Shelter Dog With No Time Left Reaches Out Her Paw To Ask For Help "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Jon Patel and his wife Kayla werent entirely convinced they wanted a dog. But in early May, Jon went to a local shelter in Jackson, Tennessee, to have a look around.

There was a bunch of pit bulls and cats there, and the dogs were barking and jumping up on the cages, Jon Patel told The Dodo.

But one young pit bull wasnt barking or jumping at all, and she immediately caught Jons attention.

She was just sitting there very calmly while the other dogs were barking their heads off, Jon said. So I went over to her cage, and she stuck her little paw out, and when I reached my hand down, she stuck her little paw out through the cage, and I grabbed it. After that, I called Kayla and said, Weve got to get this dog.

The Patels learned that the pit bulls former owner had surrendered her, claiming that she was no longer cute.

Once she grew out of being a puppy, they just abandoned her there, Jon said. A lot of people get them [pit bulls] when theyre puppies because they think theyre cute, and when they grow up, they just abandon them, and thats what happened to her.

To this day, I dont understand why anyone would give her up because shes so sweet and loving, Kayla Patel told The Dodo. Shes never met a person or a tennis ball that she doesnt love immediately.

Trainer Puts Lipstick On Captive Beluga To Make Her Look 'Prettier' "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

A recent video shows a female trainer at a Chinese marine park doing something bizarre to a captive beluga she smears bright red lipstick across the whales mouth, laughing as she does it. According to a news report, the trainer said she was trying to make the whale prettier.

The stunt, which took place at Sun Asia Ocean World, a marine park in the coastal city of Dalian in northeastern China, was captured on video and released on a popular Chinese social media site earlier this month. The video got a lot of views it was played more than 100,000 times before being deleted this week, according to a news report. However, the video made some people very unhappy.

I cant believe people can do such things to make themselves popular, one commenter wrote before the video was deleted, according to Metro.

Another commenter asked, Is it safe to put lipstick on a whale? Has she thought about that before putting it on?

Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), said she isnt necessarily concerned about the harmful effects of the lipstick if this stunt was a one-time event, the makeup probably didnt cause much physical harm to the animal. Yet Rose is worried about the message this incident sends to the public.

What bothered me most about it, and what bothered me generally about whats going on in China, is that theres no respect shown to the animal, Rose told The Dodo. Its all very anthropomorphic Its just so bizarre to treat the animal like its a canvas to paint on. It showed a very significant lack of respect.

Rose, who has visited several Chinese aquariums and dolphinariums in the past few years, said she unfortunately isnt entirely surprised by the stunt.

Argentinas Ambassador to the United States: Who Is Fernando Oris de Roa? "IndyWatch Feed"

Fernando Julio Oris de Roa, a wealthy agribusinessman who developed an interest in public policy, presented his credentials as Argentinas ambassador to the United States to President Donald Trump on January 24, 2018. Its his first such posting.


Oris de Roa was born November 4, 1952. His great-grandfather, Lino Oris de Roa (1845-1920), emigrated to Argentina from Spain and became an Army officer to helped conquer to Araucanian people in the Patagonian region in the 1870s.


Fernando Oris de Roa began his career at Continental Cereals in 1970, and rose to become its president in 1987. He left the company in 1992 and the following year led a group of investors who purchased San Miguel, a failing lemon producer and processor. Oris de Roa turned the company into the largest lemon producer in the world, but his methods made enemies in the United States. In 2000, he made a deal with U.S. citrus grower Sunkist to export Argentine lemons to the United States and have them labeled and marketed by Sunkist. This did not sit well with lemon growers in California and Arizona who saw their market share and profits threatened.


In 1999, Oris de Roa co-wrote the book Emotional Solvency: Learning to Generate Well-Being with Mara Carmen Gear and Ernesto Csar Liendo. A few years later, he took time out from his career to earn a Masters in public policy from Harvards Kennedy School of Government in 2003. Following that, Oris de Roa founded the poultry company Avex and set up a chicken growing and processing plant to concentrate on the export market. At its height, the Avex plant killed 75,000 chickens a day. He was also the president of the poultry company Los Valientes.


Oris de Roa served on the board of directors of Patagonia Gold before resigning in 2006. He became non-executive director of Orocobre Limited in June 2010, an Australian company that mines lithium and borax in Argentina.


Oris de Roa was made director of Expofrut, a pear and apple processor, in 2011. That year, a seasonal worker for Expofrut, Daniel Solano, disappeared after being arrested. Solano had protested labor fraud at Expofrut in which the company was accused of withholding half of workers salaries. President Maurici Macris appointment of Oris de Roas as ambassador in November 2017 was criticized because of his ties to the still-unsolved disappearance of Solano.


In 2011, Oris de Roa founded Investors Toolbox, a venture capital and private equity firm. He created Bravo Charabon, another agricultural firm, in 2013. He was director of Advantage Lithium until January 2018.

Ich wei ja nicht, welche "Sicherheitsforscher" ihr da gefragt habt, aber ich zumindest vertrete die Gegenposition. Wenn du als Verlag es nicht hinkriegst, einen ordentlich abgesicherten Mailserver hinzustellen, dann solltest du den Verlag zumachen und nicht die Mail zu Google schieben. Mails bei einem Verlag beschlagnahmen oder trojanisieren ist deutlich schwieriger fr eine Regierung und ihre Handlanger als bei Google.

Das ist aber leider kein Einzelfall. nytimes: google. latimes: cnn: proofpoint.

Abgesehen vom Spiegel ist aber die Konzentration der Medien in Deutschland auf so wenige Eigentmer vorangeschritten, dass die ganzen Konglomerate immerhin ihre eigenen Konzern-Server haben (bei Gruner+Jahr, Burda und MSH).

Zur deutschen Medienkonzentration empfehle ich brigens die aktuelle Anstalt.

Wenn man die Mail immer ordentlich Ende-zu-Ende verschlsselt, ist es natrlich egal, ob die bei Google oder im eigenen Serverraum liegt. Aber das macht ja keiner. Die heulen lieber alle rum, dass das nicht benutzerfreundlich genug ist.

Man stelle sich mal vor, jemand verweigere im Winter das Gehstegkehren mit der Begrndung, das sei ihm nicht benutzerfreundlich genug, und dann kmen andere zu Schaden!

Last night the Saudi coalition launched its attack on the city of Hodeidah in Yemen. Hodeidah is the only Yemeni harbor on the Red Sea coast that can take large vessels. It is ruled by the Houthi who in 2014 took over the capital Sanaa and disposed of the Saudi installed Hadi government. 90% of the food for the 18 million people living in Houthi controlled areas comes through Hodeidah.

Saudi-owned satellite news channels and later state media announced the battle had begun, citing military sources. They also reported coalition airstrikes and shelling by naval ships.The initial battle plan appeared to involve a pincer movement. Some 2,000 troops who crossed the Red Sea from an Emirati naval base in the African nation of Eritrea landed west of the city with plans to seize Hodeidas port, Yemeni security officials said.

Emirati forces with Yemeni troops moved in from the south near Hodeidas airport, while others sought to cut off Houthi supply lines to the east, the officials said.

The port is now classified as a zone of active military conflict. Prolonged fighting may well destroy the port infrastructure. Even if the Saudi coalition forces take and reopen it they will continue to block food supplies for the central highlands of Yemen. They want to starve the Houthis into submission.

The attack from the south includes 3,000 to 5,000 troops under the command of Tariq Sale, a cousin of the recently killed former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh. They have been equipped with trucks and new weapons by the UAE. More forces are on their way from Aden and Taiz. They are supported by Emirati artillery, tanks and Saudi aerial bombing. The Saudi coalition forces are commanded by former officers from Australia, the U.S. and UK who have been hired by the UAE.

The New York Times editors do not want to understand the real problem with this attack:

A coalition led by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia is poised to attack the Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah, the home to 600,000 Yemenis and the lifeline for humanitarian aid that sustains most of the countrys people.

Experts have predicted that 250,000 people could be killed or displaced in the offensive.

De entrada la poltica de subordinacin e integracin estadounidense que se ha seguido en las ltimas tres dcadas por los gobiernos neoliberales estara cuestionada realmente y se buscara que Mxico recuperar su soberana en la definicin de su poltica exterior y su liderazgo y apoyo a los pases centroamericanos y del Caribe, principalmente.

AMLO no ha dejado claro cual ser el papel de Mxico ante planes geoestratgicos construidos por el capital trasnacional como el Plan Mesoamrica (antes Plan Puebla Panam) y menos an como visualiza el impacto de las Zonas Econmicas Especiales que se ponen en marcha y que implican el dominio de mercados y bienes naturales estratgicos en Centroamrica y el sureste mexicano. Lo relevante es que s Mxico y Canad tienen dificultades en la renegociacin del Tratado de Libre Comercio de Amrica del Norte, peores desafos se avizoran para los pases de Centroamrica que han concretado acuerdos comerciales con Estados Unidos.

Y es ah donde Centroamrica destaca de manera importante como socio comercial mexicano. Por ejemplo, las exportaciones de 2009-2014 por la aduana fronteriza con Guatemala en Ciudad Hidalgo se incrementaron rotundamente de 700 mil toneladas en 2009 a ms de 6 millones de toneladas en 2014, manteniendo Mxico un supervit comercial impresionante. Entre las empresas que cruzan la frontera de Mxico-Guatemala para introducir sus mercancas a Amrica Central destacan Terniun de Mxico, el Grupo Bananero de la Frontera, el Grupo Cemex Internacional, Truper, el Grupo Deacero, Arnecom, Kellogs, Colgate Palmolive, entre otras. S se analizan las exportaciones mexicanas se ubicar que son principalmente productos manufacturados los que ingresan a territorio centroamericano tales como tapas de plstico, manufacturas de fundicin de hierro, candados, clavos, estufas, latas de aluminio, refrigeradores, conductores elctricos, etc. A ello se suma la presencia de las grandes televisoras privadas mexicanas -Televisa y Tv Azteca- en el mercado centroamericano.

Mientras que las importaciones mexicanas son principalmente de cerveza, alimentos y productos relacionados con aceites como los de la Palma Africana.  Destacan empresas como Compaa Cervecera del Trpico, Sigma Alimentos, Industrializadora Oelofinos, Cargill Mxico, etc. Muchas de ellas empresas que funcionan tambin en Mxico pero que se han instalado en Centroamrica aprovechando facilidades fiscales y de explotacin de la mano de obra....

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. The Cherokee Nation is accepting applications through June 29 for the 2018 Clothing Assistance Program. The tribes clothing voucher program helps Cherokee families purchase new clothes for school-aged children for the upcoming school year.

Last year the tribe helped nearly 6,500 students, grades K-12, from across the tribes 14-county jurisdiction prepare for the first day of school with gift cards totaling $650,000.

To be eligible for the program, students must be age 5 before Sept. 1, 2018, be a Cherokee Nation citizen, live within the 14-county jurisdiction and meet additional income guidelines.

Once parents have provided the necessary paperwork and been verified by the tribe, the parents receive a $100 gift card for every school-aged child in the home.

This year, applications can be downloaded and printed from the school clothing voucher icon on can also be picked up at any Cherokee Nation Human Services field office or the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Masterpiece Ruling Is A Win For Free Speech, If Nothing Else "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Supreme Courts decision in Masterpiece Cake was barely out before the battle over its significance began. Was it a bold affirmation of religious liberty or a narrow rebuke of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission? Are professionals such as Christian bakers and wedding photographers free to follow their conscience, or do those who seek to compel them to participate in same-sex marriages simply need to issue commands without scorn for their religious views?

The truth is somewhere in between. The ruling firmly rejects the idea the Constitution ought to provide less protection for speech or religious beliefs that are deemed offensive or hateful. But it is perfectly consistent with the weak protections for religious liberty ushered in by the Rehnquist Court. The case forestalls further erosion of religious freedom and free speech. It does provide robust new protections. Those who want stronger judicial guarantees of religious freedom may need to turn to state courts.

Lets start with the good news. There is a growing view on the left that the demands of inclusivity and diversity operate as an important qualification of First Amendment values. Certain views promiscuously called hate speech are said to marginalize historically disfavored groups and must be silenced in order to include the views of these now protected groups. New York Universitys Ulrich Baer, for example, has argued that society, presumably through the state, must balance the inherent value of a given view with the obligation to ensure that other members of a given community can participate in discourse as fully recognized members of the community.

This view has not yet made much headway in the courts and Justice Anthony Kennedy emphatically rejected it. Citing West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette, the Supreme Court reaffirmed that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion. If the Masterpiece ruling did no more than make clear that noxious ideas of speech equality and the need to police hate speech are inconsistent with the First Amendment, it is an important accomplishment. Stopping bad law in its tracks is part of making good law.

But what this will mean for the religious liberty of those who claim that their faith precludes them from participating in some obligation imposed by progressive government is less clear. Kennedys decision continues the relatively shallow protection of free exercise charted by the Supreme Court in Employment Division v Smith. In that case, the Court made clear that neutral laws of general applicability pass constitutional muster, even if they substantially burden religious practice. We even have a contract that was signed by local management but which has not been recognized by the corporate office.

Philippines/China: Senate Minority Leader says time to review policy of appeasement toward China "IndyWatch Feed War"

The government should review its policy of appeasement and accommodation toward China, according to Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, saying that such a stance did not necessarily translate into economic benefits for the country.

Drilon issued the statement amid reports of increasing Chinas militarization of the South China Sea conflict and of its coast guards taking of Filipino fishermens catch on Scarborough Shoal.

According to Drilon, President Rodrigo Duterte should reevaluate his policy of appeasement toward China as records showed that it was not resulting in increase in trade and investments and in tourist arrivals in the country.

I think the government should review the policy of appeasement and accommodation on China, Drilon said during the Kapihan sa Senado forum.

Drilon cited the case of Vietnam which had been vocal in asserting its rights and condemning China for its aggressiveness in staking its claim to the disputed waters, a region believed to be holding vast reserves of natural resources.

Drilon said that foreign direct investments from China for the year 2017 stood at $31 million, very minimal compared to the $600 million from Japan and $160 from the United States.

Vietnam, in 2017, got from Chinese direct investment was US$2.170 billion contrasted to our US$31 million. That indicates the non-connection between the policy of appeasement as contrasted to Vietnams policy of confrontation, he said.

Bilateral trade between the Philippines and China stood at $21.94 billion in 2016 while that between Vietnam and China was at $71.85 billion, he said....

The article has serious conceptual flaws as well as factual inaccuracies that mischaracterize and do a disservice to movements for justice, and, as a result, make accusations of marginalizing Jews that are not rooted in reality.

To say, as the author does in her article, that As a paradigm, intersectionality has failed Jews makes little sense. As a lens through which to understand multiple dimensions of power where and how they do or dont intersect or connect intersectionality does not fail any group.

Further, the author writes, Intersectionality would dictate that the oppression of Palestinians is much worse than the oppression of Jews, and thus a much higher priority. It is at the end of the day a hierarchical structure, one that creates a hierarchy of oppression and determines levels of threat.

Intersectionality, a term coined by legal scholar Kimberl Crenshaw, is precisely not about promoting hierarchies of oppression (thereby leaving out the Jews), but is a framework an analytic tool that focuses on the multiple effects and overlap of structural oppressions among communities that have been impacted by injustice.

In What is Intersectionality and Why Do You Keep Insisting that Movements Must Be Intersectional? by Evonnia Woods, the author makes clear that:

China Warns US Trade Deals Off If Tariff Hike Goes Ahead "IndyWatch Feed War"

Beijing (TNA)  Chinas government renewed its threat Thursday to scrap deals with Washington aimed at defusing a sprawling trade dispute as the White House prepared to release a list of Chinese goods targeted for tariff hikes.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on up to $150 billion of Chinese goods in response to complaints about Beijings trade surplus and technology policy. As part of that, the White House is due to issue a list on Friday of $50 billion of Chinese goods targeted for a 25 percent tariff.

Beijing has promised to buy more American soybeans, natural gas and other exports but warned after June 3 talks between US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Chinas top economic official, Vice Premier Liu He, that all deals were off if Trumps threatened tariffs went ahead, AP reported.

We made clear that if the US rolls out trade sanction including the imposition of tariffs, all outcomes reached by the two sides in terms of trade and economy will not come into effect, said a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang. I just want to repeat this point today.

Beijing also has announced plans to cut import duties on autos and some consumer goods and to ease limits on foreign ownership in auto manufacturing, insurance and some other industries, though those dont directly address US complaints.

Chinese Hackers Carried Out Country-Level Watering Hole Attack "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Libya: Oil ports closed, evacuated due to attacks by armed brigades "IndyWatch Feed War"

The major Libyan oil ports of Ras Lanuf and Es Sider were closed and evacuated on Thursday due to attacks by armed brigades opposed to the powerful eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, causing a production loss of 240,000 barrels per day (bpd).

At least one storage tank at Ras Lanuf terminal was set alight, an engineer told Reuters. Libyas National Oil Corporation (NOC) declared force majeure on loadings from both terminals, according to a document seen by Reuters.

The clashes between forces loyal to Haftars Libyan National Army (LNA) and rival armed groups were taking place south of Ras Lanuf, where the LNA was targeting its opponents with air strikes, local sources said.

The LNA took control of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf along with other oil ports in Libyas oil crescent in 2016, allowing them to reopen after a long blockade and significantly lifting Libyas oil production.

More than half the storage tanks at both terminals were badly damaged in previous fighting and have yet to be repaired, though there have been regular loadings from Es Sider.

Libyas National Oil Corporation (NOC) said it had evacuated staff from the two terminals for their safety. The production loss was around 240,000 bpd and the entry of a tanker due at Es Sider on Thursday was postponed, it said.

A military source said the three-pronged attack was launched by the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB), a group that has previously tried to take the oil crescent and advance on Benghazi, which has been fully controlled by Haftar since late last year.

Ibrahim Jathran, who headed an armed group that blockaded the terminals for more than two years before being forced out by the LNA, appeared in a video posted on social media announcing the start of a campaign.

The curious Cuba-China-Russia conspiracy theory promoted by the New York Times "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Readers may recall my post from back in February about the mysterious sounds that were causing headaches (literally) to US embassy personnel in Cuba. It led to all manner of speculations about the Cubans themselves unleashing, or allowing some other nation to unleash, some high tech Cold War-type sonar devices on them. The fact that the evidence produced was highly vague and that the Cubans had no motive for doing such things did not stop the wild speculations.

Well, now it appears that US embassy personnel at a consulate in China are experiencing similar symptoms and Matt Taibbi writes that the New York Times has ratcheted the conspiracy theories up to 11, exploiting the fact that the US public will believe pretty much anything about a nation that is considered to be an enemy.

The truth is we know nothing about what is causing these events. The only thing researchers have been able to determine is that those afflicted seem to have damage that resembles concussive brain injury.

That is terrifying and bizarre. Some previously unknown environmental condition, terrorists or space aliens, for that matter, seem as likely an explanation as an international conspiracy.

Not according to the Times. Noting that the Havana episode roiled relations with Cuba last year, the paper wrote:

But with Americans now exhibiting similar symptoms in Guangzhou, American officials have raised suspicions about whether other countries, perhaps China or Russia, might be to blame.

Remember, this is the same newspaper that last year was telling us that if these illnesses were caused by a foreign actor, such attacks couldnt have been pulled off without the host country being involved.

So what are we talking about now? A Chinese-Russian conspiracy? Or a Cuban-Chinese conspiracy? The two nationalities have previously conspired to create excellent restaurants in New York, after all. Or is it a trifecta, a Cuban-Chinese-Russian conspiracy?

What exactly would be the benefit to any of these countries but particularly Cuba, a small, economically struggling island nation desperate to restore normal trade relations with America in doing this?

What would any of them gain in using a space age, undetectable weapon to cause perplexing brain injuries specifically to American and Canadian diplomats?

Yemen Faces Intense Bombardment from Air, Land, and Sea

After weeks of intense deliberation between U.S. and Gulf allies while experts urged against military attacks, the coalition in Yemen launched a coordinated advance on Hodeidah port. The United Arab Emirates appears to be leading the operation from the coastline with warships while intense Saudi airstrikes rain down from the skies.

Eyewitnesses in Hodeidah reported fierce bombing attacks in several locations along Yemens west coast: 30 in less than half an hour. Ships also bombarded Yemeni fortifications along the coastline. Meanwhile, U.S.-Saudi coalition troops attempted to advance on the ground especially near a strategic airport.

Saudi Arabia has indiscriminately bombed Yemen on a daily basis for the past three years. Several of the attacks in Hodeidah today hit a civilians farm. In Saada province, bombs targeted a civilians car killing two as well as two homes. An air raid in Sanaa also destroyed a home.

Its unclear exactly how much support the United States is providing to the Saudi coalition for the Hodeidah advance. Prior to the operation, the Abu Dhabi requested Washington increase military support likely in the form of airstrikes, warships, and possibly even ground troops.

The Israeli military said, the New York Times reports "IndyWatch Feed War"

New York Times reporter David M. Halbfinger didnt know whether the demonstrations in Gaza were peaceful protests or violent riots.  So he embedded himself with Israeli snipers poised on the perimeter of Gaza concentration camp to find out (At Gaza Protests: Kites, Drones, Gas, Guns and the Occasional Bomb, June 8, 2018).

One might suppose if he wanted an answer to that question, the obvious place to go would be among the demonstrators.  But never mind.

According to human rights organizations, the weekly Gaza demonstrations have been overwhelmingly nonviolent.  But from day one, Halbfinger and his Times colleagues have recurrently portrayed them as armed confrontations in which Israeli snipers return the fire of protesters.  They rely on official Israeli statements that are quoted without demurral, without further investigation, and without independent corroboration from, say, human rights monitors:

The Israelis said they also exchanged fire with two gunmen across the fence (March 30, 2018);

Israel . . . said others had thrown firebombs at its soldiers . . . . Israels Kan Radio reported that at least eight attempts were made to plant explosives along the fence (April 7);

Colonel Conricus said there had been . . . several attempted attacks in which Palestinians hurled explosives, including a pipe bomb, at Israeli soldiers. . . . Palestinian journalists memorialized Yasser Murtaja, a colleague killed during the protests a week earlier. The Israeli military said he was an officer in the military wing of Hamas (April 13);

Israel said . . . it had repulsed several unsuccessful attempts by Hamas to have armed fighters slip across into Israel and wreak havoc . . . At least three separate squads of armed fighters tried to use the commotion and smoke and dynamics of the riots as concealment, and then launched an attack on the fence, said Lt. Col. This time we were able to do a relatively better job, because the software was able to run in realtime and does a relatively good job of detecting violent individuals, says Amarjot Singh , a Ph.D. student in deep learning at the University of Cambridge.

The drone surveillance system developed by Singh and his colleagues remains far from ready for primetime. The call for a ban on Kasperskys software among the members of the European Union is part of a report on cyber defense written by Estonian MEP Urmas Paet of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Calls on the EU to perform a comprehensive review of software, IT and communications equipment and infrastructure used in the institutions in order to exclude potentially dangerous programmes and devices, and to ban the ones that have been confirmed as malicious, such as Kaspersky Lab. states the report.

The European eurocrats have adopted the A8-0189/2018 motion that could ban the products of the security giant from European Union institutions.

In response, Kaspersky Lab CEO, Eugene Kaspersky, announced the company would be suspending its collaboration with Europol and the NoMoreRansom initiative.

A small army of pro-Israeli watchdog organizations keeps a close eye on everything Palestinian academics do and say, every Tweet they post and group they join.  Those who go too far in criticizing Israel or standing up for Palestine may pay with their jobs, their academic standing, their future admission and employment opportunities.

All these groups claim they are defending Jewish students from anti-Semitism. In reality, the watchdogs rarely address anti-Jewish incidents there arent many to address but they will be all over anyone who calls out Israeli crimes.

Tesla fatal crash: 'autopilot' mode sped up car before driver killed, report finds

A Tesla driving in "autopilot" mode crashed in March when the vehicle sped up and steered into a concrete barrier, according to a new report on the fatal collision, raising fresh concerns about Elon Musk's technology.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that four seconds before the 23 March crash on a highway in Silicon Valley, which killed Walter Huang, 38, the car stopped following the path of a vehicle in front of it. Three seconds before the impact, it sped up from 62mph to 70.8mph, and the car did not brake or steer away, the NTSB said.

[...] The NTSB report [...] has once again raised serious safety questions about the limits and performance of the autopilot technology, which is meant to assist drivers and has faced growing scrutiny from experts and regulators. Mark Fong, an attorney for Huang's family, also said the report appeared to "contradict Tesla's characterization" of the collision.

The Mountain View Fire Department applied about 200 gallons of water and foam to extinguish the post-crash fire. The battery reignited five days after the crash in an impound lot and was extinguished by the San Mateo Fire Department.

The colonies that would become the United States decided to take over Canada in 1690 (and failed, again).

They got the British to help them in 1711 (and failed, yet again).

General Braddock and Colonel Washington tried again in 1755 (and still failed, except in the ethnic cleansing perpetrated and the driving out of the Acadians and the Native Americans).

The British and U.S. attacked in 1758 and took away a Canadian fort, renamed it Pittsburgh, and eventually built a giant stadium across the river dedicated to the glorification of ketchup.

George Washington sent troops led by Benedict Arnold to attack Canada yet again in 1775.

An early draft of the U.S. Constitution provided for the inclusion of Canada, despite Canadas lack of interest in being included.

Benjamin Franklin asked the British to hand Canada over during negotiations for the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Just imagine what that might have done for Canadian healthcare and gun laws! Or dont imagine it. Britain did hand over Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. (At least they know theyre free!)

In 1812 the U.S. proposed to march into Canada and be welcomed as liberators. They werent. But the Canadians didnt burn the White House. That was done by British troops that included men recently escaped from U.S. slavery. Killing some of those escapees is celebrated in the U.S. National Anthem, as is the fact that during a battle in which people died, a flag survived.

The U.S. supported an Irish attack on Canada in 1866.

I was dicking around on my phone before showering last Friday when a news pop up alerted me to Anthony Bourdains passing. At that point I knew roughly two things about him: he was some kind of bad-boy chef on cooking/traveling reality shows, and he said the following about Henry Kissinger:

This was in 2001. The quote was unearthed this year, went viral and, once it caught his attention, Bourdain refused to back off statements made so long ago:

Donald Trump has had quite a week. At the G7 summit in Canada the US president repudiated the rules-based international order, preferring to throw a tantrum on trade. By Tuesday, he was discarding longstanding security guarantees to Americas east Asian allies at his headline-grabbing talks in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The security of Europe and east Asia has been underwritten for 70 years by a US alliance system. Mr Trump is intent on dismantling it.

It takes a special talent even for this president to recast Canada as an adversary before embracing as a new-found friend a brutal dictator with a recently acquired nuclear arsenal. We should know not to measure Mr Trump against the usual norms. The chilling significance of these actions resides in the clarity they bring to his intentions.

China and Russia are throwing their hats in the air to celebrate the presidents retreat from international leadership. Absent from the Singapore summit, Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, was nonetheless a big winner. In Mr Trumps world of everyone for themselves, China will replace the US as the pre-eminent power in east Asia. Japan, Taiwan and, in time, South Korea itself, may choose to take a tip from Mr Kim. If you want to be safe, build a bomb.

G7 leaders have been inclined to make a case that Mr Trump can be managed. Frances president Emmanuel Macron applied flattery. Japans Shinzo Abe wooed the president on the golf course. Britains Theresa May dangles an invitation for tea with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. The be-nice strategy has now been derailed.

Donald Tusk, the president of the EU, speculated the other day as to whether the western political community faced a cyclical or a structural threat from US unilateralism. Mr Tusk is a thoughtful politician, someone worth listening to. He can also be over-generous. The US president has answered his question loud and clear: he disdains any such political community.

Earlier this month, the War Resisters League launched a discussion series focused on zones of conflict that are neglected in American anti-war circles. The first event centered on Kashmir, the site of the worlds longest running military occupation, dating back to the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Both countries make territorial claims in the region that clash with Kashmiri demands for self-determination and drive settler colonial violence. The South Asia Solidarity Initiative, or SASI, used this opportunity to draw attention to violence in the region, such as the brutal rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano, a Kashmiri Muslim girl.

Asifa was a member of the Bakarwal Muslim community, which relies on herding livestock in the Kathua district of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Her alleged perpetrators were Hindu nationalists. She was kidnapped in January and held in a local Hindu temple, where she was drugged, gang raped and beaten to death.

The identities of the alleged perpetrators were confirmed in March by a Special Investigation Team. Reports say they meant to terrorize her community in order to drive them from the area. ...

Diplomacy is about getting other countries to do what you want them to do. Without Chinas help, Donald Trump cannot hope to enforce his deal with Kim Jong Un. Eliminating North Koreas nuclear arsenal is Mr Trumps biggest goal his reputation for dealmaking rests almost exclusively on it. Yet reaching that prize undercuts a key element of his America First agenda. On Friday, his administration will unveil the latest list of targeted Chinese goods. A trade war with China could prove disastrous to the North Korea agreement. Mr Trump is thus faced with a choice. Should he wreck the deal of the century by escalating Americas trade dispute with China? Or should he confine his trade belligerence to Americas allies?

It says a lot about Mr Trumps volatility that few have much clue which path he will take. The first choice picking a fight with China when he most needs its help would vindicate those who think Mr Trump is irrational. It would be like putting his money on a horse then slipping arsenic into its oats. China would lift its sanctions on North Korea. Since 90 per cent of North Koreas trade is with China, that would end its isolation. Without China, there would have been no maximum pressure. Without Xi Jinpings prodding, Mr Kim may not have even agreed to this weeks summit.

Such a move would confirm the diplotainment theory of Mr Trumps motives. Rather than caring about outcomes, Mr Trump lives for day-to-day ratings. His meeting with Kim Jong Un was the epitome of reality TV diplomacy. Simply by holding the summit, his prize was achieved. The celebrity leaders met and made diplomatic history. On his return from Singapore, Mr Trump tweeted: There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. If Mr Trump really believed that, it would be hard to retain much hope that he is rational. North Korea has just the same nuclear capacity after the summit as it had beforehand. Evidence of Mr Trumps inability to fix means to ends would come if he chose now to step up his trade war with China. As the Chinese could tell him, a man who chases two rabbits catches neither.

La Comisin Nacional de los Salarios Mnimos (Conasami) debe desaparecer, por ser la responsable de implementar desde hace casi 30 aos la an vigente estrategia econmica en materia salarial que ha llevado a la pobreza a la mayor parte de los trabajadores mexicanos, consider el doctor Miguel Santiago Reyes Hernndez, director del Observatorio de Salarios de la Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de Mxico y Puebla.

Y es que la Conasami no cumple su papel, establecido en la Constitucin, de hacer estudios y anlisis sobre condiciones y costos de vida, productividad, generacin de riqueza y distribucin de la misma, por regiones y en todo el pas; para con base en estos criterios determinar los aumentos salariales.

Lo nico que hace la Comisin es reunirse una vez al ao y establecer el salario mnimo con base en las expectativas de inflacin, lo que amarra a todos los dems salarios de la economa (el llamado efecto faro); adems de enviar a los empresarios el mensaje de que el sector privado tampoco debe hacer estudios sobre la productividad y condiciones de vida de sus trabajadores para fijar los aumentos salariales.

Para romper ese efecto faro, la Conasami tendra que vincular los salarios a la productividad y rentabilidad de las empresas, y establecer como premisa que los trabajadores no pierdan nunca poder adquisitivo, para lo cual es necesario contar previamente con un ndice de costo de vida.

Sin embargo, el organismo no hace lo anterior e incluso afirma que el efecto faro, la atadura de los salarios al salario mnimo, se ha ido diluyendo; algo que niega el Banco de Mxico, el cual establece que el efecto faro es del 85%, es decir, que un incremento en el salario mnimo real del 1% ocasiona un incremento de 0.85% en las revisiones salariales de los trabajadores, explic Reyes Hernndez.

El tambin integrante del Instituto de Investigacin para el Desarrollo con Equidad (EQUIDE) de la IBERO dijo adems que la Comisin Nacional de los Salarios Mnimos opera de manera discrecional al no informar con qu criterios se determinan los aumentos salariales -si se bas en la productividad, rentabilidad y crecimiento de la economa-, ni dar a conocer qu se discute en sus reuniones; y nicamente publica el aumento al salario mnimo.

Asimismo, al estar integrado el Consejo de Representantes de la Conasami solamente por la cpula del sector empresarial y el corporativismo mexicano (Confederacin de Trabajadores de Mxico y Congreso del Trabajo), en realidad no est velando por los intereses de la mayora de los trabajadores y empresarios de Mxico.

En 2015, Mohammed Arshad, de 28 aos, emigr a Arabia Saudita desde Chittagong (Bangladesh) con grandes expectativas. Su plan consista en construir una casa decente, encargarse de la educacin de su hermana y encontrar un mejor tratamiento para su madre, enferma de cncer.

Al llegar, una agencia de trabajo le ofreci un puesto como dependiente en una pequea empresa minorista por 2.000 riales saudes (aproximadamente 533 dlares USD, unos 452 euros) al mes. Aunque el salario era inferior al que la agencia le haba prometido en Chittagong, Mohammed estaba dispuesto a adaptarse, sobre todo porque haba pedido prestados 300.000 takas (3.500 USD, 2.966 euros) a amigos y bancos para poder obtener su permiso de trabajo.

Todo iba bien. O al menos eso crea Mohammed. Un buen da del pasado mes de noviembre su supervisor le inform de que ya no tena trabajo. Me dijo que mi puesto de trabajo haba sido nacionalizado, nos explic Mohammed.

El caso de Mohammed no es un caso aislado. Though the use of mycelium (the interlocking root system that results in forests of mushrooms) in clothing, bed sheets, and even wedding dresses is nothing new, these newly-developed sandals, which are both fashionable and sustainable, are.

The fungi footwear was developed by Jillian Silverman, an apparel graduate student of the University of Delaware. She designed a prototype shoe that combines mushrooms, agriculture waste, and fabric scraps. Silverman explained,

A lot of fashion fabrics are not compostable or it takes a really long time for them to break down. Everything is natural, everything is biodegradable, nontoxic. Its a perfect solution to reducing the impacts of textile waste, reducing toxic inputs and using all renewable inputs.

After learning that mushroom mycelium can be used in everything from packaging materials to building materials, Silverman figured it could also be implemented into fashion products. It helped that the university she attended is conveniently close to Kennet Square, Pennsylvania, which is the the mushroom capital of the world. The European Central Bank saw no cause for wider concern from recent political upheavals in Italy, though new governments in the euro zone should be careful not to undermine its institutions, bank President Mario Draghi said on Thursday.

The euro and Italian government bonds have been on a roller-coaster ride in recent weeks as Italy went from a political vacuum to a government of anti-establishment parties that some investors feared could push the country out of the single currency.

While bond yields remained at fairly elevated levels, it was a pretty local episode, Draghi told a post-policy meeting news conference.

We havent seen really any redenomination risk. Contagion was not significant if (there was) any at all.

Senior members of Italys cabinet have sought to reassure markets in recent days by reaffirming their commitment to the single currency and playing down pledges to spend more and cut taxes.

According to reports in the Italian media Draghi, an Italian, personally pleaded with a senior lawmaker from the right-wing League now in coalition with the 5-Star Movement for the creation of a government.

This ended a four-month domestic political impasse and averted early elections that could have turned into a referendum on Italys euro membership, although the new government has already become embroiled in a diplomatic row over its tough stance on migration with France.

Draghi said the emergence of new governments with different views should not be dramatized. We have 19 countries. We are bound to have 19 elections every now and then.

But differences should be discussed within the existing treaties.

Its important that these discussions do not destroy the progress thats been achieved after a lot of sacrifice with a language that does not destroy (that) progress.

Aircraft burnt to ash by angry tribesmen in PNGs Southern Highlands Province. "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

One of Papua New Guineas pride, a Desh-8 aircraft which is proudly acclaimed as the nations flag carrier among other Air Niugini fleets was abruptly burnt down to ash by disgruntled tribemen in Mendi, the capital of Southern Highlands province.

The aircraft was doing its normal routine to Mendi airstrip when it was ambushed by aggrieved tribesmen who were disappointed over a court decision on an election petition case for the Southern Highlands provincial seat.

According to reports from witnesses on the ground, the aircraft landed at the Mendi airstrip around midday was was due for takeoff back to Port Moresby when the aggrieved tribesmen stormed into the tarmac and blocked off the plane with a vehicle and set alight the plane.

The Captain and the co-pilot along with the flight attendants were brought to safety with no injury sustained.

However, they are recovering from the ordeal as it was the first of its kind in the countrys history. The images of the buring of the plane has gone viral on social media and reached other international news organisations.

If you have a Raspberry Pi and have any interest in its peripherals, you may be familiar with the grinning pirate logo of the British company, Pimoroni. The Sheffield, UK based outfit first established a niche for itself as one of the go-to places for much of the essentials of Pi ownership, and has extended its portfolio beyond the Pi into parts, boards, and components across the spectrum of electronic experimentation. Their products are notable for their distinctive and colourful design language as well as their  constant exploration of new ideas, and they have rapidly become one of those companies to watch in our sphere. On our way up to Newcastle for Maker Faire UK, we passed close enough to the Pimoroni HQ to be able to ask nicely if we could drop in and have a tour.

A newly installed TransCanada natural gas pipeline exploded early Thursday in the remote Nixon Ridge area of Marshall County in West Virginia.

Civilian casualties documented and verified by OHCHR in December 2017 were three times higher than the monthly average for the year. Governorates most affected by casualties in 2017 include Taizz (26%) where there has been intense, ongoing conflict, Al-Hudaydah (18%) where military offensives have recently reached as well as Saada (11%). Based on data from the recently launched Civilian Impact Monitoring Project of the Protection Cluster (see In Focus section below), 35% of civilian casualties monitored had occurred when people were in their own homes or farms, 17% while at the market or other civilian gatherings, and 12% while they were driving, compared to only 5% who were directly exposed to armed conflict. Likewise, 74% of incidents resulting in civilian impact were caused by airstrikes, compared to 16% due to shelling, 4% armed clashes, 3% small arms fire and 2% unexploded ordinances.

In recent days, Google made the decision to further alienate a plurality of Americans gun owners and the gun industry by banning words like gun-grips and scopes and sights from its list of acceptable AdWords. The ban will take effect later this month, as Breitbart News AWR Hawkins reports.

In addition, the search behemoth will be banning all AdWords that are related to 3D printing of guns or gun parts, which will include instructions on 3D printing of any and all parts for firearms.

Google made the decision as part of changes to the companys Dangerous Products or Services Policy.

In groupthink fashion, the change to Googles policy comes just a few months after Google-owned YouTube said it would be banning all gun demonstration videos, which in turn followed Facebooks incremental banning of gun ads and sales (and political content that, oddly, seems to include mostly conservative content).

The Google war on guns is a direct attack on gun ownership. Maybe it is time to regulate the internet giants like Google, Facebook, and YouTube and not gun ownership, said Second Amendment Foundation Executive Director Alan Gottlieb in a statement to Breitbart News.

Russia vows consequences after Norway invites more U.S. Marines "IndyWatch Feed War"

Russia vowed on Thursday to retaliate for a plan by Norway to more than double the number of U.S. Marines stationed there.

Oslo announced on Tuesday that it would ask the United States, its NATO ally, to send 700 Marines to train in Norway from 2019, against 330 at present, and said the additional troops would be based closer to the Russian border.

This makes Norway less predictable and could cause growing tensions, triggering an arms race and destabilizing the situation in northern Europe, the Russian Embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.

We see it as clearly unfriendly, and it will not remain free of consequence.

Oslo has grown increasingly concerned about Russia since Moscow annexed of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, while adding that it does not regard its much larger neighbor as a direct threat.

The U.S. Marines were scheduled to leave at the end of this year after an initial contingent arrived in January 2017 to train for winter conditions. They are the first foreign troops to be stationed in Norway since World War Two.

The initial decision to welcome the Marines had prompted Moscow to say it would worsen bilateral relations and escalate tensions on NATOs northern flank.

On Wednesday, Russias Northern Fleet launched a large naval exercise in the Arctic Barents Sea. Later this year, Norway will host its biggest NATO maneuver in decades.

In a report from El Vocero de Puerto Rico, the FBI is investigating several suppliers in a probe launched after former procurement director Yadira Molina filed a lawsuit claiming she faced punishment for reporting illegal activities to the local comptroller.

The investigation has since grown to include several contractors, the news outlet reported, according to Epoch Times.

Carlos Osorio, a spokesman for the FBI in San Juan, told Epoch Times last October the agency received several complaints of alleged corruption in the distribution of relief goods, and that it was required to look into the matter.
