David Runciman: The Last World Cup "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

The evidence for the premise that international sport spreads peace and goodwill has always been fairly thin: every major tournament is dressed up that way but the legacy is more often mothballed stadiums and simmering resentment, as was the case after South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014. Rarely, though, has a regime so brazenly signalled its indifference to the niceties of international sport, which require at least the pretence that bad behaviour gets put on hold. As the saying goes, hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue, and this is the currency in which Fifa likes to trade. But Putin isnt having any of it. He seems to have treated the award of the tournament as a licence to try his luck.

Rosemary Hill: Unhappy Ever After "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

A marriage that makes a good end to a comedy will often make as good a beginning to a tragedy. If any couple bore out that maxim it was Annabella Milbanke and George Gordon Byron. The happy chapter lasted barely 24 hours, the ever after is with us still.

Pankaj Mishra: The Wrong Human Rights "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Samuel Moyn wants to reinstate socialism which was, after all, the central language of justice globally before it was supplanted by human rights as an ethical ideal and political objective. This may seem like a quixotic project.

Shelter Dog With No Time Left Reaches Out Her Paw To Ask For Help "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Jon Patel and his wife Kayla werent entirely convinced they wanted a dog. But in early May, Jon went to a local shelter in Jackson, Tennessee, to have a look around.

There was a bunch of pit bulls and cats there, and the dogs were barking and jumping up on the cages, Jon Patel told The Dodo.

But one young pit bull wasnt barking or jumping at all, and she immediately caught Jons attention.

She was just sitting there very calmly while the other dogs were barking their heads off, Jon said. So I went over to her cage, and she stuck her little paw out, and when I reached my hand down, she stuck her little paw out through the cage, and I grabbed it. After that, I called Kayla and said, Weve got to get this dog.

The Patels learned that the pit bulls former owner had surrendered her, claiming that she was no longer cute.

Once she grew out of being a puppy, they just abandoned her there, Jon said. A lot of people get them [pit bulls] when theyre puppies because they think theyre cute, and when they grow up, they just abandon them, and thats what happened to her.

To this day, I dont understand why anyone would give her up because shes so sweet and loving, Kayla Patel told The Dodo. Shes never met a person or a tennis ball that she doesnt love immediately.

Trainer Puts Lipstick On Captive Beluga To Make Her Look 'Prettier' "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

A recent video shows a female trainer at a Chinese marine park doing something bizarre to a captive beluga she smears bright red lipstick across the whales mouth, laughing as she does it. According to a news report, the trainer said she was trying to make the whale prettier.

The stunt, which took place at Sun Asia Ocean World, a marine park in the coastal city of Dalian in northeastern China, was captured on video and released on a popular Chinese social media site earlier this month. The video got a lot of views it was played more than 100,000 times before being deleted this week, according to a news report. However, the video made some people very unhappy.

I cant believe people can do such things to make themselves popular, one commenter wrote before the video was deleted, according to Metro.

Another commenter asked, Is it safe to put lipstick on a whale? Has she thought about that before putting it on?

Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), said she isnt necessarily concerned about the harmful effects of the lipstick if this stunt was a one-time event, the makeup probably didnt cause much physical harm to the animal. Yet Rose is worried about the message this incident sends to the public.

Credit: iqiyi

What bothered me most about it, and what bothered me generally about whats going on in China, is that theres no respect shown to the animal, Rose told The Dodo. Its all very anthropomorphic Its just so bizarre to treat the animal like its a canvas to paint on. It showed a very significant lack of respect.

Rose, who has visited several Chinese aquariums and dolphinariums in the past few years, said she unfortunately isnt entirely surprised by the stunt.

Argentinas Ambassador to the United States: Who Is Fernando Oris de Roa? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Fernando Julio Oris de Roa, a wealthy agribusinessman who developed an interest in public policy, presented his credentials as Argentinas ambassador to the United States to President Donald Trump on January 24, 2018. Its his first such posting.

Oris de Roa was born November 4, 1952. His great-grandfather, Lino Oris de Roa (1845-1920), emigrated to Argentina from Spain and became an Army officer to helped conquer to Araucanian people in the Patagonian region in the 1870s.

Fernando Oris de Roa began his career at Continental Cereals in 1970, and rose to become its president in 1987. He left the company in 1992 and the following year led a group of investors who purchased San Miguel, a failing lemon producer and processor. Oris de Roa turned the company into the largest lemon producer in the world, but his methods made enemies in the United States. In 2000, he made a deal with U.S. citrus grower Sunkist to export Argentine lemons to the United States and have them labeled and marketed by Sunkist. This did not sit well with lemon growers in California and Arizona who saw their market share and profits threatened.

In 1999, Oris de Roa co-wrote the book Emotional Solvency: Learning to Generate Well-Being with Mara Carmen Gear and Ernesto Csar Liendo. A few years later, he took time out from his career to earn a Masters in public policy from Harvards Kennedy School of Government in 2003. Following that, Oris de Roa founded the poultry company Avex and set up a chicken growing and processing plant to concentrate on the export market. At its height, the Avex plant killed 75,000 chickens a day. He was also the president of the poultry company Los Valientes.

Oris de Roa served on the board of directors of Patagonia Gold before resigning in 2006. He became non-executive director of Orocobre Limited in June 2010, an Australian company that mines lithium and borax in Argentina.

Oris de Roa was made director of Expofrut, a pear and apple processor, in 2011. That year, a seasonal worker for Expofrut, Daniel Solano, disappeared after being arrested. Solano had protested labor fraud at Expofrut in which the company was accused of withholding half of workers salaries. President Maurici Macris appointment of Oris de Roas as ambassador in November 2017 was criticized because of his ties to the still-unsolved disappearance of Solano.

In 2011, Oris de Roa founded Investors Toolbox, a venture capital and private equity firm. He created Bravo Charabon, another agricultural firm, in 2013. He was director of Advantage Lithium until January 2018.

Oris de Roa ventured out of the business world in 2016 to become under...

Yemen The Starvation Siege Has Begun "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Cross-posted from Moon of Alabama

Last night the Saudi coalition launched its attack on the city of Hodeidah in Yemen. Hodeidah is the only Yemeni harbor on the Red Sea coast that can take large vessels. It is ruled by the Houthi who in 2014 took over the capital Sanaa and disposed of the Saudi installed Hadi government. 90% of the food for the 18 million people living in Houthi controlled areas comes through Hodeidah.

Saudi-owned satellite news channels and later state media announced the battle had begun, citing military sources. They also reported coalition airstrikes and shelling by naval ships. The initial battle plan appeared to involve a pincer movement. Some 2,000 troops who crossed the Red Sea from an Emirati naval base in the African nation of Eritrea landed west of the city with plans to seize Hodeidas port, Yemeni security officials said.

Emirati forces with Yemeni troops moved in from the south near Hodeidas airport, while others sought to cut off Houthi supply lines to the east, the officials said.

The port is now classified as a zone of active military conflict. Prolonged fighting may well destroy the port infrastructure. Even if the Saudi coalition forces take and reopen it they will continue to block food supplies for the central highlands of Yemen. They want to starve the Houthis into submission.

The attack from the south includes 3,000 to 5,000 troops under the command of Tariq Sale, a cousin of the recently killed former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh. They have been equipped with trucks and new weapons by the UAE. More forces are on their way from Aden and Taiz. They are supported by Emirati artillery, tanks and Saudi aerial bombing. The Saudi coalition forces are commanded by former officers from Australia, the U.S. and UK who have been hired by the UAE.

The New York Times editors do not want to understand the real problem with this attack:

A coalition led by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia is poised to attack the Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah, the home to 600,000 Yemenis and the lifeline for humanitarian aid that sustains most of the countrys people.

Experts have predicted that 250,000 people could be killed or displaced in the offensive.

The NYT is in principle supporting the Saudi attack. It wants the Houthis removed. It f...

Assanges Lawyer Calls Out Government, Ashamed to be Australian "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Julian Assanges lawyer, Australian-born Jennifer Robinson, appeared last Sunday on the Channel 7 network broadcast of Weekend Sunrise to discuss her clients demand for the Australian government to protect the Wikileaks editors rights and secure his freedom.

After six years into Assanges captivity inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, theres been virtually zero involvement by the Australian government to assist in the safe passage of Assange back to his native country.

In the interview with the Aussie morning host duo, Robinson shocks and surprises them with one very basic question: Why hasnt Assanges home country come to his defense?

If the Australian government would come to the fore, and help to resolved this situation, he could come out of there at any time. [] How can we not help him? I find the Australian governments position entirely unacceptable and one that makes me ashamed to Australian.
