Iran Arrests Former President for Sedition, 1969 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good morning, Im still reporting on: Iran Arrests Former President for Sedition, 1969 Synopsis: The Iranian authorities have just arrested their former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and confined him to house arrest to prevent him from re-igniting last weeks widespread protests against the Islamic theocracy. An Arabic newspaper published in the UK cited reliable sources in Tehran who quoted Ahmadinejad as saying about the recent protests: The people are angry at this government because of its monopoly on public wealth. Remember the airplane full of cash that President Obama sent to the Iranian Mullahs just before his departure from the presidency? Why did he send cash? So that it could disappear into the hands of his comrades in the Iranian power structure. Ahmadinejad is mad because he didnt get any of the stolen American loot. Hes been on the outs for some time. Last year, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei banned him from running for president a second time. Ahmadinejad also is quoted as saying: The government of Hassan Rouhani believes that they own the land and that the people are an ignorant society that does not know. What Iran suffers from today is mismanagement and not lack of economic resources. Support Our Sponsors: - Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. Baby Boon High Chair - There are a number of pieces of furniture that every company needs: a good office chair to sit down reception chairs for the guests to wait in , in, a table to meet at, and conference chairs to sit in during meetings. Whether you are currently working at a fortune 500 company or a small start nearly every company needs a good pair of convention chairs to finish their meeting area. A meeting space or A seminar room is a place where workers and customers meet to discuss strategies and ideas for your small business, and sometimes these meetings can last for hours on end. When it is your customers which are going to be getting the most use out of your seminar chairs or your workers, you need to make sure that they are comfy while seated. Seminar chairs provide you with the opportunity to give your meeting room a professional appeal and also the capability to communicate the culture of your company through layout. Just like with every other piece of timing furniture and attention should be given to what sort of conference chair will be excellent for your business.

The very first thing to remember while purchasing a new set of conference chairs is the general atmosphere of your furniture and your organization. Does your office is it more traditional in look or have a style? It is necessary to completely understand the essence of your company too, for instance, if you are a law office that is famous for its professionalism and traditionalism, you would not wish to get a set of modern looking conference chairs to your meeting area. You would wish to go for a chair with genuine leather along with a timber trim to finish your conventional appearance. Make certain to match your office with a similar styling, if your furniture and style are mismatched that can come off as affordable and unprofessional. Furniture truly has the capability to shape the way your company is perceived by your guests so it is essential for them to leave with a positive feeling.

The next step is to choose the type of material that the chairs will soon be cushioned, after specifying the design you may want for your seminar chairs in. Leather is perhaps the choice has the broadest choice of styles to pick from and to go with. It is also a choice, gives off an aura of professionalism, and easy to wash. The only drawback to leather is the fact that it is pricey; infrequently it might be better to go for a leather alternative that's more affordable if you will use your conference space. Vinyl is another choice that is widely chosen since it's generally a bit cheaper in cost than its own leather co...

The True Value of Bitcoin "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

By Chris Martenson of Peak Prosperity

So in the past week, Ive been asked for advice on Bitcoin by my brother-in-law, my local realtor, and close friends from as far away as Texas.

None of them cared to learn what it actually is. Or how it works. They just wanted to understand why suddenly so many folks they know are trying to buy Bitcoin hand over fist. And, of course, should they buy in now, too?

If you (or people you care about) have similar questions, this report is for you.

A Brave New World

Remember the scene from the movie Avatar, where the main character first explores the alien world of Pandora? I found that scene astonishing and beautiful. Hes encountering an entirely new and completely foreign ecosystem.  Every element is fascinating and wondrous, even the dangerous elements yet it all still follows understandable rules.

Everything is involved in either gathering sunlight or eating something else that had. Every niche is filled. Every organism has its own strategy: some light up, some fly, some run, some crawl. As entirely alien as everything is, if you understand the basics of how organisms filled their niches on Earth, you have a great starting point for understanding of the rules of life on Pandora.

Similarly, a great way to begin to understand the new world opened up by Bitcoin (and the other cryptocurrencies) is to realize that its an ecosystem that, at its heart, maps neatly into the universe you already understand. A few examples: payments, identity, contracts, verification, and record keeping (ledgers).

As with any ecosystem in nature, a new organism will survive and flourish if and only if its more efficient and effective than the prior model. For example, nothing has displaced sharks in the past 425 million years because theyre extremely efficient in their niche. To displace them, a new ocean predator would have to come along that does what they do faster, better, and (energetically) cheaper.

So the operative questions we need to keep in mind when looking at the brave new world of digital currencies are: What problem(s) are they solving?, and, Are their solutions faster, better, and/or cheaper?

These are critical questions to answer. When a new technology is first introduced, all manner of fanciful thinking can cloud peoples better judgment with dreams of easy riches. Think back to 1999: as long as dot com was added to the end of a business name, it could raise abundant funds to pursue all manner of impractical ideas. How well did that work out? Just remember Pets.com, Webvan.com and eToys.co; all certified capital destroying ideas.

Investors would have benefited f...

Alright, let's talk about "President Oprah's" Golden Globes speech "IndyWatch Feed World"

I'm being a little facetious with that headline -- but not too facetious, given the social media reaction Leah covered this morning. Let me begin by saying that I did not watch one second of the Golden Globes awards as they aired Sunday night. This wasn't a deliberate boycott on my part; I just wasn't terribly interested. Plus, I hear that The Crown lost to The Handmaid's Tale in major categories, so I suppose I spared myself some aggravation anyway. Nevertheless, the Twitter buzz about Oprah's remarks (she received an award honoring her 'contributions to the world of entertainment'), was so overwhelming that I decided to take nine minutes to watch it in its entirety. I'm glad I did, because it was a damn fine speech. Even if you're not a fan of her work or her politics, I'd encourage you to take a look:

Trump To Call On Pentagon, Diplomats To Play Bigger Arms Sales Role "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Mike Stone and Matt Spetalnick, January 8, 2018

From Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) The Trump administration is nearing completion of a new Buy American plan that calls for U.S. military attaches and diplomats to help drum up billions of dollars more in business overseas for the U.S. weapons industry, going beyond the limited assistance they currently provide, officials said.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce a whole of government approach that will also ease export rules on U.S. military exports and give greater weight to the economic benefits for American manufacturers in a decision-making process that has long focused heavily on human rights considerations, according to people familiar with the plan.

The initiative, which will encompass everything from fighter jets and drones to warships and artillery, is expected to be launched as early as February, senior officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A key policy change would call for embassy staffers around the world to act essentially as a sales force for defense contractors, actively advocating on their behalf. It was unclear, however, what specific guidelines would be established.

But under this more proactive approach, embassy staffers would engage more aggressively with foreign counterparts to push for U.S. arms sales and brief visiting senior U.S. officials so they can help advance pending deals, according to a person familiar with the matter. One senior administration official described the proposal as a 180-degree shift in the current arms-length approach to foreign weapons sales.

Trump is seeking to fulfill a 2016 election campaign promise to create jobs in the United States by selling more goods and services abroad to bring down the U.S. trade deficit from a six-year high of $50 billion.

The administration is also under pressure from U.S. defense contractors facing growing competition from foreign rivals such as China and Russia....

I Didn't Call Don Trump Jr Treasonous, 1968 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good morning, Im still reporting on: I Didn't Call Don Trump Jr Treasonous, 1968 Synopsis: Former Trump insider, Steve Bannon, today praised Donald Trump, Jr. as a patriot and a good man and apologized for not responding sooner to the inaccurate reporting in the new Michael Wolff book, Fire and Fury. Bannon did not offer an explanation for his absence from public view since his departure from the Trump White House which has allowed Wolff to say anything, do anything to gain more attention for his books release two days ago. Where have you been, Steve? In any case, in an exclusive story to the left-leaning 2017 startup news site, Axios, Bannon said he did not think Donald Trump Jr. had been treasonous for taking the offered meeting with a group of Russians. He said that his comments about the meeting were aimed at former Trump campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. [As] a seasoned campaign professional with experience of how the Russians operate, [Manafort] should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr. Bannon apologized for his absence in responding to Wolffs book: "I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency." "Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around." Irans new offensive against social media is showing signs of backfiring.

Authorities in Tehran have ratcheted up their policing of the internet in the past week and a half, part of an attempt to stamp out the most far-reaching protests in Iran since 2009.

But the crackdown is driving millions of Iranians to tech tools that can help them evade censors, according to activists and developers of the tools. Some of the tools were attracting three or four times more unique users a day than they were before the internet crackdown, potentially weakening government efforts to control access to information online.

By the time they wake up, the government will have lost control of the internet, said Mehdi Yahyanejad, executive director of NetFreedom Pioneers, a California-based technology nonprofit that largely focuses on Iran and develops educational and freedom of information tools.

An official at Irans United Nations mission didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.

In recent days, Iran has said it has contained days of public demonstrations against the regime. Protesters used social media to spread the word about, or bear witness to, the protests, as people did during the Green Movement in 2009.

Iran blocked major social-media sites, such as Twitter Inc. and Facebook Inc., in 2009.

NC Imam Invokes Jew-Killing Hadith "IndyWatch Feed War"

An imam in Raleigh, North Carolina area invoked a well-known hadith (a saying of Islams prophet Mohammed) about killing Jews in his sermon on Friday, December 8, 2017. The remarks, delivered by U.S.-based Syrian Imam Abdullah Khadra became known through the Middle East Media Research Institute, which posted the taped sermon.

Abdullah Khadra, an imam in the U.S. from Syria, preached, The Prophet gave us the glad tidings that at the End of Time, we will fight those Jews until the rocks and the trees will speak: Oh Muslim, this is a Jew behind me. The hadith continues to say, come and kill him.

Watch the video of the sermon:

The same day, a imam from Texas also gave a sermon calling for Muslims to kill Jews. Sheikh Raed Saleh Al-Rousan, founder of the Tajweed Institute of Houston, gave the incendiary speech at his mosque.

Khadra  and Al-Rousan are just the latest in a string of preachers to be caught on camera inciting hatred against Jews. Imam Aymen Elkasaby of the Islamic Center of Jersey City was suspended without pay for a month after a sermon he gave calling on Allah to count and kill Jews down to the very last one.

Earlier this year Imam Ammar Shahin of the Islamic Center of Davis California and Imam Mahmoud Harmoush of the Islamic Congregation of Riverside made similar calls to arms to their congregations. They were speaking after Israel installed metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount where the Al Aqsa mosque is located as a security precaution after four policemen were murdered by Palestinian terrorists on and near the entrance to the Temple Mount.

Another imam, Dr. Sayed Moustafa Al-Qazwini told his congregation in July that ISIS is the production of the Israeli intelligence.

How the 25th Amendment Will Be Used to Remove President Trump On Fake Mental Illness Allegations "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Russian Collusion Delusion has collapsed. However, the President has a new challenge that will threaten his presidency. President Trumps insistence that America has become a hell-hole and the swamp needed to be drained, has earned him the mental health diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This is the modern day equivalent of the old Soviet diagnosis of political schizophrenia.

The former Obama administration and their partner in pseudoscience, the American Psychiatric Association (APA), previously created a totally bogus and scientifically unproven mental illness to be used against President Trump in order to justify removing him under the disability clause in the 25th Amendment.

The APA created the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (5th Edition) which was  adopted only a couple of years ago. DSM 5 is highly controversial and has sparked outrage from the mental health practitioners. As many of these practitioners point out, the new DSM-V makes a pathology out of simple and normal behaviors such as grieving for the loss of a loved one and downright healthy defiance of perceived injustice.

This approach constitutes an unprecedented a relatively new and subjective approach in diagnosing of mental illness as it promises to end free speech and any form of political dissent. It will also be used to remove the current President if the People sit by and let this happen.

The Deep State has declared, through its compromied ally, the APA, that anyone who opposes its unconstitutional policies as having political paranoia,  which is now diagnosed as a type of mental illness. Subsequently, anyone who disagrees with some established authority is deemed to be suffering from Oppositional Defiant Disorder. And there is now a Yale psychologist who has been briefing Congress on his diagnosis of the President.

After the disclosure of the flaws, security experts pointed out that the Spectre vulnerability is very hard to patch, but fortunately, the exploitation is much more difficult than Meltdown.

Another worrisome aspect of the Spectre attacks is that it breaks the isolation between different applications opening the door to remote attacks, for example, an attacker can remotely bypass sandboxing mechanism implemented by modern browsers.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D, Md.) got called out in an appearance on MSNBC after he lied and claimed he has never called for President Donald Trump to be impeached.

The goofy representative has proposed a bill to form a commission to determine whether the president is fit for office but bizarrely claims it has nothing to do with Trump.

In an interview with Katy Tur, Raskin his bill is not a body devoted to looking at Donald Trumps fitness for office.

When Tur followed up about his desire to impeach the president, Raskin tried to lie his way out of it.

Heres the thing, congressman. You want to impeach this president. Youve said so, Tur said.

Seemingly flustered over being called out by his own sides media, Raskin denied her claim. No, I haventwhen did I say that? he asked.

Youve said you wanted to impeach the president, Tur stated matter-of-factly. She then went on to read his own comment about his desire to impeach. I want to say this for Donald Trump, who I may well be voting to impeach over the next year or two, she quoted him saying at a rally in January 2017, noting that the statement drew applause from the crowd.

You definitely dont want him as president, she said.

Raskin, still seemingly flustered, dodged the question and responded that I think the media is conflating impeachment and the 25th Amendment. He then began to ramble off facts about the 25th Amendment and that it is meant to address a president who lacks the mental or physical capacity required for office.

Theyre two separate things, he said following his lies and dodging.

Since Raskin doesnt seem capable of keeping his own comments straight, perhaps there should be a commission on his own mental fitness for office.

Watchtroll is Where Information and Facts Come to Die in the Name of PTAB Bashing (Trolls Lobbying) "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Some shredded paper

Summary: The latest anti-PTAB posts from Watchtroll (they make up almost most of the articles so far this year) and what can be deduced from Wi-Fi One v Broadcom a new decision from a high court

THE EPOs management is a premier source of lies, but its closely matched by Gene Quinns Watchtroll. Google News is syndicating far too much trash, or so-called news sites that are actually marketing and lobbying. Watchtroll is one of those sites. It can almost give one a headache trying to figure out how Watchtroll comes up with its misleading spin and deceptive headlines. Google, in turn, relays that to a broader audience.

The latest PTAB bashing at Watchtroll (they do this every day now) is beyond moronic. Professional writers who do such lobbying disregard fact-checking. What on Earth is this (by Steve Brachmann and Gene Quinn)? Its an incredibly misleading headline; it says 58 Patents Upheld in District Court Invalidated by PTAB on Same Grounds, but its not on same grounds at all, just different interpretation of same Sections (e.g. 102 and 103).

Then, later in the day, Gene Quinn, Steve Brachmann, Josh Malone and Paul Morinville (the patent 'extremist' who dons a cowboy hat) came up with PTAB Facts: An ugly picture of an tribunal run amok.

Facts

Yeah, just keep using that word. Facts

Donald Trump too claims to be tweeting facts, even if in less than a year he has already been caught telling about 2,000 lies or misleading statements (some people track them all and keep count).

The patent microcosm and its deceitful lobby (sites like Watchtroll) are clearly losing the debate online; laws are turning against them, courts rule against their interests. So lying seems to have become the last resort. Sorry, not lying but facts

Alternative facts

Thats the role of Watchtroll. Here is...

4 Problems with Oprah's much ballyhooed speech on #MeToo "IndyWatch Feed World"

On Sunday evening, Oprah Winfrey received the Cecille B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. She proceeded to launch into an emotional speech about the power of women to fight back against sexism and sexual malfeasance - a speech that led to widespread celebration in Hollywood, where everyone knew about the problem of sexual harassment and assault and nobody did anything for years, but where one speech from the most powerful woman in the history of media can apparently cure all ills. Oprah's speech was quite good, of course. She's a terrific performer, and she's world famous for her ability to connect with her audience on a personal level. The speech led NBC to tweet out its support for her presidential candidacy, and led actress Reese Witherspoon to elevate Oprah to the level of Jesus:

Eyeing troubled EU ties, Polands president fires top ministers "IndyWatch Feed War"

Reuters

WARSAW (Reuters) Polands ruling conservatives fired several senior government ministers on Tuesday in an apparent move to improve relations with the European Union strained over accusations that Warsaw is subverting rule of law standards.

Facing unprecedented EU legal action over the alleged politicization of Polands judiciary, the Law and Justice (PiS) party may want to ease tensions in other areas, such as environment policy and defense, analysts say.

The changes also came with the EU about to embark on negotiations on a new seven-year budget that will decide which member states get what out of the blocs coffers with Poland currently the biggest net recipient.

President Andrzej Duda, acting on recommendations of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, dismissed Environment Minister Jan Szyszko, who has spearheaded far-reaching logging in an ancient forest in Poland that prompted action by the European Court of Justice.

Also losing their job were Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz, a former anti-communist crusader facing criticism over delays in army modernisation and conflicts with top generals, as well as Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, seen in Brussels as an ineffective diplomat.

The reshuffle followed the appointment of former banker and finance minister Morawiecki as prime minister, replacing Beata Szydlo, last month at the midpoint of the parliamentary term. PiS faces local elections in late 2018 and legislative and presidential ballots in 2019 and 2020.

It remains to be seen whether Morawiecki will improve Warsaws relations with Brussels. He heads to Brussels later on Tuesday for talks.

Judicial reforms at the heart of the dispute with Brussels are seen by PiS as a fundamental element of its efforts to overhaul Polands democratic institutions.

PiS believes reforms are needed because the country has lost sight of its Catholic soul and is steeped mentality and power structures dating to the post-war communist era. Critics say that the governments efforts to wield control over courts and public media are tilting Poland toward authoritarian rule.

Philippines to protest over China activity on reclaimed reef "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP

WESTCOM/AFP | Fiery Cross Reef is an outcrop that Beijing turned into an artificial island and which now appears to house a military base
MANILA (AFP)  The Philippines will lodge a diplomatic protest with China after Manila questioned if Beijing had reneged on a pledge not to militarise a disputed South China Sea reef.Beijing claims nearly all of the sea and has been turning reefs in the Spratly and Paracel chains into islands, installing military facilities and equipment on them.

Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana Tuesday said Manila was investigating reports of recent Chinese activity on Fiery Cross Reef, an outcrop that Beijing turned into an artificial island and which now appears to house a military base.

 Image may contain: sky

Lorenzana spoke out despite recent moves by President Rodrigo Duterte to ease tensions with China.

According to them they are not militarising (the reefs) and it was for peaceful purposes only like tourism, Lorenzana said.

But if it is true and we can prove that they have been putting soldiers and any weapons, defensive (or) otherwise, that would be a violation of what they said.

Lorenzana said he had also received reports Philippine fishermen had been harassed by Chinese coastguards.

Last month, a US think tank released new satellite images showing deployment of radar and other equipment in disputed South China Sea islands.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) said the buildup continued despite rival claims across the sea from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Over 2017, China installed infrastructure to support air and naval bases, such as large radar and sensor arrays, the Washington-based think tank said.

Fiery Cross Reef saw the most construction last year, with building work spanning 27 acres, or about 110,000 square metres, AMTI said its analysis of satellite images showed.

The Philippines had previously been one of the most outspoken countries in standing up to Chinas claim to most of the South China Sea.

This culminated in Manilas complaint to a United Nations-backed tribunal that ruled in July 2016 that Chinas territorial claims in the sea were without legal basis....

Trump may cause the extinction of the entire human race, says hysterical Yale psychiatry professor "IndyWatch Feed World"

President Doanld Trump is severely mentally impaired and may force the extinction of the entire human race, according to Dr. Bandy Lee, a Yale psychiatrist and clinical professor. Woah, what did she say? Lee, who is internationally known and has briefed members of Congress on Trump's mental fitness, told Newsweek last week that Trump's mental impairment is not just dangerous for the United States - but for the entire world. And with each passing day, the dangers become greater, she said. "As more time passes, we come closer to the greatest risk of danger, one that could even mean the extinction of the human species," Lee said. "This is not hyperbole. This is the reality." How bad does she say it is? According to Lee, it's a "public health emergency that needs to be responded to as quickly as possible."

The number of shops going bust increased last year for the first time in five years, new data shows. Deloitte said on Monday that 118 retailers went into administration last year, up from 92 in 2016. Humans Can Fly in This Drone-Like Electric Hybrid 'Octocopter'

The company that partnered with UPS to create a package-delivering drone is ready to fly its new passenger aerial vehicle.

The SureFly, a two-seater electric hybrid helicopter (or "octocopter," because of its eight propellers), has received approval from the FAA to take a test flight at CES in Las Vegas on Jan. 8.

Designed by Ohio-based commercial transportation solutions company Workhorse Group, the SureFly is designed to be safer, easier to fly and more affordable than a typical chopper. SureFly pilots can drive the aircraft in a similar manner to a drone -- via joystick instead of steering wheel -- and carry up to 400 pounds for up to 70 miles at a time. The aircraft is also compact: It's smaller than a pickup truck, plus its arms and propellers fold to simplify transportation and storage.

Pakistan court frees anti-US cleric amid spat with Trump "IndyWatch Feed War"

Sufi Mohammad (AP)
PESHAWAR, Pakistan: A Pakistani court has ordered the release of a radical anti-US cleric who went to Afghanistan with thousands of volunteers to help the Taliban fight against Americans after the 2001 US-led invasion, a defense lawyer said Tuesday.
.
The development comes amid rising US-Pakistani tensions following President Donald Trumps accusations that Pakistan was harboring militants and the withholding of American aid to Islamabad.
.
Sufi Mohammad was set free on health grounds and the paperwork for his release was still being processed Tuesday, said defense lawyer Fida Gul.
.
Mohammad, imprisoned since 2009, is also known as the father-in-law of Mullah Fazlullah, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban who is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan.

Washington accuses Pakistan of turning a blind eye to militants. Pakistan denies the charge. Last week, Trump said that the United States had foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid in the last 15 years and had gotten nothing in return but lies & deceit.

The Swiss Franc and The Euro: What Now? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

By: Mihai Macovei
francs.PNG

In January 2015, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) unexpectedly removed the de facto peg of the franc to the euro.1 The move was welcomed by free-market economists, including in contributions on Mises Wire2. It was deemed that the short-run adjustments to the Swiss economy triggered by the appreciation of the franc were preferable to the macro-economic stability risks posed by the inflation imported from the euro area during the peg. Yet, it would have been difficult to anticipate that the SNB's interventionist monetary policy would continue aggressively also after the peg.

Let's give some background. Since the onset of the Great Recession, investors flocked into the Swiss franc as a safe haven asset. They feared that ultra-loose monetary and fiscal policies would damage the quality of most other major currencies. Significant net financial inflows to the tune of CHF 460bn (70% of 2016 GDP) made their way into the alpine economy as a repatriation of bank deposits. Simultaneously, large current account surpluses amounting to about CHF 600bn were recorded. More than half of the external inflows were purchased by the SNB in order to limit the appreciation of the franc and help exporters. It led to a vast increase in foreign reserve assets of about CHF 690 bn3. The SNB also reduced aggressively its interest rates to negative levels, surpassing both the Fed and the ECB.

The extremely large scale of SNB monetary interventions, not only during, but also outside of the peg, has probably been less obvious to most observers. Helped by the negative interest rate differential, the monthly average of external financial inflows dropped into half during the peg (left chart below). Nevertheless, the SNB's FX purchases - measured as the change in foreign reserves absorbed almost fully the external inflows. After the peg, SNB's FX purchases declined to about 60% of fore...

Raspberry Pi Aint Afraid Of No Spectre And Will Not Meltdown "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

While theres broad agreement that Meltdown and Spectre attacks are really bad news at a fundamental level, there is disagreement on its immediate practical impact in the real world. Despite reassurance that no attacks have been detected in the wild and theres time to roll out the full spectrum of mitigation, some want to find protection right now. If youre interested in an usable and easy to set up modern desktop thats free of Meltdown or Spectre threats, a Raspberry Pi can provide the immunity you seek.

[Eben Upton] explained the side channel attacks using fragments of Python for illustration, which was an enlightening read independent of the Raspberry Pi pitch. While these ARM cores perform speculative instruction fetches, they dont speculatively execute them or modify the cache. Under the current circumstances, that makes all the difference in the world.

A clever security researcher may yet find a way to exploit speculative fetches in the future, and claiming that Raspberry Pi has superior security would be a stretch. The platform has its own set of security problems, but today Meltdown/Spectre is not among them. And that just might be enough to sway some decisions.

If you need to stay in the x86 world, look over what itd take to to rewind back to an Intel 486.

Israels intelligence chief: Israel Has Eyes, Ears and Even More in Iran "IndyWatch Feed War"

Yossi Cohen says Irans economic woes are pushing people out into the streets, but one must temper expectations and that protesters are faced with opposing forces

By Tali Heruti-Sover Jan 09, 2018 1:42 PM

Head of the Mossad Yossi Cohen in a committee meeting on June 8, 2017.

Head of the Mossad Yossi Cohen in a committee meeting on June 8, 2017. Emil Salman
.

Mossad chief Yossi Cohen said Tuesday at a Treasury event that Israel has eyes, ears and even more in Iran. Cohen addressed the ongoing protests in Iran, saying that Iranian civlians are protesting the Islamic Republics current economic woes because despite high expectations from the popular [President Hassan] Rohani, he has not managed in the eyes of a large part of the population to improve the economic situation.

Cohen added that this reality is pushing people out into the streets, but one must temper expectations. I would like to see a revolution, but the protesters are faced with opposing forces. Meanwhile, we are seeing that Iran is spending more and more on security in order to push its aspirations of spreading influence throughout the Middle East.

According to Cohen, there have been dramatic changes in the U.S. understanding of the situation in the Middle East since the beginning of U.S. President Donald Trumps term, as well as a process of strengthening ties between Israel and the U.S.

We see a good change that may take Israeli security interests further into account, and by doing so it will help our struggle to change the direction of Iranian influence.

On Sunday, the Israeli security cabinet convened for a long meeting on the situation on the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, expressed concerns over developments on the northern front amid Irans growing influence in the region. Israel is also concerned about the replenishment of the Assad regimes missile arsenal, which was almost entirely used up fighting the rebels, and the establishment of Iranian weapons plants in Syria and Lebanon

Remember, Oprah Winfrey Is Our Premier National Snake Oil Salesman "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

After her rousing speech at the Golden Globes about sexual harassmentshes got to do something to atone for her years as one of Harvey Weinsteins celebrity palsweve been inundated with calls for Oprah Winfrey to run for president.

The official NBC network account went so far as to post (and later delete) a tweet hailing her as OUR future president. Her long-time consort Stedman Graham told the Los Angeles Times, She would absolutely do it. Meryl Streep got so carried away she told The Hill, Now she doesnt have a choice but to run. It continues to amaze me that there are actors in Hollywood who can portray intelligence on the screen without possessing a scrap of it themselves. Acting is truly a magical art.

There are a great many reasons Winfrey should not run for president. Chief among them is that she has built her career, not just as a charismatic daytime television star, but also as our nations premier snake oil salesman. How The Autotuned Smells Like Teen Spirit Explains Everything Wrong With Pop Music "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Sleep Good, a band from Austin (theyre not bad!) decided to mess with everyone by putting Kurt Cobains vocals in Smells Like Teen Spirit (SLTS) through an autotune plug-in and changing the song into a major key. This is the result:

Hearing this is such a strange experience that Im not surprised everyone is talking about it. What Im afraid of is that everyone is drawing the wrong lessons from it. The headline on the piece at Esquire is, Smells Like Teen Spirit in the Wrong Key Proves That Nirvana Could Have Been a Great Pop Band.

Lets get something straight: Nevermind sold 30 million copies worldwide, and 10 million copies in the U.S. Its not that Nirvana could have been a great pop bandthey indisputably were a great pop band, and more precisely, they were great because they redefined the notion of what could be popular music. Indeed, the real problem with pop music is that we live in a world where everyone is telling you what is pop by cramming it down your throat without letting people organically decide en masse whether they like it.

With that in mind, Ive been thinking about this a video for a while and this weird little experiment kind of explains how everything with the 90s alternative revolution went horribly wrong. Nirvana made such a massive impact that they established an inescapable template far too many subsequent bands tried to follow yet, as this shows, almost no one got it right. Whats amazing is that when you change SLTS definitively into a major key, it sounds so generically 90s its amazing. The overall vibe is less reminiscent of Nirvana and more reminiscent of, say, Letters to Cleo or a million other forgettable grungy bands that clogged up Alternative Nation on MTV when I was in college.

Best I can figure, there are two fairly special things about SLTS. The first thing is, as the autotune amply demonstrates, is the overall melodic sensibility. So its time for some music theory. (Nota Bene: I am an entirely self-taught musician. If anyone from, say, Berklee is reading this, feel free to point me in the right direction.)

Should Americans Accept The College Boards Deformed History Of Europe? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The American Enterprise Institutes Frederick Hess and Grant Addison writing at National Review Online give the National Association of Scholars (NAS) credit for pointing out flaws in the College Boards Advanced Placement European History (APEH) framework. But Hess and Addison are concerned that, after the College Board responded to our critique by making changes, NAS has continued to find significant fault with APEH.

This is familiar territory. A few years ago, NAS drew national attention to flaws in the College Boards premiere AP framework, the one for U.S. history (APUSH). That framework had stood untouched for decades until the College Board issued a radical revision 2013. The College Board brushed off our criticisms for six months, but as pressure mounted decided in early 2015 that APUSH could stand some improvement.

The changes it made were largely although not entirely cosmetic. Among the most substantive alterations made in that round was restoring the American Founding as a topic in the year-long course on American history for high school juniors. Thats right. The College Board had launched a new curriculum on American history that minimized the importance of the American Founding. What were they thinking?

A History of Cosmetic Revisions to Defective Curricula

We were grateful for the College Boards 2015 revisions to its 2013 APUSH framework, but mindful that the College Board had changed only the written framework, not the all-important exam that reflects the framework, not the supplementary teaching materials, and not the recommended textbooks. Moreover, the querulous spirit of the 2013 framework remained.

If all you knew of American history was what the College Board put into its 2015 revised framework, you would know that America has always been an aggressively exploitative country dominated by a grasping elite that heedlessly oppressed Native Americans, blacks, women, immigrants, workers, and children. The other details filtered into the framework were subordinate to this rancor.

No sooner had we pointed out the eye-washing than Wall Street Journal deputy editor Daniel Henninger published a column headlined, ...

The Trans Lobby Hates This Man For Proving Sex-Change Regret Is Real "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Is regret permissible? And if you regret something in your life, should you be allowed to talk about it with others? Publicly? The answer is so obviously yes that any reasonable person would be baffled to even hear such questions. Thats because regret is simply part of being human.

But what if you regret trying to change your sex? Or maybe youre just tired of propping up a persona? Worse, what if you regret having all of the surgery to promote the illusion of a sex change? This is the case with Walt Heyer, who lived as a woman for nearly a decade then de-transitioned after coming to terms with the fact that he was born male.

He has written books about his experience and has a website called www.sexchangeregret.com. Today Heyer is inundated with calls and emails from transgender individuals who regret their decisions, but feel they must live in the shadows.

Interest in Walts website has exploded over the past couple of years, especially after murmurs of regret started getting a bit of coverage in the news. Walts website receives about 25,000 visits in any given month, and at least a thousand transgender people have personally sought him out to talk to him about their regrets.

Detransitioners face a lonely and difficult road in todays era of political correctness. Hollywood, the media, and academia promote a culture hostile to them for even considering changing their minds. This leaves regretters with virtually no place to go to talk about their feelings. The near-total politicization of the field of psychiatry now calls for the total affirmation of transgenderism and implicit punishment for those who dont comply. This means regretters have a hard time even finding a therapist willing to talk openly and honestly with them about the possibility of de-transitioning.

Trans Fatigue Is Setting In

Trans-mania probably peaked at some point in the past year or so. Early in the wake of the sexual revolution, gender benders got increasing press coverage. It built up over the decades, and I think well look back and see Bruce Jenners 2015 Vanity Fair cover story as the high-water mark of the trans fad. The media and the trans lobby is certainly in denial about this. But a lot of folks are feeling a decline in trans-mania.

Society is now in the throes of trans fatigue. This is reflected in the profusion of newer websites openly explor...

Coming Out As A Republican To My Democrat Family Went Worse Than Coming Out Gay "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I am not a sex offender. But a number of my friends no longer have time to see me. Lifelong acquaintances now regard me with fear and distrust. I have been unfriended en masse on social media and excoriated by friends who deign to remain. And I have been singly excluded from social gatherings when the rest of my family was invited.

No, I am not a sex offender. I am something even worse than that. I am a Donald Trump supporter.

I was raised in a liberal Jewish family in Washington DC, where my dad served as a Democratic congressman for Los Angeles. Accordingly, I was indoctrinated with all of the correct values and views.

When I was seven, my dad took me on a celebrity-packed camping trip to Death Valley as part of a campaign to protect Californias deserts. Israel took center stage in family discussions. I attended a Quaker elementary school, where I learned the black national anthem before I knew the Star Spangled Banner. In high school art class, I even chose to focus on mans destruction of the environment. I came out to my family as gay at the ripe age of 20, and they were duly overjoyed.

It was always a given that Republicans are bad people, representative of that shameful sliver of our flawed society that values money above the planet and think the world would be better off if everyone were a straight, white male. At a minimum they are racist, misogynistic and homophobic. Left to their own devices, they would exclude ethnic minorities from everything, kick sinful gay offspring onto the streets, and pave our parks over with oil derricks.

Of course, there are the less malicious Republicans, the ones who have fallen victim to their gun-toting, Bible-thumping families and sadly do not know any better than what they have been told. This type is not entirely to blame for their ignorance; they just deserve our pity. These truths are held by my family and our extended social and political networks to be self-evident.

These Ideas Didnt Work Out Long-Term

When, in my adulthood, the liberal policy agenda became problematic for me, I found myself at a loss. I began to raise questions with my family and friends, and met resistance. It was not because my concerns were particularly inappropriate; I was just not supposed to be questioning at all.

One could disagree with nuances, but not the judgment of the (then) president, or the party. Period. The irony of this apparent intolerance for diversity of thought by the party claiming to champion the rights of groups underserved by the status quo was not lost on me.

For the first time in my progressive life, standing up for the values that I most strongly espousetruth, morality, self-reliance, boundaries, tolerance, and a healthy dose of Jewish skepticismwas damagi...

This All-Republican Congress Avoids Tough Choices Now, Meaning Worse Choices Later "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The tax bills effective repeal of Obamacares individual mandate briefly reprised the broccoli mandatewhether, as Justice Antonin Scalia asked during Supreme Court oral arguments on Obamacare in March 2012, the federal government could compel individuals to purchase certain foods.

But instead of broccoli, spinach might serve as a more apt analogy, for the way the tax bill came to repeal the mandate demonstrates the ways Congress refuses to eat its policy spinach, following the path of least resistance in making easy choices rather than tough ones.

Avoiding Tough Choices on Taxes

In an interview with Politico, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who first proposed repealing the mandate as part of the tax bill, said he became convinced that the GOP had to target the individual mandate during an October 26 meeting with Senate Finance Committee members. Republican senators detailed what Cotton described as a parade of horriblesa series of popular tax breaks they would need to rescind.

Cotton said the looks of hesitance and outright terror on the faces of my colleagues convinced him that Republicans had to repeal the mandate as part of the tax package. Translation: Republicans thought it easier to obtain revenue from repealing the mandate than to weed out the tax code of popular tax breaksthe point of tax reform, which Republicans initially sold as a way to simplify the Internal Revenue Code.

Remember how Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) sold tax reform as a way to allow Americans to complete their taxes on a postcard? That type of reform didnt happen, because enacting that reform would have involved eliminating many more popular deductions than the final tax bill ended.

Revenue Neutrality and Spending

Another key point in the tax debate surrounded the issue of revenue neutrality. The Better Way platform released by House Republicans last year not only envision[ed] tax reform that is revenue neutral, it included a very clear standard for that metric: House Republicans measure revenue neutrality by reference to a current policy baselinei.e., achieving a level of federal revenues that is approximately $400 billion less over the ten-year [budgetary] window than the current law baseline.

However, even after taking into account this $400 billion adjustment, and projected increases in federal revenue coming from higher economic growth, the tax b...

From down the ages comes a common childrens game called You-show-me-yours-Ill-show-you-mine. Surely, sweet reader, you never played it. But just as surely you have heard of it. After all, it does still exist. It comes now with upgrades.

Campus Reform informs us that the once-eminent Jesuit university has approved a residential housing option reserved exclusively for students interested in exploring gender-and-sexuality conundrums beyond the confines of a seminar room. Associate Director of Residential Education Katie Heather informs student Grace Smith, leader of the LLC [Living Learning Community] effort, that her proposal [for a queer-only campus residence has been approved and accepted for the 2018-2019 academic year. Congratulations!'

Heathers email to Smith, who heads the student governments LGBTQ+ Inclusivity Policy Team, adds that logistics are being finalized: This includes the location of the community, marketing, and the application process.

Note the emphasis on marketing. Georgetown will promote the LLC dorm as a selling point. With an annual price tag of about $72, 214 (base tuition of $52,300 plus room, board, and standard add-ons), the universitys expanded excursion into non-judgmental, fictive experience willit is hopedbroaden consumer appeal and be good for box office.

PBSs Special On Spains Colonization Of Florida Sidelines Real History For Politics "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Indeed, Secrets of Spanish Florida, a documentary PBS stations showed between Christmas and New Year and part of the Secrets of the Dead series produced by WNET in New York, proved little more than another exercise in hijacking history. Its one more sign we cant trust taxpayer-funded PBS even when it occasionally tries its hand at its original remit: educating audiences. The broadcaster has fully signed up to the cultural Marxist presentation of history as an eternal struggle between societys privileged and its victims.

Always Displacing the Founding Fathers

In this reading, the Spanish conquistadors who in 1565 founded St. Augustine in Florida, the first European settlement in North America, become members of the victims group. How can PBS do that? Because the conquistadors can be presented as a preferred alternative to the apparently awful reality we have had instead for the past 453 years.

Apparently they, and not the Pilgrims or the 1776 generation, were the real American Founding Fathers. As historian Jane Landers asserts in the documentary, If you really wanted to look at the founding fathers, youd look a lot earlier, and youd look south.

Its a point the documentary drives home again and again. Don Alvaro Armada Barcaiztegui, the Count of Guemes, can justifiably take pride in being descended from the lead conquistador, or Adelantado, Pedro Menendez de Aviles. But the Spanish nobleman incorrectly boasts, Pedro Menendez and the people who went with himthey are really the fathers of the United States, the true fathers of the United States.

Nor is the narrator right when he states, Its just as much a part of American history as George Washington crossing the Delaware, or Paul Reveres ride. It doesnt take long to realize the documentary-makers are clumsily pressing the conquistadors into service as an allegory for todays immigrants from Latin America. The narrator asks early on: How does it change our thinking about race and immigration in this country to know what really happened?

But we didnt get what really happened, just agitpropas when the narrator tells us: The artifacts that have been discovered throughout the city reveal that the population in Americas first colony more closely resembles the diversity of Americas population...

Fired Engineer Sues, Claims Google Discriminates Against White, Male Conservatives "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The engineer Google fired over a memo he drafted regarding differences between men and women in the workplace announced Monday hes filing a class-action lawsuit against the company.

James Damore and another former Google engineer, David Gudeman, allege in the suit that Google unfairly discriminates against white men with conservative political views. Damore and Gudeman say in the suit they aim to represent all Google employees who have been discriminated against on the basis of their sex, race, or political views.

Google targeted and punished employees who expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace, the suit filed by Dhillon Law Group claims. Damore and Gudeman also claim Google shames hiring managers who fail to meet illegal diversity quotas in place, and that male and white candidates are openly said to be less favored than others in the hiring process.

In one part of the suit highlighted by Fox News Tucker Carlson, Damore and Gudeman claim the company stifled conservative parenting styles and encouraged every sexual practice imaginable except heterosexual monogamy. Google furnishes a large number of internal mailing lists catering to employees with alternative lifestyles, including furries, polygamy, transgenderism, and plurality, for the purpose of discussing sexual topics, the suit states. The only lifestyle that seems to not be openly discussed on Googles internal forums is traditional heterosexual monogamy.

A footnote next to the term plurality reads: For instance, an employee who sexually identifies as a yellow-scaled wingless dragonkin and an expansive ornate building presented a talk entitled Living as a Plural Being at an internal company event.

Damore was fired in August 2017 after an internal memo he wrote on workplace identity politics, titled Googles Ideological Echo Chamber, was leaked to the press. His observations in the memo suggesting biological differences between men and women could help explain why fewer women work in tech, rather than entirely result from institutional sexism, ignited a firestorm of criticism. It was called a sexi...

Why This Sportsman Supports President Trump In Reversing Obamas Bears Ears Land Grab "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As I recently listened to a popular podcast, it amazed me to hear two hunting enthusiasts bash President Trump for redefining the boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument. The archery hunters quickly decided Trumps decision would hurt their hunting rights. It would only be a matter of minutes before real estate developers and oil companies broke ground.

When I heard President Obama had declared Bears Ears a national monument in the last month of his presidency, I was excited. But after digging into what he had actually made happen, I realized it was bad, for two reasons.

One, the Utah people didnt want it; and two, this would be bad for access and ability to hunt for sportsmen like meif not now, in the future. So, what are the facts as we know them?

Obama Stuck a Big No Use Sign on Bears Ears

On December 28, 2016, Obama created the Bears Ears National monument with the stroke of a pen. He did not seek congressional authorization, instead yanking the land into restricted federal domain using the century-old Antiquities Act. He ignored Utahs elected representatives and others voices that have been protesting federal control and this possibility for years.

The Antiquities Act allows the president to change the management of existing federal lands without congressional consent. As president, Obama used this law more than any president had before, by far, vacuuming up 550 million acres by creating 34 national monuments. Thats about one-quarter of the national monument total, created in just the past decade.

Wyoming is the only state in the country not covered by this act. Wyoming made a deal in 1950, trading the creation of Grand Teton National Park for future exemption from the power of the acta deal they see as very good in hindsight.

Bear Ears was already federally controlled land. Obama deemed it a national monument, which has extreme effects on what is called multiple uses. This forbids it from broad public use such as hunting and fishing, and prioritizes keeping the land as little touched by humans as possible.

As soon as the president signed the order, Utahns lost more of their voices and rights. Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee said, This arrogant act by a lame duck president will not stand. I will work tirelessly with Congress and the incoming Trump administration to honor the will of the people of Utah and undo this designation. A poll found 60 percent of Utahns opposed designating the land as Obama did, preferring it to remain more open to the public. Imagine that, states wanting to make...

The Dark Side Of Rules Against Free Speech "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In December, the latest episode in the Star Wars franchise, The Last Jedi, dropped out of hyperspace trailing spectacular effects, sassy droids, spunky rebels, and young heroes tempted by the dark side, etc.

Its an ongoing trope, this seduction of the innocents. If only you knew the dark side of the Force, Darth Vader rumbles ominously to a young Luke Skywalker. Chancellor Palpatine has almost the same conversation with Anakin, the whiny teenage Jedi. Learn to know the dark side of the Force, Palpatine urges.

Now its Supreme Leader Snoke who dangles shadowed omnipotence in front of Rey, who reliably says no thanks, and Kylo Ren, who keeps backsliding out of evil, then back-backsliding into it again. You almost wish dark side recruiters were always so naked in their appeals; young people might avoid the kind of error that sustains coercive entities like The Empire, The First Order, or university staff determined to preserve a chilly peace on campus by prohibiting speech they dont care for.

This all-too-common academic opinion turned up again in December, in remarks by Judith Butler, a gender theorist and professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of California-Berkeley.

Arguing for the need to muzzle conservative speakers on campus to avoid triggering those who might disagree with them, Butler said, If free speech does take precedence over every other constitutional principle and every other community principle, then perhaps we should no longer claim to be weighing or balancing competing principles or values.

No, we should still do that. Its just that free speech needs a first-among-equals status that the professor would deny it, because it is the very tool we use to do that balancing. Its kind of meta.

By almost any understanding of our American experiment, the idea of free speech must surely be at the very top of the list of animating principles. Its not the First Amendment alphabetically, after all.

Yes, the country has sometimes honored the ideal more in the breach than in the observance. There were the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798 and the World War I Espionage Act, renewed and extended to include sedition in 1918. Among other things, the act prohibited any disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language about the U.S. government.

Its worth noting that the professor and others endorsing speech ru...

Legalized Pot: What States Hoping for Extra Revenue Get Wrong "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Editors note: Pot is back in the news following Attorney General Jeff Sessionss announcement that federal prosecutors will once again pursue marijuana cases in states where the drug has been legalized. That doesnt sit well with the affected states, which hope to amass additional tax revenue from the pot businesses now legal under state laws.

That leads one WhoWhatWhy contributor to ask: Are they all high?

Here are his musings on the most recent developments and on how policymakers might just be wrong on pot.

Many of us have been there; we plant our vegetable gardens in spring with grand eagerness, too much eagerness when it comes to some vegetables. Like zucchinis.

I planted four zucchini plants one year. Apparently several of my neighbors were just as eager. Come summer, giant green tubers began appearing on my doorstep gifts from those up to their ears in them while I was trying to give away dozens of the damn things myself.

It was a bit like a scene out of Little Shop of Horrors; every time I walked by my garden 10 more had appeared, seemingly overnight.

And thats whats happening now, here in California. This past spring already everyone seemed to have plants growing in their gardens even though plants could not be legally purchased until 2018.

Then came late summer harvest and curing time and it was like the zucchini glut all over again.

Hey, heres some of my crop this year. Take it. I have so much I could never smoke it all, friends would say, as they shoved bulging baggies of the herb in my hands.

And its not just a few old hippies gone wild, either. Everyones jumping in.

We are producing too much, said Hezekiah Allen, executive director of the California Growers Association, at a recent conference. Growers are going to have to scale back. We are on a painful downsizing curve.

But alas the lid is off, the cats out of the bag, and the horses are out the starting gate. The stuff is all over the place. Anyone can buy high-quality clone starter plants on Craigslist for as little as $10. Under the new California law, each household can legally grow up to six plants. And were not talking your fathers pot here. These clones are high-producing, high-THC-level plants. Half a joint will do you. If cared for properly, just one plant can produce a...

Turkey says Syrias Idlib strikes risk wrecking peace talks "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP | Displaced Syrians fleeing the fighting in an area of Idlib, which is one of the deescalation zones
ISTANBUL (AFP)  Turkeys foreign minister on Tuesday accused the Syrian regime of striking moderate opposition forces in Idlib province near the Turkish border, warning it could torpedo talks aimed at ending the war.Ankara is working closely on Syria with Russia and Iran, President Bashar al-Assads main allies, but has stepped up criticism of the regimes behaviour in recent days.

Regime forces are striking moderate opposition with the pretext of fighting against Al-Nusra (Front), Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by the official Anadolu news agency, referring to the former Al-Qaeda affiliate.

MevlutCavusoglu

Idlib province is almost entirely controlled by anti-government forces that are dominated by a jihadist outfit known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) consisting mostly of former Nusra fighters.

This attitude would scupper the political solution process, Cavusoglu said.

The parties that will come together in Sochi should refrain from any action that could threaten the talks, he warned.

Russia is hoping to hold a Syria peace congress in its Black Sea resort of Sochi on January 29-30.

Meanwhile, US-brokered talks based in Geneva between the regime and the opposition are also going forward, albeit at a stuttering pace.

A previous attempt in November to convene talks in Sochi failed due to disagreements between the prospective participants.

Turkey says it will oppose any talks involving the Kurdish militia of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which Ankara views as a terror group.

In 2016, Ankara and Moscow brokered a fragile ceasefire in certain areas which has been bolstered by the negotiations in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

Both Damascus and the rebel factions regularly accuse one another of violating the ceasefire in the de-escalation zones, including in Idlib.

A likely future sticking point between Russia and Turkey is the fate of Assad, who Ankara has vehemently opposed throughout the conflict.

Wicker Reclining Patio Chair - If your church chairs are due for replacement, you can tell. It's no secret that worn out seating isn't comfortable. They reflect to a church and are unappealing, as well as structurally unsound. Structurally seating that is compromised can give way at any time, damaging a salesman member or potentially embarrassing.

When purchasing church seats, caliber is non-negotiable; it is almost always far better to invest in a couple of pops of quality chairs that will endure for many years to come instead of purchase a room full of inexpensive chairs which will start to fall apart at the seams in the moment they are first used. You get exactly what you pay for in regards to seating. As they will last longer than quality chairs while great quality seats may not be economical, they provide a far greater worth. Investing in chairs that are great will also offer your congregation a more comfortable environment and an improved worship experience.

It can be difficult in the event the church is already financially overwhelmed by other obligations to obtain new church seats. Fortunately, there are a number of tips which you can use even in the face of a church funding that is tight to ensure that you can buy quality church chairs to your congregation.

It seems like there wont be another Mickey Mouse copyright extension act "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

advocates of a new copyright term extension bill wouldnt be able to steamroll opponents the way they did 20 years ago. Any term extension proposal would face a well-organized and well-funded opposition with significant grassroots support.

After the SOPA fight, Hollywood likely knows that the public would fight back, wrote Daniel Nazer, an attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, in an email to Ars. I suspect that Big Content knows it would lose the battle and is smart enough not to fight.

I havent seen any evidence that Big Content companies plan to push for another term extension, Nazer added. This is an election year, so if they wanted to get a big ticket like that through Congress, you would expect to see them laying the groundwork with lobbying and op-eds.

Of course, copyright interests might try to slip a copyright term extension into a must-pass bill in hopes opponents wouldnt notice until it was too late. But Rose doesnt think that would work.

North Korea Avoids Nuclear Issue, Nears Deal on Olympics "IndyWatch Feed War"

North Korea said it was willing to send a delegation to the Olympics in Pyeongchang

Jan. 9, 2018 4:08 a.m. ET

SEOULSouth Korea sought unsuccessfully to raise the Norths nuclear program  during bilateral talks, though the two sides appeared close to an agreement for Pyongyang to participate in next months Winter Olympics, fueling cautious hope for a thaw in relations.

The face-to-face discussions on Tuesday at the demilitarized zone that divides the peninsula were the two Koreas first since December 2015, and came after months of soaring tensions stemming from Pyongyangs nuclear-weapons development.

North Korea said it was willing to send a delegation, including athletes, a taekwondo demonstration team, high-level officials, supporters and journalists, to the Olympics in the South Korean ski resort of Pyeongchang, said Chun Haesung, a member of Seouls negotiating team. The North also indicated a preparedness to resolve geopolitical problems through negotiations, he added.

South Korean officials in Seoul briefed by representatives at the talks said the Norths involvement in the Olympics wasnt yet assured as of Tuesday afternoon.

But a deal on Olympic participation appeared close. Cho Myoung-gyon, the Souths Unification Minister, told his North Korean counterpart earlier in the day of a strong desire to see peace and reconciliation between North and South Korea, and said he believed the Pyeongchang Games would be a peace Olympics.

As negotiators arrived on a frigid winter morning, Ri Son Gwon, the Norths lead representative, said the two sides should present the people with a precious New Years gift.

There is a saying that a journey taken by two lasts longer than one traveled alone, he said.

South Korean officials said they had sought a resumption of family reunions for those separated from their loved ones by the 1950-53 Korean War. There was no word as of Tuesday afternoon on whether the North had accepted the proposal.

The two Koreas, though, agreed to reopen a military-to-military communication line in the Yellow Sea starting Wednesday, a government official in Seoul said....

UK Against Fluoridation "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Paul Connett PhD
Episode Description
Recently, Paul Connett and his wife, both experts on the deadly substance fluorine, went to Washington to testify in the EPA hearings on water fluoridation. They drove for hours from upstate New York to Washington, and were put on the agenda to testify as to the science and effects of fluoride. When they were scheduled to testify, they were told that they had THREE MINUTES to talk, and no more would be allotted, although there was ample time in the schedule for speakers to allow them to speak longer. Any dissent, any mention of the actual science behind the opposition to water fluoridation was completely silenced and suppressed, showing that the EPA is NOT a science-driven agency, but a political agency driven by imperatives different from protecting the environment and population of the United States. Time for this agency to change administrators and/or be abolished, as it is NOT serving its stated purpose, rather just the opposite.

Judge Paul Michel is Not So Retired; Helps the Patent Trolls Lobby Critique His Former Employer "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Retirement money is not enough to keep Michel from intervening as an outsider with powerful connections

Judge Paul Redmond MichelSummary: As the new year begins (and people return from holiday) outlines of Federal Circuit cases are published (3 of them yesterday) and Paul Michel rears his head again (he still meddles by public criticism, wielding influence to impact the courts direction in absentia)

THE Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) improved a lot last year. We are very pleased with its work under the new lead (after Rader left in disgrace). Last year it consistently rejected software patents. Its pretty incredible because only a few years prior to that the opposite was true (under Rader and before Alice).

A very detailed breakdown by Ropes & Gray LLPs Scott A. McKeown has just been published. He calls it 2017 CAFC Guidance; its fairly objective and reasonably OK. But watch this advice (how to trick examiners);

Patent prosecutors navigate complex USPTO rules and seemingly esoteric examinational requirements to procure patent rights. In doing so, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP) does not have the full force and effect of law. Nevertheless, patent examiners (rarely trained lawyers) adhere to their interpretation of the Manual requirements. To budge examiners off of entrenched, legal positions, savvy prosecutors will keep a trained eye on the Federal Circuit for help.

Patent examiners who read this will hopefully take note; this is how legal firms view you

A similar breakdown was posted by Dan Bagatell at Law 360. Its titled Fed. Circ.s 2017 Patent Decisions: A Statistical Analysis. Much of it is behind paywal...

The HP Spectre x360 15 is the most powerful laptop hybrid in its class thanks to its configuration "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

HP claims the Spectre x360 15 is the most powerful convertible that you will be able to buy in the future

When youre buying a convertible, there is always some compromise that you will end up making but with Intels Kaby Lake-R processors, where dual-core processors have transformed into quad-core chips, the HP Spectre x360 15 has taken the opportunity to provide future buyers with the most powerful machine in its class right now.

Normally, you cannot say that hybrids are powerful but the HP Spectre x360 15 is taking a different step, but it is going to be in the right direction. It features a 15.6-inch 4K touchscreen display, with the company saying that it is going to be targeted towards creative professionals and regular professionals. While the GPU is not powerful enough to play modern AAA gaming titles, there is one specific port that will allow you to get the most out of your gaming sessions.

A Thunderbolt 3 will allow support for an eGPU, which when connected to the notebook/hybrid will allow you to connect a desktop graphics card. Battery life is also expected to be insane on this machine because the 84Wh battery according to HP can provide you up to 13.5 hours of life, but that will also depend on what youll be doing on this.

We obviously cannot expect a cheap price tag if you look at the hardware below but pricing and availability will only be known starting March 2018.

Hardware specifications

  • Intel 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R (15-watt) or Kaby Lake-G (65-watt) CPUs
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX150 or AMD Radeon RX Vega M GPUs
  • 15.6-inch 4K display
  • Up to 16GB RAM
  • Up to 1TB PCIe SSD
  • 4.62 pounds (NVIDIA) or 4.72 pounds (AMD)
  • 84Wh battery, with up to 13.5 hours (NVIDIA) or 12 hours (AMD) battery life
  • One (NVIDIA) or two (AMD) Type-C USB ports that support Thunderbolt 3

GUNNEDAH could have fluoride in its water by 2020 after Gunnedah Shire Council (GSC) commenced the process to fluoridate the towns water supply.

The decision to accept a proposal to add fluoride to the water supply was passed in December when council resolved to write to NSW Health to commence the water fluoridation process.

GSCs infrastructure services acting director Daniel Noble said the council will continue to investigate the best way to implement the water fluoridation project.

As per council resolution, council has written to NSW Health requesting approval to commence fluoridation of the Gunnedah water supply in accordance with section six of the fluoridation of public water supplies act, Mr Noble said.

In preparation for approval, the council will continue to investigate best practice for planning and implementing the fluoridation project, and refine the planning and construction documentation required to build the fluoride dosing station and associated infrastructure.

Fluoridation of the Gunnedah water supply is expected to commence in 2020.

1 in 4 fathers don't live with their kids "IndyWatch Feed World"

Over the last 20 years, I've spent a good deal of time working with kids from the inner city. Through this interaction, I've grown accustomed to the fact that biological fathers are virtually non-existent in the homes of the children I know. One might say I've even grown a bit numb to this sad reality at times. But my numbness thawed a bit recently while having a startling conversation with a handful of kids. They explained, quite matter-of-factly, that the offspring of their fathers numbered in the upper teens.

MANILA, Philippines  Recent reports from Chinese state media that one of the Manila-claimed reefs in the Spratly Islands has been transformed into an airbase is not news, Malacaang said Tuesday.

Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television had released aerial images of Fiery Cross or Kagitingan Reef show that the artificial island now functions as a fortified airbase with a hospital and military installations.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, however, said that China has not yet breached its good faith commitment not to reclaim new islands.

Every time a bell rings an airport gets more subsidies "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I woke up yesterday to this headline on the front page of my local paper:

Dispatch headline.jpg

The operative word here is, of course, "giving" with very little comparatively in return to show for it. My hometown of Brainerd just finished a major project to provide sewer and water to the airport, one that, even if it had gone well (it didn't) could hardly have been justified by any financial analysis we could have done (we didn't do any).

As a form of therapy, perhaps penance, I've written about this project many times. Almost exactly two years ago, I put together a list of questions we should be asking as we prepared to undertake a project substantially larger in size than our entire tax levy (it's a massive project for us). You can guess how many of these questions we stopped to consider before plowing ahead. (Hint: Given an over/under of 1, take the under.)

  • What do we estimate this investment will create in new revenue to the city over the next two decades? What other costs (police, fire, infrastructure, etc.) are associated with obtaining those revenue streams? Does this make any financial sense?
  • What long term obligations are we assuming by agreeing to this project? We obviously now must maintain all this new pipe, but what else are we committing future councils to?
  • Beyond getting the project built -- which is the objective of those promoting it -- what does success look like for the city? Is it an increase in the tax base? Is it a number of new jobs? What is success and how will we know we've achieved it? What are those measurements and who is doing the measuring/reporting?
  • In addition to committing this money and building this project, are there other things we need to do to ensure success? Are we prepared to do these things? Will future councils find it easy or difficult to continue to do these things?
  • What is failure -- what is the worst-case outcome once this project is completed -- and how would that impact us? In other words, what is our potential downside risk, how likely is that to happen and w...

Dangers of Sodium Fluoride in Toothpaste "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Q.: Is it true that sodium fluoride in toothpaste is bad for you? James

KLAUS FERLOW REPLIES:
Dangers of Sodium Fluoride in ToothpasteAbsolutely, yes! Sodium fluoride is derived from hydrofluoric acid which is produced by a reaction between sulphuric acid and fluorspar, an ore rich in calcium fluoride, which is a toxic chemical. In fact, fluoride is the main ingredient in rat poison. The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never approved any fluoride product designed for human ingestion and ironically it has been shown not to reduce cavities.

Scientists are, on the other hand, finding links between fluoride and arthritis, allergic reactions, cancer and dental fluorosis (fluoride poisoning) which can result in darkened or mottled teeth, erosion of the tooth enamel, compromised bone structure and other problems including learning disabilities, kidney disease and brain lesions. On average only 50% of the fluoride we take in each day is excreted through the kidneys with the remainder accumulating in our bones, pineal gland and other tissues. In the event of kidney damage, fluoride accumulation will increase and with it the likelihood of further harm. When swallowed, fluoride may cause Crohns disease.

Fluoride is especially dangerous to small children who may tend to swallow toothpaste during or after brushing teeth. Many toothpaste manufacturers include the warning Not for children under the age of six years on their products.

 Rather look for a herbal toothpaste that does not contain fluoride!

Tea-drinkers risk fluoride-damaged bones and more, studies shows "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

NEWS PROVIDED BY

New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc.
Jan 08, 2018, 10:11 ET

NEW YORK, Jan. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Some teas contain more fluoride than EPA allows in public water supplies, which can do skeletal damage, according to research published in Environmental Pollution (Das, et al. 12/2017), reports the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF)

It's undisputed that excessive fluoride ingestion can cause many adverse health effects, not just to bones.

Tea plants (Camellia sinensis) absorb fluoride from soil and air then released from 1.47 to 6.9 milligrams fluoride per liter (mg/L) when brewed, reports Das' research team.

"It can be predicted that long-term consumption of copious quantities of traditional tea might increase the chances of fluorosis in the consumers," they report.

Fluoride from tea, alone, has reportedly caused skeletal fluorosis, an arthritic-type disease that most US physicians aren't trained to diagnose and consumers aren't informed about.

EPA caps fluoride water contamination at 4 mg/L to protect against skeletal fluorosis. But an EPA-requested review of fluoride toxicology research (NRC 2006) revealed 4 mg/L doesn't protect bones. The level must be lowered some say to as close to zero as possible.

Additionally, Waugh et al. brewed 54 different brands of tea to find  fluoride levels reaching up to 6.1 mg/L.  Waugh concludes that individuals' total fluoride intake "could readily exceed the levels known to cause chronic fluoride intoxication." Heart, liver, kidneys, endocrine and nervous systems are also at risk, they caution.

Attorney Paul Beeber, NYSCOF President says, "Without determining  constituents' total fluoride intake from foods, medicines, dental products, etc., as advised by JV Kumar (formerly NYS DoH),  legislators, lobbied by rich and powerful special interest groups, often pass fluoridation laws quietly to avoid confrontation with science-savvy voters opposed to fluoridation as happened in California, Arkansas and New York State. Fluoridation is doing more harm than good," says Beeber.

Alarmingly, some studies found 9 mg/L fluoride in brewed tea.

Beeber says, "No one disputes that excessive fluoride is bad. Local market basket analyses of commonly consumed foods and beverages must be calculated before ever considering water fluoridation. And, New York State's water fluoridation-protection law must be repealed to enable individuals' to manage their own fluoride intake."

USDA provides fluoride content of some common foods.

Many children already ingest and absorb above the recommended daily dose of fluoride from toothpaste alone.

.
Reports have been circulating over the past hour throughout Gaza that Al-Alami was the victim of an assassination attempt. Arab media reported that he was shot point blank by an unknown assailant, and that doctors are currently fighting for his life. Sources in Gaza, however, doubt the validity of these reports.

Al-Alami is a long-term fixture of Hamas leadership in the Strip, and has previously served as a Hamas representative in Iran. He has participated in all Hamas talks with the international community, including but not limited to Palestinian reconciliation, the cease-fire during the 2014 Gaza war and talks over captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. He is known for operating under the radar, avoiding public appearances and the media.

Al-Alami sustained serious wounds to his leg in 2014 following an Israeli strike on his house. Hamas did not report it at the time and quietly facilitated his departure to Turkey, where he received medical care and convalesced for several months before returning.

SBC Portfolio Holder Demoted to Ceremonial Rle

  • an In My View opinion-piece by NIGEL WARD, commenting on one aspect of the fall-out from the first Full Council meeting of 2018.

~~~~~
At the Full Council meeting of Scarborough Borough Council on Monday 8th January 2018, the first of the year, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning & Transformation Councillor Joe PLANT [Con.], the sole nominee for the 2018/19 Mayoralty, was elected over dissent from the opposition benches. Say a warm welcome to our next Mayor, Councillor Joe PLANT.
It has been known for sometime that the Conservative Group was struggling to identify a willing candidate for the rle, which has been largely discredited in recent years and not only by the Enquirers successful campaign to expose former Mayor, Councillor and Alderman Peter JACONELLI [Con.], Jimmy SAVILEs co-offender and only serious contender for the ignominious title of Britains Most Vile Paedophile.
2015/16 Mayor Councillor Simon GREEN [Con.] was an unmitigated PR disaster and the present incumbent, Councillor Martin SMITH [Con.] has also failed to master the only democratically relevant duty of the Mayoralty chairing Full Council meetings.
Local politics buffs know that the Mayoralty is, in fact, a blind alley in terms of power and influence, since it deprives the incumbent of any influential Committee Chairship (with its concomitant Special Responsibility Allowance). That ridiculous brass chain may as well have a leaden ball attached to it, anchoring the poor poop in the Santa suit to a dreary round of civic tea-parties and departure lounge presentations far from the cut and thrust of the Leaders acid tongue.
For a serving Cabinet Portfolio Holder to be relieved of his executive powers and pastured out to the Mayoralty in what could easily be his final year on the Council is a significant demotion normally reserved for party elders who are approaching the 16 years of service necessary to achieve Alderman nomination, normally ratified at a Special Meeting in the Council year following retirement from the Council.
Councillor Joe PLANT [Con.] was first elected to Scarborough Borough Council in May 2003, so his Alderman qualification will coincide with the May 2019 local elections. In the May 2013 and May 2...
Infamous diversity memo author James Damore is suing Google for discriminating against white males "IndyWatch Feed World"
Ex-Google engineer James Damore filed a complaint in California state court, seeking class certification for his employment discrimination case against the tech giant, claiming Google is biased against conservative viewpoints, men, and Caucasians, in violation of state employment laws. Damore wrote an internal memo about the biological reasons women aren't engineers that sparked national outrage and got him fired from his job last August. He's petitioned the Santa Clara County Superior Court on behalf of similarly situated plaintiffs, or "all employees of Google discriminated against (i) due to their perceived conservative political views" in the last four years, "due to their male gender" and/or "due to their Caucasian race" in the last year. He is joined in the complaint by David Gudeman, a software engineer who worked at Google in Mountain View, California, for three years, left in December 2016, and is currently writing a book between temporary engineering jobs, per his LinkedIn. The duo argues: Throughout the Class Periods, and in violation of California law, Google employees who expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace and relevant to Google's employment policies and its business, such as "diversity" hiring policies, "bias sensitivity," or "social justice," were/are singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google, in violation of their legal rights.
Google sued by an ex-engineer for discriminating against conservative white men "IndyWatch Feed Tech"
Anti-Diversity Memo Author Sues Google For Discrimination Against White Conservative Men
A former Google senior software engineer who was fired by the search giant over his controversial 3,300 words anti-diversity memo filed a class-action lawsuit against the company on Monday in Santa Clara Superior Court in Northern California for its discriminatory behavior against white males with conservative political leanings.
Another ex-employee from Google, David Gudeman, who is a co-plaintiff in the lawsuit is supporting Damores cause. The lawsuit seeks non-monetary, monetary, and punitive compensations.
Damore was fired after writing a 10-page memo titled Googles Ideological Echo Chamber: How bias clouds our thinking about diversity and inclusion that questioned companys diversity policies. Even though it was circulated internally initially in July, it gained attention in August when Motherboard published the memo, saying the anti-diversity memo had gone internally viral at the Mountain View, Calif.-based technology company.
Damores memo which claimed that the inequality in payment of wages existed between men and women was because the latter was biologically less capable than the former caused a tumult in the tech industry. Calling the memo as offensive and harmful, Google soon fired Damore from the company.
According to the lawsuit, Google employees who expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace and relevant to Googles employment policies and its business, such as diversity hiring policies, bias sensitivity, or social justice were/are singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google, in violation of their legal rights.
The suit further accuses Google of employing illegal hiring quotas to fill its desired percentages of women and favored minority candidates, and claims managers who are unable to meet these quotas are openly shamed.
San Francisco-based Dhillon Law Group who filed the lawsuit on behalf of Damore and Gudeman said, Damore, Gudeman, and other class members were ostracized, belittled, and punished for their heterodox political views, and for the added sin of their birth circumstances of being Caucasian and/or males. Googles open hostility for conservative thought is paired with invidious discrimination on the basis of race and gender, barred by law.
Folding Single Bed Chair "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"
71XVhuFIpmL SL1500
Folding Single Bed Chair - There are a few essential parts of furniture that every business needs: a great office chair to sit down in, reception chairs for the guests to wait in, a table to fit in, and conference chairs to sit in during meetings. Whether you are working in a fortune 500 company or a small start almost every company needs a good set of seminar chairs to complete their meeting area. A meeting area or A seminar room is a place where both workers and customers meet to discuss ideas and strategies for your small business, and sometimes these meetings can last for hours on end. Whether it's your clients which are going to get the most use from your seminar chairs or your workers, you ought to be certain that they are comfortable while seated. Conference chairs also provide you with the chance to present your meeting room a appeal and also the capability to communicate your organization's culture. As with any other piece of timing furniture and attention should be given to what sort of convention chair will be excellent for your business.
The first point to keep in mind when purchasing a pair of seminar chairs is the overall atmosphere of your furniture and your organization. Does your office have a design that is modern for it or is it more conventional in appearance? It is important to fully understand the character of your business as well, for instance, if you're a law office that's famous for its professionalism and traditionalism, you would not wish to buy a pair of modern looking conference chairs to your meeting area. You would probably need to go for a seat with genuine leather and a timber trim to finish your appearance. Be certain to match your entire office with a styling that is similar, if your furniture and style are mismatched that could come off as inexpensive and unprofessional. Furniture truly has the ability to shape the way so it is important for them to leave with a positive impression that your guests perceive your own business.
After specifying the next step is to pick in. Leather is the most popular decision to go with and has the broadest selection of styles to choose from. It's also a choice, simple to clean, and gives off a feeling of professionalism. The only drawback to leather is the fact that it's pricey; it may be best to go for a leather alternative that is cheaper if you will use your conference space. Vinyl is yet another chosen choice because it's usually a bit cheaper in cost than its leather counterpart looks almost indistinguishable. For a more contemporary appearance, look at a mesh design or a fabric with a pa...
Russia introduced tough new legislation that dramatically increases the sentences faced by terrorists and terror supporters. Recruiters and contractors for terrorism now face between eight years imprisonment with heavy fines to life imprisonment, according to Russia Today. They can be sentenced to life in prison even if no one dies as a result of their activities.
Prior to the rules change, the maximum sentence for recruiters and contractors was 10 years.
The legislation also introduces a new offense of spreading terrorist propaganda, defined as possession of materials or information, which forms [the] terrorist ideology of an individual. It will carry the same sentence as terrorism justification or public calls for terrorism, both of which are punishable by two to seven years in prison.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the bill into law at the end of 2017.
Russia faces an imminent terror threat. In December 2017, Russian police foiled a terrorist attack targeting the iconic Kazan Cathedral in Saint Petersburg with American help. Putin called his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump to thank him for the CIAs help in halting the plot.
Israel and Iran collaborate to exploit the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline "IndyWatch Feed War"
In 1968, when Israel and the Iranian imperial monarchy enjoyed excellent relationships, the two countries set up a joint company (the EAPC) to manage the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline After the toppling of the Shah and the establishment of the Islamic Republic, it appears that Israel nationalized the pipeline. In 2015, a Swiss Tribunal fixed the compensation due from Israel to Iran at 1.1. billion dollars. But this sum was never paid. Today, the pipeline has a second pipe parallel to the first. (...)
MyLiFi: A smart lamp that beams broadband to your laptop "IndyWatch Feed Tech"
Meet MyLifi, a desktop lamp that delivers secure internet via LEDs
Oledcomm, a French company, debuted the first-ever LiFi powered lightbulb that delivers super-fast internet via infrared light for consumer use at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas.
Oledcomms MyLifi, is an industrial-style desktop lamp that provides secure, wireless and radio-wave-free Internet access to any compatible device through the data-transferring power of LEDs. It uses a new technology called Li-Fi or Light Fidelity, which allows devices to connect to each other via LED lights.
Considered as an alternative to the traditional Wi-Fi technology, MyLifi connects your device to the internet using invisible LEDs and a special dongle. The data is transferred between the bulb and the dongle via invisible, blinking LEDs, which means the lamp doesnt even need to be on in order to connect. It modulates and decrypts light signals transmitted from an LED light bulb and converts it into data that your device can understand.
The lamp delivers low latency, fast and reliable internet to any connected device, according to the company. It guarantees a top download speed of 23Mbps, and upload speed of 10Mbps. The lamp comes with one dongle and can be pre-ordered now on Indiegogo for $840.
For Madams Only: Facebook groups and the politics of migrant domestic work in Egypt "IndyWatch Feed Politics.eu"
Despite endless talk of its democratising potential, Facebook does not automatically give Maids and Madams an equal voice.
Mops getting ready for insurrection. Picture by: paolobarzman / Flickr.com Some rights reserved. (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)In July last year, the Facebook user Princess Doo Woo copied and pasted a list of  OUR SIX DEMANDS under every post in the public group Maids and Nannies in Egypt.  The demands, written by a coalition of middle/upper class housewives, include a limit on migrant domestic workers salaries, the freedom to set any tasks and working hours within that salary, and zero tolerance for disobedience. Borrowing from the radical language of social justice movements, these Madams outlined their noble battle (which is their duty as Egyptians) against the evil mafia who continue to exploit them: the Maids.
Since then, the campaign has taken off and a group was established called No Dollars For You!!! that only accepts Madams as members. Its hard to take seriously any movement run by someone who calls herself Princess Doo Woo and blaming migrant domestic workers for Egypts dollar crash is evidently absurd. But scapegoating minorities at times of instability is all too common, and these social media discourses about domestic work reveal a complex intersection of class, race and gender politics in Egypt.
And by "Maid", they mean women who are working class or foreign
When we commented on one of the posts sharing these demands, we were immediately challenged to prove (how is unclear) whether we were Madams or Maids. Maids opinions do not matter. And by "Maid", they mean women who are working class or foreign. In one post, Nina, an Indonesian domestic worker, suggested that the demands were unreasonable and dehumanised Asian migrants. The Madams were horrified. Do you realise what you are saying? demanded one, Do you know you are speaking to a Madam and not to your friend?  Another seemed particularly upset: what the hell is this I wouldnt pay these helpers 10 Egyptian pounds a year no Madam should accept such behaviour....
Devices: When Allegations of Software Patent Infringement/s Can Result in Theft (Confiscation) of Physical Devices or Embargo "IndyWatch Feed Tech"
Theft
Summary: The embargo dilemma and how bad things have gotten in Europe and North America; products get stolen and booths raided before proper justice is concluded (complete with appeals, expert witnesses and so on)
SANCTIONS against distribution of code are hard, especially in the age of the Internet. Even binaries, not just code (proprietary and Free/libre software, respectively). Software in general is difficult to police. Attempts to ban export of encryption to particular countries, for instance, were never successful. These were farcical at best and they vividly demonstrated politicians inability to grasp what software is (the notion of export is itself inapplicable in such a context).
Over a decade ago we wrote about how codec patents (basically software patents from the likes of MPEG-LA) were used to raid booths and steal products of companies (in bulk). It was despicable and media did pay attention at the time. It happened in Europe. Later it happened in the US as well, thanks to the likes of CES and ITC.
Over a decade ago we wrote about how codec patents (basically software patents from the likes of MPEG-LA) were used to raid booths and steal products of companies (in bulk)We are particularly interested in how ITC sanctions export/import on the basis of software. A decade ago Microsoft used the ITC to embargo a rival whose mice it alleged to have infringed patents (hardware), but what happens in the post-Alice age in the US? Can mere allegations result in embargo or even worse confiscation? Its like controversial civil forfeiture on the basis of patents alone (and likely baseless accusations/assumptions).
We arent saying that infringement should never result in action. We are not insinuating that all patents are bunk. Consider this new story, which involves hardware and patents. Skybell Technologies, it says, has filed a lawsuit claiming its Santa Monica competitor, Ring, copied its technology and is profiting from advertising and marketing techniques rather than innovative software and hardware.
No recalls or confiscations but an actual legal process. Like that followed in Cisco v Arista.
Barnes & Noble Reports Holiday Revenues Down "IndyWatch Feed Tech"
Barnes & Noble reported their sales from the 2017 holiday quarter, and the news is not good.
B&N today reported holiday sales for the nine-week holiday period ending December 30, 2017. Total sales for the holiday period were $953 million, declining 6.4% as compared to the prior year. Comparable store sales also declined 6.4% for the holiday period, while online sales declined 4.5%.
Entering December, the Company was encouraged by the comparable store sales improvements throughout the second quarter and into November. However, sales trends softened in December, primarily due to lower traffic.
The Company's book business declined 4.5%, outperforming the overall comparable store sales performance. Declines in the gift, music and DVD categories accounted for nearly half of the comparable store sales decrease. The Company said it remains focused on executing its strategic turnaround plan, which includes an aggressive expense management program.
The keywords are "aggressive expense management program," which translates to "lowering" the cost of employees, and closing and downsizing stores.
Tech Companies Meet EC to Discuss Removal of Pirate & Illegal Content "IndyWatch Feed Tech"
Thousands perhaps millions of pieces of illegal content flood onto the Internet every single day, a problem thats only increasing with each passing year.
In the early days of the Internet very little was done to combat the problem but with the rise of social media and millions of citizens using it to publish whatever they like not least terrorist propaganda and racist speech governments around the world are beginning to take notice.
Of course, running parallel is the multi-billion dollar issue of intellectual property infringement. Eighteen years on from the first wave of mass online piracy and the majority of popular movies, TV shows, games, software and books are still available to download.
Over the past couple of years and increasingly in recent months, there have been clear signs that the EU in particular wishes to collectively mitigate the spread of all illegal content from ISIS videos to pirated Hollywood movies with assistance from major tech companies.
Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter are all expected to do their part, with the looming stick of legislation behind the collaborative carrots, should they fail to come up with a solution.
To that end, five EU Commissioners Dimitris Avramopoulos, Elbieta Biekowska, Vra Jourov, Julian King and Mariya Gabriel will meet today in Brussels with representatives of several online platforms to discuss progress made in dealing with the spread of the aforementioned material.
In a joint statement together with EC Vice-President Andrus Ansip, the Commissioners describe all illegal content as a threat to security, safety, and fundamental rights, demanding a collective response from all actors, including the internet industry.
They note that online platforms have committed significant resources towards removing violent and extremist content, including via automated removal, but more needs to be done to tackle the issue.
This is starting to achieve results. However, even if tens of thousands of pieces of illegal content have been taken down, there are still hundreds of thousands more out there, the Commissioners writes.
And removal needs to be speedy: the longer illegal material stays online, the greater its reach, the more it can spread and grow. Building on the current voluntary approach, more efforts and progress have to be made.
The Commission says it is relying on online platforms such as Google and Facebook to step up and speed up their efforts to tackle these threats quickly and comprehensively. This should include closer cooperation wi...
UK Arrests Six from Neo-Nazi Terror Group "IndyWatch Feed War"
Illustrative picture. (Photo: Creative Commons)Illustrative picture. (Photo: Creative Commons)
British prosecutors charged five men and one woman with membership in National Action, a secretive, far-right group proscribed as a terror organization by the UK in 2016.
National Action, the first neo-Nazi group to be banned in the United Kingdom, was founded in 2013. Its ideology focuses on race war, encouraging violence against minorities and against the British state. It was banned in 2016 after the group publicly backed Thomas Mair, the far-right extremist who assassinated Labour MP Jo Cox.
Extremism experts such as Julie Ebner, a research fellow at the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, argue that far-right terrorist groups like National Action and Islamist organizations such as ISIS exist in a symbiotic relationship. Since far-right terrorists argue Islam is waging a war against the West and Islamists argue that the West is at war with Islam, the atrocities of each extremist group serve to justify the narrative of the other.
The six suspects were arrested in coordinated raids on January 3 and slated to be charged charged with being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 namely on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation (National Action) contrary to sec 11 of the Terrorism Act, said a police spokesperson.
David Davis attacks EUs damaging no-deal Brexit planning "IndyWatch Feed War"
Ministers letter to PM says Brussels guidance to companies is threat to UK interests
Financial Times (FT)
David Davis has consulted lawyers over the EUs preparations for a no-deal Brexit, claiming Brussels planning is harming British business and breaching the UKs rights as a member state.
In a letter sent to Theresa May, UK prime minister, last month and seen by the Financial Times, the Brexit secretary pointed to EU measures that could jeopardise existing contracts or force British companies to decamp to the continent if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
Mr Davis said in the letter that he would ask the European Commission to revise its guidance to business so it highlights the potential for a future transition and trade deal.
But the demand drew accusations of hypocrisy from some British MPs, given that UK ministers have emphasised the extent of their own no-deal planning.
The government is implicitly threatening a no-deal scenario, said Pat McFadden, a Labour member of the Brexit select committee. It should come as no surprise that the EU is also preparing for this possibility.
Mr Davis said in his letter to Mrs May that the guidance from EU agencies sees the UK becoming a third country when it leaves the bloc in March 2019, without referring to the British governments hopes of sealing a two-year transition period or trade deal.
Mr Davis said this treated the UK differently from other member states, even before it left the bloc, in a way which is frequently damaging to UK interests.
The EU has adopted a number of measures that put agreements or contracts at risk of being terminated in the event of a no deal scenario and/or would require UK companies to relocate to another member state, Mr Davis said.
Singapore uncovers large oil heist at Shells biggest refinery "IndyWatch Feed War"
SINGAPORE (Reuters) Eleven men were charged in a Singapore court on Tuesday in connection with a large-scale oil theft at Shells biggest refinery, while police said they were investigating six other men arrested in a weekend raid.
Police in the island-state said on Tuesday they had detained 17 men, whose ages ranged from 30 to 63, and seized millions of dollars in cash and a small tanker during their investigations into theft at the Pulau Bukom industrial site, which sits just south of Singapores main island.
Oil refining and shipping have contributed significantly to Singapores rising wealth during the past decades. But the case underlines the challenges the industry faces in a region that has become a hotspot for illegal oil trading.
The investigation began after Shell contacted the authorities in August 2017, police said in a news release. After extensive investigations and probes, the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department and Police Coast Guard launched a series of simultaneous raids across Singapore, which led to the arrests.
Nine Singaporeans were immediately charged in the theft, of which eight were employees of the Singapore subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, court documents showed. Two Vietnamese nationals were charged with receiving stolen goods on a small tanker named Prime South (IMO: 9452804), the documents showed.
Shell confirmed on Tuesday that eight of the 11 men charged were current or former employees at Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd.
Shipping data from Thomson Reuters Eikon showed the Prime South had been shipping fuel between Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Singapore for the past 30 days.
GRANDER SCHEME?
Tuesdays cases could be just the first insight into a grander scheme.
The charges seen so far allege three incidents of gasoil theft: on Nov. 21, 2017, of more than 2,322 tonnes valued at S$1.277 million ($958,564.78); and on Jan. 5 and 7 this year of a combined 2,062 tonnes of gasoil, valued at S$1.126 million.
The apex court modified its November 30, 2016 order by which it had made playing of the anthem mandatory in cinema halls before the screening of a film.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said a 12-member inter-ministerial committee, set up by the Centre, would take a final call on the playing of national anthem in cinemas.
The bench, also comprising Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, said the committee should comprehensively look into all the aspects relating to the playing of the national anthem and allowed the petitioners to make representations before the panel.
The bench made it clear that the exemption granted earlier to disabled persons from standing in the cinema halls when the national anthem is being played will remain in force till the committee takes a decision.
Intel chief says chip flaw damage contained by industry "IndyWatch Feed War"
AFP
AFP | Intel chief Brian Krzanich said there is no information to suggest any loss of data from the so-called Meltdown and Spectre flaws
LAS VEGAS (AFP)  Intel chief Brian Krzanich said Monday the impact of a recently discovered vulnerability in computer chips has been limited due to remarkable collaboration by the tech industry.Krzanich took the unusual step of addressing the security issue as he delivered a keynote ahead of the opening of the huge Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, an industry event expected to draw some 180,000 people from the sector.
As yet, Krzanich said, there is no information to suggest any loss of data from the so-called Meltdown and Spectre flaws and he added, We are working tirelessly to make sure it stays that way.
The Intel chief executive made his most high-profile public comments since the release of research highlighting vulnerabilities affecting the chips powering most modern PCs and many mobile devices.
The collaboration of so many companies (to mitigate the threat) is truly remarkable, Krzanich said.
Security is job number one for Intel and our industry. The primary focus of our discussions (on this issue) is to keep our customers data safe.
Researchers at Google showed how a hacker could exploit the flaw to get passwords, encryption codes and more, even though there have been no reports of any attacks using the vulnerability.
Some analysts have warned that the threat is unique because it is an issue affecting hardware used in many computing systems.
Krzanich said updates will be available for 90 percent of its products in the coming days and the for the rest by the end of January, and urged all computer users to update as quickly as possible.
Most of what I'm planning will require some doing and high tech razzle-dazzle and it might work. Then again, maybe not. President Trump signed a broadband development bill that will apparently encourage fiber optics and bandwidth in even the most rural parts of the USA. From what I've read, it's intended to become part of the trillion dollar infrastructure bill if that ever passes Congress. Will that bring 'civilization' and bandwidth to the White Wolf Mine? You can read it here. The President is trying to encourage the use of federal land to host towers and to string fiber optics as a matter of policy.
Efforts to find treatments for Alzheimers disease suffered blows in recent days, but many companies, scientists and investors are still optimistic that they can find a way to treat the memory-robbing disease, which affects roughly 5.5 million Americans.
Axovant Sciences Ltd. on Monday shuttered development for a once-promising Alzheimers drug, an announcement that came days after Pfizer Inc. said it was giving up on the space entirely.
The mood is definitely negative on anything near-term, [but] there continues to be interest in this space, said Mark Ginestro, a principal for health-care and life sciences strategy at KPMG in San Francisco. Its too big of a market to ignore. People are going to continue to go after it despite the roadblocks.
Roche Holding AG , Biogen Inc., Eli Lilly & Co. and others are still developing therapies. Startups with neuroscience pipelines, like Denali Therapeutics Inc. and Verge Genomics, are attracting funding, and so are early-stage research projects.
During the fiscal year 2017, the National Institutes of Health will have poured an estimated $1.35 billion into Alzheimers disease, almost triple its investment for fiscal year 2013. And Pfizer said it had plans to establish a corporate venture fund focused on neuroscience projects.
How Whales and Dolphins Can Teach Us to Be Less Stupid "IndyWatch Feed War"
Human Wrongs Watch
By Rupert Read*
openDemocray*  For those tens of millions of us who have been watching the extraordinary Blue Planet II, the final programme in the series (which looked at the human-caused threats facing the seas) may have come as both a wake-up call and a disappointment.
Disappointment, at what weve done to this beautiful planet. And perhaps also, disappointment that the BBC didnt look deeply enough into why these harms have happened.
What emerges when we reflect more profoundly in this way?
The background to what were doing to the oceans includes, crucially, this: that the world is possessed by the ideology of possessive individualism, which comes in different varieties: liberal, neoliberal and libertarian.
This possession is utterly disastrous, at a moment when we need to think and act collectively, politically, and as a civilisation, not just as an aggregate of individuals.
What would it mean to really take seriously our identity as a we, our belonging to each other and to our homesour common home? To be us, rather than just a lot of mes?
Central to such a transformation is the nee...
Israel attacked an arms depot of a Syrian army military base near Damascus on Tuesday with jets and ground-to-ground missiles, the Syrian army confirmed. The Syrian army added that their air defense systems prevented three separate strikes, saying that the incident proves Israels support for anti-regime organizations. The Israeli military declined to comment on the matter.
The Syrian opposition-affiliated Qasioun website reported that four Israeli planes carried out the attack on Al-Qutayfah, an eastern suburb of the Syrian capital, through Lebanese airspace. Eyewitnesses report that loud explosions were heard in the area, which is known to host weapons depots where Scud missiles are stored.
According to the Syrian military, several missiles were first launched at 2:40 A.M., followed by two more missiles at 3:04 A.M. and four at 4:14 A.M. The military said the Syrian air defense shot down one missile and the rest fell on one of the Syrian military sites, causing material damage.
On Sunday, the Israeli security cabinet convened for a long meeting on the situation on the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, expressed concerns over developments on the northern front amid Irans growing influence in the region. Israel is also concerned about the replenishment of the Assad regimes missile arsenal, which was almost entirely used up fighting the rebels, and the establishment of Iranian weapons plants in Syria and Lebanon.
On December 2, Syrian state television reported that the Israeli Air Force struck a military base in city of Al-Kiswa, located some 13 kilometers south of Damascus. According to Assad-affiliated media reports, Israel targeted Iranian military bases in the area. Israeli officials declined to comment on the matter.
During that attack, Syrias air-defense system fired missiles at Israeli aircraft, which reportedly launched the attack from Lebanese airspace.
