Johns Hopkins study shows lockdowns only reduced COVID-19 death rate by .2% "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Lockdowns during the first COVID-19 wave in the spring of 2020 only reduced COVID-19 mortality by .2% in the U.S. and Europe, according to a Johns Hopkins University meta-analysis of several studies. "While this meta-analysis concludes that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted," the researchers wrote. "In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument." The researchers Johns Hopkins University economics professor Steve Hanke, Lund University economics professor Lars Jonung, and special advisor at Copenhagen's Center for Political Studies Jonas Herby analyzed the effects of lockdown measures such as school shutdowns, business closures, and mask mandates on COVID-19 deaths. "We find little to no evidence that mandated lockdowns in Europe and the United States had a noticeable effect on COVID-19 mortality rates," the researchers wrote. The researchers also examined shelter-in-place orders, finding that they reduced COVID-19 mortality by 2.9%. Studies that looked at only shelter-in-place orders found they reduced COVID-19 mortality by 5.1%, but studies that looked at shelter-in-place orders along with other lockdown measures found that shelter-in-place orders actually increased COVID-19 mortality by 2.8%. The researchers concluded that limiting gatherings may have actually increased COVID-19 mortality.

Lockdowns in the U.S. and Europe had little or no impact in reducing deaths from COVID-19 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Lockdowns in the U.S. and Europe had little or no impact in reducing deaths from COVID-19, according to a new analysis by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. The lockdowns during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020 reduced COVID-19 mortality by about 0.2%, said the broad review of multiple scientific studies. "We find no evidence that lockdowns, school closures, border closures, and limiting gatherings have had a noticeable effect on COVID-19 mortality," the researchers wrote. But the research paper said lockdowns did have "devastating effects" on the economy and contributed to numerous social ills. "They have contributed to reducing economic activity, raising unemployment, reducing schooling, causing political unrest, contributing to domestic violence, and undermining liberal democracy," the report said. "Such a standard benefit-cost calculation leads to a strong conclusion: lockdowns should be rejected out of hand as a pandemic policy instrument," the paper concluded. Early on, many states and 186 countries imposed bans on work, socialization, in-person schooling, travel and other restrictions to limit the spread of the disease, citing recommendations by top health care experts. Researchers at the Imperial College London, for example, predicted that such steps could reduce death rates by up to 98%. That never happened, according to the new study by researchers Steve Hanke, Jonas Herby, and Lars Jonung at Johns Hopkins.

8% Of Americans Think They Could Beat A Lion In A Fistfight "IndyWatch Feed World"

A recent survey conducted by YouGov in 2018 found that 8% of Americans believe they could win a fist fight against a lion in a hand-to-hand combat situation. While this statistic may seem humorous or absurd, it is important to understand the dangers and consequences of such a belief.

Lions are apex predators and are known for their strength, speed, and ferocity. They are powerful animals that have evolved to hunt and kill prey much larger and stronger than themselves. Even trained professionals, such as zookeepers and wildlife experts, do not engage in physical combat with lions, as it is far too dangerous and often deadly.

Believing that a human could defeat a lion in a fistfight is not only unfounded but also dangerous. Attempting to engage in a physical altercation with a lion could result in serious injury or death, not only to the person attempting the fight but also to the lion.

It is important to understand that wild animals are not pets and should be respected and admired from a safe distance. Interacting with them in any way that could put human or animal life at risk is illegal and highly irresponsible.

Furthermore, the belief that humans can overpower and defeat wild animals such as lions can be harmful to conservation efforts. It can promote a sense of false bravado and encourage dangerous behavior toward wildlife, which can ultimately harm ecosystems and wildlife populations.

It is essential to educate the public on the importance of responsible wildlife conservation practices, including respecting animals and their habitats and avoiding dangerous interactions with wildlife.

In conclusion, the belief that a human can defeat a lion in a fistfight is both dangerous and unfounded. Interacting with wild animals in any way that could risk human or animal life is irresponsible and can harm conservation efforts. Educating the public on the importance of responsible wildlife conservation practices to ensure the protection and preservation of wildlife and their habitats is crucial.

The Herber quakes reached up to 3.7 in magnitude and were felt by about 60 people. The second swarm struck nearly 40 miles north, by the town of Niland, where more than 25 tremors then shook the southeast shore of the Salton Sea starting at 12.09 a.m. Sunday. Those earthquakes lasted until 5:28 a.m. and reached a higher magnitude of 4.5, which was felt by about 30 people, UGS said.

Whither Ukraines counteroffensive? "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY M. K. BHADRAKUMAR | INDIAN PUNCHLINE | MAY 2, 2023

The month of May has arrived but without the long-awaited Ukrainian counteroffensive. The western media is speculating that it may come by late May. There is also the spin that Kiev is judicious to buy time.

The chances of Ukraine making some sort of breakthrough in the 950-km long Russian frontline cannot be ruled out but a Russian counteroffensive is all but certain to follow. An open-ended war will not suit Western powers.

Last week, NATOs top commander, US Army General Christopher Cavoli stated that the Russian army operating in Ukraine is larger than when the Kremlin launched its special military operation and the Ukrainians have to be better than the Russian force they will face and decide when and where they will strike.

Cavoli said Russia has strategic depth in manpower and has only lost one warship and about 80 fighters and tactical bombers in an air fleet numbering about 1,000 so far. The general gently contradicted Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chief of General Staff Gen. Mark Milley who have been propagating that Russia is on the brink of defeat.

Speaking at the House panel on Wednesday, Gen. Cavoli said, This war is far from over. On Thursday, he went further to tell the Senate, I think [the Russians] can fight another year. At the House hearing, Cavoli also said Russian submarine activity has only picked up in the North Atlantic since the beginning of the war and none of the Kremlins strategic nuclear forces have been affected by operations in Ukraine.

He said at one point in his written testimony, Russian air, maritime, space, cyber, and strategic forces have not suffered significant degradation in the current war. Moreover, Russia will likely rebuild its future Army into a sizeable and more capable land force Russia retains a vast stockpile of deployed and non-deployed nuclear weapons, which present an existential threat to the US.

Clearly, the entire narrative of lies and obfuscation created by the neocons in the Biden Administration through the past year has unravelled. The balance sheet shows there is nothing to justify the massive amount of aid to Ukraine through the past one-year period in excess of $100 billion dollars, which is pro rata vastly more than what the US had spent in the twenty years of war in Afghanistan. ...

Saturn exhibits behavior never seen before in our solar system: 'Hiding in plain view for 40 years' "IndyWatch Feed World"

The secret has been hiding in plain view for 40 years. But it took the insight of a veteran astronomer to pull it all together within a year, using observations of Saturn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and retired Cassini probe, in addition to the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and the retired International Ultraviolet Explorer mission. The discovery: Saturn's vast ring system is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere. The phenomenon has never before been seen in the solar system. It's an unexpected interaction between Saturn and its rings that potentially could provide a tool for predicting if planets around other stars have glorious Saturn-like ring systems, too. The telltale evidence is an excess of ultraviolet radiation, seen as a spectral line of hot hydrogen in Saturn's atmosphere. The bump in radiation means that something is contaminating and heating the upper atmosphere from the outside.

A Proposal for a UN Freedom of Information Act Never Got Off the Ground "IndyWatch Feed War"

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, May 1 2023 (IPS)* The United Nations has consistently been a vociferous advocate of freedom of the press and, most importantly, the right of journalists to report without fear of reprisals.

Credit: UNESCO Attribution 3.0 IGO

But regrettably, the UN is also one of most opaque institutions where transparency is never the norm.Journalists, rarely if ever, were able to get any on-the-record comments or reactions from ambassadors, diplomats and senior UN officials because most of them follow the advice given to Brits during war-time censorship in the UK: Be like Dad, Keep Mum.

As Winston Churchill once remarked: Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions.

But as a general rule, most ambassadors and diplomats did not tell us either to go to hell or heaven but avoided all comments on politically-sensitive issues with the standard non-excuse: Sorry, we have to get clearance from our capital.

But that clearance from their respective foreign ministries never came. Still, it was hard to beat a response from a tight-lipped Asian diplomat who told me: No comment and as an after-thought, added: And Dont Quote Me on That.

And most senior UN officials, on the other hand, never had even the basic courtesy or etiquette to respond to phone calls or email messages even with an acknowledgment. The lines of communications were mostly dead.

When I complained to the media-savvy Shashi Tharoor, a former UN Under-Secretary-General, head of the one-time Department of Public Information (DPI) and a prolific author, he was explicit in his response when he said that every UN official from an Under-Secretary-General to a window-washerhas the right to express an opinion in his or her area of expertise.

The US Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which dates back to 1967, has provided the public and mostly the press in the...

Murdoch Spoke on Phone With Zelenskyy Weeks Before Tucker Carlson Left Fox News "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Paul Joseph Watson | Summit News | May 2, 2023

More speculation as to the reason behind Tucker Carlsons departure from Fox News is raging after it was revealed that Rupert Murdoch held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy weeks beforehand.

Some have argued that Carlsons vehement opposition to the United States deepening involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict was a primary reason as to why he left the network.

Indeed, as we highlighted last week, members of the military-industrial complex celebrated the Fox News hosts departure, with one senior DoD official declaring, good riddance!

Now it turns out that Murdoch had been in communication with Zelenskyy back in March.

Fox News Executive Chairman Rupert Murdoch held a previously unreported call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this spring in which the two discussed the war and the anniversary of the deaths of Fox News journalists last March, reports Semafor.

The Ukrainian president had a similar conversation with Lachlan Murdoch on March 15, which Zelenskyy noted in a little-noticed aside during a national broadcast last month.

The conversations came weeks before the Murdochs fired their biggest star and most outspoken critic of American support for Ukraine, Tucker Carlson. Senior Ukrainian officials had made their objections to Carlsons coverage known to Fox executives, but Zelenskyy did not raise it on the calls with the Murdochs, according to one person familiar with the details of the calls.

The report also notes that Carlson had previously described Zelenskyy as a dictator and that him leaving Fox has now relieved pressure on Republicans who have vehemently supported Ukraine.

As Chris Menahan points out, at around the same time of the Murdoch-Zelensky phone call, Tucker told Redacted host Clayton Morris that he felt he may be fired for his stance on Ukraine.

Im saying what I really think and I think it really really matters and if I get fired for it, I dont know what to say, Im not going to change, Carlson said.

He also revealed that a top boss at Fox News texted him to say, For the record, I really disagree with you on Ukraine!

Carlsons opposition to big pharma corruption has also been cited as a reason for his dismissal, given the jaw-dropping amount of advertising money news networks make from pharmaceutical companies.

Careful Now "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Should we blow up pipelines?

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 28th April 2023

Theres a fundamental principle that should apply to every conflict. Dont urge others to do what you are not prepared to do yourself. How many wars would be fought if the presidents or prime ministers who declared them were obliged to lead their troops into battle?

I can see why How to Blow Up a Pipeline, the book by Andreas Malm which has inspired a new film with the same title, has captured imaginations. It offers a lively and persuasive retelling of the history of popular protest, showing how violence and sabotage have been essential components of most large and successful transformations, many of which have been mischaracterised by modern campaigners as entirely peaceful.

Malm shows how violence was a crucial component of the campaigns against slavery, imperial rule in India, apartheid and Britains poll tax, of the demand for womens suffrage and even of the famously peaceful revolutions in Iran and Egypt. He argues that by ruling out violence and sabotage, those of us who seek to defend the habitable planet are fighting with our hands tied behind our backs. He urges us to develop a radical flank, prepared to demolish, burn, blow up or use any other means necessary against CO2-emitting property.

Its essential that we know these histories. Malm forces us to confront questions of strategy and to justify or reject those we have chosen. No one can deny that current campaigns have failed: capitals assaults on the living planet have only accelerated. Nor can we deny that, as he says, we have been too placid and composed or that the climate crisis is insufficiently politicised. Should we, as he urges, begin a campaign of violent attacks on the industrial economy? While his case is compelling, I feel something is missing.

Malms strongest comparisons are with the heroic struggles of womens rights and civil rights activists, anti-slavery, independence, anti-apartheid and economic justice campaigners. These movements directly confronted massive powers. Their outcomes were, in most cases, binary. Either the British Raj persisted or it didnt. Either women would get the vote or they wouldnt. Either there was a poll tax or there wasnt.

But the revolt against environmental collapse is a revolt against the entire system. To prevent the destruction of the habitable planet, every aspect of our economic lives has to change.

Malm reduces our task to the struggle against fossil fuels. But fossil fuels are just one of the drivers of climate breakdown, albeit the largest, and climate breakdown is...

Testing for Manipulation: A Case Study from Colombia "IndyWatch Feed War"

On April 17, Colombias President Gustavo Petro took to Twitter and wrote Manipulations of the extreme right. Lies as the basis of politics. Here, Camilo proves photo manipulation. He referred to a tweet by the journalist Camilo Andrs Garca, who shared an analysis by Ghost, a filter used in conjunction with other image analysis tools, to support his doubts about the authenticity of a photo of a man in camouflage standing by a road in the Colombian countryside.

This man, wearing a red bandana, stands in view of a flag of the far-left National Liberation Army (ELN), a guerilla group which fought the government in a long-running conflict which has seen hundreds of thousands of Colombians killed. While a 2016 peace agreement saw another guerilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) come to terms with the Colombian government, peace talks with the ELN are ongoing, with Petro previously pledging to bring total peace to Colombia.

President Petro, himself a former guerilla, has been described by international media as the countrys first leftist president. Meanwhile Paloma Valencia, who first shared the image on Twitter on April 15 and another photo two days later, is a senator for a right-wing opposition party. On April 17, Valencia also shared video footage of armed men entering a town.

Fact-checking website ColombiaCheck asked Bellingcat for help in verifying the photo and assessing claims about its possible manipulation. The websites editor Jos Sarmiento explained the political context of the claim, noting that Petros total peace approach of negotiating with illegal armed groups has angered Colombias right-wing. He added that Valencia has been one of the leading voices against such processes and that she argues that armed groups only use them as opportunities to grow stronger.

The idea behind her tweet was to show that Petro is letting this happen because they believe that as a former guerilla man himself he is close to...

Technophobia is not a clinical diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). How To Use FinOps As A Tool In The Fight Against Rising Cloud Costs "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Scott Sellers is the co-founder and CEO of Azul, with 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur and executive in the technology industry.

For the first time in a decade, controlling cloud costs has surpassed security as the top cloud management challenge facing IT professionals, according to a survey by Flexera. An Andreessen Horowitz study also said that up to $1 trillion in market capitalization is weighed down by overspending in the cloud. Today, challenging economic conditions, rising costs, increasingly stringent performance SLAs and the need for more resources are squeezing organizations that want to remain in the cloud without overspending.

Many organizations still struggle to connect the dots between the value they deliver via the cloud and the costs required to deliver that value. Without a clear understanding of that basic relationship, it is difficult for teams to hold productive conversations about costs. Engineering departments dont know what to prioritize; cloud architects lack a direction on designing, developing and managing solutions; product managers face difficulties pricing their solutions; and executives wonder where all the money is going.

U.K. Could Lose 75% of its Energy Supply by 2050 "IndyWatch Feed War"

BY CHRIS MORRISON | THE DAILY SCEPTIC | MAY 2, 2023

The United Kingdom is likely to have barely a quarter of the energy in 2050 promised by the Government and its Climate Change Committee if all the legal obligations of Net Zero are followed. This shocking news is forecast by the latest energy review recently published by U.K. FIRES. Government-funded U.K FIRES writes that the whole excitement of its project has been to recognise that such a shortfall is close to a certain reality. Excitement is not perhaps a word that comes immediately to mind when contemplating Britains almost certain economic and societal collapse.

As we have noted before in the Daily Sceptic, UK FIRES bases its recommendations on the brutal, and many would argue, honest reality of Net Zero. It does not assume that technological processes still to be perfected, or even invented, will somehow lead to minimal disturbance in comfortable industrialised lifestyles. Speaking to architects in 2021 at a RIBA climate conference, UK FIRES leader, Cambridge-based Professor Julian Allwood, said the UK Net Zero strategy is as unrealistic as magic beans fertilised by unicorns blood.

It can be argued that the 5 million of taxpayer funding to UK FIRES is money well spent since its honest Net Zero appraisals contrast with the fanciful stories and deceit that surround many other claims by Net Zero promoters.

Getting Ready for Act 2 of the Great American Eclipse "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

It seems like only yesterday that the Great American Eclipse swept from coast to coast, and for those who were lucky enough to watch it from along the path of totality, it was a true life experience. No natural phenomenon can compete with the beauty of a total solar eclipse, and if theres one thing I heard more than anything else in those golden moments after the Sun returned from behind the Moon, it was, Whens the next one? Everyone wanted to do it again, and for good reason.

Back in 2017, that question was kind of rhetorical; everyone knew the next eclipse to cross the United States was a mere seven years off. For me personally, the passage of time has not dampened my enthusiasm for eclipses one bit, and I suspect the feeling is mutual among the many people who gazed in wonder and childlike glee at the celestial proceedings of 2017. But except for the very lucky who live within the path of totality, mounting an expedition that optimizes the viewing experience takes preparation. Now that were a little less than a year away for the next one, its time to get geared up and make plans for the 2024 eclipse.

Canada - Two missing after floods in Quebec "IndyWatch Feed World"

Two firefighters are missing and around 1,000 people are stranded after floods in the Charlevoix region of Quebec Province, Canada. Intense rainfall caused the Rivire du Gouffre to break its banks, flooding roads and damaging bridges. Around 1,000 residents in areas of the Baie Saint-Paul community have been left isolated as a result. Some have been forced to evacuate their homes. Videos on social media showed motorhomes from a nearby campsite being dragged away by the raging river and crashing into a bridge near the town. The Mayor of Baie Saint-Paul, Michal Pilote, declared a state of emergency and asked residents to stay home. Accommodation centres have been opened to house those displaced. Schools have been closed in the area.

Meta Says About 10% of its Global Ad Revenue at Risk From EU Data Flows Order "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Meta says about 10% of its global ad revenue at risk from EU data flows order:

Meta's earning call yesterday was upbeat on better than expected revenue for the quarter. However buried in its disclosures to investors is a stark warning on looming regulatory risk it's facing in Europe where a decision is expected in a matter of weeks (by May 12) that could see the tech giant ordered to suspend its transatlantic data flows.

"We expect the Irish Data Protection Commission (IDPC) to issue a decision in May in its previously disclosed inquiry relating to transatlantic data transfers of Facebook EU/EEA user data, including a suspension order for such transfers and a fine," Meta's CFO wrote in its Q1 2023 report.

We've covered the (very) long-running saga which hinges on a clash between US surveillance laws and EU privacy rights most recently here and here. So regular TechCrunch readers will already know that a key development Meta is hoping will save its bacon in Europe is the adoption of a new high level data transfer pact which aims to resolve the legal uncertainty around EU data exports.

[...] In its earnings report, Meta tells investors it's hopeful the new EU-US data framework will arrive soon enough to be implemented before the deadline for a suspension of its EU transfers meaning, were these stars to align, it could reboot its claim to have an authorized mechanism for its EU transfers and flick the suspension order away however the company also warns it "cannot exclude the possibility" that adoption won't happen soon enough to prevent such an order.

[...] During a call with investors, the social networking giant was asked about the potential impact on revenues if it is forced to suspend EU-US data flows on regulatory order. Responding, CFO Susan Li began by reiterating its hope that the new high level framework will save its bacon. However, if this sought for escape hatch fails to open in time, she warned investors Meta is facing a hit of around a tenth of its worldwide ad revenue saying "roughly 10%" of this comes from ads delivered to Facebook users in EU countries.

Extraordinary developments in Haiti "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Haiti has been going through a hell of a time in the recent past but especially since its former president Jovenel Mose was assassinated in 2021 and the prime minister Ariel Henry took power. The subsequent governments have been weak and as a result, armed gangs have started taking over in parts of the country, especially its capital Port-au-Prince, terrorizing he population.

People seem to have finally had enough and as a result vigilante groups of citizens have struck back at the gangs.

As Vlina lyse Charlier ventured on to the streets of her conflict-stricken city last week, she encountered scenes that will haunt her for many years to come.

Armed civilians dragging bodies through the streets. Smouldering corpses. Young men with machetes chasing suspected gangsters they planned to kill.

Ive seen enough dead people for many lifetimes, said the Haitian human rights activist. Since Monday, if you get killed, you get burned. Its kill, burn, kill, burn Its nothing I would want anyone else to witness. It stays with you Its hell, you know?

The nightmarish events unfolding in Haitis coastal capital, Port-au-Prince, began before dawn on Monday when members of one of its notorious gangs reportedly tried to seize control of the citys Turgeau area.

What they didnt count on was the population striking back, said Charlier, who works in the neighbourhood.

Over the coming hours, civilians brandishing knives, rocks and handguns rose up against the heavily armed criminals who control more than 80% of Haitis capital and whose activities have led the United Nations to compare the situation there to a war.

As the sun rose, the bloodshed spread. In the Canap-Vert neighbourhood, 13 suspected gangsters were beaten, stoned to death and burned after their minibus was stopped by police. In Turgeau another six men were reportedly set on fire.

This seems like a spontaneous uprising of ordinary people against the gangs, which is not something that you normally see.

Haiti has a long and proud revolutionary history.

In the midst of the French Revolution (178999), slaves, maroons, and free people of color launched the Haitian Revolution (17911804), led by a former slave and the first black general of the French Army, Toussaint Louverture. After 12 years of conflict, Napoleon Bonapartes forces were defeated by Louvertures successor, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (later Emperor Jacques I), who declared Haitis sovereignty on 1 January 1804the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean, the second republic in the Americas, the first country in the Americas to eliminate slavery, and the only state in history esta...

The Israeli military attacked Aleppo International Airport late on Monday, according to Syrian state media, killing one soldier and leaving seven others wounded, including two civilians.

The Israeli aggression also put Aleppo International Airport out of service, said the Syrian state news agency, SANA.

Israel has intensified its attacks on Syrian airports in a bid to disrupt growing flights between Tehran and Damascus, which it views as a corridor to transport weapons.

This is the third time that Aleppo International Airport has been left out of service this year with two attacks on the airport in March.

The End of an Era "IndyWatch Feed War"

Why do the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Bank three of the most highly regarded international economic organizations-project a bleak road ahead for the global economy?

Ominously, the World Bank warns of the possibility of a coming lost decade for economic growth.

In January of this year, the World Bank dropped its global growth projection for 2023 to 1.7% from its June of 2022 projection of 3%. To put some perspective on the number, during the era of high globalization before the 2007-9 crash, global growth averaged 3.5%. Since the crisis, growth has averaged 2.8%. And just three months after the January projection, the World Bank warns of an entire decade of lowered growth expectations. As quoted in the Wall Street Journal: it will take a herculean collective policy effort to restore growth in the next decade to the average of the previous one.

Likewise, the WTO projects the volume of world merchandise trade to expand at only 1.7% this year from the 2.8% average growth experienced since 2008.

On the heels of the April World Bank alarm, the IMF has announced its worst medium-term growth forecast since 1990.

Accordingly, all three major international organizations have offered challenging, if not dire predictions for the global economy.

Clearly, the capitalist ship that has been buffeted by a global pandemic, raging inflation, a European war, and bank failures is taking on water. While there is no reason to expect the ship to sink, serious alarm bells are going off.

The pundits, policy-makers, and economics professors assured us that the orgy of price increases battering household budgets was only temporary, due to disruptions in global supply chains caused first by the pandemic, then by the war in Ukraine. Those promises were made over two years ago.

Since then, explanations have given way to prayer. The policy tools a bitter potion of Central Bank interest rate hikes have proven less effective against inflation than promised. The previous long decade of unusually low interest rates encourages consumers to freely use credit when income is under stress, as it is with rampant inflation. As interest rates soar, those same consumers are slow to recognize their exploding debt load from high interest payments, adding to an already deteriorating standard of living. Reliance on credit thwarts the dampening effects of interest-rate increases upon consumer demand.

Media Pollyannas rejoiced over the March Consumer Price Index numbers, with grow...

Palestinian armed groups fired rockets towards Israel on Tuesday following the death earlier in the day of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian prisoner who was on hunger strike in an Israeli prison.

The Joint Operations Room (JOR), an umbrella body of armed factions in Gaza including Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for the rocket volley that left at least three wounded in Israel, according to medics.

The Israeli military said it identified 21 rockets launched from Gaza towards Israel, with only four of them intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile defence system.

Rockets hit residential areas in Sderot and other towns near the fence separating the Gaza Strip and Israel.

Magen David Adom, Israels ambulance service, said three people were wounded. One person was seriously hurt by shrapnel while the other two, who were identified as foreign nationals, were lightly wounded.

Working the Problem: Deep Space Repair "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Working the Problem: Deep Space Repair

RIME (Radar for Icy Moons Exploration) is the first instrument ever deployed to the outer Solar System that can make direct measurements of conditions below the surface of an object. That makes it precisely tailored for Europa as well as Ganymede and Callisto, two other Galilean moons that also seem to have an internal ocean. Consider it a radar sounder that can penetrate up to 9 kilometers below surface ice. RIME is a major part of why JUICE is going to the moons of Jupiter.

Consider it problematic as well, at least for the moment, while controllers working the JUICE mission try to solve an unexpected deployment issue. The 16-meter long antenna shows movement, but continues to have trouble in becoming released from its mounting bracket. The antenna is currently about a third of its full intended length, according to ESA, partially extended but still stowed away.

Image: Shortly after launch on 14 April, ESAs Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, JUICE, captured this image with its JUICE monitoring camera 2 (JMC2). JMC2 is located on the top of the spacecraft and is placed to monitor the multi-stage deployment of the 16 m-long Radar for Icy Moons Exploration (RIME) antenna. RIME is an ice-penetrating radar that will be used to remotely probe the subsurface structure of the large moons of Jupiter. In this image, RIME is seen in stowed configuration. The image was taken at 14:19 CEST. JMC images provide 1024 x 1024 pixel snapshots. Credit: ESA.

Given that two months of commissioning remain for the spacecraft, the agency is saying that there is abundant time to work the problem out, which may involve something as simple as a stuck pin, potentially sprung by warming the radar mount by rotating the spacecraft and turning the assembly into direct sunlight.

The memory of the Galileo probe to Jupiter hovers over the mission at least momentarily. Controllers never did free up Galileos high-gain antenna, though they were able to return outstanding data through ingenious use of its low-gain counterpart. Needless to say, the hope here is that RIME follows a different path and soon springs free...

Is the US about to conduct a nuclear false flag in Ukraine and blame Russia for it? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | May 2, 2023

The United States is the only country in history to have used all three types of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, biological, chemical), starting with the atomic bombings of Japan in the closing months of the Second World War to mass usage of chemical and biological weapons against numerous other countries it has attacked ever since (particularly Vietnam). And yet, the belligerent thalassocracy just adores chest-thumping about its supposed morality and even warns that its geopolitical adversaries are about to use such weapons (naturally, without ever providing any evidence). This is precisely whats been happening in Ukraine in recent weeks.

On April 28, one of the most prominent neoliberal mouthpieces, the New York Times, ran a story about America setting up numerous radiation sensors across Ukraine in order to detect nuclear blasts. The NYT claims that such sensors can detect bursts of radiation from a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb and can confirm the identity of the attacker. It adds that the goal is to make sure that if Russia detonates a radioactive weapon on Ukrainian soil, its atomic signature and Moscows culpability could be verified, further claiming that experts have worried about whether President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia would use nuclear arms in combat for the first time since the American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Firstly, it should be noted that Russia has a very clear doctrine about the usage of WMDs in an armed conflict, one that has even been updated recently and that states in what sort of situations Moscow would use such weapons. The Ukrainian conflict is still nowhere near a point where Russian WMDs could be used. Secondly, the Russian military dominates the battlefield, inflicting enormous losses on the Kiev regime forces. Even in the case of the much-touted offensive against newly integrated Russian regions in the Donbass and former southern Ukraine, Russia wouldnt use nuclear weapons. However, the NYT claims precisely that is the case, supposedly because Russia is desperate to stop the attack.

Expectedly, experts the NYT allegedly spoke to are anonymous and they claim that the goal is to prevent Russia from conducting a possible dirty bomb false flag in Ukraine. The operation...

Theyre killing libraries "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I have never read a book by Nora Roberts, and what Ive heard about them does not appeal at all. If you enjoy them, great shes an immensely popular author, so a lot of people do enjoy her books. Unfortunately, a censorious few do not, and have decided that no one should read them. Shes being banned. For this?

Whats more, the objection to Robertss books appears extremely flimsy. Four of those books, which make up The Bride Quartet, are about friends seeking love as they build their wedding-planning business.

The books have some sex scenes, but the language is often vague enough that a child would have little idea what was happening. (He touched, he tasted, he lingered until her quivers became trembles.) And spoiler alert each book ends with a marriage proposal.

Roberts allowed that the books contain sex but noted that it is monogamous and consensual. Speaking of the censors, Roberts told us: Im surprised that they wouldnt want teenagers to read about healthy relationships that are monogamous, consensual, healthy and end up in marriage.

Its conventionally heteronormative! But one person, literally one person, squeaked an objection, and chickenshit school administrators in Marin county immediately pulled every Roberts book off the shelves. Thats all it takes, one prude from the fascist group Moms for Liberty complains, and administrators instantly surrender.

Theres a reason for that. Moms for Liberty is a right-wing terrorist organization.

The groups methods, however, belie the wholesome vision it tries to project. VICE News has spoken to students, administrators, parents, superintendents, school board members, and teachers who have faced vicious attacks by Moms for Liberty. Their stories paint a picture of a group that conducts orchestrated harassment campaigns against individuals, thats resulted in many fearing for their safety and, in some cases, their lives.

The greatest impact that Moms for Liberty is having is imparting fear, within the teachers and the educators and in the parents, Laura Leigh-Abby, co-founder of Defense of Democracy, a nonprofit group advocating for inclusive education, told VICE News. The true impact theyre having is really not calculable, because Im seeing teachers who are afraid to speak out because they dont want to be targeted.

Its their tactics. They harass and threaten to get their way, and all too often people let them have it.

New inorganic wide-bandgap perovskite subcells that are both efficient and stable "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

All-perovskite tandem solar cells, stacks of p-n junctions formed from perovskites with different energy bandgaps, have the potential of achieving higher efficiencies than conventional single-junction solar cells. So far, however, most proposed all-perovskite tandem cells have not achieved the desired power associated with creating suitable narrow-and wide-bandgap subcells.

Researchers at Nanjing University and University of Toronto recently developed new inorganic wide-bandgap perovskite subcells that could increase the PCEs and stability of these promising . Their design, introduced in a paper in Nature Energy, involves the insertion of a passivating dipole layer at the interface between organic transport layers and inorganic perovskites within the cells.

Our research group has been focusing on improving the PCEs of all-perovskite tandem solar cells, which have broken the world record several times and have been included in the solar cell efficiency tables, Hairen Tan, one of the researchers who carried out the study, told Tech Xplore.

How to extract quantitative data from your image using the AI pixel classifier "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

See how you can extract quantitative data from your image using the AI pixel classifier.

More about Mica: https://fcld.ly/mica-yt-tut.

Transcript
Mica radically simplifies your workflows, but your workflow is not completed unless you have extracted quantitative information from that image.
Let me show you how easy it is to extract quantitative information with Mica.
First record your multicolor image.
In this case, we want to count the nuclei that we see in that image.
Go to Learn and load the image of interest.
Now you have two classes, the background and the nuclei that we want to quantify.
First of all, draw a background region.
Secondly, draw the object of interest.
Once you are done with that let Mica first create a preview of the annotation that you have created.
If you are happy with that, then do the full training.
Now you have trained an AI model that uses pixel classification in order to segment your nuclei.
Save that model and you can use that model also for all the experiments that you are doing in the future.
Simply go to Results, select the image to quantify, switch to Analysis and you will have access to all the different models that you have trained.
Select the one that you are interested in and Start.
As an output can display the data as histograms, boxplots or even scatterplots.

Mica
Mica, the worlds first wholly integrated imaging Microhub, brings widefield imaging, confocal imaging and with AI-supported analysis seamlessly together. All united in one sample-protecting incubator environment.

All researchers, regardless of expertise, can now work in one easy-to use digital imaging platform, moving confidently from setup to beautifully visualized results, allowing true access for all.

At last, users can capture 4 x more data with 100% correlation in only one exposure, whether using widefield or confocal imaging. They can freely switch from widefield to confocal mode with just a simple click without ever moving the sample and explore unexpected paths with no constraints.

Scientists Propose Radical New Way to Probe The Interior of The Sun "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Gravitational wave astronomy is still in its early stages. So far it has focused on the most energetic and distinct sources of gravitational waves, such as the cataclysmic mergers of black holes and neutron stars. But that will change as our gravitational telescopes improve, and it will allow astronomers to explore the Universe in ways previously impossible.

Although gravitational waves have many similarities to light waves, one distinct difference is that most objects are transparent to gravitational waves. Light can be absorbed, scattered, and blocked by matter, but gravitational waves mostly just pass through matter. They can be lensed by the mass of an object, but not fully blocked.

This means that gravitational waves could be used as a tool to peer inside astronomical bodies, similar to the way X-rays or MRIs allow us to see inside a humans body.

MRI scans and AI to decode what we think? This study has answers "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Is mind reading possible? An age-old question with multiple unproven answers. Those who study psychology often claim that they can understand what the other person is saying as they study mental processes, brain functions, and behaviour, but even they can be 100 per cent accurate.

A study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, attempts to address it as scientists have said that they have come up with a way to decode a stream of words in the brain using MRI scans and artificial intelligence.

The study titled Semantic reconstruction of continuous language from non-invasive brain recordings noted that the system wont replicate each word but it reconstructs the brief of what a person hears or imagines. The study was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Chile Announces Plan to Nationalize Lithium Industry "IndyWatch Feed War"

In a surprising though not unprecedented move, Chile announced plans to nationalize its lithium industry, following similar efforts in resource nationalism among major producers of battery metals. Although implementation of the reforms is expected to be gradual and keep existing contracts intact, the decision stands to influence the political will and feasibility for other lithium producers to follow suit. In seeking to indigenize and retain a greater portion of the value chain in their mining sector, the policies instituted by Chile and other lithium producers have significant implications for the global energy market as demand for electric vehicles and renewable infrastructure soars.

At present, Chile possesses the worlds largest lithium reserves and is the 2nd largest producer, behind Australia. In its return to resource nationalism, Chile seeks to secure its domestic supply and maximize revenue generation from this strategic resource, positioning itself as a leading player in the global battery metals market. Santiagos move toward greater state control of critical minerals precedes a similar phased plan for copper nationalization dating back to the 1950s and ending with the military coup in 1973 that removed the left-wing government of then-President Salvador Allende.

Just before dawn on 2 May, renowned Palestinian activist Khader Adnan died in an Israeli prison, aged 45, after nearly three months of hunger strike in protest against his detention.

Khader Adnan, a father of nine, had led a life of fierce anti-occupation activism in the occupied West Bank, costing him years behind bars and ultimately his life.

Best known for reviving solo hunger strikes against Israeli administrative detention, a policy in which Israel holds Palestinians without trial or charge indefinitely, Adnan spent a total of 316 days on hunger strike across various jails between 2004 and 2023.

The Palestinian Prisoners' Society (PPS), an umbrella advocacy group, said he will be remembered as a true fighter who led long battles with his empty stomach to gain his freedom.

Azerbaijan Losing Patience with Armenias Pashinyan "IndyWatch Feed War"

The installation of a border crossing point on the Lachin Corridor should not have come as a surprise. Azerbaijan has been strikingly patient for nearly three years waiting for Armenia to sign a post-war peace treaty.

The Lachin road has been de facto sealed from military traffic since environmental protestors established a camp there in December 2022. The protestors continued to allow Russias so-called peacekeeping force and the IRC (International Red Cross) to travel through the Lachin.

Meanwhile, Armenia has refused to implement articles 3 and 9 of the November 2020 ceasefire agreement.

Article 3 specifies The peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is being deployed in parallel with the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces. Nevertheless, Yerevan still has a large 10,000 contingent (for only 25,000 Karabakh Armenians) of Armenian security forces masquerading as Karabakh self-defence forces. In the last three years, Armenia has rotated and re-supplied Armenian and Karabakh forces through the Lachin Corridor with the assistance of Russias so-called peacekeeping forces using trucks officially transporting humanitarian assistance.

The Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported that trucks transporting humanitarian assistance were allowed to travel through the Lachin Corridor after paying several thousand dollars in bribes to Russians. Armenian security forces are reportedly travelling in these humanitarian trucks camouflaged as civilians and construction workers. Russia used the same maskirovka when using humanitarian trucks to supply its proxy forces in the so-called Donetsk Peoples Republic (DNR) and Luhansk Peoples Republics (LNR).

In July 2022, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan agreed to withdraw all remaining military units from Karabakh by September of that year, itself a recognition that Armenian security forces continued to be illegally based in Karabakh. Unfortunately, Pashinyan has the ability to contradict himself sometimes even in the same sentence and he has not fulfilled his promise to withdraw Armenian forces from Karabakh.

Worse still, Armenia has transported into and planted thousands of mines in the Karabakh region that were manufactured in 2021; that is, after the ceasefire agreement was signed. Armenia does not deny the mines were manufactured in 2021 but claims the mines were taken from its own territory.

Article 9 guarantees the safety of transport links between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic in order to organize the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles and goods in both directions. Armenia has refused to call this a corridor (despite using this term for Lachin) and has not imple...

An alleged audio recording of the moment where someone can be heard crying out during a quiet beat in the music was making the rounds on social media. Attendees who spoke to The Times said that the clip was similar to what theyd heard.

Future audience expectations in LA are going to be hard to match.

Jetpack Man Sighting over Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), July 28, 2021 "IndyWatch Feed World"

On July 28, 2021, an unidentified individual referred to as Jet Pack Man was sighted near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The sighting occurred at an altitude of approximately 5,000 feet, with the individual reportedly flying alongside commercial planes. Air traffic controllers and pilots both reported the unusual incident, which sparked significant interest and concern within the aviation community.

The jet pack man was also referred to as Iron Man by the Air Traffic Controllers and some of the pilots.

Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), initiated an investigation to determine the identity of the individual and the technology used. Despite extensive searches, the Jet Pack Man remains unidentified, and the incident has fueled speculation and theories regarding advanced personal flight technologies.

The LAX sighting of the Jet Pack Man raised questions about the potential risks posed by such devices to commercial air traffic, as well as the need for regulation and oversight in the emerging field of personal flight technology.

Note on the FOIA request case: The original case was filed on August 3, 2021, for the below information. There was no FOIA case number given, and no response was received until April 4, 2023. The Black Vault asked why the response took so long to get a case number, but nothing was received back. That said, responsive material was mailed within two weeks thereafter. It is unclear why it transpired that way.

Meals on Wheels Is a Climate-Relief Model "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When an unprecedented heat wave bore down on Portland, Oregon, in June 2021, Jonna Papaefthimiou, the citys chief resilience officer, immediately thought of the citys most vulnerable populations: older people sweltering, often alone, in their homes.

She called Suzanne Washington, who runs the local chapter of Meals on Wheels. That overlap of their demographic and the demographic that faces great risk from heat is almost identical, Papaefthimiou said.

Over the next couple of days, Washington and a group of staff identified their most vulnerable clients, recruited volunteers, and started making calls. We were asking, Do you have a fan? Do you know this heat is coming? Are you prepared? Could you get to a cooling center? Do you know where [the nearest one] is? Washington said.

She and her team collected donated fans and air conditioners, which drivers brought with them on their food-delivery routes. They conducted wellness checks by phone and helped clients find rides to cooling centers.

Washington remembers calling a woman in her eighties who said she had just fainted, had a headache, and didnt feel well. We sent out help, she said. That person was in the heat exhaustion phase and heading towards the next phase heatstroke, a life-threatening condition. Their quick actions and persistent outreach most certainly saved lives.

Meals on Wheels, which originated in the United Kingdom during the Second World War, is not a climate organization or even an emergency-response organization in the traditional sense. Rather, these programs are best known for delivering hot meals to lower-income seniors.

But in recent years, as climate disasters increase in frequency and intensity, the broader mission to improve the health and quality of life of the seniors these programs serve has taken on new urgency.

Climate-related disasters, like extreme heat, hurricanes, and wildfires do not affect all populations equally. If youre Black, or poor, youre more likely to live in an ...

Israels far-right Minister for National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir has been filmed giving a speech in front of a wall-hanging glorifying Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein, who massacred 29 Palestinians in 1994.

Images obtained by Haaretz show Ben-Gvir speaking last Tuesday, on the eve of Israeli Independence Day, surrounded by security from the prime minister's office.

Behind him on the wall a drape, quoting scripture, refers to martyrs Kahane and Goldstein and reads: Their blood will rise, adding, "For I will avenge their blood, which I have not yet avenged. For the Lord dwells in Zion."

Speaking at the yeshiva, Ben-Gvir said: "We have a clear and unequivocal ideological struggle here. There is a small group that is trying to lead the entire people of Israel to bad places. But the truth must be told - there are many confused Jews."

He told those present to attend Memorial Day at Be'er Shiva, a commemoration for fallen Israeli soldiers, despite angry bereaved families reportedly saying Ben-Gvir shouldn't attend.

The Climate Commitment Act (CCA) caps and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Washingtons largest emitting sources and industries, allowing businesses to find the most efficient path to lower carbon emissions. This powerful program works alongside other critical climate policies to help Washington achieve its commitment to reducing GHG emissions by 95% by 2050.

The CCA also puts environmental justice and equity at the center of climate policy, making sure communities that bear the greatest burdens from air pollution today see cleaner, healthier air as the state cuts greenhouse gases. But, in an announcement Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the policy rather than dropping it.

Why the power of brands is getting more tribal "IndyWatch Feed World"

In an excerpt from his new book, Wieden+Kennedy head of strategy and University of Michigan marketing professor Marcus Collins explains why to truly get people to move, brands need to focus on their cultural connections.

Fans, tribes, neotribes, community, networks, cultures of consumption, and all the many monikers that go by different names all amount to the same thing: people. If you want to get people to move, then you must focus on people and their proclivity to connect. These connections, of course, are fostered and fortified by the cultural characteristics that govern said people. Adoption into these cultural characteristics catalyzes collective behavior and inspires people to move.

A frontline view of the fight against illegal mining in Yanomami territory "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

YANOMAMI INDIGENOUS TERRITORY, Brazil Four officers from IBAMA, Brazils environmental protection agency, throw themselves from a helicopter into the murky waters of the Uraricoera River below and swim toward an illegal mining raft anchored to the left side of the riverbank. This small yet efficient monster of destruction, operated by up to eight people, uses a suction hose to rip the sediment from the riverbed before dumping it onto a conveyor belt with running water inside the raft. The gold, which is heavier than the sediment it is hidden within, is left on a carpeted mat at the bottom of the conveyor belt. It is then subjected to a burning process using mercury that, as it vaporizes, causes irreversible damage to the surrounding flora, fauna and, ultimately, human beings. It is not just the land of the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, in northern Brazil, that is being destroyed, assailed as it is by the diggers and excavators that carve vast craters into the ground. Dozens of these rafts, which can cost as much as 2 million reais ($395,000) to build, are operating illegally on the banks of rivers like the Uraricoera and the Mucaja, in the Amazon state of Roraima. Weapons in hand, IBAMAs environmental inspectors raid the raft in search of the illegal miners operating it, but to no avail: The raft is empty. Its operators probably fled as soon as they heard the whirr of the helicopters overhead. In the silence of the rainforest, the helicopters, known asThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Still time to save Brazils Cerrado, study shows, but its running out fast "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Brazils Cerrado may not be a household name like the neighboring Amazon Rainforest, but this vast savanna biome is even more threatened and fragmented. A new study now shows theres still a chance to save much of its rich biodiversity but it also warns that the window of opportunity is closing fast. A global biodiversity hotspot and the largest savanna in the world, the Cerrado is still often overlooked by local and international conservation initiatives. One recent example is the European Unions law against deforestation-linked imports, approved this month by the European Parliament, which leaves the Cerrado out of its scope. Our research aimed to show not only which areas have a higher priority for preservation, but also how they have changed in the last few decades, said study lead author Joo Paulo Vieira-Alencar, a Ph.D. candidate in ecology at the University of So Paulo. By delaying the definition of conservation areas, we are losing our ability to preserve the endemic species that live there. We need more urgency. To define priority areas for conservation, the researchers mapped where in the Cerrado endemic terrestrial vertebrates are concentrated, using species records and the categories for extinction risk as determined by the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority. Areas with intense human activity were given lower priority, as these are considered harder to recover or convert into conservation areas. Though Beleaguered, Science Education is Alive in America "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

We were, nonetheless, encouraged by finding so many educators hungry for honest discovery and, in some cases, grateful for scientific information utterly new to them.

The FCC Is Supposed to Protect the Environment. It Doesnt. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In a mountainous forest in southwest Puerto Rico, workers cleared a patch to make room for a 120-foot cellphone tower intended for use by AT&T and T-Mobile. The site, as the tower company later acknowledged, destroyed some of the nesting habitat of the Puerto Rican nightjar, a tiny endangered songbird. Fewer than 2,000 are believed to be alive today.

In the northwestern New Mexico desert, a company called Sacred Wind Communications, promising to bring broadband to remote Navajo communities, planted a cell tower near the legally protected Pictured Cliffs archaeological site, which contains thousands of centuries-old tribal rock carvings.

And in Silicon Valley, a space startup pursued plans to equip thousands of satellites to use mercury fuel in orbit, even as an Air Force official at one of the possible launch sites voiced extreme concern that the toxic element could rain back down to earth.

You may be surprised to learn that these potential harms fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission. Few people think of the FCC as an environmental cop. Its known for regulating television and radio and overseeing the deployment of communications technology. But the agency also has a broad mandate to ensure that technology doesnt damage the environment. The task includes everything from protecting wildlife and human health to preserving historic sites and even preventing aesthetic blight.

This role is particularly critical now, as the FCC presides over a nationwide buildout for 5G service, which will require 800,000 new small cell transmitters, those perched on street poles and rooftops, often near schools, apartments and homes. But even with this massive effort underway, as ProPublica previously reported, the FCC has refused to revise its radiation-exposure limits, which date back to the era of flip phones. In addition, the agency has cut back on the environmental reviews that it requires while also restricting local governments contro...

On Saturday, a solo backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche near Breckenridge, CO. The 31-year-old man was skiing a northeast-facing couloir on Bald Mountain, or Baldy, southeast of Breck. His girlfriend reported him missing when he didn't return her phone calls. PRELIMINARY REPORT: A solo skier was caught, buried, and killed in a small but long-running avalanche. The avalanche started at about 13,200 feet on an east-facing slope. It ran approximately 1,300 feet. The avalanche began in dry, wind-drifted snow and entrained wet snow in the track of the avalanche path. Joe Biden claims to be the most pro-union president in history - but workers disagree "IndyWatch Feed World"

A US Railway Union (RWU) rep explains why Biden isn't their man in the White House. US President Joe Biden announced his re-election bid last Tuesday, hoping to cement a second term after the results of the 2024 presidential election next November. This carefully orchestrated announcement came just days after a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs found that only 26% of Americans and 47% of Democrats would like to see him run again. Biden, who claims to be the "most pro-union president in American history," is losing favor with working Americans. That's because, as he said to rich donors in the early stages of his 2020 campaign: "No one's standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change." Indeed, his record as president shows that not much has really changed, whether that be in tackling the issue of climate change, improving workers' rights, or ending America's forever wars.

Scrapping Charles Darwin: Hindutvas Anti-Scientific Maladies "IndyWatch Feed World"

Welcome the canons of pseudoscience. Open your arms to the dribbling, sponsored charlatans. According to a growing number of Indias top officialdom, teaching Charles Darwins theory of evolution to children in their ninth and 10th grades is simply not on.

Last month, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), a purportedly autonomous government organisation responsible for curricula content and textbook publishing for Indias 256 million primary and secondary students, continued its hostility against Darwin as part of its content rationalisation process. NCERT had taken the scrub to evolution during the COVID-19 pandemic, implausibly arguing that it was necessary to drop its teaching in moving classes online. (Darwin would have been most bemused.)

A closer look at the list of dropped and excluded subjects in the NCERT publication of rationalised content in textbooks from May last year is impressive in its philistinism. In addition to dropping teaching on Darwin, the origin of life on earth, evolution, fossils and molecular phylogeny, we also see the scrapping of such subjects as electricity, the magnetic effects of electric current and the sustainable management of natural resources.

Evolutionary biologist Amitabh Joshi of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research was less than impressed, calling the measure a travesty of the notion of a well-rounded secondary education.

On April 20, the non-profit Breakthrough Science Society launched an open letter demanding a reversal of the decision. Knowledge and understanding of evolutionary biology is important not just to any subfield of biology, but is also key to understanding the world around us. Though not evident at first glance, the principles of natural selection help us understand how any pandemic progresses or why certain species go extinct, among many other critical issues.

A sense of despondency reigns on whether NCERT will change course, even in the face of protest. In the view of biologist Satyajit Rath, Given the recent trajectories of such decisions of the government of India, probably not, at least over the short term. Sustained progressive efforts will be required to influence the long-term outcomes.

Approximately 26% of U.S. Government Spending Goes to Weapon-Makers "IndyWatch Feed World"

The vast majority of the U.S. Governments purchases are for the military, and most of that is paying for weapons and for enabling Americas troops to use them.

For example, in the 3 April 2018 OMB and Congressional Budget Office estimates of discretionary new budget authority that The President signed into law on March 23, 2018, was the OMB TOTAL, DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS 654,621 billion dollars. Not included in that sum was MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND VETERANS AFFAIRS APPROPRIATIONS OMB Non-Defense Category Subtotal (including CHIMPs) 81,876, all of which is actually military (it wouldnt even exist but for that). Also not included was anything of the OMB TOTAL, STATE AND FOREIGN OPERATIONS APPROPRIATIONS 53,631, much of which is actually for military purposes. Those are only SOME of the military costs that the U.S. Government categorizes as-if they werent. But, adding just the $81,876 to the $654,621 produces $736,497 billion in military spending that year. The actual total was certainly above a trillion dollars.

The Enacted Appropriations as of March 30, 2018 in the DEFENSE CATEGORY were $629,004 billion; and that was $79,947 billion above the spending limit and so required that cuts needed to be made in the NON?DEFENSE CATEGORY so that the Appropriations in that category (some of which were actually military) were $579,554 billion. Adding $629,004 billion to $579,554 billion produces as the total federal discretionary spending that year, $1.208558 trillion, of which the DEFENSE CATEGORY consumed 52%.

SO: at least 52% of federal spending that Congress authorized and the President spent with taxpayer funds during that year was for the U.S. military.

What percent did the payments to firms such as Lockheed Martin and the others of the 100 top sellers to the U.S. Government (virtually all of which were to the Pentagon) consume of that 52%. It was...

Positively the last poll before the elections? maybe "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Following hot on the heals of yesterdays Belfast Telegraph poll from Lucid Talk, the Irish News has one today from Liverpool University.

And there are some striking differences which you can see in the individual party charts.

Sinn Fen 29.8%

DUP 23%

Alliance 14.5%

UUP 12.8%

SDLP 8.3%

TUV 5%

As with all polling the normal caveats apply:

 • Margin of error. Liverpool University normally have a smaller sample than Lucid Talk, and therefore a larger margin of error of 3%
 • The time lag between polling and voting during which some people can change their mind
 • The possibility that Dont Knows ultimately decide more in one direction than another
 • Some people vote differently in Council elections than in Assembly elections.

In addition, there is an important reservation about the Liverpool University poll. The market research company that Liverpool uses appears to have a systemic sampling problem which their weighting methods do not adequately correct for. The result is that their polls tend to under-represent the TUV and/or the DUP wing of unionism, and to overcall support for the smaller Green, PBPA and Conservative parties. This is no guarantee that they have done so on this occasion. But it is a reason to interpret their figures for those parties with caution.

To view trends it is best to compare the results from the same polling company across time not between companies.

Cold War: Okowa, Ibori Are Not Yet Back On Talking Terms Since Victory Of Oborevwori "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

IBORI AND OKOWA 2

LAGOS MAY 2ND (URHOBOTODAY)-In Delta state, the ex-governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, has not candidly identified with the governor and his once-political trainee, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, since the victory of the governor-elect, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.
Former governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who is a leading player in the 2023 election in Delta state, has tried to reconcile most of the aggrieved PDP members in the state, but Saturday Vanguard could not find out the extent he has gone between Okowa and Ibori.
Uduaghan also had an issue with Okowa in 2015 because he did not initially support the emergence of the latter as governor, but they had since built bridges of understanding.
Neither Okowa nor the governor-elect, Oborevwori, have spoken on their present relationship with Ibori but from all indications, they still hold him in high regard.
A source hinted: Ibori, who opposed the candidature of the governor-elect, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has not spoken since he suffered a humiliating defeat in his home local government, Ethiope West on March 18.
However, preparations for the handover to the incoming governor, on May 29, are on top gear in the state. The government has set up a 38-man inauguration committee with the responsibility to plan and execute the handover ceremony.
From the feelers, Oborevwori is not averse to those that decamped from the party during the elections returning to the fold, as he is open to working with all stakeholders in the Delta project, irrespective of party affiliation.
As expected, there are new political alignments as politicians try to assert themselves in the incoming administration.

American Agency Wants To Require Offshore Oil Companies To Go Shipwreck Hunting Before Drilling "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ocean Explorer

Throughout the years of oil and gas development companies drilling in the oceans, they have found at least 600 shipwrecks off the Gulf of Mexico alone. But groups of historians and scientists believe that this number is minimal compared to how many shipwrecks are probably out in the waters.

Because of this, there is a new proposal to the Federal Register by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) that would require offshore energy companies to conduct maritime archaeological surveys before they begin any of their underwater drilling operations that could possibly harm or upset the seafloor off the continental shelf.

During a 2011 operation, an unnamed energy company saw a shipwreck close to where they were doing their drilling operations. The wreck was seen once again sometime in 2017, however it was never fully explored. Sudans Army and Rival Extend Truce, Despite Ongoing Clashes

CAIRO (AP) Sudans army and its rival paramilitary said Sunday they will extend a humanitarian cease-fire a further 72 hours. The decision follows international pressure to allow the safe passage of civilians and aid, but the shaky truce has not so far stopped the clashes.

In statements, both sides accused the other of violations. The agreement has deescalated the fighting in some areas but violence continues to push civilians to flee. Aid groups have also struggled to get badly needed supplies into the country.

The conflict erupted on April 15 between the nations army and its paramilitary force, and threatens to thrust Sudan into a raging civil war. The U.N. warned on Sunday that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was at a breaking point.

The scale and speed of what is unfolding in Sudan is unprecedented, the UNs humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said in as statement.

He said water and food are becoming increasingly hard to find in the countrys cities, especially the capital, Khartoum, and that the lack of basic medical care means many could die of preventable causes. Griffiths said that massive looting of aid supplies has hindered efforts to help civilians.

Earlier Sunday, an aircraft carrying eight tons of emergency medical aid landed in Sudan to resupply hospitals devastated by the fighting, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which organized the shipment. It arrived as the civilian death toll from the countrywide violence topped 400 and aid groups warned that the humanitarian situation was becoming increasingly dire.

WASHINGTON (AP) Bound to Sudan by ailing parents and his devotion to treating the poor there, American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman kept working as long as he could after fighting engulfed Sudans capital.

For days after battles between two rival Sudanese commanders erupted in Khartoum on April 15, the 49-year-old Sulieman treated the citys wounded. He and other doctors ventured out as explosions shook the walls of homes where Khartoums people cowered inside. Gunfire between the two factions battling for control resounded in the streets.

Say, Nothing will happen to us except what God has decreed for us, Sulieman, a U.S.-born gastroenterologist who divided his time and work between Iowa City, Iowa, and Khartoum, said in one of his last messages to worried friends on Facebook last week, as fighting persisted. And in God let the believers put their trust.

The morning that Sulieman decided he had to risk the dangerous escape from Sudans capital with his parents, American wife and his two American children was the morning that the war found Sulieman, friends say.

In the wholesale looting that has accompanied fighting in the capital, Khartoum, a city of 5 million, a roving band of strangers surrounded him in his yard Tuesday, stabbing him to death in front of his family. Friends suspect robbery was the motive. He became one of two Americans confirmed killed in Sudan in the fighting, both dual nationals.

Authorities say the other, with ties to Denver, was caught in a crossfire. They have not released that Americans name.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) Scores of Somalis fleeing violence in Sudan arrived in their Horn of Africa nation on Sunday, an official said.

Some 148 Somali nationals, mostly students, arrived by plane in the capital Mogadishu, said Abdurahman Nur Mohamed Diinaari, a top official with the Somali foreign ministry.

Through the assistance of the International Organization for Migration, Somalias foreign ministry has finally been able to relocate 148 Somalis from Sudan to Somalia today, he said.

The Somalis had traveled by land from Sudan to Ethiopia and then onward by air to Somalia. Forty-five of those who arrived Sunday were later transported to Garowe, the administrative capital of the Somali state of Puntland, Diinaari said.

Somalia itself has been plagued by violence for years. The Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, which opposes the federal government, frequently launches deadly attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of the country.

One of the Somalis evacuated on Sunday said in an interview that she was happy to be alive and back in her country.

I am pleased that I have finally arrived in my country. However, what we have been through is unusual and hard to describe, but I am grateful for the opportunity to survive, Ramlo Mohamed, one of the evacuees, told AP. There were an estimated 7,000 Somali nationals in Sudan before violence broke out earlier this month, most of them attending universities there. Others are business people and migrants hoping to...

Pretoria Peace Deal: A Model for Africas Conflict Resolution Efforts

April 26, 2023

BY ADDISALEM MULAT

The African Unions efforts in mediating the Pretoria peace agreement in Ethiopia have played a significant role in restoring peace and stability in the country. By bringing the parties together to reach a peaceful settlement, the African Union has demonstrated its commitment to conflict resolution, and the landmark peace deal serves as a shining example to other African countries working on conflict resolution.

The role played by the continental bloc in brokering the Ethiopian peace agreement is an excellent example of the organizations commitment to its mandate. It has demonstrated that peaceful dialogue, compromise, and conflict resolution can pave the way for lasting solutions that promote stability and economic growth in the continent.

The Union deserves much credit for its mediation in brokering the peace agreement. It has highlighted the essential elements of regional cooperation and collective action to prevent and resolve conflicts, which is critical in finding sustainable solutions in the future. The Ethiopian government has shown a real commitment to dialogue, reconciliation and compromise, which sets a great example for the rest of Africa. It reveals that conflict resolution is possible through peaceful negotiations in a non-violent process. This approach presents a different and positive alternative to military solutions. Such commitment can go a long way in containing conflicts across the continent and in facilitating sustainable peace and stability.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) The United Nations food relief agency has suspended aid deliveries to Ethiopias northern Tigray region amid an internal investigation into the theft of food meant for hungry people, according to four humanitarian workers.

The World Food Program is responsible for delivering food from the U.N. and other partners to Tigray, the center of a devastating two-year civil war that ended with a ceasefire in November.

More than 5 million of the regions 6 million people rely on aid.

WFP informed its humanitarian partners on April 20 that it was temporarily suspending deliveries of food to Tigray amid reports of food misappropriation, one of the four humanitarian workers told AP. Three other aid workers confirmed this information. They all insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to a journalist on this matter.

Last month, AP reported that the WFP was investigating cases of 20 million people need humanitarian help due to drought and conflict.

A letter sent by the WFPs Ethiopia director on April 5 asked humanitarian partners to share any information or aware of or that are brought to your attention by your staff, beneficiaries or local authorities.

At the time, two aid workers told AP that the stolen supplies included enough food to feed 100,000 people. The food was discovered missing from a warehouse i...

Writers Strike: What Happens If Other Union Workers Refuse to Cross Picket Lines

As talks with studios go down to the wire, entertainment guilds are advising their members about their rights and obligations when it comes to allying themselves with scribes at protests.

BY KATIE KILKENNY

MAY 1, 2023 4:20PM

As the Writers Guild of America hurtles toward a potential strike, their peer entertainment unions have been quick to offer statements of inter-union solidarity. The SAG-AFTRA national board proclaimed it stood strongly in support of industry scribes, while the Teamsters issued a fiery declaration that the WGAs battle is a shared fight. The Directors Guild of America and IATSE called on the studios and streamers to reach a deal with the writers, and one of the latters Locals even sent treats to the WGA negotiating committee from beloved SoCal bakery-slash-institution Portos.

But, when faced with an actual picket line from writers in front of a workplace, what choices do members of other entertainment unions have? In the labor movement, observing (in other words, not crossing) a picket line means honoring the sense of dignity and collectivity and power of the workers [on strike], explains history professor Nelson Lichtenstein, who directs the University of Southern California Santa Barbaras Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy. Therefore, crossing a picket line is a sin in the House of Labor.

All the major entertainment unions contracts contain no-strike clauses that while each have different language prevent labor groups from participating in a work stoppage over the course of their respective agreements. Still, workers individually have a right to engage in sympathy strikes, which include when they honor a picket line formed by a union that is not their own. Of course, doing so can open workers up to consequences: While legal sources surveyed by The Hollywood Reporter disagree on whether a breach of contract claim can or might be brought against an entertainment worker as a result of en...

Lordstown Says Its at Risk of Bankruptcy if Foxconn Walks Away from Its EV Deal

Foxconn was going to invest $170 million in the struggling EV startup but now says that Lordstown is in breach because its stock is trading for less than $1 a share.

Lordstown Motors headquarters

Embattled electric vehicle startup Lordstown Motors says it could run out of money if its deal with iPhone manufacturer Foxconn fails to go through. The deal is in jeopardy after Foxconn notified Lordstown that its in breach of its investment deal because its stock has fallen under $1 a share.

Lordstown traces its origins to GMs announcement in 2018 that it would be closing down its Lordstown, Ohio, factory. Then-President Donald Trump assailed GM over the decision, leading to the automakers decision to sell the plant to a struggling electric truck startup called Workhorse.

Instead, Workhorses founder and former CEO, Steve Burns, started a new company called Lordstown Motors with the plan to build electric pickup trucks, centered on a prototype called Endurance. GM invested $75 million in the company, $25 million of which was cash and another $50 million in the form of plant assets, plant permits, and operating costs at the factory.

Lordstowns stock has fallen under $1 a share

Since buying it, Lordstown Motors has put about $240 million worth of work into getting the factory ready to build the Endurance. It went public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, last summer and has since run into problem after problem.

The CEO was forced out after he was caught lying about truck preorders. Initial production goals were slashed. GM sold its stake in the company. And federal investigators launched probes as Lordstown revealed it only has enough money to survive through mid-2022.

Flash forward to mid-2022, and Lordstown was able to sell the former GM factory to Foxconn for $230 million. The company later said it would loan out space from Foxconn while it searched for contract manufacturers to help with the prod...

WASHINGTON The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on Monday recommended that Congress consider expanding its regulatory powers to backstop certain deposits so that it could prevent bank runs.

The proposal came the same day the F.D.I.C. orchestrated the seizure and sale of First Republic Bank to J.P. Morgan, and weeks after a run on Silicon Valley Bank helped sow its collapse.

Right now, the F.D.I.C. insures bank deposits only up to $250,000. That has left banks that have a large share of uninsured deposits particularly small- and midsize banks vulnerable to runs. The F.D.I.C. estimates that as of the end of last year banks held $7.7 trillion of uninsured deposits, about 43 percent of total deposits in the United States.

The report highlights that while the overwhelming majority of deposit accounts remain below the deposit insurance limit, growth in uninsured deposits has increased the exposure of the banking system to bank runs, Martin Gruenberg, the chairman of the F.D.I.C., said in a statement accompanying the report. Large concentrations of uninsured deposits increase the potential for bank runs and can threaten financial stability.

Fears over the stability of the banking system have led to an exodus of deposits from smaller regional banks to larger banks in recent weeks, as nervous customers moved their money to banks that are seen as too big to fail.

Some members of Congress have been looking for ways to boost the deposit cap, at least temporarily, in an effort to stop depositors from pulling their money out of smaller institutions that have been at the center of recent bank turmoil....

US May Default on June 1 Without Debt Ceiling Hike; Biden, McCarthy to Meet

WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday summoned the four top congressional leaders to the White House next week after the Treasury warned the government could run short of cash to pay its bills by June.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a letter to Congress that the agency will be unlikely to meet all U.S. government payment obligations "potentially as early as June 1" without action by Congress.

The estimate raised the risk that the United States is headed for an unprecedented default that would shake the global economy, adding new urgency to political calculations in Washington, where Democrats and Republicans were girding for a months-long standoff.

Biden called Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Jerusalem, where he is on a diplomatic trip, to invite him to a May 9 White House meeting. The two leaders haven't sat down to discuss the issue since February.

Biden also extended invitations to House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell, whose fall in March sidelined him for weeks, said he and Biden had a "good conversation" today, adding: "I'm sure we'll be speaking again."

House Republicans passed a bill to raise the debt limit last week that includes steep cuts to spending from healthcare for the poor to air-traffic controllers, which the Democratic-controlled Senate and Biden say they will not approve.

Biden has steadfastly said he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling increase, but will discuss budget cuts after a new limit is passed. Congress has often paired debt-ceiling increases with other budget and spending measures.

Pitfalls of the soft life "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

For black women in particular, the individual pursuit of a soft, consumption-driven life is a fragile approach to securing social justice.

alt

The charm of the strong black woman is fizzling out as we enter the era of the soft black girl. This is a phrase used to describe a black girl or woman who intentionally pursues an easy and peaceful life. Strong black womanhood, laden with aches and responsibilities, now represents a hard life. Whereas to be a black girl imbued with softness is to view the world as a playground. It is to enjoy an existence marked by fewer burdens or none.

The term soft life first emerged among social media users in Nigeria who expressed their desire for a gentle life, unburdened by the effects of poor governance in their country. While Africans, especially Nigerians and South Africans, still actively employ the term, it is largely black women residing in the USA and UK who have co-opted both the term and its current practice.

It has become impossible to disentangle the notion of soft life from black women. Some black women claim men cannot enjoy or benefit from a soft life. This is because such a lifestyle rests fundamentally on the use of feminine energy and the repudiation of masculine energy. Such binary thinking presents soft life as a hyper feminine phenomenon. It foists it upon black women in a manner never intended by the original architects of the soft life imagination. Because of this, a growing number of black women see a soft life as a necessity and a crucial element of black feminist practice.

Many soft life enthusiasts stress the importance of softness, of practicing self-care. To justify the soft life trend, they quote Audre Lordes famous saying: Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare. I recognize the value of encouraging black women to care for themselves and cultivate a lifestyle that enables inner peace. But I question if a soft lifestyle, in its common expression, bears the same liberatory politics as Lordes feminist call to nurture the self. Lorde does not remove her awareness of the need for social transformati...

Guilty Verdict in Saint Paul Murder Trial of White Vigilante Not Enough, Says Victims Family "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Saint Paul, MN On March 30, 2023, Brian Kjellberg was found guilty by a jury of second-degree murder without intent for killing Arnell AJ Stewart over a parking space near Kjellbergs residence. But even before evidence shown in the trial indicated a racial motive, Stewarts family and supporters have been calling this a premeditated, racially motivated killing and continue to demand authorities charge Kjellberg with hate crimes.

On December 2, 2021, Brian Kjellberg, who has been described as a white vigilante, killed AJ Stewart, who is Black, with a homemade shank for unwittingly parking in his private parking space in an alley outside Kjellbergs home. Stewart, who was unarmed, was next door to Kjellbergs home visiting friends. Kjellberg said he acted in self-defense after Stewart punched him in the face.

Nearly sixteen months later, the murder trial of Kjellberg, whos been freed on bond since shortly after the killing, took only four days to conclude and only 90 minutes of deliberation for the jury to find Kjellberg guilty of second-degree murder for stabbing Stewart to death.

Kjellbergs defense attorney, Earl Gray, has filed motions for acquittal (pdf) and for a new trial (pdf) with a motion hearing set for May 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Ramsey County Courthouse. If the motions are unsuccessful, Kjellberg faces up to 40 years in prison at his May 17 sentencing hearing.

In a recent phone call, Stewarts cousin Tongo Eisen-Martin, who is also San Franciscos Poet Laureate, told Unicorn Riot that he believed Kjellbergs crime was in ways similar to the recent shocking and unprovoked shooting in Kansas City, Missouri by an 84-year-old white man. Lula Recognizes Six New Brazilian Indigenous Reserves "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The Amazon rainforest plays a critical role in the mitigation of climate change, but in recent years it has been the target of a steep increase in deforestation.

A demarcation decree by President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva of Brazil has established six new Indigenous reserves in the South American country where no mining will be permitted and restrictions will be placed on logging and commercial agriculture.

The lands include an extensive area of about 1.5 million acres of Amazon rainforest.

The decree was signed on the last day of the 19th Terra Livre gathering, attended by thousands of Indigenous peoples in the countrys capital city of Braslia.

We are going to legalize Indigenous lands. It is a process that takes a little while, because it has to go through many hands, the 77-year-old Lula, who was also president from 2003 to 2010, told a crowd of people at the gathering, as BBC News reported. I dont want any indigenous territory to be left without demarcation during my government. That is the commitment I made to you.

Lula has promised to reverse policies including the promotion of mining on Indigenous lands of his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

Average yearly deforestation in Brazil increased by 75 percent compared with the previous decade during Bolsonaros four-year presidency, the policies of which prioritized commercial farming and logging, reported Le Monde.

If we want to achieve zero deforestation by 2030, we need registered Indigenous reserves, Lula said, as Le Monde reported.

Two of the newly established reserves are in the Amazon, the largest of which Unieuxi was officially designated to belong to the Maku and Tukano pe...

Debris From SpaceX Explosion Coated Texas Town and Smashed Into Wildlife Refuge "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

On April 20, Elon Musks SpaceX Starship exploded over the Gulf of Mexico three minutes into its inaugural launch. While the fiery spectacle caught the attention of the public, it was the eruptive ground-level portion of the launch that has been attracting more intense scrutiny from the government and environmentalists.

Last Thursdays blastoff from SpaceXs Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, blew a cloud of shattered concrete over neighboring Port Isabel, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesperson Aubry Buzek, as Reuters reported. A report from the agency said that and the big chunks of metal and concrete that were thrown thousands of feet onto the grounds of a national wildlife refuge, causing a three-and-a-half acre fire, have led to new concerns about the environmental impact of the companys operations.

They contemplated debris from these launches, but not part of the launch pad itself being blown out miles away and scattered across the landscape, said Jared Margolis, a senior attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, as reported by Reuters. What happened is not what they anticipated.

The agencys report said no people were injured, and there was no evidence of wildlife having been hurt by the launch.

I walk through the dunes, towards the windy mudflat just south of the launch pad. Theres debris spread nearly a mile around some the size of golf balls, others as big as engine blocks, Gaige Davila of Texas Public Radio said on NPRs All Things Considered. The entire bed of this mudflat is covered with pieces of concrete and rebar. Some have impacted the ground so hard that theyve left holes that are about 2 1/2 to 3 feet deep and 6 feet across.
