Steven Mithen: Denisovans meet Neanderthals "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Sometimes the surprise is in discovering just how much we dont know. In 2008 a bone from a childs little finger was found in Denisova Cave in the Atlai Mountains of Siberia. Few other bones were found and it was therefore unclear whether the finger bone came from a modern human or from a Neanderthal; whats more, the deposits were mixed up, and it wasnt clear how, or if, the bones were associated with the stone artefacts also found in the cave. In the days before DNA analysis, Denisova Cave would have been just another archaeological site, with little new to tell us. But in the event part of the finger bone was sent to Svante Pbos laboratory, and our knowledge of human evolution changed for ever.

Die Bundesregierung will jetzt doch endlich zurckhacken.

New Strzok-Page texts reveal others were leaking like mad in lead up to Trump-Russia probe "IndyWatch Feed War"

New text messages between ex-FBI employees Peter Strzok and Lisa Page reveal others were leaking like mad in the run-up to the Trump-Russia collusion probe, according to new communications between the former lovers obtained exclusively by Fox News.

A lengthy exchange dated Dec. 15, 2016 appears to reveal a potential leak operation for political purposes.

Oh, remind me to tell you tomorrow about the times doing a story about the rnc hacks, Page texted Strzok.

And more than they already did? I told you Quinn told me they pulling out all the stops on some story Strzok replied.

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, closeup

Ex-FBI lawyer Lisa Page and fired FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok exchanged anti-Trump text messages.  (AP)

A source told Fox News Quinn could be referring to Richard Quinn, who served as the chief of the Media and Investigative Publicity Section in the Office of Public Affairs. Quinn could not be reached for comment.

Strzok again replied: Think our sisters have begun leaking like mad. Scorned and worried, and political, theyre kicking into overdrive.

In one passage, Strzok apparently misreads a reference to rnc as mc, and then, realizing his error, blames old man eyes.

It is unclear at this point to whom Strzok was referring when he used the term sisters.

Think our sisters have begun leaking like mad. Scorned and worried, and political, theyre kicking into overdrive.

Peter Strzok to Lisa Page

Retired FBI special agent and former FBI national spokesman John Iannarelli told Fox News it could be a reference to another government agency.

Sisters is an odd phrase to use, Iannarelli told Fox News Wednesday. It could be any intelligence agency or any other federal law enforcement agency. The FBI works with all of them because, post 9/11, its all about cooperation and sharing.

There are 17 agencies in the Intelligence Community, including the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Security Agency, and the FBI.

The leaking like mad text came on the same day that several news outlets reported that U.S. intelligen...

Making a point "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

When the good news about unemployment falling and wages outstripping the cost of living broke yesterday I wondered how BBC One's News at Ten would report it and whether they'd use it to make an anti-Brexit point. Well, even I was surprised at how quickly that anti-Brexit point came last night:
Huw Edwards: Wages grew faster than expected in the three months to July, as they continue to outstrip the cost of living for the fourth month in succession. Official data shows that pay, excluding bonuses, rose by 2.9% during the period, while unemployment has continued to fall, remaining at its lowest level for over 40 years, Our economics correspondent, Andy Verity, reports.
Andy Verity: The firm that runs this construction site in Salford has no shortage of work. But a shortage of skilled workers is a growing problem. Until this year, its subcontractors could find the staff they needed easily, mostly from the rest of the European Union.
Ged Rooney, Bardsley Construction: We've got Albanians working on here now but the dry liners, joiners, tilers tend to be Eastern European. So, in some instances, when they leave, it gets very, very difficult to entice the British workforce back on to the sites.
Is that a record?

Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,

Who steals my purse steals trash; tis something, nothing;

But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed.

Its more than disconcerting to hear the blathering now, September 2018, about Jeff Bezos. About Amazon dot com as richest company ever. To hear the fawning love of the rich guy, now, when we were predicting a slave master killing publishing, killing independence; news reports and tribute after tribute for this full-fledged Midas of tax cheating, our homegrown monopolist of the highest order, anti-American who gives a shit about main street America, a misanthropic fake news purveyor, a full-bore felonious PT Barnum and smoke and mirrors double shuffle guy who thinks of his tens upon tens of thousands of warehouse workers as spindles, interchangeable parts, and to hell with their precarity, their one nose-bleed from homelessness.

This is a time of same sides of the coin of the realm: the conservative and the liberal, the War-Mongering Democratic Party drooling at the McCain fiasco and the Sycophantic Zio-Christo Republicans confused about who is going to own what while scampering away like rats into the alleys as the headlights of their narcissist-in-chief blowtorches the world.

The most important characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are grandiosity, seeking excessive admiration, and a lack of empathy. These identifying features can result in a negative impact on an individuals interpersonal affairs and life general. In most cases, on the exterior, these patients act with an air of right and control, dismissing others, and frequently showcasing condescending or denigrating attitudes. Nevertheless, internally, these patients battle with strong feelings of low self esteem issues and inadequacy. Even though the typical NPD patient may achieve great achievements, ultimately their functioning in society can be affected as these characteristics interfere with both personal and professional relationships. A large part of this is as result of the NPD patient being incapable of receiving disapproval or rebuff of any kind, in addition to the fact that the NPD patient typically exhibits lack of empathy and overall disrespect for others.**

Students bury #Shell during promo talk by CEO Shell #Netherlands at the University of #Amsterdam "IndyWatch Feed War"

Students bury Shell during promotion speech by CEO Shell Netherlands at the UvA Amsterdam on the  12th of  September 2018.

Originally published by Indymedia NL.

Note: Enough is Enough is not organizing any of these events, we are publishing this text for people across the US and Europe to be able to see what is going on and for documentation only.

Today, the promotion speech by the CEO of Shell Netherlands, Marjan van Loon, at an event at the University of Amsterdam was disrupted by a game of bullshit Bingo. Students distributed Bingo cards with collect all well-known green lies that climate criminal Shell uses to greenwash their industry for years. In recognizing well-known child marketing soundbites from the fossil industry, hands went up and Bingo was called into the audience.

When after some consternation the attention had just been regained back to the stage, several students with helmets and vests arrived with a huge pipeline into the hall. Mind the pipeline they shouted through the room.

With this action, the campaigners underlined the forgotten elephant in the room: that Shell is still investing a meager 2.5% in green branch of its business, while it continues on a killer-course of fossil-capital addiction, destroys habitats and homes with its extractivism, violates local communities and increases climate disruption with catastrophic consequences. Anyone who thought the show was finished was wrong. Halfway through the derailed sales pitch of Marjan van Loon, students dropped banners from the balustrade of the hall with the text Tax Shell, not the public sector #dividend tax and Invest in education, not in fossil fuels .

The message of the students is that there are many reasons to protest against Shell, but that in the context of the University of Amsterdam where the shell-marketing spectacle is facilitated, one should not forget that Dutch politicians who work more for multinationals than the people have led companies such as Shell to receive continuous taxbreak and subsidies gifts of which the 2,000,000,000 euro dividend tax abolition is the last striking example. Meanwhile Dutch education has suffered greatly from being put on sale by the Dutch state for years. With the soon to be imposed two billion tax break, politics could make the public domain and education stronger. The students state: If we would also look at the 7 billion tax avoidance that Shell has done in recent years and the 7.6 billi...

To engage or not to engage with racists? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

If you blinked, you might have missed the media flutter about the New Yorker magazine reversing its decision to invite Stephen Bannon, one-time Svengali to Donald Trump, to be interviewed at its festival. The reversal was caused because editor David Remnick received a lot of criticism and pressure, with other invited celebrities such as Judd Apatow and Jim Carrey saying they would not attend if Bannon was there. Of course, this has resulted in the usual right-wing whining about the intolerant left, that they are being de-platformed and denied the chance to voice their views.

Remnick issued a lengthy statement explaining why he invited Bannon and then reversed course, which did not satisfy anyone, In it, Remnick defended the invitation by saying that Bannon was a newsworthy person and that it was necessary to engage with people of having different views. But it is clear that the event that Bannon was invited to was unlikely to result in a tough interview because it was not your standard interview setting, with the reporter and subject going one-one. The whole festival is more like a party. Matt Taibbi explains that while interviewing Bannon could be a worthwhile exercise, this was not the place.

The whole idea of a New Yorker Festival is an abomination that no working journalist could be involved in without puking. I had to have it explained to me twice. Its basically a horrifically overpriced intellectual amusement park, where you get to pay $79 to watch Andy Borowitz genuflect before Adam Schiff, and another $79 to watch Jeffrey Toobin do the same with Sally Yates probably talking all about Trump, of course, which is ironic, because for $79, you can attend a panel called Trump, Inc. that stars Felix Sater and Michael Avenatti talking about the man and his money. A lunch tour with Calvin Trillin costs you $249, while making sense of the madness with poor Chris Hayes is a bleacher seat at $59.

A bunch of people agreeing with each other, over food. As even New Yorker staffer Malcolm Gladwell noted, thats not an ideas festival, its a dinner party.

Its a naked money-suck and an admirably transparent effort to turn Manhattanite Trump anxiety into lots of cash. In this context, the recruitment of the hated Bannon as one of these overpriced bearded-lady booths feels a lot less like journalism and a lot more like a particularly revolting new form of commerce.

As a reporter, I absolutely want to interview Steve Bannon. Ive got questions about a lot of the stuff in the Wolff book, and then also about how he conned reporters li...

Maxine Waters goes on Trump impeachment tear, vows to get him Then go after Pence. Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr weigh in "IndyWatch Feed War"

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters escalated her rhetorical assault on President Trump over the weekend vowing to get him and repeating the word impeachment over and over.

Waters, who took heat earlier this year for urging her supporters to confront Trump administration officials in public, told a group gathered in Los Angeles that some Democratic leaders have asked her to stop talking about impeaching Trump.

Theres a difference in how some of our leadership talk about how we should handle all of this, Water said. They say, Maxine, please dont say impeachment anymore.

And when they say that, I say impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment.

In video posted by The American Mirror, Waters said she wakes up in the middle of the night and all I can think about is Im going to get him, in reference to Trump.

The California congresswoman, who was accepting an award from the Stonewall Young Democrats on Saturday, has been one of the most outspoken congressional Democrats calling for impeachment. While many in party leadership have shied away from those demands, Waters and her allies are emboldened by the prospect of Democrats retaking the House in the midterms and, potentially, using a majority to launch impeachment proceedings.

In June, Waters made controversial comments amid the backlash over the White Houses zero-tolerance immigration policy leading to family separations at the border.

If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them and you tell them theyre not welcome anymore, anywhere, Waters said.

The lawmaker later claimed that she wasnt calling for protesters to actually harm Cabinet members.

On Saturday, Waters once again brought up the remarks from earlier in the summer and said she did not threaten Trump supporters but see...

Fracking Wastewater Spikes 1,440% In Half Decade, Adding To Dry Regions Water Woes "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Between 2011 and 2016, fracked oil and gas wells in the U.S. pumped out record-breaking amounts of wastewater, which is laced with toxic and radioactive materials, a new Duke University study concludes. The amount of wastewater from fracking rose 1,440 percent during that period. Over the same time, the total amount of water used for fracking rose roughly half as much, 770 percent, according to the paper published today in the journal Science Advances. Previous studies suggested hydraulic fracturing does not use significantly more water than other energy sources, but those findings were based only on aggregated data from the early years of fracking, Avner Vengosh, professor of geochemistry and water quality at Dukes Nicholas School of the Environment, said in a statement.

Friday Hack Chat: Playing With Fire "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Were pretty sure all the hackers and tinkerers and makers out there were a tiny bit of a pyromaniac in their youth. Thats what makes this weeks Hack Chat so exciting: were talking about Hacking With Fire.

Our guest for this weeks Hack Chat will be [Brice Farrell], who, like most of us, has been interested in fire his entire life. Hes taken this interest and turned his amateur passion into something semi-professional. Hes a PGI certified pyrotechnician, an electrical engineer, and an ice carver. This year, he appeared on BattleBots where he built the flame system for Battle Royale with Cheese.

Given [Brice]s extensive expertise, this Hack Chat is going to cover the relevant safety concerns of work with fire, how to keep yourself safe, and how to do everything legally. Well be talking about fireball shooters of all sizes, ignition techniques, and the use (and introduction) of fire in combat robotics. That last point is extremely interesting: is fire on a BattleBot actually useful, and what can you do to protect your bot from it?

After 9/11: The Staggering Economic And Human Cost Of The War On Terror "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there, President George W. Bush announced on September 20th, 2001, following the 9/11 attacks. Bushs War on Terror did not end with Al Qaeda it has roared on into an endless conflict spanning the globe, costing hundreds of thousands of lives and trillions of US taxpayers dollars. Americans should not expect one battle, Bush continued, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. Days later, the Bush administration launched its air war. By the end of 2001, the US had dropped 17,500 bombs on Afghanistan. The War in Afghanistan is now in its 17th year, making it Americas longest war. The Pentagon reports that the Afghan conflict costs US taxpayers $45 billion per year. The human and economic cost of the post-9/11 US War on Terror has been investigated extensively by the Costs of War Project, based out of the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs at Brown University.

European Parliament approves controversial new copyright law in blow to tech firms "IndyWatch Feed War"

An alliance of tech giants and internet activists lost a battle against content creators seeking more protection for their work. The vote by European lawmakers to reform EU copyright law could redefine internet freedom.

Music apps

A multi-year battle that saw media organizations and creative individuals seeking content protection face off against against big tech and internet-freedom activists came to a head in Strasbourg on Wednesday, when the European Parliament voted to update copyright legislation for the age of content-sharing platforms.

MEPs voted 438-226 with 39 abstentions in favor of the EU Copyright Directive that is set to give more power to artists, news and traditional media companies as opposed to tech giants like Facebook, Microsoft and Google.

This is a good sign for Europes creative industry, said German MEP Axel Voss, who helped move the bill along through parliament.

MEPs voted on a range of conflicting amendments prior to the vote, making the make-up of the final draft law not immediately clear.

Two contentious articles

Two contentious proposals were at the heart of the drama: Article 11, which covers the rights of press publishers, would see newspapers, magazines and other such agencies receive a fee when content platforms link to their stories, so-called neighboring rights; and Article 13, which would hold content distributors like YouTube liable for copyright infringement committed on their platforms, an attempt to ensure content producers dont get ripped off.

The laws critics fear that Article 11 will be unworkable and Article 13 could lead to upload filters, or algorithms that would give tech giants control over what content appears on their platform, effectively censoring information. They warn that overly cautious algorithms could also ban content even when it does not breach copyright law, known as overblocking. They also warn of the cost that such a requirement would have for smaller publishing platf...

How To Start All Over And Rebuild Your Life From Scratch "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By Luminita D. Saviuc via Purpose Fairy

When life forces you to start all over and rebuild your life from scratch, instead of panicking and looking at the whole thing as a punishment, and instead of allowing fear to paralyze you, you can look at it the whole experience as a new chance. As a new opportunity for you to craft your life on a stronger and healthier foundation. A new chance for you to be happy. To start all over and show the world what you are really made of.

START ALL OVER

Each day is a gift given to you by life itself. Each day is a new beginning, a new chance and a new opportunity for you to create something better, something new.  To offer more value to the world around you, and to reveal more of yourself to those you love. Each day is a new life, each moment is a precious gift. So make the best of each day. Make the best of each moment.

Here are some things you can do to start all over and rebuild your life from scratch.

P.S. This is a sequel to my previous post, What to Do When You Are Lost and Dont Know Your Next Step.

How to Start All over and Rebuild Your Life from Scratch

1. Be patient.

Starting all over and rebuilding your life from scratch is not an easy thing to do. It requ...

Nancy Pelosi, Confident: I Will Be the Speaker of the House "IndyWatch Feed War"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told CNNs Christiane Amanpour on Monday that she is confident that Democrats will win the midterm elections on November 6 and that she will be elected Speaker of the House.

Pelosi told Amanpour who praised her as a trail blazer and told her she had achieved incredible things said that she might have stepped aside to make room for new leadership if Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 election, because she wanted to protect Obamacare a law about which she said she felt very proprietary.

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, night and closeup

However, she said, since 45 had won she declined to refer to him as president throughout the interview she would stay and run for speaker, partly to inspire other women:

PELOSI: If Hillary Clinton had won and the Affordable Care Act was protected I feel very proprietary about that I was happy to go my way. We didnt know who would come forward, but thats up to the caucus, they give me the honor of serving and its up to them to choose who comes next. But to have no woman at the table, and to have the Affordable Care Act at risk, I said as long as hes here, I am here. So 45 not to be disrespectful, but

AMANPOUR: You mean President Trump, 45.

PELOSI: Yeah. So, no, but I have always been opposed I think there was one election for leadership that I was not opposed in. People like to get started on what they think comes next, and thats up to the caucus to decide. But I feel very comfortable about the support that I have in the caucus and that I will be the speaker of the house.

AMANPOUR: You definitely are going to stand and you definitely think you are going to win?

PELOSI: I think its really important, though, for women to see as well, because you cant run away from a fight. You are in the arena. So when some people come forward and say, well, we should have somebody new, okay, you are in the arena, when the Republicans have such a poverty of ideas that the only thing they can put in their ads [sic] is that I am a San Francisco liberal who supports LGBTQ rights, I can take the heat. I dont like implying that thats not a good thing, our San Francisco values. But I want women to know that this isnt easy. Shock Report: More Americans Killed By Police Since 9/11 Than Soldiers Killed In War "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By Matt Agorist via The Free Thought Project.com

In a Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford praised the 40 million Americans whove served in the military since the revolutionary war. He also noted that 5,000 soldiers have been tragically killed in military action beyond US borders since Americas war on terror was launched after 9/11.

Thousands of families grieve daily for their fallen loved ones and the war machine that sent them to an early grave shows no signs of slowing.

These fallen military men and women, we are told, died fighting for our freedom.

The terrorists hate our freedom, George W. Bush famously said after 9/11. And, if this was true, they certainly have little reason to hate us now, as Freedom in America has plummeted since that fateful September day.

For the last 15 years, America has fallen across the board in indices rating the worlds countries by levels of freedom.

Americans are under constant surveillance, our every move under a microscope by government goons, protecting us from terrorists. We are under the constant threat of violence from the state for possessing a plant, or having a tail light out, or simply walking down the street.

Americans are constantly paranoid of those blue and red lights popping up in the rearview mirror that most always end in extortion and cou...

UNAM: Hacia dnde parar? "IndyWatch Feed Noramerica"

Foto: Cuartoscuro

Why Politicizing Open Source is a Terrible Idea "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Submitted via IRC for TheMightyBuzzard

In our increasingly politicized world, it has become popular to chant "all software is political." Software builds the systems that free or constrain us, the thinking goes, and so we should withhold it from bad people. This is the thinking that has led Microsoft employees and others to decry contracts tech companies have with ICE (US Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement), insisting that their software only be sold to people they like.

[...] Over the years we as an open source community have experimented with all sorts of stupid ideas, like efforts to block anyone from using code for commercial purposes unless they pay. Each time, we've realized that as good a goal as it is for developers to get paid, for example, the destruction caused by closing off the code to uses we don't like ends up ruining the foundations upon which open source rests.

This is dramatically more important, however, when it comes to attempts to politicize open source software.

As developer Chris Cordle stated, "Nobody wins" and the "whole idea [undergirding open source] dies" ... "if an author arbitrarily picks and chooses who can and can't use it based on whoever Twittersphere is mad at this week." It doesn't matter if there is tremendous cause for that anger. Open source dies when it becomes politicized.

Kavanaughs Toxic Net Neutrality Record Went Mostly Unnoticed During Hearings "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

ts no secret that Democrats were attempting to press Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on a laundry list of topics during his confirmation hearings last week. Yet one issue that initially seemed like it would be part of their pushback, net neutrality, was scarcely mentioned at all over the hours of testimony. Last month several Senate Democrats criticized Kavanaughs views on net neutrality, highlighting a dissent he wrote in a case that upheld the 2015 Open Internet Order, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule that enshrined the internet protections and was rescinded last year by the Republican-controlled agency. Kavanaughs appointment to the Supreme Court was high stakes for many reasons, Democrats argued, including the future of net neutrality.

Minnesota Regulators Postpone Line 3 Meeting After Protests "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

from Red Power Media

Minnesota regulators postponed a meeting Tuesday on Enbridge Energys planned Line 3 replacement after pipeline opponents disrupted the meeting with a bullhorn and a boombox.

Protests erupted as the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission met to discuss whether Enbridge met conditions earlier imposed by the panel. The PUC approved the project in June, giving Enbridge a green light to replace its aging Line 3 crude oil pipeline across Minnesota.

Opponents in the back of the PUC hearing room took out a bullhorn and made speeches aimed at the commissioners, the Star Tribune reported.

You should all be ashamed, one protester said.

PUC Chairwoman Nancy Lange recessed the meeting but eventually canceled it when a protester playing music on a boombox refused to turn it off.

Several opponents sat with their backs facing the commissioners. Their shirts featured slogans such as Enbridge lap dogs.

Co-op Values In The Modern World "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It may seem like the soft side of business, but values are at the heart of every example of co-operative excellence and core to the advisory work of Co-operatives UK. The International Co-operative Alliance has codified 10 values six co-operative and four ethical. The co-operative values self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, solidarity describe the design of the business. The ethical values honesty, openness, social responsibility, caring for others describe its operation. Alongside these are seven principles three on how co-op ownership should be structured, three on co-op culture and one on the independence of the business as a democratic enterprise. As Sion Whellens of Calverts Worker Co-op says, while the structure and independence of ownership makes you a co-op, it is your commitment to co-operative culture that makes you part of the wider co-op movement.

Reading 11 COR 8:1B-7, 11-13

Brothers and sisters:
Knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up.
If anyone supposes he knows something,
he does not yet know as he ought to know.
But if one loves God, one is known by him.

So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols:
we know that there is no idol in the world,
and that there is no God but one.
Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth

yet for us there is

one God, the Father,
from whom all things are and for whom we exist,
and one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom all things are and through whom we exist.

But not all have this knowledge.
There are some who have been so used to idolatry up until now
that, when they eat meat sacrificed to idols,
their conscience, which is weak, is defiled.

Thus, through your knowledge, the weak person is brought to destruction,
the brother for whom Christ died.
When you sin in this way against your brothers

Why its so hard to reach an international agreement on killer robots "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

For several years, civil society groups have been calling for a ban on what they call killer robots. Scores of technologists have lent their voice to the cause. Some two dozen governments now support a ban and several others would like to see some kind of international regulation.

Yet the latest talks on lethal systems wrapped up last month with no agreement on a ban. The Group of Governmental Experts meeting, convened in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, did not even clearly proceed towards one. The outcome was a decision to continue discussions next year.

Those supporting a ban are not impressed. But the reasons for the failure to reach agreement on the way forward are complex.

Digital government isnt working in the developing world: Heres why "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The digital transformation of society has brought many immediate benefits: its created new jobs and services, boosted efficiency and promoted innovation. But when it comes to improving the way we govern, the story is not that simple.

It seems reasonable to imagine introducing digital information and communication technologies into public sector organisations known as digital or e-government would have a beneficial impact on the way public services are delivered. For instance, by enabling people to claim rebates for medical bills via a government website.

When implemented well, e-government can reduce the cost of delivering government and public services, and ensure better contact with citizens especially in remote or less densely populated areas. It can also contribute to greater transparency and accountability in public decisions, stimulate the emergence of local e-cultures, and strengthen democracy.

Prompting people to listen to each other reduces inequality and improves group performance "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A small but impactful shift in the way a group assignment is presented can significantly reduce racial inequality within the group, as well as lead to better work, according to new research by Bianca Manago, assistant professor of sociology at Vanderbilt University. Groups, Inequality and Synergy, co-authored with Jane Sell at Texas A&M University and Carla Goar at Kent State University, appears online in the September 2018 issue of Social Forces.

Previous research has shown that groups often diminish the contributions of minorities, by dismissing their opinions more often, for example, or by being less likely to adopt their ideas. Manago and her colleagues sought to discover whether reframing the parameters of a task could reduce that , and how that would impact the quality of the groups work.

Past research shows that people with different skills working together is good for , but relatively little research has been done on how superficial differences that shouldnt matter, like race, affect group performance, Manago said. We found that when people are more willing to listen to the minority group member, the group does better.

Gorgeous Omnidirectional 3D Printed Speaker "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

With all due respect to the hackers and makers out there that provide us with all these awesome projects to salivate over, a good deal of them tend to prioritize functionality over aesthetics. Which isnt a bad thing necessarily, and arguably better than the alternative. But for many people theres a certain connotation around DIY, an impression that the final product is often a little rough around the edges. Its usually cheaper, maybe even objectively better, but rarely more attractive.

Which makes builds like this absolutely beautiful 3D printed Bluetooth speaker by [Ahmsville] especially impressive. Not only did he engineer a fantastic sounding speaker that projects stereo sound no matter where you are in the room, he clearly gave a lot of thought into making the final product look as good as it sounds.

The 3D-printed enclosure provides separation for the four internal speakers and two passive radiators, as well as holding the electronics. A custom made 3S battery powers the Bluetooth module though an isolated step-down module, and the twin 18 W TDA2030 amplifiers feed their respective pair of drivers.

The device is surrounded by an impressively detailed 3D-printed mesh, which is then wrapped with some speaker grill fabric to give it a very professional look. In the video after the break, [Ahmsville] shows a time-lapse of building the speaker, as well as a demonstration of how...

The Tonight Show Cancellation Of Norm Macdonalds Appearance Is Cowardice "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Tonight Show has abruptly cancelled an appearance this week by Norm Macdonald, who is promoting his new talk show on Netflix, because of comments he made during an interview with the Hollywood Reporter regarding the Me Too movement.

Macdonald has this to say about the movement as a whole:

Im happy the #MeToo movement has slowed down a little bit. It used to be, One hundred women cant be lying. And then it became, One woman cant lie. And that became, I believe all women. And then youre like, What? Like, that Chris Hardwick guy I really thought got the blunt end of the stick there.

He went on to discuss the heavy toll felt by Roseanne Barr and Louis CK, both longtime friends of his, for their comments and actions:

But she was just so broken and just crying constantly. There are very few people that have gone through what they have, losing everything in a day. Of course, people will go, What about the victims? But you know what? The victims didnt have to go through that.

Later Macdonald apologized on Twitter, saying hes deeply sorry if he sounded like he was minimizing the pain their victims feel.

Macdonalds comments were no doubt controversial, but far from outside of the mainstream. In fact, last December The New York Times ran an op-ed by Bret Stephens titled, When #Me Too Goes Too Far, dealing with very similar concerns about how the movement can paint with too broad a brush and condemn actions too quickly, and without enough facts.

Arguably the most damning of Macdonalds quotes is the one he apologized for, saying that the victims of CK and Barr did not have their lives destroyed in a single day. In CKs case, depending on the level of trauma his victims felt, this may or may not be true, but Macdonald is talking about good friends of his. Is he supposed to say that they are awful human beings who deserve to have their lives destroyed?

NBC announced that same day his appearance on The Tonight Show was cancelled, out of sensitivity to our audience. The announcement followed his apology.

Lebanon needs political action to avoid economic collapse -finance minister "IndyWatch Feed War"

Politicians in Lebanon, still lacking a government four months after national elections, need to take action to stop the countrys economic crisis becoming an economic collapse, its finance minister said on Wednesday.

.
Infighting has hampered efforts by Prime Minister-designate Saad Al-Hariri to form a national unity administration, leaving a political vacuum that has increased concerns for the highly-indebted economy.

.
We are not concealing this crisis, but will this crisis inevitably lead us to a collapse? I say that with strong political commitment, political will and cooperation between all sectors we can avoid it, caretaker Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil said.

Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil made the remarks following a meeting with the governments economic and social council. (Reuters)

.
His comments, which followed a meeting with the governments economic and social council, were televised. Asked by Reuters what he meant by collapse, he replied the economic situation.

.
Leaders from across the political spectrum agree a government urgently needs to be formed, but a deal remains elusive.

.
Its formation would be likely to help raise investor confidence in the country, unlock billions of dollars in donor funding and enable parliament to embark on long-overdue reforms.

.
In April, international donors meeting in Paris pledged more than $11 billion of investment, but they want evidence of economic reforms first. At that meeting Hariri promised to reduce the budget deficit as a percentage of GDP by 5 percent over five years.

.
Lebanon had the worlds third highest debt-to-GDP ratio, at over 150 percent, at the end of 2017. The International Monetary Fund wants to see immediate and substantial fiscal adjustment to improve debt sustainability.

.
On Wednesday, parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri said Lebanon did not have the luxury of time when it came to forming a government especially when it comes to the economic situation.

.
Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh has said the Lebanese pound, which is pegged to the dollar, will remain stable and that the central bank has high foreign reserves.

.
He reiterated those comments to broadcaster CNBC on Tuesday.

.
Lebanons foreign assets excluding gold were $43.56 billion at the end of August, according to central bank data.

Why Do People Share Conspiracy Theories and Fake News? Maybe It's the Human Need for Chaos "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

In the Salon

There seems to be a lot of science being thrown at the "Trump Phenomenon." Salon covers yet another, and interviews the author.

A new paper, recently presented at the American Political Science Association's annual convention, suggests a widespread motive driving people to share fake news, conspiracy theories and other hostile political rumors. "Many status-obsessed, yet marginalized individuals experience a 'Need for Chaos' and want to 'watch the world burn'," lead author Michael Petersen tweeted, announcing the availability of a preprint copy.

Truth, in such a worldview, is beside the point, which offers a new perspective on the limitations of fact-checking. The motivation behind sharing or spreading narratives one may not even believe can help make sense of a variety of threatening or confusing recent developments in advanced democracies. It also sheds light on disturbing similarities with outbreaks of ethnic or genocidal violence, such as those seen in Rwanda and the Balkan nations during the 1990s.

U.S. Stands Behind Saudi, UAE Claims Coalition Partners Acting to Reduce Risks to Civilians in Yemen Conflict "IndyWatch Feed War"

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he has certified that coalition partners Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are acting to reduce risks to civilians from their military operations in Yemen.

Pompeo said he delivered the certification on Tuesday to Congress, as required by US law to continue American refueling of Saudi and UAE warplanes in the conflict, which has led to the worlds worst humanitarian crisis.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

In a statement, Pompeo said both countries are undertaking demonstrable actions to reduce the risk of harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure resulting from military operations of these governments.

The United Nations estimates that as many as 10,000 people have died in the conflict, most of them civilians, since the Saudi-led coalition launched military operations in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

Government forces are fighting Iran-backed Huthi rebels who seized control of Sanaa in 2014.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis issued a separate statement endorsing the certification, which he said has been illustrated by coalition support for United Nations-led efforts to end the conflict.

The Trump administration has been clear that ending the conflict in Yemen is a national security priority, Pompeo added in his statement.

He said Washington would work closely with the coalition to ensure Saudi and UAE support for UN peace efforts and to allow unimpeded access for commercial and humanitarian relief supplies to reach Yemenis.

Long-awaited, UN-brokered peace talks between the Saudi-backed government and the Huthi rebels failed to take place as planned last week in Geneva.

The Huthis said the UN had failed to guarantee the safe return of their delegation from Geneva to Sanaa and to secure the evacuation of wounded rebels to Oman.

Fighting Absolutism With Activism "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Its not perfect. Its not what I recall seeing in the Utopian slideshows at sustainability workshops and green living festivals: where impossibly white towers laced with ivy and peppered with balcony trees rise high above a shimmering green pedestrian footpath, where watercolor people wave to passersby on the bicycle highway next to them. And you just know that somewhere in that picture theres a cafe serving delicious meat made in a sparkling laboratory powered by solar energy, garnished with freshly picked local sprouts, served by robots because humans dont work in the service industry anymore. They spend their days playing music, having sex and frolicking. No, it wasnt like that at all. And dont get me wrong. That picture of what could be could actually be. But it lies not only on the other side of capitalism.

PLA: The Plastic That Grows "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

If youve ever taken a coast-to-coast car trip across the United States, the one thing thats sure to impress you is the mind-bogglingly immense amount of corn that we grow here. If you take the northern route Ive done it seven times, so I know it by heart youll see almost nothing but corn from Ohio to Montana. The size of the fields is simply staggering, and youre left wondering, Do we really eat all this corn?

The simple answer is no, we dont. We grow way more corn than we can eat or, once turned into alcohol, drink. We do feed a lot to animals, many of which subsequently end up as burgers or pork chops. But even after all that, and after accounting for exports, we still have a heck of a lot of corn to put to work. There are lots of industrial uses for this surplus corn, though, and chances are pretty good youve got an ear or two worth coiled up next to your 3D-printer, in the form of polylactic acid, or PLA.

Forget the Fossils

Most of us give little thought to where plastics come from, and those that do are more likely than not to assume that plastics come from petroleum. For most of the history of the polymer industry, that was a safe bet, but with the relatively recent introduction of engineered bioplastics, the industry had a new feedstock: recently deceased plants rather than fossilized ones. (This doesnt include biopolymers taken from nature, like cellulose and latex, that are used more or less directly; Mother Nature is a surprisingly good polymer chemist.)

Resistance: NYT Reports Threats To Senator Susan Collins and Staff on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh "IndyWatch Feed War"

Amped up hate-rhetoric against Trump and his supporters

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and her staffers are facing taunts and threats over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, including a rape threat, reports the New York Times.

Buried under no fewer than 10 paragraphs and the anodyne headline Interest Groups Turn Up Pressure on Senators Before Kavanaugh Vote, the far-left New York Timesfinally gets to the meat of the story with the news that Collins and her staffers are facing threats and vulgar language from the left-wing Resistance, all of this in the hope of intimidating Collins to vote against Kavanaughs confirmation.

The [lefts] frustration has boiled over at points, the Times understates. Annie Clark, a spokeswoman for Ms. Collins, provided The New York Times with copies of a letter and multiple voice mail messages addressed to the senator using vulgar language and outright threats.

Image may contain: 1 person

One example of a threat is a caller [who] told a 25-year-old female staff member at one of Ms. Collinss Maine offices that he hoped she would be raped and impregnated.

Collins has also had some 3,000 coat hangers mailed to her office (a reference to the back alley abortion).

Protesters have shown up at Collins private home in Bangor.

A group of men and women, some garbed in red robes and white bonnets an allusion to The Handmaids Tale, the Margaret Atwood book and television series demonstrated outside the senators home in Bangor over the weekend, the Times reports.

According to Collins, she is also facing a form of blackmail from a left-wing activist who raised $1 million in a crowd funding campaign. If Collins votes to confirm Kavanaugh, the activist is threatening to release the money to whoever challenges Collins in 2020.

This quid pro quo fund-raising campaign appears to be the equivalent of an attempt to bribe me, Collins said in an emailed statement to the Times. Attempts at bribery or extortion will not influence my vote at all.

The Times did not report any similar behavior from anyone on the right who is hoping to affect Collins final decision on Kavanaugh.

This story is just one more example of the increase in violence and threats people on the political right have faced over the last...

Kumtor is an open-cast gold mining site in Kyrgyzstans Central Tian Shan mountain system, situated in the mountains' central permafrost massif which reaches heights of 3800-4400 metres above sea level. Commercial exploitation at Kumtor began in 1997. The site is 100% owned by the Canadian gold-mining company Centerra Gold, which manages it through its subsidiaries, the Kumtor Gold Company (KGK) and the Kumtor Operating Company (KOK). Kyrgyzstan, in its turn holds roughly 33% of shares in the company through its OJSC Kyrgyzaltyn Joint Stock Company. The gold reserves at Kumtor are assessed as amounting to 716.21 tonnes, of which 316.57 are in open cast mines and 399.64 underground.

Cryptocurrency crash now worse than dot-com crash "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Its no big secret that cryptocurrency has been spiraling downward in recent months especially when it comes to the latest and greatest alt-coins but it now appears digital blockchain currency has reached yet another turning point by plummeting worse than the dot-com bubble did in the year 2000.

The MVIS CryptoCompare Digital Assets 10 Index extended its collapse to 80% on Monday surpassing the Nasdaq Composite Indexs 78 percent peak-to-trough freefall following the 2000 dot-com bubble after virtual currencies have fallen to record lows, Bloomberg reports.

From Bloomberg:

Like their predecessors during the Internet-stock boom almost two decades ago, cryptocurrency investors who bet big on a seemingly revolutionary technology are suffering a painful reality check, particularly those in many secondary tokens, so-called alt-coins.

It just shows what a massive, speculative bubble the whole crypto thing was as many of us at the time warned, said Neil Wilson, chief market analyst in London for Markets.com, a foreign-exchange trading platform. Its a very likely a winner takes all market Bitcoin currently most likely.

Now the question remains: Will people stay in crypto or get out of it?

Will cryptocurrencies recover from their recent crash and return to dominate over traditional currencies?

[$] Toward better handling of hardware vulnerabilities "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

From the kernel development community's point of view, hardware vulnerabilities are not much different from the software variety: either way, there is a bug that must be fixed in software. But hardware vendors tend to take a different view of things. This divergence has been reflected in the response to vulnerabilities like Meltdown and Spectre which was seen by many as being severely mismanaged. A recent discussion on the Kernel Summit discussion list has shed some more light on how things went wrong, and what the development community would like to see happen when the next hardware vulnerability comes around.

Britain Exposed in Riveting UN Court Case Over Illegal Detachment of Chagos From Rest of Mauritius "IndyWatch Feed War"

Chagos

From Lalit, September 11, 2018

An absolutely riveting case was before the United Nations court, the International Court of Justice at The Hague, this week. How could a court case 50 years after the events, in what is usually the dry legalistic argumentation of the most arcane kind about international law, be riveting by any stretch of the imagination, let alone absolutely riveting?

It was riveting because of the only-just-suppressed rage of many of those speaking in favour of the UN General Assembly Resolution calling on the ICJ to give an Advisory Opinion on whether Britain in the 1960s completed the decolonization of Mauritius, when it excised Chagos which includes Diego Garcia from Mauritius, and what the consequences of this incomplete decolonization are today, including for the resettling by the Mauritian Government of the Chagossian people on their home islands. The only-just-suppressed rage was coupled with lucid argumentation that was, itself, a fine blend of legal, political, logical and factual points woven tightly together. All this showed that the wounds of colonization are still raw. And that the burning desire to finish with colonization is a live emotion until today in Africa and world-wide.

We in LALIT and all our friends, comrades, colleagues in the struggle over the past 40 years, had the additional feeling of being vindicated. All our arguments logical and humane were on international display, being taken seriously by 15 judges of the UN Court, when we have spent decades answering the childish British arguments, often mimicked by subservient local elites that say, Old Man Ramgoolam sold Chagos to the English, therefore there is nothing you can do about it. At the ICJ, all the finer points of law we have, as mere amateurs in LALIT, grappled with for years, were teased out and discussed by top legal minds of the world, and we could all follow this live. And almost all arguments were in favour of the ICJ giving an Opinion, and giving it against Britain for not completing decolonization, and also calling on the Court to lay out the consequences for today of this failure to complete decolonization. It was a source of pride to see a big delega...

Runners woes at Asian Games highlight Jakartas air pollution problem "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

JAKARTA Organizers of the recently concluded Asian Games in Indonesia had been braced for the worst-case scenario: forest fires flaring up and shrouding Palembang, one of the host cities, in a thick, choking haze. Sure enough, air quality problems surfaced but not in Palembang. Instead, it was in Jakarta, the other host city, some 430 kilometers (270 miles) away, where air pollution and high temperatures combined to make life miserable for some of the athletes taking part in Asias biggest sporting event. The race was so difficult  the hot weather, humidity, and not just the humidity but the pollution, Indonesian racewalker Hendro Yap said after recovering from collapsing at the end of the mens 50-kilometer event. Hendros time of 4:32:20 was the slowest in two decades in the Asian Games; the fact that he was only one of five athletes to finish the race under those conditions, he said, was a miracle. Racing here is not easy. This is Indonesia, he said. This is a miracle for me I can finish. This is a miracle. He also told The Jakarta Post that he could strongly feel the air pollution during the race. The U.S. Embassys air monitoring station in Central Jakarta that day recorded high concentrations of PM2.5, a fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter that is deemed harmful to human health. The embassy recorded PM 2.5 levels of 80 micrograms per cubic meter during the Aug. 30 race eight times higher than the

Illegal wildlife trade on Facebook in Thailand open for all to see "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Facebook is once again in the spotlight, this time for the rampant illegal wildlife trade being facilitated through its groups in Thailand. In a rapid assessment in 2016, carried out for just 30 minutes a day over a total of 23 days, researchers from TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, found 1,521 listings of live wild animals for sale on Facebook in Thailand. The animals on offer belonged to at least 200 species. Only about half are protected under the countrys Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act of 1992, or WARPA, the main national law governing the wildlife trade in Thailand. The rest of the species currently remain unprotected by any national law, the report found. In 2016, TRAFFIC monitored 12 Facebook groups trading in wildlife. When they looked into these groups again in 2018, they found that at least nine of these groups were still active, with one turning into a secret group. In just two years, the membership within these groups had nearly doubled, from 106,111 members in July 2016, to 203,445 members in July 2018. I was aware of the trade of wildlife on Facebook in Thailand, but it is always shocking to see how easy it is to offer protected animals for sale, and how easy it is to buy them, Vincent Nijman, a professor of anthropology at Oxford Brookes University, U.K., who studies the wildlife trade in Southeast Asia, told Mongabay. The general public often thinks that the illegal wildlife trade takes place in shady places, in hidden

Foreign Media Reporting That Reckless China Is Preparing for Multiple Pearl Harbors Against the US "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In August of 2018, the Pentagon released a report that was not covered in our corporate controlled media. Subsequently, I have learned that the Pentagon held a closed door briefing on the topic of the Chinese preparing to unleash a series of Pearl Harbor type of attacks against the United States.

The readers may be wondering where I obtained this information? It certainly wasnt from the MSM in America. The reports surfaced in places like New Zealand and France.

History Repeats

Before we get to the details of the report, it is important for all Americans to realize that we have been down this historical road before.  Please note the numerous and conflicting territorial claims regarding control of one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes, the South China Sea.

Ever since President Trump introduced tariffs on Chinese products, the Chinese have greatly increased their naval presence in the South China Sea. Countries from Vietnam, to the Philippines, to Taiwan and Australia are fearful of Chinas next move. China is in a similar position as to what Japan was in during the period from 1929-1941. They need natural resources to cover their expanding industrial base and the US is blocking them at every turn just like the US did in the 1930s. And they are unable to feed their people. The US is exploiting this weakness in order to provoke World War III.

The McCollum Memo

Prior to WW II, the US created something called the 8 point plan (MCollum Memo). Eventually, this caused Japan to respond to the interference with its trade and attack Pearl Harbor. Is this what the Trump administration is doing? Is...

The UKs Battle for Real Conservatism Britain Needs to Reject Middle of the Road Mediocre "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Guest post by Janice Atkinson, EU MEP from the UK

There are two battles going on at the heart of the Conservative party in Great Britain which will determine what type of Brexit we will get and who will be our next prime minister.

Time is short for getting a Brexit deal that the Europeans desperately need for their economies, while still shoring up the four pillars of their constitution that they insist a deal must be based upon.

I remind you,the UK voters rejected the four pillars.

We voted to leave the EU, not to be some offshore island dangling suckling on a teet that extracts billions and dictates all our laws and standards.

She wants the UK to remain in the EU even if the people voted against it.

Her Chequers Plan is not Brexit at all. It is an excuse to Remain camouflaged in wolves clothing. It is a plan that is rejected by the people, most of her own party and even by the EU itself.

Then there are the Brexit visions of Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg and their possible leadership challenges.

Personally, I favour a free trade deal, as offered by the EU, which would suit our US friends and our Commonwealth allies. As over 90% of world trade will be outside of the EU in just a few years, its a no-brainer.

Or WTO terms would suffice.

Even the EU has offered a free trade deal. As with everything that the EU touches, they negotiate to the last minute and then produce a partial solution.

At the moment, the EU is on black ops because they are desperate to prop up Mrs May as prime minister in Operation Save Theresa because they know that only she will sign the 39bn divorce bill that the EU desperately needs to balance its books.

If a leadership challenge crowns Jacob Rees-Mogg or Boris Johnson then they know that the British will back their promise not to pay British taxpayers money over to Brussels that we do not owe.

The EU also knows that keeping Britain in some sort of Brexit limbo: open borders, open migration, s still coming in, allied to the European Court of Justice and their standards for goods, will stop us becoming a global trader and competitive in taxation.

What they fear most is for the UK to thrive outside the sclerotic bloc, as this w...

The worst police shooting yet "IndyWatch Feed World"

Amber Guyger's killing of Botham Shem Jean is an unspeakable tragedy. It also highlights the need for officers like Guyger to face impartial justice. It is hard to think of a more tragic, more senseless shooting in America than the killing last week of Botham Shem Jean, a young black risk-assurance associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and a member of Dallas West Church of Christ. This is what we know so far. Jean was home alone in his apartment in the South Side Flats complex in Dallas when police officer Amber Guyger entered and shot him dead. The precise chain of events is somewhat disputed. The affidavit supporting Guyger's arrest warrant states that she believed she was entering her own apartment, which was directly below Jean's and laid out almost identically. When she placed her key in the lock, the door pushed open, the apartment was dark, she saw a "large silhouette" across the room, and she believed she was facing a burglar. She "drew her firearm" and "gave verbal commands," which she claims Jean ignored. She fired twice, and only then, she says, entered the apartment, called 911, turned on the lights, and realized she'd made a terrible mistake.

The New American "Dream" Job is Pretty Dull "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Actuarial science, the formal term for the study of insurance, was ranked the most valuable college major, according to a Bankrate.com report released on Monday. Actuarial science majors earn an average annual salary of $108,658 and have a better-than-average unemployment rate at 2.3 percent. And at a time when student debt is at a record high, these graduates are less likely to incur the added expense of additional schooling and delayed earning potential. Less than 1 in 4 graduates pursue advanced degrees.

"The actuarial science profession is interesting because students don't need advanced degrees to gain livable wages, but instead are certified through a series of exams overseen by the industry's professional organizations," said Bankrate.com analyst Adrian Garcia in an interview. "Students typically pass one to two of these exams while in school and then go on and complete others while working, earning raises and bonuses as they pass."

The study ranked 162 majors with labor forces of at least 15,000 people based on average annual income, employment status and whether those graduates went on to pursue a higher degree within 12 months. Income accounted for 70 percent of the weighted ranking, unemployment for 20 percent and 10 percent was awarded to career paths that did not demand additional education. The data was derived from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2016 American Community Survey.

Worries Grow Over Rickety Old Nuclear Power Plants in Hurricane Florences Path "IndyWatch Feed World"

With 1.5 million residents now under orders to evacuate their homes in preparation for Hurricane Florences landfall in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, the region faces the possibility of catastrophe should the storm damage one or more of the nuclear power plants which lie in its potential path.

As the Associated Press reported on Monday, The storms potential path also includes half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and other industrial waste, and numerous eastern hog farms that store animal waste in massive open-air lagoons.

The plants thought to lie in the path of the hurricane, which is expected to make landfall on the Southeastern U.S. coast on Thursday, include North Carolinas Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant in Southport, Duke Energy Sutton Steam Plant in Wilmington, and South Carolinas V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.

Florence will approach the Carolina coast Thursday night into Friday with winds in excess of 100mph along with flooding rains. This system will approach the Brunswick Nuclear Plant as well as the Duke-Sutton Steam Plant, Ed Vallee, a North Carolina-based meteorologist, told Zero Hedge. Dangerous wind gusts and flooding will be the largest threats to these operations with inland plants being susceptible to inland flooding.

He Was Screaming F-ck Trump: Republican Candidate Nearly Stabbed By Deranged Democrat "IndyWatch Feed World"

Rudy Peters

Episodes of threats and violence perpetuated by angry leftists furious about President Trumps agenda and policies, are becoming increasingly common in the US, particularly after a deranged Bernie Sanders supporter nearly killed majority whip Steve Scalise after opening fire on a practice session for the Congressional baseball game.

Another incident unfolded on Tuesday in northern California, where a 35-year-old man was arrested for whipping out a switchblade and attempting to stab Republican Congressional candidate Rudy Peters while the candidate was working a booth at the Castro Valley Fall Festival.

The man, who was later identified as Farzad Vincent Fazeli, was arrested and charged with one felony count of making criminal threats and a misdemeanor count of exhibiting a deadly weapon. According to media reports, Fazeli approached Peters unprovoked and started shouting fuck Trump and other disparaging profanities about the Republican Party. Fazeli then allegedly pulled out a switchblade and tried to stab Peters, but was foiled when the blade malfunctioned.

The Alameda County Sheriffs Office issued a statement about the incident (read it below):

Fazeli approached the victim in an aggressive manner and made disparaging remarks about his political party and elected officials, Alameda County Sheriffs Office said in a statement.

During the incident, Fazeli is suspected to have pulled out a switchblade knife and attempted to stab the victim. The knife malfunctioned and the victim became involved in a physical struggle with Fazeli.

County police responded to the incident at around 3:45 pm local time after somebody called in about a disturbance near Peters booth.

Peters said he has never before been concerned about his safety prior to the attempted stabbing. People are just polarized right now, and this...

Mexican Town With Lowest Crime Rate in the Country Kicked out Its Police and Politicians 7 Years Ago "IndyWatch Feed World"

In the town of Chern, in Michoacn, Mexico, a system of traditional indigenous law-enforcement and accountability continues to guide the people. In early 2011, residents of Chern created armed militias to fight off illegal logging and drug cartels in their community. The community kicked out politicians and police accused of ties to the drug cartels and began a new system of governance based on Purhpecha traditions.

On April 15 of this year, Chern celebrated seven years since their revolt against what they call the narco government. The people marked the seventh year of self-governance by naming third Council of Elders.

TV Cheran reports:

The narco government included a wide variety of characters, including cartel thugs or sicarios working alongside illegal loggers who conspired to ravish Cherns forests and anyone who got in their way. Chern lost over 50 community members between 2007 and 2011. Many of those simply disappeared, never to be seen again.

When Chern rose up, the local mayor, his cabinet, and all the local police fled the community and left community members to fend for themselves. This and many other details that would come to light during first months of the uprising exposed the collusion of local politicians and the police with organized crime and the very violent and illicit logging activity.

Once the corrupt police and politicians left, the community collected the weapons, vehicles, and uniforms and established their own ronda comunitaria or community guard. When the uprising first began you might see elderly women with sticks defending the community. These days the community guard is mostly young men and women with professional weapons.

Seven years later and Chern has one of the lowest levels of violence in all of Mexico. Quite an accomplishment while living in the violent state of Michoacn. [Cherns] main achievement has been peace. YouTube Censors Accounts Reporting Truth About Syrias Idlib "IndyWatch Feed World"

San Bruno based video sharing website YouTube shut down multiple Syria-based accounts on Saturday in attempts to enforce media blackouts against Syrian state and their allied forces.

Among the accounts removed are those of the Syrian Ministry of Defense, SANA News Agency, and the Syrian presidency. The accounts have been taken down due to violations to platforms terms of service and legal complaints, as an error message reads upon attempting to access the pages.

Damascus based Sama TV was also among the accounts taken down, with the link to their channel broadcasting an error message reading This page isnt available. Sorry about that. Try searching for something else.

Some news sources, including the Qatari funded and London-based Al-Araby al-Jadeed (The New Arab), attributed the closure to a report by TomoNews, a Taiwanese outlet that produces short, highly sensationalized and often bizarre CGI clips of tabloids and news stories.

The article accused several of the Syrian channels of generating ad revenue that linked to the Syrian General of Radio and Television, the agency responsible for operating state-owned media.

The U.S. Treasury identified the agency as subject to sanctions in 2012, in accordance with a 2011 executive order prohibiting U.S. nationals from engaging in business with any Syrian state-owned entity.

It seems more likely, however, that the Wests response to their loss in the Syrian proxy war, is that of firm desperation into winning the information war, by virtue of media and technology.

The termination came as Syria, with Russian assistance, waged a campaign to liberate Idlib, destroying rebel military equipment and bases, and incurring heavy losses from the terrorists. A day prior, SANA reported on the collaboration between militants from the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the White Helmets to identify key locations, where sarin and chlorine gas has been shipped, to launch a potential chemical weapons attack.

Meeting on Thursday in Jisr al-Shughour, the groups contended between al-Najia, a countryside region of Jisr al-Shughour, al-Hamawsh, and Kafr Nubbul as potential sites to launch a chemical attack from, according to the sources.

The account terminations have been carried out allegedly to muddle footage and coverage of another chemical attack waged by rebels, with the intent of framing Damascus and thus providing the justification for the US and its allies...

Security row over EU Galileo satellite project as Britain is shut out "IndyWatch Feed World"

A fresh row over the UKs involvement with the Galileo satellite programme, to which the countrys taxpayers have already paid 1bn, threatens to poison the Brexit talks after the EU shut Britain out of the project.

A majority of member states have turned against the UK and voted in favour of pushing forward on the next round of contracts for the 8bn project, despite requests for a delay to allow negotiations over British involvement to progress. UK firms are being blocked from bidding for contracts.

Galileo is an 8bn satellite navigation system intended to rival the US-controlled global positioning system. Once fully operational in 2020 it will provide accurate position, navigation and timing information to be used by governments, citizens, industry and the military.

British companies have been central to its design and build. A technical paper handed to EU negotiators last month warned that restricting UK involvement would lead to delays of up to three years and an additional cost to the EU of about 1bn. .

The result prompted a furious response from the UK science minister, Sam Gyimah, who repeated the claim that Britain was willing to walk away from the project, to develop a rival satellite. The UK was beaten by a simple majority within the 28 member states.

Gyimah said: The government has been clear that our preference is to contribute fully to Galileo as part of a deep security partnership with the EU, and that negotiations should be allowed to run their course. By forcing through this vote, while excluding UK companies from the contracts on unfounded security grounds, the European Commission has put this at risk.

There is an option on the table that would benefit both the UK and EU. If that is not accepted by the EU, we are a proud and confident nation and will be looking at all alternatives.

The development came 24 hours after European commission officials secured support from the 27 member states for their decision to treat the UK like any other non-EU country, despite concerns among some at the high-handed approach of its officials on the issue.

France, the UKs closest security partner in the EU, which is particularly keen for tight cooperation in the future, backed Michel Barnier, the EUs chief negotiato...

Evils and lesser evils "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Does this sound awfully familiar to you: Democratic politicians who constantly echo courageous populist themes in speeches, news releases and election ads, and then often uses the partys governmental power to protect the status quo and serve corporate donors in their interminable class war? David Sirota tears into the smug complacency of corporate Democrats. It felt good to see someone calling them out.

Amid an upsurge of populist energy that has alarmed the Democratic establishment, a new wave of left-leaning insurgents have been using Democratic primaries to wage a fierce war on the partys corporate wing. And, as in past presidential primary battles, many Democratic consultants, politicians and pundits have insisted that the party must prioritize unity and resist grassroots pressure to support a more forceful progressive agenda.

Not surprisingly, much of that analysis comes from those with career stakes in the status quo. Their crude attempts to stamp out any dissent or intraparty discord negates a stark truth: liberal Americas pattern of electing corporate Democrats rather than progressives has been a big part of the problem that led to Trump and that continues to make Americas economic and political system a neo-feudal dystopia.

Im not going to blame the Democrats for Trump thats all on the Republican party. But I will blame the Democrats for failing to provide a compelling alternative. Under the influence of big money donors, the current Democratic party is acting as if they only have to be slightly less insane than the Republicans to win, so theyve been swirling down the same drainjust with a bit more lag.

He names names, and gives examples of Democratic failures.

Less than a decade ago, with Democratic majorities controlling both the House and Senate, it was the administration led by Obama and Emanuel that bailed out Wall Street, enshrined a too-big-to-jail doctrine for megabanks and by its own admission designed the Affordable Care Act to preclude Medicare for All. Obamas administration did this while Democrats controlled both the House and Senate. It was Democratic lawmakers like Delawares Tom Carper and Connecticuts Joe Lieberman who helped insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists make sure the ACA also excluded any public healthcare option that could compete with private insurers.

Today, it is House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, from deeply liberal San Francisco, insisting that Medicare for All will not be any kind of litmus test for her party and promising that budget-cutting austerity will govern Democrats legislative agenda should they retake Congress.

Fukushima in America? Twelve nuclear power plants are in the path of Hurricane Florence flooding, storm surge threaten cooling operations "IndyWatch Feed World"

At least twelve operating nuclear reactors are in the predicted path of Hurricane Florence, which has been upgraded to a category 4 storm as it surges toward the U.S. East Coast. According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which offers an interactive map of active nuclear reactors, two plants are vulnerable to both heavy rainfall and the expected storm surge which could bring a surge of up to 20 feet of ocean water pouring into coastal areas.

Those two reactors, located NE of Myrtle Beach, North Carolina, are known as Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit 1 and Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit 1.

Each unit produces nearly 1,000 MWe of electricity, and they are both built on the General Electric Type 4 power plant design, which is almost identical to the GE nuclear power plant design used in the Fukushima-Daiichi reactors in Japan. All of these reactors are designed and constructed as boiling-water reactors or BWRs. The designs are decades old, and they are subject to catastrophic failures and even core meltdowns that release radioactive isotopes directly into the atmosphere and surrounding areas.

According to current forecasts, these nuclear power plants appear to be in the direct line of Hurricane Florence. Heres the current forecast from the NOAA, which brings the hurricane directly into North Carolinas coastline:
