Biden Establishes Office of Environmental Justice "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

President Biden on Friday signed an executive order creating a new Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) within the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

The OEJ directs federal agencies to work closer and earlier with communities affected by pipelines, highways, chemical plants, and waste sites to address centuries of racist policies that have imposed disproportionate pollution upon BlackIndigenous, and other people of color. Environmental justice will be the mission of the entire government woven directly into how we work with state, local, tribal and territorial governments, Biden said.

The creation of the White House OEJ marks a major victory for environmental justice advocates. Todays executive order is the result of nearly two decades of organizing by the environmental justice movement, Ozawa Bineshi Albert, co-ED of the Climate Justice Alliance, a national nonprofit representing 89 rural and urban community-based EJ groups and supporting networks, said in a statement. This win belongs to our communities who have been on the frontlines of the climate crisis, creating solutions, building local power, and engaging lawmakers for decades.

Hunter Biden for 2024 "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Joe is too old and he just reads the cue cards anyway for those who are really the president like Dick Cheney was behind Bush and Hillary behind Bill. Lets not have any more surrogate presidents. Hunter Biden has shown amazing qualifications.

He was a top executive in a Ukrainian Energy Company so he has vast experience in the energy field. He is a Chinese major financier with personal relations that will come in handy all the way to the top of the Chinese Communist Party. And in Africa, he was a major land developer. He understands that income taxes are immoral and will probably end the IRS.

He is obviously a Renaissance Man capable of handling the entire world all while he was on cocaine and simultaneously banging hookers who would probably save the country and prevent him from pushing any buttons out of frustration.

So lets Get on Board Hunter for 2024

The War on Free Speech Is Really a War on the Right to Criticize the Government "IndyWatch Feed War"

Since when have we Americans been expected to bow submissively to authority and speak with awe and reverence to those who represent us? The constitutional theory is that we the people are the sovereigns, the state and federal officials only our agents. We who have the final word can speak softly or angrily. We can seek to challenge and annoy, as we need not stay docile and quiet.

Justice William O. Douglas

Absolutely, there is a war on free speech.

To be more accurate, however, the war on free speech is really a war on the right to criticize the government.

Although the right to speak out against government wrongdoing is the quintessential freedom, every day in this country, those who dare to speak their truth to the powers-that-be find themselves censored, silenced or fired.

Indeed, those who run the government dont take kindly to individuals who speak truth to power.

In fact, the government has become increasingly intolerant of speech that challenges its power, reveals its corruption, exposes its lies, and encourages the citizenry to push back against the governments many injustices.

This is nothing new, nor is it unique to any particular presidential administration.

For instance, as part of its campaign to eradicate so-called disinformation, the Biden Administration likened those who share false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories, and other forms of mis- dis- and mal-information to terrorists. This government salvo against consumers and spreaders of mis- dis- and mal-information widens the net to potentially include anyone who is exposed to ideas that run counter to the official government narrative.

In his first few years in office, President Trump declared the media to be the enemy of the people, suggested that protesting should be illegal, and that NFL players who kneel in protest during the national anthem shouldnt be in the country.

Then again, Trump was not alone in his presidential disregard for the rights of the citizenry, especially as it pertains to the right of the people to criticize those in power.

President Obama signed into law anti-protest legislation that makes it eas...

Finlands Military Spending Soars to Cold War Levels as It Joins NATO "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Igor Kuznetsov Sputnik 25.04.2023

Having formally joined NATO earlier this month, Finland has recorded its highest year-on-year spike in defense spending since 1962, the height of the Cold War.

Finland, which shares the longest border with Russia in Europe at 1,300 kilometers, recorded the most drastic spending boost in the EU (36 percent), underpinned by a number of costly purchases, such as a new fleet of 64 F-35 fighter jets from US weapons company Lockheed Martin. The 10-billion-euro procurement was billed as the single largest splurge in the Nordic countrys history.

During the late Cold War-era, Finland spent approximately 1.9 percent of its GDP on defense, yet saw its spending plummet in the subsequent years and reach its lowest in 2001 at 1.1 percent of GDP. Barely two years earlier, the defense expenditure still stood at a meager 1.3 percent of GDP. However, last year alone, Finlands outgoing five-party government led by the Social Democrats agreed to add more than 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in defense spending, citing hostilities in Ukraine as a pretext.

In doing so, Finland notably eclipsed its fellow European nations, such as Lithuania, Sweden and Poland, which saw the next biggest spikes in their defense budgets at 27 percent, 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

As a new-fledged NATO member, Finland has emerged as one of the top military spenders in the alliance, spending about 2 percent of GDP. In 2022, only the US (3.5 percent of GDP), Poland (2.4 percent), Estonia (2.3 percent) and the UK (2.1 percent) spent more on defense per capita than Finland. Despite NATOs spending goal of 2 percent, many nations fall well below this target. For instance, Finlands neighbor Norway had a spending level of just 1.55 percent. Its neighbor Sweden, with which it filed a joint NATO bid only to part ways later on, has pledged to reach the blocs target of military spending as soon as possible, whereas Denmark seeks to reach NATOs target within a decade, by 2033.

Meanwhile, global military expenditure rose to a record high last year amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which spurred European nations and, broadly, the West, into reaching spending levels unseen since the Cold War. European military spending alone shot up 13 percent last year.

According to an estimate by researchers from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), last years total global military spending rose by 3.7 percent in real terms to $2.24 trillion. SIPRI stressed that the hike rests on multi-year plans to boost spending from several governments, which is why it is reasonable to expect mi...

Note from Lefteast Editors. We repost Vladimir Mitevs interview with sociologist and left feminist activist Lea Vajsova, which originally appeared at Crossbordertalk on 13 February 2023.

We saw the conservative insistence on the traditional Christian family around the Istanbul Convention debate as a metaphor behind which a process of re-traditionalisation was taking place as an effect of dismantling the welfare state, which plays (and played before 1989 in socialist Bulgaria) a significant role in terms of achieving womens emancipation and socio-economic equality.

Treatment of Russia at UN shows need of its urgent reform or even replacement "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic April 25, 2023

The importance of global cooperation and international law has never been more pronounced in the post-WWII era than it is today. The worlds most important organization in this regard is certainly the United Nations, with one of its main tasks being to uphold international law and maintain its impartiality, regardless of which country or entity it is engaged with. Unfortunately, the UN has failed on both counts, but its role as an international forum of sorts that serves as the last frontier of dialogue between states is still evident. And yet, it seems that even this largely ceremonial role is too much for the political West, as it undermines its desire for total dominance through the so-called rules-based world order.

Perhaps the best example (although the worst would probably be a more suitable word) of this is the atrocious treatment of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the UN. The latest UN Security Council meeting (chaired by FM Lavrov) should serve as a textbook example of how not to conduct diplomacy, probably for decades to come. The tensions have been quite high at the UNSC due to the political Wests frustrations after Russia took over the council in April, a rule based on the regular monthly rotation. Lavrov warned against this and stated that the world has become a more dangerous place, possibly more so than at the height of the Cold War.

As was the case in the Cold War, we have reached the dangerous, possibly even more dangerous, threshold, Lavrov said.

The meeting, titled the Maintenance of international peace and security, came under fire as Western diplomats repeatedly grumbled about Russia taking over chairing of the UNSC on April 1 and that it allegedly must be an April Fools joke. Lavrov himself slammed the United States and its vassals and satellite states for abandoning diplomacy and called for the clarification of relations on the battlefield. However, Western diplomats went about with their hostility, including Olaf Skoog, the official representative of the European Union to the UN. Skoog openly called Russia cynical for allegedly trying to portray itself as a defender of the UN charter and multilateralism.

We all know that while Russia is destroying, we are building. While they violate, we protect, he said.

This statement alone shows the immeasurable level of EU/NATOs self-delusion, as the political Wests truly unprovoked and brutal aggression against the world...

Over an average April month's rainfall in just a few hours triggers flash floods in Trinidad "IndyWatch Feed World"

For the second consecutive day, parts of Trinidad recorded more than an average April month's rainfall in a few hours. The torrential rain triggered street and flash floods across parts of central, north-central, and northwestern Trinidad during the afternoon on Monday. Which areas were affected? As thunderstorms and heavy rainfall swept across Trinidad, flooding was first reported in Claxton Bay, along the Southern Main Road. As rain moved north, floods quickly began in Port-of-Spain along the typical flood-prone areas. Flooding occurred along Richmond, Edward, St Vincent, Charlotte, Park, Pembroke, Abercromby Streets, and Independence Square North and South. City Gate at South Quay in Port-of-Spain temporarily became impassable. Only one of the four eastbound lanes on St Joseph Road, exiting Port-of-Spain, was passable early Monday afternoon due to flooding.

Aggression, Guns, and Marcuse "IndyWatch Feed War"

Better not knock on the wrong door or drive into the wrong driveway, you may get shot. Kids are afraid to go to school for fear of getting killed, as the body count from mass shootings climbs every day. Hate crimes are increasing, and just driving to work is potentially dangerous. Think of tailgaters honking their horns and flipping you the bird as they speed past. Politicians address these issues by calling for gun safety legislation, increasing the number of police, and so on. But these policy responses accept the existence of aggressive behavior as a given and only treat the symptoms. The jugular question focuses on why people are becoming increasingly more violent and aggressive in the first place. We think Herbert Marcuses analysis of the relationship between late capitalism and the human psyche provides a good tool to answer this question.

Marcuse claims that the United States is a sick society, sick because its basic institutions and structures do not permit the use of available material and intellectual resources for the optimal development and satisfaction of individual needs. In other words, Marcuse saw that late capitalism possessed the material potential for people to enjoy much more freedom from want and work than they realized, but capitalism would never permit the fulfillment of this freedom because it would threaten the privilege and power of its ruling class. He calls this disparity between the potential for free human development and the constrained conditions of society surplus repression. In late capitalist society surplus repression is so strong and prevalent that social stability necessitates the opening of the human psyche for manipulation and control, thus creating human automatons, one-dimensional beings incapable of critical thought. This invasion of the mind, he argues, is not a conspiracy. Its rooted in the very structure of power in an advanced consumer capitalist society.

The objective of late capitalism to negate consciousness of the rupture between the individual and the societal imposed mode of existence has implications for the human psyche. Marcuse assumes the validity of Freuds concepts of Eros the life instinct and Thanatos the death instinct to explain how the structures of late capitalism breed aggressive behaviors. In arresting the development of human potential, late capitalism stifles Eros and fortifies Thanatos, he claims. This dynamic, he argues, creates destructive energy that is socially useful not only to maintain but to reproduce the dominant system of economic, political, and technological power. In short, the ascendancy of Thanatos creates the aggressive psyches necessary for the stability of late capitalism. The abundance of goods and services available provides almost unlimited opportunities for consumers to buy goods that reproduce the system of domination and create an endless supply of aggressive human beings. In other words, in a supposed exercise of freedom.....

Google researchers found multiple security issues in Intel TDX "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Google Cloud Security and Project Zero researchers found multiple vulnerabilities in the Intel Trust Domain Extensions (TDX).

Google Cloud Security and Project Zero researchers, working with Intel experts, discovered multiple vulnerabilities in the Intel Trust Domain Extensions (TDX).

The Intel Trust Domain Extensions (Intel TDX) allows to deploy hardware-isolated, virtual machines (VMs) called trust domains (TDs). Intel TDX is designed to isolate VMs from the virtual-machine manager (VMM)/hypervisor and any other non-TD software on the platform to protect TDs from a broad range of software.

The Google researchers discovered ten security issues in Intel TDX during a nine-month audit.

The researchers reviewed the source code of the core Intel TDX software components and the design and documentation provided by Intel. The issues inspected by the researchers included arbitrary code execution in a privileged security context, cryptographic weaknesses and oracles, temporary and permanent denial of service, and weaknesses in debug or deployment facilities.

The review resulted in 81 potential attack vectors and resulted in 10 confirmed security issues and 5 defense in depth changes over a period of 9 months. reads the report released by Google.

Intel addressed nine of the discovered issues by changing the TDX code, while the tenth flaw required changes to the guide for writing a BIOS to support TDX.

These flaws were not assigned CVE identifiers, but Intel internally assigned CVSS v3.1 scores to them.

The most serious issue discovered by the researchers was the Exit Path Interrupt Hijacking when returning from ACM mode. The issue received a CVSS score of 9.3, experts pointed out that an attacker can trigger it to achieve arbitrary code execution in the privileged ACM execution mode.

Its positive to note that of the security issues discovered only 2 would be considered memory safety issues. By far the most common class of security issues discovered were logical bugs due to the complexity of Intel processors generally, and the TDX feature specifically. continues the analysis. For example the Exit Path Interrupt Hijacking issue was a result of the complex set of steps necessary to switch between the privileged ACM mode and normal operating mode. Completely eliminating these logical issues is much more difficult than moving to a memory safe language such as Rust.

The above were mitigated before the...

Philip Herron and Arthur Cohen have posted an update on the status of gccrs the GCC frontend for the Rust language and why it will not be a part of the upcoming GCC 13 release.

While all of this appears like a lot of work, we are confident in our progress and hope to get closer and closer to getting the core crate working in the next few months. There is also a lot of important work remaining in order to produce a valid Rust compiler, which is why we will spend the coming months focusing on the core crate as well as a borrow-checker implementation, and the development of the necessary tooling to allow us to try and pass the Rust 1.49 testsuite. library with our compiler in the next major GCC release, GCC 14, and hope to backport enough changes to the GCC 13 branch to get the core crate working in time for the GCC 13.2 release. This will enable users to easily start experimenting with the compiler for #![no_std] Rust programs and, hopefully, some embedded targets.

The sheep look up "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I teach. Ive been at this university for 23 years, and I try to avoid the management side of things I stay away from the administration building, I dont even care who is the university president as long as they leave me alone. This may have been a very bad idea.

I got a notice from the administration that they are accepting applications for interim president of the university, because the last one is abandoning us after a short 5 years of employment (thats not surprising, U presidents seem to flit hither and yon, another reason to ignore them.) But it meant I had to take a minute to figure out whats going on.

Our outgoing president, Joan Gabel, is paid over $700,000/year. I dont know that she is worth that much. Now I learn that shes being offered an additional $260,000 if she stays through June. All right, thats a pretty sweet deal shes had. What is she being offered by the University of Pittsburgh?

Shes had a few scandals the biggest being that she took a position on the board of Securian, a financial company that does a lot of money management for the university. This was a serious conflict of interest, not to mention that shes getting paid a buttload of money to be the U president, and should be devoting full time to her job. The Board of Regents said it was OK, though, although our governor said it was not. She resigned eventually. Maybe shes mad at us because we wouldnt let her rake in more money with a side gig?

And then, the Board of Regentsevery time I hear about them, the less impressed I am. These are a bunch of politicians and business people who dont understand the purpose of an educational system. Ive mentioned Sviggum before the bozo who thought UMM was too diverse. Now I learn that the chair of the board, Ken Powell, was the disgustingly rich CEO of General Mills who made $24 million in the year before he retired. He is, supposedly, retired, but is now appointed to the chair of the Board of Regents hes the guy who thought is was no problem for her to work with Securian, who approved her exorbitant salary. The Regents main purpose seems to be to dip into the university till and give money to each other.

All I can say is that if I got paid tens of millions in my last year here, I would definitely def...

What to expect after Carlsons departure "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The circumstances that led to the firing of Tucker Carlson by Fox News are still murky. Neither he nor Fox have made any statement as to the precise reasons but speculation is that the abrupt nature of the firing in the absence of any obvious factors suggests that something serious had emerged to cause the rupture between them. We will have to see what that is. The one thing you can be sure of is that this was not a split caused by a clash of high-minded principles because neither party has any. It will be because of some grubby and tawdry issues. What I would like to see is a bare-knuckle brawl where they air each others dirty laundry.

As to what happens next, media analyst Jack Shafer says that nothing will really change after the departure of Carlson because what Fox does is not create shows around individuals but around certain types of people and it is easy replace a type. In fact, Fox has a deep bench of people who can step into Carlsons shoes and pick up where he left off in targeting white nationalists and in incendiary rabble-rousing around culture war issues as well as race and gender.

Roger Ailes, the original architect of Fox, who founded the network in 1996 with Murdoch, explained its show-making philosophy to Andrew Ferguson of the Weekly Standard in 2017. The subject was the early evening news-talk program, The Five, which in recent months has outperformed even Carlsons show. Ailes explained how he filled the slot vacated by solo artist Beck with an ensemble of pundits building a sort of Archies talk show for the Fox audience. The Five, would be performed by five commentators at 5 p.m. Get it?

Go around the table, Ailes told Ferguson. Over on this end, weve got the bombshell in a skirt, drop-dead gorgeous. But smart! Shes got to be smart, or it doesnt work. Next, he said, We have a gruff longshoreman type, salty but not too salty for TV. In the middle theres the handsome matinee idol. Next to him we have the Salvation Army girl, cute and innocent but you get the idea she might be a lotta fun after a few pops. On the end, we need a wiseguy, the cut-up.

When Ailes finally cast the show with his types, Ferguson writes, he summoned them to his office and had them stand in a semi-circle around his desk to explain why he was calling the show The Five,. Im calling it The Five because you are types, not people. You all are about to become very famous, and youre going to make a lotta money. A lotta money. But dont ever forget. Right behind you Ive got somebody exactly like you ready to take your place. So dont fuck up.

The privileged ignorance of Daniel Radcliffe "IndyWatch Feed World"

What a shame that JK Rowling made a star out of such a privileged plonker. It was King Lear who said, 'How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child'. I always think of it whenever I see the latest nasty little jibe at JK Rowling from one of the mediocre actors whom her novels shot to stardom. Now Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has opined - more in sorrow than in anger, no doubt, with a caring, sharing smile on those sensitive lips - that adults concerned about children changing gender are 'condescending'. More specifically, he 'affirmed' the beliefs of six trans and nonbinary children at a discussion organised by LGBTQ charity The Trevor Project this week, saying: 'There are people who also have a slightly condescending, but well-meaning attitude of "People are young... and it is a huge decision".' According to Radcliffe, 'We can trust kids to tell us who they are'.

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Spherical Lens: Reflections on a Gravity Lens Telescope (Part I) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Spherical Lens: Reflections on a Gravity Lens Telescope (Part I)

A growing interest in JPLs Solar Gravitational Lens mission here takes Wes Kelly on an odyssey into the past. A long-time Centauri Dreams contributor, Wes looks at the discovery of gravitational lensing, which takes us back not only to Einstein but to a putative planet that never existed. Part II of the essay, which will run in a few days, will treat the thorny issues lensing presents as we consider untangling the close-up image of an exoplanet, using an observatory hundreds of AU from the Sun. Wes has pursued a lifetime interest in flight through the air, in orbit and even to the stars. Known on Centauri Dreams as wdk, he runs a small aerospace company in Houston (Triton Systems,LLC), founded for the purpose of developing a partially reusable HTOL launch vehicle for delivering small satellites to space. The company also provides aerospace engineering services to NASA and other customers, starting with contracts in the 1990s. Kelly studied aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan after service in the US Air Force, and went on to do graduate work at the University of Washington. He has been involved with early design and development of the Space Shuttle, expendable launch systems, solar electric propulsion systems and a succession of preliminary vehicle designs. With the International Space Station, he worked both as engineer and a translator or interpreter in meetings with Russian engineering teams on areas such as propulsion, guidance and control.

Among topics arising on Centauri Dreams, reader response often turns to investigation: the original scientific reports plus surrounding evidence, the basis for many of the websites entries. And when a topic is unfamiliar or on a frontier of knowledge, reader investigation can be a matter of playing catch up, as I can attest. Fair enough. Scientific observations, data interpretations or hypotheses Take the matter of heading out to deep space to collect light from the other side of the sun and then deconvolute it to extract the image of an exoplanet. The steps to this objective have to be judged individually or reviewed as stepping stones, connecting lines of inquiry Or maybe going so far as...

TODAY: Watch Ispace Attempt to Land on the Moon for the First Time "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Watch ispace attempt to land on the moon for the first time:

After five long months journeying through space, ispace's Hakuto-R lander is ready to greet the lunar surface. The Japanese company is expecting to land Hakuto-R at 12:40 PM EST today. If successful, this first mission will no doubt be a huge boon for ispace's ambitious plans to send two subsequent landers to the moon in 2024 and 2025. It would also make them the first private company to land on the moon, and the first spacecraft from Japan to do so. (China, the United States, and the USSR have been the only nations to reach the lunar surface.)This first mission, appropriately named Mission 1, kicked off last December when a SpaceX Falcon 9 launched the lander into space. Since then, the lander has performed a number of maneuvers to stay on track in its path to the moon. At its farthest point, Hakuto-R traveled as much as 1.4 million kilometers from Earth.

The livestream will kick-off one hour prior to landing at 11:40 EST.

Goldilocks zone may not be a good metric for whether life exists on exoplanets, say astrobiologists "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Most exoplanets lying in the habitable zones around stars are in fact inhospitable to plant life as we know it. That is according to a new study from microbiologists and astronomers at the University of Georgia who say that taking into account the light a planet receives as well as its ability to hold liquid water is a better definition of whether life could exist on other planets.

The Habitable Zone (HZ) is traditionally defined to be the range of distances around a star where an exoplanet can support liquid water on its surface. Too far, and the planet remains frozen like Mars. Too close and the oceans evaporate, as happened to Venus. The zone in the middle is neither too hot, nor too cold, but just right the so-called Goldilocks zone.

Nothing certain is known about the properties and requirements of alien life. However, there are generally two schools of thought in astrobiology. One is that evolution on other planets can figure out ways to sidestep seemingly insurmountable barriers to life as we know it, while others claim that life is everywhere bounded by the same universal physical principles, and can thus only operate a certain way, similar to as on Earth.

Astral Magic: The occult religion of modern cosmology "IndyWatch Feed World"

How the Renaissance revival of ancient alchemy birthed the mythos of modern science. The European Renaissance was defined as a cultural rebirth, but what was it actually a rebirth of? This "rebirth" was a disastrous reintroduction of Hermeticism into European scholasticism, establishing the Hermetic tradition as a crucial factor in the development of modern science. Quite simply, the Renaissance was the rebirth of neoplatonic astral magic flooding into European culture. This Hermetic dominance of modern scholastic thought can be quite obviously seen in its great impact on the Copernican revolution. With the entire Renaissance being funded by the Medici Italian banking family, their Laurentian library was the knowledge hub of Europe, housing countless occult manuscripts that ushered in the golden age of alchemy. As Erasmus of Rotterdam saw this alchemical obsession begin to unfold, he forewarned, "I have a fear and it is, that, with the study of ancient literature, ancient Paganism...

Polyamorous Dating: Navigating Multiple Relationships Simultaneously "IndyWatch Feed World"

Polyamorous dating, also known as consensual non-monogamy, involves having romantic and/or sexual relationships with more than one person at the same time. It can be a rewarding and fulfilling way to approach relationships, but it also requires careful communication, boundary-setting, and emotional management. Here are some important considerations for anyone interested in exploring polyamorous dating:

Defining your boundaries and needs

Source: metrotimes.com

One of the most important aspects of a poly relationship is being clear about your own boundaries and needs. This includes being honest with yourself and your partners about what you want and dont want in a relationship. This can involve discussing topics such as time commitments, sexual health practices, and emotional expectations. Its important to remember that everyones needs are different, so its important to communicate openly and respectfully.

Navigating jealousy and emotions

Jealousy and other strong emotions can be a challenge when navigating multiple relationships. Its important to recognize that feeling jealous or insecure is a natural human emotion and does not mean you are bad at polyamory. Instead of trying to suppress or ignore these emotions, its important to communicate them openly and honestly with your partners. This can involve finding healthy coping mechanisms, such as practicing self-care, seeking support from a therapist or counselor, and taking time for yourself when needed.

Scientists at NIAID's Vaccine Research Center (VRC) report in two new studies that an experimental influenza vaccine, designed to elicit immunity against a broad range of influenza viruses, performed well in a small trial of volunteers. In fact, the vaccine has advanced to a second trial led by scientists at Duke University through NIAID's Collaborative Influenza Vaccine Innovation Centers (CIVICs).

In a phase 1 clinical trial of 52 volunteers, the vaccine developed by the VRC known as H1ssF (influenza H1 hemagglutinin stabilized stem ferritin nanoparticle vaccine) was safe, well-tolerated, and induced broad antibody responses that target the hemagglutinin stem. The two new studies assessing the nanoparticle vaccine published April 19 in Science Translational Medicine.

Even the civil service are up in arms about undeliverable cuts. But Heaton Harris shows no sign of budging "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Once again the old game of slipping deadlines is being played. An NI budget was due today? Soon?  Unprecedented pressure mounts but Chris Heaton Harris shows no sign of bending. Public servants rarely speak out publicly about their responsibilities but when they do its usually buried in Yes Ministerspeak. Not any more.   The tactic seems to have been to have a retired mandarin speak about the unique strain the absence of an Executive has imposed on them.  The former head of the NICS Sir David Sterling has obliged no doubt insisting he spoke only for himself

.Some departments are expected to see cuts of up to 10%, but with inflation sitting around 10%, that will mean cuts in real terms are much higher.. The, situation is the worst that it has been. The level of cuts that are being sought are just undeliverable.

My understanding is that the civil service are expecting that the Secretary of State will simply announce allocations at departmental level so he will not specify where any cuts are to fall, said.

We know that there is a measure of protection being afforded to the big budgets in health and education, but even they will be expected to absorb some cuts, but the other departments will probably be having to absorb cuts of more than 10%, and if you take into account we have 10% inflation, in real terms its significantly more than that.

In an unprecedented move Nicole Lappin, Chair of the Northern Ireland Public Sector Chairs Forum of 50 public bodies

We are taking this unprecedented step of calling on the Secretary of State to take urgent action to:

  • Ensure that our public services are appropriately funded to address the significant need in our communities while enabling us to reform for the future
  • Avoid implementing counter-strategic cuts which may result in the potentially unnecessary, irreversible loss of staff and services and lead to increased need and poorer outcomes in the future
  • Ensure that spending is cost-effective and represents value for money.

While we recognise the challenges of the current political environment, we have a public duty and a moral responsibility to do everything in our power to ensure the effective delivery of our vital public services. The current situation is clearly hindering our ability to do so.

In addition to creating clear governance issues, our members are deeply concerned that the cuts will ultimately have a disproportionate impact on those who are in most need.

The most punchable face in America is back! "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

And hes giving us even more reason to punch him!

Infamous Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli announced his newest venture yesterday, and its about as awful as youd expect. In a Substack post and on Twitter, he unveiled DrGupta.ai, a virtual healthcare assistant that (predictably) Shkreli believes will disrupt medicinein spite of some very real and worrying legal and ethical gray areas.

My central thesis is: Healthcare is more expensive than wed like mostly because of the artificially constrained supply of healthcare professionals, he wrote on Substack. I envision a future where our children ask what physicians were like and why society ever needed them.

Dr. Gupta is just Shkrelis latest health venture since being released from prison last May. Last year, he founded Druglike, a drug discovery software platform being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is looking into whether Shkreli is violating a court-ordered lifetime ban on working in the pharmaceutical industry by running Druglike.

Madness. If you replace all the healthcare professionals who generate the data that is leeched off by a glorified chatbot with said chatbot, where is the information that they parrot going to come from? All youre going to have left is a feedback loop that is disconnected from any reality checks, its going to get progressively worse, and were not going to get any new medical knowledge.

Its quite rich that hes blaming the high expenses of medical care on scarce skilled medical labor and knowledge, when hes the guy who artificially elevated the cost of life-saving drugs. Blame the greedy pharmaceutical executives instead.

Hey, people like Shkreli are the ones who could be replaced by a mindless software program!

Two Countries, Two Mass Shootings, Two Different Reactions "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In Hamburg, Germany, a gunman fired 135 shots at a Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses on March 9. He killed seven people including an unborn baby, whose mother survived. Eight people were injured. When police arrived at the scene, four minutes after the first emergency call, the perpetrator, Philipp F., ran up the stairs and shot himself.

Because of the rarity of mass shootings, Germany is still in shock six weeks after the incident. The media is still following the investigation, and lawmakers are contemplating whether this massacre could have been prevented and whether new laws might be needed.

Three weeks later, on March 27, six people, including three children, were killed at a school shooting in Nashville, TN. While many mass shootings in the US barely register, this one made the news for a few days. Democrats were outraged, and Republicans offered thoughts and prayers. But, as this was Americas 168th mass shooting of the year (defined as events in which at least four people are injured or killed) and others soon followed, people quickly, and predictably, moved on.

It would probably not be fair to say Americans are used to these kinds of incidents, said Thomas Greven, a specialist in US Politics at the University of Bonn. But theyre certainly more used to them than German citizens.

He added that the reaction to mass shootings is very different.

In Germany, there is no established routine for this, he said. Its a reaction of shock. And that, in my mind, raises the possibility of regulatory change.

Monster Heat Hits 1/3rd of World Population "IndyWatch Feed War"

It has started, and its fierce Monster Heat!

Its a monster heat spell like none before, according to climatologist and weather historian Maximiliano Herrera, describing Asias heatwave as the worst in history. (Source: Extreme Heat Scorches Asia, Affecting at Least a Third of the Worlds Population, The Verge, April 19, 2023)

Global warming is hitting full stride as SE Asia, inclusive of parts of China and India literally roast. Its a bad omen for the rest of the world as the entire planet is threatened by an emerging El Nio event starting this year.

El Nio is the warm phase of the El Nio-Southern oscillation that originates in the equatorial Pacific every few years, bringing on more heat throughout the planet. According to euronews.com/green, El Nio is forecast to return in 2023 and could set new temperature records.

Hundreds of weather stations across China broke April heat records. Is a new rapid-rising temperature trend in place because of global warming? It sure looks that way. For example, last year both China and India experienced severe heatwaves, shuttering factories, but it happened under the influence of La Nia, which is the cool phase of the El Nio-Southern oscillation, hmm. China sweltered under a devastating 70 days of intense heat that the country had never experienced before. There is nothing in world climatic history which is even minimally comparable to what happened in China last year, Ibid. This year (2023) is already similar, if not worse.

This years record heat in Thailand, China and South Asia is a clear climate trend and will cause public health challenges for years to come, according to scientist Fahad Saeed, regional lead for the climate policy institute, Climate Analytics. (Source: Hot and Hotter: Swaths of Asia Sweat in Heat Wave, Japan Times, April 20, 2023)

Our Methane Opportunity and Our Responsibility ~ Control Natural Gas ASAP Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

OMG! Flaring adds carbon dioxide directly to the earths atmosphere

Why fixing methane leaks from the oil and gas industry can be a climate game-changer one that pays for itself

From an Article by Jim Krane (Rice University), Yahoo! News Service, 11/17/22

Whats the cheapest, quickest way to reduce climate change without roiling the economy? In the United States, it may be by reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.

Methane is the main component of natural gas, and it can leak anywhere along the supply chain, from the wellhead and processing plant, through pipelines and distribution lines, all the way to the burner of your homes stove or furnace.

Once it reaches the atmosphere, methanes super heat-trapping properties render it a major agent of warming. Over 20 years, methane causes 85 times more warming than the same amount of carbon dioxide. But methane doesnt stay in the atmosphere for long, so stopping methane leaks today can have a fast impact on lowering global temperatures.

Thats one reason governments at the 2022 United Nations climate change conference in Egypt focused on methane as an easy win in the climate battle.

So far, 150 countries, including the United States and most of the big oil producers other than Russia, have pledged to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas by at least 30%. China has not signed but has agreed to reduce emissions. If those pledges are met, the result would be equivalent to eliminating the greenhouse gas emissions from all of the worlds cars, trucks, buses and all two- and three-wheeled vehicles, according to the International Energy Agency.

Theres also another reason for the methane focus, and it makes this strategy more likely to succeed: Stopping methane leaks from the oil and gas industry can largely pay for itself and boost the amount of fuel available.

Capturing methane can pay off ~ Methane is produced by decaying organic material. Natural sources, such as wetlands, account for roughly 40% of todays global methane emissions. But the majority comes from human activities, such as farms, landfills and wastewater treatment plants and fuel production. Oil, gas and coal together make up about a third of global methane emissions.

In all, methane is responsible for almost a third of the 1.2 de...

I know what kind of houseplant I want to get this summer "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Back in the long gone days of my youth, when I was working long hours as a nurseryman at a wholesale nursery in Kent, Washington, there were certain plants I admired greatly. This place had a small greenhouse just for bonsai that the owners tended carefully just about every day (mere laborers like me couldnt touch those.) They sold lace maples, which were probably my favorite tree at that time I bought one for my parents. But by far the most beautiful plants in the whole place were these big, gloriously bushy, vividly green plants raised out back, secretly, by a couple of the workers. These were the healthiest plants Ive ever seen, lovingly tended by the crew on breaks, initially raised illicitly under the benches in a hothouse and then transplanted to a sunny spot in an empty field.

You can guess what kind of plant they were. Unfortunately, just as they were reaching peak growth, the owner discovered them and took a machete to them.

There will be no machetes in Minnesota this summer!

Minnesotas foray into legal marijuana reached the first major decision point as the state House considered a bill Monday that establishes a seed-to-sale program and streamlines a process for clearing prior criminal offenses off records.

The vote along with one set for Friday in the Senate wont end the debate. Differences in the two versions would have to be reconciled before anything reaches Gov. Tim Walz, who supports permitting adults over 21 to buy, possess and use cannabis.

But if a bill passes before May 22, Minnesotas marijuana landscape would change starting this summer.

Cannabis will be no longer illegal this summer, said the bills lead sponsor, Rep. Zack Stephenson, DFL-Coon Rapids. The regulation, rulemaking and licensing process will take many more months. Beyond that you will of course also be able to home grow starting this summer so it will be a while before Minnesotans can expect to see a dispensary open up.

I should mention my least favorite plant: kinnikinik. They had acres of that potted stuff that I had to shuffle around and weed and load on trucks its a popular, low growing ground cover that may have been the bread and butter of the nursery, but I just found it boring.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid When Working With AUC ROC Curve 2023 Guide "IndyWatch Feed World"

When working with machine learning models, evaluating their performance is critical to determine their accuracy and effectiveness. One of the most commonly used metrics is the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC ROC) curve, which measures the models ability to distinguish between positive and negative classes. However, working with the AUC ROC curve can be tricky, and there are several common pitfalls that data scientists and machine learning practitioners should avoid. In this article, we will discuss some of these pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Understanding the AUC ROC Curve

Source: towardsdatascience.com

The AUC ROC curve is a graphical representation of a binary classifiers performance, showing how well it can distinguish between positive and negative samples. The curve plots the true positive rate (TPR) against the false positive rate (FPR) at different classification thresholds. The area under the curve is a measure of the classifiers overall performance, with a higher value indicating better accuracy.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

1. Using the AUC ROC Curve as the sole metric for model evaluation

The AUC ROC curve is a useful metric, but it should not be the only one used for model evaluation. There are other metrics that can provide additional insights, such as precision, recall, F1 score, and accuracy. Relying solely on the AUC ROC curve can lead to inaccurate conclusions about a models performance.

2. Ignoring class imbalance

Class imbalance occurs when the number of samples in one class is significantly higher than in the other. This can lead to biased AUC ROC curve results, as the classifier may be better at predicting the more frequent class. To avoid this, data scientists should balance the dataset by either oversampling the minority class or u...

Its recent success largely depends on our ability to reproduce and then improve on existing research products. It is about ensuring that researchers have sufficient access to information and the necessary tools for analysis. This movement goes hand in hand with the free software movement, as it has the potential to revolutionize sciences by providing powerful tools for data analysis, modeling, and visualization. I would like to focus my talk on the connection and missing links between free software and open science, particularly in environmental and data sciences. The talk is devoted to raising awareness and promoting conversations on how we can better advance sciences with free software and knowledge sharing.

Central Bank Gold Rush: Temporary Haven or Permanent Pivot? "IndyWatch Feed War"

In defiance of industry predictions, demand for gold in 2023 has persisted, due in large part to the bulk purchases made by central banks worldwide. Data from the World Gold Council indicates that central banks have bolstered their gold reserves significantly, with WGC analyst Krishan Gopaul adding that year-to-date purchases in 2023 exemplify the strongest start to a year back to at least 2010 when central banks became net buyers on an annual basis. Furthermore, gold prices have rebounded significantly since November 2022, with current prices hovering around $2,000/oz, not far from the record high price notched back in August 2020.

Underlying this demand for gold is a confluence of domestic and geopolitical factors. This article will examine the key motives that have influenced central banks decision-making, aiming to shed light on the persistence in golds appeal to central banks.

However, most people use software today, yet have complaints and fears about it. 3D Print For Extreme Temperatures (But Only If Youre NASA) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

At the level pursued by many Hackaday readers, the advent of affordable 3D printing has revolutionised prototyping, as long as the resolution of a desktop printer is adequate and the part can be made in a thermoplastic or resin, it can be in your hands without too long a wait. The same has happened at a much higher level, but for those with extremely deep pockets it extends into exotic high-performance materials which owners of a desktop FDM machine can only dream of.

NASA for example are reporting their new 3D printable nickel-cobalt-chromium alloy that can produce extra-durable laser-sintered metal parts that van withstand up to 2000 Fahrenheit, or 1033 Celcius for non-Americans. This has obvious applications for an organisation producing spacecraft, so naturally they are excited about it.

The alloy receives some of its properties because of its oxide-dispersion-strengthened composition, in which grains of metal oxide are dispersed among its structure. Were not metallurgists here at Hackaday, but we understand that the inconsistencies in the layers of metal atoms...

What Makes People Act on Climate Change, According to Behavioral Science "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As the world hurtles toward a future with temperatures above the thresholds scientists say will lead to the worst climate disruptions, humanity needs to take all the actions it can collectively and as individuals to bring planet-warming emissions down as quickly as possible. Governments and companies need to do the lions share of the work, but ordinary people will also need to make changes in their everyday lives. A crucial question has been how best to spur people toward more climate-friendly behaviors, such as taking the bus instead of driving or reducing home energy use.

New research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA pooled the results of 430 individual studies that examined environment-related behaviors such as recycling or choosing a mode of transportation and that looked into changing those behaviors through several interventions, including financial incentives and educational campaigns. The authors analyzed how six different types of interventions compared with one another in their ability to influence real-world behavior and at how five behaviors compared in terms of how easy they were to change.

As can be seen in the graphic below, financial incentives and social pressure worked better at changing behaviors than did education or feedback (for example, reports of ones own electricity use). The results reinforced what environmental psychologists have found when looking at these interventions in isolation.

Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ovuakporie, who defected to the PDP on January 24, few weeks to the Presidential and Governorship elections made the call weekend while speaking with journalists in Warri, Delta State.

He urged the Deputy President of the Senate to be statesman enough and make the call to congratulate the governor-elect rather than wasting energies on election petition that will lead him nowhere.

For me, Senator Omo-Agege should congratulate the Governor-elect.  He should congratulate His Excellency in the waiting, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor-elect. Senator Omo-Agege should congratulate him.  He cannot appeal or challenge the verdict of the electorates especially in a situation where the election was conducted in a freest manner.

Let him be a statesman enough and make the call to congratulate the winner, and join hands with him to move the State forward.  There is no need for unnecessary bickering.  Senator Omo-Agege should congratulate the winner, he said.

Ovuakpori , a foundation member of APC in Delta State, who contributed to the ascendency of Omo-Agege and primarily instrumental to the Senate Deputy Presidents political control of the party structure, said the proper thing for the APC candidate to do now is to accept defeat in the last election.

He boasted that his move in defecting from APC to PDP altered the political equation in Delta State and gave final blow to Omo-Ageges governorship dream.

Ovuakporie maintained that he had no regret for leaving the APC at the time he did just as he expressed delight at the emergence of Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of the PDP as the Governor-elect in Delta State.

The PDP victory was a confirmation of the good work and purposeful leadership of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa in the State particularly his infrastructural revolution. Above all, it is victory of democracy over evil. It was a victory for the masses and average Deltans. It was a defeat of the actions of evil.

Community pine nut harvests help protect Brazils araucaria trees "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

SANTA CATARINA, BRASIL A serene orange hue cuts across the horizon with the first rays of sunlight as dawn breaks in the mountainous countryside of Brazils second-most southerly state, Santa Catarina. The clear sky hangs above the ground, which is covered in a thin layer of frost. As the sun rises, the frost melts and water vapor rises from the ground, leaving a thin, slightly white curtain of mist. The smoky landscape of a morning frost is a typical occurrence during winter in this highland region. In the kitchen of Sara Aparecida and Silvino de Liz Rosas house, a wood fire crackles as it warms the room while the couple serve themselves chimarro, the traditional hot drink of people in southern Brazil, similar to yerba mate. The day starts early on the Santo Antnio do Caveiras farm, located in the community of Mortandade, in the municipality of Painel, in Santa Catarinas rural interior. Just a few steps from the slightly ajar front door, one can see the trunk of a 20-meter (65-foot) tall araucaria tree. The tree is a female of the species and is nearly 45 years old. When they built the house, the pine was barely 2 meters tall. Today, it guards over the land below and is something of a family treasure, since it produces more than 200 pine cones a year, said the couples son, Jaison de Liz Rosa. How Sirius (Mis)Handled a Crisis in 2022 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Summary: The gross mismanagement of Sirius Open Source is a longstanding issue; it goes back to 2019 and it culminated in growing levels of deceit, set aside fraud aspects, so today we take a look back at another meeting from 2022

LISTENING to audio from almost a year ago (we have about 5 hours of audio from last summer; this was shared with staff), it now seems clear that Sirius Open Source had a lot of fantasies while drifting further and further away from well, Open Source.

In the start of summer (2022-06-01) we had a second meeting (out of 3 in total) about the future of the company and studying it in retrospect its easy to understand [crer 168114 witch-hunts], scare tactics etc. Colleagues were subjected to threats and were isolated from their peers. They deemed this approach evil (direct quote).

Much of the meat of the meeting starts a long time after the start with staff thats actually technical (and actually doing all the work, even 24/7) raising questions while the others repeat the same talking points. Basically, managers (which at that point where like half of all the staff) were discussing many options and presenting each. They collected suggestions from staff and eventually threw all of them out. Staff was a bit surprised that after these consultations every suggestion from the staff was rejected. Every single one of them!

One of the self-appointed managers (no relevant skills whatsoever) was discussing the scoring criteria e.g. what will be assessed in appraisals. She was only reading the script/presentation. Its highly probable she was fully aware of the pension fraud and she may have directly participated in that. An opportunistic career-climbing narcissist. The discussi...

The Conscience of Conservatives Is Unconscious "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Brett Stephens, writing in the NYTimes:

Fox was always about influence, as much as money, for Murdoch. But, executed well, it could have elevated conservatism in the direction of Burke, Hamilton and Lincoln, rather than debase it in the direction of Andrew Jackson, Joe McCarthy and Pat Buchanan.

The shame of Rupert Murdoch is that he wasnt the man to do it. It doesnt mean it cant be done.

The shame of conservatives is that not a single one of them is the man or woman to do it.

That Rupert Murdoch failed doesnt mean it cant be done.

That the GOP as a whole has no interest in denouncing insurrection and open invitation to sedition means it cant be done.

When you have zero congressional Republicans moving to expel MTG for her soft secession plan, or any of the other Republicans for their various secession plans (:cough: Texit :cough:) it should be obvious to everyone that there is no conservative voice that is not an echo of Father Coughlin: all the rest have gone silent.

We are told that this is a mere case of laryngitis among the ethical and reasonable Republicans told again and again by people like Bret Stephens.

But this is not that. Whatever the conservatives who consider themselves ethical and rational tell themselves to comfort each other in the night, they have traded their voices to Orange Ursula and are desperately afraid of even attempting to get them back.

There will be no conservative voice of reason, much less intelligence, until the left destroys the new movement for secession and/or fascism.

At that point, voices freed from their magical confinement, Stephens will swoop in and declare victory on behalf of conservative values and lament that trans people dont pay more honour to the heroes who can hate us even while not quite taking to the streets to murder in the cause of installing a government who would shatter our souls, end our lives, and then blame us using our deadnames over our dead bodies for our own genocidal victimization.

Lamenting the imperfections of Murdoch does not make you the man of principle you wish the world to see. Hell, it doesnt even cause us to see a fragment, a shadow of that man in you.

Go home, Stephens. Hide beside the lintel of your door, one hand on a shotgun, never certain until the conflict is over whom you would shoot if you emerged, but too terrified ever to place yourself in the position where you might have to make that choice. Demonstrate all the bravery and heroism of the white Citizens Councils of 1963s Mississippi, before Newt Gingrich could destroy the party you seek to praise, but we seek to bury.

Google Authenticator App now supports Google Account synchronization "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Google announced that its Authenticator app for Android and iOS now supports Google Account synchronization.

Google announced that its Google Authenticator app for both iOS and Android now supports Google Account synchronization that allows to safely backup users one-time codes to their Google Account.

The company states that users over the years have faced the complexity of dealing with lost or stolen devices that had Google Authenticator installed. Since one-time codes in Authenticator were only stored on a single device if a user lost that device will be not able to sign in to any service on which theyd set up 2FA using Authenticator.

With this update were rolling out a solution to this problem, making one time codes more durable by storing them safely in users Google Account. This change means users are better protected from lockout and that services can rely on users retaining access, increasing both convenience and security. reads the announcement.

The feature announced by Google is optional.

To try the new Authenticator with Google Account synchronization, simply update the app and follow the prompts. concludes the announcement.

Redlining Maps Were BurnedBut the Fundamentals Are Still Taught "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

For decades, many banks denied people mortgages because they lived in redlined neighborhoods. This prevented people (even creditworthy borrowers) from purchasing a home or getting a loan to renovate their house, and, more often than not, racial and ethnic minorities lived in neighborhoods marked risky for investment. Beginning in the 1930s, appraisers and lenders would communicate neighborhood value through a map and notes (as seen below). With red ink, they would signify neighborhoods least desirable for approving a loan.

A screenshot pulled from the Richmond.edu website.

Neighborhoods were classified by four colors: grade A, green, for "Best; grade B, blue, for "Still Desirable"; grade C, yellow, for "Definitely Declining"; and grade D, red, for "Hazardous."

This practice of redlining became illegal in the 1960s when The Fair Housing Act made explicit racial discrimination in housing transactions a criminal offense. Since then, property appraisers and lenders do not refer to maps with redlines circling minority neighborhoods to determine neighborhood values, or a person's ability to obtain a mortgage.

However, the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), which teaches appraisers how to categorize a houses value (which in turn represents an individual's ability to obtain a mortgage), still relies on a similar, if not the same, color code to inform both appraisers and assessors about home categorization and true value.

This is a slide from an IAAO course teaching the fundamentals of real property appraisal to both appraisers and assessors. It breaks dow...

Linux 6.3 Debuts After Nice, Controlled Release Cycle "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Linux 6.3 debuts after 'nice, controlled release cycle':

Linux 6.3 has arrived after a push that project boss Linus Torvalds characterized as "a nice, controlled release cycle" that required the seven release candidates he prefers and was supported by helpful developer behavior.

"It happens," he added, but also didn't rule out "something nasty couldn't have been lurking all these weeks." Torvalds therefore urged real-world testing to make sure this release really is ready for prime-time consumption.

Holidays and travel are often the cause of delays to kernel releases. Easter didn't slow development this time around.

Version 6.3 won't be a long term support (LTS) release the last of those was Linux 6.1, and every fifth or sixth release gets LTS status. So while many users will be pleased to see it, 6.3 almost certainly won't be a cut of the kernel that demands adoption or attention.

Which is not to say it doesn't include some interesting goodies.

Among the additions are better support for multi-actuator hard disk drives. Conventional hard disks have one actuator driving a single set of read/write heads. Multi-actuator disks add a second set of heads, which speeds things up nicely. Hyperscale cloud operators are the first big buyers of multi-actuator disks, but they're slowly going mainstream. Now Linux is better able to handle them.

China's Loongson makes RISC-V processors and is working hard and fast to make them an enterprise contender. Linux 6.3 will help that a little by supporting Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization on the company's silicon. This has been around on other architectures for ages security is helped by having the kernel load into different areas of memory each time it boots, instead of using the same locations and giving attackers a known target.

Microsoft coders contributed updates that add nested hypervisor support for Redmond's own Hyper-V hypervisor.

Roadside Drug Tests Used to Convict People Arent Particularly Accurate. Courts Are Beginning to Prevent Their Use. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

One morning in September 2017, Judge Christopher Plourd opened an unusual hearing at the Imperial County Superior Courthouse, a half-hour north of the California-Mexico border. It involved three illegal drug possession cases that were unrelated to one another.

Each of the cases had relied on the results of chemical field test kits used by corrections officers at nearby state prisons. The kits indicated crumbs and shreds of paper that guards found on the inmates contained heroin and amphetamine. But a state forensic laboratory later analyzed the debris utilizing a far more reliable test and found no trace of illegal drugs. The defendants were factually innocent.

Rather than simply close the cases, defense attorneys asked the court to determine whether the NIK Public Safety brand field tests used in Californias prisons were too unreliable to show to grand jurors. In effect, they put on trial the evidence most commonly used to secure convictions in drug cases in the U.S.

Plourd ruled in early 2018 that the test kit does not meet a scientific admissibility standard and therefore does not support the grand jury indictment.

In other words, the tests were guilty.

The Imperial County cases are believed to be the first time a judge blocked field tests from contributing to indictments. In the years since, defendants and inmates in multiple states have scored additional legal victories against agencies using the kits and the companies selling them.

For years, these tests have had this unjustified scientific veneer, said Des Walsh, founder of the Roadside Drug Test Innocence Alliance, which advocates for the use of more accurate testing technology. Finally, we believe the tide is turning with this dawning awareness of the unacceptably high rate of false positives.

In a 2016 series of stories, ProPublica documented law enforcements widespread use of field tests to make arrests and secure co...

A strong undersea earthquake has sent streams of people fleeing to higher ground in western Indonesia, after a tsunami warning was briefly triggered. Footage released by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency showed how streams of people in a village on Mentawai Island fled to the highlands by foot and motorcycles under the rain in darkness early Tuesday, while some patients at the village's hospital were evacuated to its yard as cracks showed in the facility's floor. The shocks were felt in districts and cities of West Sumatra and North Sumatra provinces, and some places ordered evacuations to higher ground. Is the Metropolitan Museum of Art Displaying Objects That Belong to Native American Tribes? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

Stepping into the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Shyanne Beatty was eager to view the Native American works that art collectors Charles and Valerie Diker had been accumulating for nearly half a century. But as she entered the museums American Wing that day in 2018, her excitement turned to shock as two wooden masks came into view.

Beatty, an Alaska Native, had worked on a radio documentary about the two Alutiiq objects and how they and others like them had been plundered from tribal land about 150 years ago. Now, the masks were on display in the biggest and most esteemed art museum in the Western Hemisphere. It was super shocking to me, she said.

The Mets ownership history for the masks, also known as provenance, omits more than a century of their whereabouts. Historians say the masks were taken in 1871. But the museums timeline doesnt start until 2003, when the Dikers bought them from a collector. Ownership was transferred to the Met in 2017.

The Dikers, who have amassed one of the most significant private collections of Native American works, have been donating or lending objects to the Met since 1993. In 2017, as other institutions grappled with returning colonial-era spoils, the Met announced the Dikers gift of another 91 Native American works.

A ProPublica review of records the museum has posted online found that only 15% of the 139 works donated or loaned by the Dikers over the years have solid or complete ownership histories, with some lacking any provenance at all. Most either have no histories listed, leave gaps in ownership ranging from 200 to 2,000 years or identify previous owners in such vague terms as an English gentleman and a family in Scotland.

Washingtons Puppet: The Rise and Fall of Volodmyr Zelenskyy "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

In my book, The Road to Fascism, I argued that, although fascism has returned to the political economy, laws and ideology of the West in the form of our governance by unelected international technocracies, the suspension of our previously inalienable human rights under a more-or-less permanent state of exception, and our indoctrination into behaviours of compliance, censorship and violence by the orthodoxies of woke the figure of the leader, with which historical fascism is so closely associated in the form of the Italian Duce, German Fhrer and Spanish Caudillo, has not. But watching the rise of the newly-butch, paramilitary figure into which Volodmyr Zelenskyy the former dance-show contestant and soap-opera comedian has transformed, Im not now so sure.

Its a rigorously suppressed fact that Zelenskyy is the second US puppet to occupy the office of President since the US-engineered coup overthrew the democratically-elected government of the Ukraine in 2014, and that the war were constantly told began when Russian forces moved into the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine in February 2022 in actuality started eight years earlier, when the majority Russian-speaking population formed itself into a peoples militia and rose up against the intervention of the USA in their country.

Zelenskyy was elected as President in May 2019 on a promise to end the resulting civil war in the Donbas, and until the Russian intervention he appeared on the media platforms of the West in the role of a diminutive, clean-shaven, suited-and-booted office boy, trying to work out the dramatic arc of his new character. This was no longer as the star of the television show, Servant of the People ( ), in which he had played the gun-toting President of the Ukraine since 2015, but as the actual President of a country for which the USA had very definite plans. To his obvious confusion, his new status as a Reality TV star didnt preclude him from, for example, being humiliated by Donald Trump on US television as the whipping boy for the most corrupt nation in Europe that was ripe for salvation from its Russian oppressor.

Then all that changed last year. A few months in the gym, a new designer beard, imitation army fatigues embroidered with a golden trident,...

Engagement Ring Rules: When to Break Them and When to Follow Them 2023 Guide "IndyWatch Feed World"

Getting engaged is a major milestone in a couples life. It signifies the start of a new chapter and is often accompanied by the presentation of an engagement ring. Engagement rings have been a tradition for centuries, and with time, a set of rules have developed around them. But, like any tradition, these rules are meant to be broken. Heres a guide on when to follow them and when to break them.

Rule 1: Spend Two Months Salary on the Ring

Source: hitched.co.uk

This is a widely known rule that says you should spend two months worth of your salary on an engagement ring. However, this rule doesnt account for your financial situation, which is unique to you. If you can afford it, great! But if its going to put you in a difficult financial situation, its best to break this rule.

Instead, opt for the one that fits within your budget. There are many beautiful rings available that wont break the bank. For example, engagement rings London are the perfect way to find so many options that will suit any budget.

Rule 2: Diamonds Are a Must

Diamonds are the traditional stone for engagement rings. However, not everyone wants a diamond ring. Some people prefer gemstones or alternative stones like moissanite or cubic zirconia. If your partner has a specific stone in mind, its best to go with their preference rather than sticking to tradition.

If you do decide to go with diamonds, its important to note that the four Cs cut, color, clarity, and carat weight are essential to consider when selecting a diamond. The cut refers to the diamonds proportions, while the color refers to the presence or absence of color in the diamond. Clarity refers to the diamonds imperfections, and carat weight refers to the diamonds size.

U.S. Department of Defense issued a contract for 'COVID-19 Research' in Ukraine 3 months before Covid was known to even exist "IndyWatch Feed World"

The world first started to hear about a novel coronavirus in early January 2020, with reports of an alleged new pneumonia like illness spreading across Wuhan, China. However, the world did not actually know of Covid-19 until February 2020, because it was not until the 11th of that month that the World Health Organisation officially named the novel coronavirus disease as Covid-19. So with this being the official truth, why does United States Government data show that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) awarded a contract on the 12th November 2019 to Labyrinth Global Health INC. for 'COVID-19 Research', at least one month before the alleged emergence of the novel coronavirus, and three months before it was officially dubbed Covid-19? The shocking findings, however, do not end there. The contract awarded in November 2019 for 'COVID-19 Research' was not only instructed to take place in Ukraine, it was in fact part of a much larger contract for a 'Biological threat reduction program in...

Even slime doesnt last (Non-fiction) "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As PZ mentioned, the Slymepit, a relic from Elevatorgate, gave up the ghost. Before Gamergate, they were pioneering crowdsourced harassment and disinformation. Their targets included Rebecca Watson, PZ, Surly Amy, and too many other advocating social justice within atheist and skeptical organizations. That included the organizers of Atheism+, an attempt to form a progressive secular organization. Slympitters twisted the term Atheism+ in the same way Republicans twisted the term Woke today.

According to RationalWiki, the Slymepit moved on to other targets after Elevatorgate:

In 2020, the Slymepit raged against vaccination and in support of the Taliban. In 2022, the Slymepit enthusiastically supports Vladimir Putin and his attack on Ukraine, heaping praise on the denazification goals of the attack, and mocking the suffering of the Ukrainian people. Commonly posted memes compare Ukrainian women and children, including infants, to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, mocking both for their fears of sexual assault while excusing or even glorifying the assailants, openly praising the equivalences between the two groups. It is almost as bad as before 2020, when posters to the Slymepit explicitly endorsed misogyny, slavery, Richard Dawkins, and genocide.

They only noticed me once, and that was before I joined FTB. They didnt know what to make of a Babbler psychic prediction that one of their members would convert to Catholicism, promptly get excommunicated, and ending up sending 95 tweets to the Pope. They decided to move on instead of bothering me. Its probably just as well that they never noticed my first novel, The Rift: A Bolingbrook Babbler Story. The character Marty would have loved posting there. Im also sure Trevor would have been a guest on a certain someones YouTube channel.

Unfortunately, the bigotry behind the Slymepit lives on through Trumpism, groups like the Proud Boys, and the transgender panic. There will also be atheists who will choose to work with oppressors rather than similar marginalized groups. Their only concern with Christian Nationalism is the Christian part.

There will also be atheists that strive to create positive changes. Even the American Humanist Association and American Atheists have tried to become more diverse organizations. Anti-harassment policies are the norm now. The Slymepit caused real harm to progressive atheists, but it didnt kill the ideas.

The fight for social justice in the world is far from over. But, for now, Ill enjoy knowing that Freethought Blogs is still around while the Slymep...

Indias Jal Jeevan Mission Provides Water To 80 Million Households In 4 Years "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Daily Guardian

Having access to water isnt something we think about. After all, this has become accessible for most countries. Our homes have been built with a sink and some pipes that connect us to the precious fluid. Unfortunately, we also forgot that not everyone has this kind of luxury.

In India, for instance, some homes dont have access to tap water. People have to walk and carry around heavy buckets in order to wash their dishes and clothes. Until fairly recently, many of them were required to work hard just to get access to water.

Indias Jal Jeevan Mission of tap water access has been a success. In fact, they are considered to be one of the great, unsung stories that people should know about. Not much has been shared about this story, but its high time that the rest of the world should know about them.

Thats because almost 79 million households finally have been given access to a tap water connection since they launched the program last August 2019. In the years that followed, they now have provided water to a total of 111 million, or 56 percent of rural households in India, which is a feat that no one has ever achieved for them in the past.

After decades of struggle, the Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek First Nation (Grassy Narrows) has secured a major win in their fight to stop clear-cutting on their lands. This month, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry notified the first nation that they are abandoning plans to open a portion of the forest to commercial logging, placing a 10-year logging ban on the land. The decision follows years of blockading logging roads on the territory, marching on the Ontario legislature, and taking legal action against the Ontario government.

Indigenous warriors have continued to hold it down at Camp Morgan Harris near the Brady Landfill outside Winnipeg. Folks have been intermittently blocking access to the landfill, and are holding strong in their calls to have the landfill searched for missing and murdered Indigenous women. On April 10th, the body of Linda Beardy, a woman from Lake St. Martin First Nation, was found at the site. Folks at the camp have called for others to join them, donate, or drop off supplies.

Names Of Some Mysterious Trees In Forest Of  Urhobo Community "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

TREE

OGRIKI.

Known as door because it sees outside and inside of the town / village. To find a place to dwell you must plant Ogriki tree first at the center. Every spirit in that area will now move to live with the Ogriki and under it people will be communicating with different types of spirit. Having sex in the bush where theres  Ogriki tree or where we cannot hear the sound of cockcraw is considered abomination. For example, you can see the Ogriki trees at Ekpan shrine.

 ULOHO

Believed to be the most respected tree in the land. Traditional believers do take food to Oloho, dress it with white or red cloth and worship it. Oloho always stands taller than other trees wherever you find them.
You can see Uloho in the bush or places like Udogu Okpe opposite Kings palace Orerokpe.
Uloho can never be cut down and even if  you succeed, the root will spring up again and continue to grow and become Uloho tree again.
To cut down Uloho you must make some sacrifices.

AKALAMUDO

This is another mysterious tree, it does not share its leafs at the end or beginning of the year. Its leafs remain the same year in year out. Akalamudo produces fruits that burst out with flies flying out of them until they dies seven days later.
To cut Akalamudo down you need to perform some sacrifices.

AKPOBISI/AKPOBRISI.

Believed to be the most dangerous tree in the forest. The more it grows the more it kills other trees. Akpobisi is known as the spirit filled tree, it serves as home to another spirit Urhobo called Aziza, it can be spelled forward and backward and gives you the same Aziza, other parts of Urhobo calls it Oklobogbowo because it has only one leg and hand but in foam of human being moving around with the power of the wind.
Under Akpobisi tree, you will not see dried leafs and it looks like someone is sweeping it every morning.

Its only native doctors with diabolical power that can have access to have contact with Akpobisi. But innocent people can  have contact with it unknowingly.

ICHAKPA

It looks like tree and also flower in form of dwalf, remains not growing and it never dies unless uprooted. Ichakpa serves as a boundary between owners of lands.

Sudan Factions Agree to 72-hour Ceasefire as Foreigners Evacuated

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the truce deal followed intense negotiations over the past two days.

24 Apr 2023

Warring factions in Sudan have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire while Western, Arab and Asian nations raced to extract their citizens from the country.

The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) said the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce, scheduled to start at midnight local time (22:00 GMT Monday).

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that the ceasefire deal followed two days of intense negotiations. Sudans army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have not abided by several temporary truce deals over the past week.

During this period, the United States urges the SAF and RSF to immediately and fully uphold the ceasefire. To support a durable end to the fighting, the United States will coordinate with regional and international partners, and Sudanese civilian stakeholders, Blinken said in a statement.

Fighting erupted between the army and the RSF paramilitary group on April 15 and has killed at least 427 people, knocked out hospitals and other services, and turned residential areas into war zones. Millions of people remain trapped in their homes in the capital Khartoum and are running short on food and water.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the violence in a country that flanks the Red Sea, Horn of Africa and Sahel regions risks a catastrophic conflagration that could engulf the whole region and beyond.

He urged the 15 members of the UN Security Council to use their clout to return Sudan to the path of democratic transition after a 2021 military coup that followed the fall of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising.

We must all do everything within our power to pull Sudan back from the edge of the abyss We stand with them at this terrible time, Guterres said, adding that he had authorised temporary relocation of some UN personnel and families.

The Security Council has planned a meeting on Sudan on Tu...

Erdogan Proposes Negotiations in Turkey to End War in Sudan

April 23, 2023 (KHARTOUM) A Sudanese diplomatic official disclosed to the Sudan Tribune that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested to Sudans military leaders to hold negotiations in Turkey.

The ongoing military conflicts between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have lasted for nine days, resulting in sporadic clashes in various regions of Khartoum.

According to the diplomatic official, Erdogan in phone calls over the past two days, spoke to Al-Burhan and Hemetti, conveying Turkeys desire to mediate an end to the war.

The Turkish leader offered to host direct negotiations in Ankara, with assurances to the rapid support commander, the official added.

There is no clear indication of the two mens position on the Turkish proposal.

However, sources have confirmed that Al-Burhan refused to negotiate with the commander of the Rapid Support Forces before they withdrew from Khartoum.

For his part, Hemetti told Sky News Arabia on Sunday that he refuses to negotiate with al-Burhan, but accepts to sit with the honourable members of the Sudan Armed Forces.

In a separate development, three Gulf countries on April 22, proposed an initiative for the conflicting military parties to resolve the crisis and stop the violent confrontations in Khartoum.

In addition, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken contacted his counterparts in Sudans neighbouring countries to extend the humanitarian truce that ends on April 25, 2023.

Due to the destruction of several central markets caused by the war, a severe food crisis has emerged in Khartoum.

Residents of Khartoum have fled to other neighbourhoods and states to avoid the bloody confrontations between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

There have also been reports of attacks and looting by the Rapid Support Forces against families trying to leave the capital.

Sudanese Army Accuses RSF of Obstructing Evacuation Operations from Khartoum

A convoy leaving Khartoum, Sudans capital, advances on a road toward Port Sudan, on April 23, 2023 (AFP photo)

April 24, 2023 (KHARTOUM) Sudans army has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of impeding the evacuation of Qatari and French nationals from Khartoum amidst ongoing clashes in the capital city.

Despite the unrest in Khartoum, several countries are continuing to evacuate their diplomats and nationals through various means to ensure their safety. Port Sudan airport has been utilized by countries such as Qatar and Jordan, while the United States, Britain, Germany, and France have relied on the Wadi Seidna military air base.

According to the Sudanese army, its troops have successfully facilitated the evacuation of several diplomatic missions.

However, the army spoke about attempts to disrupt the process by intercepting the Qatari and French missions. Reportedly, the Qatari mission was looted, while the French mission was forced to return and delay its departure.

While the Sudanese army has condemned the RSFs actions, the nature of the attacks remains unclear.

Meanwhile, RSFs second commander issued a statement on Sunday directing his forces not to hinder the evacuations of foreign nationals.

In Paris, The foreign ministry said that 388 people have been evacuated from Khartoum to Djibouti.

The operation included French nationals who wanted to and Europeans from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Romania, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Also, the French army evacuated people from some African countries: South Africa, Burundi, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Uganda, Rwanda, as well as U.S, Canadian, Indian, Japanese and Philippines.

The French army will continue evacuation operations from Khartoum, underscored the statement.

427 Dead, Thousands Injured Due to Conflict in Sudan: OCHA

April 23, 2023 (KHARTOUM) At least 427 people have died across the country, with over 3,700 injured as result of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan said on Friday.

The clashes, which started in April 15, have shown no sign of letting up in Sudans capital despite repeated calls for ceasefire from the international community.

OCHA said an aid worker from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) was killed two days ago after the vehicle he was traveling in with his family south of El Obeid, North Kordofan, was caught in a crossfire between warring parties.

This, it stated, brings to five the total number of aid workers killed since April 15.

The UN humanitarian agency, citing the IOMs Displacement Tracking Matrix, also cited an increased in displacement due to fighting and dwindling basic commodities have also been reported across the states of Khartoum, El Gezira, Sennar, White Nile, River Nile and El Gedaref.

Reports estimated that between 7,500 and 8,000 people have been displaced from El Obeid and are currently seeking refuge, following fierce SAF-RSF clashes.

In North Darfurs capital of El Fasher, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 displaced people, most of whom were women and children, arrived in Chad on Friday.

South Sudans IOM representative in Juba Peter Van Der Auweraert said that at least 2,000 people arrived in the capital today, according multiple media reports.

He, however, said they expect more vulnerable people to come at a later stage, as many of the people who made it to Juba had the means to make it here.

Meanwhile following the suspension of humanitarian operations in Sudan due to various aid workers being killed as well as the near-impossible ground situation hindering their activity, local civil society actors have since provided aid.

Neighbourhood committees in multiple locations have established emergency roo...

Diplomats Flee Sudan Fighting as Citizens Struggle to Escape

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) Foreign governments evacuated diplomats, staff and others from Sudan on Sunday as rival generals battled for a ninth day with no sign of a truce that had been declared for a major Muslim holiday.

While world powers like the U.S. and Britain airlifted their diplomats from the capital of Khartoum, Sudanese desperately sought to flee the chaos. Many risked dangerous roads to cross the northern border into Egypt.

My family my mother, my siblings and my nephews are on the road from Sudan to Cairo through Aswan, prominent Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abual-Ala wrote on Facebook.

Fighting raged in Omdurman, a city across the Nile River from Khartoum, residents said, despite a hoped-for cease-fire to coincide with the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

We did not see such a truce, Amin al-Tayed said from his home near state TV headquarters in Omdurman, adding that heavy gunfire and thundering explosions rocked the city.

Over 420 people, including 264 civilians, have been killed and over 3,700 wounded in fighting between the Sudanese armed forces and the powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces. The RSF said the armed forces unleashed airstrikes on the upscale neighborhood of Kafouri, north of Khartoum. There was no immediate army comment.

The ongoing violence has affected operations at the main international airport, destroying civilian planes and damaging at least one runway, and thick, black smoke rose above it. Other airports also have been knocked out of operation.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell tweeted he had spoken with the rival commanders, urging an immediate cease-fire to protect civilians and the evacuation of EU citizens.

In other fighting, a senior military official said it repelled an RSF attack on Kober Prison in Khartoum where Sudans longtime ruler, Omar al-Bashir, and former officials in his movement have been held since his 2019 ouster. The official, who...

MoFA  Refutes Rumors of Ethiopias Interference in Sudan

April 23, 2023

Closely follows safety of citizens

 BY HAILE DEMEKE

ADDIS ABABA The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has refuted some medias allegation of Ethiopias meddling in the ongoing conflict in Sudan and mentioned that such accusation emanates from the desire to regionalize the problem.

Speaking to local media, MoFA Spokesperson Ambassador Meles Alem said some media outlets presentation of Ethiopias involvement in the conflict is false and inconsistent with the historic friendship between the two countries.

The relations between Ethiopia and Sudan have not been swayed by the change of  governments and Ethiopia is always on the side of the people of Sudan so that they can overcome the current challenges.

Recalling Ethiopian leaders unwavering commitment to Sudans peace, the spokesperson retreated the current governments desire and readiness to extend such historical role and help the warring parties to resolve their differences in negotiation. Ethiopia has a firm belief that the people of Sudan will solve their problems by their own wisdom and without any foreign intervention.

Following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan, the MoFA is closely monitoring the safety of Ethiopians through the Embassy in Khartoum. To this end, a task force consisting of various offices and states that share a border with Sudan has been established at the national level. It is to be recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) made a call to those who work to provoke conflict between Ethiopia and Sudan to refrain from their actions.

In a message he delivered in Arabic, the Premier warned those who are working to incite conflict between the brotherly people of Ethiopia and Sudan to refrain from their actions. There are people who are trying to achieve their political goals by spreading false accusations at this critical time when the people of Sudan and Ethiopia are facing many challenges.

According to Abiy, the...

Pacifying Sudan is Pacifying East Africa and Beyond

April 20, 2023

Peace and stability of one country is also important for the neighbor and the region especially when the issue is likely to have a spillover effect.

So is the case in Sudan. The situation there matters not only for Sudan itself but also for the entire East Africa, as well as the continent at large. Therefore, global and continental institutions should play their role to broker and ensure peace in Sudan before the situation gets worse.

First of all the steps to seek peace in Sudan should emanate out of genuine friendship with the peace-loving people. The people of Sudan have more than enough of the brunt of war, communal strife and unrest. They have lost innumerable lives of civilians. They have suffered protracted war. The country has also fallen in continuous unrest since the upheaval that broke out seeking justice and democracy and ended up with the overthrow of the long-serving former President Omar Al Bashir.

The unwavering stance of the people to see a legitimate civil government is wise and justifiable. Their strong peaceful movement to establish a democratically elected government is also a principled quest towards democracy. This is a sovereign and legitimate quest that is raised by anyone anywhere in the world.

Therefore the political forces that are ruling the country at the moment would rather stop engaging in conflict and resort to peaceful means to respond to the underlying quest of the people. They should take a lesson from the experience in the Horn countries concerning the zero-sum game behind pursuing conflict as a means to achieving ones interest. At the end of the day, it is the interest of the people that needs to prevail over others. The interest of the people of Sudan, like all others is peace, democracy and justice.

The ultimate and best way to these desires is peaceful dialogue. The application of peaceful means is not a new practice in Sudan. It is a long-ingrained political and social culture of the people as expressed by...

Ethiopia Government and Oromo Rebels to Hold Talks

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressing members of parliament.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Sunday evening that peace talks would begin on Tuesday with the OLA, a rebel group active in the country's largest and most populous region of Oromia, which surrounds the capital Addis Ababa.

"Peace negotiations" with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) "will begin on Tuesday in Tanzania," Mr Abiy said. "The Ethiopian government and people are in dire need of this negotiation (...) I call on everyone to play their part.

In a statement issued overnight, the OLA "confirms Abiy Ahmed's statements and can attest that the Ethiopian regime has accepted our conditions for peace negotiations, which include the participation of an independent third party mediator and a commitment to maintain transparency throughout the process".

"Since the beginning of the conflict, OLA has consistently called for peaceful dialogue as the only viable solution," the organisation continued, "it is heartening to see that the regime has finally come to the same conclusion.

Neither Mr Abiy nor the OLA specified who the mediator would be, in which city the talks would be held and in what format.

Mr Abiy was speaking at a ceremony for participants and sponsors of the peace process in Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia where a peace agreement signed on 2 November ended two years of conflict between the Ethiopian government and regional authorities who rebelled against the federal government.

The "official" OLA has been fighting the Ethiopian federal government since it split in 2018 with the historic Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which renounced armed struggle that year.

It has given birth to a nebulous group of armed groups claiming to be its own but with loose links.

Estimated at a few thousand men in 2018, the OLA's strength has increased significantly in recent years, although observers consider it insufficiently organi...
