Controversy over claims of room temperature superconductors Freethought Blogs

Superconductivity is the phenomenon where the resistance to current flow in a material drops to zero. This means that there will be no loss of energy due to heat generation when current flows through the superconductor. Since resistive heat losses are one of the main limitations associated with any current-generated devices, superconductors open up enormous possibilities for technology that could revolutionize our lives. Unfortunately this phenomenon, first discovered by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911, only seemed to work at extremely low temperatures close to absolute zero that required cooling with liquid helium, making it impractical for everyday use.

Creating materials that would be superconducting at room temperatures became the Holy Grail of this area of research and a big breakthrough came in 1986 when materials were found that were superconducting at around 90K (-183C) which could be reached using liquid nitrogen. Even higher temperature superconducting materials at about 203K (-77C) have been found but that required enormous pressures, of about 106 times atmospheric pressure.

Recent papers by a research team headed by Ranga Dias and Ahskan Salamat at the University of Rochester have claimed that they have found materials that are superconducting at temperature of 294K (17C) and at a pressure of 10 kbar or ten times atmospheric pressure. This is big news.

This article explains what was found.

The only superconducting materials previously discovered require extreme conditions to function, which makes them impractical for many real-world applications. The first known superconductors had to be cooled with liquid helium to temperatures only a few degrees above absolute zero. In the 1980s researchers found superconductivity in a category of materials called cuprates, which work at higher temperatures yet still require cooling with liquid nitrogen. Since 2015 scientists have measured room-temperature superconductive behavior in hydrogen-rich materials called hydrides. but they have to be pressed in a sophisticated viselike instrument called a diamond anvil cell until they reach a pressure of about a quarter to half of that found near the center of Earth.

The new material, called nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride, is a blend of hydrogen, the rare-earth metal lutetium and nitrogen. Although this material also relies on a diamond anvil cell, the study found that it begins exhibiting superconductive behavior at a pressure of about 10,000 atmospheresroughly 100 times lower than the pressures that other hydrides require. The new material is much closer to ambient pressure than previous materials, says David Ceperley, a condensed matter physicist at University of Ill...

Why would Tim White and UC Berkeley hoard old bones? Freethought Blogs

I organize spiders better than this

Berkeley has a bit of an unsavory reputation as the premiere grave-robbing institution in the US. Theyve got an impressive collection of looted remains.

More than three decades ago, Congress ordered museums, universities and government agencies that receive federal funding to publicly report any human remains in their collections that they believed to be Native American and then return them to tribal nations.

UC Berkeley has been slow to do so. The university estimates that it still holds the remains of 9,000 Indigenous people in the campus Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology more than any other U.S. institution bound by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA, according to a ProPublica analysis of federal data.

Tim White, the esteemed anthropologist, was in charge of repatriation decisions for many years, and basically stonewalled the process.

White said the collection did not need to be reported under NAGPRA because there is no way to determine the origin of the bones and therefore the law does not apply.

The collection has exposed deep rifts at UC Berkeley, pitting a prominent professor who said hes done nothing wrong against university administrators who have apologized to tribes for not sharing information about the remains sooner.

Im looking at this as someone who is sympathetic to both educational and research needs, and I have to ask: why do you want these old bones anyway, Berkeley? Theyre used to teach anthropology students, and I can understand why you want variations represented one old mounted skeleton is not enough but why do you need thousands of specimens for teaching the basics, and why do you need Native American skeletons shoveled out of their graves by the thousands? This makes no sense. Its more like maintaining a dragons hoard then an actual, useful teaching collection. Thats especially clear when the collection is described.

By then, the teaching collection that anthropology professors used had grown to thousands of bones and teeth that White said in his report to university administrators had been commingled with others donated by amateur gravediggers, dentists, anatomists, physicians, law enforcement and biological supply companies.

The remains were unceremoniously sorted by body part...

Todays weather forecast Freethought Blogs

Enjoy this.

Susan Hassol and Michael Mann say, Enjoy the weather. Worry about the climate.. No. I refuse to enjoy this weather. Warm in Minnesota means hovering around freezing, and weve got deep piles of snow everywhere, and another storm on the way thatll dump more snow on us. Im not looking forward to what other parts of the country call Spring, because for us itll be the time everything melts producing seas of mud and slush, with sheets of ice lurking underneath. Theres nothing enjoyable about this season.

Its going to get worse before it gets better is my feeling.

This week sees a meteorological battleground setting up across the continental U.S., pitting a massive winter storm from the West against far-too-early Spring heat in the East. This major winter storm is dumping heavy snow and ice across the northern U.S. from the West Coast to the Northeast. Widespread very strong, gusty winds are expected across the West and High Plains while heavy rain with the potential for flash floods and severe weather are predicted for the Midwest and Plains. Meanwhile, historic heat is building across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic states, with record-breaking February temperatures soaring into the 80s. Almost the entire country is experiencing some form of extreme weather this week.

Its miserable here in the upper Midwest, so dont try to tell me to enjoy the weather, which has been nothing but bad news all winter long. Maybe theres good news about the climate?

The good news is that clean energy and other climate solutions are abundant and available. Although there is much work that remains to be done, recent U.S. legislation makes it increasingly profitable to tap into natural flows of renewable energy, such as from the sun and the wind, and to use that clean electricity to power our buildings, transportation and more. We do not have to simply accept an ever-worsening torrent of tempestuous weather. We can act with urgency to rein in the climate emergency and remake our civilization into one that respects the gift of a stable climate we inherited one that we can pass on to our children.

What, thats the good news? We can hope that the US government acts with urgency to switch to clean renewable energy sources? Right. Or we can pray that a host of fairies shows up with magic w...

Feudal Florida: DeSantiss Demesne WhoWhatWhy

It is hardly a secret that, since his election in 2018, the Republican governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has been consolidating power. It is also known that the constitutionality of this consolidation, along with that of many of the sweeping policies implemented under his administration, is in question. What may be less apparent to the general public, and even to political junkies, is the extent of this power grab, how completely Florida is now DeSantiss Demesne.

An anonymous Florida legislator put it succinctly: Ron DeSantis is essentially the speaker of the House, the president of the Senate, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court right now. Tom Lee, the former Florida Senate president, described him more colorfully as the proverbial 1100-pound gorilla. For those not familiar, the joke is: Where does an 1100-pound gorilla sit? the answer being: Wherever the hell he wants.

This is of broad national concern because DeSantis is considered by many to be the main rival to Donald Trump in 2024, his prospects boosted by the many conservative donors uneasy with Trumps instability and further enhanced by a widely shared wish, among those who believe the GOP has become a Trump cult, to see a return to sanity. But DeSantiss accretion of power in Florida shows he may be a quieter but more effective authoritarian threat to democracy than Trump.

Ominously, it is not just the state government that bends the knee to Floridas headman. During the 2022 election, DeSantis (along with the governor of Missouri, Mike Parson) did not allow federal election monitors inside polling places in Florida. The federal government chose not to fight him on this, instead meekly agreeing not to go inside the polling places and to observe only from outside. This is especially concerning in light of the fact that a 2022 election that was ...

In Kharkhiv, Hope and Fear Live Together WhoWhatWhy

KHARKIV, Ukraine Light had finally started to return to the streets of Kharkiv just before the rockets fell.

After more than a year of nightly blackouts, street lights in parts of Ukraines second largest city had begun to turn back on this month, bringing hope that life in the city was starting to return to normal. But on Thursday, a massive Russian attack on Ukrainian critical infrastructure temporarily plunged the city back into darkness.

Valentyna Yakimova had been asleep in her bed when the attack began.

Located roughly 25 miles from the Russian border, Kharkiv is regularly struck by rocket fire. Even so, living on the outskirts of the city, Valentyna had not believed her own home was vulnerable.

But at around 4:15 a.m. on Thursday morning, a Russian projectile crashed into a field about a hundred yards from Valentynas home, leaving a crater several yards wide.

With a thunderous roar, Valentynas windows shattered and the interior of her home ripped apart, she said later that day. In the darkness and confusion, she called out to her sister, Liuba.

In the adjacent bedroom she found Liuba covered in glass, her face bleeding from cuts, Valentyna said. She attempted to carry Liuba, who has been disabled since childhood, but glass and debris covered the floor, making it difficult to walk. The debris also obstructed the front door, preventing it from opening.

Unable to get out, Valentyna contacted her son Serhiy Tkachenko, who lives nearby. Serhiy called emergency services, and first responders soon arrived. They broke through the front door and loaded Liuba into an ambulance to take her to the hospital. Valentyna stayed behind.

I couldnt leave everything here, this house like that, Valentyna said.

While Thursdays attack was just the latest in a series of strikes on Ukraines power grid that have regularly left millions of Ukrainians without electricity, the strike came as something of a blow to Kharkivs residents. Just the night before, they had been celebrating when lights along a street near Valentynas home had turned back on.

Heads Up! Cities Need Your Attention. Strong Towns Media

(Source: Unsplash/Kelli McClintock.)

I sometimes joke that Im becoming a mid-life grouch, always complaining about kids these days. Its a side of me thats been coming out lately due to my frequent trips to Baylor Universitys campus, where my husband is a professor. I cant help but groan every time we pull up, in part because of the ever-prevalent fashion trend of lampshading that just wont die, but (and perhaps more frustratingly) because of the apparent inability of kids these days to walk around campus without staring at their phones. By the time we arrive around noon, were surrounded by dozens of students shuffling across campus, their heads buried in the screen in their hands.

It reminds me of my last year living in New York City. I remember surges of shock overtaking me upon boarding the subway at rush hour. Everyone aboard was staring at a screen. I dont know if theres a term for the feeling of being surrounded by people who refuse to make eye contact with you, who are not really aware of you and who are not really in the space they inhabit alongside you, but the feeling of alienation and social unawareness was so intense that I literally felt minor symptoms of a panic attack.

Ive been a little discouraged to see that this phone addiction epidemic is sprouting up in cities of all sizes, including smaller ones like Waco. Ive been surprised at the extent to which it is beginning to saturate interactions that were once considered no tech zones. Young adults in customer service roles now regularly greet customers with Apple earphones in their ears. Ive even seen a young man texting while bagging my groceries at H-E-B. At a taco shop two weeks ago, two guys ordered food, grabbed a table and proceeded not to chat with each oth...

Impact Matters Most at ProPublica. Heres How Our Recent Journalism Has Led to Change. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

In investigative journalism, impact is the coin of the realm. But impact is unpredictable. At ProPublica, our hope is that by exposing problems or things not working as they should legislators and policymakers will make changes.

Sometimes, the impact is immediate. In 2009, my colleagues and I reported that the California Board of Registered Nursing took years to discipline problematic nurses, putting patients in harms way. Within two days of our story, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced the majority of board members; a day later, the executive director of the board resigned. Our boss had to call ProPublicas founder to tell him not to expect this to happen every time ProPublica published a big investigation.

Other times, impact is delayed. In 2011, ProPublica and Columbia Universitys Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism reported how a program run by the U.S. Department of Education had failed, leaving many borrowers who became disabled in deep financial debt even though they should have qualified to have their federal student loans dismissed. It took until 2021 for the Education Department to say it would forgive $5.8 billion in loans.

Its hard to know in advance what stories will prompt change or how fast it will happen. Some stories land at the right moment, capturing the attention of politicians running for reelection, those who have a personal connection to an issue or bureaucrats who have been quietly fighting for change from within. Our Local Reporting Network project wit...

Doctors Warned Her Pregnancy Could Kill Her. Then Tennessee Outlawed Abortion. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

This story graphically describes serious complications in pregnancies and births, and it mentions suicide.

One day late last summer, Dr. Barry Grimm called a fellow obstetrician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center to consult about a patient who was 10 weeks pregnant. Her embryo had become implanted in scar tissue from a recent cesarean section, and she was in serious danger. At any moment, the pregnancy could rupture, blowing open her uterus.

Dr. Mack Goldberg, who was trained in abortion care for life-threatening pregnancy complications, pulled up the patients charts. He did not like the look of them. The muscle separating her pregnancy from her bladder was as thin as tissue paper; her placenta threatened to eventually invade her organs like a tumor. Even with the best medical care in the world, some patients bleed out in less than 10 minutes on the operating table. Goldberg had seen it happen.

Mayron Michelle Hollis stood to lose her bladder, her uterus and her life. She was desperate to end the pregnancy. On the phone, the two doctors agreed this was the best path forward, guided by recommendations from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, an association of 5,500 experts on high-risk pregnancy. The longer they waited, the more complicated the procedure would be.

But it was Aug. 24, and performing an abortion was hours away from becoming a felony in Tennessee. There were no explicit exceptions. Prosecutors could choose to charge any doctor who terminated any pregnancy with a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison. If charged, the doctor would have the burden of proving in front of a judge or jury that the procedure was necessary to save the patients life, similar to claiming self-defense in a homicide case.

The First Every Honeybee Vaccine Approved By The United States True Activist

PETA

There is a dwindling number of honeybees that researchers have noticed. These insects are an integral part of nature, and for the honey they produce, people have benefited from it as well.

So important are these bees that a biotech company announced this week that the USDA (Department of Agriculture) granted them a conditional license. This was for their honeybee vaccine.

At this point in time, even the animals need all the help they can get. This said vaccine aims to boost the bees immune system so that they are able to fight against American Foulbrood disease. This disease is a bacteria-based condition that is known to attack colonies. The culprit behind this is what they call the Paenibacillus larvae.

Honeybees are vital to our food supplies. However, because these honeybees are plagued by American Foulbrood, they have been dwindling and dying faster than expected. In fact, the numbers in which they die has been worrying. There had been no safe or sustainable antidote in the past. That is, until now. Previously, the only treatment method that they had for this extremely contagious disease was incinerating the bees and the infected hives with the a specific type of equipment.

The antidote was developed by Dalan An...

Dungeons and Dugin: How an Alliance of Authoritarians Hopes to Destroy a Politics of Solidarity It's Going Down

This February, anarchists, antifascists, and people across the Left raised the alarm about the Rage Against the War Machine rally, which was organized by the far-Right Mises Caucus of the Libertarian Party and brought together far-Right grifters with pseudo-populist blowhards, influencers, and washed up politicians. Neo-Nazis like Matthew Heimbach, who has long attempted to brand himself as a socialist, was also in attendance, and later took part in a small event put on by the disgraced Center for Political Innovation (CPI), a pro-Putin grouping which seeks to build alliances with the far-Right against the West. But what brought this island of unwanted toys together in the first place?

On this episode of the Its Going Down podcast, we speak with Rob from The Right Podcast, and unpack the grifters and influencers pushing a populist alliance against wokeness on the tankie Left and fascist far-Right. This includes a look at Duginism, the Center of Political Innovation (CPI) and its leader, Caleb Maupin, the so-called MAGA Communism of grifters like Jackson Hinkle, why the Right is so spun on Putin, and much more.

Yes, Too Old To Be President is a Thing Freethought Blogs

Biden just demonstrated it. Basically, he just said I dont give a shit because none of this will affect me and signed off on the Willow project the largest oil extraction plan for Alaska, ever.

He ran as an environmentalist. Candidate Biden said: [whitehouse.gov]

I come here today with a message: As President, I have a responsibility to act with urgency and resolve when our nation faces clear and present danger. And thats what climate change is about. It is literally, not figuratively, a clear and present danger.

The health of our citizens and our communities is literally at stake.

The U.N.s leading international climate scientists called the latest climate report nothing less than, quote, code red for humanity. Let me say it again: Code red for humanity. Its not a group of political official elected officials. These are the scientists.

He cant even conveniently blame Joe Manchin or Kirsten Sinema for this one.

Climate change is literally an existential threat to our nation and to the world.

So my message today is this: Since Congress is not acting as it should and these guys here are, but were not getting many Republican votes this is an emergency. An emergency. And I will I will look at it that way.

Of course we cant expect honesty from politicians. Of course we are cynical and un-trusting. Of course we still have to consider the lesser of two evils when we look at the two bowls of shit the two party system serves up to us; naturally well take the one with the sriracha sauce on it.

Midjourney AI and mjr: Joe Biden lights Alaska on fire.

Of course there are lots of folks up in Alaska who want this. Why wouldnt they? Its money and jobs and its going to create even more jobs when all the coastal cities flood, the midwest burns under drought, Calcutta floods, and there are massive die-offs from heat and drought. Those jobs that Biden is helping create wont kick in until safely after hes dead and buried. So, check the do not give a shit box....

What do you think of finance? Freethought Blogs

Dear readers, what do you think of the finance industry?

Ideally, I would keep this short and give up the floor to commenters. But Ill start by saying I work in the finance industry. I am not a finance expert, Im just a data scientist. I am ambivalent about the moral value of the industry.

I know from hanging out in leftist spaces that a lot of people feel much more strongly about the finance industry. Strongly negative. Im curious to hear more.

Is it just vibes, or are there more specific objections? Is it related to specific sectors of the industry such as lending, investment, banking? Or perhaps political influence from financial institutions?

And what do you think of government regulation of the finance industry?  Ive noticed that many people are angry at the finance industry because of events in the 2008 financial crisis, but this anger can be taken in diametrically opposed directions.  In the US we got greater regulation in the form of the Dodd-Frank act, but we also got cryptocurrency, an evil twin to the finance industry without regulation.  I tend to be in favor of regulations, although Im not necessarily knowledgeable about all the details.

Can We Stop the Greed-Heads From Destroying Banking & More? WhoWhatWhy

The failure of the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) shows us, once again, that unrestrained greed isnt good. For even modest greed to have a positive effect in society, it must be regulated.

The CEO of SVB, Greg Becker, didnt like the regulations imposed after the 2008 financial meltdown by Congresss Dodd-Frank legislation, and spent over a half-million dollars bribing er, influencing legislators (an activity legalized by five Republicans on the Supreme Court) to change the law and exempt his and other smaller, regional banks from what he argued was the heavy hand of government.

While SVB and other smaller banks were generally prosperous and profitable, many wanted to escape from the regulations Congress imposed to protect both depositors and the economy, so they spread some money around Washington, DC. Donald Trump then enthusiastically signed the deregulation of smaller banks like SBV into law in 2018.

https://twitter.com/MeidasTouch/status/1634777100350783489

As Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) noted this weekend:

Lets be clear. The failure of Silicon Valley Bank is a direct result of an absurd 2018 bank deregulation bill signed by Donald Trump that I strongly opposed. Five years ago, the Republican Director of the Congressional Budget Office released a report finding that this legislation would increase the likelihood that a large financial firm with assets of between $100 billion and $250 billion would fail.

Five years later predictably SVB went into receivership and those whod put their money in its trust were looking at substantial losses while, once again, confidence in the entire system is shaken.

At New Yorks First Republic Bank, people were standing in line as the weekend began, ...

Where Lies My Empathy Animals vs. Humans Freethought Blogs

I spend a lot of time watching true crime documentaries. Out of all the outrageous, horrible, violent stories Ive heard about humans, it bothers me more when an animal gets hurt.

Does anyone else feel this way?

A few days ago I was watching a show where an alpaca was attacked. While they didnt actually show the attack you could hear the alpaca crying out in pain. It was the most disturbing thing Ive experienced in a long time. I keep hearing the alpacas cry in my head and found it necessary to cuddle with an alpaca plushie I bought a few years ago. My throat just stays in my stomach.

The true crime documentaries never made me do that.

Am I sensitive about animals? Desensitized to human suffering? Both?

I am an animal person. As I write this, five of our eight cats are enjoying their new gigantic kitty condo. But even if my house wasnt ruled by a small army of cats, I think I would still feel the same way.

Humans are capable of evil whereas animals are innocent and just trying to survive. I think thats why it bothers me so much.

I am a sensitive and emotional person in general. I cry a lot when I watch TV. I just thought it was interesting how the alpaca had such an emotional impact on me more so than other stories involving people.

Can anyone relate?

Mutual Aid and Banner Drops Push Back on Ongoing Attacks on the Houseless in Aberdeen, WA It's Going Down

Report on ongoing actions pushing back on attacks on the houseless in so-called Aberdeen, WA. Originally published on Sabot Media.

After delivering a 72-hour notice on Monday, the City moved in around 10am on Friday with bulldozers and dump trucks in order to commit an illegal sweep of the River St encampment of unhoused individuals.

Many people had no time to prepare as the week was filled with rain and wind. Despite being given a sheet of paper that described a process for the City to hold and store their property for 60 days, everything that wasnt grabbed by the campers and set out on tarps across the train tracks was thrown in the back of the dump truck with all the other debris.

The City was using building code violations and health and safety as reasons to commit this illegal act. Although, now the campers have been further traumatized, stolen from, and will now be forced into tiny tents instead of the more spacious and easier to heat wooden structures that had been built up. There is no way this callous action was aimed at securing better living conditions for those affected.

The police were there to make sure that anyone who provided any resistance was threatened with arrest.

SOAP, or Save Our Aberdeen Please our local fascist political organization was present to video tape and laugh at peoples trauma. Their political base elected the very Mayor and City Council members who made today possible. They are well organized and motivated, and our counter operations should not underestimate them.

With smiles on their faces like this was just another day at work, the City workers used two large claw machines to smash and lift the debris into many dump trucks, the remainder was swept and shoveled up.

Chehalis River Mutual Aid Network was on site before the City. They set up a canopy with food and coffee, distributed literature on the laws and rights of people on the streets, and took some surveys responses from campers affected by the Citys actions. They also held signs in protest of the Citys actions.

First Party canvassing robot crashes into house (Fiction) Freethought Blogs

First Party for Bolingbrook robot crashed into a residents house. According to eyewitnesses, no one was injured, but the robot made a large hole in the wall.

Adam, a resident who asked that we not use his last name, described what happened.

I heard this loud bang from the living room. When I arrived, I saw a wheeled robot with the First Party logo painted on it. I yelled at it, then realized that it might have been a bad idea. It turned it cameras at me, and said that if I enjoyed living in Bolingbrook, I should thank the First Party. Well, I did like Bolingbrook, until this happened.

Another resident witnessed the robot crash into the house. First it drove up to me, and asked if I was supporting the First Party. I said no. It spit out a pamphlet at me and said it would change my mind. Then it charged at my neighbors house. Lets just say I dont think robots will replace human canvassers soon.

Sources within the First Party confirmed they owned the robot, and were planning on using it to counter the Bolingbrook Independant Voices partys drone advantage.

One source explained. Our polling suggests voters are swayed by areal drone videos. They think a political party that uses drones is forward thinking. Were countering this by using automated canvassers. Because in politics, you need to win the ground war, not the air war.

The sources agreed the robot crashed into the house because of its blue color. The robots AI believes everything blue is the sky, and therefore didnt recognize the house. Until programmers can correct the problem, the First Party will stop using the drones.

As for the damage, Adam claimed the First Party sent contractors to repair the damage. He also claimed that Trustee Michael Carpanzano visited the house. After handing a check to Adam, Carpanzano took a selfie with him. Adam agreed not to sue the First Party.

Their people did such a great job. Its like it never happened. Money has a way of soothing hurt feelings. But Im still voting for the BIV slate.

When reached for comment, BIV candidate and Village Trustee Sheldon Watts said, My running mate would love to spend a mental health day with your staff.

Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta, the leader of the First Party for Bolingbrook, denies the First Party has robots. If it werent for social media, we wouldnt need to campaign for votes.

Alexander-Basta asked the reporter to stay on the phone because she might have Earth shattering news. She then called Village IT staffer Alice into her office.

We believe everyone can build a Strong Town, but all too often, political differences divide communities, and instead of working together to build stronger neighborhoods from a bottom-up approach, we get caught up in contentious, top-down ideas and conversations.

One such political divide has developed around the concept of the 15-minute city: a term used to describe traditional neighborhoods. While to urbanists it describes a walkable place, to critics, its a potential infringement on personal freedoms. In this episode of the Strong Towns Podcast, Chuck Marohn dives into the controversies surrounding the 15-minute city.

Independent Autopsy Reveals Tortuguita Killed While Seated with Hands Raised It's Going Down

Report from the Atlanta Community Press Collective (ACPC) on the results of an independent autopsy of slain forest defender, Manuel Tortuguita Esteban Paez Tern.

The family of slain activist Manuel Tortuguita Esteban Paez Tern released the findings of the independent autopsy today that indicates Tortuguita was killed by a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) SWAT team while seated in a cross-legged, with the left leg partially over the right leg, and had their hands up, palms facing toward their upper body at the time of their death.

The full findings, conducted by a forensic pathologist, Kris Sperry, M.D., on Jan. 31 at the Connor-Westbury Funeral home in Griffin, Georgia, reveal Tortuguita was shot 14 times, with wounds stemming from a mixture of predominately handgun caliber bullets as well as both a shotgun slug and shotgun pellets with trajectories that indicate Tortuguita was facing their killers. Sperrys report states, it is impossible to tell if [Tortuguita] had been holding a firearm, or not holding a firearm, either before [they were] shot or while [they were] being shot the multiple times. One observation the report does make is that Tortuguita raised their hands and arms up and in front of [their] body during the course of the shooting.

Sperry also asserts that, none of the identified firearm wounds exhibited any evidence of close range firing (the presence of gunpowder soot and/or stippling). This is particularly notable, as there were gunshot wounds in both of Tortuguitas hands which would likely show evidence of gunpowder residue had they fired their gun at the GSP trooper. The report notes that gunpowder residue may have been washed from the body during the first autopsy, but this is very unlikely.

These findings stand contrary to early reports released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the agency heading the investigation into the the killing. According to the GBI, Tortuguita fired on a GSP trooper first and was killed by return fire. Two days after the raid the GBI released an image of the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield they allege Tortuguita shot a trooper with, and stated there is a ballistics match between the bullet recovered from the injured trooper and Tortuguitas gun.

Activists believe that friendly fire caused the troopers injuries. One of the four body camera videos released by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) Feb. 6 supports this assessment. In it, an APD officer can be heard remarking, you fucked your own...

Nord Stream Bombing: The Plot Thickens and Thickens WhoWhatWhy

It aint what you dont know that gets you into trouble. Its what you know for sure that just aint so. Mark Twain

In last weeks column, I raised questions about those claiming to absolutely know that the US government was behind the bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.

People cite that claim as a basis for creating a kind of complicated equivalency between Russia and the US, which is then used to argue for not helping the Ukrainians defend themselves from Russias furious assault.

More reasons to question that certitude have emerged since. Here are a few news items of note, and below that, Ill reprint an email I got from a Norwegian journalist regarding Seymour Hershs assertion that the US and Norway worked together to bomb the pipeline.

***

German authorities just reported a breakthrough in their ongoing investigation of the Nord Stream bombing. They say they have identified a small team of saboteurs using a yacht to transport explosives.

The yacht was rented by a Polish-registered company, apparently owned by two Ukrainians, from a German company.

The group is reported, by an unnamed source, to have sailed from the north German port of Rostock on September 6, 2022, and were seen the next day on the Danish island of Christianso. The yacht had been returned to the owner uncleaned. German investigators searched the ship in January of this year...

Michigan Lawmakers Want to Pass an 11-Bill Gun Safety Package. Heres What Would Change (Maria)

The author writes, Michigan lawmakers are aiming to pass an 11-bill gun safety package across the state this week, considering provisions that would require background checks on gun purchases, create safe storage laws, and establish extreme risk protection orders also known as red flag laws. Democrats, who have control of the state government for the first time in some 40 years, hope to deliver on the promise of advancing gun safety following a Michigan State University mass shooting last month that left three dead and five wounded. The package, which includes Senate Bills 76-86, was introduced days after last months tragedy at Michigan State University.

Never trust a pope Freethought Blogs

Not even the ones who seem nice and kindly. Theyve all got a dogma driving them. Pope Francis has said some stupid things, as the Daily Wire gleefully reports.

Gender ideology, today, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations, Francis said. Why is it dangerous? Because it blurs differences and the value of men and women. All humanity is the tension of differences. It is to grow through the tension of differences. The question of gender is diluting the differences and making the world the same, all dull, all alike, and that is contrary to the human vocation.

What is gender ideology? Because, near as I can tell, its simply that all people are of equal worth, no matter what their sex or gender or sexual preferences. Gender is not an ideology. Its just who people are.

He thinks its dangerous because it blurs the differences and value of men and women. I think men and women are of equal value, so blurring doesnt matter. What differences in value is he concerned about? Also, Im not seeing any blurring of differences, Im seeing a celebration of differences, where people with non-mainstream ideas are being allowed to flourish.

What are these tensions hes talking about, and how does the question of gender (what question?) dilute them? Diminishing differences, requiring everyone to fit into one of precisely two molds, is what would make the world dull and all alike. Would it make the world less dull if we told all the florists youre only allowed red roses and white lilies? It would certainly increase some tensions.

Also, a Catholic pope does not get to complain about ideological colonization. Catholicism is definitely an ideology, unlike gender, over a thousand years. Its ironic to complain about ideological conversion, but I guess that only applies to imaginary ideologies he doesnt like.

Governments shut down the internet more often than ever, report says [WantToKnow.info: All News]

More countries shut down the internet in 2022 than ever before, according to a new report by digital rights researchers. Authorities in 35 countries instituted internet shutdowns at least 187 times, according to the New York-based digital rights watchdog Access Now. Nearly half of these shutdowns occurred in India, and if that nation is excluded, 2022 saw the most number of shutdowns globally since the group began monitoring disruptions in 2016. [The] report ... spans complete blackouts, suspensions of specific phone networks or social media apps, and the slowing down of internet speeds. Triggers for shutdowns have included large protests, conflict situations, elections and even examinations. Whatever the situation, they make it substantially more difficult for people to communicate and receive or send news, and they incur significant economic costs, which prompted the United Nations last year to call for governments to avoid using such a blunt tactic. "This can be a big warning sign of how the human rights situation is deteriorating, and shutdowns are often associated with increased levels of insecurity and other restrictions," said Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman at the U.N. Human Rights Office. A majority of [India's] 84 disruptions were logged in Indian-administered Kashmir, part of a disputed region in the Himalayas. India has at times cited a desire to control social unrest in the territory, where there is a separatist movement. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and mass civilian protests in Iran also led to internet shutdowns

U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks [WantToKnow.info: All News]

On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness. Yet the company, founded in 2016, didn't seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 and the agency rejected the application. Musk has detailed a bold vision for Neuralink: Both disabled and healthy people will pop into neighborhood facilities for speedy surgical insertions of devices with functions ranging from curing obesity, autism, depression or schizophrenia to web-surfing and telepathy. Musk also has said Neuralink would restore full mobility to paralyzed patients. Reuters exclusively reported late last year that the federal government was investigating the company's treatment of its research animals. The probe was launched amid growing employee concern that the company is rushing experiments, causing additional suffering and deaths of pigs, sheep and monkeys. Musk's company ... trails at least one direct rival in the race for FDA approval. Synchron, a competitor making a BCI implant, has won the agency's blessing for human trials. The company first tested its device on four patients in Australia who successfully sent text messages with their minds. Synchron recently raised $75 million, including from funds backed by tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.

We then traced their activity across the internet, identifying their involvement ... in about 20 countries including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Panama, Senegal, Mexico, Morocco, India, the United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, Belarus and Ecuador. The analysis revealed a vast array of bot activity, with Aims' fake social media profiles getting involved in a dispute in California over nuclear power; a #MeToo controversy in Canada ... and an election in Senegal.

FBI, Pentagon helped research facial recognition for street cameras, drones [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The FBI and the Defense Department were actively involved in research and development of facial recognition software that they hoped could be used to identify people from video footage captured by street cameras and flying drones, according to thousands of pages of internal documents that provide new details about the government's ambitions to build out a powerful tool for advanced surveillance. The documents, revealed in response to an ongoing Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union filed against the FBI, show how closely FBI and Defense officials worked with academic researchers to refine artificial-intelligence techniques that could help in the identification or tracking of Americans without their awareness or consent. Many of the records relate to the Janus program, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, or IARPA. The improved facial recognition system was ultimately folded into a search tool, called Horus, and made available to the Pentagon's Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, which helps provide military technologies to civilian police forces. No federal laws regulate how facial recognition systems can be used. The tool's use in domestic mass surveillance would be a "nightmare scenario," said Nathan Wessler, a deputy director at the ACLU. "It could give the government the ability to pervasively track as many people as they want for as long as they want. There's no good outcome for that in a democratic society."

C.I.A. Is Collecting in Bulk Certain Data Affecting Americans, Senators Warn [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The Central Intelligence Agency has for years been collecting in bulk, without a warrant, some kind of data that can affect Americans' privacy. At the same time, [the C.I.A.] declared that a report about the same topic, which had prompted the letter, must remain fully classified. That report, called "Deep Dive II," was part of a set of studies by a watchdog board scrutinizing intelligence community operations under Executive Order 12333. In March 2021, the Senate Intelligence Committee received a copy of the report. Two Democrats on the panel, Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, urged Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, and William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, to declassify the activity. The senators suggested that its hidden existence cut against Americans' understanding that various pieces of legislation enacted in recent years "limit and, in some cases, prohibit the warrantless collection of Americans' records." In 2015, Congress banned bulk collection of telecommunications metadata under the Patriot Act and limited other types of bulk collection by the F.B.I. under laws governing domestic activities like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. Yet "the C.I.A. has secretly conducted its own bulk program" under Executive Order 12333, the senators wrote. "It has done so entirely outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection, and without any of the judicial, congressional or even executive branch oversight."

The U.S. Set Up the Afghan Army to Fail [WantToKnow.info: All News]

When the Afghan military and government collapsed in the summer of 2021, it was the worst failure of the U.S. defense establishment since the fall of Saigon. A new report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, issued this week sheds critical light on what went so terribly wrong in America's longest war and how tens of thousands of ordinary Afghans were set up by their leaders and foreign partners to fight and die for a doomed cause. The American mission in Afghanistan had been to build an army that could stand on its own feet to resist the Taliban. In the end, however, the Afghan military was not only riddled with corruption, but also designed to function properly only so long as the foreign contractors and soldiers remained around to manage it. In effect, similar to its disastrous experience in South Vietnam, the United States had attempted to build an army suitable for a modern, industrialized country like itself, rather than one that would fit the realities of a poor and agrarian state. "The types of security forces that we were trying to build, which were relatively sophisticated and relied on advanced technology and electronics logistics systems, were just not within the general capacity of what Afghanistan would be able to use in sustainable ways," said Jonathan Schroden, an Afghanistan expert at the Center for Naval Analyses. "The real damning thing about what is in the report is that people had been telling the U.S. military this for years."

Hawkish Israel Is Pulling U.S. Into War With Iran [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides appeared to endorse a plan for Israel to attack Iranian nuclear facilities with U.S. support. Nides's words come after recent high-level military drills between Israel and the United States intended to showcase the ability to strike Iranian targets, as well as recent acts of sabotage and assassination inside Iran believed to have been carried out by both countries. The Israeli escalations mean that the U.S. now faces the unsavory prospect of a major crisis flaring up in the Middle East at the exact moment when its bandwidth is already stretched thin because of a major war in Europe and its deteriorating relationship with China. "The decision to leave the JCPOA ... allowed Iran to restart its nuclear program and raise once again the question of what the U.S., Israel, or anyone else might do about it," said Stephen Walt ... at the Harvard Kennedy School, referring to the nuclear deal by the initials of its former name, Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The nuclear deal was intended to avoid the Middle East confrontation now visible on the horizon. Signed by President Barack Obama in 2015, the deal traded strict limits on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for its reintegration into the global economy. When President Donald Trump violated the deal ... this pragmatic arrangement went out the window not only removing limits on Iran's nuclear program, but also politically empowering hard-liners inside Iran who had balked at negotiating in the first place.

Biden's Chip War With China Is an Imperial Struggle for High-Tech Supremacy [WantToKnow.info: All News]

The rivalry between the U.S. and China has hit fever pitch. Despite their deep economic integration and record trade in goods of $690 billion in 2022, the two powers are at loggerheads over everything from military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific to Russia's imperialist invasion of Ukraine, to trade and investment in the Global South. The U.S., of course, remains the world's dominant imperialist power, but now China poses a threat to its hegemony. At the center of this conflict are microchips, which are as important to global capitalism today as oil. Washington put its high-tech weaponry on full display in the 1991 Gulf War. Triumphant, Washington adopted a new imperial strategy of superintending the world economy by incorporating states into a neoliberal world order of free trade globalization. The U.S. used the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization and UN to enforce this order. The U.S. retained its lead in the design of chips, but increasingly fabrication was done by [Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company] in Taiwan. The Trump administration ... targeted Beijing's tech industry. Using national security as justification, the Commerce Department prohibited U.S. companies from selling chips, hardware and software to the company. The Biden administration doubled down on Trump's strategy of great power rivalry. [Author Chris] Miller argues, "Taiwan isn't simply the source of the advanced chips that both countries' militaries are betting on. It's also the most likely battleground."

The Forgotten Terrorist Pretext of the Vietnam War [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Antiterrorist moral fervor and ideological blinders propelled the U.S. into its biggest foreign policy blunder since World War Two. The U.S. government constantly embellished the storyline to demonize the communist opposition. A CIA operative provided materials for a massive bomb that ripped through a main square in Saigon in 1952. A Life magazine photographer was waiting on the scene, and his resulting snap appeared with a caption blaming the carnage on Viet Minh Communists. The Kennedy administration sought credibility by profoundly deceiving the American people and Congress regarding its Vietnam policy. In August 1963, South Vietnamese Special Forces "carried out midnight raids against Buddhist pagodas throughout the country. More than 1400 people, mostly monks were arrested and many of them were beaten," according to the Pentagon Papers. The CIA was bankrolling these Special Forces, which were supposed to be used for covert operations against the Viet Cong or North Vietnam, not for religious repression. The Johnson administration exploited the terrorist label to sway Americans to support greater U.S. Involvement in Vietnam. In a special message to Congress on May 18, 1964 seeking additional fund for Vietnam, LBJ declared, "the Viet Cong guerrillas, under orders from their Communist masters in the North, have intensified terrorist actions against the peaceful people of South Vietnam. This increased terrorism requires increased response."

How a Movement That Never Killed Anyone Became the FBI's No. 1 Domestic Terrorism Threat [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Who the Justice Department decides to prosecute as a domestic terrorist has little to do with the harm they've inflicted or the threat they pose to human life. Police and FBI agents ... arrested a dozen of [activist Joe] Dibee's associates in the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front. They were charged with conspiring to burn down factories that slaughtered animals for meat, timber mills that disrupted sensitive ecosystems, government facilities that penned wild horses, and a ski resort. While the arsons, which never hurt or killed anyone, largely took place in the late 1990s, the wave of arrests known as the "Green Scare" came in the post-9/11 era, when terrorism was the FBI's prevailing obsession. The fur and biomedical industries had spent years lobbying the Justice Department and lawmakers to go after eco-activists. When the planes hit the twin towers, industry groups seized on the opportunity to push legislation, and federal law enforcement ramped up pursuit of radical activists in the name of counterterrorism. Of 70 federal prosecutions of radical environmentalists and animal rights activists identified by The Intercept, 52 did not result in charges under anti-terrorism laws. Yet the defendants were repeatedly called terrorists by the Justice Department. The Patriot Act's broad new definition of domestic terrorism, signed into law in October 2001, was another step toward institutionalizing the notion that eco-saboteurs were terrorists.

If we can farm metal from plants, what else can we learn from life on Earth? [WantToKnow.info: All News]

For the past couple of years, I've been working with researchers in northern Greece who are farming metal. They are experimenting with a trio of shrubs known to scientists as "hyperaccumulators": plants which have evolved the capacity to thrive in naturally metal-rich soils that are toxic to most other kinds of life. They do this by drawing the metal out of the ground and storing it in their leaves and stems, where it can be harvested like any other crop. As well as providing a source for rare metals in this case nickel, although hyperaccumulators have been found for zinc, aluminium, cadmium and many other metals, including gold these plants actively benefit the earth by remediating the soil, making it suitable for growing other crops, and by sequestering carbon in their roots. Hyperaccumulators are far from being the only non-humans that we might learn from. Physarum polycephalum, a particularly lively slime mould, can solve the "travelling salesman" problem a test for finding the shortest route between multiple cities faster and more efficiently than any supercomputer humans have devised. Spiders store information in their webs, using them as a kind of extended cognition: a mind outside the body entirely. A new conception of intelligence is emerging from scientific research: rather than human intelligence being unique or the peak of some graduated curve, there appear to be many different kinds of intelligence with their own strengths, competencies and suitabilities.

Note: This was written by James Bridle, an artist and technologist who was able to paralyze a self-driving car using salt and road markers. For more on his work, check out his fascinating perspective on how artificial intelligence technologies could be designed based on cooperation and relationships naturally reflected in living systems, as opposed to competition and domination.

Rats with backpacks could help rescue earthquake survivors [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes can level entire towns, and for the search and rescue teams trying to find survivors, it's a painstaking task. But an unlikely savior is being trained up to help out: rats. The project, conceived of by Belgian non-profit APOPO, is kitting out rodents with tiny, high-tech backpacks to help first responders search for survivors among rubble in disaster zones. "Rats are typically quite curious and like to explore and that is key for search and rescue," says Donna Kean, a behavioral research scientist and leader of the project. In addition to their adventurous spirit, their small size and excellent sense of smell make rats perfect for locating things in tight spaces, says Kean. The rats are currently being trained to find survivors in a simulated disaster zone. They must first locate the target person in an empty room, pull a switch on their vest that triggers a beeper, and then return to base, where they are rewarded with a treat. While the rodents are still in the early stages of training, APOPO is collaborating with the Eindhoven University of Technology to develop a backpack, which is equipped with a video camera, two-way microphone, and location transmitter to help first responders communicate with survivors. APOPO has been training dogs and rats at its base in Tanzania in the scent detection of landmines and tuberculosis for over a decade. Its programs use African Giant Pouched Rats, which have a longer lifespan in captivity of around eight years.

Mobilising Assam's 'hargila army': how 10,000 women saved India's rarest stork [WantToKnow.info: All News]

Some of the women are wearing papier-mache headdresses shaped like long-necked birds. As they sing, one of them gets to her feet and starts dancing. They are part of the "hargila army", a group of rural women in the Indian state of Assam who work to protect one of the world's rarest storks: the greater adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius) or hargila (meaning "bone swallower" in Assamese) as the scavenger bird is known locally. They are celebrating the recent UN Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth award, conferred on the group's biologist founder, Dr Purnima Devi Barman. Barman won the award for her achievement in mobilising more than 10,000 women to help save the stork. "They are the protectors of the birds and of their nesting trees," says Barman. The birds were not just reviled, they were seen as a bad omen and carriers of disease. Villagers attacked them with stones, cut down trees where they roosted communally and burned their nests. Today the greater adjutant is endangered, with fewer than 1,200 adult birds in its last strongholds. Most of the global population is found in Assam, making Barman and the hargila army's work critical to its survival. Today, the once-maligned bird is now a cultural symbol, appearing on everything from towels to road-safety campaigns. In the villages of Dadara, Pacharia and Singimari (all in Kamrup district), greater adjutants' nests have increased from 28 in 2010 to more than 250 according to Barman's last count, making the area the world's largest breeding colony.

CAM and credulity Freethought Blogs

I was asked by a friend to take a look at this paper which he was surprised to see in a science journal. Its a weird and unconvincing paper, a Case report of instantaneous resolution of juvenile macular degeneration blindness after proximal intercessory prayer. Its actually a case of rummaging around in old medical files in order to report a miracle in 1972.

Heres the story: an 18 year old girl lost her vision in 1959 over the course of a few months, with no identified cause. She was diagnosed with 7/200 vision, attended a school for the blind, and lived as a blind person for 12 years. Then, even more suddenly, her vision recovered fully after her husband prayed for her.

When the couple went to bed later than normal (after midnight), her husband performed a hurried spiritual devotional practice (reading two Bible verses) and got on his knees to pray. She describes that they both began to cry as he began to pray, with a hand on her shoulder while she laid on the bed, and with great feeling and boldness he prayed: Oh, God! You can restore [] eyesight tonight, Lord. I know You can do it! And I pray You will do it tonight. At the close of the prayer, his wife opened her eyes and saw her husband kneeling in front of her, which was her first clear visual perception after almost 13 years of blindness.

An examination in 2001 revealed that she had 20/40 vision, and that her retinas looked normal.

I cant debunk this account, if thats what youre looking for. I could speculate about possible ways the story is misleading us, but we know nothing about the causes of the blindness or its cure, we dont even know that there was a physical basis for the blindness, and Im not going to diagnose an old medical condition thats what the authors of the paper are doing. All weve got are old records, and modern evidence that she can see, and no way to trace the actual history of her vision. Its an anecdote. Maybe she was actually cured by a miracle! Unfortunately, theres no way to analyze what actually happened.

Im skeptical that prayer is actually effective, though. This woman was devout, came from a very religious family and community, and youre telling me that the onset of blindness did not trigger a flurry of intense prayers from the woman, her family, and her church? Was that the first time her husband begged his god to restore her sight? Its awfully hard to believe that something th...

Its the first really nice day, so Im writing outside! Freethought Blogs

I decided to try a slightly different process than normal for the update on the movement to Stop Cop City and Defend the Atlanta Forest, so that post will be up tomorrow, and today you get something like a stream of consciousness.

Work on The Inner Tower is going well, for the most part. I think I will never understand why my brain just refuses to cooperate sometimes, for no discernible reason. Even so, Im following the map I laid out, and discovering an interesting landscape. There are a few geographic locations in that world that were established before I began the exploration that is writing a first draft. Beyond that, its been mostly blank, and the landscape has been filling in as I go.

When the plot of this thing started falling into my brain like Tetris blocks last year, I decided that I was going to be deliberately formulaic with my writing, and see what sort of interesting story I could create within more conventional limits. I say more conventional, because my first novel, Exits and Entrances, was very much experimental. The biggest difference youll probably notice, should you decide to read it, is that every other chapter is a short story thats peripheral to the main plot. I dont recall why I thought that was a good idea, but I think it turned out decently for a first novel. I dont think I was a particularly good writer at that point in time, but I try to remember that there are books out there that are much worse by every metric I can think of, save popularity.

I will have to return to that particular laboratory, because there are two books still to write for that trilogy, but for my current project, Ive chosen to constraints and rules from bits of writing advice Ive encountered over the years.

I guess you could say that this series just a different kind of experiment, but I think itll be a more familiar reading experience for regular young adult fantasy readers, at least for the first couple volumes. After that, things will get a little stranger, because I just cant help myself.

Part of the reason youre getting this particular blog post, is that I was getting tired of video posts, and I doubt Im alone in that. The other part is that, after a cold snap in which we actually got snow, its the first classic Beautiful Spring Day since the sun went away. That means that Im sitting at a folding table out in the middle of our little walled village, while His Holiness Saint Ray the Cat explores.

While there are cats and foxes that...

A tiny scrap of good news Freethought Blogs

West Virginia had a bill in the works to explicitly allow the teaching of intelligent design creationism.

Teachers in public schools, including public charter schools, that include any one or more of grades kindergarten through 12, may teach intelligent design as a theory of how the universe and/or humanity came to exist.

Never fear, Americans United is on the case. It didnt pass, not yet at least.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State President and CEO Rachel Laser issued the following statement in response to the West Virginia Legislature adjourning without passing Senate Bill 619, a bill that would have authorized public school teachers to teach intelligent design creationism:

We at Americans United are thankful that West Virginia public school students wont be forced to sit through lessons on intelligent design creationism an inherently religious doctrine that has no place in public schools. Public schools are not Sunday schools; their purpose is to teach students sound science, not preach religious beliefs.

While the intelligent design bill failed this session, its alarming that the bill got as much traction as it did. The bills supporters blatantly ignored the Constitutions promise to separate church and state the protector of religious freedom and would have flouted decades of court precedent that bars the teaching of religious doctrine in public schools, including an Americans United case that successfully proved intelligent design was simply creationism rebranded.

If legislators insist on resurrecting this bill, Americans United is ready to defend the Constitution and protect public education and the religious freedom of West Virginia families. Using our public schools to impose religious doctrines like intelligent design on a captive audience of schoolchildren is part of the Christian Nationalist agenda to force all of us to live by their narrow beliefs. We need a national recommitment to the separation of church and state. Our public schools and our democracy depend on it.

The creationists are persistent little buggers, thats for sure.

Who would want this? Freethought Blogs

Also, where is Ray Comfort getting the money?

Thats a box full of crap you can get for free from LivingWaters/london. Just fill out the form at that link, giving Ray Comfort your address, and he will ship up to ten boxes of his book and Bible tracts about the coronation.

You could have a thousand copies of Rays book and six thousand cheesy tracts delivered to your doorstep, totally free. Unless youre in the UK, EU, Australia, or New Zealand, in which case you dont get the books, just 10,000 cheesy tracts. Or if youre outside those countries, you get nothing, and will have to pick up your free tracts in person in London.

From this I have determined that Canada is truly blessed.

I thought about ordering a box, just to bleed a few drops from the bloated vampiric corpse of Ray Comforts unaccountably rich organization, but decided not to. My reasons: a) its not enough to exsanguinate the parasite, b) it would just encourage him, c) its incredibly wasteful and would just have to be recycled, and d) I dont want to read his stupid book (Ive read enough Comfort to know it will be awful), I dont want his tracts, and I dont need a box of waste paper in my house. The man is giving away free garbage, and that does not appeal.

I still have to wonder, though: does ol Ray have some multi-millionaire sugar daddy? Or does he get so much in donations from a horde of deluded Christians that he can afford these ridiculous give-aways? Does he pay taxes on all of his revenues that he then spends on evangelical nonsense?

By the way, Ray Comfort is very, very excited about the coronationbut hes not going to bother to go himself. He wants his minions to do the humiliating work of distributing his crap to all the people who dont want it in London.

We Love Our Little Racist Daughter WhoWhatWhy

With a Twist

Our daughter Megan was six years old when we discovered she was racist. We were dining at a new Mexican restaurant in our town, and suddenly Megan called the waiter a derogatory term.

My wife and I were shocked. Megan had never used this language before, but after it occurred a few more times over the following weeks, we took her to a specialist who guided her through a series of tests. Afterwards, while our daughter waited patiently in the outer room, the specialist looked at us solemnly. Shes racist all right.

We asked him what we should do.

He gave us a leaflet and told us there were a lot of support groups that could help her negotiate her life as a racist.

Racism used to be frowned upon, he said. Society took a dim view. But attitudes are changing now, and in many places its perfectly acceptable to be racist.

We asked him where these places were, and he said they were all over the country, often in rural areas and often in the South, but not just in the South. Im sure you could find a perfectly good racist town not 20 miles from here, he said.

We said we didnt want to move, but we were worried that our school system might not be ready to accommodate a racist.

Youd be surprised, he said. A lot of racists have been running for school board, and that changes the whole complexion of the school. Sometimes literally.

We were concerned that Megans racism might inhibit her job opportunities, but when we got home and read through the leaflet, we learned that there were many careers open to racists, including right-wing think tanks, politics, and law enforcement. We still considered putting her in an antiracism program or hiring a private tutor.

But weve learned that being racist is no impediment to a successful life, and in fact a recent president of the United States was racist, as are several current members of Congress.

Our other daughter, Colwyn, was born perfectly I was going to say normal, but of course thats putting a value judgment on racism, which weve learned not to do.

Megan is 12 now and doing well in school. She started a Junior Whiteness League and wrote her history term paper on the Replacement Theory. When she got a D, she complained to the newly elected school commit...

Advocates Across The State Convene to Un-stroad Louisiana Strong Towns Media

A gathering of Strong Towns advocates and Allendale Strong members in Shreveport in 2021.

A city is only as strong as its weakest neighborhood. These words form a core tenet for Allendale Strong, a learning and doing community in Shreveport, Louisiana which mobilized in opposition to the highway that has haunted its neighborhood for years. Now, nearly a decade after it was founded by Dorothy Wiley, Allendale Strong is coordinating with peer groups across the state of Louisiana to challenge the current development pattern. Theyre referring to themselves as the 4 Corners Coalition (4CC) and ultimately, their goal is to un-stroad Louisiana.

I grew up along a stroad, remarked Nick Lanata, a Baton Rouge-based Strong Towns member and data scientist part of the 4CC. Hes referring to the term coined by Strong Towns President Chuck Marohn 2013 to describe street-road hybrids that fail spectacularly at being either. Lanata not only brings his first-hand experience living adjacent to a multi-lane thoroughfare but a data-centric approach to the statewide coalition. By interpreting numbers and correlations, he wants to enhance the argument for why stroads are not only dangerousstatistically, they have exponentially higher crash ratios than streets or highwaysbut also financially unproductive.

We cant just convert stroads into streets or roads, Lanata concedes. There needs to be a

Community Defense Blocks Sacramento Proud Boys From Disrupting Childrens Event It's Going Down

Report back on community defense of a childrens event in Sacramento, California from Proud Boys.

On Sunday, March 12th, at 11:30 AM, a local black owned shop in Sacramento near Oak Park (a historic black and brown neighborhood) held a family friendly drag queen story hour. The event was advertised on their social media earlier this month, to much excitement of the local community. Last night at about 6:50 PM, a neo-Nazi group known for encouraging anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, White Lives Matter California posted a tweet alerting their followers to the drag event. The same kind of alert was sounded by these Nazis earlier this week against a transgender day of joy rally and march on Friday.

The shop owner was alerted of this threat and began to reach out to her local community for support. The owners and performers decided to continue with the event as a show of solidarity and defiance in the face of hate. With less than 24 hours notice of the threat, the community responded in overwhelming support. A Florida-Sized Roadblock for the League of Women Voters Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

The nonpartisan League of Women Voters has been facing a nationwide backlash after decades of going about its business of surveying candidates, registering voters, hosting debates and lobbying for its causes with little fuss.

ProPublica reported in August how the volatile political climate has caught up with the league, with conservatives increasingly portraying it as a decidedly liberal entity. Since that story was published, weve seen candidates reject invitations to debate and try to undermine the leagues work in registering new voters. In September in Illinois, then-Lake County Board member Dick Barr, a Republican, publicly apologized for a Facebook post in which he called the league partisan hags.

This week, the group found itself once again in the middle of a political controversy. This time it was in Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis has sought to reshape a wide range of discourse, including by making it easier for public officials to sue for defamation and restricting discussions of systemic racism in workplace trainings. The league revealed that it had been denied permission by the Florida Department of Management Services to hold an outdoor rally on the steps of the Old Capitol in Tallahassee under a new DeSantis administration rule requiring groups to first get sponsorship from a sympathetic state agency.

The rule took effect March 1 and says the requested...

Triple Bank Collapse hits Silicon Valley & NY amid Economic Downturn UNICORN RIOT

Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapsed on Friday, March 10, after a wave of bad news rattled investors and depositors. While SVB was not systemically important to the U.S. economy, it was roughly the 16th-largest bank in America, by deposits, and was at the heart of the regions tech industry, bankrolling much of the sector. The Depression-era bank guarantor known as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) protects all deposits below $250,000 in regulated American banks, but many Silicon Valley Internet startups had deposited huge amounts of cash from funding rounds with the bank. Federal regulators stepped in to sort out the accounts. Bloomberg reported more than 90% of the deposits (now managed by government caretakers inside the new Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara) are above the FDIC guaranteed limit.

Unicorn Riot received word Friday of vendors warning payments should not be submitted to SVB-based accounts showing that impacts to everyday Internet business could be fast and widespread. We also learned it is believed that a 6:30 a.m. Eastern announcement on Monday will specify how the bank will be resolved. Also we heard JPMorgan has been ruled out as the main purchaser of the banks assets. On Sunday, March 12, U.S. authorities announced that depositors would be made whole on Monday.

This report covers the recent bank collapse, the Covid bailout, the 2007-08 Great Financial Crisis and some other sketchy recent economic trends.

Longtime critics of Wall Street self-dealing and inadequate transparency, the Martens at WallStreetonParade.com, noted, be sure to write down March 9, 2023 as the day that a full-blown bank run began at non-traditional banks in the U.S.

First the federally insured Silvergate Bank, a hub in the cryptocurrency world, started shutting down on Wednesday, March 8 followed by SVB on Friday morning. (Silvergate was entwined with the fraudulent businesses run by Sam Bankman-Fried, FTX and Alameda Research, more on that below.)

Events are moving fast. Late on Sunday news...

Gulfgate Tenants Fight Back Against Abusive Slumlords It's Going Down

Report back from the Houston Tenants Union in Texas about a recent campaign by tenants against an abusive slum lord.

Vera has been living at 7318 Thurow St. for a little over two years. During this time she has dealt with unlawful late fee collection, infestations of rats and other pests, non-functioning toilets and various other kinds of disrepair, all due to the landlords incompetence and malicious neglect. The male landlord has walked into her home without notice while she is nude after showering.

The landlords dumped an abused dog on the property that Jason, another Thurow St. tenant, nursed back to health and cared for over the last two years. When the Thurow tenants started objecting to the poor conditions the landlords retaliated by taking the dog. No one has seen the dog since. Jason has also helped care for the elderly father of the slumlords, who lives on the property. Often this elder is without adequate food, medical care, or hygiene.

Other tenants live in a windowless shack in the backyard that was poorly converted from a garage by the landlord, in clear violation of numerous safety and building codes. HCAD lists the structure as a garage, not as living space.

Now the Thurow Tenants are banding together to fight back against their slumlords. The tenants have been coordinating a strong campaign of documentation which can be found at Thurow Slums. They have also been distributing flyers throughout the area to warn others of the slumlords callous disregard for maintaining a safe home for the tenants at the property. The tenants have been motivated and actively resisting, recently they contacted Houston Tenants Union to help with their efforts.

Report Back from Noise Demo in Support of Those Facing Domestic Terrorism Charges in Atlanta, GA It's Going Down

Report back from recent noise demonstration in solidarity with those arrested in Atlanta on domestic terrorism charges. Originally posted to Scenes from the Atlanta Forest.

Supporters, family members, and beloved community members of the 23 young people charged with domestic terrorism at the South River Festival gathered outside of the DeKalb County Jail on March 8th to protest their unjust incarceration.

Parents gave speeches to their children locked inside, calling them heroes and promising to fight for them until they are free. Protestors chanted the names of all those arrested, sung freedom songs, and reassured each other they would keep fighting against these unjust charges. Other inmates shouted from their cells, describing the brown water, cold food, broken toilets, and other deplorable conditions at DeKalb County Jail.

Burning rags were thrown from windows as inmates joined the protest in solidarity. Despite the grim circumstances, the crowd of supporters was...

First Ever Tractor That Is Powered By Dung Of The Cow Developed By The Brits True Activist

Daily Mail

First came the solar-powered vehicles, then came cars that run on electricity. People have been looking for ways to power transportation without using the usual gas and diesel.

Here is New Hollands brand new tractor that runs on liquified methane. This is beneficial for farmers because it enables them to lower their emissions and save cash on rising diesel costs.

It has also been deemed as efficient for several other reasons. The company behind this innovative method says the fuel can actually be produced easily by methane that comes from cow pies. By doing this, they will be able to follow a more circular economic model in the most circular industry that is also just as important.

The breakthrough 270hp tractor is said to match the performance of the standard diesel-powered ones. In fact, this machine is a pioneer in the industry and it was developed by a British company called Bennamann. They have been hard at work researching and developing biomethane production for more than 10 years now.

The waste byproducts that comes from a herd as small as 100 cows can be transformed into a fuel called fugitive methane. This is done in a biometh...

What is the Lukov March and Why Was it Banned in Bulgaria? UNICORN RIOT

As it happens every year, one of the less-known events of the European far-right was scheduled to take place in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The Lukov March, as it is called, was supposed to occur on February 25, 2023, as a memorial demonstration and a tribute to the Bulgarian General and WWII era politician, Hristo Lukov.

This year was symbolic for the organizers of the event, as it marked the twentieth year of the Lukov March, which originally began in 2003. To gain more understanding about Lukov and the march, Unicorn Riot was on the ground in Sofia where we heard from a professor, a nationalist leader and an anti-fascist.

In the period leading up to this years march, the Municipality of Sofia, the Bulgarian government and organizations of the Jewish community succeeded in banning the Lukov March.

Every year there is an attempt from the Municipality of Sofia, the Jewish community and NGOs to get rid of the Lukov March. Every year, except 2020, these attempts were overturned by a court decision and failed, which gave the nationalists the right to demonstrate.

This year, the Sofia City Administrative Court overturned the municipalitys ban but gave the opportunity for an appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court. The latters decision was supposed to be announced on Feb. 20, but was postponed due to procedural reasons and specifically a bureaucratic error made by the Municipality. The Supreme Administrative Court gave the municipality seven days to correct the error, thus the deadline became Feb. 27, two days after the Lukov March was supposed to take place. As a result, the Municipality stated that until the final decision of the Supreme Court is announced, Lukov March is considered banned.

Two days before the event, the General Prosecutor of Bulgaria spoke against the Lukov March, stating it should be banned. As a response, the organizers of Lukov March called for a separate demonstration three hours before the...

Will the Northwest Have Enough Water This Summer and Fall? Cliff Mass Weather Blog

There is been a lot of talk about the huge amount of snow and rain hitting California, where the drought of the previous few years is now clearly over.

But with the bulk of precipitation heading south of the Northwest during the past month or so, where does that leave the Pacific Northwest?    How is our snowpack doing?  Are our reservoirs filling?  Are we in water trouble?

It is time to check this out, particularly as we are moving into the drier Northwest spring.

The bottom line:  Washington State water storage is modestly below normal, with no serious water issues expected.

First, the snowpack.   Oregon snowpack is well above normal and Washington State snowpack is generally near normal, although a bit below normal for the Yakima Basin and the North Cascades.

Precipitation

With the "meteorological hose" heading in California (and after the uber-dry period during fall), the Northwest has been drier than normal.   To illustrate this, below is the percent of normal precipitation during the "water year" starting on October 1.

The Uptown Shiv Freethought Blogs

I got a request for a ghetto shiv and, naturally, it had to happen.

The original design request was for a sort of switchblade icepick something youd push a button on, and an icepick blade would pop out. Theres a big problem with that, which is that front-opening lock knives (OTF) are finicky and not particularly strong. The lock depends on a few small pieces of steel that hold in place with a spring I own a few OTF knives and they are great letter-openers and utility knives but I would not trust them with the impact of a proper stabbing.

Another problem is that something like that is going to attract attention from the wrong sort of people, by which I mean: the police. In many states there are laws on the books that the district attorneys can use to bulk up the charges on a case, to make the offense more severe i.e.: if you get in a fight with someone, youre in trouble, but if you are carrying a concealed dagger (even if you dont use it) theres a felony charge they can drop on top of everything else, to make the defendant more likely to accept a plea bargain. Im going to year-old to carry a loaded AR-15, but criminalize carrying a dagger. After all, daggers dont stab people in the kidneys, people do.

Carrying any kind of nasty knife comes with other problems. Often, I see some of the knives people carry and the sheathes for the knives, or the carrying system in general, scare me. Ive fallen down, before, see, and you dont want to land on 4 of razor blade, especially if its carried anyplace useful under an arm, near the waist, on a thigh because those are not the places you want a loose razor blade scurrying around in. So the solution I like is: hardwood. A good solid block of oak is something that would break if you hammered on it repeatedly, but its going to protect a blade and, more importantly, keep it out of your own arteries, in the event of a normal accident.

That style of sheath is one I developed randomly for a letter opener I did for Richard B., (Yes, I still owe you another one) and its a fun build. Basically, you make a wooden welt that is cut on the bandsaw to hold a blade with a fair chunk of wood left over at the top. The pieces are epoxied together, then drilled from the top down with a forstner bit to make a hole the size of the blades handle. Since we already know that the cut-line is the center where the hole should...

Lets Invade Mexico! tr Never Stops Fred on Everything

In Washington some damned fool Republican, actually Lindsey Graham, R-SC, suggests sending the US Army to Mexico, to fight the drug trade, this to be done with Mexicos permission, which is Washington talk for after buying Mexicos President.Whether this is luminous stupidity or malign intent isnt clear. It is militarily absurd. Why?
First, the population would be united against it. Mexico, like most of the world, has bad memories of invasion by Euro-Americans. Mexico remembers, as historically illiterate gringos do not, losing half of their country to Washington in the Mexican-American war. They remember Pershings incursion, and the shelling of Veracruz. They, like most of the world, do not see America as benign. They fear that their country could be the next Iraq, Syria, Libya,or Afghanistan.
Next, imagine a company of GIs, tricked out in battle gear with all sorts of martial clutter attached to them, in Guadalajara, a huge city. They are conspicuous to say the least. The narcos look exactly like everybody else. What, prithee, do the GIs do to oppose them? Or to find them?Check IDs? Polygraph them?
Spanish-speaking GIs will be regarded as traitors and perhaps targeted by the cartels.
Next, the narcos, armed well, are not pushovers. They are accustomed to fighting the Mexican army. What do the GIs do when snipers begin killing them or ambushing groups? The narcos are good at this. Typically GIs, poorly trained, poorly disciplined, and of low quality to begin with, will start firing wildly, killing bystanders, intensifying hatred and uniting Mexico behind the cartels. The GIs can throw Mexico into chaos, likely the purpose of the thing, but they can do nothing against narcos in the cities.
The countryside? The Sierra Madre mountains, source of and home to many of the narcos, , are steep, heavily forested, with few roads. The narcos know these regions well, and Americans not at all. The villagers will protect the narcos as these often engage in charity in their regions of origin to buy good will. It works. There are musical groups, notably Los Tigres del Norte, famous for ballads lionizing the narcos.
An attempt to use drones against the cartels will result chiefly in killing the wrong people and will arouse fury. What are GIs going to do in such parts?
The deserts of northern Mexico arerocky, as inhospitable as anywhere on earth. Vehicles would be useless. So would infantry.
When the invasion doesnt work, Washington will want to send more troops in its standard mssion creep. More soldiers will require bases, and then more bases. It will be discovered that helicopters are needed, and then fighter-bombers. Welcome to Mexighanistan.
So much for military aspects. But is Washington really concerned with the drug trade? No.
Consider. A (very) major factor in keeping the cartels in business is their...
