Schritt 1: Hacker hacken ... WD. Ich erwhne das nicht ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Schritt 1: Hacker hacken ... WD.

Daten rausgetragen, bevor WD was gemerkt hat.

Benutzt hier jemand MSI-Produkte?

Genau weil sowas geradezu zwangslufig passiert.

JPMorgan's Ties to Jeffrey Epstein Were Deeper Than the Bank Has Acknowledged "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

JPMorgan Chase & Co. had ties to Jeffrey Epstein that ran deeper than the bank has acknowledged and extended years beyond when it decided to close the convicted sex offender's accounts. Mary Erdoes, a top lieutenant to Chief Executive Jamie Dimon, made two trips to Epstein's townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side, in 2011 and 2013, when Epstein still was a client of the bank, said the people familiar with the matter. She exchanged dozens of emails with him and discussed sharing with him fees related to a charitable fund the bank was considering launching. John Duffy, who ran JPMorgan's U.S. private bank for the ultrarich, went to Epstein's townhouse for a meeting in April 2013, the people said. One month later, the private bank renewed an authorization allowing Epstein to borrow money against his accounts despite repeated warnings from compliance staffers about his unusual banking practices. Justin Nelson, one of Epstein's bankers at JPMorgan, had about a half-dozen meetings at Epstein's townhouse between 2014 and 2017. He also traveled to Epstein's ranch in New Mexico in 2016. Epstein was convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution in 2008 and forced to register as a sex offender. The new details show that JPMorgan was treating Epstein like a star client after his first conviction and despite repeated warnings from its own employees. And after JPMorgan closed Epstein's accounts, bankers kept meeting with him for years.

Note: One Nation Under Blackmail is a new book by Whitney Webb, an investigative journalist who explores the deep ties between Jeffrey Epstein and US and Israeli Intelligence criminal networks. Epstein had many concerning associations, including with Noam Chomsky as reported in Webb's most recent article. Lab-created bird flu virus accident shows lax oversight of risky 'gain of function' research "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Inside the high-security Influenza Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, two experienced scientists were pulling ferrets out of their HEPA-filtered cages on a Monday in December 2019. Another researcher, still in training, was also in the room to watch and learn. This particular experiment involved exposing the animals to a highly controversial lab-engineered strain of H5N1 avian influenza virus. Scientists had taken an avian influenza virus that was mostly dangerous to birds and manipulated it in ways that potentially increased its threat to humans. The research was supported [by] Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. On that December day, two experienced researchers from Kawaoka's team were helping train a colleague as they collected samples from ferrets. One of their most important pieces of personal protective equipment was the air-purifying respirator that each wore. As one of the senior researchers prepared to start collecting samples from the next round of ferrets, the trainee realized there was a problem with their respirator. The powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) hose had somehow disconnected from the unit. The detached hose dangled loose in the lab's potentially contaminated air. In the end, the trainee apparently didn't become infected. But how the university and the lab oversight system handled the incident should be cause for concern.

Australian government is hit with class action lawsuit over Covid vaccines "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

A landmark Covid-19 vaccine injury class action lawsuit has been filed against the Australian government and the medicines regulator. The nation-wide suit, which reportedly has 500 members including three named applicants, seeks redress for those allegedly left injured or bereaved by the Covid-19 vaccines. One of the applicants who suffered a severe heart condition after getting the Pfizer jab is even claiming there was 'cover-up' during the vaccine rollout which hid the potential risks. The federal government, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Department of Health - in addition to a number of senior public servants - are all named as parties to the class action, which was filed in the New South Wales Federal Court. The named parties are accused of negligence in their approval and monitoring of Covid-19 vaccines, breach of statutory duty and misfeasance in public office. Instructing solicitor Natalie Strijland, of Brisbane law firm NR Barbi, said the action would argue the TGA caused considerable harm and damage by failing to regulate the COVID-19 vaccinations properly. The class action names three applicants, one of whom is 41-year old father-of-two Gareth O'Gradie. Mr O'Gradie, a teacher from Melbourne, was left with a 20-centimetre scar down his chest after developing severe pericarditis inflammation of the lining around the heart following his first Pfizer vaccination in July 2021. In February 2022 doctors performed open heart surgery to remove his the pericardial sac lining his heart.

COVID-19 vaccine claims yield small payouts from U.S. government "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Of more than 8,000 people who filed claims with the federal government alleging injuries from COVID-19 vaccines, three have now received cash payouts, new government data shows. Their combined compensation? Less than $5,000. One person who had an anaphylactic reaction to the shot received $2,020 from the government's Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program, or CICP. Another who got myocarditis an inflammation of the heart muscle from the jab received $1,583, while a second myocarditis sufferer got $1,033, according to the data, which was released last week. A third myocarditis patient's claim was approved but the person was denied compensation due to lack of eligible expenses. The CICP has doled out just three small awards confirms [that] the government program is ill-suited to adjudicate these cases. The no-fault tribunal run by the Health Resources and Services Administration is stymied by statute in the relief it can offer, with compensation limited to unreimbursed medical expenses and up to $50,000 a year in lost wages. A death benefit of up to $422,035 may also be available. There's no allowance for pain and suffering, no punitive damages, no attorneys' fees, no public hearings or opinions, no right to judicial appeal. But it's the only legal recourse available for the unlucky few who have experienced serious adverse effects from the vaccines. The COVID-19 vaccine makers are indemnified by the government and are not party to CICP proceedings.

Note: This article attributes vaccine injuries to the "unlucky few." However, an increasing amount of evidence makes it clear that vaccine injuries are more common than what we're told, as revealed in countless anecdotal stories of those significantly harmed from the vaccine and Pfizer's very own disclosed documents. America only had a handful of billionaires 40 years ago. We're now creating 'centibillionaires'and unless we tax them, trillionaires "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The centibillionaire clubthose with over $100 billion in wealthlikely will be welcoming a new member soon. Forbes now estimates Michael Bloomberg's wealth at $94.5 billion, making him the sixth richest American. If his wealth continues to grow at the rate it's grown since 2013, Michael Bloomberg will join the centibillionaire club by the end of the year. At that point, he will be the 10th American to have reached that wealth level. Forty years ago, the mere billionaire club had just 13 members, and Daniel Ludwig, the richest American at the time, had a total wealth (adjusted for inflation) of $6.15 billion. Today, $1 billion of wealth in one person's hands often means far too much political power, but that astounding amount of money is now considered a rounding error in the context of America's largest fortunes. America's 20 richest billionaires spent more than the entire Biden campaign on the 2020 elections. According to political scientists Jeffrey Winters and Benjamin Page, the political influence of each of the 400 richest Americans is 22,000 times that of the average member of the bottom 90%. What all Americans whose wealth has passed the $100 billion threshold have in common ... is tax avoidance. Between 2013 and 2018, none made federal income tax payments greater than 11% of their wealth growthand all but two paid less than 5%. Even Ronald Reagan recognized that it's "crazy" for a society to tax a bus driver at a higher rate than a millionaire.

Note: The pandemic response sharply increased the wealth of billionaires. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing news articles on income inequality from reliable major media sources.

Lockdowns, school closures and limiting gatherings only reduced COVID mortality by 0.2% at 'enormous economic and social costs', study finds "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The original coronavirus lockdowns had 'little to no' effect on pandemic death tolls in the US, UK and Europe, a controversial report suggests. Economists who carried out a meta-analysis found draconian restrictions imposed in spring 2020 including stay-at-home orders, compulsory masks and social distancing only reduced Covid mortality by 0.2 per cent. They warned that lockdowns caused 'enormous economic and social costs' and concluded they were 'ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument' going forward. The review, led by a Johns Hopkins University professor, argued that border closures had virtually zero effect on Covid mortality, reducing deaths by just 0.1 per cent. There has been a growing consensus that draconian restrictions have led to a rise in non-Covid deaths, thought to be people whose conditions worsened during the pandemic when they could not access healthcare. In the latest report, the researchers admit their review does not answer 'why' lockdowns didn't achieve their ultimate goal in saving lives but they float a number of explanations. They claimed the best explanation for differing Covid death rates in countries was 'differences in population age and health' and the 'quality of the health sector. But they could not rule out 'less obvious factors, such as culture, communication, and coincidences'. Covid deaths are also skewed by the volume of testing each country carries out, which many scientists have highlighted as the driving factor behind Britain's large toll.

3 prominent economists slam COVID lockdowns and school closures and say they should never happen again "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When the COVID outbreak began in early 2020, a number of studies predicted that government-imposed lockdowns would prove highly effective in preventing deaths. A widely cited epidemiological paper by researchers at Imperial College London predicted that such measures as bans on travel and shelter-in-place mandates would reduce mortality from the virus by 98%. But now, a new analysis by three prominent economists that surveys all empirical data from the academic literature measuring the relationship between death and lockdowns finds that forced restrictions didn't work. Their conclusion: Lockdowns reduced mortalities by a minuscule 0.2%. The study defines lockdowns as "compulsory non-pharmaceutical interventions," or what's commonly known as NPIs. They include restrictions on travel, school closures, bans on international travel, restrictions on movement within a country's borders, and mask mandates. The authors note that lockdowns were virtually universal. Of the 186 nations followed by the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, all but one - the Indian Ocean island nation of Comoros - imposed at least one NPI by the end of March 2020. The U.S. paid a huge price in lost jobs, businesses that never reopened, and kids deprived of going to school - not to mention the deep malaise that caused a pandemic of suicides. The world's citizens left to their own devices would have handled the pandemic better, and ... fewer lives would perhaps have been lost with no lockdowns at all.

More than half of humans on track to be overweight or obese by 2035 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

More than half of the world's population will be overweight or obese by 2035 unless governments take decisive action to curb the growing epidemic of excess weight, a report has warned. About 2.6 billion people globally 38% of the world population are already overweight or obese. But on current trends that is expected to rise to more than 4 billion people (51%) in 12 years' time, according to research by the World Obesity Federation. Obesity among children and young people is on course to increase faster than among adults. By 2035 it is expected to be at least double the rate seen in 2020, according to the federation's latest annual World Obesity Atlas report. It is expected to rise by 100% among boys under 18, leaving 208 million affected, but go up even more sharply by 125% among girls the same age, which would see 175 million of them affected. The federation is an alliance of health, scientific, research and campaign groups, and works closely on obesity with various global agencies. It wants governments to use tax systems; restrictions on the marketing of foods that are high in fat, salt or sugar; front-of-pack labels; and provision of healthy food in schools to address rising obesity. The federation's report also highlights that many of the world's poorest countries are facing the sharpest increases in obesity yet are the least well prepared to confront the disease. Nine of the 10 countries set to experience the biggest rises in coming years are low- or middle-income nations in Africa and Asia.

Lockheed Martin Got $106 From the Average Taxpayer, While Renewables Got Just $6 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The average U.S. taxpayer in 2022 spent over four times as much on Pentagon contractors than on primary and secondary education, according to the annual Tax Day analysis published in recent days by the Institute for Policy Studies' National Priorities Project. NPP found that, on average, American taxpayers contributed $1,087 to Pentagon contractors, compared with $270 for K-12 education. The top military contractor Lockheed Martin received $106 from the average taxpayer, while just $6 went to funding renewable energy. According to the analysis, the average 2022 U.S. taxpayer: Paid $74 for nuclear weapons, and just $43 for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Spent $70 on deportations and border control, versus just $19 for refugee assistance; Contributed $20 for federal prisons, and just $11 for anti-homelessness programs; and Gave $298 to the top five military contractors, and just $19 for mental health and substance abuse. "The main message? Our government is continuing to invest too much in the military, and in militarized law enforcement, and not nearly enough on prevention, people, and our communities," NPP said. NPP's analysis comes just over a month after the White House released President Joe Biden's $1.6 trillion budget request for fiscal year 2024. More than half of that amount$886 billion would go to the military.

Will China's Push for Multipolar World End US Global Domination? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

China is taking an increasingly assertive role in world affairs, helping to broker a restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, offering a 12-point peace plan for Ukraine, and strengthening its relationships with European and Latin American powers. Last week, China continued its diplomatic outreach by offering to hold talks between Israel and Palestine. "What China is after, if we view it from China's perspective, is what was also said: true multilateralism. And what that means, or true multipolarity, another term that they use, and that means they don't want a U.S.-led world, they want a multipolar world," [said Jeffrey Sachs at Columbia University]. "And while the United States sometimes talks about a rule-based order, the fact of the matter is that ... the grand strategists of the U.S. state see our grand strategy in the United States as being dominance. Well, China doesn't want the United States to be the preeminent power. It wants to live alongside the United States. But what's very important and interesting to understand, and we've seen it clearly in the dynamics involving the Ukraine war, most of the world also does not want the U.S. as the global preeminent power. Most of the world wants a multipolar world, and is, therefore, not lined up behind the United States' sanctions on Russia and so forth. In fact, the United States is withdrawing ... our politicians are withdrawing from the world financial and monetary scene and opening up the space for a completely different kind of international finance."

Researchers Use Algae to Power a Computer for Months "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

<p style= "text-align: justify; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; margin: 0 0 11pt 0;"> <strong>Researchers have discovered how to use cyanobacteriacommonly called blue-green algaeto continuously power a microprocessor for a span of more than six months. The research was published in the journal <a href= "https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2022/EE/D2EE00233G" target="_blank"><em>Energy & Environmental Science. "We were impressed by how consistently the system worked over a long period of timewe thought it might stop after a few weeks but it just kept going," says Paolo Bombelli, a researcher from the University of Cambridge's Department of Biochemistry and lead author of the paper. The scientists created an enclosure out of aluminum and clear plastic and put the bacteria inside it. The device, which is about the size of a AA battery, was placed on a windowsill in Bombelli's home during Covid-19 lockdown in 2021 and remained there from February to August. The bacteria powered an Arm Cortex M0+ processora microprocessor widely used in the network of appliances connected to the internet, also called the Internet of Things (IoT). The cyanobacteria produced energy even without light, perhaps because they process some of their food in the dark, which generates an electrical current. Several billion IoT devices already exist, and that number is expected to rise to one trillion by 2035. Powering all those devices would require 109,000 tons of lithium, which is three times more than what the world produced in 2017.</p> <p style= "text-align: justify; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; margin: 0 0 11pt 0;"> <strong>Note:</strong> Explore a treasure trove of concise summaries of incredibly <a href= "https://www.wanttoknow.info/inspirationalnewsarticles" target= "_blank">inspiring news articles</a> which will inspire you to make a difference.</p>

Seal's mystery ability to tolerate toxic metal could aid medical research, say scientists "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

One of the world's most isolated aquatic mammals, Arctocephalus philippii, can tolerate high levels of cadmium, as well as other metallic pollutants, without suffering ill effects. A. philippii is the second smallest species of fur seal and lives only on the Juan Fernndez archipelago and one or two nearby islands in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles off the coast of Chile. By the 19th century, the species had disappeared and was believed to be extinct until, in the 1960s, a small colony was found in a cave on the island. Since then, the Juan Fernndez seal, which has become a protected species, has slowly recovered and has a population of around 80,000. "We collected samples of their faeces and found they contained extremely high levels of cadmium and other elements such as mercury," said Constanza Toro-Valdivieso of Cambridge University's conservation research institute. "The discovery was very surprising," she said. "Cadmium is poisonous to mammals but somehow these seals were processing it and passing it through their digestive systems and seem to be suffering little harm in the process." High levels were found not only in its faeces but in the bones of seals that had died of natural causes. The researchers also found high levels of silicon in their bones, which may be offsetting the impact of cadmium, they suggest. "The discovery that these animals appear to tolerate high levels of cadmium in their bodies has important medical implications," said Toro-Valdivieso. "These animals have a lot to tell us."

Botanist Stefano Mancuso: 'You can anaesthetise all plants. This is extremely fascinating' "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Stefano Mancuso is a pioneer in the plant neurobiology movement, which seeks to understand "how plants perceive their circumstances and respond to environmental input in an integrated fashion". Mancuso teaches at the University of Florence, his alma mater, where he runs the International Laboratory of Plant Neurobiology. He has written five bestselling books on plants. "Communication means you are able to emit a message and there is something able to receive it, and in this sense plants are great communicators. If you are unable to move, if you are rooted, it's of paramount importance for you to communicate a lot," [said Mancuso]. "Plants are obliged to communicate a lot, and they use different systems. The most important is through volatiles, or chemicals that are emitted in the atmosphere and received by other plants. It's an extremely sophisticated form of communication, a kind of vocabulary. Every single molecule means something, and they mix very different molecules to send a specific message. My approach to studying consciousness in plants ... started by seeing if they were sensitive to anaesthetics and found that you can anaesthetise all plants by using the same anaesthetics that work in humans. This is extremely fascinating. We were thinking that consciousness was something related to the brain, but I think that both consciousness and intelligence are more embodied, relating to the entire body."

A Literate Assembly Language "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A recent edition of [Babbages] The Chip Letter discusses the obscurity of assembly language. He points out, and I think correctly, that assembly language is more often read than written, yet nearly all of them are hampered by obscurity left over from the days when punched cards had 80 columns and a six-letter symbol was all you could manage in the limited memory space of the computer. For example,  without looking it up, what does the ARM instruction FJCVTZS do? The instructions full name is Floating-point Javascript Convert to Signed Fixed-point Rounding Towards Zero. Not super helpful.

But it did occur to me that nothing is stopping you from writing a literate assembler that is made to be easier to read. First, most C compilers will accept some sort of asm statement, and you could probably manage that with compile-time string construction and macros. However, I think there is a better possibility.

Planting Seeds of Hope: Zero Plant Extinction Is Possible, Ecologist Says (Maria)

The author writes, Like animals, many plant species are struggling to adapt to a human-dominated planet. However, plants are often overlooked in conservation efforts, even though they are cheaper and easier to protect than animals and play a pivotal role in bolstering our food, fuel, and medical systems. In a review published on May 2 in the journal Trends in Plant Science, a plant ecologist suggests an approach for preventing all future land plant extinctions. There is no technical reason why any known plant species should go extinct, writes plant ecologist Richard T. Corlett of the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in Yunnan, China. If zero extinction is potentially achievable for plants, a less ambitious target would be inexcusable.

Imagen (CC BY) Gibrn Aquino

Dust Nourishes Phytoplankton, Boosting Oceans Ability to Store Carbon, Study Finds "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Dust, tiny particles of everything from skin tissue to microplastics, lifted by the wind to settle on a table, the fur of an Arctic fox or the surface of the ocean. Dust is something seen by humans as an annoyance to be wiped away or a pollutant to avoid inhaling, but it also plays a nourishing role in global ocean ecosystems.

New research led by Toby Westberry, an oceanographer at Oregon State University (OSU), explores dusts part in helping to sustain marine life while also regulating carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

The study, Atmospheric nourishment of global ocean ecosystems, was published in the journal Science.

It has long been understood by scientists that phytoplankton plantlike organisms that are the foundation of the marine food web and reside in the upper reaches of the ocean depend on land-based dust for essential nutrients, a press release from OSU said.

Over the vast open ocean, vital nutrients for phytoplankton growth in the sunlit surface layer are largely provided through physical transport from deep waters, but some nutrients are also provided through atmospheric deposition of desert dust, the studys authors wrote.

It has been difficult for researchers to come up with a global estimate of how much marine species rely on dust particles from soil and other sources brought to them by the wind and that also affect the planets climate.

This is really the first time it has been shown, using the modern observational record and at the global scale, that the nutrients carried by dust being deposited on the ocean are creating a response in the surface ocean biology, Westberry said in the press release.

Phytoplankton play an important role in the carbon cycle by turning atmospheric carbon dioxide that dissolves in surface ocean waters into organic matte...

Erick Rojas: nawan, tejedor y curandero "IndyWatch Feed Noramerica"

State of Geothermal Energy "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

"Remind me that the most fertile lands were built by the fires of volcanoes." -- Andrea Gibson, The Madness Vase.

Ninety-two (92) percent of Kenya's electricity comes from renewable resources. About 50 percent of all that is covered by the 5 geothermal power stations at Olkaria, near Hell's Gate National Park. That park is just a tiny part of the thousands of miles long East African Rift System, where the Indian, Arabian and African continental plates meet.

The big advantage of geothermal power is that it produces a steady base load of electricity -- currently 5GW at Olkaria, with an estimated total 10GW potential.

That has aroused the interest of the German government, co-investors and providers of technical expertise for the project. The potential for geothermal power in Germany, through deep (miles deep) drilling is estimated at a quarter of the country's heating needs: before 2030, at least 100 geothermal power projects should be in place.

Geothermal energy projects, however, are capital intensive -- the Olkaria project actually started getting steam in the 90s, mainly supported by the Japanese government and the United Nations Development Programme; Germany has been coinvesting for the last 20 years, alongside with the European Investment Bank. Besides, utility-scale solar and onshore wind is hovering at around &dollar35 per MWh, while geothermal currently is slotted around &dollar70 per MWh.

However, solar and wind are intermittent sources of energy: if you want to buy reliability, nuclear or coal- and gas-fired plants are your comparison. In an April 2023 comparison, investment bank Lazard comes to an estimated cost, unsubsidized, between &dollar68 and &dollar166 per MWh for coal, &dollar141 and &dollar221 for nuclear, and &dollar61 to &dollar102 per MWh for geothermal energy. Only gas-combined-cycle power generation could potentially be cheaper (&dollar39 to &dollar101 per MWh), for providing base load (see page 2 in the pdf).

Over 24,000 people evacuated from Alberta after more than 100 wildfires rage across region "IndyWatch Feed World"

Almost 25,000 people who live in the Canadian province of Alberta have been evacuated as wildfires rage across the region, which is seeing abnormally hot weather and high winds, emergency officials said Saturday. There are at least 103 wildfires burning across the western province, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said at a news briefing. "Much of Alberta has been experiencing a hot, dry spring and with so much kindling, all it takes is a few sparks to ignite some truly frightening wildfires," Smith said. "These conditions mean it is very easy for a wildfire to both start and spread quickly." The result is the "unprecedented situation our province is facing today," she said.

Trkiye wont toe Western line on Russia sanctions FM "IndyWatch Feed War"

RT | May 8, 2023

Ankara has no plans to support the Western economic restrictions against Russia, foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu insisted in an interview on Monday.

Trkiyes top diplomat made the comments to the Lider Haber TV channel in the run-up to the countrys presidential and parliamentary elections, due to take place on Sunday.

We are not going to join the unilateral sanctions imposed against Russia by the US and the EU. Our own benefit and prosperity come first, Cavusoglu explained, as quoted by the TASS news agency.

The minister also criticized the opposition presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who has said he would give priority to developing ties with the West. According to Cavusoglu, the rival to incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has shown himself to be inconsistent in his statements; at one rally, Kilicdaroglu reportedly said that nothing would endanger the relationship between Trkiye and Russia.

Reports emerged in March of Trkiye blocking some transit shipments destined for Russia, in response to recent pledges by Brussels and Washington to enforce anti-Russian sanctions and to stop the supply of sanctioned products via third parties. Trkiyes Ministry of Trade provided no official confirmation of the move. It was later reported that Ankara had resumed the transit to Russia of some sanctioned goods of European origin.

The EU has repeatedly voiced concern about the countrys refusal to participate in Western sanctions against Russia, and accused the Middle Eastern state of becoming a transit hub for Russia, thus enabling the economic blockade to be circumvented.

Ankara is one of Moscows main trading partners, with both sides having pledged to deepen economic cooperation and expand bilateral trade.

Last year, Trkiye and Russia signed a roadmap for economic cooperation that envisages bringing bilateral trade turnover to $100 billion a year. The two have also agreed to introduce the Russian ruble as a settlement currency for bilateral trade, including for Russian natural-gas supply.

Data shows that, around this time last year, Trkiye became one of the top five exporters to Russia. In 2021, it ranked 11th, ahead of the US, France, Japan, Poland and Italy.

Why the US Is Arming Morocco and Working to Combat Russian Influence in Algeria "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

The United States government is deeply entrenched in fuelling an arms race between Morocco and Algeria, as the New Cold War opens another front in Northern Africa, the feud threatens a devastating conflict. The war in Ukraine has only exacerbated the crisis.

Algeria has announced that its ties with Morocco have reached the point of no return, as their rival neighbor sets up a half billion dollar deal for American artillery missile systems. Pitted in the middle of a US-China race to secure control over key trade routes in Northern Africa, with Washington also working to combat Moscows influence in the Sahel and repel Beijings Belt and Road Initiative, the neighborly feud could pose a major threat to regional stability.

Back in August 2021, Algeria officially severed diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Morocco, citing a large number of concerns it had with its North African neighbor. This included accusations of meddling in Algerian affairs, helping to plot terrorist attacks and disrespecting unilateral agreements, in addition to concerns over Moroccos ties with Israel.

That November, tensions again escalated as three Algerians were killed in alleged drone strikes against clearly marked trucks along Mauritanias border with the disputed Western Sahara region. The attack was described as barbaric by Algerian State-media and came only one day after Algerias President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, ended his nations gas supply contract with Rabat.

Tensions between Morocco and Algeria date back as far as 1963, to the brief conflict known as the Sand War; a battle that erupted over the Algerian Tindouf and Bchar provinces, which the Moroccan monarchy viewed as rightfully its own. The land border between both sides has also been closed since 1994. The ideological rivalry between the two States is also deep-seated, as Morocco sided with the West during the Cold War, while Algeria backed Global South liberation struggles and sided with the non-aligned movement.

Although the two North African nations are pitted against each other due to a number of domestic, ideological and regional disputes, the influence of foreign powers and their geo-strategic agendas are....

Die Jim Crow Records Releases New Music From Hip-Hop Artist Wrongfully Convicted And Imprisoned For 25 Years "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Die Jim Crow Records, the first record company to work exclusively with musicians impacted by the United States prison system, has collaborated with another formerly incarcerated artist named EL BENTLY 448.

Wrongfully convicted, EL BENTLY 448, who is also known as Leon Benson, spent 25 years in an Indiana prison. Ten of those years were spent in solitary confinement. He was released on March 8, 2023, after he was exonerated.

Shadowproof is honored to debut Innocent, a hip-hop track from Leons forthcoming EP that will be available on June 26. (Another track, Mugabe, was shared on April 26.)

Leon told Shadowproof, I was innocent, but I wasnt an innocent person. He recorded the track to explore this idea of being innocent, but born guilty.

Youre innocent born guilty if youre born a different gender than somebody, if youre born to a particular racial group, if youre born in a particular time, in a particular location, in a particular economic status, or under a particular religion or culture, Leon described.

Leon added, If you look at it, nobody had a choice of coming to the world. So when you come into the world, we are already made guilty by the powers that be in our life.

The lyrics for the track are autobiographical in the first verse. The second verse questions thos who may believe that they are somehow more innocent than anyone who has been incarcerated.

Leon wrote the track in 2012 while he was in solitary confinement. He hoped the track would help him bring awareness to his case so that he could be exonerated.

As Leon recalled, he took that solitary cell that was meant for sensory deprivation, a torture chamber, and he transformed it into a university, a place that I had to heal, learn, [and] grow.

Thats where I got over a lot of anger because it was a place that I knew was meant for me to smother in, and even go crazy, Leon shared.

Fury Young founded Die Jim Crow in 2019. In 2014, Fury connected with Leon after an activist named Zulay Velasquez shared an announcement on the Facebook group for the Innocence Network that indicated Die Jim Crow was looking for artists.

Id never heard from someone in prison directly before (via cell phone) so we had a long uninterrupted conversation a couple hours later, Fury shared. We instantly hit it off, bonding about certain philosophy shit and world history. Then we continued to build!

The Indiana Department of Corrections denied Die Jim Crow access to record music with Leon at least twice. So Leon found a way that he could record without them while he was in prison.

For incarcerated musicians like Leon, making music is a form of healing justice.......

After Sri Lanka, Nepal debates exporting its problematic monkeys "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

KATHMANDU As the crowing of a rooster signals the break of dawn in Taplejung in eastern Nepal, two men grab their slingshots and head out to work. They know they have a long day ahead of them, guarding the orange trees from the hungry monkeys that roam the forests. These staffers at the orange research center in Taplejung arent alone in their struggle. Across Nepals central hill country, thousands of farmers face the same problem: troops of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), accustomed to human food, enter their fields, leaving behind a trail of destruction and exasperated farmers. Sometimes we feel that we are farming not to feed ourselves, we are doing it for the monkeys, says Ram Prasad Timsina from Pokhara. They are not afraid to attack us if they find us alone. Fed up with the monkeys, everyone from farmers to government officials at the municipal through to national levels have long been looking for quick-fix solutions to the issue. Then recent reports emerged from another South Asian country, Sri Lanka, thats also dealing with crop-raiding macaques. That countrys agriculture minister announced the proposed export of 100,000 toque macaques (Macaca sinica) to China in a bid to control their population. While the government in Colombo said the monkeys would be sent to zoos in China, animal rights activists and environmentalists raised concerns they would be used for medical research or killed for food. Hackaday Prize 2023: The Realities of The Homework Machine "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

For those outside the world of education, it can be hard to judge the impact that ChatGPT has had on homework assignments. If you didnt know, the first challenge of the 2023 Hackaday Prize is focused on improving education. [Devadath P R] decided that the best way to help teachers and teaching culture was to confront them head-on with our new reality by building the homework machine.

The goal of the machine is to be able to stick in any worksheet or assignment and have it write out the answers in your own handwriting, and so far, the results are pretty impressive. There are already pen holder tools for 3D printers, but they often have a few drawbacks. Existing tools often take quite a while to generate G-Code for long pages of text. Hobby servos to lift the pen up and down take more wear than youd expect as a single page has thousands of actuations. Vibrations are also a problem as they are a dead giveaway that the text was not human-written. [Devadath] created a small Python GUI to record their particular handwriting style on a graphics tablet and used ChatGPT to gene...

A Solar Farm Connects Directly to the UK Grid for the First Time "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

On May 4, the first photovoltaic solar farm to connect directly to the UKs National Grid transmission network went online.

Larks Green is a 200-acre solar farm located on the Severn Vale next to the hamlet of Itchington, to the north of Bristol, and with the addition of a big battery energy storage facility, its being heralded as a game-changer in creating a future where solar power is a consistent supplier of much of Britains electricity.

The 50 MW solar farm is owned and operated by Cero Generation and Enso Energy and was connected to the National Grids Iron Acton substation.

This startup uses AI to design EV batteries that are 300% better "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A startup called Chemix is using AI to move faster. Inside a San Francisco Bay Area lab, glowing machineswhich look a little like servers in a data centerphysically test different battery chemistries. Then the companys software platform, called Mix, uses the data to help design new versions for testing, speeding up the cycle of iteration.

Its suggesting new molecules for us to test on a daily basis, says cofounder and CEO Kaixiang Lin, who previously worked on battery design as a doctoral student at Harvard, a postdoc at Stanford, and at another battery startup. We call it battery R&D on autopilot, because theres very little human intervention in this process.

It takes the system about six months, he says, to design new batteries that can beat the performance of existing batteries on the market by an average of 300%.

Using nanopore single-molecule sensing to identify glycans "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Glycans perform varied and crucial functions in numerous cellular activities. The diverse roles of glycans are matched by their highly complex structures, which derive from differences in composition, branching, regio-and stereochemistry, and modification. This incomparable structural diversity is challenging to the structural analysis of glycans.

Recently, a joint research group led by Prof. Qing Guangyan and Prof. Liang Xinmiao from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has developed a identification method based on single-molecule sensing through a glycan derivatization strategy. The study was published in Nature Communications on March 28.

Identifying and sequencing glycans using nanopore single-molecule techniques has sparked interest; however, it has achieved little progress over the past dozen years. Only a handful of cases that focused on either high molecular weight polysaccharides or some monosaccharides were reported.

Bloomberg Wants The West To Punish African States Over Their Preferred Security Partners "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

BY ANDREW KORYBKO | MAY 8, 2023

Bloombergs demand for the West to punish African states over their preferred security partners is extremely condescending. Opinion columnist Bobby Ghosh published a piece about this over the weekend urging to Make Russias Wagner Group a Pariah in Africa, to which end hes lobbying for the US and EU to designate it as a terrorist organization so that its clients there can then be sanctioned. This suggests that the West knows whats better for African states security than their own governments do.

According to Ghosh, Wagner is only useful for reinforc[ing] military rule in despot[ic] states and disproportionately targeting civilians in its anti-terrorist operations. In exchange, it supposedly bleeds local partners dry by extracting their resources. He thus predicts that The arrival of fresh legions of Wagner mercenaries in Africa will make it harder for the West to nudge military governments back toward democracy, and to prevent democratic governments from going in the other direction.

The reality is altogether different as could have been expected considering how often Mainstream Media...

Can China Rebuff NATOs Courtship of Japan? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Western military bloc is reportedly opening its first office in Japan as the US pushes bloc confrontation politics into the region

By Timur Fomenko

Japan is reportedly planning to open a NATO liaison office in Tokyo. The office will be the first of its kind in Asia, and is designated to coordinate with the alliance on security matters, and on the issue of China.

It is no secret that the US seeks to expand and institutionalize the military alliance into Asia and place its footprint on a global scale, a notion that has been encouraged by the conflict in Ukraine, and called for by many senior Western figures. This shows that the organization has long discarded its original purpose, and has become a tool of hegemony and domination, far from the so-called defensive alliance that it once claimed to be, over one specific geographic area of the globe.

The administration of US President Joe Biden is arguably the most militarily aggressive US presidency in decades, even more so than the George W. Bush presidency given the circumstances. Biden has ramped up tensions with larger powers, as opposed to merely conducting smaller regime change operations after the horrors of 9/11. In doing so, Biden has aggressively sought to expand alliances such as NATO, creating new mechanisms such as AUKUS, brought Europe to the brink of war with Russia, and is going to place new nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula. While the previous president, Donald Trump, sought to downsize NATO and make it more financially self-reliant, the Biden administration is unapologetically attempting to globalize it.

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was once designed as a mechanism for collective regional self-defence amongst a fragile post-World War II Western Europe, which was equal in power to the Warsaw...

One of the most prominent drug smugglers in Syria has been killed by a suspected Jordanian air strike, according to a UK-based war monitor.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday that Marai al-Ramthan, his wife and six children, were killed in a Jordanian air force strike in the Sweida province of southern Syria, near the border with Jordan

Ramthan is considered to be the most prominent drug trafficker in the region, and the number one smuggler of drugs, including Captagon, into Jordan, the Observatory said.

The war monitor condemned the killing of Ramthans wife and children, stating that it was unjust under any pretext.

Jordan has neither confirmed nor denied carrying out the air strike.

UN: World Food Prices Are On the Rise Again "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ROME The United Nations food agencys world price index rose in April for the first time in a year, but is still some 20% down on a record high hit in March 2022 following Russias invasion of Ukraine.

The Food and Agriculture Organizations (FAO) price index, which tracks the most globally traded food commodities, averaged 127.2 points last month against 126.5 for March, the agency said on Friday. The March reading was originally given as 126.9.

The Rome-based agency said the April rise reflected higher prices for sugar, meat and rice, which offset declines in the cereals, dairy and vegetable oil price indices.

As economies recover from significant slowdowns, demand will increase, exerting upward pressure on food prices, said FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero.

The sugar price index surged 17.6% from March, hitting its highest level since October 2011. FAO said the rise was linked to concerns of tighter supplies following downward revisions to production forecasts for India and China, along with lo...

The Bicycle (and More) Explained "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but an animation, then, must be worth a million. Make that animation interactive, and well, we dont know how many words it is worth, but it is plenty! Thats the idea behind [Bartosz Ciechanowskis] blog where he uses clever interactive animations to explain the surprisingly complex physics of riding a bicycle.

The first animation lets you view a rider from any angle and control the riders pose. Later ones show you how forces act on the rider and bicycle, starting with example wooden boxes and working back up to the original bike rider with force vectors visible. As you move the rider or the bike, the arrows show you the direction and magnitude of force.

You eventually graduate to close-ups of the tires, the handlebars, and the sprocket. These kinds of animations are to physics what an oscilloscope is to electronics. You dont have to have a scope to understand electronics, but it sure does help.

Once you are done with the bike and thats going to take some time click on Archives and see similar posts on mechanical watches, GPS, internal combustion engines, and more. Really great stuff.

There was a time when beautiful educational animations were very expensive to create. They are easier now, but we still dont see them as often as wed l...

The Practical Impossibility of Large-Scale Carbon Capture and Storage "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Steve Goreham | MasterResource | May 2, 2023

CCS has been slow to take off due to the cost of capture and the limited salability of carbon dioxide as a product. Thirty-nine CCS facilities capture CO2 around the world today, totaling 45 million tons per year, or about one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of industrial emissions produced globally.

The Environmental Protection Agency is working on a new rule that would set stringent limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from US power plants. Utilities would be required to retrofit existing plants with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology or to switch to hydrogen fuel. Others call for the use of CCS to decarbonize heavy industry. But the cost of capture and the amount of CO2 that proponents say needs to be captured crush any ideas about feasibility.

Carbon capture and storage is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial plant before it enters the atmosphere, transporting it, and storing it for centuries to millennia. Capture may be accomplished by filtering it from combustion exhaust streams. Pipelines are proposed to transport the captured CO2. Underground reservoirs could be used for storage. For the last two decades, advocates have proposed CCS to reduce emissions from coal plants and steel, chemical, and other hard-to-decarbonize industries in order to fight human-caused climate change.

Of these, 20 reside in the US or Canada, six in Europe, and five in China. Twenty-four of these facilities use captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery. Captured CO2 is injected into oil wells to boost oil output,

The news from these facilities is mixed. Many are not meeting their carbon-capture goals or are incurring costs well over budget. Nevertheless, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the US, and nations of Europe now offer billions in direct subsidies or tax breaks to firms for capture of CO2 emissions and to build pipelines and storage. Over 300 large and small capture projects are...

Can African Farmers Still Feed the World? "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Human Wrongs Watch

ROME, May 8 2023 (IPS)* Less than a decade ago, Africa was home to 60-65% of the worlds uncultivated arable land and 10% of renewable freshwater resources, as reported by the African Union in 2016, while concluding that African farmers could feed the world.

Is it still the case?

Droughts are a growing threat to global food production, particularly in Africa. Credit: Busani Bafana/IPS

Droughts are a growing threat to global food production, particularly in Africa. Credit: Busani Bafana/IPS

The above data had been provided in July 2016 by the NEPAD (New Partnership for Africas Development), the technical body of the African Union (AU).

Now that seven long years have elapsed, the second largest continent on Earth after Asia has been facing too many extraneous pressures and hazards.

A major consequence is that that very percentage (60-65%) of the worlds uncultivated and arable land is now affected by degradation, with nearly three million hectares of forest lost every single year.

Great walls

The steadily advancing degradation and desertification of major African regions have led the continent to build great green walls.

One of them the Great Green Wall, is the largest living structure on the Planet, one that stretches over 8.000 kilometres across Africa, aiming at restoring the continents degraded landscapes and transforming millions of lives in the Sahel, and ushering in a new era of sustainability and economic growth.

The calendar may not have ticked over yet, but the wintry weather has arrived and forecasters say the frosty conditions are far from over. Large parts of southern-eastern Australia were plunged into freezing conditions on the weekend, as icy air from Antarctica was pushed across the eastern states by a strong cold front. The strong winds disrupted flights in Sydney, while people from New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania took to social media to share photos of the swathes of hail and snow blanketing the streets and mountain tops.

The problem with horse racing "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As a spectator sport, the appeal of horse racing mystifies me. A race lasts just a few minutes and unless one is gambling on the outcome, it is not clear why one should care about which horse wins. There does not seem to be that much skill involved as far as I can tell, apart from the way that jockeys position and pace their horses during the race. It is the horses that do most of the work. The fact that jockeys beat the horses with a crop to make them go faster bothers me since it seems so cruel. But it is clear that horse racing has great appeal for many people who will go to considerable trouble and expense to attend events in person.

My ignorance of the appeal of horse racing is irrelevant since people find engaging all manner of activities that others find mystifying. What really bothers me are the deaths of horses at these events. I knew that horses sometimes fall during a race or during practice and injure their legs and then are euthanized. But I had not known how common that was until I saw this news item that said that seven horses had to be euthanized in the last few days during the lead up to the Kentucky Derby yesterday.

Two more horses died in the hours before Mage crossed the finish line first in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, making it seven in all and casting a shadow over the 149th edition of the worlds most famous race.

The string of horse deaths cast a pall for some Derby-goers on a mostly cloudy and warm day.

Its concerning, and I hope theyre quickly trying the best they can to correct whatevers going on, said Michael Freeze, who along with his friend dressed up as jockeys. They need to do whatever is best for the horses, and the sport in general.

Chloes Dream got hurt in the second race Saturday. The horse was taken off in an equine ambulance with a right front knee injury and was euthanized, trainer Jeff Hiles confirmed to The Associated Press.

In 2019, over 30 horse deaths occurred at Californias Santa Anita racetrack, rattling the industry and leading to safety reforms. Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Rick Dutrow had his license revoked in 2011 for 10 years by New York officials. Regulators found syringes loaded with unauthorized medication in a desk in his barn. Dutrow re-opened his stable last month.

That such deaths are not rare can be seen by the fact that major racetracks have systems in place whereby if a horse falls, they immediately rush out and surround the horse with a curtain so that no spectator can see them being euthanized and taken off the track

It is common nowadays, thanks to the efforts of animal welfare groups, that makers of films and other entertainments that feature animals are obliged to take preca...

Israeli settlers damaged more than 5,000 trees in Palestinian villages across the occupied West Bank in the last five months.

UN data shows that 4,000 trees were damaged in 84 incidents between 20 December 2022 and the end of April.

Another 1,150 trees were vandalised in the last week, according to figures compiled by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz

Palestinian farmers and their lands are a target of repeated attacks by Israeli settlers, which include physical assault, vandalism and theft, especially during harvest seasons, according to the UN.

Almost half of the Palestinian agricultural lands are planted with an estimated 10 million olive trees in the West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip.

What are we to think when governments make every effort to keep their actions secret from their own citizens? We can only conclude that although they may call themselves democracies, such governments are in fact oligarchies or dictatorships.

In a democracy, the citizens must control the actions of their government. If they are unable to do so because those actions are secret, then...

You Can Build This Raspberry Pi-Powered, 4G Linux Phone "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Introducing OURphonean open-source DIY smartphone made with our favorite SBC:

It's easy to build your own desktop PC but, if you want a phone, you usually have to settle for a sealed box that's made by one of a handful of large corporations. Maker Evan Robison wants to change all that as he posted instructions for an open-source, Raspberry Pi-powered called OURPhone with the acronym OURS standing for Open-source, Upgradable, Repairable Smartphone.

According to Robinson, the idea was to create a smartphone alternative for people looking to control their privacy. He also wanted to make a smartphone that could be easily modified and repaired, so an open-source solution was the perfect fit. The OURphone project has quite a few specs that you'll find on many smartphones including 4G LTE internet support, GPS support, Bluetooth and WiFi capability, as well as basic phone operations like the ability to call, text and save contacts in an address book.

However, instead of running on Android or iOS, the phone uses Raspberry Pi OS, the Linux-based native operating system for Raspberry Pis. This means that you have very fine control over what software you run on it, but the UI (as pictured) is not particularly touch or phone friendly. You can find all of the code used in the project (as well as detailed instructions) at GitHub.

In his build guide, Robinson is using a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ but there's no reason you couldn't upgrade it to a Pi 4. It's accompanied by a 4G HAT with GSM and GPS antennas. It has a Waveshare touchscreen for video output and user input. A camera can be attached but it isn't necessary for the build. A pair of headphones with a built-in microphone is used for call support. To keep the unit mobile, it operates off of a couple of 18650 batteries.

The housing, [m]ade out of 3mm MDF board, is a bit bulky but necessary to contain all of the hardware. It's laser cut with port access made available all around the edges.

Chronolocation: Determining When a Photo was Taken Using Facebook, Google Street View and Assorted Tiny Details "IndyWatch Feed War"

How can open source investigators determine when a photograph or video was taken?

Observing the length of shadows visible in an image or clip and employing tools like Suncalc offers one useful method.

But this process of chronolocation determining when a picture was taken rather than just where (which is known as geolocation)   isnt always feasible. For a start, it has to be daytime and there must be a shadow cast somewhere in the video or image of interest.

If these options arent available, looking for other clues in a source image that can be cross-referenced with contextual reference images or other related information can also help narrow down a date range.

Bellingcat has used such chronolocation techniques to determine when undated photos in a museum archive were taken and to find out when a Czech politicians son (who claimed to be kidnapped) had been photographed

Clues to look for in a source image may include:

  • Buildings (especially their faades)
  • Construction sites
  • Storefronts (similar to buildings but might be even more useful as this changes more frequently).
  • Seasonal indicators such as weather, foliage etc.
  • Natural landmarks
  • Clock towers
  • Public transport stops, bus lines etc.
  • Graffiti and murals
  • Banners
  • Advertisements

Essentially, any aspect of a source image could be of use, provided that it has changed over time. Sometimes clues will be so obvious that its possible to immediately figure out the rough date of the source image from one detail alone.

This picture taken in front of CitiField, a baseball stadium in New York that serves as the home of the New York Mets, offers an example.

Jerry Springer: Ringmaster of Civilizations End "IndyWatch Feed War"

It involved bringing out the irregular or peculiar from societys peripheries at least as popularly perceived at the time. Granted a national, broadcasting stage, various persons of despair would perform, if only for a spectacular, brief moment. Cue the chants of a studio audience and the threat of physical confrontation. And the late Jerry Springer, former news reporter and Cincinnati mayor, would be there, willing to market the performance and throw these samples of humanity upon screen and audience. Before the idea of incendiary, vapid reality television, there was The Jerry Springer Show.

It all began on the fifth-floor studio at Cincinnati, Ohios WLWT in September 1991. Initially, the program was fed by a tepid mainstream, with audiences to match. Topics included the big if often skirted around issues in the social Darwinian world of US culture: poverty, inequality, gun control. Put another way, these were topics that might fail to garner the ratings, inducing a vast yawn of boredom. It did not take long for Springer to shed the chrysalis of journalism.

By December 1997, a staff reporter for the Cincinnati Post would write that Springer had found himself top of the trash heap, even as others came and went. He had discovered the formula of lived experience, drawing upon the endless well of antagonism offered by his guests. It was one that did not align with the defenders of boredom, those like Pamela Paul, who claim that it teaches us that life isnt a parade of amusements.

When Springer toured Tampa with his parade of amusements in the first half of 1998, Nielsen Media Research had already noted his popularity on the television set in the Tampa Bay area: delicious for him at least ratings of 140,000, up from 70,000, hardly a bad return given the 1.4 million homes in the Tampa-St. Petersburg TV market (Tampa Tribune, Mar 28, 1998).

The show arguably became so successful it began to become parodic, its own mirror of human caricature. It offered a platform for the pre-social media confessionals, with Springer being the interlocutor and medium. Participants hit an extra note in efforts to reach the depths of outrageous authenticity. The man who married a horse; the woman inclined to self-trepanation.

A feature of this was the frisson of violence, the spine-tingling sense that someone, on set, would get the living daylights kicked out of them. The issue of violence became a matter of some debate. It led the owner of The Jerry Springer Show, Studios USA, to vow in May 1998 that it would eliminate it on the show.

Springer thought differently. The fans will determine what the show is, he told an audience at a Beverly Hills shopping centre during a promotions tour. Besides, he coyly explained, Were still trying to figure it out. What constitutes a fight? Is it going......

A vote of no confidence "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

Although calling for the cancellation of Nigerias February elections is counterintuitive, the truth is that they were marred by fraud, voter suppression, technical glitches and vote-buying.

alt
Photo by Eiseke Bolaji on Unsplash.

On Wednesday, March 1, one week after Nigerias presidential elections, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu declared Bola Tinubu as the winner. Representing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu garnered a total of 8,794,726 votes, or about 35 percent of the whole. Tinubu defeated his two main rivals: Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 6,984,520 votes, or about 29 percent; and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who received 6,101,533 votes, or about 25 percent.

The three leading candidates won in one-third of the states (twelve states each). But the twelfth for Obi was the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). This election tells the essential truth about Nigerian electionsno hegemonic party can emerge in a credible election. This was the situation in all of Nigerias founding republican elections in 1959, 1979, and 1999. Following these elections, the ruling parties abused their powers of incumbency. They made themselves hegemonic in subsequent elections through rigging.

Those dismissing the 2023 election and calling for its cancellation are doing a great disservice. They are doing a disservice to the efforts made by political parties and citizens to disrupt the powers of incumbency and reestablish the truth of Nigerias electoral geography. The victories by opposition parties in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, among others, show this.

The second truth about Nigerian elections is that there is always a variable level of fraud. This can upturn outcomes in a number of constituencies. Nigerians are politically perceptive, and they see it. The story of rigging would normally be the defining narrative of every election. It would be so even if there is insufficient evidence to show that in spite of rigging, the overall outcome would have been different.

The 2007 election is notorious for being one of the most heavily rigged elections in Nigerian history. But there is no evidence that Buhari would have defeated General Olusegun Obasanjo (elected president from 1999 until 2009) had the election been free and fair. 2007 is also the main example in which the organization of electoral fraud...

Doubling Down: Japans Military Donations "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans

After decades of bidding for peace, Japan is now once more preparing for the possibility of war, for the first time truly introducing offensive capabilities to the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and installing long-range anti-ship missiles on islands near Taiwan. Despite its post-Cold War hopes of diplomatically resolving its territorial conflicts, it now finds itself perched at the edge of an increasingly assertive China and Russia (which still occupies four of Japan's southernmost Kuril Islands) and a nuclear-capable North Korea. As part of its attempts to strengthen its military posture, Japan is also seeking to increase the capabilities of Asian countries against Chinese interference and enhance sea surveillance, most notably the Philippines and Malaysia.

Though this support has so far remained limited to the donation of unarmed patrol craft, trainer aircraft and non-lethal equipment, Japan is looking for additional ways to up its contributions amid legislative changes that finally allow Japan to export military equipment abroad. The Philippines was the first nation to purchase military equipment from Japan, acquiring two 96m-long patrol vessels and several air surveillance radars in 2020. Japan subsequently pledged 210 million to enhance the maintenance capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard to service these vessels. [1] The Philippines has already been the recipient of ten 44m-long patrol craft whose construction was funded by the Japanese government and five ex-JSDF Beechcraft King Air TC-90 twin-engine aircraft, and is set to receive a number of UH-1J helicopters in 2023 or 2024. Vietnam has similarly been the recipient of Japanese aid, receiving six fishery patrol vessels in 2016 and 2018. In September 2021, both countries signed an agreement that allows Japan to give defence equipment and technology to Vietnam as the two countries gradually step up their military cooperation. [2]

Lets pretend humans are single-celled organisms "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ive noticed a strange new dogma: sex is defined by the size of your gametes. Youre either making big ones or little ones (or none at all, but lets ignore that, because were trying to invent a binary distinction), and some people plop down some simplistic claim, like that women produce large gametes, as if it is definitive and absolute. Other people are noticing this phenomenon.

There are those, politicians, pundits and even a few scientists, who maintain that whether our bodies make ova or sperm are all we need to know about sex. They assert that men and women are defined by their production of these gamete cells, making them a distinct biological binary pair, and that our legal rights and social possibilities should flow from this divide. Men are men. Women are women. Simple.

Its stupid. Its the new arbitrary definition to replace the Y chromosome excuse, and its got all the failings of any attempt to reduce a complex biological process to a single phrase.

For humans, sex is dynamic, biological, cultural and enmeshed in feedback cycles with our environments, ecologies and multiple physiological and social processes.

So when someone states that An organisms sex is defined by the type of gamete (sperm or ova) it has the function of producing and argues that legal and social policy should be rooted in properties of bodies, they are not really talking about gametes and sex biology. They are arguing for a specific political, and discriminatory, definition of what is natural and right for humans based on a false representation of biology. Over the past few centuries this process of misrepresentation of biology was, and still is, used to deny women rights and to justify legal and societal misogyny and inequity, to justify slavery, racialization, racism and to enforce multiple forms of discrimination and bias. Today dishonest ascriptions of what biology is are being deployed to restrict womens bodily autonomy, target LGBTQIA+ individuals broadly and, most recently, attack the rights of transexual and transgender people.

Its embarrassing that there are actual scientists, biologists even, who dismiss all the complexity of post-zygotic development to shrink people down to nothing more than their gametes. Its the new fad, though. Were just going to have to wait this out as the bigots adopt yet another arbitrary definition to rationalize their weird-ass idiotic biases.

Lets see the logical concl...

WI vs WW3 Wisconsin Against World War Three "IndyWatch Feed War"

By World BEYOND War, May 8, 2023

On Saturday, May 6, 2023, the Madison for a World BEYOND War chapter took part in the WI vs WW3 demonstration at the Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin to oppose current U.S. foreign policy towards Russia and China, which puts us firmly on the path to global conflict. A third world war pitting the U.S. against Russia and/or China is expected to feature the use of nuclear weapons, which is well understood to mean the deaths of billions of people.

WI vs WW3 is a big-tent organization, which includes representatives from the Peoples Party, the Libertarian Party, the Milwaukee End The Wars Coalition, and various other organizations. The organizers do not believe that this is the time to gatekeep the peace movement; no other issues matter if we fail to avoid World War Three. What unites us is a common belief in ending this chain of escalation before it ends us.

WI vs WW3s demands are:

1. No more U.S. money or military involvement for war in Ukraine.

2. De-escalate tensions with Russia and negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine.

3. No military conflict with China over Taiwan or any other issue.

4. Re-enter nuclear non-proliferation and safety agreements.

5. Reallocate excess Pentagon funding to our needs at home.

6. Protect journalists as they inform the public on these issues.

Settler Leo Dee and the Blood-Stained Israeli Consensus "IndyWatch Feed World"

Occupied Palestine When Leo Dee, a bereaved Jewish Settler from Efrat, spoke after the death of his wife and two daughters, he spoke about right and wrong, about making the world a better place. He said one must never blame the victim and support the perpetrators of terrorism. About ten years ago, he made the decision to move his family from the UK to occupied Palestine to a vicious, racist supremacist settlement in the West Bank called Efrat.

Efrat sits on the road between Bethlehem and Hebron. It was built on Palestinian land in an area filled with Palestinian towns and villages and known for its wonderful, fertile land and breathtaking views. Grapevines and olive groves adorn the landscape, while settlements and the presence of the military have destroyed the pastoral atmosphere and turned that entire region of Palestine into a tense and hostile one.

Leo Dee, a British national, has given a great many interviews about the death of his wife and two daughters. He recently spoke about his love for Palestinians, how he has neighbors he respects, and even said he knows that most Palestinians are good people. However, none of that has driven him to condemn Israeli attacks on Gaza, the ethnic cleansing that goes on all over Jerusalem, the desecration of al-Aqsa or the torture by Israel of Palestinian children.

He talks about community and making the world a better place, and he condemns the people who killed his wife and daughters and demands the rest of the world do the same. One cannot imagine the pain he must be going through. At the same time, he has no right to condemn anyone. He has no right to speak of right and wrong, good and bad.
