The More Valuable Your Work Is To Society, The Less Youll Be Paid For It "IndyWatch Feed War"

One of the most frequently heard complaints from supporters of the Occupy Wall Street movementparticularly the ones working too much to spend much time in the camps, but who could only show up for marches or to express support on the Webran along the lines of: I wanted to do something useful with my life; work that had a positive effect on other people or, at the very least, wasnt hurting anyone. But the way this economy works, if you spend your working life caring for others, youll end up so underpaid and so deeply in debt you wont be able to care for your own family. There was a deep and abiding sense of rage at the injustice of such arrangements. I began to refer to it, mostly to myself, as the revolt of the caring classes.

Holding Hope Hospital Accountable: How the Western Public Was Led to Aid Islamist Terrorists in Syria "IndyWatch Feed War"

by Steven Sahiounie On April 29 of this year, the Guardian published a feel good story about a Syrian refugee chef in London, who is cooking to support Hope Hospital in Aleppo. The claims in the article bear scrutiny.  For example, theres the claim that .Hope Hospital [] has saved tens of thousands of lives in Aleppo. Another claim is that It is the only pediatric hospital in the Aleppo region, serving more than 250,000 people. From these details, the readers will come away with the impression that Hope Hospital is a worthwhile charity, which is located in Aleppo, Syria and which is the only childrens hospital in the area. However, those claims are not supported by facts. Hope Hospital is not located in the city of Aleppo. The mainstream media covered the battles of East Aleppo for months in 2016, culminating in the December 2016 evacuation of all armed fighters and their families from East Aleppo, and the evacuation of most besieged civilians to West Aleppo, as a result of the Syrian Arab Armys

The Eagles Controversy Could Cost Trump Pennsylvania In 2020 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The sports world continues to respond to President Trumps decision late Monday to disinvite the Philadelphia Eagles from a trip to the White House to celebrate their first Super Bowl championship. Politico reports the Trump Administration thinks the ongoing controversies surrounding NFL players and the National Anthem is a political winner, but the facts suggest otherwise.

I scored an invitation to the Eagles scheduled White House visit last week, and while I still went to the event on Tuesday, I wish that both sides had been able to resolve their differences, so that Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles and others that wanted to visit the White House had an opportunity to do so.

That said, my thoughts upon hearing the news Monday evening immediately turned to the political implications of the sudden cancellation:

France, Germany, Britain formally request exemptions from US Iran sanctions "IndyWatch Feed War"

France, Britain, Germany and the EU on Wednesday sent the United States a joint official request for their companies to be exempt from punitive measures resulting from fresh US sanctions on Iran.

As allies, we expect that the United States will refrain from taking action to harm Europes security interests, said the letter to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

AFP/File | French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said France, Britain, Germany and the EU were asking the US to exempt European businesses doing legitimate trade in Iran from all extraterritorial American sanctions

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said the three countries and the EU were asking the US to exempt European businesses doing legitimate trade in Iran from all extraterritorial American sanctions.

Those businesses must be able to pursue their activities, he wrote on Twitter.

The plea comes as European leaders scramble to save the hard-fought deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015 under which Tehran agreed to limits on its nuclear capacities in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions.

US President Donald Trump announced he was abandoning the deal last month which will mean new sanctions on the Islamic republic and punitive measures for those who trade with it.

Analysts say European firms which have rushed to invest in Iran after the lifting of sanctions over the past three years have the most to lose from the renewed sanctions.

Several major companies including Frances Total and the Netherlands Maersk have already said it will be impossible to stay in Iran once the sanctions are fully reimposed over the next six months, unless they receive explicit exemptions from Washington.

French automaker PSA said Monday that it would pull out of two joint ventures to sell its cars in Iran to avoid the risk of punishing fines.

Ijaw Leaders Protest Irregularities In PIB "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

LAGOS JUNE 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The leaders of oil and gas producing communities in Delta State, have vowed to resist any attempt by the National Assembly to further enslave and impoverished the host communities in the controversial Petroleum Host and Impacted Communities Development Bill.
This was made known in a open letter by Gbaramatu-Egbema-Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front (GEOCCF) to Senate President, dated 4th June, 2018, and signed by Hon. George U. Timinimi (MIoD, MCIArb), President, Chief Bright Abilo, Fredrick Igere, Shandors Tortor, Philemon Ugedi, Chief Freason Dose, Ekio Youpele,.
They insisted that the Petroleum Host Communities Fund should be maintained at ten percent (10%) monthly profit of oil companies as was initially proposed, and totally rejected the paltry 2. 5 % proposal and enormous powers and functions given to oil companies
under the instant bill.
Any attempt to use the instrument of legislation to alter the present structures would result in instability in operations of Chevron Nigeria Limited and other oil companies. The oil companies have no business in determining the emergence of community representatives who manage the host and impacted communities fund. We state clearly that giving oil companies the right to choose those that would be saddled with the responsibility of administering host communities fund would lead to unnecessary meddlesomeness by the companies (settlors) in the internal affairs of communities with the attendant and unthinkable negative consequences....

Inside Obamas secret plot to let Iran skirt sanctions "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access albeit briefly to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so.

An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deals opponents. Amid a tense political climate, Iran hawks in the U.S., Israel and elsewhere argued that the United States was giving far too much to Tehran and that the windfall would be used to fund extremism and other troubling Iranian activity.

The Associated Press

The report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations revealed that under President Barack Obama, the Treasury Department issued a license in February 2016, never previously disclosed, that would have allowed Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman from Omani rials into euros by exchanging them first into U.S. dollars. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the U.S. financial system.

The effort was unsuccessful because American banks themselves afraid of running afoul of U.S. sanctions declined to participate. The Obama administration approached two U.S. banks to facilitate the conversion, the report said, but both refused, citing the reputational risk of doing business with or for Iran.

The Obama administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran, said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, the subcommittees chairman.

Issuing the license was not illegal. Still, it went above and beyond what the Obama administration was required to do under the terms of the nuclear agreement. Under that deal, the U.S. and world powers gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbing its nuclear program. Last month, President Donald Trump declared the U.S. was pulling out of what he described as a disastrou...

Are Wi-Fi hotspots in World Cup Russia host cities secure? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Experts at Kaspersky Lab have evaluated the security of 32,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the 11 Russian cities hosting the World Cup.

The upcoming soccer World Cup represents a privileged target for crooks, hackers, and nation-state actors. It is essential for organizations to take care of any aspect related to the event to protect participants, including travelers using WiFi networks in the host cities.

Experts at Kaspersky Lab have evaluated the security of 32,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the 11 Russian cities hosting the World Cup. We have explained several times, the risks associated with the usage of open WiFi networks, threat actors could monitor traffic to steal sensitive data and launch MITM attacks against the victims to conduct a broad range of malicious activities.

A lack of essential traffic encryption for Wi-Fi networks where official and global activities are taking place such as at locations around the forthcoming FIFA World Cup 2018 offers especially fertile ground for criminals. reads the report published by Kaspersky.

Over a fifth (22.4%) of Wi-Fi hotspots in FIFA World Cup 2018 host cities use unreliable networks. This means that criminals simply need to be located near an access point to grab the traffic and get their hands on user data.

The study involved volunteers who agreed to travel around the host cities searching for public Wi-Fi hotspots. The experts discovered that around 62.4 percent of hotspots are secured via WPA2 encryption, while another 13.5 percent use another, unknown encryption method.

Of course, the level of protection for the secured networks depends on the security settings, such as the strength of the password used to access the hotspot.

Wi-Fi Russia World Cup

The study revealed that the number of secured networks varies from city to city, the researchers evaluated hotspots in 11 host cities.

Saransk was the most secure city with 72 percent of access points using WPA/WPA2, the cities of Samara and Nizhny Novogorod follow with respectively 67 and 66 percent.

Black flag for St. Petersburg, the least secure host city with just 50 percent of hotspots using WPA2 and 37 percent of access points completely unsecured.

It is important to highlight that even WPA2...

Obama Administration Secretly Helped Iran Skirt Financial Sanctions "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Obama administration helped Iran utilize sanctioned oil revenue stranded in a foreign bank account in 2016 while actively misleading Congress about the cooperation, according to the results of a Republican led Senate investigation released Wednesday night.

After signing the 2015 nuclear deal, which unfroze Irans U.S. accounts in exchange for the regimes non-proliferation pledge, the Obama administration publicly maintained that all non-nuclear sanctions barring Iran from operating within the U.S. financial system would remain in place.

Credit Kevin Lamarque/Reuters

Senior U.S. government officials repeatedly testified to Congress that Iranian access to the U.S. financial system was not on the table or part of any deal, congressional investigators wrote in the report.

Despite this pledge to the public and Congress, in February 2016 the administration assisted Tehran in recovering $5.7 billion held in the Bank Muscat in the Persian Gulf state of Oman, according to the report, compiled by the Senates permanent subcommittee on investigations. And, according to the report, administration officials continued to misled Congress after the license was issued.

Even after the specific license was issued, U.S. government officials maintained in congressional testimony that Iran would not be granted access to the U.S. financial system, the report noted.

Under the terms of the nuclear deal, Iran was entitled to access the funds, which were held in Omani rials, a currency that is notoriously difficult to convert. The Obama administration attempted to help the Iranians convert the funds to Euros by issuing a special treasury license to two large U.S. banks empowering them to convert the funds first into dollars and then euros.

Mechanisms: Abrasives "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

In our Mechanisms series, weve featured the fascinating bits and pieces that go into making our mechanical world work. From simple machines such as screws and levers, from springs to couplings, and even more complex mechanisms like zippers and solenoids, weve covered the gamut. But we havent talked about one of the very earliest mechanisms, captured from nature by our clever ancestors to do useful work like grinding grain and shaping materials into tools: grit, sand, abrasives.

Wearing Things Down

When we were kids, summers meant random visits from the ice cream man. Wed run up to the truck, swap sweaty coins for cool treats, and spend a few glorious minutes savoring our purchases. When it was over all too soon, we were left with only a wooden stick to show for it. So naturally, we would spend the next few hours rubbing our sticks on the curbstone, sharpening them as best we could so we could play a rollicking game of Stab or Be Stabbed. It was intuitive to us that something hard and rough like stone could wear away enough of the soft birch wood to fashion the shivs we needed to disappoint our mothers.

Alive and well: Kim Jong-uns uncle was never executed, nor was his girlfriend or military chief; you were lied to "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

PYONGYANG (INTELLIHUB) As it turns out, North Korean leader Kim Jong-uns cousin Jang Song-thaek who once served as Vice Chairman of North Koreas National Defense Commission is alive and well despite the fact that 99 percent of all U.S.-based media outlets reported that he was savagely executed at the behest of the Norths fierce leader by being fed to a pack of extremely hungry hunting dogs.

Thats right, per the usual, state-sponsored outlets which broadcast their propaganda on television sets located inside millions of households and businesses all across America on a daily basis actually lied about Jang Song-thaeks death in what can now only be categorized a failed character assassination.

Believe it or not, it was ex-NBA baller and reality star Dennis Rodman who first reported the fact that Song-thaek was alive after having just stood just feet from both Song-thaek and Kim Jong-un during Rodmans basketball exhibition visit which took place in Pyongyang in early 2014. At the time Song-thaek may have still been acting Chairman of the State Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission of the Workers Party, which explains why he was present on that day.

Palestinian Courage Should Spur International Action "IndyWatch Feed War"

After 70 years, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still unresolved. The conflict simmers for a few years, then erupts again with new massacres and violence. This article describes recent events, the failure of the two state solution and need for a different approach.

In the past couple months, Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers have killed 118 Palestinian protesters and seriously wounded many thousands more. The protesters were unarmed and no threat to the soldiers. Gaza hospitals overflow with victims.

In the wake of this violence, human rights groups filed a legal petition to make it unlawful for Israeli soldiers to fire on unarmed protesters. Last week the Israeli Supreme Court rejected the petition.

Israeli violence is usually portrayed as a response to Palestinian violence, but the reality is the opposite. The sequence of recent events is as follows:

From the end of March til May 25, Palestinians in Gaza protested against their oppression as close as they could get to the border fences. About 118 were killed and many thousands seriously injured by Israeli snipers. They were all shot inside Gaza.

On May 27 28, the Israeli military launched tank mortars at Palestinian military outposts inside Gaza, killing four.

Next day, on May 29, Palestinian militants launched unguided mortars into nearby Israel. Most of them fell harmlessly and there were no Israeli casualties.

Next day, on May 30, Israeli jets and helicopters launched guided missiles and bombs on 65 different locations within Gaza.

Clearly, the violence started with Israelis killing protesters and then militants inside Gaza, but its not portrayed that way. Time magazine began its article with, Palestinian militants bombarded southern Israel.

Pro Israel advocates wish to prevent people from seeing what is really happening. They know the potential damage if people see video such as Israeli snipers celebrating the shooting of unarmed protesters. To prevent this, a proposed law will make it illegal to photograph or video record Israeli soldiers. Palestinian journalists have condemned this attempt to criminalize journalism.

Palestinian youth launch Ghassan Kanafani scholarship, call for submissions "IndyWatch Feed War"

The revolutionary Palestinian writer and political leader Ghassan Kanafani once famously remarked, My political position springs from my being a novelist. In so far as I am concerned, politics and the novel are an indivisible case and I can categorically state that I became politically committed because I am a novelist, not the opposite. Kanafanis words and life offer a searing rebuttal to the white, Western bourgeois idea of literature or art as irreversibly disconnected from political realities (as opposed to being cultural practices embedded within and reflective of these very realities). Kanafanis ideas and example directly influenced literary critic Barbara Harlows concept of resistance literature, which positioned revolutionary literary praxis as the cultural extension of armed liberation struggles against colonial and imperial domination. Yet it is not the political as an abstract category that looms large in the life and work of Kanafani, or even, as strange as it may seem to say, Kanafani himself, so much as a physical place and a peoplethe place, of course, is Palestine and the people, all Palestinians who struggled against Zionist colonization, displacement and dispossession. In fact, Kanafanis literary writings were fundamental in shifting a political and cultural Palestinian consciousness away from highly individualized accounts of colonial devastation towards one of collective identity through resistance.

Thus, when we as the Palestinian Youth Movement launched the Ghassan Kanafani Resistance Arts Scholarship in 2015, our aim was twofold: on the one hand, of course, we sought to commemorate the legacy and spirit of Kanafani himself who, despite his untimely death at the hands of Zionist agents at the age of 34, continues to inspire Palestinians across generations. And we were also seeking to honor the type of artistic/political praxis that Kanafani embodied so seamlessly, one in which the individual life and self inevitably fed into the larger collective liberation struggle. There is, Kanafani taught us, no single Palestinian story, for even the most seemingly isolated moments of dispossession and rupture may evoke a collective resonance. Ours is, and always will be, a shared struggle leading, inevitably toward liberation, true and full.

Open to Palestinians in the U.S. between the ages of 18 to 25, the Ghassan Kanafani Resistance Arts Scholarship is one of several projects by which we in the PYM continue to answer the question of what it would mean to come together as a youth formation that rejects the political and geographic fragmentation imposed by the shameful legacy of the Oslo Accords, to return instead to an earlier vision of...

Higgs Bosons Can be Produced Simultaneously With Top Quarks "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The Higgs boson reveals its affinity for the top quark

New results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC reveal how strongly the Higgs boson interacts with the heaviest known elementary particle, the top quark, corroborating our understanding of the Higgs and setting constraints on new physics.

The Higgs boson interacts only with massive particles, yet it was discovered in its decay to two massless photons. Quantum mechanics allows the Higgs to fluctuate for a very short time into a top quark and a top anti-quark, which promptly annihilate each other into a photon pair. The probability of this process occurring varies with the strength of the interaction (known as coupling) between the Higgs boson and top quarks. Its measurement allows us to indirectly infer the value of the Higgs-top coupling. However, undiscovered heavy new-physics particles could likewise participate in this type of decay and alter the result. This is why the Higgs boson is seen as a portal to new physics.

A more direct manifestation of the Higgs-top coupling is the emission of a Higgs boson by a top-antitop quark pair. Results presented today, at the LHCP conference in Bologna, describe the observation of this so-called "ttH production" process. Results from the CMS collaboration, with a significance exceeding five standard deviations (considered the gold standard) for the first time, have just been published in the journal Physical Review Letters [open, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.120.231801]; including more data from the ongoing LHC-run, the ATLAS collaboration just submitted new results for publication, with a larger significance.

Illiteracy leads to censorship

by Jon Rappoport

June 6, 2018

intellectual freedom is a deep-rooted tradition without which our characteristic western culture could only doubtfully exist. From that tradition many of our intellectuals are visibly turning away. They have accepted the principle that a book should be published or suppressed, praised or damned, not on its merits but according to political expediency. And others who do not actually hold this view assent to it from sheer cowardice. (George Orwell, 1953)

When those who control public discourse, in a nation, see that they are losing to upstarts, that their flimsy ideas are being supplanted by much stronger ideas from these newcomers (who are actually traditionalists), the shocked controllers turn to the more direct strategy of censorship.

In terms of substance, and even popularity, the ministers of truth are losing; so they abandon reasoned discourse altogether. They desert this fertile, competitive, and NECESSARY territory. They no longer debate. They ban.

Among their supporters are crowds of illiterates.

There are many people who, because their education was a vaporous thing, have no interest in the written or spoken word.

The reason is obvious: they cant read.

Their natural impulse is to make excuses. Who needs books? People who write books are showing their privilege.

For these excuse-makers, book burning would mean NOTHING. All that matters is: what slogans should I shout?

For the illiterate, a book is a mystery. How could anyone put all the words together and write one? Somehow, the author must have a secret method of downloading the book from an elite source, a cloud, a machine, a trick in their DNA.

A book, a report, an article, a study, an essaymillions of people in advanced societies dont have a clue. When censorship tightens, who cares? Its just words.

Long ago, when I taught school, I had an experience I wish many people could share. Twenty children in a 10th-grade classroom. No student was reading up to that grade level. Each student was reading at a DIFFERENT (sub-standard) level. Time to teach reading. How could it be done? It couldnt.

Elite societal players welcome illiteracy. They love it. Its one of their cherishe...

What if President Trumps foreign policy isnt as impulsive as it may seem? Put aside Korea and trade and consider the Middle East. Mr. Trumps disregard of orthodoxy could turn out to be exactly whats needed to sequence a comprehensive strategy for stabilizing the regionand to stanch the flow of Islamist terror to Europe and the U.S.

The first step has been to forge a working consensus among Israel and its Arab neighbors, aligned to contain Iran and frustrate its dreams of a Shiite crescent through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to the Mediterranean. Mr. Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip, in May 2017, and has cultivated the new crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, a putative reformer of Wahhabism.

He has collaborated with the United Arab Emirates and Egypts Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, another advocate for reform of Islam, and respected the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, while calling out Qatar for its support of Hamas in Gaza. While none of these nationsexcept Israelexemplify American ideals of liberty and the rule of law, they share an interest in fighting Islamist terror and ultimately enlisting U.S. support for better governance and economic opportunities for their young populations.

The new alliance faces three main challenges: containing Irans imperial ambitions and support for terrorist groups such as Hezbollah; stabilizing Syria to finish off Islamic State and foreclose the next iteration of caliphate-seeking terror, while also ending Bashar Assads devastation of Syrian Sunni Arabs; and resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The last has become a low priority in the Arab world, but its r...

The Policing of Black Americans is Racial Harassment Funded by the State
When the polices job is to uphold a racialized law and order, black people can be arrested just for living their lives

Wed 6 Jun 2018 06.00 EDT
Paul Butler

The rap group Public Enemy famously stated that 911 is a joke. But that was in 1990. These days 911 is dead serious. Anyone in the United States can dial those three numbers and summon people with guns and handcuffs to participate in their anti-black paranoia. Its racial harassment, sponsored by the government and supported by tax dollars.

When one calls 911 in New York City, the first question the dispatcher asks is What is your emergency? I wonder how the white people recently in the news for calling the police on black folks would have answered that question. Two men sitting at Starbucks. Four women golfing slowly. Graduate student napping. Man moving into apartment. Women moving luggage out of a house.

The people who call the police are not the main problem. Of course those people are, to use an old-fashioned word, prejudiced. It is difficult to imagine them being made anxious by white people going about the business of their everyday lives. But this kind of racism for black people is, in fact, everyday.

This does not mean that it is acceptable: everyday racism is aggravating, health draining, and, for its survivors, labor intensive. Everyday racism requires a performance when a black person navigates white spaces. You conspicuously display your work ID. You look down on the elevator. You whistle Vivaldi.

The people who call the police can fill a black person with a productive rage or a corrosive kind of hate. In my ideal world, when people call the police on black people for no good reason, they would be taken to a public place and beaten with sticks. By black people. They are spirit murderers. But still they are not the main problem.

Everyday racism requires a performance when a black person navigates white spaces
The main problem is the response of the state. Well send a squad over right away. The caller has offered a short pitch for a white supremacist fantasia, and now the dispatcher green...

The end of the British Empire is nigh "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Its not Brexit that is the harbinger of doom. Its not the latest wave of immigrants that will overwhelm the previous wave of immigrants, the Normans, or the wave before that, the Angles and Saxons. Its not the threat of loony dimwit Charles inheriting the throne.

Its that The Guardian has published an heretical article questioning the bedrock of British sensibility.

Tea is shit. We dont examine this enough in England. We just putter along, thinking tea is good; but its not good. Its a lukewarm mug of leaf water, presented as a cure-all for lifes ills. Nice cup of tea, people say, when youve watched a vivid car accident or been given a terminal diagnosis, or gone for a walk and its started raining. Whether the mafia has kidnapped you and made you kill a man with a gun to win your freedom or if youve done quite badly in an exam, someone will say: Let me get you a nice cup of tea.

Whoa. I mean, it is only being published in one of those irrelevant radical northern newspapers, but still, those are dangerous ideas. Collapse is imminent. Chaos will run rampant. What does it even mean to be English anymore if this kind of rubbish is in the air?

Another cuppa is not going to help. Break out the brandy, everyone.

It seems as though every single day, the list grows.

Waiting in a coffee shop while black. Selling real estate while black. Moving in while black. Napping while black. Working out while black.

Ever since a Starbucks in the Philadelphia area came under national scrutiny for calling the police on two black men waiting for a business associate in one of the companys coffee shops, new attention has been focused on the long list of mundane activities that black Americans cant confidently engage in without being treated as suspicious or having the police called.

Its just part of daily living. Its what you expect as a person of color when you head out the door in the morning, said Jeff Chang, the author of Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post-Civil Rights America. A moment like this just sort of galvanized folks to be able to express all the different ways in which theyve been impacted by daily racism.

In many ways the newly energized conversation parallels how Black Lives Matter emerged as an ideological clearinghouse for the problem of racialized police violence several years ago. Neither phenomenon was new, but in both cases a stream of high profile incidents managed to snowball into its own trope, in part thanks to social media and smartphone videos. In this case thats the trope of everyday racism.

For experts, the genesis is clear. While the US has ended the formal, legal codes of enslavement and segregation that stood for most of the nations history, little has been done to change the minds of too many about the racist ideas that those structures rested on.

A national, widespread effort to reorient Americans racist ideas that has never hap...

UKs Labour kicks single market into heart of Brexit debate "IndyWatch Feed War"

The UK opposition Labour Party has proposed an amendment to the governments Brexit legislation. It could mean a major shift towards a softer Brexit, though EU leaders are adamant there will be no cherry picking.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn put forward an amendment to the governments EU withdrawal bill, demanding Prime Minister Theresa May negotiate full access to the blocs single market.

Parliament starts debating the UKs Brexit bill on June 12, with the government still divided on what it wants and will be able to achieve and the Labour Party scrambling to find a convincing alternative.

The 2016 Brexit vote cut across party lines and has left both parties uncertain as to how to proceed without losing key sources of support, further compounding the confusion.

Labour will only accept a Brexit deal that delivers the benefits of the single market and protects jobs and living standards, said Keir Starmer, Labours Brexit policy chief.

The amendment also says the legislation should maintain minimum standards, rights and protections, share joint institutions and regulations and ensure no new impediments to trade.

Starmer said Labour was seeking a bespoke agreement rather than a Norway-style deal, though it is unclear how Labour would negotiate earlier pledges on ending free movement of people, one of the four preconditions for staying in the single market.

Critics within the Labour Party say the amendment in practice falls short of calling for full single market membership. Many Labour MPs want a more nuanced approach after the the House of Lords, recently backed Norway-style membership of the European Economic Area (EEA), which groups countries that are outside the EU but inside the single market. The EEA guarantees full access to the single...

The The Boston Globes Hit Piece on the Assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy "IndyWatch Feed War"

The counterattack on those, including Senator Robert Kennedys children, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, claiming that Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy involving at least a second gunman, has commenced.  The Boston Globe, the traditional hometown newspaper of the Kennedy family, published a clearly misleading piece on May 31, 2018 by Nik DeCosta-Klipa, with the curiously long and loaded title Bobby Kennedys son thinks he was killed by a second shooter. Is there anything to it? Or has RFK, Jr. launched a whole new generation of conspiracy nuts 50 years later.

Whether DeCosta-Klipa was acting on orders from above to produce such a specious piece or is ignorant of the fundamental research in a case that shouts out conspiracy is a question I cannot answer, although based on his go-to expert in his article Daniel Moldea, whose contradictory disinformation on the case is well known to serious researchers I would guess the former to be correct.

Let me begin with the title, which is marvelously propagandistic and sets the nave readers mind on the intended trajectory.  RFK Jr.s recent claim in The Washington Post of a second shooter and his call therefore for a re-investigation (a redundancy since no genuine official investigation was done; it was a cover-up from the start) is followed by a question: Is there anything to it?  This is followed by a headlined quote from Moldea, repeating the CIA created meme about conspiracy nuts: Or has RFK Jr launched a whole new generation of conspiracy nuts 50 years later. A question mark for RFK, Jr., while Moldea is allowed an assertion in the title that is not followed by a question mark.  Language is the key to effective propaganda, including punctuation.  It is a very subtle art, at which our mainstream corporate media are adept.

But if you think I am being picky, let me explain further

DeCosta-Klipa begins by asserting that conspiracy theories concerning President John F. Kennedys death may be most widely circulated.  Thus the reader is led into this article with the insinuation that, of course, Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK and anyone who questions that is a conspiracy nut.  So what about RFKs murder?

As the night follows day, we meet conspiracy nuts here too, courtesy of DeCosta-Klipa who allows Moldea a free hand to spout nonsense.  A person not familiar with the research done on this case by the great researcher Lisa Pe...

Water Shortages: Chinas Unrecognized Threat "IndyWatch Feed War"

Youll be hard stressed to find universal similarities in a nation populated by over a billion people, all with unique identities and cultures, spanned out over 3.705 million miles filled with diverse landscapes. But in Chinas case, history has proven that nothing brings them together better than a crisis. And the present is proving to be no different.

The crisis isnt about North Korea, the current escalation of tensions in the South China Sea, disease, or famine. Its not even related to the new US administration relaying an endless stream of headaches from across the Pacific right to the heart of the Beijing Stock Exchange. The greatest threat facing the worlds up-and-coming superpower has chosen to manifest itself in the simplest of ways, through one of the most thankfully common and trivialized chemical compounds known as H20; otherwise known to those of us who failed high school chemistry as water.

The main issue is one of simple geography. 80% of Chinas water reserves lie in the southern provinces, such as Fujian, but the vast majority of its agricultural production stems from the central and northern regions. Overall, the Asian tiger can only claim ownership of a mere 7% of the worlds fresh water supply, yet it hosts 20% of the global population. With an economy growing at an unprecedented rate, the question of who gets priority with regards to water has become a pressing issue. In 2015, 85% of Beijings fresh water was used for agriculture and industry, rather than private consumption.

The fact of the matter is that while the crisis itself is rooted in natural and partially unavoidable developments, the Chinese government certainly hurried the process along unnecessarily. The government has artificially lowered the price of water for years. While that may sound morally comprehensible in theory, the fact that China never had much water to begin with cemented this policy decision as a colossal mistake. The overly indulgent usage of the cheap commodity led to its absolute waste and inefficient use. In 2009, a World Bank Report revealed that China used ten times more water per unit of production than the average modern country. Chinas problems with pollution have only served to exacerbate the problem further, and for some people the consequences are already being felt.

In the northwestern part of the country lies the city of Lintao, a once promising development hub. Today, its...

Trump Wants Kim to Commit to Disarmament Timetable in Singapore "IndyWatch Feed War"

Mar-a-Lago summit possible if talks go well between leaders White House hasnt described schedule beyond first meeting

The White House wants North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to commit to a timetable to surrender his countrys nuclear arsenal when he meets President Donald Trump next week in Singapore, a high-stakes summit that could last as long as two days or just minutes.

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling

Trump has been advised not to offer Kim any concessions, as the White House seeks to put the onus on the North Koreans to make the summit a success, one U.S. official said. The president is determined to walk out of the meeting if it doesnt go well, two officials said. Alternatively, Trump is toying with the idea of offering Kim a follow-up summit at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida perhaps in the fall if the two men hit it off.

Other than announcing that the two leaders will first meet at 9 a.m. Singapore time June 12 at the Capella Hotel on Singapores Sentosa Island, the White House has described no schedule for the summit. If the first meeting goes well, there will be further events that day and perhaps even on June 13.

The Capella Hotel stands on the island of Sentosa in Singapore.

Trump will be joined in Singapore by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, his Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser John Bolton. The U.S. delegation also tentatively includes the CIAs top Korea expert, Andrew Kim; the National Security Councils point person on Korea, Allison Hooker; and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin, who has negotiated much of the groundwork for the summit with the North Koreans.

EU-US trade row looms over NATO defence meet "IndyWatch Feed War"

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday he was battling to stop the increasingly bitter row between Europe and the US spilling over into the alliance, warning of serious disagreements among member countries.

Jens Stoltenberg

European countries are at loggerheads with Washington over punishing new US tariffs on steel and aluminium as well as President Donald Trumps decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and Paris climate accord.

NATO defence ministers will meet in Brussels on Thursday to approve plans to beef up the alliances ability to mobilise forces quickly in the event of a crisis, as concern about the threat from Russia shows no sign of abating.

They will also sign off on two new command centres one to protect Atlantic shipping lanes, based in Norfolk, Virginia, and another to coordinate troop movements around Europe, located in the southern German city of Ulm.

But the meeting, just five weeks out from a full summit of NATO leaders, looks set to be overshadowed by the spat between European countries and their longtime ally across the Atlantic.

There are now serious disagreements with NATO allies on serious issues, Stoltenberg told reporters, saying he was working hard to minimise the fallout for the alliance.

As long as theyre not solved I have to be focused on how to reduce, limit the negative consequences for NATO.

Stoltenberg insisted the transatlantic bond remained strong and pointed to the way NATO survived major differences among members over the Iraq war in 2003 and the Suez crisis of 1956.

What we have seen again and again is that we have been able to unite around NATOs core task, to protect and defend each other despite those differences, he said.

The leaders of all 29 NATO members will meet in Brussels for the summit in July when all eyes will be on Trump, who has repeatedly attacked European countries for not pulling their weight in the alliance.

Germany, Europes largest economy, has suffered the worst of Trumps wrath for its failure to live up to a pledge by all NATO countries to try to spend at least two percent of gross domestic product on defence.

How BBC News framed the Argentina-Israel football match story "IndyWatch Feed War"

h/t Akiva S

In the early hours of June 6th the BBC News website published an article concerning the cancellation of a friendly football match between Israel and Argentina that was due to have been played on June 9th.

The BBCs chosen framing of the background to the cancellation was apparent in the articles headline Argentina cancels Israel World Cup friendly after Gaza violence and in its tagging Gaza border clashes as well as its opening lines.

Argentina has cancelled a World Cup warm-up match with Israel, apparently under political pressure over Israels treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.

Readers of the articles first three versions were told that: [emphasis added]

News of the cancellation was met with cheers in Gaza, where at least 120 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during recent protests.

What planet is this guy living on, and can I move there? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Al Vernacchio is a high school sex ed teacher. He takes the interesting approach of frankly discussing pornography in the classroomnot in a prudish, condemning way, either, but honestly discussing how its unrealistic and that real sex is not the predictable mechanical process that youll find in internet videos.

studies have shown that kids are often first exposed to porn some of it depicting violent or criminal behavior in their early teens. And analysis has correlated pornography usage with sexual aggression, increased casual sex, and stronger gender-stereotypical sexual beliefs. When I ask Vernacchio what he thinks kids are taking away from porn, he doesnt miss a beat.

They learn that men are supposed to be sexually aggressive, says Vernacchio, whos known for his TED Talks on sex education and has become a go-to source for the New York Times. They learn that women are objects. They learn that in the absence of consent, you dont need a clear yes. They learn that sex doesnt require communication. They learn that youre supposed to know what to do like this knowledge gets preloaded into you, and if you dont know, theres something wrong with you.

But thats not whats strange and exotic about this guy hes just speaking common sense (or what ought to be common sense). This is the bit that convinced me hes living on an alien planet:

In 20 years at Friends Central, Vernacchio has become well known and highly regarded at the progressive, creative-minded private school. Laurie Novo, whos worked at Friends Central (including as co-principal) for 25 years, says shes never heard a single parent complain about Vernacchios classes. In fact, theyre so wildly popular especially the 11th- and 12th-grade Sexuality and Society curriculum that the school once had to hold a lottery for seats. Casey Cipriani, a 2001 graduate who took the courses first iteration, says she recalls other students and even her own mother asking to read her homework.

Not a single complaintunbelievable.

Meanwhile, here in Stevens County, Minnesota, United States of America, Planet Earth, our students once elected a gay man to be prom queen, and the community rose up in indignant outrage. Our theater department put on a childrens play that was all about tolerance and diversity, and most of the local schools boycotted it. Im pretty sure if one of our high school teachers had a talk about the conventions of porn videos and mentioned a few porn sites (that the students already know about, but the parents like to pretend theyre ignorant), Id be able to witness a lynching....

"Climate Change" Has Run Its Course "IndyWatch Feed War"

Hate the headline of the WSJ article- it's misleading. Since climate changes.
But, do realize that AGW had to be rebranded into "climate change" in order to continue to sell the chosen concept. "Climate change" was chosen to represent the acceptable obfuscation of our managed reality.

Archive link via wattsupwiththat?

A few excerpts below:
A good indicator of why climate change as an issue is over can be found early in the text of the Paris Agreement. The nonbinding pact declares that climate action must include concern for gender equality, empowerment of women, and intergenerational equity as well as the importance for some of the concept of climate justice.  Another is Sarah Myhres address at the most recent meeting of the American Geophysical Union, in which she proclaimed that climate change cannot fully be addressed without also grappling with the misogyny and social injustice that have perpetuated the problem for decades.
The descent of climate change into the abyss of social-justice identity politics represents the last gasp of a cause that has lost its vitality. Climate alarm is like a car alarma blaring noise people are tuning out.

PNG resource industry contribution to local communities are significant "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Papua New Guinea is one of the few countries in the world where mining and petroleum projects provide socio-economic opportunities to local areas they operate in, says the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum.

The Chamber made this statement when responding to media statements recently that the extractive sector was contributing very little to communities while it was enjoying tax concessions.

The Chamber says such statements undermine the significant social and economic contributions resource projects make to local communities and the nation.

It also stated that most people are not aware that PNGs benefit structure is unique in the world as mining and petroleum companies in many jurisdictions of the world do not provide socio-economic services to the areas they operate in.
The Chamber is proud of this structure and we will continue to support this. It is also important to appreciate too that in PNG, resource projects have a strong focus on their corporate social responsibility and continue to invest millions of Kina in making sure host communities have access to reliable health and education services, infrastructures such as roads, bridges, construction of classrooms and teachers houses, locally engaged employment and training, and agriculture programs. The development of local SMEs also thrives of the local economy generated by the resources projects in these often remote and rural locations, it said.

The Chamber added that the financial contribution of the resource sectors to the PNG economy also comprise of company tax, royalty, dividend withholding tax, salary and wages tax, foreign contractors tax, duties, production levy, and development levies and dividends paid to the government and landowners if they hold an equity interest in the project.

In 2017, the industry contributed over 26% of PNGs Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and over 80% of the Nations export revenue valued at K23 billion with the industry employing in excess of 20,000 people directly while many more were employed in sectors dependent on resources including landowner businesses.

APEC Aims for More Women in Tourism "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Tourism officials from the 21 APEC member-economies convened last week  in Port Moresby, PNG in pursuit of sustainable and inclusive economic growth through strengthened tourism initiatives, with a special focus on gender equality.

A United Nations World Tourism Organization report found that while women in tourism make up a substantial proportion of the formal tourism workforce and are well represented in service and clerical level jobs, they are poorly represented at professional and management levels and typically earn 10 to 15 per cent less than their male counterparts.

Recognizing tourism as a pathway to success for women, the APEC Women in Tourism Dialogue aims to address these gender gaps by focusing discussions on the empowerment of womens productivity and economic participation within the sector.
As we further enhance our national tourism strategy, with an eye toward gender equality, we see heightened roles and visibility of women in Papua New Guinea and the APEC region, says Dr Alcinda Trawen, Director for Policy and Planning of the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority.

Through this collaboration with our colleagues in other APEC economies, we hope to see the expansion of opportunities in the supply chain for women, women handling more leadership and managerial roles, and long-term improvement in the quality of life among women in the tourism industry, she added.

APEC member-economies, shares Dr Trawen, can aid Papua New Guinea in strengthening its tourism industry to become an engine for sustainable and inclusive economic growth through the sharing of best practices, technical advice and assistance that focus on promoting labor, skills development, and certification and policy alignment.

Currently, the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority has made giant strides in improving local tourism services. Supported by the World Bank, the Tourism Sector Development Project, which began last November 2017 directly benefits local communities and private sector enterprises like micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Additionally, efforts to strengthen the overall tourism institutional framework and to support the growing arts and cultural industries are expected to generate benefits beyond these provinces at the national level.

As Papua New Guineas tourism develops, local tourism sectors are better equipped to provide economic opportunities for the bottom 40 per...

The Boston Globes Hit Piece on the Assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy "IndyWatch Feed War"

by Edward Curtin The counterattack on those, including Senator Robert Kennedys children, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, claiming that Senator Robert F. Speculative Poets in Conversation: Jeannine Hall Gailey "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Speculative Poets in Conversation Series features interviews with writers of science fiction and fantasy poetry about how their work addresses social justice issues. For the third post in the series, I spoke with poet Jeannine Hall Gailey about her 2015 collection, The Robot Scientists Daughter, published by Mayapple Press.

Jeannine Hall Gailey served as the second Poet Laureate of Redmond, Washington. She is the author of five books of poetry: Becoming the Villainess, She Returns to the Floating World, which was a finalist for the 2012 Eric Hoffer Montaigne Medal and a winner of a Florida Publishers Association Presidential Award for Poetry, Unexplained Fevers, The Robot Scientists Daughter, and her latest, winner of the Moon City Press Book Prize and SFPAs Elgin Award, Field Guide to the End of the World. Shes also the author of PR for Poets: A Guidebook to Publicity and Marketing. She has a B.S. in Biology and an M.A. in English from the University of Cincinnati, as well as an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Pacific University. Her poems have been featured on NPRs The Writers Almanac and on Verse Daily; two were included in The Years Best Fantasy and Horror. In 2007 she received a Washington State Artist Trust GAP Grant and in 2007 and 2011 a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize.

Freethinking Ahead: In the collection, we see the character of the Robot Scientists Daughter as both of the community and yet outside of it. How did you initially conceive of her in respect to your intentions for the poems? Did your concept of her change over the course of the collection, especially in light of your personal connections to Oak Ridge National Laboratories and that of the research you did for the poems?

Republican comeback is a real threat to the elite medias blue wave theory "IndyWatch Feed War"

Every time members of the elite media mention the blue wave that is supposedly coming in the Nov. 6 congressional elections, they seem more and more delusional. In fact, as the elections draw closer, Republican victories are looking much more likely.

In December, it seemed plausible that Democrats would make gains the opposition party often grows in the first midterm elections of a new presidency. The polls at the end of 2017 also supported the idea. It made sense that the elite media would pick up the blue wave theory as a continuation of the reflexive anti-Trump narrative they had touted throughout Trumps candidacy and first year in office.

By Newt Gingrich
Fox News

However, the blue wave storyline was created before many of the benefits of the Trump-Republican agenda began to take hold, and its going to be increasingly difficult to convince Americans their lives arent getting better.

The passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, combined with President Trumps massive deregulation effort, has led to the lowest unemployment rate in 18 years (and the lowest black unemployment rate ever recorded). Wages are increasing, business and consumer confidence are soaring, and more and more Americans are starting to realize the huge disconnect between the America described by the mainstream media and the America in which they are living.

Remember: When Republicans were debating the tax cuts, the elite media and the Democrats claimed working Americans would not benefit from the reduction of the corporate tax rate. They said the corporate tax cut was a giveaway to big business. However, as of Monday, 587 companies had announced pay raises, bonuses, 401(k) match increases, expansions, and utility rate reductions, as a result of the tax cuts, according to Americans for Tax Reform.

Additionally, the media and the left claimed middle-class Americans would not benefit from the changes to the personal income tax brackets, yet most median-income families of four will save more than $2,000 in taxes starting this year. (This is what House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calle...

Why Its Absurd To Pretend The Enlightenment Is Responsible For Racism "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The ongoing argument over whether the Enlightenment is a good thing is hardly a new facet of American political life. Defenses of the Enlightenment have been written over and over in the past several decades, by various defenders of the liberal order and Western civilization.

Here is an excellent essay on the topic from Walter Olson, writing two decades ago in the pages of Reason, that might as well have been written today. Here is a criticism running earlier this year in the Wall Street Journal that might well be read as a response to Olson. This is not a new argument, but an old one with a new generation of participants.

More recently in book form, Jonah Goldbergs Suicide of the West seeks to defend The Miracle brought about by the Enlightenment, and Stephen Pinkers Enlightenment Now presents a broader defense of Enlightenment values and the world they helped create. Both authors are concerned about what they see as populist, nationalist, and religious forces pushing back against what they see as a strain of thought overwhelmingly beneficial to humanity.

I recently sparked Twitter reaction by disagreeing with, then mocking, two comments from Slates Jamelle Bouie in response to a review of Goldbergs book, where he claimed To put it bluntly: racism is an enlightenment idea, whose foundations were laid by key thinkers like Locke and Kant.

There will be no Trump collapse "IndyWatch Feed War"

Ive tried everything to avoid thinking about the next election family travel, yard work, crossword puzzles. But now its only five months away, barely longer than the gestation period of a North American beaver, or the Stanley Cup playoffs. November cant be avoided any longer.

In this climate of political frenzy, anyone who tries to predict the outcome must be either deluded or clairvoyant. Yet were close enough, perhaps, to see some key features of the battlefield. For instance:

There will be no Trump collapse.

Image may contain: 1 person, hat and outdoor

From the moment late in 2016 when Hillary Clintons formless, themeless, listless campaign handed the White House to Donald Trump (assisted by Comrade Putin), Democrats have been counting on the reckless, heedless, careless novice to return the favor. Rather than melt down, though, President Trump is gaining strength.

After a rocky start, the president has cut himself loose from the highly unpopular Congress to create a clear account of his unusual reign, which he repeats with unflagging discipline. Hes a rulebreaker who gets results, and the enemies of change are conspiring to stop him. This is a polarizing message, indeed. But Trump appears to understand that popularity and unpopularity arent necessarily opposites. They can be partners: Emotion runs both ways.

Todays Two Main Political Camps Are Pro-Thought Versus Anti-Thought "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

People are either pro-thought or anti-thought.

The Supreme Courts contortions on the Masterpiece Cakeshop case should dispel any doubts about this. Defendant Jack Phillips had chosen not to create an artistic cake for a same-sex ceremony because doing so would violate his conviction that marriage is the sacred union of one man and one woman.

As David Harsanyi noted in The Federalist, the Supreme Court avoided the core issues of freedom of thought and speech while ruling for Phillips: Phillips only won his case because the Supreme Court found that Colorado didnt display religious neutrality when punishing him for his beliefs.

So the usual political labels of Left and Right cannot explain the exploding attacks on freedom of speech and conscience that are running rampant today. The war on speech is basically a war on thought. Lets review just a few examples that confirm power elites interest in abolishing freedom of thought:

  • On college campuses: Administrators increasingly permit and expect students to disrupt and even riot at talks by invited speakers and scholars some deem politically incorrect.
  • At Google: Software engineer James Damore was summarily fired for expressing a politically incorrect opinion, despite his copious citations of facts to back up his thesis.
  • At The Atlantic Monthly: Writer Kevin Williamson was quickly fired for publicly expressing a politically incorrect opinion despite the fact that his opinion was well known before his firing, and that he was actually hired in part for his reputation as a talented provocateur.
  • At Mozilla: Activists forced the resignation of CEO Brendan Eich when they discovered that he privately donated to a politically incorrect causeCalifornias Proposition 8, which in 2008 confirmed the legal definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Eich chose to resign rather than recant his thoughts.
  • In New York City: Fines of up to $250,000 if you misgender a person.

The intelligence bureaucracies spied on the Donald Trump campaign: Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrants were granted because of a Hillary Clinton-funded and unverified document, national-security letters were issued to allow warrantless spying, and the unprecedented but not-illegal-per-se unmasking of Trump officials conversations with non-U.S. persons was shockingly routine.

Yet the news of a CIA-connected human source operating as far back as April or May of 2016 is about more than just spying. It is the latest example in what now looks to be a long line of attempted setups by the Clinton team, many times aided and abetted by our intelligence bureaucracies.

These events should anger any red blooded American who believes in representative democracy and the importance of the rule of law. Lets review eight examples.

1. CIA And FBI Human Intelligence

Weve just learned about Stefan Halper, a CIA-connected Cambridge professor who working for the FBI contacted Trump advisers Carter Page, George Papadopoulos, and Sam Clovis during the 2016 election, to investigate what they might know about suspicions of collusion with Russia. Former Trump campaign aide Michael Caputo has claimed that he was approached by an unknown second U.S. intelligence community asset in early May of 2016.

The FBI says that the Russia investigation began in July, because of something Papadopoulos said to an Australian diplomat in May. Papadopoulos had supposedly told the Australian diplomat something about Russia having information that could be damaging to Clinton. Papadopoulos allegedly heard this from Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese-born professor who allegedly claimed to have close ties with Russia.

Special counsel Robert Muellers team charged Papadopoulos  unconvincingly  with lying to investigators, because Papadopoulos said his contacts with Mifsud began before he was on the Trump campaign. Actually, the contacts started after he learned he would be a foreign policy advisor for the campaign, but before the campaign mad...

3 Takeaways From The Supreme Court Gay Celebration Cake Ruling "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Supreme Court ruled Monday a Colorado baker does not have to make a wedding cake for a gay couple in Masterpiece Cake shop vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The ruling seems like a big victory for religious freedom and free speech, but a closer read of the courts opinion shows three takeaways from the ruling conservatives cant afford to ignore.

First, lets recap: Jack Phillips is a devout Christian and the owner of Masterpiece Cake shop in Lakewood, Colorado. In 2012, Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins, a gay couple, came to the shop to order a wedding cake. Phillips said that he would sell the couple a cake for a shower or any other baked goods in his shop, but he couldnt make a wedding cake for the same-sex couple because of his religious-based opposition to same-sex marriage, which Colorado itself deemed illegal in 2012.

The couple filed a charge with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission alleging discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in violation of the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act. The Commission ruled in the couples favor. But Jack argued that the commissions order violated his constitutional rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Jack deemed that using his artistic skills to create a wedding cake is a form of speech. The case went through Colorado state courts which affirmed the Civil Rights Commissions ruling and its enforcement order. Eventually the case landed in the Supreme Court, which reversed those rulings.

Now, here are the takeaways.

1. The Ruling Is Narrow, Which Could Spell Trouble Down The Road

While the ruling favors Phillips 7-2, the majority opinion delivered by Justice Anthony Kennedy is based on very narrow ground. The courts majority found it is difficult to support the argument that the Civil Rights Commissions order violated his free speech and free exercise of religion.

The free speech aspect of this case is difficult, for few persons who have seen a beautiful wedding cake might have thought of its creation as an exercise of protected speech, Kennedy wrote. The majority found the same difficulties arise in determining whether Phillips has a valid free exercise claim, because as a business owner his right to exercise religion might be limited by generally applicable laws.

Instead, the majority rests its ruling in favor of Phillips on the narrow ground that the Colorado Civil Rights Commissions consideration of this case was inconsistent with the states obligation to religious neutrality required by the Constitution.

The court gave several examples of the impermissible hostility Phillips received from the Civil Rights Com...

Why The FBI Needs Yet Another Cover Story For Starting Spygate "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It might be time for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to revise its Russia-Trump collusion origin story again. First, they said the whole thing started with the Christopher Steele dossier. When that fell apart, the beginning became a random conversation between a Trump campaign staffer and a foreign diplomat. But an examination of the George Papadopolous explanationthat the FBI kicked into gear once it was told a Trump affiliate was trawling for hacked emailsshows that the public evidence doesnt fit the bureaus story.

The FBI has long maintained that it launched its investigation into the Trump campaign on July 31, 2016, upon learning that Trump foreign policy advisor Papadopoulos knew the Russians possessed dirt on Hillary Clinton. Following a December 31, 2017, New York Times article, the narrative then ran that Papadopoulos had told Australian diplomat Alexander Downer that Moscow had thousands of emails that would embarrass Mrs. Clinton, apparently stolen in an effort to try to damage her campaign.

This Narrative Is Getting Fresh Eyes

In the last month, those covering Spygate have revisited that narrative, and after a careful re-reading of the Times article, noted it does not actually say that Papadopoulos told Downer that the Russians had Clintons emails. To the contrary, the article admits how much Mr. Papadopoulos said that night at the Kensington Wine Rooms with the Australian, Alexander Downer, is unclear.

Yet the Times asserted that when WikiLeaks began releasing the hacked Democratic National Committee emails in July, Australian officials passed the information about Mr. Papadopoulos to their American counterparts.. . .[And] [t]he hacking and the revelation that a member of the Trump campaign may have had inside information about it were driving factors that led the F.B.I. to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russias attempts to disrupt the election and whether any of President Trumps associates conspired.

Downer has since denied telling his higher-ups that Papadopoulos mentioned Clintons emails. In an interview with The Australian, as Chuck Ross recently highlighted in The Daily Caller, Downer said Papadopoulos merely told him the Russians might use material that they have on Hillary Clinton in the lead-up to the election, which may be damaging. Papadopoulos didnt say dirt; he said material that could be damaging to her. Downer also stressed Papadopoulos didnt say what it was.

But we dont need to take Downers word on the matter. And we should have realized mon...

The Real Reason You Shouldnt Worry About When To Wear White Is Way Deeper Than Fashion "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Memorial Day has come and gone, marking the official arrival of summer. This means the moratorium on wearing white after Labor Day enforced by the legalistically fashion-minded is over. This rule is an elitist and arbitrary one that should be abandoned by everyone who would like a more democratic America.

Only Americans need to worry about discarding the no-white-after-Labor-Day (hereinafter NWALD) imperative because only Americans have ever cared about enforcing it in the first place. How did this uniquely American rule come about, you may ask? And does anyone even still follow it? Charlie Scheips, creator of the definitive volume of American sartorial pursuits, is one who continues to be committed to NWALD principle telling TIME that he, would never be caught dead wearing a white suit after Labor Day.

The answer to how NWALD came about is surprisingly un-American, more complicated than white merely being a cooler color and less practical for the chillier fall months, and more insidious than white linens simply being a symbol of the effortlessly chic leisure class.

NWALD is a product of the post-Civil War era when the hereditarily well-to-do were keen to set themselves apart from the upwardly mobile parvenu of the Gilded Age. They did so with elaborate and haphazard rules that governed their conduct to clearly distinguish those who were in from who were not a series of rules that I call class markers because they were afraid that perhaps money could buy one class! Examples of class markers are knowledge of how to use the fish knife, when to wear a dinner jacket, and at which month to debut at ones cotillion (early summer months are more fashionable than others) and, for that matter, what a cotillion is.

Class markers, are distinct from social lubricants, or the norms that moderate our words and actions for the sake of respecting the dignity of others. Social lubricants may look differently depending on where we are and with whom we are interacting, whether it be removing shoes in the home of a Japanese family or holding the door open for someone behind us. But no matter our geographical location, social lubricants indicate wordlessly to those around us that we are not above the rules we wait in line just like everyone else and that we respect those around us. Understanding this distinction is important to avoid conflating the two, and to appreciate the nature of true civility.

People today tend to adopt contrary views. They either lament that civility is under siege and see its decline it as both a cause and emblem of our societal fracturing. Or, they insist that civility is the superficial, outdated, code of elites that holds us back from social equality. As NWALD shows us, there is truth to both perspectives, and the cl...

Dave Hodges The Common Sense Show "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the 1930s, President Roosevelt confiscated the gold of average people. He did this so his rich friends from the Federal Reserve would have a way to survive the economic holocaust that was killing the dollar. In times of economic crisis, gold holds its vale and cash does not. In the 1940s with no gold effectively backing up the dollar, the worlds bankers decided that US dollar (ie petrodollar) would become the worlds reserve currency. Today, led by the BRICS, seemingly everyone from European nations to Asian nations are ditching the dollar. And now, the contient of Africa has become the latest to ditch the dollar, Subsequently,  the dollar is facing hyper inflation and extinction.. Are you ready? Are you prepped? Do you have food, water, guns,,ammo, gold, and medicine? IF not, you could son be doomed if you are only holding cash. Ifnore this story, at your own peril. Here is the story.

24 Ways For The Feds To Boss People Around Were Just Added To Senate Republicans Obamacare Retread "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Last week, I outlined how a white paper Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) released essentially advocated for Obamacare on steroids. That plan would keep the laws most expensive (and onerous) federal insurance requirements, while calling for more taxpayer dollars to make that expensive coverage more affordable.

Unfortunately, Cassidy also would extend this highly regulatory approach beyond mere white papers and into legislation. A recently disclosed copy of a revised Graham-Cassidy billoriginally developed by Cassidy and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) last fallimposes two dozen new requirements on states. These requirements would undermine the bills supposed goal of state flexibility, and could lead to a regime more onerous and expensive than Obamacare itself.

18 New Adequate and Affordable Coverage Rules

Specifically, that coverage must:

  • Include four categories of basic services defined in the State Childrens Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) statute:
    • Inpatient and outpatient hospital services;
    • Physicians surgical and medical services;
    • Laboratory and X-ray services, and
    • Well-baby and well-child care, including age-appropriate immunizations;
  • Include three categories of additional services also defined in the SCHIP statute:
    • Coverage of prescription drugs;
    • Vision services; and
    • Hearing services;
  • Include two other categories of services as defined by Obamacare:
    • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment; and

Kate Spades Self-Destruction Mars Her Legacy As A Role Model "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

On Tuesday afternoon, the fashion world was rocked by the sudden and tragic loss of Kate Spade. The vibrant and iconic designer reintroduced the world to color. Bright color. Despite the great sadness at our loss, the legacy that Kate Spade leaves behind is one to be celebrated by women around the world.

The Kansas City native who went on to establish a fashion empire with locations in almost every country in the world was an inspiration, both as a business mogul and for her love of family.

When I entered college, there were few designers I could name, or afford. But it didnt take long as a Kappa Kappa Gamma to learn that Spade was more than a famous alum and sister, she was a role model.

Her Classic Nylon Phoebe bag was like a rite of passage. The idea of having one of my own was all the motivation I needed for logging extra hours at work-study and my job at the university rec center.

But more than that bag, Kate represented girls like myself, from a town in the Midwest, who wanted to leave school and build something that was great and beautiful. So I had no problem working hard to support a brand created by a woman like that.

How Kate Spade Made Her Name

When Kate Brosnahan was in college she met a boy named Andy Spade. Soon after, she took his name as her own, both in marriage and in business. Without a background in fashion or a nest egg, in 1993 Kate Spade was born.

But the first few years were far from glamorous. According to an interview with NPR, that first year she spent more than $4,000 on materials and admission to a New York City trade show to show her bags. But by the end, We hadnt even sold enough to cover the cost of the booth, Spade said. In fact, Spade made no money for the first three years of her company. At one point, the couple liquidated their 401(k)s to keep the company going.

That situation led Kate to use every source and skill at her disposal, including becoming an apprentice, working out of her apartment, and walking boxes of her product to the nearest Post Office. She believed in herself and her product. As she once put it, her mission was timelessness in the aesthetic of her bags. That is exactly what women like me were looking for: the perfect marriage of structure and personality.

Then in 1996 everything changed. The entrepreneurial spirit and husband-wife partnership paid off, as Kate received the Best Accessory Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and launched her line in several department stores.

From there, the two continued down their empire-building journey. After becoming a retail giant, a portion of the...

The Cat In The Hat? Were Too PC To Publish That "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

My three-year-old recently noticed The Cat in the Hat on her bookshelf, a book my parents saved from my own twentieth-century childhood, which I dont think Ive read since I was my daughters age. It has appealing rhymes and a story my daughter liked. (The cat is very mischievous!)

But reading the book as a parent aware of the times, I couldnt help but think that this classic childrens book, which was published in 1957, would never be released now. Sensibilities have simply changed too much.

Yes, children still love hearing rhymes read aloud. However, the whole premise of the book is scandalous in 2018. To refresh your memory: A mother disappears for the day (to do what?), while her young children sit inside bored and wishing it werent raining (concerns about sedentary children came later). The Cat in the Hat then appears, seemingly out of nowhere (how did he get in?). Hes entertaining, but also seems to be a complete stranger (and the kids are amazingly copacetic about that).

I cant imagine a contemporary writer committing anything similar on paper. In the 21st century, there is no joking about leaving kids unattended for fear that someone will miss the joke and call Child Protective Services (CPS). While Im sure CPS existed in the 50s, I dont have the sense it was used as a cudgel against political opponents and other parents the way it is today.

Beyond that, there are simple issues of safety to consider. The cat manages to enter the house without knocking or ringing a doorbell. Did he find a spare key, or did the mother forget to lock the door? Perhaps we are meant to assume that Sally and her unnamed brother live in a low-crime neighborhood (and era), so we shouldnt worry about that.

Still, shouldnt the children be frightened by this uninvited creature, at least initially? There is no apparent fright, only delight. Perhaps that makes for a better, funnier story, especially for preschoolers.

That said, stranger danger has been preached to children at least since I was young. I was alway...

Ethan Hawke Nails Role Of Troubled Pastor In First Reformed "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ethan Hawke absolutely nails his role as the deeply conflicted Reverend Toller in the film First Reformed.

Hawke enchantingly brings to life an ailing man of faith, who is leading a tiny congregation at an historic church in upstate New York. Toller opens the film by claiming he can no longer pray, and has resorted to keeping a journal of his thoughts, however dark and twisted they may be. His role at First Reformed is less of a shepherd to a flock, and more of a tour guide for the 250-year-old church, which boasts bullet scares from The Revolution, and a trap door to the underground railroad.

His body is ill, but undiagnosed. His mind and soul are wounded and pessimistic, following the death of his son, and the collapse of his marriage. The church is unable to support itself, and has to lean heavily on nearby megachurch, Abundant Life, to continue functioning a fact that wreaks havoc on Tollers already rotting gut.

Plagued by illness, insecurity, and uncertainty, Toller finds himself deeply intertwined with a young couple who attends the church. Michael, played by Philip Ettinger, is a young man struggling to come to grips with, as he perceives, the fact that human beings have destroyed the planet. He is overcome with malaise at the thought of raising a child in a world that is too damaged to survive, and believes his pregnant wife, Mary, should abort their unborn baby.

Mary, played by a career best Amanda Seyfried, does not want an abortion, and hopes that Toller will be able to relieve her husbands ever-increasing sense of doom. Toller is grateful for the request, having found little value within himself offering church tours and selling souvenirs. Michaels darkness is revealed to have much deeper implications, and Toller becomes engrossed in the young mans passion for the broken planet.

Mary and Toller grow ever closer, as Tollers relationship with God goes from strained to non-existent. Pastor Jeffers, played by Cedric the Entertainer, of nearby Abundant Life takes an interest in personally ridiculing Toller, sparing no opportunity to humiliate him. At first dejected by his rapidly deteriorating circumstances, Toller replaces God with dark obsession, and vanishes deeply into his most basic impulses finding superficial comfort in staggering alcohol consumption and plots of revenge. No longer able to play the quiet Reverend role he had cast himself in, Toller discovers what he is truly capable of without God, and what he truly wants in his own heart.

To say nothing of the outstanding acting performances, Paul Schrader has written and directed a film so elegant and compelling it is a wonder that First Reformed was not first produced as a play. Ethan Hawke vanishes into Toller, and performs pain more convincingly than is comfortable. It is the type of film that assures you every prop in...

A Costly, Deadly Obsession With Coal "IndyWatch Feed War"

The abundant fuel powered the Industrial Revolution, but has lost its price advantage and is shortening lives

President Donald Trumps efforts to revive coal mining have been criticized as picking winners. Actually, its more like picking losers: coal has become a sunset industry as cleaner energy sources rapidly get cheaper. If Mr. Trump succeeds at reversing the tide, it will come at a steep price, in both dollars and lives, most tragically for the coal miners he purports to help.

Centuries ago, coal was a miracle material. Cleaner, safer and more efficient than wood, it made the Industrial Revolution, steam power and electrification possible. In much of the world it remains ridiculously plentiful and will be the power generation fuel of choice for years to come.

In the U.S., though, coal is headed toward obsolescence. Thanks to the fracking revolution, natural-gas-fueled power plants...

Its not a joke, Owari botnet operators used root as username and password to access a C&C "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Security expert Ankit Anubhav discovered a Command and Control server for the Owari botnet protected with weak credentials.

An IoT botnet has been commandeered by white hats after its controllers used a weak username and password combination for its command-and-control server.

Security expert Ankit Anubhav from Newsky Security discovered an IoT botnet that was controlled by an architecture poorly configured, the botmaster used weak credentials for the authentication to the command-and-control server.

The researchers exploited week configuration to take over the MySQL server used to control the Owari botnet, the author left port 3306 open allowing the authentication with root as username and password.

We observed few IPs attacking our honeypots with default credentials, with executing commands like /bin/busybox OWARI post successful login. In one of the cases, a payload hosted on 80(.)211(.)232(.)43 was attempted to be run post download.

When we investigated the IP, we observed that port 3306, the default port for MySQL database, was open. reads the blog post published by Ankit Anubhav.

We tried to investigate more into this IP. To our surprise, it is connected to the attackers servers using one of the weakest credentials known to mankind.

Username: root
Password: root

The situation is paradoxical considering that Mirai-based botnets, including Owari,  spread through Internet-of-Things devices by brute-force guessing passwords and taking advantage of default credentials.

Database investigation conducted by the experts allowed the expert to discover a User table that contains login credentials for various users who will control the botnet. Some entries could be associated with botmasters or customers of the botnet

User table contains login credentials for various users who will control the botnet. Some of them can be botnet creators, or some can simply be the customers of the botnet, a.k.a black box users, who pay a sum of money to launch DDoS attacks. Besides credentials, duration limit such as for how much time the user can perform the DDoS, maximum available bots for attack (-1 means the entire botnet army of the bot master is available) and cooldown time (time interval between the two attack commands) can also be observed. continues the expert.

The outcomes of Iraqs 2018 elections "IndyWatch Feed"

The ramifications from Iraqs elections do not mean we will witness a better Iraq, but it will certainly differ from the one we know of today.

A supporter of Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Picture by Ameer Al Mohammedaw/DPA/PA Images. All rights reserved. For the past and possibly the next few weeks, Baghdad has been witnessing intense meetings between politicians, religious figures and international lobbyists to guarantee a governmental ally in the capital, as a result of the parliamentary elections held on May 12th 2018. To some, this is Iraqs fourth democratic achievement since 2003, and to others, it stands for the fourth legitimization of a corrupted system, designed by an occupier as reflected by the low 44.5% voter turnout. These are the first elections following Iraqs war (2014-2017) against ISIS and the major spat between Baghdad and Erbil, following the independence referendum organised by Iraqs Kurdish leader, Masoud Barzani, against national and international criticism. The unlikely alliances and the unforeseen results of the elections present many challenges for the formation of a new government

Who are the winners?

The top four winners, starting from the highest were the Sairoon (Forward) Alliance, al-Fatah Alliance, al-Nasr (Victory) Alliance and the State of the Law (SOL) Coalition and the KDP sharing the fourth place. Sairoon, which won with 54 seats, is led by prominent Shiite nationalist figure, Muqtada al-Sadr, in alliance with the Iraqi Communist Party. Al-Fatah came in second with 47 seats and is led by pro-Iran Hadi Al-Amri, leader of Badr Corps, a guerrilla force formed by Iran to fight the Iraqi army during the Iran-Iraq war. Al-Amri is also known for being one of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) main leaders, which is why many media platforms refer to his political coalition as the PMU representative, a very inexact generalization of a diverse force. Prime Minister (PM) al-Abadis al-Nasr only came in third. This came as a surprise, as most were betting on his victory following the gove...

Cracking the Case of Capcoms CPS2 Security "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We love a good deep-dive on a specialized piece of technology, the more obscure the better. Youre getting a sneak peek into a world that, by rights, you were never meant to know even existed. A handful of people developed the system, and as far as they knew, nobody would ever come through to analyze and investigate it to find out how it all went together. But they didnt anticipate the tenacity of a curious hacker with time on their hands.

[Eduardo Cruz] has done a phenomenal job of documenting one such system, the anti-piracy mechanisms present in the Capcom CPS2 arcade board. He recently wrote in to tell us hes posted his third and final entry on the system, this time focusing on figuring out what a mysterious six pin header on the CPS2 board did. Hearing from others that fiddling with this header occasionally caused the CPS2 board to automatically delete the game, he knew it must be something important. Hackaday Protip: If theres a self-destruct mechanism attached to it, thats probably the cool part.

He followed the traces from the header connector, identified on the silkscreen as C9, back to a custom Capcom IC labeled DL-1827. After decapping the DL-1827 and putting it under the microscope, [Eduardo] made a pretty surprising discovery: it wasnt actually doing anything with the signals from the header at all. Once the chip is powered up, it simply acts as a pass-through for those signals, which are redirected to another chip: the DL-1525....

If you want more MS-13 gang members raping, stabbing and murdering your family members next year, vote Democrat this November "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In recent days, Democrats and their allies in the American Pravda media deliberately took something President Donald Trump said out of context during a discussion at the White House with California law enforcement personnel.

They were talking about the Golden States ridiculous and, some believe, illegal sanctuary state law that forbids police officers in the state from cooperating in most circumstances with federal immigration authorities.

Democrats who passed the legislation claim its compassionate and inclusive, but law enforcement leaders in the state say it prevents them from taking dangerous illegal alien criminals off American streets.

At one point, the conversation turned to the violent MS-13 gang whose members are responsible for a growing number of horrendous, horrific crimes all over the U.S., including beheadings and beating people to death.

Trump rightfully labeled these cretins animals. (Related: STUPID: More Millennials prefer to date an MS-13 animal than a Trump supporter.)

The media and Democrats misrepresented Trumps comments to mean all immigrants, when, of course, thats not at all what he had said.

Not only that, but elected Democrats stood up for the animals, their anti-Trump instincts being so powerful that they are now being seen by tens of millions of citizens for what they really are: anti-American.

The principal defender of the animals was none other than House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, whos from the sanctuary state of California.

Bobby Kennedys Reaction to Seeing Hunger Up Close in America "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In 1967, Robert Kennedy knelt in a crumbling shack in Mississippi, watching a toddler pick rice and beans off a dirt floor. It had been three years since President Lyndon B. Johnson launched his war on poverty. What Kennedy saw on that trip would, in part, drive his run for the presidency one year later.

In this special WhoWhatWhy podcast, Jeff Schechtman talks to longtime journalist and University of Mississippi professor Ellen Meacham about the profound impact that Kennedys 1967 trip to the Mississippi Delta had on his renewed commitment to social justice in the last 14 months of his life.

While Vietnam was the most contentious issue of the day, poverty and its nexus with the civil rights movement were very much on Kennedys mind. RFK went to the Delta as part of a Senate fact-finding group. Some key players in the civil rights movement also took part.

According to Meacham, Kennedy had long felt that the poverty programs of the day were inadequately funded and failed to address real needs. What he discovered in Mississippi was not just the kind of poverty he had already seen in Harlem, the Bronx, and Bedford Stuyvesant. This was abject hunger, particularly in children.

What frustrated him the most was how so many local officials, including Mississippis two US senators, refused to acknowledge how bad things were.

Meacham also reminds us how Kennedy saw so many of the nations resources, which might have been deployed to fight poverty, going instead to the war in Vietnam.

The experience brought him closer to Dr. Martin Luther King, who saw his own efforts for social justice and workers rights as the logical extension of the civil rights movement.

As King said, and Kennedy came to acknowledge: it does a man no good to be able to sit at a lunch counter if he cannot afford to eat.

Policing for Profit-Now the US Customs Is Stealing Citizens Money "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Jeff Sessions is in favor of civilian asset forfeiture (CAF). CAF occurs when the governments finds large sums of money on people and they seize it. They assume the person is a drug dealer without any due process. This is worse than the communists. Basically, law enforcement becomes the whores of central banking under CAF because cash is the enmy oof the central banks.  Here is the complete story.

Russian Physicist Proposes New Solution to the Fermi Paradox "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

"Alexander Berezin, a theoretical physicist at the National Research University of Electronic Technology in Russia, has proposed a new answer to Fermi's paradox but he doesn't think you're going to like it. Because, if Berezin's hypothesis is correct, it could mean a future for humanity that's 'even worse than extinction.'

'What if,' Berezin wrote in a new paper posted March 27 to the preprint journal, 'the first life that reaches interstellar travel capability necessarily eradicates all competition to fuel its own expansion?'"

In other words, could humanity's quest to discover intelligent life be directly responsible for obliterating that life outright? What if we are, unwittingly, the universe's bad guys?

And if you are not sure what the Fermi paradox is then the link should help, and there is a long explanation of that one in the article.

Soros Blames Putin & Russia for Italys New Anti-EU and Anti-immigrant Coalition Government "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As the Russiagate conspiracy theory continues to disintegrate in the US, other globalist anti-Russian voices remain strong, including George Soros who is busy scape-goating Moscow for all of the EUs problems and structural failures.

As Italys new insurgent anti-EU Coalition of the 5 Star Movement and The League settles into power, Soros is leading the charge in blaming the Italian elections on the Kremlin, while simultaneously painting a stark gloom and doom picture of a dystopic nationalist political future for Italy and Europe a scenario which seemingly threatens his lifes work of a globalized civil society network.

Perhaps Soros is regretting that he failed to deploy enough change agents in Italy, and was unable to sway the recent electoral upset  in favour of a more progressive pro-Brussels faction.

RT Internationals Robert Bridge explains how the Open Society agenda of agitating against Russia is still very much alive and well in Europe

By Robert Bridge

Apparently convinced that the Italian people support the flow of illegal aliens into their country, billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros imagines a Russian hand behind the rise of Italys Euroskeptic party.

For globalists like George Soros, who has spent a sizeable chunk of his personal fortune lobbying EU leaders for the unimpeded flow of migrants into their respective states, the last few days have been an unmitigated nightmare.

Two Italian anti-establishment parties, the hard-right League and the Five Star movement, forged a coalition government that puts a gang of Euroskeptics into power in the EUs fourth-lar...

365 days of gratitude "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

I was chatting when I heard the final call for my flight home.

I picked up my bag, hurried to the departure gate, got on the plane, found my seat and reached into my bag for my glasses to find they werent there.

The only place they could have been was on the floor where the bag had been while I was chatting.

Did I have time to go back for them? I wasnt sure but it was worth trying so I excuse-med-excuse-med against the incoming passengers to the front of the plane and explained my plight to the cabin attendant.

She smiled, asked which seat I was in and handed me my glasses.

Tonight Im grateful for friends who take more notice of my belongings than I do.

Dont ask for letters of recommendation up front "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Ive been sitting on this for a while, not wanting to piss off hiring committees who might evaluate my own applications. I have applied for over a hundred tenure-track faculty positions, and Ive had over a dozen in-person interviews. One of the things that has always struck me is the incredible degree to which the time of anyone not on the hiring committee is devalued. This is true of the applicants time, but today Im mainly talking about the time of their references.

Its typical to request three letters of recommendation with an application, but some departments will request four or (rarely) five. In most cases, the application is considered incomplete and will not be considered until all of the letters are submitted. If one of your references has a hard time with deadlines, tough.

In most cases, your references will be fairly senior scientists, Associate Professor or above. It would be nearly impossible, for example, for your Ph.D. advisor to be an Assistant Professor, since that position typically lasts about as long as a Ph.D. In my case, all three of my references were full Professors, one a department head. In nearly every case, all three references will be highly productive scientists. Their time is valuable, not just in terms of salary but in terms of advancing science. Requiring letters of recommendation up front wastes it.

Letters of recommendation should be requested by the committee, and they should be requested after the first cut.

But we need them to decide who makes the first cut!

Bullshit. Bullshit bullshit bullshit. I have been on search committees for two faculty positions, and I have advertised for and ultimately hired three postdocs. Three quarters of the applications are not even close to qualifying for serious consideration. Either the applicant has no record of publications or demonstrated interest in the field theyre applying to work in, or theyre in their third postdoc and have published two junior-authored papers in crappy journals. One glance at their CV is enough to ensure that theyre not going to make the short list no matter what their references say.

But it will slow down the hiring process!

Uh-huh. The hiring process moves glacially slow in any case, since the members of the hiring committee have lots of other responsibilities. There are large periods of time between successive committee meetings when nothing is happening. If the references are requested at the end of the first committee meeting, with a deadline of two weeks, i...

Failed farmland deals: a growing legacy of disaster and pain "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

2017 went down as one of the deadliest years ever for land defenders. It was also a pretty bad year for several land grabbers. A significant number of big farmland deals collapsed, adding to a growing list of projects that have backfired over the past few years. While this is good news for affected communities, many of them are now left dealing with the fall-out and still struggling to get their lands back. We may have made some gains in stopping the projects, but have urgent work to do to address what happens when they fail.

Theyve vigilantly built blockades, put their lives on the line and vigilantly halted any underhanded attempts by Forest Service and the Humboldt Redwood Company to log our glorious wild lands.

Hear activist Pluto, tell harrowing stories of defenders in tripods being attacked by logging company goons and coming out victorious! Marvel at close-up encounters with mountain lions! And you can do it, too! Tune in!

Lockdowns Stop Construction to West Virginia Pipeline "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

by Appalachians Against Pipelines / Its Going Down

Monday morning, June 4th, 3 people with Appalachians Against Pipelines prevented construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline for 4 hours by locking themselves to equipment along Route 219. The Mountain Valley Pipeline is slated to run under Route 219, a main thoroughfare for the area; pipeline fighters locked to drilling equipment that will be used to place pipe under the road. Police arrived on the scene shortly after 8AM. Although they repeatedly threatened to use violence (tasers, pepper spray, batons), protesters were extracted without harm by 11AM.

Im here to resist the Mountain Valley Pipeline because it represents some of the worst of what humanity can besacrificing the well being of communities and ecosystems for short-term corporate profit, said Lee Stewart of Loudoun County, VA, one of the protesters on site at todays action. The fire is catching, and as someone who is from the region, I want to to help spread it however I can. If we stand together and take action, we will stop this pipeline.

MVP construction crews are currently working on boring underneath Route 219 in preparation to lay pipe that will then travel up the steep and delicate topography of Peters Mountain, gravely endangering regional watersheds, ecology, and local residents. MVP intends to then bore through Peters Mountain, threatening the Appalachian Trail.

Heather Houchins, from Lindside, WV, stated the following in support of todays construction stoppage: I am certain we here in Monroe County know how important our water, our land, and our rights are. MVP is threatening to destroy all of this. Through n...

Brazil Has Fallen Prey To Coup Leaders And Generals "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the Brazilian capital, one finds an atmosphere of confusion and concern. The large square housing the monumental buildings that are home to the President of the Republic, the National Congress and the Supreme Federal Court does not seem to have enough room to contain all the contradictions and tensions that have accumulated in the country. The soft coup which led to the dismissal of Dilma and the swearing in of Temer was finalized by Lulas arrest. The anti-corruption Operation Lava Jato, launched by law enforcement in 2014, has involved a large part of the Brazilian political class and has had a profound effect on the political balance, causing fractures and restructuring, with a repositioning of all political and social forces.

Breaking News: Child Sex Trafficking Camp in Arizona Possibly Tied to the Clintons & Rothschilds "IndyWatch Feed World"

Short intro: Some very-very powerful people are involved in child trafficking, pedophilia and even child sacrifice. The mainstream media is also owned and controlled by very-very powerful people, so we are the only ones exposing them.

You're not going to see any of this on TV (unless it's to "debunk" the claims without any official investigation).

As a result, ever since PizzGate, a very powerful apparatus has been set in motion in an effort to gradually shut us down through sustained & continuous censorship practices. ALL social media platforms censor us to some extent, and, as a result, we've lost some 5x-10x the page count (some even more) and it's worse by the day.

Avoid carbs - especially the white and beige ones "IndyWatch Feed World"

Low-carb diets have been around for a while. But did you know the colour of the carbs you eat also matters - and as Dr Xand van Tulleken explains, it's the beige ones you really have to watch out for. Dr Faisal Maassarani is on a mission. The GP, from Kirkby, on Merseyside, wants to get his patients to eat fewer carbs and thereby improve their health. But there are a huge number of obstacles for Dr Maassarani. He works in one of the poorest regions of the country, with high unemployment, high obesity rates and low levels of education. The plan seemed simple to the point of naivety. He assembled a group of seven overweight and obese patients, with health problems like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure and carried out a few basic tests. He then enlisted chefs from a local cookery school to prepare a feast for them, to show that healthy food could be tasty, affordable and filling. Dr Maassarani also read them the riot act on the possible consequences of obesity and diabetes (gangrene, strokes, heart attacks, ulcers and more).

To Create True Sanctuary Cities, We Must End Racist Policing "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Cities across the US have enacted sanctuary measures to resist the Trump administrations escalation of anti-immigrant policing, but most municipal sanctuary measures have a central weakness: They only seek to protect immigrants deemed as law-abiding, leaving those already ensnared in a racist system of criminalization and policing unprotected. Sanctuary ordinances, such as the ones adopted by Chicago in 2012 and by the state of Illinois in 2017, seek to inhibit cooperation between local policing agencies and federal immigration authorities by prohibiting local police departments from using agency resources to hold immigrants for federal agents. But as with most sanctuary legislation, these bills distinguish otherwise law-abiding undocumented immigrants from criminal aliens, who are left unprotected by sanctuary measures and rendered highly vulnerable to detention and deportation.

Facebook Bans Imam for Slamming Terrorists "IndyWatch Feed War"

Imam Mohammad Tawhidi (Courtesy)Imam Mohammad Tawhidi (Courtesy)

Facebook this week banned Mohammad Tawhidi, a reformist imam from Australia, in his words because he made a sarcastic remark about Hamas, designated a terror organization by the United States.

Facebook blocked his profile and unpublished his fan page.

Tawhidi is known as the Imam of Peace with over one hundred thousand followers and part of his international mandate is to call out extremists and terrorists. He is not shy about calling a spade a spade and in this context, after Hamas launched a missile into Israel targeting children; he sarcastically called them a global charity organization.

For Facebook to allow Islamist extremists to say whatever they like and for anyone to make offensive remarks about Israel on a regular basis, it seems like double standards that they have banned Imam Tawhidi, said Clarions Raheel Raza.

Raza caught up with Tawhidi in Toronto and took the opportunity to ask him about this issue:

Ian Buruma's George Soros "IndyWatch Feed War"

Europe turns away from the US and bites the hand that feeds "IndyWatch Feed War"

President Trumps tariff war with Europe is wrongheaded, but hardly the only issue separating our closest allies from America, the country too many on the continent love to hate.

Well before his threatened steel and aluminum restrictions on European countries (as well as on Canada and Mexico), Trump slaughtered some of Europes most sacred cows.

He withdrew from the Paris accord on greenhouse-gas emissions and broke away from the Iran deal. Europeans strongly believe the former will save the planet. (It wont.) They also hope the latter will tame the Islamic Republic. (Again, nope.) As important, they want their continents economies to have access to Iranian markets.

Then Trump offended the Euros collective sense of decorum by moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

But on that, as on other issues, Europeans are far from united.

Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancil visited Israels capital recently and her government tentatively approved moving its embassy there. For that, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis called on Dancil to resign, accusing her of making secret deals with the Jews.

And Germany, once a top Israel booster, privately sided with Iohannis and against recognizing Israels capital. After Romania moves its embassy, Berlin fears, the Czechs, Bulgarians and others may also break ranks with the European Union.

A Washington source tells me the US ambassador in Berlin, Richard Grenell, has advised the Germans against interfering in their neighbors deliberations over embassy location. Other US envoys should also advocate the move to Jerusalem.

You Told Us: Security Trumps Human Rights "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

rights versus security

By a margin of 2:1, Clarion website visitors believe security trumps human rights.

We polled you as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was sworn in for a second four-year term on June 2. Sisi is committed to fighting Islamist terror, particularly from ISIS but his record on human rights is not exactly perfect.

Heres the result of the poll, followed by some of your comments:

Which is more important?

Security 62.4%

Human Rights 37.6%

Your Comments

Security can mean many things. And can be used to justify a lot of oppression. If you mean secure borders and illegal aliens, yes security is more important. If you are talking about a citizens human rights then you have to consider it is not about security but destroying opposition.

Once you eradicate violators of Human Rights AKA terrorists you no longer have to worry about security.

Human rights have to be first and foremost. Security soon degrades to oppression when a people are not free.

Security for citizens of sovereign nations with a well conceived and compassionate policy on immigration for those who would assimilate into the culture of the host nation. Immigration without assimilation is invasion.

There has to be a proper balance. Without security we would not be able to guarantee human rights. I dont get offended at an airport when I go through screening because I know that it is truly helping to protect my rights.

Overt security creates a fearful society, no creativity and ultimately a society like Nazi Germany or Iran/Turkey etc today.

You may well ask whether people need air or water. We need both.

Why are they at odds? Do you walk to school or carry your lunch? If the security is enforced by authority with moral values, human rights will not be an issue.

If youre dead, you can have all the human rights you want, but youll still be dead.

Rights do not come without responsibilities, as Jordan Peterson says.

Human rights wit...
