Ach. Ach was. Das ist ja unglaublich, Bob! Und das erkennst du jetzt erst? Was machst du noch gleich beruflich?
Der Branchenvertreter, der frher bei der Microsoft-freundlicheren Business Software Alliance (BSA) war

Sophos patches three issues in the Sophos Web Security appliance, one of them rated as critical "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Sophos addressed three vulnerabilities in Sophos Web Appliance, including a critical flaw that can lead to code execution.

Cybersecurity vendor Sophos addressed three vulnerabilities in Sophos Web Appliance, including a critical flaw, tracked as CVE-2023-1671 (CVSS score of 9.8), that can lead to code execution.

The CVE-2023-1671 flaw is a pre-auth command injection issue that resides in the warn-proceed handler, it affects appliances older than

The company also addressed a high-severity code execution issue, tracked as CVE-2022-4934. The issue is a post-auth command injection vulnerability that resides in the exception wizard, it can allow administrators to execute arbitrary code.

The vendor also fixed a medium-severity reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability tracked as CVE-2020-36692. An attacker can exploit the vulnerability to execute JavaScript code in the victims browser.

The attacker can trigger the flaw by tricking the victim into submitting a malicious form on an attacker-controlled website while logged into Sophos Web Appliance.

All the above vulnerabilities were discovered and responsibly disclosed to Sophos by external security researchers via the Sophos bug bounty program.

Sophos Web Appliance will reach end-of-life (EoL) status on July 20, 2023. The company recommends customers replace the appliances with Sophos Firewall.

Roads, human activity take a toll on red pandas: Q&A with researcher Damber Bista "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

KATHMANDU The spring season in the Northern Hemisphere is a critical time for red pandas, particularly in Nepal. This is the period when these furry, tree-dwelling animals spend a lot of time on the ground to look for food. Its also the time when breeding adults of the species, Ailurus fulgens, start to reproduce, and when cubs born the previous year explore their habitat in search of a new home. These are some of the findings conservationist Damber Bista made while working on his Ph.D. at the University of Queensland, Australia. As part of the study, Bista and his team fitted 10 red pandas in eastern Nepal with GPS collars, so that they could track them to look at the effects of human disturbances on the species. Mongabays Abhaya Raj Joshi spoke to Bista recently over video call to learn about his work. The following interview has been translated from Nepali and lightly edited for length and clarity. Mongabay: Could you please describe the main objectives of your study? Damber Bista: My main overall objective was to look at the effects of human disturbance and habitat fragmentation on red pandas. I tried to look at these issues from different indicators such as their space use pattern, daily movement and behavior while close to a road. Also, as we didnt have previous studies on how cubs disperse after leaving their mother, I also looked into it. The other objective was related to their recursive behavior under which they spend aThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Sunday:

When I saw the praise for Sirius I did cringe to myself because I also find them to be a scummy company. I thought I'd avoid responding, because frankly life is too short. However, this veiled threat of libel is simply ridiculous, so now I am going to respond. The reason I find them scummy is because I worked on a project with them 10 years ago, and they simply didn't pay me and ignored reminders to pay the invoice. The project was ultimately cancelled as the client changed their mind, so I guess Sirus thought they didn't need to pay me. It wasn't even a huge sum of money, but it was enough to totally burn their reputation with me. So yeah, if they want to sue me for libel, bring it the fuck on. Thanks

Summary: The crimes of Sirius Open Source turn out to have gone further than the pension fraud; according to a new message, the company withheld payment to staff that did a lot of work and weve seen even worse wage theft before (at one point the company was taken to court over it, almost exactly a decade ago if not many times more)

Playing 78 RPM Shellac Records: Its Not Just About Speed "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

What is the difference between 78, 45, and 33 RPM records? Obviously most people would say the speed, which of course is true to a degree. But as [Techmoan] covers in a recent video, theres a whole lot more to the playback of 78 RPM records. Especially the older type without so-called microgrooves. Even if you have a record player that can do 78 RPM speeds, you may have noticed that the sound is poor, with a lot of clicking and popping.

The primary reason for this is that on an average 78 RPM record, the groove containing the sound pattern is 3 mil (thousandth of an inch) wide, whereas the grooves on microgroove and 33/45 RPM records is a mere 1 mil wide. This difference translates into the stylus tip, which is comically undersized for the 3 mil grooves and ends up dragging somewhere in the very bottom of the groove, missing entirely out on the patterns etched higher up on the sides. This is why in the past styluses would often come in the flip-style version, as pictured above.

Its also possible to purchase the mono, 3 mil styluses today from Audio-Technica and...

"They are Driven by The Force of Borrowed Will, and Twisted by Monsters in Search of Ever-Greater Monstrosities." "IndyWatch Feed World"

 Dog Poet Transmitting.......

I requested some Easter music this (Sunday) morning, it being Easter, and... no matter how I phrased my request, I was told that no such thing existed on Amazon. I couldn't get anything even from The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There was nada except for elevator music and... some jazz. So... I said, well... how about something Satanic or Infernal. They had PLENTY of that.

I did get some Easter music though; metaphorically speaking. It's a kind of reversed Road to Damascus, BUT... not unwelcome, and... I expect to see a lot more of it shortly. Here is the first example; sent in by a close friend, and... another perspective on the same thing from the same source. This fellow in the video; no longer with us... was once a Communist functionary. He's now doing the old soft-shoe to some hot-foot blues.

Meanwhile, I had to search a bit for provenance on this. It wasn't present in my first exposure to it. I don't like to promote this sort of thing, BUT... I have to seriously wonder why the scene was cut out of the official release, AND... why does he ask the young boy to suck his tongue... in English?

Because I am not a fan of this man, I hesitate to comment further. What I will do is provide one... last... link... with a little more detail, so... at least we know the event happened and is not a deep fake. I don't know how you explain this away, ESPECIALLY in light of all the public awareness of dark shit on the sexual frontiers concerning children.

Here's the deal, my friends... independent of all the events of recent times that indicate low behavior among the highly born; materially speaking... this is what happens in an apocalypse. Somehow... by inexplicable means, through the operations of a mysterious force, the covers are being torn away from those who have... for so long... used them as a means of concealment.

From one quarter, all these exposures are being used to kill the collective faith in that upon which all sincere religions have been built; for as many years as there are grains o...

15 community-based conservation opportunities to help people and the planet "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Community-based conservation, which seeks to simultaneously benefit people and nature, is a promising approach for tackling biodiversity loss, climate change and socioeconomic inequalities. A recent publication identifies 15 key emerging threats and opportunities in community-based conservation. These resulted from a horizon scan for community-based conservation undertaken over the past two years by a group of 39 conservation practitioners from around the globe, including staff at Mongabay. The group, coordinated by Wilder Institute, analyzed input from a global online survey that received responses from 555 individuals plus 36 groups with a diversity of knowledge backgrounds spread across 109 nations. There are several concrete steps and recommendations that can be drawn from the 15 topics identified. Here are just a few. The 15 topics identified in a recent Trends in Ecology & Evolution review as most pertinent to community-based conservations effectiveness over the coming 15 years and their thematic grouping. There is an assumed connection between topics within the same theme. Dashed arrows represent a direct connection between topics across themes; additional, subtler connections may exist. Image by the Wilder Institute. One topic highlights recently amplified calls for economic reform, or at least green economic recovery. Yet, green growth will not address the climate and biodiversity crises unless social, ecological and intergenerational outcomes are prominent in evaluating wealth. There are growing efforts to identify more comprehensive indicators of well-being. Community-based conservation, already pursuing holistic conceptions of what constitutes wealth, can both guide and benefit from wider adoption of transformative, sufficiency-focused frameworks suchThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Meteorologist says US government has an accurate measure of US temperature that shows no recent warming but it's hiding it "IndyWatch Feed World"

Government-controlled surface datasets, the bedrock of climate thermogeddon fears promoting Net Zero, cannot possibly be accurate, and are only "an estimate with high uncertainty". The claim comes from the noted U.S. meteorologist Anthony Watts, who has spent the last decade highlighting the numerous flaws built into global temperature monitoring systems. Data are collected by government bodies from a weather station network, "that was never intended to detect a 'global warming signal'", notes Watts. He goes on to call for a new independent global climate database. Given that governments are spending billions of taxpayer dollars on climate mitigation programmes, "doesn't it make sense to get the most important thing - the actual temperature - as accurate as possible", he asks. To date, continues Watts, there is only one network of climate capable weather stations that is accurate enough to fully detect a climate change signal. This is the U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN),...

For his part, Elon Musk sarcastically highlighted the vain attempt, saying on Twitter: "Yeah, you can totally delete things from the Internet - that works perfectly and doesn't draw attention to whatever you were trying to hide at all." The American billionaire derided on Twitter the Pentagon's attempt to remove social media posts containing leaked classified documents relating to the conflict in Ukraine. The day before his tweet, the New York Times newspaper indicated that officials were not successful in removing the publications from the internet. The leak was described to the New York Times by a senior intelligence official as "a nightmare for the Five Eyes," the intelligence sharing apparatus between the Anglo countries - the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Taiwan in the age of Neo-McCarthyism "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | April 10, 2023

McCarthyism, otherwise known as the so-called (Second) Red Scare, is officially defined as the repression and persecution of left-wing individuals and a campaign spreading fear of alleged communist and socialist influence on American institutions and of Soviet espionage in the United States during the late 1940s through the 1950s. The policy was spearheaded by a Republican US Senator Joseph McCarthy, but while he was the most prominent proponent of this internal (and foreign) policy approach, he most certainly wasnt the only one. And although the term McCarthyism is largely considered obsolete and/or outdated nowadays, as the role of one individual in such a massive nationwide policy framework is obviously overstated, it stuck and now even includes additional definitions and changes.

The McCarthyism of our age can certainly be dubbed Neo-McCarthyism, as it includes more than just the ideological rejection of non-Western ideas and is now targeting anything remotely connected to countries such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Syria, etc. This is especially true when it comes to Beijing, which Neo-McCarthyists see as the source of all evil, turning their emotional reaction into disastrous policies that make the geopolitical situation a lot worse.

One particularly obvious example of this is Taiwan, Chinas breakaway island province currently under US patronage. However, Beijing is actively pushing back against threats from the US and its numerous vassals and satellite states in the region, despite Washington DCs constant attempts of a crawling invasion so as to undermine Chinas national interests and security in seas surrounding the country.

On April 5, Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen made a stopover visit to Los Angeles after a tour to Latin America to visit Guatemala and Belize, its only remaining official allies in an attempt to stop the repeat of the recent episode when Honduras finally cut ties with Taipei and opted for Beijing instead. Tsai also met with senior security officials on Tuesday to discuss the regional situation ahead of her meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California, which China had once again warned against.

China is strongly opposed to the US arranging for Tsai Ing-wen to transit through its territory, and is strongly opposed to the meeting between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the third-ranking US official, and Tsai Ing-wen, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated, adding: It seriously violates the One-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and seriously undermines Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity.

And yet, Taipei enjoys strong bipartisan support in the US, one of the ver...

Palantir's Plan to Decipher the Mysteries of Long Covid "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Palantir's Plan to Decipher the Mysteries of Long Covid:

65 million people are still suffering from long Covid, the mysterious cocktail of symptoms that persist in some patients more than 12 weeks after an initial infection. Researchers are still working to understand this illness, but it's been slow progress so far.

This is because long Covid is not just a medical problemit's also a data problem, says Indra Joshi, director of health, research, and artificial intelligence at Palantir, which specializes in analyzing big data.

Before the pandemic, US hospitals kept their data to themselves, Joshi told WIRED Health this March, making it difficult for policymakers and researchers to identify patterns of disease occurring across the country. That's why Palantir worked with the US medical research agency, the National Institutes of Health, to create what Joshi describes as one of the largest collections of Covid-19 health records in the world.

The National COVID Cohort Collaborative, aka N3C, is essentially a giant, collaborative database, enabling clinicians and researchers to study the deidentified data of people suffering from Covid-19 or related conditions. "If you're diagnosed with Covid now, your data goes into this enclave," says Joshi, explaining that N3C now includes 2.1 billion clinical observations. The data enclave also encourages clinicians to enter data in a standardized format, making it easy for their insights to be compared with data collected from other US hospitals.

By harmonizing all this data, the N3C acts as a collective pool of information that researchers can dip into to try to find consensus on the ongoing mysteries of long Covid: What exactly are the symptoms? What treatments are people receiving? And how are they responding to those treatments? Already the N3C data has helped better define the symptoms that make up long Covid. It has also revealed that Black and Hispanic Americans, in comparison to white patients, appear to experience more symptoms and health problems related to long Covid, but are less likely to be diagnosed.

Moron Rep. McCaul pushes war: US troops in Taiwan 'on the table' if China invades "IndyWatch Feed World"

House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul has said the US may send troops to Taiwan should China invade the self-governed island. "If communist China invaded Taiwan, it would certainly be on the table and something that would be discussed by Congress and with the American people," the Texas Republican told Fox News. "Are they prepared to do this? Is Taiwan worth it? I can argue for a lot of reasons why it is." The potential move would represent a stark contrast to the the war in Ukraine, where the US has sent billions in weaponry to Kyiv but has refused to send troops.

5th Generation and gray zone warfare: Are we under attack? "IndyWatch Feed World"

By the author of The Prepper's Guide to Post-Disaster Communications and The Faithful Prepper I'm watching a lot of very bizarre disasters take place on American soil, and given that there are a number of actors in the world that absolutely hate America, I find it incredibly suspicious. We've already seen the food facility fires that are going up in smoke all over the place. But when you add in all of the bizarre train derailments, chemical spills, and the like, the only conclusion I believe one can come to is that America is currently under attack. The problem is that most people mistakenly fall into the trap of thinking that unless tanks, Apaches, and bazookas are involved, it's not war. This is a mistake. The face of war has changed, and the more you understand 5th Generation Warfare and gray zone warfare, the better you'll understand the happenings of today. In short:

Chinese Media Reveals Why Russia Unlikely to Have Leaked Sensitive Ukraine Docs "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ilya Tsukanov Sputnik 10.04.2023

The FBI and the Pentagon have kicked off investigations after the leak of a damning US intelligence assessment on the Ukrainian conflict. US officials and media immediately blamed Russia, while Kiev characterized the leak as Russian propaganda. The Kremlin said the docs show the dramatic extent to which NATO is entrenched in the conflict.

Russia is not likely to be behind the leak of the top secret US intelligence assessment of the situation in Ukraine, since it would prefer to keep the information under wraps and use it to its advantage, a major Chinese outlet speculates.

If Russia has obtained these classified documents, it would not post them online, because this will make Russia lose the source or sources that had provided these documents, an anonymous Chinese international security and intelligence expert told the Global Times. The leak is unlikely caused by Russian intelligence agencies, because this does not make sense, the expert said.

The source argued that there was no reason for Russia to let its enemies know that it has obtained this intelligence, because this will also make its enemies change plans, making the hard-won military intelligence useless.

Instead, GT noted, the leak goes to show to the world the disunity, distrust and divergences between the US, its allies and Kiev, and to demonstrate that Washington is the biggest obstacle for the international community to promote a ceasefire and peace talks to ending the Ukrainian crisis.

The documents demonstrate the precarious state of the Ukrainian military, and will both demoralize the Ukrainian military and reduce Western countries confidence in supporting Kiev against Russia, whether or not they are genuine, the Chinese newspaper suggested.

Whodunit?

US and Ukrainian officials immediately blamed Russian intelligence for the leak of the classified documents, and suggested that the assessment seems to combine a statistical analysis of supplies, possible operational and tactical plans, as well as a large volume of fictitious information.

The documents serve to confirm Russias public assessment on the state of the Ukrainian conflict, showing that Ukrainian air defenses have been depleted by months of strikes, and that Ukrainian casualties are over four times higher than those of the Russian side (contrasting sharply with public estimates by the Pentagon and the Ukrainian military of six-figure Russian losses).

The Pentagons reported efforts to scrub the documents from th...

Stand with Ukraine and Shun God "IndyWatch Feed World"

Behind the ghastly military conflict in Ukraine a proxy war has been declared against the Russian people. And deeper still, a spiritual conflict between the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a nationalist movement of stunning iniquity. The world has witnessed over the last year a shocking military collision between Russia and Ukraine. Yet behind the military conflict is a spiritual conflict between the historic Orthodox Church which has existed in Ukraine for over a thousand years, and a new nationalist sect created by the patriarch of Istanbul in 2018. The true shepherds of the Orthodox Church have always stood faithfully to defend the faithful, whether they were persecuted by pagan Rome, oppressed by the Ottoman Turks, or martyred by the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. The Zelensky state has sponsored soldiers to seize churches and monasteries, assault priests and monks of the canonical Orthodox Church. The regime has allowed a new nationalist sect created by...

The Climate Crisis Is Increasing Home Runs in Baseball "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Why have the number of home runs struck at baseball games gone up since the 1980s?

There are many possible factors, from steroids to alterations in bat and ball design to improved analytics. But one part of the answer may surprise you: climate change.

Theres a very clear physical mechanism at play in which warmer temperatures reduce the density of air. Baseball is a game of ballistics, and a batted ball is going to fly farther on a warm day, Dartmouth College assistant professor of geography Justin Mankin said in a press release.

Mankin is the senior author on a unique study published in the American Meteorological Society Friday that found that more than 500 home runs since 2010 could be attributed to warmer temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels. That amounts to an extra 58 runs a year between 2010 and 2019, The Guardian pointed out. Or around one percent of recent extra runs.

We dont think temperature is the dominant factor in the increase in home runs batters are now primed to hit balls at optimal speeds and angles, lead author and Dartmouth geography doctoral candidate Christopher Callahan said in the press release. That said, temperature matters and weve identified its effect. While climate change has been a minor influence so far, this influence will substantially increase by the end of the century if we continue to emit greenhouse gases and temperatures rise.

By 2100 under these conditions, 10 percent of home runs or more could be attributed to the climate crisis.

The study authors looked at 100,000 major league games and 220,000 hits, and then saw which home runs occurred during warmer than average temp...

BBC government-funded Twitter tag triggers journalists "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | April 10, 2023

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has ignited a feud with the BBC by labeling the British broadcaster a government funded media organization. The BBC denies taking state money and its defenders claim that being funded by the British government differs from being funded by the British public.

Twitter applied the label to the BBCs main account earlier this week, after slapping US broadcaster NPR with a similar tag describing it as US state-affiliated media. While Twitter previously reserved such labels for foreign media outlets like RT and Chinas CGTN, Musk said that applying it to NPR seems accurate.

NPRs tag was changed to read government-funded media after an outcry from US liberals.

The BBC bristled at receiving the tag. We are speaking to Twitter to resolve this issue as soon as possible, the broadcaster said in a statement on Sunday. The BBC is, and always has been, independent. We are funded by the British public through the licence fee.

On Twitter, the BBCs defenders pointed to the license fee as proof of the networks independence. The BBC, Deadline reporter Jake Kanter argued, is funded by the British public through a system known as the licence fee. The BBCs operations and editorial decision-making are entirely independent of the government.

However, commenters pointed out that the license fee is a government tax in all but name.

Set by the government, the fee is an annual payment of 159 ($197) owed by any household with a television or device capable of receiving television broadcasts. The BBC hires contractors to visit the homes of suspected evaders, and those who refuse to pay can be prosecuted by the broadcaster. Around 45,000 people per year are prosecuted for failing to pay the license, the Telegraph reported last month.

The UKs Office for National Statistics classifies the fee as a tax, and the BBC as part of the central government sector of the UK economy.

Additionally, the broadcaster does actually receive direct government funding for BBC World Service. The TV license covers 75% of the services operational costs while the rest is directly paid for by the UK government to the tune of some 90 million ($111 million) per year. Last month, the service was also...

Republicans choose abortion as the hill to die on "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It has long been clear that Republicans were using the abortion issue as a vote getting strategy. That seemed to have worked for a while to rally especially the religious zealots to their cause. But what has happened, as often occurs when a party panders to a fanatical base, is that the zealots get out of hand and push the issue much further than the party leaders would have liked. We see that with gun control measures. People in general approve of common sense gun control measures but Republicans are in the grip of the extremists so that now they cannot do anything at all, however reasonable, that might anger the extremists even if they say they want the right to openly carry bazookas and hand grenades in the streets.

What the Republican establishment seemed to have wanted is to place restrictions on abortion to make it very difficult to get while not blocking it entirely, because that policy of making it access harder seemed to have some appeal. They attacked the Roe v. Wade ruling by portraying it as allowing abortion on demand (though it did not) and called for its overthrow. They got that result by packing the US Supreme Court with anti-abortion justices who hid their beliefs during their conformation proceedings, and exulted over victory of their stealth strategy.

But the zealots essentially want to outlaw any and all abortions at any time and without any exceptions, even for rape and the health of the mother. These moves to so severely restrict abortion access are not popular as can be seen in how it galvanized voters to largely reject Republican candidates in the 2022 mid-term elections.

Conservatives are finding out the hard way that abortion isnt a 50-50 issue anymore.

Going back to the 1990s, Gallup polling showed Americans divided roughly evenly between those who called themselves pro-life and pro-choice. Exit polls from the 1990s and 2000s showed voters who said abortion or moral values were most important to their vote supported Republican candidates in greater numbers.

But those surveys were conducted when a right to an abortion was law of the land. The Supreme Courts Dobbs decision last year ending that constitutional right has exposed Americans broad opposition to the strict abortion bans adopted or proposed in GOP-controlled states. And its revealed that public surveys on the matter probably need more nuanced questions now.

Now, a four-point question probably best measures where Americans sit on the issue: legal in all cases, legal in most, illegal in all and illegal in most. The 2022 national exit poll used this device, finding that 29 percent of voters believed abortion should be legal in all cases, while another 30 percent thought it should be le...

Iran-linked MERCURY APT behind destructive attacks on hybrid environments "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Iran-linked APT group MERCURY is behind destructive attacks on hybrid environments masquerading as a ransomware operation.

The Microsoft Threat Intelligence team observed a series of destructive attacks on hybrid environments that were carried out by MuddyWater APT group (aka MERCURY). Threat actors masqueraded the attacks as a standard ransomware operation.

MERCURY (aka MuddyWaterSeedWorm and TEMP.Zagros) has been active since at least 2017, in January 2022 the USCYBERCOM has officially linked the Iran-linked APT group to Irans Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

The group was observed targeting both on-premises and cloud environments. According to Microsoft, MERCURY likely conducted the attacks in partnership with another actor tracked as DEV-1084, who carried out the destructive actions after MERCURY gained access to the target environment.

MERCURY likely exploited known vulnerabilities in unpatched applications for initial access before handing off access to DEV-1084 to perform extensive reconnaissance and discovery, establish persistence, and move laterally throughout the network, oftentimes waiting weeks and sometimes months before progressing to the next stage. reads the report published by Microsoft. DEV-1084 was then later observed leveraging highly privileged compromised credentials to perform en masse destruction of resources, including server farms, virtual machines, storage accounts, and virtual networks, and send emails to internal and external recipients.

DEV-1084 presented itself as cybercrime group likely as an attempt to hide its real motivation of a nation-state actor.

The link between the DEV-1084 cluster and MERCURY was established based on the following evidence:

  • Both DEV-1084 and MERCURY were observed sending emails from the IP address 146.70.106[.]89.
  • Both groups used MULLVAD VPN.

Ukraine attempts to blame Russia for humiliating Pentagon leak "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ahmed Adel | April 10, 2023

The Pentagon announced it was trying to remove from the internet a major leak of secret documents which have exposed plans relating to Ukraines war on Russia. For his part, Elon Musk sarcastically highlighted the vain attempt, saying on Twitter: Yeah, you can totally delete things from the Internet that works perfectly and doesnt draw attention to whatever you were trying to hide at all.

The American billionaire derided on Twitter the Pentagons attempt to remove social media posts containing leaked classified documents relating to the conflict in Ukraine. The day before his tweet, the New York Times newspaper indicated that officials were not successful in removing the publications from the internet.

The leak was described to the News York Times by a senior intelligence official as a nightmare for the Five Eyes, the intelligence sharing apparatus between the Anglo countries the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Some of the documents were found on Twitter and other sites on April 7, a day after US officials announced that they were investigating a potential leak of classified Ukrainian war plans. These war plans include an alarming assessment of Ukraines faltering air defence capabilities and notes that 12 brigades are being formed for Ukraine, including nine trained by the US and other NATO allies.

One of the leaks, dated February 23, is labelled Secret/NoForn, meaning it was not meant to be shared with foreign countries, and thus confirms the secrecy of the documents.

It is the belief of Mick Mulroy, a former senior Pentagon official, that the leak is a significant breach in security that could hamper Ukrainian military planning as it reportedly prepares for a spring offensive. As many of these were pictures of documents, it appears that it was a deliberate leak done by someone that wished to damage the Ukraine, US, and NATO efforts, he said.

The Kremlin said it had no doubts about the participation of the US or NATO, direct or indirect, in the conflict in Ukraine. None-the-less, the leaks would still provide a fascinating insight for decisionmakers in Moscow.

The New York Times reported that the leaks appear to be legitimate Defense Department documents. None-the-less, this did not stop Ukrainian officials from suggesting that the leak was only part of a Russian disinformation campaign aimed at influencing Ukraines possible spring offensive.

Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak told Reuters that the data contained a very large amount of fictitious information and Russia was trying to seize back the initiative in its invasion. His claim, instead, is part of Ukraines disinformation campaign, one that has been insisted upon......

Indonesian Indigenous group AMAN wins Skoll Award for defending land rights "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

JAKARTA The Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN), the main advocacy group for Indigenous communities in Indonesia, has won a 2023 Skoll Award for Social Innovation. Since its establishment in 1999, AMAN has been advocating for Indigenous rights to prevent communities from having their lands stolen. The main issue currently facing Indigenous communities in Indonesia is the massive expropriation of Indigenous territories and all the wealth within those territories. This has exacerbated climate change, as the clearing of Indigenous forests releases heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. On the other hand, protecting Indigenous peoples rights to their lands and forests is one of the best tool to fight climate change, as Indigenous peoples have been proven to be the best guardians of forests, even with their often-limited access to financial resources and lack of legal recognition. When compared with government-managed protection zones, forests managed by Indigenous communities are often better conserved. For example, a 2000-2012 study of the Amazon found that annual deforestation rates on tenured Indigenous forestlands were 2-3 times lower than outside these areas. To protect Indigenous peoples rights to their lands, AMAN has been carrying out a number of initiatives, like mapping Indigenous territories and lobbying for pro-Indigenous legislation. We thank the Skoll Foundation. This award shows that AMANs hard work for more than 20 years has been recognized as a tremendous fight, AMAN secretary general Rukka Sombolinggi told Mongabay. To date, 2,449 Indigenous communities, representing 20 million people, have joined AMAN. AMAN has also supported anThis article was originally published on Mongabay

The Turkish navy officially added the TCG Anadolu light aircraft carrier and amphibious assault ship to its arsenal on Monday, touting it as the world's first "drone carrier".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the ship is a turning point for the countrys defence industry, as 70 percent of the vessel was built using local resources over seven years.

"The TCG Anadolu is the world's first ship that carries armed drones, Erdogan said at its inauguration. He said the design was revised to host aircraft that are under development, like the Bayraktar TB3 drone, Kizil Elma unmanned fighter jet, and Hurjet light fighter aircraft.

In addition, thanks to the tanks and armored amphibious assault vehicles it carries, this ship has the features that will enable us to carry out military and humanitarian operations in every corner of the world when necessary," he added.

It was built in the Istanbul shipyard Sedef, and the ship, which is 231 metres long and 32 metres wide can carry helicopters as well.

Texas takes another step into the abyss "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Daniel Perry was an uber driver who ran a red light, drove into a crowd of Black Lives Matter protesters, and when one of them approached his car carrying an AK-47 (which, stupid and dangerous as it is, is legal in Texas), opened fire with a handgun and killed him. He was found guilty of murder in a jury trial.

In Texas. After he threatened to kill someone online.

Perrys defense team argued that he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors contended that Perry instigated what happened. They highlighted a series of social media posts and Facebook messages in which Perry made statements that they said indicated his state of mind, such as he might kill a few people on my way to work. They are rioting outside my apartment complex.

A friend responded, Can you legally do so? Perry replied, If they attack me or try to pull me out of my car then yes.

Guess what? The governor wants to free him immediately.

Abbott wants an army of undisciplined thugs who will murder people he doesnt like. Its the authoritarian mindset.

Its what happens in Uganda or El Salvador, said Cofer, a former prosecutor. Total abrogation of the rule of law. And whats even worse is that Abbott knows better. He was a smart Texas Supreme Court Justice. He knows this is legally wrong. Profoundly wrong. Pure politics.

But it works! I know I would never consider living in Texas. I wont even visit the state anymore. Abbott is doing a great job of driving anyone who would oppose him away.

Italy became the first Western country to ban ChatGPT. Heres what other countries are doing "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

It seems some countries in Europe might ban ChatGPT due to privacy reasons.

Italy isnt the only country reckoning with the rapid pace of AI progression and its implications for society. Other governments are coming up with their own rules for AI, which, whether or not they mention generative AI, will undoubtedly touch on it. Generative AI refers to a set of AI technologies that generate new content based on prompts from users. It is more advanced than previous iterations of AI, thanks in no small part to new large language models, which are trained on vast quantities of data.

There have long been calls for AI to face regulation. But the pace at which the technology has progressed is such that it is proving difficult for governments to keep up. Computers can now create realistic art, write entire essays, or even generate lines of code, in a matter of seconds.

We have got to be very careful that we dont create a world where humans are somehow subservient to a greater machine future, Sophie Hackford, a futurist and global technology innovation advisor for American farming equipment maker John Deere, told CNBCs Squawk Box Europe Monday.

Physicists Extend Qubit Lifespan in Pivotal Validation of Quantum Computing "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Quantum computing promises to be a revolutionary tool, making short work of equations that classical computers would struggle to ever complete. Yet the workhorse of the quantum device, known as a qubit, is a delicate object prone to collapsing.

Keeping enough qubits in their ideal state long enough for computations has so far proved a challenge.

In a new experiment, scientists were able to keep a qubit in that state for twice as long as normal. Along the way, they demonstrated the practicality of quantum error correction (QEC), a process that keeps quantum information intact for longer by introducing room for redundancy and error removal.

Gunmen Besiege Home Of Delta PDP Rep-Elect In Isoko Community,Kill Cattle Rearer, Steal Livestock "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

ISOKO REP ELECT

LAGOS APRIL 10TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Gunmen numbering over 10 have reportedly invaded the Erawha-Owhe country home of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives member-elect for Isoko federal constituency, Jonathan Ukodhiko.

The incident occurred in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta state, SaharaReporters has learnt.

SaharaReporters gathered that the invasion of the residence of the House of Representatives member-elect occurred in March after the week of the governorship and State Assembly elections held on March 18, 2023, but was kept away from the press and general public.

Confiding in SaharaReporters, a former council chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, The invasion took place at midnight which resulted in the carting away of over 10 live cows and other animals from the compound of the member-elect by the hoodlums and they killed the cattle rearer, a Hausa man and dumped his body in a bush.

I think the cattle rearer was not killed in the compound; we suspected he was taken to a nearby bush where he was killed and his decomposing body was found in the bush after several days of search.

The dastardly act is condemnable and an act of mere wickedness. This is an act that has never been seen in Owhe clan. The police have taken over the case now but no arrest has been made so far.

When contacted, Ukodhiko confirmed that story.

The issue is before the police and they are investigating the matter. Until the police finish their investigation, I have nothing to say for now. Thanks, he added.

My genetics class is going woke! "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ive been teaching the students all this basic transmission genetics all semester, and while its important and fundamental, it can have a bad effect on peoples brains. I cringe when I hear people talking about human traits using simple Mendelian terms like dominant and recessive because, while it works for many things, for others it misleads and is overly simplistic. I want my students to come away from the class knowing that genetics is complex and subtle and everything is polygenic and epistasis matters, and thats hard to do when theyre trying to figure out the basics of doing a fly cross.

Its also a problem because instilling only the basics of Mendel is a good way to make Nazis its easy to distort simple concepts they barely understand into props for your biases. Id like to forestall that. Also, Im in Minnesota, and Minnesota has a smug white people problem.

The racism you see in Minnesota is the type of racism where people say there is no racism. The only race is the human race, Myers [not me, no relation] said. How can we say the only race is the human race when all the people with dark skin are people with higher unemployment rates, dying from COVID, more likely to be arrested, more likely to be beaten by police and murdered? How does that happen when theres no race?

So Im going to wake up all the smart students in my class. My strategy involves handing them a digital folder full of articles from science journals as well as newspapers, telling them to pick one, and present it to the class (Im sure not going to just lecture on these things I want students to think about them.) Theyre getting the folder today, have to pick an article by Wednesday, and are going to prepare a ten minute summary and review for two weeks from today. Its going to be fun, right?

How Intel Scaled Down the 8086 Processor and Reverse-Engineering the Division Microcode "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

https://www.righto.com/2020/06/die-shrink-how-intel-scaled-down-8086.html

The revolutionary Intel 8086 microprocessor was introduced 42 years ago this month so I've been studying its die.1 I came across two 8086 dies with different sizes, which reveal details of how a die shrink works. The concept of a die shrink is that as technology improved, a manufacturer could shrink the silicon die, reducing costs and improving performance. But there's more to it than simply scaling down the whole die. Although the internal circuitry can be directly scaled down,2 external-facing features can't shrink as easily. For instance, the bonding pads need a minimum size so wires can be attached, and the power-distribution traces must be large enough for the current. The result is that Intel scaled the interior of the 8086 without change, but the circuitry and pads around the edge of the chip were redesigned.

[...] The photo above shows the two 8086 dies at the same scale. The two chips have identical layout in the interior,7 although they may look different at first. The chip on the right has many dark lines in the middle that don't appear on the left, but this is an artifact. These lines are the polysilicon layer, underneath the metal; the die on the left has the same wiring, but it is very faint. I think the newer chip has a thinner metal layer, making the polysilicon more visible.

The magnified photo below shows the same circuitry on the two dies. There is an exact correspondence between components in the two images, showing the circuitry was reduced in size, not redesigned. (These photos show the metal layer on top of the chip; some polysilicon is visible in the right photo.)

The Radical Hospitality of Peacemaking "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

David Porter was a co-founder and director of ECONI. He left Belfast in 2008 to lead the international reconciliation ministry at Coventry Cathedral, before being appointed by Archbishop Justin Welby in 2013 as his Director for Reconciliation. He became Chief of Staff at Lambeth Palace in 2016, retiring from that role in November 2022.

It was the helicopters, that potent background hum of troubles Belfast, that signalled what progress was being made or not made. Our home sat just below the Gilnahirk ridge with a view of Parliament Buildings at Stormont. Several times on 10 April 1998, two helicopters came in to land. The television screen confirmed that the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, was not yet ready for his ride home.

I was not in the room that day, but with thousands of others, my heart was. It certainly was not with those who had gathered at the gate the night before to try to disrupt whatever sellout was being brewed, the last ditch defenders of the narrow ground of Protestant Ulster.

Many in the room were more than just a talking head in the news. Since the breakdown of the IRA ceasefires in February 1996, along with other colleagues in ECONI (Evangelical Contribution on Northern Ireland), I had been involved in a number of contacts aimed at building relationships and resetting the conditions that would lead to this day.

There were dozens of such initiatives across civic society and from church groups. All had their own contribution to make to create the context in which the peace could be built. Following the initial ceasefires, based at the Belfast YMCA, ECONI had begun a public series the Christian Citizenship Forum aimed at exploring our responsibilities in the new era that presented itself. With this came our public statements in response to the landmark moments of the peace process.

Looking back, it was the extensive private dialogues involving a small group from ECONI that became the most rewarding activity of this period. We met with loyalists and republicans, unionists and nationalists, inviting them to speak at the forum, while engaging behind the scenes to build trust and understanding. Keeping in touch with the NIO and the Irish government, we took part in the Forum for Peace in Dublin.

When the IRA ceasefire broke in early 1996, we increased our contact with republicans. No one ever said making peace would be easy. I became part of a small group convened by Father Gerry Reynolds that met regularly in Clonard monastery with some of the republican leadership, and alongside this, we intensified our contacts with loyalists over monthly lunches in the home of David McMillan.

It was during a rather heated personal conversation with Tom Hartley, when the prospect of talks after a resumed ceasefire was looming, that he challenged me on the nature of the relationships we were building. His point was that politics is not just what happens in the room; it is often d...

Troubled Waters: The Geopolitics of Deep-Sea Mining "IndyWatch Feed War"

Following its decision to accept applications for deep-sea mining this July, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), a UN affiliate organization, has renewed interest in an emerging realm of geopolitical competition. Despite concerns over the lack of scientific research and the potential environmental impact, the momentum for deep-sea mining stems from global demand for battery metals to fulfill the intricate supply chain needs for manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and clean energy infrastructure. Lucrative deposits of cobalt, nickel, manganese, and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) have all been linked to deep-sea mining, with China, Russia, and Norway representing some of the most eager of participants in the nascent and controversial industry.

Deep-sea mining is the process of extracting minerals from the ocean floor. Unlike traditional forms of mining, which involve extracting minerals from the earths crust, deep-sea mining involves collecting nodules, crusts, and other deposits that have formed on the ocean floor over millions of years. These deposits are often found in areas known as polymetallic nodules, which cover large swaths of the ocean floor. These nodules are in areas that are thousands of meters deep, requiring significant capex spending and specialized technical equipment to bring the metals to surface for processing.

At present, research on the potential long-term implications of deep-sea mining is limited, prompting calls for a global moratorium on the practice from NGOs like Greenpeace, as well as several governments, including France, Germany, and Chile. The dearth of available scientific research led the ISA to take a gradual approach toward the development of standards and regulations for deep-sea mining. However, given current ISA provisions, the body is required to vet applications for deep-sea mining using whatever regulations currently exist by the time the application is received. The ISA also requires prospective mining contractors to obtain sponsorship by an ISA member, but with only three months remaining to develop regulations, the likelihood of resolving existing concerns from the ISAs pro-mortarium members is low.

Compounding the concerns of the environmental impact are the potential geopolitical implications of deep-sea mining. Given the glacial pace of its regulatory framework, the industry is dominated by a handful of states that possess the capital, equipment, and technical knowledge required for seabed mining. The dominance of a few countries in the deep-sea mining industry could exacerbate existing geopolitical tensions, particularly in areas where there are competing claims over maritime boundaries and resource rights. At present, the industrys most dominant players include Canada,...

Israeli police gather around an overturned car at the site of an alleged attack in Tel Aviv on 7 April 2023 (AFP)

The family of a Palestinian citizen of Israel, who was shot dead by police after allegedly carrying out a "car ramming" are raising doubts over the authorities' justification for killing him after law enforcement and medics made contradictory claims over what happened.

Israeli police initially labelled the incident, which took place on Friday and left one person dead, as a "terror attack" involving a "shooting and a car-ramming".

A car had crashed into a crowd of people after speeding towards Tel Aviv's beach promenade before overturning.

An Italian citizen, Alessandro Parini, was killed and seven others were wounded.

After the vehicle flipped, the driver - later identified as Yousef Abu Jaber from Kafr Qasim city - was shot by a police officer who said he thought Abu Jaber was carrying a gun.

The actively growing lava dome in the inner Jonggring Saloko summit crater generated a block-and-ash flow yesterday. The pyroclastic flow descended along the steep southeastern ravine and reached approx. 1,5 km length as can be seen in the video recorded by local observers in Huntap. Grey ash plumes formed as they separated from the current (so-called phoenix clouds). The reason for this flow was presumably either accumulated lava material from the front of the lava flow or destabilization of the lava dome resulting in the partial collapse.

Mouse "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I used to follow Jim Butchers Harry Dresden books, until I tired of them. Theyre puffalicious, but they remind me too much of S.M. Brusts condensed sci-fi con conversations, and they just started to sound self-similar.

But, one of the characters in those books that I enjoyed, naturally, was Dresdens dog Mouse. Mouse got the name because hes humongous, but once was small(ish) and gray(ish). Butcher teases us with a bit of lore regarding Mouse but never gets detailed: hes a Tibetan temple guard dog (a foo dog) and a supernatural power in his own right. [Mouse]

Just for the heck of it, I thought Id render Mouse in Midjourney.

Midjourney AI and mjr: a giant noble chinese temple dog, gray, realistic, alive.

The first thing I thought was that guy probably eats a 25# bag of kibble for breakfast. Then, I thought, I pity the poor fool who has to brush him. But maybe supernatural dogs dont get poopy butt, or armpit mats, I dont really know.

Midjourney AI and mjr: the chinese woman wearing hanfu is standing next to the huge dog

This one was harder to get: Midjourney has its own idea how big dogs are, and I had to feed back the other image of Mouse in order to get the proportions right. Finally I resorted to roughly compositing a human figure into the picture of the dog, so Midjourney would riff on it from there.

Finally, I tried this and I think it came out pretty well!

Midjourney AI and mjr: the chinese woman is brushing the huge dogs fur with a silver brush.

Who or What Is Moon of Alabama? And Why Is He Trying to Lynch Evan Gershkovich? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Is Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter arrested by the Russians last week, actually a spy?

Some people even in the United States think so. Personally, I believe that to state as much is extremely reckless and endangers journalists everywhere. But beyond that, it is a symptom of a disease that is afflicting a small but seemingly growing element of the American Left.

They have a propensity to always ascribe sinister motives to the US establishment (including journalists) while extending a breathtaking degree of trust to anyone on the other side, including dictators and mass oppressors of all stripes.

Look, weve all witnessed the history of American wrongdoing, and we all get it: The US has done plenty of terrible stuff. And almost certainly is still doing some. But to insist that nothing ever changes that some permanent cabal will continue to decide everything all the time with the most malevolent of intents, with no one able to stop it bespeaks a kind of madness, caused by a rigor mortis of the mind.

The thing that strikes me about the cabal is that some see it as all-powerful, calling all the shots with precision, but somehow also feckless and incompetent. Its hard enough to govern a small town or run a mom-and-pop business, yet these folks think the cabal is capable of running everything in the world, all nicely coordinated, in furtherance of some nefarious vision

It is from this madness that spring the constant suspicions and, from those, a kind of certainty that something is always afoot. Hence, if the Russians say a Wall Street Journal reporter is a US spy, well, by gosh, that must be true!

I recently got a note from a friend I respect, who had read someone making the case that Moscow is right. The proponent of this was a smallish blog you may not have heard of, but that apparently has quite a dedicated following and is frequently cited by its followers as thoughtful, knowledgeable, and perhaps authoritative.

I want to take a look here at this blog, and the phenomenon of which it is a part. Utahs Secretive Medical Malpractice Panels Make It Even Harder to Sue Providers "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Jessica Lancaster didnt want to tell the panel of three strangers in front of her about the moment her chiropractor insisted she lift up her shirt.

How Kelby Martins breathing became heavier as he groped her breasts, which had been healing from surgery; how after he touched her chest, he didnt follow through with any type of chiropractic treatment; how she left his office in August 2021 in a haze.

But Lancaster wanted to sue Martin to hold him accountable, and before she could do that, Utah law required her to make her case to the panel.

The panel concluded last August that Martin had departed from the normal standard of care, Lancasters lawyers later disclosed in a court filing. In response to a request for comment, Martins lawyer pointed to court papers in which the chiropractor denied Lancasters allegations against him. The case is pending; his license remains in good standing with the state.

There was a time when a majority of states had adopted malpractice screening panels in some form. A 1984 analysis by the American Medical Association found 30 states had implemented panels at some point. The goal was to cut down on frivolous lawsuits and encourage settlements of legitimate claims.

Over the years, many of those states found these panels ineffective or in violation of their constitutions, and some did away with them entirely. Heres an idea that [Nephlonor] shared a couple years ago, but is worth keeping in mind because one never knows when it might come in handy. He 3D printed a marble run track and kept the generated tree supports. As you can see in the image above, the track resembles a roller-coaster and the tree supports function as an automatically-generated scaffolding for the whole thing. Clever!

As mentioned, these results are from a couple of years ago; so this idea should work even better nowadays. Tree supports have come a long way since then, and are available in more slicers than just Cura.

Massive fire guts popular clothing market in Bangladesh capital Dhaka "IndyWatch Feed World"

A large fire has gutted thousands of shops at a popular clothing market in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, with shop owners devastated by the loss weeks before Eid, the Muslim festival marking the end of Ramadan. Hundreds of firefighters and army personnel battled the inferno as it tore through the clothing market, turning it into a pile of ashes. The blaze was brought under control at 12:45pm local time (06:45 GMT) more than six hours after it started at Bangabazar Market early on Tuesday. Several people have been injured but no deaths have been reported so far. Authorities were still trying to figure out the cause of the blaze.

Long COVID: For 40 Million Americans, the Pandemic Isnt Winding Down "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

On March 29 the Senate passed with bipartisan support a bill to end the emergency status of the COVID-19 pandemic, joining the House, which passed similar legislation at the end of January. President Joe Biden says he strongly opposes the bill but his administration nonetheless plans to let the emergency status expire on May 11

Not surprisingly, given the politicization and political weaponization that has characterized the COVID-19 crisis from its beginning, much of this activity in Washington comes down to symbolism and posturing. And indeed, as Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) put it: Theres a right way to wind down. This is about messaging.

Posturing and messaging aside, the timing of this move to wind down the emergency is greatly at odds with the reality of the ongoing global pandemic.

There have been, to be sure, a reduced number of reported COVID-19 deaths. So far this year has averaged fewer than 4,000 deaths per week, compared to an average of over 5,000 deaths per week for 2022. In 2020 and 2021 respectively, more than 350,000 and 475,000 Americans died from Covid (this was enough to place Covid as the third leading cause of death, with heart disease and cancer each claiming over 600,000 Americans per year). Thats approximately 6,700 per week in 2020 and 9,000 per week in 2021.

So weekly death totals have dropped significantly from the worst of the pande......

Strong fire breaks out in Mexico City Central Market "IndyWatch Feed World"

On Thursday, some 200 firefighters worked several hours with tankers to control a large fire in Mexico City Central Market, the main food store in the Mexican capital. The flames, which started at about 19:00, caused a smoke column of more than 50 meters. Hopefully, they did not leave injured or dead people. Mexico DF Mayor Claudia Sheimbaum said fire brigades extinguished about 90 percent of them. The fire affected 5,640 square meters of the market's empty packaging sector, where cardboard, wood, plastic boxes, pallets, reed baskets, and raffia sacks were stored. Neighbors were worried about the flames since several gas stations are close to this market. Sheimbaum confirmed that these establishments have already been closed. She also asked locals to keep calm and contribute to the work of firefighters and emergency teams.

Prominent far-right Israeli government ministers and lawmakers led a massive pro-settlement march in the occupied West Bank on Monday, in what Palestinians described as a provocative endorsement of settlement expansion.

The march, secured by hundreds of Israeli soldiers, advanced towards the evacuated settlement outpost of Evyatar, near Huwwara in Nablus, the town which was set ablaze in February by hundreds of settlers.

Among the thousands of people who participated were seven ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and National Missions Minister Orit Strock.

At least 20 MPs also joined, along with rabbis and settlement leaders, including members of the Nachala settlement movement and advocates for settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Award-Winning Complete Street Just Another Deadly Stroad "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The intentions behind the concept of Complete Streets are clear and straightforward. A street should be a safe place for everyone who uses it. Its not enough to design a street for automobiles and make everything else an afterthought; we have to accommodate the mobility of everyone in a way that respects their humanity. An urban street shouldn't be deemed complete until it does.

I absolutely support these concepts, but I dont support Complete Streets.

In my career, I have watched the concept of Complete Streets go from being a fringe, revolutionary idea to being fully co-opted by the old-school transportation professions. It now largely resembles the worst of their mindless excesses instead of the radical ideals Complete Streets advocates originally set out to promote.

To gain widespread acceptance, the Complete Streets strategy was to graft itself on to existing systems and bureaucracies, lubricating bottom-up change with meaningful amounts of top-down funding. State departments of transportation and local transportation offices took the money, and they have continued to check the boxes necessary to keep getting the money, but the results consistently fall short of the original concept.

In a recent Crash Analysis Studio, we examined a fatal crash on Ager Road, a Complete Street in Hyattsville, Maryland. A woman named Hellen Jorgenson was attempting to cross the street on foot when she was struck by an automobile being driven along Ager Road. We published a report detailing the many design factors that contributed to the crash. As we examined this location, I reacted with shock to the conscious indifference the design demonstrates to the safety of anyone outside of an automobile. It was only later that I was informed that multiple industry organizations have recognized Ager Road with some of their highest awards.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has named Ager Road one of their 2023 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award recipients. ASCE called Ager Road a Green-Complete Streets Project and claims the project improved the safety, functionality, and aesthetics of the street. According to the ASCE, Ager Road underwent a road diet to reduce speeding and improve pedestrian facilities.

The Ager Road project also won an award from the County Engineers Association...

Stationed at Army posts thousands of miles apart, two soldiers faced a flurry of criminal charges after they allegedly assaulted women within days of each other in early 2017.

One soldier was accused of physically assaulting his wife and firing a gun as she tried to flee their home near Fort Hood in Texas. Police later found a bullet hole in a window screen.

The other told investigators in Alaska that hed had sex with a fellow soldier who he knew was drunk and incapable of providing consent. They later found DNA evidence of his semen on her shorts.

Military prosecutors deemed the cases strong enough to pursue them in court. But the Army instead kicked the soldiers out, allowing them to return to civilian life with scant public record of the accusations against them.

The two cases are among hundreds that lay bare a long-standing but little-known practice that permits service members facing criminal charges to circumvent trial by being discharged from the military. The service members often receive negative marks on their personnel records but avoid the possibility of a federal conviction.

A federal watchdog agency in 1978 called for abolishing the practice, known as administrative separati...

Delta Govt Reacts To Media Report Of Deportation Of Anambra Female Beggar "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Delta State logo

LAGOS APRIL 10TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta State Government has refuted reports that it deported a woman from Anambra State, who was begging for alms and constituting nuisance in Asaba.
The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, said in a statement that the woman, 32-year old Ogochukwu Nwabude, who was with a baby, was at the Inter Bau Roundabout in the capital city, for about two weeks begging for alms.
He said that a check conducted on her by officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development after observing her for a period revealed that she was stable and of sound mind, but needed financial help.
According to Ifeajika, moved by her need, and as with standard procedure in handling such matters, the ministry gave her some assistance, especially as she was with a baby, and returned her to its counterpart (Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development) in Anambra for necessary support.
He explained that the measure was a routine activity on such cases, and often transpired among states in the country and the Federal Capital Territory.
Anambra State Government was grateful to its Delta counterpart for the effort, and promptly began the process of assistance to the woman.
The insinuations in some quarters that the woman was deported by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa or Delta State Government are, therefore, uncharitable.
The Delta State Government acted in good faith and within the ambit of regulations, which the Anambra State Government acknowledged with gratitude.
And, it is necessary to state that other states in the country had returned some of our citizens to us at different times, and still do. It is a normal routine that should not be politicised because it bothers on serious humanitarian service.
What the Delta State Government did was the routine procedure in rehabilitating persons of that nature and it is the standard practice among states in the country.
We provided her with some assistance and returned her to her state of origin to ensure that she is properly re-integrated into the society, Ifeajika stated.

NASA's TEMPO Mission Could Bring You Hyper-Local Pollution Alerts "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

NASA's TEMPO Mission Could Bring You Hyper-Local Pollution Alerts:

An advanced tool for monitoring air pollution from space is set to launch on Friday morning, and it'll be hosted on a commercial satellite.

A soon-to-launch NASA mission is set to offer more data on North America's air quality than researchers and public health programs have ever had available before. A new monitoring instrument hosted on a commercial satellite will offer continent-wide, hourly updates on air pollution, at about a four square mile resolution, according to the space agency and partner groups behind the project.

The Tropospheric Emissions Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) instrument will keep tabs on the air quality in a region stretching from the oil sands in Canada to south of Mexico City, and from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts, according to a NASA news statement.

The device will use advanced imaging to collect detailed light scattering data (i.e. hyperspectral data) on sunlight reflected off of Earth's atmosphere at varying levels. Using this information, scientists back on the ground will be able to translate those wavelengths of light into local concentrations of different pollutants in the air, explained Dennis Nicks, director of payload engineering at Ball Aerospacethe company that NASA contracted to design and build the TEMPO instrument, during a Wednesday press briefing.

Samsung employees unwittingly leaked company secret data by using ChatGPT "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Samsung employees have unwittingly leaked top secret data by providing them to the popular chatbot service ChatGPT.

Samsung employees have shared internal documents, including meeting notes and source code, with the popular chatbot service ChatGPT. ChatGPT uses data provided by the users to train itself and build its experience, with the risk that this data can be available to other users that will query the popular chatbot.

Samsung engineers used ChatGPT to assess the company source code, they asked the chatbot to optimize test sequences for identifying faults in the chips they were designing. According to the website Techradar, in just under a month, the company suffered three data leaks caused by its employees leaking sensitive information via ChatGPT.

In another case, an employee used ChatGPT to convert meeting notes into a presentation, the contents of which were obviously not something Samsung would have liked external third parties to have known. reported TechRadar.

The multinational IT firm has decided to start developing its own AI for internal use.

Samsung Electronics is warning its employees of the potential risks associated with the use of ChatGPT, explaining that there is no way to prevent the leak of the data provided to OpenAIs chatbot service.

It is not clear if Samsung has requested the deletion of the data provided by its workers to OpenAI.

Early this month, the Italian Data Protection Authority, Garante Privacy, temporarily banned ChatGPT due to the illegal collection of personal data and the absence of systems for verifying the age of minors.

The Authority pointed out that OpenAI does not alert users that it is collecting their data.

According to the announcement, there is no legal basis underpinning the massive collection and processing of personal data to train the algorithms on which the platform relies.

According to Israeli reports, the raid is unrelated to the manhunt for those behind the shooting in the Jordan Valley on Friday that left two Israeli settlers dead.

High-Power, Room-Temperature, Coherent Microwave Source "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Magnetic spin excitations can combine with photons to produce exotic particles that emit laser-like microwaves.

One of the challenges for building systems for quantum computing and communications has been the lack of laser-like microwave sources that produce sufficient power but dont require extreme cooling. Now a research team has demonstrated a new room-temperature technique for making coherent microwave radiationthe kind that comes from a laser [1]. The device exploits the interaction of a magnetic material with electromagnetic fields. The researchers expect that the work will lead to microwave sources that can be built into chips employed in future quantum devices.

The devices that store quantum bits for quantum computers often require microwave signals to input and retrieve data, so lasers operating at microwave frequencies (masers)and other sources of coherent microwavescould be very useful. But even though masers were invented before lasers, most maser technologies work only at ultracold temperatures. A 2018 design works at room temperature but doesnt produce very much power [2].

European Cup Rugby Review the sharp end of the season approaches "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

The last few weeks since Irelands historic fourth grand slam have showcased both the strengths and weaknesses of Irish Rugby. Leinster seem to march inexorably on to either or both the European Cup and URC titles, although nothing can ever be taken for granted in sport. However, Ulster, Munster and Connacht have all been eliminated from their European Cup competitions and the latter two may struggle to qualify for the European Cup top tier competition next season.

It was no disgrace for Ulster to lose, 30-15, to Leinster at a rain sodden and packed out Lansdowne road. Most teams would struggle to get that close to Leinster on current form. The match was competitive for the first hour albeit with Leinster dominating territory and possession until two yellow cards did for Ulsters chances. Leinster played the conditions superbly and showed that while other teams need things to go their way, Leinster always seem to find a way to win.

That was further illustrated in the Quarter-final by Leinsters response to going a man down against Leicester due to a harsh yellow card for Doris while the match was still competitive at 17-7. Leinster won his 10 minute suspension period 10-0, destroying the Leicester scrum and maul while a man down. Leinster always seem to have another gear to go to in adversity and their finishing was devastatingly clinical when really required. Beating the reigning Premiership champions 55-24 puts Ulsters performance in some perspective.

What is it about Garry Ringrose that some people dont quite get? He wasnt selected for the Lions, or this years team of the 6 Nations tournament and his name isnt ODriscoll, but what more must he do to convince the doubters that he is the best 13 in the world? In fairness, Jones, Fickou and Lukhanyo Am are very good 13s, but do they have Ringroses all-round game? To think Chris Harris was selected ahead of him for the Lions, and he cant even make the Scotland team.

The other heartening thing about Leinster (and Irelands) recent performances is that very good players seem to be getting better and better. Keenan, OBrien, Lowe, Ross Byrne, Gibson Park, Sheehan, Baird, Ryan, Conan, Doris, and Van Der Flier have all been around for a few years but seem to be raising their ceiling almost with every match. When you add in established stars like Furlong, Porter, Kelleher, Sexton, Henshaw and Larmour, it is easy to see why Leinster are odds on favourites to win everything in sight.

However, the other three-quarter finals also produced matches of outstanding quality and the Semi-final line-up now includes four former winners of the tournament. Toulouse beat the Sharks 54 20 which makes the match look like a walk in the park for Toulouse, but in reality, it was anything but. Sharks fought them all the way until nearly the 70th. Minute when Toulouse cut loose and scored four excellent tries in rapid succession. Either...

Switzerland Stops Recommending COVID-19 Vaccination "IndyWatch Feed World"

Swiss authorities have stopped recommending COVID-19 vaccination, including for people who are designated at high risk from COVID-19. Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health now says that "no COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for spring/summer 2023." People designated at high risk also aren't recommended to get a COVID-19 vaccine, authorities said. Officials attributed the change to the number of citizens who have received a vaccine, recovered from COVID-19, or have received a vaccine and also enjoy natural immunity from post-recovery protection. "Nearly everyone in Switzerland has been vaccinated and/or contracted and recovered from COVID-19. Their immune system has therefore been exposed to the coronavirus. In spring/summer 2023, the virus will likely circulate less. The current virus variants also cause rather mild illness," Swiss health officials said.

Nintendo Hunts Down Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Leaker on Discord "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

zeldatokAs Nintendos official website for Switch game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom states, The adventure begins on May 12. Officially, at least.

The hotly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will go on sale next month in digital and physical formats, with the latter also available as a special Collectors Edition.

Targeted at Zelda connoisseurs, the special edition includes The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (physical version), Artbook, SteelBook case, Steel Poster, and a set of four pin badges.

Pre-Release Leak: February 2023

On February 20, 2023, Eurogamer reported that a 200-page Artbook had been leaked online, containing details of new characters, enemies, enemy types, and new locations.

Its currently unclear how this art book managed to leak, so far in advance of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdoms official launch date, the publication noted at the time.

Two months later, its clear that a) Nintendo is very aware of the leak and b) they have a specific internet user in mind as the potential leaker.

DMCA Takedown Sent to Discord

On February 21, Nintendo of America sent a DMCA notice to Discord. The complaint targeted a Discord channel named Tears of the Kingdom Official Discord Server.

The notice went on to target six specific URLs featuring images or links to images from Nintendos copyright-protected and unreleased special edition art book for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom video game in violation of Nintendos rights.

pirate-shipJust eight minutes after the takedown notice was sent to Discord, the platform acknowledged the complaint and told Nintendo that the content will be removed promptly.

Around ten hours after sending the initial takedown notice, Nintendo followed up with a request for immediate review and takedown of the Discord channel, noting that members were still distributing the pre-release artwork using direct messages and links.

Additionally, some members have been assigned the...
