the Louisiana State University (LSU).

2 dead in flash floods in Cotabato, Philippines "IndyWatch Feed World"

Heavy rains spawned by thunderstorms brought about by easterlies triggered flash floods that killed two residents in President Roxas town, Cotabato province, on Tuesday night, a local official said on Wednesday. President Roxas Vice Mayor Jaime Mahimpit said the bodies of Luzviminda Dubria, 69, and Ging Ging Fortunado, 44, a person with disability, were found in separate areas in the rice fields of Sitio Upper Ipuan in Barangay Poblacion, at least a kilometer away from the area where they were last seen. Letecia Dubria, a relative of one of the victims, said a landslide hit Sitio Ipuan on Tuesday night, followed by the flash flood that hit the victims' houses. "We were aware that they were [swept] away by flood waters but we didn't know what to do. It was nighttime and the current was very strong, so we never ventured out," Dubria told the Inquirer.

History is cruel "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Putin is, apparently, a student of history who has learned one lesson: Russia will be saved not by pity but by cruelty. I wouldnt want to be in Yevgeny Prigozhins shoes right now, because Putin is probably planning to go all Peter the Great on him.

Russian leaders have always fashioned themselves as hideously cruel demi-gods, none more so than Putins hero Tsar Peter the Great, who went mano-a-mano with his own Prigozhin and an ersatz 17th century Wagner Group known as the Streltsy, a cadre of some 50,000 powerful soldier-tradesmen skilled in murder, embezzlement, and racketeering.

Although the Streltsy were sworn to protect the government, all the legitimized raping and pillaging made it difficult for them to decide who was in charge. Historian Robert Massie described them as a kind of collective dumb animal, never quite sure who was its proper master, but ready to rush and bite anyone who challenged its own privileged position.

And like Wagner Groups 25,000-50,000 Kremlin-sponsored mercenary soldiers, the Streltsy, whose chief concern was also making money, made the doomed move to knock off their boss. Peter tortured thousands of them and their wives and children to death, with the Streltsys Prigozhin, Major Karpakov, strapped to a spit and twirled over a fire.

Peter sent his personal physician Dr. Carbonari to ensure Karpakov was slow-roasted. Let my notes from the historians in Russias state archive describe what happened next: Karpakov was removed from the spit to rest before going back on the fireCarbonari accidentally left his knife in the cellKarparkov could no longer take the tortureUsed the knife to slit his throatBut he was too weak and failedCarbonari discovered him and he was returned to torture.

But Putin allowed Prigozhin and the Wagner Group to peacefully retire to Belarus, you might say. I suspect that one reason for that is that it will give Putin an excuse to annex Belarus next. If his army can survive Ukraine, that is.

Why Russia and the US will never go back to the pre-2022 state of affairs "IndyWatch Feed World"

There is an increasingly widespread view in Russia that the goal of the US - and the "collective West" it leads - is to achieve a "final solution" to the "Russian question." The goals are believed to be defeating Russia, wrecking its military potential, restructuring its statehood, reshaping its identity and possibly eliminating it as a state, in its current form. For a long time, this view remained on the periphery of foreign policy thinking. However, much has changed in the past year and a half. Today, this perception of the West's goals has gone mainstream. Indeed, it seems quite rational, when placed into the proper context. Meanwhile, Russia itself is pursuing a similar sort of policy towards the Ukrainian state, the existence of which in its former form and borders is perceived in Moscow as a key security challenge.

Preliminary Injunction Limiting Government Communications with Platforms Tackles Illegal Jawboning, But Fails to Provide Guidance on Whats Unconstitutional "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A July 4 preliminary injunction issued by a federal judge in Louisiana limiting government contacts with social media platforms deals with government jawboningurging private persons and entities to censor anothers speecha serious issue deserving serious attention and judicial scrutiny.

The First Amendment forbids the government from coercing a private entity to censor, whether the coercion is direct or subtle. This has been an important principle in countering efforts to threaten and  pressure intermediaries like bookstores and credit card processors to limit others speech.

But not every communication to an intermediary about users speech is unconstitutional. And the distinction between proper and improper speech is often obscure.

So, while the court order is notable as the first to hold the government accountable for unconstitutional jawboning of social media platforms, and appropriately recognizes the First Amendment right of persons to receive information online free of unlawful government interference, it is not the serious examination of jawboning issues that is sorely needed. The court did not distinguish between unconstitutional and constitutional interactions or provide guideposts for distinguishing between them in the future.

The injunction comes in a lawsuit brought by Louisiana, Missouri, and several individuals alleging federal government agencies and officials illegally pushed the platforms to censor content about COVID safety measures and vaccines, elections, and Hunter Bidens laptop, among other issues. The court sided with the plaintiffs, issuing a broad injunction that does not clearly track First Amendment standards.

Oddly, the injunction includes exceptions that permit some of the most concerning government interactions and indicates that the court may have been more concerned with the subject matter of the governments complaintsfor instance, posts encouraging vaccine hesitancythan with drawing a workable line on the governments conduct.

How Generative AI Can Be Combined With Causal AI To Transform DevOps Innovation "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

One way to achieve this is to combine GPTs with causal AIa precise and trustworthy type of AI that provides rich and accurate context, which is particularly valuable in cloud observability, analytics and automation.

Causal AI observes the actual relationships within a system, such as a multicloud technology stack, and delivers detailed and precise answers in near real time based on these observations. These answers enable users to discern the cause, type, severity, risk, impact and location of any issue flagged by the AI with very high precision based on real-time observed facts and their interdependencies.

In the future, DevOps teams can use automated prompt engineering to feed real-time data and causal AI-derived context to their GPT. As a result, the answers they receive will be more relevant, accurate and actionable.

Wolframs New Update Gives Developers Genius-level Generative AI "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

After being one of the first plugins to ever come to ChatGPT, Wolfram has now gone all in on the LLM wave. In the latest version 13.3 update, the Wolfram language has added support for LLM technology, as well as integrating an AI model into the Wolfram Cloud.

This update comes on the heels of Wolfram slowly building the tooling for making the language LLM-ready. The update puts LLMs directly into the language with the introduction of an LLM subsystem for the language. It also builds on the LLM functions technology added in May, which packages AI powers into a callable function, with the new subsystem now being user-addressable.

With these new updates, developers have a whole new way of interfacing with their data. This approach combines Stephen Wolframs idea of natural language programming along with the Wolfram languages symbolic programming, creating a force to be reckoned with. Whats more, with the Wolfram language API, this can be plugged in to larger systems, delivering amazing power through a natural language interface.

A New Kind of Quantum Computer Could Be Built on The Strange Physics of Sound Waves "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

When you turn on a lamp to brighten a room, you are experiencing light energy transmitted as photons, which are small, discrete quantum packets of energy.

These photons must obey the sometimes strange laws of quantum mechanics, which, for instance, dictate that photons are indivisible, but at the same time, allow a photon to be in two places at once.

Similar to the photons that make up beams of light, indivisible quantum particles called phonons make up a beam of sound. These particles emerge from the collective motion of quadrillions of atoms, much as a stadium wave in a sports arena is due to the motion of thousands of individual fans. When you listen to a song, youre hearing a stream of these very small quantum particles.

Microbial Composition May Affect Lifespan "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

New research published in Scientific Reports suggests that microbes in the human gut and mouth can impact how long people live [1].

Bacteria and other microbes are often associated with diseases, but disease-causing microbes are only a minority. The majority of microbes are harmless or beneficial to humans, and we have millions of them living inside and outside us. Researchers refer to this community as the microbiota.

In previous research, scientists had noticed an association between microbiota and longevity [2]. However, the association between two things does not necessarily mean that one is causing the other. Therefore, in this new paper, researchers explored potential causal relationships between gut and mouth microbes composition and longevity in order to determine what compositions of microbiota result in increases or decreases in lifespan.

The people who have all the money have no art "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I have fond memories of taking my newly wed wife on a date to see Raiders of the Lost Ark at the theater in downtown Eugene, back in the day. I also have fond memories of putting my toddler son Alaric in a little red wagon and trundling him over the Willamette River pedestrian bridge to the Valley River Center mall to see the next Indiana Jones movieand also the Star War with all the Ewoks in it. These were movies made for entertaining fun, and were the background of my young adulthood. I think they also made my kids happy.

This past week, the latest Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, is playing here in Morris, and itll probably be playing next week as well. I havent felt even the most subtle stirrings of sentimentality to motivate me to go. The movie studios have milked me dry.

Also playing: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. I hope the theater is cleaning up its a co-op, and Im a member, but here I am, a guy who loves going to the movies, and Im not at all interested. Ive even got a free ticket tacked to the refrigerator, and the impulse just isnt there any more.

One reason is that Im aware that Indiana Jones is a terrible role model and a very bad scientist built on colonialist preconceptions, part of trope that has been thriving since H. Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The basic outlines of the adventure genre will be familiar to Indy fans, though its structure is heavily beholden to the colonialist politics of Haggards era: A brilliant White man, very often a professor, deploys personal reserves of cleverness, resilience and unrelenting determination in the service of exploration, discovery and resource extraction. That narrative template guides these stories even when the author attempts to push back on their ideological implications. Think, for example, about how the Indiana Jones films use the Nazi menace to distract from the fact that our hero is almost always appropriating the treasures of Indigenous or pre-colonial peoples. Its as if they felt obliged to remind us that theres always a worse White man, as a sort of alibi. It makes perfect sense, from this perspective, that Indiana Joness least-successful films are the ones that, like Temple of Doom, leave the Nazis out.

That contributes to my lack of interest, for sure. I feel a little bit guilty for enjoying a tale of a swashbuckling college professor fighting Nazis and also, unfortunately, looting non-white peoples history. Unfortunately, the pleasure part of guilty pleasure started to fizzle out as I also realized that every single movie is centered on garbage pseudoscience/pseudoarchaeology the Ark of the Covenant with its vengeful ghosts, an evil Hindu priest...

Turns Out Microsoft Chatbots Are, Indeed, a Passing Fad (Userbase Down Sharply) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

ChatGPT wasnt just hype, it was a marketing gimmick only made possible by massively underutilised (unsold) Azure capacity. Dont fall for the idea that ChatGPT was about LLMs. In short, it is about turning empty, money-losing server farms into advertising.

ChatGPT's Success Hits a Speed Bump With Decreasing Traffic: According to analytics firm Similarweb, in June there was a 9.7% decrease from the previous month in desktop traffic, and a 5.7% decrease in mobile traffic. The amount of time visitors spent on the website dropped by 8.5%. Senior Insights Manager at Similarweb, David Carr believes this is indicative of the chatbot's novelty beginning to wear off. These stats were accompanied by a decrease in app downloads, more specifically those of ChatGPT, says RBC Capital Markets analyst Rishi Jaluria. Despite their phenomenal growth, they now appear to be hitting a plateau. The decrease in traffic has been echoed by Bank of America analysts, who explain that visits to ChatGPT were down around 11% per week in June, to 51 million from the previous month. BofA analyst Justin Post believes that app downloads of both ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing (which includes a ChatGPT-based chatbot in the US) decreased 38%, with Bing's market share decreasing 40 basis points to around 2.8%. This was juxtaposed by Google which has increased their search engine market share very slightly, now over 92%.

Summary: As weve predicted all along, since the start of this year in fact, ChatGPT was all hype and it is going away; once the inertia is gone theres no comeback foreseen as rumours say the next massive round of Microsoft layoffs starts next week (can Microsoft distract from it?) and theres another downgrade

Charging by the mile for gas "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the US there is a tax on gasoline and the revenues from that are used to pay for road and bridge repairs and maintenance. But revenues from this tax have not been keeping pace with needs due to Congress not being willing to raise the tax to keep up with inflation coupled with more fuel efficient cars and electric cars on the road, resulting in less consumption of gas. While the latter is a good thing in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, it means that much-needed infrastructure repair is not being done.

One solution that is being proposed is to switch from a gas tax to a mileage tax where people would be charged by the number of miles driven rather that the amount of gas consumed. This requires placing of a tracking device on the car and pilot projects have begun in several states, Oregon being the leader.

The federal government is about to pilot its own such program, funded by $125 million from the infrastructure measure President Joe Biden signed in November 2021.

So far, only three states Oregon, Utah and Virginia are generating revenue from road usage charges, despite the looming threat of an ever-widening gap between states gas tax proceeds and their transportation budgets. Hawaii will soon become the fourth. Without action, the gap could reach $67 billion by 2050 due to fuel efficiency alone, Boston-based CDM Smith estimates.

Doug Shinkle, transportation program director at the nonpartisan National Conference of State Legislatures, predicts that after some 20 years of anticipation, more than a decade of pilot projects and years of voluntary participation, making programs mandatory is the next logical step.

I had one of those mileage device in my car for about six months a few years ago. It came from my insurance company and it was used to determine how many miles I drove on average, as well as how I drove, so as to set my insurance rate based on my actual use. I had to plug it into my cars computer during that time.

There are many advantages to this system. It can be used to more finely tune rates and can be easily changed to meet changing needs and conditions.

[San Jose State Universitys Mineta Transportation Institute] has conducted national surveys every year since 2010 and found growing support for mileage-based fees, special rates for low-income drivers and rates tied to how much pollution a vehicle generates, she said.

It can also be used to control traffic in highly congested areas. For example, some cities like Singapore and London have a congestion charge for the central city that cars have to pay when they enter that region that seems to have been somewhat succe...

Leading US think tank admits Russia unlikely to ever run out of missiles "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | July 6, 2023

For approximately a year and a half, we have been listening to tall tales about Russia running out of munitions of various kinds due to its supposed inability to produce advanced weapons, particularly long-range missiles and other sorts of PGMs (precision-guided munitions). According to mainstream propaganda, Moscow is allegedly so desperate that it had to arm its soldiers with shovels and resort to the expropriation of washing machines, smartphones, laptops and other devices that contain microchips in order to maintain production. Such ludicrous claims would never be accepted by anyone remotely familiar with how advanced military technologies work.

However, they are an important segment of the rabidly Russophobic infowar that aims to present the Eurasian giant as supposedly technologically backward. And yet,  after Moscows long-range and tactical aviation, as well as naval and ground-based units, spent the entire special military operation (SMO) launching high-precision strikes by using advanced PGMs that quite literally nobody else has (the United States included), the mainstream propaganda machine simply had to admit something was seriously off with their assessment of Russias technological and industrial capacity. The latter should have been destroyed by Western sanctions close to a year and a half ago.

And yet, its still standing. The answer as to why this is the case was recently given by CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies), a Washington DC-based think tank that is among the most prominent ones in the US. According to their assessment, Moscow is extremely unlikely to run out of PGMs and other long-range high-precision weapons, either for itself or its numerous export customers. Somewhat surprisingly, with no ambiguity or sugarcoating, Ian Williams, a Fellow of the International Security Program and Deputy Director of the Missile Defense Project at CSIS, has made it perfectly clear that it would be unrealistic to expect Russia to ever run out of missiles.

The author further notes that Moscow will be able to continue building long-range PGMs, which will enable it to sustain constant long-range strike capability, despite sanctions and export restrictions. And while the CSIS repo...

Questioning the appropriateness of having an Irish academic who saw fit to become a Dame of the British Empire chair a forum on Irish neutrality is a reasonable position to adopt. Britain is, after all, a leading member of NATO, and indeed one of its more belligerent members. Does this not pre-empt that debate just a little bit or at least create the appearance that it might?

Finn McRedmond accuses the President of failing to consult his electorate about whether they wished him to comment on the UK failing to properly remember the worst excesses of the British empire. Quite apart from the fact the President has no means of consulting his electorate, his comments were quite apt. Nigel Farage had been in Ireland urging the Irish people to follow the UK out of the EU because EU membership was, in his view, comparable to colonialism under British rule.

It may be the convention in Britain for the King, as head of state, not to comment on public affairs. But President Higgins, unlike the King, has a popular mandate from the Irish people to speak on their behalf. Anyone who voted for the President not realising he has a proclivity to make wide ranging remarks on all manner of issues of public concern had not been paying attention. We voted for Michel D. Higgins in the full knowledge of his many foibles. We did not want a stuffed dummy.

An Indigenous revival in the Pan Amazon "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The explosive growth of protected area networks was accompanied by the simultaneous recognition of the territorial rights of Indigenous people, an ongoing process that has yet to conclude. There are approximately 2.5 million Indigenous people living in the Pan Amazon; about two-thirds live within their territories, which total between 170 and 220 hundred million hectares. They have occupied and defended these territories for centuries; historically, they used armed resistance, but they now rely on civil disobedience and political activism. Being granted legal title or explicit use-rights to their homeland, however, does not signify an end to conflict. Indigenous communities must physically protect their land and its resources from timber thieves, gold miners and land grabbers, as well as wage regulatory battles to stop highway construction, petroleum exploration or the development of hydropower infrastructure. Indigenous people are the Amazons fiercest and most effective conservation advocates because the struggle for their territories is existential: if they lose their land, they will lose their identity and cease to exist as a people. They know this because they are the survivors of a holocaust. The Native Americans of the Pan Amazon have survived wave after wave of genocidal events that started with the colonization of the Western Hemisphere by the European powers in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Slavery, war and epidemic disease reduced their populations by an estimated ninety per cent by the mid decades of the nineteenth century. The prosperous communities that once populated the main stem of the Amazon River wereThis article was originally published on Mongabay

An Israeli court has acquitted the border police officer who was charged with manslaughter after he shot dead autistic Palestinian man Iyad al-Hallaq in May 2020.

The Jerusalem district court ruled on Thursday that the officer was acting in self-defence when he carried out the shooting of 31-year-old Hallaq.

Hallaq was in Jerusalems Old City on his way to a special needs school when the police officer shot him.

According to the court, the officer was forced to make a split-second decision in a dangerous situation, and taking risks "is an integral part of military activity".

The judges accepted the police officers claim of self-defence, saying that the officer made an honest mistake and did not know that Iyad was an innocent man with special needs".

The officer told the court that the incident lasted a few seconds and he was under the impression that a woman was about to be murdered.

Two weeks after the Wagner Groups armed rebellion against Vladimir Putin, the Russian Defence Ministry is yet to take full control of thousands of fighters and is struggling to get hold of offices and barracks even in Ukraine, amid a wave of desertions.

Three sources directly involved with the private military market, who are familiar with Wagners operations, told Middle East Eye that it would take at least a year for the defence ministry to get hold of the situation amid a lingering war in Ukraine that has heavily strained the Russian military, industry, and bureaucracy.

On 23 June, the Wagner Group, a private Russian paramilitary force, turned against Russias military leadership and began marching from Ukraine to Moscow.

The next day, with its fighters some 150km from the Russian capital, an agreement was struck that allowed Wagners chief Yevgeny Prigozhin to safely travel to Belarus in return for ending his mutiny.

Yet on Thursday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Prigozhin had travelled back to St Petersburg.

Onuesoke Calls For Location Of Foreign Visa Offices In Other Parts Of Nigeria "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

ONUESOKE.

LAGOS JULY 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain and former Delta State Gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has appealed to foreign embassies in Nigeria to  locate visa offices  in other  parts of Nigeria  instead of location  in Lagos and Abuja alone.

Onuesoke who made the appeal in a telephone chat with our correspondence from Germany where he is attending the climate change conference lamented that Nigerians who are located in the Northern and Niger Delta regions of Nigeria who want to do business with the foreign embassies are facing a lot of difficulties in accessing  the embassies  because of distance location.

He said in course of trying to access the foreign embassies that are located at  Abuja and Lagos they risk their lives in travelling long distance and incurred a lot of expenses in term of hotel bills and  other exigencies in the course of having any transaction to do with the foreign embassies.

For instance, Nigerians residing in Niger Delta Region, Northern states and other parts of the country that are not close to Lagos or Abuja where majority of the foreign embassies are located find it difficult and  inconvenience to  do  transaction  in term of obtaining visa or transact  other business because of the distance. They do not only risk their lives in travelling distance along the dangerous roads or waterways, they spend a lot of fund in transportation and hotel bills should they leave their distance abode to either Abuja or Lagos to the embassies.

Nigeria is a big country with large expand of both land and riverine areas.  For instance, someone who resides in Borno, Zamfara  or Sokoto in the North  and Ijaw communities in Niger  Delta Riverine area will have to travel  a long distance either through land or river to Lagos or Abuja before he  or she could do any business with the foreign embassies. Besides, he or she will have to spend huge amount in hotel bills and other exigencies, he disclosed.

The PDP Chieftain argued that such inconveniences and expenses could be avoided if the foreign embassies   establish offices  as  consulates in towns like  in Gombe, Borno, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Warri and Calabar  among others  to make it easy for those residing in those  areas to obtain visa or  do business with them.

He stated that although it will cost the foreign countries more financially to ex...

China Economy Enters the Post-Stimulus Era "IndyWatch Feed War"

Chinas economy, the worlds second-largest, is at a crossroads. Post-pandemic recovery has been less robust than expected, leading to mounting internal and external challenges. A shift in Chinas economic model seems inevitable, moving from a heavy reliance on economic stimulus to more sustainable, consumer-driven growth. This shift, however, raises fundamental questions about the efficacy of policy strategies employed over the past few decades.

For years, large-scale stimulus programs have fueled Chinas economic growth. In response to the 2008 financial crisis, China announced a $586 billion stimulus package, primarily invested in infrastructure and property markets. This government-led investment model provided short-term economic stability but also caused an explosion in debt and led to overcapacity in industries like steel, cement, and property.

Chinas response to economic slowdowns in 2012 and 2015 followed similar lines, with increased public spending, looser monetary policy, and directives encouraging lending to the corporate sector. These measures led to a further accumulation of corporate and local government debt.

Independent accuses Israel of unremitting inhumanity "IndyWatch Feed War"

Israel is stubborn, vengeful, and engages in unremitting inhumanity, according to an editorial  at the Independent but evidently written on behalf of the entire world (The world expects better of Israel than constant recourse to violence, July 4).

The piece is illustrated by one of the most morally obtuse and intellectually dishonest political cartoons related to the conflict that weve come across.  It compares Russias unprovoked war against Ukraine, in which over 9,000 civilians have been killed, to the IDFs two-day military operation in Jenin to erode the capacity of proscribed terrorist groups to launch attacks on Israeli civilians.

The Indy editorial begins with an egregious mischaracterisation of the military operation and a cliche:

If brutal military operations by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in Palestinian settlements [sic] were sufficient to end the conflict in the region, then the Middle East would have been at peace for decades. Plainly, it has not been and equally obviously, violence is begetting violence, as it always has.

Far from brutal, in two days of fighting in the densely packed terror 12 Palestinians were killed at least 10 of whom, and maybe all, were...

When the Reptilian Brain Drives the Political Bus "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Five percent of the people think; 10 percent of the people think they think; and the other 85 percent would rather die than think. Thomas A. Edison

The constant obsessing with Hunter Biden as if this man matters, given the very real threats our society faces what is that actually about? Well, more than mere tribalism or confirmation bias on the right. Its symptomatic of a deeper and broader illness.

To be sure, those who condemn Hunter Bidens behavior (and allege special treatment) seem to ignore the financial corruption, debauchery, and far worse by a legion of right-wing leaders, movement heroes, pastors, etc. where no accountability is typically the rule, not the exception. Including the children of the immediate past president, to say nothing of the former guy himself. As someone tweeted in response to a posting I did on Hunter derangement:

Hunter has never been in politics. Ivanka and Jared made 300+ million in salary as advisors not to mention 2 billion from the Saudis and why no one is investigating that is beyond me.

So, why make so much of Hunters offenses, which are really inconsequential in the greater scheme of things, and ever so slight in comparison with the monumental outrages of so many right-wingers?

What Lies Beneath

To find the answer to this mystery, we need to lift the lid on the human skull and have a look at the wiring inside. By wiring I refer to a specific feature of anatomy that may provide at least part of the explanation: the reptilian brain. Carl Sagan described it well:

Deep inside the skull of every one of us there is something like a brain of a crocodile which evolved tens of millions of years ago. It is a major source of our moods and emotions. On the outside, living in uneasy truce with the more primitive brains beneath, is the cerebral cortex [that part of the brain that thinks rationally]; civilization is a product of the cerebral cortex.

So, our civilized selves live in uneasy truce with our more primitive selves, an internal battle within each of us.

Our civilized selves evaluate the nuances and complexity of issues, and are comfortable with the uncertainties inherent in this rational process.

On the other hand, our primitive selves crav......

New measurement of Yellowstone magma reservoir suggests upper part is 28% melted rock "IndyWatch Feed World"

A small team of geologists and seismologists from the University of Utah, Salt Lake, the Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taipei and the University of New Mexico has studied the content of the Yellowstone magma reservoir and reports differences from prior measurements. Yellowstone National Park is a U.S. national park located in parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. It is known for its beautiful vistas and geothermal features, such as the Old Faithful geyser. These features exist due to a massive reservoir of magma situated beneath the park. Prior research has shown that over the past 16.5 million years, the hotspot beneath the park has led to a series of volcanic eruptions, leaving behind multiple calderas. The last major eruption in the area is believed to have occurred approximately...

Is Fast Fashion Making Us Sick? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

On a recent spring afternoon, journalist Alden Wicker was examining a neon orange purse at H&M. The price tag read $14.99, but instead of listing materials, it simply said vegan. She raised an eyebrow. At Wickers request, a store clerk looked up the materials: polyurethane and polyester. Plastics.

For the last decade, Wicker has been covering the dirty side of fast fashion from its contribution to the climate crisis and greenwashing to multi-level marketing schemes. She founded the popular blog EcoCult in 2013 and has become an authority on sustainable fashion.

Wickers new book, To Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick, examines the public health impacts of chemically-treated fabrics and synthetic fibers. She spent two years interviewing.

She found that fashion is rife with toxic chemicals, like formaldehyde and chromium, which are both carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting polyfluoroalkyl substances (also known as PFAS, or forever chemicals), linked to infertility and other health issues. And despite the potential harm, she discovered that the US has done little to protect consumers from the clothes they wear.

Were allowing chemicals to be poured indiscriminately into the environment, but were also bringing them into our homes, Wicker said. The effects of these chemicals on te......

One family femicide every four days

Since July 2021, at least 165 women have been killed by their male family members in Iran, putting the average number of so-called honour killings in this period at an alarming one murder every four days.

The Shargh daily, in an investigative report, probed the cases and wrote that most murders took place in the Tehran province, contrary to popular belief that femicides are more common in rural areas and small cities.

On Wednesday, the daily reported that during the past two years, 41 murders took place in Tehran province.

The report added that these numbers only revealed the official case data, as experts believe the actual numbers are much higher.

"This number does not include the several cases in which women were forced by their family members to commit suicide or the cases in which women decided to end their lives to end domestic violence or child marriages," wrote the daily.

The report added that 108 of these women were killed by their husbands, 17 by their brothers, 13 by their fathers, nine by th...

Hailstorm affects more than 20,000 hectares of crops in Valencia and Castellon, Spain "IndyWatch Feed World"

The historic hailstorm in Valencia yesterday, with ice stones the size of nuts, had a strong impact on a large area of crops in numerous areas of the provinces of Valencia and Castellon. According to an initial estimate made by the Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA), "the hailstorm affected more than 20,000 hectares of agricultural land. It caused variable damage to the crops, affecting 100% of the production in some fields. The storm affected the Coastal, l'Horta, and Alto Palancia regions the most. The crops that suffered the most losses were citrus, kaki, almond, and olive crops." "In the Coast region, the storm caused serious damage in hundreds of farms in Montesa and Vallada. There are oranges, mandarins, and kaki fruits that were struck six to seven times by the hailstorm. In the most severe cases, producers lost the entirety of their crop and the hail even caused damage to the plants that could weaken them and reduce next year's productivity. Sun Breaks Out With Record Number of Sunspots, Sparking Solar Storm Concerns "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The sun hasn't produced this many sunspots in a single month since 2002:

The sun produced over 160 sunspots in June, the highest monthly number in more than two decades.

The data confirm that the current solar cycle, the 25th since records began, is picking up intensity at a much quicker pace than NASA and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasted, sparking concerns of severe space weather events in the months and years to come.

While the space agencies predicted a maximum monthly number of sunspots during the 25th solar cycle's maximum to reach a modest 125, the star is now on a trajectory to peak at just under 200 monthly sunspots, and some scientists think this peak may arrive in just one year.

[...] And contrary to the original NASA and NOAA forecast, this maximum might get rather fiery. More sunspots means not only more solar flares but also more coronal mass ejections, powerful eruptions of charged particles that make up solar wind. And that can mean bad space weather on Earth. Intense bursts of solar wind can penetrate Earth's magnetic field and supercharge particle's in Earth's atmosphere, which triggers mesmerizing aurora displays but also causes serious problems to power grids and satellites in Earth's orbit.

Researchers create highly conductive metallic gel for 3D printing "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers have developed a metallic gel that is highly electrically conductive and can be used to print three-dimensional (3D) solid objects at room temperature. The paper, Metallic Gels for Conductive 3D and 4D Printing, has been published in the journal Matter.

3D printing has revolutionized manufacturing, but were not aware of previous technologies that allowed you to print 3D metal objects at room in a single step, says Michael Dickey, co-corresponding author of a paper on the work and the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University. This opens the door to manufacturing a wide range of electronic components and devices.

To create the metallic gel, the researchers start with a solution of micron-scale particles suspended in water. The researchers then add a small amount of an indium-gallium alloy that is liquid metal at room temperature. The resulting mixture is then stirred together.

The team found that the streamlined cell can evolve just as fast as a normal celldemonstrating the capacity for organisms to adapt, even with an unnatural genome that would seemingly provide little flexibility.

Details about the study can be found in a paper featured in Nature. Roy Z. Moger-Reischer, a Ph.D. student in the Lennon lab at the time of the study, is first author on the paper.

Delta Community Warns Herders Against Grazing Of Cows In Their Land "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

DELTA COMMUNITY 2

Cattle invade school field in Alihiagwu community in Ika South local government area of Delta State

LAGOS JULY 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Leaders in Alihiagwu, an agrarian community in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State have banned grazing of cows in their area over wanton destruction of their farmlands.

Speaking with Journalists after a recent meeting with the representatives of cattle herders, the Odionwere of Alihiagwu, Pa. Ekpenisi Adaghon said farmers in the community have suffered from persistent destruction of their farmlands and crops by cows.

Pa. Adaghon stated that Alihiagwu is an agrarian community and as such the livelihood of the people depended solely on their farm produce.

According to him, I am saying it again that we the people of Alihiagwu have had enough of herdsmen coming into our community to invade our farmland.

We are saying no to cattle rearing. Firstly, we do not want to die of hunger by allowing herdsmen to take over our farmlands, and to save ourselves from any impending crisis between aggrieved farmers whose farmland are destroyed by the cattle rearers which may lead to bloodshed and death.

He added that the ban on cattle rearing is to further enforce the Delta State anti-grazing law, saying that their farmland is not a place for grazing.

The ban on rearing of cattle in Alihiagwu is with immediate effect. We are peaceful people and for the last time appealing to cattle rearers to steer clear of our community. It is not a threat but refusal by the herdsmen not to comply may not be good.

We have decided to make our resolution known to the public that we dont want cattle rearing in our community any longer and to let them know as eye witnesses of our decision. Therefore, we are calling on the state government and security agencies to come to our aid before herdsmen destroy the existing peace in Alihiagwu community.

Demographic benefits have been real but nationalism must bring its own theory of government to bear on the future "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Act always so as to increase the number of choices.
Heinz von Foerster

Everyone (I hope) has a teacher upon whom they look back fondly and with gratitude for the good influence their teaching had on the rest of their lives. I can think of three, my P1 teacher Miss Farrell, who lulled me into the idea school would be fun.

My O level Maths teacher Frank Kelly who taught me theres never any such thing as a stupid question. He even persuaded me I could study Statistics for a few months before the cognitive dissonance kicked in and I refocused on more basic stuff.

The one who left the greatest mark was my P7 teacher Brian Greene, who treated us ten and eleven year olds like we had a brain and could think very well for ourselves. I have a vague memory of him posing us a question about a frog jumping across a table.

The question was as follows: if each time it jumps the frog in question makes only half the distance it did before**, how many leaps will it take before it gets to the other side of the table. It turns out it was a very useful exposure to logic at a young age.

Greene was teaching us to think for ourselves and not take everything presented to us at face value. Of course, the answer is obvious now, but the introduction of the idea of infinite attempts to reach the other side only served to befuddle our thinking.

Youd think it would be obvious, but in my 21 years on Slugger Ive seen so many logical fallacies warp public thinking its pretty clear to me now that what we learned back in P7 was an invaluable insight as to why empirical observation matters.

The frog of course never makes it: his progress impeded by his ongoing determination to get there combined with a radical loss of ability to make the short fall between himself and his ultimate goal. His goal becomes his gaol (see what I did there?).

There are a lot smarter people than me narrating the public space in Northern Ireland, but Im puzzled why so many clever folk think the current [sectarian? Ed] pitch for a United Ireland is anything other than a metaphorical frog radically losing power.

Im not suggesting this out of some enmity towards the idea of a united Ireland. As someone whose family originates from both sides of partition (and the language divide) it feels like a pretty natural state of affairs for me personally.

But democratically and demographically, the evidence points in the opposite direction. This is not just a problem for political nationalism (though clearly it is pretty deeply), but it is also problematic for backward looking political unionism.

Ill let Simon Riley (better known as Mainland Ulsterman in these parts) who has...

But employment is supposed to be our bright spot. Turner Classic Movies Airs a Film With Pirated Subtitles "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

karagargaFor millions of people around the world, subtitles are the only way to enjoy media in foreign languages. For the deaf and hard of hearing, they are absolutely essential.

Nowadays, most large streaming platforms and broadcasters are aware of the importance of offering a range of subtitle options to their viewers.

On pirate sites, the situation is no different. Theres a decades-long tradition of fansubbing which sees volunteers work together to supply homebrew subtitles to the masses. In many cases, these volunteers beat official channels, especially for non-mainstream content.

There are licensed and official sources for subtitles, but every now and then, we see fan-made subtitles appear on legal platforms. This is exactly what happened a few days ago, in a rare encounter between two of the largest cinephile platforms.

Jordan has blocked the popular satirical news site AlHudood in a move denounced as censorship and an attack on freedom of expression.

The Arabic language website, whose name translates as "the limits", was founded in 2013 and is often compared to the satirical American news website, The Onion.

Jordanian authorities have not yet explained why the website has been blocked in the country.

Commenting on the move, staff from AlHudood highlighted the increasing lack of freedom in Jordan and defended the website, saying that over the years it had grown to cover not just Jordan, but the entire Middle East and North Africa region.

"It's really unfortunate to see freedoms of all sorts deteriorating constantly in Jordan, and we worry about the effect this will have, not just on us as a publication but on journalists, writers, and citizens alike in what they can produce and what they can consume," a staff member, who asked not to be named, told The New Arab.

The Media Is High on Cocaine in the White House "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

From time to time, the White House press corps reminds us that it does not primarily consist of journalists but rather a bunch of self-indulgent influencers eager to build a following. In their minds, they may be playing the leading role in a tale of heroic reporters who uncover grave misdeeds. In reality, they are nothing more than well-compensated performance artists and, even though they have unique access to those in power, real journalism is done elsewhere.

That dynamic was on full display Wednesday, when the press corps collectively demonstrated why White House reporters are essentially worthless.

Keep in mind that there is a lot happening in the world.

There is the ongoing war in Ukraine, and there are reports suggesting that a Russia-controlled nuclear power plant in the country could be sabotaged to unleash a catastrophe on its people.

There was a temporary injunction that prevents several government agencies and officials from communicating with social media companies, which might hamper efforts to stop the spread of misinformation.

There was a string of mass shootings across the US throughout the holiday weekend.

And, while Americans were murdering each other, Israelis were killing Palestinians in a military operation in the West Bank.

In addition, Swedens prime minister was in town at a time when his country is trying to join NATO.

Then, following the leaks of highly classified documents, the Pentagon is changing how such information can be accessed.

Finally, some cocaine was found in the West Wing.

Would you like to hazard a guess which of these major events the press corps focused on in Wednesdays briefing with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre?

In total, reporters asked about 50 questions or sets of questions (even after analyzing the transcript, the exact number is hard to come by because there are some cases in which reporters are primarily grandstanding without actually asking anything).

More than 20 of these questions were about the cocaine being found in the West Wing. One would have been fine since this is clearly a thing that happened and merits some sort of explanation from the White House. It is, after all, a workpla...

Writing It Right: Reflections on Seven Years of Neighborhood Newsletters "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Stephen Phillips/Unsplash.)

It all started with a pawn shop. One afternoon years ago, I got an email that was making its way around the neighborhood. There was a notice posted on a nearby building, announcing an application for a pawn shop. It needed a conditional use permit and a variance, and the deadline to support or oppose it was only a few hours away, as the board deciding on the application was meeting that very night.

Our neighborhood already had three payday loan places within just a few blocks of each other, and the last bank had up and moved years ago. We didnt need another predatory lending institution; a pawn shop seemed like a step backward.

Beginning that day and over the next couple of weeks, my husband and I were part of a campaign of neighbors to stop the approval of the pawn shop. After many late nights of meetings and research, we went with a big delegation of people to city hall and successfully convinced the council to deny the application. It was the first time in my life Id been involved in anything like that, and it was downright exhilarating.

When we won our cause, we were keen to keep the momentum going. We met so many great people, made connections with other stakeholders in our area, and got to know our city councilor and provincial representative, all in just a few weeks. Wed had so many conversations about what change we wanted to see in our neighborhood, and it seemed a shame to stop talking now. This is how I found myself sending out an email to this collection of 20-odd people with the subject line: No pawn shopwhat next?

Delta Monarch Calls For Execution Of  Corrupt Public Office Holders "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Dein-of-Agbor-Benjamin-Ikenchukwu-Keagborekuzi-1

LAGOS JULY 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The Dein of Agbor Kingdom in Delta State, Benjamin Keagborekuzi, has proposed the death penalty for any public officer in Nigeria, found guilty of embezzling and diverting public funds.

The monarch gave the advice on Turesday while speaking with journalists at his palace, in Agbor. Keagborekuzi, who was apparently disturbed by current suffering of Nigerians, said the country is retrogressing because public officers steal the wealth of the nation for personal purposes without accountability.

He said, henceforth, any public officer found guilty of embezzling public funds should be executed, because such a person opposes growth and development of the nation.

The monarch said: We need to start thinking about death penalty for public officers in Africa, who are found guilty of embezzling public funds. They are of no use to us; the country has suffered enough.

The Federal Government needs to tackle corruption strictly. We would be deceiving ourselves if we continue the way we are going. We cannot change the way government is run without stringent decision being taken. He, therefore, advised President Bola Tinubu to use his wealth of experience as former Lagos State governor to improve the nations economy.

The monarch also advised the President to appoint right people in government and give them free hand to drive development. He added: Good leadership without the right people in place will fail, just as wrong leadership with the right people in position will definitely succeed.

Biden Administration Files Notice of Appeal Against Social Media Censorship Collusion Ban "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Christina Maas | Reclaim The Net | July 5, 2023

The US Justice Department has formally filed a notice of appeal against a court ruling that prohibits federal agencies and officials from engaging in discussions with social media companies to censor speech on their platforms.

The ruling in favor of free speech, justified by First Amendment rights, has been met with consternation by the Biden Administration, which says it poses a restriction on their efforts to counter the dissemination of what it says is misinformation.

The appeal was submitted to the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans this past Wednesday, in response to an injunction imposed by US District Judge Terry Doughty, alongside a lengthy opinion on the case.

Judge Doughty asserted in his detailed ruling that the manner in which federal officials communicated with technology giants such as Twitter and Facebook about the removal or restriction of content specifically pertaining to Covid the 2020 election likely constituted a violation of First Amendment protections for US citizens.

Information, whether truthful or not, is not supposed to be in the purview of the government to police. Though, the Biden administration has attempted to defend its engagement with social media companies as a necessary approach to protecting public health and safety.

Conversely, the plaintiffs, who include the Republican attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana, contend that the federal governments communication with these companies amounted to a state-sanctioned censorship campaign.

In the initial ruling, Judge Doughty issued an injunction preventing a wide range of federal entities from engaging in communication with any social media company to urge, encourage, pressure, or induce the removal or suppression of speech.

However, the ruling does provide for certain exceptions. Notably, it permits government engagement with social media companies in instances involving criminal activity (including that which is election-related), national security concerns, or other threats to public security.

The appeal by the Justice Department marks a significant development in an ongoing legal matter that has far-reaching implications for the relationship between the government and social media platforms and the ability of the government to suppress speech.

I touched on this the other day when I was writing about Bidens inexcusable decision to appoint Elliott Abrams to a position in international relations, but the history of the last century has made it very clear that capitalists do not believe they can beat socialism, communism, or any other non-capitalist system without using authoritarian violence. Propaganda works, but the people can make their own propaganda and back it up with reality. That means that in the end, they always come back to violence. They assassinate leaders, they invade countries, they fund death squads and assist in genocides, they use debt traps backed by the threat of violence to keep the former colonies in line, and they use the full force of the government to suppress left-wing thought and political power within their own borders, all while claiming to value freedom:

See, like, if youre just in a small group of people, you probably get along just fine talking things out with each other and making compromises. This is how things work in my family of all adults, for example. Most friend groups are this way too.

This kind of breaks down when you have a much larger group. Maybe, *maybe* you could gather everyone in a small town together and have them hash out budgets and laws, but a big city? An entire nation?

The U.S. Banned Farmers From Using a Brain-Harming Pesticide on Food. Why Has It Slowed a Global Ban? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. This story was co-published with the Guardian.

On his first day in office, President Joe Biden announced that his administration planned to scrutinize a Trump-era decision to allow the continued use of chlorpyrifos, a pesticide that can damage childrens brains. And with great fanfare, the Environmental Protection Agency went on to ban the use of the chemical on food.

Ending the use of chlorpyrifos on food will help to ensure children, farmworkers, and all people are protected from the potentially dangerous consequences of this pesticide, the head of the EPA, Michael Regan, said in his announcement of the decision in August 2021. EPA will follow the science and put health and safety first.

Yet when officials from around the world gathered in Rome last fall to consider whether to move forward with a proposed global ban on the pesticide, chlorpyrifos had a surprising defender: a senior official from the EPA.

Karissa Kovner, a senior EPA policy adviser, is a key leader of the U.S. delegation at a United Nations body known as the Stockholm Convention, which governs some of the worst chemicals on the planet. Chlorpyrifos is so harmful that the American government not only banned its use on food but also barred the import of fruits and vegetables grown with it. But Kovner made it clear that the U.S. was not ready to support taking the next step through the convention to provide similar protections for the rest of the world.

At the meeting, Kovner questioned whether the pesticide is harmful enough to merit being included on the Stockholm Conventions list of banned and restricted chemicals. Some attendees said Kovners intervention ultimately stalled the effort.

Her role is essentially to slow the process down and stop things from getting listed, said Meriel Watts, a New Zealand-based scientist and pesticide expert who attended the Rome meeting and has participated in the Stockholm Convention process for years.

In an interview with ProPublica earlier this year, Kovner said that those who see her as unconcerned about public health and the environment misundersta...

The European Patent Office (EPO) is Being Crushed to Pieces and EPO Staff Isnt Gullible Enough or Sufficiently Blind to That "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Summary: Todays video attempts to explain just how awful things have become in Europes second-largest institution and one of the worlds biggest patent offices; its governed by unqualified people who compensate for this inadequacy by breaking laws, bribing the media, and even bribing the people who elect them; recently, the European Union and Commission doubled down on their support for this

THE video above is a bit longer than usual, but its not repetitive.

This is a video regarding three of last night's posts a set of closely-connected posts concerning the European Patent Office (EPO) (theres lots more coming later today); the good news is that staff is very well aware of whats going on (it also speaks about that despite the risk of reprisal), but the bad news is that European press ignores this highly concerning crisis, which is now expanding to the European Union through the illegal and unconstitutional court, the UPC (European publishers are moreover being bribed to promote it and to constantly lie about it, so its a crisis of the media too!).

One person told me earlier this week that itd be great if someday the mainstream press or the politicians would notice the problems caused by/at the EPO. I contacted many European politicians over the years and Id say its absolutely useless unless one does so just to demonstrate just how useless they can be.

Yes, were talking about Soviet tactics here, except in Russia journal...

Leaked photographs appear to show the leader of the Russian Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin in various disguises as officials and figures from Middle Eastern and African countries where the mercenary group is active.

The images first appeared on Russian Telegram channels, shortly after state media published footage and photographs of armed officers raiding Prigozhin's mansion in St Petersburg.

The mercenary leader oversaw a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin two weeks ago.

Wagner fighters crossed into Russia from Ukraine and claimed to have captured army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia on 24 June, before advancing northwards towards the capital Moscow.

Prigozhin called off the rebellion hours later, and it was announced that he would be exiled to Belarus as part of a truce agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin and mediated by Minsk.

Exposed, the multi-billion-dollar illusion of HIV: Part 3 "IndyWatch Feed War"

Readers of TCW will be familiar with Neville Hodgkinsons critical reporting of the Covid crisis since December 2020, notably his expert, science-based informed alarm about the mass vaccine rollout, so absent from mainstream coverage. What they may be less aware of is the international storm this former Sunday Times medical and science correspondent created in the 1990s by reporting a scientific challenge to the HIV theory of Aids, presaging the hostile response to science critics of Covid today. In this series he details findings that form the substance of his newly updated and expanded book, How HIV/Aids Set the Stage for the Covid Crisis, on the controversy. It is available here. You can read Part 1 of this series here and Part 2 here.

By Neville Hodgkinson | TCW Defending Freedom | July 5, 2023

When Covid was first perceived as a threat to public health in 2020, many governments rejected advice that protection should focus on those most at risk. They jeopardised the health and lives of millions through repeated lockdowns and the reckless rollout of experimental mRNA injections. In the panic surrounding the arrival of the genetically engineered SARS-CoV-2, unnecessary deaths occurred as a result of inappropriate forced ventilation, neglect of antibiotic treatment of associated bacterial infections, and the banning of effective medical therapy such as ivermectin.

Awareness of the scientific hubris that brought Covid into being, and of the corruption and abuse of power that turned the viruss escape into a mega-crisis, has become widespread. The internet made it possible for critics to air data countering the official narratives, despite persist...

Tentacle Robot Is Like an Elephant Trunk "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

It sounds like bad science fiction or anime, but researchers are creating helical-artificial fibrous muscle structured tubular soft actuators. What? Oh, tentacle robot arms. Got it.

The researchers at Westlake University in China found inspiration in elephant trunks. Elephant trunks are entirely devoid of bone but use a tubular muscle structure. By deforming certain muscles, complex motion is possible. After understanding how they work, it was just a matter of making a similar structure from artificial muscle fibers.

The resulting actuator uses smart materials and has eleven different morphing modes more than other attempts to build similar structures. The fabrication sounds difficult, it involves stretching chemically reactive materials over a form with specific winding angles.

The fibers react to light. Depending on the configuration, the stalk can seek light or avoid light. We were hoping the Materials and Methods section would give some ideas of how to do this ourselves, but it looks like youd need some uncommon liquid crystal materials, and youd also have to work out some of the details.

Animatronic tentacles are usually complex cable affairs. However, we have seen some soft robots in the past, too.

However, several doctors criticized the guidance, not simply because CDC has appeared to guide biological men in how to breastfeed children, but because they claimed the CDC has failed to gauge the risks posed to children drinking milk produced by chemicals used in gender-reassignment medical operations. Chuck Norris: 7 Little-Known Facts About the Declaration of Independence "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This is never spoken off in the histories i have read, but the mere fact that a leading citizen like Franklin was reacting to military atrocities happening long before an outbreak of armed conflict.

In fact, the british crown had embarked on a program of coercion after the Tea Party two years earlier.  So of course atrocities abounded and leading citizens got incensed.  And the crown having difficulties collecting taxes was a traditional state of affairs.  Military coercion was not after the English Civil War.

So of course they revolted, then did the numbers and decided to give it a go.

At least the Brits took their lesson and then applied it to their expanding empire.  yet they could have ended the salt tax in India.

It is compelling that an anti slavery diatribe was in the draft.  Opinion was so against the instituion which actually makes ample sense since thae majority everywhere did not even participate and certainly not in New England.  Reading the Bible was paying off.

CarrageenanThe Thickener Thats a Sickener "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The good news is that vwe can simply stop.  this indication is now based on fifty years of science..

It is also likely that the majority of us tolerate this thickener well enough but not all.  Better yet we can do without.  You find it by the way in most ice cream and sour cream along with other thickeners like cornstarch.

Removing it from the food supply chain is an obvious step and completely doable.  Doing this with sugar is almost impossible and that demands an evolutionary transition also including a taste transition as well.

Folks, we really do need to rethink and yes regulate our whole food supply chain top to bottom and it is certainly not even difficult.  What can help is to identify desired goals and to then transition even ten percent per year.  This is then a natural evolution which can also be trackerd through meta trands in the bstats.

There is sound reason to fortify refined foods with vitimins.  The ywould otherwise be almost useless..

The Ultimate Guide to How Long does Canned Food Last and How to Store it Properly "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

To start with, all good by dates are firstly at the manufactureres convenience and thus over conservative.  failed canned goods suffer discoloration and serious taste alteration.  Pretty obvious really.

Of course fresh goods have their own natural limits to work against and are also obvious.  The big take home though is that low acid products are good for five years and often a lot longer.  i always wondered just how old those C rations were.  you get the hint.

Acid foods will oxidize and get neasty.  no problem.

now your own canned goods, done properly will last well over a year and it they are semi sealed fermenting veggies, way longer if you put them in the fridge.  After all ,the fermenting stops and the natural acids preserve.  again this becomes obvious.  and drop in a tea bag to block tannin build up for all krauts.  And lemon juice on top to avoid surface oxidization. That lasts a really long time.

Occupying The boreal forest "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Occupying The boreal forest

this is a follow up on my item discussing an operational husbandry for the boreal forest.  I am now convinced that it is completerly practical in terms of the production of food stuffs.  We then need to address the problem of living there.  We really need to do much better in all that.

The truth is that we have no problem building competant housing in the from of three story buildings on top of a working ground floor and cellar.  we do it all the time in the form of apartment blocks.  what we have not engineered into all thjis is the whole commu-nity, ,let alone the working whole community.  Yet that is the original plan in european villages in the first instance.  the only thing truly different is much cheaper housing costs.

so imagine building a southward facing stack of housing with their own decks.  The back wall is a continous cinder block type construct able to absorb and hold heat.  this is all good by itself.  now add a large shed construct along the back side ro allow animal retention and fodder storage as well and still well separated from living quarters.  this should provide ample space without setting up a distant barn facility doing exactly the same thing.  Manure management is already mastered and automated and need not ever be nasty.

The nex trick is to establish a greenhouse glass wall in front of hte building allowing multiple levels of hydaponics and even tree growing and all supported by geothermal at least.

My point is that building it all for a community provides low costs and ample off season growing opportunities as well.  all this easily supoorts a full on community garden facility as well.  the home stops been a refuge for avoiding the foul weather outside.

I like the idea of simply building a three story vertical glass wall some twenty feet in front of  our longish building without getting too carried away with sealing it all up....

Egg freezing and donation are complicatedthis startup makes them easier "IndyWatch Feed World"

Cofounded by Lauren Makler, Halle Tecco, and Arielle Spiegel, Cofertility makes egg freezing more affordable, connecting it to donation.

Though egg freezing has become somewhat commonplace, its still an expensive endeavor; one cycle can cost as much as $10,000. Even those with workplace benefits have to shoulder elements such as medications and long-term storage, which can run thousands of additional dollars. After years of struggling with their own fertility issues, digital health veterans Lauren Makler, Halle Tecco, and Arielle Spiegel realized that they could make egg freezing more affordable by connecting it to egg donation. In 2022after securing a $5 million seed round led by Initialized Capital and Offline Venturesthey launched Cofertility. The company lets qualifying people freeze their eggs free of charge if they agree to donate half of them. Cofertility then matches these donors with intended parents who are seeking a donor. Since Cofertilitys debut last fall, tens of thousands of people have applied to be a part of its egg-freezing programs, and the company has activated hundreds of donors.

This Stanford professor developed a new form of chemistry. Now shes deploying it against cancer "IndyWatch Feed World"

Carolyn Bertozzi won a Nobel Prize for developing bioorthogonal chemistry.

I had no idea people would have to pronounce this when I coined itits a mouthful! says Carolyn Bertozzi of the term she invented to describe the scientific breakthrough that won her the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (shared with Morten P. Meldal and Karl Barry Sharpless). Bioorthogonal chemistry refers to methods of performing chemical reactions inside living cells, animals, or peoplerather than in beakers, flasks, and test tubes. In the 1990s, she explains, we had all these ideas for ways you could study biology and make new kinds of medicines if you could design reactions where the chemicals totally ignore the biological system, but when they see each other, boom, they react. Orthogonal means no interaction, so bioorthogonal means no interaction with biology.

Who was the big winner in Virginias primaries? "IndyWatch Feed World"

This story was produced in partnership with the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO.

In the hotly-contested June primaries to decide the balance of power in the Virginia General Assembly, one party can claim victory: big donors.

The overwhelming share of campaign funding in the low-turnout, yet expensive, primaries in Greater Richmond and the Hampton Roads came from political organizations, business interests and corporate-aligned political action committees, according to an OpenSecrets analysis of campaign finance reports. Most candidates who raised big-donor money won.

Candidates in 19 contested races in the two regions raised more than $12 million when excluding self-funding. Less than 5% of that money came from small donors giving $100 or less, OpenSecrets found.

By contrast, two major donors Dominion Energy and climate activist and investor Michael Bills accounted for nearly 18% of total contributions.

OpenSecrets analyzed data from campaign finance reports filed for this election cycle, including those submitted to the state on June 12 and covering contributions and expenses in the final weeks of the primary season.

Unlike the federal government and most other states, Virginia places no limits on the amount of money candidates can accept from wealthy donors. Advocates of campaign finance reform say the system tilts political power and access toward large funders over voters.

Without contribution limits, candidates have little choice but to lean on big donors, Nancy Morgan, a reform advocate with BigMoneyOutVA, told OpenSecrets and the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO.

In the absence of any legislation, people don't want to unilaterally disarm, Morgan said. People say, you know, we have to get this money. How else are we going to do it?

India Signing the Artemis Accords is a Historic Win for Space Exploration "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

India signing the Artemis Accords is a historic win for space exploration:

A few days after Ecuador signed the Artemis Accords, India signed as well. Not only that, the United States and India will embark on a number of space cooperation initiatives, including a visit to the International Space Station by Indian astronauts.

India is one of the world's most advanced space powers, just behind the United States and China. Russia used to be second, behind the United States, but its status as any kind of space power has steadily deteriorated.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has grown tremendously since its humble beginnings in the 1970s. With the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) (renamed as the Launch Vehicle Mark 3) India has its own launch industry and is therefore not dependent on foreign providers.

[...] All in all, India's space program is a burgeoning powerhouse that is returning value on a number of levels to that South Asia nation. But what does India gain by signing the Artemis Accords? What does NASA gain by the ISRO becoming a closer partner in the quest to return humans to the moon and eventually send them to Mars?

As Space News notes, India's joining the Artemis Accords is just part of an expanded space cooperation regime between that country and the United States. An Indian astronaut will, in short order, visit the International Space Station. India will gain expanded access to NASA technology. Ultimately, that country will be part of the greatest adventure humankind has ever undertaken, the Artemis return to the moon program, provided that Congress doesn't cripple or kill it for budget reasons.

Mozilla Waters Down Its Vision of The Internet "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

When Mozilla speaks of Internet Health it does not mean free speech online but the opposite of that

Frances browser-based website blocking proposal will set a disastrous precedent for the open internet: Lowercase 'i' every time, even one more time at the bottom; They know how to spell Internet correctly

Summary: Mozilla is either run by people who dont understand Mozillas turf/domain or is steered in the wrong direction by suits who are intentionally distorting things (they have another vision of the Web/Net, wherein censorship is necessary)

MOZILLA Firefox is probably the least unethical (double negation) Web browser for people who try access stubborn modern sites Web sites that demand one of the Big Browsers or be denied access (short of faking being one of the Big Browsers).

Mozilla is now run by pushers of social control media (managers got hired from Facebook and Twitter) and the Board has Microsoft in it. Not quite the desirable composition and it shows (for instance, lots of Hey Hi chaff lately).

But heres another rub.

Mozilla is now run by pushers of social control media (managers got hired from Facebook and Twitter) and the Board has Microsoft in it.One might call this an act of nitpicking, but this is not the first time that Mozilla does it and people who work at Mozilla should know better. They should at least know how to spell Internet correctly, but repetition of the mistake suggests its not a typo; they did that weeks ago (we mocked them for it) and they did it again on June 26.

One reader has asked us to note the misspelling of the name Internet which they have apparently intentionally done (screenshot above). That misspelling is relevant to the the topic which they pretend to address. Proper nouns are always capitalised in English an internet and The Internet are two different things and by focusing on an internet instead of The Internet they are allowing for balkanisation and censorship and accepting it as the way forward.

Top NIH official advised Covid scientists that he uses personal email to evade FOIA "IndyWatch Feed World"

A top adviser to Anthony Fauci at the National Institutes of Health admitted that he used a personal email account in an apparent effort to evade the strictures of the Freedom of Information Act, according to records obtained by congressional investigators probing the origin of Covid-19. The official also expressed his intention to delete emails in order to avoid media scrutiny. "As you know, I try to always communicate on gmail because my NIH email is FOIA'd constantly," wrote David M. Morens, a high-ranking NIH official, in a September 2021 email, one of a series of email exchanges that included many leading scientists involved in the bitter Covid origins debate. "Stuff sent to my gmail gets to my phone," he added, "but not my NIH computer." After noting that his Gmail account had been hacked, however, he wrote to the group to say that he might have to use his NIH email account to communicate with them instead. "Don't worry," he wrote, "just send to any of my addresses, and I...
