Morgen ist in Berlin Volksabstimmung zur Klimakatastrophe.Die ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

TUT ENDLICH WAS.

Cigna doctors denied over 300,000 requests for payments using this method, spending an average of 1.2 seconds on each case, the documents show. The company has reported it covers or administers health care plans for 18 million people.
Die sind damit eine der grten Krankenkassen der USA.

Ancient fires may be helping the Amazon survive droughts modern ones, not so much "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Ancient forest fires seem to have played a role in enhancing resistance to drought in the Amazon, a recent study suggests. The research, published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, focused on areas without known recent fires, but with high concentrations of pyrogenic carbon (PyC), a material found in the soil thats produced by burning vegetation. A higher presence of PyC in these areas indicates a record of forest fires that happened a long time ago. Where its concentrations in the soil were higher, the researchers found, characteristics related to drought resistance, such as higher soil fertility and water-holding capacity, were also more noticeable. Recent works have shown that the Amazonian forests already had fire events centuries or millennia ago, although on a much smaller scale than what is seen today, says study lead author Laura Vedovato, a researcher at the University of Exeter, U.K. This discovery against the commonplace notion that this humid region only started to experience fires in the past few decades, because of a combination of intentional burning by farmers, deforestation and climate change. However, the long-term consequences of these ancient fires are barely understood. This is an unprecedented study, it has never been carried out in other tropical forests, Vedovato told Mongabay. A Comprehensive Look at FDM Supports "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

When we first started 3D printing, we used ABS and early slicers. Using supports was undesirable because the support structures were not good, and ABS sticks to itself like crazy. Thankfully todays slicers are much better, and often we can use supports that easily detach. [Teaching Tech] shows how modern slicers create supports and how to make it even better than using the default settings.

The video covers many popular slicers and their derivatives. If youve done a lot with supports, you might not find too much of this information surprising, but if you havent printed with supports lately or tried things like tree supports, you might find a few things that will up your 3D printing game.

One thing we really like is that the video does show different slicers, so regardless of what slicer you like to use, youll probably find exactly what different settings are called. Of course, because slicers let you examine what they produce layer-by-layer, you can do like the video and examine the results without printing. [Michael] does do some prints with various parameters, though, and you can see how hard or easy the support removal is depending on some settings. The other option is to add support to your designs, as needed manually, or even better dont design things that need support.

This video reminded us of a recent technique we covered that...

Android app from China executed 0-day exploit on millions of devices "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Can you imagine if we had computer/brain interfaces what would happen? Well need brain firewalls and antivirus.

Android apps digitally signed by Chinas third-biggest e-commerce company exploited a zero-day vulnerability that allowed them to surreptitiously take control of millions of end-user devices to steal personal data and install malicious apps, researchers from security firm Lookout have confirmed.

The malicious versions of the Pinduoduo app were available in third-party markets, which users in China and elsewhere rely on because the official Google Play market is off-limits or not easy to access. No malicious versions were found in Play or Apples App Store. Last Monday, TechCrunch reported that Pinduoduo was pulled from Play after elsewhere. TechCrunch reported the malicious apps available in third-party markets exploited several zero-days, vulnerabilities that are known or exploited before a vendor has a patch available.

Sophisticated attack

A preliminary analysis by Lookout found that at least two off-Play versions of Pinduoduo for Android exploited CVE-202320963, the tracking number for an Android vulnerability Google patched in updates that became available to end users two weeks ago. This privilege-escalation flaw, which was exploited prior to Googles disclosure, allowed the app to perform operations with elevated privileges. The app used these privileges to download code from a developer-designated site and run it within a privileged environment.

BEST OF THE WEB: Why Crashing Banks Will Usher in Central Bank Digital Currency "IndyWatch Feed World"

Three large banks failed in a single week in March 2023, and the ripple effect could easily take down the entire banking system, although government officials insist the banking sector "remains strong" and that the problems faced by these banks "do not appear to be widespread."1 Cascading Domino of Bank Failures The cascading bank failures began March 8 with the shut down and liquidation of the crypto bank Silvergate Capital.2 As reported by Government Executive:3 "During 2022, Silvergate's deposit base grew dramatically, almost doubling its assets to $210 billion. But the bank did not have either the administrative capacity or market demand to lend out all of the money, as banks normally do. So, it invested the excess deposits in Treasury bonds and mortgage investment products. But the bond purchases became a problem as the Federal Reserve began to raise interest rates to address inflation."

To save Hainan gibbons, Earths rarest primate, experts roll out the big tech "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Emmanuel Dufourq had a gargantuan task at hand in mid-2019. He had the job of listening to 6,000 hours of audio data collected from Bawangling National Nature Reserve in the southern Chinese province of Hainan, thousands of miles away from his home base in Cape Town, South Africa. The audio had been collected in 2016 over the course of six months by researchers at the Zoological Society of London in a bid to study and conserve Hainan gibbons (Nomascus hainanus), the rarest primates on Earth and a critically endangered species. Dufourq spent the ensuing months listening to the audio and training a machine-learning algorithm to enable automated identification of gibbon sounds. Its like teaching a child about the world, you show examples saying, this is a cat, and this is a dog, Dufourq, resident researcher at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, told Mongabay in a video interview. Its this repetitive process of showing information to a computer software so that it can learn to identify the gibbons on its own. His work seems to have yielded results. According to a 2021 study published by his team in the journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, the algorithm was able to identify nearly 80% of the audio segments that contained gibbon calls. A more recent study, published in September 2022 in the journal Ecological Informatics, improved upon the model; now, the algorithm can recognize false positives sounds mistakenly thought to be gibbon calls by virtue of being fed humanThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Two Decades and $90 Billion US Dollars Later: Dissecting The Afghan Militarys Total Collapse "IndyWatch Feed World"

In February, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) published an extensive investigation into the spectacular collapse of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), which the U.S. spent two decades and $90 billion building. In common with previous SIGAR reports, it offers a remarkably uncompromising, no-punches-pulled assessment, exposing corruption, incompetence, lies, and delusion every step of the way.

At the reports core is a highly detailed timeline of the ANDSFs and, therefore, the Afghan governments disintegration. That SIGAR was able to construct such a painstaking obituary is nothing short of miraculous, for the Special Inspector General was stonewalled and obstructed at every turn by the agencies it is officially charged with scrutinizing.

The Pentagon and State Department rejected SIGARs jurisdiction over them, declined to review interim drafts of the report, denied access to their staff, and mostly refused to answer requests for information. Very few documents SIGAR asked for were turned over, and material disclosed was often not materially relevant to our objectives.

In lieu of cooperation from the guilty parties, SIGAR conducted a panoply of probing interviews with U.S. and Afghan officials. While often unnamed, their admissions and analysis provide stunning insight into conversations, deliberations, and machinations hidden from public view at the time. Together, these accounts help explain how the ANDSF, much-vaunted by the White House until its demise, failed so spectacularly.

It is a highly cinematic retelling that is part thriller, part farce. Take, for example, a former senior Afghan national security official recounting the morning of August 15, 2021, the day Kabul fell. As Americans rushed to depart the country, en route to a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, he was told by the Presidential Protective Service chief that the Taliban, contrary to promises not to enter the city, had done so.

In the presidents office, the pair scrambled to draft an official statement to be transmitted domestically and internationally on the groups unwelcome arrival. A secretary was asked to request some green tea from catering, as was customary in such meetings:

He went and brought the tray himself. Wait a minute, what happened to the server? He said, theres no one left. People in our offices had abandoned and they had gone[By around] 10 or 11, we no longer had a consolidated security force.

This mass walkout was evident in every state apparatus. The president contacted the head of the...

Moscow waiting for Western leaders to sober up Lavrov "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | March 27, 2023

Moscow will determine how its future relations with Western nations will develop only after they come to their senses, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

Speaking at the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, which provides support to Russian and foreign NGOs and think tanks, Lavrov accused the US and its allies of being mired in cave Russophobia, while sacrificing the glaring problems in their own societies.

When and if they sober up, we will decide on our position regarding further relations with them. But we will make this decision, of course, on our own and based on our terms, the foreign minister added.

Lavrov went on to point out that, despite the ongoing dirty campaign to cancel everything linked to Russia, it still had a lot of friends worldwide including in the West who like Russian culture and share the traditional family values it promotes.

At the same time, the minister warned that Russia would give a harsh response to all hostile actions. He claimed that Western countries wanted to stir unrest in Russia and undermine its stability. They have found very capable agents of their will in the current Nazi regime in Ukraine, whose roots were laid a long time ago, Lavrov said.

Against this backdrop, the top diplomat reiterated that Russia was fighting to protect not only the Russian-speaking population in the new territories that chose to join the country in public referendums last autumn, but also its own statehood.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West against supporting Ukraine, arguing that such policies make it a direct participant in the conflict. While Moscow maintains it is open to talks with Kiev, on Saturday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that the US had maniacally set itself up for not allowing Ukrainians to even think about a potential peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Iran Hostages, Carter, Reagan, and Bush: What the NY Times Missed "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Recently, The New York Times published an article with a stunning new claim that seemingly verifies a long-alleged plot by Ronald Reagans 1980 campaign to prevent Jimmy Carter from winning reelection.

The fact of the Times publishing the scoop was significant, since the paper has generally dismissed the so-called October Surprise theory, relying on a congressional investigation that I and many believe was a whitewash.

In fact, though I have come to believe theres enough evidence to conclude that the Reagan campaign did carry out this outrageous and illegal operation, I also have doubts about the new material.

But my big beef is how the Times, following a familiar pattern, presents something in isolation as if completely unaware of, or unwilling to discuss, the much vaster criminality of which it is part. That larger framework is required for anyone trying to understand the political corruption and immorality that has long afflicted America, and the profound consequences still being felt 43 years later.

Carter Election Mystery

The article recounts the story of a former Texas politician, Ben Barnes, who says he accompanied his friend and business partner John Connally, a former Democratic Texas governor turned Republican, on a trip to the Middle East in 1980. During the trip, Barnes says, they met a slew of Arab leaders. Barnes now says he suspects the real purpose of the trip was to help Reagan steal the election:

Mr. Barnes said he was certain the point of Mr. Connallys trip was to get a message to the Iranians to hold the hostages until after the election. Ill go to my grave believing that it was the purpose of the trip, he said.

This is a new wrinkle on a topic that has confounded investigators and researchers for decades.

AI Puns "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I think this one is actually pretty good.

Thats a dad joke, right? Actually, it reminds me of a joke attributed to Voltaire and the Marquis de Bivre allegedly challenged by the king to make a witty pun about me he replied, Ah sire, le roi nest pas un sujet! (It works in translation: Sire, the monarch is not a subject!

As they say, quit while youre ahead. But, no:

Im more fond of visual quirkiness, but that ought to be understandable since I like to make things. Seldom are they funny, but I notice visual quirks and thats often what makes me happy about a given thing.

------ divider ------

It has something to do with my memory (which does not work so well, anymore) but I often find lyrics from songs breaking into my live-stream, often from the deep past. I was telling Jenna the Welder that she needs to wear her fire resistant boots when forging hot steel, and muttered, shoes that no man would want to wear (a fragment from Bauhaus) and later that evening I decided to ask Midjourney AI for some shoes that no man would want to wear I also asked ChatGPT where the lyrics shoes that no man would want to wear come from, and it told me about a song:

Walking in Memphis by American singer-songwriter Marc Cohn. The song was released in 1991 and became a hit, reaching number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

I then asked ChatGPT about The Man With X-Ray Eyes from 1981 and it apologized.

Shoes that no man would want to wear
[Incomprehensible] the nights last cold stare
Red fist curled round the house
Wash away, boy, Shellys shoes

Did Marc Cohn listen to Bauhaus back in the day? Bauhaus actually used that trope at least twice, another time on an errata track called Departure:

Compensation Claims for Nord Stream Blast After Identifying Responsible Justified: Kremlin "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | March 27, 2023

Moscow may insist on compensation for the blasts that ruptured the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines last autumn, Dmitry Birichevsky, head of the Russian Foreign Ministrys department for economic cooperation, said on Monday.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, the diplomat said that Russia did not rule out the possibility of later raising the issue of compensatory damages over the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which directly connected Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea.

Birichevsky did not say from whom Russia would be demanding payment, nor did he specify in what form or amount it should be.

He noted that after veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh released his bombshell report last month pinning the blame on the US for the sabotage a claim dismissed in Washington Russia prepared a resolution urging the UN Security Council to launch an independent international investigation into the matter.

However, Birichevsky claimed that Western countries are actively sabotaging the work on the draft resolution, claiming that the international investigation lacks added value.

Despite this opposition, Russia would continue to push for a comprehensive and open international investigation, he said, stressing that Moscows representatives should absolutely take part in the process.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov supported a possible push for compensation. He described the claim as justified, arguing that the available data indicate that such a terrorist attack against critical infrastructure could not have been staged without the involvement of the state and intelligence services.

In an interview on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he fully agrees with Hershs conclusions on who orchestrated the blasts. The American journalist alleged that US President Joe Biden ordered the attack because he did not like the German governments reluctance to send more military support to Ukraine.

Earlier this month, the New York Times claimed, citing sources, that a pro-Ukrainian group may have been behind the attack on the pipelines while German media reported that a yacht allegedly used in the sabotage belonged to a Polish-based company owned by two Ukrainians.

Kremlin Press Secretary Peskov has dismissed those reports as a coordinated hoax meant to divert attention from the real culprits behind the blasts.

We Dont Have to Choose Between Nuclear Madmen "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Norman Solomon, World BEYOND War, March 27, 2023

The announcement by Vladimir Putin over the weekend that Russia will deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus marked a further escalation of potentially cataclysmic tensions over the war in neighboring Ukraine. As the Associated Press reported, Putin said the move was triggered by Britains decision this past week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium.

Theres always an excuse for nuclear madness, and the United States has certainly provided ample rationales for the Russian leaders display of it. American nuclear warheads have been deployed in Europe since the mid-1950s, and current best estimates say 100 are there now in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Count on U.S. corporate media to (appropriately) condemn Putins announcement while dodging key realities of how the USA, for decades, has been pushing the nuclear envelope toward conflagration. The U.S. governments breaking of its pledge not to expand NATO eastward after the fall of the Berlin Wall instead expanding into 10 Eastern European countries was only one aspect of official Washingtons reckless approach.

During this century, the runaway motor of nuclear irresponsibility has been mostly revved by the United States. In 2002, President George W. Bush withdrew the U.S. from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, a vital agreement that had been in effect for 30 years. Negotiated by the Nixon administration and the Soviet Union, the treaty declared that its limits would be a substantial factor in cur...

Makow- Writing for the Internet Be Concise "IndyWatch Feed War"

HenryMakow.com March 26, 2023

Whether its an article or a video people act like theyre paid by the word. If you can say it in five minutes, dont take ten. Writing is for communication, not self-aggrandizement.

The same applies to titles which make or break an article, video or movie. You wont believe what Putin said is a shitty headline. It should be Putin blames CIA for Nord Stream Sabotage. Similarly the Coen brothers great movie Hail Caesar failed to reach its box office potential because it wasnt titled Eddie Mannix after the main character. Hail Caesar tells you nothing.

Communication is not the same as self-expression. If you need to express yourself, keep a diary.

The Key to Good Writing (Updated from June, 2006)

 By Henry Makow PhD

The key to good writing is to consider your audience.

Recently a feminist sent me a long angry diatribe.

I replied: Why would I read this once I figured out it wasnt praise?

People expect you to read their thoughts just because they took the trouble to write them down.

Communication is not the same as self-expression. If you need to express yourself, keep a diary.

In communication, your reader must want to read your work! You must have something original to say.  You must write in an inviting and compelling way.

Put yourself in the readers position. He doesnt have much time or patience. Hes looking for something that will inform, empower or uplift him.

You must pique his interest immediately and convey your message quickly. State your argument in the first paragraph!

The most common mistake is over-writing due to insecurity and the mistaken notion that articles must be long.

Keep it short!  Weed out unnecessary words.

The Internet is a very competitive environment. There is a plethora of good, free material. To compete, you must be as quick, easy and engaging as possible.

George Bernard Shaw said. Have something original to say and say it in the shortest, most candid, straight-forward way possible.

If youre guileless, there is no reason to be nervous.

Ideally, youll be passionate about your information and your sincerity will be felt.

Before obtaining the required permits, Diversified Energy began installing cryptocurrency mining infrastructure on one of its thousands of well pads.

Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus escalation or legitimate response? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Drago Bosnic | March 27, 2023

On March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will start deploying its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Construction of designated storage facilities for the weapons is planned to be completed by July 1. The decision to transfer nuclear weapons to Belarus was made after Minsk issued a formal request, essentially mirroring Washington DCs nuclear sharing agreements with several NATO member states. And while the decision was officially made after the United Kingdom announced it would supply depleted uranium munitions to the Kiev regime, the actual reasoning might have to do with much more sinister plans by the United States.

Namely, Warsaw and Washington DC have been floating the idea of transferring some of the US nuclear weapons stockpiled in Europe to Poland. The move has been mentioned several times in recent years, including in early October last year, when Polish President Andrzej Duda mentioned it in an interview with Gazeta Polska. The US has nuclear sharing agreements with the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Turkey, with approximately 100 (mainly air-launched) tactical nuclear weapons deployed in all five countries. Greece also took part in the program, but discontinued its participation in 2001, although its widely believed Athens still keeps the necessary storage facilities functional.

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko advised against UK plans to deliver depleted uranium munitions to the Kiev regime and warned that Russia would soon supply Belarus with munitions with real uranium. However, Putin himself stated that even outside the context of these events, Belarus still has legitimate security concerns and that Alexander Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] has long raised the question of deploying Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. This clearly implies that threats to Minsk transcend the immediate danger of depleted uranium munitions deliveries to the Neo-Nazi junta in Kiev.

There is nothing unusual in such a decision, as the United States has been doing this for decades. They have long placed their tactical nuclear weapons on the territories of their allies, NATO countries, and in Europe. In six states the Federal Republic of Germany, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Greece well, not in Greece now, but there is still a storage facility, Putin stressed, further adding: [Russia and Belarus] will do the same, without violating our...

We Want to Live in Peace! We Want an Independent Hungary! "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Endre Sim, World BEYOND War, March 27, 2023

A speech at the Szabadsg Square Peace demonstration in Budapest.

The organizers asked me to be the keynote speaker at this demonstration. Thank you for the honor, but I will only speak on the condition that the honorable members of the assembly answer a question. Do you want Hungary to be independent and pursue a sovereign policy in line with our national interests?

Good! So we have a common cause! If you had answered no, I would have had to realize that I had become involved with those who put the American interest before the Hungarian one, consider Zelenskys power more important than the destiny of the Transcarpathian Hungarians, and who want to continue the war in the hope that they can defeat Russia.

Together with you, I also feared for the peace of our country from these people! They are the ones who, if they had to choose between America and Hungary, would be ready to throw away what was left of Trianon as a spoil. I certainly never thought that we would get to this point, and that we should be afraid that our domestic cosmopolitans, arm in arm with our NATO allies, would plunge our country into war for foreign interests! Against these bastards, lets shout at the top of our lungs that we want peace! Just peace, because we are tired of unjust peaces!

We hear a lot these days about how they would like to overthrow the Orbn government through internal and external cooperation and replace it with a puppet government that serves American interests. Some would not even shy away from a coup dtat, and are not even averse to the possibility of foreign military intervention.

They do not like the fact that Orbn does not want to allow our NATO allies to drag Hungary into a war against Russia. They cannot digest that, in its search for a peaceful solution, this government not only enjoys the support of the parliamentary majority, but also the support of the vast majority of our peace-loving compatriots.

You dont want to shed your blood for America and its puppet, Zelensky, do you?!

Do we want to live in peace and on good terms with Russia? With both East and West? Who wants our country to become a parade ground for foreign armies? To become a battlefield again, because the real masters of power deci...

For Israelis, Ethnic Cleansing Palestinians is Fine, But Judicial Reform is a Red Line "IndyWatch Feed World"

The successful mobilization of hundreds of thousands of Israelis to stand up against the Netanyahu government is proof of one thing: Israelis do not want to end the oppression and killing of Palestinian people.

Israeli society has never seen such ongoing massive anti-government protests. So it is clear that had Israelis wanted to, they could have mobilized around lifting the brutal and inhumane blockade Israel has imposed on Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip, or the release of political prisoners or any of the myriad mechanisms Israel uses to oppress and terrorize Palestinians.

However, rather than stand up against any of the sadistic measures their government takes against the Palestinians, Israelis who consider themselves liberal (or even progressive) seem quite content to let the torture of Palestinians go uninterrupted as long as their privileges are not compromised.

The army weighs in

According to a report in The Times of Israel, as well as many other Israeli news outlets, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has warned the Israeli government that the army is on the verge of reducing the scope of operations due to a large number of reservists refusing to report for duty in protest over their efforts to weaken Israels justice system. General Halevi emphasized that the judicial overhaul is leading to deep and dangerous divisions within the military, as growing numbers of reservists warn they will not serve.

In addition to the relatively large numbers of reservists refusing to show up, IDF pilots (the most sacred and admired of all) have also spoken out on the issue. Israeli press reports indicate that Roughly 200 Israeli Air Force reserve pilots reportedly notified their units that they would not be reporting for their weekly flying session.

This announcement has serious implications for the military because, without weekly training sessions, pilots cannot be certified to fly operational missions. The pilots announcement came following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus statement that the government will disregard the calls to halt the reform and plans to move forward with its plan to overhaul the judiciary.

Netanyahus veiled threat

Netanyahus response to the growing numbers of reservists refusing to show up for duty was to say that, The phenomenon of soldiers and reservists refusing to obey orders as a protest move against the judicial overhaul plan could destroy the state.  Furthermore, he added, Surrendering to such a threat is an existential threat to the state of Israel.

Europes Proposed Right-To-Repair Law: a Game Changer, or Business As Usual? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Recently, the European Commission (EC) adopted a new proposal intended to enable and promote the repair of a range of consumer goods, including household devices like vacuum cleaners and washing machines, as well as electronic devices such as smartphones and televisions. Depending on how the European Parliament and Council vote in the next steps, this proposal may shape many details of how devices we regularly interact with work, and how they can be repaired when they no longer do.

As we have seen recently with the Digital Fair Repair Act in New York, which was signed into law last year, the devil is as always in the details. In the case of the New York bill, the original intent of enabling low-level repairs on defective devices got hamstrung by added exceptions and loopholes that essentially meant that entire industries and types of repairs were excluded. Another example of right to repair being essentially gamed involves Apples much-maligned self repair program, that is both limited...

NATO militarizes civilian structures in Europe with 1 billion fund "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ahmed Adel | March 27, 2023

NATO is launching a new investment fund worth 1 billion, which is expected to be officially activated at NATOs annual summit in July. The fund aims to militarize the civil sector by using the knowledge and skills of manufacturers, scientific institutions, and start-ups to develop technology with military and defence applications.

The fund, described by NATO as the worlds first multi-sovereign venture capital fund, will invest 1 billion into developing dual-use (civilian and military) emerging and disruptive technologies over a 15-year time frame. However, it demonstrates that NATO wants to permanently employ the European economy to the Russian border so they can collectively focus on the Ukrainian crisis.

It will also serve as preparation for any future war against Russia, something that is at great risk of eventuating considering Western efforts to deter Moscow from its special military operation in Ukraine have failed.

In the Ukrainian crisis, the material needs of the Ukrainian military are evident, and especially in preparation for any potential scenario of using NATO forces against Russia. This primarily refers to artillery, ammunition, rockets, bombs, air defence systems and drones. Due to these shortages, projects like this are being developed under the auspices of the NATO pact and are now becoming an investment fund for the economies of member states, depending on the ability of those countries to produce equipment needed for combat needs.

NATO approaches this project by effectively purchasing knowledge and engaging civil institutions, but also by opening various civil-military programs and projects. In addition, there are also investments in the so-called information war, which is part of the intelligence-reconnaissance activity, which is very important for modern warfare.

One NATO official told EURACTIV that the Alliance is looking to have a competitive edge over strategic competitors, an obvious reference to Russia.

The Netherlands already announced that it will house the fund. The country also announced that it will facilitate innovative startup companies by helping them find capital.

We expect that housing this fund in the Netherlands will make it easier for innovative Dutch startups to find their way to capital, stimulating solutions for both societal and military problems, the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs said in a statement.

For this reason, the specific technologies invested will include artificial intelligence, big-data processing, biotechnology and human enhancement, novel materials, quantum-enabled technologies as well as propulsion and space. Although the headquarters will likely be in Amsterdam, regional offices will also be established across the Alliance [] given the wide geographic remit of the Fund, according to a NATO...

Updates from the MaaS: new threats delivered through NullMixer "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A technical analysis of NullMixer malware operation revealed Italy and France are the favorite European countries from the attackers perspective.

Executive Summary

  • Our insights into a recent NullMixer malware operation revealed Italy and France are the favorite European countries from the opportunistic attackers perspective.
  • In thirty days, the operation we monitored was capable to establish initial access to over 8 thousand endpoints and steal sensitive data that are now reaching the underground black markets.
  • Most of the victims mount Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise operating systems, including several Datacenter versions of Windows Server. Some of them are also Windows Embedded, indicating the penetration of such malware operation even into IoT environments.
  • The NullMixer package is including new polymorphic loaders by third parties MaaS and PPI service providers in the underground markets, and also pieces of controversial, potentially North-Korean linked PseudoManuscript code.

Introduction

During March 2023, we obtained information and data regarding an ongoing malware operation hitting more than 8.000 targets within a few weeks, with a particular emphasis on North American, Italian, and French targets.

Such was related to a worldwide malware operation known as NullMixer, a controversial and widespread malware delivery maneuver based on SEO poisoning and social engineering technique to lure tech-savvy users, including IT personnel.

The insight from this attack wave revealed the presence of a controversial piece of code in the delivered payloads, among additional loaders related to new MaaS and PPI operators.

Technical Analysis

There are two main key areas we technically analyzed during this investigation: first of all the presence of two unknown loaders entering the MaaS and PPI businesses (CrashedLoader and Koi), along with the presence of a controversial, potentially North-Korean linked piece of malware, and secondly, we analyzed data about current successful infection rates on targeted hosts.

The Originating Malvertising Campaign

According to CTI investigation on the adversary infrastructure, we were able to identify an ongoing campaign luring system administrators to install the malicious code into their machines. In particular, the identified attack wave was designed to trick users to install backdoored, cracked versions of notorious PC maintenance software such as EaseUS Partition Master and Driver Easy Pro, two well-known tools within the IT community.

Lebanon's caretaker prime minister announced on Monday that clocks will move one hour ahead on Wednesday night, reversing an earlier controversial decision to postpone daylight saving time (DST) by a month.

Following a heated debate over the weekend, Najib Mikati said the decision was reached after a "calm discussion".

Mikati surprised many last week when he decided to delay the start of DST by a month so that Muslims could break the fast an hour earlier, at around 18:00 instead of 19:00, the time the sun sets.

Many businesses were caught unprepared by the decision and decided not to follow the government and moved their time forward by an hour, including a number of Christian churches.

The Israeli army continued to impose closures around Huwwara in the northern occupied West Bank on Monday in what Palestinians described as collective punishment.

Roads in and out of Nablus and Huwwara were blocked and shops in the flashpoint town were ordered to close until further notice.

The closures were imposed late on Saturday after a drive-by shooting by Palestinians wounded two Israeli soldiers.

'When the soldiers came to close our shops, they didn't allow us to save the goods or even cover them, otherwise they would break the glass and shoot it'

- Mazen al-Aker, sweet shop owner

Business owners say they have been hit the hardest.

"When the soldiers came to close our shops, they didn't allow us to save the goods or even cover them, otherwise they would break the glass and shoot it," Mazen al-Aker, a sweetshop owner, told Middle East Eye.

The closures have made this Ramadan the worst the town has seen in years, according to al-Aker.

Several shop owners on Sunday tried to reopen for business in defiance of the Israeli measures but were dispersed by the army using tear gas and stun grenades.

Videos published on local media showed dozens of Palestinians heading to Huwwara stuck in long queues at Israeli checkpoints in the evening, forcing many to break their Ramadan fast in their vehicles.

Meanwhile, Israeli settlers stormed the town on Sunday in protests against Palestinian shootings.

Supplying Ukraine with Depleted Uranium Shells "IndyWatch Feed War"

Should they be taking them? Ukraine is desperate for any bit of warring materiel its armed forces can lay their hands on, but depleted uranium shells would surely not be a model example of use. And yet, the UK, in an act of killing with kindness, is happy to fork them out to aid the cause against the Russians, despite the scandals, the alleged illnesses, and environmental harms.

An outline of the measure was provided by Minister of state for defence Baroness Annabel Goldies written answer to a question posed by Lord Hylton: Alongside our granting of a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, we will be providing ammunition including armour piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium. Such rounds are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armoured vehicles.

The response from the Kremlin was swift. If all this happens, warned Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia will have to respond accordingly, given that the West collectively is already beginning to use weapons with a nuclear component. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu also foresaw nuclear collision.

The statement from Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian lower house, shifted the focus from potential nuclear catastrophe to the field of medical consequences, reminding his fellow members that the use of such ammunition by the US in former Yugoslavia and Iraq had led to radioactive contamination and a sharp rise in oncological cases.

News networks were left trying to convey a picture to the public, much of it skimpy on the perilous consequences arising from using such munitions. The BBCs characteristic language of understatement notes that such uranium, stripped of much of its radioactive content, makes weapons more powerful, but it is feared those weapons could be a threat to people in areas where they are used.

Sky News had its own benign interpretation of the dangers, suggesting that DU, in emitting alpha particles, did not have enough energy to go through skin, so exposure to the outside of the body is not considered a serious hazard. An admission as to the dangers had to follow. It can be a serious health hazard, however, if it is swallowed or inhaled.

Performance Evaluation of C, Julia, Kokkos and Python/Numba in Exascale High Performance Computing "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Julia and Kokkos perform comparably with C/OpenMP on CPUs, while Julia implementations are competitive with CUDA and HIP on GPUs:

High-level dynamic languages such as Python, Julia, and R have been at the forefront of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), data analysis, and interactive computing workflows in the last decade. Traditional high-performance computing (HPC) frameworks that power the underlying low-level computations for performance and scalability are written in compiled languages: C, C++, and Fortran.

[...] We analyze single node scalability on two systems hosted at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF)1Wombat, which uses Arm Ampere Neoverse CPUs and 2 NVIDIA A100 GPUs, and Crusher, which is equipped with AMD EPYC 7A53 CPUs and 8 MI250X GPUs and serves as a test bed for Frontier, the first exascale system on the TOP500 list.

[...] We run hand-rolled general matrix multiplication (GEMM) code for dense matrices using Julia, Python/Numba and Kokkos implementations and compare the performance with C for multithreaded CPU (OpenMP) and single GPU (CUDA/HIP) systems. GEMM is an important kernel in the Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) used across several deep learning AI frameworks, for which modern GPU architectures have been heavily optimized via tensor cores.

[...] For CPUs, Julia performance was comparable to C/OpenMP combined with LLVM-based ArmClang and AMDClang vendor compilers. For the AMD GPUs, Julia AMDGPU.jl performance was comparable to HIP. Nevertheless, there is still a performance gap on NVIDIA A100 GPUs for single-precision floating point cases.

[...] We observe that Python/Numba implementations still lack the support needed to reach comparable CPU and GPU performance on these systems, and AMD GPU support is deprecated.

Egyptian dissidents abroad have told Middle East Eye they are being denied the right to renew their passports and identity documents as a means of pressuring them to return home to Egypt.

In 2017, the well-known Egyptian journalist Hosam Yahia, then based in Qatar, tried to renew his passport a year before it expired. The Egyptian embassy in Doha gave him a one-year renewal instead of the standard seven years, which surprised him.

When Yahia asked for a reason, embassy staff said he was due for conscription, despite having submitted the necessary documents proving his exemption. They promised him that the next time he renewed his passport, it would be for seven years.

In the following months, a local Egyptian media campaign was launched against the Qatari state-backed Al Jazeera channel and Egyptians who work there, including Yahia.

Relations between Egypt and Qatar had deteriorated after the Egyptian military overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The Case for International Humanitarian Intervention in Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

While Ukraine has exceeded the initial expectations of many war experts and seems likely to remain on the front foot against the Russian forces that have invaded the country, with this optimism to a large extent attributable to the continued support it has been receiving from the West and the high morale displayed by the Ukrainian troops, the next few months of the war will likely be especially difficult and may be characterized by protracted standoffs rather than opportunities for major counteroffensives for the Ukrainians. Given these realities on the ground, with former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul characterizing a stalemate on the battlefield as essentially synonymous with continued death and destruction, civilians in many areas of Ukraine who are located quite far from the major theatres of the conflict (such as those based in populated areas in central and western Ukraine) remain vulnerable to missile and drone strikes that are often indiscriminately launched by Russia.

The possibility of a further deterioration in the situation on the ground for Ukrainian non-combatants, especially due to critical civilian infrastructure remaining a target for Russian attacks, coupled with the Western countries increased willingness to call the Putin administrations bluffs with regard to the regimes nuclear threats, may be regarded as a signal that the time has arrived to revisit a Polish proposal dating back to the early phases of the war, which advocated for the deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

Polands deputy Prime Minister Jarosaw Kaczyski was the first one to officially suggest such an idea when the top politicians of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia traveled to Kyiv in March 2022 in order to meet with top Ukrainian politicians. At the time the details regarding the strategic planning were lacking, but it was clear that the intention was to have a peacekeeping mission under the auspices of NATO or another international structure that was to operate in the Ukrainian territories, which were not occupied by Russia, potentially securing safe havens for civilians. The peacekeepers were to have the backing of armed forces, though with a mandate that...

Its not just a planet of straight white men anymore "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Before fringe groups and weird haters hide behind the label of science, they really ought to more aware of what many scientists are actually saying, because theyre far more woke than you know. For instance, there is a strong movement within ecology and evolutionary biology to consciously revisit the history and assumptions of the discipline, with the EEB Language Project working to make the terminology more inclusive and recognize the biases in our history. This is a good thing, although some of the more senior members of the field will no doubt squawk about it. Too bad.

The group has just published a paper, Championing inclusive terminology in ecology and evolution that Im filing away to use in the ecological developmental biology course Ill be teaching in spring of 2024.

In recent years, events such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and waves of anti-Black violence have highlighted the need for leaders in EEB to adopt inclusive and equitable practices in research, collaboration, teaching, and mentoring. As we plan for a more inclusive future, we must also grapple with the exclusionary history of EEB. Much of Western science is rooted in colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy, and these power structures continue to permeate our scientific culture. Here, we discuss one crucial way to address this history and make EEB more inclusive for marginalized communities: our choice of scientific terminology.

We provide background on how terminology influences inclusion in EEB, describe existing community-based initiatives and our new grassroots effort to champion inclusive language in EEB, and offer guiding questions and considerations for readers committed to using inclusive scientific terminology. This effort is particularly important for redressing the ongoing marginalization of many groups in EEB, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities; and disabled communities; among others. This work is motivated by the collective experiences, perspectives, and knowledges of our author group. Mitigating the institutional problems in EEB will take significant effort and resources, and examining the role of language in these problems must go beyond attention to scientific terms. It must also include consideration of how language is used among scientists more broadly, and how English is often treated as the dominant language for scientific work. Nevertheless, we propose that inclusion can be fostered by a collective commitment to be more conscientious and intentional about the scientific terminology we use when teaching, mentoring, collaborating, and conducting...

Debate on Assange urgently needed - an Open Letter to Assange Parliamentary Support Group "IndyWatch Feed World"

AndrewWilkieIncluded below, is an example of the letters I sent late in the evening of Monday 27 March to each of the 40 members of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Support Group. I point out that, in spite of its size, the efforts of this group so far appear to have made little difference towards making the Albanese government act to end the UK's illegal imprisonment of Assange or even to just hold this government to account for its failure to do so. To make a difference, the Support Group needs to do a lot more than it previously has - from time to time, making statements, none of which have ever even been responded to by this government, or presenting petitions . The Group needs to find means to have Julian Assange properly debated on the floor of Parliament. One means to do so is to, once more, try to put to Parliament the foreshadowed motion that Andrew Wilkie tried unsuccessfully to put on 2 December 2021.

Example of one the e-mails I have sent to the each of the 40 members of the Assange Parliamentary Support Group

Dear Ms. Zali Stegall,

I write to you because you are listed as a member of the (Assange Parliamentary Support Group). As a member of that group, you are surely aware that the imprisonment of Julian Assange, who has broken no law, is in violation of UK law, Australian law, and the First Amendment of the United States Constitution which guarantees the right to free speech.

I urge you, during this sitting week, which commenced yesterday, Monday 27 March, to use your voice in Parliament in a way that I believe would do far more to lift the cause of freeing Julian Assange than what has occurred in Parliament since the start of the 2021 sitting year.[1] If the Assange Parliamentary Support Group continues to restrict itself only to making statements, mentioning of Assange in passing whilst raising other issues, presenting petitions and putting questions in Question Time (3 times since February 2021), then I don't see how this can either persuade the government to use the power vested in it as a sovereign government to free Assange, or to effectively hold this government to account should it continue to fail to do so.

I am asking you to call for a Suspension of Standing Orders in order to, once more, try to have the plight of Julian Assange debated on the floor of Parliament, and, if that motion is again voted down, to call for a Division this time. Specifically, I am asking that you reput the foreshadowed motion...

The History of CB Radios: From the 1970s Craze to Todays Modern Uses "IndyWatch Feed World"

Citizens Band (CB) radios were first introduced in the United States in the 1940s and were primarily used by businesses and truckers for communication purposes. However, it was not until the 1970s that CB radios became a cultural phenomenon and an important part of popular culture. From the 1970s craze to todays modern uses, CB radios have come a long way.

Source: longisland70skid.com

1970s Craze

The 1970s marked the height of the CB radio craze, with millions of people using the radios to communicate with each other. CB radios were popular because they provided a way for people to communicate with others who were not within shouting distance. CB radios were also relatively inexpensive and easy to use, making them accessible to people from all walks of life.

During the 1970s, CB radios were used for a variety of purposes, including communication between truckers on the road and between individuals in their cars. CB radios were also used by hobbyists who enjoyed talking to other radio enthusiasts around the country. In addition, CB radios were often used by emergency responders and law enforcement officials as a way to communicate during emergencies and disasters.

During the height of popularity in the 1970s, demand for these radios skyrocketed. People all over the country wanted to get their hands on a CB radio so they could communicate with others on the airwaves. This led to the opening of many CB shops that specialized in selling and repairing these radios. The popularity during this time was truly remarkable, and it solidified their place in popular culture for years to come.

On Sunday evening, hundreds of thousands of Israelis staged mass protests up and down the country after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired the Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

China-linked Earth Preta cyberespionage group has been observed adopting new techniques to bypass security solutions.

Trend Micro researchers reported that the China-linked Earth Preta group (aka Mustang Panda) is actively changing its tools, tactics, and procedures (TTPs) to bypass security solutions.

Earth Preta, also known as RedDelta or Bronze President, has been active since at least 2012, it targeted American and European entities such as government organizations, think tanks, NGOs, and even Catholic organizations at the Vatican. Past campaigns were focused on Asian countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Tibet, and Myanmar.

In recent campaigns, threat actors used European Union reports on the conflict in Ukraine and Ukrainian government reports as lures. Upon opening the reports, the infection process starts leading to the deployment of malware on the victims system.

In a recent campaign analyzed by Trend Micro, the threat actors used spear-phishing emails and Google Drive links as attack vectors.

A deep investigation into the campaign revealed several undisclosed malware and interesting data exfiltration tools used by the group.

The researchers categorized the infection chain into six stages: arrival vectors, discovery, privilege escalation, lateral movement, command and control (C&C) and exfiltration, respectively.

Deforestation drives fire risk in Borneo amid a warming climate, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The dry season of 2015 was a devastating one for Indonesia, with around 100,000 fires engulfing thousands of hectares of tropical rainforests and carbon-rich peatlands on the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and New Guinea. The infernos, strengthened by dry weather caused by El Nio, raged for months, in the process emitting more carbon dioxide than a years worth of U.S. economic activity. The haze spread so far it threatened public health not just in Indonesia, but also in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, leading an Indonesian government agency to label the fires a crime against humanity. While the 2015 fires were particularly severe, reports of such tropical forest fires in Indonesia, especially Borneo, have hit headlines almost every year for decades. A recent study predicts that as climate change worsens and deforestation intensifies in the region, the risk of forest fires will only continue to increase. The study, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, calculated the combined effect of climate change and deforestation on fire risk in Borneo, and found that while high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere increase fire risk, deforestation, which causes the dry conditions that fuel the fires, significantly contributes to it. The broader conversation about Afrobeats "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Is Afrobeats more directly derivative of continental currents than diasporic contexts?

alt
Photo by Humphrey Muleba on Unsplash.

Over the last decade musical acts grouped under the Afrobeats banner have built a distinctive musical movement of remarkable reach. With artists from Ghana and Nigeria enjoying unprecedented popularity on the world stage, Afrobeats brims with significance as a watershed for Africas place in global pop, with the likes of Burna Boy in the same league as Bad Bunny. For some, Afrobeats feels like a homecoming, a new platform for Africans in the modern musical mainstream. As an industrial force, it is quickly becoming the envy of more established brands like Jamaican dancehall. Christian Adofos book, A Quick Ting on Afrobeats (Jacaranda 2022), attempts to narrate this development, mixing a personal archive of listening and dancing in African communities with a journalistic account of particular players in the Afrobeats story. While it sometimes falters in focus and falls prey to boosterism, the book bears vivid witness to the importance of Afrobeats for a generation of listeners, especially for Africans in diaspora.

At base, the story of Afrobeats, and the personal context that Adofo weaves into the book, is about the power of representation: about seeing and hearing African artists being themselves in the world, and therefore feeling seen and heard too. For the children of African migrants who are fluent in their mother tongue, Adofo argues, Afrobeats presents a powerful space. In this telling, however, the inspiring pan-African character of Afrobeats threatens to eclipse the musics Afro-diasporic history. Adofo doesnt exactly neglect the importance of the UK as a foundational site for Afrobeats or the ways it has been shaped by Afro-Caribbean and broader diasporic currents. Indeed, he grounds the book in his own experience as an African living in the UK to underscore the significance of Afrobeats to the children of African migrants there, who no longer feel the need to pretend to be West Indian, as the author recounts.

But the books substantial attention to earlier examples of African popular musi...

Interaction of the high frequency waves in the vicinity of the ionospheric window "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

It is well-known that an ordinary high frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave radiated into the ionosphere at the Spitze angle is totally transformed at the reflection height (z0) into the Z-mode. This mode, in turn, penetrates deeper into the ionosphere and it is reflected at some height (zref) usually significantly higher than the O-mode reflection height. This result is reconsidered in the present paper. It is argued that the wave appearing as a continuation of the propagating upward quasi-electrostatic wave changes the direction of motion along the vertical axis slightly above z0 and takes the form of the down-going wave. This wave is excited in the vicinity of the height z0 due to the phase resonance with the up-going O-mode wave which transforms into the Z-mode propagating upward. Thus, the ionospheric window is not totally transparent for the O-mode radiated at the Spitze angle. The up-going O-mode wave loses some part of its energy due to excitation of the down-going EM wave. This wave, in turn, propagates to the ground as the O-mode wave.

Nonlinear evolution of the Weibel instability with relativistic laser pulses "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The Weibel instability is investigated using relativistic intense short laser pulses. A relativistic short laser pulse can generate a sub-relativistic high-density collisionless plasma. By irradiating double parallel planar targets with two relativistic laser pulses, sub-relativistic collisionless counterstreaming plasmas are created. Since the growth rate of the Weibel instability is proportional to the plasma density and velocity, the spatial and temporal scales of the Weibel instability can be much smaller than that from nanosecond large laser facilities. Recent theoretical and numerical studies have revealed that astrophysical collisionless shocks in sub-relativistic regimes in the absence and presence of an ambient magnetic field play essential roles in cosmic ray acceleration. With experimental verification in mind, we discuss the possible experimental models on the Weibel instability with intense short laser pulses. In order to show the experimental feasibility, we perform 2D particle-in-cell simulations in the absence of an external magnetic field as the first step and discuss the optimum conditions to realize the nonlinear evolutions of the Weibel instability in laboratories.

How Many People Will Be Left in Chasiv Yar? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

CHASIV YAR, Ukraine Neighbors in Chasiv Yar chatted Friday afternoon to the accompaniment of machine gun fire and booming artillery.

We live here under fire, said one of the residents, Luba.

On the outskirts of town, the sound of battle was fierce. In recent weeks, Russian military forces have drawn closer to Chasiv Yar as they continue to encircle Bakhmut, a neighboring town a few miles east that has been the epicenter of fighting for months.

Oleksandr Musiienko, head of the Kyiv-based think tank Center for Military and Legal Studies, predicted during a phone interview on Saturday that the Russian advances are the culmination of an offensive that is losing momentum due to heavy Russian military losses. Still, the gains around Bakhmut have placed Chasiv Yar and other nearby towns and cities under heavier fire.

As fighting raged on the outskirts of Chasiv Yar on Friday afternoon, Luba talked with her neighbor Oleksiy.

Its getting on our nerves, of course, very much, Oleksiy said about the noise.

Especially in the night, Luba added. A lot of attacks.

Down the road, much of Chasiv Yar was damaged and destroyed. Mud and debris covered pothole-lined roads, and homes and residential buildings sat damaged and vacant or occupied by Ukrainian troops.

Oleksiy and Luba said they have lived without electricity for a month, and without running water and gas for the last six weeks. With shops closed, both said they are largely reliant on humanitarian aid from the local government and nongovernmental organizations for survival.

Humanitarian help helps a lot, said Oleksiy. We are thankful for that, that we are not forgotten.

MS-DOS Client Brings ChatGPT to the IBM PC "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A ChatGPT client running on an IBM Portable PC

AI-powered chatbots are clearly the future of computing, and its only a matter of time before youll see them appear on every internet-connected gadget. If you thought you were safe from this by sticking to an ancient MS-DOS PC though, think again: [Yeo Kheng Meng] has recently written a ChatGPT client that runs on DOS.

[Yeo Kheng Meng] didnt cheat by simply running MS-DOS on a modern PC, either: he tested the client on a real 1984 vintage IBM 5155 Portable PC. This semi-portable PC/XT model sports a 4.77 MHz 8088 CPU, 640 kB of RAM and a CGA video card with a built-in monochrome monitor. An NE2000 ISA network card, running in 8-bit mode, enables the Portable to connect to the internet.

Running the client couldnt be simpler: just run doschgpt.exe and type in your question. [Yeo Kheng Meng] developed this program using the Open Watcom C/C++ compiler, which was the compiler of choice for most DOS game developers back in the day. Networking support was provided by an era-appropriate packet driver together with MTCP, a TCP/IP stac...

Is a Drunk Pedestrian Killed by a Driver Something To Care About? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Unsplash/Behzad Ghaffarian.)

A mother took her daughter and niece to the library where they stayed until closing time. When they left, it was raininga chilly December night. Their car was parked in the lot directly across the street. With two young kids in tow, this mother chose the most direct path from the front door to the the closest signalized crossing. One of the cars they tried to dodge when crossing the street was driven by a drunk driver. The driver struck the three of them and the womans daughter was killed.

In Confessions of a Recovering Engineer, I spend thirteen chapters explaining why this tragedy was not the fault of the mother. Emotionally, thats not a difficult case to make, especially to anyone with a reasonable amount of empathy. She lost a childperhaps the most painful thing any mother can endureand Ive found that most people are reluctant to heap blame on such a person. It was not her fault, and most of my readers have been willing to accept my technical evaluation in support of that diagnosis.

I made another, related, argument in Chapter 3 (Whose Mistakes Do We Forgive?) of Confessions that was less universally embraced. I argued that the intoxicated woman driving the car was also not to blame. It was not her fault.

That opinion was not shared by the police who arrived at the scene. Police are trained to evaluate crashes and identify their causes. Their reports include check boxes and prompts to conduct the analysis. Was the driver speeding? Were they intoxicated? Were they wearing a seat belt? Were they distracted by a cell phone or device? Check all that apply.

Barred From US Tech, Huawei Builds EDA Platform of its Own "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Beijing's Made in China drive fueled by Washington's export crackdowns:

Huawei has reportedly completed work on electronic design automation (EDA) tools for laying out and making chips down to 14nm process nodes.

Chinese media said the platform is one of 78 being developed by the telecoms equipment giant to replace American and European chip design toolkits that have become subject to export controls by the US and others.

EDA is an umbrella term for software, hardware, and services essential to the planning, design, and production of chips. While integrated circuits were largely designed by hand decades ago, chips became so complex that computer-aided design and automation was unavoidable, generally speaking.

Huawei's EDA platform was reportedly revealed by rotating Chairman Xu Zhijun during a meeting in February, and later confirmed by media in China. The Register reached out to Huawei's PR team for comment; we'll let you know if we hear anything back.

Today, the EDA market is largely controlled by three companies: California-based Synopsys and Cadence, as well as Germany's Siemens. According to the industry watchers at TrendForce, these three companies account for roughly 75 percent of the EDA market. And this poses a problem for Chinese chipmakers and foundries, which have steadily found themselves cut off from these tools.

Synopsys and Cadence's EDA tech is already subject to several of these export controls, which were stiffened by the US Commerce Department last summer to include state-of-the-art gate-all-around (GAA) transistors.

After years of tight top down control SNP members finally get their say over the partys future "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

This afternoon SNP members will finally decide who they want to succeed the long duopoly shared over time between Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeons dominance over Scottish politics. Their first leadership election in 20 years has been chaotic.

The Economist this week writes on the current chaos within the SNP after sixteen years in government. Its analysis rests on the  work of Professor Timur Kuran, a Turkish-American political scientist, who coined the phrase preference falsification.

Which, when it is at home, is

the tendency of people to pretend to be content with the status quo when there is no viable opposition, only to air their grievances at the first flicker of change.

The piece continues:

The extent of the partys disarray is stunning. The scale of preference falsification during the leadership of Nicola Sturgeon is now on full display; a party whose main strength seemed to be iron discipline is letting rip.

Ms Sturgeon ran a highly centralised operation with Peter Murrell, her husband and long the SNPs CEO. MPs and members resented this centralisation, but tolerated it as a precondition for electoral success and as a useful contrast with more chaotic opponents.

Murrell resigned on March 18th along with head of media Murray Foote over accusations about lying re the number of SNP members (it still has the biggest membership in Scotland by some considerable distance). But as the piece notes:

The careful control Ms Sturgeon exerted over the SNPs independence strategy has been replaced by confusion and more radical talk from the candidates to succeed her.

Thats because the SNP is a massive coalition that runs from the far left to the far right. After the UK Supreme Court blocked the legal route to a second referendum by ruling the power to call one lay with Westminster. IndyRef2 was dead for the foreseeable.

As a result

Without a clear path to independence, the snp is discovering it agrees on little else. There are wildly different views on tax incentives and the size of the state. Mr Yousaf says he is proud of the partys record in government; Ms Forbes says more of the same would be an acceptance of mediocrity.

Ms Sturgeon wrapped nationalism up with progressive causes such as gender self-identification; Ms Forbes, an evangelical Christian, disagrees with same-sex marriage, abortion and bringing up children outside marriage. No preference is being falsified these days.

No government has the right to decide on the truth of scientific principles.

A Rare Statue of Buddha Fails to Sell at Auction as Questions Swirl Around a Renowned Art Collection "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The statue of Buddha that was up for sale at Christies auction house was, according to art experts, an early test: Would recent controversy around objects once owned by two prominent Chicago collectors hinder its sale and send a signal about how the art market views the renowned collection?

The answer came quickly. The 7 1/4-inch copper-alloy Buddha from 9th-century Nepal, which had been on loan to the Art Institute of Chicago until last year, failed to sell last week, a Christies spokesperson said.

It never received a bid in the estimated price range of $60,000 to $80,000.

Nobody wants to buy trouble, said Erin Thompson, an associate professor of art crime at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York who has advocated for repatriation of Nepali artifacts. Why would you buy someone elses stolen cultural property?

Although the Christies auction was a single sale of a single object, art experts said it was telling nonetheless. The rare Buddha had been in the collection of James and Marilynn Alsdorf, whose massive art holdings focused on pieces from Nepal and other parts of South and Southeast Asia.

The Christies spokesperson said 63% of the auctions 124 lots found buyers.

The Alsdorfs obtained the Buddha at a time when protocols around collecting were lax, and it was sold to them by a New York dealer who at the end of his career acknowledged engaging in questionable practices. Ethical standards for acquiring antiquities became more strict after a 1970 UNESCO convention prohibited the import of looted cultural property.

The Buddha was on loan to the Art Institute beginning in the late 1990s and was last on display in 2018 at the museum, which has galleries dedicated to the Alsdorfs vast Asian collection. Marilynn Alsdorf, who died in 2019, left much of the collection to the museum. James Alsdorf, who once led the museums board of trustees, died in 1990.

Twitter Hunts Down Github User Who Leaked Companys Source Code "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

pirate twitterOn February 21, 2023, Twitter chief Elon Musk published a tweet suggesting that Twitters algorithm would be made open source before the end of that month.

Before he took ownership of Twitter, Musk said that having the code out in the open would be a smart move, but the end of February came and went, without any code appearing in public.

On March 17, Musk raised the topic once again. Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31st, he tweeted. With the clock ticking on that event, someone with apparently similar plans but a more urgent publishing schedule, has taken Twitter by surprise.

FreeSpeechEnthusiast Presents: PublicSpace

On March 24, Twitter sent a DMCA takedown notice to GitHub targeting a repo named PublicSpace. The repo was created by a GitHub user called FreeSpeechEnthusiast, but with no description, nothing stood out as particularly interesting or out of the ordinary.

twitter-github-publicspace3

Logs obtained by TorrentFreak suggest that the allegedly infringing content appeared on the PublicSpace repo early Friday morning, around 02:25. When GitHub received the initial DMCA notice isnt clear, but some interaction between Twitter and GitHub appears to have taken place before 10:15.

At 17:12 Friday afternoon, GitHub removed the repo and the code. Just one minute later, GitHub advised Twitter that the content was gone. That was a pretty swift removal but it appears Twitter was in a real hurry.

Proprietary Source Code For Twitters Platform

While the repo itself appeared without fanfare, Twitters DMCA notice is clear on why it should be taken down.

In response to GitHubs request to identify the infringed content, Twitter revealed that it was Proprietary source code for Twitters platform and internal tools.

Whys the West Paranoid is About the Putin-Xi Summit? "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Salman Rafi Sheikh New Eastern Outlook 26.03.2023

The recently concluded summit consolidated Russias and Chinas joint bid to challenge the US-dominated global system as well as concerted US efforts to undermine, using any means, emerging global powers. That the push to challenge this system is gaining momentum, evident from the support that both Russia and China continue to receive from the non-Western world, has left the West especially, the US paranoid about the future of the system they created after the Second World War. This growing paranoia is at the heart of an arrest warrant that the International Criminal Court issued last week against Putin. Ridiculous as this may sound, such actions only reveal the Wests inner anxieties about the failure of their combined efforts to defeat Russia in Ukraine.

On the contrary, even as reports in the mainstream US media show, assembling enough military strength from within NATO countries for Ukraine against Russia has become an extremely difficult task, as more and more NATO countries are becoming worried about their own ammunition stockpiles. In addition to this, as reports in the US media show, there are growing differences between Washington and Kyiv as well with regard to the conduct of the war. How will Russia be defeated in such a case? For many Western powers especially, the US and its old allies (the UK) this is nothing short of a nightmare.

This nightmare is exacerbated by the Russia-China alliance. China, as it stands, has more manufacturing capacity today than the US-Europe combined. And, it is strong enough a military power to confront any western power in the Pacific or beyond. What can the West do to break this alliance? There is virtually no way the West can do any damage to this alliance; hence, the growing paranoia.

In fact, the Wests combined failure to defeat Russia has given a bit more confidence to the Russia-China alliance to pursue its politics of creating a multipolar world. For decades, the combined West projected its supposed superiority over the non-West. Chinas rapid emergence as a global power and Russias success against the combined strength of NATO has unambiguously proven this sense of superiority to be false. Xi, in an article he......

Bus Stop Bloom Filter "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Imagine youre sitting on a nice bench, the sun shines warmly, and a bus pulls up. Youre headed to Stendal from Osnabrck, how can you tell if you should get on that bus? [Julian Vanecek] is trying to turn that from an O(n) problem to an O(1) one with a bloom filter right at the bus stop.

In [Julians] sample code, each stop is a 3-bit number that can be encoded into a 192-bit array. Your ticket is just that 3-bit number encoded, so you can look at the graphic on the side of the incoming bus, match it against your ticket, and hop on. Gone are the days of waiting for the little LED screen to cycle through all the stops, waiting for yours to come up. Your ticket should have just a few boxes filled in so it is relatively quick to search against the buss graphic.

Of course, there is a potential for a false positive rate. [Julian] points out that this can be tuned to prevent errors and has achieved a < 0.5% false positive rate using the Deutsche Bahn bus system. The code is written in Python and available on GitHub. Perhaps buses could have a large flip-dop display on the si...

Blue Origin Pins Last Summer's NS-23 Rocket Failure on a Faulty Engine Nozzle "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The uncrewed capsule will fly again:

Blue Origin now has an explanation for the booster failure that cut a New Shepard flight short last September. Jeff Bezos' company has determined that a "thermo-structural failure" in the NS-23 rocket's engine nozzle was to blame. Operational temperatures for the nozzle climbed higher than expected following cooling system design changes, creating fatigue that misaligned the thrust and activated the crew capsule's escape system.

Engineers are already taking "corrective actions" that include redesigning the combustion chamber and operating conditions. Blue Origin has also tweaked the nozzle design to improve its structural integrity. The capsule wasn't damaged and will fly again, Blue Origin says.

The company says it hopes to resume flights "soon," but hasn't provided an exact date. It intends to restart operations by re-flying the research payload from the aborted mission. The Federal Aviation Administration has to accept the incident findings before Blue Origin can move forward.

There's plenty of pressure on Blue Origin to address the issues. The company recently obtained a NASA contract to fly a science mission to Mars using its yet-to-launch New Glenn rocket, and has been pushing for a lunar lander agreement. The sooner Blue Origin can prove that its rocketry is trustworthy, the sooner it can secure customers that include governments and space tourists.

TANTURA (2022) "IndyWatch Feed War"

Video Link

By Syed Zafar Mehdi | Press TV | March 25, 2023

The Butcher of Tantura, who often bragged about murdering unarmed Palestinians after invading their small hamlet on the Mediterranean coast in the summer of 1948, is dead. He was 96.

Amitzur Cohen was groomed as part of the Zionist terrorist group Lehi and went on to carry out some of the most horrendous crimes against humanity, including the Tantura massacre.

After the illegitimate Zionist entity came into existence in May 1948 as part of the British project to colonize Palestine, hundreds of Palestinian villages and cities were ethnically cleansed and destroyed.

On the intervening night of May 22-23, the Palestinian coastal village of Tantura with a population of around 1,500 was among the last to be ambushed and occupied by the Israeli armys Alexandroni Brigade, leaving behind a trail of death and destruction.

In his book The birth of the Palestinian refugee problem, historian Benny Morris writes that the occupying regime forces took the decision to expel or subdue native Palestinians in Tantura.

A communique issued by the Israeli military a day after the Tantura massacre brazenly boasted that hundreds of Arabs and a large quantity of booty fell into our hands.

As per activists and researchers, more than 200 Palestinians were killed and buried in a mass grave measuring 115 x 13 feet following the carnage carried out by the Zionist terrorist group.

Last year, Israeli media reported the discovery of a mass grave in the village, which prompted calls from Palestinian groups for an international commission to probe the series of massacres that followed the forcible expulsion of at least 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland, known popularly as the Nakba, or catastrophe.

Midazolam Is Literally Used For Lethal Injection

States can still use the sedative drug midazolam in lethal injections, according to todays Supreme Court decision. But how exactly does the drug work, and why do some say that its unreliable?

Live Science, How Does Execution Drug Midazolam Work?

This by itself would be damning. But this is just the beginning.

Midazolam Dosage Exceeds That Used In Death Penalty

In Arizona, the dosage for execution using midazolam is 50mg.

The Arizona execution protocol explicitly states that a prisoner will be executed using 50mg of hydromorphone and 50mg of midazolam

Oxford rower rushed to hospital after collapsing at the end of Boat Race vs Cambridge "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sam Smith The Express March 27, 2023

Oxford rower Felix Drinkall was rushed to hospital after collapsing towards the end of the 2023 Boat Race. Drinkall was seen clearly in distress before collapsing during the event on the River Thames.

The rower reportedly collapsed in his boat and his team rowed to the side of the river so their colleague could receive urgent medical attention. It has been confirmed that Drinkall was conscious after the race.

Team-mate Tossilo von Meuller confirmed Drinkall was awake as he was taken away by paramedics. The race continued to its end, with Cambridge winning the prestigious race.

Drinkall could be seen looking exhausted and barely able to hold his oar before dropping to the ground. It was clear that he needed medical attention.

Von Meuller had to be reassured on the BBCs live coverage that his friend was okay. Interview by presenter Sue Barker, the Oxford president said: I dont know how Felix is. He wasnt great in the boat. I hope he is alright.

It is not the result we wanted to come out with. It is a battle between two sides so one will lose

Barker interjected to say: We are hearing that Felix is recovering, we will give you an update when we know it.

Oxford had fallen behind Cambridge in the race and struggled to chase their rivals. It ended with Cambridge leaping into a six-second lead.

Cambridges celebrations were understandably subdued. Spectators were clearly concerned about the condition of Drinkall as he was led away on a stretcher by paramedics.

Ollie Boyne, the mens president of the Cambridge Boat Club, was thrilled as he responded to his teams triumph. It has been an incredible performance by the crews, it is a great sign for the club, he said.

The conditions were really difficult but that was down to the tide and that it is what makes the race so special. It means everything to the guys and the team as a whole after sixth months of day in, day out work.
