What do others think of Evolutionary Psychology? Freethought Blogs

Over there on Reddit, there is a subreddit called r/evolution for the discussion of evolutionary questions and issues. There is now consideration of a rule to clarify their stance on evolutionary psychology. Its a good one.

As you know, the moderator team has been considering the possibility of new rules to help improve things around here. And of course, we wanted to get the communitys feedback on the matter before we pulled the trigger. Please, just remember to voice your disagreements peacefully.

  • Rule #X: Evolutionary Psychology. The moderation team takes the stance that evolutionary psychology is pseudoscience. Like any pseudoscience, it starts with a conclusion rather than drawing that conclusion from data; it also tends to ignore or even demonize other fields of science that already provide information about the topics it addresses; and tends to boil personal behaviors and preferences (as well as complicated sociocultural and developmental phenomena) down to a handful of terms it uses as buzzwords to craft adaptationist/bioessentialist just-so stories that are often untested, untestable, or even wildly incorrect. Its also frequently used to justify everything from preexisting biases all the way to dehumanizing rhetoric. These posts also tend to attract a lot of baseless speculation and experts on these topics are often drowned out by negativity and downvotes, all of which is antithetical to the climate were trying to cultivate.
  • Please note that while we discourage evolutionary psychology and pseudoscience in general, simply asking questions about the evolutionary basis for certain human behaviors or cognitive traits isnt necessarily an issue: there are legitimate scientists in various fields (eg, anthropology, especially evolutionary anthropology, ethnography, behavioral genetics, etc), who study these topics with proper, physical data, and so there is information out there. However, if we feel that a question is better suited for other academics (eg, regular psychologists, historians, sociologists, philosophers, etc), if things start getting pseudoscientific, or if certain lines are crossed, we may choose to intervene.

More pithily, they say the problem is that evolutionary psychology is science in the same way that Taco Bell is authentic Mexican food. There is some polite agreement with the statement (Im not saying anything, because Id only provide loud impolite agreement) a...

Come to Minnesota, one of the few sane states in the country Freethought Blogs

Minnesota is doing the right thing.

Minnesotas Democratic Gov. Tim Walz signed an executive order Wednesday directing state agencies to take action to protect and support access to gender-affirming health care across the state.

All state agencies must, to the fullest extent of their lawful authority, pursue opportunities and coordinate with each other to protect people or entities providing, assisting, seeking or obtaining gender affirming health care services in Minnesota, the order says.

Gender-affirming care is medically necessary, evidence-based care that uses a multidisciplinary approach to help a person transition from their assigned gender the one the person was designated at birth to their affirmed gender the gender by which one wants to be known.

Walzs order comes as Republican-led states around the country push restrictions on such care, with at least four states this year having passed measures to outlaw gender-affirming care for minors. As part of the order, the governor is prohibiting the state from cooperating with investigations by states that aim to penalize such care, saying their actions pose a grave threat to the health of members of the LGBTQ community.

Yeah. Basically, Republican-led states have turned evil and want to actively harm their own citizens, but Minnesota will stand strong as a refuge. Join us!

The Dogmatic Personality: Cognitive, Emotional and Behavioral Dimensions OpEd News

How do you know when you are arguing with a dogmatic personality? Usually they are overly certain they are right. Your discussions are with people who behave as if they're playing King of the Hill games. Their questions are posed in dualistic, either/or way with no middle ground. According to psychologist Judy J. Johnson, dogmatic personalities have fourteen characteristics - five cognitive, four emotional and five behavioral.

Missing Ukrainian girl Rescued From Russian Re-Education Camp WhoWhatWhy

KYIV, Ukraine Tetiana Vlaiko feels like an idiot. She is ashamed to speak to WhoWhatWhy about how the Russians took her 11-year-old daughter Lilia to Russian-occupied Crimea. She says that last October, the teachers at her daughters school in Kherson convinced her to send Lilia to what they called a summer camp.

It turned out to be a Russian re-education facility.

All the mothers at the school signed up. Probably, I could have said no, but the teachers kept saying that all kids are going, it is for free, and she will come back in two weeks, said 36-year-old Vlaiko.

Vlaiko said that she initially thought it would be good for her daughter to get away from Kherson for a short period. At the time, the city was under Russian control, and the Ukrainians were fighting to get the city back. Life there was dangerous. Vlaiko says there were rumors of Russian brutality and rape of people on the streets and a constant risk of shelling.

Crimea was (and still is) also under Russian control, but it was safer than Kherson.

Lilia was supposed to be home on October 21. She didnt show up, and neither did any of her classmates.

I called the teachers when I realized she wasnt returning. I tried to find out what was happening, but they didnt answer, said Vlaiko, who explained that some teachers picked up the phone at the beginning and said they didnt know when or if the kids would return.

She told WhoWhatWhy that the school closed for good after the kids were taken.

At one point in late October, Vlaiko and other parents found the schools director, who told them the kids werent returning. She recalls him saying there was nothing he could do about it and that he was planning to leave Kherson and go to another Russian-controlled area. Vlaiko told WhoWhatWhy that he seemed very pro-Russian.

It became clear that they never intended to send my daughter back. I got crazy hysterical and was full of guilt, said Vlaiko.I should never have told her she could go.

She didnt see her daughter again for almost four months.

The Company Testing Air in East Palestine Homes Was Hired by Norfolk Southern. Experts Say That Testing Isnt Enough. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

Last month, Brenda Foster stood on the railroad tracks at the edge of her yard in East Palestine, Ohio, and watched a smoky inferno billow from the wreckage of a derailed train. The chemicals it was carrying and the fire that consumed them were so toxic that the entire area had to evacuate. Foster packed up her 87-year-old mother, and they fled to stay with relatives.

With a headache, sore throat, burning eyes and a cough, Foster returned home five days later as soon as authorities allowed. So when she saw on TV that there was a hotline for residents with health concerns, she dialed as soon as the number popped up on the screen.

The people who arrived offered to test the air inside her home for free. She was so eager to learn the results, she didnt look closely at the paper they asked her to sign. Within minutes of taking measurements with a hand-held machine, one of them told her they hadnt detected any harmful chemicals. Foster moved her mother back the same day.

What she didnt realize is that the page of test results that put her mind at ease didnt come from the government or an independent watchdog. CTEH, the contractor that provided them, was hired by Norfolk Southern, the operator of the freight train that derailed.

And, according to several independent experts consulted by ProPublica in collaboration with the Guardian, the air testing results did not prove their homes were truly safe. Erin Haynes, a professor of environmental health at the University of Kentucky, said the air tests were inadequate in two ways: They were not designed to detect the full range of dangerous chemicals the derailment may have unleashed, and they did not sample the air long enough to accurately capture the levels of chemicals they were testing for.

Its almost like if you want to find nothing, you run in and run out, Haynes said.

Are Colorados Efforts to Curb HOA Foreclosures Working? Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Last year, when the Colorado legislature passed a bill aimed at protecting residents in disputes with their homeowners associations, lawmakers had one key goal in mind: reducing the number of foreclosures filed by HOAs.

So far, the reform appears to have had its intended effect. An analysis of state court data by Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica shows that HOAs filed 47 foreclosure cases in the nearly six months between Aug. 10, when the law took effect, and the end of January. Thats a significant drop from the same period for the previous four years, when an average of 281 cases per year were filed.

During the 10 weeks between the reform bills signing and its implementation, HOAs appear to have been in a rush to start foreclosure motions, filing 151 cases, compared to an average of 98 cases per year in the same 10-week period for the previous four years.

We see that this is working. Its preventing people from being foreclosed on, and people are being able to stay in their homes, said Rep. Naquetta Ricks, an Aurora Democrat who cosponsored the bill.

But advocates and some lawmakers say more needs to be done to address lingering problems with how HOAs are run in Colorado. For one thing, the drop in foreclosure filings might be only temporary. HOA attorneys told Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica that the drop may be due to HOAs restarting their collection efforts the law requires most HOAs to update their collection policies, provide homeowners with several notifications about delinquencies and offer longer payment plans. Once theyve complied with the new rules, HOAs may decide to restart their foreclosure efforts.

Ricks said she plans to introduce a number of fixes during the current legislative session aimed at undoing some unintended consequences of last years reform bill. She said the changes would primarily be focused on the aspects of the law that dictat...

HOA Foreclosures Are a Lose-Lose Game for Coloradans, but These Lawyers Win Regardless of the Outcome Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Karl Paymah was on the clock.

A certified letter from the Rock Ridge Condominium Association in the Denver suburb of Aurora said he had 30 days to pay $1,515.45 in unpaid homeowners association dues and penalties or face foreclosure.

After receiving the letter on Dec. 23, 2021, Paymah said he tried to pay the balance through the HOAs website, as he had done in the past. But his account had been locked because it was turned over to the HOAs collections attorney, Tammy Alcock. Next, he called Rock Ridges management company, which he said told him to discuss the matter with Alcock. But there was no answer when he called her office three times that afternoon. The office of Alcock Law Group was closed for the holiday.

I cant pay. I cant pay through the portal. I cant pay with the management company. I cant pay with this attorney that theyre telling me to go through, Paymah, a retired NFL cornerback, recalled thinking. So Im just sitting there.

Watch Rocky Mountain PBSs Report (Jeremy Moore/Rocky Mountain PBS)

Turning the account over to Alcock meant that the association was asserting its right under Colorado law to charge him for the attorney fees it was incurring, causing his debt to grow rapidly.

By early February, when Rock Ridge began moving forward with foreclosure, the legal process of taking the home from its owner, Paymahs debt had more than tripled to about $5,000, mostly because of legal costs.

Paymahs experience is a case study in how even a small dispute can quickly escalate into an expensive legal fight in Colorado, where state law empowers HOAs to initiate foreclosure proceedings against homeowners who owe money to them. As Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica have reported,...

After Neo-Nazis Threaten March by Trans Youth, Proud Boys Associate Pulls Gun While Sacramento Police Look On It's Going Down

Over 75 pro-LGBTQ+ and antifascist demonstrators rallied in downtown Sacramento on March 10th, opposing a much smaller anti-trans rally that attracted neo-Nazis and far-Right activists. The anti-trans rally was organized by up and coming conservative star Chloe Cole of nearby Manteca, CA. Cole has become a darling in conservative and far-Right circles, after the 18 year-old announced plans to sue medical giant Kaiser for providing her with gender-confirming female-to-male medical procedures, and has since appeared along-side far-Right anti-trans grifters like Matt Walsh and also addressed the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where Michael Knowles called for transgender people to be eradicated from public life entirely.

Neo-Nazis post online threats against trans march in Sacramento, CA.

In the lead up to the counter-demonstration against the anti-trans rally on March 10th which was called by Pride Was a Riot Sacramento, neo-Nazi groups made multiple threats online against the mobilization, writing, It would be a shame if a group of white nationalists were to show up, one post stated. Another called for their followers to, Bring PPE for pepper spray and monkey pox.

Pride Was a Riot could not take to Twitter to report these violent threats however, as far-Right conspiracy peddler Andy Ngo had gotten them kicked off the platform only hours before, after Ngo complained to Elon Musk that PWAR had posted a photo of a flyer t...

Chat GPT is a blurry jpeg of the web | New Yorker A relatively pessimistic article about Chat GPT that describes it as a copy of the internet, saved with lossy compression.  The author asks, how much use is a blurry jpeg, when you still have the original?  I think this a great starting point to understanding the state of the art chatbots.  The chatbots have strictly less knowledge than what you can find on the internetalbeit in more a form that may be easier to process.  Perhaps the megacorps are right, and the best application is search engines.

The Problem With Masterworks | The Plain Bagel (video, 19 min) If youve ever seen sponsored ads on youtube for Masterworks, an art-based investment scheme, you might have thought it sounded scummy.  Sounds scummy, is scummy, this video gives the scoop on that.  Apparently they skirt through regulation loopholes, which gives them a lot of leeway to report returns in a misleading way.  I actually unsubbed to a channel because they accepted a sponsorship from Masterworks.

Dont Let Them Kill Vio.Me. Decade-Long Greek Factory Occupation Threatened UNICORN RIOT

Thessaloniki, Greece In a surprise announcement on Feb. 3, the workers of the reclaimed worker-run factory of Vio.ME. in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, disclosed that the land on which the factory stands has quietly been sold at an online auction. The buyer is Acsion Limited, a South Africa-based company owned by Greek expatriate Kiriakos Anastasiadis. The workers of the collectivized factory made it clear that they would not leave without a fight, and called for solidarity actions and support.

The land on which the factory resides is owned by Filkeram-Johnson, Greeces first ceramic tile manufacturing plant which has owed money to the government, private individuals, and its workers since 2011. State-run auctions of the land Vio.Me. resides on have taken place since Nov. 2015. Courtrooms have been continually packed by Vio.Me. workers and community members ready to physically block any sale on the space, had it occurred. More recently, the auctions have been held on state-run electronic platforms such was the case with the recent sale of the land on Feb. 1, 2023.

During a large solidarity march in Thessaloniki on Feb. 11, Makis Anagnostou, one of the original workers of the occupation, told Unicorn Riot that the workers have declared they will not leave the place unless [they] are tied up or lying down.

After the sale of the Filkeram site in a devious way, because it has been done completely in secret through the electronic auctions, we have decided not to surrender, not to give up the spaces occupied by Vio.Me. many of which have been opened to society and we will defend this decision to the end.

Makis Anagnostou, worker at Vio.Me. since before the occupation in 2013

Short-term and Long-term: Democratic Governor Makes Minnesota a Sanctuary for Trans People Freethought Blogs

I am, in general, pretty cynical about the U.S. electoral system. Its designed to empower conservatism, and has been shaped to make change that benefits the working class nearly impossible. Yes, there are victories, but every single one has come as a result of decades of grueling and dangerous work by the people who most need that change. The Republicans want the U.S. to be a fascist, white supremacist state, in which the power of capitalists the aristocracy is unchallengeable, as long as they support the fascist agenda. The Democrats, or at least their leadership, still seem to want the world to be held in stasis in the mid 1990s, but will go along with social change when someone else does the work.

Thats not exactly a difficult choice to make, but neither is it a pleasant one. When it comes to foreign policy and the military-industrial complex, the two parties are virtually indistinguishable, though the Dems are, on rare occasions, a bit less hawkish. Biden wont try to hunt down and murder trans people, but hell continue working to undermine any alternatives to capitalism, and to prevent things like universal healthcare.

In a lot of ways, at least to someone who pays attention, workers have become alienated from politics in a manner similar to how theyve been alienated from their labor. Its something that affects our lives on a daily basis, but we have very little say in how it goes. In both cases, getting change that helps us, and not just the capitalist class, requires us to work together outside of a system that very much does not want us to do that.

Its frustrating, and for those working to make things better, its often exhausting. I can easily understand why so many people often try to avoid thinking about it. We can have massive demonstrations to change policing, and after paying a bit of lip service, the Democrats go ahead with giving cops more money, while the GOP accuses them of defunding something they have neither the courage, nor the desire to do and howls for more violence from police

Thats why I advocate for systemic change, outside of electoral politics. Our system does change, but it does so slowly, and at great cost. The decades it took to ban leaded gasoline, or to end segregation, or to get gay rights, or to get trans rights people died during those delays, because of those delays. P...

Bidens budget proposals puts Republicans in a bind Freethought Blogs

Yesterday Joe Biden released his budget proposals for the next fiscal year. In the ritualistic role-playing that is the annual budget process in the US, a presidents proposals are taken seriously as likely to be implemented only if the presidents party controls both houses of Congress. Otherwise, the opposition party that is the majority will dismiss the proposals outright. Those are the usual opening moves in this dance and it is being followed this time with Republican speaker Kevin McCarthy and others in his partys leadership dismissing the budget.

In a joint statement, House speaker Kevin McCarthy and other top Republicans accused Biden of shrugging and ignoring the national debt, which they called one of the greatest threats to America.

President Bidens budget is a reckless proposal doubling down on the same far-left spending policies that have led to record inflation and our current debt crisis, the statement said.

McCarthys statement looked like it might have been written well in advance since he accuses the Biden budget of ignoring the national debt when in fact Biden argues that his budget will lower it by $2.9 trillion over the next ten years. The precise numbers are always subject to debate but it is incorrect that Biden is ignoring it when it is the top line item.

That does not mean that this is a wasted exercise. The presidents proposals should be viewed as more like a campaign platform, especially so since next year will be a presidential election year. Progressives have reserved their criticisms mostly to the absurdly high military allocation while generally praising the budget,

Biden advocates for $59 billion in funding and tax incentives to increase the affordable housing supply; $10 billion to remove barriers to affordable housing developments; and $10 billion to address racial and ethnic homeownership and wealth gaps. The president proposes providing $4.1 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programand allowing states to use some of that money to provide water bill assistance to poor households, since a related program expires at the end of 2023.

Along with fighting for billions of dollars to ease hunger, the administration aims to pour money into high-poverty school districts as well as improve the affordability of higher education by increasing the discretionary maximum Pell Grant by $500, expanding free community college, and subsidizing tuition for students from families earning less than $125,000 enrolled historically Black, tribally controlled, or minority-serving...

What is in Oregon's Radar Gap? Cliff Mass Weather Blog

As I have noted on several occasions, Oregon has some of the worst weather radar coverage in the nation, with a huge radar gap off its central and southern coast and another in eastern Oregon

Important weather features approaching the coast can be missed, reducing the skill of short-term forecasts from western Oregon into western Washington.   Perhaps including the missed Portland snowstorm of February 22.

Below is a National Weather Service radar coverage map,  with yellow indicating the regions of low-level coverage (coverage below 3000 ft above ground level).  The coverage would be much worse near sea level.  Western Washington and the Washington coast have good coverage thanks to the Langley Hill radar (Hoquiam), the Camano Island radar north of Seattle, and the Portland radar.

But most of the Oregon Coast has no coverage.  The Portland radar is blocked by the coastal mountains at low levels and the Medford radar is poorly placed, positioned so high (7500 ft) that the radar beam reaches the coast at 13000 ft and is even higher offshore.

Eastern Oregon is a radar disaster, with no coverage for vast areas.

So what are we missing with such poor radar coverage?  What would we see if a radar was there?

I think I can tell you, using our regional high-resolution forecasting system.

Believe it or not, we can simulate what a radar image would be like using the 3-D precipi...

What ProPublica Is Doing About Diversity in 2023 Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

ProPublica is committed to increasing the diversity of our workplace as well as the journalism community more broadly, and each year we publish a report on those efforts. This is the report for 2023; here are all our past reports.

Our Commitment

We believe that it is imperative to staff our newsroom and business operations with people from a broad range of backgrounds, ages and perspectives. We are committed to recruiting and retaining people from communities that have long been underrepresented, in journalism broadly and in investigative journalism especially. That includes African Americans, Latinos, other people of color, women, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

ProPublica has continued to expand, growing from 160 full-time employees at the start of 2022 to 172 in 2023, due in part to the launch of our global public health team and additions to our visuals, audience, development, finance and talent teams. In addition to recruiting talent and awarding financial stipends for students to attend journalism conferences, ProPublicas diversity efforts last year included our largest presence yet at journalism affinity conferences and the development of an investigative editor training program.

We also worked to formalize some of our previously volunteer-run diversity efforts and have included some of our broader diversity goals in ProPublicas first strategic plan.

The Diversity Committee comprises more than 50 ProPublicans who volunteer their time to work on initiatives that are pitched and run by the staff. The current co-chairs are Vianna Davila, Melissa Sanchez and Liz Sharp.

Glinner evokes the mob! Freethought Blogs

Oh no! Graham Linehan mentions me again!

He gets everything wrong again. Im not practicing mob-friendly pseudoscience the kind of stuff I do doesnt find favor with pseudoscientists or mobs. Rather, Glinner leads a hate-mob himself, and if anyone is going to get mobbed today, its me, descended upon by the anti-trans loons endemic to the UK. So far, it hasnt happened maybe Linehan is losing his social potency? Or maybe the fact that the article is not great, and is published in a magazine for conservative twits?

Hes highlighting an exercise in pedantry published in some magazine called The Critic. I never heard of it before, so I looked it up on Wikipedia.

The Critic is a monthly British political and cultural magazine. Contributors include David Starkey, Joshua Rozenberg, Peter Hitchens and Toby Young.

The magazine was founded in November 2019, with Michael Mosbacher, former editor of Standpoint, and Christopher Montgomery, a strategist with the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tory MPs, as co-editors. It was funded by Jeremy Hosking, a Conservative party donor who had previously donated to Standpoint.

Im not familiar with many UK political figures, but Ive heard of Peter Hitchens (vapid gasbag) and Toby Young (eugenics cheerleader and generally awful human being), so Ive already got a sense of the flavor of the magazine. I think I dont need to read further.

I did check out the recommended great piece though. Its familiar stuff; its the same Twitter nonsense I criticized before. He has two points that he babbles about. One is that Im breeding spiders, therefore I know deep-down that sex is real.

Recently, Myers has started breeding spiders, a project which he is documenting in great detail on twitter. What I found intriguing is that in his spider updates, any uncertainty about the reality of sex or how many sexes there are, seems to be forgotten. When he charted the growth of his arachnoid pets, he used two colours: yellow for spider-girls and blue for spider-boys with no need for intermediate hues. His blog is full of references to his female spiders producing eggs never the males, whose function is to provide the sperm ideally without getting eaten b...

New Mexico Has Lost Track of Juveniles Locked Up for Life. We Found Nearly Two Dozen. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

The New Mexico Corrections Department has lost track of nearly two dozen prisoners in its custody who are serving life sentences for crimes they committed as children, an error that could keep these juvenile lifers from getting a chance at freedom under a bill likely to be passed by the state Legislature within days.

As the legislation was being drafted, ProPublica asked the department for a list of all state prisoners who were sentenced to life as juveniles. Using court records, the news organization then identified at least 21 such individuals not on the states list. Many of them had been locked up for decades.

Denali Wilson, a staff attorney at the ACLU of New Mexico who helped discover the problem, said such carelessness on the part of the state government makes it plain that when you throw away kids in adult prison, they are lost.

Or as one of the forgotten prisoners, Sigmundr Odhinnson, told ProPublica in an email from behind bars, We are, quite literally, missing children.

This is not just a philosophical issue. The New Mexico Legislature is on the cusp of passing a bill that would give a new shot at parole to all state prisoners serving life or lengthy sentences for crimes they committed when they were juveniles, provided that they have served at least 15 to 25 years of their time, depending on their offense.

But to do that, the corrections department will first need to identify all of these individuals to help schedule their parole hearings.

When the entity that is imprisoning people isnt a reliable source for who it is imprisoning, how do we know the people exist? said Wilson.

Wilson started advocating for juveniles serving decadeslong sentences in adult prison when she was still i...

woke Freethought Blogs

The most useful thing about the word woke is that it allows me to instantly recognize the lying idiots. All these conservatives complaining about wokeismits like theyve tattooed LOSER on their foreheads, and theyre proud of it.

Ron Desantis, of all people, gave the game away when his lawyers had to explicitly define woke, and this is what they came up with.

Asked what woke means more generally, [Desantis General Counsel Ryan] Newman said it would be the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.

Newman added that DeSantis doesnt believe there are systemic injustices in the U.S.

Thats a fine definition, and that Desantis doesnt believe there are systemic injustices in the U.S. confirms my opinion that those who use the word disparagingly are all lying idiots.

I am surprised and reassured to learn that Im not some weird outlier in this, as well: in one poll, a majority agree that woke is not an insult.

Republican presidential hopefuls are vowing to wage a war on woke, but a new USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll finds a majority of Americans are inclined to see the word as a positive attribute, not a negative one.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed say the term means to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices. That includes not only three-fourths of Democrats but also more than a third of Republicans.

Overall, 39% say instead that the word reflects what has become the GOP political definition, to be overly politically correct and police others words. Thats the view of 56% of Republicans.

I disagree that its a mistake for Republicans to abuse the term, since a majority of them think its a synonym for politically correct. Its a rallying cry used to gather all the lying idiots under the banner of whatever yahoo is running for office, and in that sense its effective, as long as you dont mind using language dishonestly and misrepresenting what people actually think.

I find it a handy flag to recognize that someone doesnt believe systemic injustices exist, and that they sure dont feel any need to oppose injustice, because they think everything is hunky dory, and we should just maintain the status quo. It certainly has made it fast and easy to spot bad people to block on social media.

But here, Ive got a video from Cody Johnston that explains the whole absurd, horrible situation at length, almost an hour of length. Its an entertai...

Why Christopher Hitchens Matters Now WhoWhatWhy

Christopher Hitchens was an ardent defender of free speech, as well as a champion of universal liberal values. Drawing inspiration from George Orwells commitment to truth and free expression, Hitchens believed in the enduring power of Enlightenment values and was an avowed internationalist.

In this weeks WhoWhatWhy podcast, journalist Matt Johnson discusses his new book, How Hitchens Can Save the Left, which argues that Hitchenss legacy has been unfairly maligned by some on the far Left due to his support for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to Johnson, Hitchens believed that free speech, individual rights, and other fundamental liberal values were under threat across the democratic world. Additionally, according to Johnson, Hitchens saw the rise of identity politics and the perception that liberal democracies are institutionally racist, exploitative, and imperialistic, which led some on the Left to abandon the universalist principles that underpinned liberalism from its inception.

Johnson argues that Hitchenss message of universal Enlightenment principles is more important than ever and could help save liberalism from its current malaise. By embracing Hitchenss legacy, Johnson contends that the Left can avoid the pitfalls of identity politics and return to its roots as a defender of individual rights and freedoms.

Channeling Hitchens, Johnson describes how liberals can resist the emerging orthodoxies on both the Left and the Right, and reconstruct a liberalism that is true to its foundational principles.

Officials Move to Address Problems Facing Immigrant Workers on Wisconsin Dairy Farms Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

State and local officials in Wisconsin said they were horrified to learn of the conditions leading up to the 2019 death of an 8-year-old Nicaraguan boy on a dairy farm, as well as the flawed law enforcement investigation that followed. Now they say they want to address some of the issues highlighted by a ProPublica investigation, published last month, into Jefferson Rodrguezs death.

What happened should never have happened, said state Rep. Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, a Milwaukee Democrat whose mothers family worked as migrant farm laborers in Wisconsin in the 1960s.

Jefferson was run over late one summer night in 2019 by a worker operating a skid steer on a farm in rural Dane County, about a half-hour north of Madison, the state capital. It was the workers first day on the job, and he told us that he had received only a few hours of training. Our investigation showed how the authorities who investigated Jeffersons death wrongly concluded that his father had run him over.

The failure was due in large part to a language barrier between the boys father, Jos Mara Rodrguez Uriarte, and the Dane County sheriffs deputy who interviewed him. Rodrguez does not speak English; the deputy considered herself proficient in Spanish, but not fluent. When we interviewed the deputy, we learned that when she questioned Rodrguez in Spanish about what happened, her words didnt mean what she thought and would likely be confusing to a Spanish speaker.

Jeffersons death was ruled an accident. Nobody was charged criminally.

Proficiency in a crisis isnt good enough, said Dana Pellebon, who sits on the Dane County Board of Supervisors. Unfortunately, until a situation like this happens, sometimes we dont see the gaps in service.

Pellebon and several other supervisors told ProPublica they were looking into mea...

Washington State Bill Would Reduce Low-Level Traffic Stops Strong Towns Media

A new bill in Washington state would reduce traffic stops for low-level violations. State Bill 1513, currently in committee in the state House, would raise the threshold for a traffic stop to vehicular problems in which an equipment failure on the vehicle may cause immediate, serious injury to the operator or other persons in the vicinity of the vehicle. This would eliminate stops for such infractions as missing one tail light, and reduce law enforcement encounters in situations that have proven dangerous for drivers, passengers and police.

The bill also sets requirements for law enforcement to document the primary reason for any traffic enforcement (e.g. if it was in response to a citizens call), whether searches were conducted and if property was seized.

If enacted, the law would be similar to a Virginia statute passed in 2020 that bans traffic stops for minor offenses such as tinted windows or no license-plate light. The Virginia law says that evidence collected in such a stop will be invalid in court. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Francisco have recently passed similar laws

The legislation comes against a backdrop of high-profile deadly encounters between motorists and law enforcement across the United States. Washington State Representative Chipalo Street, who sponsored the bill in the House, puts the focus primarily on traffic safety: There is clear correlation between what we ask our police to enforce and the safety related outcomes.

A Startup Company In Kenya Will Generate Energy By Capturing CO2 And Putting It In Volcanic Rock True Activist

Good News Network

In a far-flung area in northern Kenya, a startup company will grow minerals by gathering CO2 from the air and storing it at least 1,300 feet beneath the ground, placing it in volcanic rocks. Then, theyll allow nature to take its course by turning them into stone via greenhouse gas.

These otherwise incredibly fertile grasslands of Tsavo or Amboseli national parks is considered quite barren, precisely due to its volcanic history. And this process of placing CO2 into basalt rock, which has been successfully used in Iceland, is something new to the African country, but the hope is that they will be just as fruitful.

The company, called Cella Mineral Storage, will partner with Kenyas growing geothermal energy sector to provide this zero-emission permanent carbon sequestration solution. The hope is to place a facility that sucks CO2 from the air and place it underground, where the geothermal plant is drilling to produce electricity.

Africa admits to being one of the continents that is one of the last in line when it comes to being a climate-neutral continent, mostly due to having weak access to electricity and unreliable grids.

Identifying the Real Resistance to Rule by the Rich WhoWhatWhy

Id like to put three things before you and let you consider what they mean.

The Failed Revolution of 2016

The first is something I wrote, presciently I think, in 2017, after the Trump election had advanced beyond shock, and before the liberal response was cemented in. The piece, The Resistance, the #Resistance and Harvey Weinstein, said in part:

All this has led me to wonder what the goal of this professional #Resistance really is. The Restoration of Democracy to America? Or the Restoration of Mainstream Democrats the anti-Sanders, anti-progressive, you cant have that crowd to power again?

If just the latter, the nation may sink more slowly beneath the neoliberal waves than it would under solid Republican rule. But progressives will still have an enemy armed, enabled and in the field against them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mObfi1Y5Rmo&t=38s

The real Resistance, of course, occurred in 2016, in that years electoral revolt against the money-bought in both parties, and it failed in both parties. Mainstream Democrats successfully fended off the actual populist in their race, Bernie Sanders, whom they hate even to this day. Mainstream Republicans successfully elected their populist, the fake swamp-drainer Donald Trump, and his voters are getting nothing they wanted in terms of relief from the relentless greed and austerity they rebelled against.

The nation, meanwhile, is left with a still-unsatisfied populist anger, waiting like an abscess to erupt. What form that will take in 2018 and 2020 is anyones guess. Failed revolutions, like bad meals, often come back stronger.

It closes:

Is its behind-the-scenes security state actors, simply setting us up for a Restoration of those a Pence, a Biden who weep tears of admiration for their own virtue as they tank or attempt to co-opt the next Bernie Sanders, or re-destroy the last one? And if they do, will America weep tears of thanks, or something else?

Healthcare As Punishment: Seeking Medical Care In Washington Prisons Shadowproof

This article was funded by the Marvel Cooke Fellowship. Read more about this reporting project and make a contribution to fund our fellowship budget.

About one year after the COVID-19 pandemic hit Washington State prisons, sick prisoners at Stafford Creek Correctional Center found themselves huddled into the gym to isolate from the rest of the population.

The events that took place in that gym, organized by medical and corrections staff, provide a window into medical care in a carceral environment.

A couple of weeks ago, I had got diagnosed with COVID, Robert Hampton recounted from a prison phone in June 2022. Now when I first got diagnosed, I didnt believe I had COVID. I was telling everyone like, yo, I dont got COVID, theyre tripping. But then they put us in the gym.

We get to the gym and you got all these people up in there, and theyre coughing, just hacking up and everything. And the next day I found out I did have COVID, and I could barely walk and whatnot.

Hampton recovered in the gym, but soon more people arrived. He realized prison officials were mixing people from different housing unitsraising the risk of transmitting infection between buildings in the midst of an outbreak of a highly contagious airborne virus.

As I started getting well, they started bringing other people in, Hampton explained. They bring in a couple of brothers and I know that theyre from a different unit. Were all hanging out. Were making prayers and everything together.

And then one night, they come in there about nine oclock and they turn the field lights off, he said. This was a surprise because typically the lights were turned off around 11pm.

Im just thinking like damn what the hell they doing? Then [staff] go over to one of my brosactually they went to two of thembut they went to one of my bros. He came and told me before he left.

He came up and said, Rob, man, theyre moving me over. They said I got [tuberculosis].

This was the start of a massive and deadly tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at Stafford Creek, which would continue for months and eventually see the WADOC fined $84,400 for reportedly failing to follow safety rules meant to stop the spread of disease at the prison.

Hes been in here with us for three days. Were not even wearing a mask in there, you knowwe all got COVID so were not wearing a mask in therebut hes been there with us for three days. And then he comes and tells me on his way out the door that theyre moving them guys out and that he has TB.

This one hits hard Freethought Blogs

TW: Suicide

I have been laid low with laryngitis, so I have spent some time surfing the internet, and I came across a new music video from Linkin Park. It is not a new song, rather it is 20 years old, but it has not been released before now, and it hits hard, because of what has happened in those twenty years.

This is a song where you can feel the pain of Chester Bennington, who committed suicide in July 2017, just two months after the suicide of his friend Chris Cornell. It is like hearing the voice of a ghost, but from when he was alive, sharing his anguish with the world.

RIP Chester.

If you want to revisit the life and death of Chester Bennington, I think this Rolling Stones article is pretty good.

Newly Discovered Enzyme Turns Air Into Electricity, Providing Clean Source of Energy (Maria)

The author writes, Australian scientists have discovered an enzyme that converts air into energy. The finding, published [yesterday] in the journal Nature, reveals that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current. This finding opens the way to create devices that literally make energy from thin air. The research team, led by Dr. Rhys Grinter, Ph.D. student Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening from the Monash University Biomedicine Discovery Institute in Melbourne, Australia, produced and analyzed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium.

Trumps Threat of a Third-Party Run Is Undercut by Sore Loser Laws (Reader Steve)

The author writes, Donald Trump hates losing so much that he has suggested he will mount a third-party campaign if he doesnt win the Republican presidential nomination. But he cant win that way either, thanks to sore loser laws in six states he would need to return to the White House. Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, as well as Arkansas and Alabama, have laws that bar a candidate defeated in a major-party primary from running as an independent or on a third-party ticket in the general election. That would put Trump at the general-election starting gate with a deficit of 91 electoral votes of the 270 required to capture the White House.

The DEEMONS rose up in him and made him say those stupid evil things Freethought Blogs

When you wind Michael Knowles up and let him babble, he says some pretty wild things. The transgenders must be eradicated. AI is possessed by demons. That sort of thing.

So thats this ladys explanation. A pretty weird situation, isnt it? Because AI is supposed to work where you plug in the inputs and then that sets the tone for the program and then you get the output based on what you put in. And yet the output that she got was the opposite of what she put it. So were in a good, stable, loving relationship. Within 11 messages, the AI bot says, yeah, Ive been cheating on you, youre furious, you had to leave me briefly and goes really south. Her explanation is, well, I guess the bot was just scanning the internet and what do you know? Kind of, somehow, Im not quite sure how, thats what came out.

My alternative explanation hear me out is what if it is demons? I dont want to sound like the guy on the History Channel, you know, who says that everything is because of aliens. But and I dont think everything is because of demons, but, like, some things are. And youre hear me out. This is why I think, maybe, Im just suggesting. Im not saying this is what it is is if you believe that there is evil in the world. I think you have to believe that, right? Everybody believes there is evil in the world. Okay. The question is, is evil personal or impersonal? Is it an impersonal force or is it a personal force?

People who blame bad things on supernatural beings for which they have no evidence are disqualified from ever being treated seriously ever again.

Alternatively, has Michael Knowles considered that maybe he is possessed by one of his demons?

The Dishonest Accounting of Net-Zero Emissions WhoWhatWhy

What the hell is net zero anyway?

Zero is an elegant word, the last word in a descending line down a scale from something to nothing.

And so, among our nations biggest greenhouse gas emitters, its getting popular. ExxonMobil claims itll be heading there by 2050. So do Shell and Chevron (its in their links). Some 400 other signatories, including some of the worlds biggest companies outside the fossil fuel industry, have agreed publicly to a so-called Climate Pledge, sponsored by the king of overnight delivery Jeff Bezos, to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. A bandwagon is forming. Heading where?

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres watched such claims falling like droplets from an atmospheric river at the climate negotiations last year and cautioned journalists to be wary of net-zero commitments [that] have varying degrees of rigor and loopholes wide enough to drive a diesel truck through. We must have zero tolerance for net-zero greenwashing. A UN report called out many net zero pledges as what it terms dishonest climate accounting.

But the press has too often given companies a free ride when it comes to their claims to be heading toward net zero. Even the worlds most prominent gathering of financial elites at the World Economic Forum the ones who meet each year in the snowy ski chalets of Davos, Switzerland cautioned against greenwashing by companies maneuvering for position in a suddenly climate-awakened world, and placed net zero at the top of their list of possibly misleading claims. Several regulatory agencies in this country and abroad have begun...

US Still Trying To Bury Collateral Murder Video That WikiLeaks Released Shadowproof

This article was funded by paid subscribers of The Dissenter Newsletter, a project of Shadowproof. Become a monthly paid subscriber to help us publish more independent journalism on whistleblowing.

To further their nationwide efforts to restrict access to transgender health care, Republicans in the state of Missouri have deployed a former case worker at Washington Universitys Transgender Center at St. Louis Childrens Hospital, who they claim is a whistleblower.

There is no shortage of activists, journalists, academics, and people of conscience who have some story to share about the impact of the Collateral Murder video.

The U.S. military footage of an Apache helicopter crew shooting indiscriminately at a dozen Iraqi civilians including Reuters journalists Namir Noor Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh, and two young children is widely recognized for exposing the true nature of the United States war in Iraq and for making WikiLeaks and Julian Assange household names.

Three years before WikiLeaks made it possible for the public to watch this video, Dean Yates, Reuters bureau chief in Iraq, learned of its existence. Yates testified about the impact of the video at the Belmarsh Tribunal in Sydney, Australia on March 4, 2023.

Later in the Tribunal, another delegate, Australian lawyer Bernard Collaery, called Yates testimony admissible evidence, which could serve as witness testimony in defense of Assange. (In fact, a statement from Yates was submitted to a British court during Assanges extradition trial.)

It has now been nearly 13 years since WikiLeaks published the video, and nearly 16 years since the attack took place. No one responsible for the attack or the invasion of Iraq has faced even a modicum of accountability.

In contrast, Assange is languishing in Belmarsh Prison under torturous conditions. He sits in legal limbo while the United States continues to pursue his extradition under Espionage Act charges, in a case which poses an unprecedented threat to press freedom.

While WikiLeaks publication of military documents from Iraq and Afghanistan are at the heart of the case, the Collateral Murder video is absent from the 18-count indictment that spans 37 pages.

The U.S. military usually didnt investigate civilian casualties in Iraq. It did in this case because Namir and Saeed worked for a major international news organization, Yates said as he started his speech.

Reducing the cost of insulin is big news Freethought Blogs

An estimated 26.9 million people of all ages (8.2% of the U.S. population) have been diagnosed with diabetes. A further 7.3 million adults ages 18 years or older (21.4 percent of adults) are estimated to have diabetes but are undiagnosed. For people with diabetes, insulin is essential for them to live but in the US, insulin prices have been much higher than elsewhere in the world resulting in crippling costs for users, so much so that some people cannot afford to buy the drug.

One of the major achievements of Democrats and the Biden administration in passing the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) at the end of last year was that it allowed Medicare to negotiate down the price of insulin for those over 65.

Effective January 1, 2023, out-of-pocket costs for insulin are capped at $35 per monthly prescription among Medicare Part D enrollees under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). A similar cap takes effect in Medicare Part B on July 1, 2023. An estimated 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries who use insulin would have saved $734 million in Part D and $27 million in Part B if these caps had been in effect in 2020.

Thanks to the pressure exerted on prices by that move, one of the major manufacturers of the drug has announced that they will reduce the price of the drug for everyone.

High insulin prices have not earned any U.S. manufacturer many friends, with list prices increasing 54% from 2014 to 2019.

Most troublingly, an estimated 1.3 million uninsured people with diabetes and patients with inadequate insurance have resorted to rationing their insulin. Skipping doses because of high insulin prices has sometimes had tragic and even deadly consequences.

Part of the problem with the existing system is that some patients, especially if theyre uninsured or have high deductibles, end up paying the list price which can mean spending $1,000 or more a month on insulin. This can be a crushing financial burden.

Lillys new $35 out-of-pocket cap means that privately insured patients and those without insurance requiring insulin will spend no more than that monthly for copays. Its 70% reduction in the list price of two popular name brand insulins, Humalog and Humulin, will bring some financial relief. And the company has also reduced its generic lispros list price to $25 a vial, down from $126.

Lilly has put pressure on its biggest competitors, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi, to follow suit.

These lower prices could also make Lillys insulins affordable to cash-paying patients. As a result, these...

Important Video: Gender Criticals & Autism Freethought Blogs

Im not sure where I first encountered the despicable practice of using autistic people as a political weapon, but it was probably the anti-vax movement. Some time after that, I learned why so many autistic people hate the organization Autism Speaks, and not long after that, I started to become more aware of how our society systematically fails, abuses, and kills people with all sorts of disabilities and neurotypes. In recent years, the reactionary Gender Critical movement has been using the bigoted notion that autistic people dont know themselves or their own experiences, to attack trans people. Its something that requires dismissing what autistic trans people have to say, often while claiming that those same people dont have a voice, and so need some Rowling-style feminist to speak for them.

Mica of the Youtube channel Ponderful does an excellent job dismantling this bullshit, and giving her perspective as an autistic cis woman of the sort that the transphobes claim to speak for. Fair warning, this video does get a bit dark, as it goes into topics such as the frequency with which disabled people are murdered by their parents and other caregivers, and abusive treatments for autism. Its an informative video, and it closes out with comments from autistic trans people, because it turns out that they actually do know their own minds, and they have voices with which to speak for themselves.

Rushdie Has Survived. Will Freedom of Speech? WhoWhatWhy

The last time I stole a book was from the Housing Works Bookstore Caf in downtown New York, about 18 years ago.

The person I stole it for was Salman Rushdie.

The book was my own Satanic Nurses, a collection of literary parodies that included one of his own style, and since I didnt have a copy on me, I pinched the volume off the stores shelves and presented it to the bemused author, who had unexpectedly turned up in one of my favorite New York haunts.

We had our picture snapped together, a gravelly photograph that looks like it was taken on a box camera made out of sandpaper. I had the vague idea that this image released to the press would somehow spike sales of my work, but my publisher was more sanguine about it, and was proved right.

But Rushdie was a good sport about the whole thing, and he looks happy enough in the picture to have been buttonholed by a fan who had satirized him in print along with the likes of Norman Mailer, J.D. Salinger, Virginia Woolf, and P.G. Wodehouse (good company).

There has always been something courtly and slightly noblesse oblige about Rushdie, an early proponent of humblebrag. Hes known his worth for a long time now, as well as being constantly aware of his dangerous situation. The stress of living under a perpetual death threat tends to focus the mind.

Inside the Private and Confidential Conservative Group That Promises to Crush Liberal Dominance Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

A few months ago, Leonard Leo laid out his next audacious project.

Ever since the longtime Federalist Society leader helped create a conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court, and then received more than a billion dollars from a wealthy Chicago business owner to disburse to conservative causes, Leos next moves had been the subject of speculation.

Now, Leo declared in a slick but private video to potential donors, he planned to crush liberal dominance across American life. The country was plagued by woke-ism in corporations and education, one-sided journalism and entertainment thats really corrupting our youth, said Leo amid snippets of cheery music and shots of sunsets and American flags.

Sitting tucked into a couch, with wire-rimmed glasses and hair gone to gray, Leo conveyed his inspiration and intentions: I just said to myself, Well, if this can work for law, why cant it work for lots of other areas of American culture and American life where things are really messed up right now?

Leo revealed his latest battle plan in the previously unreported video for the Teneo Network, a little-known group he called a tremendously important resource for the future of our country.

Teneo is building what Leo called in the video networks of conservatives that can roll back liberal influence in Wall Street and Silicon Valley, among authors and academics, with pro athletes and Hollywood producers. A Federalist Society for everything.

Despite its linchpin role in Leos plans, Teneo (which is not the similarly named consulting firm associated with former officials in the Bill Clinton administration) has kept a low public profile. Its one-page website includes bland slogans T...

Detroit Considers Changing its Property Tax System to No Longer Punish Investments Strong Towns Media

A vacant home in Detroit. (Photo by Daniel Tuttle)

Under the duress of blight, Detroit is studying a solution that might curb the raging decline of the city: a split-rate tax, where land will be taxed higher than the buildings or improvements made on it.

Detroit has been referred to as a lost city, a place whose early embrace of auto-centric development undermined the resiliency of the city in the face of the multiple crises that befell it in the late 20th century, tearing down social, political, and financial strength that had once made Detroit a great place to be. Now, its a place where many property owners sit on vacant or poorly maintained property. With property tax rates among the highest in the country for commercial buildings and apartments, allowing a property to fall into decline can be a rational strategy for landlords to save on their taxes, according to Strong Towns President Charles Marohn.

Tax policy plays an important role in creating the incentives that make it profitable to sit on a property that is a source of blight. When a city taxes improvements made on buildings, or new constructions on a property, its not creating an incentive for people to invest in the community. And...

How Obamacare Enabled a Multibillion-Dollar Christian Health Care Cash Grab Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

Joe Guarino rescued an entire industry with help from what some called divine intervention.

A little-known lobbyist from Virginia, Guarino was hired in 2007 by the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries, the trade association for nonprofit alternatives to medical insurance founded on Christian principles. Health care sharing ministries take fees from members, which are then used to pay other members health bills.

At the time, the industry had been tainted by a scandal involving one of the largest ministries in the country, the Christian Brotherhood Newsletter, based outside Canton, Ohio. State authorities won $14 million in civil judgments against two of its top leaders for enriching themselves instead of paying the medical bills of its members. A ProPublica investigation last month revealed that many of the Brotherhoods executives, including Daniel J. Beers, were involved years later in the launch of a second scandal-plagued ministry, Liberty HealthShare.

The Washington-based alliance was looking to Guarino to repair the industrys reputation and pass laws to fend off a looming movement to regulate the business. The lobbying effort is an example of how the ministries have quietly worked over the years to shield themselves from consumer protection laws and preempt government oversight.

Guarino decided to launch a state-by-state campaign to pass so-called safe harbor laws that exempt health care sharing ministries from insurance regulation. The carve-outs were justified, the alliance argued, because ministries dont set prices and coverage based on risk calculations or pool peoples money, as insurance companies do. In the United States, many of the rules for health insurance are set by the states in which companies operate.

Guarino met with lawmakers in Virginia, Arkansas and Idaho. Most of the time I was hiring local lobbyis...

Are Childproof Container Caps Worth the Price? Freethought Blogs

We have 6 still functioning soap dispensers in a cupboard and we refill the three that we use.  Although the refill packages sold in supermarkets around here cost about the same as soap with a new dispenser. And they are only twice as big as a dispenser anyway, so not many people buy them. Thus, supermarkets do not have them in stock sometimes. They do have the dispensers though, all the time, full shelves. Luckily my mother found an online shop that sells big 5 l canisters of liquid soap which lasts us a year and we can reduce the amount of plastic we use by an infinitesimal amount. And since I cut myself at work rather badly yesterday, all I can do is think and I went down a rabbit hole of thought that I shall elaborate on now in this post a bit.

On each supermarket shelf around here, one can see several different spray bottles of window cleaners of multiple shapes and sizes, although with just a few discrete volumes. The same goes for soap dispensers, disinfectants, antifungals, toilet cleaners, etc. Each brand that sells 0,5 l or 1 l of some liquid has its own unique bottle shape, its own unique plastic wrap around it, and its own unique cap. And sometimes those caps are made in a way that allegedly prevents children from accidentally opening them but in reality, give more grief to people with a hand injury like me right now or to elderly people with arthritis like my mother than to any child old enough to reach an upper shelf in the bathroom.

Those safety lids are a special pet peeve of mine. I was cleaning the shower the other day and I wanted to rinse the bottle of disinfectant before tossing it. And I found again what I have forgotten the spray bottle is deliberately made so that the lid cannot be unscrewed. Why? I do not know. I do not know anyone who knows anyone whose child imbibed a disinfectant or window cleaner from a spray bottle. I have read about some such cases in the news with regard to bottled dish cleaners, but those are still sold without the safety lids and none of the kids was severely hurt! However, I did read several cases about adults imbibing some seriously dangerous liquids (like lye) with sometimes lethal consequences because they themselves put them in soda bottles and did not label them properly. In my personal opinion, these safety lids have one purpose only to make the item single-use. They may save one life in a million or so, but they definitively increase plastic pollution by an order of magnitude, and the lives that cost cannot be easily quantified.

Do we really need 10 different shapes of a bottle for a disinfectant that gets poured into the toilet? Is that what the famous customer choice  is about? In my opinion, the choice should be about what is in the bottle and how well it works.

And this got me thinking, could all this be avoided? In my opinion yes. But it has to be done from the top down by a legislative action that forces the...

Some Election Officials Refused to Certify Results. Few Were Held Accountable. Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

A week and a half after last Novembers vote, members of the Board of Elections in Surry County, North Carolina, gathered in a windowless room to certify the results. It was supposed to be a routine task, marking the end of a controversial season during which election deniers harassed and retaliated against the countys elections director. Not long into the meeting, however, a staffer distributed a letter from two board members stating that they were refusing to certify.

According to the letter, the two members had decided with regard for the sacred blood shed of both my Redeemer and His servants and past Patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice that they must not call truth.

In their view, a federal judge whod struck down a North Carolina voter ID law for discriminating against minorities had transformed the states election laws into a grotesque and perverse sham. Tim DeHaan, one of the two board members who signed the letter, explained at the meeting, We feel the election was held according to the law that we have, but that the law is not right.

This argument failed to win over the three Democratic board members, according to a recording of the meeting. DeHaan eventually agreed to join the three on a technicality, and the board certified the election with a 4-1 vote. Jerry Forestieri, the Republican board secretary who also signed the letter, held out.

DeHaan and Forestieri declined to comment and did not respond to written questions.

Before 2020, local election officials seldom voted against certifying results. But in 2022...

Ron DeSantis, Interstate Autocratization, and Building Resistance It's Going Down

Support Vishal Singh HERE

Floridas far-Right Republican governor Ron DeSantis spoke in Southern California over the weekend kicking off a pre-election book tour and anti-leftism roadshow. DeSantis is undoubtedly preparing to run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In order to take on the juggernaut of Trumpism, he will need to court wealthy conservative donors and influential party elites across the United States and especially in California.

While traditionally considered a Democratic liberal stronghold the largest number of 2020 primary votes for Donald Trump came from California. Crucially for DeSantis: California Republicans now tend to favor the Florida governor over former president Donald Trump in todays primary matchup polls (so far) a major departure from other states polling showing Trump as still the firm party favorite.

But Super Tuesday is still a year away. So lets examine the deeper implications this visit and speech has on California and the rest of the country.

The event last Sunday was held in Simi Valley at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Whoever left the message got away safely and without any witnesses. Local police said in a statement that they have no suspects. Venue staff quickly tried to clean the paint off the sign but the outline of the words were still barely visible hours later when doors were opened for the event.

By 10 A.M., the roadside entrance was filled with LGBTQ+ flags and signs primarily condemning DeSantis as a fascist as around 100 liberals, progressives, and leftists united to protest Ron DeSantis. Protest organizer John Lapper issued a statement against DeSantis for attacking LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive...

Incredible New Survey Reveals Ancient Mayan Structures, Proving They Were Way Ahead Of Their Time True Activist

Good News Network

Beneath the rainforests of Guatemala, researchers that have been studying the Mayan Empire and they made an incredible discovery. They found that there are over 900 habitations, which include at least 4 big cities, with raised causeways hundreds of miles long that connect them all together.

History has proven that Mayan technology has always been sophisticated. However, this new research proves that they were advanced beyond their years.

It was during the light detected and ranging survey, or LiDAR, which according to its website uses the pulse from a laser to collect measurements to create 3D models and maps of objects and environments. In a nutshell, the system calculates how long it takes for beams of light to hit an object or surface and reflect back to the laser scanner.

In essence, it allows researchers, archaeologists and the like to do what used to take years, sometimes decades to discover, while also lowering the expense by now being able to simply flying over the site in an airplane a few times to get the info they need.

Are you intense like me? Is that good or bad? Freethought Blogs

My husband describes me as intense and hes absolutely right. Thats exactly how I feel most of the time. It can be unnerving and I dont know if its worse for me or the people around me. But despite the emotional war in my head, I try my best to be pleasant and polite after all, Im still a Midwesterner.

I think my intensity stems from a lot of things my mental illness, my personality, past experiences, etc. However, I cant think of one singular event that left me feeling this way. In fact, I dont ever remember not feeling this way.

Did this get worse with age? Maybe. Everything became more intense when I became a parent. I love my playful, spunky little girl, but motherhood came with a million new things to be anxious about as well as a few crippling bouts of depression. I find relief in knowing I am not alone in this. For once in my life, Im not the odd one out because Im sure many other parents feel the same way.

Even though I experience overwhelming highs and lows, I dont always see it as a bad thing. Im a very passionate person. When Im interested in something, I grab ahold and give it two thousand percent. Im organized, driven, and ambitious and I will just run with it. Im proud of my accomplishments accomplishments that probably would have never happened if I wasnt this intense.

I dont mean to be dramatic but that seems to be how my brain interprets everything. Some days I wish I could turn it off or at least down a couple of notches, but I cant. I feel fragile and anticipate that whatever happens next is going to break me.

Then again, some days I really see the positive aspects of my intensity. I accept it and wouldnt change it maybe even view it as a strength. I want everyone to feel my intensity through my art and writing. I think if you took it away I would be pretty boring. Its just a part of me and I wouldnt be the same without it.

Can anyone relate? How do your loved ones describe you? If your highs and lows were amplified, would you find a way to use them to your benefit? If you have a mental illness like me, how do you separate your illness from your personality? Do you have the magical ability to relax?

Putins Invasion Foretold WhoWhatWhy

As Russian tanks rolled across the border, some of our fellow progressives called it a justified attack in response to a threat from Western military imperialists.

The year was 1939.

That year, some on the Left, a minority for sure, bent themselves into moral pretzels to justify the Hitler-Stalin Pact and the Russian-German murder-drenched conquest of Poland.

As a New York Tribune columnist, the abolitionist Karl Marx, wrote before the US Civil War, when some Britons supported the slavers: History speaks twice; the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.

Indeed, there is a nauseating, horrifying humor watching one-time fighters against injustice, self-proclaimed anti-war activists, dancing cheek to cheek with Marjorie Taylor Greene, Ted Cruz, Tucker Carlson, and fascist pin-up Silvio Berlusconi sharing their love, or at least, their sad excuse-making, for Vladimir Putins invasion of Ukraine.

At its core, these strange bedfellows sympathy for the Russian invasion rests, ultimately, on the canard that it was NATOs expansion that provoked Putin to attack.

Pay attention to Putins own words.

On July 12, 2021, months before his tanks rolled, Putin issued a detailed statement of his casus belli, his justification for total seizure of Ukraine, not just the Donbas, in a 21-page-long essay, On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians. No one should speak of this war unless they have read this, Putins Mein Kampf.

Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere in his essay does Putin say one word about NATO expansion.

The meandering screed boils down to two points: First, Ukraine has always been an inseparable part of Russkiy Mir, the soul and body of Mother Russia, for more than a thousand years.

But its not true. Putins phantasmic claim reaches back to the 10th century, to Volodymyr, grand prince of the Kievan-Rus principality founded, not by the Slavs they conquered, but as an extension of the Viking empire. The rulers of Ukraine and this proto-Russia were Swedish. Volodymyr (namesake of both Zelenskyy and Putin), rul...

Atlanta, GA: Elders Say Stop Cop City! It's Going Down

Report on recent solidarity demonstration in Atlanta with the movement to Stop Cop City. Originally posted to Defend the Atlanta Forest.

On Monday, March 6th, a group of elders and a young person in support visited the corporate offices of Brasfield & Gorrie, as well as five B&G worksites around Atlanta, to call on the company to Drop Cop City. It is currently the general contractor on the project, officially known as the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.

At each site, they held banners for the workers and passersby to see, and tried to talk to the construction manager in charge. At one site, after speaking with and handling flyers to dozens of workers from many countries, the manager appeared and threatened to have us arrested. At the final site, on Peachtree Street at Pershing Point Park, the elders held banners in the intersection while the light was red, passing out more flyers and getting honks of support from many.

They found that many Atlantans did not know about Cop City and were glad to learn about it but sad that it exists.

Background: The Atlanta Police Foundation, supported and funded by major corporations such as Target, Home Depot, and Coca-Cola, has contracted with B&G to build the largest police training facility in the U.S., creating an environmental disaster for Atlanta. The facility will destroy at least 85 acres of trees in the Weelaunee (South Atlanta) Forest watershed adjacent to a residential neighborhood to train police forces from around the country and the world. Plans include shooting ranges, roads for high-speed chases, a mock city to practice urban warfare, explosives detonations and a Black Hawk helicopter landing pad.

Our group of elders the Rocking Chair Rebellion joins with local residents and the mostly young people who occupied the forest to oppose the project. It was approved over the objections of 70% of those who testified at a 17-hour public hearing. We are visiting other B&G construction sites to call on the company to DROP COP CITY from its clientele.

Whats Wrong with Cop City?

The Show Must Go On: On Sundays Arrests at the South River Music Festival It's Going Down

Report published by the Atlanta Community Press Collective (ACPC) on the recent arrests in Atlanta during ongoing protests to stop Cop City.

The Atlanta Community Press Collective (ACPC) received the following submission on 3/7/2023. In the following statement, the authors describe the South River Music Festival that took place on the first and second day of the Week of Action and the police violence and repression directed toward festival goers on Sunday night. The opinions herein reflect those of the authors, and not ACPC.

After a day and a half of jubilant celebration at the South River Music Festival, the atmosphere suddenly shifted. The sound of roughly 30 police cruisers cut through Suede Cassidys jazz set. Police darted into the RC Field, some with guns drawn, and indiscriminately began to attack, tase, and arrest music festival attendees. One attendee received death threats from intruding officers. Another was beaten, concussed, and rushed to Grady Hospital. Another reported that an officer drew his side arm and fired over their head as they chased them into the woods. As the police pushed into the forest along the bike path, they were met with flying soup cans and fireworks, which kept them at bay.

A well-intentioned person jumped on the festival stage and yelled that the police were attacking their friend and everyone needed to help. At the sound of this, panic spread throughout the crowd and people began to rush to the exits. Police blocked exits and arrested, detained, or harassed those trying to leave. Festival goers quickly rallied to keep everyone together. They could be heard chanting Stop Cop City!, GSP, murderers!, and The show must go on! together as they returned to the stage.

Among those that remained at the music festival were elderly couples, toddlers and children, punk rockers, and college students. Festival organizers urged people to stay calm and to stick together. As the police held the exits and organized their plan to further disperse the crowd, getting their Bearcat stuck in the mud in the process, music festival attendees turned their attention to Faye Webster, who took the stage. As she played, small groups huddled together around bonfi...

Lowland Snow Flakes in March Plus Does Global Warming Contribute to Cold Waves Cliff Mass Weather Blog

My new podcast (see information below) not only talks about the current weather situation but answers a question many of you are asking:

Has Global Warming/Climate Change contributed to increased numbers and intensity of cold waves...and particularly cold waves over the western U.S.?

The answer is definitively no, something noted by statistics provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a number of peer-reviewed articles (see EPA graphic below).

Graphic courtesy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

And then there is the current chilly situation.  Unbelievably, forecast models show two situations with the potential for light lowland snow (with little accumulation).

The accumulated SNOWFALL through 10 AM Thursday is shown below.  Nothing major, but southwest Washington and northeast Oregon may get some flakes. Light snow over the eastern slopes of the WA Cascades.

Uvalde District Attorney Fights Release of Public Records Against Wishes of Most Families Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

This article is co-published with The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local newsroom that informs and engages with Texans. Sign up for The Brief Weekly to get up to speed on their essential coverage of Texas issues.

Uvaldes district attorney has joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in fighting the release of public records related to last years mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, arguing that all of the families who lost children want them withheld. But attorneys for a vast majority of the families are refuting that claim, saying that the information should be made public.

These Uvalde families fundamentally deserve the opportunity to gain the most complete factual picture possible of what happened to their children, wrote Brent Ryan Walker, one of the attorneys who represents the parents of 16 deceased children and one who survived, in a court affidavit filed Tuesday evening.

Numerous news organizations, including The Texas Tribune and ProPublica, are suing DPS for records that could provide a more complete picture of law enforcements response to the shooting, which left 19 students and two teachers dead in the border community.

The states top police agency has refused to release records, including incident reports, internal communications, ballistic reports and body-camera footage.

Last week, Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell supported DPS position in a court filing. Disclosing such records could jeopardize any criminal charges Mitchell may seek in response to an investigation by the Texas Rangers, her office wrote.

Mitchell did not respond to multiple requests for comment. She previously...

Terrifying dive in Antarctic lake reveals bizarre, ancient life Freethought Blogs

This video follows a couple divers and their support team, as they cut through nine meters of ice (just under 30 feet, for my USian readers) to dive in the appropriately-named Lake Untersee, a large, freshwater lake on the edge of East Antarctica. Its frozen over year-round, but theres still plenty of liquid water, and as Jeff Goldbloom would say, life finds a way.

The picture shows fossilized stromatolites, cut into squares to show the many layers that made up the structure. The upper surface is covered with conical shapes, and you can see how the layers underneath built up to form them.

Normally when I cover research on or around Antarctica, it has to do with this planets climate, but Untersee is such a harsh and isolated location that the main interest, aside from studying whats down there, is in how it might help us find life in extreme conditions on other planets.

Whats down there, it seems, is stromatolites. These are layered structures formed by microbes gluing sand and other stuff together into their microbial mat. Over many generations, they form the alien shapes you can see on the lake floor in the video below. These structures fossilize well, which is probably why stromatolites represent the oldest evidence of life we have on this planet.

The divers first attempt, after a few days of digging a hole in ice, was aborted after the rebreather apparatus malfunctioned and started putting chemical-tainted water into the tube one of the divers was supposed to be breathing from. Just after they got the divers out, there was a storm with 100mph/160kph winds that lasted 24 hours, after which they had to dig all the snow out of their diving hole.

Ive never had a whole lot of interest in learning to use scuba gear. On the one hand, I think itd be pretty cool to be able to poke around underwater for a while like that, but on the other hand, there are a lot of ways it can go wrong, not to mention that I definitely dont have the money for a hobby like that. Even if I do take up diving someday, I can guarantee Ill never try it in a place like Antarctica. I definitely see the appeal, but as with cave exploration, Im afraid I may just be too much of a coward. As for diving in caves? Yeah, Ill pass on that. Honestl...

Theyre Back: BBC Says Haters and Conspiracy Theorists Have Returned to Twitter (Maria)

The author writes, Hundreds of accounts that were recently allowed back on Twitter have been spreading abuse or misinformation, a BBC investigation has found. In exclusive research, BBC Monitoring analyzed over 1,100 previously banned Twitter accounts that were reinstated under new owner Elon Musk. We found evidence of problematic content posted on the platform in over a third of them. Mr Musk says he is a free speech absolutist. In November, he announced a general amnesty to suspended accounts that had not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.

Election Deniers Take Aim at Group That Helps States Maintain Voter Rolls (Russ)

The author writes, At a time of hyperpolarization over voting and elections, Democrats and Republicans had largely managed to agree on one thing that a little-known data-sharing consortium of more than 30 states has helped keep voter rolls updated and free of opportunities for fraud. But the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), as the consortium is known, has been straining lately under the weight of accusations and misinformation from election deniers.

The author writes, The Supreme Court in the coming months will decide whether President Joe Bidens student-loan forgiveness program can stand and potentially offer relief to millions of borrowers or keep them saddled with the debt. [Last week], the High Court heard oral arguments on the loan forgiveness plan, with the conservative justices, who hol...

A Conversation With Dan Ellsberg On Assange And The State Of Journalism Shadowproof

Shadowproof and Project Censored present a conversation between Kevin Gosztola and Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg to mark the release of Kevins book, Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange.

The book is available today, March 7, from Censored Press and Seven Stories Press. It is a crucial and compelling guide to the United States governments case against the WikiLeaks founder and the implications for press freedom.

Kevin Gosztola is a rare journalist who understands the abominable threat that the case against Assange poses to press freedom, says Daniel. I rely on his indispensable reporting not only to stay informed about Assange, but also to follow developments in the wider war on whistleblowers.

Daniel has spent many decades sharing not only his experiences as a Nixon-era whistleblower but also showing support for fellow whistleblowers, who have faced similar attacks. He testified at the extradition trial against Assange in the United Kingdom in September 2020. He is also a board member for the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

We thank Daniel for his generosity, and all the kindness he has shown to whistleblowers and independent journalists while standing up for peace and truth-telling.

Below is the conversation between Kevin and Daniel on Guilty of Journalism.
