Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) with David Holmgren "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

<p><h3>Why study permaculture?</h3> <p><strong>Join us for internationally-recognised permaculture training that will help you design sustainable, abundant homes, businesses, professions and communities.</strong></p> <p>Whilst population growth and consumption levels are pushing our Planet towards a catastrophic environmental tipping point, permaculture design offers a way that we, as individuals and communities, can take control of our future and live sustainably.</p> <p>It is a design system which draws upon the great truths of traditional knowledge, modern scientific understandings and the ethics of a peaceful and democratic society. Developed in Australia in the late 70s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, it is now taught in over 150 countries. Over a million people have graduated from Design Courses and are using this tool to build resilience and diversity into their lives, their local communities & in the workplace.

David Suzuki dubs permaculture 'Australia's greatest intellectual export'.

Permaculture can be employed by anyone, whatever profession or skill, on any scale: from individual, household, urban or rural, to balconies, backyards & neighbourhoods, to farms, factories, businesses, schools and cities anywhere on the planet and in any climate. It offers a sustainable landscape, dignified human-scale living and self-reliant children who have the confidence to design a sustainable future for themselves.

Permaculture is based on three ethics: Care of the Earth, Care of Community and Acceptance of personal responsibility for consumption and population. Many practical design principles, technologies and strategies have evolved to make permaculture one of the most accessible and dynamic solutions to the issues we face in the 21st Century.

Permaculture Design Certificate

This 10 day intensive design course, taught at The Food Forest will present you with an opportunity to consider your life in a new light and give you increased confidence and many skills needed to design a sustainable and meaningful place for your future.

Twitter Suspends Copyright Holder as Musk Outlaws Weaponization of DMCA "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

pirate twitterIn May 2022, Elon Musk declared overzealous use of the DMCA a plague on humanity.

As CEO of Twitter, Musk understands that his platform has certain obligations if it wishes to maintain protection from liability under copyright law. On receipt of a properly formatted and submitted takedown notice, allegedly infringing content must be taken down.

A dispute that boiled over yesterday began with these two steps but ended up with the copyright holder having his account suspended, presumably by Musk himself or on his instructions.

The two people at the heart of the original dispute are both Twitter users. Since most tweets relating to the initial dispute have since been deleted or disabled, here we rely on archived and cached copies for evidence. Since one users account has been suspended, links to the account and its tweets are included but are likely to fail.

Adrien Mauduit (@NightLights_AM)

Adrien Mauduit (@NightLights_AM, Norway) operates the currently-suspended Night Lights account. He describes himself as a professional nature cinematographer, astrophotographer, and an Aurora chasing specialist.

A review of Mauduits recent posts suggests that his Twitter account is mainly used to post content he creates himself, usually videos or photographs.

Mauduits pinned tweet is/was a stunning short video dated March 4, 2023. Its described as a double solar storm punch that created a G3 (max) geomagnetic storm. This video sits at the heart of the dispute.

Creationist thinks evo-devo refutes evolution "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I love it when creationists decide to attack evolution by way of developmental biology. Yes, come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly. Our home is our terrible weakness, Im sure youll be able to frolic and thrive in our little domainheh heh heh

This fellow, David W. Swift, whose knowledge of development is maybe an inch deep and obtained entirely from information taken from basic textbooks, followed up by a conscious misreading of a few scientific papers with an eye to extracting only bits and pieces that support his conclusion, has decided that embryology is evidence against evolution.

It is quite well known that at a relatively early stage the embryos of a wide range of vertebrates look similar a so-called phylotypic stage and this is generally regarded as evidence of common ancestry.

What is not well known is that before this stage the early embryonic development of vertebrates is very diverse right from the earliest stages which clearly refutes their common ancestry.

Hes partly right. It is well known that there are embryonic similarites between vertebrates, and of course thats evidence for common ancestry. There is a lot of evidence for common ancestry, and that is one small piece of it.

Hes wrong when he says that it is not well known that early development is more diverse. Any developmental biology textbook that discusses comparative embryology is going to tell you that. We developmental biologists ALL know that. Its been a hot button topic of discussion for at least 50 years, probably longer. Mr Swift perused a select bunch of papers and just skipped over any that brought the topic up, so he could pretend he was the perceptive creationist who noticed, for the first time, a weakness in evolutionary theory? Such arrogance. Its especially annoying because he says nothing novel that he couldnt have found prominently discussed in the scientific literature.

Also, the known evidence that early development is a complex process with diverse patterns of execution in different organism does not refute common ancestry. The creationists seem unable to get into their heads that a short-sighted process driven by chance as a core mechanism, running over millions and billions of years, is going to generate complexity and diversity by its very nature. Observing that something is complex and diverse is evidence that an evolutionary process created it, rather than an engineer.

That doesnt stop him from expanding that claim into a whole tedious paper, published in the Discovery Institutes fake journal, Bio-Complexity...

McQueen: Flathub in 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The Flathub organization (in the form of Robert McQueen) has posted a lengthy update on the state of Flathub and its plans for the coming year.

So far, the GNOME Foundation has acted as an incubator and legal host for Flathub even though its not purely a GNOME product or initiative. Distributing software to end users along with processing and forwarding payments and donations also has a different legal profile in terms of risk exposure and nonprofit compliance than the current activities of the GNOME Foundation. Consequently, we plan to establish an independent legal entity to own and operate Flathub which reduces risk for the GNOME Foundation, better reflects the independent and cross-desktop interests of Flathub, and provides flexibility in the future should we need to change the structure.

Beans IN Toast Could Revolutionise British Diet "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Scientists are aiming to revolutionise British diets by slipping more UK-grown beans into our daily bread:

Researchers and chefs at the University of Reading aim to encourage British consumers and food producers to switch to bread containing faba beans (commonly known as broad beans), making it healthier and less damaging to the environment.

[...] Five teams of researchers within the University of Reading, along with members of the public, farmers, industry, and policy makers, are now working together to bring about one of the biggest changes to UK food in generations.

[...] This is by increasing pulses in the UK diet, particularly faba beans, due to their favourable growing conditions in the UK and the sustainable nutritional enhancement they provide.

Despite being an excellent alternative to the ubiquitous imported soya bean, used currently in bread as an improver, the great majority of faba beans grown in the UK go to animal feed at present.

[...] "96% of people in the UK eat bread, and 90% of that is white bread, which in most cases contains soya. We've already performed some experiments and found that faba bean flour can directly replace imported soya flour and some of the wheat flour, which is low in nutrients. We can not only grow the faba beans here, but also produce and test the faba bean-rich bread, with improved nutritional quality."

Standing Together: Resisting the New Normal "IndyWatch Feed War"

The US wanted Russia to attack Ukraine. So says Robert H Wade, professor of Global Political Economy at the London School of Economics. And then it brought in its wide-ranging sanctions regime in response. According to renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersch, the US subsequently blew up the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The result is that Europeans are experiencing an energy crisis, and Germany in particular faces deindustrialisation. The Ukraine situation is not just a NATO proxy war with Russia. It is also a trade and energy war inflicted by the US on Europe.

Although the impact of the war is acutely felt by Europe, inflation continues to increase across the Western countries, including the US, and their economies are in crisis.

While the sanctions and war are having an inflationary impact, they serve as convenient cover for the effects of a massive increase in quantitative easing that occurred in late 2019 and in 2020. The US Federal Reserve created almost a fifth of all US dollars ever created in 2020. According to economist Professor Richard Werner, central banks around the world also pumped more money into their economies during this period. He concludes that central banks are largely responsible for the inflation we now see.

Financial markets were collapsing in October 2019, and the crisis reached a head in February 2020 with a massive crash. Prior to COVID and then under cover of this bogus public health crisis, trillions of dollars were pumped into the economy and...

Three Women Discover the Americas Best Kept Secret: Nicaragua! "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Alliance for Global Justice sent out an invitation to apply for Women In Nicaragua: Power & Protagonism Jan. 7-16, 2023.  How did this nation close the gender gap by 80% in just 15 years? Three women who had met in the Green Party decided to find out. We were accepted as delegates on the brigade and flew in from California, Florida, and Virginia.

From the Sandino International Airport, its a short ride to Casa Benjamin Linder, a charming retreat graced with hammocks, a hot tub, and inspiring murals. Linder was a young engineer and activist, the first US citizen killed by US funded Contras in 1987 while bringing electricity to mountain villages. We stayed in the Rita Clark room, named for the mother of Jill Clark-Gollub who volunteered expert simultaneous translation.

Our first briefing began with BREAKING NEWS. According to a Gallup Poll, Nicaraguans are among the happiest people on earth! Despite being in the second poorest nation in the hemisphere, 73% always feel at peace, nearly twice the global average and first worldwide. Why? Read on!

Nicaragua has 6,733,761 people on 130,373 sq km with 153 cities/towns.

Becca Renk, our gracious tour guide, is from the US and has lived in Nicaragua for 20+ years, raising her children there while working with the Jubilee House Community and Center for Development in Central America. Our packed agenda went without a hitch thanks to her skills and the spirited cooperation of 19 fellow delegates, aged 10 to 80 from diverse walks of life.

Day 1: San Pablo Apostle Community Church. We attended a service and lunch with parishioners. Adjacent to the church is their school, and the Hugo Chavez soccer fields.

We saw churches everywhere. There are frequent religious processions. Freedom of religion is alive and well in Nicaragua. Liberation Theology was a crucial ally in the 1979 Sandinista Popular Revolution. However, in allying with elites and US capitalists, some traditional, dogmatic Catholic leaders brutally persecuted those who helped the poor and bucked the system. Their corruption surfaced again in the failed coup of 2018.  222 lawbreakers (including some former Sandinistas who were proven to have sabotaged the government via roadblocks, murder and even torture) were tried, convicted, imprisoned, and recently released to the US.

At least 15 killed in Indonesia landslide, dozens missing "IndyWatch Feed World"

At least 15 people have been killed, with dozens missing after torrential rains and landslides hit Indonesia's Natuna region on the edge of the South China Sea. Pictures and video from the national disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) showed landslides cascading through forested areas and dumping mud and debris on houses on the remote Serasan island. Bits of metal from torn-off roofs and fallen trees were also visible following the disaster on Monday. The location of the landslide and continued rain were complicating search and rescue efforts, the BNPB said on Twitter. Communications had also been cut off, it said. The Natuna Search and Rescue Agency's head, Abdul Rahman, told the AFP news agency that 15 people had been confirmed dead and 50 were missing.

Open source software could deliver huge time savings for computational chemists "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A new program can streamline the process of creating, launching and analysing computational chemistry experiments. This piece of software, called AQME, is distributed for free under an open source licence, and could contribute to making calculations more efficient, as well as accelerating automated analyses.

We estimate time savings of around 70% in routine computational chemistry protocols, explains lead author Juan Vicente Alegre Requena, at the Institute of Chemical Synthesis and Homogeneous Catalysis (ISQCH) in Zaragoza, Spain. In modern molecular simulations, studying a single reaction usually involves more than 500 calculations, he explains. Generating all the input files, launching the calculations and analysing the results requires an extraordinary amount of time, especially when unexpected errors appear.

Therefore, Alegre and his colleagues decided to code a piece of software to skip several steps and streamline calculations. Among other advantages, AQME works with simple inputs, instead of the optimised 3D chemical structures usually required by other solutions. Its exceptionally easy, says Alegre. AQME is installed in a couple of minutes, then the only indispensable input is as a simple Smiles string. Smiles is a system developed by chemist and coder Dave Weininger in the late 1980s, which converts complex chemical structures into a succession of letters and numbers that is machine readable. This cross-compatibility could allow integration with chemical databases and machine-learning solutions, most of which include datasets in Smiles format, explains Alegre.

The verdict was part of a preliminary hearing and set a precedent on how Twitter can be defamatory towards individuals and public figures in Britain (Wikimedia/Foreign and Commonwealth Office)

A British court has ruled that a tweet sent by the author and commentator Ed Husain had defamed a senior leader of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Husain, also known as Mohammed Mahbub Husain, founded the defunct Quilliam foundation and advised former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for several years.

In November 2020, Husain posted a tweet that claimed Miqdaad Versi, a Muslim Council of Britain spokesperson who leads the council's media monitoring unit, was "pro-Hamas and pro-Iran".

'For too long, there are some who have smeared with impunity [against] ordinary Muslims. This judgement puts an important stake in the ground'

- Miqdaad Versi, MCB

The tweet Husain sent appeared as a "quote tweet" in November 2020, which included a screenshot of a tweet posted by Versi, who criticised Conservative journalist Fraser Nelson on how his magazine, the Spectator, covered Muslims and Islam.

Husain later deleted his Tweet but contended Versi's claims in court and told the judge to read 15 tweets beyond the immediate thread as context. These included a tweet by British parliamentarian Zarah Sultana, followed by tweets from Versi, which criticised French President Macron and France's policies towards Muslims.

But last Friday, Judge Lewis ruled in a preliminary trial that he was "satisfied that the natural and ordinary meaning co...

A Visual Guide To North Koreas Fighting Vehicles "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Joost Oliemans and Stijn Mitzer

The goal of this list is to comprehensively catalogue North Korea's current inventory of vehicles and equipment. In an effort to streamline the list and avoid unnecessary confusion, civilian trucks towing military trailers and military trucks on which missiles, rockets or radars are based are not included in the list. If several configurations of a vehicle with one designation are known, they are added as such. The part within apostrophes refers to an unoffical name, such as the US DoD M-xxxx designation system (referring to the first year the system was identified). A year in square brackets after the designation of a vehicle refer to its perceived date of inception. When available, the range (of missiles) are added in square brackets. All vehicles listed are presumed to still be in use with the Korean People's Army. This list is updated as additional vehicle types are uncovered.

Eastern Congo Crisis and Rwandas Red Line "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

In the latest signal of escalating tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwandan President Paul Kagame described a recent lethal shelling by the FDLR, a Hutu-led armed group based In the Eastern DRC, into Rwandan territory as a red line.

Following the conclusion of Rwandas civil war and genocide in 1994, conflicts between the DRC (then known as Zaire) and the RPF-led government in Kigali began to escalate. The defeat of Hutu-led armed groups forced its leadership and fighters to seek refuge in the Eastern DRC to regroup and launch cross-border attacks to weaken the Tutsi-led government in Rwanda, with the FDLR representing the most veteran anti-Rwandan threat. The resulting violence and instability within the Eastern DRC provinces of North and South Kivu compelled a Rwandan-led invasion in 1996, with support from neighboring states Uganda and Burundi during the First Congo War.

Bertie Ahern: Close relations, Brexit misfiring and why a border poll wont happen even under a SF led government "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

I dont know if you listen to the Rest is Politics podcast, but they recently started a new series in which they interview someone who has played a leading role in politics or public life. Yesterday it was Bertie Ahern. The whole thing is worth your time.

But for those without the time, Ive clipped down to what I think are the most interesting (and from the point of view for future development) and the most important sections towards the end and transcribed them below.

One is the fact that for over a decade until just before Christmas no British PM attended any of the East West institutions set up under the Belfast Agreement. And the second is that anyone calling for a border poll must learn lessons from Brexit.

Alastair Campbell: Do you think these relationships Do you think it couldve happened in the way it did if you hadnt had the gelling that went on between you and Tony and Tony and Clinton and you and Clinton? There was a sort of gelling there. Do you think these relationships mean something?

Bertie Ahern: It wouldnt have happened if this was left to the process and to the system. Even with all our good people that we had with us, it wouldnt have happened. At the end of day it was that we worked together. Normally, in that kind of negotiation, Tony and I shouldve been adversarial, we should have been fighting our causes and lines. And thats what goes on all over the world and Ive been with a few processes since and you see why very quickly why they dont work. We were lucky that we got on well together. Can I quickly add that it wasnt just 98, Tony and I had to live with this till 2007 until we got the institutions up and running. It was that permanent meeting [scenario], at European meetings, you know, formal ones, informal ones, being able to go backwards and forwards between Dublin and London. I would definitely hold the world record of Prime Minister that were in Number Ten. No one could get near me Id say. About fifty or sixty times.

Alastair Campbell: And where do you think we are today? Were meeting on a day when theres been a shooting of an off duty policeman in Omagh,  as you say people saying all the right things but a worrying sign. Youve got Rishi Sunak trying to get some sort of deal over the line in relation to something that will replace Johnsons mess, and maybe just a feeling that were gonna have to norm...

Two Security Flaws in the TPM 2.0 Specs Put Cryptographic Keys at Risk "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

In-hardware security can be defeated with just two extra bytes:

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) secure crypto-processor became a topic for public debate in 2021 when Microsoft forced TPM 2.0 adoption as a minimum requirement for installing Windows 11. The dedicated hardware controller should provide "extra hard" security to data and cryptographic algorithms, but the official specifications are bugged.

Security researchers recently discovered a couple of flaws in the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 reference library specification, two dangerous buffer overflow vulnerabilities that could potentially impact billions of devices. Exploiting the flaws is only possible from an authenticated local account, but a piece of malware running on an affected device could do exactly that.

The two vulnerabilities are tracked as CVE-2023-1017 and CVE-2023-1018, or as "out-of-bounds write" and "out-of-bounds read" flaws. The issue was discovered within the TPM 2.0's Module Library, which allows writing (or reading) two "extra bytes" past the end of a TPM 2.0 command in the CryptParameterDecryption routine.

By writing specifically crafted malicious commands, an attacker could exploit the vulnerabilities to crash the TPM chip making it "unusable," execute arbitrary code within TPM's protected memory or read/access sensitive data stored in the (theoretically) isolated crypto-processor.

In other words, successful exploitation of the CVE-2023-1017 and CVE-2023-1018 flaws could compromise cryptographic keys, passwords and other critical data, making security features of modern, TPM-based operating systems like Windows 11 essentially useless or broken.

Sweat the Small Stuff "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Unsplash/JESHOOTS.COM.)

Im three months married now and part of this new life chapter involved moving into my husbands apartment. We live in a garage flat behind the home of a couple from church and Ive had fun the past few months turning it from a bachelor pad to a cozy home for two, plus a foster cat.

Becoming a wife has also meant becoming a homemaker, and I mean that quite literally. As the partner with the most flexible schedule, greater interest in housekeeping work, and generally better skills, its my job to transform this apartment into a home, which I dont mind. I could easily spend hours (and dollars, if Im not careful) at local thrift stores hunting for kitchen gadgets, dishes, and baskets. But thats the fun stuff. Theres also the not-so-fun stuff: wiping up spilt milk, washing dishes by hand (we have no dishwasher), and scrubbing the toilet. Some chores are shared and I am a firm believer in the honey-do list, but for the most part, keeping the home cute, clean, and comfortable is my job.

As Im sure you can imagine, its been somewhat of an adjustment, going from having shared chores with roommates and only having to clean up behind myself to managing a full apartment. Ill be honest that many mornings, my prayers revolve around asking for help to have a better attitude about my daily chores. There are times these tasks feel so mundane and I desperately would rather be doing something more important like, say, writing a Strong Towns article!

I havent had any grand epiphanies about the virtue of daily work (if you have, please share). But I do find meaning in the way that these little tasks make life easier for my husband,...

Struggling with debt can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are several ways out. Various debt relief companies work to lower your debt and eventually clear it, granting you financial freedom. They will come to you with awfully tempting offers. However, tread carefully. Do not let the desire to clear your dent make you fall victim to debt relief scams.

There are many cases of cons advertising debt relief companies to take advantage of people struggling with debts. In the end, they may leave you deeper in debt. With numerous factors to consider and decisions to make, separating scam from legit can be tricky. If you wonder is debt relief a scam, or is it legitimate?

Here is the truth about Freedom Debt Relief and how to identify debt relief scams.

They are Many Reputable Debt Relief Companies

Source: credello.com

So, are debt relief programs legit? Well, many organizations can get you out of debt. Generally, the debt relief company will put up an account where you will need to deposit a specified amount of money for some time. They will recommend that you stop making your routine payments as they negotiate to speed up the settlement process. The hack is to convince creditors that you cannot clear the entire loan amount. They will then use the savings account to start negotiating and the loan-clearing process with your creditors. Usually, debt relief companies charge between 15 to 25 percent of your debt.

Identify a Debt Relief Scam

Debt relief scams target individuals struggling with large loan amounts and low credit scores. Trusting a debt relief program without due diligence can translate to more money loss and a worse credit record. A legitimate company should take you through its debt relief process, expected outcomes, and fees, among other crucial details.

During your enrollment, they should thoroughly analyze...

LastPass hack caused by an unpatched Plex software on an employees PC "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The LastPass data breach was caused by the failure to update Plex on the home computer of one of the company updates.

The security breach suffered by LastPass was caused by the failure to update Plex on the home computer of one of its engineers.

Recently, the password management software firm disclosed a second attack, a threat actor used data stolen from the August security breach and combined it with information available from a third-party data breach. Then the attackers exploited a flaw in a third-party media software package to target the firm.

LastPass revealed that the home computer of one of its DevOp engineers was hacked as part of a sophisticated cyberattack.

The attackers targeted one of the four DevOps engineers who had access to the decryption keys needed to access the cloud storage service. The hackers installed a keylogger on the DevOp engineers computed and captured his master password.

The investigation conducted by the company with the help of the cybersecurity firm Mandiant confirmed the attack on the DevOps engineers home computer.

The attackers hacked the employees home computer by exploiting a deserialization of untrusted data in Plex Media Server on Windows. The issue, tracked as CVE-2020-5741 (CVSS score: 7.2), can be exploited by a remote, authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary Python code.

We have recently been made aware of a security vulnerability related to Plex Media Server. This issue allowed an attacker with access to the server administrators Plex account to upload a malicious file via the Camera Upload feature and have the media server execute it. This could be done by setting the server data directory to overlap with the content location for a library on which Camera Upload was enabled. reads the...

China-funded bridge threatens Paradise Reef in southern Philippines "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

SAMAL ISLAND, Philippines Its official name, the Island Garden City of Samal, tells you all you need to know about this bucolic township off the coast of the southern Philippines. Its an established tourist destination just offshore from the large city of Davao, and is known for its nature-based attractions such as beaches, waterfalls, a sanctuary for giant clams, and the worlds largest colony of Geoffreys rousette (Rousetteus amplexicaudatus), a species of fruit-eating bat. A favorite getaway for Davao residents as well as other domestic and foreign tourists, the island can be reached from the city by passenger boat for less than $1 in about 10 minutes. Taking a car across involves a longer trip by ferry. This narrow passage of water, home to the popular Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort, is also the site of a coral reef that runs 300 meters across and 50 wide (980 by 160 feet), known as the Paradise Reef. The reef hosts 79 species of hard corals, 26 species of soft corals, and at least 100 species of reef fish, according to a study commissioned by the resort owners. But a massive bridge project, meant to boost tourist traffic from the mainland to Samal, threatens to wipe out Paradise Reef if construction pushes through, according to marine biologists and environmentalists. Theyve called on Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to order a rerouting of the $400 million China-funded project to save the coral garden. This story discusses pregnancy loss.

Jocelyn knew only one way to live. Growing up next to the Manombo Special Reserve in southeast Madagascar, his family taught him from a young age to see the forest as a source of income. His grandfather had been a logger, cutting trees for timber and burning wood to make charcoal to sell. His grandfather taught his father, and his father taught him.

It was dangerous work. He risked landing in jail for illegal logging every time he ventured into the protected reserve. I needed to feed my family, recalled Jocelyn, who doesnt use a surname; the vegetables he grew near his house werent enough. He also needed money for health care. Once, when his wife was pregnant and fell ill, he sold all of their plates and pans to pay for treatment at a government clinic. She wound up losing the baby anyway.

Then in 2019, Jocelyn went to a meeting that upended his life. Representatives from an American nonprofit, Health In Harmony, asked villagers who lived around the forest: What do you need from the world as a thank you to continue to protect this precious rainforest that the health of our planet depends on? The answers across 31 villages were consistent: health care, job alternatives and help growing food for their families.

Jocelyns wife, Falinety, holds Kristy as the family gathers for an evening meal.

The following year, representatives from each of those villages gathered in a soccer field to watch as their chiefs pressed inky thumbs onto paper, signing an agreement that affirmed their communities would stop encroaching on the forest. In return, Health In Harmony began providing affordable health care through mobile clinics and teaching residents how to grow more food and support themselves without cutting down more trees.

Founded in 2006 to save rainforests and combat climate change, Health In Harmony may have stumbled upon a way to help prevent the next pandemic.

Researchers have shown that deforestation can drive outbreaks by bringing people closer to wildlife, which can shed dangerous vir...

Outside the field of African art "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Asking whether white people should curate African art anymore, may be outdated. Instead we should ask: what is African art now and does the category matter anymore?

alt
The Brooklyn Museum. Image credit Zach Korb via Flickr CC BY-NC 2.0.

In the last decade, US art institutions and museums have sought to hire curators to work with their historical African art collections, with varying success. In 2018, the Brooklyn Museum faced widespread criticism from neighborhood activists and on social media when it hired a white curator for its African art. That the position was part-time, limited, and potentially unrenewable seemed of significantly less importance. Two years later, Brooklyn Museum and other museums confronted another set of challenges against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter and a pandemic. COVID-19 placed financial pressure on museums to cut budgets, further halting efforts to expand and diversify staff, while increased public recognition of incidents of habitual police brutality against Black and Brown people renewed calls for museums curatorial and administrative teams to reflect the communities that they reside in and seek to serve.

It is in this context that I encountered an article, The Long View: Leadership at a Critical Juncture for African Art in America, by art  historian and curator of African art, Susan Vogel. The article was published in the academic journal African Arts, which is peer-reviewed and defines the field. Vogel is a curator, art historian, museum director, and professor with more than 50 years experience, who worked in some of the most prominent art institutions for the study and exhibition of African art in the US, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), the Museum of African Art (now the Africa Center), and Yale and Columbia Universities.

The main takeaway from Vogels article is her displeasure with the current standing and state of African art departments in American museums. As she states, there is a void within current curatorial leadership and management of African art collections that has resulted in African art disappearing from public view in the US. In the past few years there have been more than16 vacancies for curators of African art. Only five of these positions have been successfully filled; other museums have supposedly cut the positions permanently. Vogel attempts to draw greater attention to this reality, and to the recent hires, since few outside of museum studies o...

Arm Opts for New York Stock Listing in Blow to London "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Arm says it decided a sole US listing in 2023 was "the best path forward":

[...] Arm's decision not to pursue a listing on the London Stock Exchange this year has raised concerns that the UK market is not doing enough to attract tech company stock offerings, with US exchanges seen to offer higher profiles and valuations.

SoftBank Group Corp's founder and chief executive Masayoshi Son said last year he would probably look to the tech-heavy Nasdaq exchange for a potential Arm listing.

[...] "Arm is proud of its British heritage, and continues to work with the British Government," he said. "We will continue to invest and play a significant role in the British tech ecosystem."

A Government spokesperson said: "The UK is taking forward ambitious reforms to the rules governing its capital markets, building on our continued success as Europe's leading hub for investment, and the second largest globally."

They added the UK "continues to attract some of the most innovative and largest companies in the world" and acknowledged Arm's commitment to its UK presence with more jobs and investment.

[...] Russ Shaw CBE, founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates, said Arm's statement offered "glimpses of hope" for its commitment to its British roots, but Arm and SoftBank's decision to opt for a sole US listing is "a significant blow to the UK tech sector".

[...] He added Arm's decision "must be upheld as a case study for the UK Government of how 'not to do it'" - citing the company's sale to SoftBank in 2016 as a factor determining its US-only listing.

"Nations like the US and China that recognise the strategic value of chip companies would not have allowed such decisions to be made - then or now - and the UK must now endeavour to proactively protect its semiconductor industry," said Mr Shaw.

This is not possible unless it is planned and deliberately acted upon.  And where else than Chicago et all.

It is my belief that the only way anyone should be allowed into university is by successfully clearing the full STEM agenda and solid literacy in English in particular.  Everything else handily comes under trade school classification and that even includes most forms of computer programming.

We have the tools today for anyone to polish their writing skills to a high level.  And reading skills come with reading

Obvious this cuts the whole university MEME down to size and true research schools do fine as well.

The current regime is supposed to educate folks, but it is done with a cherry picked supply of texts.  How is this supposed to educate?  You are the one who educates himself and this is hardly encouraged.  In fact, the best that can be said is that the best thinkers get drunk and skip classes.

The bill that would give Americans a four-day workweek "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

It has certainly become timely to discuss a sensible work week regulation system.  It really needs to be about optimizing outputs.  We have in each week exactly 168 hours or 42 four hour shifts.  Not a bad way to look at it.  I also think that the four hour shift should be the prime unit.  I have already posted that our so called minimum wage needs to be set around a guaranteed four hour base shift that pays base costs.

Clearly we still have with this either five days of two four hour shifts or alternately four days of two four hour shifts and perhaps thgree days of three four hour shifts.  Plenty of flexibility and overtime can be in two hour addons.

The key goal should be four days on and three days off to fully recharge.  To this end we can have two three shift days in there.

The big payoff is that four on will fully drain your energy while three off will also fully recharge your energy.  Also a mandatory break period allows mind resting between shifts if planned peroperly.  This can be really important for all mind work because hte brain actually needs a short term recharge.  And no alcohol in particular unless you want to wreak yourself.

This is driven first by our biology and do understand any rules fighting it will smiply be gamed.  We have long since understood that letting workers run at their own pace is best and letting them keep up with each other while rewarding group performance alone.

The bill would adjust the Fair Labor Standards Act to shrink the standard 40-hour workweek in the US to only 32 hours. Employers would then be required to pay overtime to employees whose work exceeds 32 hours per week.

His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, CON, is unbothered by such fake news which come aplenty during electioneering period but it has become expedient to erase whatever cheap gains the opposition aimed to reap from it by deflating the lies ahead of the gubernatorial and state legislature elections on Saturday March 11, 2023.

James Manager Debunks Report Of Dumping PDP For APC "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

LAGOS MARCH 7TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Senator James Manager from Delta South has denied rumours going round that he has defected from the PDP to the APC in Delta State.

A statement signed by Elliot Otobo Ugbome, Special Assistant to Senator James Manager, the senator described the rumour as handwork of mischief makers which should be thrown to the dust bin.

This is to officially inform the general public that there is no iota of truth in the rumours going round that Senator James Manager has left the Peoples Democratic Party to join APC.

This is the handwork of mischief makers and it should be thrown into the waste bin.

Senator Manager as the pioneer State Chairman of the party, he cant and will never destroy the house he laboured to build.

He is the Father of the Party in Delta State and he will continue to play that fatherly role as was displayed in the last Presidential and the National Assembly elections.

He was one of the few Leaders who won his unit, ward and Local Government Area in the last elections and thats an indication that he is serious minded and a committed party man.

I passionately appeal to all his supporters and loyalists not to be deceived by that false alarm. We should all be mindful of the fact that the rumour mongering mill is well activated now to spread unfounded rumours as an instrument to confuse voters against next Saturdays election, the statement added.

But it happened in the public glare  as governorship candidates  of both parties go about appealing to the Obidients to vote for them in March 11th election. This is desperation taking too far.

How do you expect members of Labour Party that has Ken Peller as their Governorship candidate in Delta state to abandon their principal and vote for you?

Most embarrassing is that both candidates have printed posters with the logo of Labour Party embedded in it telling electorates that the Obidients are joing forces with them.

It was reported that the Delta State APC Governorship candidate Obarisi Ovie  Omo-Agege, along with his supporters and loyalists met with Obi supporters and earnestly begged them to convert their votes in LP to APC.

Former NIH Director Francis Collins Emails Reveal British Physicians and Scientists Group Recommended Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19 - Judicial Watch | 6 March 2023 | Judicial Watch announced today that it received 254 pages of records from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this included emails of then-Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Francis Collins regarding a British groups recommendations on the use of Ivermectin to prevent and treat COVID-19. Why childcare shouldnt be a job-linked benefit "IndyWatch Feed World"

The more that Americans come to believe that childcare is to be individually acquired through ones employer, the less reason to create a system everyone can access.

Last week, the Biden administration took the unusual step of connecting industrial policy with childcare policy. In order to qualify for large sums available through the CHIPS Act, semiconductor manufacturers must explain how they are going to guarantee affordable childcare for their employees. This is a dangerous wrong turn, not because companies shouldnt be expected to meet the needs of their workforce but because childcare should never be a job-linked benefit.

Is deprivation in the North fueling racism? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

Some depressing news for those who want to see a more diverse and integrated society.

A study commissioned by the RoIs Shared Island Initiative and carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute, (ESRI) was published on 6th March. The conclusion is that Northern Ireland is less welcoming to migrants than the South even though there are fewer of them. Why? Well there is a direct correlation between a positive view of the future, and attitudes to immigration, and surprise, surprise, people in the North are less positive than the South.

In the study, questions were asked around 7 matrices positive and negative, such as filling work vacancies, cultural enrichment and welfare burden and worsening crime. Respondents in the South were twice as likely to display positive attitudes to migrants compared to respondents from the North, even though 20% of the RoI working population was born abroad compared to only 10% in NI.

In both jurisdictions, the percentage of migrants working is proportionally higher than the native population. This is because migrants tend to be better educated and skilled. The resentment comes out of frustration over the future prospects of the native population and whether they feel any political alienation.

In the RoI, the percentage of people who think their lives will get better is 46%. In the North it is 24%. Again nearly twice as many in the North think their lives will get worse (13% v 8%). 21% of people in the South, think their voice is heard (by politicians etc). Only 10% think that in the North.

Some further explanation about the gap in attitudes comes from a separate ESRI study quoted by David McWilliams in the Irish Times at the weekend. The startling fact is that healthy life expectancy in NI is only the same as Sierra Leone and is worse than average healthy life term in India. It is 17 years lower than in the South (NI 53 years, India 60 years, RoI, 70 years).

Northern Ireland is one of the few places in Europe where the health and education matrices are going backwards not forwards. In NI 20% of 25 to 34 year olds have low educational attainment. In RoI its 7.4% for the same cohort. 93% of 15 to 19 year olds in the South are in full time education compared to 74% in the North.

Its unfortunate that the relative deprivation of the North is fueling racism and lack of tolerance even though NI is 95% white. Its also clear that politics is failing the people in North.

Carnivores attacks on humans are becoming more common "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We have always had a problem with carnivores and it is only in the past two centuries that we have realy suppressed their numbers.  Unfortunately they are now recovering, mostly because their food supply has also recovered.

The big problem is that we need to fully integrate our animal husbandry with our agriculture.  Venison, wild turkeys and Wild pigs in particular need to be handled everywhere.

Then we have carnivores who are all opportunistic hunters. Coyotes and cougars are a real danger to children who need to be trained and always paired with a dog if doing walk about.  Wolves are dangerous to anyone when they are hungry.  Do not run alone in the winter.

That should keep you safe.  To do better, study the animals habits.

It is still eary days and we need to do more to scare them as well.  .

Carnivores attacks on humans are becoming more common, and climate change isnt helping

Rising population has led to increased human encroachment on natural habitats, but climate change is also pushing some animals closer to population centers, experts say.

Flatpak Could Become a Universal App Store for Linux Systems "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The Foss community is giving yet another try with an app store for all Linux OSes:

Some influential people in the open-source community are pushing for the adoption of a one-stop app store for Linux-based operating systems. The store would be built on Flatpak, a popular software deployment and package management utility, and it could provide customers with the same user-friendly approach other popular app stores in the consumer market are known for.

[...] The proposal's main goal is to "promote diversity and sustainability" in the Linux desktop community by "adding payments, donations and subscriptions" to the Flathub app store. Flathub is the standard app repository for Flatpak, a project described as a "vendor-neutral service" for Linux application development and deployment.

[...] The universal app store proponents say that "a healthy application ecosystem is essential for the success of the OSS desktop," so that end-users can "trust and control" their data and development platforms on the device they are using. Flathub has been jointly built by the GNOME foundation and KDE, and it isn't the only app store available in the Linux world.

Alternative solutions like Canonical's Snaps, however, are sitting under the control of a single corporation and aren't designed as a universal Linux app store from the get-go. Canonical has recently decided that neither Ubuntu, nor the other Ubuntu-based distros (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.), will give their official support to Flatpak. Users can manually add the tool after installing the operating system, though.

Besides providing a universal app store for the entire Linux world, Flatpak supporters also want to "incentivize participation in the Linux application ecosystem," and remove financial barriers that prevent diverse participation. For this reason, the proponents are planning to add a new way to send donations and payments via Stripe within this year.

Message from Yaqui Political Prisoner Fidencio Aldama to the National Indigenous Congress "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Message from Yaqui political prisoner Fidencio Aldama to the national assembly of the National Indigenous Congress held on the 4-5 of March, 2023, in Tehuacn, Puebla.

Hi, everyone. My name is Fidencio Aldama Prez. I am a member of the Yaqui tribe, from the town of Loma de Bcum, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. One of the eight Yaqui towns which make up the Yaqui nation. A town that has stood firm in struggle and resistance. I carry in my blood, flesh, and skin this grand history of the Yaqui nation, which has for centuries struggled against extermination, violence, and territorial dispossession.

Today, more than ever, I have embraced the words of the Yaqui oath, those words that have been captured in my chest, that run in my blood. I have embraced the struggle and the history, which is the essence of my resistance and rebellion, which is autonomous, with ancestral claims of education, security, justice, and spirituality.

From our self-defense comes our self-government, because I am of the Yaqui Tribe, and because capitalism was born from the blood of our people. We must collectively build, defend, and exercise the agreements of the poor, as the constitution of our people. We must continue existing with self-determination and autonomy, to decide the manner we want to organize ourselves in our territory, and the form in which we want to construct our future.

This future will be governed by the following ideals: to serve and not be served, to build and not destroy. And, as I have always said: I do not attack, but rather defend what is ours, what our ancestors have left us. They have taught us to respect our roots, culture, traditions, and customs, but the white man, those allied with money, have intervened producing division in our communities. Even so, there are those of us loyal to the Yaqui nation, who dont bow before money, who carry in our hearts the Yaqui oath.

Im still here, a land defender of the Yaqui tribe, even though Im locked inside this prison in Ciudad Obregn, Sonora, excluded from my customs and traditions. I wont give up the struggle. Rather, I will...

Assembly Language 80s Minicomputer Style "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

In the days before computers usually used off-the-shelf CPU chips, people who needed a CPU often used something called bitslice. The idea was to have a building block chip that needed some surrounding logic and could cascade with other identical building block chips to form a CPU of any bit width that could do whatever you wanted to do. It was still harder than using a CPU chip, but not as hard as rolling your own CPU from scratch. [Usagi Electric] has a Centurion, which is a 1980s-vintage minicomputer based on a bitslice processor. He wanted to use it to write assembly language programs targeting the same system (or an identical one). You can see the video below.

Truthfully, unless you have a Centurion yourself, the details of this are probably not interesting. But if you have wondered what it was like to code on an old machine like this, youll enjoy the video. Even so, the process isnt quite authentic since he uses a more modern editor written for the Centurion. Most editors from those days were more like CP/M ed or DOS edlin, which were painful, indeed.

The target program is a hard drive test, so part of it isnt just knowing assembly but understanding how to interface with the machine. That was pretty common, too. You didnt have a lot of help from canned routines in those days. From Peep Shows to Webcams: A Brief History of the Adult Entertainment Industry "IndyWatch Feed World"

The adult entertainment industry has come a long way from the days of peep shows to the age of webcams. Jasmine Live is just one example of how technology has revolutionized the industry, but before we dive into that, lets take a brief look at the history of adult entertainment.

The earliest form of adult entertainment can be traced back to ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome, where erotic art and literature were common. However, the modern era of adult entertainment began in the early 20th century with the rise of peep shows.

Source: reddit.com

Peep shows were small booths where customers could insert coins and watch a performer behind a glass screen. These shows were popular in the red-light districts of major cities and were often associated with prostitution. However, with the advent of motion pictures in the 1920s, the adult entertainment industry began to take on a new form.

The first adult film, A Free Ride, was released in 1915, but it wasnt until the 1970s that the industry really took off. This was the era of porno chic, a time when adult films were shown in mainstream theaters and even received critical acclaim. However, the 1980s brought a crackdown on the industry, with the government enforcing stricter regulations and the advent of the VHS tape making it easier for people to watch adult films in the privacy of their own homes.

But the real game-changer for the adult entertainment industry came with the internet. In the 1990s, adult websites began to pop up, offering everything from photos to videos to live webcam shows. And this is where Jasmine Live comes in.

Jasmine Live is a popular webcam site that launched in 2002. It allows performers to broadcast live shows to viewers around the world, with the option for viewers to interact with the performers via text chat. This technology has completely transformed the adult entertainment i...

Introduction

The threads of our lives have been slowly woven together through meals cooked communally, organizing meetings, bonfires and late conversations, foraging, harvesting, taking care of each other, and, lately, mourning a fallen comrade and friend. We all came together to protect Weelaunee Forest: the trees, waters, people, and all beings of this land. We came together to Stop Cop City and the violent military occupation of police in our communities, especially the Black and Brown ones, in Atlanta, Georgia. We came together amid COVID, when we felt the loss of closeness with our people, knowing we had to find creative ways of fostering community. We have come together to build the world we want to live in, even as we recognize we are all swimming in the extractive and oppressive systems of colonization, white supremacy, and capitalism, programmed for convenience and quick rewards. We keep coming back together, gathering with each other, to live in the joy and rest and wellness of community care.

The topic of this piece is the Sacred Web of Abundance (SWoA). The larger Sacred Web of Abundance is the sum of the vast, intricate system that sustains all life on this planet. Your Sacred Web of Abundance is the place that you live, the ways in which it sustains you, and the ways in which you sustain it. We are here to be part of this web and invite in others who are on the same land. What we have found is that the Sacred Web of Abundance, with her billions of years of wisdom, is there for us, waiting for our gratitude, delight, offerings, rituals, and ceremonieswaiting to build a relationship with us.</p> <p>These uniqu...

Is the US Following Ancient Athens? "IndyWatch Feed World"

COMMENT: Marty,

Zelinsky has tried to portray himself as a military leader, cloaked in the symbolism of a military strongman. Gaddafi, Hussein, Stalin, and even Hitler come to mind. All were seen as ardent nationalists. Zelinsky did this to attract enormous weapons and capital to this country, ensuring that his face becomes the symbol of the military leader.

In truth, Zelinsky is a figurehead whose survival depends on outside assistance. Ukraine continues to bleed out citizens, while its military gets eviscerated. Even with the weapons provided by the West, Ukraines military was never of the caliber of Russias. A Heroic figure he is not.

The West probably bet the sanctions and outside pressures would force Putin to withdraw. No one counted on Putin to stand his ground. Putins determination to crush Zelinsky means his tenure is linked with his war record and battlefield performance.  Panic is now setting in. Zelinsky is as much a puppet regime as we saw in South Vietnam. It lacks broad support and like the one in Saigon, Kiev will collapse sooner or later from outside pressure.

Once collapse happens, military defeat means political defeat. Therefore, the West is panicked to raise the stakes and step in to bolster a puppet regime. The US entered Vietnam slowly, then suddenly. It now appears NATO is following this same process, first indirectly, now perhaps directly. They have turned Ukraines future into some kind of existential life-or-death battle. For NATO, that is certainly the case. Having squandered untold billions, their military readiness is now on the line.

Kennedy tried to block the expansion of the US presence in Vietnam and was assassinated for it. Johnson enthusiastically took over and then realized his generals, Westmoreland to be precise, had no real plan. Johnson lost by blindly following the military. Trump tried to keep the US out of wars and was ousted by a fraudulent election. Biden enthusiastically took over echoing Johnson. As with Vietnam, an unpopular regime with no support, Ukraine...

Record late-winter cold wave hits the western U.S. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The western U.S. is experiencing one of the coldest end-of-winter periods in the historical record, with too many cold records to list.

To illustrate, let me "warm up" by considering the departure from normal of the average maximum temperatures across the region (below).

Unbelievable-- in some parts of the region highs have been down by OVER 15F from normal.

Consider the average high temperature at Los Angeles for the same period.

You will not believe it (below).  The last two weeks were the coldest for the entire record, going back to the mid-1930s.   LA residents are probably staying in their hot tubs.

For San Francisco, the past two weeks have had the coolest maximum temperatures since the latest 1960s.

US is Losing Another War Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed World"

The United States has launched a proxy war, unconstitutionally, circumventing Congress and the American people no less the entire world. What must be understood, is that the Biden Administration, the puppet of the Neocons led now by Victoria Nuland, has brought the entire world to the brink of World War III and they have now begun the countdown to the decline and fall of Western Civilization
Who is Victoria Nuland and why has she the queen of the Neocons? Victoria Nuland has been one of the leading Neocons always advocating war with Russia. She is behind the propaganda that Russia is on the verge of defeat and that the Russian army is really dysfunctional. This is standard propaganda. They put out the same exact line about the troops in Iraq. This is to convince Americans that they can wage war and it will be over in just a few hours or days. This is the typical Neocon sales pitch to justify their endless thirst for war. They are trying to provide justification to rush in for an easy defeat of their target.
Besides the Neocons treason against the Constitution always manipulating proxy wars without the consent of Congress in violation of Section I, Article 8, there is also one huge very serious undisclosed conflict of interest and the Biden Administration should immediately fire Victoria Nuland and all her supporters within the Biden Administration to save the world and our nation.
