A Front Company and a Fake Identity: How the U.S. Came to Use Spyware It Was Trying to Kill [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The secret contract was finalized on Nov. 8, 2021, a deal between a company that has acted as a front for the United States government and the American affiliate of a notorious Israeli hacking firm. Under the arrangement, the Israeli firm, NSO Group, gave the U.S. government access to one of its most powerful weapons a geolocation tool that can covertly track mobile phones around the world without the phone user's knowledge or consent. Only five days earlier, the Biden administration had announced it was taking action against NSO, whose hacking tools for years had been abused by governments around the world to spy on political dissidents, human rights activists and journalists. The White House placed NSO on a Commerce Department blacklist, declaring the company a national security threat. The secret contract ... violates the Biden administration's public policy, and still appears to be active. The contract, reviewed by The Times, stated that the "United States government" would be the ultimate user of the tool, although it is unclear which government agency authorized the deal and might be using the spyware. Elements of America's expansive national security apparatus in recent years have bought the weapons, deployed them against drug traffickers, and have quietly pushed to consolidate control of them into the hands of the United States and its closest allies. The F.B.I. purchased access in 2019 to NSO's most powerful hacking tool, known as Pegasus, which invades mobile phones and mines their contents.

Censorship by Proxy: How Big Tech Censors Global News Platforms [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Big Tech giants and their oligarchic owners now engage in a new type of censorship, which we have called "censorship by proxy." Censorship by proxy describes restrictions on freedom of information undertaken by private corporations that exceed limits on governmental censorship and serve both corporate and government or third-party interests. Censorship by proxy is not subject to venerable First Amendment proscriptions on government interference with freedom of speech or freedom of the press. Censorship by proxy alerts us to the power of economic entities that are not normally recognized as "gatekeepers." For example, in 2022, the digital financial service PayPal (whose founders include Peter Thiel and Elon Musk) froze the accounts of Consortium News and MintPress News for "unspecified offenses" and "risks" associated with their accounts, a ruling that prevented both independent news outlets from using funds maintained by PayPal. Consortium News and MintPress News have each filed critical news stories and commentary on the foreign policy objectives of the United States and NATO. PayPal issued notices to each news outlet, stating that, in addition to suspending their accounts, it might also seize their assets for "damages."  Joe Lauria, editor in chief of Consortium News, said he believed this was a case of "ideological policing." Mnar Adley, head of MintPress News, warned, "The sanctions-regime war is coming home to hit the bank accounts of watchdog journalists."

Pentagon Tries to Cast Bank Runs as National Security Threat [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In recent months, the Pentagon has moved to provide loans, guarantees, and other financial instruments to technology companies it considers crucial to national security a step beyond the grants and contracts it normally employs. So when Silicon Valley Bank threatened to fail in March following a bank run, the defense agency advocated for government intervention to insure the investments. The Pentagon had even scrambled to prepare multiple plans to get cash to affected companies if necessary, reporting by Defense One revealed. Their interest in Silicon Valley Bank stems from the Pentagon's brand-new office, the Office of Strategic Capital. The secretary of defense established the OSC in December specifically to counteract the investment power of adversaries like China in U.S. technologies, and to secure separate funding for companies whose products are considered vital to national security. The national security argument for bailout, notably, found an influential friend in the Senate. As the Biden administration intervened to protect Silicon Valley Bank depositors on March 12, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who chairs the powerful Senate Intelligence Committee and also sits on the Banking Committee, issued a press release warning that the bank run posed a national security risk. Warner the only member of Congress to have publicly tied SVB to national security has received significant contributions from the financial sector. Since 2012, Warner has received over $21,000 from Silicon Valley Bank's super PAC.

US Army awards Lockheed up to $4.5 bln missiles contract [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) said on Monday the U.S. Army has awarded a multi-year production contract for Joint-Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM) and HELLFIRE missiles, in a deal that could go up to $4.5 billion including follow-on awards. The contract, which will have a total value of $439 million in its first year, is among the first multi-year awards for precision munitions, as the Pentagon looks to build stocks in the hopes of deterring China. In March, President Joe Biden requested $842 billion for the Pentagon and $44 billion for defense-related programs at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Energy and other agencies. The 2024 budget proposal is $28 billion more than last year's $858 billion. Lockheed added the contract also offers three additional follow-on awards which will start in late 2023, allowing for a total contract value of up to $4.5 billion over the next four years. The JAGM program anticipates a "significant increase" in international demand for the weapon system, Lockheed said.

Note: Many benefit financially from warfare when it comes to provoking proxy wars and furthering U.S. agendas of full-spectrum dominance, as thoroughly explored in the book War is a Racket by the highly decorated general Smedley D. Butler. According to a revealing report, at least 47 members of Congress and their spouses hold between $2 million and $6.7 million worth of stock in Lockheed Martin and other companies that are among the top 100 defense contractors.

Who Controls How We Remember the Iraq War? [WantToKnow.info: All News]

As mainstream U.S. media outlets pause to remember the U.S. invasion of Iraq, it's clear that there's a lot they hope we'll forget first and foremost, the media's own active complicity in whipping up public support for the war. But the more you dig into mainstream news coverage from that period ... the harder it is to forget how flagrantly news networks across the broadcast and cable landscape uncritically spread the Bush administration's propaganda and actively excluded dissenting voices. A 2003 report by the media watchdog Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) found that in the two weeks leading up to the invasion, ABC World News, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, and the PBS Newshour featured a total of 267 American experts, analysts, and commentators on camera to supposedly help make sense of the march to war. Of these 267 guests, an astounding 75% were current or former government or military officials, and a grand total of one expressed any skepticism. The bedrock democratic principle of an independent, adversarial press was simply tossed out the window. "Often journalists blame the government for the failure of the journalists themselves to do independent reporting," [author Norman] Solomon says. "But nobody forced the major networks like CNN to do so much commentary from retired generals and admirals and all the rest of it. That really runs directly counter to the idea of an independent press."

Warmongers in Congress Use Tik-Tok to Justify Aggression towards China [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Last Thursday, a Congressional hearing took place where the TikTok CEO was grilled for five hours on the grounds of "security concerns." This was days after the FBI and DOJ launched an investigation on the Chinese-owned American company. Isn't it ironic that while the US government is putting TikTok under the magnifying glass, it's turning a blind eye to its own surveillance programs on the American people? [It was] only last year that the post-9/11 NSA phone surveillance program was reported to have shut down. Major telecom companies like Verizon gave the government access to hundreds of millions of calls and texts. Dataminr, a startup Twitter partner, provided police with data about BLM protests. One focus on 'potential gang members' targeted Black and Latinx people, including school-aged children. Meta's subsidiary WhatsApp was reportedly used by the Saudi government to hack journalist Jamal Khashoggi's phone. Meanwhile, Meta itself used a VPN to spy on users' smartphones for market research in exchange for bribes. Yet WhatsApp is not banned on government devices. Unlike China as well as other Western countries, such as the EU, the US does not have any digital privacy laws on the federal level. The US could cooperate with China to better ensure people's privacy is protected, instead of driving fear to target one single social media platform. The ongoing effort to investigate and ban TikTok is not about our privacy, but about fueling more aggression against China.

Congressional Effort to End Assange Prosecution Underway [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., is circulating a letter among her House colleagues that calls on the Department of Justice to drop charges against Julian Assange and end its effort to extradite him from his detention in Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom. The Justice Department has charged Assange, the publisher of WikiLeaks, for publishing classified information. The Obama administration had previously decided not to prosecute Assange, concerned with what was dubbed internally as the "New York Times problem." The Times had partnered with Assange when it came to publishing classified information and itself routinely publishes classified information. Publishing classified information is a violation of the Espionage Act, though it has never been challenged in the Supreme Court, and constitutional experts broadly consider that element of the law to be unconstitutional. The Obama administration could not find a way to charge Assange without also implicating standard journalistic practices. The Trump administration, unburdened by such concerns around press freedom, pushed ahead with the indictment and extradition request. The Biden administration, driven by the zealous prosecutor Gordon Kromberg, has aggressively pursued Trump's prosecution. Tlaib noted that the Times, The Guardian, El Pas, Le Monde, and Der Spiegel had put out a joint statement condemning the charges, and alluded to the same problem that gave the Obama administration pause.

US Virgin Islands subpoenas four top businessmen in Epstein banking inquiry [WantToKnow.info: All News]

A US Virgin Islands investigations into the sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein's ties to an American bank issued subpoenas to four wealthy business leaders on Friday, extending its reach into the highest echelons of tech, hospitality and finance. The subpoenas issued to the Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Hyatt Hotels chairperson Thomas Pritzker, American-Canadian businessman Mortimer Zuckerman and former CAA talent agency chairperson Michael Ovitz are crafted to gather more information about Epstein's relationship with JPMorgan Chase. The Virgin Islands' lawsuit against JP Morgan, the world's largest bank in terms of assets, alleges that the institution "facilitated and concealed wire and cash transactions that raised suspicion of and were in fact part of a criminal enterprise whose currency was the sexual servitude of dozens of women and girls in and beyond the Virgin Islands". "Human trafficking was the principal business of the accounts Epstein maintained at JP Morgan," it said. The disgraced financier ... owned two private islands Little Saint James, or "Epstein Island", and Great Saint James in the American territory, and authorities there have secured a $105m settlement from his estate. The demand for any communications and documents related to the bank and Epstein from four of the wealthiest people in the US comes days after it was reported that Jamie Dimon, JP Morgan's chairperson and chief executive, is expected to be deposed in the case.

20 Years After Illegal US Invasion of Iraq, Its Architects Are Still Cashing In [WantToKnow.info: All News]

It had been 15 years since the U.S. invaded Iraq when, on March 19, 2018, the celebrated Iraqi novelist and poet Sinan Antoon published a blistering op-ed in The New York Times. He took readers through his observations of the steady deterioration of Iraqi society since the war began, but the most scathing words came toward the end. "No one knows for certain how many Iraqis have died as a result of the invasion 15 years ago," Antoon wrote. "Some credible estimates put the number at more than one million. You can read that sentence again. The invasion of Iraq is often spoken of in the United States as a 'blunder,' or even a 'colossal mistake.' It was a crime. Those who perpetrated it are still at large." That the invasion was not just a moral catastrophe but an egregious war crime has been echoed by everyone from United Nations heads to human rights leaders. With the 20th anniversary of the invasion now approaching, the sanitizing of the war's major culprits or, at the very least, the soft forgetting of their crimes continues. As the very top decision-makers faded into retirement, the next layer of war pushers, enablers and overseers the top defense and national security officials and the celebrity generals went on to profit immensely following their leadership of an illegal war, darting through the revolving door to snag coveted corporate board seats and prestigious university appointments. Many of them remain in these positions with defense industry giants, tech firms and Wall Street investors today.

Two Decades and $90 Billion US Dollars Later: Dissecting the Afghan Military's Total Collapse [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In February, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) published an extensive investigation into the spectacular collapse of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces' (ANDSF), which the U.S. spent two decades and $90 billion building. In common with previous SIGAR reports, it offers a remarkably uncompromising, no-punches-pulled assessment, exposing corruption, incompetence, lies, and delusion every step of the way. The Pentagon and State Department rejected SIGAR's jurisdiction over them, declined to review interim drafts of the report, denied access to their staff, and "mostly" refused to answer requests for information. The Afghan government and military, their trainers and the Pentagon alike were all heavily incentivized to lie to one another, and political leaders in Washington, who were in turn motivated to mislead the public. As prior SIGAR reports also found, so much money and equipment were flowing into Afghanistan without any supervision whatsoever, and weaponry and other aid were misused, stolen or illegally sold off with ease by Afghans, U.S. personnel and Pentagon contractors. SIGAR ominously warns that a similar absence of accountability is evident in the "unprecedented" U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine since Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022. Despite U.S. leaders promising a keen eye is being kept on the weapons shipments, SIGAR's report makes clear these same officials did not even know what was being sent to Afghanistan. Is the same true for Kiev?

How Nelson Mandela's former prison guard is keeping his legacy alive [WantToKnow.info: All News]

"Nelson Mandela I'd never heard the name before in my life," a former prison guard to the South African icon recalls. Christo Brand casts his mind back to 1978, and his first night guarding one of the most influential people of the past century. He was just 19 years old. A sergeant informed him the ageing man sleeping uncomfortably on the floor of the Robben Island jail cell was "a terrorist trying to overthrow your country". Mr Brand ... soon became close with Mandela. He began to spend days and nights with Mandela, who he says remained charming even after some 16 years as prisoner 466/64. In time he saw virtue in the older man's crimes. Reflecting after years at Mandela's side, years in which he saw his friend slowly but surely topple the old order, Mr Brand says: "Mandela was fighting for the freedom of the country, he was prepared to go to the gallows for freedom for his people". "When Mandela was in prison," Mr Brand says, "he studied Martin Luther King and Gandhi, he tried to follow their footsteps and try to bring a change." In his memoir Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela hints at why he kept his prison officer at his side even after being freed. Mr Brand, he writes, "reinforced my belief in the essential humanity even of those who had kept me behind bars". Mandela emerged from prison in 1990 already negotiating with South Africa's leadership for the changes that would see the country's first democratic election a few years later.

How Peace Activists Are Beating the U.S. Military at its Own (Video) Game [WantToKnow.info: All News]

In 2018, the military, struggling to meet enlistment goals, began invading gaming communities as part of a larger, digital-first strategy. Recruiters who had once stalked school assemblies and shopping malls began streaming games on social media and competing in tournaments to court new enlistees online. Since then, the military's online recruiting strategy has expanded to the Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch, which attracts 140 million active users per month. The Army, Navy, and Air Force churn out hours of Twitch content per week, including streams of popular first-person-shooter games. The Armed Forces claim their gamers ... aren't technically recruiters. But anti-war advocates say they might as well be. To counter this, [Marine veteran Chris] Velazquez became a community developer for Gamers for Peace (GFP), the first peace organization formed to mirror the military's online recruiting practices: While streaming popular games like Halo and Rocket League, its membersmany of them veteransoffer career advice and mentorship to teens, talk politics, and discuss the realities of war. They also share information about online military recruitment tactics at in-person gaming conventions such as PAX Unplugged. These initiatives, members say, give prospective recruits the tools and knowledge to see other options and reconsider enlisting. The group has already accrued nearly 600 Twitch followers as well as 400 members on the popular messaging service Discord.

New Mobile Phone Service Shows We Can Have Both Privacy and Nice Thing [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The recent launch of a new mobile phone service introduced significant new privacy protections into the mobile phone system. This exciting new approach highlights the failure of the existing mobile phone infrastructure to protect privacy, and points the way forward for a wide variety of technologies. Today's cellphones are generally a privacy disaster. Partly that's the result of the two companies that control the operating system software on the vast majority of the world's pocket computers. In order for your carrier to route calls and data to your phone, the network needs to constantly know which cell tower your phone is near. And when you make a call or use data, the provider can see where that traffic is going. Cell carriers track and store this accidental byproduct of the technology in order to record people's location history and network activity for marketing purposes and, in certain circumstances, for sharing with law enforcement. The new phone service, called Pretty Good Phone Privacy (PGPP), uses encryption techniques to deliberately blind itself so that it can't know that the user of a mobile device is you, or what data you are sending from that phone. You connect to the PGPP service for payment, and that's all. With PGPP's approach, the carrier simply does not have the data to turn over to anyone. It cannot be sold, leaked, or hacked, let alone offered to overreaching law enforcement agencies. Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and their smaller competitors could be offering such a privacy-protecting service, but don't want to.

Colorado Housing Bill Targets Local Zoning, Spurs City-State Standoff Strong Towns Media

Townhome-style units from Mosaica, a new housing development in Colorado Springs, CO. (Source: Mosaica.)

Colorado Governor Jared Polis and state legislative leaders have introduced an ambitious plan to address the states housing crisis. The new land use bill would bar local communities from banning duplexes, triplexes, certain multiplexes, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and expand housing construction options near transit stops. Sponsors of the legislation say it will remove barriers to creating new housing, many of which are caused by single-family zoning, and allow more building types that fall in the category of missing-middle housing.

We're at a real inflection point here where we need a smart plan, in an inter-jurisdictional way, for more housing, for rent and for purchase, close to where jobs are and along transit lines with opportunities for people to get where they want to go, Polis told Colorado Public Radio.

Colorados population grew 15.1% between 2010 and 2021. With a net gain of 764,530 new residents, it has struggled to accommodate the growth, and the problem takes different contours throughout the state. Denver and Boulder are grappling with the broader question of where to put all the new residents, while Colorados appealing mountain towns have become so popular that rising property values are driving out workers who can no longer afford to rent or own them.

The Renfield protocol Freethought Blogs

They dont tell you about the dirty jobs involved in spider care. Last week, I fed all the adults nice big juicy mealworms, which they promptly killed and then spent several days sucking on their vital fluids. Even when theyre very thorough in their consumption, though, they still leave behind a sack of chitin with organic leftovers inside.

Then it rots.

It rots thoroughly, turning black and soft and turning hairy with fungus. It has a sulfurous reek to it, as well. Then the spiders turn to me and peremptorily demand, Renfield! Oh, Renfield! Do clean up the rotting corpses, will you? Thats a good Renfield.

Renfield is me, if you havent figured that out. This morning I got to go through all the cages and pluck out decaying mealworms with a pair of forceps. This is my job. That, and regularly bringing them fresh bodies to turn into rotting corpses.

Oh well. I also got to play with my shiny new camera and take photos of my masters.

Youll have to go to Instagram or Patreon if you want to see photos. (Hmm, I didnt do a very good job of promoting those links with all this talk of decaying corpses, did I)

From Peak to Plummet in 15 Years: Coal Continues Its Precipitous Decline WhoWhatWhy

Not long ago, coal was booming in the United States. The countrys power generators used more of that fuel in 2007 than ever before a little over 1 billion tons. Four years later, the generating capacity of the nations coal-fired power plants peaked at 318 gigawatts, enough electricity for 238 million homes.

But over the last decade, the US energy sector has made a dramatic pivot away from the greenhouse gas-spewing fossil fuel. Research shows it continues to do so at an astonishing pace. Nearly half of the generating capacity seen in 2011 is expected to vanish by the end of 2026, according to a report published Monday by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, a nonprofit think-tank focused on the global energy transition. The analysis also found that coal use by US electric-power producers could hit just 400 million tons this year. And roughly 40 percent of the countrys current coal-fired capacity is set to close by 2030.

People were not predicting it was going to happen that quickly, Seth Feaster, the reports author and a data analyst at the institute, told Grist. This is a long-term structural decline. This is not an economic cycle that is simply going to go away. It is a real phaseout across the industry of the use of coal.

The countrys current coal-fired electricity capacity is 184 gigawatts. Thats down 42 percent from the 318 gigawatts produced in 2011. As another 173 coal-fired power plants close or stop using coal in coming years, capacity is projected to hit 116 gigawatts by 2030.

Coals precipitous decline has resulted in large part from the natural gas boom and the rise of renewable energy. Their falling costs owing to technological innovations and government incentives, like those in the Inflation Reduction Act have made it cheaper to replace 99 percent of operating US coal plants with solar and wind farms, according to a recent study from climate and energy think-tank Energy Innovation. Last year, ...

What to do if you get bitten by a snake Freethought Blogs

Sri Lanka has a lot of snakes, many species of which, like cobras, are venomous. There is also a lot of folklore surrounding them and many of them likely originated as tales made up to scare the daylights out of children, like ghost stories. I vividly recall one story that was told about the Russels viper. The story was that if anyone in your household encountered a viper and killed it (and killing a poisonous snake was often the chosen method of getting rid of them), then seven other vipers would come to your home and they would hang like a chain from the rafters of the roof if your house did not have a ceiling or from a fixture, each one clasping the tail of the other, until they lowest one reached you where you were sleeping and bit you. Needless to say, that story was enough to give small children sleepless nights.

As children, we did not question the validity of this preposterous theory and the fact that it seemed like it required a lot of coordination and hard work by the vipers just to get at you when they could instead easily have have waited for you by hiding in the grass or under some furniture until you passed by before striking, even allowing for the improbability that there existed some kind of viper committee that organized these revenge attacks and recruited members to carry them out, like some kind of commando snake strike force. There was something so frightening about the idea of snakes slowly lowering themselves down from the roof at night while you slept that it banished any critical inquiry.

There is also a lot of folklore about what to do if you do happen to get by a snake, as this article lays out. First off, it reassuringly says that rather than immediately succumbing to an agonizing end, you are very unlikely to die.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 7,000 and 8,000 people in the U.S. are bitten by venomous snakes each year. And of those who are bitten, only about 5 percent die.

To put that in perspective, around 40,000 people die in car accidents each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The article says that prompt medical attention is the best response to avoid death.

Stay calm and get to the hospital as soon as possible. The best first aid for snake bites is already in almost everyones pocket: a cell phone. If a snake bites you or you are with someone who is, call 911 immediately and let the pros handle it.

While waiting for the EMT heroes to arrive, carefully follow the dispatchers instructions. The CDC advises washing the wound with soap and water and keeping the bite area below the hearts level.

You can take a picture of the...

What are they teaching in journalism school nowadays? Freethought Blogs

Another mass murder by an asshole with a rifle, on a day ending with the letter y. But this article! Jesus!

The suspect in a Monday morning massacre at a Louisville bank has been identified as a 23-year-old former varsity hoops star and finance grad-turned-banker who livestreamed the horrific attack.

Louisville Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel identified the suspect as Connor Sturgeon, who worked at Old National Banks downtown Louisville branch.

Gwinn-Villaroel said Sturgeon was livestreaming as he used a rifle to open fire at about 8:38 a.m. in the Old National Bank Building, which houses the bank and a variety of other businesses, killing four people and injuring nine more, including three police officers. Sturgeon was killed after exchanging gunfire with officers, she said, but its unclear if he was killed by police or by self-inflicted gunshots.

The article briefly mentions the victims by name, but after that, its got a more important job to do. It spends 22 fucking paragraphs going on and on about what a nice normal guy the killer was. The governor of Kentucky has to tell us what an incredible friend he was, they interview old high school friends and buddies from his college fraternity, they reach the depths of banality by getting a quote from the husband of a neighbor.

Sturgeon seemed like a real normal dude, every day hed wave to me, Allgeiers husband, Michael, added.

What the fuck? The mass murderer was known to sometimes wave to people? This is news? I learned nothing from it other than that the killer was otherwise a mundane person who lived an ordinary, if privileged, life before going on a shooting rampage. The article says nothing about the victims, short of naming them, and should have been slashed to bits by an editor before publishing.

And it took three reporters to cobble together this unquestioning story about a bad man.

I hope they feel a little bit of shame today.

What meritocracy? Freethought Blogs

Elon Musk is doing a fine job of wrecking the reputation (what there was of it) of rich people. Heres his idea of a clever joke.

Juvenile. Stupid. He bought this thing for $44 billion, and now he spends all his time mocking it and literally deprecating it. He threw away over $20 billion so far, and is determined to destroy all the rest.

Worse is what hes doing to Matt Taibbi. I dont much care for Taibbi hes also juvenile and gullible but he was defending Musk, incompetently, and was paid by Musk to fire off that damp squib called the Twitter Files, but now Musk is cutting off Substack, where Taibbi makes his money, and has gone so far as to shadow ban Taibbi on Twitter.

Musk is a petty 3 year old child. I browsed his Twitter feed to see whats going on in his brain, and even his deep thoughts are shallow and trivial. Like this one:

Wait, what? Your left arm is the same age as your right, and the two are genetically identical, and typically have similar environmental exposure. How is this an example of precision? How does this tell us that aging can be fixed?

AlthoughI did once meet a man, a truck driver, whose left arm was ruddy, scaly, and weathered, while his right was pale and smooth. He liked driving with the side window down, and his left arm resting on the door. I guess Ive cured aging, then simply stay out of the sun.

Can a Stadium Save Philadelphias Dead Zone? Strong Towns Media

A proposed stadium in downtown Philadelphia. (Source: 76 Place.)

Strong Towns President Chuck Marohn once described stadiums as the universal sign of economic desperation. At the time, he was referring to a soccer stadium hugged by two highway ramps on the waterfront of Chester, Pennsylvania. The ramps were meant to service the stadium, and the stadium the ramps, according to elected officials who spoke in support of one or both projects. In the case of Chester, both promised an explosion of economic development which ultimately materialized in the form of the city filing for bankruptcy 10 years later. Nevertheless, elected leaders across the country continue to look to stadiums, casinos, headquarters, and similar megaprojects as means of revitalizing downtown.

One project gaining controversy in recent weeks is the proposed construction of an arena in the middle of Philadelphia. At a cost of $1.3 billion, the team behind 76 Placecolloquially referred to as the Sixers Arenapromises to revitalize Center City, otherwise known as Philadelphias downtown. The exact location, Market East, is blocks from city hall and some of the citys most trafficked destinations, such as Reading Terminal Market, retail on Chestnut Street, and Chinatown. At the same time, Market East has baffled local officials, developers, and business owners alike for being a dead zone, evidenced by the rows of shuttered shops lining  the most transit-rich location in all of Philadelphia

For champions of the Sixers Arena, Market Easts reputatio...

The EPA Faces Questions About Its Approval of a Plastic-Based Fuel With an Astronomical Cancer Risk Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

The Environmental Protection Agency is facing a lawsuit filed by a community group and questions from a U.S. senator over the agencys approval of fuels made from discarded plastic under a program it touted as climate-friendly.

The new scrutiny is in response to an earlier investigation by ProPublica and the Guardian that revealed the EPA approved the new chemicals even though its own scientists calculated that pollution from production of one of the plastic-based fuels was so toxic that 1 in 4 people exposed to it over their lifetime would be expected to develop cancer. That risk is 250,000 times greater than the level usually considered acceptable by the EPA division that approves new chemicals, and its higher than the lifetime risk of cancer for current smokers.

On Friday, a community organization sued the EPA in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., over the agencys decision to allow a Chevron refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to produce the fuels derived from plastic waste, including the one that could subject people nearby to a 1-in-4 lifetime cancer risk. Cherokee Concerned Citizens, which represents residents in a housing subdivision close to that refinery, is asking the court to invalidate the EPAs approval of the new chemicals.

Earlier in the week, the chair of the U.S. Senate subcommittee that oversees chemical safety questioned the head of the EPA over the agencys approval of those fuels. Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, told EPA Administrator Michael Regan in a letter sent on Wednesday that he found what ProPublica and the Guardian discovered especially troubling.

While it is urgent that our country takes actions to address cl...

Seawater Can Be A Source For Clean Hydrogen Fuel And Researchers Discovered The Process True Activist

Bic Magazine

Australia is an island nation that has its own set of talented researchers. Just recently, a group of them have been able to successfully split seawater to produce green hydrogen, and this was done without pre-treatment and filtering.

An international chemical engineering team that worked under the University of Adelaides Professor Shizhang Qiao and Associate Professor Yao Zheng, were motivated by one fact, and that is that the only thing emitted by hydrogen fuel is actually water.

We have split natural seawater into oxygen and hydrogen with nearly 100 percent efficiency, to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis, using a non-precious and cheap catalyst in a commercial electrolyzer, Professor Qiao said when he talked about their discovery.

We used seawater as a feedstock without the need for any pre-treatment processes like reverse osmosis desolation, purification, or alkalization, Associate Professor Zheng also said.

The team reports the findings and said that they discovered the performance of their seawater with catalysts of coba...

Super Rainshadow Cliff Mass Weather Blog

The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the best rainshadows in the world:  areas of dry conditions downstream of terrain barriers.

And on Sunday we were treated to one of the best examples of such features, in the lee (northeast) of the Olympic Mountains.

As many of you know, when air approaches a barrier, it is forced to rise, producing clouds and precipitation (see figure below), and when it sinks on the downstream side, the air descends, warms by compression, and drys out.

This is where the rainshadow is found.

On Sunday, strong south/southwesterly flow was approaching the Olympics (see a map of winds around 11 AM Sunday).  Thus, the sinking air was on the northeast side of the Olympics.

Ben Shapiro Defends Harlan Crow Freethought Blogs

Lets have a conversation about Shapiros defence of Harlan Crow:

Well, but you kind of miss the point there, Shapiro, dear boy, dont you? Its certainly unusual for people to surround themselves with reminders of the things that they hate, but its also something that a human being could do. So far, youre not wrong.

But heres the thing: If you surround yourself with things that evoke hatred in you, then your feelings are feelings of hatred and your thoughts are thoughts of hatred. And your hateful thoughts will inevitably spawn hateful ideas. Those hateful ideas will become hateful policies that you invent or support or even adopt because of your hatred.

And thats the ball game.

If your thoughts are thoughts of hatred and your policies are policies of hatred, then your government is a government of hatred and at that point you can call your movement whatever it is you like. You can even name yourselves the IZANs for all the good it will do. A government of hatred, acting against the people it hates, is a government indistinguishable from Stalins or Hitlers.

Even under your theory, Ben, Harlan Crow is a Nazi.

Link Roundup: April 2023 Freethought Blogs

Some links on AI art I included some of these shoutouts in my comment section, but might as well include in my link roundup as well.  The reason I was thinking about AI art was because Great American Satan has been writing in its defense.  I also saw a video by Jack Saint (21 min), which was in opposition to AI art, but also concluded that the problem was capitalism.  I thought one of the interesting points Jack Saint made was about the use of AI in animation, which is an art form that arguably takes too much work.  Most people will basically never animate anything, and when people like Jack Saint do solo animation projects, it can take a major toll.  This is why Im not very convinced by the idea that AI makes things too easy.  Maybe it makes some things too easy, but other things it could make more reasonably easy.

Adastra: The Best Furry Visual Novel Made Me Come Out as Gay and Now You Have to Hear About It | Keith Ballard (video, 3:14 hours) So, funny story.  I thought Id watch some Myst Lets Plays so I could see what I remembered wrong about the series.  And I got sidetracked because the player was obviously a furry and probably gay.  Clearly thats what Myst was missingfurries.

Anyway, this is the sort of media analysis that includes a summary of the visual novel being discussedthats why its so long.  Adastra is a political drama where the player character is abducted to an alien society and participates in a contest between two successors to the throne.  Its also an 18+ romance.  It sounds like this story has a great alignment of text and subtext: the characters are literally gay, but also metaphorically gay in their relation to society.  Despite the common prejudice against furries, some of the smut they write just sounds so sincere and wholesome.

Research suggests were on track for 3 degrees Freethought Blogs

Have I mentioned that I think were being too slow in our response to climate change? I feel like its come up. Were not moving fast enough. We need to end fossil fuel use far, far faster than the current rate, and that is not going to happen if we care more about corporate profits than human survival. Now, I suppose I should say that this is based on the modeling of a research group, and it isnt currently the consensus that were headed for three degrees of warming. Im willing to bet that most climate scientists would agree that we are, or that three degrees is optimistic, but I couldnt cite you a source on that. What I can cite is this report saying that its likely that thats the trajectory were on:

More and more countries are promising that they will phase out coal from their energy systems, which is positive. But unfortunately, their commitments are not strong enough. If we are to have a realistic chance of meeting the 2-degree target, the phasing out of coal needs to happen faster, and countries that rely on other fossil fuels need to increase their transition rate, says Aleh Cherp, professor at the International Environmental Institute at Lund University.

The phasing out of coal is a necessity to keep the worlds temperature increase below 2 degrees, compared to pre-industrial levels. In a study by Mistra Electrification, a group of researchers has analyzed 72 countries pledged commitments to phase out their coal use by 2022-2050.

In the best case scenarios, the researchers show that it is possible that the temperature increase will stay below 2 degrees. But that assumes, among other things, that both China and India begin phasing out their coal use within five years. Furthermore, their phase-out needs to be as rapid as it has been in the UK and faster than Germany has promised.

The research group has also developed scenarios that they consider to be the most realistic. These scenarios indicate that Earth is moving towards a global warming of 2.5-3 degrees.

The countries commitments are not sufficient, not even among the most ambitious countries. In addition, Russias invasion of Ukraine risks jeopardizing several of the countries commitments, says Jessica Jewell, Associate professor at Physical Resource Theory, Chalmers University of Technology.

And Bidens not really helping, either.

To say Im disappointed would be to imply that I expected better. I suppose I did expect better, a couple decades ago, but world leaders have taught me...

Cats in the Trenches: A View From Ukraines Frontlines WhoWhatWhy

DONETSK, Ukraine An open field and a few rows of trees separate Ukraines First Tank Brigade from Russian forces in the Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Explosions can be heard in the distance these are the front lines of the war. Walking through the trenches, the soldiers joke with one another, trying to find some lightheartedness as they prepare for the next morning, when they believe Russian forces will launch a strike, and they will be face to face with an enemy that is right now less than two miles away.

It is a cold day when I visit the soldiers of the First Tank Brigade in their trenches. The ground has begun to thaw in eastern Ukraine, creating mounds of mud that cause people to slip with nearly every step. In the trenches, men test out a long-range gun and prepare for the next day. They have been fighting together since the beginning of the war and have become a family. Tomorrow, the First Panzer Brigades 25 infantry will face 50 Russian soldiers at around 9 a.m.

First Panzer Brigade, test weapon

Members of Ukraines First Panzer Brigade test a long-range gun in the Donetsk Oblast. Photo credit: Anna Conkling / WhoWhatWhy

But for now, it is quiet. The designated sleeping area is a dug-out room in the trenches filled with sleeping bags and a makeshift wooden cupboard for food. Here, a 44-year-old soldier named Volodymyr introduced me to the troops two kittens, who are lying on the bed. This is our joy, who brings us peace and calm, he said. Because in our soul, they really calm us down.

The war has reached a critical turning point in recent weeks. Russia has made significant advances on the besieged town of Bakhmut, a three-hour drive from where the First Tank Brigade sits, and there is still uncertainty as to what will come of the months-long battle.

Looking around at his surroundings, lit by a lantern, water dripping from the ceiling, Volodymr smirked. This is how we live. This [is] our kitchen, he said, pointing to the cupboard. Here we have bread. Here we keep the food. Here, these are the rations were given. He pointed to a small wooden carving on the wall across from the sleeping area. This is our...

Congress Members Announce Hearing, Demand Chief Justice Investigate Clarence Thomas Trips Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

Join us Tuesday for the inside story on our bombshell Clarence Thomas report.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday announced plans to hold a hearing in the coming days regarding the need to restore confidence in the Supreme Courts ethical standards, citing ProPublicas reporting on over 20 years worth of luxury travel accepted by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas from a billionaire Republican megadonor.

The planned hearing is detailed in a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts and follows comments made by the committee chair, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, last week in which he called for an enforceable code of conduct for the justices.

If the Court does not resolve this issue on its own, the Committee will consider legislation to resolve it, the letter said.

Mondays letter echoed a call from 22 Democratic lawmakers last week for Roberts to launch an investigation into Thomas trips and his failure to report them. That group included members of both the House and Senate judiciary committees.

In their separate letter to Roberts, those lawmakers including Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Georgia Rep...

Want to Help Wildlife? Turn Off Your Lights. (Maria)

The author writes, Look for a constellation in the glow of a city, and at best you might see a star or two. Thats because light pollution is turning night into day in 80 percent of the world. The day to night cycle is an essential part of nature, telling animals when to emerge to hunt, forage, migrate, and mate. When artificial light disrupts those natural light cues, wildlife from bugs to birds, and even plants, are seriously impacted. Its a problem getting worse every year, but there are simple solutions to help wildlife and restore our night sky view, experts say.

Republicans Cant Simply Remove a WI Supreme Court Justice (Al)

From Wisconsin Watch: Rep. Dan Knodls 8th Senate District victory gives Republicans a two-thirds Senate majority, creating speculation about whether they could impeach Justice-elect Janet Protasiewicz.

How Tennessee GOPs Majority Used Power to Expel Democrats (Reader Steve)

The authors write, The expulsion of two Tennessee Democrats over a gun control protest is an extraordinary showcase of how the levers of single-party power in Americas statehouses can be pulled not only to shut down opponents, but to also punish them. On any given day in Tennessee, Republicans have the commanding majority to pass just about any law they want. The lopsided dynamic is common in many U.S. statehouses including where Democrats are in charge and it has widened under gerrymandered voting maps that redraw legislative district boundaries to dilute the opposition partys votes.

It Never Changes Freethought Blogs

I read this morning:

wisdom and virtue are by no means the sole objects of respect; nor vice and folly, of contempt.  We frequently see the respectful attentions of the world more strongly directed towards the rich and the great, than towards the wise and the virtuous.  We see frequently the vices and follies of the powerful much less despised than the poverty and weakness of the innocent.

Republicans choose abortion as the hill to die on Freethought Blogs

It has long been clear that Republicans were using the abortion issue as a vote getting strategy. That seemed to have worked for a while to rally especially the religious zealots to their cause. But what has happened, as often occurs when a party panders to a fanatical base, is that the zealots get out of hand and push the issue much further than the party leaders would have liked. We see that with gun control measures. People in general approve of common sense gun control measures but Republicans are in the grip of the extremists so that now they cannot do anything at all, however reasonable, that might anger the extremists even if they say they want the right to openly carry bazookas and hand grenades in the streets.

What the Republican establishment seemed to have wanted is to place restrictions on abortion to make it very difficult to get while not blocking it entirely, because that policy of making it access harder seemed to have some appeal. They attacked the Roe v. Wade ruling by portraying it as allowing abortion on demand (though it did not) and called for its overthrow. They got that result by packing the US Supreme Court with anti-abortion justices who hid their beliefs during their conformation proceedings, and exulted over victory of their stealth strategy.

But the zealots essentially want to outlaw any and all abortions at any time and without any exceptions, even for rape and the health of the mother. These moves to so severely restrict abortion access are not popular as can be seen in how it galvanized voters to largely reject Republican candidates in the 2022 mid-term elections.

Conservatives are finding out the hard way that abortion isnt a 50-50 issue anymore.

Going back to the 1990s, Gallup polling showed Americans divided roughly evenly between those who called themselves pro-life and pro-choice. Exit polls from the 1990s and 2000s showed voters who said abortion or moral values were most important to their vote supported Republican candidates in greater numbers.

But those surveys were conducted when a right to an abortion was law of the land. The Supreme Courts Dobbs decision last year ending that constitutional right has exposed Americans broad opposition to the strict abortion bans adopted or proposed in GOP-controlled states. And its revealed that public surveys on the matter probably need more nuanced questions now.

Now, a four-point question probably best measures where Americans sit on the issue: legal in all cases, legal in most, illegal in all and illegal in most. The 2022 national exit poll used this device, finding that 29 percent of voters believed abortion should be legal in all cases, while another 30 percent thought it should be le...

Texas takes another step into the abyss Freethought Blogs

Daniel Perry was an uber driver who ran a red light, drove into a crowd of Black Lives Matter protesters, and when one of them approached his car carrying an AK-47 (which, stupid and dangerous as it is, is legal in Texas), opened fire with a handgun and killed him. He was found guilty of murder in a jury trial.

In Texas. After he threatened to kill someone online.

Perrys defense team argued that he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors contended that Perry instigated what happened. They highlighted a series of social media posts and Facebook messages in which Perry made statements that they said indicated his state of mind, such as he might kill a few people on my way to work. They are rioting outside my apartment complex.

A friend responded, Can you legally do so? Perry replied, If they attack me or try to pull me out of my car then yes.

Guess what? The governor wants to free him immediately.

Abbott wants an army of undisciplined thugs who will murder people he doesnt like. Its the authoritarian mindset.

Its what happens in Uganda or El Salvador, said Cofer, a former prosecutor. Total abrogation of the rule of law. And whats even worse is that Abbott knows better. He was a smart Texas Supreme Court Justice. He knows this is legally wrong. Profoundly wrong. Pure politics.

But it works! I know I would never consider living in Texas. I wont even visit the state anymore. Abbott is doing a great job of driving anyone who would oppose him away.

My genetics class is going woke! Freethought Blogs

Ive been teaching the students all this basic transmission genetics all semester, and while its important and fundamental, it can have a bad effect on peoples brains. I cringe when I hear people talking about human traits using simple Mendelian terms like dominant and recessive because, while it works for many things, for others it misleads and is overly simplistic. I want my students to come away from the class knowing that genetics is complex and subtle and everything is polygenic and epistasis matters, and thats hard to do when theyre trying to figure out the basics of doing a fly cross.

Its also a problem because instilling only the basics of Mendel is a good way to make Nazis its easy to distort simple concepts they barely understand into props for your biases. Id like to forestall that. Also, Im in Minnesota, and Minnesota has a smug white people problem.

The racism you see in Minnesota is the type of racism where people say there is no racism. The only race is the human race, Myers [not me, no relation] said. How can we say the only race is the human race when all the people with dark skin are people with higher unemployment rates, dying from COVID, more likely to be arrested, more likely to be beaten by police and murdered? How does that happen when theres no race?

So Im going to wake up all the smart students in my class. My strategy involves handing them a digital folder full of articles from science journals as well as newspapers, telling them to pick one, and present it to the class (Im sure not going to just lecture on these things I want students to think about them.) Theyre getting the folder today, have to pick an article by Wednesday, and are going to prepare a ten minute summary and review for two weeks from today. Its going to be fun, right?

Mouse Freethought Blogs

I used to follow Jim Butchers Harry Dresden books, until I tired of them. Theyre puffalicious, but they remind me too much of S.M. Brusts condensed sci-fi con conversations, and they just started to sound self-similar.

But, one of the characters in those books that I enjoyed, naturally, was Dresdens dog Mouse. Mouse got the name because hes humongous, but once was small(ish) and gray(ish). Butcher teases us with a bit of lore regarding Mouse but never gets detailed: hes a Tibetan temple guard dog (a foo dog) and a supernatural power in his own right. [Mouse]

Just for the heck of it, I thought Id render Mouse in Midjourney.

Midjourney AI and mjr: a giant noble chinese temple dog, gray, realistic, alive.

The first thing I thought was that guy probably eats a 25# bag of kibble for breakfast. Then, I thought, I pity the poor fool who has to brush him. But maybe supernatural dogs dont get poopy butt, or armpit mats, I dont really know.

Midjourney AI and mjr: the chinese woman wearing hanfu is standing next to the huge dog

This one was harder to get: Midjourney has its own idea how big dogs are, and I had to feed back the other image of Mouse in order to get the proportions right. Finally I resorted to roughly compositing a human figure into the picture of the dog, so Midjourney would riff on it from there.

Finally, I tried this and I think it came out pretty well!

Midjourney AI and mjr: the chinese woman is brushing the huge dogs fur with a silver brush.

I know a yarn collector/spinner who once made a sweater that was 50% samoyed dog fur. Allegedly, their fur is hollow and is amazingly insulative because it holds air. OK, whatever, no m...

Who or What Is Moon of Alabama? And Why Is He Trying to Lynch Evan Gershkovich? WhoWhatWhy

Is Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter arrested by the Russians last week, actually a spy?

Some people even in the United States think so. Personally, I believe that to state as much is extremely reckless and endangers journalists everywhere. But beyond that, it is a symptom of a disease that is afflicting a small but seemingly growing element of the American Left.

They have a propensity to always ascribe sinister motives to the US establishment (including journalists) while extending a breathtaking degree of trust to anyone on the other side, including dictators and mass oppressors of all stripes.

Look, weve all witnessed the history of American wrongdoing, and we all get it: The US has done plenty of terrible stuff. And almost certainly is still doing some. But to insist that nothing ever changes that some permanent cabal will continue to decide everything all the time with the most malevolent of intents, with no one able to stop it bespeaks a kind of madness, caused by a rigor mortis of the mind.

The thing that strikes me about the cabal is that some see it as all-powerful, calling all the shots with precision, but somehow also feckless and incompetent. Its hard enough to govern a small town or run a mom-and-pop business, yet these folks think the cabal is capable of running everything in the world, all nicely coordinated, in furtherance of some nefarious vision

It is from this madness that spring the constant suspicions and, from those, a kind of certainty that something is always afoot. Hence, if the Russians say a Wall Street Journal reporter is a US spy, well, by gosh, that must be true!

I recently got a note from a friend I respect, who had read someone making the case that Moscow is right. The proponent of this was a smallish blog you may not have heard of, but that apparently has quite a dedicated following and is frequently cited by its followers as thoughtful, knowledgeable, and perhaps authoritative.

I want to take a look here at this blog, and the phenomenon of which it is a part. Although its a mere blip in the media landscape, I believe it offers insight into a growing sickness and darkness in this country one of a number of dysfunctional subsets of our society which range from the MAGA people to the anti-vaxxers.

None of these people trust aut...

Utahs Secretive Medical Malpractice Panels Make It Even Harder to Sue Providers Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This story discusses sexual assault.

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with The Salt Lake Tribune. Sign up for Dispatches_ to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Jessica Lancaster didnt want to tell the panel of three strangers in front of her about the moment her chiropractor insisted she lift up her shirt.

How Kelby Martins breathing became heavier as he groped her breasts, which had been healing from surgery; how after he touched her chest, he didnt follow through with any type of chiropractic treatment; how she left his office in August 2021 in a haze.

But Lancaster wanted to sue Martin to hold him accountable, and before she could do that, Utah law required her to make her case to the panel.

The panel concluded last August that Martin had departed from the normal standard of care, Lancasters lawyers later disclosed in a court filing. In response to a request for comment, Martins lawyer pointed to court papers in which the chiropractor denied Lancasters allegations against him. The case is pending; his license remains in good standing with the state.

There was a time when a majority of states had adopted malpractice screening panels in some form. A 1984 analysis by the American Medical Association found 30 states had implemented panels at some point. The goal was to cut down on frivolous lawsuits and encourage settlements of legitimate claims.

Over the years, many of those states found these panels ineffective or in violation of their constitutions, and some did away with them entirely. But Utah remains one of 16 states where patients still must spend time, money for legal services and emotional energy recounting to a panel how a medical professional they trusted hurt them, according to a tally from the Nation...

Long COVID: For 40 Million Americans, the Pandemic Isnt Winding Down WhoWhatWhy

On March 29 the Senate passed with bipartisan support a bill to end the emergency status of the COVID-19 pandemic, joining the House, which passed similar legislation at the end of January. President Joe Biden says he strongly opposes the bill but his administration nonetheless plans to let the emergency status expire on May 11

Not surprisingly, given the politicization and political weaponization that has characterized the COVID-19 crisis from its beginning, much of this activity in Washington comes down to symbolism and posturing. And indeed, as Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) put it: Theres a right way to wind down. This is about messaging.

Posturing and messaging aside, the timing of this move to wind down the emergency is greatly at odds with the reality of the ongoing global pandemic.

There have been, to be sure, a reduced number of reported COVID-19 deaths. So far this year has averaged fewer than 4,000 deaths per week, compared to an average of over 5,000 deaths per week for 2022. In 2020 and 2021 respectively, more than 350,000 and 475,000 Americans died from Covid (this was enough to place Covid as the third leading cause of death, with heart disease and cancer each claiming over 600,000 Americans per year). Thats approximately 6,700 per week in 2020 and 9,000 per week in 2021.

So weekly death totals have dropped significantly from the worst of the pande...

Award-Winning Complete Street Just Another Deadly Stroad Strong Towns Media

The intentions behind the concept of Complete Streets are clear and straightforward. A street should be a safe place for everyone who uses it. Its not enough to design a street for automobiles and make everything else an afterthought; we have to accommodate the mobility of everyone in a way that respects their humanity. An urban street shouldn't be deemed complete until it does.

I absolutely support these concepts, but I dont support Complete Streets.

In my career, I have watched the concept of Complete Streets go from being a fringe, revolutionary idea to being fully co-opted by the old-school transportation professions. It now largely resembles the worst of their mindless excesses instead of the radical ideals Complete Streets advocates originally set out to promote.

To gain widespread acceptance, the Complete Streets strategy was to graft itself on to existing systems and bureaucracies, lubricating bottom-up change with meaningful amounts of top-down funding. State departments of transportation and local transportation offices took the money, and they have continued to check the boxes necessary to keep getting the money, but the results consistently fall short of the original concept.

In a recent Crash Analysis Studio, we examined a fatal crash on Ager Road, a Complete Street in Hyattsville, Maryland. A woman named Hellen Jorgenson was attempting to cross the street on foot when she was struck by an automobile being driven along Ager Road. We published a report detailing the many design factors that contributed to the crash. As we examined this location, I reacted with shock to the conscious indifference the design demonstrates to the safety of anyone outside of an automobile. It was only later that I was informed that multiple industry organizations have recognized Ager Road with some of their highest awards.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has named Ager Road one of their 2023 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award recipients. ASCE called Ager Road a Green-Complete Streets Project and claims the project improved the safety, functionality, and aesthetics of the street. According to the ASCE, Ager Road underwent a road diet to reduce speeding and improve pedestrian facilities.

The Ager Road project also won an award from the County Engineers Association of Marylan...

The Army Increasingly Allows Soldiers Charged With Violent Crimes to Leave the Military Rather Than Face Trial Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

This article is co-published with The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local newsroom that informs and engages with Texans, and with Military Times, an independent news organization reporting on issues important to the U.S. military. Sign up for newsletters from The Texas Tribune and Military Times.

Stationed at Army posts thousands of miles apart, two soldiers faced a flurry of criminal charges after they allegedly assaulted women within days of each other in early 2017.

One soldier was accused of physically assaulting his wife and firing a gun as she tried to flee their home near Fort Hood in Texas. Police later found a bullet hole in a window screen.

The other told investigators in Alaska that hed had sex with a fellow soldier who he knew was drunk and incapable of providing consent. They later found DNA evidence of his semen on her shorts.

Military prosecutors deemed the cases strong enough to pursue them in court. But the Army instead kicked the soldiers out, allowing them to return to civilian life with scant public record of the accusations against them.

The two cases are among hundreds that lay bare a long-standing but little-known practice that permits service members facing criminal charges to circumvent trial by being discharged from the military. The service members often receive negative marks on their personnel records but avoid the possibility of a federal conviction.

A federal watchdog agency in 1978 called for abolishing the practice, known as administrative separati...

By Mike Sygula / Truth Theory

Blind belief in authority is never good. History is filled with examples of how people in power conspired and lied to maintain their position. It is often fascinating to watch how many people put trust in their governments or governmental agencies and naively believe whatever comes out of them. As a reminder to always question things, today we will review some documented cases from the history of how the US government and its agencies committed crimes against their own population.

Finnish Company Is Busy Turning Worrisome Sea Algae into Replacement Plastic For Common Products True Activist

Kemia Media

Sometimes, trash and plastic arent the only issues when it comes to unwanted things floating in the ocean. For Finnish scuba diver, Mari Granstrm, she saw exactly how there was so much unmanageable algae blooms in the water that can actually be very harmful to marine life. As a result, he decided to begin a refining company that actually harvests the algae and turns it into a variety of products.

Because particular algae have very similar components to that of petroleum-based chemicals, the similarity allows the replication for how particular products that already exist are manufactured. Some of these products include artificial textiles, cosmetics, fertilizer, detergents, packaging materials and many different kinds of foodstuff.

For Granstrm, she always used to go diving in the Baltic Sea, which is native to her home. However, it became a problem when the nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients that came from fertilizers used in the farming industries began to flow from the farming fields into the rivers, then from the rivers into the sea. This began a regular movement of eutrophication, also known as the massive blooms of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae.

WLW Rep and the Triple Six Mafia Freethought Blogs

I dont read current science fiction & fantasy / SFF books, didnt read much of em back in my day either.  But I am around some amateur authors inspired by and working in that genre, and sometimes for yuks I watch video essays about stuff Im not actually interested in.  So I found out about these books by Piper CJ pitched with bi representation, that aside from their other issues   are just utterly failing to make the lady love happen.  Those links go to long video essays so skip em if you dont have the time.  The point is that very heterod-out scenarios get the word count and lady love is some abstract distant thing that is there in theme but almost never on the page.

And with the young authors I know that try to make women-loving-women / WLW content in their own stories, be it bi or les, they often seem reticent or shy or perhaps just asexual about it.  Thats valid, but bi women and lesbians should get to have stories where the ladies are allowed to kiss more than once per five hundred pages, if thats something theyre into.

Most of this music video by Triple Six Mafia is just bros posing in the cloughb, but there are a few bits with ladies touching each other affectionately.  Unlike much lesbian porn made for men, they dont look at the camera in the middle of their scenes, to tell you this is for the benefit of men.  Theyre just, hey, lets look at each other with longing, lets caress, and lets do this weird drug out of baby bottles.  In so doing, this video has more affection between ladies than some entire books sold on the back of that premise.

This got me thinking about the gender-reversed scenario.  What if fujoshis (weird geek girls horny on the concept of gay dudes) went mainstream and made rap like this.  Youd see stocky women in polo shirts and khakis acting tough while gentle-eyed mans get all touchy-feely in slow motion.  I wonder if anybody has made that music video yet.

EDIT TO ADD:  Reminder, still doing my fundraiser up through April 21st (stopping early if I reach stretch goal ahead of then).  Make at least a three dollar donation and Ill rhyme a word of your choice in a rap.  While I appreciate the contributions of people who have...

Akron Grand Jury Set for Next Week to Hear Case of Police Killing Jayland Walker UNICORN RIOT

Akron, Ohio Almost a year after 90 shots were fired in the vicious shooting by Akron Police that killed unarmed 25 year old Jayland Walker, a grand jury is set to to be seated on April 10 to hear the evidence in the case. After Walker took off running following a police pursuit on June 27, 2022, eight officers fired around 90 bullets at Walker a volley of shots consistently fired for eight seconds.

Last week, in preparation of protests from the grand jury results, windows in downtown Akron were getting boarded up, cement blocks were placed on streets and fencing was erected around the Summit County Courthouse.

Protests erupted in Akron last year after the killing along with solidarity protests across the country. On July 3, body camera footage of the shooting was released by Akron Police in which they claim Walker fired a gun from his car after not pulling over for an attempted traffic stop. Walker got out of the passenger side of the vehicle as it was slowly moving at an intersection and ran through some grass as eight officers ran behind him. After briefly turning around while running, Walker was shot in a parking lot with at least 41 bullets.

A gun with a magazine with ammo was found separately along with a wedding ring on the driver seat. Walkers fianc Jaymeisha Beasley, died in a car accident a month before the incident.

On July 14, a vigil was held for Jayland Walker at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis where a large Black power fist sculpture, created by Jordan Powell-Karis, was blessed by the community before being sent to Akron where it remains at Walkers family church in St. Ashworth Temple in Akron.

Here we go again: cis man aggressively protecting children hascan you guess? Freethought Blogs

Man, these stories keep popping up, and theyre not even interesting for the irony anymore. Yeah, another crusader protecting children was found to have a stash of child porn.

Michael Dolce, a 53-year-old lawyer known for representing child sexual abuse survivors, was recently arrested by FBI agents at his West Palm Beach, Florida home. Dolce, who founded a group called Protect Our Kids First Inc., was allegedly laying in his bed and downloading sexually explicit images of children when agents broke down his front door.

According to an FBI affidavit, after Dolces March 15 arrest, agents found 1,997 images and five videos of child pornography on his computer. The images were of male and female children ages five to 12, including several of a prepubescent girl in a subfolder titled Sweet Pedo Stars. Dolce could receive a minimum of 20 years in prison if found guilty of possessing child pornography.

The police are brutal, but sometimes they have good timing.

ExceptOK, this Michael Dolce is a sick scumbag, he deserves to lose his job (he already has), and should be mocked and howled at for his hypocrisy, and should never be taken seriously ever again. There ought to be some penalties for his behavior, but twenty years in prison? In our prison system? Is that just? Especially when the article points out what hes going to face.

If Dolce is found guilty of possessing child pornography, hell likely face a living hell behind bars, CBS News reported. Inmates with sexual interests in children often occupy the lowest rung of the prisoner hierarchy, with other inmates sometimes defecating in their cells, using them as sex slaves, or targeting them for violence and murder as a way to gain prestige. Even when such offenders are placed into protective custody, they remain widely despised by other inmates, the news outlet reported.

Child pornography is a deplorable crime that rightly deserves to be punished, but you know what else is a deplorable crime? A state-run rape factory that allows inmates to torture each other. I also have to wonder how the police had such good timing there are serious issues of privacy here (uh-oh, is the FBI going to break down my door and uncover my vast stash of spider images?).

Its unclear why the FBI was monitoring Dulce and whether he had any anti-LGBTQ+ views. However, he is one of the countless cisgender men who have been arrested for child pornography wh...

I like religious pluralism for keeping Catholic fanaticism in check Freethought Blogs

Heres a fine Easter message for you: The world would be better if every man, woman, and child were Catholic. You are misusing freedom of religion when you use it to promote pluralism and false religions.

Oh yeah, the Church Militant never fails to provide entertaining intolerance for public consumption. Its a strange mixed message, though. This guy is yelling about how pluralism is a good thing, and you shouldnt be angry about it because everyone should be free to make the right choice (Catholicism) and the wrong choice (every other religion), but you should be getting mad that every single minor Catholic festival isnt promoted as heavily as Christmas and Ramadan and Diwali. But have you ever looked at calendar of Catholic holy days? This week alone we had Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Maundy Thursday, and Black Saturday. Get to work and complain to your HR department that they arent sending out announcements and memos about every single Catholic holiday! If my university started spamming me about every single religious holiday Catholics arent alone in packing the calendar with noise Id have to block their email.

And darn those rainbow flags. Offensive to the Church Militant! There are no gay people in the True Catholic church.

Anyway, Im doing nothing for Easter at all other than grading and making a vegetarian lasagna for dinner. I hear that my granddaughter is going on a family Easter egg hunt, and thats about as religious as were going to get. I guess I better get started on the holy rite of marking my students sins with a red pen.

Democracy Wins and Loses in Wisconsin WhoWhatWhy

Democrats rejoiced this week after the liberal candidate, Janet Protasiewicz, flipped Wisconsins Supreme Court in what turned out to be the most expensive judicial race in history. The candidates, parties, and outside groups poured more than $30 million into this contest, which was dominated by the issue of abortion. Protasiewiczs win was also hailed as a victory for democracy.

Really?

Sure, ostensibly, this is true. If it were a country, Wisconsin would probably rank somewhere close to Pakistan and Afghanistan on the democracy index (the US as a whole comes in at number 36 and is labeled a deficient democracy, both of which seem charitable assessments). Its districts are so unfairly drawn that Republicans are now holding a legislative supermajority in a state Donald Trump lost in 2020 and that elected a Democratic governor as well as a Democratic secretary of state.

Therefore, it is true that a liberal majority on the states highest court will be a good thing for democracy especially if that majority ends the extreme gerrymander that has ensured that Democrats have no chance of retaking the state Legislature in an election.

But look at these paragraphs again, and its easy to see why this race is also a sign of how much democracy is ailing in the US.

Liberal candidate, flipped, most expensive judicial race in history, outside groups, $30 million, dominated by the issue of abortion. None of these words should appear in a story about a Supreme Court.

First of all, judges shouldnt be elected; they should be chosen. And that choice should be made based on ability and not ideology. In addition, the higher the court, the more rigorous the confirmation process should be.

At no point in this process should there be ads or spending from outside groups. Finally, justices should not be chosen, nominated, or confirmed based on particular beliefs they ho...

Hope 2 Freethought Blogs

Ive gotten familiar with the gestation time for a variety of seeds, and can practically set my clock by genovese basil.

Unless something bad happens, Ill have pretty good-sized plants in a couple weeks. Then I can start stealing a leaf now and again to crush into my pasta.

And, the lemongrass. Like the basil, I just scatter seeds all around the pot, so there are a bunch of different plants I can mutilate.

Those roundish things in the center bottom are interesting. Some kind of mushroom that looks like P. Cubensis but isnt (shrooms like to grow a large mycelium web before they poke their heads up, and this pot was empty and dead a week and a half ago, no way shrooms would colonize it that fast)

That tiny little green thing is a folded over baby green onion.

Grow! Grow my little ones! Be proud and strong, so I can eat you.

We had some pretty crazy wind last week, and it completely ripped off the ridgeline vent and the automatic vent control. I have to go searching in the cows field for it and hope they havent stomped on it. Well, I can always build another.

The automatic vent systems are really cool and I do not understand them very well at all. Its a piston full of some kind of grease that expands and contracts with heat, thereby operating a lever system that opens the vent. Pretty cool but not able to survive 60mph winds. I may just leave it open when summer is here the inside of the greenhouse gets very hot 110F plus, which cant be great for the plants.

Clarence Thomas Vacations Like the Elite at Bohemian Grove WhoWhatWhy

Reporting by ProPublica this week showed that extravagant gifts and travel opportunities were lavished on Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni by Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow. These gifts were potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. When questioned, Thomas said he was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from a close personal friend, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable. He also stated, I have endeavored to follow that counsel throughout my tenure, and have always sought to comply with the disclosure guidelines. The Los Angeles Times reported twenty years ago about gifts Justice Thomas received; after that he stopped disclosing them.

Video: Rebecca Watson takes on Easter myths and misinformation Freethought Blogs

Most of my memories from Easter are pretty secular. Its not because we werent a religious household, but more because Quakers dont much much stock in holy days, and my family mostly saw it as an excuse to celebrate and see relatives. We did egg hunts, we got huge baskets of candy from my grandmother all the usual stuff. I think thats part of why the claims of a pagan origin for the holiday never really interested me all that much. I believed them, but it didnt really change how I saw things. This also means that discovering that all the Ishtar/Ostara stuff seems to be bunk also doesnt really ruffle my feathers. It certainly seemed plausible, but its just as plausible that another chain of events led to the odd mishmash that is the modern USian conception of Easter. In fact, its apparently more plausible:

Ill admit that I fully bought into the Ostara story and I was honestly shocked to learn that this story has only one single source, and its NOT from anyone who worshiped her, and maybe not even someone who lived in a time when anyone worshiped her. We know of Ostara only because of an 8th century English Christian monk named Bede, who wrote that the local pagans used to hold festivals in Ostaras honor each Spring, but that with the Christianization of the area, the practice died out before his time. Thats it! A THOUSAND YEARS LATER, Jacob Grimm (of the famous Brothers) took that description and ran with it, asserting with no evidence that Ostaras festivals directly connect with Easter and are the reason why we do so much weird shit to celebrate Jesus dying, like how we all love to eat pastry of heathenish form. Thats a direct quote from Grimms Deutsche Mythologie, and FYI it is now a permanent part of my familys Easter traditions.

This binding on of the Easter seax, or sword-knife, leads us to infer that a sword of peculiar antique shape was retained; as the Easter scones, sterstuopha (RA. 298) and moonshaped stermne (Brem. wtb.) indicate pastry of heathenish form.

Note that in the late 19th century, 150 inscriptions were found in Germany that related to three goddesses that seem to have been known as the Matronae Austriahenae ,...

It was a crime, not an accident! Deadly Greek Train Crash Sparks Justice Movement UNICORN RIOT

The InterCity 62-passenger train departed from the Athens central station for the Athens Thessaloniki route at 19:22 on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. At 23:09 it departed from Larissa station carrying 340 passengers and 12 staff, a total of 352 people. At 23:21 the IC62 collided with freight train No 63503, which was being driven by two people. After the latest DNA identifications of the reported missing persons, the death toll stands at 57 with at least 80 injured. The majority of the dead are young adults within the ages of 20-30 years. One person remains in critical condition, still battling for their life and two others recently left Intensive Care Units.

It is meanwhile unlikely that missing persons have still not been reported. Despite this, organizations working with migrants are hoping to find information on whether any migrants were on board. Migrants regularly buy their ticket in the train, and therefore are not included in the official passenger list from online reservations.

This article is a commentary piece reflecting lived experience, research and local perspectives written by a Greek resident. The views and opinions expressed dont necessarily represent those of Unicorn Riot.

According to the information available, the Larissa station master did not put the train back on the correct line/direction. Thus, for about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) and almost 12 minutes the passenger train was moving on the same line as a freight train.

Immediately after the accident it was revealed that on the Athens-Thessaloniki route, light signals, remote management, traffic control systems and communication systems were out of service, except on a small part of the line. Instead, the train engineers communicate by radio with the stationmaster in order to move from one station to another.

Even if one of these systems was working, the engineers would have a picture of the traffic within a radius of a few hundred miles, and before they collided they would have simply stopped at a red signal light or the automatic instant braking system would have been activated.

A day after the accident, marches and protests started in Thessaloniki and Athens and quickly spread throughout the country. The furious protests were directed at the Greek state and the private company Hellenic Train, which manages the transport service.

Signs left at a kiosk at a Thessaloniki train station on March 7 contained a variety of impactful statements (see images below):

  • Big sign with red hand, You killed three of my cousins and you give me three days to mourn? (referring on the three days of national grief called by the premier minister)
  • It was not a mistake, it was a crime...

Bipartisan Group of Senators Urges Feds to Do More for East Palestine WhoWhatWhy

Two months after a train derailment in East Palestine, OH, released dangerous chemicals and sent residents fleeing, a bipartisan group of senators is urging the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to immediately investigate the health effects of the accident.

We repeatedly hear concerns about the potential impact of both acute and chronic exposure to the hazardous chemicals released in the train derailment, write Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), J.D. Vance (R-OH), John Fetterman (D-PA), and Bob Casey (D-PA). We request that the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) assist the impacted communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania by helping conduct the needed health research investigations.

On February 3, a 50-car train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed near East Palestine. The train carried hazardous materials, including the carcinogen vinyl chloride, and caused a large fire and plume of heavy smoke. Officials issued an evacuation order the next day.

Residents who evacuated have since returned, but they remain wary.

Our government told us it was safe to come home. Within minutes, a train went through town on top of highly contaminated soil that was left behind, Misti Allison, an East Palestine resident, told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee last month. But we dont know if its really safe. Since returning home, people and animals are sick. The EPA is telling us the data is fine while independent researchers are telling us that there are high levels of acrolein and other cancerous chemicals around us. Who do we trust with these conflicting reports?

The senators urge the NIH to consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) to find the best course of immediate action.

The lawmakers make it clear that they intend to keep a close eye on the situation and the federal governments response.

We request additional information on immediate and short-term actions NIEHS is able to take to mobilize existing assets including efforts to augment and supplement any existing grantees who are equipped to aid in an immediate rese...

One Grateful Atheist Freethought Blogs

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in my early twenties and my main focus at the time was recovery. After a few years, my symptoms were managed and I decided I wanted to help others, so I got a part-time job at a group home. I have now been working in the mental health field for sixteen years. I have had jobs at three different organizations and Im passionate about my work.

I am a certified peer supporter and last year I also became certified in trauma support. The training in trauma support was intense and took several months. There were many hours of training videos and sixteen weeks of trainings via Zoom.

To my surprise, becoming certified in trauma support was less about taking care of others and more about taking care of myself. The main takeaway was that you cant care for others if you are not well.

During my training, I learned about meditation, relaxation, grounding, and gratitude. Sometimes we started our Zoom meetings by writing down five to ten things were grateful for. We were told that happier people tend to show more gratitude. At first, it was difficult to come up with that many things. I would write down my family and job but it was hard to think of more. As time went on, it got a little easier.

I recently was feeling down and I remembered our exercises in gratitude. Does it truly make you happier? So two weeks ago I started a gratitude journal and Ive been writing down at least ten things every day. I include the big things like my family, my job, art, and writing but also little things like good-smelling hair products, peacock blue paint, and my house plants. Those last few things may seem insignificant, but they really do bring me joy.

I have to admit, it has boosted my mood. The last two weeks have given me a more positive outlook. I think Im going to keep going with the journal and see if I notice anything else.

One thing I didnt expect is that in a way my journal helps me celebrate my atheism. Every time I make a list of things Im grateful for I realize I can truly appreciate my life and the world around me without having to credit a deity, and it feels amazing.

My gratitude journal is really cute. Its fuzzy and has a panda on it. I bought it at the book fair at my daughters school. Can I be grateful for my gratitude journal?

Gratitude exercises may seem a little cheesy, but I think it actually helps. I just wanted to share in case anyone needs a little boost and wants to give it a shot.

I would love to read what you guys are grateful for....
