Darin verweist er auf ein Interview im "Manager Magazin" (nur echt mit dem Deppenleerzeichen), das leider auch komplett hinter der Paywell ist.

In Paris, the American ambassador was summoned for a dressing-down. That was a decade ago, after an enormous leak of classified documents detailing American surveillance programs by ... The latest leak of classified documents that appeared online this year, the motive behind which remains unknown, has again illustrated the broad reach of U.S. spy agencies, including into the capitals of friendly countries such as Egypt, South Korea, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. Though the documents mainly focus on the war in Ukraine, they include C.I.A. intelligence briefs describing conversations and plans at senior levels of government in those countries, in several cases attributed to "signals intelligence," or electronic eavesdropping. Unlike in 2013, however, U.S. allies appear to be mostly shrugging off the latest examples of apparent spying. So far, the only evident political fallout from the latest leaks has occurred in South Korea, where one classified U.S. document described a debate among senior national security officials about whether to send artillery shells abroad that might wind up in Ukraine, potentially angering Russia.

If anyone in the CIA balked at employing Brguet as an agent, there is no record of their concerns. For the next four years, Brguet appears to have supplied information to the CIA, possibly indirectly contributing key elements to the French intelligence operation that successfully grabbed Carlos from a clinic in Khartoum in 1994. Breguet's final mystery remains unresolved however. In 1995, the veteran extremist turned CIA agent disappeared definitively after boarding a ferry from a Greece to Italy. Was he murdered? In what amounts to a second leak that the corporate media have studiously ignored, U.S. intelligence sources have told veteran investigative reporter Seymour Hersh that they are asking the same questions, and they describe a "total breakdown" between the White House and the U.S. intelligence community. According to Hersh's report, the CIA assesses that Ukrainian officials, including President Zelenskyy, have embezzled $400 million from money the United States sent Ukraine to buy diesel fuel for its war effort, in a scheme that involves buying cheap, discounted fuel from Russia. Meanwhile, Hersh says, Ukrainian government ministries literally compete with each other to sell weapons paid for by U.S. taxpayers to private arms dealers in Poland, the Czech Republic and around the world.

A set of secret national security documents burst into public view last week. The intelligence documents appear to have entered the public domain in an unusual way someone began sharing them, starting late last year, on an obscure Discord server called Thug Shaker Central. The alleged leaker, Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, was arrested. It is traditional for the government to exaggerate the alleged harms of classified information becoming public, and this appears to be happening again. The real problem isn't what's leaked, but what's classified. Almost every news story about the latest disclosures has noted that the Pentagon and other government agencies will now put tighter lids on secret documents, even though, as historian Matthew Connelly points out in his new book, "The Declassification Engine," the government already puts way too much material behind its moat. In fact, the human harm caused by unauthorized leaks is almost always inflicted by the government itself in the form of egregious prosecutions of leakers. Although Snowden, [Chelsea] Manning, and, more recently, Reality Winner, revealed secrets that the public had a right to know, the government charged all of them under the draconian Espionage Act. While Snowden sought safety in Russia, Manning served seven years in prison (she was originally sentenced to 35 years), and Winner was sentenced to more than five years for leaking just a single document.

It downplayed or ignored the other sides of globalization: (1) growing income and wealth inequalities; (2) the shift of production from old to new centers of capitalism; and (3) faster growth of output and markets in new centers than old centers. Instead of a mostly private capitalist system (like that of the U.S. or UK) or a mostly state capitalist system (like that of the USSR), places like China and India produced hybrids. Strong national governments presided over coexisting large private and state sectors to maximize economic growth. The days of the U.S. dollar as the supreme global currency are numbered. U.S. supremacy in high-tech industries must already be shared with China's high-tech industries. The U.S. empire's decline raises the question of what comes next. The most interesting possibility and perhaps the likeliest is that China and the entire BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) grouping of nations will undertake the construction and maintenance of a new world economy. The war in Ukraine has already enhanced the prospects of such an outcome by strengthening the BRICS alliance. They have the population, resources, productive capacity, connections, and accumulated solidarity to be a new pole for world economic development.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo and other officials sketched plans to target Assange that included poisoning or kidnapping him. This, along with the disruption campaign against WikiLeaks, represented the CIA's all-out war against a dissident media organization. The agency went so far as to redefine the organization as a "non-state hostile intelligence service" to carry out operations that it could never get away with against a group of journalists. It should be the subject of an intense investigation in Congress, and the Justice Department should be dropping the charges after publicly conceding that the CIA's actions mean Assange could never have a fair trial.

Correctional systems throughout much of Scandinavia are guided by a general set of philosophical principles. In Norway, core values of safety, transparency and innovation are considered fundamental to the idea of creating normality in prison, the feeling that life as part of a community continues. Incarcerated people can wear their own clothes, work in jobs that prepare them for employment and cook their own meals. Cells in Norway are also for a single person not multiple people, as in most cases in the U.S. Importantly, correctional officers have at least a two-year, university-level education and are directly involved in rehabilitation and planning for the incarcerated person's re-entry into the world outside of prison. In the U.S., most officers receive just a few weeks of training. Recidivism rates in Scandinavia are low. In Norway ... less than half of people released from prison are rearrested after three years. In Pennsylvania, that figure is closer to 70%. In State Correctional Institution Chester, known as SCI Chester, a medium-security prison located just outside of Philadelphia, a correctional officer-guided team has worked since 2018 to incorporate Scandinavian penal principles into its own institution. Six men in SCI Chester each sentenced to life in prison were selected to participate. They then moved on to the new housing unit, which had come to be known as "Little Scandinavia." SCI Chester shows that it is, in fact, possible to adapt Scandinavian-style penal philosophies.

New official restrictions are jeopardizing a liberating, prisoner-led program known as Taking Education And Creating History, or TEACH. TEACH's goal is to democratize education for people with long sentences. Between community support and financial backing outside the correctional system, TEACH successfully circumvented the Department of Corrections, or DOC, policy of excluding long-term prisoners from education. Since 2013, over 300 incarcerated individuals across three state prisons have become college students. Progressively, TEACH began breaking down barriers between various racial and cultural groups contradicting administrative beliefs that the Black Prisoners Caucus would further racial tension. Prisoners who would've never interacted with one another were now sitting at tables thumbing through books, while preparing for exams. When asked how TEACH has impacted the prison environment, Darrell Jackson, co-chair of the TEACH program at Washington Correction Center, said, "It has reduced the violence in prison, while creating a positive educational community for everyone regardless of one's crime, race or affiliation." He added, "Those with lengthy sentences were given a sense of purpose, something that many are stripped of when they enter into prison."

Every weekday at 5280 High School in Denver starts the same way. Students in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction gather on the steps of the school's indoor auditorium to discuss a topic chosen by staff members. One recent morning, they talked about mental health and sobriety. The students attend Colorado's only recovery high school one of 43 nationwide. These schools are designed for students who are recovering from substance use disorder and might also be dealing with related mental health disorders. Compared with their peers at regular schools who have gone through treatment, recovery high school students have better attendance and are more likely to stay sober, and their graduation rate is at least 21% higher, according to one study. Recovery high schools often weave components of treatment into the school day activities like 5280's daily recovery program meeting. In the afternoon, the school offers wellness electives such as spiritual principles and journaling. The school also employs a director of recovery and recovery coach to work with and counsel the students individually. "The No. 1 step is just letting them know out of the gate, no matter what's going on, that we love them," said Brittany Kitchens, the school's recovery coach. "We are here for them." Kitchens teaches students how to navigate recovery and regulate their emotions. She likens herself to a hall monitor, constantly checking in with students and looking for changes in behavior.

This is becoming increasingly clear as domestic players are formally calling on Western countries to impose sanctions on Georgia to advance pro-NATO and anti-Russian agendas.
In April, former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili formally requested that the Collective West sanction his own country. According to Saakashvili, currently imprisoned on serious charges of abuse of power and other crimes, with Western coercive measures, Georgia would be forced to release him and thus increase civil and political freedoms. On the occasion, he emphasized that the US and Europe would be the global defenders of democracy, decency and justice, and should therefore react to the supposedly pro-Russian tendencies of the current Georgian government which he accuses of complying with orders from Moscow.
The case is particularly curious as it echoes the current Georgian domestic political situation. The opposition to the government uses as its main rhetoric a supposed connection of the Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili with Russia. No evidence of his alleged connection with Moscow is presented, other than his resistance to being actively involved in the Ukrainian conflict in addition to his wise attitude to avoid fomenting new security crises in the separatist regions on the border with Russia.
When anti-government protests began in March, the signs of foreign interference to promote anti-Russian policies were already obvious. In the streets of Tbilisi, protesters held Ukrainian flags and sang the Ukrainian national anthem, as well as war songs of the neo-Nazi regime. En Mxico son muy bien recibidos, y en Mezcala, en el municipio de Poncitln, cobijaron a un rico de Guadalajara que pisoteo por ms de dos dcadas a nuestro pueblo. Ecoaldea Pangea: comunidad, bioconstruccin y cultura ambiental "IndyWatch Feed Noramerica"
Un grupo de 8 familias de artistas y artesanos se organizaron en asamblea para construir el sueo de vivir en comunidad y en armona en las sierras de San Luis. Hace 14 aos, la ecoaldea se levant con bioconstruccin y horizonte sustentable: huerta y energa solar. Hasta hoy funciona all una escuela de circo y teatro, realizan visitas guiadas e impulsan actividades de educacin ambiental.
Esta es la historia de un grupo de jvenes unidos por un sueo: vivir en paz con la naturaleza. Con esa idea en mente, los miembros de la Ecoaldea Pangea, ubicada en las sierras centrales de San Luis, se juntaron y comenzaron a organizarse. Matas Giachino, uno de los impulsores del proyecto, explica: Comenz a formarse entre dos familias que queramos vivir en el campo. Nosotros ramos artistas del circo, el teatro y la msica, mientras que la otra familia se dedicaba a las artesanas. Con esa idea, cuenta Giachino, comenzamos a construir el proyecto, a investigar y decidimos invitar a otras 8 familias, invitamos a artistas conocidos, gente buena y tranquila, y formamos una pequea comunidad que se fue agrandando con el tiempo.
La comunidad comenz a reunirse peridicamente en la Escuelita de CircoTeatro, que all por el 2008 se encontraba en la calle las Heras del centro de la capital puntana. All tuvimos un proceso de aproximadamente un ao de asambleas para formular el proyecto de Ecoaldea, recuerda Giachino. En esas reuniones cada persona expresaba sus sueos, sus miedos y sus aspiraciones. En base a eso fuimos armando un estatuto de convivencia, redactando las normativas del proyecto y diseando un prototipo de vivienda hecha con bioconstruccin. Fue nuestra gua de trabajo para construir la aldea, relata.
El proyecto se complet con la conformacin de la organizacin civil Pangea que formaliz las normas comunitarias acordadas. Pangea ONG se dedica al desarrollo humano, al cuidado ambiental, a la sustentabilidad y al arte y ha permitido motorizar actividades de reciclado, de educacin ambiental, culturales y artsticas.
Luego de meses de trabajo ya tenan el proyecto de la ecoaldea, que a grandes rasgos plasmaba la idea de crear una comunidad autosustentable, que respete y cuide la naturaleza y funcione como centro social y cultural. Greta Zarro has a background in issue-based community organizing. Her experience includes volunteer recruitment and engagement, event organizing, coalition building, legislative and media outreach, and public speaking. Greta graduated as valedictorian from St. Michaels College with a bachelors degree in Sociology/Anthropology. She previously worked as New York Organizer for leading non-profit Food & Water Watch. There, she campaigned on issues related to fracking, genetically engineered foods, climate change, and the corporate control of our common resources. Modern technology is riddled with innovations that were initially inspired by the natural world. Velcro, bullet trains, airplanes, solar panels, and many other technologies took inspiration from nature to become what they are today. While some of these examples might seem like obvious places to look, scientists are peering into more unconventional locations for this transistor design which is both inspired by and made out of wood.
The first obvious hurdle to overcome with any electronics made out of wood is that wood isnt particularly conductive, but then again a block of silicon needs some work before it reliably conducts electricity too. First, the lignin is removed from the wood by dissolving it in acetate, leaving behind mostly the cellulose structure. Then a conductive polymer is added to create a lattice structure of sorts using the wood cellulose as the structure. Within this structure, transistors can be constructed that function mostly the same as a conventional transistor might.

Extinct snails return to Tahiti in largest wildlife reintroduction ever "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"
The Polynesian tree snail, a tiny mollusk about the size of an aspirin pill, used to be found in abundance on Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia. But about 30 years ago, the little snail was eaten out of existence by two larger snails the giant African land snail (Lissachatina fulica) and the rosy wolf snail (Euglandina rosea) that humans introduced to the islands. In 1994, the Polynesian tree snail (Partula nodosa) was declared extinct in the wild. Other Partula snail species have also been marked as extinct in the wild or critically endangered. However, some Partula snails lived on in captivity. In the 1990s, conservation experts from various zoos including London and Whipsnade zoos (which are part of the Zoological Society of London, or ZSL), the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, and Saint Louis Zoo in the United States had rescued some of the last remaining individuals of several Partula species. And over the past decade, theyve been slowly reintroducing them to the wild. In April, zookeepers organized yet another reintroduction, this one involving the transport of 5,522 extinct-in-the-wild and critically endangered Partula snails to the French Polynesian islands of Moorea and Tahiti. Una jornada en la que predominaron el viento insaciable y el calor de la zona norte del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Miembros de comunidades que albergaron a la caravana El Sur Resiste se sumaron al recorrido, superando ahora los 200 integrantes. Pernoctaron en El Polvorn, espacio de la UCINOZI (Unin de Comunidades Indgenas de Zona Norte del Istmo), donde Carlos Beas alert a quienes estaba recibiendo que el Istmo es regin de bloqueos.
La caravana parti muy temprano hacia Mogo Viejo, donde el plantn cumple 60 das en la misma jornada del aniversario de Bety Cario. Decenas de mujeres y varones pertenecientes a la UCINOZI mantienen el bloqueo de las obras del tren pese a las amenazas de unidades de la Marina que realizan rondas a cualquier hora del da.
El acto se abri con el homenaje a Baty Cario, en el que muchas personas que compartieron su vida expresaron dolor por el crimen impune y se comprometieron a continuar su lucha.
Uno de los coordinadores de la caravana, Mario Quintero, destac que se pretende responder a las amenazas del Corredor para la vida de los pueblos as como denunciar el papel que juegan la Marina y el ejrcito, encargados de proteger las obras y de hostigar a los opositores, confluyendo con el crimen organizado, ya que todos sirven al gobierno.
Se trata de potenciar y animar las resistencias, en tanto que en el Foro Internacional en San Cristbal de las Casas vamos a platicar lo que hizo la caravana y ver lo que sigue.
Pedro Gonzlez, de una comunidad nahua del sur de Veracruz (Tatahuicapn), dijo que se trata de conocer a los hermanos que estn en lucha, porque sabemos que no estamos solos y que lo mismo est sucediendo en otros lugares de Mxico y del mundo. Asegur que slo los pueblos indgenas estn defendiendo la tierra que los vio nacer y se mostr agradecido con las delegaciones internacionales y las personas del mundo (de Europa, Estados Unidos y Sudamrica) que llegaron a sumarse a la caravana.

Washington is resorting to various forms of coercion as it pushes to create regional alliances aimed against its geopolitical rivals, including Moscow and Beijing, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has claimed.
He was speaking to his counterparts representing other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at a meeting in New Delhi. The group, which was established by Russia and China, has six other members, including India.
Unprecedented pressure is being applied to independent nations through the use of open blackmail, threats, color revolutions, coups, and dissemination of blatant disinformation. All those tools long ago became the Western calling card, the minister said on Friday.
The goal of the US and its allies is to undermine the emerging multipolar world and preserve their dominance, according to Shoigu. Washington chose to dismantle the system of global security in pursuit of its ambition and withdrew from multiple treaties with Russia, the minister told his audience.
Shoigu said that Moscow had attempted to defuse tensions with NATO through diplomacy in 2021, but its proposals were rejected by the West, proving that it is unwilling to have a partnership of equals with Russia.
Today, Washington and its accomplices are executing a strategic plan to provoke other nations into military confrontation with the states they dont like, primarily Russia and China.
The minister interpreted the Ukraine conflict as a vivid example of American criminal policy. The US goal in it is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, create a threat to China and preserve its [hegemonic] position, said Shoigu.
The official blasted Western supplies of weapons to Kiev, stating that they only prolong hostilities and create additional risks to Europe and the entire world. He said the arms make their way to the black market and further into the hands of terrorist organizations.
The SCO, a Eurasian intergovernmental organization, includes China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan among its members.

Bash Back! Is Back : Reviving an Insurrectionary Queer Network: An Interview "IndyWatch Feed War"
In 2007, in the course of preparations for actions against the 2008 Republican National Convention, an insurrectionary network of queer anarchists formed under the umbrella Bash Back! Over the following three years, this network participated in a vibrant array of confrontations, organizing efforts, and publications, expanding and intensifying the struggle against sex and gender normativity. Today, as fascists and other bigots renew their assault on queer and trans people and anarchists fight back, there is an urgent need for renewed coordination and innovation. Ukraine looking to grab more of Russias oil revenues "IndyWatch Feed War"

Kiev is preparing to significantly increase tariffs for transporting Russian crude oil to the EU through its territory via the Druzhba pipeline, business daily Kommersant reported on Friday.
According to the report from the Russian outlet, which cites the consultancy Argus and market sources, Ukrainian pipeline operator Ukrtransnafta has applied for a two-step increase in transit prices, by 25% from the current $14.90 per ton to $18.70 on June 1, and by an additional 23.5% to $23 on August 1.
Transneft, Russias state pipeline transport company, confirmed to Kommersant having received notification from Ukrtransnafta of the tariff hike but said that it was not conducting negotiations with Kiev on the matter.
According to Kommersants sources, Ukraine is currently negotiating the hike directly with buyers in Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. However, any arrangements with them will have to be formalized with the Russian Energy Ministry and Transneft, experts say. The latter traditionally pays in advance for the transit of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory. The transit cost is included in the price of oil deliveries, and Russian oil companies, having received payment from buyers, reimburse Transneft for the transit.
The planned hike in transit costs will be the second this year, after Kiev raised the tariff by 2.10 per ton (18.3%) on January 1. Prior to that, the tariff was hiked twice last year.
Experts warn that overly frequent tariff hikes may bring oil transport via Druzhba to a halt, as buyers, despite not having many alternatives to Russian oil, may find the costs too high. According to Igor Yushkov, a professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, this scenario would hurt Ukraine, which relies on the transit fees.
Druzhba carries crude some 4,000km from Russia to refineries in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Supplies via the route were not targeted by the EU embargo on Russian crude that was introduced late last year.

US Resumes Large-Scale Production of Plutonium Pits for Nukes "IndyWatch Feed War"

During the Cold War, the US produced thousands of plutonium pit detonators at the Rocky Flats Plant in Colorado. Production halted in 1989 after the FBI and the EPA uncovered massive violations of environmental regulations. A small handful of pits has since been produced at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
The United States will resume the large-scale production of plutonium pit detonators used in nuclear weapons, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a sub-agency of the Department of Energy responsible for nuclear weapons, has announced.
In a new report to Congress, the NNSA indicated that its 2023 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan includes resources to ramp up plutonium pit production to 80 units per year, in accordance with approval received in 2021 to reestablish, for the first time since the early 1990s, the capability to produce War Reserve plutonium pits to ensure the US nuclear deterrent remains safe, secure, reliable, and effective now and in the future.
Plutonium pits, also known as plutonium cores, are a key component in both tactical and strategic nuclear weapons, serving as a trigger setting off a nuclear reaction that creates a large, secondary explosion of the main nuclear payload.
The 80 pits per year will be produced jointly at Los Alamos the birthplace of the American nuclear bomb, and the Savannah River Site outside Augusta, Georgia. 30 cores will be produced at the former, and 50 at the latter by repurposing an existing facility to meet this manufacturing capacity.
Production is expected to ramp up gradually, with not less than 10 pits expected in 2024, 20 in 2025, 30 in 2026, and not less than 80 per year from 2030 onward.
The NNSA report also shed light on a number of other nuclear weapons-related plans, including a program to extend the service life of the B61 Mod 12 nukes which the US has stockpiled at home and across half-a-dozen sites abroad to address issues related to multiple components that are nearing end-of-life, as well as military requirements for reliability, service life, field maintenance, safety and use control. The report highlighted that the total estimated cost of the program has jumped from $8.3 billion to $9.6 billion.

It lies in an area near Fort-Dauphin on the far southeastern coast of Madagascar, where 91% of people live in poverty and 80% of the rural population wholly depend on natural resources for their survival. The ilmenite-producing QMM mine has made their lives immeasurably harder, pushing them deeper into poverty. The mining operation has contaminated water, with uranium levels found to be 50 times higher than the WHO safe drinking water guidelines in some parts of the waterways and lakes adjacent to the mine, which the majority of the 15,000 people living near the site use for drinking and domestic purposes. In a phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky on April 26, Chinese President Xi Jinping identified negotiations as the only way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, something that the Ukrainian president has been resistant to.
Dialogue and negotiation is the only possible method, Chinese media quoted Xi as saying in his first known conversation with Zelensky since the Russian special military operation began. The Chinese president also stressed that Beijing will persistently seek peace and synergistically promote negotiations.
For his part, Zelensky, who for many months has expressed interest in speaking with Xi, said he had a long and meaningful phone call with the Chinese president that lasted for an hour. We discussed a full range of topical issues of bilateral relations. Particular attention was paid to the ways of possible cooperation to establish a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine.
There can be no peace at the expense of territorial compromises, he added, suggesting that perhaps Xi is wasting his time.
None-the-less, after the conversation with Xi, the Ukrainian president signed a decree which appointed former Minister of Strategic Industry Pavel Ryabikin as Ambassador of Ukraine to the Peoples Republic of China. This insinuates that the comments from the Chinese leader did not spoil relations between the two countries.
The long absence of a Ukrainian ambassador to China does demonstrate the traditional attitude that Kiev had towards the Asian giant. Now, despite relations improving, Kiev is giving provocative ultimatums on conditions for peace talks when Beijing is searching for peace.
It is recalled that Xi made a state visit to Russia in March and met President Vladimir Putin. During the visit, Xi and Putin affirmed their alignment across many issues, such as dealing with American provocations.
In addition, the Xi-Zelensky call comes only days after the Chinese Ambassador in Paris sparked controversy by suggesting that the Baltic states had no status under international law following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, something which authorities in Kiev could have interpreted as also being aimed against them. This was ultimately rejected by Beijing though, with authorities saying that the ambassadors comments were his own personal opinion and not official policy.

LAGOS APRIL 28TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta State Project Committee on the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has requested for the sum of N1.3 billion as part of the state governments counterpart funding for the smooth takeoff of the European Investment Bank (EIB) projects in the state.
EIB is an international donor intervention organisation which has taken over the structure of NEWMAP as it ends its first phase projects intervention in some states in Nigeria.
The state commissioner for environment and chairman, State Steering Committee on NEWMAP, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, at the quarterly meeting of the Steering Committee, in Asaba said the task before the committee was urgent.
He said the takeover of the NEWMAP structure by the international donor organisation will ensure the completion of uncompleted projects and rehabilitation of new sites.
Asiuwhut said the NEWMAP project in the state has changed to EIB donor intervention project.
He said the recent technical mission of NEWMAP on the European Investment Bank at Abuja he attended with the state project coordinator, Mr. Benedict Nwaokocha, had revealed the readiness of the international donor organisation to partner in the erosion intervention project in Delta and other states in the country.

Bangladesh has been swept up in the massive heat wave scorching large parts of Asia, with temperatures among the highest in six decades. The countrys capital, Dhaka, saw the temperature reach 40.6 Celsius (105.1 Fahrenheit) on April 16, the highest in 58 years, making peoples lives unbearable for more than a week with low humidity in the air, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) officials. It is unusual. Almost the entire country was under cover of a heat wave. It is a new experience and also alarming at the same time, Md. Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist with the BMD, told Mongabay on April 20. Abdul Mannan, a retired meteorologist, said heat waves usually sweep over the western region of the country, but this year extended to the southwestern areas too. The BMD concurred that the extent of the affected area was something new. A 2021 report by the World Bank noted that average temperature rises in Bangladesh are broadly in line with the global average. It said Bangladesh regularly experiences some of the highest maximum temperatures in Asia, with an average monthly maximum of around 30C (86F) and an average April maximum of 33C (91F). Anatomy of Three Leaked US Intelligence Documents "IndyWatch Feed War"
Among the documents leaked on the social
messaging platform Discord in February 2023 were three purported
damage assessments from recent strikes by the Ukrainian Armed
Forces on Russian targets.
These documents are among hundreds that were allegedly posted onto
Discord channels throughout 2022 and 2023 by accused leaker Jack
Teixeira, a U.S. National Air Guardsman who was arrested on April
13.
While the US government has not officially confirmed the
authenticity of the documents, the
charges levelled against Teixeira accuse him of leaking
classified military documents.
While it has been widely reported that the US has shared intelligence and targeting data with Ukraine following Russias full-scale invasion, it is unclear if these assessments are occasions where this was the case. It is also possible that the documents detail analysis or intelligence gathering on Ukrainian operations which the US became aware of only after they took place.
Still, the documents are revealing given they highlight US intelligence gathering around the invasion as well as some of the satellite and analytical resources at its disposal.
Neither the US Department of Defense nor Ukraines Ministry of Defence had responded to Bellingcats requests for comment by the time of publication.

Steven Crowder insists that Hilary not take their one car to run errands as it would keep him housebound and that she, at nearly eight months pregnant, should take an UBER.

Steel pipelines used to transport fossil fuels are prone to
corrosion. Contaminants in oil or gas, such as hydrogen
sulfide and carbon dioxide, can cause corrosion on the inside of
the pipes. Rain and dew can cause corrosion on the exterior of
pipes when they are stored outdoors. Soil constituents and
groundwater can cause corrosion on the exterior of pipes when they
are buried beneath the surface, with wet areas more susceptible to
corrosion than dry areas.
Corrosion in a pipeline is extremely dangerous, leading to catastrophic explosions and death. Indeed, corrosion problems are the second greatest cause of pipeline failures.
Fortunately, coatings can be applied to pipes to help protect against corrosion. Ideally, pipes are coated both internally and externally to protect from both types of corrosion. Unfortunately, federal regulations only require external coatings for oil and gas pipelines. And pipe coating is not permanent or indestructible. It has to be carefully maintained to retain its protective qualities. If coated pipes are stored outdoors and exposed to the elements, the pipe coating can degrade due to rain, wind, andespeciallyultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. As coating degrades, its protective function also diminishes. Even a tiny imperfection in the coating can create a concentrated area of accelerated corrosion.</p> <p>The rate and extent of coating degradation will vary by the particular circumstances at a site, but according to the National Association of Pipe Coating Applicators: Above ground storage of coated pipe in excess of 6 months without additional Ultraviolet protection is not recommended. A 2020 study found that coated pipes that were not provided with additional protection and were exposed to UV rays for many years beyond the recommended six-month maximum completely failed to retain their orig...

Exceptionally warm conditions are being driven by the end of a persistent triple-dip La Nia and a rapid transition into warmer El Nio conditions.
Taking the first three months of the year, global surface temperatures so far are tied as the fourth warmest on record, after 2016, 2020 and 2017.
March 2023 was the second warmest since records began in the mid-1800s, with record warm temperatures in parts of central Asia, coastal China, and Japan, as well as South America.
Based on the year-to-date and the current El Nio forecast, Carbon Brief estimates that 2023 is very likely to end up between the warmest year on record and the sixth warmest, with a best estimate of fourth warmest. So early in the year, it is difficult to precisely predict where annual temperatures will end up.
Arctic sea ice extent is currently on the low end of its historical range, while Antarctic sea ice set new all-time low records in the first two months of 2023, with an all-time low summer minimum for the Southern Hemisphere in February 2023.
Global surface temperatures are recorded and reported by a number of different international groups, including NASA, NOAA, Met Office Hadley Centre/UEA and Berkeley Earth. Copernicus/ECMWF also produces a surface temperature estimate based on a combination of measurements and a weather model an approach known as reanalysis.

On this weeks WhoWhatWhy podcast, Jeff Schechtman talks with British journalist and historian Christopher de Bellaigue about his book, Flying Green: On the Frontiers of New Aviation. De Bellaigue lays out the almost unattainable goal of the aviation industry to achieve zero emissions by 2050 and examines the questionable sincerity of the industrys commitment to reducing its significant carbon footprint.
While the industry claims dedication to greening aviation, de Bellaigue argues that considerable progress is still needed. He identifies sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as a potential early solution, since they are compatible with existing airframes. Hydrogen emerges as another possible fuel source for the transitions intermediate stage airport reconfiguration, which is very unlikely. Electric planes, considered the pinnacle of green aviation, face limitations due to inadequate battery technology for long-distance flights.
He underscores the importance of developing new engine technologies and redesigning airplanes for alternative fuels to meet the net-zero goal. Surprisingly, he notes that the greatest progress has come from cargo companies like DHL, FedEx, and Amazon.
De Bellaigue also talks about cutting-edge emerging technologies, and while SAF and biofuels show promise in the US, Europe is advancing in electrofuels, which combine carbon dioxide extracted from the air with hydrogen.

Cleopatra was light-skinned, says Egypt in Netflix documentary row
Egypt's antiquities ministry reiterated on Thursday that Cleopatra had "white skin and Hellenistic features", amid a continuing dispute over a Netflix drama-documentary that portrays the female pharaoh as black.
The film, Queen Cleopatra, is scheduled to be released on the streaming platform on 10 May. The famous Egyptian ruler is played by actress Adele James.
Mostafa Waziri, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Archaeology, said that the depiction of Cleopatra as black is a falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant historical misconception, especially as the film is classified as a documentary.
The officials comments are reinforced by an online petition signed by 40,000 people, which accused the production of distorting history.
An Egyptian MP has called on parliament to ban the streaming platform altogether, due to what it called repeated offensive behaviour and an attack on family values.
In its statement, the antiquities ministry quoted experts and historians who all agreed that Cleopatra had "white skin and Hellenistic characteristics".

In 1995, when Colombia protected the island of Malpelo by setting up the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, the area had a recorded 43 species of crustaceans, six species of starfish, and 70 species of fish. These figures, the only ones available, were from 1972, when the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute led its first expedition to the island. Over time, scientists carried out more expeditions, and the number of recorded species grew. By 2016, the National Natural Parks System of Colombia had cataloged 1,500 animal species in the area. Nine of them are not found in any other part of the world and about 40 species are threatened or vulnerable, according to a parks system press release. Yet a large part of the life cycle and the ecology of some of these species remained unknown, especially for migratory species like the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), which visits the island frequently. For example, no one knew the routes by which the sharks in this population move through the sea, how deep they swim, where else they congregate, the locations of all their breeding areas, or their relationships with other populations of scalloped hammerheads. The first time Tennessees Republican governor stood at the podium in the wake of the mass shooting at the Covenant elementary school last month, he was flanked by GOP lawmakers. They touted school hardening measures, including hiring more armed guards and strengthening entry points.
A week later, Gov. Bill Lee stood alone. He called for something rare in a Second Amendment-friendly state like Tennessee: gun-control measures. The violence had struck close to home, taking the life of six victims, including a close family friend of the governors.
Im asking the legislature to bring forth thoughtful, practical measures, Lee said. To strengthen our laws, to separate those dangerous people from firearms, while at the same time preserving the constitutional rights of the people of this state.
Republican lawmakers pushed to end their legislative session early rather than take up his proposals. Lee responded within hours by saying he would force legislators to return to the Capitol for a special session.

Authorities investigating the discovery of 14 dead vultures in a feeding zone thats meant to be safe for the scavenging birds have found that they died from eating poisoned bait left for other wildlife. The preliminary inquiry by the Bangladesh Forest Department and the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority, determined that local people had deliberately poisoned a goat carcass and left it out for feral dogs and jackals that had been attacking the communitys livestock. The discovery of the dead vultures began with a white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) that IUCN researchers had fitted with a satellite tag in October 2022. On March 22 this year, they noticed that the bird had been transmitting its position from the same location for about 15 days. This prompted them to send a rescue team to the location, where they found the vulture dead and hanging between two trees. A wider search yielded two more dead vultures, also hanging from trees. The team widened their search to the areas of Kalar Bazar, Raipur, Buriganga and Moulovibazar, all within the so-called vulture-safe zone of Sylhet division. In all, they recovered 14 vulture carcasses (12 white-rumped vultures and two Himalayan griffons, Gyps himalayensis). This incident is particularly severe for Bangladeshs white-rumped vultures, whose total estimated population in the country was just 260 in 2015, when a national action plan to save the birds was drawn up. The first quake, which had a magnitude of 6.0, struck at 3:13 p.m. Fiji time on Friday and was centered about 785 kilometers (490 miles) south of Suva, the capital of Fiji, or 790 km (490 mi) southwest of Tonga. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was followed by a stronger earthquake, a 6.6, just moments later. Both struck nearly 600 kilometers (370 miles) below the seabed, making them very deep earthquakes. The earthquakes were followed by two moderate aftershocks during the next hour, both of which measured 5.5, according to the USGS. The first one struck at 3:34 p.m., the other one at 3:51 p.m. There is no threat of a tsunami from Friday's earthquakes.

When attorneys arrived for oral arguments in South Carolinas high-profile abortion case last fall, state Supreme Court Justice Kaye Hearn took her seat up front, a ruffly white shirt beneath her black robe, the only woman on the dais. With piercing blue eyes, she scanned the courtroom.
A sea of white men jammed one side of the room. Before them, at a wooden table, sat three male attorneys there to argue in favor of the states law banning abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.
On the other side of the room, a group composed mostly of women crowded benches behind a female attorney who had challenged the law.
Even in these polarized times, the starkness of the divide stunned Hearn.
South Carolinas high court was among the first to hear an abortion law challenge after the U.S. Supreme Court released its Dobbs v. Jackson decision last June, overturning the countrys landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade and kicking the combustible issue to the states. Hearn knew the nation was watching. But she didnt anticipate that the arguments about to begin in that divided courtroom would contribute to an even starker gender divide on the court where she sat.
Three months later, on Jan. 5, the justices struck down the deep red states abortion law. By a 3-2 vote, the majority ruled that the law violated the states constitutional right to privacy. Hearn wrote the lead opinion, a capstone of sorts given she had reached the mandatory retirement age of 72.
While abortion rights supporters rejoiced, the ruling outraged the General Assemblys new supermajority of Republicans, many of whom derided her as an activist jurist. They also saw an opening.

Andrew Bridgen, a U.K. member of Parliament this month warned his fellow parliamentarians that the World Health Organizations (WHO) proposed new pandemic treaty and amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) represents a huge grab of power by unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats.
The WHO is promoting a pandemic treaty and IHR amendments to its existing members to increase the global health organizations power during health emergencies.
In Bridgens 18-minute speech since viewed by almost 100,000 people delivered April 17 during a parliamentary debate, Bridgen called for a referendum, or public vote, on the WHOs proposals.
People in the U.K. do not want to be ruled by an unelected group of people, Bridgen said. We should have a referendum, because sovereignty belongs to the people. Its not ours to give away.
The debate was triggered after 156,086 U.K. constituents signed a petition calling for the U.K. government to commit to not signing any international treaty on pandemic prevention and preparedness established by the WHO, unless this is approved through a public referendum.

Iranian engineers have created technologies capable of detecting the fingerprints of enemy equipment including the radar signature identifying individual Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, Iran Electronics Industries (IEI) chief Brig. Gen. Amir Rastegari has revealed.

We have the fingerprints of the enemys electronic equipment. Just as fingerprints are unique to humans, this is also the case in regard to electromagnetic systems, and we have achieved the technology [to detect them] for several years, the official said in an interview with local media.
For example, if the radar of an F-35 fighter begins operations and surveillance, it emits radar waves which are different from those of anothers F-35s radar waves. Today, we are capable of recognizing them, that is, we can receive and analyze the telecommunication, radio and magnetic signals and find out the warplane they belong to. If the same fighter jet starts operating later, we will immediately find out about it, Rastegari explained.
This capability to monitor all dimensions of the electromagnetic waves projected by enemy aircraft allows Iran to plan its defensive operations accordingly, the official said.

The U.S. is unwilling to yet give up in its proxy war with Russia in Ukraine. Russia can not stop the war without securing its legitimate interest to keep NATO and/or the U.S. out of its neighbor state. A loss of the war would create an existential danger for Russia.
With the two major powers engaged in a war a third party is needed to solve the conflict.
In the spring of last year Turkey and Israel successfully helped to find a peace agreement. A good solution was found and Russia as well as Ukraine agreed to it. But the U.S. needed the war to continue. It sent the British prime minister Boris Johnson to Kiev to sabotage the deal. The Ukrainian president was told that the country would lose all western support should it sign an agreement with Russia.
As the somewhat neutral middle powers were unable to push any agreement through it became obvious that a third party with more heft was needed to seal a deal.
The time of moving towards a deal also needed to be right. On February 24, exactly a year after the war had started, China announced its Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis. This was not a peace plan but a lay out of things that will need to be understood and done to come to a sustainable solution of the crisis.
A months later China took the next step that will be needed in the process. It introduced a high ranking diplomat who will hold the preliminary talks in Ukraine and Russia to find the potential ways to proceed. The announcement was made after a phone call between the presidents Xi and Zelensky:

The 80-year-old president has been ridiculed for relying on such notes before, with opponents arguing that his cognitive capacity is declining.

A rising number of young people believe in God or a higher power, according to a recent survey of Americans aged 18-25.
The survey, conducted in December by the Springtide Research Institute and noted Sunday by the Wall Street Journal, found approximately one-third of respondents believe in a higher power, marking an increase from just a quarter who said that in 2021.
Multiple young adults, church leaders and theologians who spoke to the Wall Street Journal attributed the apparent increase to the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic, which the Rev. Darryl Roberts of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., said stripped away many of the protections young people had come to expect.
Some of the young people who spoke to the outlet indicated that a belief in a higher power does not necessarily carry over into identifying with an organized religion.
We are seeing an openness to transcendence among young people that we havent seen for some time, says Abigail Visco Rusert, associate dean at Princeton Theological Seminary, told the outlet.
The Wall Street Journal noted that other polls, such as one conducted by Gallup in 2022, have found that belief in God is in decline. While the vast majority of respondents said they still believe in God, Gallup found that number had dipped from 87% in 2017 to 81% last year. A Wall Street Journal-NORC poll published in March found that 31% of Americans ages 18 to 29 claimed religion was very important to them, which the outlet noted was the lowest percentage among all adult age demographics.
A report by the Pew Research Center and the General Social Survey published in September found a surge of adults leaving Christianity to become atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular.
