Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States: Who Is Jose Babe Romualdez? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Nine months after threatening not to name a new ambassador to the United States, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sent media executive Jose Manuel Babe Romualdez to Washington. Initially tapped in October 2016, Romualdez declined after emergency surgery for a detached retina grounded him from flying. In February, Duterte threatened not to send an ambassador to the U.S.: In the US, we have no ambassador. No ambassador will go there I do not feel like sending one.

Nevertheless, on July 5, 2017, Duterte named Romualdez special envoy to President Donald Trump, and appointed him ambassador to the U.S. on July 27. Finally, on November 29, Romualdez presented his credentials to Trump. Romualdez is also concurrently accredited to Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago. He succeeds Jose Cuisia, Jr., who served in Washington from July 2011 to June 2016.

Born in 1948 and raised in Manila, Jose Manuel Babe del Gallego Romualdez is one of seven children born to Dr. Alberto Zialcita Romualdez, Sr., a secretary general of the World Medical Association, and Dr. Covadonga Ubante del Gallego, who chaired the Pathology Department at Manilas University of Santo Tomas Hospital. They were married in 1939. His nickname came about because he was the baby in the family for nine years before his brother was born.

Although his parents were not politicians, Babe Romualdez comes from a prominent Filipino political family. His uncle Daniel Romualdez, Jr., was House speaker from 1956 to 1962; grandfather Miguel was Mayor of Manila; and granduncle Norberto served as a justice on the Supreme Court. In addition, he is the nephew of former First Lady Imelda Marcos. Babe is the third Romualdez to serve as the Philippine ambassador to the United States. He follows in the footsteps of Eduardo Z. Romualdez, who served from October 1971 to June 1982, and Benjamin Romualdez, Imelda Marcoss younger brother, who served from July 1982 to March 1986, when the Marcos regime was overthrown.

Babe Romualdez earned a BS in Business Administration from De La Salle College in Manila in 1970. He started his career the same year as a TV newscaster for KBS-9 Manila, the Philippines first station to broadcast in color. He rose to become executive assistant to the stations chairman of the board, and eventually was president and vice chairman of the Board of the Television Corporation of the Philippines.

Along the way, Romualdez becam...

Choc at epicenter of Colombias social, environmental conflicts "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

NOANAM, Colombia One wet November morning deep within Colombias western rainforest of Choc, rebel fighters of the National Liberation Army (ELN) scattered across a muddy football pitch in groups of eight to practice their daily drills. The rebels drilled with sticks instead of guns to avoid getting them jammed with mud, and they wore slacks instead of uniforms. From a distance, it looked like a game of baseball, but the reality is that the fighters were training because war could be just around the corner again. A leading member of the Che Guevara fighting front who goes by the alias, Yerson, sat close by as his comrades finished the morning drill and blamed Colombias elite for the ongoing conflict. He wore military fatigues and a beret decorated with a red image of Che Guevara.. People see us guerrillas as antiquated, he said. But capitalism is older and well keep fighting injustice if we have to. Yerson was speaking about the insurgency his organization has waged against the Colombian state for five decades, and to the recent, unprecedented, ceasefire that was brokered with the government in October. (The ceasefire officially ended January 9, but it is still uncertain whether there will be a return to war or a continued show of restraint from the rebels and the armed forces.) In 1964, inspired by the Cuban Revolution, a group of radicalized students and peasants declared war against the government in the mountains of central Colombia. Their goal was to break the stranglehold of the conservative and liberal elite who controlled the political system, redistribute

Then, they brought in top digital fundraising experts and built a digital infrastructure second to none. So now, not only did the Hillary Clinton escapade leave the DNC bankrupt, but lagging way behind the RNC in their ability to raise vast sums through 2018. In fact, they are so far behind that they may never catch up. The RNC raised $130 million for itself in 2017, and Trump raised another $250 million, and he is expected to be able to double that output in 2018. Not only are the Dems not able to raise nearly as much money as the RNC, but they are currently buried under mountains of debt after years of financial mismanagement under the helm of Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz both of whom will be lucky if they dont end up in prison. Iran Arrests Former President for Sedition, 1969 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good morning, Im still reporting on: Iran Arrests Former President for Sedition, 1969 Synopsis: The Iranian authorities have just arrested their former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and confined him to house arrest to prevent him from re-igniting last weeks widespread protests against the Islamic theocracy. An Arabic newspaper published in the UK cited reliable sources in Tehran who quoted Ahmadinejad as saying about the recent protests: The people are angry at this government because of its monopoly on public wealth. Remember the airplane full of cash that President Obama sent to the Iranian Mullahs just before his departure from the presidency? Why did he send cash? So that it could disappear into the hands of his comrades in the Iranian power structure. Ahmadinejad is mad because he didnt get any of the stolen American loot. Hes been on the outs for some time. Last year, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei banned him from running for president a second time. Ahmadinejad also is quoted as saying: The government of Hassan Rouhani believes that they own the land and that the people are an ignorant society that does not know. What Iran suffers from today is mismanagement and not lack of economic resources. Support Our Sponsors: - Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. You Got a 3D Printer, Now What? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Given the incredibly low prices on some of the models currently on the market, its more than likely a number of Hackaday readers have come out of the holiday season with a shiny new desktop 3D printer. Its even possible some of you have already made the realization that 3D printing is a bit harder than you imagined. Sure the newer generation of 3D printers make it easier than ever, but its still not the same click and forget experience of printing on paper, for instance.

In light of this, I thought it might be nice to start off the new year with some advice for those whove suddenly found themselves lost in a forest of PLA. Some of this information may seem obvious to those of us whove spent years huddled over a print bed, but as with many technical pursuits, we tend to take for granted the knowledge gained from experience. For my own part, the challenges I faced years ago with my first wooden 3D printer were wholly different than what I imagined. I assumed that the real challenge would be getting the machine assembled and running, but the time it took to build the machine was nothing in comparison to the hours and hours of trial and error it took before I gained the confidence to really utilize the technology.

Of course, everyones experience is bound to be different, and wed love to hear about yours in the comments. Grand successes, crushing defeats, and everything in between. Its all part of the learning process, and all valuable information for those who are just starting out.

China Quietly Orders Closing of Bitcoin Mining Operations Some people have already moved their hardware out of China. "IndyWatch Feed War"

Move tightens a clampdown that already has shut exchanges for trading of cryptocurrencies in China

Jan. 10, 2018 9:20 a.m. ET

BEIJINGBitcoin cant catch a break in China.

Chinese authorities ordered the closing of operations that create a large share of the worlds supply of bitcoin, tightening a clampdown that has already shuttered exchanges for the trading of cryptocurrencies in China.

A multiagency government task force overseeing risks in Internet finance issued a notice last week ordering local authorities to guide the shutdown of operations that produce, or mine, cryptocurrencies, according to the notice and people familiar with the information.

While the notice called for an orderly exit without setting a deadline, far-flung areas of China where cryptocurrency mining operations have flourished are complying. A local regulatory official in the far western region Xinjiang said Wednesday that his agency received the notice and is doing what the country wants.

The central bank, the lead agency in the task force on Internet financial risk that issued the notice, didnt respond to a request for comment.

Portrait of the quail. This rather characterless and legless portrait shows the correct tawny colour of the quail but is the wrong shape. The quail has a plump body and minimal tail.

Text Translation:

Of the quail Quails are so called from their call; the Greeks call them ortigie because they were first seen on the island of Ortigia. Quails have fixed times of migration. For when summer gives way to winter, they cross the sea. The leader of the flock is called ortigometra, the quail-mother. The hawk, seeing the quail-mother approaching land, seizes it; because of this, the quails all take care to attract a leader from another species, through whom they guard against this early danger. Their favorite food is the seed of poisonous plants. For this reason, the ancients forbade them to be eaten; for alone among living things, the quail suffers, like man, from the falling sickness.

Quails have fixed times of migration. For when summer gives way to winter, they cross the sea. The heat of summer is the warmth of love. The cold of winter is the temptation of the lethargic mind. From love of his neighbour, therefore, the righteous man crosses the sea of this world to love of God, that he mat stay forever in a warm land, burning continually with the heat of love within, in order to avoid the cold of winter, namely, the storms and winds of unexpected temptation. The leader of the flock is called the quail-mother. The hawk, seeing it approaching land, seizes it. The land represents earthly longings; the sea, the dangers of the world. The hawk, lying in wait, is the Devil, who tempts us by suggestion. Seeing the quail-mother approaching land, therefore, the hawk seizes it, as the Devil drags off with him those who seek earthly things.

Let the churchman, therefore, who heads his flock, take careful heed of his purpose in seeking earthly things, whether he acquires them for his own use or seeks them to meet the need of his brothers, lest the hawk, that is, the Devil, should seize him, if he has neglected the things of the spirit and has not ceased to long for the things of this earth. Because of this, the quails all take care to attract a leader of another species, through whom they guard against this early danger. There a...

A Myanmar court on Wednesday accepted charges against two journalists under the Official Secrets Act, their lawyer said.

Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo (pictured above), 27, work for the international news organization Reuters. They were arrested on December 12 in Yangon for allegedly possessing important secret papers related to the ongoing crisis in Rakhine state, which they say they acquired from two policemen.

The journalists had been reporting on the military crackdown in the northern Rakhine state, which has prompted about 655,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to bordering Bangladesh and claimed around 6,700 lives since August.

One United Nations official said that the campaign seemed to be a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

A district judge told the court that a police officer had filed the case to charge under the state secret [Official Secrets] act, section 3.1(c).

We will face the charges filed against us, Wa Lone told reporters as he and Kyaw Soe Oo were led out of the court to return to Yangons Insein prison following their 30-minute hearing.

Huawei is Releasing a Mate 10 Lite Edition "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro were released few months ago and are here to complete with the big guns, but a lot of smartphone users, especially young consumers, dont really care about AI processors and powerful processors, but rather want a solid and fast smartphone that helps them capture awesome pictures and use seamlessly social media and gamings apps. According to recent studies, were increasingly spending more time on smartphones every year, with last years average hours spent exceeding 4 hours, out of which at least 2 hours are spent on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat & Whatsapp.

This being said, coming up with a Mate 10 Lite edition is the right thing to do as long as this less-expensive and less-premium lite companion lives up to users expectations, and manage a similar feature in the mid-range category as the Mate 10 pro did in the flagships category.

I had the chance to test out the Mate 10 lite for a couple of weeks and while it has little in common with the Mate series in general, it turned out to be a quite interesting and decent smartphone.

In terms of specs the Mate 10 lite has everything you require in a smartphone and even more:

Memory: 4 GB operating memory (RAM) and 64 GB internal storage (ROM)
Storage card type: microSD (TF)
Maximum expanded storage capacity: 256 GB
CPU/Cores: Kirin 659/octa-core
Battery capacity: 3340 mAh (typical value)
Charger: micro USB port, compatible with standard 5 V 2 A chargers
SIM card system: dual card dual standby, nano SIMs
Sensors: fingerprint sensor, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, compass, and gravity sensor

The Mate 10 Lites best features are easily its excellent screen to body ratio with a 18:9 5.9-inch display and the TWO cameras in each direction, two dual cameras (16-megapixel and 2-megapixel) in the rear and two dual cameras (13-megapixel and 2-megapixel) in the front with a Selfie Toning Flash.

Hasbara 2018: Israel using secretive group to create online propaganda to challenge its negative image and boycott campaign "IndyWatch Feed World"

Israel has created a secretive body made up of ex-generals and a former UN ambassador to engage in an online propaganda campaign against the state's opponents internationally. The Strategic Affairs Ministry created the corporation to carry out "mass awareness activities" to counteract what it describes as "the delegitimization campaign" against Israel internationally, Haaretz reports. The group, named Kella Shlomo, received $37 million from the Netanyahu government, and reportedly expects to raise the same amount through international donors, from "philanthropic sources" and "pro-Israel organizations." According to a government resolution report obtained by the media watchdog Seventh Eye, the funding is to "implement part of the ministry's activities related to the struggle against the phenomena of delegitimization and boycotts against the State of Israel."

From VOA: US Congressional Report Details Extensive Russian Influence Campaigns January 10, 2018 7:15 AM, by Michael Bowman

British PM faces pressure over healthcare crisis third-world conditions "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP

AFP/File | Healthcare crisis at her door? Britains Theresa May came under fire in parliament over severe delays in patient treatment at the state-run National Health Service (NHS)

LONDON (AFP)

A healthcare crisis put British Prime Minister Theresa May on the defensive at her first weekly parliamentary questions of 2018 on Wednesday following a report about cuts in cancer care.

The questions followed a report in Wednesdays edition of The Times which said a leading hospital was delaying the start of chemotherapy for patients due to a 40-percent shortfall of nurses in the relevant medical unit.

Andrew Weaver, head of chemotherapy at Churchill Hospital in Oxford, is also reportedly considering reducing the number of treatment cycles used to alleviate symptoms, rather than cure patients, due to staff shortages.

The hospital has denied any change in policy.

May dismissed the report but apologised for the postponement of tens of thousands of operations over January due to a surge in demand at the state-run National Health Service during the winter period.

I fully accept that the NHS is under pressure over winter I apologise to those people who have had their operations delayed, May said after a barrage of questions from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The reality in our NHS is that we are seeing 2.9 million more people now going to accident and emergency, over two million more operations taking place each year, she said.

Corbyn also mocked May over reports that she had intended to sack Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt but was too weak to do so in a cabinet reshuffle earlier this week.

NHS staffing levels have been in crisis for months.

There are 40,000 vacant nurse posts in England, according to the Royal College of Nursing, but the numbers applying to study the subject are also falling.

According to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, 27 percent more nurses and midwives left the job between 2016 and 2017 than joined.

Numerous doctors have taken to social media in recent weeks to apologise to patients, with one emergency doctor in central England warning of third-world conditions.

NHS England last week recommended all hospitals defer non-urgent appointments and operations until the end of the month, except for cancer operations and...

Trump urges lawmakers to find bipartisan solution to border security reform "IndyWatch Feed World"

President Donald Trump is urging lawmakers to find a bipartisan solution to the so-called Dreamers and border security in "a bill of love." However, as midterm elections loom, negotiations on immigration are heating up. "I'll take all the heat you want. But you are not that far away from a comprehensive immigration reform," Trump said during a televised meeting with lawmakers of both parties on Tuesday. Trump met with a group of 20 members of Congress seeking a solution to avoid a government shutdown by passing the next spending bill by January 19. Ditching the shutdown is essential for Republicans to show their strength, while Democrats come under pressure from their base to pass a legislative fix to the impending end of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Last year, Trump ended the DACA program, which shielded more than 700,000 illegal immigrants who arrived as children from deportation and gave them the right to work legally. Trump has given Congress until March to codify a permanent protection status.

US Police Kill A Thousand Each Year While Cops Are Safer than Trash Collectors "IndyWatch Feed World"

WASHINGTON The Washington Post reported that 2017 saw close to a thousand people killed by law enforcement in the U.S. 987 people in total, an increase of 16 over the number killed in 2016. According to the Post which has been tracking police killings since 2015, a project it began after the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri:

National scrutiny of shootings by police began after an unarmed black teenager from a suburb of St. Louis was fatally shot by a white police officer in August 2014. The death of 18-year-old Michael Brown sparked widespread protests, prompted a White House commission to call for reforms, galvanized the Black Lives Matter movement and led many police agencies across the nation to examine their use of deadly force.

It is the third year in a row that the number of people killed by police in the U.S. has hovered around one thousand. Apologists for law enforcement say that the high number of police shootings has to do with law enforcements confronting dangerous individuals, stressing the life-and-death situation that officers face. What is not talked about as much, however, is that the number of police officers killed in the U.S. has actually been declining. 2017 saw the lowest number in close to 50 years.

China seen using its muscle and money to push states to withdraw South China Sea claims Other countries might give in like Philippines did "IndyWatch Feed War"

Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) January 10, 2018 3:25pm

MANILA, Philippines  Beijing might keep other claimant states away from the South China Sea as it seeks greater control over the region in the long run, maritime security analysts said.

Experts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies said China may have a different goal than when they first started their island-building activities in the South China Sea a few years back.

We see a much more confident China now than we did just five years ago My guess is that China wants greater control in the South China Sea, I dont think thats surprised anyone, CSIS expert Zack Cooper said in a podcast hosted by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative.

Cooper, however, said China might try to exclude other countries from conducting freedom of navigation and overflight in the region as that would pose a threat to Beijings trade in the region.

Over the long term, Beijing might use its artificial islands, which have been installed with military facilities, in the Spratlys and Paracels to press other countries out of the region.

I wouldnt be shocked at all if we see China trying to stop fishing in portions of the South China Sea or pushing other claimants off of their claims in the region I think we have to expect that if China grows stronger that is quite likely to have much more expansive aims that it has now, Cooper said.

China will expect countries to advance its interests

Agreeing with Cooper, CSIS expert Bonnie Glaser said that Chinas policies will be driven by their capabilities and how other countries see them.

The Chinese, I think, want every country in the region to avoid taking steps that would take Chinese interests and maybe in the future that will progress to a point where China will expect countries to implement some policies in order to help, expand and advance Chinese interests, Glaser said in the podcast.

Glaser also expressed concern over the remarks of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the National Congress of the Communist Party of China last October, where he highlighted th...

Federal agents raided twenty birth hotels on Tuesday night in the Los Angeles area.

The plush complexes double as maternity hotels for pregnant Chinese women who come to the US to give birth to their anchor babies.

Chinese women pay from $40,000 to $80,000 to come to the US to deliver their anchor babies.
Its an industry.

Chinese listing sites show several hundred maternity hotels in Southern California. Its not clear how many of the listings are active.

NBC reported:

Southern California apartment complexes that doubled as maternity hotels for Chinese women who want made-in-America babies were raided early Tuesday, capping an unprecedented federal sting operation, officials said.

NBC News was on the scene as Homeland Security agents swept into The Carlyle, a luxury property in Irvine, California, which housed pregnant women and new moms who allegedly forked over $40,000 to $80,000 to give birth in the United States.

I am doing this for the education of the next generation, one of the women told NBC News.

None of the women were arrested; they are being treated as material witnesses, and paramedics were on hand in case any of them went into labor during the sweep

All told, the feds raided 20 locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties, targeting three competing birth tourism schemes, officials said. The suspected operators have not been charged but are being questioned.

Protests Erupt in Cities across Tunisia "IndyWatch Feed War"

Summary

Tunisia is once being enveloped in anti-government protests, and the economic issues fueling them havent changed much since 2010.

Tunisias Mohamed Bouazizi inadvertently gave rise to the Arab Spring just over seven years ago when he set himself on fire to protest corrupt policemen confiscating his fruit cart. After the subsequent upheaval and overthrow of long-serving president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia made great strides in the political sphere, holding free and fair parliamentary elections in 2011 and adopting a new constitution in 2014. Yet economic relief has remained elusive for the countrys long-suffering citizens, and recent attempts by the government to impose austerity measures have been the spark that can reignite popular discontent.

Two kosher stores were torched in France on the anniversary of an Islamist terror attack at another kosher store.

Both stores had swatiskas painted on them two weeks ago. The suspected arson attack completely destroyed the Promo & Destock store, gutting its interior. The second store was partially burned as the fire did not take hold as well.

The fires were in Creteil, a southern suburb of Paris, where Jews are frequently targeted.

Ironically, the owner of Promo & Destock is a Muslim, which, according to the French National Bureau of Vigilance against anti-Semitism, was the reason the store was torched.

AFP quoted the owner of the store as saying, Im just disgusted, before he was taken to the hospital for feeling faint after seeing the extent of the damage.

The fires occurred on the third anniversary of the Islamist terror attack on the Hyper Cacher kosher market in Porte de Vincennes, another suburb of Paris. In that attack, four people were killed and numerous hostages were taken by Amedy Coulibaly, who had pledged allegiance to ISIS. Earlier that day, Coulibaly killed a French policewoman.

Palace Coup: Claims that Trump's 'mentally unfit' signal another impeachment option "IndyWatch Feed World"

Almost a year of "Russia-gate scandal" alleging collusion between President Trump and the Kremlin has produced nothing in the way of pressuring his resignation from the White House. No doubt, that's simply because there is no substance to this "scandal". However, the failure to bring Trump down through Russia-gate by his domestic political enemies, may have found a new lever in the form of salacious questions over the president's mental state. Trump is due to take a medical examination later this week, and that appointment is fueling media speculation that the doctors may find evidence of the president's alleged psychiatric deterioration. The media speculation over Trump's mental state has exploded after publication of the tell-all book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, by Michael Wolff. Days after going on sale, the book has already become a best-seller. In it, Wolff quotes senior White House staff and aides, and even Trump family members, whom he says all attest that the president is suffering from mental ill-health.

Good Grief! Billionaire Tom Steyer thinks hand-delivering 'Fire & Fury' to Congress will lead to Trump impeachment "IndyWatch Feed World"

Billionaire liberal financier Tom Steyer hopes hand-delivering 535 copies to Congress of a recently published book trashing the Trump administration will help bolster a fledgling push to impeach President Donald Trump. Steyer, a former hedge fund manager and Democratic moneyman, bought hundreds of copies of a book about the Trump presidency called "Fire and Fury,"and plans to give them to members of Congress. The ploy is part of an internet and TV ad campaign the wealthy Californian concocted in October to impeach Trump. "We believed when we started this impeachment petition on Oct. 20, we felt every subsequent day would bring information that would bolster our argument that this was a dangerous, unfit president who needed to be removed from office," Steyer told local reporters Saturday in California. He believes that the book's author, Michael Wolff, lays out a compelling case for why Trump must be ousted.

France turns to China for lucrative trade deals "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

French President Emmanuel Macron, left, is trying to position France as a major trading partner from Europe for China [PPIO]

With the UK less likely to back out from Brexit, France has decided to cement its trade ties with China.

French President Emmanuel Macron took a heavyweight team of business leaders and trade experts on his three-day trip to Beijing Monday.

Macron has been looking to sign billions of dollars in trade links with China, thereby making France one of the biggest trading partners in Europe.

But like many Western countries, France has a trade deficit with China to the tune of around $35 billion.

Macron delivered some friendly advice to China during the second day of his trip.

We have an access to markets which is unbalanced, unsatisfying, said Macron.

If we dont deal with this responsibly, the first, natural, reaction will be to close up on both sides.

Macron, who is the first foreign head of state to visit China this year, is nonetheless trying to woo China on environmental cooperation now that Beijing stands as the world leader in green efforts since the US pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords.

He also wants China to invest more in France.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his French counterpart on Monday that their countries bilateral ties stand at a new starting point.

China stands ready to promote exchanges and enhance mutual trust and cooperation with France in order to inject new impetus into the development of the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi emphasized that the two countries should give full play to the political leading role of the head of state diplomacy, and promote communication between governments, legislative organs, political parties, and the military of the two countries.

On Tuesday, Xi and Macron met at Beijings Great Hall of the People, and oversaw the signing of bilateral agreements, including the framework deals for Airbus to sell 100 aircraft to China.

Paris-based Areva, a global conglomerate in nuclear power and renewable energy, has also signed an $12 billion MoU for a Chinese nuclear reprocessing plant.

Electrum patches a critical flaw that exposed Bitcoin Wallets to hack since 2016 "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The development team behind the popular Electrum Bitcoin wallet app has issued an emergency patch for a critical vulnerability in the company bitcoin wallets.

Electrum is a free application thats used by many cryptocurrency sites to store bitcoin. Administrators can run their own Electrum server and the software supports hardware wallets such as Trezor, Ledger and Keepkey.

The development team behind the popular Electrum Bitcoin wallet app has issued an emergency patch for a critical vulnerability in the company bitcoin wallets.

The vulnerability allowed any website hosting the Electrum wallet to potentially steal the users cryptocurrency.

The flaw seems to be present in the software for almost two years, it is related to the exposure of passwords in the JSONRPC interface.

The company first issued a security patch failed to address the issue, but it failed, then Electrum opted out to issue a second update on Sunday evening.

The story has begun in November when many researchers observed numerous massive scans going on for Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets in order to steal their funds.

The security expert Didier Stevens observed a significant scanning activity over the weekend, just two days before Bitcoin price jumped from $7,000 to over $8,000.

The researcher observed a huge number of requests to his honeypot to retrieve Bitcoin wallet files.

Of course, the crooks were exploring the possibility to target also other cryptocurrencies, such as the Ethereum. Very interesting the analysis proposed by Bleepingcomputer.com that reported the discovery made by the researcher Dimitrios Slamaris.

The security expert reported Internet wide Ethereum JSON-RPC scans.

The Ugly Racist Fake President Who Wants To Deport People Of Color "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Neither Will Hurd (R-TX) nor Pete Aguilar (New Dem-CA) are very popular in their districts and, frankly, neither deserves reelection. A Democrat is likely to beat Hurd, although the DCCC and the Castro Machine have its fingers on the scale for a worthless Blue Dog in South Texas. And it will take some time before a progressive is in position to primary Aguilar in the Inland Empire. Theyre both useless back-benchers from overwhelmingly Hispanic districts and this week they co-sponsored a DACA compromise-- a discussion draft ahead of Trumps January 19 deadline. On Monday, CNN reported that the bill would offer qualifying individuals the ability to get in line for a green card and eventual citizenship after years of conditional residency, provided they meet certain requirements, including a background check and work, education or military service requirements. The bill doesn't make explicit reference to sponsoring relatives, but the bill summary notes that existing law would prohibit parents of these individuals who came to the US illegally to apply for a visa to come back without returning to their home country for at least 10 years before applying and the bill does nothing to erase that requirement. That addresses chain migration, or family-based migration, that Trump says he wants to cut.

Hard to imagine a Democrat would sign onto this Republican perspective? Remember-- Peter Aguilar comes from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party. Nor was he even a Democrat before the DCCC pushed him into the seat he now occupies.

Meanwhile, also on Monday, the Trump Regime set the field for deporting 200,000 El Salvadoran residents.
The Trump administration said Monday it is ending special protections for Salvadoran immigrants, an action that could force nearly 200,000 to leave the U.S. by September 2019 or face deportation.

Restoration Of Net Neutrality Rules Hits Key Milestone In Senate "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Markey's bill likely won't restore the net neutrality rules in the end, even if it passes in the Senate. Forcing a vote will be more difficult in the House, where Republicans hold a larger majority. Even if the bill passes both the Senate and House, President Trump is likely to issue a veto in order to let the FCC's net neutrality repeal go forward. Still, Markey's resolution could pass in the Senate if all Democrats and two Republicans vote in favor of it. A vote would keep net neutrality in the spotlight as Democrats prepare to make the repeal a campaign issue in the November elections. Democrats haven't said when they will try to force a vote on Markey's resolution, but US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has promised to make it happen. Last month, noting that legislation to reverse the repeal "doesn't need the support of the majority leader," Schumer said, "there will be a vote."

Letters from a Heartbroken Pervert: Youth "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

This is a guest post by Nameless Writer, the first in a series.

I lost my virginity a few months before my seventeenth birthday. The three years building up to that were, in many ways, a haze of desire and desperation. Women will probably never be able to fully wrap their heads around it, but a mans horniness at that age is truly dizzying. Here are a few examples of what that state of mind is like.

One night I dug through my houses recycling bin in search of a bottle with a neck that my dick could fit in. I didnt care if it was plastic or glass; I just desperately wanted something different than my hand. I grabbed a few promising vessels and brought them all to my room to try out. None of them were an appropriate size. This was almost certainly a blessing in disguise, since even if my dick had managed to get into one, theres no telling if it would have been able to get out.

When girls in middle school would yawn, I would stare straight into their mouths. It felt like a little glimpse into a blowjob. It was great because you get a bad reputation for staring at tits or making creepy comments, but no one knows about the perverted preview of a yawn.

I also used to ask girls of my acquaintance to hit me. I looked up online how to hit erotically and safely (above the jawline, below the cheek bone, aim for the fleshy middle and steer clear of ears) and started teaching the willing all about it. In a way, it was innocent. The girls were intrigued, and I never followed up the slap with any other proposal. That may have been a mistake, but at the time it seemed appropriate. Though Im not a big fan of slapping generally, and when I am I tend to prefer it moving in the other direction, at the time this was great. Girls were touching me! Touching me because I asked them to! I would always make eye contact with them as they did it. Their faces always showed a mix of curiosity, intrigue, and maybe even a bit of flirtation. They tended to giggle after making contact and then ask if I was okay. I always said yes and asked for another. I would masturbate to the memory later, straining my brain to recall the precise sensation of the sting of each slap. It wasnt much, but it was an improvement on masturbating just to the recollection of what a girl looked like that day.

It's important to bring awareness to this topic however until we deal with deeper aspects on the consciousness level, we can't truly makes the changes necessary to effect a permanent shift in removal and healing.

I was amazed at how many of you messaged me or commented on your own experiences and your need to understand this in more depth. This not only told me that the information needed to get out, but more importantly that many of you are actively seeking to remove the parasitic entities from our planetary consciousness. Lepers beg Jesus that they be healed

Reading 1 1 SM 4:1-11

The Philistines gathered for an attack on Israel.
Israel went out to engage them in battle and camped at Ebenezer,
while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
The Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel.
After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines,
who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield.
When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said,
Why has the LORD permitted us to be defeated today
by the Philistines?
Let us fetch the ark of the LORD from Shiloh
that it may go into battle among us
and save us from the grasp of our enemies. So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there
the ark of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim.
The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God.
When the ark of the LORD arrived in the camp,
all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded.
The Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked,
What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?
On learning that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp,
the Philistines were frightened.
They said, Gods have come to their camp.
They said also, Woe to us! This has never happened before. Woe to us!
Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods?
These are the gods that struck the Egyptians
with various plagues and with pestilence.
Take courage and be manly, Philistines;
otherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews,
as they were your slaves.
So fight manfully!
The Philistines fought and Israel was defeated;
every man fled to his own tent.
It was a disastrous defeat,
in which Israel lost thirty...

Israel Fast-Tracks Expulsions Of Palestinian Communities "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Israel forcibly displaced more than 650 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank in 2017 by demolishing their homes. In total, occupation forces destroyed 400 structures in the West Bank, according to UN figures. More than 100 of the demolished structures had been funded by international donors. Another 12,500 are under threat from pending Israeli demolitions orders. Israel systematically denies Palestinians under military occupation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, permission to build on their own land. Much of its destruction has targeted communities in Area C, the roughly 60 percent of the West Bank that remains under full Israeli military control under the terms of the Oslo accords signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization in the early 1990s.

Basking in Trump Support, Israel Shuts Its Gates to Refugees and Disagreeable Jews Alike "IndyWatch Feed World"

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL Though the Israeli government is enjoying a time of nearly unprecedented cooperation with the current U.S. president and his administration, several recent stories have derailed its carefully honed image of a homeland for the Jewish people regardless of race, national origin or political persuasion.

Israel has long been a country that prides itself on welcoming all Jews and offering support to all refugees in conscience of the Jews own plight during the Second World War. But a series of damaging stories have shown the current government taking a hard turn against Israels heritage as such a haven.

First, Israel ordered the deportation last Tuesday of thousands of African migrants who have been termed infiltrators, not immigrants, by Israels Population and Immigration Authority. Based on concerns repeatedly voiced by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, a major motivator for the edict was the fear that the unchecked influx of African migrants could present a threat to Israels social fabric and Jewish character.  Seemingly ignored is the fact that such an influx is now all but impossible, given the massive border wall Israel has constructed along its border with Egypt.

An Israeli government minister, speaking to this effect, called the migrants a cancer. Similar statements have been made of Israels Arab population, including Jewish Arabs.

The majority of the estimated 38,000 migrants are from Eritrea and Sudan, where they have fled war and persecution, and clearly meet the legal definition of a refugee according to the 1951 Refugee Convention, an agreement that Israel not only signed but reportedly helped to draft.

However, Israel has managed to avoid its legal obligations by leaving asylum requests unanswered, preventing the migrants from being recognized as refugees. Since 2015, Israel has granted only eight Eritreans and two Sudanese asylum from amongst tens of thousands of applications.

Unstable Yale Psychiatrist Who Labeled Trump Unstable Recants Armchair Diagnosis "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Anti-Trump Yale professor Dr. Bandy Lee told reporters she wants to physically constrain President Trump, evaluate him in constraints and then frogmarch him from office.

Dr. Lee is worried though that it might come off looking like a like a coup!

Dr. Lee met with more than a dozen lawmakers last month to discuss President Donald Trumps mental health.

But this week Dr. Lee recanted her diagnosis of President Trump.
Breitbart.com reported:

Appearing on Midday Live with Dr. Drew and Mike Catherwood on TalkRadio 790 KABC in Los Angeles, Dr. Lee was forced to admit that other presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, also had psychological profiles that would be concerning to her. She then allowed that she was not talking about mental illness when it came to President Trump.

Dr. Drew noted that it would be impossible for anyone to last through the presidency based on the standard Dr. Lee seemed to be applying.

As Dr. Drew pointed out several former presidents had mental health issues and were not removed from office.

John Adams and Teddy Roosevelt suffered from bipolar disorder. President Lincoln suffered from serious bouts of depression.

And Barack Obama negotiated with the Iranian mullahs!

At least 18 former presidents suffered from some type of mental illness.

BATR: Small Business Tax Reform "IndyWatch Feed World"

Small Business Tax Reform

One aspect of the Republican Tax Reform that everyone can agree upon is that it is not perfect. Fox business reports in What tax reform really means for small businesses.

"Instead of lowering the tax rate on all pass-through businesses, the final bill allows pass-throughs to deduct up to 20% of income. But who can deduct how much depends on what type of business you run and a corresponding formula".

Stop right there. It should be entirely clear that the political realities and influence of corporate lobbyists supersede that of ordinary businesses.

Ken Berry, J.D. reports that the 2018 Tax Reform Law has Benefits for Some Small Businesses. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in general, revised rules for businesses take effect in 2018 and are permanent, unlike most changes for individuals. The topics he list are: Corporate taxation, Section 179 deductions, Bonus depreciation, Luxury car deductions, Pass-through entities and Other deductions and credits.

Now before you zone out on such a pedantic examination, consider that a restrain redress for optimum small business treatment is a fundamental mistake. Fact Finders reports that hires for corporate positions fall short of that for small business. "According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy, small businesses have generated 64% of net new jobs over the past 15 years. The SBA considers companies with less than 500 employees to be small businesses, which encompasses 99.7% of all businesses that have employees in the U.S. under that umbrella term."

If the Trump forecast is correct and that Corporations will re-patriot trillions of dollars back into the U.S. and invest in growing their businesses domestically, one might overlook some of the disparities that favor the transnational firms. However, anyone who has ever aspired to climb the economic ladder of success knows that owning your own venture is more realistic than getting on the ground level with stock options of a startup which may never go public.

Off to the Races: Maryland General Assembly 2018 Begins "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Its an election year, and everyone knows it. For the next 90-days, the Maryland General Assembly will be in session and, if the lead-up has been any indication, its set for fireworks.

There are a few big issues that are going to have to be addressed by Marylands leaders: the House of Delegates, the State Senate, and the Governor. However, the issues that make for the biggest political fights are ones that no one is fully prepared for coming into Session.

In addition to the fact that every member of the General Assembly, and the Governor, will face the voters of the State on November 6, you can expect several vicious fights that will be decided far soonerin the June 26 primary. All of the lawmakers in Annapolis for the next three months understand that they are under scrutiny from the voters, the press, and from potential primary contenders who, unlike the lawmakers, arent prohibited from fundraising during the 90 day Session.

So, whats really at stake here? The national dialogue eats up a lot of the news time, even locally, so much of the drama and intrigue leading up to this years Session may have slipped by the average voter. First, lets remember that a lot of whats going on is politics. Democrats control a super-majority in both houses of the General Assembly. They would like nothing more than to deny Larry Hogan the opportunity to be the first Republican Governor of Maryland to be re-elected since the 1950s.

However, Democrats have their own problems. Though Maryland is a solidly blue state, there are both geographic and demographic divides that strain relations and political power in Annapolis. The biggest of these is the desire of some to adopt a leftward shift in politics thats opposed to the moderate Democrat model that has held firm control on the Maryland Party for decades. Younger, progressive leaders see the old guard as embodiments of establishment and corruption while the seasoned politicians see the upstarts as not understanding that the majority of Marylanders are not keen on embracing far-left politics.

With this backdrop, lets take a look at a few of the issues facing Annapolis this Session:

Arab League to hold meeting on Jerusalem next month "IndyWatch Feed War"

Six Arab foreign ministers who met in Amman last week said Arab states would embark on a diplomatic drive to persuade the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on territory captured by Israel in the 1967 war.

Arab foreign ministers said in an emergency meeting held following Trumps decision on December 6 that the move would spur violence throughout the region. They described Trumps announcement as a dangerous violation of international law which had no legal impact.

In recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy, imperiling Middle East peace efforts and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.

The status of Jerusalem home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions is one of the biggest obstacles to reaching a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

One amusing fact for you all: when Ed Brayton and I were putting together this little network were on, we were trying to figure out what name to give it. I was all for something in-your-face, with atheism front and center and some kind of impudent logo. Ed advocated for something a bit moreopen and friendly, and came up with Freethoughtblogs, emphasizing freedom from dogma rather than loud atheism. Oh, man, he was right. It would be awkward if this were Atheismblogs right now.

Congressional ethics disclosures should include cryptocurrencies like bitcoin "IndyWatch Feed World"

(Sunlight) Cryptocurrencies like bitcoins should be treated as assets and disclosed, like stocks, bonds and derivatives. Whether a Member of Congress has bitcoins is relevant to public understanding of where that persons interests may lie, as is true of other assets, from stocks to bonds to real estate.

Thats why rules are in place across the United States and in open parliaments around the world to ensure that representatives in national and state legislatures file regular reports on stocks, bonds and derivatives. These filings enable internal and external ethics watchdogs to detect and address insider trading and financial conflicts of interests, both of which have been problematic issues around the world.

Walter Shaub, director of the ethics practice at Campaign Legal Center, and Jim Harper, a executive vice president at the Competitive Enterprise institute, both suggested to Bloomberg, that bitcoin should be classified as an asset.

We agree. In 2018, however, as Bloomberg reports, bitcoin falls into a gray area for disclosure rules in DC.

That will change. In the years ahead we can and should expect cryptocurrencies to be included in sunshine laws. Were glad to see some Members of Congress are already on the right side of history.

The Stock Act was written so the public could trust that members of Congress werent personally profiting from the office they hold, Slaughter, a New York Democrat, told Bloomberg in a statement. No one should be able to get around this law, including members who invest in digital currencies.

Members of Congress should absolutely be required to disclose their bitcoin holdings, as to avoid any conflict of interests, Congressman Jared Polis told Bloomberg. The public deserves transparency.

In the years ahead, we expect such disclosure to become mundane for legislators in DC and around the world. Today, its incumbent on Congress to respond to a novel technological development and make it clear to all of its members that asset disclosure now includes cryptocurrencies.

Somethings Fishy: Iranian Oil Tanker On Fire in Ocean 160 Miles from Shanghai Was it Headed to North Korea? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Guest post by Joe Hoft

An Iranian Oil Tanker on its way to Korea was in a collision with a US container ship off the coast of China.  The tanker is now on fire and all but one of its Iranian crew are missing.  Was this ship really bringing its cargo to North Korea like two other tankers identified in recent weeks?

The Guardian is reporting that

The body of one sailor had been found and 31 others were missing after an Iranian-owned tanker collided with a container ship about 160 nautical miles east of Shanghai on Saturday evening. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of light crude oil or about 1m barrels.

The Guardian continued

Chinese authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. The Sanchi, a Panamanian-flagged vessel owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company, was sailing to South Korea from Iran when it collided with a Hong Kong-flagged cargo ship, the CF Crystal, carrying 64,000 tonnes of grain. The Crystals 21 Chinese crew were rescued.

This is not the first oil tanker in recent weeks making the news near North Korea.  In late December the New York Times reported that

South Korea has seized a Hong Kong-flagged oil tanker accused of transferring 600 tons of refined oil to a North Korean ship in October in violation of United Nations sanctions, South Korean officials said on Friday.

The Times mentioned that this ship was registered to a Hong Kong company whose only director was reported as living in Guangzhou, China. In addition the Times reported that the ship

The Lighthouse Winmore docked at the South Korean port of Yeosu on Oct. 11 to load 14,039 tons of refined petroleum from Japan, they said. Four days later, it departed Yeosu, saying it was headed for Taiwan. Instead, it transferred the refined oil to four other ships in international waters, including 600 tons transferred to the North Korean ship Sam Jong 2 on Oct. 19, officials said.

A similar ship-to-ship transfer involving another North Korean ship, Rye Song Gang 1, was capture......

Humans Only Have Few Decades Left. But We Can Change That. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By severing effect from cause, we are not only dangerously cut off from understanding the gravity of these events, but we are also blind to climate change events that (so far) havent resulted in world-wide disasters. For example, the fact that we are literally drowning due to sea level rise is perhaps something youve heard peripherally on some depressing Facebook post over your morning cup of coffee. The reality, however, is that sea level rise is not only an issue that carries with it catastrophic consequences greater than what weve already seen, but its happening faster than previously predicted. In November of last year, NASAs Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) mission warned that due to temperatures as high as 54 above normal, the Greenland ice sheet is far more unstable than we realized.

O'Callahan: The Fight For Patent-Unencumbered Media Codecs Is Nearly Won "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Robert O'Callahan notes an important development in the fight for media codecs without patent issues. "Apple joining the Alliance for Open Media is a really big deal. Now all the most powerful tech companies Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, Facebook, Amazon, Intel, AMD, ARM, Nvidia plus content providers like Netflix and Hulu are on board. I guess there's still no guarantee Apple products will support AV1, but it would seem pointless for Apple to join AOM if they're not going to use it: apparently AOM membership obliges Apple to provide a royalty-free license to any 'essential patents' it holds for AV1 usage."

Microsoft Meltdown and Spectre Patches Bricked Some AMD PCs "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Microsoft's 'Meltdown' updates are reportedly bricking AMD PCs

Following reports of unbootable machines, Microsoft has halted updates of its Meltdown and Spectre security patches for AMD computers, according to a support note spotted by the Verge. It made the move after numerous complaints from users who installed the patch and then couldn't get past the Windows 10 splash screen. "To prevent AMD customers from getting into an unbootable state, Microsoft will temporarily pause sending the following Windows operating system updates to devices with impacted AMD processors," it wrote.

[...] "After investigating, Microsoft has determined that some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown," the company said.

Macrons China visit points to Beijings shifting relationship with Europe "IndyWatch Feed War"

  • French President Emmanuel Macron wrapped is clearly eyeing a special strategic partnership with China, one expert said
  • Frances pivot to closer ties could be beneficial for Beijings divide and conquer strategy, she said
December 10, 2018
.

As French President Emmanuel Macron wrapped up his first official visit to China, there are signs that Beijings relationship with Europe is shifting.

The French politicians first official visit to China is notable for coming as other leaders of the Western world struggle domestically. In fact, Macron appeared as perhaps the leader of Europe at this very moment said Philippe le Corre, a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who herself has a China trip set for the end of January, continues to face questions about Brexit and her own leadership; Germanys Angela Merkel is struggling to form a coalition; and the U.S. is facing political turmoil under Donald Trumps administration.

For his part, Macron is clearly eyeing a special strategic partnership with China, said Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief economist for Asia Pacific at French bank Natixis, pointing to Chinas consumers grow hungrier for what France has to offer.

During his campaign, the French leader took a slightly negative approach to China by pushing for a European-level investment protection agency, but that development seems to have lost ground, Garcia-Herrero said.

Instead, Macron appears to be taking a different angle with China.

Macron seems to have come to...

Kitchen Dining Chair Pads - Parsons chairs come that choosing the perfect one could be a bit daunting. This guide has been constructed to help you select parsons chairs to match your house decor style. Whether you're trying to find a group of dining chairs or one or two chairs to use for dwelling space dividers, this guide is going to direct you in the perfect direction.

They think of sitting rooms and large, formal dining rooms, when folks envision a traditional dcor. A totally skirted, richly upholstered parsons seat does look positively! Conventional parsons chairs can be accommodated for more casual surroundings as well. These designs are timeless and refinedgoing out of fashion. Traits of parsons style chairs that are classic consist of legs . The thighs are usually in the "s-curved" Queen Anne style-- also called cabriole legs - or at the bolder Chippendale fashion. The seat backs are usually crescent scrolled or camel shape. Parsons chairs can be completely skirted, with box or triple pleats for a look.

You have extensive options, when picking upholstery for a fashion parsons chair. Choose a fabric that complements the color scheme and general mood of this space. One sure-fire idea would be to put a fabric-- either solid colored or subtly patterned-- with a darker wood. Ivory, light blue or green are all choices. Traditionally designed chairs may stand up to thicker prints and colors, such as large florals patterns greens, burgundies blues and golds. Nailhead trim, stainless steel bands and tassels are upholstery accents.

New Senators Get Committee Assignments "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

My geekiest feature is my obsession with the makeup of Senate committees, so I was impatiently waiting to get the news of how things would be organized in the post-Roy Moore/Al Franken world. And I am pleased. Very pleased.

The full Senate is set to ratify revised committee rosters and ratios before adjourning Tuesday evening.

The changes add a Democrat to the Finance and Judiciary Committees, because each needed new Democrats to provide an across-the-board one-seat advantage for the GOP with their diminished majority.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York announced the new Democratic assignments, which are highlighted by the appointments of Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California to the Judiciary Committee.

Booker and Harris become only the second and third African-American members of the Judiciary panel in American history.

There's other news, too. You might be interested in this:

Alabama Democratic Sen. Doug Jones will sit on the Banking, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Homeland Security and Aging panels.

Sen. Tina Smith, Minnesotas new appointed senator, has received assignments to the Agriculture, Energy and Natural Resources, HELP and Indian Affairs committees.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse landed the coveted seat on the Finance Committee, which is fine by me.

If I was making the decisions, I'd probably give Jones some different committee assignments, but they're treating him pretty much like any other fresh meat. I expect he'll want to dive into the education work on HELP, and maybe his spot on banking will make him some friends back home that he can't afford to have as enemies if he wants to have a prayer of getting elected to a full term.

For the same reason, I worry that he won't be a solid vote on labor issues which would be really unfortunate for running the HELP committee in the event the Democrats win back a narrow majority.

Tina Smith's assignments seem better suited to helping her make inroads with the constituencies she'll need to hold her seat.

GOP Cares More About Agenda Than Midterms "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Ron Brownstein has a pretty good analysis of the Republicans electoral strategy, but I think hes missing one important ingredient. He identifies two basic decisions that the Republicans have already taken that will have a major impact on the midterms and that will very difficult to compensate for over the course of the campaigns.

The first has been to align more closely with Trump even as questions have mounted about both his basic fitness for the presidency and the potential legal exposure that he and his inner circle might face in the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller. The second has been to pursue a policy agenda, on issues from taxes to health care to the environment, aimed almost entirely at the preferences of their partys conservative base, with strikingly few concessions to any voices or interests beyond their core coalition.

Before November, the GOP might modulate each of these choices. But Republicans have engraved the fundamental outline of each direction so deeply over the past year that they are unlikely to be significantly altered.

The decisions to increasingly lock arms with Trump and to pursue such a partisan agenda reflect the same political calculation. On each front, Republicans are placing the highest priority on maximizing unity and enthusiasm among their base voters even at the price of infuriating and energizing Democrats, and antagonizing more swing voters especially suburban college-educated whites. For voters anywhere on the continuum from ambivalent to alarmed about Trump, congressional Republicans are now sending a clear signal that they are far more inclined to empower than to constrain him.

I think all of that is accurate. Yet, what it seems to miss is that the Republicans are looking to achieve as much as they can while they have their majorities rather than trimming their sails in the effort to maintain their majorities. This should be familiar, as its precisely what the Democrats did in 2009 and 2010. And the Democrats might have hoped back then that theyd be rewarded by their base with a lot of support and enthusiasm in the 2010 midterms, but the eventual result was that the opposition was more mobilized by a very wide margin. It turned out that doing things like vastly expanding access to health care after decades of futility caused the base to moan about the details and be complacent about the accomplishment. Doing what you promised isnt as good of a vote-getter as being in the minority while your party is getting rolled by the opposition.

It didnt help that the Democrats didnt act like they were proud of their achievements or in love with their...

The Government Shutdown Battlefield "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

When you look at all the issues that need to be negotiated before January 19th to avoid a government shutdown, its very hard to see how a shutdown can conceivably be avoided. Theres always the possibility that theyll pass another short-term continuing resolution to buy themselves more time, but even that is looking unlikely.

Because there are so many areas of dispute, both parties have a lot of options for assigning blame to the other side. If there is a shutdown, the Republicans will most likely opt to focus on two areas. One will be the old standby of a strong national defense. The GOP wants to cut a deal to break the budget caps put in place by the Budget Control Act of 2011. But the Democrats are insisting that any increase in authorized spending be split between defense and non-defense spending. The Republicans will argue that the Pentagon has been systematically underfunded ever since 2011 and that the Democrats are leaving our military in a weakened condition. Theyll argue that the Democrats are shutting down the government to protect illegal immigrants, which is also imperiling our national security.

If the Democrats want to shut down the government because they cant get amnesty for illegal immigrants, then theyre going to have to defend those actions to the American people, Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas said Sunday on ABCs This Week program.

As you can see from the two Democratic senators from New Hampshire, the Democrats will never concede that a shutdown is being done to protect the Dreamers because too many of them are frightened by the rhetoric of people like Sen. Tom Cotton. So, while they will appeal to the publics general sympathy for the Dreamers who are protected by an expiring DACA, and they will claim that they are fighting for them, if there is a shutdown they will argue that its about Trumps stupid border wall. And theyll note that Trump promised over and over again that the Mexicans would pay for his stupid border wall.

On the defense appropriations, the Democrats will counter that the Republicans just gave away all the money to millionaires with their tax reform, and that the budget rules are needed to control runaway deficit spending. If the caps are going to be busted, the money should go equally to the military and to domestic spending, including investments in educa...

WikiLeaks Steals Michael Wolff's Book "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

As a writer and editor, I am appalled that WikiLeaks decided to publish Michael Wolffs new book Fire and Fury. If you want to do the right thing, youll go buy it rather than stealing it from the WikiLeaks link. It isnt a suppressed piece of government information of vital interest to the public. Its a book that is for sale, and offering it to everyone for free is not Julian Assanges decision to make. Hes a crook, and he should be prosecuted for doing this.

This is a way for Assange and his patrons to strike back at Wolff and send a message to any publisher who thinks theyll make a lot of money paying for tell-all books from inside TrumpWorld. But its also petty and basically pointless. Wolffs book sales will be robust and adequate even with this sabotage, and now many more people will get a firsthand account of its contents than would have been the case otherwise. On the whole, I think this decision will do Trump more harm than good.

As for the quality of the book, I dont think John Podhoretz is too far off:

Assessing individual scenes in the book can be difficult and it often comes down to whether or not you agree with Wolffs judgment. Wolffs main advantage over every other journalist is that he was there in the West Wing of the White House every day, immersed in the pulse and pace of the place, talking to people in real time before theyd come up with their stories and rationales and excuses to present to the outside world. If a lot of what he writes with authority is still mostly a matter of opinion, its still a very informed opinion.

Its a better read because it doesnt expend much energy with caveats and conditional statements, but it isnt more credible for taking that kind of shortcut. In other words, it appears to be a mostly accurate appraisal and retelling of Trumps first months in office, but one told with shoddy journalistic standards. Historians will find it unreliable, but the rest of us can probably rest easy that hes captured the essence of what we need to know. Youll probably want to read it for free, but that does...

Today, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon stepped down from Breitbart News network after revelations in Michael Wolff's salacious new book sparked a feud between him and President Trump. It is with great pain that I write this, but Steve Bannon simply had to go. First of all, Michael Wolff is telling the truth. I have known Steve Bannon since 2010. Michael Wolff is telling the truth about what Bannon said regarding Don Trump Jr. I know this is true because everything Bannon is quoted as saying to Wolff he also said to me when I met with him at his Embassy, first in August and again in September. At that meeting, Bannon obsessed about money laundering, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. I said that I was under Senate investigation for a fake Russian involvement story, and that the claims of treason were absurd. The conversation then moved on. Of course Bannon bizarrely claims he fired me from Breitbart, but the records show I quit when he (and editor-at-large Joel Pollak) didn't want to break news anymore, content to be a talk radio of the internet and scrape others' content.

Meanwhile, the white stuff blanketed the desert and mountains in Northwest China's Xinjiang province. Highly Classified Satellite Plummeted Into Indian Ocean After SpaceX Launch, Official Confirms "IndyWatch Feed World"

After the launch of the secretive Zuma satellite into outer space aboard the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, reports circulated that the new eye in the sky, which is worth billions, "is presumed to be a total loss after it failed to reach orbit."

Then, as we reported this morning, in the absence of any official statement from either the government or SpaceX itself - understandable since the cargo was so "secret" nobody was willing to make any statements on the record - the mystery around the launch and the payload continued, as in an emailed statement, company President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, said that the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket...

Drones used in attack on Russia's bases in Syria "could only be shipped from US" "IndyWatch Feed World"

The Russian news agency Interfax is reporting that a so far unnamed member of Russia's Federation Council - the upper house of Russia's parliament - has said that the thirteen drones which on Saturday attempted unsuccessfully to attack Russia's two Syrian bases in Khmeimim and Tartus could only have been shipped from the US. Note that this does not outright say that the US supplied the drones to the Jihadis who carried out the attack, though it comes very close. The Interfax report of the statement about the US origin of the drones by the member of Russia's Federation Council is dated 16:31 hours Moscow time. At 16:50 hours Moscow time - ie. just 20 minutes later - Interfax reported the Russian Ministry of Defence saying that at the time of the drone attack on Russia's Syrian bases a US reconnaissance plane was spotted flying over the Mediterranean.

The Forty-Five, or Jacobites and Madmen "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

John Petite, The Jacobites of 1745, 1873

In the realm of human behavior that needs explaining, I offer you the case of Lord George Murray. On September 3, 1745, Lord George wrote to his brother, the Duke of Atholl, to declare his intention of joining Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion, despite having accepted lucrative positions from the government:
I never did say to any person in Life that I would not ingage in the cause I always in my heart thought just and right, as well as for the Interest, Good, and Liberty of my country . . . though what I do may and will be reccon'd desperate . . .  and may very probably end in my utter ruin. My Life, my Fortune, my expectations, the Happyness of my wife and children, are all at stake, and the chances are against me, yet a principle of (what seems to me) Honour, and my Duty to King and Country, outweighs every thing.
Murray was not hungry, or desperate, or oppressed; indeed he had pretty much everything his century could offer. Yet he threw it all away to follow a prince who had never before set foot in Britain.

Once I was a maiden fair
Now its widows weeds I wear
My husband lies not in the grave
But far from me he ploughs the waves
I have a wonderful book about the folklore of the Island of Skye, and mixed in with all the water horses and selkies are dozens of items about Bonnie Prince Charlie, who passed through the island when he was fleeing after his defeat and seems to have been sheltered by every other family on the island. People treasure these memories and have passed them on for generations.

I've just finished reading a quite good book about the Forty-Five, as Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion is generally known, and what lingers in my mind is a puzzle. What is all this about?...

Chinese Leadership On U.N. Reform "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

6 Jan 2017  There have been a number of periods when proposals for new or different United Nations structures were proposed and discussed. The first was in the 1944-1945 period when the Charter was being drafted. Some who had lived through the decline and then death of the League of Nations wanted a stronger world institution, able to move more quickly and effectively in times of crisis or the start of armed conflict. In practice, the League of Nations was reincarnated in 1945 in the U.N. Charter but the names of some of the bodies were changed and new Specialized Agencies such as UNESCO were added. There was some dissatisfaction during the San Francisco negotiations, and an article was added indicating that 10 years after the coming into force of the Charter a proposal to hold a U.N. Charter Review Conference would be placed on the Agenda thus for 1955.

After a Sweet Deal With Dad, Eric Trump Assembles a Valuable Penthouse "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

President Donald Trumps son Eric is preparing to capitalize on a windfall he received from his father during the presidential campaign: Hes combining three luxury Manhattan high-rise apartments, one of which he purchased at a throwaway price from his father, into one potentially lucrative penthouse.

In the spring of 2016, Eric Trump got a great deal from his father. He bought two previously unsold condominium apartments at Trump Parc East for just $350,000 each, about half of the price they had recently been listed for.

Such bargain basement sales are usually treated as gifts by the IRS. But they might not have been taxed that way, tax experts said, because of advantages available only to real estate developers.

Last month, Eric transferred ownership of one of the condos unit 14G and two other adjacent apartments he owns into a new entity called 100 CPS Penthouse LLC.

He had already applied for permits to combine these three units into a 2,400-square-foot apartment on the top floor of a building that overlooks Manhattans Central Park. The estimated cost to combine the apartments: $410,000.

All told, Eric paid just under $3 million for the three apartments. With the estimated renovation costs included, he will have spent more than $3.3 million to create the penthouse.

How much Eric could get on the market if he sold such a large penthouse is not clear, but for compa...

Nikki Haley hosts Jerusalem UN vote after-party for 'Friends of the US': Countries representing 0.5% of world population show up "IndyWatch Feed World"

What if the US Ambassador to the UN had a party for all of America's true friends? The room might be pretty empty. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley hosted a "Friends of the US" reception Wednesday to thank the 64 brave diplomats who didn't scold Donald Trump for his over-the-top Hanukkah gift to his bro, Bibi Netanyahu. There were three levels of guests at the party, really. First, the VERY welcome guests - those who voted with the US, against the resolution. Numero Uno, of course, Israel: "Israel completely rejects this preposterous resolution. Jerusalem is our capital. Always was, always will be," explained Netanyahu. The other heavyweight nations that proudly stood with the United States were Guatemala, Honduras, Togo ("Africa's Best-Kept Secret") and the wee island states of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. As USA Today put it, "Four of the countries - Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau - have combined populations less than Boise, Idaho." This massive amalgamation, this force to be reckoned with, standing arm-in-arm with America, has a total population of less than one half of one percent of the world's population (about 3.7 million).

Psychiatrists say Trump mentally ill "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Psychiatrists say Trump mentally ill

by Jon Rappoport

January 10, 2018

After investigating psychiatry for two decades, Im confident that, if we could go back and rewrite history, deleting all psychiatrists on the planet, so theyd never existdeleting their diagnoses and their drugsthis would have resulted in a massive upsurge in mental health, moving forward

The Daily Mail: A group of leading psychiatrists told a conference that Donald Trump has clear hallmarks of mental illness that compromise his role as president. Twenty-five researchers made a drastic break away from ethical standards by meeting at Yale University on Thursday to discuss evidence questioning the commander-in-chiefs mental health.

Psychiatrist Allen Frances, who has played a central role in defining mental disorders, disagrees. He wrote in the NY Times: Most amateur diagnosticians have mislabeled [Mr. Trump as having] narcissistic personality disorder. He may be a world-class narcissist, but this doesnt make him mentally ill.

Dr. Frances makes an interesting point. He distinguishes between behavior and earning a badge for having a particular mental disorder.

For example, a person can be sad, but that alone doesnt make him a candidate for the label, clinical depression. A person can take aggressive actions against authority, but that doesnt necessarily mean he is suffering from Oppositional Defiance Disorder.

Consider the accusation that Trump has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). What does that mean? What is the official definition of NPD? Here is an excerpt from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the official bible of the American Psychiatric Association. Go ahead, plow through it, itll only take a minute:

The definition of NPD states that it comprises of a persistent manner of grandiosity, a continuous desire for admiration, along with a lack of empathy. It starts by early adulthood and occurs in a range of situations, as signified by the existence of any 5 of the next 9 standards (American Psychiatric Association, 2013):
A grandiose logic of self-importance
A fixation with fantasies of infinite success, control, brilliance, beauty, or idyllic love
A credence that he or she is extraordinary and exceptional and can only be understood by, or should connect with, other extraordinary or important people or institutions
A desire for unwarranted admiration
A sense of entitlement
Interpersonally oppressive behavior
No form of empathy
Resentment of others or a conviction that others are resentful of him or...

Toddler Play Table and Chairs "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Toddler Play Table and Chairs - You can tell if your church seats are due for replacement. It is no secret that all worn chairs out is not comfortable. They reflect on a church and are unappealing, not to mention structurally unsound. Structurally seating that is compromised can give way at any given moment, damaging a salesman member or possibly embarrassing.

When purchasing church seats, caliber is non-negotiable; it is almost always preferable to invest in a few rows of quality chairs that will last for years to come instead of buy a space full of inexpensive seats which will start to fall apart at the seams from the minute they are first employed. You get exactly what you pay for in regards to seats. They give a worth, as they will last considerably longer than quality chairs while quality chairs may not be cheap. Purchasing chairs will provide your congregation an enhanced worship experience and a more comfortable environment.

It may be challenging in the event the church is already overwhelmed by other obligations to obtain church chairs. Luckily, there are a few ideas which you may use even in the face of a church funding to make certain that you are able to buy quality church chairs.

Moldova's government suspends popular president again in order to push through anti-Russian policies "IndyWatch Feed World"

Moldova's Constitutional Court has temporarily suspended pro-Russian President Igor Dodon from his post in order to allow the ruling coalition and the government to enact decrees that Dodon had refused to promulgate. This is the third time Dodon has been temporarily suspended in recent months, and the second time since the beginning of this year. The court suspended Dodon to allow the government to promulgate a bill that bans Russian propaganda, agora.md reported on January 5. Moldova's parliament on December 7 endorsed an amendment to the media law to ban radio and TV programmes "with informative, analytic, military and politic" content produced abroad, except for those produced in the European Union, the US, Canada or signatories of the European Convention on Transfrontier Television.

Looking for a savior in a President is slave mentality "IndyWatch Feed World"

In 2017, I wrote a lot about how dangerously centralized our political system in the U.S. has become, and how we need to decentralize governance in order to restore power, liberty and policy experimentation to the local level. This notion that a sprawling and culturally diverse nation of 325 million individuals should constantly battle to the death over the ring of political power in Washington D.C. so as to impose their view on the other half of the country which completely disagrees is patently ludicrous. States, and even metro areas themselves, should be making most of the important decisions that impact their citizens' lives on a day to day basis. This isn't complicated. People who live in Boulder, Colorado such as myself have a very distinct worldview on most things from the average resident of let's say Houston, Texas. This isn't to say one is superior to the other, we're just talking generally different mindsets and cultures. The residents of these distinct places should be able to express themselves via policy in a way that most fits the desires and values reflective of these particular regions. While this does happen to some degree, all U.S. citizens are still beholden to the whims of centralized political power in Washington D.C. to a very unhealthy and dysfunctional degree.
