So weit so lustig. Aber dann:

After The Washington Post flagged them, Amazon and Alibaba said they removed the listings, citing safety issues and violations of their policies.
Whoa, wenn Alibaba Dinge aus dem Sortiment nimmt, dann mssen da wirklich Menschen in signifikanter Menge dran verstorben sein.

Uber, DoorDash and Grubhub Sue New York City Over $18 Minimum-wage Law "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

They're requesting a temporary injunction blocking the law:

Uber, DoorDash and Grubhub are suing for an injunction to stop New York City's new $18 minimum wage law for food delivery app workers, The Washington Post has reported. The app delivery platforms are asking for a temporary restraining order against the new rules, set to be implemented on July 12th. "We will not stand by and let the harmful impacts of this earnings standard on New York City customers, merchants, and the delivery workers it was intended to support go unchecked," a DoorDash spokesperson told CNN.

The Worker's Justice Project that backed the survey decried the new lawsuit. "This latest legal maneuver to prop up their business model comes at the expense of workers who can barely survive in a city facing a massive affordability crisis," director Ligia Guallpa told the Post.

New York became the first US city to mandate a minimum wage for food delivery workers, ordering platforms to pay workers $17.96 per hour, plus tips, by July 12th. The minimum wage in the city is $15 per hour, but the extra amount accounts for the fact that delivery workers are usually paid as contractors, so have higher taxes and must pay work-related expenses out of pocket. According to an estimate from the DCWP (NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection), NYC has more than 60,000 food delivery workers who earn an average of $7.09 per hour.

[...] App services like Uber have fought for years against regulations against the "gig worker" economy. Earlier this year, a court ruled that Uber and Lyft could keep treating drivers as contractors, rather than reclassifying them as salaried employees.

Synthetic Evolution: Genetically Minimal Artificial Cells Prove Life Finds a Way "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Scientists discovered that a synthetic cell with a reduced genome could evolve as quickly as a normal cell. Despite losing 45% of its original genes, the cell adapted and demonstrated resilience in a laboratory experiment lasting 300 days, effectively showcasing that evolution occurs even under perceived limitations.

Listen, if theres one thing the history of evolution has taught us is that life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, and it crashes through barriers painfully, maybe even dangerously, but ife finds a way, said Ian Malcolm, Jeff Goldblums character in Jurassic.

The Jurassic period is a geologic time period and system that spanned 56 million years from the end of the Triassic Period about 201.3 million years ago to the beginning of the Cretaceous Period 145 million years ago. It constitutes the middle period of the Mesozoic Era and is divided into three epochs: Early, Middle, and Late. The name Jurassic was given to the period by geologists in the early 19th century based on the rock formations found in the Jura Mountains, which were formed during the Jurassic period.

Silicon anode batteries have the potential to revolutionize energy storage capabilities, which is key to meeting climate goals and unlocking the full potential of electric vehicles.

However, the irreversible depletion of lithium ions in silicon anodes puts a major constraint on the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Scientists at Rice Universitys George R. Brown School of Engineering have developed a readily scalable method to optimize prelithiation, a process that helps mitigate lithium loss and improves battery life cycles by coating silicon anodes with stabilized lithium metal particles (SLMPs).

Linux Mint Was Right About Snaps and It Should Make LMDE the Default (Better Yet, Base It on Devuan) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Plan for Ubuntu Snaps
Even the foremost booster of Ubuntu, Joey, called this meh (in the URL), as hes not happy about this general direction

Summary: The direction taken by Canonical in recent months has upset a lot of people, and rightly so; we kindly remind people that alternatives exist and Linux Mint already explores some of them

OVER a decade ago Canonical boasted about having a community because it did, partially, have its share of slaves volunteers, working for free to enrich an already-affluent South African. The community was being policed (managed) and occasionally threatened/censored by Jono Bacon, who nowadays does gigs for Microsoft. Like Sheela Zemlin, he brings home the bacon from Microsofts bank accounts. Canonical is also being paid by Microsoft to no longer pursue its original mission.

As noted earlier today, both IBM and Canonical are turning from mostly passive to evil. Evil means actively pursuing monopolies and promoting proprietary software, even for Microsoft. Passive means doing nothing at all about Microsofts attacks on the GNU/Linux user pool, e.g. UEFI secure boot. They could at least file an antitrust complaint or merely join one. Instead they swam in Microsoft clown computing money. Way to betray your slaves volunteers they supported your users (clients) for free and now you empower Microsoft?

On the positive side, these dick moves from Canonical will quite likely motivate people to explore truly community-led distros.A couple of weeks ago we learned about a vision or plan of a Snap-only Ubuntu (this will, eventually, become the only option) and days ago a person close to Canonical said they were demoting the roots of Ubuntu (Debian). He seemed rather displeased about the move and years ago he started a...

Tips for an Information Security Analyst/Pentester career - Ep. 88 - New Pentester? Less CTFs, More Ninja. "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

I've recently turned 3 years in my pentesting role and, over this time, I've trained new guys approaching the industry, every now and then.

Over time, I realized most beginners share a common mindset that can create issues when dealing with their first real-world engagements.

BACKGROUND
When newcomers attempt to break into the pentesting industry, the main obstacle they face is their lack of experience.
Experience is often a hard requirement as an entry barrier because real-world targets are much more complex and hardened, and way more prone to crash.

So, aspiring pentesters try to make up for their lack of experience by engaging in training platforms like Hack The Box (HTB), TryHackMe (THM), Offensive Security Proving Grounds (PG), and a bunch of other ones, you name it.

This is a good approach because:
  1. It shows real motivation
  2. Some vulnerable machines might allow to learn techniques that can be applied (to a certain extent) to real-world targets.

Some employers are open to invest on a beginner, if they think he/she can bring something unique to the table.

Also, being active in training platforms is sometimes considered as a plus that helps a candidate stand out, and might be a factor in hiring decisions.

This is awesome, and I firmly believe we need to give junior pentesters a fai...

Indy corrects two inaccurate claims on Jenin op "IndyWatch Feed War"

An article in the Independent on the recent counter-terrorism operation in Jenin (Thousands flee Israels biggest West Bank military operation in decades, July 5), written by their Middle East correspondent Bel Trew, included the following:

Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Broders) accused the army of firing tear gas into a hospital, filling the emergency room with smoke and forcing emergency patients to be treated in a main hall.

However as the NY Times reported on same day, regarding the accusation by Doctors Without Borders, The Israelis denied any attacks near hospitals.  Similarly, Reuters included the IDFs denial to the charge by Doctors Without Borders in their article on the operation, noting that The Israeli military said it had no knowledge of its forces firing in the vicinity of a hospital but that it did carry out an air-strike at gunmen that had taken up positions in a cemetery and posed a threat to the withdrawing troops.

We complained to Indy editors asking that they amend the article to acknowledge the IDFs response, and they agreed adding the following language from Reuters:

Clock Escapement Uses Rolling Balls "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The escapement mechanism has been widely used for centuries in mechanical clocks. It is the mechanism by which a clock controls the release of stored energy, allowing it to advance in small, precise intervals. Not all mechanical clocks contain escapements, but it is the most common method for performing this function, usually hidden away in the clocks internals. To some clockmakers, this is a shame, as the escapement can be an elegant and mesmerizing piece of machinery, so [Brett] brought his rolling ball escapement to the exterior of this custom clock.

The clock functions as a kitchen timer, adjustable in 10-second increments and with several preset times available. The rolling ball takes about five seconds to traverse a slightly inclined, windy path near the base of the clock, and when it reaches one side, the clock inverts the path, and the ball rolls back to its starting place in another five seconds. The original designs for this type of escapement use a weight and string similar to a traditional escapement in a normal clock. However, [Brett] has replaced that with an Arduino-controlled stepper motor. A numerical display at the bottom of the clock and a sound module that plays an alert aft...

Hitler Betrayed Rudolf Hess (and Germany) "IndyWatch Feed War"

(At Hitlers side.)

HenryMakow.com July 9, 2023

Hitler did not have to disown his loyal lieutenant as a lunatic. He could have confirmed that Hesse was a peace emissary and demanded his return. Churchill would have looked like a warmonger. But Hitler and Churchill were in collusion. The object was to get rid of Hess so Hitlers fellow traitor Martin Bormann could take his place.

by Henry Makow PhD (from Jan 27, 2017)

According to former Nazi officials, Rudolf Hess was following Hitlers orders when he flew to Scotland in May 1941 with an offer to reverse Nazi victories in Western Europe in exchange for peace and a free hand in the East.

When Churchill rejected this offer, Hitler pretended that Hess was insane and acted on his own initiative.

Frank Brandenburg is the author of Quest: Searching for the Truth of Germanys Nazi Past (1992).  Around 1980, he spoke to Hess wife Ilse, as well as many other Nazis who made a convincing case that Hesss peace mission was in fact authorized by the Fuhrer.

My husband would not have acted without the Fuhrers consent,  Mrs. Hess said. My husband was totally loyal to the Fuhrer. (263-264)

Her conviction was confirmed by Hitlers personal pilot Hans Baur who said Hess had been given secret map codes in Hitlers possession. (260) Hess closest associate Ernst Wilhelm Bohle said he translated Hitlers offer into English. (271-2)

SS General Karl Wolff said Hitlers outrage was a show.  Wolff was at a meeting with Hitler at the Berghof when the news of Hesss flight to England was brought to him. The Fuhrer threw a terrible temper tantrumhe put on quite a showthe Fuhrer was an accomplished actor when he wanted to be (246)

More telling is the fact that Hitler punished many of Hesss minor associates but not his family or Boehle. When you think about it, Hess would never have tried to usurp peace-making powers from Hitler nor left his family as hostages.

Nevertheless, the Powers That Be have succeeded in making Hess out to be a lunatic rather than an idealistic peacemaker.  They have managed to bury Brandenburgs book. It was published by a tiny publisher of military books, Presidio, in Novato CA in 1990. In 2002, Presidio was bought by Random House which is owned by Bertelsmann. You can bet Bertelsmann is controlled by the Illuminati.

Cluster Bombs for Ukraine? A Warning From Kosovo "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Phil Miller | Declassified UK | July 6, 2023

Gracanica, Kosovo  In the village where we lived, there were nine bombs dropped by NATO in the space of two minutes, Dzafer Buzoli recalls, as we discuss his traumatic childhood in Yugoslavia. A leading member of Kosovos Roma, his community went from pillar to post.

Many were dragooned into Slobodan Milosevics Serb-dominated Yugoslav army or targeted by Albanian rebels as suspected collaborators, before Bill Clinton and Tony Blair launched their humanitarian intervention in 1999.

When the first bomb fell, we were just confused and wondered what was happening, he reflects. But after the second bomb I felt the hot air and fell down from the pressure of the blast.

Ever since then Ive had a heightened sense of hearing. When theres a loud noise or people yelling I have to really back up, because its too much for me.

Buzoli was lucky to survive the airstrike. Two soldiers and a five year old boy were killed in the attack on his village of Laplje Selo, which was hit with controversial cluster munitions.

These scatter a blizzard of ball-shaped bomblets over target areas, like a minefield falling from the sky. Human Rights Watch said NATO killed between 90 and 150 civilians with this weapon across Serbia and Kosovo.

Thousands of bomblets failed to detonate on impact, posing a hazard to children who mistook their little yellow parachutes for toys. In the decade after the war, these remnants claimed another 178 casualties in Kosovo.

While this war might seem like a distant memory for those beyond the Balkans, it offers a cautionary tale to Western states now assisting Ukraines fight against Russia.

US officials are said to be seriously considering supplying Kyiv with cluster bombs, possibly as soon as next month.

Thats despite the weapon being banned by more than 120 countries including the UK, following a UN treaty in 2008.

The US refused to sign up to the ban and there are suspicions it uses a loophole to store them at its air bases in Britain.

Both Russia and Ukraine, fellow non-signatories, have already fired cluster bombs in their current conflict and supplies from America could further complicate the situation.

Lessons from Kosovo

Unexploded cluster munitions remain a hazard in Kosovo long after NATOs 11 week air war ended in 1999.

Goran, a Kosovo Serb, recalls how the weapon almost killed a farmer in a vineyard near Gracacinas orthodox monastery, a world heritage site.

He drove his tractor straight over the bomb, Goran tells me. He was......

As per the agency, three members of a family were killed in a house collapse following a landslide due to rains in the Kotgarh area of Shimla district. On the other hand, a landslide also damaged a makeshift house near Kullu town, leaving a woman dead. In another incident, a person was buried alive following a landslide in Katiyan tehsil of Chamba on Saturday night, PTI reported. Meet Lira: Lebanons First Electric Car "IndyWatch Feed World"

<p>While were still waiting <a href= "https://blogbaladi.com/ev-electra-rise-first-100-lebanese-car-to-launch-in-february/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Electra</a> to come up with their first electric car after their launch party in 2021, Lebanese engineer Hisham Hosami has officially launched Lira: a solar-powered Lebanese-made electric car.</p> <p>The launch ceremony took place on July 8th in front of the Ministry of Economy building in Lazariya in the presence of Economy Minister Amin Salam. The Lira can accommodate 5 people, has a GPS device, front & back camera and a touch-screen Android device. You can drive up to 200 km on a full charge and Lira is expected to sell between 5k and 15k based on what I read.

Visually speaking, the car is hideous but if it turns out to be affordable and reliable, then I dont see any reason why it wouldnt work, except the need to charge frequently and the lack of public charging stations as well as the lack of electricity all together of course.</p> <p>I couldnt find any official website for LIRA to read more about its technical and safety specs, and its not clear when it will go into production and if it will eventually be manufactured.</p> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-69279" height= "426" src= "https://blogbaladi.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/lira-electric1.jpg" width="640"></p> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-69278" height= "426" src= "https://blogbaladi.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/lira2.jpg" width="640"></p>

Return to the homeland "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

After completing our top-secret mission yesterday, weve allocated our day today to exploring the ancestral homeland. My mother was born in Gary, Minnesota in 1939, although she quickly escaped to the fjords of Washington state. My grandparents, Paul (1917-1989) and Nora (1915-1998) spent their youth in Fertile and Gary. My great-grandfather, Peter(1880-1970), and great-grandmother, Christina (1885-1974) lived here until the whole family made a great exodus West after WWII.

But it goes back further still! My great-great-grandparents, Jens (1850-1939) and Marit (1849-1933) all lived here, too! And before them, Marits father, Ole Solem (1821-1902) and Jens father, Dyrebut there the records start getting murky. All I know is that Dyre was born in Storen, Norway at some unknown date, and died in 1874.

Our plan is to visit a cemetery or two, and drop by the towns of Fertile and Gary, and theres the Prairie Smoke Dunes Scientific and Natural Area to check out (of course were looking for spiders as we go). Those plans were complicated by the discovery that the Polk County Fair is going on in Fertile todayso we might have to stop in there for a bit, too.

Man, this place is flat. Were on the old lake bed of Lake Agassiz, and I guess Im not surprised that a bunch of old Norwegians fled this place for one with evergreen forests, mountains, and an ocean. They were probably put here to crush their intrinsic desire to build fleets of longboats and go raiding.

Two months later, an explosion rocked the Crimean Bridge that links the Crimean peninsula to Russias mainland. The massive blast was attributed to Ukrainian sabotage groups. According to official figures, Russian security services regularly foil dozens of subversive acts. The documentary takes a close look at methods used by the SBU (Ukraines Security Service), tracing their roots back to the 1940s. It also sheds light on deep ties between radical Ukrainian nationalist leaders and the American intelligence agencies. Declassified documents also reveal details of Washingtons Operation Aerodynamic which covertly funded and directed Ukrainian nationalists with Nazi pedigree, in order to fight against and destabilize the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The Founding Fathers Would Be Appalled by Trumps GOP "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

This is the first of a two-part series that contemplates what the Founding Fathers would make of todays politics and each of the parties. For Part 2, please come back tomorrow.

This Independence Day, Americans did all of the things they usually do on the Fourth of July. They spent time with family and friends, blew up stuff, killed each other, boycotted some beers and drank others. Politicians talked about Americas greatness, and Donald Trump shared a super weird picture of himself as George Washington.

That last one got us thinking: If the Founding Fathers traveled forward in time, what would they think about the state of their American experiment? How would they feel about Democrats and Republicans, and what would they say to them?

Lets start with the Republicans, who seem to view themselves as the ideological heirs of the Founding Fathers. They are big on waving the flag and calling themselves patriots. Right-wing groups have words like liberty and freedom in their names, and there is a reason why the Tea Party was called the Tea Party.

When you think about it, thats all pretty ironic.

Yes, the Founding Fathers and todays Republicans shared some of the same ideologies. For example, it stands to reason that there is some overlap on social issues.

However, seeing how the Founders lived 250 years ago, thats not exactly a badge of honor for modern-day conservatives.

Back then, even the most enlightened thinkers believed some backward stuff, e.g., that some people could own other people, just to name the big one.

Here is another way to illustrate what things were like when the Founding Fathers were alive: They signed the Declaration of Independence at a point in time that was closer to the Salem Witch Trials than the Civil War.

In other words, the colonies werent the most open-minded places kinda like todays red states

Of course, its very on-brand for conservatives to pick heroes who are actually progressives.

Take Jesus (whether as a historical or fictional character). That dude was a lot more like Bernie Sanders th...

Bipartisan Group Wants Strings Attached to Sale of F-16s to Turkey "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

You might think that, following Russias invasion of Ukraine and with an expansion of NATO on the table, the various member states of the alliance would be working together as much as possible to present a united front.

However, that is not the case. And, as per usual, Turkey is prominently involved as it tries to use its unique position within NATO to pursue its own agenda and exert pressure on the other members.

A great example is Swedens request to join the alliance, which has to be approved by all member countries. Turkey is withholding its consent to get something out of the deal.

Specifically, Ankara wants Sweden to stop harboring members of opposition groups that it considers to be terrorists.

In addition, Turkey is also trying to get the US to supply it with F-16 fighters and upgrade kits for its existing planes, and President Joe Biden has indicated that he is considering throwing such a deal in as sweetener.

However, Congress also has to approve the sale of the weapons, and different lawmakers, including Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, have already said they would block any deal unless Turkey supports Swedens bid to join NATO.

As though all of that were not complicated enough already, a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Friday wrote a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and made it clear that the purchase of the F-16s must come with strings attached and should be reversed if Turkey steps out of line.

The lawmakers, all of whom are members of the Hellenic Caucus, are especially concerned about how the arms deal would affect Greece, a NATO member but also a traditional adversary of Turkey.

In the letter to Blinken, they point to Ankaras aggression in the Aegean region and say it must stop if the US supplies Turkey with new weapons.

There must be guarantees that preclude American weapons being used to provoke a conflict within NATO, the lawmakers wrote. Given Turkeys history of using....

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit out at protests against his government's planned judicial overhaul, summoning the attorney-general to a cabinet meeting to discuss police counter-measures.

Israelis have launched mass protests since January over the reforms, which they say would weaken the judiciary and turn the Supreme Court into a pseudo-political body that would bend laws in favour of the government.

On Monday, Netanyahu's far-right coalition government will bring forward a parliamentary reading of the bill that would limit "reasonableness" as a standard of judicial review.

Opponents have said the move could lead to abuses of power.

In televised remarks on Sunday, the prime minister said that, while it was "unthinkable" to suppress the right to protest, such freedoms should not lead to "violations of the law that harm the basic rights of millions of citizens and are taking place on an almost daily basis".

US cluster bombs deal is clear signal that war is not going well for Ukraine - Sky News "IndyWatch Feed World"

The White House is fully aware of the huge controversy surrounding this cluster munitions decision. Some 123 countries are part of the 2008 International Convention on Cluster Munitions which bans the use or transfer of this particular weapon. Almost all of America's allies are signatories to the convention. Even within US government circles, there has been deep unease about supplying its own stockpile of cluster munitions to Ukraine. As recently as last week, within the state department, there was division about the decision to supply the weapon.

2023 Cyberdeck Contest: YAHRC Takes Its Power Seriously "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Cyberdecks are all about custom builds, and [f4drj]s YAHRC (Yet Another Ham Radio Cyberdeck) takes its ruggedization and power seriously. There are some great power management features, and the enclosure even has a layer of RF shielding.

YAHRC is a Raspberry Pi-based build with a generously-sized screen that tucks a small Bluetooth keyboard into a storage area for input in a pinch. Everything is secured behind custom panels, and behind those panels are some really great build details. Theres active cooling via fans, an SSD for data, and [f4drj] even made a custom riser for the GPIO header by soldering together a couple of headers to act as an extender. This exposes the GPIO header right beside a clear area for prototyping, with easy access to USB ports next to the screen in the top panel.

Chinese Customs Bust Smuggler With 420 SSDs Strapped to His Body "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Will people ever learn?:

Facepalm: When will people who smuggle hardware into China learn that strapping thousands of dollars of components to your body often leads to arrest? Once again, the country's customs have caught someone trying the same old trick. On this occasion, a trafficker had 420 M.2 SSDs attached to his torso using tape.

[...] The 420 M.2 SSDs are said to be worth around HK$258,000 or $32,984.94. That works out to an average of $78.53 each, so they're likely on the higher end of the quality scale.

[...] Smugglers have been trying imaginative ways of sneaking tech goods into China for years. In 2015, a man was caught with an impressive 146 iPhones strapped to his body. A woman attempted the same thing a few years later, reducing the number of iPhones to 102.

Taping CPUs to one's body is also popular. A pair of men tried to smuggle 256 Intel Core i7-10700 and Core i9-10900K processors, then worth $123,000, by attaching them to their calves and torsos at the height of the chip shortage in 2021. Another man did the same thing a year later, wrapping 160 CPUs and 16 folding phones to his body, and it was only in March when someone tried this with 239 CPUs.

Not everyone goes for the taping method. A woman in 2022 tried to enter China with over 200 Intel CPUs hidden in a fake pregnant belly, and a man this year tried to sneak 84 SSDs past Chinese customs by stuffing them inside an electric scooter. Some people are just lazy and simply lie about what's inside the crates they are transporting, like the man who tried to smuggle HK$30 million (about $3.8 million) of electronics through Man Kam To Control Point from Hong Kong into mainland China a few months ago.

Zelensky urges Ukraine's parliament to legalize medical cannabis to help treat injured troops, PTSD "IndyWatch Feed World"

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky calls MPs to speed the process to legalize medical cannabis amid the war against Russia's invasion. In a speech in front of the Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral Parliament of Ukraine, on the occasion of Constitution Day on June 28, Zelensky stressed the need to approve the long-awaited medical cannabis bill, which has been stalled since 2021. The Ukrainian efforts to push back the Russian invasion have not only resulted in thousands of casualties, injuries, and the destruction of towns and infrastructure but have also inflicted less visible wounds upon the Ukrainian population. Comment: Estimates are now at well over 200,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers, and conscripts.

Canonical and IBM Are Turning Ubuntu and Fedora Into Microsoft Windows, Time to Adopt Real Community Distros "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Increasingly more about social engineering and legal engineering, not technical engineering

Rocky marathon: they keep moving the goalposts, this is OK
Just because youre still on the ropes doesnt mean youre OK, Rocky

Summary: IBM, with its notorious army of aggressive lawyers and mountains of software patents, is trying to make RHEL proprietary and render Fedora spyware (they know itll put off existing and potential users; later they can claim reduced demand for it and mothball the whole thing, rebranding it as CentOS after they had already fired Fedora management and then abandoned OpenSource.com and OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice); Canonical keeps up with evil by doing some of its own and they don't compete with Microsoft, so we can trust neither of them

Webinar: What Federal Climate Action Means for the South

From the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), July 8, 2023

Learn how SELC is seizing a historic opportunity to translate recent federal law and funding into real climate progress for the South and beyond. Join us for a webinar on Thursday, July 13 at 12:30 p.m. ET to hear from our President and Executive Director DJ Gerken and SELC climate leaders on how we capitalize on this national momentum.

From building community-owned solar on abandoned coal mines to providing connectivity and better transportation choices for neighborhoods divided by bad road projects, the recent passage of legislation presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to accelerate solutions to climate change. Come hear SELCs take on the potential for new federal funding and incentives, and the role we play to ensure state agencies, local governments, and partners across the South seize this historic opportunity.

Already, we are seeing investments in our region from the recent passage of two bills in Congress, a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed in 2021 and last summers Inflation Reduction Act. All of this, paired with a government-wide focus on agency action to tackle climate change and assist communities burdened by environmental injustices, creates an unprecedented opportunity for our environmental future.

Implemented wisely, we can cut our energy costs, create good jobs, and transform the way our country addresses the climate crisis. If not, a generational opportunity could be squandered and the funding could be used for projects that make things worse.

Register today to hear from SELCs leading experts on how we plan to ensure these federal actions fulfill the promise of climate action for current and future generations.

New evidence of human occupation in Oregon 18,000 years ago "IndyWatch Feed World"

University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History Archaeological Field School, led by archaeologist Patrick O'Grady, has been excavating at the Rimrock Draw Rockshelter. Excavation has been occurring since 2011 under an official partnership agreement with the Bureau of Land Management. Discoveries at the site have included stone tools and extinct-mammal tooth fragments from the Pleistocene era. The pieces of tooth enamel are identified as bison (Bison sp.) and camel (Camelops sp.). In 2012, O'Grady's team found camel teeth fragments under a layer of volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount St. Helens that was dated over 15,000 years ago. The team also uncovered two finely crafted orange agate scrapers, one in 2012 with preserved bison blood residue and another in 2015, buried deeper in the ash. Natural layering of the rockshelter sediments suggests the scrapers are older than both the volcanic ash and camel teeth.

At least 10 people were missing and one died after a boat attempting to reach Italy sank off the coast of Tunisia on Sunday, according to a judicial official.

Tunisia's coastguard rescued 11 people from the boat, which capsized off the coast of the southeastern town of Zarzis, Faouzi Masmoudi, a judge in the nearby city of Sfax, told Reuters.

The coastal city of Sfax and neighbouring towns have become a key access point to Europe for many people attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

The number of people dead or missing in boats sunk off the Tunisian coast has reached 608, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights said on Saturday. The country's coastguard had foiled attempts to board boats by around 33,000 people, the rights group added.

In recent weeks, Tunisians in Sfax have held protests against the presence of refugees.

Thank you, and thanks for Techrights

Dr. Schestowitz,

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for all the work that you do to inform the public about the news and politics of free software.

I first encountered your boycott-novell blog after the novell/ms agreement was announced. I found your coverage to be very enlightening. It is the first time I became aware that incumbent megacorporations in the IT industry were trying to erode the adoption of free software and the free software movement discreetly.

After the novell/ms agreement faded in my memory, and as novells assets were sold again and again, I lost track of your site. However, years later, around 2018 I rediscovers your reporting again in Techrights, and I have been actively reading it since. Lately, I have been listening to the audio of your videos and I am grateful that you make them available. I am more informed as a result. I would be ignorant on the news and political landscape of free software without your reporting.

I am grateful that you shared your experience about your departure from sirius. It was very helpful to me because your descriptions of bad management there were very similar to the toxic management I had at my old job. It helped me not feel gaslit by their statements and actions knowing that someone else had a similar experience.

My life is better because you share your time and your work with me. I wanted you to know. If I can support your work and Techrights, pleas...

Amateur Anti-Piracy Professionals Make Bank Sending DMCA Notices "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

dollars-sOver the past couple of decades, thousands of people have leveraged the masses of pirated content available online to make a few bucks here and there.

Others have thrown caution to the wind and set out in search of the big money. Launching full-blown pirate platforms or platforms that claim to be legitimate (but were actually full-blown pirate platforms), many believed that one day it would either be free drinks at the bar, or many years behind them. Could go either way, you never know.

Todays pirate entrepreneurs have never had it so easy. Using pre-built sites and content APIs, committing to go full-pirate in the morning can mean running a site the same day. From there on, its just a simple case of keeping everything running, dealing with the whims of thousands of users, quashing a moderator mutiny three times a year, and the timeless classic, not getting sued or arrested. Simple.

Yet when all of that is completely under control, someone still comes along and starts issuing DMCA notices to Google, web hosts, and domain registrars. And guess what? Some are making a whole lot of money in the process, working from home, risk-free.

Making a Living: DMCA Freelancing

DMCA notices listed on the Lumen Database are an invaluable source of information when investigating instances of copyright abuse. Companies including Google and Twitter submit notices constantly and the overwhelming majority carry enough useful information.

Some information is redacted for privacy reasons, often when the notice includes the name of a private individual, for example. What stands out here is that there are many questionable notices that have the copyright holder and the submitters names redacted, meaning that it becomes extremely difficult to identify who is behind malicious behavior.

When disappearing down the rabbit hole recently, an accidental turn led to the freelancer site Kwork where its possible to hire someone to send DMCA notices to have content removed from Google, Bing, and social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

work-dmca-1

Through various means it was possible to link some of the freelancers on Kwork with redacted notices on the Lumen Database, not necessarily dubious notices in every cas...

Hal Turner: Russia Confirms BRICS To Launch Gold-Backed Currency "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Hal Turner The Hal Turner Show July 7, 2023

According to state-run Russian Television (RT), the Russian Government HAS CONFIRMED Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, known as the BRICS nations, will introduce a new trading currency backed by Gold.

The official announcement is expected during the upcoming BRICS Summit in South Africa, this August.

If this takes place, it will likely mark the end of fiat currencies like the US Dollar, which is backed by nothing.

How fast nations around the world switch to using this new gold-backed currency for their foreign trade, is anyones guess.

The more countries that choose to use this new currency, the more foreign-held US Dollars will come rushing back to the USA from those countries, which no longer need to hold US Dollars for their foreign trade.   As those Dollars come back to the USA, it will cause inflation to spike in ways never-before seen here in America.

The US manufactures almost nothing here anymore.  Almost everything we buy and sell in the USA is made overseas.   As US dollars come flooding back from overseas, the value of the US dollar will plummet versus other currencies, which means it will take many more US Dollars to buy goods from foreign countries.

Hence, sudden and dramatic inflation here at home.

It is worth pointing out that the US has, on more than one occasion, gone to actual WAR to stop this exact thing from taking place in the past.   Two recent examples would be Libya and Iraq.

In Libya, Mohamar Qadaffi wanted to create a gold-back Pan-African currency.   Within a month of his announcement, there were riots and uprisings in Libya that ultimately resulted in Qadaffi being mobbed and brutally killed in the streets.

Iraq made a similar effort under Saddam Hussein.    He announced that Iraq would begin selling oil in currencies OTHER THAN the US Dollar, which sent the US to Iraq War 2, toppling Hussein from power.  Ultimately, Hussein was found hiding in a hole in the ground, was arrested, tried, and HUNG BY HIS NECK until dead.

The US takes it ___ V E R Y ____ serious when anyone around the world tries to do anything that would unseat the US dollar as the worlds defacto Reserve Currency.

The US is already itching to go to war with Russia over the Ukraine conflict.   With todays announcement about a Gold-Backed BRICS trading currency, it seems logical that the US gloves will come off.

If Russia and the BRICS Nations do what they have announced, it would mean the total collapse of US world dominance.  There are many people inside the US Government that would rather burn the entire world to the ground, rather than lose control of it.  Put simply, they will stop at NOTHING to maintain their financial control power; an...

Stirring Up 3D-Printed Lab Equipment "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Magnetic stirrers are a core part of many chemistry labs. They offer many advantages for ensuring the effective mixing of solutions compared to other methods of stirring, including consistency, precise control, operation within closed systems, and of course, hands-free automatic operation. With so many reasons for employing a magnetic stirrer, its not too surprising that [Joey] would want one. He built his using 3D-printed parts rather than purchasing it.

The magnetic stirrer uses a 3D-printed enclosure for the base. Inside is a PWM controller which sends power to a small DC motor. A 3D-printed arm is attached to the motor, which hosts a pair of magnets. As the arm spins inside the enclosure, the magnetic fields from the magnet couple with the stir bar inside the mixture, allowing it to spin without any mechanical link to the stirring device and without any input from the user. [Joey] has also made all the 3D-printed parts for this build available on Printables.

While magnetic stirrers arent the most complicated of devices (or the most expensive), building tools like this anyway often has other advantages,...

Americans Who Fought Putin Share Horrifying War Surprises "IndyWatch Feed War"

Shannon Vavra The Daily Beast July 1, 2023

In the days preceding Russias invasion of Ukraine, David Bramlette found himself in a classroom in Washington, D.C. discussing whether Russia might invade Ukraine. He was in the middle of earning a masters degree from Johns Hopkins in international affairs. At the time, he admits, he found the prospect of a Russian invasion implausible.

But when Russia eventually pulled the trigger and invaded Ukraine in February last year, David, who had previously completed stints working for the U.S. military as a Green Beret on a counter-Russia mission and as an Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan, felt compelled to go fight the Russians.

Its good and evil in my mind, Bramlette told The Daily Beast in an interview from Kyiv this week.

Im sitting in class, and Im like, I could sit here and finish my degree and go work in some office job, and have a tiny iota of impact on the world working in some government office, right? Bramlette recounted. I have the knowledge and the skills and abilities to go help. So I basically took a leave of absence from my masters program and went over.

By early March Bramlette, who goes by Bam, was en route to Warsaw, Poland to get his bearings before joining the foreign legion in Ukraine. While boarding the plane to Poland, Bam said he sent his parents a quick email explaining why he was going to war for another country.

I sent my parents an email that says like This is the most righteous war that I think my generation will see in our lifetime. This is straight up good versus evil, Bramlette told The Daily Beast. Thats why I went. I was like, I cant put up with this shit.

Like Bramlette, former Marine Troy Offenbecker was compelled to join the fight against Russias invasion early on in the war. He told The Daily Beast that Russian atrocities against Ukrainians reported in the news were part of the final straw that got him geared up to go to war.

Theres a lot of really dumb-ass volunteers over here who have no business being in a war.

Last March Id seen everything that was happening, and when I heard about the international legion, I knew I was going to come, Offenbecker told The Daily Beast in an interview from Kyiv. But at the time I had some obligations that were holding me there. It took me two months I had to sell my house, I sold my vehicles.

Offenbecker spent tim...

There are ZERO Amish kids suffering from cancer, diabetes or autism WHY IS THAT? "IndyWatch Feed War"

YourDestinationNow | July 8, 2023

The current population of Amish folks in America is quickly approaching 400,000, with the largest concentrations of 90,000 in Pennsylvania and 82,000 in Ohio. Amish have settled in as many as 32 US states, and have an average of 7 kids per family, so the population is growing rapidly. In a brand new, comprehensive study (as of June 2023), presented by Steve Kirsch to the Pennsylvania State Senate, it was calculated that for Amish children, who are strictly 100 percent not vaccinated (fully unvaccinated), typical chronic conditions barely exist, if any at all.

These chronic conditions, also called preventable diseases and disorders, that nearly many vaccinated children and swaths of Americans suffer from, include auto-immune disease, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, ADHD, arthritis, cancer, and of course wait for it autism (think ASD and Aspergers Syndrome).

Expert panelists testified how healthy Amish children are compared to vaccinated American children

Maybe scaring people off vaccines is a good thing, for all those pro-jab-fanatics who think every natural health advocate is a conspiracy theorist who spreads disease and disorder by talking about dirty vaccines, vaccine injuries and vaccine-induced deaths. During testimony, expert health advocates shared WHY theres never been any reports published regarding the health of Amish children in general, saying After decades of studying the Amish, theres no report because the report would be devastating to the narrative. It would show that the CDC has been harming the public for decades and saying nothing and burying all the data.

Dr. Peter McCullough, a top cardiologist in America, with mountains of peer-reviewed, published work, testified before the U.S. Senate and before legislatures throughout the U.S., regarding dangers of vaccines, including the COVID-19 gene-mutating jabs. Speaking of the pandemic, the Amish did NOT lock down, they did NOT put on bacteria-bree...

Speaking of the pandemic, the Amish did NOT lock down, they did NOT put on bacteria-breeding masks, and they most certainly did NOT vaccinate for the Wuhan Lab Flu. They ignored every single CDC and Fauci-propagandized mandate and protocol, including the deadly clot shots (because they knew better than to get injected with millions of toxic, sticky spike proteins and graphite nanoparticles).

Guess what happened? The Amish had a survival rate of COVID 90 times higher than the rest of America. Nobody wants to talk about this, exc...

Irish farmers outraged over government plan to cull 200,000 cows to meet climate goals "IndyWatch Feed War"

Cassie B. Natural News July 7, 2023

Irish farmers are pushing back against a proposal by the government to cull hundreds of thousands of cows in hopes of meeting their commitment to becoming climate neutral.

A report by the Irish Department of Agriculture outlined how 200,000 cows could be killed over the next three years to meet carbon targets. The plan would reportedly come at a cost of around 600 million euros to taxpayers, with the document indicating that 5,000 euros per cow would be offered as compensation.

The countrys Environmental Protection Agency said that the agriculture industry was creating nearly 40 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions there, and much of it stems from the methane in livestock and the use of nitrogen fertilizer. The country has committed to reducing its agricultural emissions by 25 percent by the year 2030.

They are calling the plan a dairy reduction scheme, but the result is the senseless slaughter of hundreds of thousands of animals in the name of somehow helping the environment.

The cull would entail killing 65,000 cows per year over the next three years, reducing the countrys overall dairy herd by 10 percent. It is being positioned as a potential retirement exit scheme for aging farmers.

Farmers believe cattle culling will backfire

The president of the Irish Farmers Association, Tim Cullinan, said that the plan would only serve to increase farmers mistrust in the government and will not have the intended environmental aims.

He said: Reducing dairy or beef production in Ireland will also lead to carbon leakage with production moving to other countries with a higher carbon footprint. This is likely to increase global warming rather than reducing it.

Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association President Pat McCormack believes that the focus should be on other sectors when it comes to helping the environment. He said: Were the one industry with a significant roadmap, and, to be quite honest with you, our herd isnt any larger than it was 25 to 30 years ago. Can the same be said for the transport industry, can the same be said for the aviation industry?

He added that any culling that takes place needs to be done on a voluntary basis. McCormack said that farmers would be willing to do their part to help preserve the environment, but that forcing the issue is not a solution.

Other critics of the plan fear that the move could have a major effect on the country that is not unlike what happened during the potato famine. Australian geologist Ian Plimer said that the move would only end in disaster.

Key Predictors of Bitcoin Returns Unveiled "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Blockchain technology, investor sentiment, and economic stress are useful for forecasting, while bitcoin's detachment from economic fundamentals make it a poor safe-haven asset:

Blockchain technology, investor sentiment, and economic stress levels are significant predictors of bitcoin returns, according to a groundbreaking paper from Illinois Institute of Technology researchers that provides empirical evidence to help guide investors, economists, and academics.

Sang Baum "Solomon" Kang, associate professor of finance at Illinois Tech's Stuart School of Business and co-author of the paper, also found that the cryptocurrency is detached from economic fundamentals and therefore may not effectively serve as a diversifier or safe-haven asset. Additionally, Kang reported that returns on commodities, securities, and other assets do not predict bitcoin returns well.

[...] The team used predictive analytics techniques and dimension-reduction models on data from January 2011 to January 2020, analyzing 25 information variables under the categories macroeconomics, blockchain technology, other assets, stress level, and investor sentiment.

"We find that blockchain technology, investor sentiment, and stress level have predictive power for bitcoin returns," says Kang. "Similar to traditional assets, bitcoin shows higher return predictability with longer return horizons. These findings support the dual nature of bitcoin as a technical artifact and speculative asset."

BBC ME bureau chief frames the IDF operation in Jenin "IndyWatch Feed War"

Among the BBCs early coverage of the recent two-day counter-terrorism operation in Jenin was a filmed item published on the afternoon of July 3rd with the headline What is happening in Jenin in 60 seconds.

The BBCs Middle East bureau chief presented his assessment as follows: [emphasis in italics in the original, emphasis in bold added]

Floto: This is an ongoing operation involving, we think, thousands of Israeli troops. And theyre currently operating inmainly in the Jenin refugee camp. We do know that overnight the Israeli military launched an airstrike against what it describes as a command-and-control centre most likely just a house where people were meeting.

Ehthey then continued with further airstrikes carried out by drones to clear the way for troops to enter Jenin refugee camp. Just to give you a picture, this is an area thats incredibly densely populated. Tens of thousands of people live in Jenin and the surrounding areas. Narrow streets, lots of people there and the chances of people being caught in the crossfire are high. Its a high-risk operation.

In terms of scale, we havent seen this level of operation in many, many years and already this year is the deadliest in the West Bank since 2005 when records were kept in the same way.

RFK Jr. torches Biden for handing 'horrific' cluster munitions to Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed World"

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. blasted the Biden administration Friday following an announcement that the Department of Defense would transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine. The Biden administration announced plans to primarily send M864 155-millimeter artillery shells, known as Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munitions (DPICM), which dispense smaller explosive weapons over an area to attack personnel and vehicles, reversing a previous decision to withhold the weapons. Cluster munitions are controversial due to the risk posed by "dud" submunitions that could cause harm to civilians long after a conflict is over and were last manufactured in the 1990s, The Washington Post reported. "Cluster bombs are munitions so horrific for civilians that more than a hundred nations have signed an international treaty banning them," Kennedy, who is challenging President Joe Biden for the Democratic Party's nomination for president in the 2024 election, posted on Twitter....

Clock Runs Computer In Slow-Motion "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

At the heart of all computers is a clock, a dedicated timepiece ensuring that all of the parts of the computer are synchronized and can work together to execute the instructions that the computer receives. Clock speeds for most modern off-the-shelf computers and smartphones operate around a billion cycles per second, and even clocks that tick at a human-dizzying speed of a million times per second have been around since at least the 1970s. But theres no reason a computer cant run at a much slower speed, as [Greg] demonstrates in this video where he slows down a 6502 processor to a single clock cycle per second.

To reduce the clock speed from the megahertz range down to a single hertz or single clock cycle per second, [Greg] is using the pendulum from an actual clock. He attaches a small magnet to the bottom of the pendulum which is counted by a sensor as it swings past. Feeding that pulse into a monostable conditioner yields a clock signal which is usable for one of his 6502-based computers, and at this extremely slow rate, its possible to see the operation of a lot of the computers inner workings a step at a time. In fact, he optimized the computers operation as this slow speed let him see some inefficiencies in the program he was...

Covid censorship proved to be deadly "IndyWatch Feed World"

In the wake of the 1986 Challenger space-shuttle explosion, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman knew that the truth would both fuel progress and soothe the nation's sorrow. "For a successful technology," he said, "reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." For three years, pandemic public relations mocked nature, generating fear, illness, inflation and excess death beyond what the virus caused. Digital censorship supercharged the effort to hide reality, but reality is getting its day in court. On July 4, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty temporarily blocked numerous federal agencies and the White House from collaborating with social-media companies and third-party groups to censor speech. Discovery in Missouri v. Biden exposed relationships among government agencies and social-media firms and revealed an additional layer of university centers and self-styled disinformation watchdogs and fact-checking outfits.

A Bankrupt Calculus: Sending Cluster Munitions to Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed War"

There is a certain desperation in the logic of those who argue that a depraved solution has merit because its only slightly less depraved than that of the opponent.  Torture is bad but should still be used because your adversary feels free to resort to it. Only do so, however, via judicial warrant.  Bombing hospitals is terrible, but when done, select those with military personnel.  Before long, ones moral compass does not so much adjust as vanish into a horizon of relativist horror.

Much of this is evident in the Ukraine War, notably regarding weapons supply and deployment.  Ukraine, the Biden administration has announced, will receive cluster munitions, despite their appalling record as, in the words of a coalition of civil society organisations, indiscriminate weapons that disproportionately harm civilians, both at the time of use and for years after a conflict has ended.  Some detail of this was provided in a July 7 White House press briefing by the National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan.

According to Sullivan, Washington based its security assistance decision on Ukraines needs on the ground, and Ukraine needs artillery to sustain its offensive and defensive operations.  It all came down to the sustained use of artillery in the conflict.  Ukraine is firing thousands of rounds a day to defend against Russian efforts to advance and also to support its own efforts to retake its sovereign territory.

Preference shown by Sullivan for the they do it, so we can argument, a vagabonds reasoning.  In an effort to minimise culpability, he reasons that the US has better cluster munitions than those of the Russian military.  (Such a marvellous difference and bound to excite those keen on flimsy moral calculi.)  First, Sullivan makes the claim that Russia had been using cluster munitions since the start of this war to attack Ukraine.  No mention is made of claims by Human Rights Watch that Ukraine has already deployed cluster bombs, notably on Russian-controlled areas in and around Izium in 2022.

A point is also made that Russian forces had been using munitions with a failure rate of between 30 and 40 percent.  In this environment, Ukraine has been requesting cluster munitions in order to defend its own sovereign territory.  The cluster munitions that we would provide have dud rates far below what Russia is doing is providing not higher than 2.5 percent.  The admission is telling, if only because US law and regulations prohibit the transfer of cluster munitions with dud rates higher than 1 percent.

Kyiv has also wo...

Russian military responds to US drone harassment complaints "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | July 9, 2023

The Russian Air Force is conducting joint exercises with its Syrian counterparts, so part of the countrys airspace remains off-limits to the US-led forces, the Defense Ministry reiterated after the Pentagon accused Russia of harassing American drones for the third time this week.

The Russian side once again expresses concern about the systematic violations of deconfliction protocols related to the flights of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the so-called international anti-terrorist coalition, the deputy head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, Rear Adm. Oleg Gurinov, said in a statement on Saturday.

On Friday, the commander of US Air Forces Central, Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, claimed that three MQ-9 drones were once again harassed by Russian fighter aircraft while flying over Syria, for the third day in a row. He shared no footage of the encounters this time, but accused Russian pilots of making 18 unprofessional close passes that caused the MQ-9s to react to avoid unsafe situations.

On Wednesday, Moscow and Damascus kicked off a joint air defense drill, which is scheduled to last until the middle of this month. Electronic warfare units are also involved in the exercise, preparing for joint action to counter enemy airstrikes.

Asked whether the US drones could have indeed flown into a restricted area, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder insisted at a press briefing on Thursday that it would be preposterous to suggest Washington was to blame.

You did you see the video?.. So to suggest that somehow, you know, this is our fault, its ridiculous. So okay?, he told journalists .

Ryder went on to say that US forces have very successfully deconflicted with the Russians over many years but refused to say whether the US was following deconfliction protocols this time.

Hackaday Prize 2023: Supercapacitors Let Solar Speaker Work in Darkness "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A loudspeaker with a supercapacitor PCB next to it

Solar panels are a great way to generate clean electricity, but require some energy storage mechanism if you also want to use their power at night. This can be a bit tricky for large solar farms that feed into the grid, which require enormous battery banks or pumped storage systems to capture a reasonable amount of energy. Its much easier for small, handheld solar gadgets, which work just fine with a small rechargeable battery or even a big capacitor. [Jamie Matthews], for instance, built a loudspeaker that runs on solar power but can also work in the dark thanks to two supercapacitors.

The speakers 3D-printed case has a 60 x 90 mm2 solar panel mounted at the front, which charges a pair of 400 Farad supercaps. More asexuality in rightwing media "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As many people know, I moonlight as a media watchdog on the subject of asexuality, using Google Alerts for tracking. Mostly that means finding interesting essays to promote on The Asexual Agenda, but on very rare occasion I find some hateful garbage, which I pluck out for communal mockery. See previous editions of this series from 2018 and 2022.

1. Asexual contamination

Remember that whole thing where the publishers of Roald Dahl were revealed to have been quietly editing their books to be more in line with modern sensitivities? Yeah, me neither. Conservative newspapers were all over that stuff though, and were clearly diving into the bottom of the barrel for related stories.

Specifically, they honed in on the consultancy group, Inclusive Minds, which was hired in an advisory role when making the edits. More specifically they honed in on Jo Ross-Barrett, one person involved in that consultancy group, allegedly (not confirmed) leading the Dahl project. More specifically, they honed in on the fact that Jo Ross-Barrett is an autistic, non-binary, asexual, polyamorous relationship anarchist.

Yes, clearly the Daily Mail knows how to identify the most relevant facts of the situation. This story was also picked up by Breitbart and the New York Post. For more sensible reporting of the facts, Id point to this article in Consultancy.uk.

I dont have any strong opinions about the Dahl issue either way. But, clearly if you were going to blame someone, it would be the publishers, not the people hired by the publishers, no? I heard that the publishers have edited their books many times before, and surely they dont always hire the same consultants.

I think what happened was the newspapers cast about for anyone even loosely associated with the issue. And when someone identified as asexual, non-binary, and polyamorous, that short-circuited their brains, because they are quite simply bigots. This follows a similar pattern to one of the last articles I wrote about, where something was going on with Disney in the conservative news, so they found somebody somewhere at Disney who said she was biromantic asexual. The asexuals, they contaminate everything they touch, and everything touched by what they touch, and so on.

I figure conservative newspapers arent just doing this for asexuals, itR...

Tips for an Information Security Analyst/Pentester Career - Ep. 92: 5 Unexpected Tips for A Successful Career Growth "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

I've been a security consultant for almost 5 years, so I collected my share of war stories.

For this reason, I thought I could share with you some experience-driven tips I believe to be critical for achieving success in this industry,  and that helped me a lot along the way.

I think some of them will blow your mind, but it's a needed shock to be successful in this industry, and the sooner you go through it the better.

Well, here we go:

  1. Always be professional: Most people think penetration testing is all about technical skills, but nothing could be farther from truth. Especially if you work for a consulting firm, projecting a professional image at all times is paramount. The client expects for you to be a subject matter expert and to be able to explain in layman's terms what problems you found, what their impact is and especially how to remediate them. This means you need to be professional at all times. As far as the client is concerned, you are your company, so you want to look at your best. Even when clients are mean and rude, you can never get down to their level, you're expected to keep your cool and continue delivering. This can be sometimes very hard. I've experienced specific situations where I really struggled to keep my cool, faced with rude and combative attitudes, but I did because I knew I'd be the only one looking bad. At the end of the day, penetration testing is all about business mindset and professional communication. Yes, you heard it right, sorry to break this to you. You can be the most amazing tester on a technical standpoint, but you become worthless if you can't explain your findings to the clients in terms they would understand, and if you don't know how to communicate with clients in a professional and personable way. So make sure you got your your, you're and so on right. And forget about CTFs and frat house attitudes. Corporate security is much more a tie-and-suit affair than you might think. The most challenging part of being a consultant is to avoid an adversarial attitude and convince the client you're on their team, you're on on their side and you're not the enemy. I believe each one of us can do better under this point of view.
  2. Be a team player: Security companies are often organized in teams and sometimes, for more complex tests, you may find yourself having to collaborate with other consul...

...there would be no need for 2, 3, or 4 if everything went to plan. While it is clear today that goal was never reached, what might not be evident is that what PL/I was trying to achieve was a pretty reasonable idea, or at least not entirely crazy. What also wasn't evident at the time was how enormously difficult that reasonable idea turned out to be.

PL/I was designed by IBM with the goal of bringing together the power of 3 different programming languages: FORTRAN (1954), ALGOL (1958), and COBOL (1959).

On paper, this makes a lot of sense. Computer programming can be difficult, and why should there be multiple programming languages? And because computer programming of the era required a lot of punched cards, having One Good Programming Language would have on paper (or cardboard) benefits to simplify the process of development as well. Work on the PL/I specification started in 1964, and work on the first compiler in 1966.

[...] But PL/I wasn't just a development effort, it was also in effect a system conversion. There was an explicit goal for developers to start using PL/I, but were also implicit goals for developers not just to only stop using FORTRAN, COBOL, and ALGOL directly, as well as to convert their existing solutions and codebases to PL/I. As if that wasn't hard enough, compounding the problem was that FORTRAN, COBOL, and ALGOL were all evolving in real time. As I described in my BLOG@CACM post one of the most difficult things to do in software engineering. The existing system typically has massive head start, and the replacing system needs to start up development, accelerate, reach feature parity, and then both systems need to be stable long enough to make the switch.

The author presents development timelines of COBOL, FORTRAN and ALGOL showing development on these languages was active for years after PL/I development had started. The historical verdict?

FLASHBACK: Naked Allegiance "IndyWatch Feed World"

In the Hans Christian Andersen's fable, The Emperor's New Clothes, there is an Emperor who loves to wear lavish clothing and parade around town showing them off. One day, two swindlers come to town and offer to weave the Emperor an exquisite new suit. They tell the Emperor that the suit will be so special that it will be invisible to people who are stupid or incompetent. As the swindlers pretend to weave his new clothes, the emperor and government officials visit their shop to check on their progress, and as they see that the looms are weaving nothing, they all pretend otherwise to avoid being thought a fool. When the weavers finally announce that the Emperor's new suit is finished, they pretend to dress him in the new clothes, and the Emperor sets off in a procession before the whole city, completely naked but believing that he is fully clothed in the most extravagant garments. The people of the city go along with this pretense for fear of appearing inept or stupid if they didn't....

Buried on the far side of the Moon, the detection of a mysterious heat-emitting object leads to an unexpected discovery "IndyWatch Feed World"

It sounds like the plot of a science fiction film: scientists detect odd emissions coming from the far side of the Moon, leading to the discovery of something buried under the lunar surface that fundamentally reshapes how we see Earth's natural satellite and its history. However, the recent detection of a large, heat-emitting mass buried beneath the far side of the Moon is no scene from science fiction in this case. It is among a series of observations made by satellites in lunar orbit that suggest that Earth's Moon may have a history much more like our planet than scientists once realized. "We have discovered extra heat coming out of the ground at a location on the Moon believed to be a long dead volcano which last erupted over 3.5 billion years ago," reports Matt Siegler, Ph.D., of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona. Siegler, the lead researcher on a new study conducted by an international team that examined data collected from China's Chang'E 1 and 2 lunar...

Prion Disease and the mRNA Shots: Some Light in the Dark "IndyWatch Feed War"

By John-Michael Dumais | The Defender | July 6, 2023

In a 2022 paperStephanie Seneff, Ph.D.Peter McCullough, M.D., MPH, and others discussed how the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines produce G-quadruplexes and microRNAs that can lead to prion disease.

The effect becomes significantly worse after the second dose of the Pfizer shot.

Prions are pathogenic agents that can induce the abnormal folding of cellular proteins, leading to diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Alzheimers.

In his June 20 Substack post, researcher Adam Gaertner provides an accessible mini-tutorial on the complex and inspirational nature of cellular proteins. He addresses the structure and function of prions, the mechanisms by which they form, and how they can wreak havoc on any organ, especially the brain.

Prion disease can lead to a number of rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia, ataxia and spasticity before it becomes fatal, typically within just a few years of diagnosis.

Gaertner challenges the orthodoxy that there is no cure for prion disease by discussing several recent discoveries that offer some unexpectedly good news.

Elementary Ethics "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I watched the Podish-Sortacast today because I thought it would be interesting to hear other FtBloggers talk about how they became atheists.  The reason I bring that up is that, during the wrapup, PZ remarked that arguments for and against the supernatural really arent that interesting because they tend to be the same old arguments that have been made for centuries.  Far more important these days are various social issues like humanism, ethics and social justice, which I agree with; so I thought Id jump in with my own admittedly abecedarian understanding of ethics.  Maybe commenters can help me get my thoughts more orderly.

Almost certainly because of the way that I was raised, there are a couple of points that I treat as if they were axiomatic:

  1.  People are more important than things.

  2.  Its not all about me, and not all about my tribe.

Point 2 makes it easy for me to reject egoism and relativism as ethical principles; but between utilitarianism and a more Kantian approach, I confess to being very confused; and indeed Im skeptical about both of them.  The greatest good for the greatest number doesnt really have any meaning absent a calculus for it; and it has always seemed to me to be a pretty good general principle that the consequences of my behavior matter.

But point 1 means that I have an obligation to get through the day without being a jerkwithout causing harm to others, and particularly without exhibiting the pridefullness and hatefullness that we see in the loudest of the far right; and so, as a practical matter, I need to pick one.  I tend to be more Kantian about big issues (things like hatred of folks not like me are just wrong); but Im more utilitarian about smaller matters that are well understood.  (Should I get my flu shot?  Yeah, sure:  herd immunity.  Thats not the only reason, but its a sufficient reason.)

Have I gotten off on the right foot at least?  I hope so because, at age 76, Im pretty set in my ways. 8-)

About half of Americans say best age for president is under 60 "IndyWatch Feed World"

Nearly half of Americans would prefer a president that is under 60, according to results of a survey released Thursday. Disconnected from current candidates, 49 percent of respondents said the best age for a president is in their 50s, according to the study from the Pew Research Center. That's followed by 24 percent who said they would want someone in their 60s, and 17 percent said someone in their 40s. Only 3 percent of respondents said the best age for a president is in their 70s or older. The survey illustrates a disconnect between the desires of many Americans for a younger leader and the ages of likely 2024 presidential nominees; President Biden is 80 years old, and former President Trump, the leading Republican candidate, is 77.

Microsoft Rumour Mill: Expecting the Expensive Staff to Be Removed, Maybe "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Posted 6 hours ago:

Ive never seen nor even read of a tech company so eager and frothing at the mouth to readily run off talented, tenured, experienced people under the cover of managing out the top talent then turn back around and state in the next few sentences the bewilderment of we dont have enough people, we are short handed. As if its some huge unsolvable mystery as to how did we get here and how can we possibly solve this problem? I mean theres some forward thinking for you.

Summary: The impending Microsoft layoffs (yet another big wave) got people talking; they feel like the company removes the people most suitable for work because its all about money (3 days ago there was a comments to that effect here)

You are a chess piece, a commodity to be traded or discarded. Its nothing personal. HR is there for the company, not for you. As another poster mentioned already, some number cruncher will run a spreadsheet formula and you may or may not be on the hit list. When you are let go, your ex-coworkers feel the need to not so readily associate with you. This is encouraged by the Microsoft fostering the sentiment of letting the weak go and you certainly dont want to be seen by management by wasting your time on the weak being tossed aside.

South American leaders block Zelensky from summit "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has purged every reference to Ukraine from a joint declaration proposed by the EU, the outlet Euractiv reported on Thursday. CELAC objections also forced the EU to dis-invite Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky from a forthcoming joint summit. The 33-member South American bloc is scheduled to hold a joint summit with the EU in Brussels, starting on July 17. Spain had initially invited Zelensky to attend, but the invitation was "dropped" after "pushback" from CELAC leaders, Euractiv reported. Ahead of the meeting, the EU sent over a draft of a joint declaration, which included support for Ukraine, climate change and green energy pledges, combating corruption, and other major EU policy goals. On Tuesday, the CELAC sent back a 21-page counter-proposal, which "deleted everything about Ukraine," one EU diplomat told Euractiv.

Industrial Nitrous Oxide Emissions Could Be Easily Mitigated "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Humanity has the knowledge and resources to deal with climate change; what we lack is the political will, which means power in the hands of those who want do do that. This has become something of a mantra for me, because the idea that we need to do more research before we can deal with our greenhouse gas emissions has been annoyingly persistent. Normally, when I talk about this, its about energy production, infrastructure, and adaptation, but today its about number three on the greenhouse gas list nitrous oxide. A research team from the University of Marylands Center for Environmental Science has concluded that it would actually be pretty straightforward to mostly eliminate industrial nitrous oxide emissions:

Researchers have found that one method of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is available, affordable, and capable of being implemented right now. Nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance, could be readily abated with existing technology applied to industrial sources.

The urgency of climate change requires that all greenhouse gas emissions be abated as quickly as is technologically and economically feasible, said lead author Eric Davidson, a professor with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Limiting nitrous oxide in an agricultural context is complicated, but mitigating it in industry is affordable and available right now. Here is a low-hanging fruit that we can pluck quickly.

When greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, they trap the heat from the sun, leading to a warming planet. In terms of emissions, nitrous oxide is third among greenhouse gases, topped only by carbon dioxide and methane. Also known as laughing gas, it has a global warming potential nearly 300 times that of carbon dioxide and stays in the atmosphere for more than 100 years. It also destroys the protective ozone layer in the stratosphere, so reducing nitrous oxide emissions provides a double benefit for the environment and humanity.

Nitrous oxide concentration in the atmosphere has increased at an accelerating rate in recent decades, mostly from increasing agricultural emissions, which contribute about two-thirds of the global human-caused nitrous oxide. However, agricultural sources are challenging to reduce. In contrast, for the industry and energy sectors, low-cost technologies already exist to reduce nitrous oxide emissions to nearly zero.

Industrial nitrous oxide emissions from the chemical industry are primarily by-products from the production of adipic acid (used in the production of nylon) and nitric acid (used to make nitrogen fertilizers, adipic acid, and explosives). Emissions also come from fossil fuel combustion used in manufacturing and internal combus...

THIS early morning (at around 3AM) marked one week since I last contacted London about the crimes of Sirius Open Source. What does that tell us about British police or about police in general?

What can one conclude about crimes committed by government contractors, which are in turn protected by the government? What if the crimes are committed against the staff? Should that even matter?

If the system of law enforcement has become a system of selective enforcement (wherein selections are done by those in power), then its not a functioning system of Law and Order or the Rule of Law. Using an Old Satellite to See the Earth in a New Light "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Snooping in on satellites is getting to be quite popular, enough so that the number of people advancing the state of the art not to mention the wealth of satellites transmitting signals in the clear has almost made the hobby too easy. An SDR, a homebrew antenna, and some off-the-shelf software, and you too can see weather satellite images on your screen in real time.

But wheres the challenge? That seems to be the question [dereksgc] asked and answered by tapping into S-band telemetry from an obsolete satellite. Most satellite hunters focus on downlinks in the L-band or even the VHF portion of the spectrum, which are within easy reach of most RTL-SDR dongles. However, the Coriolis satellite, which was launched in 2003, has a downlink firmly in the S-band, which at 2.2-GHz puts it just outside the high end of an RTL-SDR. To work around this, [dereksgc] bought a knock-off HackRF SDR and couple it with a wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) of his own design. The dish antenna is also homebrewed from a used 1.8-m dish and a custom helical antenna for the right-hand circular polarized downlink signal.

As the video below shows, receiving downlink signals from Coriolis with the rig wasnt all that difficult. Even with manually steering t...

To Republicans, Target Is the Devils Playground "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Seven brave, and presumably Christian, Republican attorneys general are heroically trying to keep Beelzebub out of American retail stores.

In a letter to Target CEO Brian Cornell (which rhymes with hell, but that is surely a coincidence), the attorneys general from seven red states Indiana, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and South Carolina lament that the retail giant is selling anti-Christian products, which must surely be illegal somehow. It certainly ought to be, the Constitution notwithstanding.

Other media outlets focused on the anti-LGBTQ message and the general weirdness of the letter, which essentially amounts to these seven Republican officials trying to intimidate the company into no longer selling Pride apparel with vague suggestions that this may violate state child protection laws.

However, what has gotten lost in the ensuing outrage is that these courageous attorneys general are literally doing the Lords work.

To some, it looks as though they are using their government position to discriminate against constitutionally protected groups. But thats heathen talk.

In reality, they are highlighting that Target stores are apparently a fertile hunting ground for Mephistopheles.

Target sold products with anti-Christian designs, such as pentagrams, horned skulls, and other Satanic products, the GOP officials wrote. One such design included the phrase Satan Respects Pronouns with a horned ram representing Baphometa half-human, half-animal, hermaphrodite worshiped by the occult.

Now, mind you, fact checkers have pointed out that Target never actually sold this shirt, but you cant sweat the small stuff when you are fighting a holy war against the Prince of Darkness.

So, sure, the attorneys general got a lot of things wrong in their letter, but, in this case, the devil isnt in the details, its in T-shirts sold (or not sold) at Target.

Heaven knows how many souls have already been lost to these satanic products.

However, fear not.
