Ukrainian gas executive has Biden bribe recordings US senator "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | June 13, 2023

A Ukrainian gas executive who claimed to have paid bribes to US President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, retained more than a dozen recordings of his conversations with them as an insurance policy, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has said, citing FBI documents.

In a statement published on Monday, the GOP lawmaker urged the Justice Department to release a full, unredacted copy of FBI files that allegedly outline a criminal bribery scheme between the Biden family and Ukrainian energy firm Burisma Holdings. The documents are reportedly based on FBI interviews with a highly credible confidential source who described several interactions with a top Burisma executive starting in 2015, when Biden was serving as vice president.

While the FBI shared the documents with select lawmakers last week, Grassley said key sections had been redacted, including reference that the foreign national who allegedly bribed Joe and Hunter Biden allegedly has audio recordings of his conversations with them. Seventeen total recordings.

The Burisma executive kept the recordings as a sort of insurance policy in case he got into a tight spot, according to the senator, who said he had seen the full documents. He did not indicate what might have been said in the audio, however.

Senator Grassley and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer first highlighted the alleged bribes in May, citing a whistleblower who revealed the FBI was in possession of documents detailing its interviews with the confidential source. The Oversight Committee then subpoenaed the bureau for the records, which were only shared in redacted form last week after lawmakers threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress.

The documents are said to show that the unnamed Burisma executive discussed $5 million payments he allegedly made to both Joe and Hunter Biden during the Barack Obama presidency. Despite having little experience in the energy sector, the younger Biden was employed on Burismas board of directors between 2014 and 2019 and received more than $50,000 per month.

The Burisma official allegedly explained that the company had to pay the Bidens because a Ukrainian prosecutor was investigating the company. While Joe Biden recently dismissed the bribery allegations as a bunch of malarkey, he has acknowledged that he was responsible for the firing of Ukraines top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma and its executives for corruption at the time. Biden said he did so by threatening to withhold US aid, but insists Shokin was replaced for refusing to go after corruption.

New evidence of collaboration of former Slovak Justice Minister tefan Harabin with the Russian Federation "IndyWatch Feed War"

On June 1, 2023, the Special Prosecutors Office of Slovakia charged former Minister of Justice tefan Harabin with extremism for his public support of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. On February 25, 2022, Harabin said he supported the Russian invasion and wrote that if he were Putin, he would have done the same (by the way, in 2019, Harabin ran for president of Slovakia ending up third in the election race).

Pictured: tefan Harabin

On the aforementioned charge alone however, Kharabin faces no more than three years in prison.

In the meantime, Ukrainian hacktivists of the Cyber Resistance team provided InformNapalm volunteer intelligence community with additional facts evidencing that Kharabin might have committed a more serious offense. In particular, that he was recruited by, and worked for, Russian foreign intelligence.

This conclusion may be drawn from some of the letters and documents the hacktivists obtained by hacking e-mails of the so-called Russian Academy of Geopolitical Problems a typical soft power arm of the Russian intelligence serving to help its foreign agents.

For example, we learned from the e-mail below that tefan Harabin was a guest of honor and a speaker at the meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific Council of the Academy held on June 30, 2022. The title of Harabins report clearly shows what it aims to propagate: The rise of fascism in the EU and, in particular, in Ukraine amidst a decline in democracy and human rights.

FLASHBACK: Five things they don't tell you about slavery "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

It didn't begin or end in the United States. The same people most obsessed with slavery seem to have little interest in the full scope of its history. There has been an effort for decades now although with new momentum lately, as exemplified by the New York Times' 1619 project to identify the United States and its founding with slavery. To the extent that this campaign excavates uncomfortable truths about our history and underlines the central role of African Americans in our nation, it is welcome. But it is often intended to undermine the legitimacy of America itself by effacing what makes it distinctive and good. Yes, slavery and racial prejudice were our great original sins. It would have been better if we had, like the British, been leaders against the slave trade and for abolition (the representation of slaveholders in Congress and the rise of King Cotton forestalled this). But we didn't invent slavery, even in its race-based form.

Flash Droughts Are Getting Flashier "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the summer of 2012, a severe drought unexpectedly struck the central United States. The event began in May and rapidly intensified until it peaked in mid-July, when precipitation hit record lows throughout the Midwest, affecting approximately 80 percent of US agricultural land and causing $34.5 billion in losses.

Flash droughts such as this are developing more quickly and happening more frequently because of climate change, according to a recent study published in Science.

Unlike slow droughts, which develop over years, flash droughts arise in a matter of weeks and can last 3045 days (or even years). Because these events are abrupt and relatively localized, they are more difficult to forecast.

People have less time to prepare for [flash droughts].

People have less time to prepare for them, wrote Xing Yuan, a hydroclimatologist at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in Jiangsu, China, and lead author of the study, in an email.

Droughts that come on quickly are especially worrying for regions that are not well adapted, according to climatologist Peili Wu from the Met Office in the United Kingdom, who is a co-author of the study. In the US, I think people are more aware about flash droughts, he said. But in other parts of the world in Europe, for example people are less familiar with this concept.

The predictability of slow droughts, on the other hand, helps communities and governments adapt.

To gauge how flash droughts have changed through time, Yuan and Wu and their colleagues analyzed daily precipitation and evaporation data from different climate reconstructions...

As representatives of the leading oil-producing state, the NDDC Board member urged them to also assist in President Tinubus avowed commitment not to tolerate economic sabotage and his instruction to the security agencies to crush the menace of oil theft, wherever it is coming from.

After 17-Year Absence, White Rhinos Return to the DRC "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) recently welcomed the reintroduction of 16 southern white rhinoceroses to Garamba National Park, according to officials, as Phys.org reported. The last wild northern white rhino was poached there in 2006.

The white rhinos were transported to Garamba, which lies in the northeastern part of the country, from a South African private reserve.

The return of white rhinos to the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a testament to our countrys commitment to biodiversity conservation, said Yves Milan Ngangay, the director general of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN), according to Phys.org.

ICCN led the operation, along with conservation NGO African Parks and Barrick Gold, a Canadian mining company that sponsored the effort.

White rhinoceroses are the second biggest land mammal after the elephant, and adult males can weigh more than 7,700 pounds.

Northern and southern white rhinos were once found in abundance in different parts of Africa and are genetically distinct. The northern white rhino is considered functionally extinct, as only two individuals remain at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, both female. Research is still being done as to whether it can be saved from the brink of extinction. Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, died in 2018.

In the late 19th century, the southern white rhino subspecies was believed to be extinct due to poaching until a population of fewer than 100 was discovered in...

Health Care Workers Who Cover Up Patient Abuse Face Stiffer Penalties Under New Illinois Law "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

This article was produced for ProPublicas Local Reporting Network in partnership with Lee Enterprises, along with Capitol News Illinois. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law on Friday that strengthens the range of penalties that a state watchdog can mete out for health care employees who conspire to hide abuse or interfere with investigations by the state police or internal oversight bodies.

The legislation was introduced following an investigative series by Capitol News Illinois, Lee Enterprises Midwest and ProPublica into rampant abuses and cover-ups at Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center, a state-run institution in southern Illinois that houses people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illnesses. The new law applies to employees at state-run institutions and at privately operated community agencies for people with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses that operate under the oversight of the Illinois Department of Human Services and its Office of the Inspector General.

The news organizations detailed how employees had lied to investigators, leaked sensitive investigative details, retaliated against people who reported abuse and sought to indoctrinate new workers into the cover-up culture. Employees who engaged in such actions made it difficult to pursue cases of patient abuse, yet they rarely faced serious consequences. IDHS Inspector General Peter Neumer suggested the change in law last year.

The new law allows the OIG to report workers who engage in such misconduct to Illinois existing Health Care Worker Registry, which would bar them from working in any health care setting in the state.

The registry identifies any health care worker who has been barred from working with vulnerable populations in any long-term care setting, such as state-operated developmental centers or group homes. Under prior law, workers could be barred because they had been found to have engaged in financial exploitation; neglect that is considered egregious; or phys...

Ethiopias largest community conservation area brings Indigenous communities into the fold "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

ADDIS ABABA Indigenous communities in the Lower Omo River Valley of southwestern Ethiopia have taken ownership and management responsibilities of what is now Ethiopias largest community conservation area, the Tama Community Conservation Area (TCCA). Located in a woody savanna, the development follows the regional government of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) signing the conservation area into law earlier this year. This legislation aims to ensure the sustainable use and preservation of Tamas ecological and cultural heritage by entrusting this duty to the Indigenous communities. The region has seen the construction of the Gilgel Gibe III Dam and the establishment of sugar cane plantations that brought about significant environmental and social impacts, including loss of traditional livelihoods and starvation, according to a report by the think tank Oakland Institute. This is why administrators dont teach "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Academics get constant training it seems like every week or two the university trots out a new module and duns our email with notifications that we are REQUIRED to take it, and if we defer the training to a more convenient time the notifications dont stop. Its a lousy system, but necessary. Its just that the methods are so poor. For example, this article on sexual harassment in science offers up a few criticisms.

Sexual harassment includes forcing people into sexual activity, giving unwanted sexual attention to someone and making unwanted comments or threats to someone based on their gender. The negative effects of sexual harassment also apply to the people who witness it and the organizations involved. The first thing that experts say needs to be overhauled is traditional sexual harassment training.

The computer-based format of some training modules is familiar to anyone starting a new job, including us. We remember laughable scenarios that were, at best, out of touch with how real people behave, or showed only the most extreme examples of harassment. The training was unrealistic, unmemorable and something to click through as fast as we could. Such passive, simplistic training typically fails, as sociologists Frank Dobbin of Harvard University and Alexandra Kalev of Tel Aviv University found in a Harvard Business Review analysis in 2020.

Training needs to be more in-person, according to experts. People can interact with a live instructor who has specialized knowledge of awkward topics and how to talk effectively about them. The trainers can take the backgrounds and ages of people in the group into account, answer questions in real time, and tailor their program to the organization; what people at a nonprofit might need could be different from workers at a big-box store or in an academic setting. And even in academia, training for scientists who work in the field could be different than for those who work in a lab.

This past weekend, after a week of emails telling me I am REQUIRED to take training in Fundamentals of Disability Accommodations and Inclusive Course Design, I did it. It was fundamentally terrible. I am 100% in agreement with the importance of the topic, and I took it very seriously and cleared my calendar and went through this self-paced online program in about an hour and a half. It consisted of a series of simple web pages emphasizing specific points, interspersed with 2-5 minute videos of faculty and students talking about how they solv...

Ukrainian combat vehicle crews surrender to Russia "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | June 13, 2023

The crews of two Ukrainian BMP-1 infantry combat vehicles have surrendered to Russian troops near the Donbass city of Avdeyevka, TASS reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Russian security official.

According to the official, a member of a platoon in Ukraines 110th separate mechanized bridge had radioed Russian troops, requestingmedical assistance for their wounded soldiers after commanders had declined to evacuate his unit.

The Ukrainian officer reportedly asked for safe passage and said that the remainder of his units would surrender with all of their weapons, including two BMP-1s.

Overall, ten soldiers were taken into custody, including some with serious injuries, the Russian official said. The official added that the captured service members were receiving medical aid and were being vetted for complicity in war crimes.

Russian war correspondent Andrey Rudenko posted a video on Monday evening that allegedly showed Russian soldiers detaining the crews of Ukrainian BMP-1s. The uniforms worn by the surrendering soldiers bore markings resembling those used by Ukrainian forces.

Kiev launched its long-anticipated counteroffensive last week, attacking Russian forces in multiple areas along the front line. According to Moscow, Ukrainian troops failed to breach Russian defenses and did not achieve their goals. Several German-made Leopard 2 heavy tanks and US-made M2 Bradley armored vehicles were destroyed or abandoned during the fighting.

White House to Provide Ukraine With Depleted Uranium Tank Shells Reports "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sputnik 13.06.2023

The administration of US President Joe Biden is going to approve the provision of depleted uranium tank munitions to Ukraine, US media reported on Tuesday, citing US officials.

After weeks of internal debated on how to equip the Abrams tanks that the United States has provided to Kiev the White House is expected to agree on the transferring of depleted uranium tank shells to Ukraine, the newspaper said, citing administration sources.

Although some officials say that there are no serious obstacles to approving the shipment of depleted uranium munitions, others express concern that due to the transfer of such shells, Washington could be criticized for providing weapons that pose a danger to human health and the environment, according to the newspaper.

In addition, the White House is still discussing the possibility of providing cluster munitions to Ukraine, among other arms, according to the news outlet.

In late April, UK Deputy Defense Minister James Heappey said that London had sent Kiev thousands of shells for the Challenger 2 main battle tanks it donated, including some with depleted uranium. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the transfer of depleted uranium shells to Ukraine, said that London will have to bear responsibility for the consequences.

Surviving a plane crash "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

More details have emerged about what happened to the four children (aged 13, nine, four, and 11 months) who were rescued 40 days after the plane they were in crashed on May 1 in the Colombian Amazon jungle, killing their mother and two other people.

The mother of the four young Colombian siblings who managed to survive for almost six weeks in the Amazon jungle clung to life for four days after their plane crashed before telling her children to leave her in the hope of improving their chances of being rescued.

A search team found the plane on 16 May in a thick patch of the rainforest and recovered the bodies of the three adults on board but the children were nowhere to be found.

I was reminded about something I used to do with faculty to make them aware of the benefits of using cooperative learning techniques with their students. It consisted of an exercise called Survival in the Desert and involved giving everyone the following scenario. (This exercise was developed by the US military and there were several different scenarios for crashes, the desert being just one.)

It is approximately 10:00 am in mid-August and you have just landed in the Sonora Desert in southwestern United States. The light twin-engine plane, containing the bodies of the pilot and the co-pilot, has completely burned. Only the air frame remains. None of the rest of you has been injured.

The pilot was unable to notify anyone of your position before the crash. However, he had indicated before impact that you were 70 miles south-southwest from a mining camp which is the nearest known habitation, and that you were approximately 65 miles off the course that was filed in your VFR flight plan.

The immediate area is quite flat and except for occasional barrel and saguaro cacti appears to be rather barren. The last weather report indicated the temperature would reach 110F that day, which means that the temperature at ground level will be 130F. You are dressed in light-weight clothing short sleeved shirts, pants, socks and street shoes. Everyone has a handkerchief. Collectively, your pockets contain $2.83 in change, $85.00 in bills, a pack of cigarettes, and a ballpoint pen.

Before the plane caught fire, your group was able to salvage 15 items. Assume that the group has decided to stick together and that all items are in good condition. Your task is to rank these items according to their importance to your survival, starting with 1 as the most important, to 15 as the least important.

The items in the list were the following:

  1. flashlight (4 battery size)
  2. jack knife
  3. sectional air map of the area

Vienna Summit: Anti-War Activists From 32 Countries Call For Diplomacy to End Ukraine War "IndyWatch Feed World"

During the weekend of June 10-11 in Vienna, Austria, over 300 people representing peace organizations from 32 countries came together for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine to demand an end to the fighting. In a formal conference declaration, participants declared, We are a broad and politically diverse coalition that represents peace movements and civil society. We are firmly united in our belief that war is a crime against humanity and there is no military solution to the current crisis.

To amplify their call for a ceasefire, Summit participants committed themselves to organizing Global Weeks of Actionprotests, street vigils and political lobbyingduring the days of September 30-October 8.

Summit organizers chose Austria as the location of the peace conference because Austria is one of only a few neutral non-NATO states left in Europe. Ireland, Switzerland and Malta are a mere handful of neutral European states, now that previously neutral states Finland has joined NATO and Sweden is next in line. Austrias capital, Vienna, is known as UN City, and is also home to the Secretariat of the OSCE (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), which monitored the ceasefire in the Donbas from the signing of the Minsk II agreement in 2015 until the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

We are firmly united in our belief that war is a crime against humanity and there is no military solution to the current crisis.

Surprisingly, neutral Austria turned out to be quite hostile to the Peace Summit. The union federation caved in to pressure from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Austria and other detractors, who smeared the events as a fifth column for the Russian invaders. The ambassador had objected to some of the speakers, including world-renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs and European Union Parliament member Clare Daly.

Even the press club, where the final press conference was scheduled, was canceled at the last minute. The Austrian liberal/left newspaper Der Standard piled on, panning the conference both beforehand, during and afterwards, alleging that the speakers were too pro-Russian. Undaunted, local organizers quickly found other locations. The conference took place in a lovely concert center, and the press conference in a local cafe.

The most moving panel of the conference was the one with representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, who risked their lives to participate in the Summit. Yurii Sheliazhenko, secretary-treasurer of the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, is unable to leave the coun.....

Voting Maps Throughout the Deep South May Be Redrawn After Surprise Supreme Court Ruling "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published.

Election maps across the Deep South are likely to be redrawn because of a surprise Supreme Court ruling that upheld a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, changes that could alter the balance of power that has given Republicans a razor-thin majority in Congress.

The courts 5-4 decision in Allen v. Milligan, written for the majority by Chief Justice John Roberts, affirmed the section of the act that prohibits maps drawn to dilute minority voting strength. It was an unexpected victory for a law passed in 1965, which has been gradually dismantled under the Roberts court.

The Supreme Court is now expected to rule quickly on a similar challenge to election maps pending in Louisiana, which could create another congressional district favorable to Democrats in addition to the one in Alabama.

And a racial gerrymandering case from South Carolina is moving toward oral arguments in October. Republican state leaders appealed a decision from a three-judge federal panel that found illegal targeting of Black voters in a map that gave the GOP control of the states last remaining swing district. If the panels decision is upheld, the Republican-led legislature will have to redraw the lines for the 1st Congressional District.

Republicans won a slim majority in the House in 2022 as legal challenges over redistricting simmered, including the one in Alabama, which the court stayed until after the election. If all of the redistricting challenges were resolved in favor of minority plaintiffs, that could dramatically impact the composition of Congress in 2024. David Wasserman, a senior editor at Cook Political Report, said states creating new majority-min...

Can community payments with no strings attached benefit biodiversity? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Hundreds of millions of people around the world live in spots considered critical for the protection of wildlife. More than three-quarters of these populations exist in less-industrialized countries, where poverty can contribute to the loss of biodiversity in the pursuit of meeting basic needs Recently, in a study in the journal Nature Sustainability published May 18, a team of researchers calculated the cost of providing a conservation basic income (CBI) to the people living around biodiversity-rich parks and reserves or other vital areas for species protection, particularly in low- or middle-income countries. The CBI concept stems from similar proposals for whats known as universal basic income, with the aim of providing a stable source of income and potentially benefiting biodiversity and nature in general. There isnt a lot of research on how effective a CBI or on universal basic incomes, for that matter would be. Where evidence for CBI does exist, it paints a mixed picture. It sometimes benefits the environment but other times leaves habitats worse off. Critically, the money wouldnt have restrictions or conditions, leaving recipients to spend it as they see fit. That freedom provides a more just, more equitable pathway to conservation, as opposed to more traditional measures that are often top-down and impose costs on local people, said lead author Emiel de Lange, an interdisciplinary conservation scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society in Cambodia. Renewables surpass new nuclear reactor in capacity growth: Utility-scale solar and wind outpace Vogtle-3 in Q1 of 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Based upon a review by the SUN DAY Campaign of data recently released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), utility-scale solar and wind have apparently each added more new electrical generating capacity during the first four months of 2023 than the new Vogtle-3 nuclear reactor that just came on-line after nearly 14 years of construction and major cost overruns.

FERC had earlier reported in its monthly Energy Infrastructure Update report for December 2022 that installed U.S. utility-scale solar generating capacity had reached 80,400 megawatts (MW) by the end of last year.

However, in its most recent report, with data through April 30, 2023, FERC cites 85,790-MW of installed solar generating capacity and that does not include new small-scale distributed PV systems. Meanwhile, FERC listed 143,280-MW of installed wind generating capacity at the end of 2022 but, four months later, that figure had been increased to 146,900-MW.

State Hypochondria: UK Covid Inquiry Demands Virus Testing for All Attendees "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

One thing is now certain: after three years of state-issued propaganda and Big Pharma misinformation, the overreaction to the so-called global pandemic by state agencies and mainstream media has induced a near permanent widespread wave of paranoia among a section of the public and members of the states increasingly bloated bureaucracy.

For those completely loyal and compliant to this rolling state of emergency narrative, the COVID-19 pseudo pandemic has made the world seem like a less safe and hostile place to live. This imagined sense of danger and irrational fear of invisible viruses has led people to feel that others around them are a threat. This main fear is the foundation of the whole public health psychological operation surround Covid mass hysteria.

It began just before the initial phase of the alleged pandemic in 2020, and was quickly ramped-up with applied behavioural psychology messaging and coercive tactics which were successful in increasing individuals paranoia and feelings of hypochondria about the mythical asymptomatic spread of the alleged novel coronavirus, thus, causing previously rational behaviours to give way to a much more erratic and reflexive set of responses to what can only be described as an imaginary threat.

This state-induced mental disorder was then compounded by state-mandated mask-wearing and other intimidation tactics. Relentless rebroadcasting of the official state conspiracy narratives caused the more paranoid Covid true believers to endorse the states most outlandish conspiracies about the supposed safety and efficacy of mask-wearing and miracle vaccines all of which turned out to be patently untrue.

Three years later, it seems that fascist elements in the states agencies are still determined to enforce the official science fiction

UK Telegraph reports

The Covid-19 inquiry is demanding that attendees test for the virus more than a year after the Government scrapped lateral flow tests.

Ahead of its first public hearings starting on Tuesday, the...

A database containing data of +8.9 million Zacks users was leaked online "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A database containing the personal information of more than 8.9 million Zacks Investment Research users was leaked on a cybercrime forum.

A database containing personal information of 8,929,503 Zacks Investment Research users emerged on a popular hacking forum on June 10, 2023.

Zacks is the leading investment research firm focusing on stock research, analysis, and recommendations.

The availability of the archive was reported by the data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned, which notified Zecks. According to HIBP, the records in the database contain names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, usernames, and passwords stored as unsalted SHA-256 hashes.

The company attempted to downplay the security breach by telling Have I Been Pwned that threat actors only had access to encrypted passwords.

In January, Zacks Investment Research (Zacks) disclosed a data breach, the company reported that the security incident may have affected the personal information of its 820,000 customers.

The company discovered the intrusion at the end of 2022, it believes the unauthorized access took place sometime between November 2021 and August 2022.

According to the notice, threat actors had access to an older database of customers who had signed up for the Zacks Elite product between November 1999 through February 2005.

At the time, the company added that it had no evidence that financial data has been exposed due to the security incident.

In December 2022, the investment research company Zacks announced a data breach. The following month, reports emerged of the incident impacting 820k customers. However, in June 2023, a corpus of data with almost 9M Zacks customers appeared before being broadly circulated on a popular hacking forum. The most recent data was dated May 2020 and included names, usernames, email and physical addresses, phone numbers and passwords stored as unsalted SHA-256 hashes. reported HIBP. On disclosure of the larger breach, Zacks advised that in addition to their original report the unauthorised third parties also gained access to encrypted [sic] passwords of zacks.com customers, but only in the encrypted [sic] format.

2023-06-12:

Today begins the real reason for the trip:  attending a meeting of the ISO standards committee for the C++ programming language.  Ive been given clear instructions that Im not supposed to write anything about the meeting itself until after it ends on Saturday, so my daily posts will be mostly about the hotel and the area around it.  Ill have a single post on Saturday or Sunday night giving a feel for the kinds of issues we discuss.

07:30+3:

A very nice breakfast buffet is included in my hotel accommodationeggs, sausage, potatoes, fresh fruit, sweet rollsthe usual stuff.  One thing I like about traveling to Europe is having baked beans for breakfast which is unheard of in the U.S.

10:15:

Last night, I had stupidly tried to use a US-style power strip; when I turned it on, I fried it; and the outlet that I plugged my computer into quit working as well.  I reported that to the front desk on my way to the meeting this morning; and I was worried that I had damaged the hotels electrical system in some serious way.  I went back to my room at the morning break to find that the outlet was working again.  I guess all I did was blow a fuse.  (*whew*)

Towards the end of the morning session, I was starting to nod off.  That happened to me during the last meeting in Issaquah as wellI guess Im getting too old for this; and I left about half an hour early and went back to my room for a quick nap.

12:30:

The meeting hosts, chaos and VMWare, are graciously providing a buffet lunch to all the participants.

I didnt see anything in the agendas for the various subgroups about which I might have something interesting to say, so I just went back to my room, took an after-lunch nap, and finally got caught up with my FtB reading.

Im happy to have learned of the deaths of several horrible people, Pat Robertson, Silvio Berlusconi,...

Building the Gravitational Machine "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Building the Gravitational Machine

A friend and I were sitting in a diner some time back talking mostly about old movies (my passion is for black-and-white films from 1927 to the death of Bogart in 1957). Somehow the topic of gravity came up, I suspect because we had homed in on early 50s science fiction films. Anyway, I remember his eyebrows raising when I mentioned how puny a force gravity was. I can understand why. We think about massive objects when we think about gravity, but of course it takes a lot of mass to get a little gravity.

In fact, gravity is some 1038 times weaker than the strong force that holds atomic nuclei together, easily illustrated by pointing out to my friend that I was overcoming an entire planets worth of gravity by lifting the salt shaker on the table. I learned from Greg Matloff and Eugene Malloves The Starflight Handbook that despite Freeman Dysons early interest in using the gravitational force to capture energy from astronomical objects, it was Stanislaw Ulam who first pondered the idea in print.

Now Ulam is an interesting figure, a name that resonates on Centauri Dreams in the context of nuclear pulse propulsion, which he first analyzed as far back as 1947 in a report for Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This grew into the Project Orion concept, with nuclear bombs exploded behind a flat steel plate, the crew protected by the mother of all shock absorbers. Ulams work on gravitational machines, however, analyzed how much energy could be extracted in a three-body system, one of which was a rocket, and what kind of velocities such a rocket could attain.

Image: Stanislaw Ulam (1909-1984), well known for his work on Orion, but also an early analyst of the extraction of gravitational energy.

Freeman Dysons notion, explained in the paper Gravitational Machines that we looked at last week, was to extract energy from a binary star system, as shown in the figure from the paper below. The ever imaginative Dyson, remember, was...

Ukrainian military lost most of the M2 Bradley AFVs that were used in its recent counter-offensive "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ahmed Adel | June 13, 2023

Ukrainian soldiers said that most US-made M2 Bradley armoured vehicles were destroyed during the counter-offensive in the Zaporozhye region. According to AFP, the vehicles were destroyed just outside the small town of Orikhiv.

Of nine vehicles attached to the groups mechanised infantry unit not the only one involved in the battle six were wrecked, three damaged but repairable, and one was unscathed, AFP reported, adding that a Ukrainian soldier said only very small progress was made against the Russian army.

Who would be happy receiving those orders, Go and take those Russian positions which are well protected? a senior officer, who asked not to be identified, said according to AFP.

In early June, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that in the direction of Zaporozhye, Ukrainian troops consisting of 1,500 fighters and 150 armoured vehicles tried to break through Russian defences but lost up to 350 troops and 30 tanks in two hours. The minister stressed that the Ukrainian brigade was stopped in all zones toward Zaporozhye.

With the Ukrainian offensive underway, Kiev has virtually no gains to show. In contrast, images of destroyed Leopard tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles used by Ukrainian troops have circulated on social media. For this reason, several experts have warned about a heavy military defeat for Ukraine and another geopolitical failure for NATO, which again is resorting to intervention in remote territories outside its jurisdiction to achieve its objectives against Russia.

While the US and its allies have generously provided Ukraine with weapons and military vehicles during the current conflict, Ukrainian forces are institutionally and operationally incapable of successfully absorbing the wide and inconsistent array of equipment and weaponry on the battlefield.

Nonetheless, the US and the UK need Ukraine to launch a counteroffensive as they are the main financiers of Kievs escalation but are experiencing growing poverty and economic crises and therefore need to justify to their citizens the vast money sent to Ukraine.

Former Central Intelligence Agency agent and Executive Director of the Council for the National Interest, Philip Giraldi, warned that Western media are trying to make it appear that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is succeeding and that Ukraines forces are encroaching on Russian positions. In this sense, and despite what is happening on the battlefield, Giraldi stressed that US, UK, and German politicians are obliged to speak positively about the situation in Ukraine.

Despite the rhetoric, images of destroyed M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and German-built Leopard 2A6 tanks abandoned and burning on the Ukrainian battlefield, the harsh truth about the futility of defeating Russia is...

The Espionage Act Is Not The Answer To Donald Trump "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The following independent journalism was made possible by paid subscribers. Take advantage of this discount offer and subscribe to Shadowproofs Dissenter Newsletter today.

While the United States Justice Department has increasingly wielded the Espionage Act to make an example out of government employees or contractors, federal prosecutors have been reluctant to charge current and former high-ranking officials. That makes the thirty-one Espionage Act charges against former President Donald Trump stunning.

On June 8, 2023, Trump was accused by prosecutors of unauthorized possession of documents relating to the national defense. He was additionally accused of willfully retaining those documents and failing to turn them over to an officer or employee entitled to receive them.

The alleged offenses fall under 793(e) of the Espionage Act, which has featured in a number of leak prosecutions against whistleblowers and media sources. Of course, Trump is neither. He kept the documents in boxes at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Back on August 10, 2022, days after the FBI raided Trumps estate, I published an analysis of prior cases where the Justice Department had investigated lower-level government employees or contractors for unauthorized possession of information. In big bold letters, I shared it under the headline, Justice Department Unlikely To Charge Trump With Violating The Espionage Act.

I was fairly certain, given the example of General David Petraeus, that Trumps legal team would be able to negotiate with the Justice Department behind closed doors to ensure that he was not charged with violating the Espionage Act. But I was wrong, and now I realize that would have required Trump to concede that he had done something wrong by possessing the classified documents.

Numerous Republicans have lashed out at the Justice Department for indicting Trump, who has a commanding lead in polls for the partys 2024 presidential primary. Republicans contend that the Justice Department has been weaponized against Trump.

Such a response would be easy to flat-out dismiss if it werent for the fact that the Justice Department has been, in one way or another, investigating Trump since 2016.

As Jeff Gerth exhaustively documented for the Columbia Journalism Review, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her campaign secretly sponsored and publicly promoted an unsubstantiated consp...

Understanding the conventional economy of the Pan Amazon "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The economies of nations are traditionally evaluated by their gross domestic product (GDP), a metric that measures the total economic output of a nation. The GDP of the Pan Amazon was approximately $US 270 billion in 2017, a modest number in a global economy valued at $US 80 trillion in the same year. By way of comparison, this is approximately equal to the total income of the online retail company that has appropriated the name of the worlds largest tropical forest. The contribution to national GDP from the jurisdictions located within the Pan Amazon range from a high of 100% (Guyana and Suriname) to a low of 0.2% (French Guiana). The contribution of Amazonian regions to national GDP is small but significant in Brazil (8%), Peru (13%) and Ecuador (10%), less in Colombia (2%), and considerably more in Bolivia (59%), where three major urban centers lie within the Amazon basin. There are numerous problems with using GDP as an analytical metric; nonetheless, it is the most commonly used statistic for evaluating the economy of a nation. The first priority of most governments is to promote economic growth, and their motivation is as simple as it is obvious: an increase in GDP reflects increased wealth, which can be used to reduce poverty; a decrease connotes a recession, which usually means an increase in poverty. Governments, and their advisors in multilateral development institutions, use GDP and its underlying metrics to identify how fiscal policies, such as taxes, subsidies and public investment impactThis article was originally published on Mongabay

The Ballad Of Belgorod: Listing Equipment Losses During The 2023 Russian Incursion Into Russia "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans

A group of Russian insurgents known as the Freedom of Russia Legion, who are aligned with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, crossed the border with Russia's Belgorod Oblast on the 22th of May 2023. The Freedom of Russia Legion, a unit that consists only of Russian volunteers, subsequently announced that it and the Russian Volunteer Corps (a different group reportedly responsible for an incursion into the Bryansk region in March) had secured the village of Kozinka in the Belgorod region, and that its forward detachments had entered the town of Grayvoron.

A Ukrainian official acknowledged that the Freedom of Russia Legion had carried out a cross-border incursion in the area but stressed they were acting independently. [1] Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia's Belgorod region, announced Monday that a ''Ukrainian military sabotage and reconnaissance group'' had entered the regions Grayvoronsky district. ''Russian military forces as well as the border service, the Russian National Guard, and the Federal Security Service, are taking the necessary steps to eliminate the enemy,'' Gladkov vowed on Telegram. Guardian plumbs new depths in evoking Israeli villainy "IndyWatch Feed War"

An analysis by the Guardians Bethan McKernan explored the likely political motivations for Chinas recent foray into the Israeli-Palestinian issue in particular, Beijings efforts to facilitate talks between the parties predicated on a two-state solution.

The only thing notable in the piece (Chinas Palestinian moment is about global standing rather than peace, June 12) was the opening sentence in the following paragraph:

Despite seeming parallels, there is no official Palestinian position on the plight of Chinas persecuted Uyghur people. A delegation of Arab League diplomats visited Xinjiang province last week, a move widely criticised by rights groups as whitewashing Beijings human rights abuses against the Muslim minority.

If, as it seems, McKernan is suggesting parallels between Chinas persecution of the Muslim Uyghurs and Israels treatment of the Palestinians, then this is among the more egregious examples of the outlets moral myopia and abject ignorance weve ever come across.

Lets briefly unpack it.

The Uyghurs are a mostly Muslim, Turkic-speaking ethnic group living in the northwestern region of Xinjiang. Chinas totalitarian regime has, since 2017, engaged in a systematic campaign of cultural genocide an effort to erase entirely the Uyghur traditions, language, faith and ethnic identity.

A Ceasefire and Armistice in the Russia-Ukraine War Will Take Much Longer Than We Want "IndyWatch Feed War"

Tamara Lorenz, Ann Wright, Krista Bluesmith

By Colonel (Ret) Ann Wright, World BEYOND War, June 13, 2023

Negotiations, ceasefires, armistices and peace agreements are as old as wars themselves.

The wars have been studied endlessly, but lessons learned on how to end the wars have generally been ignored by those conducting the worlds latest wars.

To stop the killing in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, people of conscience must do everything we can to make negotiations for a ceasefire become a realityand that was the purpose of the International Summit for Peace in Ukraine held in Vienna, Austria, June 10-11, 2023.  Over 300 persons from 32 countries attended the conference and participated in the robust program to discuss how to create conditions for a ceasefire and ultimately an agreement to stop the killing.   The websites for the International Peace Bureau and the Peace in Ukraine summit were hacked the day after the conference but should be up and running soon.

History Reveals That Negotiations for a Ceasefire, Armistice and Peace take a long time

If history is our guide, negotiations for peace will take weeks, months, or perhaps years, to get Ukraine and its allies to agree on a negotiating strategyand even longer to come to an agreement with Russia after negotiations begin.

Even if all parties, Ukraine, Russia, U.S./NATO, would agree to negotiations tomorrow, and if the talks would ultimately succeed, it could possibly be months or years before the killing would end. Thats why negotiations must begin NOW!

History gives us an important insight into negotiations during a war and what we might expect to end todays extremely dangerous international violence.

THE pension fraud at Sirius was a serious crimes and the perpetrators of the crime have not been punished yet. For context, this is a company that once upon a time sponsored the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for several consecutive years and wasnt reluctant to put GNU logos in its Web site.

Things soured over the years. A decade ago I went to a meeting which helped secure a very important deal for the company. Deciphering The Gospels Proves Jesus Never Existed review: Chapter 9, Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Deciphering the Gospels, by R. G. Price, argues the case for Jesus mythicism, which is the view that Jesus never existed on earth in any real form but was an entirely mythical figure in the same way as Hercules or Dionysus. (The author is not the same person as Robert Price, also a Jesus mythicist author.) Im an atheist who holds the opposing (and mainstream) view that Jesus was originally a human being of the 1st century about whom a later mythology grew up. Im therefore reviewing Prices book to discuss his arguments and my reasons for disagreeing.

The first post in this book review is here. All subsequent posts will be linked at the end of that post as they go up.

Chapter 9: Finding Jesus In Pauls Letters

On to the Pauline epistles. Early in the chapter, Price raises a good question:

Paul definitely thought of Jesus as real; the question is what did real mean to Paul?

Exactly. Arguing over whether Paul believed Jesus was real is misleading. Everyone involved clearly believed Jesus was real, but was this real in the sense that people believed that angels or the Roman pantheon were real? A clearer question for the mythical/historical Jesus debate is whether Paul believed Jesus had lived on earth.

However, theres another important question that Price hasnt addressed; how reliable is Pauls opinion on the subject? Because theres a big problem with that straight out of the gate, which we should address before we look at anything else about Pauls writing. That is therefore what I will look at in this post.

The key passage for looking at Pauls knowledge of the subject is in Galatians 1. Ive highlighted particular lines:

10 Am I now seeking human approval, or Gods approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.11 For I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[b] that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; ...

Top AI interior design tools to decorate your home "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

So I commented on an IKEA story about them using employees to assist in interior design. I commented, Can they use AI, of course knowing people can. AI can augment a regular homeowner into an interior designer.

Here is a list of some helpful AI interior design tools for homeowners who would like to avoid interior designers and decorate their homes on their own.

Home owners, nowadays, spend a sizeable amount of their savings on decorating their homes. Nevertheless, many of them remain averse to hiring interior decorators, as they believe it to be a costly affair. Hence, they take things into their own hands, when it comes to deciding the design of their dream abodes. Today, there are many Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered interior design apps and software that can help the home owners with the interior designing job. Moreover, home owners do not need to be tech-savvy to use these tools.

Teslas Giga Shanghai is a trump card for the EV revolution of Tesla.
Recently, Elon Musk revealed how fast Giga Shanghai could produce a car in just 38 seconds.
So how did that change everything?
The first video includes a ten-minute and five-minute segment of the Model Y leaving the workshop.
And during the 10-minute segment, 16 new cars were completed, which would be 38 seconds per car on average.
7 cars were completed in the following 5-minute segment, translating to an average of 44 seconds per car.

We will not count it to double-check, but the peak rate may be amazingly high. Of course, not necessarily constant and simultaneous for both models.
Based on production and statistics, we can completely believe in the super-fast production speed of Giga Shanghai.

This is the carmakers first Gigafactory outside the United States, with an industrial chain localization rate of more than 95 percent and 99.99 percent of the employees being Chinese.
Especially, Giga Shanghais production and sales volume reached a new record.
This $2 billion US factory produced nearly 300,000 cars in the first half of this year.
Tesla delivered a record high of 77,938 vehicles in China in June, up 177 percent yearly.
Its a big step for Tesla though it has faced unprecedented delays in vehicle production due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions. Giga Shanghai was shut down for over three weeks in April, and no vehicles were exported to other territories.

Tesla says its Giga Shanghai is now the most productive EV factory in the world. It saw a projected annual capacity increase from just 450,000 vehicles to a whopping 750,000 from Q1 to Q2 2022.
Tesla shared: While the Shanghai factory was shut down fully and partially for the majority of Q2, we ended th...

Summer downpour floods streets in Hanoi, Vietnam "IndyWatch Feed World"

A downpour on Monday rendered several areas of Hanoi inundated. Nguyen Trai Street of Thanh Xuan District was 20-40 cm under water, making vehicles unable to traverse it. From 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., rain levels in certain districts reached 66 mm, according to the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage company. It is the second heaviest rain in Hanoi this summer, after the one on June 8. However, the rain only lasted for a short while. Until June 15, Hanoi and northern provinces are forecast to receive widespread rains due to impacts of cold air and high-altitude winds. Rain levels would be between 90-200 mm per session. Low areas might be flooded as a result.

Man's WW2 Codebook Unearths St Erth's 'Best-Kept Secret' "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Man's WW2 codebook unearths St Erth's 'best-kept secret':

Mike Griffiths unearthed the secret existence of the MI6 outstation in St Erth when his late father, Harry Griffiths, left him his code book. He has revealed the role his father and others played in providing intelligence for code-breakers at Bletchley Park. Mr Griffiths said he "couldn't be prouder" of what his father achieved.

The St Erth Radio Security Service Station - which Mr Griffiths said had about 100 employees - was a secret to anyone outside the village, but to those who lived there, it was common knowledge.

"It was quite remarkable," Mr Griffiths said. He added: "I think almost if you like, the boundary of the village, the secret didn't go beyond the boundary of the village."

[...] Mr Griffiths, who lives in Plymouth, said one of the main roles of the station was to listen to the German Secret Service discussing major military campaigns and building a "complete picture of the German war machine".

He said: "At the end of the war, when the German officers were being interrogated, they were staggered by how much the British actually knew. "They knew more about the German war machine than the Germans did themselves - quite staggering."

Harry Griffiths worked at the listening station from 1939 to 1946, when he was in his late twenties. He was recruited because of his aptitude with Morse code.

[...] He described the listening station as "the ears" of Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes, known as the home of the codebreakers.

His son said: "They were being told, home in on this particular agent, wherever they are in Europe, home in on these and find out who they're talking to."

[...] He said his advice to others was to ask their loved ones about their memories while they still could. "I would urge you, if you know somebody who went through the war, sit down with them, make a cup of tea, buy a bun - a saffron bun preferably, talk to them and say 'right actually, what did you do?', because I so wish I'd talked to him about it," Mr Griffiths said, about his late father.

Hacking Headaches: Keeping a Neurostimulator Working "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Weve heard a ton of stories over the years about abandoned technology useful widgets, often cloud-based, that attracted an early and enthusiastic following, only to have the company behind the tech go bankrupt or decide to end operations for business reasons, which effectively bricks hundreds or perhaps millions of otherwise still-usable devices. Now imagine that happening to your brain.

[Markus Mllmann-Bohle] doesnt have to imagine it, because hes living it. [Markus] suffers from chronic cluster headaches, an often debilitating condition that leaves a person with intractable pain. Having lived with these headaches since 1987, and treating them with medications with varying degrees of success, [Markus] was finally delivered from his personal hell by a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) neuromodulator. The device consists of an unpowered stimulator implanted under the cheekbone thats wired into the SPG, a bundle of nerves that supply the sinuses, nasal mucosa, tear glands, and many other structures in the face.

To reverse a cluster headache, [Markus] applies an external transmitter to the side of his face, which powers the implant and directs it to stimulate the SPG with low-fr...

Jordanians in need are not receiving vital financial support due to a World Bank-financed cash transfer programme that relies on unreliable data and a "faulty algorithm" to allocate funds, according to a new report.

While the scheme is intended to tackle poverty it is in fact fuelling social tensions by using arbitrary factors - such as water consumption and the age of family cars - to determine whether people have a right to social security, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a 74-page report published on Tuesday.

Jordan's cash transfer programme, Takaful, applies an algorithm that uses 57 socio-economic indicators to estimate people's income and wealth and then distributes funds to the households this deems to be the poorest.

The report said the programme is "undermined by errors, discriminatory policies, and stereotypes about poverty".

"The World Bank should phase out its financing of poverty-targeting algorithms and prioritise projects that advance universal social protection," Amos Toh, senior technology and human rights researcher at HRW, told Middle East Eye.

Troubling UN Study Shows Misogyny Still Rules the World "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Pervasive gender biases across the globe keep women from achieving equality, restrict their choices and opportunities in life, and therefore harm everybody by denying them the chance to develop their full potential, a troubling new United Nations (UN) report found.

The latest Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) study, which was released on Monday, shows that 25 percent of people believe it is justified for a man to beat his wife. Other misogynistic attitudes are even more widespread.

Nine out of ten people, including women, hold various gender-based biases today, the study found. And that does not just mean in less-developed countries. The index covers 85 percent of the global population or roughly 7 billion people.

These biases hold across regions, income levels and cultures making them a global issue, the report found.

Almost half of all people believe that men are better political leaders, and nearly as many think they make better business executives.

As a result, women are severely underrepresented in leadership positions. Only 10 percent of heads of state or government are women, and they occupy less than one-third of managerial positions in businesses.

Progress has been made in the area of education, which is a key to not only reversing these biases but also shrinking the economic gap between men and women. However, while educational opportunities in many countries are improving for girls and women, that gap persists.

Please Donate to WhoWhatWhy

According to the report, even in the 59 countries where women are now more educated than men, there is still an average gender income gap of 39 percent.

This is one area where change could have a major impact.

An important place to start is recognizing the economic value of unpaid care work. This can be a very effective way of challenging gender norms around how care work is viewed, said Raquel Lagunas, Director of United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) Gender Team. In countries with the highest levels of gender biases against women, it is estimated that women spend over six times as much time as men on unpaid care w...

Patterns, Placemaking, and People: 3 Questions for Observing Your City "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(Source: Unsplash/JustA Guy.)

Earlier this month, I found myself stepping out of a revolving hotel door in Charlotte, North Carolina, turning right, heading up four flights of outdoor stairs, and sitting myself on a bench at the Brooklyn Village light rail station. Back in Waco, Texas, my husband found himself on the receiving end of an enthusiastic string of text messages: Starting the day doing one of my favorite things , followed by a photo of the light rail as it pulled into the station, a description of the various people on board, and, of course, a selfie.

I love public transit and I cannot lie. I had six hours before catching a train to Raleigh to see my mom and I had resolved to dedicate most of that time to one of my favorite activities: wandering and exploring a new city. Without a doubt, this plan was only possible because Charlotte offered various public transit options that freed me from the need to rent a car. I had a few destinations in mind: a French bakery, a vintage clothing store, and a deli where I would grab a sandwich for lunch. Between those destinations, anything could happen!

Well, not really anything. On the surface, I might look like just another tourist or perhaps just a pregnant woman out for a few hours of shopping, but in reality, I was on a serious mission: I was here to see Charlotte, or at least as much of it as I could in the next four hours.

What Do I Mean by See?

Attention is the beginning of devotion.

So goes one of my favorite quotes by the American poet Mary Oliver. Taken from her poem, Wild Geese, Im always amazed at how loaded these six words are with perceptive insight. These are the kinds of words that stick with you long a...

Q&A with Sydney Possuelo, the most prominent specialist in isolated indigenous peoples in Brazil "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Sydney Possuelo was just a teenager when he became close with two men he viewed as national heroes: the Villas-Bas brothers, fundamental figures in the creation of Xingu Indigenous Park, the first registered Indigenous territory in Brazil, founded in 1961. He accompanied them on expeditions into the Brazilian Amazon, also under the influence of the legacy of Cndido Rondon, a military general and sertanista, or specialist in the serto, what was then considered the undeveloped interior regions of Brazil. Rondon at the time also headed what was then known as the Indian Protection Service (SPI) and was an early supporter of establishing the Xingu reserve, which would come into being a few years after his death. Later that decade, in 1967, the National Indian Foundation (Funai, now the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples) was created, in which Possuelo served as a sertanista, one of the official positions then available in the federal agency. In the 1990s, he became president of Funai, and during his tenure helped demarcate more than 100 Indigenous territories throughout Brazil. In his 42 years at Funai, Possuelo created the Department of Isolated Indians, a division dedicated to protecting uncontacted peoples a topic on which he would become the countrys foremost expert. Snowden Warns Todays Surveillance Technology Makes 2013 Look Like Childs Play "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Julia Conley | Common Dreams TRANSCEND Media Service*

We trusted the government not to screw us, said Edward Snowden. But they did. We trusted the tech companies not to take advantage of us. But they did. That is going to happen again, because that is the nature of power.
.

Edward Snowden said in an interview on June 8, 2023 that advances in surveillance technology have made it far easier for government agencies to spy on citizens than it was in 2013, when he first disclosed the broad use of spying by the NSA and other agencies.(Image: Screenshot/Citizenfour)

With this week marking 10 years since whistleblower Edward Snowden disclosed information to journalists about widespread government spying by United States and British agencies, the former National Security Agency contractor on Thursday joined other advocates in warning that the fight for privacy rights, while making several inroads in the past decade, has grown harder due to major changes in technology.

If we think about what we saw in 2013 and the capabilities of governments today, Snowden toldThe Guardian, 2013 seems like childs play.

Snowden said that the advent of commercially available surveillance products such as Ring cameras, Pegasus spyware, and facial recognition technology has posed new dangers.

Does Artificial Intelligence Need a Regulatory UN Watchdog? "IndyWatch Feed War"

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 6 2023 (IPS)* The frighteningly rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have triggered the question: is there a UN role for monitoring and regulating it?
.

Citing a report from the Center for AI Safety, the New York Times reported last week that a group of over 350 AI industry leaders warned that artificial intelligence poses a growing new danger to humanity and should be considered a societal risk on a par with pandemics and nuclear wars.In a statement in its website, OPENAI founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, along with chief executive Sam Altman, say that to regulate the risks of AI systems, there should be an international watchdog, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (a Vienna-based UN agency) that promotes the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Given the possibility of existential risk, we cant just be reactive, they warned in a joint statement last week.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which hosted more than 40 ministers at an groundbreaking online meeting on May 26, said less than 10 per cent of schools and universities follow formal guidance on using wildly popular artificial intelligence (AI) tools, like the chatbot software ChatGPT.

Asked about a UN role in AI, Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the United Nations told IPS UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his report titled Our Common Agenda (OCA) issued in September 2021 promises, to work with Member States to establish an Emergency Platform to respond to complex global crises.

The platform would not be a new permanent or standing body or institution. It would be triggered automatically in crises of sufficient scale and magnitude, regardless of the type or nature of the cr...

Opportunity is where you find it? Demystifying geothermal opportunities and opportunity-making steps "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"

As Queens University prepares to open its new geothermal-heated Business School building, Mark Palmer, Joseph Ireland (QUB) and Orla Hanna (DWF Law) consider if the opening of a geothermal-heated Business School marks a new chapter for sustainable energy in the North.

The leafy hillside and pristine gardens of Riddel Hall at Stranmillis in south Belfast reveal Queens University new Business School building. Nested within a crescent-shaped cluster of woodlands is the new red-bricked building which, at first glance, gives away little that this building could play an important role in our drive to make the country carbon-neutral. Nothing visible suggests a pioneering geothermal energy project looking at the front of the new buildings historical lawn and buxus hedges. Yet under the green lawns are 40 x 125 metre boreholes which are drilled into the Sherwood Sandstone formation with approximately 10km of collector pipework fitted that feeds the ground source heat pump system for the 6500 sq. metre building. The heat is harnessed from within the Sherwood Sandstone formation which runs under large parts of Belfast and elsewhere across the North.

A picture containing sky, outdoor, tree, groundDescription automatically generated
Figure 2 Drilling operations for the 40 x 125m deep wells.

Academic research and also geoscientific survey work by the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) shows that this Sherwood Sandstone formation is an important resource for harnessing and storing renewable heating and cooling. Perhaps what the opening of the new Business School shows is that repurposing and reworking this natural resource for heating (and cooling) networks can be a key piece of the puzzle of how to decarbonise our buildings. We know that in places such as Saclay, a suburb in southwest Paris, the next generation of geothermal district heating networks are being installed.

The geothermal-heated Business School offers many benefits. As Damien Toner, Director of Estates, Queens University Belfast noted, Riddel Hall was a brownfield site used as a former running track and carparks. There was a real opportunity to maximise this new building opportunity from many perspectives ecological, scale, quality and innovation. The Business School is one of the most successful schools in the university. All of these factors were critical in building the business case for investment at Riddel Hall. A visit to the Business School helps to demystify the nature of geoth...

EUIPO Study: 60% of Pirates Also Buy Content From Legal Sources "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

euipoThe European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has published the findings of its 2023 study on European Citizens and Intellectual Property: Perception, Awareness and Behavior.

The study aims to gain a better understanding of European consumers attitudes toward intellectual property and covers physical counterfeit goods and online digital content; our focus here will be on the latter.

Most Europeans Oppose Use of Illegal Content Sources

Given the entertainment industries regular and urgent calls to tackle online piracy, the EUIPO study paints a more positive picture in respect of attitudes towards illegal content.

In general, most Europeans do not support obtaining digital content from illegal sources. The majority disagree with a variety of reasons that are sometimes used to justify this behavior, such as that it is OK if only for personal use (65 % disagree or tend to disagree with this), if the price of the content is too high (72 %), or if the content is not available via a legal source (74 %), the report notes.

euipo-acceptability-2023

In line with most, if not all, studies in recent years, acceptance of piracy decreases with age. While 19% of citizens aged 55-64, and 18% of those aged 65 and over, believe that its acceptable to access content via illegal sources if the price is too high, acceptance rates jump to 41% and 46% in the 25-34 and 15-24 groups, respectively.

Piracy acceptance rates are also higher in the younger age groups when content isnt available from legal sources, reaching 44% among 15 to 24-year-olds. However, the majority of Europeans (80%) say that they prefer to obtain content from legal sources, if an affordable legal option is available.

In that respect, a surprising 69% of respondents consider the quality and range of content to be better than that currently available from illegal platforms.

14% of EU Citizens Pirate, But Not Exclusively

The study found that 43% of Europeans paid to access online content from a legal service in the past 12 months. Just 14% admitted to having used illegal sources during the same period but these arent all hardcore pirates. Of this group, six in every 10 citizens (60%) also purchased content...

California Bill SB 729 seeks to redefine "infertility" to be a status, as opposed to a medical condition. Changing the definition to "a person's inability to reproduce either as an individual or with their partner without medical intervention" would classify gay men as infertile. The bill, which passed the Senate last month, would require insurance companies to cover in-vitro fertilization procedures. With the change in definition, this would also include forcing the firms to cover surrogacy for gay males. Co-author of the bill Sen. Caroline Menjivar (D) said the bill "will ensure that queer couples no longer have to pay more out of pocket to start families than non-queer families." She continued, "This bill is critical to achieving full-lived equality for LGBTQ+ people, as well as advancing well-rounded and comprehensive health care for all Californians."

Almost 30% Increase in Deaths (England and Wales) Compared to Last Year "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Ive just gotten the latest numbers from ONS. About 10 minutes ago ONS released Week 22 numbers for 2023 (15 minutes ago an updated file wasnt there yet).

Notice how this year compares to last year or prior years. 29.5% higher.

Week 22 deaths

Back to work, folks Pandemic is over, according to WHO.

Today in Gemini:

So, some quick advice: Dont get COVID.

I went back to Seattle in the beginning of March, wore a mask the whole time (my partner did not. I think this is important). We got to drop in on Emerald City Comic Con, which was well missed, and I was so happy to be there, and also just walk around the city again. I miss walking around cities.

My partner was sick by the time we were done at ECCC (they did wear a mask there, as we do for conventions). By the time we got home, I had cold-like symptoms. That Tuesday I was fully sick with it.

[...]

Anyway, three months out, I still have a little bit of a cough, and my brain fog has mostly cleared up. I truly believe it could have been so much worse, if I had not gotten vaccines.

Biodegradable Foam Packaging From Rice Crop Waste Produced By An Indian Startup Company "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Brighter World

A Delhi-based engineer was able to successfully design a replacement for polystyrene packaging made out of rice stubble, which are the dead stalks left after the rice season passes in India. The sad part is that millions of tons of these are left to burn each year because it has been rendered useless.

However, they say that out of need comes creativity. The idea came first to mind Mr. Arpit Dhupars young nephew  drew a picture of the world covered in grey skies. He was left dumbstruck because he didnt want the younger generations to have this kind of impression.

In his nephews drawing, he saw that everything else was fine. The grass was green, the sun was yellow, and the mountains were white and brown. However, the sky grey. It suddenly dawned on him that his nephew simply drew what he saw each every year when the rice stubble was burned and the sky was covered in smoke.

We shouldnt live in a world where we have to explain to kids that the sky should be painted blue. It should be a given, he said to The Better India.

Lin order to change the situa...

The Crystal (High Voltage) Method "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Do high voltages affect the resonant frequency of a crystal? Honestly, we never thought about it, but [Joe] did and decided to risk his analyzer to find out. He started with some decidedly old-school crystals like you might have found in a 1960-era Novice rig. Since the crystal is piezoelectric, he wondered if using a high DC voltage to bend the crystal to move the frequency to create a variable crystal oscillator (sometimes called a VXO).

He created a rig to block DC away from the network analyzer and then feed voltage directly across the crystal. The voltage was from an ESD tester that provides over 1000 volts.

Getting a crystal to change much in frequency is difficult, which is why they are useful. So we werent surprised that even at very high voltages, the effect wasnt very large. It did change the frequency, but it just wasnt very much.

At one point, it looked like he might have killed the test equipment. There was a time when letting the smoke out of a network analyzer would have been a costly mistake, but these days the cost isnt that prohibitive. In the end, this experiment probably doesnt produce any practical results. Still, it is interesting, and we always enjoy watching anything that gives us more intuition about the behavior of circuits or, in this case, circuit elements.

If you need a refresher on crystal oscillators, we can help. There are other ways to modif...

UK communications regulator Ofcom hacked with a MOVEit file transfer zero-day "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

UK communications regulator Ofcom suffered a data breach after a Clop ransomware attack exploiting the MOVEit file transfer zero-day.

UKs communications regulator Ofcom disclosed a data breach after a Clop ransomware attack. The threat actors exploited the zero-day flaw (CVE-2023-34362,) in MOVEit file transfer and access the infrastructure of the regulator.

A spokesperson for Ofcom told The Record that the ransomware group had access confidential information which the regulator held on companies it regulates.

A limited amount of information about certain companies we regulate some of it confidential along with personal data of 412 Ofcom employees, was downloaded during the attack, the spokesperson told The Record. We took immediate action to prevent further use of the MOVEit service and to implement the recommended security measures. We also swiftly alerted all affected Ofcom-regulated companies, and we continue to offer support and assistance to our colleagues.

MOVEit Transfer is a managed file transfer that is used by enterprises to securely transfer files using SFTP, SCP, and HTTP-based uploads

The vulnerability is a SQL injection vulnerability, it can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker to gain unauthorized access to MOVEit Transfers database. The vulnerability affects all MOVEit Transfer versions, it doesnt

The Clop ransomware gang (aka Lace Tempest) was credited by Microsoft for the recent campaign that exploits the zero-day vulnerability CVE-2023-34362.

Indonesia looks into tuna farming to boost aquaculture, reduce overfishing "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

LEGIAN, Indonesia Indonesia is developing tuna farming in an effort to boost its aquaculture sector and lift some pressure from the worlds largest marine tuna fisheries. Indonesia catches more tuna than any other country, accounting for about 16% of the worlds total tuna supply. However, intensive fishing of wild tuna from the countrys waters has made the fishery unsustainable, with much of Indonesias fishing grounds in the Pacific and Indian oceans already fully exploited, and many tuna species subject to overfishing. The Indonesian fisheries ministry has over the years rolled out a string of measures to keep tuna production at sustainable levels, including by introducing harvest controls, monitoring certain species in a few fisheries areas, managing the use of fish-aggregating devices, and encouraging the fishers to achieve international-standard sustainability certification. To expand on these measures, the ministry is now looking into establishing tuna farms in the countrys bays. This can be a good thing if we can develop it in Indonesia, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, the fisheries minister, told reporters at a press conference May 24 in Legian, Bali. No more massive tuna catching, but instead, an option is to catch them and then grow them for a certain period and give them high economic added value while also supplying protein demands. A Map of Life Like None Other "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

from this you should catch on to the fact that we are almost blind to a hyper complex web about us that is actually providing for us.

i immediately want to see this approach appled to midwest Ontario which is a successor biome to the retreating ice of hte ICE age.  Is it nearly as rich and diverse.  then as we go further south, just how much improves or not.

These are big questions, but i did not even know enough to ever ask any of it.  you now understand just how huge the ultimate task of terraforming the earth happens to be one square mile at a time.

Theres a psychological phenomenon called pareidolia that Piotr Naskrecki, an entomologist from Harvard University, often thinks about on slow walks around Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. Pareidolia describes an experience when people see a meaningful image in a random visual pattern: faces in a piece of toast, human figures in trees. It has to do with our evolution. In our prehistoric years, humans needed to be prepared for anything hiding in the bushes. Even if a poisonous snake turned out to have been a stick, it was a good idea to have jumped over it. At Gorongosa, Naskrecki harnesses this basic human impulse for science. I let my mind take the reins of my imagination and guide me toward finding things that I normally would have completely missed, he says.
