Central Bank Digital Currencies Are About Control They Should Be Stopped [WantToKnow.info: All News]

I participated in an online forum called US CBDCA Disaster in the making? We had a very productive discussion about the policy aspect of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). I believe that the Fed should not launch a CBDC. Ever. And I think that Congress should amend the Federal Reserve Act, just to be on the safe side. I want to distinguish between a wholesale CBDC and retail CBDC. With a wholesale CBDC, banks can electronically transact with each other using a liability of the central bank. That is essentially what banks do now. But retail CBDCs are another animal altogether. Retail CBDCs allow members of the general public to make electronic payments of all kinds with a liability of the central bank. This featuremaking electronic transactions using a liability of the Federal Reserveis central to why Congress should make sure that the Fed never issues a retail CBDC. The problem is that the federal government, not privately owned commercial banks, would be responsible for issuing deposits. And while this fact might seem like a feature instead of bug, it's a major problem for anything that resembles a free society. The problem is that there is no limit to the level of control that the government could exert over people if money is purely electronic and provided directly by the government. A CBDC would give federal officials full control over the money going intoand coming out ofevery person's account. This level of government control is not compatible with economic or political freedom.

119K people hurt by riot-control weapons since 2015 [WantToKnow.info: All News]

More than 119,000 people have been injured by tear gas and other chemical irritants around the world since 2015 and some 2,000 suffered injuries from "less lethal" impact projectiles, according to a report released Wednesday. Physicians for Human Rights and the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations, which produced the report, called it "the most comprehensive study on crowd-control weapons to date." The report on casualties from a largely unregulated industry cites an alarming evolution of crowd-control devices into more powerful and indiscriminate designs and deployment, including dropping tear gas from drones. Some of the injuries were fatal but it was impossible from the data to estimate the total number of deaths, said the report's lead author, Rohini Haar. The vast majority of the data comes from cases in which a person came to an emergency room with injuries from crowd-control weapons and the attending doctor or hospital staff made the effort to document it, Haar said. Protesters have been blinded and suffered brain damage from beanbag rounds. In November, the city of Portland reached a $250,000 settlement with five demonstrators in a federal lawsuit over police use of tear gas and other crowd-control devices during racial justice protests. But last month, a federal judge threw out an excessive force claim against an unnamed federal agent who fired an impact munition at the forehead of protester Donavan La Bella, fracturing his skull.

The FBI Just Admitted It Bought US Location Data [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged for the first time that it purchased US location data rather than obtaining a warrant. The disclosure came today during a US Senate hearing. Senator Ron Wyden ... put the question of the bureau's use of commercial data to its director, Christopher Wray: "Does the FBI purchase US phone-geolocation information?" Wray said his agency was not currently doing so. "To my knowledge, we do not currently purchase commercial database information that includes location data derived from internet advertising," Wray said. "I understand that we previouslyas in the pastpurchased some such information for a specific national security pilot project. But that's not been active for some time." In its landmark Carpenter v. United States decision, the Supreme Court held that government agencies accessing historical location data without a warrant were violating the Fourth Amendment's guarantee against unreasonable searches. The decision left open a glaring loophole that allows the government to simply purchase whatever it cannot otherwise legally obtain. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Defense Intelligence Agency are among the list of federal agencies known to have taken advantage of this loophole. The Department of Homeland Security ... purchased the geolocations of millions of Americans from private marketing firms. The data were derived from ... benign sources, such as mobile games and weather apps.

Mapping Project Reveals Locations of U.S. Border Surveillance Towers [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The precise locations of the U.S. government's high-tech surveillance towers along the U.S-Mexico border are being made public for the first time as part of a mapping project by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. While the Department of Homeland Security's investment of more than a billion dollars into a so-called virtual wall between the U.S. and Mexico is a matter of public record, the government does not disclose where these towers are located, despite privacy concerns of residents of both countries and the fact that individual towers are plainly visible to observers. The surveillance tower map is the result of a year's work steered by EFF Director of Investigations Dave Maass. As border surveillance towers have multiplied across the southern border, so too have they become increasingly sophisticated, packing a panoply of powerful cameras, microphones, lasers, radar antennae, and other sensors. Companies like Anduril and Google have reaped major government paydays by promising to automate the border-watching process with migrant-detecting artificial intelligence. Opponents of these modern towers, bristling with always-watching sensors, argue the increasing computerization of border security will lead inevitably to the dehumanization of an already thoroughly dehumanizing undertaking. Nobody can say for certain how many people have died attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in the recent age of militarization and surveillance. Researchers estimate that the minimum is at least 10,000 dead.

Note: As the article states, the Department of Homeland Security was "the largest reorganization of the federal government since the creation of the CIA and the Defense Department," and has resulted in U.S. taxpayers funding corrupt agendas that have led to massive human rights abuses. Investment fund links to Atlanta police and 'Cop City' project revealed [WantToKnow.info: All News]

A new investigation has uncovered connections between private equity firms and the contentious development of a sprawling police and fire service training complex in Atlanta known as "Cop City" and the police force which fatally shot an environmental activist. Private equity refers to an opaque form of financing away from public markets in which funds and investors manage money for wealthy individuals and institutional investors. Research shared exclusively with the Guardian details links between Roark Capital, an Atlanta-based private equity firm ... and a corporate backer of the Atlanta police foundation (APF). APF ... is raising $60m from corporate funders to build Cop City in the Atlanta forest previously earmarked for a public park. The APF has helped Atlanta become the most surveilled city in the US in large part thanks to a program called Operation Shield. Operation Shield currently boasts more than 12,800 private and public interconnected cameras monitored by the police. The private equity industry manages about $11tn globally. Yet unlike banks and other publicly listed companies, private equity firms are exempt from most financial disclosure rules, making it extremely difficult to track their assets or risks. It means people such as firefighters, nurses and teachers whose pensions are invested in private equity funds have little way of knowing if their retirement nest egg is financing police surveillance equipment, defence contractors, hospitals or coal plants.

'Here it is better not to be born': Cobalt mining for Big Tech is driving child labor, deaths in the Congo [WantToKnow.info: All News]

During one of his many visits to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Siddharth Kara ... met a young woman sifting dirt for traces of cobalt. Priscille told him she had suffered two miscarriages and that her husband, a fellow "artisanal" miner, died of a respiratory disease. It is just one of many devastating personal accounts in Cobalt Red, a detailed expos into the hidden world of small-scale cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The "quaint" moniker of artisanal mining, Mr. Kara points out, belies a brutal industry where hundreds of thousands of men, women and children dig with bare hands and basic tools in toxic, perilous pits, eking out an existence on the bottom rung of the global supply chain. The miners are the first step in the race for precious metals and minerals by some of the world's most powerful companies. If you own a smartphone, tablet, laptop, e-scooter, [or] electric vehicle ... then it is a system in which you are unwittingly complicit. Around 75 per cent of the world's cobalt is mined in the DRC. The rare, silvery metal is an essential component to every lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Congolese miners ... have experienced life-changing injuries, sexual assault, physical violence, corruption, displacement and abject poverty. Major tech and EV companies extol commitments to human rights, zero-tolerance for child labor, and clean supply chains. Mr. Kara described these statements as "utterly inconsistent" with what's happening on the ground.

W.H.O. Do You Trust? [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Trust in public health has been shatteredhalf of America has lost faith in the scientific community altogether. Our current government is doubling down on World Health Organization (WHO) decrees that directly circumvent public oversight. The WHO has drafted a new global Pandemic Accord. The U.S. ambassador to the WHO, Pamela Hamamoto, on February 27 imprudently promised "The United States is committed to the Pandemic Accord." This comes immediately after the exposure of yet another disgrace undermining trust in public health institutions. It turned out the February 2020 Lancet article calling the lab origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus a "conspiracy theory" was itself the true conspiracy, contrived behind closed doors contemporaneously with a March 2020 publication in Nature. If that coordinated media campaign was designed to conceal malfeasance by Drs. Francis Collins and Anthony Fauciwho, as leaders of America's National Institutes of Health, reportedly sent American tax dollars to fund China's dangerous gain-of-function research and circumvent Obama administration-introduced restrictionswe may be witnessing the deadliest cover-up scandal in history. News media are also beginning to acknowledge facts that refute the original reasons behind lockdowns. Despite protestations to the contrary, all signers of the Pandemic Accord clearly relinquish critical autonomy to the WHO. Most ominous is that WHO defines "public health emergency" on its own terms.

America's COVID Response Was Based on Lies [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Almost all of America's leaders have gradually pulled back their COVID mandates, requirements, and closureseven in states like California, which had imposed the most stringent and longest-lasting restrictions on the public. At the same time, the media has been gradually acknowledging the ongoing release of studies that totally refute the purported reasons behind those restrictions. This overt reversal is falsely portrayed as "learned" or "new evidence." Little acknowledgment of error is to be found. We have seen no public apology for promulgating false information, or for the vilification and delegitimization of policy experts and medical scientists like myself who spoke out correctly about data, standard knowledge about viral infections and pandemics, and fundamental biology. History's biggest public health policy failure came at the hands of those who recommended the lockdowns and those who implemented them, not those who advised otherwise. Lies were told. Those lies harmed the public. Those lies were directly contrary to the evidence, to decades of knowledge on viral pandemics, and to long-established fundamental biology. To ensure that this never happens again, government leaders, power-driven officials, and influential academics and advisors often harboring conflicts of interest must be held accountable. Investigations must proceed. Remember G.K. Chesterton's critical lesson that "Right is right, even if nobody does it. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is wrong about it."

PETA Urges Pentagon to Stop 'Cruel' Pulsed Radiation Experiments on Animals [WantToKnow.info: All News]

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals on Monday implored the U.S. military to reinstate a ban on the intentional wounding of animals in experiments and to stop radiation testing in an attempt to determine the cause of the mystery ailment popularly known as "Havana syndrome" that has afflicted U.S. government officials posted at diplomatic facilities in Washington, D.C. and several foreign countries. PETA argues that the military's decision to use live animals in testing related to Havana syndrome is "counterproductive" due to biological differences between humans and species subjected to the experiments, as well as the widespread availability of non-wounding research methods and the likelihood that radio frequency waves did not cause the mysterious ailment. The U.S. government has a long history of radiation experiments not only on animals but also on human beings. Scores of institutions, including some of North America's most prominent universities, laboratories, and hospitals hosted government and military experimentation on both volunteers and unwitting test subjects in the MK-ULTRA mind control experiments and other highly unethical and sometimes deadly programs. People suffering from Havana syndromeso named because it was first identified by U.S. and Canadian diplomats and embassy staff in the Cuban capitalexperienced what The Lancet described as "an abrupt onset of unusual clinical symptoms."

The Girl Scouts' Latest Business Project: Hailing 5G Cellphone Technology [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Beyond developing their camping skills, participating in a food drive to aid the hungry and donating pajamas for seniors, Girl Scouts across America this year were offered a new way to earn a special uniform patch: learning about the wonders of 5G cellphone technology and, in some cases, promoting it. The opportunity came courtesy of Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications giant, which sponsored the "Ericsson Limited Edition 5G & IoT" (Internet of Things) patch program. The program, still available on at least one Girl Scout website, targets all age levels, from Daisies (kindergarten-age Scouts) to Ambassadors (those in high school), with an array of activities intended to "introduce Girl Scouts to 5G and the Internet of Things." Scouts of all ages are invited to "discuss with your troop or an adult how mmWave spectrum is safe and does not cause harm to our health." Health experts, who are concerned that wireless radiation poses a health risk to children, criticize the Ericsson program as an improper and inaccurate form of industry marketing. "Anytime corporations advertise directly to children, I'm very suspicious," Dr. Jerome Paulson, a pediatrician ... told ProPublica. "It would be like Exxon Mobil sponsoring a patch on climate change." The Environmental Health Trust, an activist nonprofit ... recently sent a letter of protest to the Girl Scouts' national office, saying the patch materials "misleadingly state that 5G networks and cellphones are safe," and urging their removal from all Girl Scout websites.

How mud boosts your immune system [WantToKnow.info: All News]

"Don't get dirty!" was once a constant family refrain, as parents despairingly watched their children spoil their best clothes. Today, many parents may secretly wish their children had the chance to pick up a bit of grime. According to recent research, the dirt outside is teaming with friendly microorganisms that can train the immune system and build resilience to a range of illnesses, including allergies, asthma and even depression and anxiety. Certain natural materials, such as soil and mud ... contain surprisingly powerful microorganisms whose positive impact on children's health we are only beginning to fully understand. Our brains evolved in natural landscapes, and our perceptual systems are particularly well suited to wild outdoor spaces. Supporting this theory, one study from 2009 found that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were better able to concentrate following a 20-minute walk in the park, compared to a 20-minute walk on the streets of a well-kept urban area. People who grow up on farms are generally less likely to develop asthma, allergies, or auto-immune disorders like Crohn's disease [due to] their childhood exposure to a more diverse range of organisms in the rural environment. Michele Antonelli, a doctor from Italy ... has researched the ways that mud therapies can influence health. People with [skin] disorders ... seem to have an impoverished community of organisms. "These microorganisms can play a major role in many major chronic diseases," he says.

Your Brain Could Be Controlling How Sick You GetAnd How You Recover [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Mental states can have a profound impact on how ill we get and how well we recover. Understanding this could help to boost the placebo effect, destroy cancers, enhance responses to vaccination and even re-evaluate illnesses that, for centuries, have been dismissed as being psychologically driven. Neuroscientist Catherine Dulac and her team at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, have pinpointed neurons in an area called the hypothalamus that control symptoms including fever, warmth-seeking and loss of appetite in response to infection. "Most people probably assume that when you feel sick, it's because the bacteria or viruses are messing up your body," she says. But her team demonstrated that activating these neurons could generate symptoms of sickness even in the absence of a pathogen. An open question, Dulac adds, is whether these hypothalamic neurons can be activated by triggers other than pathogens, such as chronic inflammation. The insula ... is involved in processing emotion and bodily sensations. A 2021 study ... found that neurons in the insula store memories of past bouts of gut inflammation and that stimulating those brain cells reactivated the immune response. Such a reaction might prime the body to fight potential threats. But these reactions could also backfire. This could be the case for certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, that can be exacerbated by negative psychological states.

Europe's unique trials in food 'social security' [WantToKnow.info: All News]

As food prices rise around the world and access to healthy nutrition falls, trials in France and Belgium are experimenting with a unique "social security" for food. The affordability of food is a growing concern for increasing numbers of households worldwide as people struggle to cope with the greatest cost of living crisis in a generation. With some forced to cut back on food to meet other essential expenses, food insecurity is on the rise around the world. The idea of social security for food might sound far-fetched. But through recently launched projects in Montpellier in France and Brussels in Belgium, burgeoning collectives of NGOs, farmers, researchers and citizens are experimenting with the idea that quality, nutritious and organic food should be accessible to everyone regardless of income. "Eating healthy and having access to quality food is expensive and only a minority of the population can afford to do so," says Margherita Via, project manager at BEES Coop. Inspired by universal healthcare systems such as those in France and Belgium, civil society groups have proposed establishing a new branch of social security, under which each citizen would receive a monthly allowance enabling them to buy food meeting certain environmental and ethical criteria. At its heart, the idea is about moving away from food as a commodity. "A total overhaul of [the agro-industrial food] system based on the right to food is necessary," says agronomist Mathieu Dalmais, who has led the movement since its inception.

How the FBI Took an Innocent Woman's Savings [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The Federal Bureau of Investigation regularly seizes cash, cars and other valuables that belong to people who aren't accused of any crimes. Months later, many of those people receive a dense, boilerplate notice stating that the FBI plans to keep their property forever, without any explanation of whya blatantly unconstitutional practice. That's what happened to Linda Martin. When the FBI took her life savings from a safe-deposit box during a 2021 raid of US Private Vaults in Beverly Hills, Calif., she assumed her money would be returned. The company's alleged wrongdoing had nothing to do with her. But several months later, sheand hundreds of other innocent people who had their safe-deposit boxes takenreceived a notice stating that the government wanted to forfeit her money. The [notice] didn't accuse Ms. Martin of any crime or even lay out why the FBI was trying to take her property. The FBI sends out similarly inscrutable notices whenever it wants to forfeit property, in a clear violation of the Fifth Amendment. Federal agencies keep the proceeds from forfeited property. In the US Private Vaults case, the FBI admitted under oath that even before the raid occurred it had decided to pursue property forfeiture against everything worth over $5,000 in the renters' boxes. Using federal forfeiture records, the Institute for Justice calculated that from 2017 to 2021 Justice Department agencies gained more than $8 billion through forfeiture, with the FBI taking in more than $1.19 billion of that bounty.

U.S. Special Forces Want to Use Deepfakes for Psy-Ops [WantToKnow.info: All News]

U.S. Special Operations Command, responsible for some of the country's most secretive military endeavors, is gearing up to conduct internet propaganda and deception campaigns online using deepfake videos, according to federal contracting documents. SOCOM's next generation propaganda aspirations are outlined in a procurement document that lists capabilities it's seeking for the near future and soliciting pitches from outside parties that believe they're able to build them. Last with a new section: "Advanced technologies for use in Military Information Support Operations (MISO)," a Pentagon euphemism for its global propaganda and deception efforts. Perhaps as provocative as the mention of deepfakes is the section that follows, which notes SOCOM wishes to finely tune its offensive propaganda seemingly by spying on the intended audience through their internet-connected devices. Described as a "next generation capability to 'takeover' Internet of Things (loT) devices for collect [sic] data and information from local populaces to enable breakdown of what messaging might be popular and accepted through sifting of data once received," the document says that the ability to eavesdrop on propaganda targets "would enable MISO to craft and promote messages that may be more readily received by local populace." In 2017, WikiLeaks published pilfered CIA files that revealed a roughly similar capability to hijack into household devices.

'Project Fear' authors discussed when to 'deploy' new Covid variant [WantToKnow.info: All News]

[Former UK Health Secretary] Matt Hancock wanted to "deploy" a new Covid variant to "frighten the pants off" the public and ensure they complied with lockdown, leaked messages seen by The Telegraph have revealed. The Lockdown Files more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages sent between ministers, officials and others show how the Government used scare tactics to force compliance and push through lockdowns. Hancock ... appeared to suggest in one message that a new strain of Covid that had recently emerged would be helpful in preparing the ground for the looming lockdown, by scaring people into compliance. In a WhatsApp conversation on Dec 13 ... Damon Poole - one of Mr Hancock's media advisers - informed his boss that Tory MPs were "furious already about the prospect" of stricter Covid measures and suggested "we can roll pitch with the new strain". The comment suggested that they believed the strain could be helpful in preparing the ground for a future lockdown and tougher restrictions in the run-up to Christmas 2020. Mr Hancock then replied: "We frighten the pants off everyone with the new strain." Mr Poole agreed, saying: "Yep that's what will get proper behaviour [sic] change." Mr Hancock expressed his worry that talks over Brexit would dominate headlines and reduce the impact, and probed Mr Poole for his media advice. "When do we deploy the new variant," asked Mr Hancock. During the pandemic, the Government was accused of scaremongering but it was denied.

Project Fear's 'psychological warfare' must never be repeated [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Leaked messages seen by The Telegraph showed that in December 2020, Matt Hancock, the health secretary at the time, suggested that the Government "frighten the pants off everyone" to ensure strict Covid rules were adhered to. Sir Charles Walker, who was a leading member of the Covid Recovery Group of Conservative backbenchers, said that he was distressed by the leaked conversations. "What makes me so angry is the evils and the psychological warfare we deployed against young people and the population, all those behavioural psychologists," he [said]. "And there needs to be a reckoning. We need to understand and fully appreciate the damage that those sorts of campaigns did." Sir Charles lamented Parliament going "missing in action" as most MPs waved through dozens of Covid restrictions with little debate. He said: "Those voices that raised concerns were just othered. We were positioned as being anti-lockdown, Right-wing headbangers. And actually wanting to do the right thing isn't Right-wing. "We did terrible things to youngsters. We did terrible things to a large number of people. We need to make sure we never do those things again." Paul Dolan, a professor of behavioural science at the London School of Economics, blamed a mix of "mission creep" and "expertise creep" for a response dominated by groupthink. "It was wrong in every sense to make younger people scared of a virus that we knew very early on was of very limited risk to them," he [said].

Note: The unethical use of "nudge" tactics to inflate fear among the public prompted 40 psychologists in the UK to write a letter to the Parliaments Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, saying it was highly questionable whether a civilised society should knowingly increase the emotional discomfort of its citizens as a means of gaining their compliance." BOOK REVIEW: 'The Truth About Wuhan: How I Uncovered the Biggest Lie in History' [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The origin of SARS-CoV-2, the agent that causes the disease COVID-19, remains a mystery. But there are purportedly a few high up in government and scientific communities well aware of its genesis. In "The Truth About Wuhan: How I Uncovered the Biggest Lie in History," Andrew G. Huff, former EcoHealth Alliance vice president and senior scientist, details his coming forward "as a material witness and whistleblower related to SARS-CoV-2." "The Truth About Wuhan" [contains] an insider's view of working for EcoHealth Alliance; a damning critique of models and of function" research; the real COVID-19 timeline; China and U.S. culpability in the virus mayhem; and the multifarious, direct attacks used by the federal government to harass and discredit Mr. Huff. According to the author, "SARS-CoV-2 leaked from the [Wuhan Institute of Virology] laboratory as early as August 2019. The probable cases detected in Italy in 2019 make sense as Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Chinese. By mid-October 2019 the disease was likely already on every continent except Antarctica. The DoD, along with militaries globally, detected the disease in their countries' service members that attended the Military World Games in Wuhan. Trying to avoid global panic, governments began to implement response plans, which included the U.S. government's mobilization of the mRNA SARS-CoV-2 gene therapy."

Conflicting Reports Thicken Nord Stream Bombing Plot [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In the month since veteran journalist Seymour Hersh published his bombshell report alleging that President Joe Biden personally authorized a covert action to bomb the Nord Stream pipelines, we've seen a frenzy of speculation, detailed dissection of Hersh's specific assertions, and the emergence of competing narratives both supporting and denouncing the report. On March 7, the New York Times and the German newspaper Die Zeit both published stories that thicken the plot. The Times story was based on a narrative clearly being pushed by U.S. intelligence sources that "a pro-Ukrainian group carried out the attack." If the bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines was, as Hersh alleges, directed by the U.S., then the leaked suggestion that the culprits were a "pro-Ukrainian group" could indicate a nascent effort at floating a cover story. No one has claimed responsibility for this attack, but there are recent precedents for foreign actors taking credit for U.S. operations to conceal Washington's involvement. Military officials have lied or misled the public ... throughout U.S. history. There is no U.S. law or rule prohibiting the government from promoting a false alternative explanation to conceal an operation. "This is an established practice in military operations and intelligence activities where it is often known as 'cover and deception,'" [said former Government Secrecy Project director Steven Aftergood]. "Sometimes, in order to maintain the operational security of X, you have to declare that it is actually Y."

The Iraq war started the post-truth era. And America is to blame [WantToKnow.info: All News]

This month marks the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. We must not forget how the George W Bush administration manipulated the facts, the media and the public after the horrific attacks of 9/11, hellbent as the administration was to go to war in Iraq. On 11 September 2001, mere hours after the attacks, Donald Rumsfeld, the then secretary of defense, was already sending a memo to the joint chiefs of staff to find evidence that would justify attacking the Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (as well as Osama bin Laden). In the two years following 9/11, Bush and his top officials publicly uttered at least 935 lies about the threat that Saddam posed to the United States, according to the Center for Public Integrity. In the run-up to war, Bush & associates flooded the airwaves with the talking point "we don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud" so often that it began to sound like a jingle from a cheap law firm commercial. No weapons of mass destruction were ever found. Bush succeeded at the time because the public, primed to be afraid, was susceptible to his lies. The New York Times, as the nation's leading newspaper, played a key role in disseminating the administration's lies. The Iraq war ushered in a style of politics where truth is, at best, an inconvenience. Long before Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway ... told NBC's Chuck Todd about "alternative facts" ... we were already living in a post-truth world, one created in part by an established media willing and able to amplify government lies.

Chris Hedges: Lynching the Deplorables [WantToKnow.info: All News]

At least 1,003 people have been arrested and charged so far for participation in events on Jan. 6, with 476 pleading guilty, in what has been the largest single criminal investigation in U.S. history. Of the 394 federal defendants who have had their cases adjudicated and sentenced ... approximately 220 "have been sentenced to periods of incarceration" with a further 100 defendants "sentenced to a period of home detention." There are six convictions and four guilty pleas on charges of "seditious conspiracy." This offense is so widely defined that it includes conspiring to levy war against the government and delaying the execution of any law. Those charged and convicted of "seditious conspiracy" were accused of collaborating to oppose "the lawful transfer of presidential power by force" by preventing or delaying the Certification of the Electoral College vote. Those who walked to the Capitol were not aware that the Department of Justice had created arbitrary markers. Anyone who crossed that invisible line was charged with violating Capitol grounds. The vast majority of those caught up in the incursion of the Capitol did not commit serious crimes, engage in violence or know what they would do in Washington other than protest the election results. Environmental activists ... anti-war activists and even congressional staffers have engaged in numerous occupations of congressional offices and interrupted congressional hearings. Will they be given lengthy prison terms based on dubious interpretations of the law?

Note: Read this article in full to understand the scope of this criminal investigation undertaken by the federal government, and why there are massive concerns of government overreach and erosion of civil liberties. Watch a brief video of Attorney Joseph D. McBride discussing his work with the Jan. 6 defendants, describing the horrendous conditions many of them faced.

Most Major "Threats" These Days Are Based On Lies: False Flag Terrorism is a Great Example [WantToKnow.info: All News]

We are stuck in a never ending cycle of disaster that has led to one giant sense-making crises. False flag terrorism ... refers to governments creating, supporting, or staging events, like acts of terrorism in their own country and on their own citizenry, and then blaming it on someone else. Sometimes events can be created and even staged, and other times events are completely real yet the narrative we receive is where the deception lies. Either way, in many cases these events are used for control and/or political and financial gain. Take, for example, Operation Northwoods. This was a plan hatched by the US government in the early 1960s to fool the American public and the international community into supporting a war against Cuba in order to oust Fidel Castro. The plan included blowing up a US ship, attacking a US military base, sinking and blowing up boats of Cuban refugees, hijacking planes, and orchestrating violent terrorism in multiple US cities against American citizens. And of course, blaming Cuba for these actions. 9/11 could perhaps be one of the best examples of false flag terrorism, but the evidence that has lead the majority of people to feel this sentiment has not seen the light of day within the mainstream. There are many similarities between 9/11 and COVID, and in my mind COVID has been a clear act of bioterrorism by the same entities who proposed the 'solution.' These included vaccine mandates, mask mandates and more, which we are likely to see resurface again in the future.

Cell phones and cancer: New UC Berkeley study suggests cell phones sharply increase tumor risk [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Researchers took a comprehensive look at statistical findings from 46 different studies around the globe and found that the use of a cell phone for more than 1,000 hours, or about 17 minutes a day over a ten year period, increased the risk of tumors by 60 percent. Researchers also pointed to findings that showed cell phone use for 10 or more years doubled the risk of brain tumors. Joel Moskowitz ... with the UC Berkeley School of Public Health conducted the research in partnership with Korea's National Cancer Center, and Seoul National University. Their analysis took a comprehensive look at statistical findings from case control studies from 16 countries including the U.S., Sweden, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand. With the increased use of mobile devices, the research has been vast on their potential link to cancer. The findings have varied and at times been controversial. Many studies looking into the health risks of cell phone use have been funded or partially funded by the cellular phone industry. In 2017, California regulators alerted the public of potential health risks related to cell phone use. The California Department of Public Health ... provided advice on how to reduce exposure, including keeping phones away from your body and carrying devices in a backpack, briefcase, or purse. Health experts said cell phones should not be held in a pocket, bra, or belt holster, as a phone's antenna tries to stay connected with a cell tower whenever it's on, emitting radio frequency (RF) energy even when not in use.

'Dead' Electric Car Batteries Find a Second Life Powering Cities [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Last month, a small warehouse in the English city of Nottingham received the crucial final components for a project that leverages the power of used EV batteries to create a new kind of circular economy. Inside, city authorities have installed 40 two-way electric vehicle chargers that are connected to solar panels and a pioneering battery energy storage system, which will together power a number of on-site facilities and a fleet of 200 municipal vehicles. Each day Nottingham will send a combination of solar-generated energy and whatever is left in the vehicles after the day's use from its storage devices into the national grid. What makes the project truly circular is the battery technology itself. Funded by the European Union's Interreg North-West Europe Programme, the energy storage system, E-STOR, is made out of used EV batteries by the British company Connected Energy. After around a decade, an EV battery no longer provides sufficient performance for car journeys. However, they still can retain up to 80 percent of their original capacity, and with this great remaining power comes great reusability. "As the batteries degrade, they lose their usefulness for vehicles," says Matthew Lumsden, chairman of Connected Energy. "But batteries can be used for so many other things, and to not do so results in waste and more mining of natural resources." One study ... calculated that a second life battery system saved 450 tons of CO2 per MWh over its lifetime.

Could bartering become the new buying in a changed world? [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Around the world, people have been turning to swapping, trading and bartering during the coronavirus pandemic, whether to do their bit for the local community, save money or simply source hard-to-find baking ingredients. With economic uncertainty looming and anxiety levels soaring, barter is becoming an emerging alternative solution to getting by and staying busy. The increase in bartering is nowhere better exemplified than in Fiji. The country has a long tradition of barter, known as 'veisa' ... and Fijians have harnessed modern technology to connect even more people. "I knew that money would be tight to stretch out and even harder to come by. I asked myself what happens when there's no more money? Barter was a natural solution to that," says Marlene Dutta, who started the Barter for a Better Fiji group on 21 April. Its membership is just under 190,000  more than 20% of Fiji's population. Items changing hands have run the gamut pigs for kayaks, a violin for a leather satchel and doughnuts for building bricks but the most commonly requested items have been groceries and food. Bartering isn't just for individuals looking for baking items or help with grocery shopping, however. Businesses are increasingly interested in joining barter exchanges, which have "doctors, lawyers, service companies, retailers you name it", says Ron Whitney, President of the US-based International Reciprocal Trade Association, a non-profit organisation founded in 1979 that promotes and advances modern trade and barter systems.

Swarming honeybees can produce as much electricity as a thunderstorm, study shows [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Swarms of honeybees can generate as much electrical charge as a thunderstorm, new research shows. In a study published in the journal iScience on Monday, researchers from the University of Bristol ... discovered this phenomenon by chance. Biologist Ellard Hunting [said] that the Bristol team was studying how different organisms use the static electric fields that are everywhere in the environment. Atmospheric electricity has a variety of functions, mainly in shaping weather events and helping organisms, for example in finding food. "Flowers have an electric field and bees can sense these fields. And these electric fields of flowers can change when it has been visited by a bee, and other bees can use that information to see whether a flower has been visited," Hunting explained. Having set up equipment to measure atmospheric electric fields at the university's field station, which features several honeybee hives, Hunting and his team noticed that whenever the bees swarmed, there was "a profound effect on atmospheric electric fields," even though the weather hadn't changed. All insects create a charge during flight as a result of friction in the air, with the size of the charge varying between species. Individual bees carry a charge that is small enough to be overlooked by researchers, so "this effect (in swarming bees) came as a surprise," Hunting said. They found that, depending on the swarm density, the atmospheric charge could be similar to that of a storm cloud, thunderstorm or electrified dust storm.

Governments shut down the internet more often than ever, report says [WantToKnow.info: All News]

More countries shut down the internet in 2022 than ever before, according to a new report by digital rights researchers. Authorities in 35 countries instituted internet shutdowns at least 187 times, according to the New York-based digital rights watchdog Access Now. Nearly half of these shutdowns occurred in India, and if that nation is excluded, 2022 saw the most number of shutdowns globally since the group began monitoring disruptions in 2016. [The] report ... spans complete blackouts, suspensions of specific phone networks or social media apps, and the slowing down of internet speeds. Triggers for shutdowns have included large protests, conflict situations, elections and even examinations. Whatever the situation, they make it substantially more difficult for people to communicate and receive or send news, and they incur significant economic costs, which prompted the United Nations last year to call for governments to avoid using such a blunt tactic. "This can be a big warning sign of how the human rights situation is deteriorating, and shutdowns are often associated with increased levels of insecurity and other restrictions," said Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman at the U.N. Human Rights Office. A majority of [India's] 84 disruptions were logged in Indian-administered Kashmir, part of a disputed region in the Himalayas. India has at times cited a desire to control social unrest in the territory, where there is a separatist movement. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and mass civilian protests in Iran also led to internet shutdowns

U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks [WantToKnow.info: All News]

On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness. Yet the company, founded in 2016, didn't seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 and the agency rejected the application. Musk has detailed a bold vision for Neuralink: Both disabled and healthy people will pop into neighborhood facilities for speedy surgical insertions of devices with functions ranging from curing obesity, autism, depression or schizophrenia to web-surfing and telepathy. Musk also has said Neuralink would restore full mobility to paralyzed patients. Reuters exclusively reported late last year that the federal government was investigating the company's treatment of its research animals. The probe was launched amid growing employee concern that the company is rushing experiments, causing additional suffering and deaths of pigs, sheep and monkeys. Musk's company ... trails at least one direct rival in the race for FDA approval. Synchron, a competitor making a BCI implant, has won the agency's blessing for human trials. The company first tested its device on four patients in Australia who successfully sent text messages with their minds. Synchron recently raised $75 million, including from funds backed by tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.

'Aims': the software for hire that can control 30,000 fake online profiles [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Advanced Impact Media Solutions, or Aims, which controls more than 30,000 fake social media profiles, can be used to spread disinformation at scale and at speed. It is sold by "Team Jorge", a unit of disinformation operatives based in Israel. Tal Hanan, who runs the covert group using the pseudonym "Jorge", told undercover reporters that they sold access to their software to unnamed intelligence agencies, political parties and corporate clients. Team Jorge's Aims software ... is much more than a bot-controlling programme. Each avatar ... is given a multifaceted digital backstory. Aims enables the creation of accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram and YouTube. Some even have Amazon accounts with credit cards, bitcoin wallets and Airbnb accounts. Hanan told the undercover reporters his avatars mimicked human behaviour and their posts were powered by artificial intelligence. [Our reporters] were able to identify a much wider network of 2,000 Aims-linked bots on Facebook and Twitter. We then traced their activity across the internet, identifying their involvement ... in about 20 countries including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Panama, Senegal, Mexico, Morocco, India, the United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, Belarus and Ecuador. The analysis revealed a vast array of bot activity, with Aims' fake social media profiles getting involved in a dispute in California over nuclear power; a #MeToo controversy in Canada ... and an election in Senegal.

FBI, Pentagon helped research facial recognition for street cameras, drones [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The FBI and the Defense Department were actively involved in research and development of facial recognition software that they hoped could be used to identify people from video footage captured by street cameras and flying drones, according to thousands of pages of internal documents that provide new details about the government's ambitions to build out a powerful tool for advanced surveillance. The documents, revealed in response to an ongoing Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union filed against the FBI, show how closely FBI and Defense officials worked with academic researchers to refine artificial-intelligence techniques that could help in the identification or tracking of Americans without their awareness or consent. Many of the records relate to the Janus program, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, or IARPA. The improved facial recognition system was ultimately folded into a search tool, called Horus, and made available to the Pentagon's Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, which helps provide military technologies to civilian police forces. No federal laws regulate how facial recognition systems can be used. The tool's use in domestic mass surveillance would be a "nightmare scenario," said Nathan Wessler, a deputy director at the ACLU. "It could give the government the ability to pervasively track as many people as they want for as long as they want. There's no good outcome for that in a democratic society."

For Houston Freeway Fighters, Federal Governments Actions Speak Louder Than Words Strong Towns Media

(Source: Wikimedia Commons/formulanone.)

On February 28, 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced the first round of grantees for the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program, a $1 billion five-year initiative pledging to reconnect cities bisected and burdened by highways. A week later, the same department informed Houstonians opposed to the North Houston Highway Infrastructure Project (NHHIP) that the $9 billion highway expansion will continue as planned, dismissing the civil rights complaint filed against TxDOT. President Joe Biden and US Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg promised to undo the past harms caused by freeway construction, but it seems they are doomed to repeat these harms in Houston, wrote Stop TxDOT I-45, a group that mobilized to fight the NHHIP, in response to the news.

When Stop TxDOT saw how prominently the language of racial equity and reconciliation featured in the current administrations priorities, they saw an unprecedented opportunity for the federal government to intervene in a project theyve described as ...

No, I honestly dont think further research is warranted Freethought Blogs

You might not want to follow Holly Dunsworth on Twitter she might sometimes spring an ugly surprise on you. Like this paper from the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine. Heres the entirety of the content of the paper.

Many accounts refer to insertion of finger into anus mostly for gratification from stimulation of prostate gland, but index case Mr. M. continued doing this to get rid of constipation that eventually led to feelings of guilt, stinky fingers, not able to defecate normally, and dysphoric emotions. Further research is needed to find out the phenomenology of this condition.

Key words: Depression, smelly finger, stinky finger

INTRODUCTION
Many of us might have once tried to push finger from our rear end, but experiences vary from feeling pleasurable to disgust. Well many times, habit of same can lead to shame-ridden heart with all dysphoric emotions.

CASE REPORT
Index patient Mr. M. 13 years of age, male, and belonging to middle socioeconomic status visited clinical psychologist with the complaints of sad mood, extreme guilt feelings, and anxiety. Above all, these symptoms seem to be secondary to his repeated act of inserting finger into his anus. The patient reported that he used to have constipation and that resulted in spending more time in toilet. Once he accidently put his finger inside his anus and found that it helped him easy defecating. Subsequently, it became his habit and he knew this was easy way out. However, soon this act started intruding his life. First, he started spending more time in washroom doing same. Second, his fingers would stink like shit even if he washes hands repeatedly with soap or apply mustard oil on hands. Many people including his family members commented on him that he was stinking and the patient used to cover his hands in front of others. Third, repeated insertion of finger led to bleeding heavily. He would feel sad and anxious most of the time along with the extreme feelings of guilt associated with the act. The duration of the condition was reported to be 3 months. Depression and anxiety symptoms were found to be subsyndromal rather waxing and waning around the thoughts of the act and guilt-ridden thoughts such as why am I indulging into such act? and Is it that I cant defecate normally now?. Many times, the patient tried to stop this act, but he was not able to defecate and thus continued despite his sad mood and guilt feelings.

DISCUSSION
Index case could not be explained on obsessions and compulsions or habit and impulse disorder as no intrusion of thoughts or compulsions or impulse to action was present.[1] Neither could this be explained by olfactory reference syndrome where only patient has sense that he or she is producing...

The puzzling strategy of Ron DeSantis Freethought Blogs

Conventional wisdom seems to be that Florida governor Ron DeSantis is planning to seek the Republican presidential nomination, and that he will announce his candidacy after the states legislative session ends in June. That many people think he will be a candidate is clear. About three months ago, I saw a neighbor walking her dog wearing a DeSantis 2024 sweatshirt. He seems to be acting like a prospective candidate, doing all the things that candidates do, like visiting early primary states such as Iowa, writing a book, and then going on a book tour and giving interviews which is usually just a means of a candidate getting their name out to the public without actually making an announcement.

He has raised his profile nationally by pandering to the extreme right wing of his party,. He seems to have made being anti-woke, opposing covid regulations, and pandering to racists and anti-LGBT sentiment his main platform. He is clearly seeking to outflank Trump on that side, trying to give the impression to voters that they can have the full-bore Trump hate agenda without the Trump baggage. In this he is contrasting himself with other candidates who may want to appeal to those Republican primary voters who are weary of Trump and culture war issues and seek a fresh face.

I must admit that I am a little puzzled by his strategy, mainly the one of timing. Why challenge Trump for the 2024 nomination? DeSantis is setting himself up for a brutal battle and Trump has already started lashing out at him in his typical style, giving him nicknames and mocking him. Since DeSantis and Trump are competing for largely the same culture war-loving voters, and those people tend to be loyal to Trump, how can he win over those voters without attacking Trump? He seems to think that he can be Trump without all the Trump baggage, trying to obliquely bring up the latters legal woes by mentioning the issue of him paying hush money to a porn star.

Breaking his silence on Donald Trumps legal troubles, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday criticized the Manhattan district attorney who is pursuing charges against the former president and vowed his office would not be involved if the matter trickles into Trumps adopted home state.

But DeSantis, a rising rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, stopped well short of offering support for the former president and instead seemed to poke fun at the situation Trump has found himself in as he attempts a political comeback and a third campaign for the White House. A grand jury is in the final stages of determining whether Trump should face charges over an alleged payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels related to a supposed affair.

I dont know what goes into paying hush money to a porn...

This term was coined by economists around seven years ago and is usually a response by markets to increasing inflationary pressures. The term implies that several globally popular food brands have been reducing the size or quantity of their products, without making any significant change in their prices. America, land of school shootings and train derailments Freethought Blogs

Nothing will be done.

Dont get me wrong, there will be lots of talk and argument and indignant posturing, but nothing of substance will be done, and these terrible things will continue happening. This is a religious country, so they must be acts of God, dont you know.

Behold! The resurrected mammoth! Freethought Blogs

Eat your heart out, George Church. The Australians have beaten you to the goal of resurrecting the wooly mammoth, and here it is:

Its a meatball is what it is. Just a meatball. Probably not even a very good meatball.

Vow worked with Prof Ernst Wolvetang, at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering at the University of Queensland, to create the mammoth muscle protein. His team took the DNA sequence for mammoth myoglobin, a key muscle protein in giving meat its flavour, and filled in the few gaps using elephant DNA.

This sequence was placed in myoblast stem cells from a sheep, which replicated to grow to the 20bn cells subsequently used by the company to grow the mammoth meat.

It was ridiculously easy and fast, said Wolvetang. We did this in a couple of weeks. Initially, the idea was to produce dodo meat, he said, but the DNA sequences needed do not exist.

They replaced one protein in cultured sheep cells with a protein containing the mammoth sequence. Thats sort of it? Im not impressed. There is much more to the flavor of meat than myoglobin: theres fat distribution, muscle type, and pardon me, vegetarians, but also blood supply white vs. dark meat. Theres texture, which is going to be in large part a product of activity in the living animal. None of that is here in that meatball. Its the equivalent of those nuggets made from pink slime.

And the creators are afraid to even taste it!

No one has yet tasted the mammoth meatball. We havent seen this protein for thousands of years, said Wolvetang. So we have no idea how our immune system would react when we eat it. But if we did it again, we could certainly do it in a way that would make it more palatable to regulatory bodies.

Oh come on. Its mutton with a bit of elephant myoglobin tossed in. Its mammal meat. People eat sheep and elephant without any notable reactions from their immune system, this isnt going to be any different. The truth is theyre the people who saw the sausage being made, watched the cells getting filtered out of a flask, precipitated into a damp mass, compressed to squeeze out the tissue culture medium, and rolled out into a lump of homogenous goo and cooked. Of course its unappetizing. No worse than watching living animals being butchered, but still not some...

The Federal Government Is Finally Increasing Funding for Salmon Hatcheries. Tribes Say Its Not Enough. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Oregon Public Broadcasting. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

The federal government has announced plans to increase funding for the Columbia River Basins salmon hatcheries, the often-crumbling facilities that maintain the rivers dwindling salmon populations. But tribes and state agencies say the influx of funds is only a fraction of what is needed.

The Bonneville Power Administration, the federal agency thats required to pay for salmon recovery using proceeds from selling power generated by hydroelectric dams, is putting an additional $50 million toward repairs at hatcheries operated by tribes and states. The agency also plans to increase annual funding for hatchery upkeep from $500,000 to $2.7 million.

In May, Oregon Public Broadcasting and ProPublica reported on how the federal governments neglect of an old and struggling hatchery system had put tribal fishing rights in jeopardy. The news organizations analysis showed that the outlook for fish survival was so poor that the hatchery system was at risk of collapsing under the strain of climate change, unable to produce meaningful levels of fish. Bonneville is the primary funder of the rivers hatcheries, with additional money coming from federal appropriations and local government. In August, OPB and ProPublica reported that Bonneville had resisted tribes restoration efforts and constrained salmon recovery funds even while generating hundreds of millions of dollars in surplus revenue.

Many salmon habitats were destroyed or drastically altered by the repeated damming of the Columbia in the mid-20th century to create hydropower, provide irrigation and improve shipping navigation. Throughout that period, Congress authorized the dams and turned to hatcheries to compensate for the fish losses.

But hatcheries never ensured that they produced the numbers of fish that tribes were promised. Around the time salmon reached endangered status in the late 1980s and 1990s, tribes opened their own hatcheries and began reforming them from mass fish-production facilities into nurseries f...

Genius investor! Freethought Blogs

I admit, Im impressed. Elon Musk has thrown away $24 billion in less than half a year. That takes real money savvy.

Elon Musk has revealed that he believes Twitter is currently worth $20 billion, or less than half the $44 billion he purchased it for just five months ago.

In a companywide email Friday obtained by the New York Times about employee stock grants, Musk admitted that the companys value since going private, in his estimation, is roughly $20 billion; in the aftermath of Musks acquisition, many advertisers the social networks main source of income fled the service, and as Vox reported earlier this week, havent returned.

Thats not the punch line, though. This is the punch line:

Elsewhere in the email, Musk said that at one point Twitter was four months away from running out of money, which sparked the need for mass layoffs and other cuts. However, an optimistic Chief Twit also told the employees that still remain there that I see a clear, but difficult, path to a >$250B valuation, and that he now views Twitter as an inverse start-up.

As ever, Elon Musk is the master of hype and self-delusion. No, he doesnt have a plan to increase the value to $250 billion. Right now, hes playing games with checkmarks that people can buy. I never saw the point of getting verified and getting blue checkmark on my twitter account back in the day, when the company was run by only semi-incompetent management, and now that Musk is imposing weird arbitrary rules to get people to pay for it, I have even less interest. He thinks this will help him increase the value of the company by $230 billion? Thats nuts.

This is A Song of Hope Freethought Blogs

This is not a great revelation for anyone, but making things, to say nothing of growing things, is an act of believing in a better future. In this case, its a better future, by definition, since it includes cilantro and holy basil.

Last year I was perfecting holy basil fried egg, which was pretty much what it sounds like. But then winter came. Ill be at it again in a month or two, Im sure. My summer and fall last year was pretty disjoint.

My winter has been disjoint, too, to tell the truth. Its amazing how distracting things can be. I havent been exposing them to you for various reasons, but Ill give an example of one: in the winter we had a pretty severe cold snap for a few days, during which there was also a power failure. The interior temperature of my house was 5 degrees above freezing when I ran an inverter and an extension cord to my truck so I could power the furnace for a few minutes. Fun stuff. In all that drama, I forgot about the other house I own that is on the property. I used to rent it to Mike C, who maintained it well, but Mike moved on so it has been sitting empty. And, it froze solid. When I finally had my shit together and got down there, every one of the 6 cast iron radiators had exploded, as had the entire water system and hot water heating system including the furnace. So I had to call my dad and tell him I had totaled the house, and of course his suggestion was well, you got pretty good at running PEX pipe when you did your darkroom, I guess you could get it all back together again this year. Hes 90+ and Im 60. Its not going to happen. But its distracting.

Lets talk about hopeful things, instead.

I dumped the old soil from the pots and re-charged them, with a brief pause to practically jump out of my skin when I put the trowel into the bag of potting soil, and a mouse popped up and ran up my arm before high-jumping and parkouring away. If youre not expecting that, its a surprise.

Naturally, the piece de resistance is going to be the tomatoes. I am aiming for 2 big pots, which will give me enough that I can periodically have a special salad or tomatoes for breakfast.

Thai bird chilies are necessary, as is cilantro:

Anyone Should Be Able to Create Anything, Anywhere (All at Once) WhoWhatWhy

When I was growing up we got a lot of things wrong. Our museums left out minority artists, our publishing houses overlooked disparate voices, our film studios refused to cast enough people of color, or with disabilities, or who were transgender. There werent enough female film directors or Black editors.

The power structures of the Artistic Industrial Complex (what are sometimes creepily called content providers) are trying to redress that imbalance by putting in express lanes for formerly underrepresented segments of our society, in publishing, film, television, music, theater, museums. Maybe its not fast enough for your liking, but its happening.

But along with those express lanes, theyve put in restrictions on what those artists can produce. They want them to stay in their appointed lanes.

The result is that lately weve been diminishing our own artistic enjoyment.

Its like that joke in (sorry) Woody Allens Manhattan, when a young woman says, I finally had an orgasm, and my doctor said it was the wrong kind.

That seems to be the key joke missed in todays culture. Were bottling our own creative libidos, stopping up our earthquake machines, by putting blinkers over our eyes, plugs in our ears, and gags in our mouths.

Heres my manifesto in one sentence:

Any audience/reader should be able to be affected by anything created by anyone.

If a straight actor wants to play a gay character, let him. If a trans actor wants to play a straight character, let them. If a white writer wants to write a book about Hispanic culture, go ahead. If a Black playwright wants to write about Alaskan Natives or German expressionists or the Teapot Dome scandal or the Beatles, thats dandy-do. This isnt complicated.

Either the project works or it doesnt. But dont reject it on the basis of its creators or performers race, color, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Were just itching to be offended by everything.

This even goes for the art weve inherited. Picasso has been recently taken to task for his interest in African sculpture, which influenced some of his early work. The Guardian has described it as part of his ...

What's It Like Being Stranded in Your City? (Part 1) Strong Towns Media

(Source: Unsplash/Shobhit Sharma.)

My birthday is at the end of February. Every year, I take time to celebrate not just a new trip around the sun, but also the anniversary of completing one of my most notable (and perhaps craziest) life adventures: a solo, sparsely funded, six-month walk across 12 countries in Europe.

The adventure began late fall, 2017, when I decided to accompany a friend to Ireland who was traveling for an artists retreat. A few days later, I learned Id need to change my living situation, which would add a few hundred dollars to my monthly budget and received a call offering me a remote job teaching writing for an online school. The stars, so to speak, seemed to be aligning. Why take on more expenses if I could just travel with my new job, instead?

Let the adventure begin!

We bought our tickets (mine one-way) one Saturday morning over homemade blueberry pancakes, rejoicing at low fares. After a few weeks of prep, we left for Cork, Ireland. We traveled together for about a week, then parted ways: my friend for Galway, Ireland, myself for London. And with that began an experience that deeply shaped me as a person, not least in my perspective on cities and urban design

Navigating around a dozen countries alone, without a car or much money, forced me to experience each city with a unique sensitivity to things I would perhaps have overlooked had I been more materially comfortable. My tight budget made me sensitive to the walkability of each city, the availability of public transit,...

Required Faculty Diversity (DEI) Statements Undermine the Future of the University of Washington and Other Colleges Cliff Mass Weather Blog

At the University of Washington and many other academic institutions, applicants for faculty positions must complete a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) statement that describes their past actions in support of DEI and how they will foster DEI if appointed.  In addition, these required statements generally demand that the applicant express support or commitment to DEI principles.

As will be shown below, such DEI statements are of questionable legality, suppress viewpoint diversity, and politicize academic institutions.  They are destructive to the foundational values of academia, create a monoculture of opinion, act as a litmus test of political belief, and often hurt the groups they are meant to support.

DEI Represents the Politicization of the Academy

Although the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion superficially appear to be general and innocuous, the working definitions used in most universities are highly partisan and politicized.  Diversity generally refers to encouraging the representation of certain identity groups, based on race, color, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.  Equity refers to equal outcomes for all groups, not equality of opportunity.  And Inclusion generally only encompasses certain favored groups.

The political nature of such DEI ideas is highlighted by the huge differences in support of DEI across the political spectrum.  In a recent poll of 1491 faculty by the non-partisan group FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression), 75% of liberal or left-leaning faculty supported mandatory diversity statements while 90% of conservative faculty and 56% of politically moderate faculty saw them as inappropriate political litmus tests.  Several Republican-led...

Company Invents Fish Scale Tiles That Look And Feel Like Ceramics True Activist

Fast Company

When you take a look at the landfills all over the world, youll see how these are filled with non-recyclable garbage thats left there to rot for the next century or so. If no one does anything about this, this could definitely pose a threat to the environment.

Something needs to be done, and right now. We can no longer afford to wait. Its a good thing that there are several entrepreneurial and forward-thinking companies out there that have come up with wonderful solutions that may truly save the environment from future problems.

In fact, in order to come up with a renewable, biodegradable design material that also helps remove landfill waste stream, French designers have come up with a plan that everyone could definitely get into. They are proposing to cover the walls of homes with fish scales instead of ceramic tiles, and this new idea may be the next wave of recycling.

The idea to come up with an elegant-looking tile made entirely from fish scales is worth the look and consideration, and this is called Scalite. The makers of the tiles separate and then combine the naturally-occurring minerals and the collagen in the...

Eviction is Murder, Remember Eucy It's Going Down

Anonymous submission on recent police shooting and eviction in Seattle, WA. Post includes a photo from the March 24th vigil, and also a flyer for the next one.

by a friend of Eucy

Eviction is murder. My friend is dead.

Each and every day across stolen North America, county sheriffs arrive on thousands of doorsteps to boot people from their homes. Not a weekday goes by in any major city without several such visits. For many kicked to the curb, the implied armed threat of the pigs arrival is tragically enough to force compliance. Resistance means almost certain death; homelessness is more like playing Russian roulette with statistics. Slow but everyday murder by the state for not having enough money.

Here in so-called Seattle, a gruesome record 300 people died on the streets last year. Numerous more perished in the temporary shelter of the state- and corporate-funded nonprofit complex serving but never really solving the endless homelessness crisis. Snow and the endless rain. Violence from malicious nimbys or others in the same fucked up position. Neglect and indifference from doctors and nurses. Overdose from the few things able numb the pain. All the more likely when society already fucks over people like you.

On Monday, March 20th, the sheriffs arrived at my friend Eucys door. They could have come any time in the last few weeks. Eucy fought her evictions for months. Legal channels, nonprofit support, community networks. Seattle bans evictions in the winter, acknowledging how deadly they are. Apparently slightly-less frequent death makes evictions the rest of the year okay. But when the winter moratorium ended March 1st, it became a waiting game for Eucy and her friends.

Eucy didnt want to go anywhere. For years she organized and fought against slumlords and shitty bosses for years alongside local anarchist and socialist groups. Now when they were coming for her, she refused to be condemned to death by statistics.

Unfortunately Eucy was alone when the sheriffs arrived that fateful morning. Frie...

Environmental Racism Made Worse by Global Warming: West Coast Edition Freethought Blogs

One key to understanding the world as it exists today, is understanding that most of it has been shaped by white supremacy for most of the last few hundred years. Thats not the only factor, but its one of the biggest ones, and it is still an active ideology, in one form or another, in most of the ruling class of the so-called West. This doesnt just affect non-white people in those countries, though, because the colonial empires primarily the U.S. these days still exert a great deal of control over the so-called Global South.

Environmental racism is one effect of white supremacy, both on the global scale, and on the local scale, as the least powerful are routinely forced to live with exposure to mine runoff, industrial chemicals, coal dust, traffic pollution, and more. When it comes to traffic pollution, keep in mind that a combination of segregation, redlining, and malice in designing the interstate highways system, black communities were very deliberately forced, by the government, to live with higher air pollution, on average, than white communities. As with climate change, none of us are safe from air pollution, but it is not a coincidence that in a country built on white supremacy, as the United States was, non-white people have it the worst.

I say as with climate change, but the reality is that climate change isnt really separable from air pollution. Global warming, in a myriad of ways, both causes air pollution, and makes existing pollution more dangerous. I suspect one would find similar results around the globe, but for a local example of how this works, and how it relates to race, we can look at this study of how the rising temperature will make existing inequality worse:

We have known that air pollution disproportionally impacts communities of color, the poor and communities that are already more likely to be impacted by other sources of environmental pollution, said the studys lead author Jordan Kern, assistant professor of forestry and environmental resources at NC State. What we know now is that drought and heat waves makes things worse.

For the study, researchers estimated emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter from power plants in California across 500 different scenarios for what the weather could look like in future years, which they called synthetic weather years. These years simulated conditions that coul...

Report Back from Sweep Defense in Houston, TX It's Going Down

Report back from resistance to sweeps in so-called Houston, Texas from Space City Anarchist Organization.

On Thursday, March 9, a coalition of around 20 Houston anarchists and abolitionists mobilized to oppose a sweep by the City of Houston, Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriffs Department, TXDOT and Coalition for the Homeless. This sweep was part of a larger strategy of escalating control and violence against Unhoused Houstonians, such as the recent sweep of Tent City and HPD issuing tickets to Food Not Bombs volunteers, forcing them out of the location where theyve served food for decades. It also comes just a few months after the opening of the Citys new, widely publicized Navigation Center and a new designated feeding center by the city (which currently resides on HPD property).

The organizations involved in these sweeps purport that they are ending homelessness by simply moving people indoors and off the streets, and measure their success by the number of people housed, without regard for the coercion, disrespect, and violence required to achieve such numbers. Contrary to the narrative that the majority of people choose to go to the Navigation Center, residents are not actually given any choice in the matter; once their camp is selected for decommisioning, they usually have a few days to decide whether they will go to the Center for processing or take whatever belongings they can carry to another encampment, which will likely be swept yet again in the near future. All of these moves by the city are an attempt to further control the lives of Unhoused Houstonians, and force them to comply with government bureaucracy to receive services.

Since January 2022, SCAO has regularly distributed hot meals and supplies to several houseless encampments near St. Joseph Parkway and I-45. In May of last year, we got word that Houstons Coalition for the Homeless, in tandem with the City of Houston, Houston Police Department, and TXDOT, would soon begin conducting a sweep of the encampments in this area to clear the way for expansion of I-45. However, the ongoing controversy surrounding this project continued to delay the sweep until eventually, discussion of sweeps admittedly fell off our radar.

Deep-Sea Mining for Rare Metals Will Destroy Ecosystems: Report (Maria)

The author writes, An investigation by conservationists has found evidence that deep-seabed mining of rare minerals could cause extensive and irreversible damage to the planet. The report, to be published on Monday by the international wildlife charity Fauna & Flora, adds to the growing controversy that surrounds proposals to sweep the ocean floor of rare minerals. Mining companies want to exploit these deposits which are crucial to the alternative energy sector because land supplies are running low, they say. However, oceanographers, biologists and other researchers have warned that these plans would cause widespread pollution, destroy global fish stocks and obliterate marine ecosystems.

For a start, Beijings worldview requires it to stay strategically close to Russia: As Beijings leaders see it, the U.S. is blocking Chinas path to global leadership, aided by European governments, while most of its own geographical neighbors from Japan and South Korea to Vietnam and India are increasingly skeptical rather than supportive.

Iran Hostages, Carter, Reagan, and Bush: What the NY Times Missed WhoWhatWhy

Recently, The New York Times published an article with a stunning new claim that seemingly verifies a long-alleged plot by Ronald Reagans 1980 campaign to prevent Jimmy Carter from winning reelection.

The fact of the Times publishing the scoop was significant, since the paper has generally dismissed the so-called October Surprise theory, relying on a congressional investigation that I and many believe was a whitewash.

In fact, though I have come to believe theres enough evidence to conclude that the Reagan campaign did carry out this outrageous and illegal operation, I also have doubts about the new material.

But my big beef is how the Times, following a familiar pattern, presents something in isolation as if completely unaware of, or unwilling to discuss, the much vaster criminality of which it is part. That larger framework is required for anyone trying to understand the political corruption and immorality that has long afflicted America, and the profound consequences still being felt 43 years later.

Carter Election Mystery

The article recounts the story of a former Texas politician, Ben Barnes, who says he accompanied his friend and business partner John Connally, a former Democratic Texas governor turned Republican, on a trip to the Middle East in 1980. During the trip, Barnes says, they met a slew of Arab leaders. Barnes now says he suspects the real purpose of the trip was to help Reagan steal the election:

Mr. Barnes said he was certain the point of Mr. Connallys trip was to get a message to the Iranians to hold the hostages until after the election. Ill go to my grave believing that it was the purpose of the trip, he said.

This is a new wrinkle on a topic that has confounded investigators and researchers for decades.

The background: 52 Americans were taken hostage in the 1979 Iranian revolution led by exiled Muslim cleric Ayatollah ...

AI Puns Freethought Blogs

I think this one is actually pretty good.

Thats a dad joke, right? Actually, it reminds me of a joke attributed to Voltaire and the Marquis de Bivre allegedly challenged by the king to make a witty pun about me he replied, Ah sire, le roi nest pas un sujet! (It works in translation: Sire, the monarch is not a subject!

As they say, quit while youre ahead. But, no:

Im more fond of visual quirkiness, but that ought to be understandable since I like to make things. Seldom are they funny, but I notice visual quirks and thats often what makes me happy about a given thing.

------ divider ------

It has something to do with my memory (which does not work so well, anymore) but I often find lyrics from songs breaking into my live-stream, often from the deep past. I was telling Jenna the Welder that she needs to wear her fire resistant boots when forging hot steel, and muttered, shoes that no man would want to wear (a fragment from Bauhaus) and later that evening I decided to ask Midjourney AI for some shoes that no man would want to wear I also asked ChatGPT where the lyrics shoes that no man would want to wear come from, and it told me about a song:

Walking in Memphis by American singer-songwriter Marc Cohn. The song was released in 1991 and became a hit, reaching number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

I then asked ChatGPT about The Man With X-Ray Eyes from 1981 and it apologized.

Shoes that no man would want to wear
[Incomprehensible] the nights last cold stare
Red fist curled round the house
Wash away, boy, Shellys shoes

Did Marc Cohn listen to Bauhaus back in the day? Bauhaus actually used that trope at least twice, another time on an errata track called Departure:

Its not just a planet of straight white men anymore Freethought Blogs

Before fringe groups and weird haters hide behind the label of science, they really ought to more aware of what many scientists are actually saying, because theyre far more woke than you know. For instance, there is a strong movement within ecology and evolutionary biology to consciously revisit the history and assumptions of the discipline, with the EEB Language Project working to make the terminology more inclusive and recognize the biases in our history. This is a good thing, although some of the more senior members of the field will no doubt squawk about it. Too bad.

The group has just published a paper, Championing inclusive terminology in ecology and evolution that Im filing away to use in the ecological developmental biology course Ill be teaching in spring of 2024.

In recent years, events such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and waves of anti-Black violence have highlighted the need for leaders in EEB to adopt inclusive and equitable practices in research, collaboration, teaching, and mentoring. As we plan for a more inclusive future, we must also grapple with the exclusionary history of EEB. Much of Western science is rooted in colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy, and these power structures continue to permeate our scientific culture. Here, we discuss one crucial way to address this history and make EEB more inclusive for marginalized communities: our choice of scientific terminology.

We provide background on how terminology influences inclusion in EEB, describe existing community-based initiatives and our new grassroots effort to champion inclusive language in EEB, and offer guiding questions and considerations for readers committed to using inclusive scientific terminology. This effort is particularly important for redressing the ongoing marginalization of many groups in EEB, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities; and disabled communities; among others. This work is motivated by the collective experiences, perspectives, and knowledges of our author group. Mitigating the institutional problems in EEB will take significant effort and resources, and examining the role of language in these problems must go beyond attention to scientific terms. It must also include consideration of how language is used among scientists more broadly, and how English is often treated as the dominant language for scientific work. Nevertheless, we propose that inclusion can be fostered by a collective commitment to be more conscientious and intentional about the scientific terminology we use when teaching, mentoring, collaborating, and conducting...

How Many People Will Be Left in Chasiv Yar? WhoWhatWhy

CHASIV YAR, Ukraine Neighbors in Chasiv Yar chatted Friday afternoon to the accompaniment of machine gun fire and booming artillery.

We live here under fire, said one of the residents, Luba.

On the outskirts of town, the sound of battle was fierce. In recent weeks, Russian military forces have drawn closer to Chasiv Yar as they continue to encircle Bakhmut, a neighboring town a few miles east that has been the epicenter of fighting for months.

Oleksandr Musiienko, head of the Kyiv-based think tank Center for Military and Legal Studies, predicted during a phone interview on Saturday that the Russian advances are the culmination of an offensive that is losing momentum due to heavy Russian military losses. Still, the gains around Bakhmut have placed Chasiv Yar and other nearby towns and cities under heavier fire.

As fighting raged on the outskirts of Chasiv Yar on Friday afternoon, Luba talked with her neighbor Oleksiy.

Its getting on our nerves, of course, very much, Oleksiy said about the noise.

Especially in the night, Luba added. A lot of attacks.

Down the road, much of Chasiv Yar was damaged and destroyed. Mud and debris covered pothole-lined roads, and homes and residential buildings sat damaged and vacant or occupied by Ukrainian troops.

Oleksiy and Luba said they have lived without electricity for a month, and without running water and gas for the last six weeks. With shops closed, both said they are largely reliant on humanitarian aid from the local government and nongovernmental organizations for survival.

Humanitarian help helps a lot, said Oleksiy. We are thankful for that, that we are not forgotten.

While attacks on Chasiv Yar have recently intensified, the town has been under fire f...

Is a Drunk Pedestrian Killed by a Driver Something To Care About? Strong Towns Media

(Source: Unsplash/Behzad Ghaffarian.)

A mother took her daughter and niece to the library where they stayed until closing time. When they left, it was raininga chilly December night. Their car was parked in the lot directly across the street. With two young kids in tow, this mother chose the most direct path from the front door to the the closest signalized crossing. One of the cars they tried to dodge when crossing the street was driven by a drunk driver. The driver struck the three of them and the womans daughter was killed.

In Confessions of a Recovering Engineer, I spend thirteen chapters explaining why this tragedy was not the fault of the mother. Emotionally, thats not a difficult case to make, especially to anyone with a reasonable amount of empathy. She lost a childperhaps the most painful thing any mother can endureand Ive found that most people are reluctant to heap blame on such a person. It was not her fault, and most of my readers have been willing to accept my technical evaluation in support of that diagnosis.

I made another, related, argument in Chapter 3 (Whose Mistakes Do We Forgive?) of Confessions that was less universally embraced. I argued that the intoxicated woman driving the car was also not to blame. It was not her fault.

That opinion was not shared by the police who arrived at the scene. Police are trained to evaluate crashes and identify their causes. Their reports include check boxes and prompts to conduct the analysis. Was the driver speeding? Were they intoxicated? Were they wearing a seat belt? Were they distracted by a cell phone or device? Check all that apply.

A Rare Statue of Buddha Fails to Sell at Auction as Questions Swirl Around a Renowned Art Collection Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

The statue of Buddha that was up for sale at Christies auction house was, according to art experts, an early test: Would recent controversy around objects once owned by two prominent Chicago collectors hinder its sale and send a signal about how the art market views the renowned collection?

The answer came quickly. The 7 1/4-inch copper-alloy Buddha from 9th-century Nepal, which had been on loan to the Art Institute of Chicago until last year, failed to sell last week, a Christies spokesperson said.

It never received a bid in the estimated price range of $60,000 to $80,000.

Nobody wants to buy trouble, said Erin Thompson, an associate professor of art crime at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York who has advocated for repatriation of Nepali artifacts. Why would you buy someone elses stolen cultural property?

Although the Christies auction was a single sale of a single object, art experts said it was telling nonetheless. The rare Buddha had been in the collection of James and Marilynn Alsdorf, whose massive art holdings focused on pieces from Nepal and other parts of South and Southeast Asia.

The Christies spokesperson said 63% of the auctions 124 lots found buyers.

The Alsdorfs obtained the Buddha at a time when protocols around collecting were lax, and it was sold to them by a New York dealer who at the end of his career acknowledged engaging in questionable practices. Ethical standards for acquiring antiquities became more strict after a 1970 UNESCO convention prohibited the import of looted cultural property.

The Buddha was on loan to the Art Institute beginning in the late 1990s and was last on display in 2018 at the museum, which has galleries dedicated to the Alsdorfs vast Asian collection. Marilynn Alsdorf, who died in 2019, left much of the collection to the museum. James Alsdorf, who once led the museums board of trustees, died in 1990.

Last week, ProPublica and Crains Chicago Business published...

Charitable Farmer Secretly Paid For Pharmacy Bills For 10 Years True Activist

Azure Edge

They say that good deeds shouldnt be broadcasted. Those who want to help do so because they want to, not for popularity or fame. And nowadays, finding such a kind soul is difficult. There are many out there who help simply because they want to be known.

Still, it comes as a pleasant surprise when we stumble upon a pure-hearted individual who did charity work without ever talking about it. Such is a case with one man. No one knew what he really did for the people of Alabama until he passed.

It was only during the funeral a man named Hody Childress from Geraldine, Alabama, that people finally realized what he had done. They came to know that for a decade, this quiet, kind, and loving man was a guardian angel to the poor and sick people in the area.

Childress was a farmer and U.S. Air Force veteran. This quiet charity campaign of his started when he visited the local Geraldine drugstore. He saw that not too many of the town folk (which was around 900 of them) could afford to purchase the medicines they needed to stay healthy. They had prescriptions from doctors, but unfortunately, they just didnt have the cash.

Acrylate Water Safety Emergency Hits Philly; Residents Scramble for Bottled Water UNICORN RIOT

Philadelphia, PA A warm and sunny Sunday afternoon was suddenly interrupted by an emergency phone alert: Philadelphia authorities warned the city water supply could be endangered and everyone should cease using drinking water after 2 p.m. Eastern time. Within minutes, people headed to grocery, corner and beer stores to grab water jugs and bottles. By 4 p.m. a couple stores Unicorn Riot checked were mostly picked over.

City authorities warned at a Sunday morning news conference that ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate spilled into Otter Creek from a pipe rupture at the Trinseo PLC chemical plant near the Delaware River late Friday night.

The Samuel S. Baxter Water Treatment Plant along the Delaware River has reportedly closed its intakes, and as of 5:30 p.m., city authorities said that the city water supply was still safe to drink. The Philadelphia Water Department advised it is safe to store tap water through Monday night, and advised residents should generally store about 2 days of water per household.

Alarmingly, butyl acrylate was also released in the recent East Palestine, Ohio chemical disaster (EPA files here in PDF, lists butyl and other acrylates in that disaster).

A map from the city this morning clarified that West Philadelphia is ostensibly not impacted, but almost all the city east of the Schuylkill River is affected. A report on Sunday stated the release is estimated at 8,100 gallons, a maximum of 12,000 gallons.

A release from the city at 3:30 p.m. said that the Baxter facility had been sealed off from the river so that water would be safe through the end of Monday until midnight. (The citys homepage for this incident is being regularly updated.)

Bad Server! Freethought Blogs

Ill likely be taking my next Amtrak trip starting on Friday; but a few days ago, a server for Amtraks Positive Train Control system crashed and stayed down for at least three days requiring that, basically, all trains except on Amtraks own Northeast Corridor were cancelled.  Scuttlebutt has it that the server is back up, and it seems that trains are departing from Chicago again.

But what really amazes me is that, apparently, there wasnt a backup.  The system I worked on before I retired was actually four complete systems, one for development, one for system integration testing, one for customer acceptance testing, and one for production.  Each of those had three servers:  one for the Web component, one for the database, and a third for running background tasks.  Each of those servers had at least one backup.  The DEV and SIT systems had one backup for each server; the CAT and PROD systems had four of each server constantly sharing data back and forth so that they were pretty much exact copies of each other.  Thats the way you do it.  Its really old news and well understood.

Another possibility, which also wouldnt surprise me, is that security was so lax that a hacker could have brought the whole thing down for a ransomware attack.  If thats what happened, they probably wont admit it.

In any event, Amtrak could have done better by getting a server from the folks who set up my own little website.  Theyre much more professional, it would seem.

Video: Life Atop a Glacier Freethought Blogs

The main reason that Im convinced that life exists on other planets, is the sheer variety of environments on Earth that shelter life, seemingly against all odds. From the scalding waters of the sharkcano, to lakes entombed in ice, to the corrosive slim of Villa Luz, life finds a way. Todays edition is similar to the Antarctic lake, but its further upstream, on the glaciers that feed such lakes, or that feed into the oceans. Unlike Lake Untersee, these communities are on the surface of the ice, which means a surprisingly diverse community for little puddles in glacial ice:

How do you feel about where you grew up? Freethought Blogs

I cant believe Im even writing this.

I grew up in a conservative rural area in Ohio and I spent most of my childhood counting down the days until I could leave. Its not a friendly place for atheists or for anyone even the slightest bit different. I never fit in even though my family has lived in the area for generations.

After graduating high school, I left for college in the Cleveland area. It wasnt a huge shock living in an urban area for the first time, although people would pick on me for my little country accent. My friends called me fresh off the farm. Still, I thought it was really exciting. I was convinced that I was made to live in the city.

Ive moved around a bit since then even spending some time in Los Angeles.

Ten years ago my husband and I moved to Toledo, a medium-sized city just forty minutes from where I grew up. We live in the middle of the city no suburbs for us and for the most part, its been a great place to live. Im happy to be raising my daughter here.

Lately, however, I have been thinking about home fondly for once. My childhood in the country was actually a lot of fun. My sister and I had a lot of freedom and every day felt like an adventure.

I never regretted leaving, but now I wonder, was it really that bad? Times have changed; maybe its better now.

Since leaving a new highway was built making Toledo a lot more accessible to the outlying rural area. Not to mention advances in technology making it possible to work from anywhere. Im sure that opened up a lot of doors for people back home.

But heres the big question have the attitudes of the people changed back home? Could it ever be a welcoming community?

Maybe its all the country music Ive been listening to lately but its nice to think about home in a positive light after years of resentment. Maybe this just comes with age?

I sometimes get the itch to explore new places, but for now, Toledo is home.

Can you guys relate? What was it like where you grew up? Do you look at it differently now than when you were a kid?

The irony of a creationist moaning about others denying science Freethought Blogs

The Republican legislature in Kentucky assembled a set of those inhumane, ignorant anti-trans laws, and handed it to the Democratic governorwho vetoed it. Good work, Governor Andy Beshear!

Kentuckys Democratic governor issued an election-year veto Friday of a sweeping Republican bill aimed at regulating the lives of transgender youths that includes banning access to gender-affirming health care and restricting the bathrooms they can use.

The bill also bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools and allows teachers to refuse to refer to transgender students by the pronouns they use. It easily passed the GOP-dominated legislature with veto-proof margins, and lawmakers will reconvene next week for the final two days of this years session, when they could vote to override the veto.

Gov. Andy Beshear said in a written veto message that the bill allows too much government interference in personal healthcare issues and rips away the freedom of parents to make medical decisions for their children.

In his one-page message, he warned that the bills repercussions would include an increase in youth suicides. The governor said, My faith teaches me that all children are children of God and Senate Bill 150 will endanger the children of Kentucky.

Wait a minuteKentucky? Who do I know who lives in Kentucky?

Right. You can guess how he responded.

Another politician showing blatant disregard for young people, for science, for parents and for Gods Word by Vetoing legislation he claims would harm children, but the opposite is true.

Children and young people do not have the maturity to make life altering decisions (that are destructive regardless) advocated by the LGBTQ movement. So sad many will destroy their lives because politicians deny the obvious, theres only two genders of humans, male and female. Science confirms it as males have a pair of XY chromosomes and females a pair of XX. And of course, Gods word makes it clear:

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27).

Does anyone else feel stirrings of rage when a know-nothing, superstitious dogmatist like Ken Ham decides to declare what science has determined, and gets it all wrong, while relying on his authority as a preacher to persuade people to accept his views? No? Just...

Three arguments on AI Art Freethought Blogs

Many artists are opposed to AI art, and there seem to be three central arguments. First, that these AI models were trained artists images without their permission. Second, that the use of AI technology endangers the livelihoods of artists. Third, that AI art is bad art. The first is a rights-based argument while the second is a consequentialist argument, and the third is an aesthetic argument.

1. Rights

Starting with the first argument, I think its an open question whether artists truly ought to have the right to be excluded from AI training. If an artist-in-training looked at images on Deviant Art to learn how to draw, we would not say that the artists of Deviant Art had the right to prevent them. If you look at art with an artists eye, youre going to naturally learn from it, and it seems unreasonable to allow people to look at your art just as long as they dont look too deeply, lest they learn something from it.

However, an AI model is substantially distinct from a human artist-in-training, in that it trains on vast number of imagesand also it isnt a person. You could argue that theres no rule against humans because its simply impractical to delineate how they consume art, while its far more practical to restrain AI. AI also poses the risk of accidental plagiarismwhich is not unlike human artists! But the risk of plagiarism might be significantly be higher in AI, which could affect our moral judgment.

Its worth noting that AI trained on images on the internet was already widespread prior to AI art generators. Googles image search and reverse image search are examples of AI. Social platforms like Pinterest are most certainly training their AI recommender systems on images. The main difference is that these older algorithms were used to generate recommendations and search results, not to generate new images.

If its purely a rights issue, why is a recommender algorithm okay, but an image generator not okay? Maybe neither is okay? We could say, recommender algorithms are different, because they draw our attention to artists, while AI art generators displace artists.

But at this point, the argument is no longer based on artists rights, and more about the consequences of using artwork in one way vs another. So lets move on to the second argument, the consequentialist argument.

2. Consequences

I suspect that some artists livelihoods are in fact in danger. And theres a lot of historical precedent for this, with all sorts of technologies either eliminating or greatly reducing certain types of work. In the field of art, people commonly cite the printing press, which destroyed the art of illuminated manuscripts, and photography, which destroyed portraiture.

I would also point to stuff like digital audio workstations (DAWs), vector graphics software, or just wide...

The Question of a Ukraine Agreement Is Not a Question OpEd News

The question of a Ukraine agreement is not a question, for two reasons. One, the warmaking parties want the war to continue. Two, if they were willing to make an agreement, everybody on all sides knows exactly (or darn near exactly) what it would have to be, and always has.

Dammit, Richard Freethought Blogs

So much wrong.

Transcript below the fold.

This is a sad, disappointing video for me. Once again, Richard Dawkins screws up in a television interview, this time with Piers Morgan. His first mistake was appearing on a program with that loutish oaf and pandering to a lot of conservative nonsense without reservation. Morgan is a Catholic of the stupid flavor, and argues with him that a failure of evolution is that no human brain can explain what nothing is, and it all goes downhill from there. I could dwell on the idiocy of much of the conversation, in which Id mainly take Dawkins side, but I wont I think Dawkins should have just walked out on the persistent fool in the first five minutes. I would have.

Then they started on sex. Ill focus on one thing.

[clip: As a biologist, there are two sexes, and thats all there is to it.]

Thats not true. Theres a lot more to it. But I can understand why he said it.

Dawkins reputation is as an eloquent science popularizer, but what he has been popularizing is a strongly reductionist view of biology, favoring a gene-centric perspective that was developed by Hamilton, Trivers, Williams, and Maynard Smith. Its a valid and useful perspective that has been successful in answering questions about evolution. Dawkins gives a great example of this view in the interview when he tries to explain lifes origin.

[clip: replicators]

Hes not wrong. My objection is with that phrase, thats all there is to it. Its a gross oversimplification of both evolution and sex. He has to know that, and if he were pinned down on that phrase something Piers Morgan is ill-equipped to do hed probably squirm uncomfortably and admit that it is a simplification, but a useful one. Id add that it may be useful, but its also incomplete and lazy.

For example: there are two sexes, and thats all there is to it. I can see where hes coming from, thats a common view among many TERFs/Gender Criticals who think its a slam dunk argument to say that there are only two kinds of gametes, eggs and sperm, and therefore there can only be two kinds of sexes. My problem with that is that its incomplete. We are not sperm and eggs. We are not simply gametes, or even meat robots bumbling about with a small package of sperm or eggs, even if that is a metaphor Ive heard scientists use.

As a developmental biologist, the idea that there are only two sexes because there a...

A Powerful Coastal Storm Approaches Cliff Mass Weather Blog

On Monday and Tuesday, a powerful Pacific cyclone will intensify off the northern California/southern Oregon coasts.   A storm that would be notable in mid-winter, but very unusual in late March.

Below is the forecast sea level pressure chart for 2 AM Tuesday morning.  Also shown are the near-surface wind barbs and low-level temperature (shading).

Just wow.   A very deep low-pressure center (985 hPa) with a huge gradient of sea level pressure, which means strong winds.  It almost looks like it has an inner eye!

A simulated cloud field for nearly the same time is downright scary (see below).  As you might suspect, the low center is in the middle of the swirling cloud bands.  Looks like something out of a science-fiction movie.

With such strong pressure gradients (pressure differences over distance), you can expect powerful...

Military Glory: The Ronins Progress Freethought Blogs

[Content warning: violent death]

This is a remarkably rare description, given the alleged frequency with which such incidents occurred. Or, maybe they didnt. In the wild west movies are full of gun-fights, but if you look at the actual history of such incidents, it seems the gun-fights are notable perhaps because of their rarity.

Midjourney AI and mjr: the arrogant samurai stands with his scabbarded sword jutting at an angle.

I can carry my memory back to the days when all samurai wore the two swords and used them as well when necessity arose. When quite a boy I witnessed an exciting duel to the death between two ronin (and unattached samurai) and three samurai. The struggle took place in Kpjimachi ward in the neighborhood of Kudan where the Shokonsha now stands. Before proceeding with my narrative I ought to explain for the benefit of my foreign listeners (there were two of us present besides another Japanese gentleman) the usage of the old feudal days in order that the incident I am about to describe may be better understood.  The sword of the samurai, as you know, was a possession valued higher than life itself, and if you touched a samurais sword, you touched his dignity. It was deemed an act of unpardonable rudeness in those days for one samurai to allow the tip of his scabbard to come into contact with the scabbard of another samurai as the men passed each other in the street; such an act was styled saya-ate (saya = scabbard, ate = to strike against) and in the absence of a prompt apology from the offender a fight almost always ensued. The samurai carried two swords, the long and the short, which were thrust into the obi, or sash, on the left-hand side in such a manner that the sheath of the longer weapon stuck out behind the owners back. This being the case it frequently happened, especially in a crowd, that two scabbards would touch each other without deliberate intent on either side, although samurai who were not looking for trouble of this kind always took the precaution to hold the swords with the point downwards and as close to their sides as possible. But should a contretemps of this description occur the parties could on no account allow it to pass unnoticed. One or both would at once demand satisfaction, and the challenge was rarely refused. The high sense of honor which prevailed...

Cigna executives caught in legally gray cash grab Freethought Blogs

The fight over Obamacare was probably the first time I really came face to face with the corruption and dysfunction of our government, when it came to domestic policy. The Republicans, of course, had launched the scorched-earth obstructionism that has become their default when out of power, and Obama seemed to be looking for excuses to make concessions. Single-payer healthcare was taken off the table before negotiations even began, but of course that didnt stop the GOP for ranting about how Obama was a Muslim socialist who would set up death panels to kill your grandparents (the GOP base). Its ironic, but not surprising that in the years since, weve literally seen Republicans calling for senior citizens to die for the economy. Remember, kids, every conservative accusation is actually a confession.

It was Obamas unwillingness to actually fight for a good healthcare system that really infuriated me. After it became obvious that taking single payer off the table won him zero credit or respect, he should have started playing hardball for a public option, as something to give up for a conservative concession if nothing else, but he refused to do that either. It was the same pattern we see today the Democratic president says he wants to do something, but the right-wing members of his party have sided with the GOP, and wont allow it, so theres just nothing to be done. Seeing that same pattern play out again and again, even with a veteran politician like Biden, is part of why Ive become convinced that the leadership of the Democratic Party has never intended to follow through on its promises to the left.

Even so, the fact remains that the Affordable Care Act really is an improvement over what came before. If you want an overview of that delightful arrangement, check out Michael Moores 2017 documentary Sicko. The problem is, while the ACA put limits on the ways that health insurers could scam their customers, it did not come close to solving the inherent problem of for-profit health insurance its a parasitic middleman of an industry, whose profit comes from refusing to pay for healthcare.

Probably the nicest thing about leaving the United States was no longer having to deal with that countrys healthcare system. For all the improvements made under Obama, its still overpriced, and still riddled with traps and loopholes that force people to pay out of pocket for their own care, despite spending hundreds or thousands per month for insurance to avoid precisely that. The paperwork was also hel...
