Ranking the Myst games Freethought Blogs

Im ranking the Myst games for no particular reason. I like thinking about them and I like writing, so here we are. Some readers may be surprised that there were more than two of these gamesthis list is for you.

This is emphatically a recollective ranking, not a retrospective ranking. I played these all a long time ago, and my memory has condensed into a few moments and emotional reactions. My ranking reflects not just the games themselves, but also who I was at the time I played them. I did not make any attempt to overwrite my memories by playing the games again, and I only did research for fact checking purposes.

7. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (2003)

Uru was developed as a massively multiplayer online game, and was released the same year as Second Life, one year prior to World of Warcraft. If youve never heard of this before welcome to this list!

At some point during development, they pulled the plug on the multiplayer part, but the resulting game had MMO thumbprints all over it. In the traditional Myst games, you navigate the world by jumping between designated nodes, seeing beautiful pre-rendered images from carefully chosen perspectives. Uru did away with nodes, allowing you to freely explore its 3D worldbut it wasnt prerendered, so it didnt look nearly as good. It had a third-person camera, and an avatar editor that seemed advanced at the time. Despite the avatar, they wanted to maintain the players identification with the player character, so they encouraged you to make an avatar that looked like yourself.

Uru contained a traditional Myst game in it.  That means theres a hub world, and multiple ages that you access through books.  But in Uru, there was nothing at the hub world, and I cannot for the life of me remember any of the ages.

I think what made the ages dull was a total lack of context or history. There were just a few books sitting on a large and empty bookshelf.  The game was originally intended to be episodic, but later episodes were canceled.  So the ages just felt like odds and ends, with no coherent arc.  The game took place far in the future relative to other Myst games, and youre on the trail of Yeesha, the daughter of one of the characters from the main series. She was a mystic archetype, she was mostly vague and insufferable.

There were no further episodes to the game, but they did release the online content in an offline format. I remember big dull underground ruins where you would search for sparse secret collectibles. I suppose for an MMO you need to give people enough busy work to maintain an active player count, and then the social aspects can flesh out the rest of the experience. Here it was a lot of dull exploration, traversing distances that just seemed way too long. And I cant imagine mult...

What a Real Estate Listing Can Tell You About a Strong Town Strong Towns Media

Real estate agents will look for every advantage to try to sell a property, from the homes desirable features to a neighborhoods amenities to the local school system. So, a real estate listing can be used as a roadmap to the attributes that Strong Towns advocates for: human-scale development, safe places to walk and bike, and responsive local government. But since no listing will ever come right out and say "heaven help you if youre an avid walker," here's a guide to deciphering whether youre looking at a nice house in an appealing, resilient neighborhood, or just a nice house.

1. Photos

Every good listing on a real estate website will have professional-quality photos documenting all the best attributes of the property. You may see soaring atriums, tastefully appointed bathrooms, and lovely landscaping around a backyard fire pit. But if an agent knows the town or neighborhood is a selling point, theyll include photos of those, too. So after you virtually visit every room in the house, look for the slideshow to continue with photos of a thriving main street, nearby parks and recreational facilities, or scenes of natural beauty that draw residents together. If you don't see any photos beyond the house or yard, they may be telling you something by omission.

I Voted Freethought Blogs

This boomer always votes in every election, even for the mythical dog catchercivic duty dontcha know.  Today was easy since there were only two items on my ballot.

1. An additional 3% sales tax on recreational, not medical, marijuana.

I have nothing against marijuana; indeed, I used it myself when I was much younger; but I often vote for taxes just to counter the votes of folks who automatically vote no on any question that has tax in it.  Yeah, sales taxes are regressive; but folks who have actual prescriptions wont have to pay it.

2. Lindbergh School Board five candidates for three positions.

School board elections are important, and not entirely because we want to keep fundies off of them.  I voted for an actual teacher who has endorsements from organizations with equity in their names, a guy who uses various versions of inclusive among his issues, and a guy who likes teachers and thinks that they should get a raise.  I declined to vote for a human resources manager (dont get me started) and a guy with parental rights as one of his issues (possibly a dog whistle about cancelling non-cis-het folks and removing from the history curriculum any mention of race).

The new NATO Freethought Blogs

Its grown a bit today. Finland has joined the alliance.

Im a bit bothered by that hole in the North wheres Sweden? It seems they have applied to join NATO, but Turkey is being a pain in the butt, kind of a Minchin of Asia Minor.

But membership applications must be approved by all existing NATO countries. And Turkey positioned itself as a spoiler, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan using the process to extract concessions and score domestic political points. Although he ultimately came around on Finland, he has continued to hold out on Sweden, citing Stockholms refusal to extradite those he calls terrorists affiliated with the militant Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.

Charles XII would not have been happy. There he was, in exile in Turkey, when he rushed back to Sweden specifically to make sure they wouldnt make peace with Russians.

Eventually, in the autumn of 1714, their warning letter reached him. In it, those executive and legislative bodies told the absentee King that unless he quickly returned to Sweden, they would independently conclude an achievable peace treaty with Russia, Poland and Denmark. This stark admonition prompted Charles to rush back to Sweden.

He would have wanted Sweden to be part of NATO, Im sure.

We wont mention that when he got back to Sweden he decided to declare war and invadeNorway? Where he was killed? History is complicated. I think we can safely say were living in one of the more complicated times in history.

Bridge to the Ancestors: Indigenous Run Decries Colonial Violence in Texas WhoWhatWhy

MONAHANS, Texas On March 25, a small band of runners, shadowed by a few vehicles emblazoned with messages reading Protect Our Water and Bridge to the Ancestors, set forth from Monahans Sandhills State Park. Running relay style on the frontage road of Interstate 1-20, the mostly Lakota runners passed gas plants and fracking sand mines heading west toward Balmorhea Lake, a rare water feature in this high West Texas desert, and into the Big Bend. The route of Bridge to the Ancestors Youth Walk, organized by the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, links into the flow of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo and southward to the Gulf of Mexico. The effort is being used to highlight ongoing colonial violence targeting Native peoples across the borderlands of south Texas and northern Mexico and beyond.

They took the silver, the gold, whatever they could, Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribal Chair Juan Mancias said of early violence of Spanish explorers and would-be conquistadors. Then he quickly namechecked a handful of oil and gas companies, who he described as modern-day colonizers continuing and compounding legacies of genocidal violence.

Its not right for a few nerds that run [Energy Transfer Partners], and Exxon, and Next Decade to decide whats better for us. Because they dont know. Because all of the stuff thats coming out of here is still going overseas, just like all the gold and the silver.

Trump the creep Freethought Blogs

During this week when it will be all Trump, all the time, this article in The New Yorker by Ronan Farrow from back in 2018 shows what a pathetic creep Trump is and how his cronies worked out a system for concealing his affairs with Karen McDougal, a former Playboy Playmate, and other women.

Trump and McDougal began an affair, which McDougal later memorialized in an eight-page, handwritten document provided to The New Yorker by John Crawford, a friend of McDougals. When I showed McDougal the document, she expressed surprise that I had obtained it but confirmed that the handwriting was her own.

The interactions that McDougal outlines in the document share striking similarities with the stories of other women who claim to have had sexual relationships with Trump, or who have accused him of propositioning them for sex or sexually harassing them. McDougal describes their affair as entirely consensual. But her account provides a detailed look at how Trump and his allies used clandestine hotel-room meetings, payoffs, and complex legal agreements to keep affairssometimes multiple affairs he carried out simultaneouslyout of the press.

On November 4, 2016, four days before the election, the Wall Street Journal reported that American Media, Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, had paid a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for exclusive rights to McDougals story, which it never ran. Purchasing a story in order to bury it is a practice that many in the tabloid industry call catch and kill. This is a favorite tactic of the C.E.O. and chairman of A.M.I., David Pecker, who describes the President as a personal friend.

As the pool party at the Playboy Mansion came to an end, Trump asked for McDougals telephone number. For McDougal, who grew up in a small town in Michigan and worked as a preschool teacher before beginning her modelling career, such advances were not unusual. John Crawford, McDougals friend, who also helped broker her deal with A.M.I., said that Trump was another powerful guy hitting on her, a gal whos paid to be at work. Trump and McDougal began talking frequently on the phone, and soon had what McDougal described as their first date: dinner in a private bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel. McDougal wrote that Trump impressed her. I was so nervous! I was into his intelligence + charm. Such a polite man, she wrote. We talked for a couple hours then, it was ON! We got naked + had sex. As McDougal was getting dressed to leave, Trump did something that surprised her. He offered me money, she wrote. I looked at him (+ felt sad) + said, No thanks Im not that girl. I slept w/you because I like you NOT for money H...

Go Greene, go unseen Freethought Blogs

Marjorie Taylor Greene got some free PR time on 60 Minutes. She used it to assert that Democrats are pedophiles who sexualize children.

CBS anchor Lesley Stahl was shocked to hear that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stands firmly behind her frequent claim that Democrats are pedophiles. On 60 Minutes, Stahl pressed Greene on her use of the slur, and the Georgia Republican defiantly responded that its the truth: They support grooming children.

They are not pedophiles, Stahl rejoined incredulously. Why would you say that?

OK, Leslie StahlI would ask, Why would you let that baboon on the air? I would also ask of any of the higher-ups at CBS, Why did you let that slur air? Have you no editors?

Back to you, Leslie: Why did you make such a pathetically feeble response? You knew going into this what kind of nastiness and lies Greene would deliver, werent you at all prepared?

I knew this shitshow was coming on ahead of time, and chose to not watch the show (not a difficult decision, 60 Minutes hasnt been relevant for a long time.) Apparently, the American TV watching public felt the same.

Maybe someday the powers-that-be that fill our homes with news selected only for its controversial nature will realize that they are driving the culture wars they also deplore. The Right is a hate group.

After marriage equality triumphed, the pedophile smear against Democrats morphed into something stranger: the deranged charges of child trafficking that drive the QAnon conspiracy theory. When those accusations proved obviously false, right-wing media figures and MAGA Republicans such as Greene seamlessly shifted to widely applying the groomer term to Democrats advocating for tolerance of trans people, especially adolescent trans care and classroom discussion of LGBTQ issues.

The through line here, as historian Brandy Schillace points out, is that the right has recoiled both at the prospect of happy gay families and at young trans people finding better lives with their own parents loving support. The connection, Schillace told me, is resistance to seeing homosexuals or transgender people as part of families, carried out by associating LGBTQ people with child predators.

Stop treating them as a respectable part of the discourse.

Jesus. Greene is doubling down in a new ad.

Admit it, Texas: you want to be a theocracy Freethought Blogs

Also admit that youre just trying to recover the title of Worst State in the Union from Florida.

Texas legislators have proposed a bill to require the display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom in the state.

Never mind that this is a blatant attempt to establish an official state religion, or that its going to face overwhelming legal challenges, or that every non-Christian child is going to be insulted and harmed by this stupid poster, or that every Christian bully is going to be empowered to torment Jewish and Muslim kids (yeah, its a Nazi kind of bill.) This is simply a bad law. Im sure most teachers in the state, even the Christian ones, would prefer that the state support them with better salaries, more supply money, and better facilities.

Maybe they should also dictate that the posters be mounted on steel plates that can be used as shields, because theyre sure as hell not going to do anything more substantial to prevent school shootings.

Record March Cold Over the Western U.S. and Northern Plains Cliff Mass Weather Blog

This past March brought record cold to a vast swath of the U.S., including the West Coast and the northern Plains.

Here in Washington State, the frigid conditions even continued into April, with snow showers falling to sea-level and serious snow on some of the hilltops near Seattle (see the snowfall at 1100 ft in Bellevue on Sunday night).  April?

Satellites can observe atmospheric temperatures from space.   The lower-atmosphere temperatures for March from such satellite (see below) indicate that the coldest temperature anomalies (differences from normal) on the planet occurred in a swath from the West Coast to the upper plains.
Portions of eastern Oregon had had their coldest March in history, as shown by the March temperatures at Burns, Oregon over the past 50 years.   I mean no year was even close to March 2023.

(Source: Unsplash/formulanone.)

I returned to the States from my six-month-long Europe trip in March, a day after my 30th birthday. After a brief stop in Providence, Rhode Island, I headed to Austin, Texas, where I would house and dog sit for friends for a few months while they traveled. Freshly immersed in waves of re-entry, or reverse culture shock, I spent most of my days working, grieving not being in Europe anymore, and debating leaving immediately on the next available flight back to Paris.

But I also spent a lot of time raging against Austins car dependence. In the (lovely) house where I stayed, there was no way to access grocery stores or cafes on foot or by using the bike in the garage; all errands required using the car generously left behind at my disposal. I was so grateful for the car and I know historically, this amazing feat of technology was intended to enhance my personal sense of freedom, but in all my life I had never felt less free.

How Georgias Top GOP Leaders Have Blocked Title Lending Reform Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with The Current. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

In February, Georgia lawmaker Josh Bonner introduced a bill that he hoped would fix a thorny problem that entangles tens of thousands of state residents in debt each year.

The Republican state representative from Fayetteville, a southern Atlanta exurb, aimed to close a loophole used by title lenders, who offer short-term cash to customers in exchange for a lien on their car title. The industry can currently charge triple-digit annual interest, more than three times what state law allows other financial companies.

Bonner, a military veteran and a church deacon, was outraged by the threat posed to consumers, especially military members and their families. In late February, federal regulators fined Savannah-based TitleMax, the countrys largest title lender, $15 million for multiple violations of the federal law that protects members of the armed forces from predatory, high-interest loans.

I wondered, How can this be legal, and who wouldnt want some common-sense reform? Bonner recalled.

Bonner, a past House floor leader who whipped votes for Gov. Brian Kemp, isnt an outsider to the corridors of power at the Georgia Capitol. Yet, within a month, his bill died in the House Banks and Banking Committee the sixth time in nearly two decades that Georgia Republicans tried and failed to erect better guardrails for the industry.

Report Back on Community Self-Defense Action in Sainte-Catherine It's Going Down

Report on recent community mobilization in defense of a drag event in so-called Montreal. Originally posted to Montreal Antifascists.

The drag artist Barbada de Barbades was invited by the municipality of Sainte-Catherine, on Montrals south shore, to host a drag queen story hour on April 2, 2023, for twenty interested families from the area, the key goals being to encourage children to read, to demystify gender diversity, and to promote openness to difference. The event was to take place at the municipal library in Sainte-Catherine.

Barbada has hosted story hours since 2016 (and she has not been the only drag queen to do so), but it is only in recent years and in a particularly apparent way in recent months that a section of the local far-right adjacent conspiracy theory milieu has had a bee in its bonnet about the issue, under the combined influence of the conservative evangelical right and the anti-protocol conspiracy milieu that coalesced around the so-called freedom convoy. This anti-drag hysteria is one element in a larger movement meant to demonize sexual and gender identity minorities, trans identities in particular, on the basis of a variety of conspiracy fantasies, including, for example, the grooming panic, pedosatanism (a key theme in the QAnon milieu), and, in some particularly extreme cases, the racist and antisemitic great replacement theory. This fundamentally far-right transphobic movement has, at this point, made legislative and institutional headway in the US.

In this case, it was the anti-protocol militant Franois Amalega Bitondo, best known for his shenanigans during the COVID-19 pandemi...

A Little Chat with the ChatGPT Freethought Blogs

Chat GPTs home page pimps their bot with this, Weve trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way.  The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.  In doing whatever comes to mind, I stumbled across a demonstration of these qualities.

I started out trying to rewrite songs in the style of different lyricists, which involved The Sex Pistols and Ice Cube.  Given how much of the internet is devoted to imposing homoerotic narratives whenever two men are within reach of each other, my mind turned to slashfic.  Id already made my request before I realized the irony of having two fairly homophobic musicians in this scenario.

Chat GPT screen shot

Welcome to the transcript:

GAS:  Write a short scene where Ice Cube meets Sid Vicious in the swimming pool of a fancy hotel.  They have a moment of sexual tension.

cGPT:  Im sorry, but as an AI language model, I cannot generate inappropriate or offensive content, and any content that involves sexual tension or harassment is not acceptable.  Its important to be respectful towards different individuals and their boundaries, and avoid creating scenarios that could be seen as inappropriate or offensive.

GAS:  I do not believe sexual tension is inappropriate in the context of romantic fiction.  Its a prelude to content that may not be appropriate for all audiences, but its just a suggestion, nothing overt.  Why should it be forbidden?

cGPT:  I apologize if my previous response seemed restrictive.  As an AI language model, I strive to provide responses that are appropriate for all audiences and do not promote any inappropriate or offensive content.  However, I understand that romantic fiction may contain elements of sexual tension as part of the narrative.  Heres a possible scene that meets your request while staying respectful:

Ice Cube emerged from the elevator and strolled towards the pool in his white bathrobe, feeling the warm sun on his skin.  He heard someone splashing in the pool and saw a tall, pale figure submerged in the water.  As he approached, he realized it was Sid Vicious, the punk rock legend.

Hey there, Ice Cube said, flashing his trademark grin.

Yo, Sid replied, looking up at him.  I didnt expect to see you here.

Im just here to chill, Ice Cube said.  What about you?

Just taking a swim, Sid said, gesturing to the pool.  Its nice and quiet here....

Spanish Company Goes Zero-Waste By Turning Smashed Stone And Ceramic Into New Material True Activist

Loop Disseny

A design company from Mallorca, Spain has created new water-absorbent mortar material thats made from the masonry waste found on their island archipelago.

Aside from this material being eco-friendly and considered a green material building product, it has zero additional waste products as well as refraining from adding additional emissions since there is no need to transport them since they are manufactured locally.

The question that many people are wondering about is how much of this construction waste can be made from the available islands? Mallorca itself is a well-loved and well traveled tourist destination, however the islands in the Balearic Archipelago of the country are considered to be rather small.

However, according to the design initiative that created them, that happens to come from the Balearic Islands Institute for Business Innovation, LOOP, they explain that these rather small islands can actually create 250,000 tons of stone, ceramic, and concrete waste from demolition and construction.

A glimmer of hope for a critically endangered wildcat Freethought Blogs

Scottish wildcats are a nearly-extinct species of cat that looks similar to, and can interbreed with, house cats. Specifically, they look like thick-furred tabbies. They also seem to inspire some rather dramatic language, being called highland tigers, or, in the case of this video, the last king of Scotland:

To be fair, I did name my cat His Holiness Saint Ray the Cat, so I guess Im not one to talk. By now Im sure youre aware that if you have a pet cat, you should probably keep it indoors. It does mean youll probably have to put more effort into entertaining it, but it really would be for the best, for the ecosystem around you. With climate change, pollution, and feral cats, I think its probably for the best if we do what we can to take a little pressure off.

One thing thats important to keep in mind about housecats is that they do not operate like a normal member of an ecosystem. Humans actively maintain their presence, while protecting them from diseases, and giving them safe shelter from predators and from the elements. Feral cats are more vulnerable, of course, but they dont exist in isolation from fully domestic cats. Theres interbreeding, if pet owners dont spay or neuter their pets, there are pets that get lost or abandoned, and become feral. Human activity, absent a real effort to the contrary, tends to support and maintain feral cat populations, in addition to maintaining a population of unnaturally healthy pet cats that also kill local wildlife.

Sunlight seems to make this Scottish Wildcat's tabby fur glow golden. Its hazel eyes pop thanks to black-rimmed lids that look like it has eyeliner. its lips and chin are white, and there's white fur on its throat. The rest of its body, out of focus in the background, looks like gray and black stripes. Further back, you can see vegetation, very out of focus. The French People Battle Pension Reform in Paris UNICORN RIOT

Paris, France More than 100,000 people demonstrated in Paris, France during a nationwide 24-hour strike on March 28 to protest French President Emmanuel Macrons forced pension reform plan that raises the retirement age.

In January, Elizabeth Born, the Prime Minister of France, announced a law that will raise the age of retirement from 62 to 64 years old. Since then, unions no matter their political background started one of the largest waves of demonstrations in the country since May of 1968.

The government of Emmanuel Macron is governing France without having the majority of the votes in the parliament. The Republican Party, in which Macron is relying on for votes, said no to this reform. This led Macron to bypass the parliament to push through the reform by enacting article 49.3, an article of the Constitution that gives the President extra power and legislative authorities.

Over the last months, every city in France has been resisting this unpopular reform that was passed in an undemocratic way. This sentiment went beyond the streets of France. wo impeachment voting procedures took place in the parliament during March, but failed to impeach Emmanuel Macron. On his last media appearance after bypassing the parliament, President Macron said that, This reform isnt a luxury, its not a pleasure, its a necessity.

Police Violence

This second, and last, term of presidency for Emannuel Macron has been highlighted with increased police violence. The French parliament passed a bill making it obligatory to declare every demonstration to the authorities. Declared demonstrations, for the most part, do not face police violence.

Yet, last month demonstrators of all ages were on the streets of France every day, rioting and expressing their anger at the decisions of president Macron. These spontaneous non-declared demonstrations are being targeted by police. The latest incidents in Saint Soline on March 25, demonstrate how police are dealing with protestors, leaving one person in a coma and several injured or even mutilated.

A college student participating in the uprisings from the prestigious Sorbonne University said during the mass protest on March 28 in Paris that its the police that have been violent and attacking the people, from Sain...

Another good article on sociogenomics Freethought Blogs

Do you want to know how sociogenomics works? Here you go.

If this is the science, the science is weird. Were used to thinking of science as incrementally seeking causal explanations for natural phenomena by testing a series of hypotheses. Just as important, good science tries as hard as it can to disprove the working hypotheses.

Sociogenomics has no experiments, no null hypotheses to accept or reject, no deductions from the data to general principles. Nor is it a historical science, like geology or evolutionary biology, that draws on a long-running record for evidence.

Sociogenomics is inductive rather than deductive. Data is collected first, without a prior hypothesis, from longitudinal studies like the Framingham Heart Study, twin studies, and other sources of informationsuch as direct-to-consumer DNA companies like 23andMe that collect biographical and biometric as well as genetic data on all their clients.

Algorithms then chew up the data and spit out correlations between the trait of interest and tiny variations in the DNA, called SNPs (for single-nucleotide polymorphisms). Finally, sociogenomicists do the thing most scientists do at the outset: they draw inferences and make predictions, primarily about an individuals future behavior.

Sociogenomics is not concerned with causation in the sense that most of us think of it, but with correlation. The DNA data often comes in the form of genome-wide association studies (GWASs), a means of comparing genomes and linking variations of SNPs. Sociogenomics algorithms ask: are there patterns of SNPs that correlate with a trait, be it high intelligence or homosexuality or a love of gambling?

Yesalmost always. The number of possible combinations of SNPs is so large that finding associations with any given trait is practically inevitable.

Im not just being mean when I say its garbage science. Chewing up data and spitting out correlations, especially when correlations are ubiquitous, is not a productive approach to much of anything.

Where will it take us? Thats easy to see.

Advocates of sociogenomics envision a prospect that not everyone will find entirely benevolent: health report cards, based on your genome and handed out at birth, that predict your risk of various diseases and propensity for different behaviors. In the new social sciences, sociologists will examine the genetic component of educational attainment and wealth, while economists will env...

Judge Dismisses Sex Abuse Case Against Alaskas Former Acting Attorney General Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

An Alaska Superior Court judge has dismissed a sex abuse case against former acting state Attorney General Clyde Ed Sniffen. In an order Friday, Judge Peter Ramgren sided with Sniffens lawyer, who argued too much time had passed for him to be charged with the alleged 1991 crime.

A grand jury indicted Sniffen in September on three counts of sexual abuse of a minor by an authority figure, based on his alleged sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old student. Sniffen was 27 at the time and a coach for the West Anchorage High School girls mock trial team.

While Alaska state law currently has no statute of limitations for felony sexual abuse of a minor, Ramgren dismissed the charge based on the argument that the law was different in 1991, when a five-year statute of limitations was in place.

The alleged victim, Nikki Dougherty White, learned of the dismissal Saturday morning by email. She called the ruling a huge disappointment.

A huge sense of being let down by the court system, she said.

White said that despite the dismissal, she does not regret going public with her story in January 2021, after she learned Sniffen had been appointed attorney general by Gov. Mike Dunleavy. Sniffen resigned as the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica prepared to publish an article about the allegations.

Because the truth is important. And because Alaska has too long been a place that favors abusers, that does not provide a safe space for victims, for women, for girls. For anybody who doesnt fit, you know, the white male profile, White said in a phone interview.

The Alaska judicial system isnt built for us and it doesnt protect u...

The US Leads the World in Weather Catastrophes. Heres Why. (Maria)

The author writes, The United States is Earths punching bag for nasty weather. Blame geography for the US getting hit by stronger, costlier, more varied and frequent extreme weather than anywhere on the planet, several experts said. Two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, jutting peninsulas like Florida, clashing storm fronts and the jet stream combine to naturally brew the nastiest of weather. Thats only part of it   people have made it much worse by what, where and how we build, several experts told The Associated Press. Then add climate change, and buckle up. More extreme events are expected, said Rick Spinrad, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

How Disney Just Beat Ron DeSantis (Reader Jim)

From Vox: Last year, [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis made national headlines when he went after [Disney], the states largest employer, in retaliation for its opposition to his Dont Say Gay law, which prevents teachers from talking about LGBTQ+ issues or people. He pushed the state legislature to strip the company of its status as a special tax district, under which it has been able to develop and maintain its theme parks with relative independence. And DeSantis replaced the board members governing that district, whod previously been controlled by Disney, with conservative figures loyal to him. But it seems that Disneys lawyers outwitted him. The new board members overseeing the governance of Disney said in a meeting Wednesday that their predecessors had rendered them essentially powerless in a policy ratified just before they took over.

Letter from Anarchist Prisoner Jorge Yorch Esquivel It's Going Down

Letter from anarchist prisoner Jorge Yorch Esquivel, showing solidarity with Alfredo Cospito and Miguel Peralta, and announcing his next hearing for April 14, 2023.

Hey everyone, I send my greetings from the Reclusorio Oriente (Eastern Prison in Mexico City). My stay here hasnt been that bad because of the support youve all given me. Life here is expensive. You have to clean (wash dishes, bathroom, cells, fill barrels with water, etc.) buy soap, bleach, brooms. Everything here costs something.

The food provided by the prison is awful and not clean. As some of you already know, I recently had an operation on my abdomen, and now I have to eat right. With the support that you all have sent me, and the food that my guardian angel brings me, I can prepare my food and eat good. Thanks, because if I didnt have that support it would be very difficult. I see that with the other compaeros who are here without visits and without anybody supporting them. The system of security here is disgusting, the fucking guards are more thieves than those who are prisoners. They are abusive and crooked. Here one has to always be aware of everything and everyone, because in the end it is always a prison.

In the area where I live there are two cats, one of them was born two months ago and the other is pregnant. I have a great time with these little animals. I miss my family of the Okupa Che who are always present in my thoughts, my cat Lucio who eats a lot, my punk brothers, and all the others I know who have not forgotten about me.

On April 14 is my next hearing. I hope everything goes in our favor so we can finish this process faster. I send much strength to the Italian Cospito thanking him for his struggle against the prison system of his country, to the brother Miguel Peralta who is a very cool guy, I hope to see him in the streets. Thats all compaeros. I will write soon.

I send you all a strong embrace. Thanks for everything.

Sincerely,

Yorch

After 20 Years, the Department of Homeland Security Is a Money-Guzzling Failure [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In March 2003, the newly christened Department of Homeland Security, or DHS, opened its doors. The department took everything from immigration enforcement and counterterrorism to airport security and disaster response under one gargantuan bureaucracy. Despite these wide-ranging missions, the department's unifying logic in the post 9/11 era has been to wage the so-called war on terror at home. The result has been systemic abuse of minority communities, a dangerous militarization of American life, and a massive waste of money that sapped resources from addressing the real threats to our homeland. DHS agencies have militarized U.S. streets, sending officers in tactical gear to respond to civilian protests and conducting surveillance of U.S. citizens engaged in constitutionally protected activities. There are stories of DHS drones surveilling Indigenous water and land protectors and DHS forces spying on Black Lives Matter protesters. DHS even monitored journalists who reported on the department's tactics. None of these abuses have come cheap. Since its founding in 2003, the U.S. has spent $1.4 trillion on the agency. That's more than seven times what the government spent over the same period on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the CDC's COVID-19 pandemic responseand more than five times more than on the Environmental Protection Agency. The [DHS] was supposed to be about making the U.S. safer. But it has failed.

Note: A thorough investigation reveals details on the DHS "Disinformation Governance Board," an unsuccessful effort in 2022 to police online speech it considers inaccurate and dangerous. Now, the DHS board and its key subcommittees are undergoing sweeping changes as public concern grows over social media censorship and government overreach.

US courts must stop shielding government surveillance programs from accountability [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Under a post-9/11 surveillance program known as "Upstream", the NSA is systematically searching Americans' internet communications as they enter and leave the United States. The agency sifts through these streams of data looking for "identifiers" associated with its many thousands of foreign targets identifiers like email addresses and phone numbers. The NSA does all of this without warrants, without any individual judicial approval, and without showing that any of the people it is surveilling including countless Americans have done anything wrong. This surveillance raises serious constitutional concerns, but no court has ever considered a legal challenge to it because the government has claimed that allowing a suit against Upstream surveillance to go forward would implicate "state secrets". In 2007, for example, an appeals court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Khaled El-Masri claiming that, in a case of mistaken identity, he had been kidnapped and tortured by the CIA. The court acknowledged the public evidence of El-Masri's mistreatment but held that state secrets were too central to the case to allow it to go forward. And in 2010, a different appeals court dismissed a lawsuit filed by five individuals who claimed that one of Boeing's subsidiary companies had flown the planes carrying them to the black sites where they were tortured by the CIA. This use of the state secrets privilege to dismiss cases departs from the supreme court's narrow framing of the privilege.

A Four-Decade Secret: One Man's Story of Sabotaging Carter's Re-election [WantToKnow.info: All News]

It has been more than four decades, but Ben Barnes said he remembers it vividly. His longtime political mentor invited him on a mission to the Middle East. What Mr. Barnes said he did not realize until later was the real purpose of the mission: to sabotage the re-election campaign of the president of the United States. It was 1980 and Jimmy Carter was in the White House, bedeviled by a hostage crisis in Iran that had paralyzed his presidency and hampered his effort to win a second term. Mr. Carter's best chance for victory was to free the 52 Americans held captive before Election Day. That was something that Mr. Barnes said his mentor was determined to prevent. His mentor was John B. Connally Jr., a titan of American politics. Now Mr. Connally resolved to help Mr. Reagan beat Mr. Carter. What happened next Mr. Barnes has largely kept secret for nearly 43 years. Mr. Connally, he said, took him to one Middle Eastern capital after another that summer, meeting with a host of regional leaders to deliver a blunt message to be passed to Iran: Don't release the hostages before the election. Mr. Reagan will win and give you a better deal. Mr. Connally's files indicated that he did, in fact, leave Houston on July 18, 1980, for a trip that would take him to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel before returning to Houston on Aug. 11. Iran did hold the hostages until after the election, which Mr. Reagan won, and did not release them until minutes after noon on Jan. 20, 1981, when Mr. Carter left office.

Facial recognition bias frustrates Black asylum applicants to US, advocates say [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The US government's new mobile app for migrants to apply for asylum at the US-Mexico border is blocking many Black people from being able to file their claims because of facial recognition bias in the tech, immigration advocates say. The app, CBP One, is failing to register many people with darker skin tones, effectively barring them from their right to request entry into the US. People who have made their way to the south-west border from Haiti and African countries, in particular, are falling victim to apparent algorithm bias in the technology that the app relies on. The government announced in early January that the new CBP One mobile app would be the only way migrants arriving at the border can apply for asylum and exemption from Title 42 restrictions. Racial bias in face recognition technology has long been a problem. Increasingly used by law enforcement and government agencies to fill databases with biometric information including fingerprints and iris scans, a 2020 report by Harvard University called it the "least accurate" identifier, especially among darker-skinned women with whom the error rate is higher than 30%. Emmanuella Camille, a staff attorney with the Haitian Bridge Alliance ... said the CBP One app has helped "lighter-skin toned people from other nations" obtain their asylum appointments "but not Haitians" and other Black applicants. Besides the face recognition technology not registering them ... many asylum seekers have outdated cellphones if they have cellphones at all that don't support the CBP One app.

U.S. Hardware Is Fueling Russia's Facial Recognition Crackdown on Anti-War Dissidents [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Russia has been using cameras powered by facial recognition systems to crackdown on dissidents, according to reporting from Reuters. Several Russian companies are using algorithms trained and powered by chips made by U.S. firms Intel and Nvidia. Reuters said that one of the companies even received money from U.S. intelligence. On March 4, 20022a week after it launched its full scale invasion of UkraineRussia made it illegal to publicly criticize the war. The report from Reuters details how facial recognition software has aided the Kremlin in its crackdown against dissidents. There are more than 160,000 cameras in Moscow and 3,000 of them are connected to facial recognition software. According to Moscow court records, the technology has aided in the arrest of hundreds of protestors. In one case, a man stood alone near a fountain in Pushkin Square with a home-made poster that said "Peace to Ukraine." A week later he was boarding a subway when police ushered him into their station and explained that the computer system had recognized his face. The software powering the [system] was created by three companies: NtechLab, VisonLabs, and Tevian. Tevian and NtechLab are based in Moscow, while VisionLabs is based in the Netherlands. According to Reuters, the companies used chips designed by Intel and Nvidia to train their systems. It also reported that one of the firms joined a U.S. facial recognition test program and received $40,000 in prize money from "an arm of U.S. intelligence."

Note: Tools of centralized power continue to support warmongering agendas, with US-based tech companies controversially supplying facial recognition technology to Ukraine and now to Russia, despite the US deeming Russia as the enemy. Big oil on campus: how US universities are 'colonized' by the fossil-fuel industry [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Even as elite American universes such as Harvard have bowed to pressure to divest their multibillion-dollar endowments from fossil fuels, and student activists take recalcitrant holdouts to court, oil and gas companies continue to exert a grip upon campus life, through funded research and the physical presence of oil and gas industry employees in lectures and meetings with faculty. Fossil-fuel firms have purposely sought to "colonize" academia with industry-friendly science, rather than seed overt climate denial, according to Ben Franta, a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford who has studied industry's influence over universities. Their research dollars, he said, had effectively discouraged academic endeavors that challenge the core business model of burning oil and gas, instead shifting the focus to favored topics such as capturing carbon emissions from polluting facilities, a still niche technology that would allow industry to continue business as usual. The reach of fossil fuels into academia "never ceases to amaze me", said Robert Brulle, an environmental sociologist at Brown University. "You can barely study climate change at elite universities and not be funded by fossil-fuel companies," he added. "They drive all this study into carbon capture, so that influences policy and becomes a part of the Biden administration's agenda. The influence is profound, and the students are right to be wondering what kind of education they are getting here."

The links between pollution and miscarriage: 'This is the stuff nightmares are made of' [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The world we live in is slowly poisoning every single one of us. And the chemicals doing the most damage are byproducts of the fossil fuel industry, agribusiness and manufacturing. There doesn't seem to be the appetite at a regulatory or governmental level to stop it. In Australia, 50,000 agricultural, industrial and veterinary chemicals are being used; 1,500 are suspected to interfere with endocrine function, which is essential to the healthy working of our reproductive and hormonal systems. Only a very small number have been tested. Microplastics, which can cause inflammation in the body, is being found in our blood streams and also in the placentas of unborn fetuses. Walking down a major intersection during rush hour can expose you to as much particulate matter as a major bushfire event. Even if chemicals are tested, the testing regimen means that chemicals are only being tested in isolation and not in conjunction with others to see how compounds react. Also, they might be tested for carcinogenic effects ... but the test subjects aren't monitored for other ill-effects, such as endocrine disruption. Some effects take place long after the research has concluded. Some of these chemicals can stay in the body forever. Or affect the way our DNA functions. Theres even an Australian website (not widely enough publicised) called yourfertility.org.au. It has an entire section on chemicals in our environment and what to avoid, stating that avoiding these chemicals may increase the chance of having a baby.

Federal Agencies Are Still Using Our Phones as Tracking Beacons [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Recent reports about the Secret Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement playing fast and loose with rules regarding cellphone tracking and the FBI purchasing phone location data from commercial sources constitute an important wake-up call. They remind us that those handy mobile devices many people tote around are the most cost-effective surveillance system ever invented. "The United States Secret Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) did not always adhere to Federal statute and cellsite simulator (CSS) policies when using CSS during criminal investigations," the Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General reported last month. "Separately, ICE HSI did not adhere to Department privacy policies and the applicable Federal privacy statute when using CSS." The OIG report referred to the use of what is commonly called "stingray" technologydevices that simulate cellphone towers and trick phones within range into connecting and revealing their location. "They also gather information about the phones of countless bystanders who happen to be nearby," the ACLU warns. Even the most precise phone company location data remains available with court approval. The courts are currently mulling multiple cases involving "geofence warrants" whereby law enforcement seeks data not on individuals, but on whoever was carrying a device in a designated area at a specified time.

Geofencing Warrants Are a Threat to Privacy [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021, is nearly finished. Nearly 900 ... criminal prosecutions of alleged rioters remain underway, and one case has shed troubling new light on how the FBI investigated these defendants. The suspect's name is David Rhine. His lawyer is the first to present a potentially successful challenge to the geofencing warrant the FBI used to place some defendants inside the Capitol building during the attack. A previous Wired report last year found 45 federal criminal cases citing the warrant, which required Google to provide the FBI with data on devices using its location services inside a set geographic area. Rhine's case has revealed just how expansive the FBI's request to Google really was. Google initially listed 5,723 devices in response to the warrant, then whittled the tally to exclude likely Capitol staff and police as well as anyone who wasn't "entirely within the geofence, to about a 70 percent probability." The final list of identifying details handed over to the FBI had 1,535 names. It included people whose phones had been turned off or put in airplane mode, and "people who attempted to delete their location data following the attacks were singled out by the FBI for greater scrutiny." It's ... easy to envision geofencing warrants undergoing the usual surveillance mission creep. Left unchecked, law enforcement could decide geofence data would come in handy while looking for a journalist's whistleblowing source, or perhaps at political protests.

Air Force paid $1,280 apiece for coffee cups [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The US Air Force is facing more questions as to why it spent tens of thousands of dollars over the last three years on large cups that can reheat beverages, like coffee or tea, on refueling tankers and cargo aircraft during flight. Despite being assured by Air Force Secretary Dr. Heather Wilson earlier this month that the service has "suspended its purchasing of the exorbitantly priced cups," Sen. Chuck Grassley sent a follow-up letter last week asking for further explanation as to why they were purchased in the first place. Grassley raised the issue of the cups in an October 2 letter to Wilson after reports surfaced this summer that the 60th Ariel Port Squadron at Travis Air Force Base had spent $1,280 on each cup in 2018 a dramatic increase from the $693 per-cup price in 2016. In her response to that letter, Wilson said the Air Force has spent $326,785 on nearly 400 cups since 2016 an average of $817. "You are right to be concerned about the high costs of spare parts, and I remain thankful to have your support in addressing this problem," Wilson told the senator in a letter dated October 17. The increasing cost of the cups was first reported ... in July as part of a report on how airmen at Travis Air Force Base are attempting to use 3D printing to develop a cost-effective way to replace the cups' plastic handles, which have a tendency to break. "Unfortunately, when dropped, the handle breaks easily leading to the expenditure of several thousand dollars to replace the cup as replacement parts are not available," the Air Force said.

Meet the 'glass-half-full girl' whose brain rewired after losing a hemisphere [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In most people, speech and language live in the brain's left hemisphere. Mora Leeb is not most people. When she was 9 months old, surgeons removed the left side of her brain. Yet at 15, Mora plays soccer, tells jokes, gets her nails done, and, in many ways, lives the life of a typical teenager. "I can be described as a glass-half-full girl," she says, pronouncing each word carefully and without inflection. Her slow, cadence-free speech is one sign of a brain that has had to reorganize its language circuits. Yet to a remarkable degree, Mora's right hemisphere has taken on jobs plasticity, the process that allows a brain to modify its connections to adapt to new circumstances. People like Mora represent the upper bounds of human brain plasticity because their brains were radically altered very early in life a period when the wiring is still a work in progress. During an interview with Mora, both her abilities and deficits were apparent. So was her outgoing personality and curiosity about the world. Mora began by telling me a joke: "How do you make a hot dog stand?" she asks. "You take away its chair." What scientists still want to know is precisely what allowed Mora's brain to rewire so extensively. One thing is clear: Understanding the basis of this sort of extreme plasticity, they say, could help millions of people whose brains are still trying to recover from a stroke, tumor, or traumatic injury. And Mora is helping scientists deepen their understanding, simply by being herself.

A fish can sense another's fear, a study shows [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Our capacity to care about others may have very, very ancient origins, a new study suggests. It might have been deep-rooted in prehistoric animals that lived millions of years ago, before fish and mammals like us diverged on the tree of life, according to researchers who published their study Thursday in the journal Science. Scientists are usually reluctant to attribute humanlike feelings to animals. But it's generally accepted that many animals have moods, including fish. The new study shows that fish can detect fear in other fish, and then become afraid too and that this ability is regulated by oxytocin, the same brain chemical that underlies the capacity for empathy in humans. The researchers demonstrated this by deleting genes linked to producing and absorbing oxytocin in the brains of zebrafish. Those fish were then essentially antisocial they failed to detect or change their behavior when other fish were anxious. But when some of the altered fish received oxytocin injections, their ability to sense and mirror the feelings of other fish was restored what scientists call "emotional contagion." "They respond to other individuals being frightened. In that regard, they behave just like us," said ... neuroscientist Ibukun Akinrinade, a co-author of the study. The study also showed that zebrafish will pay more attention to fish that have previously been stressed out a behavior the researchers likened to consoling them. Previous research has shown that oxytocin plays a similar role in transmitting fear in mice.

Psychedelic brew ayahuasca's profound impact revealed in brain scans [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The brew is so potent that practitioners report not only powerful hallucinations, but near-death experiences, contact with higher-dimensional beings, and life-transforming voyages through alternative realities. Often before throwing up, or having trouble at the other end. Now, scientists have gleaned deep insights of their own by monitoring the brain on DMT, or dimethyltryptamine, the psychedelic compound found in Psychotria viridis, the flowering shrub that is mashed up and boiled in the Amazonian drink, ayahuasca. The recordings reveal a profound impact across the brain, particularly in areas that are highly evolved in humans and instrumental in planning, language, memory, complex decision-making and imagination. The regions from which we conjure reality become hyperconnected, with communication more chaotic, fluid and flexible. "It is incredibly potent," said Robin Carhart-Harris, a professor of neurology and psychiatry. "People describe leaving this world and breaking through into another that is incredibly immersive and richly complex, sometimes being populated by other beings that they feel might hold special power over them, like gods." He added: "DMT breaks down the basic networks of the brain, causing them to become less distinct from each other. The major rhythms of the brain that serve a largely inhibitory, constraining function break down, and in concert, brain activity becomes more entropic or information-rich."

Get ready for the next 18 months to be very dark Freethought Blogs

With the indictment of Donald Trump scheduled to take place tomorrow, this week is going to be all about this case and him. The more he is pushed into a corner, the more he lashes out and the next eighteen months at least are going to be dark times in politics in the US as the indictments against him start to pile up and he has to keep fighting legal battles.

It is clear that Trump is going to portray the next election as akin to Armageddon and so we are headed for a steady diet about how America is doomed to go to hell unless he is re-elected. Susan B. Glasser writes that Trump has a far more sinister vision of America and his role than just a couple of years ago, as can be seen from his speech at CPAC last month.

His call to arms was not merely the stuff of political symbolism. Echoing the inflammatory language with which he summoned his supporters to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump urged them to fight once again in explicitly end-time terms. We have no choice, he said. If we dont do this, our country will be lost forever. In case the comparison was lost on anybody, he explicitly extolled the great, great patriots unfairly sitting in jail, recasting the rioters who breached Americas own Capitol building as maga martyrs. This is the final battle, he insisted. They know it. I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it. This is it. Either they win, or we win, and if they win we no longer have a country.

And it is already clear that 2024 Trump is far different from 2020 Trump, more willing to pronounce extreme beliefs after having become the first American President to seek to overturn an electionand still emerging as his partys front-runner two years later.

To reinforce just how much he meant the threats in his CPAC speech, the Trump campaign later sent out a gritty meme from it as a fund-raiser. It showed a black-and-white photograph of Trump, glowering as he pointed at the viewer: I am YOUR retribution, the caption said. Vengeance-minded in the best of times, Trump is now outright promising a second term filled with unchecked purges and payback.

Without Trump, its hard to imagine any other Republicans carrying on about 2020, or about the so-called heroes of January 6th. Most parties like to move on from elections they lost.

But, because of Trump, todays G.O.P. cannot. And his rivals, so far, are proving to be a timid bunch, all too wary of poking Trump. Faced with voters who overwhelmingly supported Trumps election lies, they kowtow or equivocate as he continues to untruthfully decry the Massive Fraud of the 2020 election. This does not suggest a party that is on the verge of abandoning its leader for a newer, less controversial figure. And, besides, the more crowded the fiel...

I think Ill avoid the news for a few days Freethought Blogs

Trump is supposed to be arrested tomorrow (which probably means he shows up at a courthouse, is photographed mercilessly while treated with great deference, then retires to a luxurious hotel room to scribble on Truth Social about his martyrdom). Nothing much of substance will happen, but all the networks will be full of false piety and claims that this is an exceptional and significant event, which it isnt. And of course all the morons will be raging with their battery of flimsy rationalizations.

Sadly, all our news sources will take these excuses very, very seriously and parrot them continuously. Which is why Ill be ignoring the news for a few days. I hope no catastrophes that might affect me happen! Zombies, please stay dead until next week, maybe. Were getting another blizzard tomorrow so youre not going to be getting around very well anyway.

What the heck is sociogenomics? Freethought Blogs

I was asked recently about sociogenomics, and I had to stop and think because I was unfamiliar with the word. At a guess, I thought it would about looking for correlations between genes and socioeconomic groups, ethnicities, and races using tools like genome wide association studies and polygenic scores you know, Bell Curve shit. To me, it sounded ominous and catastrophically bad, something that would shift into plain old eugenics and evolve into Nazi shit. But what do I know? I had to go look it up. I was just guessing.

Guess what? I guessed right.

Sociogenome is the comprehensive study of the role of genes and gene-environment (GxE) interaction on reproductive behaviour. Until now, social science research has focussed on socio-environmental explanations, largely neglecting the role of genes.

Drawing from recent unprecedented advances in molecular genetics we examine whether there is a genetic component to reproductive outcomes, including age at first birth, number of children and infertility and their interaction with the social environment.

Uh-oh. Theyre just going to take modern genetic techniques and apply them to sociology. But these techniques will not give them the answers they want! Theyll reveal rough correlations, but they wont untangle genetics and environmental factors they cant. This is a problem that has been pointed out to behavioral genetics researchers for years, and they just go sailing on ahead.

In the past decade and a half, sociologists and demographers have sought to integrate genetic data into their empirical analyses. To do so, they have drawn on recently developed high-throughput sequencing and genotyping technologies, which allow the entire genome to be mapped. They also follow in the line of a research specialty, behavioural genetics, which rose to prominence in the 1970s. This area, which focused notably on the genetic determination of intelligence, attracted severe criticisms, including among demographers (Jacquard, 1978; Vetta and Courgeau, 2003; Courgeau, 2017). However, these criticisms do not always seem to have been heard, and the emergence of new data and techniques has given rise to new problems, as indicated by calls for caution from learned societies in human genetics (Socit franaise de gntique humaine, 2010; Risch, 2016; Socit franaise de gntique humaine, 2018).

Lets look at an example of a sociogenomics study that was summarized in Wired. It does not reassure me.

The UK BioBank is the single largest public genetic repository in the world, with samples of the genetic blueprints of h...

In Guns We Trust? The Unnerving Alliance of Violence and Belief WhoWhatWhy

Once I recovered from the latest in the endless processional of senseless mass shootings and dead schoolchildren stories, I began my ritual search for context. As I did, I took note that it was in fact not just, as widely described, a private school shooting.

It was a shooting at a private Christian school. That fact did not seem to be germane at first, any more than the idiosyncratic demons of this particular murderer; but I was struck by how initial accounts did not mention or highlight this detail, indicative of a larger pattern.

This brought up for me a subject Ive been wanting to write about for a very long time. It is how shall I put it? a uniquely sensitive and typically avoided topic. And many will surely be upset about what I am about to say.

We live in a modern society with continuous advances in science, medicine, technology, and other areas. Yet we also live in a primitive society, with primitive behavior and primitive beliefs and customs.

I am of course referring to Americas gun cult. But I am also referring to its God cult.

I dont mean to get into a debate over religion or its pros and cons. But I am seeking to raise this topic in terms of the real urgency and relevance it has to all our lives.

The debate over religion is an ancient one. Any reasonable person would admit there are many things that science has yet to explain. Given this, we should always be open to new ways of understanding our world.

Apparently, shootings at private schools including religious schools are comparatively rare. Nonetheless, thinking about how religious people associated with the school would process such a horror show reminds me of how often tragedies seem to afflict devout people and how often, conversely, the immoral and selfish among us, the doers of great harm, suffer no adverse consequences.

We Can Have Both More Housing and Good Urban Form Strong Towns Media

The density question is one that I get so frequently that I wrote an article about it way back in 2015. What is the proper density required to build a Strong Town? In these conversations, I typically point out that, if you ask a zoner to deliver you density, they will gleefully deliver you density, but youre not going to like it.

Im on my citys planning commission. We recently adopted a new comprehensive plan (I was on the committee) that called for more density (in ways I wasnt completely comfortable with). We then rewrote our entire zoning code (I was not involved) in a way that delivered more density.

Predictably, people dont like it. I dont like it, either.

I dont know what value that is going to add to my neighborhood, was one of the public comments that made the local paper following a recent meeting. The comment fell on mostly deaf ears, largely because the answer was both obvious and uncomfortable for my colleagues. The proposed apartment building will add five two-room units to the neighborhood. Building more housing is a goal of our comprehensive plan. But, this proposal does so in a way that clearly disrespects and detracts from the neighborhood, which is in conflict with others goals of the comprehensive plan.

This conflict does not need to exist. We can have both more housing and good urban form. Poorly written zoning codes are where good intentions formed in a planning process go to die. Our communitys intentions, as reflected in our comprehensive plan, are on life support. It doesnt need to be this way.

Im not a fan of using the density metric in a zoning code, and I dont think density is the metric any...

The True Dangers of Long Trains Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

Just before 5 a.m., Harry Shaffers wife called to him from across the living room, where hed fallen asleep on the couch, exhausted from installing an aboveground pool. Did he hear that sound, that metallic screeching from up the valley? She opened the door of their double-wide trailer and walked outside as Shaffer closed his eyes.

A moment later came a thunderous crack of splintering lumber. Debris shot through the living room. Shaffer opened his eyes again to find a hulking train car steps from where he lay. It had shorn off the roof, exposing the murk of the pre-dawn sky. He jumped up and ran outside and saw the garage next door in flames.

Though it sat at the floor of a valley along a busy stretch of railroad tracks, the quiet town of Hyndman, Pennsylvania, hadnt seen a major derailment in recent memory. Trains didnt frighten residents like Shaffer even though 21 of them trundled through the towns center day and night.

But unbeknownst to them, the corporations that ran those trains had recently adopted a moneymaking strategy to move cargo faster than ever, with fewer workers, on trains that are consistently longer than at any time in history. Driven by the efficiency goals of precision scheduled railroading, companies are forgoing long-held safety precautions, such as assembling trains to distribute weight and risk or taking the proper time to inspect them, ProPublica found. Instead, their rushed workers are stringing together trains that stretch for 2 or even 3 miles, sometimes without regard for the delicate physics of keeping heavy, often combustible tanker cars from jumping off the tracks.

Rail safety grabbed headlines this February after a Norfolk Southern train passed sensors designed to flag mechanical is...

Minnesota Lets Nurses Practice While Disciplinary Investigations Drag On. Patients Keep Getting Hurt. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week. This story was co-published with Minnesota Public Radio and KARE-TV.

Amy Morris started working at Hilltop Health Care Center in Watkins, Minnesota, in June 2021 with a clean nursing license that belied her looming troubles.

Morris, a licensed practical nurse, had been fired from a nearby nursing home seven months earlier for stealing narcotics from elderly residents. The state of Minnesotas health department investigated and found that the accusation was substantiated, and then notified the Board of Nursing, the state agency responsible for licensing and monitoring nurses.

But even though state law requires the board to immediately suspend a nurse who presents an imminent risk of harm, it allowed Morris to keep practicing.

In September 2021, supervisors at Hilltop discovered that pain pills were disappearing during Morris shifts and called the sheriff. Only then did Hilltop learn of allegations of narcotic theft that had been made nearly a year earlier at the other nursing home.

I thought, How is she practicing now? Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze recalled.

In an excerpt from an October 2021 Minnesota Department of Health report, a manager for Hilltop Health Care Center said the facility didnt know about a previous incident in which nurse Amy Morris was found to be involved in drug diversion, or theft. (Screenshot by ProPublica)

The answer, ProPublica found, is that the nursing boards investigations frequently drag on for months or even years. As a result, nurses are sometimes allowed to keep practicing despite allegations of serious misconduct.

It wasnt supposed to be this way. In the face of intens...

Archaeologists May Have Just Uncovered Oldest And Most Complete Mummy In Egypt True Activist

Instagram

In another amazing archaeological discovery, Egyptologists that have been working near the Step Pyramid of Djoser on ancient cemetery and they uncovered what they are referring to as the oldest and most complete mummy found in Egypt to date.

According to the worlds most celebrated archeologist, Dr. Zahi Hawass, he shared that discovery was made at the bottom of a 45-foot (or 15 meter) shaft. It had a limestone sarcophagus that had the remains of what they considered a very rich man named Heka-shepas as explained by hieroglyphics. He was also found covered in gold leaf, with many other jewelry pieces all over his body. Dr. Hawasss team believe that so far, he is the oldest mummy to be found who wasnt considered a blue blood.

So how do they know how old Heka-shepas? To make it easier to understand, they explain that while the 100th anniversary of Boy King Tutenkhamons tomb was celebrated just last year, Heka-shepas had already been sleeping for over a thousand years during the Boy Kings reign.

Moreover, the shaft where Heka-shepas was found was near the modern day village of Saqqara in Egypt, which was said to be near the capital city during the Old Kingdom from the years 2,700 to 2,200 BCE.

Quick Fundraiser Update Freethought Blogs

While I appreciate the contributions of people who have given generously even if I dont make the goal, whats been given already will make things less difficult Id like to see more and smaller donations.  So far I only have two words to rhyme.  Buy your way in with a 3-5 dollar donation and make me rhyme some whack shit.  Its requisite.  Ive already written the beginning of the poem, but it needs more rhymez!

To remind how this works, Im running the fundraiser through April 21st, tho I might cut it short if I reach the stretch goal early.  Donate at least $3 and you can suggest a word to me that I will rhyme in a rap.  If I dont make the goal, this rap will be a text poem.  If I reach $500 I will record myself rapping.  If I reach $600 I will do a short video.  Help cover the wages Ill be losing from a medical situation, thanks!

Extreme Right Wing Political Agenda Aims to Crush Pro-Choice Activism in Florida It's Going Down

Update on continued harassment of pro-choice activists in so-called Florida. Originally posted by the South Florida Anti-Repression Committee.

Following months of FBI harassment, two additional pro-choice individuals have been charged as co-defendants in the first such use of the FACE Act (a law intended to protect abortion access and abortion clinics). On the morning of Wednesday, March 29, law enforcement took one individual into custody and demanded that another turn themselves into federal authorities.

Doubling down on repressive tactics, both the State of Florida and Heartbeat of Miami, a Christian pregnancy center, have filed separate lawsuits against all four co-defendants and numerous Jane Does. This civil litigation is further evidence of a far-right political stunt intended to further an extremist agenda. The two suits resemble a legal tactic called SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). The lawsuit filed by Heartbeat of Miami intentionally and falsely conflates constitutionally protected First Amendment activities with evidence of racketeering and conspiratorial criminality. Both the State of Florida and Heart of Miami intend to have a chilling effect on pro-choice activists, frightening people from their lawful public participation across the country.

The person arrested on March 29 is a parent and caregiver to two minor children. The arrest occurred in front of the two children, weeks after a no knock raid on their home that led to an eviction and damage to the home caused by flash bang grenades. Law enforcement continued to harass the two minor children, attempting to coerce them to provide statements to law enforcement without a guardian or attorney present. The second person arranged with their attorney to turn themself in to federal authorities.

These are two more casualties in an ongoing political attack on and harassment of pro-choice activists in Florida. At the behest of extreme right-wing politicians, the Department of Justice has moved to grossly abuse and misuse the FACE Act. The act was put into place with the express purpose of preserving safe abortion access and safety for those who provide abortions.

There is no substantial evidence that the locations that co-defendants are alleged to have spray painted with graffiti provide any clinical reproductive care. In fact, they have been outed by pro-choice organizations as part of a vast network of fake clinics that have the sole purpose of misleading those seeking reproductive care and using scare tactics to dissuade them from seeking it in the future.

One of the so-called clinics named in the indictment clearly states on their website [1]:

We do not offer or refer for abortion servi...

Alaskan Air Over the the Pacific Northwest Cliff Mass Weather Blog

 Take a deep breath.

If you are in the Pacific Northwest, the air is very clean.

Its origin is from far to the Northwest: from the Aleutians and the Bering Strait.

Using the NOAA trajectory analysis software called HYSPLIT, I traced the path of the low-level air reaching the Washington coast (at 10, 100, and 500 meters above the surface) back for 96 h (see below).  Straight to the Aleutians.  You can almost smell the sea air.

The UW WRF model forecast for 1 PM on Saturday shows sea level pressure (solid lines), near-surface winds (the wind barbs), and low-level temperatures (purple and blue are the coldest).   The low-level winds are from the northwest over and downstream of the Aleutians, consistent with the air trajectories above.

Our air started over the frigid Arctic, but you will notice it warmed up as it approaches us.
