The Republican lane problem Freethought Blogs

In political analyses of political races in the US, the kids in the media these days like to use the metaphor of lanes to signify where candidates stand with respect to their rivals. Traditionally, the lanes had labels such as progressive, liberal, centrist, moderate, and conservative that, while hardly precisely defined, gave one a vague sense of whether that person was aligned with ones own values or not. One could make the distinctions more fine-grained by separating them on economic/fiscal and social polices, so that one could describe someone as a fiscal conservative who is socially liberal and so on. So in principle one could identify many different ideological lanes that people could be pigeonholed into. (Warning: This post is going to overwork the lane metaphor to death.)

But when it comes to current Republican politics, all that has to be thrown out of the window because since Donald Trump, the lanes are no longer defined by ideology. What we have is the Trump lane and the non-Trump lanes. The Trump lane is defined by whatever Trump thinks serves his own interests and will enable him to win and that ideologically amorphous structure makes it harder for his competitors to find their own lanes, since the Trump lane can weave erratically across ideological lines, as he opportunistically seizes on any issue to attack his opponents, even if it involves flat-out lying about them and himself. For example, his stance against cuts to Social Security and Medicare makes those who are on record as favoring privatizing or cuts (such as Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and Mike Pence) vulnerable to attacks from him. He has already started doing so.

The non-Trump lane is also forced to stick very closely to the Trump lane since they do not want to alienate his fanatical base which makes it even hard for them to articulate why they should be preferred over Trump. In a crowded primary race, it is possible for someone to gain the nomination with just a plurality and not a majority of delegates or votes, and the person most likely to benefit from that is Trump since he starts out with such a big advantage in name recognition and with his ability to get media attention. I have no doubt that even if the Republican primary race is bitter and divisive, the party will rally round the eventual winner if it is Trump, just like they did in 2016, in which the party establishment and candidate after candidate tried and failed to bring him down using all manner of attacks.

The main problem would be if he does not get the nomination. In such an...

On International Womens Day, Dido Speaks to Us Across the Millennia WhoWhatWhy

Something Different

Arma virumque cano, Virgil began his Aeneid, the epic telling the story of the founding and glorious history of Rome: Arms and the man, I sing.

The man. Of course. Rome was all about manly virtues war, conquest, rape, enslavement, and patriotic assassinations galore. And Virgil, the state poet of Rome, sang of them all.

Today, as we observe International Womens Day, lets hear what a woman Dido, fabled queen of ancient Carthage, eventually to become Romes great superpower rival might have said about all that manly virtue, albeit channeled through the imagination of, yes, a man. Should anyone wish to turn me in to the cultural appropriation police, theyll know where to find me.

The central irony of the monologue that follows turns on Virgils treatment of Dido in his rendition of Romes founding story. Under contract to the Emperor Augustus, the poet needed to explain the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome, whitewash Romes bloody history, justify its imperial ambitions, and glorify the various Roman virtues in sharp contrast, of course, to the depravity of the rest of the world, over which Rome would extend its bloody Pax Romana.

Virgil, poem

It was a tall order, but in the quasi-mythological tale of fierce Queen Dido and her entanglement with a Trojan prince named Aeneas, who had fled with his followers from the ruins of Troy, Virgil had his whole storyline: The tempest-tossed Aeneas is blown by the scheming gods over to Carthage in North Africa; there, he is saved by Dido, who, manipulated by the same scheming gods Cupid shoots her with one of those little arrows falls in love with him.

The Marjorie Taylor Greeneing of America WhoWhatWhy

Much as Im loath to even mention her name, Marjorie Taylor Greene, that irrepressible, empty bobblehead and Ultimate Karen, has a new project: She wants to break up the country.

We need a national divorce, the Republican member of Congress tweeted last week. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government. Everyone I talk to says this.

She ought to get out more.

In our nave, less-enlightened days, such a sentiment would have been considered treason, but now its called auditioning for vice president.

There are many practical impediments to her plan, one being that theres no such thing as a completely red state. The country is a complicated political map, a marbleized swirl of purple, with the cities tending to run more blue, the countryside more red. If so-called red states actually secede, will blue cities like Austin, Dallas, and Nashville have to build battlements around their borders like in the old days?

Id balk at giving Greene much more attention shes always been a few fries short of a Happy Meal but the problem is, this idea is not uniquely hers; its becoming something of a shibboleth of the Republican party. Astonishingly, the Lost Cause of the Confederacy lives on in the party of Lincoln.

Go to Europe and you can still find remnants of these walls, built when cities were surrounded by potential menace, their stone-and-mortar defenses often 12 feet thick.

Now theyre tourist destinations, reminders of a more violent past (though the Ukraine war reminds us that territorial ambition is not a thing of the past). But you still need a passport to get into the country.

Maybe under Greenes plan, to go from red Tennessee to blue Massachusetts (or Memphis) youll be able to just flash your color-coded drivers license, but it might make it tougher to nip out for a six-pack across the border.

Greenes tweet continued, From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrats traitorous America Last policies, we are done.

So its the other guys fault. And its the other side...

Twitter will not fade away in a controlled demolition Freethought Blogs

Elon Musk keeps sinking to new depths. In his latest escapade, one of his employees was so baffled by the confusion that reigns at Twitter, he asked for clarification on whether he was still employed or not. He responded by firing him, insulting him, and ridiculing him for having a disability.

Thats a lawsuit right there. The mans disability is muscular dystrophy hes going to die from it. Also, one of the reasons for the confusion is that his employment was a special case. Hed founded a company that Twitter bought for $100 million, and hed generously taken his buyout in the form of wages over an extended time, and the whole sum will come due when his employment ends. Like, when Musk fires him.

Also, he seems to be a genuinely good guy, a kind of anti-Musk.

Musk keeps detonating these bombs of incompetence. I agree with this fellow who thinks Twitter is doomed, and the collapse is coming fast.

Its already real bad over there. Elon Musk said yesterday that ad revenues have fallen 50%. The site is experiencing major outages almost once a week. During the most recent outage earlier this week, Elon was laser-focused on the important stuff: reply-guying Jordan Peterson. The Twitter Blue rollout has been such a disaster that he fired almost the entire team. The company isnt paying rent on its office space. It recently tried to create a new income stream by selling office plants to employees.

But take a deeper look and the company is in even worse shape than it appears. Twitter has two financial time bombs waiting to go off. My hunch is that Elon will file for bankruptcy as soon as one of these time bombs self-detonates. I cant say exactly when that will be.

I give it about six months.

The two time bombs are 1) a battery of lawsuits from all those fired employees for unlawful termination, and 2) a collection of massive fines from the FTC and the EU. He cant avoid those. He paid too much for a company he bought as a present to his ego, and hes been making it cataclysmically worse. Im just biding my time, waiting for the inevitable and spectacular splash when Musk crashes.

What a horrible ideaplease do it Freethought Blogs

If I created a non-woke atheist convention, focusing on atheist activism and fun, starring notable canceled speakers and stars, would you be
Very interested 23%
Somewhat interested 18%
Not interested 59%

Who are the canceled speakers and stars hed invite? Its not as clean an identity as he imagines. Is Richard Dawkins one of them? Because people have expressed their strong dislike of his views, but hes not exactly broke and living on the street, and he would still be a strong draw. Would I be one of them? Ive been canceled by a huge number of atheists, and never get invited to speak at conferences anymore .

Its interesting that even in the limited, select group of regressive atheists who follow David Silverman, his poll couldnt even break 50% in favor. Not that it actually matters, this is a kind of Elon Musk non-poll where the pollster is going to just ignore the numbers.

P.S. Im only going to attend if there is a ball pit.

As the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) pushes forward with a controversial highway expansion, displaced residents feel unsupported. I really dont know where I am gonna go. Im lost and Im confused. Im lost, said Kelly Village resident Termeria Bartley in a 2021 interview with the Houston Press.

Her home in Kelly Village, a housing complex operated by the Houston Housing Authority, joined the projected 344 businesses, five churches, 160 single-family homes, 433 multi-family residential apartment units and an additional 486 public and low-income housing slated for destruction to make way for the expansion of Interstate 45, part of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP).

It seems to be racial tradition in my community. TxDOT did this before, remarked Kendra London, who grew up in the historically Black Fifth Ward, which houses Kelly Village. Londons grandmother, Ella Morris, remembers how construction of Interstate 10 damaged the Fifth Ward during the 1960s. Once surrounded by homes, the residents of Kelly Village now lived at the confluence ofalmost underneathtwo major highways, wrote LaRence Snowden, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Houston Housing Authority about the consequences of the initial highway construction.

In addition to further bisecting the Fifth Ward, TxDOTs plans for the NHHIP reshape Houstons downtown. Strong Towns already reported on the wrecking ball that came f...

The Federal Government Is Investigating an Illinois School Where Students With Disabilities Were Frequently Arrested Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

This story is a collaboration between ProPublica and the Chicago Tribune.

The U.S. Department of Education has opened a civil rights investigation into a tiny Illinois school district for students with disabilities to determine whether children enrolled there have been denied an appropriate education because of the practice of referring students to law enforcement for misbehaviors.

The investigation was initiated Feb. 13, two months after ProPublica and the Chicago Tribune reported how the district, which operates a therapeutic day school for students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities, turned to police to arrest students with stunning frequency.

An Education Department spokesperson said its Office for Civil Rights does not discuss details of open investigations. But in a five-page letter dated Feb. 24, federal investigators requested numerous records from the Four Rivers Special Education District, including details of every student discipline incident for the past two school years at Garrison School in Jacksonville.

For each incident in which police were summoned, investigators asked for the reason police got involved, an accounting of how much classroom time was missed and how that time was made up, and records of any communication with parents.

The district, which also provides special education services to students in nearby school districts, was given 15 days to respond and was directed not to destroy any records.

I emphasize that at this time OCR has reached no conclusion as to whether the District has violated any law OCR enforces, wrote Catherine Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights at the Education Department, in openi...

Scientists Believe Theres Life On One Of Saturns 83 Moons, and They Dont Even Need A Spacecraft To Land There And Prove it True Activist

Solar System

Life in space doesnt seem so farfetched these days. With all the talk of SpaceX and the incredible images from the James Webb telescope, outer space no longer feels like its light years away.

Now, scientists share that there may be some heavy evidence of life on one of Saturns icy moons named Enceladus, and a robot spacecraft that happens to have taken some of the methane emissions coming out of its liquid interior may just prove their theory to be true.

Now, NASA just needs for the robot to take a sample of these plumes, or if not, punch a hole through the planets exterior in order to take a closer look at the salty and warm ocean below.

When NASA first took a look at this moon back in 1980, they didnt think there was anything to really check out since it just looked like another icy ball of snow in the sky. However, during a second NASA trip that took place between 2005 and 2017, what they found was that this moons thick icy layer was actually covering a large and warm saltwater ocean inside that released methane gas, something that norma...

Why doesnt EA divest from crypto? Freethought Blogs

After Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) was arrested for massive fraud in November, there has been a reckoning in the EA movement to which SBF belonged. Ive linked to several critics discussing how SBFs actions could have been attributed to EA philosophy and practices, and even offered my own humble commentary.

Of course, its very easy to get distracted by philosophical arguments, and miss whats staring in our face. The much more obvious takeaway from the whole affair is: EA was overinvested in cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is evil, why were they invested in it at all?

Yes, fraud can come from any sector, and no, not every person involved in crypto is fraudulent to the same degree as SBF. No, SBF is not proof of the depravity of crypto. What SBF proves, is that EA has been supportive of, and dependent on crypto. EA insiders must have already known, and maybe some readers already knew, but I didnt know! I didnt know EA had so much crypto in it! Why is that? And why dont they stop?

The most likely and obvious answer is that many people in EA are convinced that crypto is good, or at least not convinced that its bad. And if any EA folks are anti-crypto, they are either unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

In general, I am pessimistic about ever persuading people in EA of anything, because theyre the sort of people who demand conformity to their own rigorous style of argument. No, I dont have any new arguments as to why crypto is evil. Instead, I observe that crypto-skepticism is curiously muted in EA. Rather than expecting someone like me to supply a criticism of crypto, EA should be spending its own damn analytical, educational, and institutional resources to learn how to invest ethically.

Lets look at what people have said about crypto in the EA forums.

Crypto as a cause area

Temporary Occupation in NYC Calls for Divestment from Cop City in Atlanta, GA It's Going Down

Report back from solidarity action in NYC calling for divestment from the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF).

In solidarity with Defend the Atlanta Forest, the WDS-NYC is calling for Banyan Street Capital, the real estate firm that owns 191 Peachtree Towers, to end their lease agreement with the Atlanta Police Foundation (or the APF)*.

During lunch hours on February 24th, there was a temporary occupation in the lobby of 180 Maiden Lane, a skyscraper in Manhattans financial district also owned by Banyan Street Capital.

Tents were erected, a speech was given, fliers were distributed to lunch goers, a banner was held until it was snatched and thrown outside by the buildings temperamental security guards. Demonstrators were able to quickly recover it and sneak back inside with it through another entrance. The vibe was lighthearted and jovial; a true feat in such an austere locale that had probably otherwise never known joy.

The lobby of 180 Maiden Lane is a public/private atrium. A glass-encased slab of concrete, layered with astroturf and dotted with sickly looking trees. Perhaps to a Wall Street banker, this is a fine substitute for nature, but for us, it is a symbol of exactly what we are fighting against: the destruction of the environment for the creation of simulated environments. The suffocation of life under the concrete of capital.

This was not the first action targeting Banyan Street Capital in New York City. Earlier in the week, on February 22, there was a demonstration at their office in Manhattan. The Banyan property manager came down to announce that the lease with the APF will be up soon, and that they will look into terminating it.

These actions were part of a national week of solidarity that saw demonstrations and other events take place in over 40 cities across the country.

The struggle for the forest is the struggle for all life, no argument.

From NYC to ATL, we are all forest defenders.

The Atlanta Police Foundation is the organization behind cop city, the plan to clear 385 acres of public forest in order to build a $90 million militarized police training facility in Atlanta.

Illinois to Relocate at Least Half of Residents in Facility Plagued by Abuse and Cover-Ups Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Lee Enterprises, along with Capitol News Illinois. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

The Illinois Department of Human Services plans to dramatically reduce the number of patients with developmental disabilities who live at the embattled state-run Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center.

In an exclusive interview before an expected Wednesday announcement, IDHS Secretary Grace Hou outlined a repurposing and restructuring of Choate, located in rural Anna, about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. That process will start with the relocation of 123 residents with developmental disabilities who entered the facility voluntarily roughly half the current population.

In a separate interview with reporters, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker said that IDHS has been working on improvements at Choate since he first took office in January 2019. But he said it became clear, I would say certainly over the last year and, in part, because of your reporting that there were more significant changes that needed to be made.

The announcement which the governors office billed as a transformational behavioral health initiative in southern Illinois comes after months of reporting by Capitol News Illinois, Lee Enterprises and ProPublica that detailed the beatings of patients, a concerted effort by some staff members to cover up abuse and serious neglect, the intimidation of employees who reported it and the attempt to coerce new employees into participating in the abuse or being silent about it. Local prosecutors have filed felony charges against at least 49 people, both residents and employees, since 2015, a review of court records by reporters showed.

Hou also said the reporting played into...

Video: How pseudoscientific 911 call analysis became a weapon against US citizens Freethought Blogs

Back in October, I posted a Mnecat video dismantling the bullshit of body language experts, and one of the problems she points to is the destructive use of these so-called experts in the instead of body language, we have cops and their ilk analyzing 911 calls, and arbitrarily deciding whether they think the person making the call is lying. This fits in well alongside polygraph tests and lying about evidence, as another tool police can use to try to bully or gaslight a person into making a false confession:

As you heard, her [20 year old] son initially said that his mom had killed herself, before realizing that she had been bound with a belt and stabbed many times.

The cops pulled him into an interrogation room and kept him there for 13 hours, convinced that he was the murderer. Why? Well, why on earth would he have assumed his mom committed suicide? (3:23)

They were convinced it was him, but eventually, the cops checked his location data on his phone and found that he was nowhere near his home when his mom was murdered, and DNA at the scene was connected to a man who had been arrested multiple times for burglary in the past and who was eventually convicted of the crime.

In the Rebecca Watson video below, you can hear the 911 call (theres a content warning before that point, in case you need it), and yeah the kid sounds all over the place, and initially mis-understood what he was seeing. Based on that, and some cops opinion of what he would do under those circumstances, they interrogated him for 13 hours. I think most of us are aware of how miserable it would be to be locked in a featureless room with a cop for 13 hours, constantly being accused of murder, and fed stories about what a shitty person you are. How much worse would that be if your mother had just been murdered? If you had found her body?

And all they had to do to avoid tormenting that poor man was check the location data on his phone, or wait for the DNA evidence. They didnt do that first, because they care more about getting a conviction any conviction than they do about the danger of imprisoning, or executing, an innocent person. The more you dig into the policing system in the U.S., the more examples you find of cops just absolutely wrecking peoples lives because theyre too lazy, too cowardly, too sadistic, or too full of themselves to do their jobs properly.

Now, I don&#...

Im invited! Freethought Blogs

The Board of Regents is visiting campus, and I found this invitation slipped under my office door. (Not from the Regents, obviously.)

This is clearly a dig at a certain regent who made some stupid comments. Id like to go, except

  1. My attendance would contribute nothing to diversity
  2. Nobody from the Board of Regents will bother to show up
  3. Thats my birthday! Cant I find a better way to celebrate it?

My counterarguments would be

  1. But it would show that even old white men support diversity
  2. I care what the students think, not the Board of Regents
  3. No.

I guess thats my Thursday evening planned out then.

Freedom for Manuel Gmez Vzquez, Member of the Zapatista Support Bases It's Going Down

Communique from the Ajmaq Network of Resistance and Rebellion demanding the release of Indigenous Zapatista political prisoner, Manuel Gmez Vzquez.

Manuel Gmez Vzquez is a member of the Zapatista Support Bases. For two years and three months, he has been imprisoned in the Centro Estatal de Reinsercin Social de Sentenciados No. 16, in Ocosingo, Chiapas. It is important to mention that Manuel is Maya-Tseltal, a 22-year old campesino, originally from the Rebel Zapatista Autonomous Municipality of Ricardo Flores Magn, belonging to the Good Government Council of Pensamiento Rebelde, in Caracol IX, Nuevo Juresaln, in the official municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas.

The imprisonment of our compaero fills us with rage. He was arrested illegally by an armed civilian group and by community authorities. He was tortured and his human rights were violated. He was accused of a crime that he did not commit. Fabricating crimes is common practice of the judicial power of Chiapas, and this entire country. The state public prosecutors office shows its most racist and classist face without remorse, filling the prisons with those from below. The prisons are extermination camps for those same people. Yet, our compaero is not only imprisoned for being Indigenous and poor, but also for being a Zapatista. Because for the Mexican state, it is not only a crime being poor and racialized, but also being rebellious and dignified. Regardless of who is in power, criminalization against the rebellion of those from below is part of the strategy of war against those who organize and struggle. As our compas of FRAYBA rightly say:

Manuel is being criminalized because him and his family are members of the Zapatista Support Bases. The prosecutors office lacks the evidence to accuse him, so it has fabricated evidence in its favor, without presenting the supposed witnesses to testify. This has led on two occasions to the trial being deferred. Furthermore, the autopsies for the homicides do not exist. The state judicial power has already exceeded the two-year limit for any prisoner to be held in pretrial detention.

We join in demanding that the public prosecutors office free our compaero Manuel immediately. We want to make it clear that we will not back down in this struggle until he is released. We know well that in this struggle we are many. From our rebellious hearts, we make a call out to the National and International Sixth, to the individuals and collectives, to the Networks of Resistance and Rebellion, to do everything in your imagination and hearts, according to your forms, times, and geographies, to demand that the public prosecutor office and the judicial power of the state immediately...

Bee and Butterfly Numbers Are Falling, Even in Undisturbed Forests (Maria)

The author writes, Habitat destruction, pesticide use, and other human impacts are often blamed for the well-documented decline of insects in recent decades. But even in forests where few humans tread, some bees and butterflies are declining, researchers have found. Over the past 15 years, populations of bees shrank 62.5% and those of butterflies dropped 57.6% in a forest in the U.S. southeast. In addition, the number of bee species there fell by 39%, the team reports this month in Current Biology.

The legal nonprofit once sided with a Wisconsin pharmacist who refused to fill a birth control prescription on religious grounds. More recently, the Chicago-based organization has embraced a far different but equally divisive undertaking relentlessly questioning the integrity of elections.

On The Long Road To Organizing A Starbucks Union Shadowproof

In a word, the ongoing union organizing drive that has swept the coffee giant Starbucks can be described as unprecedented. Never before has a mass unionization effort of this magnitude gripped a fast food company in the United States. The humble origins of the barista-led Starbucks Workers United can be found in the Rust Belt city of Buffalo. It is there where the nation-wide unionization effort was publicly launched in August 2021.

As Starbucks Workers United (SBWU) expands from shop to shop, workers face an onslaught of union busting tactics from the company. But union fever is spreading rapidly nonetheless as Starbucks workers at over 400 locations have filed petitions for union elections, with more planning to do so.

Starbucks response to these efforts came as no surprise to veteran union organizers and former baristas involved with a lesser-known and very different unionization effort at the company that took place years ago by the Industrial Workers of the World.

Workers have won union elections at 291 stores and at two of the companys three roastaries at the time of this writing. Those numbers are only expected to grow. There are 7,335 workers represented by SBWU at union stores.

Starbucks barista Colter Chatriand got involved early in the organizing at his shop in Philadelphia. It kicked off once Buffalo started to make the news, he said. And what that did for us was, when I would be talking to people or trying to start conversations with people, it was extremely easy to just be able to reference Buffalo.

All eyes were on the three locations in Buffalo when the unthinkable happened: workers at two of the stores won their union elections, with tightly contested results at the third. Chatriand and other baristas were ecstatic.

Arjae Red was a barista and union organizer at SBWUs flagship store in Buffalo. They were aware of the organizing going on before they were hired, and joined a union organizing committee shortly thereafter. It did not take too long for Red to see the writing on the wall for how the company treats its workers.

They just basically lie. Theyre like military recruiters. They say youre going to get all these benefits when you come out and then you dont have anything, said Red.

Both Chatriand and Red have a similar background that propelled them to organize at Starbucks.

In 2017, Chatriand was living in Butte, Montana, an old mining town with a deep history of labor militancy with the radical, anti-capitalist Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), popularly known as the Wobblies. Chatriand became enamored with the history of the union, and in particular with Wobbly organizer Frank Little.

He was lynched by the bosses for his efforts to organize. Hes a local labor martyr in Butte, Chatirand said. It was th...

Can You Yell If a Bomb Train Is Coming to Your Town? Its Complicated. WhoWhatWhy

In the wake of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment, Governor Mike DeWine called on Congress to look into why the rural village didnt know ahead of time they had volatile chemicals coming through town.

We should know when we have trains carrying hazardous materials through the state of Ohio, DeWine said at a press conference.

This information is out there, but its probably not what the governor had in mind. With the derailment of the Norfolk Southern train receiving international attention, more railroad communities are now asking what is traveling through their backyard.

According to representatives from the United States Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, or PHMSA, all trains that carry hazardous materials are subject to hazard communication requirements. But this doesnt mean a rail company tells the residents what is going by their town every day.

The troika of hazard communications, according to the agency, contains the following: There is a listing of all cars with hazardous material on each train; signage detailing which car is carrying what material; and the use of AskRail, an electronic application used by first responders that gives up-to-the-minute details on a trains location and contents.

AskRail was created by the countrys largest railroad companies and first responders and is not made available to the public over concerns of public safety and terrorism. PHMSA told Grist that all major railroad companies, including Norfolk Southern, use this application and the agency is developing a proposal to make the use of this app mandatory and expand its use to smaller railroad companies as well.

In 2017, when New Jersey citizens and politicians demanded more transparency about the contents and schedules of trains moving through their state, in the wake of ...

Record late-winter cold wave hits the western U.S. Cliff Mass Weather Blog

The western U.S. is experiencing one of the coldest end-of-winter periods in the historical record, with too many cold records to list.

To illustrate, let me "warm up" by considering the departure from normal of the average maximum temperatures across the region (below).

Unbelievable-- in some parts of the region highs have been down by OVER 15F from normal.

Consider the long-term trend of the average high temperature at Los Angeles for the same period (2/20-3/5)

You will not believe it (below).  The last two weeks were the coldest for the entire record, going back to the mid-1930s.   LA residents are probably staying in their hot tubs.

For San Francisco, the past two weeks have had the coolest maximum temperatures since the latest 1960s.

The Republican contradictions on diversity Freethought Blogs

The Republican party, in terms of its policies and rhetoric, seems to have gone all in on appealing to white, older, xenophobic, and conservative voters. And yet, at the same time, it seems to be able to put forward, and get elected, people of color for various offices, and also attract some people of color as supporters. This article looks at what is going on with that seemingly contradictory dynamic.

Does [the Republican party] continue to move rightward, exciting its base by stoking white racial grievance?

Or does it pursue a multiracial strategy that can expand the partys reach?

Recent trends in the GOP suggest that it wants to do both and that indeed the two strategies are not so much at odds as it might appear.

In a striking development, Michigan Republicans selected in February 2023 a Christian nationalist and election denier as chair of the state party.

This rightward shift of the party is not itself surprising.

Whats striking is that Kristina Karamo, a Black woman, was elected over a white male candidate who also had Trumps endorsement.

The same voters who elevated Karamo also cheered Trumps supercharged racist rhetoric against Black people, immigrants, Mexicans, Muslims and nonwhite countries more generally during his campaigns and presidency.

And yet Karamo is hardly an anomaly.

While the party has made no substantive changes or moderation to its politics or policies around long-standing racial justice issues, it is slowly but steadily growing more racially diverse in its grassroots base, elected officials and opinion leaders.

Nikki Haley, a child of Indian immigrants, has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for president. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is Black, is also expected to do so fairly soon. How do people of color overcome the white supremacist underpinnings of many Republican policies?

Polls show that roughly 70% of Republicans believe the great replacement theory, a baseless belief that the Democratic Party is attempting to replace the white electorate in the United States with nonwhite immigrants.

Those same conservative voters are consistently motivated by white racial grievance in issues concerning public education, law enforcement, voting rights and affirmative action.

But what is interesting is that these same voters seem to be willing to accept candidates of color, provided they embrace those policies.

Yet studies also suggest that white conservatives will indeed support candidates of color, not out of a commitment to racial justice or even representation, but because they see it as a way to advance partisan and ideological interests.

Creationist thinks evo-devo refutes evolution Freethought Blogs

I love it when creationists decide to attack evolution by way of developmental biology. Yes, come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly. Our home is our terrible weakness, Im sure youll be able to frolic and thrive in our little domainheh heh heh <twirls mustache>

This fellow, David W. Swift, whose knowledge of development is maybe an inch deep and obtained entirely from information taken from basic textbooks, followed up by a conscious misreading of a few scientific papers with an eye to extracting only bits and pieces that support his conclusion, has decided that embryology is evidence against evolution.

It is quite well known that at a relatively early stage the embryos of a wide range of vertebrates look similar a so-called phylotypic stage and this is generally regarded as evidence of common ancestry.

What is not well known is that before this stage the early embryonic development of vertebrates is very diverse right from the earliest stages which clearly refutes their common ancestry.

Hes partly right. It is well known that there are embryonic similarites between vertebrates, and of course thats evidence for common ancestry. There is a lot of evidence for common ancestry, and that is one small piece of it.

Hes wrong when he says that it is not well known that early development is more diverse. Any developmental biology textbook that discusses comparative embryology is going to tell you that. We developmental biologists ALL know that. Its been a hot button topic of discussion for at least 50 years, probably longer. Mr Swift perused a select bunch of papers and just skipped over any that brought the topic up, so he could pretend he was the perceptive creationist who noticed, for the first time, a weakness in evolutionary theory? Such arrogance. Its especially annoying because he says nothing novel that he couldnt have found prominently discussed in the scientific literature.

Also, the known evidence that early development is a complex process with diverse patterns of execution in different organism does not refute common ancestry. The creationists seem unable to get into their heads that a short-sighted process driven by chance as a core mechanism, running over millions and billions of years, is going to generate complexity and diversity by its very nature. Observing that something is complex and diverse is evidence that an evolutionary process created it, rather than an engineer.

That doesnt stop him from expanding that claim into a whole tedious paper, published in the Discovery Institutes fake journal, Bio-Complexity...

Sweat the Small Stuff Strong Towns Media

(Source: Unsplash/JESHOOTS.COM.)

Im three months married now and part of this new life chapter involved moving into my husbands apartment. We live in a garage flat behind the home of a couple from church and Ive had fun the past few months turning it from a bachelor pad to a cozy home for two, plus a foster cat.

Becoming a wife has also meant becoming a homemaker, and I mean that quite literally. As the partner with the most flexible schedule, greater interest in housekeeping work, and generally better skills, its my job to transform this apartment into a home, which I dont mind. I could easily spend hours (and dollars, if Im not careful) at local thrift stores hunting for kitchen gadgets, dishes, and baskets. But thats the fun stuff. Theres also the not-so-fun stuff: wiping up spilt milk, washing dishes by hand (we have no dishwasher), and scrubbing the toilet. Some chores are shared and I am a firm believer in the honey-do list, but for the most part, keeping the home cute, clean, and comfortable is my job.

As Im sure you can imagine, its been somewhat of an adjustment, going from having shared chores with roommates and only having to clean up behind myself to managing a full apartment. Ill be honest that many mornings, my prayers revolve around asking for help to have a better attitude about my daily chores. There are times these tasks feel so mundane and I desperately would rather be doing something more important like, say, writing a Strong Towns article!

I havent had any grand epiphanies about the virtue of daily work (if you have, please share). But I do find meaning in the way that these little tasks make life easier for my husband,...

Seeding Hope Articles and Investigations - ProPublica

This story discusses pregnancy loss.

Jocelyn knew only one way to live. Growing up next to the Manombo Special Reserve in southeast Madagascar, his family taught him from a young age to see the forest as a source of income. His grandfather had been a logger, cutting trees for timber and burning wood to make charcoal to sell. His grandfather taught his father, and his father taught him.

It was dangerous work. He risked landing in jail for illegal logging every time he ventured into the protected reserve. I needed to feed my family, recalled Jocelyn, who doesnt use a surname; the vegetables he grew near his house werent enough. He also needed money for health care. Once, when his wife was pregnant and fell ill, he sold all of their plates and pans to pay for treatment at a government clinic. She wound up losing the baby anyway.

Then in 2019, Jocelyn went to a meeting that upended his life. Representatives from an American nonprofit, Health In Harmony, asked villagers who lived around the forest: What do you need from the world as a thank you to continue to protect this precious rainforest that the health of our planet depends on? The answers across 31 villages were consistent: health care, job alternatives and help growing food for their families.

Jocelyns wife, Falinety, holds Kristy as the family gathers for an evening meal.

The following year, representatives from each of those villages gathered in a soccer field to watch as their chiefs pressed inky thumbs onto paper, signing an agreement that affirmed their communities would stop encroaching on the forest. In return, Health In Harmony began providing affordable health care through mobile clinics and teaching residents how to grow more food and support themselves without cutting down more trees.

Founded in 2006 to save rainforests and combat climate change, Health In Harmony may have stumbled upon a way to help prevent the next pandemic.

Researchers have shown that deforestation can drive outbreaks by bringing people closer to wildlife, which can shed dangerous vir...

A Fire in the Shadows: A Bolingbrook Babbler Story

A Fire in the Shadows is out today. If you placed a preorder, you should have it today, and thank you for your support. Great American Satan has a review up. Anthony Avina reviewed it as well. It has a 4.29 star average on Goodreads. I will enjoy it while I can before the Goodreads trolls attack.

It is a complete story, but its also an introduction to Lydia, a vampire who regained her ability to feel love and compassion. Shell play an important role in the future Bolingbrook Babbler Stories.

Heres the description:

Vampire, intelligence scout, paranormal protector, and emotional liability

Bolingbrook has long been rumored to be a hub of paranormal and alien activity and Lydia should knowshes a vampire. But that doesnt mean she fits in. Not when shes a target for other vampires and reliant on her blood familys protection because of her inconvenient inclination to experience feelings.

Except right now, Lydia has bigger things to worry about than her recent rejection by a human or her blood sister Auroras relentless teasing. An army of weredeer are gathering near town and they need to gather intelligence fast.

When enforcers from one of Chicagos vampire kingdoms threaten the Bolingbrook Babblers stunning chief editor, Aurora accuses Lydia of having feelings again. But even if Lydia does have a crush on the unsuspecting Sara, she deserves their protection.

Only Lydia hadnt counted on how powerful their enemies are. Or the sort of unexpected revelations that will come to light if Lydia dares to risk rejection again

Get a Fire in the Shadows to find out what Lydia will risk.

Message from Yaqui Political Prisoner Fidencio Aldama to the National Indigenous Congress It's Going Down

Message from Yaqui political prisoner Fidencio Aldama to the national assembly of the National Indigenous Congress held on the 4-5 of March, 2023, in Tehuacn, Puebla.

Hi, everyone. My name is Fidencio Aldama Prez. I am a member of the Yaqui tribe, from the town of Loma de Bcum, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. One of the eight Yaqui towns which make up the Yaqui nation. A town that has stood firm in struggle and resistance. I carry in my blood, flesh, and skin this grand history of the Yaqui nation, which has for centuries struggled against extermination, violence, and territorial dispossession.

Today, more than ever, I have embraced the words of the Yaqui oath, those words that have been captured in my chest, that run in my blood. I have embraced the struggle and the history, which is the essence of my resistance and rebellion, which is autonomous, with ancestral claims of education, security, justice, and spirituality.

From our self-defense comes our self-government, because I am of the Yaqui Tribe, and because capitalism was born from the blood of our people. We must collectively build, defend, and exercise the agreements of the poor, as the constitution of our people. We must continue existing with self-determination and autonomy, to decide the manner we want to organize ourselves in our territory, and the form in which we want to construct our future.

This future will be governed by the following ideals: to serve and not be served, to build and not destroy. And, as I have always said: I do not attack, but rather defend what is ours, what our ancestors have left us. They have taught us to respect our roots, culture, traditions, and customs, but the white man, those allied with money, have intervened producing division in our communities. Even so, there are those of us loyal to the Yaqui nation, who dont bow before money, who carry in our hearts the Yaqui oath.

Im still here, a land defender of the Yaqui tribe, even though Im locked inside this prison in Ciudad Obregn, Sonora, excluded from my customs and traditions. I wont give up the struggle. Rather, I will...

Mars Has Its Very Own Winter Wonderland And Its More Ethereal And Fascinating Than You Can Imagine True Activist

NASA

Once again, photos from outer space have managed to blow our minds after images taken on an orbiter in space were released, showing what a winter wonderland looks like on the planet Mars. From frost, to gold trimmed cloud-looking formations, to shimmery stained rock formations, these photos have managed to prove that winter on earth isnt the only fascinating place this time of year.

However, what may be a huge difference is the fact that winter on Mars is much colder than you can imagine, with many of these landscape photos being taken in temperatures as low as -123C.

The machine that took these photos of the coldest season on the planet Mars was the HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera, which happened to be on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

NASA shares that so far, these images happen to be the most fabulous discovery theyve made at the end of winter, taken during the time all that build up ice began to thaw out and sublimate into the atmosphere. Its during this time that the ice takes on these breathtaking yet eerie forms and shapes, which were captured on camera.

The Brinkman is Back Freethought Blogs

FreethoughtBlogss own William Brinkman is at it again!  He has a new story set in his Bolingbrook Babbler Literary Universe, and I got an advance reader copy of it.  The rest of you rabble can order it tomorrow, at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers.  This is my review.

Like Williams The Rift, A Fire in the Shadows is action-packed genre fiction, set in the Weekly World News -inspired setting of his Bolingbrook Babbler articles.  At around 12k words, its long for a short story, but only covers a few short events.

Theres a lot of information around those events, and the author wants the story to stand on its own, so the exposition can land like bricks upside the head.  The references to events in The Rift feel particularly unnecessary, beyond the important fact of the weredeer incursion.  I do like being able to include a sentence like that in a review.

Still, as I said before, its fun to see SFF genre fiction that isnt beholden to the conventions laid down by the titans of Intellectual Property.  Theres stuff here to enjoy.  The vampire battle strategizing reminded me of a bit in From Russia with Love where James Bond was thinking about how he could totally judo chop through his opponents chest if he wanted to, but now wasnt the time for it.

One thing that struck me odd.  The vampire characters seem to regard their own human ethnicities as a thing to be disdained, and Im not convinced theyd have any reason to feel that way.  This element seemed like a ploy to spell out the characters backgrounds without breaking from the plot and dialogue to do so.  In general, the bitchy attitudes of the vampires were unappealing, and while that may have been intentional, its not interesting to me as a reader.  I know some other readers like it, so YMMV.  I did like the main character Lydia being a lovefool like The Cardigans.

Williams writing style spells out a lot.  Show, dont tell is one of the central dogmas of 20th century literature, but there are situations where even back then it was ignored....

Report Back from Rally in Solidarity with Resistance to Cop City in Avon, MA It's Going Down

Report on rally outside of an Atlas office in solidarity ongoing resistance to Cop City in Avon, MA.

On Sunday, March 5th 2023, in observance of the Stop Cop City Week of Action, an unaffiliated group of forest friends gathered near an Atlas office building in Avon Massachusetts to demand that they drop their contracts and all support for the project.

Here is the forest friends statement:

The Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta is the proposed site of a massive police training facility, known to most as Cop City. Cop City is the logical outgrowth of violent, racialized capitalism in the United States. Corporations and wealthy Atlantans believe that they need a large and well-equipped police force to tamp down crime in the city they are working to gentrify, and have thus contributed financially to this project. As landlords and cops push Black residents out, wealthy, mostly white neighborhoods like Buckhead demand ever more police intervention to keep them and their ill-gotten wealth safe. With all their militarized training, equipment, and qualified immunity from prosecution, police murder thousands of people per year disproportionately Black, Brown, and Indigenous. This facility will contribute to further militarization and deadly force for police departments across the country to utilize and train in. Although this is most urgently a movement to protect the forest in Atlanta, it is also a national movement to confront the violent system of policing.

A decentralized, autonomous movement has formed in 2021 to stop this project from going forward. There have been a wide diversity of tactics: from working inside of the city- and state-government, organizing petitions and letter writing campaigns, and calling upon investors and contractors to divest from Cop City to more on-the-ground resistance such as encampments and gatherings in the forest itself. There have been a number of armed raids on those occupying the forest by local and state police, most recently culminating in the the murder of 26 year old indigenous medic and activist, Manuel Tortugiita Paez Teran (they-them) by Georgia State Patrol Officer(s).* As activists mourn the loss of Tortuguita, we continue to fight the murderous endeavor that is Cop City with all of the tools that we have. There is a role for everyone to take part in defending the Weelaunee...

SubMedia: Cop City Faces Resistance in Atlanta It's Going Down

Video report from sub.Media on ongoing resistance to the Cop City project in so-called Atlanta, GA.

On March 5th, during the week of action in defense of the Weelaunee Forest and against cop city, activists held forest defense workshops and a music festival attended by over 800 people.

That evening a large crew of forest defenders gathered and marched to the cop city construction site.

Forest defenders torched construction equipment, a police surveillance station, and destroyed barricades intended to keep people out of the forest.

As smoke rose from the smoldering ashes of their new training facility, police locked down the park and began making arrests.

As part of their brutal repression tactics police have handed down domestic terrorism charges to 23 people. You can contribute to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund here: atlsolidarity.org/

We Got Us: A Case Study and Reflections on Supporting an Arrestee from the 2020 Uprisings It's Going Down

Reflection from the Richard Hunsinger Defense Committee about organizing a support committee for an incarcerated activist from the George Floyd uprising.

The Atlanta Community Press Collective (ACPC) received the following submission on 3/3/2023 from a defense committee organizing on behalf of an Atlanta activist who was arrested during the uprisings in summer 2020. In the following statement, the defense committee describes its experience navigating the logistics of organizing a support network, identifying a criminal defense attorney, and streamlining communication between the incarcerated activist and members of the support network outside, among other challenges. The defense committee offers insight on this process to other activists seeking to support in the case of arrest, identifying areas of risk assessment and providing guidance for conducting legal research and establishing operational and digital security. The opinions herein are only reflective of the authors and not ACPC.

Background

In November 2020, our close friend and comrade, Richard Hunsinger, was arrested in a multi-agency raid on charges stemming from his actions while protesting at a federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in Atlanta, Georgia during the George Floyd Uprising. We, the Richard Hunsinger defense committee, began working immediately to support and free him. After two long years, Richard pleaded guilty to one count each of depredation of government property and assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, or interfering with an officer engaged in official duties. Richard was sentenced to 32 months of incarceration after a protracted legal battle.  The government had requested a terrorism enhancement and recommended a sentence of 84 months incarceration, while the probation office had calculated a sentencing guidelines range of 262 to 327 months of incarceration. We are abolitionists and firmly believe that no one should be in a cage for any length of time, but we celebrate that Richard has a much shorter sentence than either recommendation and that the terrorism enhancement wasnt applied.

We believe that we have a responsibility to reflect on our successes and failures. We hope that others on the leftespecially other defense committeeswill find our observations useful for their own work. We also hope to empower people who are interested in the work of prisoner and defendant support to feel like they can take it on. We started with no legal knowledge, just a desire to support an...

The fossil fuel industry is pouring methane into the sky Freethought Blogs

A little while back, I shared the good news that the so-called clathrate gun was apparently no longer a serious cause for concern. I remain happy about that, but unfortunately there are other big sources of methane all tied to fossil fuel extraction that are contributing to climate change in a major way.

More than 1,000 super-emitter sites gushed the potent greenhouse gas methane into the global atmosphere in 2022, the Guardian can reveal, mostly from oil and gas facilities. The worst single leak spewed the pollution at a rate equivalent to 67m running cars.

This is why the focus on individual lifestyle choices has always been a massive red herring, and why I focus more on systemic/societal change. I havent owned a car since late 2009, and any decrease in humanitys emissions from that choice was more than wiped out by the methane coming from any one of those facilities. Do what you can on the individual level, but if we dont chance society, that wont end up mattering. Thats doubly true, because fossil fuel corporations fully intend to extract every drop they can, no matter the harm done to everyone else:

Separate data also reveals 55 methane bombs around the world fossil fuel extraction sites where gas leaks alone from future production would release levels of methane equivalent to 30 years of all US greenhouse gas emissions.

I guarantee you that there are more than 55 places around the world where new extraction is planned, and from which a horrifying amount of methane will leak. These 55 are just the really exceptional ones. Regardless, these findings support the long-standing view that we need to act a lot faster than we have been. The upside is that eliminating or dramatically reducing these emissions should, technically, be pretty easy:

Methane emissions cause 25% of global heating today and there has been a scary surge since 2007, according to scientists. This acceleration may be the biggest threat to keeping below 1.5C of global heating and seriously risks triggering catastrophic climate tipping points, researchers say.

The two new datasets identify the sites most critical to preventing methane-driven disaster, as tackling leaks from fossil fuel sites is the fastest and cheapest way to slash methane emissions. Some leaks are deliberate, venting the unwanted...

In Praise of Inefficiency: Should We Serve the Economy or Should It Serve Us? WhoWhatWhy

Trader Joes VP of marketing, Tara Miller, announced on the stores Inside Trader Joes podcast that they will not be installing self-checkout machines in their stores. Good on them.

The bottom line here is that our people remain our most valued resource, Miller said. While other retailers were cutting staff and adding things like self-checkout, curbside pickup, and outsourcing delivery options, we were hiring more crew, and we continue to do that.

In not using everything available to them to increase efficiency, Trader Joes is very much the outlier in America. Thats because unless regulated capitalism will almost always push for maximum efficiency since thats the fastest way to maximize profits.

Its become a virtual religion among Americas CEO class: Maximize efficiency no matter what it does to customers, communities, or employees. The result has been an explosion of efficiency across the corporate spectrum, leading to monopoly, oligopoly, price-gouging, a crippled small-business sector, staggering profits, devastated downtowns, and even driving todays inflation.

Efficiency, taken to extremes, can be destructive to both consumers and communities.

Think about it. If there are 40 different retail stores in your small town selling a whole variety of things from groceries to books to clothing to hardware, every one of them has to do their own bookkeeping, their own banking, their own inventory and store management, their own staffing and HR.

Its inefficient, but it keeps communities alive and filled with vitality.

When you buy a book from the local bookstore, they deposit those funds in the local bank, which then loans them out as mortgages for local people wanting to buy a house. The bookstore uses their revenues to pay rent to a local landlord and to pay well their local employees, who then spend that money in the locally owned clothing and grocery stores. They, in turn, pay their employees, who go on to patronize other stores in town.

Its a virtuous circle. Money spent in a local economy like this can take months or even years to leave the community, enriching it in multiple ways as it continues to recirculate from business to business, hand to hand.

Nord Stream Explosion: Plenty of Gas, Not Much Light WhoWhatWhy

A small but vocal cohort keeps asking me, Who do you think blew up the Nord Stream, or more often, Why dont you admit the US blew up that pipeline? One fan of hyperbole even wrote to say that certainly the US did it, and called it the worst act of terror in history.

I am well aware of the real possibility that the US was behind the September 26, 2022, explosion. The US has done worse in the past. And certainly, the Biden statement back in February 2022 warning Russia of possible action to shut down the Nord Stream were it to invade Ukraine (see below) provides powerful grist for the mill.

But what really bothers me are all the unwarranted assumptions in this case on the part of many: First, that the US is definitely responsible. Second, that this act is morally equivalent to Russias invasion of Ukraine. Third, that this is a reason to bar further US military aid to Ukraine.

The attack on the natural gas pipeline which happened more than half a year after Russia invaded Ukraine has receded from the news. But with growing GOP pressure to reduce or cut off funding for the defense of Ukraine, the issue will come up again, perhaps as a core piece of the overall debate.

And more people may be receptive to anything that justifies a reduction of funding, and just the general desire to move on. This is exactly what Putin, in my view, fervently hopes will happen, and really the only possible way he wins or even survives politically.

Who Done It?

As a journalist in the agnostic tradition, I believe in being open-minded on the fascinating issue of who done it, and on the equally intriguing question, how do we know?

The US is certainly capable of doing such a thing. However, I dont know that it bombed the Nord Stream, and neither do those who are so certain it did.

Even Seymour Hersh, who ...

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into force in 1994, before marine biodiversity was a well-established concept. The treaty agreement concluded two weeks of talks in New York. The unified agreement treaty, which applies to nearly half the planets surface, was reached late Saturday.

Majora Carter, keynote speaker for the 2023 Strong Towns National Gathering.

Strong Towns is thrilled to welcome urban revitalization strategist, real estate developer, and MacArthur Fellow Majora Carter as the keynote speaker for the inaugural Strong Towns National Gathering.

Born, raised, and continuously residing in the South Bronx, New York, Carters initiatives include pioneering sustainable economic development in her hometown through Sustainable South Bronx, Green for All, StartUp Box, and the Majora Carter Group. In 2017, she opened The Boogie Down Grind, an award-winning third space celebrating hip hop culture, community, and coffee, among other beverages.

Her philosophy, which doubles as the subtitle of her book Reclaiming Your Community, can also be found on the walls of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture:

Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one.

The Strong Towns National Gathering begins the evening of May 30, with events continuing through May 31. Events include conversations with Strong Towns staff and fellow advocates, hands-on workshops, breakout sessions, and success stories from members and local leaders.

We know you get fired up by the stories and issues you encounter at Strong Towns, but its not always clear what to do next. The work of making your neighborhood stronger can often feel lonely, slow, and even discouraging. But you dont have to stay stuck in that feeling. We know that effective advocates dont operate on their own.

Thats why were excited to team up with the...

Biden outmaneuvers Republicans on Social Security and Medicare for now Freethought Blogs

Joe Biden sometimes surprises me. I never had a high opinion of him, seeing him as epitomizing the neoliberal centrism of the political establishment, a caretaker of the status quo and an appeaser of the right wing. My support of him during the last election was driven by my horror at the thought of the lying, grifting, narcissist Donald Trump getting to be president for another four years. But I must admit that Biden has done better than I expected. True, he is no Bernie Sanders when it comes to advancing progressive policies but he has managed to push through some important pieces of legislation in his first two years that have made real improvements in the lives of ordinary people.

A big test is the one that will occur this June or so when failure to raise the debt ceiling will reach a crisis point. Republicans were clearly planning to use that issue as a hostage to obtain cuts in spending. What cuts? They refuse to specify but their target has always been programs that benefit those who are in need. (For a list of the programs that they are likely targeting, see here.) But their main target has always been the Big Three: Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. These programs are expensive but extremely popular and cutting them will cause a backlash. Republicans know this and thus they seek to create a crisis so that cuts to them will be seen as inevitable and have Democrats share at least part of the blame.

But in the opening maneuvers, Biden seems to have gained an advantage. In his State of the Union speech, he needled the Republicans in Congress into loudly opposing cuts in those programs and even after that he continued to pummel them on this issue in speeches, forcing Republican senator Rick Scott, who had proposed sunsetting all programs after five years and requiring them to be reauthorized, to grudgingly backtrack, saying that when he meant all programs he had actually meant to exclude Social Security, Medicare, defense, veterans benefits, and other essential services.

The White House wasted no time in gloating over the reversal.

We congratulate Senator Scott on joining the post-State of the Union red wave of Republicans acknowledging that they have, in fact, been attempting to put Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block. For the past year he has explained the absence of an exception by saying, If its worth keeping, were going to keep it. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement.

But make no mista...

Cobwebs as art Freethought Blogs

Spider webs, especially cobwebs, are so complex that it can get annoying. Theyre also hard to photograph so many thin threads going every which-way in 3 dimensions, its easy to get lost. Ive been gratified lately to find that I can confine spiders to make mostly two-dimensional sheets using a wooden frame in a plastic container (they prefer natural substrates), but I have no illusion that this reflects the sophistication of their natural behavior. Its mainly a good way to get them to pose nicely for me, and to simplify moving them from one place to another.

But some people manage to capture those 3-D webs.

Forget about spider man and his meek two-dimensional webs! Even though spider webs have been around for at least 140 million years, we have never managed to preserve, measure and display their webs in a three dimensional form. Toms Saraceno has opened our eyes to the intricate geometry of spider webs with his newly invented scanning instrument that digitized for the first time a three-dimensional web. In fact, there is no single museum in the world with a collection of this kind. His spider web sculptures are a breakthrough in both science and art, and thanks to his methods and technique he has enabled much needed comparative studies in mathematics, engineering and arachnology, opening new fields of studies.

(Peter Jger, Head of Arachnology, Senckenberg Research Institute, Frankfurt am Main, and co-author of the World Spider Catalog, 2015)

There are lots of pretty pictures at that link. Everybody loves orb webs, but cobwebs are much more intricate and confusing.
