President Donald Trumps choice to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been running the agency on an acting basis since day one of his administration. Kevin McAleenan, whose nomination has won bipartisan support, oversees 60,000 employees and manages an annual budget of more than $13 billion. CBP, which is located in the Department of Homeland Security, focuses on regulating the flow of people and goods across U.S. international borders.
Trump announced his intention to nominate McAleenan on March 30, 2017, but didnt officially send his nomination to the U.S. Senate until May 22. Then McAleenan had to wait even longer, until October 24, for his confirmation hearing while anonymous allegations against him were investigated and debunked. If confirmed by the Senate, McAleenan would succeed R. Gil Kerlikowske, who served from March 2014 until the end of the Obama administration.
Born September 5, 1971, and raised in Hawaii, Kevin Kealoha McAleenan is the child of Michael McAleenan, currently a hearing officer in the L.A. County mental health court system, and Andrea (Hautala) McAleenan, now a special advisor to the president of Azusa Pacific University. When Kevin was a child his father earned a PhD in Sociology at the University of Hawaii and worked with at-risk youths at a Honolulu middle school. Kevin earned a B.A. in Political Science at Amherst College in 1994 and a J.D. at the University of Chicago Law School in 1998.
After law school, McAleenan practiced law in California for a few years, first at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, & Hampton from October 1998 to February 2000, and then at Gunderson Dettmer from February 2000 to October 2001.
In the wake of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, McAleenan decided to refocus his career onto national security issues. He first applied to the FBI, but he was soon contacted by Robert Bonner, who had been recently confirmed as the commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service (later renamed CBP). In November 2001, McAleenan moved to Washington DC and set to work establishing the embryonic Office of Antiterrorism in Washington, DC. Two years later, he was promoted to its executive director....

The skill to get hot without getting mad to have a good argument that doesnt become personal is critical in life. But its one that few parents teach to their children. We want to give kids a stable home, so we stop siblings from quarreling and we have our own arguments behind closed doors. Surprise, surprise; last year, the FBI was unable to access data from 7800 devices thats over 50% - despite having legal authority to do so i.e. a legitimate warrant from a real judge. Wray warned the audience of cyber-security experts from around the world: This is an urgent public safety issue. [The solution] is not so clear cut. The FBI has been trying to require manufacturers to provide backdoors into their devices for law enforcement who obtain a warrant. However, the public is demanding more security from the government, not less, especially in light of the fact that the latest batch of cyber criminals were a literal cabal within both the FBI and Justice Department to attack the current President and help cover the crimes of his opponent and her husband, a past president. Just a few months ago some wondered if the FBI was not playing a deceitful game by pretending not to be able to break through current encryption techniques. However, it has recently come to light that utilizing the best commercially-available security practices can stop government snooping cold even one level of technology above that level currently available to the FBI. Yes, this is a huge problem for law enforcement, but one that is self-generated. Therefore, this is an impossible time for Mr. Wray to effectively make this case due to his own Bureaus recent and ongoing illegal activities. Wray could, at any moment, throw open the doors of complete transparency to the FBIs involvement with the Clinton Crime Cabal. Instead, he has chosen to continue to use the immense power of the Bureau to stonewall Congressional investigations and obstruct justice at every step of the way. Go to: https://www.virtualshield.com/billstill Good morning, Im still reporting on: Mike Pence Rescues Iraqi Christians, 1977 Synopsis: According to the Washington Free Beacon, Vice President Mike Pence has caused State Department money to be shifted around to bring much-needed relief to persecuted Christians in the Iraqi city of Nineva after being devastated by the ISIS terror army. In an October speech, Pence promised that the administration would stop the State Departments ineffective relief efforts that gave all money to the U.N. to distribute in Iraq. The United States will work hand in hand from this day forward with faith-based groups and private organizations to help those who are persecuted for their faith. This is the moment, now is the time, and America will support these people in their hour of need. ISIS deci mated the Christian population in Iraq. There were 1.4 million Christians in Iraq. That has now dropped to below 250,000. The new money will go towards restoring basic services, such as water, electricity, sewage, health and education. The Knights of Columbus, one of the largest Catholic charities, has sent millions of dollars in donations to the Catholic archdiocese in Northern Iraq, one of the few groups on the ground providing relief to Christians and Yazidis and help to rebuild their homes. - Trade Genius Academy: Learn the safe, sure way to trade. https://www.TradeGeniusAcademy.com Good evening, Im still reporting on: Synopsis:Democrats have completely lost touch with the concept of forgoing some possible small, short-term political gain at the expense of the welfare of the nation as a whole. Yes, even presidents talk the way President Trump reportedly talked in a small private meeting in the Oval office yesterday. President Obama used those exact words to describe some of the poorer nations of the world, however, that never made the huge splash in the news for two reasons; #1 Democrats were scared to death of besmirching the reputation of the leader of the evil empire; and #2, Republicans had sufficient respect for the office, despite it being inhabited by the evil emperor, that they kept such private conversations, private, for the benefit of the nation as a whole. Democrats had better wake up. They are so desperate to destroy President Trump that they will do anything, say anything, even divulge private conversations in the Oval Office during heated negotiations. Guess what? No more visits to the White House. But also guess what? We, the American people, see it. We know what you are doing, and one minor swear word is no surprise to anyone. And it dwindles to insignificance compared to the major turnarounds Trump has already achieved across the face of our government. What did you think about the 5th grade tattletale? You immediately shunned him. Here is just one tiny example of what we see. Trump has already made a HUGE difference for millions of wage-earning families across the nation, ALREADY! Investors are flocking to the yen, euro and other currencies amid promise of quickening growth overseas
Updated Jan. 14, 2018 9:43 a.m. ET
The promise of accelerating economic growth overseas is propelling investor funds into the yen, euro and many emerging-market currencies, intensifying a yearlong siege on the U.S. dollar.
The ICE Dollar Index hit its lowest level in more than three years on Friday, extending a nearly 10% decline last year that marked the dollars steepest annual fall since 2003. The index tracks the value of the currency vs. a basket of U.S. trading partners.

Data control in the professional industry has become a very important element in the areas of globalized workforce, job finding and employment solutions.
Since the advent of the internet and its solution of interconnecting individuals and establishments across every part of the globe, the professional industry has leveraged on it as a tool for significant expansion. Several platforms hosted on the internet have taken advantage of its interconnectivity to break previously existing barriers that hindered job flexibility and restrictions.
Limitations of centralized platforms
Platforms such as LinkedIn, Upwork, and Remote.com have provided freelancers platforms to showcase themselves and find unlimited opportunities within the specific platforms. These networks have enabled professionals from different parts of the globe to connect and find areas where their services are needed. However, the centralized nature of such independent networks imply significant limitations that are hurting the professional industry.
The inability of personal information, qualifications and resume to be shearable between multiple platforms most often limits the chances of professionals who are laden with the task of uploading and updating their information independently unto any new platform. The tedious nature of this task and its complications sometimes leads to omissions that could be costly to these professionals.
The risk of central control
The fact that these independent networks hoard such data of individuals in their custody implies that they retain total control of such information and may do as they wish at any given point in time. This is the cost of centralization. A typical example is seen with the case of LinkedIn which in previous years provided a public API which allowed users to transfer their data to other applications. As a result 30,000 applications integrated, many large companies were born, and industry innovation flourished. In 2015, LinkedIn abruptly restricted API access and as a result many companies died and innovation slowed?.
As blockchain and decentralization continues to change the way things are done, transferring power to the real owners, the professional industry is beginning to exp...

Syrian pro-government activists confirmed HTS advance, and reported that Russian warplanes conducted dozens of airstrikes against HTS fighters and vehicles in the southeastern Idlib countryside to slow down its advance.
From its side, the Hezbollah media wing in Syria announced that the SAA killed 28 fighters of HTS and its allies during the last few hours and over 90 other fighters in the last four days.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Tiger Forces and Lebanese Hezbollah deployed several elite units between Sinjar town and Abu Dali village in the southeastern Idlib countryside to repel the HTS counter-attack according to pro-government sources. HTS attempts to besiege the SAA units deployed south of the Abu Duhur airbase in eastern Idlib.

[Amen] obtained a microscope whose light source was an incandescent bulb, but the light from it seemed awfully dim even at its brightest setting. Rather than hunt down a replacement, he decided to replace the bulb with a 1W LED mounted on a metal cylinder. The retrofit was successful, but there were numerous constraints on his work that complicated things. The original bulb and the LED replacement differed not just in shape and size, but also in electrical requirements. The bulb was also part of an assembly that used a two-pronged plug off to the side for power. In the end, [Amen] used 3D printing, a bit of metal work, and a bridge rectifier on some stripboard to successfully replace his microscopes incandescent bulb assembly with an LED. He even used a lathe to make connector pins that mated properly with the microscopes proprietary power connector, so that the LED unit could be a drop-in module.
Working on existing equipment always puts constraints on ones work, usually due to space limitations, but sometimes also proprietary signals. For example, a common issue when refitting a projector with an LED is to discover that the projector expects a stock bulb, and refuses to boot up without one. Happily, the microscope didnt care mu...

Tesla Inc. has kicked off production of its long-awaited electricity-producing shingles that Elon Musk says will transform the rooftop solar industry.
Manufacturing of the photovoltaic glass tiles began last month at a factory in Buffalo built with backing from New York State, the company said in an email Tuesday. It comes more than a year after Tesla unveiled the shingles to a mix of fanfare and skepticism.
The appeal: a sleek, clean solar product, especially for homeowners seeking to replace aging roofs. The tiles -- from most angles -- look like ordinary shingles. They allow light to pass from above and onto a standard flat solar cell.
Tesla, the biggest U.S. installer of rooftop-solar systems, piloted the product on the homes of several employees. The company expects to begin installing roofs for customers within the next few months.

Podesta has been around for a while and is remembered as the emcee of the Democrats White House presser held right after Bill Clinton was impeached.
In 2016 John Podesta became famous again when his emails were released by WikiLeaks before the Presidential election. The emails showed the tremendous amount of fraud, collusion the media, lies and criminal acts surrounding the Hillary Clinton campaign. Podesta, the Head of the Clinton Campaign, had emails that showed money going to and from the Clinton Foundation from foreign nationals and more. (See a complete summary of Podesta emails here.)
Now it looks like Podesta is right in the middle of the fake dossier that was reportedly provided to the FISA court to request permission to spy on candidate Trump.
Its unknown if the dossier was used as support for Obama and Hillary spying on candidate Trump or if it was used to obtain permission to spy on the Trump team after the spying was already in place. Both of which would be criminal acts due to the dossier being a fraud and using the government to spy on an opposing candidate being beyond belief and criminal as well.
Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta met with the founder of the opposition rese...

(EAN) Late at night in Jerusalems Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a small group of Armenians took their turn to clean the site where Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified and buried.
They wiped the top of the tomb and refilled the oil lamps. The priests did it a bit perfunctorily, part of a daily routine, while the ritual visibly moved the pilgrims. Some were in tears.
As a result of a painstaking agreement worked out centuries ago, when Jerusalem was under Ottoman control, Armenians share responsibility for maintaining some of the citys most sacred Christian sites. At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Armenians clean inside the edicule, which encloses the tomb, and its surrounding area, several times a week.
In 1948, Armenians in Jerusalem numbered about 16,000. Today, that number has shrunk; estimates range from 700-1000, with a smaller community in Bethlehem.
Some in the community are concerned about the decline in their numbers. In addition to continuing unrest in Jerusalem, some Armenians feel they are less welcome in Jerusalem these days, despite their integral, centuries-long presence in the city. We are not given international passports and are often mistreated like other ethnic groups who are not Jewish, one woman from the Armenian Quarter, who did not want to be identified, told Eurasianet.org.
This has implications for Armenians role in maintaining Jerusalems sacred sites, as well: the community supports the Armenian Patriarchate in Jerusalem, which in turn administers the Armenian Quarter. Some Armenians feel that their declining numbers, and their quarters high value a hub of tourism in the Old City could lead to them losing ownership.
Today, though, in spite of their relatively small numbers, Armenians work to maintain their presence in Jerusalem. About 40 students, most of them from Armenia, study at the Theological Seminary of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem. There are daily Armenian church services in Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and a steady stream of visiting pilgrims from Armenia and the diaspora. Centuries on, Jerusalems central role in Armenian religious life remains constant.

In addition to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin, I am now accepting Monero. You can access my address and QR code for all of these cryptocurrencies (as well as any I might add in the future) by clicking here.
However, theres now a way you can help me out without having to spend any money of your own: by using your computers excess CPU power to mine Monero.
Monero is one of the most popular and fastest growing cryptocurrencies, and by using your computer to mine coins, youll be giving me a donation without having to spend any money of your own, though depending on where you live, what computer you have, and how often you run the miner, you may incur a slight increase in your electric bill. My Monero miner does not install malware or anything on your computer.
MattForney.com now has a built-in Monero miner that automatically starts whenever you visit the site and uses your excess CPU power to mine coins. This process is entirely voluntary and you can opt out of it permanently by scrolling to the widget at the bottom of every page and pressing the Stop button. (Im currently searching for a way to make it opt-in instead of opt-out.) You can also increase or decrease the amount of CPU power youre using to mine (the default is 70 percent) with the plus or minus buttons.
The miner will run so long as my site is open in at least one window on your computer, allowing you to mine coins while you read my articles or listen to my podcasts. Having my site open on multiple tabs, windows, or browsers on the same device will make no difference. Please note that the miner is disabled if you are using a smartphone or other mobile device.
You can also use the miner by clicking here to access it directly. Click the Start Mining button to begin mining coins. You can use the Threads and Speed controls to increase or decrease how much CPU power you want to dedicate to mining, and use the pause button to stop mining. You cannot run this separate miner while simultaneously using the built-in miner on my site on the same device. This miner is a good option if you want to support me without having to be on my site all the time.
More details about my Monero miner can be found here. I appreciate your support and I hope to continue doing great things with your help.

A sheriff's department in Florida is getting destroyed on Facebook for arresting and publicly shaming a couplefor selling shrimp to make an extra buck.
I don't particularly care about Melania Trump one way or the other, but I don't like to see her humiliated publicly. I take Trump's infidelity as a given, and I guess the fact that he continues to lie about it should be a mark against him, but the state of his marriage isn't something that interests me or that I think should be used as cudgel against him. On the other hand, the fact that he paid a ransom to keep this affair secret does have relevancy to whether or not he is subject to blackmail and in the habit of giving things of value to people to keep his secrets.
In his book Spymaster: My Thirty-two Years in Intelligence and Espionage Against the West, former KGB head of foreign counterintelligence Oleg Kalugin disclosed some of the fake news that the Russians put into Americas national discourse during the directorship of Yuri Andropov:
Under Andropov the disinformation branch of the KGB flourished. For both domestic and external consumption, it concocted stories to deceive, confuse, and influence targeted audiences. It conducted operations to weaken Soviet adversaries and to undermine the internal stability and foreign policies of the Western world in order to facilitate favorable conditions for the eventual triumph of Communism.
The CIA ousted President Nixon; the CIA arranged the 1978 mass suicide and murder of more than nine hundred people of the Jonestown cult; the U.S. was developing an ethnic weapon that would kill blacks and spare whites; the CIA was behind the assassinations of Olof Palme in Sweden, Indira Gandhi in India, and Aldo Moro in Italy, and an attempt on the popes life; the U.S. military planned to use tactical nuclear weapons in Italy in case the left parties came to power; U.S. Army scientists developed the AIDS virus; Americans steal foreign babies to use their organs for transplant these and hundreds of other faked stories hit the front pages of the world media at one time or another. And though Andropov died in 1984, his legacy and that of his KGB predecessors in the area of psychological warfare eventually developed into practical guidelines for the KGB and its friends and allies across the world.
He also wrote about more sinister active measures.
One of our dirty tricks involved a nasty letter-writing campaign against African diplomats at the United Nations an idea cooked up by KGB headquarters in Moscow and approved by the Communist Party Central Committee. Our KGB staff, using new typewriters and wearing gloves so as not to leave fingerprints, typed up hundreds of anonymous hate letters and sent them to dozens of African missions. The letters, purportedly from white supremacists as well as average Americans, were filled with virulent racist diatribes. The African diplomats publicized some of the letters as examples of the racism still rampant in America, and members of the American and foreign...
I took a look at CNN Politics this morning and saw this blurb which I found profoundly disturbing:
But then I realized that the president had been on Twitter disputing the accounts of what he said. In one tweet, he claimed that what he said was tough but different from what was being reported. In two other tweets he expressed his view that the immigration deal under discussion would force America to accept large numbers of people from high crime countries which are doing badly. And, then, finally, he tried to contextualize his shithole remarks to make them less personal to the people of Haiti.
Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said take them out. Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings unfortunately, no trust!
Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 12, 2018
So, saying Haiti is a shithole is not derogatory? Saying a whole continent is a shithole is not derogatory?
The whole spectacle makes me want to vomit.
The success of the current Syrian government operations against al-Qaeda in Idleb governorate can be measured by the volume of U.S. propaganda against it. When Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House was first published, after reading most of the extracts and watching the author across many television channels, I concluded that the book was deliberate character assassination, and a follow-on to the Deep States frantic earlier attempt to flip the Electoral College, make up a vast array of lies about the Russians hacking the election, and launch the seditionist #RESIST movement funded by George Soros and organized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Zionist secret police most active across the USA, the host state for the Zionist parasite.
After reading the book every single word I find this book to be a catalog of defamatory statements with no endnotes. While the author claims to have recordings for some of the interviews, his many appearances on television suggest that he is a serial liar for...

Catholic bishop heckled by opponents of child sex abuse
22 March 2015
Newly named bishop of Osorno in Chile Juan Barros was pushed and shoved by demonstrators carrying black balloons as he squeezed through the crowd in Saint Matthews Church.
Many Chilean Catholics say Barros covered up the sexual abuse of children committed by his superior Fr. Fernando Karadima Farina in the 1980s and 90s.
Karadima was found guilty by the Vatican.

Crisis of faith in Chile as pope visits amid sexual abuse scandal
Santiago, Chile The last time a pope visited Chile was in 1987, when the then staunchly Catholic South American country was in the midst of military rule.
Even communists embraced John Paul II, because of the Chilean Churchs outspoken defence of human rights.
But 31 years on, the arrival of the first Latin American pope is not provoking the same euphoria.
Chile has suffered some of the worst cases of ecclesiastic sex abuse in the region, and the Catholic Church is paying the price.
When the former archbishop of Buenos Aires became Pope Francis in 2013, his charisma and above all his promises to reform some of the darkest practices of the Vatican, captured the imagination and admiration of much of the world, especially in his region.
He vowed that......
Riots have erupted over the rape and murder of 8-year-old Zainab Ansara (inset) (Photo: Video screenshot)
The horrific tragedy of Zainab Ansari, an eight-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Kasur, Pakistan, has the attention of the whole world. Its heartbreaking and gut-wrenching to read the news and see her parents sorrow.
Recently, 10 other girls have been sexually assaulted in a similar way in Kasur, while law enforcement have been impotent. These are only the reported cases because many go unreported for fear.
True, there are riots and protests all over Pakistan about Zainabs brutal attack. Two have died and others wounded, but there are some key questions that have yet to be answered.
Why is it that law enforcement have not taken any action until now when there have been previous cases of sexual assault? The reason these cases were hushed up is because rich and powerful feudal landlords may have been involved, so the assaults were pushed under the table. In some cases, money was given to the family, or they were threatened to stay silent.
No one has been caught and convicted, because if that happens, it will start a chain reaction in which the so-called gentry will be stripped naked and dishonored. The lives and honor of the young victims are no match for the powerful and political.
Zainabs murder is symptomatic of a much larger problem that is not being addressed. Children in Pakistan are vulnerable to religious schools and extremist organizations. Madrassas are mushrooming all over the country with little or no accountability about who is running them and what is being taught. There are no statistics about child molestation, rape, sodomy and battering all of which are rampant.
There is no secular education, let alone sex education, which the religious clergy are deadly against. All mullahs have issued fatwas that sex education is vulgar. In a patriarchal and misogynist society, young...

January 11, 2018 marked the 16th year that Guantanamo prison has exclusively imprisoned Muslim men, subjecting many of them to torture and arbitrary detention.
About thirty people gathered in Washington D.C., convened by Witness Against Torture, (WAT), for a weeklong fast intended to close Guantanamo and abolish torture forever. Six days ago, Matt Daloisio arrived from New York City in a van carefully packed with twelve years worth of posters and banners, plus sleeping bags, winter clothing and other essentials for the week.
Matt spent an hour organizing the equipment in the large church hall housing us. He curates it, said one WAT organizer.
Later, Matt reflected that many of the prisoners whose visages and names appear on our banners have been released. In 2007, there were 430 prisoners in Guantanamo. Today, 41 men are imprisoned there. Shaker Aamer has been reunited with the son whom he had never met while imprisoned in Guantanamo. Mohammed Ould Slahi, author of Guantanamo Diary, has finally been released. These encouraging realities dont in the slightest diminish the urgency we feel in seeking the release of the 41 men still imprisoned in Guantanamo.
Not even one of the 41 prisoners now in Guantanamo was captured by the U.S. military on a battlefield. Afghan militias and the Pakistani military were paid cash bounties for selling 86 percent of these prisoners into US custody. Imagine the green light given for other countries to practice buying and selling of human beings.
Aisha Manar, working with the London Campaign to Close Guantanamo, points out that the rights violating practices surrounding Guantanamo are now a model for the detention and incarceration polices of the US and other states.
This chilling reality is reflected in Associated Press reports...
We need to think about building a world defined by networks governed by rules, but with no rulers.
Ultimately, the core question here is a simple one. What is a more serious threat: the ability of people to publish false claims (which have existed since humans developed the capacity to speak or write and are subject to correction), or vesting governments around the world to censor entire websites and social media postings on the ground that they have judged them to be false or Fake? Since the advent of the internet, the one danger regarded as most menacing was having states and corporations assume control over the political content that one can express.

Palestinian factions to gather in Ramallah to determine how to press ahead in wake of Trumps Jerusalem declaration
By Jack Khoury Jan 14, 2018 2:40 PM
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris, December 22, 2017
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to indicate what course the Palestinians will take a continuation of the diplomatic process or demanding the implementation a one-state solution during a dramatic meeting slated to take place in Ramallah on Sunday, Palestinian officials told Haaretz.
The meeting of the Palestinian Central Council is convening against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trumps December 6 announcement declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and the unprecedented rift this caused between the Palestinian Authority and Washington.
Sundays meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah seat of the Palestinian Authority government will be held with representatives from most Palestinian factions but two important organizations, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, announced that they will not attend, even though they were invited.
Hamas spokesman Fauzi Barhum criticized the decision to convene the gathering in Ramallah, saying that it should have been held in a different country to ensure the participation of senior representatives from all the factions.
Despite Hamas and Islamic Jihad shunning the meeting, Salim Zanoun, chairman of the Fatah Central Committee, said over the weekend that at least 90 of the 114 representatives of the council will attend the meeting, and they are expected to approve recommendations and suggestions that are raised.
Haaretz has learned that in discussions that were held over the weekend both by the Fatah Central Committee and by the PLOs Executive Committee, a slew of suggestions is being considered; among them is the idea of nixing the Oslo Accords and the security coordination on the grounds that Israel has breached all agreements so the Palestinians are not committed to continue and uphold the accords.
Other elements in Fatah and in the PLO are leaning toward the option of continuing international efforts, especially through the United Nations, the European Union, China and Russia in order to advance international recognition of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders.
According to Fatah officials, the next Palestinian move would be to implement their demand to make the conflict an international issue and demand that the UN set up a team to resolve it. The United S...

One of the responsibilities of a state, under the international system, is to provide protection for its citizens. Thats particularly important for a nation like Badgeria, which has unconventional economics and politics historically nations trapped in aggressive forms of capitalism or fascism attempt to destabilize and conquer nations attempting to offer a more humane alternative. It is an unfortunate reality, but its a reality and Badgerians are, above all, realistic.
You can tell a great deal about the purpose of a nations military by how its structured; by its logistics [stderr] The Badgerians realized early on that an offensive military is vastly more expensive than a defensive military, so they focused entirely on making Badgeria difficult to conquer, extremely painful to hold, and an undesirable target, besides. Badgeria has modest mineral wealth, fairly good farm-land, and the spectacular vineyards where Badgerian Black Wine grapes flourish. Yet, Badgerias greatest defense is due to its non-accumulative economy: theres nothing in Badgeria thats particularly worth taking or conquering, there are no military secrets, there are no great accumulations of gold or valuables a foreign power that desired to conquer Badgeria would mostly end up with a lot of art and wine, in return for massive casualties and a decades-long insurgency.
Badgeria lifted its military strategy from Switzerlands: invest purely in defense and take advantage of interior logistics. The Badgerian Department of Defense invested a great deal of time and energy in plotting fields of fire throughout approaches into the country, as well as critical locations internally, and has set up mixtures of concealed firing positions that can be manned, as well as remote-controlled firing positions. The remote controlled firing positions include things like cratering charges, anti-personnel charges, and cluster munitions. This is all very nasty stuff, and the Badgerians consider it an unfortunate necessity given that there are world-level superpowers that occasionally flex their muscles.
Remember what happened to the US troops in Iraq, when insurgents began destroying their patrols with emplaced improvised explosive devices (IEDs)? Imagine how much worse it would be if a military power was trying to occupy a country that had professionally installed, military-grade, mu...

AFP/File / by Joe Schmid | Lactalis has recalled over 12 million packages of baby formula in 83 countries over salmonella fears
The chief executive of Frances Lactalis group on Sunday vowed compensation for victims of salmonella-tainted baby milk as he revealed that recalls were now under way in 83 countries.
Giving his first interview in nearly 20 years, Emmanuel Besnier who heads the family-controlled company, told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper that the recall involved more than 12 million packages of Picot, Milumel, Celia and other brands of powdered baby milk.
We are going to draw the lessons from this crisis and set out an even stricter hygiene framework, in collaboration with the authorities, he said.
Asked why he had not publicly addressed parents concerns as worries about the outbreak intensified, Besnier said: Its true, by nature Im not very forthcoming.
In a crisis like this, we act first, and perhaps I didnt take the necessary time to explain things.
A total of 37 babies have fallen ill in France, health authorities said late Friday, along with a case in Spain and a suspected case in Greece, but Besnier said no new cases had been reported since December 8, a week after the recall was announced.
The case in Spain goes back to October, he added, referring to the two cases outside France reported Friday by the Eurosurveillance medical journal.
Besniers interview included two of the first public photographs of the secretive leader in years, at the Lactalis headquarters in Laval, western France.
It came after finance minister Bruno Le Maire summoned Besnier to a meeting over the crisis Friday, in which the chief executive agreed to pull from store and pharmacy shelves all products from the Craon factory where the outbreak was found, instead of those dating back to February.
But Besnier did not appear with Le Maire at a press conference after the meeting, despite calls by several government officials for him to face the public.
Not hiding things
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the group by families who say their children got salmonella poisoning after drinking powdered milk made by the company.
But Besnier, 47, denied claims by an association of victims families that Lactal...

QUESTION: Mr. Armstrong; You have been calling for the dollar to decline against the Euro and it should test the 125 level. Do you see the dollar continuing to decline which then breaks the back of Europe with deflation and then everything flips?
ANSWER: Last year was an outside reversal to the upside meaning it made a new low since 2008 reaching 10341 and then closed above the 2016 high. That confirmed we should see a lower dollar in 2018 and our target in the 125 level has been slow in coming. There is no reversal of fortune without a closing above 140. Our minimum target was 12570 with the next forming at 12890. Thereafter, we reach the major resistance in the 135-140 zone. The technical resistance begins just shy of 124.
The Euro is rallying because the ECB is seen to be abandoning its QE program which has failed. The rush to the Euro is the assumption that with higher rates, at last money will come home. We still have a minefield of political issues. Creditors are dissatisfied with the lack of austerity in Greece as well as Italy. Our critical turning point remains March 2018.
The crisis yet to unfold is will there be buyers of European debt to take up what the ECB has been buying? This is part of our forecast with rising rates and the more they rise the worse the budget will get. There is just no way out of this crisis without serious reform. So people rushing into the Euro thinking this is a turn-around long-term for the dollar will be shown that the old saying fools rush in where...

From Alhaji Adebayos post offering an 8-day special on FGM services (Photo: Facebook)
Graphic images of a young girl being subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) were posted on Facebook by a Nigerian man advertising an eight-day bonanza of free cutting in his home, reported CNN.
Alhaji Adebayo, a building contractor from Ilorin, Kwara State in central Nigeria, has organized mass cuttings in the past and reportedly runs a charity for poor families that cannot afford to pay the normal fee for the brutal procedure, as do many wealthy people in the area.
FGM is illegal in Nigeria, but it is still a widespread practice. No one has been convicted for performing FGM in Nigeria to date.
The message, which was accompanied by pictures of a crowd gathered around the girl who was being being held down by men while she was mutilated, read: Bonanza! Bonanza! Bonanza!!! Free of Charge 8 days, Yearly opportunity has come again. Directions were provided to the house.
The day after he posted the now-deleted advertisement, Adebayo said he had been visited by anti-FGM activists. They made me realize the disadvantages and implication in doing mutilation for (the) female child, he stated. I urge every parent to put an end to the female circumcisionbecause of (the) problems that might come out from there later in the future, he added.
He also claimed he was unaware that the practice was illegal.
Female genital mutilation includes all procedures involving the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Short-term effects include hemorrhaging, pain, shock and death. Long-term effects include problems with sexual relations, complications giving birth, cysts, chroni...

Dozens of women attended soccer games in Saudi Arabia this weekend. Its the first time they have been allowed to watch live football with men also in attendance.
The new arrangement also means new job opportunities as security checks at the grounds must be performed by women. Some of those watching games got into the spirit, painting team emblems on the faces of their children, who do not need to wear the hijab.
Its the latest in a series of measures launched in 2017 to give women greater participation in public life in a society dominated by men under Islamist codes.
In another change, the Saudi Education Ministry announced women could enter colleges with a cellphone and even make calls and surf the net. The decision, which was announced in October 2017, affects all university and higher education colleges. Any woman caught doing anything inappropriate with their phone faces punishment.

Security experts at Levono have spotted a firmware backdoor, tracked CVE-2017-3765, in RackSwitch and BladeCenter networking switch families during an internal security audit.
An authentication bypass affects only in RackSwitch and BladeCenter switches running ENOS (Enterprise Network Operating System), the tech giant promptly addressed it with firmware updates last week.
The Enterprise Network Operating System (ENOS) is the firmware that powers some Lenovo and IBM RackSwitch and BladeCenter switches.
The backdoor was intentionally inserted by Nortel that added it at the request of a BSSBU OEM customer.
An authentication bypass mechanism known as HP Backdoor was discovered during a Lenovo security audit in the Telnet and Serial Console management interfaces, as well as the SSH and Web management interfaces under certain limited and unlikely conditions. states the security advisory.
This bypass mechanism can be accessed when performing local authentication under specific circumstances using credentials that are unique to each switch. the exploitation of the backdoor could grant the attacker admin-level access.
Below the list of ENOS interfaces and authentication configurations affected by the issue:

Wes Streeting urges Jeremy Corbyn to back continued membership of EUs single market and customs union

Labours Brexit policy is now the single biggest barrier to Britain remaining in the EU single market, the Ilford North MP, Wes Streeting, will claim on Saturday.
Streeting is one of a well-coordinated group of vocal backbench rebels campaigning for leader Jeremy Corbyn to harden Labour policy by saying he would back continued membership of the single market and the customs union.
In a speech to the Fabian Societys annual conference in London on Saturday, Streeting will say: On the UKs future relationship with the European Union the single biggest issue facing our country in a generation we find ourselves in the terrible position where it is the Labour party that currently stands as the single biggest barrier to the UKs membership of the single market and customs union.
With Labour, there would be a majority in the Commons for single market membership, but not without us. If the Labour party announced tomorrow that we would keep Britain in the single market and customs union, it would be a game-changing moment in British politics. The policy would command a majority in the Commons and a majority in the country.
An amendment to the European withdrawal bill tabled last month by Nottingham East MP Chris Leslie, which he said would ensure the government made legal provision to remain in the customs union, won the backing of more than 60 Labour MPs, against the advice of whips.
Labours formal position is that Britains interests would be best served by retaining membership of the single market and customs un...

Jeremy Corbyn has suggested that the Special Relationship with the US does not exist and said that links with the EU, India, and China are just as important.
The Labour leader said he is not sure that anyone has succeeded in defining the special relationship as he denied that the US is Britains most important partner.
He criticised the endless offensive remarks by Donald Trump about women, minorities and different faiths as Emily Thornberry, the shadow Foreign Secretary, called the US President a racist.
Mr Corbyn told ITVs Peston on Sunday: I think there are many important relationships. The US one is obviously culturally and economically significant and important.
Also the trading relationships we have around the world with obviously the EU, but also with India and China and the rest of the world are very important.
Also our relationship with international institutions such

BERLIN, Jan 14 (Reuters) German Chancellor Angela Merkel is considering joining French President Emmanuel Macron at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week in what could turn into an epic clash of competing world views with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Merkel, who has been struggling to put together a government since a German election in September, had been expected to skip the annual gathering of leaders, CEOs, bankers and celebrities in the Swiss Alps for a third straight year.
But after clinching a preliminary coalition agreement with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) on Friday, German officials said Merkel could travel to Davos after all, possibly setting up a major confrontation with Trump, who is expected to speak on the final day of the forum.
An appearance would signal Merkels return to the world stage after months of political limbo in which she has avoided the limelight and been dismissed by some in the German and international media as a spent force.
It would also allow her and Macron, who is scheduled to speak at the forum on Jan. 24, two days before Trump, to reaffirm their commitment to reforming the European Union after Britains decision to leave, and to defend liberal democratic values in the face of Trumps America First policies.
Merkels spokesman Steffen Seibert was coy last week when asked whether she might attend the WEF, which will run from Jan. 23-26 under the banner Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World and will attract some 60 heads of state and government.
But after clinching a preliminary deal with the SPD, the chances that she could attend appear to have risen. German officials said no final decision had been taken and that Merkel may wait for the outcome of an SPD congress in Bonn next Sunday where the party will formally decide whether to enter coalition talks with her conservatives before committing.
Officials at the WEF said they believed Merkel was still considering whether to attend. If she does, it is unlikely that she or Macron would overlap with Trump, who is expected to arrive on the afternoon of Jan. 25.
This years forum will be opened by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Jan. 23. Britains Theresa May, Canadas Justin Trudeau and Israels Benjamin Netanyahu are also expected, as well as celebrities such as actress Cate Blanchett and musician Elton John.
Last years gathering took place in the week leading up to Trumps inauguration and was headlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who signalled his readiness to fill the vacuum in global leadership created by Americas shift inward....

As President Trump nears his first anniversary in office, he faces an unforgiving political landscape. Every word he says and every action he takes will either help him keep a Republican Congress or hand control to Democrats.
And if Dems get the gavel, impeachment could be the result.
This is the binary world Trump inhabits, and seen through that lens, the uproar over the presidents disparaging remarks about Haiti and other poor countries helps Dems in their goal of hobbling if not ending his presidency.
Despite his denial that he used the words shithole countries, most of the media instantly branded him a racist. After a few days of saturation coverage, polls will show a disapproving public and the ritual beatdown will be complete.
Then well be on to the next crisis because this is life with Trump in the White House. He and we are always on the razors edge because thats who he is.
Thats been the pattern for a year, and the president has managed to keep his head above water. But past performance is not a guarantee of future results especially in an election year when passions against him are already overheating.
Consider that a potty-mouth president is hardly a new phenomenon. John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon said far worse things, not to mention the words Bill Clinton must have used during his Oval Office trysts. But Trump is in a unique position.
Not because of what he says or does, but because of the reaction to it. With over half the country needing no more reason than his election to demand his removal, and with many Democrats promising impeachment if they gain power, every mistake is potentially fatal.
Each one gives the anti-Trump media license to go from zero to DEFCON 1, signifying an extreme national emergency.
Yet while a biased media hyperventilating is no virtue, Trumps great flaw is that he keeps giving them ammunition. One minute hes riding high, the next hes running for his life.
The shitthole storm is a perfect case in point.
Still basking in the afterglow of getting tax reform passed, Trump confidently convened a bipartisan group of congressional members for a televised meeting Wednesday on the...
Q&A: Tunisias protest leaders vow to keep up pressure
The anti-austerity protests come as Tunisians mark the seventh anniversary of the fall of longtime leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was forced from power after a popular revolution in 2011.
Rallies have been held in Tunis, the capital, and elsewhere across the country, led by the civil movement Fech Nestannew (What are we waiting for?). Nearly 800 protesters have been arrested, according to United Nations figures, including 200 people between the ages of 15 and 20.
A 2016 deal between Tunisia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a large reason behind the austerity measures, critics say. The four-year, $2.8bn IMF loan is tied to a promise by the Tunisian government to car...
It might surprise you, Dear Reader, that not every project featured on Hackaday needs to pulsate with LEDs, or update the world about its goings-on over Twitter. They dont even, contrary to what you may have heard, need to have an Arduino inside. No, sometimes you can pull off a pretty neat hack with nothing more than some wood, a couple of tools, and a unique idea which repurposes something that would otherwise be in a landfill.
Such is the case with the latest project from [Keith Decent], which uses plywood and the spines of old books to create a secret compartment bookshelf. The concept is probably best described as a roll-top desk on its side, and while the action does appear a little stiff, it scores extra points for how easy it looks to replicate.
Using a router, [Keith] cuts a channel into the top and bottom sheets of plywood, which the books will eventually ride in. This channel goes around the entire perimeter of the shelf, and its important to make it as straight as possible so nothing binds up. To make sure things move through as smoothly as possible, some sandpaper is used to clean-up the inside edges.
The next step is to rip some books apart and salvage their spines. Used books can be purchased for next to nothing at flea markets, so even if you dont have a home library filled with vintage tomes to eviscerate, it should be easy enough to get your hands on some if you want to build your own version. For sanitys...
Ahmad A., who killed one and injured six in a jihadi attack in a supermarket in Hamburg, Germany (Photo: Srdjan Suki-Pool/Getty Images)
An asylum seeker in Germany whose application was turned down admitted his deadly attack in a Hamburg supermarket was part of his radical Islamist ideology, Breitbart reported.
Ahmad A., as he is identified in the Germany court where his trial is ongoing, stabbed a 50-year-old man to death and injured six in July 2017 while yelling Allahu Akbar [God is greatest]! Even though the police had him under investigation for being an Islamist, they blamed his actions at the time on mental illness.
Yet Ahmad, who pleaded guilty to the all the charges against him, told the court the attack was part of his jihad and he was trying to kill as many Christians as possible. The German news outlet Hamburger Morgenpost reported his lawyer declared, He made this decision as a contribution to the global jihad.
At his trial, it was also revealed investigators found a homemade Islamic State flag in his room, a fact that had been previously withheld from the public.
Ahmad, a 26-year-old Palestinian who was born in the United Arab Emirates, claimed he came to Germany to study dentistry. He was not deported after his application was denied, even though the German government had the option to send him to Norway. However, since the relevant government agency did not file his paperwork in time, he was allowed to stay.
In most great heist movies, the actual theft comes toward the end of the film and is followed only by the reveal of how a plucky band of lovable rascals pulled it off and stole from an evil billionaire or corporation. First, however, the film shows in great detail how the crew is assembled and then prepares its big coup in the face of setbacks and obstacles.
Whats going on in Washington right now is a bit like that as Republicans are just a couple of steps away from pulling off the biggest heist in world history. The key difference is that they are actually trying to rob ordinary Americans so they can give the money to the rich and corporations. They are also not a plucky band of lovable rascals but either actual millionaires and billionaires or shills funded by them.
Republicans face a challenge that seems trickier than robbing the vault of a casino or stealing a priceless work of art from a heavily guarded museum. Their goal is to gut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, give that money to the rich and convince regular Americans that this is good for them.
Most of the plan is now in place. One of the last key pieces was the GOPs tax reform bill that passed late last year. This legislation might buy enough votes to allow Republicans to hold on to a majority in Congress in this years election.
Here is how: Taxpayers will see more money in their paychecks this year. However, while the tax cuts for corporations are permanent, those for regular taxpayers are not. In fact, down the road, the legislation will turn into a tax increase for more than half of Americans.
By providing corporations with a windfall, businesses can now more easily play their part in this charade. There has been a rash of announcements from large companies like AT&T, Bank of America, Comcast and American Airlines that they would pay their employees bonuses as a result of the tax bill getting passed.
While thats nice for these workers, they should ask themselves why they are getting a one-time bonus this year (i.e. an election year) instead of a nice raise that would put more money in their wallets each and every payday. After all, the corporate tax cuts are permanent.
And its not as though companies couldnt have done these things already. The economy has been solid for years now and many of them have booked record profits. So why give some of that money to their employees now merely in the form of temporary benefits?
One reason is so that President Donald Trump and the GOP can use this anecdotal evidence of bonuses as proof...
The Indian Express reports that a FIR (First Information Report) has been filed, and a criminal investigation has begun, against the newspaper and reporter who published a story about theft of data from Aadhaar, India's national identity system:
A deputy director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has registered an FIR against The Tribune newspaper and its reporter Rachna Khaira following her report on how anonymous sellers over WhatsApp were allegedly providing access to Aadhaar numbers for a fee. [Ed Note: The UIDAI has denied that any breach of the biometric database took place. See below.]
The FIR also names Anil Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Raj, all of whom were mentioned in The Tribune report as people Khaira contacted in the course of her reporting.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Alok Kumar confirmed that an FIR had been registered and an investigation launched. The FIR has been lodged with the Crime Branch's cyber cell under IPC Sections 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document), as well Section 66 of the IT Act and Section 36/37 of the Aadhaar Act.

LONDON (Reuters) Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage said on Sunday he was increasingly concerned that a vote for Britain to leave the European Union could be overturned by a powerful group of the blocs supporters.
In an interview with Britains Observer newspaper, Farage, former head of the euroskeptic UK Independence Party, said a well-organized and funded group of campaigners that wants to remain in the EU was drowning out those who want to leave.
The Remain side are making all the running, said Farage. They have a majority in parliament, and unless we get ourselves organized we could lose the historic victory that was Brexit.
Last week, Farage said he was warming to the idea of holding a second vote on Britains membership of the EU to settle the argument an idea written off by other Brexit campaigners who urged the government to press on with exit talks with the bloc.
In 2016, Britons voted 52 to 48 percent in favor of ending its membership of the EU. Prime Minister Theresa May has ruled out a second referendum, saying her government was seeking an amicable divorce with the EU which will safeguard the economy and enable Britain to secure trade deals with other countries.
But some Brexit campaigners fear her approach has led to the watering down of several of their demands, including the ability to reduce immigration and to reclaim sovereignty by leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.
Several pro-EU campaigners say the need for a second referendum...

New Delhi: Teen Murti Chowk in central Delhi was formally rechristened as Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu today.
The two leaders also laid a wreath and signed the visitors book at the memorial.
In the visitors book, Modi wrote that he saluted the great Indian traditions of selfless sacrifice and penance of Indian soldiers, who laid down their lives during the liberation of the city of Haifa and World War I.
One of these pages was written 100 years ago, in the sacrifice of Indian soldiers at Haifa. The sacrifice commemorated at Teen Murti observes its centenary. Naming this spot as Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk marks this historic occasion. In the presence of the prime minister of Israel, we pay homage to the brave soldiers, Modi wrote in the visitors book.
Netanyahu, who arrived on a six-day visit today, was received by Modi at the airport, setting aside protocol.
The three bronze statues at Teen Murti represent the Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers who were part of the 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade.

The directors of a new documentary about class stratification in Britains acting profession argue that class needs to be added back into the UK Equality Act.
In 2010, the then Home Secretary of the UKs new Conservative-Liberal Coalition government announced that she would be repealing part one of the Equality Act that had been passed in the last days of the Labour government. Her name? Theresa May. Part one of the Act mandated public authorities such as government ministers, departments, local borough councils, health authorities and others, to develop strategies designed to reduce the inequalities of outcome which result from socio-economic disadvantage.
Interestingly, socio-economic disadvantage was not seen as part of the protected characteristics listed in part two of the Equality Act. These characteristics were protected against discrimination and nine were identified: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
It is not hard to see why the question of socio-economic disadvantage was separated from the question of discrimination in the Act. How can a society structured around socio-economic inequalities admit that this amounts to discrimination against those crowded at the bottom end of the distribution of economic rewards? In a market-based society it simply cannot be illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of their economic resources. Still, the original provisions of part one, carefully contained as they were, was a potentially useful starting point in at least acknowledging the reality of socio-economic disadvantage and requiring the collection of relevant data that could feed into strategic decision-making to improve things.
It was of course too much for the incoming government of 2010, which was about to embark on an extensive austerity programme designed not only to make the poor poorer by cutting social benefits but to eradicate any positive representation of working class life and working c...

Maritime Self-Defense Force ships have been deployed to waters around the Korean Peninsula, even near the Northern Limit Line, since late last year to thwart North Korean attempts to evade international sanctions, government sources say.
Following a request from the U.S. military in December, MSDF ships have been stationed in areas including the Yellow Sea to monitor whether refined oil is being transferred from foreign ships to North Korean vessels in violation of U.N. sanctions imposed on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programs, the sources said Friday.
The government may report on that effort Tuesday at an international meeting of foreign ministers regarding North Korean issues in Vancouver, British Columbia.
According to the sources, the MSDF is following the standard rules for warning and surveillance activities for the mission. The main purpose is to monitor ship movements and collect information to share with the United States. The MSDF does not forcibly inspect ships, as it is not authorized to do so unless certain conditions are met under the Self-Defense Forces Law.
But the government believes the activities will put more pressure not only on North Korea, but also on China and Russia, which are allegedly economic enablers of North Koreas weapons development programs.
So far, the MSDF has sent vessels to areas where suspicious ships are found by its P-3C surveillance planes during daily patrols over the East China Sea and elsewhere.
In the Yellow Sea, to the west of the Korean Peninsula, the MSDF has sometimes sailed as far as the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between North and South Korea, the sources said.
The MSDF takes photos of suspicious ships and provides information to the U.S., which is leading global efforts to impose tough economic sanctions on North Korea, according to the sources.
Missions also take place in the Sea of Japan.
A senior MSDF official, however, admitted that it is not clear whether the efforts will yield substantial results in foiling oil smuggling.
We cannot forcibly investigate ships. They could leave the area and sail to a different location to meet (a North Korean ship) and transfer the items, the official said. The activities have significance in tightening the net around North Korea, but the actual effects remain uncertain.
The U.N. Security Council has imposed stepped-up sanctions against North Korea as it continues to test-fire missiles and carry out nuclear tests.
Last September, a council resolution prohibited the ships of U.N. memb...
Introduction GA: In the following book review Jay Knott suggests that Being in Time scores a very high mark on many fronts, however, the text fails to attack Muslims and Islam. In the last two decades I have been accused of many things but this is the first time I am criticised for 'not being an Islamophobe.' I have met Knott before and I think that regardless of the peculiar premise of this text, it deserves attention.
Book Review by Jay Knott
A review of Being In Time a post-political manifesto, Gilad Atzmon, Skyscraper Publications, 2017
There is just one point where I have encountered a difficulty Russell to Frege, 1902.
I introduced a talk by Gilad Atzmon, and organised a reading group to discuss his first book, The Wandering Who?, about Jewish identity politics. We had many criticisms of it.
The new book is much broader, and better. I have only one major criticism. This article is about that criticism, but though as a result its mostly negative, I actually think this book is a major contribution to understanding the times we live in. It explains Donald Trump, Brexit, the left, identity politics, political correctness, and especially, US support for Jewish supremacy in the Middle East. It is undogmatic, finding inputs from a wide range of sources. Atzmon even manages to get something useful out of the book The Bell Curve while rejecting its central premise, IQ. I mostly agreed with much of Being in Time.
But chapter four, United Against Unity, woke me up with a jolt.
But what about Hammed, a metal worker from Birmingham? Hammed identifies as a Muslim can he join a Left demonstration against the War in Syria? Its a good question and the answer is not immediately obvious because its no secret that many of those who subscribe to progressive and liberal ideologies and especially activists...

Dozens of headlines have claimed consequences ranging from system-destroying malware to prison sentences. Fortunately, most of them can be filed under tabloid nonsense.
That being said, there is an extremely important issue that deserves much closer attention, particularly given a shift in the UK legal climate during 2017. Were talking about live streaming copyrighted content on Facebook, which is both incredibly easy and frighteningly risky.
This week it was revealed that 34-year-old Craig Foster from the UK had been given an ultimatum from Sky to pay a 5,000 settlement fee. The media giant discovered that hed live-streamed the Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko fight on Facebook and wanted compensation to make a potential court case disappear.
While it may seem initially odd to use the word, Foster was lucky.
Under last years Digital Economy Act, he couldve been jailed for up to ten years for distributing copyright-infringing content to the public, if he had reason to believe that communicating the work to the public [would] cause loss to the owner of the copyright, or [would] expose the owner of the copyright to a risk of loss.
Clearly, as a purchaser of the 19.95 pay-per-view himself, he wouldve appreciated that the event costs money. With that in mind, a court would likely find that he would have been aware that Sky would have been exposed to a risk of loss. Sky claim that 4,250 people watched the stream but the way the law is written, no specific level of loss is required for a breach of the law.
But its not just the threat of a jail sentence thats the problem. People streaming live sports on Facebook are sitting ducks.
In Fosters case, the fight he streamed was watermarked, which means that Sky put a tracking code into it which identified him personally as the buyer of the event. When he (or his friend, as Foster claims) streamed it on Facebook, it was trivial for Sky to capture the watermark and track it back to his Sky account.
Equally, it would be simplicity itself to see that the name on the Sky account had exactly the same name and details as Fosters Facebook account. So, to most observers, it would appear that not only had Foster purc...

A San Diego man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegal possession of a firearms cache and body armor and making false statements to federal agents involving international terrorism.
Marchello Dsaun McCain, 35, a previously convicted felon (for assault with a firearm), provided assistance to others who had joined ISIS abroad, including his brother Douglas McCain.
Knowing that his brother intended to travel abroad to join ISIS, McCain deposited money in his wifes bank account, then let his brother use his wifes credit card to purchase plane tickets to Turkey, a known entry point to Syria for foreign fighters. He also let his brother make hotel reservations from the same credit card.
McCain regularly communicated with his brother and others regarding the financial and logistical needs of foreign fighters in Syria, at one point wiring $800 to an ISIS operative in Turkey to support his brother, among others. He also agreed to travel to Syria to join them.
In August of 2014, McCains brother became the first American known to have been killed fighting for ISIS in Syria.
The next January, McCain was arrested on the firearms charges. Eight months later, he pleaded guilty to lying to FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force agents about his assistance to and knowledge of individuals engaged in violent terrorist activities abroad.
ISIS has brought the war on terror closer to home by directing and inspiring attacks in the U.S. and other countries, thereby putting Americans lives in danger, said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman at McCains sentencing. By lying to federal agents, Marchello McCain delayed, frustrated and thwarted an investigation into a group that supplied U.S. and Canadian fighters to ISIS. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect American lives here and abroad.

Power outages set off IV bag shortages
13 January 2018
Hospitals nationwide are in the midst of one of the most severe medical product shortages in modern US history. With half of Puerto Rico still without power, the major medical supply giant on the islandBaxter Internationalhas been unable to keep up with the production of the millions of IV bags upon which hospitals throughout the US mainland rely on for basic daily medical treatment of their patients.
Erin Fox, director of the University of Utahs drug information service, told the Guardian Weve seen some pretty terrible shortages. This shortage proves that things can always get worse. It affects every single medication that we are giving in our hospital.
IV fluid bags are an essential part of modern medical care in hospitals, where they are used to dilute and administer medication.
This critical shortage has been exacerbated by a sharp increase in flu cases nationwide, sending patients to hospitals where they often require IV drip medications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that 46 states are experiencing widespread flu activity, comparable to the peak of the 2014-2015 season, which was the most severe flu season in recent years.
Since flu season usually peaks in January and February many medical professionals have expressed grave concern about how the shortages will be handled in the coming months. The flu kills anywhere from 2,000 to 56,000 Americans every year, and puts 140,000 to 710,000 people into the hospital, according to the CDC. Already this year 27 people under the age of 65 have died of the flu in California alone.
The shortages have had far-reaching effects, hitting surgery centers, cancer clinics that infuse chemotherapy, dialysis centers and companies that prov......

Neocons like William Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Pearl were the driving forces in pushing for the war in Iraq. They understood if they wanted to sell war, Americans needed to believe the conflict was about values, not interests. The neocons dusted off and put a new face on that old rationalization for colonialismthe white mans burden. Interventions were to bring democracy and freedom to those people who were struggling to be just like their more advanced models in the white West. Liberal interventionists further developed those ideas into humanitarian interventionism and the responsibility to protect.
Seven years after the Tunisian revolution one can dissect four main conflict issues in Tunisia today.
Thirty years last November Zine el Abidine Ben Ali assumed power in Tunisia ending thereby the rule of ailing Habib Bourguiba who ruled the country since its independence in 1956. Ben Ali promised political reforms that lured large segments of the Tunisian polity, including the Islamists. Those hopes were soon shattered by the brutal crackdown following the 1989 general elections in which Ennahda ran on independent lists, and came second after Ben Alis RCD party. Leftists were not spared either and by 2010 Ben Ali managed to unite most Tunisians against his authoritarian rule. Tunisians embarked on a political transition that has been underway seven years now.
Dubbed the Arab Springs exception, a number of explanations have been put forward by different analysts. There is the role of a vibrant civil society, high levels of education, the homogenous fabric of the Tunisian society, and the limited geostrategic interests. One important factor, however, is experiences of dialogue and coalition building among political and civil society actors of different worldviews, especially between secular leftists and Islamists. Those involved in the 18 October 2005 dialogue initiative rightly argue that the outcome of that experience facilitated reaching the agreement on which the 2012 Troika government was formed.
The international community hailed the 2014 constitution as unique in the Arab world
Political transitions following bottom up upheavals are very difficult to navigate in that they bring to the surface all the contradictions that were suppressed by the authoritarian regime. It was inevitab...
WASHINGTON (AP) With Russia in mind, the Trump administration is aiming to develop new nuclear firepower that it says will make it easier to deter threats to European allies.
The plan, not yet approved by President Donald Trump, is intended to make nuclear conflict less likely. Critics argue it would do the opposite.
The proposal is spelled out in a policy document, known officially as a nuclear posture review, that puts the U.S. in a generally more aggressive nuclear stance. It is the first review of its kind since 2010 and is among several studies of security strategy undertaken since Trump took office.
In many ways it reaffirms the nuclear policy of President Barack Obama, including his commitment to replace all key elements of the nuclear arsenal with new, more modern weapons over the coming two decades.
It says the U.S. will adhere to existing arms control agreements, while expressing doubt about prospects for any new such pacts. The Trump nuclear doctrine is expected to be published in early February, followed by a related policy on the role and development of U.S. defenses against ballistic missiles.
Where the Trump doctrine splits from Obamas approach is in ending his push to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in U.S. defense policy. Like Obama, Trump would consider using nuclear weapons only in extreme circumstances, while maintaining a degree of ambiguity about what that means. But Trump sees a fuller deterrent role for these weapons, as reflected in the plan to develop new capabilities to counter Russia in Europe.
The Huffington Post published online a draft of the nuclear policy report Thursday, and The Associated Press independently obtained a copy Friday. Asked for commen...
Most of us have either ordered a chai latte at a caf before, or at least a cup of tea. I, for one, always assumed that chai was just the Hindi word for tea, and that in the US this always meant tea with certain spices, versus normal tea being plain old green or black tea leaves. But instead of getting into semantics, I want to share some of the etymology behind the two words, tea and chai, that I learned from an article in Quartz by Nikhil Sonnad:
With a few minor exceptions, there are really only two ways to say tea in the world. One is like the English termt in Spanish and tee in Afrikaans are two examples. The other is some variation of cha, like chay in Hindi.
Both versions come from China. How they spread around the world offers a clear picture of how globalization worked before globalization was a term anybody used. The words that sound like cha spread across land, along the Silk Road. The tea-like phrasings spread over water, by Dutch traders bringing the novel leaves back to Europe.
The term cha () is Sinitic, meaning it is common to many varieties of Chinese. It began in China and made its way through central Asia, eventually becoming chay () in Persian. That is no doubt due to the trade routes of the Silk Road, along which, according to a recent discovery, tea was traded over 2,000 years ago. This form spread beyond Persia, becoming chay in Urdu, shay in Arabic, and chay in Russian, among others. It even it made its way to sub-Saharan Africa, where it became chai in Swahili. The Japanese and Korean terms for tea are also based on the Chinese cha, though those languages likely adopted the word even before its westward spread into Persian.
But that doesnt account for tea. The Chinese character for tea, , is pronounced differently by different varieties of Chinese, though it is written the same in them all. In todays Mandarin, it is ch. But in the Min Nan variety of Chinese, spoken in the coastal province of Fujian, the character is pronounced te. The key word here is coastal.......

Hawaii ballistic missile threat alert to phones was false alarm, officials say.
Hawaiians were thrown into a panic Saturday morning after an emergency alert was mistakenly sent, warning them to seek immediate shelter from a ballistic missile threat, and it took emergency officials 38 minutes to send a new alert to mobile phones that the threat was a false alarm.
Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator Vern Miyagi said at a press conference with the governor Saturday afternoon that a single individual sent out the alert by mistake. The individual went so far as to click through a second message, intended as a safeguard, that asked whether the alert should go out.
