Keylogger found in Synaptics driver on HP laptops "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

For the second time this year, a security researcher unearthed a keylogger in a driver used on a number of HP laptops. The first time was earlier this year, when Swiss security firm modzero AG discovered a keylogger in Conexant HP audio drivers that stored records of keystrokes in a file in the public folder, unencrypted. This time, the keylogger was spotted by security researcher Michael Myng (aka ZwClose) while rifling through the Synaptics Touchpad More

Android vulnerability allows attackers to modify apps without affecting their signatures "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Among the many Android vulnerabilities patched by Google this December is one that allows attackers to modify apps without affecting their signatures. The danger Although Android applications are self-signed, signature verification is important when updating Android applications. When the user downloads an update of an application, the Android runtime compares its signature with the signature of the original version. If the signatures match, the Android runtime proceeds to install the update, Guard Square researchers explained. More

Will IoT botnets catapult the industry toward security regulation in 2018? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Attackers demonstrated the power of an IoT-fueled botnet in 2016 when the Mirai botnet took down major websites like Reddit, Twitter and GitHub. Despite the damages, no significant changes to the IoT industry occurred. Call Coach Jimmy at 503-395-4142, or check the website: Good morning, Im still reporting on: Worlds First Fusion Plant, 1933 Synopsis: The worlds first tokamak fusion plant is now 50% complete. When it is operational, the experimental fusion plant, called the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, of ITER, will generate 10 times more power than goes into it. Todays old-school fission-based nuclear power plants create heat by splitting large atoms of uranium into smaller ones. The result is that each year, a typical fission nuclear power plant generates about 20 metric tons of used nuclear fuel. Some of this must be encased in glass and safely stored for decades to centuries. But a fusion reactor fuses hydrogen atoms, which are non-toxic and in abundant supply. The experimental ITER plant is meant to prove the feasibility of commercial fusion plants. And unlike fission reactors, fusion is very safe. A fusion plant would simple shut down any time the reaction is disrupted because it takes so much energy to get the fusion reaction going. Hydrogen atoms must be heated to 270 million degrees Farenheit 10 times hotter than the core of the sun. This super-heated stream of plasma is confined inside the donut-shaped reactor by the worlds largest magnets that must be cooled to minus 452 degrees F. as cold as interstellar space. To do that, these magnets are more than 55 feet tall, yet must be manufactured to a tolerance of 1 millimeter. This is a crossection model of the reactor vessel. The ITER plant is a consortium European nations and sits in southern France. The French Alps are in the background. First conceived in 1985 at the Geneva Summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, it didnt begin in earnest until 22 years later in 2007. It was originally scheduled to be completed in 10 years at a cost of $5.6 billion dollars. Support Our Sponsors: - Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. Toby Young is terrified of losing his place at the Tory trough "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

After deciding to completely whitewash a British Medical Journal study linking 120,000 excess deaths with Tory austerity dogma just a few weeks ago (because the BMJ are supposedly not a reliable enough source), the BBC decided to give the sneering Tory fanatic Toby Young a platform to spew a load of anti-Labour bile on the Sunday Politics show.

You may remember Toby Young as the hard-right Tory propagandist who led the Tories for Corbyn campaign in 2015 under the spectacularly misguided delusion that a genuinely left-wing Labour leader would destroy the Labour Party and create a permanent Tory hegemony.

Young doesn't seem to have acknowledged his own idiocy in actively promoting Jeremy Corbyn, and neither has he learned the lesson from the 2017 General Election that hyperbolic anti-Labour smears simply don't work anymore.

Young's latest hyperbolic propaganda attack against the Labour left is to compare the grassroots Labour campaign group Momentum with the Britain First hate mob.

Britain First is a disgusting extreme-right BNP splinter group led by a bunch of criminals with multiple convictions for crimes like harassment, criminal damage, and assault, and in June 2016 one of their supporters brutally murdered the MP Jo Cox.

Momentum is a democratic socialist campaign group within th...

International Direct Action Against French Stag Hunt "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

from Hunt Sabs UK

Hunt Saboteurs Association News Release, 10th December 2017

Hunt Saboteurs from Croydon and Kingston joined the first major international action of its kind that saw nearly 60 Hunt Saboteurs from 6 different countries descend on the notorious Futaie des Amis Stag Hunt in the Foret de Compiegne, Picardy, Northern France. In recent weeks the hunt killed a stag in a garden, despite the home owner begging them not to, and saw one of its own beaters killed by being pierced through the heart by a deers antlers after he had cornered the animal.

Teams of Hunt Saboteurs managed to maintain close contact with the hunt all day, and on three occasions managed to take control of the pack at crucial moments when they were hunting a stag and two hinds, one with her young. The hunts were in complete disarray with the huntsman, Drak, complaining bitterly to the French hunt saboteurs that they had not been able to kill and that stag hunting wasnt barbaric.

Traditionally, stag hunting involves hunting an animal with hounds, to the point of utter exhaustion, then the huntsman stabs the animal in the heart. However, allowing the hounds to tear the animal apart (as in fox hunting) and drowning are also approved methods for a stag hunt to make a kill.

Lee Moon, Press Spokesperson for the Hunt Saboteurs Association, stated: The Hunt Saboteurs Association has over 50 years experience of sabotaging hunts in the UK. When we hear of similar actions happening abroad we are more than happy to lend a hand. Congratulations to the French saboteurs for arranging this successful action and we look forward to working with them again in the near future.

Pentagon To Undergo First Ever Audit After Decades Of Sloppy Accounting And Missing Trillions "IndyWatch Feed World"

pentagon wikimedia

After decades of waste, overpayments, trillions of missing or improperly accounted for dollars, and most recently losing track of 44,000 US soldiersthe Pentagon is about to undergo its first audit in history conducted by 2,400 auditors from independent public accounting firms to conduct reviews across the Army, Navy, Air Force and more  followed by annual audits going forward.

The announcement follows a May commitment by Pentagon comptroller David Norquist, who previously served as the CFO at the Department of Homeland Security when the agency performed its audit. Starting an audit is a matter of driving change inside a bureaucracy that may resist it, Norquist told members of the Armed Services Committee at the time when pressed over whether or not he could get the job done at the DHS.

According to the DoD release:

The audit is massive. It will examine every aspect of the department from personnel to real property to weapons to supplies to bases. Some 2,400 auditors will fan out across the department to conduct it, Pentagon officials said.

It is important that the Congress and the American people have confidence in DoDs management of every taxpayer dollar, Norquist said.

The Pentagon is no stranger to criticism over serious waste and purposefully sloppy accounting.  A DoD Inspector Generals report from 2016 which appears to be unavailable on the DoD website (but fortunately WAS archived)- found that in 2015 alone a staggering $6.5 trillion in funds was unaccounted for out of the Armys budge...

US Senator Shelby Of Alabama: State Deserves Better than Election of Republican Roy Moore; Why Is Trump On Trial In Alabama? Why Roy Moore Cant Wait To Get To Washington? "IndyWatch Feed"

Alabamas senior senator, Republican Richard Shelby, said Sunday the state deserves better than the election of Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, accused of sexual improprieties with teenage girls four decades ago when he was in his 30s. Shelby said the tipping point for him were allegations made by the then-14-year-old, now in her 50s. That was enough for me, he said. (Bredemeier-VOA )

Clearly, US Senator Shelby of Alabama and candidate Moore dont have the same idea of Alabama values. In the video, below, Moore says I think theyre afraid that Im gonna take Alabama values to Washington and I wanna tell you I cant wait. Considering the accusations, one might wonder what he cant wait for in Washington?

After Destroying US-backed ISIS Forces in Syria, Vladimir Putin orders the withdrawal of Russian troops "IndyWatch Feed World"

'If the terrorists again raise their heads, we will deal such blows to them they have never seen,' Russian leader says Vladimir Putin has ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria, Moscow's state news agencies are reporting. The Russian leader made the announcement at the Hemeimeem air base in Syria's coastal province of Latakia, the heartland of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite minority. Accompanied by defence minister Sergey Shoygu, Mr Putin said Russian and Syrian armies had achieved their mission to destroy Isis - "one of the most capable groups of international terrorists" - in just over two years.

Fake Polls Finally Give Up in Alabama, 1931 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Rugged Reserves, home of the solar-powered tactical flashlight with a 100% lifetime guarantee. Call 800-621-7902. Website: Good evening, Im still reporting on: Fake Polls Finally Give Up in Alabama, 1931 Synopsis: Exactly as we predicted two months ago, the fake polling industry, having derived maximal political advantage from its exaggerated skews and fake sampling errors, is now quickly returning to reality to cover for how deliberately biased they have been in the Roy Moore race. The Real Clear Politics polling average today swerved a full point and a half in favor of Republican Roy Moore with Tuesdays election just 3 days away. Yesterday, Moore led by 2-and-a-half points; today he leads by nearly 4 points. Pollsters long ago learned that they can have a significant effect on election outcomes by skewing their polling data to favor one candidate or the other. There are probably hundreds of ways to do this, but the most frequent method is who you poll. For example, if you ask a room full of folks wearing red Make America Great hats who they favored in the 2016 presidential race, you would likely to find very few Hillary Clinton voters. Once the results are duly reported to the media and once they subsequently report these results to the public, you are likely to see a drop in support for Hilary Clinton, in both subsequent public opinion polls, and, importantly the ability to raise money to continue the campaign. However, in order to keep this scheme up year after year, the fake pollsters have discovered they only have to do one thing to avoid exposure publish real polls that are released just a few days before the election. Then, after the election, they can brag about how close they predicted the final outcome. So here you see it the first polls released after the coordinated assault by several accusers of Roy Moore were timed for maximum impact exactly 30 days before election day enough time for the press to shriek about the accusations over and over long enough for those ravings to sink in to the public consciousness for maximum impact. Are California Coastal Wildfires Connected With Global Warming: The Evidence Says No "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

California's coastal mountains have been hit by two major wildfire events, resulting in dozens of deaths and billions of dollars of damage

The first occurred on October 8-9th in the "Wine Country" north of San Francisco.  The second started on December 4th in Ventura County and now has spread south to Los Angeles and San Diego.

A number of political leaders, media outlets, and activist groups have boldly stated that these fires were caused by, enhanced by, or consistent with climate change forced by anthropogenic global warming.

Governor Jerry Brown has made it clear that the fires are a "new normal" forced by global warming.

The NY Times has made the same point:

The climate advocacy group Climate Central talks about climate change "stoking the fires"

And quite honestly, I could easily give you dozens of additional examples of the such claims.  That global warming is a key element driving California coastal fires.

Trumps dangerous vision of the Middle East "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Jonathan Eyal
The Straits Times

It is one thing to shake things up but that does not mean what is likely to follow selective engagement will further the cause of peace in the region.

LONDON Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in Europe today brimming with confidence. The United States has just recognised Jerusalem as Israels capital city, a move which Mr Netanyahu touts as confirmation that his policies are being vindicated, and that developments in the Middle East now increasingly coincide with Israels interests.

To all intents and purposes, therefore, Bibi Netanyahus Europe trip resembles more of a victory lap.

But the Israeli Prime Minister may be rejoicing too soon. What President Donald Trump has done in his decision on Jerusalem is to upend the entire history of Americas Middle East diplomacy. And it may be a harbinger of a new US policy in the region, one which is best termed as selective engagement of a kind which is unlikely to ultimately favour either Israel or the broader cause of peace, but may well endure long after Mr Trump leaves the White House.

Notwithstanding all his melodramatic, tear-jerking references to history, justice, or the right of the people of Israel to the holy city, the bare truth is that the Israeli Prime Minister has always used the city as merely a pawn in his personal political games.

Back in 1995, it was Mr Netanyahu who mobilised lobbyists and lawmaker friends in the US Congress to pass the Jerusalem Embassy Act, legislation which demanded that American presidents move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

He did this not because he cared about the city he knew that no US president at that time was ever likely to relocate the American embassy but because he wanted to derail efforts by the then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was within striking distance of reaching a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Mr Netanyahu reckoned correctly as it turned out that the dispute over who controls Jerusalem would provide the dynamite to blow up any and every chance for Middle East peace. And so it does to this day.

Bristows is Being Hammered With Negative Comments For Its Unitary Patent (UPC) Lies "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Bristows typically deletes comments it does not like, but too many people would notice if Bristows overdid it

Alan Johnson

Summary: The Unified Patent Court (UPC) is practically dead in the UK and Ireland; Bristows, nevertheless, continues with its desperate spin

THE EPO barely mentions the word/term UPC. Neither does the media. Its dead.

Bristows keeps pushing UPC agenda into blogs other than its own, even on a Friday night; we expected criticism to be selectively deleted, as usual (it happened before), but some of it is starting to show up. On Monday morning someone wrote to us: Kluwer, where have all the comments gone?

Did you notice that there are almost no comments (published) on this piece since it was put online on Friday evening although similar posts in the past attracted a lot of feedback, mostly within hours? Why do you think this is?

Looking at Kluwer Patent Blog this morning, we actually find 3 more critical comments, namely:

When the UPCA was drafted and signed, the UKs involvement and the establishment of part of the central division in London were key feature. That the agreement could be open to non-EU members had never been envisaged.
Brexit radically undermines these fundamental elements and, at best, the terms of the agreement need to be changed in a yet undefined way.
So how can it be that the ratification of an agreement that has become obsolete and no longer reflects the will of its authors is still a topic in those countries that have fortunately not yet done so?
And why on earth should the GCC submit such an outdated agreement to the CJEU in the circumstances?

Then someone from France (based on the URL/TLD) posted:

Dear proponents of the UPC and the post Brexit membership of UK,

When I see the problems which have led to an enquiry of of the Justice Sub-Committee of the House of Lords EU Committee, see

Big Pharma making moves to monopolize CBD oil market "IndyWatch Feed World"

The cannabinoids in cannabis - cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - interact with your body by way of naturally-occurring cannabinoid receptors embedded in cell membranes throughout your body. In fact, scientists now believe the endocannabinoid system may represent the most widespread receptor system in your body.1 There are cannabinoid receptors in your brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, immune system and more, and both the therapeutic and psychoactive properties of marijuana occur when a cannabinoid activates a cannabinoid receptor. Your body actually makes its own cannabinoids, similar to those found in marijuana, albeit in much smaller quantities than you get from the plant. The fact that your body is replete with cannabinoid receptors, key to so many biological functions, is why there's such enormous medical potential for cannabis. More often than not, medicinal marijuana is made from plants bred to have high CBD and low THC content. While THC has psychoactive activity that can make you feel "stoned," CBD has no psychoactive properties.

NFL fan turnout so bad that Fox Sports is soliciting actors to play fans, fill seats at Sundays pre-game show "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Warm bodies now getting paid to attend games, sit-in as fans

(INTELLIHUB) Its no big secret that NFL viewership and fan turnout at live games has diminished to all-time lows as teams struggle to sell even their lower-level tickets for as little as $3 and $4 after players decided to kneel during game numerous opening national anthems but no one would have ever thought it would come to the point to where fans have to be paid to fill stadium seats.

Thats right, you heard me, in the latest barrage of NFL shenanigans, Fox Sports has put out a casting call and is looking for Rams fans to attend Sundays pre-game in Los Angeles. The geniuses that took a knee to spite America have now created their own demise.

The solicitation posted on reads:

Casting directors are now looking for NFL fans for Sunday, December 10th in Los Angeles, California.

Producers are seeking the following:

  • Were looking for LAs biggest NFL fans to be a part of #NFLSundays Los Angeles Rams vs. Philadelphia Eagles Pre Game Show!
    Calling all LA Rams fans!

Maybe we should give all that NFL money the players have been getting for decades to Monster Energy Supercross riders, athletes who really risk life and limb to do what they do.

Just some food for thought. Please comment below and share.

Feminism 'empowering' women by portraying them as sex objects "IndyWatch Feed World"

On Sunday, LOVE Magazine released its annual advent calendar. And on the "3rd day of Christmas," 26-year-old model Emily Ratajkowski stands clothed in nothing but red lingerie, a pair of winter gloves, and...Italian food. All in the name of feminism. Nothing like the objectification of women to advance an agenda geared toward female equality and empowerment. Right, feminists? I'm sure Weinstein is thanking you copiously for it. Ratajkowski has been a fervent "feminist" for quite some time, and lately has developed quite a voice when it comes to acknowledging and decrying allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and rape. Yet she, a thin, white, cis woman who has probably never ingested carbs in her life, is parading herself around like a sex object. She's crying out against men objectifying and harassing women, when she literally allows (and celebrates) her own objectification into a plate at an Olive Garden. Not to mention the fact that she has dozens of pictures of herself either half- or completely naked on her Twitter profile, which was research I REALLY didn't want to have to do, but it is what it is. Digression aside, the irony of this is absolutely hysterical. And incredibly irritating.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday (Dec 11), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the accusations were baseless.

We hope the relevant German organisations, particularly government departments, can speak and act more responsibly, and not do things that are not beneficial to the development of bilateral relations, he said.

Germanys intelligence service had earlier published the details of social network profiles which it says were fronts faked by Chinese intelligence to gather personal information about German officials and politicians.

The BfV domestic intelligence service took the unusual step of naming individual profiles it says were fake and fake organisations to warn public officials about the risk of leaking valuable personal information via social media.

Cannabinoid Deficiency and Its Impact on Human Health and Disease "IndyWatch Feed World"

Comment: We're compiling here parts 1, 2 and 3 of this article (published on July, October and November 2017 respectively) If you had mentioned "cannabis" in a room of people two decades ago, you would have seen an immediate, violent schism between those who believed it was the gateway to opiate hell and depravity and those who felt it was a safer and gentler alternative to alcohol. Today, science is beginning to understand that there are many "layers" to the issue of marijuana use. In this paper, we will attempt to start a dialog, a discussion which has been too long in coming. We will explore the available information (and even more misinformation), dispel the myths, and examine the role this plant can play in promoting health. Our ultimate goal is to clarify waters that have been long muddied by political, financial, and economic concerns totally unrelated to and unconcerned with the real properties of this "humble herb."

Roy Moores Core Supporters In Alabama Dont Care What You Think "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Fannin Road Baptist Church sits across from an abandoned cow pasture on the west side of Montgomery, Alabama, in a poor neighborhood of sparse, dilapidated single-story homes near Maxwell Air Force Base. Pastor Jim Lester began what he calls a missionary church here in 1998, while he was still on active duty in the Air Force.

At 63, Lester has a military bearing and sports a closely cropped gray mustache, a bald head, and a distinct North Carolina drawl. Like most pastors of independent fundamentalist Baptist churches in Alabama, Lester doesnt mince words about what he believesor why he supports Roy Moore.

Lester was one of the 53 Alabama pastors who signed a letter endorsing the Republican Alabama Senate candidate back in August. A month ago, Moores wife, Kayla Moore, re-posted the letter on Facebook in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against her husband. Since then, Lester says hes been contacted by close to a hundred reporters but hasnt spoken out, until now.

Roy Moore was a man who was willing to stand on his principles, even though it cost him his job as chief justice, cost him his livelihood, Lester says, referring to Moores removal from the Alabama Supreme Court, first in 2003 and again in 2016. Thats extreme. But Lester is quick to clarify that his support for Moore goes beyond his belief that Moore is a man of principle.

We take the Bible literally as Gods word, he says. And the problem with abortion is that we believe that its the taking of a human life, at any point. Lester is referring to Democratic candidate Doug Jones and his support for abortion, which is all Lester needs to know about him. He quotes Proverbs chapter 6, which lists seven things that God hates. You ever heard this? he asks me. You know what they are? Do you know what one of them is? He quickly answers his own question: The shedding of innocent blood. That is something God hates.

Lester doesnt believe the allegations against Moore are true. But he says that even if Moore were proven guilty of the worst of the accusations leveled against himthat he groped a 14-year-old when he was in his early thirtiesabortion, or the taking of a human life, would still be a worse sin in the eyes of God. Its not about what Jim Lester thinks, its about what God thinks, he says. That directs my voting.

Moore Supporters Are Motivated By Religious Convictions

This is more or less the view of a large swath of Moore supporters in Alabama, and especially the pastors of mostly small, independent churches who have publicly e...

States Seek To Avoid Facing Little Sisters In Court While Challenging Their Legal Win "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Beneath the shroud of the elderlys wrinkled, withered skin, parchment thin from age, the Little Sisters of the Poor see Jesus. This vision animates the Little Sisters as they care for the elderly poor in homes throughout the United States and the world, daily confronting the pain wrought by disease and desolation.

But now the attorneys general of six states seek to force these religious caregivers to violate their consciences or pay millions of dollars in fines, and these powerful men want to do this without having to face the Little Sisters in a court of law.

The Little Sisters do not want to be in court either, but the choice was not theirs. Four years ago, the Obama administration forced the Little Sisters into litigation. It was either that, violate their conscience by facilitating health insurance payments for birth control, abortifacients, and sterilization procedures, or pay an annual fine of $2.5 million.

After taking two trips to the Supreme Court and reaching an impasse in negotiating an accommodation with the Obama administration, the Little Sisters finally received a reprieve when, on October 6, 2017, the Trump administration issued new regulations exempting the Little Sisters, and other individuals and entities with a religious objection, from the Affordable Care Acts birth control mandate.

But within hours of the release of the new interim rules, the attorneys general of California, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Virginia filed a lawsuit in a San Francisco federal court, challenging the Trump administrations new religious-based exemption. The Pennsylvania attorney general filed a nearly identical complaint in federal district court in Philadelphia.

No Defending Yourselves in Court, Little Sisters

The Little Sisters sought to intervene in both cases to defend the religious-based exemptionsomething allowed under federal rules governing court procedures. Yet, in both cases, the attorneys general opposed the Little Sisters motion to intervene. It is much easier arguing for womens rights in the abstract than making that argument when challenged by women pleading for their right to religious liberty.

Unfortunately, on Friday the Little Sisters lost in their attempt to intervene in the Pennsylvania case when Judge Wendy Beetlestone, a Barack Obama appointee, denied their motion to intervene. Beetlestone concluded the Little Sisters lacked an interest in the litigation sufficient to justify joining the Trump administrations defense of the exemption.

Thats even though in issuing the new rules, the federal government expressly stated that it sought to resolve the pending litigation and prevent future litigation from similar plaintiffs; and even though Beetlestone acknowledged in her opinion that an interest in relief granted by anot...

Lindsey Vonn, Youre Not Representing Trump At The Olympics. Youre Representing America "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn recently sat down with CNN to discuss the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. The decorated athlete sat out the 2014 Winter Olympics due to a knee injury but has her eyes set on a comeback, which will likely serve as a farewell to her career on Olympic slopes.

But the interview seemed focused less on Vonns Olympics hopes and more as a platform for her to express disdain for the president, saying she would neither accept an invitation to the White House if invited nor would it be President Trump shed represent at the Olympic Games. Thats great, considering no U.S. president in American history has ever chartered his own national ski team.

Vonn seems to be hopping on the tired trend of musicians, actors, athletes, and other celebrities renouncing ties to President Trump instead of focusing their time and talent on creating, expressing, or performing. #NotMyPresident was a national trend on Twitter for weeks while Colin Kaepernick, who infamously started the NFLs anti-Trump #TakeAKnee movement in response to police brutality, was just awarded the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. That award was presented to him by none other than Beyonc, whose 2016 hit Formation, also a response to police brutality and a colloquial anti-Trump anthem, is the most awarded song of all time.

Lets Get Some Perspective, Maam

What Vonn doesnt seem to understand is that the very people she purports to represent are, in fact, what the Olympics are about. Any Olympian blessed enough to be given the opportunity to compete at that level already represents the very best ideals and principles of the American people, regardless of who holds the seat in the executive branch.

Vonn is free to express whatever political beliefs she may have. U.S. Olympians arent obligated to profess allegiance to the federal government once they hit the podium. But her decision to take her eyes off the honor of representing the American people and instead channeling her energy into renouncing a role she doesnt fulfill reflects a trend of ridiculously blessed celebrities who dont seem to realize that the very nation they spend countless hours condemning is the same one that has paved the way for their successes.

Interestingly enough, a simple Google search reveals some inconsistencies with Vonns anti-Trump narrative and the corporations she allows to sponsor her. The 33-year-old skier has been competing since childhood. Besides holding 77 World Cup wins, 7 gold World Championship medals, and an Olympic gold, she has racked up sponsors. The most prominent of those include Rolex, The Hershey Company, and Under Armor. This means Vonn has chosen some intriguing bedfellows if she remains intent on using her screen time to blast Trump.

Dont Throw Stones in...

Without Concealed-Carry Reciprocity, Self-Defense Is A Second-Class Right "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When civil rights advocates on the Left speak of the Bill of Rights, they are generally not referring to all ten amendments. The Ninth and Tenth are frequently forgotten or dismissed as tautologies. The Second Amendment, especially, gets ignored altogether.

This is not just a matter of what legal cases groups like the American Civil Liberties Union will take up. It also trickles down into the general understanding of our rights as Americans.

While rights like free speech, free religion, and the right against self-incrimination are perceived, Left and Right, as the universal rights of all Americans, the right to keep and bear arms is idiosyncratically dismissed as a matter for local determination. That view is increasingly out of step with a nation that believes civil rights should not be different for citizens of different states.

Equal Citizenship in all 50 States

One major benefit of the U.S. Constitution is that you can travel among the states without leaving your rights behind. The Constitution joined 13 semi-independent former colonies into one united country and, while it preserved a great deal of regional autonomy, it meant that a citizen of one state could not be treated as a second-class resident in another.

If you are married in Georgia, South Carolina cannot consider you unwed. If you are allowed to drive a car in Maine, New Hampshire cannot void your drivers license. Fundamental rights are even more secure: your right to free speech in California is guaranteed whether you live there or are just visiting for the day from Nevada.

The exception to all this is the right to bear arms. Your concealed-carry permit issued in Pennsylvania wont do you a lick of good in New Jersey. You might even find yourself in jail, as Shaneen Allen did in 2014, for innocently assuming that states are required to give full faith and credit to the acts of their neighboring states.

If that term full faith and credit sounds familiar, it is because it is found in Article IV of the Constitution. The point of such a rule is obvious. As citizens of the same country, people should have the same rights when they travel from state to state. Although there have been policy exceptions to this rule over time, the general idea is that the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of one state are valid in another.

The provision that follows that one reinforces the point: The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. As Justice Joseph Story wrote in his ...

How Ditching Net Neutrality Will Give Consumers More And Better Options "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Could you bear to live in a world where parts of the Internet might be bundled and sold to you monthly in the form of subscriptions? Apparently, some people cant. A representative from California shared this graphic on social media, supposedly to demonstrate how terrible lifting net neutrality would be. To me, it demonstrates the exact opposite.

If you add up the subscriptions, the no net neutrality model costs 4 cents less. Either Rep. Ro Khannas staff is really bad at math or potentially providing the Internet to consumers differently is so horrible we wouldnt want it even if it cost less.

Its pretty sad that supporters of rule by desks dont hesitate to dump bureaucratic sludge all over any new good ideas that might take shape in a free market. As Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, who supports overturning so-called net neutrality, told Reason in an interview: Its telling that the first investigations that the prior FCC initiated under these so-called Net Neutrality rules were involving free data offeringsTo me its just absurd to say that the government should stand in the way of consumers who want to get, and companies that want to provide, free data.

There He Goes Again: Lamar Alexander Misrepresents His Health Insurer Bailout "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As Ronald Reagan might say, There you go again. Last week, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) published an op-ed in the Washington Examiner making claims about the Obamacare stabilization bill he developed with Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA).

The article tells a nice story about how conservatives should support the bill, but alas, one can consider it just that: A story. The article includes several material omissions and outright false statements about the legislation and its impact. Below are the facts and full context that Alexander wouldnt dare admit about his bill.

Claim: CBO [the Congressional Budget Office] said last month that making [cost-sharing reduction] payments would reduce Obamacare subsidies and therefore reduce the federal deficit.

Fact: In reality, the Congressional Budget Office in its score of the Alexander-Murray bill said the exact opposite:

Simply comparing outcomes with and without funding for CSRs [cost-sharing reduction payments], CBO and [the Joint Committee on Taxation] expect that federal costs in 2018 would be higher with funding for CSRs because premiums for 2018 have already been finalized and rebates related to CSRs would be less than the CSR payments themselves. [Emphasis mine.]

Insurers have already finalized their premiums for 2018 (in most states, open enrollment ends this Friday, December 15), and when doing so assumed cost-sharing reductions would not be paid. If Congress now turns around and appropriates those payments for 2018, insurers would have the possibility to double-dip. That means getting paid twice by the federal government to provide lower cost-sharing to low-income individuals.

While CBO believes insurers will return some of the extra subsidies they receive to the federal government$3.1 billion worth, according to their estimatethey also believe that insurers will keep some portion of the excess, as much as $4-6 billion worth. That dynamic explains why CBO believes federal spending will increase, not decrease, as Alexander claims, if Congress appropriates cost-sharing reduction payments for 2018.

Claim: The CBO tells us that without these [cost-sharing reduction] payments, taxpayers will spend $194 billion more over a decade to cover the higher [O...

Sending Roy Moore To The Senate Will Cost The GOP House In 2018 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

A few days from now, you Alabama voters will walk into a polling place and surrender your vote to an electronic voting machine or a ballot box. Your choice, like the cut of a carpenter, will be irreversible. You may want to measure twice before you cut once, unless you want to end Donald Trumps presidency.

Human beings are endlessly adaptable. We are driven to endure, to persist; the flesh surrenders before the spirit. From the horrific to the mundane, life finds a way. John McCain withstood the unimaginable in a concentration camp. An alcoholic takes it one day at a time. With sufficient ticks of the clock, we become inured to drenching political deception as if it were inevitable as the rain.

There are people who live in Buffalo and others who eat Brussel sprouts, although no one can imagine why. What we cannot or must not change, we learn to tolerate.

The Roy Moore scandal broke 34 days before the December 12 Alabama election. That was dozens of scandals ago, a painful political eternity. The dramatic intensity of this choice has wrung emotions out of you like a towel. Exhausted, you are reverting to norm and have built Moores behavior into his stock price. Now you wonder if your choice should hinge on something more important: Not partisan politics, not your revulsion at voting for a Democrat, but your countrys survival and success?

You Know the Arguments for Roy Moore Well

Your country is in trouble. The unifying idea of this exceptional American nation, open to all who would nourish it, strong and proud in the world, has been crumbling before your eyes. Your identity has been mocked by a condescending elite that wields identity politics like a club, jeers at your faith, and celebrates national erosion. Blind to what they have done to your country, they applaud their own failures as accomplishments.

It was all going down the tubes until you put Trump in the Oval Office. Now, when the wind is finally beginning to blow the right way, you wonder, Why should I punish my country for Roy Moores failings?

Another Democrat in Washington to vote for endless spending, higher taxes, porous borders? Another Democrat in Washington to sacrifice the American soul for do-gooder programs that only do good for those who legislate? If you add one more straw to our political burden, one day soon, the nations back will break and we may never make America great again.

The media has got it all wrong: You are not choosing Moore over Doug Jones. You are voting to save your country. Perhaps you must swallow your pride and your principles and send Moore to Washington? After all, Democrats learned to live with Bill Clinton. Reprehensible or not, Moore is a fireman. Jones is an arsonist. Perhaps you must live with the embarrassment of Moore to protect your country from t...

Voting For Roy Moore Is Not A Vote For Pedophilia, And Other Spurious Charges "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Philosophy professor Tully Borland has come under fire for his recent article in The Federalist, Why Alabamians Should Vote for Roy Moore. Actually, thats putting it mildly. Apparently, writing an article that calls Moore a terrible candidate, but defends voting for him as the lesser of two evils, forces one to run the gauntlet between clubs on the Left and Right.

In complete disregard for academic freedom, many have called for Borlands dismissal from his employment. In complete disregard for common decency or attention to Borlands actual words, many have leveled the utterly false and malicious charge that he advocates pedophilia and is a defender of sexual assault. Witness the following Tweets:

@jeffreymarch9: The author of this column, Tully Borland, is cool with pedophelia [sic], says you gotta start early if you want a big family.

@dyrdaisy: Well, actually, f-cking children is good. is not a take I expected.
@binaryecho: Hi Im Tully Borland and I think raping children is ok.

@ashleyruu: The author is a professor teaching our future leaders. The University should remove him immediately.

How did we get here? What did Borland actually say? After a quick summary of what Borland said, I want to make a few observations about the reactions to it from the Left and the Right, both a snapshot of a larger, bleak picture of the current state of American public discourse.

What Borland Actually Said

Comparing Moore to opponent Doug Jones, Borland argues that a Moore victory would be the lesser of the two evils in a binary election in which these are the only two viable options. Why? Well, even if Moore is guilty of sexual assault and seeking sexual relationships with girls as young as 14 some 40 years ago, as accused, that is very unlikely to have policy ramifications today, whereas Jones supports a policy of unrestricted abortion today.

Dont be misled here: Jones supports killing a fetus up to the moment of crowning, the moment a baby exits his mother during birth. That isnt your typical pro-choice position. Thats almost as extreme as they come. So, as Borland sees it, either Jones knows exactly what hes doing in supporting killing babies in utero but doesnt care, in which case hes a moral monster, or his moral compass is in such need of calibration that one should never trust his judgment in moral matters. Borland therefore concludes that one is morally justified in voting for Moore, whose win would result in lesser evil.

Like Borland, I am a philosophy professor. As such I know that sometimes, when we argue for a position, we...

5 Thoughts On The Furor Over The White Houses Hanukkah Party "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The media is so addicted to outrage that theyve now set Hanukkah ablaze. The Jewish Festival of Lights, which begins the evening of December 12 this year, was celebrated last Thursday night at the White House. Because it was Donald Trumps first Hanukkah party, were supposed to be inflamed by the White Houses supposed hostility to American Jewry.

Beyond the timing of the event, the media was offended that only 300 guests attended, not including many of their political allies on the Hill and elsewhere (e.g., J Street). They also didnt like the decor. As a Jew watching all of this from home, I had some thoughts on the Hanukkah hullabaloo.

1. Define Hanukkah Decorations

Hanukkah has been elevated to Christmas-like importance so American Jewish children dont feel left out in December. But Hanukkah isnt Christmas. So I was confused by the pool reporter noting there are no visible Hanukkah decorations or menorah in the East Room, but there are four large Christmas trees. Yes, you could say theres irony in celebrating a holiday about resisting assimilation while surrounded by Christmas trees.

However, what Hanukkah decorations was the pooler expecting? I honestly dont know, because celebrating the Festival of Lights is about lighting candles (which Newsweek reports the Kushner children did), singing Maoz Tzur (which Elite Daily reports attendees did) and eating fried foods like potato pancakes (which The New York Times reports were on-hand).

2. The Guest List Isnt Scandalous

Multiple articles trumpeted how shocking it is that congressional Jewish Democrats werent invited. But can we really be surprised? First, its not scandalous. Just because President Obama did things a certain way doesnt mean everyone will, or should. As Tevi Troy, former Jewish liaison under President George W. Bush (who started the annual Hanukkah party tradition), told McClatchy, members of Congress typically werent invited to the White House Hanukkah party during Bushs tenure.

Second, Jewish Democrats have been incredibly outspoken about #Resistance this past year, as is their right. But was the president supposed to invite Hillary ally Debbie Wasserman Schultz and others so they could turn their regrets into some sort of public performance art? Tennessees Rep. Steve Cohen tweeted: Congressional Democrats Left Out of White House Hanukkah Party Honored not to h...

8 Christmas Gifts You Can Buy From Veteran-Owned Businesses "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Several months ago I met a combat-decorated Special Forces veteran who is a stay-at-home dadand a knitter! After following him on Instagram, I learned more about his personal story and his business.

Several veterans are finding personal and financial fulfillment as small business owners. Christmas is the perfect time to shop with them. Not just because theyre veterans, but also because they are making quality products.

1. Warrior Woven

Their main product is hand-knitted skullcaps, called Meanies. Combat-wounded veterans, Green Berets, cancer fighters, soldiers, and caregivers for the combat wounded knit every single hat. There are a variety of hats, as well as custom hats you can have made with team colors, school colors, or special occasions like this one to commemorate a Vietnam veteran.

Youre not just getting a great product, but also supporting a great cause. Kevin, who was wounded in a helicopter accident in Iraq, and his wife Alicia, a breast cancer survivor, donate proceeds to Camp Kesem, a free summer camp for children who have family members battling cancer.

2. Salzman Custom Sawing

J.R. Salzman is an Iraq War veteran, amputee, and championship lumberjack. His products include beautiful cutting and bread boards, cribbage boards, and customized growth charts on wood. Every item is made from fallen urban trees. Pieces are made from cherry, red oak, eucalyptus (my favorite), maple, walnut, and others.

CNN Contributor: Media Mistakes Are Why People Should Trust The Media "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

During a segment on Reliable Sources, CNN contributor David Frum said Sunday that factual errors in reporting stories are precisely why people should trust the news media.

Frum then launched into a bizarre metaphor about astronomers and reporters. The gist is that journalism is a process and that mistakes occur in the process of exposing the lies that the liars then complain about the mistakes.

You can watch the whole exchange yourself here. Its something.

The mistakes are precisely the reason the people should trust the media, Frum told Brian Stelter. Astronomers make mistakes all the time because science is a process of discovery of truth. Astrologers never make mistakes or at least they never own up to them. Because what they are offering a closed system of ideology and propaganda.

He then proceeded to offer an obtuse explanation of what truth is and how reporting the truth works.

Faced with wrong-doing, circled by lies, the process of piercing the lies to uncover the truth about the wrongdoing is inherently not only difficult but adversarial, he said. Because the people who are trying to find the truth are operating against bad faith actors engaged in concealment. They get partial pieces of the truth. In the process, there are going to be overshoots and undershoots.

If the transcript reads like word salad, thats because it is.

CNN has been dogged with criticisms after they incorrectly reported that Donald Trump Jr. got early access to a trove of docu...

U.S. Department Of Justice Finally Starts Investigating Planned Parenthood "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

At least two years after the Center for Medical Progress released explosive undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood (PP) profited from aborted baby part harvesting, the Department of Justice has finally announced they will investigate PP.

The videos prompted an investigation by the House Oversight Committee, which found, among other things, that PP did not need federal funding. Following that, the Senate Judiciary investigated PP and issued a report, Human Fetal Tissue Research: Context and Controversy published last December. Its summary says, The activities of those involved, in the fetal tissue transfer industry potentially implicate a number of federal laws.

Following that, committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told the FBI it should investigate PP: The report documents the failure of the Department of Justice, across multiple administrations, to enforce the law that bans the buying and selling of human fetal tissue. It also documents substantial evidence suggesting that the specific entities involved in the recent controversy, and/or individuals employed by those entities, may have violated that law.

Now, Fox News reports that Justice Department Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd has requested unredacted documents from the Senate Judiciary Committee, in order to further the Departments ability to conduct a thorough and comprehensive assessment of that report based on the full range of information available.

Center for Medical Progress founder David Daleiden said in a statement, Over two years ago, citizen journalists at The Center for Medical Progress first caught Planned Parenthoods top abortion doctors in a series of undercover videos callously and flippantly negotiating the sale of tiny baby hearts, lungs, livers, and brains. Since then, two Congressional investigations found even deeper wrongdoing and confirmed that Planned Parenthood Federation of America, several of their biggest affiliates, and multiple business partners broke the law in a profit-driven scheme to commodify dismembered baby body parts. It is time for public officials to finally hold Planned Parenthood and their criminal abortion enterprise accountable under the law.

Given the myriad investigations and their findings, the real question is, if the DOJ comes to the same conclusion previous investigations have, what should be done about it? At best, this should give Congress the gumption it needs to finally defund the immoral behemoth that is Planned Parenthood.

Israel signs deal worth 18.6 million euros with Turkey amid political turmoil

Israel has signed a deal worth nearly 18.6 million euros with Turkeys Anadolu Isuzu, a joint automotive manufacturing venture between Turkeys Anadolu Group and Japans Isuzu Motors, to buy buses, the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) said on Dec. 6.

A deal to make a delivery worth 18.6 million euros has been signed with our Israeli distributor Universal Trucks Israel Ltd., the company which won the bid, KAP said in a statement.

The submittal of the delivery mentioned hereby is planned to begin in 2018, and is expected to be completed by 2019, it added.

Anadolu Isuzu produces 25 different models within five segments in Turkey. While the greatest capital is spared to the midibus, which compromises one-fourth of the production share, the D-Max pick-up follows with 12 percent.

Anadolu Isuzu currently has 823 workers. Its revenue in 2016 was 830 million Turkish Liras.

In 2016, a total of 5,240 vehicles were produced, of which 666 were exported, by the company headquartered in Istanbul.

Will Irans Expansionist Scheme Fail? "IndyWatch Feed War"

Irans theocratic regime, which has maintained power domestically via brutal oppression for over four decades, is continuing its devastating expansionist policies across the Middle East, paying no heed to the bloody results of its subversive policies.

The fallout from Irans policies is not limited to the terrible destruction in those regional nations where the regime has established a foothold, but also seems to be wreaking havoc on the Iranian state itself.

Irans regime and the entire country are isolated, exhausted, and militarily and financially stretched to their limit.

Recent indications suggest the regimes regional clout is waning, with the proxy militias starting to fall out among themselves. Failure on the ground and rising public discontent among local populations (including the large minority populations) make it impossible for them to follow through with Irans political program.

Exploiting the Arab Spring

Iran publicly voiced support for the uprisings against various oppressive regimes in the Arab world which broke out in early 2011, with many viewing the regimes claims as insincere and motivated by the leaders wish to capitalize on and exploit the revolutions for Irans own benefit, to gain leverage in the region.

Tehran saw the turbulence of the Arab Spring as an opportunity for exploitation, allowing it to foment divisions and fuel sectarian schisms, which could be used as part of a divide and rule policy.

Irans regime wants its 1979 Islamic revolution which itself ended with the crushing of all the countrys democratic parties to be the sole successful example of an uprising in the region, with any genuinely popular movement for freedom which might threaten the regimes domination of the Middle East ruthlessly crushed as in Syria.

Since first coming to power in 1979, the regime has planned and worked tirelessly to divide and fragment Arab societies. Rather...

BRUSSELS Meeting with the foriegn ministers of the European Union in Brussels, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the EU needs to stop pampering Palestinians and follow U.S. President Donald Trump, who Netanyahu claimed tells them the truth.

While dining with 28 of the EUs top diplomats, Netanyahu said that Israels actions prevent ISIS from spreading and that we do this to protect ourselves but also Europe. There is no country in the Mideast that protects Europe like Israel.

Earlier Netanyahu spoke positively of the American peace initiative as the organizations foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, told the Israeli premier that Europe wanted to be more involved in talks.

Mogherini also praised the two-state solution as the only possible framework for resolving the conflict and said the EU supports the idea of Jerusalem being a shared capital for both the Israelis and the Palestinians. Netanyahu, for his part, said peace was contingent on Palestinian recognition Jerusalem as Israels capital.

Philippines defied experts advice in pursuing dengue immunization program "IndyWatch Feed War"

MANILA (Reuters) As she announced in January 2016 that the Philippines would immunize one million children with a new dengue vaccine, the nations then health secretary Janette Garin boasted it was a world-first and a tribute to her countrys expertise in research.

At the time, it seemed the Philippines could be on the cusp of a breakthrough to combat a potentially lethal tropical virus that had been endemic in large parts of the Southeast Asian nation for decades.

Almost two years later, the program lies in tatters and has been suspended after Sanofi Pasteur, a division of French drug firm Sanofi, said at the end of last month the vaccine itself may in some cases increase the risk of severe dengue in recipients not previously infected by the virus.

Documents reviewed by Reuters that have not been disclosed until now, as well as interviews with local experts, show that key recommendations made by a Philippines Department of Health (DOH) advisory body of doctors and pharmacologists were not heeded before the program was rolled out to 830,000 children.

After Garins announcement, the Formulary Executive Council (FEC) of advisers urged cautio...

Voters Are Left in the Dark By Alabamas Election System "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

On Tuesday night, all eyes will be on Alabama to see who won the special election between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones. But with Alabamas opaque election process, we may never be certain that the results were accurate.

Alabamas Secretary of State John Merrill refuses to preserve the digital ballot records produced by the vote-tabulating machines. Election integrity activist John Brakey, co-founder and executive director of AUDIT-AZ, says this deprives citizens of a means to scrutinize election results for errors and evidence of rigging. On this basis, he has been instrumental in bringing a lawsuit against Merrill.

This all comes ahead of a highly anticipated special election that could determine the fate of the GOP tax bill in the Senate.

According to the suit, Alabama election officials are required to save the ballots and other election materials for six (6) months in the case of state elections and twenty-two (22) months in federal elections, and federal election law requires the retention of all records, papers, and materials by officials of elections.

The plaintiffs insist ballot images meet the definitions of both federal election materials and state public record, and therefore qualify for protection.

Alabamas optical scan tabulating systems, which dont count the ballots themselves but instead scan them and count the resulting image files, purge these files from memory upon shutdown.

Activist Bev Harris, founder of Black Box Voting, a self-described nonpartisan investigative reporting and public education organization for elections, told WhoWhatWhy theres no legitimate reason not to preserve the files: it costs no money and takes no time, she says, and would be as easy as going into a menu and flipping a switch.

In fact, according to Harris, the manual for Alabamas DS200 scanners specifically states that the purpose of the ballot images was to help with auditing.

Plenty of other states including Florida, Michigan, and Wisconsin already release their ballot images to the public upon request. Some jurisdictions, like Dane County, WI, go even further and post their ballot images online.

Theres certainly precedent for the plaintiffs case that these files qualify for mandatory preservation: Colorado has ruled in favor of keeping the ballot images, as has...

Picking up and planing down rough maple planks, [Clifford] built a mitered box to house the components before applying wood finish. The brain inside the box is an Arduino Mega or a suitable clone controlling a Dayton Bluetooth audio and 2x15W amp board. In addition to the 19.7V power supply, theres a step down converter for the Mega, and a mic to make the LED matrix sound-reactive. The LED matrix is on a moveable baffle to adjust the distance between it and a semi-transparent acrylic light diffuser. This shifts the light between sharp points or a softer, blended look perfect for the scrolling Matrix text and fireplace effects! Check it out!

Ann Althouses Grab and Gumbo "IndyWatch Feed"

The New York Times has a big piece today written by Maggie Haberman, Glenn Thrush and Peter Baker. Its about Donald Trumps hour-by-hour battle for self-preservation. As you might expect, it begins with the waking hour.

Around 5:30 each morning, President Trump wakes and tunes into the television in the White Houses master bedroom. He flips to CNN for news, moves to Fox & Friends for comfort and messaging ideas, and sometimes watches MSNBCs Morning Joe because, friends suspect, it fires him up for the day.

Energized, infuriated often a gumbo of both Mr. Trump grabs his iPhone.

That conforms with what has been reported before. The president likes to watch cable television, especially in the morning. He watches a lot of Fox & Friends, which we already knew because his tweets often track with their discussions. Even the fact that hes no longer using an Android phone is old news.

So, this isnt exactly the most exciting beginning to a big article, but you might get a kick out of the reasons that it made Ann Althouse angry and inspired her to pick up her quill.

She wants us to realize that a journalist cant just casually use the verb grab to describe the presidents actions because its evocative of the Access Hollywood tape and Trumps locker-room boasts about committing sexual assault. So, for Althouse, when the biased Times reporters say that Trump grabs his iPhone, they might as well have said that he moves on his iPhone like a bitch.

But thats not only nit Althouse wants to pick. She also has a big problem with the word gumbo. It inspired her to break out her Oxford English Dictionary, presumably so she could be certain that president want being accused of practicing voodoo on his remote control.

But that gumbo, I want to talk about the gumbo. I know HabermanTrushBaker are using gumbo to mean stew, but stew is well established to mean A state of excitement, esp. of great alarm or anxiety. The OED has that meaning for stew going back to 1806, whereas gumbo only means okra, the soup thickened with the mucilaginous pods of this plant,&rdq...

U.S. media embarrasses itself over constant barrage of fake news, refuses to explain why they messed up "IndyWatch Feed World"

Friday was one of the most embarrassing days for the U.S. media in quite a long time. The humiliation orgy was kicked off by CNN, with MSNBC and CBS close behind, with countless pundits, commentators and operatives joining the party throughout the day. By the end of the day, it was clear that several of the nation's largest and most influential news outlets had spread an explosive but completely false news story to millions of people, while refusing to provide any explanation of how it happened. The spectacle began on Friday morning at 11 a.m. EST, when the Most Trusted Name in News spent 12 straight minutes on air flamboyantly hyping an exclusive bombshell report that seemed to prove that WikiLeaks, last September, had secretly offered the Trump campaign, even Donald Trump himself, special access to the DNC emails before they were published on the internet. As CNN sees the world, this would prove collusion between the Trump family and WikiLeaks and, more importantly, between Trump and Russia, since the U.S. intelligence community regards WikiLeaks as an "arm of Russian intelligence," and therefore, so does the U.S. media. This entire revelation was based on an email which CNN strongly implied it had exclusively obtained and had in its possession. The email was sent by someone named "Michael J. Erickson" - someone nobody had heard of previously and whom CNN could not identify - to Donald Trump, Jr., offering a decryption key and access to DNC emails that WikiLeaks had "uploaded." The email was a smoking gun, in CNN's extremely excited mind, because it was dated September 4 - 10 days before WikiLeaks began promoting access to those emails online - and thus proved that the Trump family was being offered special, unique access to the DNC archive: likely by WikiLeaks and the Kremlin.

Netanyahu Calls on Palestinians to Advance Peace "IndyWatch Feed War"

Israeli prime minister says it is time to recognize Jerusalem as the capital

Dec. 11, 2017 3:47 a.m. ET

BRUSSELSIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Palestinians to accept Jerusalem as Israels capital on Monday, saying that was the best way to advance serious peace talks.

Speaking on his first ever official trip to the European Union capital, Mr. Netanyahu said last weeks decision by President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital had put facts squarely on the table.

Peace is based on recognizing reality, he said. Jerusalem is Israels capital. No one can deny it. It doesnt obviate peace. It makes peace possible.

Mr. Netanyahu said his government was awaiting peace proposals from the Trump administration and would give peace a chance.

Pockets of anger surfaced Sunday in the Middle East and Asia over the White Houses decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israels capital, but predictions of widespread upheaval failed to materialize as riots petered out.

The status of Jerusalem is a highly charged issue because Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state. The Trump administration has said its decision doesnt preclude the establishment of East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state should Israelis and Palestinians agree to such a scenario in peace talks.

Most European governments have criticized Mr. Trumps decision on Jerusalem, warning it could make a U.S.-led peace initiative much harder.

Standing beside the Israeli prime minister, European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc would continue to consider the status of Jerusalem as a matter to be left to a final peace deal based on a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.

She condemned attacks over the last few days on Israeli citizens and Jews livin...

BREAKING: Putin in Syria Announces Withdrawal of Russian Troops "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Russian President warns that should the terrorists try to rear their heads in Syria again, he will strike them as they have never seen before.

RT International reports

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria. He gave the command during a surprise visit to Khmeimim Airbase in Syrias Latakia province on Monday morning.

The Russian president was met by his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Assad, and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu at the airbase, which houses Russian forces assisting Syria in the battle against Islamic State terrorists (IS, formerly ISIS).

I order the defense minister and chief of the general staff to start the withdrawal of Russian troops to the site of their permanent deployment, Putin stated, speaking in front of Russian military personnel at Khmeimim.

The Russian leader said that in the space of two years the Russian and Syrian militaries have defeated the most battle-hardened grouping of international terrorists. Putin added that he had made the decision that a significant number of the Russian military contingent in Syria should return to Russia.

He warned that should the terrorists try to rear their heads in Syria again, Russia will strike them as they have never seen before. The Russian leader added that the conditions for a political settlement under the auspices of the United Nations had been created in Syria, and that refugees were returning home.

Putin said that the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria would continue its work, and that Russia would continue to use Khmeimim Airbase and the Syrian port of Tartus, which provides technical support for the Russian Navy.

After a short visit to Syria, the Russian president headed for Cairo, where he is scheduled to hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

Justice for all in the land of the free? The US as the global capital of mass incarceration "IndyWatch Feed World"

On this day 69 years ago the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, sketching the foundation of human rights law. Led by Eleanor Roosevelt, the United States played a critical role in bringing 48 nations together to enumerate a set of core individual rights and freedoms that we all reference to this day. Unfortunately today the US struggles to live up to these ideals it helped create. The punitive nature of American criminal justice deserves international censure. The US has emerged as the global capital of mass incarceration, and its sentencing laws must be examined. Although it calls itself the "land of the free," the US maintains a draconian sentencing scheme, sending more people to prison than any other nation. While it touts its own human rights record and lectures other nations on their human rights shortcomings, its voracious appetite for life sentences without parole is an embarrassment that fails to live up to the lofty rhetoric of the US Constitution, and falls far short of international standards. The sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, or LWOP, is just as the term implies. A person will remain behind bars for the rest of his or her life and until death, without any hope of release from prison. A cruel form of punishment often referred to as "the other death penalty," LWOP violates international human rights norms.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) Indias main opposition Congress party on Monday elevated Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the countrys most fabled political dynasty, as its president, preparing to challenge the dominance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of national polls in 2019.

In a long-awaited move, Gandhi, the great-grandson of Indias founding prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was elected unopposed to head the party. He will take the reins from his mother Sonia, the partys longest-serving president, since 1998.

A Letter to POTUS on Infrastructure "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

During the presidential transition that took place at the beginning of last year, I was asked to provide my thoughts on how a Trump administration should prioritize what was anticipated to be up to a trillion dollars in infrastructure spending. It was an honor -- and a testament to how large the movement has grown -- to be asked to weigh in with some notes. I knew the odds of our foundational ideas being given serious weight was remote since, if asked what the federal government should do on infrastructure spending, I would have argued: the less the better. So, in the spirit of pragmatism, I tried a different approach.

The question we asked ourselves was this: If we're going to spend $1 trillion, how could that be done in the least damaging way? Using our framing, how could we limit the downside damage of a surge in infrastructure spending in 2017 and increase the likelihood that there would be some long term upside to these investments?

While he was roundly criticized for making the comment at the time, I was and remain sympathetic to Donald Rumsfield's observation during the war with Iraq that you go to war with the military you have, not the one you wished you had. At it's core, it's an acknowledgement that, particularly in major matters, we will never have the ideal set of conditions for moving ahead. Anyone who has successfully managed a complex system for any length of time grasps this intuitively, making reaction to Rumsfield's comments a litmus test of sorts for a certain type of competency. I referenced it in my comments as a way to signal that we grasp this limitation.

I ultimately framed my remarks as an open letter because it helped me think more like a politician and less like a policy advocate and because I thought it would be helpful for the communities that received this money to think about things in this way. The four point framing, while not universal, is simple to understand and, if followed, would generally produce better results than whatever is ultimately done.

Speaking of which, despite seemingly broad consensus among elected officials, policy advisers and pundits that the smartest course of action for the United States is to spend a colossal sum of federal money on infrastructure, we haven't done it. Perhaps it will happen in 2018, but perhaps not. I'm not going to take the credit for the hesitation, but every day this is put off we build more of a groundswell of opposition to our current infrastructure approach. If serious reform is not an option, here's to another year of inaction.

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing you on behalf of our Board of Directors and our membership regarding a potential...

Bitcoin futures rise as virtual currency hits major exchange "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Associated Press

Image may contain: 1 person, beard and closeup

CHICAGO (AP) The first-ever bitcoin future jumped after it began trading Sunday as the increasingly popular virtual currency made its debut on a major U.S. exchange.

The futures contract that expires in January surged more than $3,000 to $18,580 eight hours after trading launched on the Chicago Board Options Exchange. The contract opened at $15,000, according to data from the CBOE.

The CBOE futures dont involve actual bitcoin. Theyre securities that will track the price of bitcoin on Gemini, one of the larger bitcoin exchanges.

The start of trading at 5 p.m. CST overwhelmed the CBOE website. Due to heavy traffic on our website, visitors to may find that it is performing slower than usual and may at times be temporarily unavailable, the exchange said in a statement. But it said the trading in the futures had not been disrupted.

Another large futures exchange, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, will start trading its own futures on Dec. 18 but will use a composite of several bitcoin prices across a handful of exchanges.

The price of a bitcoin has soared since beginning the year below $1,000, hitting a peak of more than $16,858 Dec. 7 on the bitcoin exchange Coindesk. As of 1:15 a.m. CST, it was at $16,733.49 on Coindesk.

Futures are a type of contract in which a buyer and a seller agree on a price for a particular item to be delivered on a certain date in the future, hence the name. Futures are available for nearly every type of security but are most famously used in commodities such as wheat, soy, gold, oil, cocoa and, as dramatized in the Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd movie Trading Places, concentrated frozen orange juice.

The futures signal greater mainstream acceptance of bitcoin but also open up bitcoin to additional market forces. The futures will allow investors to bet that bitcoins price will go down a practice known as shorting which currently is very difficult to do.

There have been other attempts to bring bitcoin investing into the mainstream. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, twin brothers who own large amounts of bitcoin, tried to create an exchange-traded fund based on bitcoin, but federal regulators denied their application.

How much actual investor interest there will be in these bitcoin futures is stil...

'Nature' Editorial Juxtaposes FOIA Email Release With Illegal Hacking "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Submitted via IRC for SoyCow8317

Private emails between scientists working on a controversial genetic technology called "gene drive" were released last week. Obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, their publication has been criticized by some as an attempt to discredit the science community.

[...] The emails themselves, however, are news, and they were obtained in a lawful, straightforward way and were reported on by respected traditional news sources, such as The Guardian, which gave proper context to the files.

The release of these emails by [biosafety consultant Edward Hammond] who has a clear point-of-view on the issue, however, has led to yet another discussion of the proper way of publishing raw documents. Nature, one of the more respected and widely read science publishers, mentions the release of these emails in the same breath as emails that were obtained by illegal hacking in an editorial published this week:

The release of the e-mails echoes the way in which hackers released documents stolen from climate scientists before a major UN meeting in 2009. Much commentary on those documents suggestedwronglythat scientists were up to no good. Still, damage was done and public trust in scientists declined. It would be unfortunate if the trick were repeated here, not least because it is scientists working on gene drives who have raised many of the concerns.

Reality hacking firm opens research center in Bolingbrook (Fiction) "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Are we living inside a computer simulation?  Bolingbrooks newest business, The Neo Center for the Study of Reality Coding, intends to find out.

At a private grand opening ceremony, attended by Mayor Roger Claar and all the village trustees, CEO Daniel C. Lovecraft explained the company purpose:

Many billionaires, like Elon Musk, believe that the reality we live in is a computer simulation. Some have privately told us they want to escape the simulation or tweak it.  We want to help these folks, and with their funding, we might find the answer, eventually.

Lovecraft cited a Bank of America study that says the odds that we live in a simulation are between twenty and fifty percent.   He added that since the odds are in favor of our reality being a computer simulation, it is a worthy investment to crack realitys source code.

Imagine making little changes, like giving every human unlimited access to food and water Or even eliminating the need to eat or drink.  Everything is possible, including changes to our past.

Like changing the results of unjust elections? asked Trustee Maria Zarate.

Or eliminating the need for elections, entirely, replied Lovecraft.

I like that idea, said Trustee Deresa Hoogland.

Claar praised the companys decision to relocate to Bolingbrook.  This is a top company with good-paying jobs thats come here.  Just the other day, I praised McDonalds for rebuilding a store in Bolingbrook. Now you guys are here.  That proves to me that Bolingbrook is not only good for business, its also good for business research.

Yes, but did Roger give you a tax credit for locating your office here?

Storytelling is a more valued skill amongst some hunter-gatherer tribes "IndyWatch Feed World"

Among Filipino hunter-gatherers, storytelling is valued more than any other skill, and the best storytellers have the most children. Once upon a time, the sun and moon argued about who would light up the sky. They fought, as anthropomorphic celestial bodies are meant to do, but after the moon proves to be as strong as the sun, they decide to take shifts. The sun would brighten the day, while the moon would illuminate the night. This is one of several stories told by the Agta, a group of hunter-gatherers from the Philippines. They spend a lot of time spinning yarns to each other, and like their account of the sun and moon, many of these tales are infused with themes of cooperation and equality. That's no coincidence, says Andrea Migliano, an anthropologist at University College London.

On the night of Nov. 14, Roy Moores campaign for an Alabama Senate seat looked all but finished.

After five women came forward with accounts of Moores alleged sexual misconduct with them as teenagers, including one who was 14 years old, the GOP candidate was abandoned by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and many Republicans in Congress, and the Republican National Committee cut off his funding.

But it was an ultimatum from Fox News host Sean Hannity, delivered on his Nov. 14 broadcast, that posed the direst threat. For me, the judge has 24 hours, Hannity told his viewers, after excoriating Moore. You must immediately and fully come up with a satisfactory explanation for your inconsistencies. He added, If you cant do this, then Judge Moore needs to get out of the race. In 2017, a Republican candidate can overcome disapproval from party leaders, but losing the conservative media is usually fatal.

Four weeks later, Moores situation has entirely turned around: He not only survived, but leads his Democratic opponent in most polls. President Donald Trump has forcefully endorsed him. The RNC restored his funding. McConnell stopped saying he should quit and now says the people of Alabama should decide his fate. Most Republican voters there have decided the allegations are false: A...

Philippines Orders Probe Into Sanofi Dengue Vaccine for 730,000 Children "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Philippines ordered an investigation on Monday into the immunization of more than 730,000 children with a vaccine for dengue that has been suspended following an announcement by French drug company Sanofi that it could worsen the disease in some cases. The World Health Organization said it hoped to conduct a full review by year-end of data on the vaccine, commercially known as Dengvaxia. In the meantime, the WHO recommended that it only be used in people who had a prior infection with dengue. The government of Brazil, where dengue is a significant health challenge, confirmed it already had recommended restricted use of the vaccine but had not suspended it entirely. Amid mounting public concern, Sanofi explained its "new findings" at a news conference in Manila but did not say why action was not taken after a WHO report in mid-2016 that identified the risk it was now flagging. A non-governmental organization (NGO) said it had received information that three children who were vaccinated with Dengvaxia in the Philippines had died and a senator said he was aware of two cases. Last week, the Philippines Department of Health halted the use of Dengvaxia after Sanofi said it must be strictly limited due to evidence it can worsen the disease in people not previously exposed to the infection. Nearly 734,000 children aged 9 and over in the Philippines have received one dose of the vaccine as part of a program that cost 3.5 billion pesos ($69.54 million).

Note: This US government webpage states, "Since 1988, over 18,897 petitions have been filed with the VICP [Vaccine Injury Compensation Program]. Over that 29-year time period, 16,857 petitions have been adjudicated, with 5,782 of those determined to be compensable. Total compensation paid over the life of the program is approximately $3.7 billion." Why aren't these large numbers being reported in the media? Professor reveals aluminium in jabs may cause sufferers to have up 10 times more of the metal in their brains than is safe "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Aluminium in vaccines may cause autism, controversial new research suggests. Autistic children have up to 10 times more of the metal in their brains than what is considered safe in adults, a study found. Study author Professor Chris Exley from Keele University, said: 'Perhaps we now have the link between vaccination and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the link being the inclusion of an aluminium adjuvant in the vaccine.' The researchers speculate autism sufferers may have genetic changes that cause them to accumulate aluminium which healthy people are able to remove. Research at Keele University, published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, provides the strongest indication yet that aluminium is a cause of ASD. The aluminium content of brain tissues from five donors who died with a diagnosis of ASD was found to be extraordinarily high; some of the highest values yet measured in human brain tissue. Why for example, would one of the four major brain lobes of a 15-year-old boy with autism be 8.74 (11.59) micrograms/g dry weight - a value which is at least 10 times higher than might be considered as acceptable for an adult never mind a child? The new evidence strongly suggests aluminium is entering the brain in ASD via inflammatory cells which have become loaded up with aluminium in the blood and/or lymph, much as has been for certain immune cells at injection sites for vaccines that contain aluminium to increase the body's immune response.

Pentagon: 'Troubling' Lapses in Giving Criminal Data to FBI "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The Pentagon's watchdog agency said Tuesday it found a "troubling" number of failures this year by military law enforcement agencies to alert the FBI to criminal history information. The Pentagon's inspector general happened to be wrapping up a monthslong review of compliance with reporting requirements when former Air Force member Devin P. Kelley opened fire in a Sutherland Springs, Texas, church on Nov. 5, killing 25 people. Kelley had been convicted of assaulting family members in a 2012 court martial ... but the information was not passed on to the FBI as required by Pentagon regulations. The lapse, acknowledged by the Air Force, meant he was not flagged in databases used for background checks of gun buyers. Tuesday's report said that from February through October, the military's law enforcement organizations failed to submit 24 percent of required fingerprint cards for inclusion in FBI databases and 31 percent of required reports of court martial convictions, known as final disposition reports. The data is supposed to be submitted to the FBI for many offenses, including assault, murder and desertion. The Army's failure rate on fingerprint reporting was 28 percent, the Navy's and Marine Corps' both were 29 percent. The Air Force's was 14 percent. The Army failed to submit final disposition reports in 41 percent of cases; the Navy and the Marine Corps in 36 percent of cases, and the Air Force in 14 percent of cases.

Veterans, grappling with PTSD, are helping to boost public support for medical marijuana "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Against the backdrop of the nation's largest Veterans Day parade, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this month he'd sign legislation making New York the latest in a fast-rising tide of states to OK therapeutic pot as a PTSD treatment, though it's illegal under federal law. Twenty-eight states plus the District of Columbia now include PTSD in their medical marijuana programs, a tally that has more than doubled in the last two years. The increase has come amid increasingly visible advocacy from veterans' groups. Retired Marine staff sergeant Mark DiPasquale says the drug freed him from the 17 opioids, anti-anxiety pills and other medications that were prescribed to him for migraines, post-traumatic stress and other injuries from service that included a hard helicopter landing in Iraq in 2005. In a sign of how much the issue has taken hold among veterans, the 2.2-million-member American Legion began pressing the federal government this summer to let Department of Veterans Affairs doctors recommend medical marijuana where it's legal. The Legion started advocating last year for easing federal constraints on medical pot research, a departure into drug policy for the nearly century-old organization. "People ask, `Aren't you the law-and-order group?' Why, yes, we are," Executive Director Verna Jones said at a Legion-arranged news conference early this month at the U.S. Capitol. But "when veterans come to us and say a particular treatment is working for them, we owe it to them to listen and to do scientific research required."

Note: This Associated Press article no longer appears on CNBC's website. Here's an alternate link for the complete article. The illegal drug MDMA was recently fast tracked for FDA approval after preliminary studies found it to be effective for treating PTSD in a therapeutic context. While police in the US arrest more people for marijuana use than for all violent crimes combined, articles like these suggest that the healing potentials of mind-altering drugs are gaining mainstream credibility.

Report: Industry hid decades-old study showing sugar's unhealthy effects "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

More than four decades ago, a study in rats funded by the sugar industry found evidence linking the sweetener to heart disease and bladder cancer. The results of that study were never made public. Instead, the sugar industry pulled the plug on the study and buried the evidence, said senior researcher Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine and director of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. Glantz likened this to suppressed Big Tobacco internal research linking smoking with heart disease and cancer. "This was an experiment that produced evidence that contradicted the scientific position of the sugar industry," Glantz said. "It certainly would have contributed to increasing our understanding of the cardiovascular risk associated with eating a lot of sugar, and they didn't want that." Researchers at the University of Birmingham in England conducted Project 259 between 1967 and 1971, comparing how lab rats fared when fed table sugar versus starch. The scientists specifically looked at how gut bacteria processed the two different forms of carbohydrate. Early results in August 1970 indicated that rats fed a high-sugar diet experienced an increase in blood levels of triglycerides, a type of fat that contributes to cholesterol. Rats fed loads of sugar also appeared to have elevated levels of beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme previously associated with bladder cancer in humans, the researchers said.

Buy Nothing Project: free clothes, toys, food - even a wedding "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When Erika Dudra moved to Beacon Hill two years ago, she didn't know any of her neighbors. Dudra soon discovered a Facebook group called Buy Nothing Beacon Hill North. The premise of the group was simple: Offer up something that you don't need, or ask for something you do need. She joined to get rid of a couch, but then started asking for baby things. As a result, "I have a 2-year-old now who basically cost me nothing," she said. When Dudra remarried ... she threw a "Buy Nothing wedding" with a donated dress, cake, decor, flowers, an American Sign Language interpreter for deaf relatives and a wedding photographer. To participants, Buy Nothing is about more than just fighting consumer culture, though. Today, all of Dudra's best friends are people she met on Buy Nothing. Since this network was started in 2013 ... members and volunteers have spread the Buy Nothing gospel to more than half a million people in 20 countries. Buy Nothing co-founder Liesl Clark likes to say the project is one-half internet giveaway group and one-half prehistoric Himalayan economics. Inspiration comes from high up in the Himalayas, where Clark has filmed archaeology documentaries for National Geographic and the PBS series "NOVA." In 2007, Clark visited a village in the Upper Mustang area of Nepal that didn't operate on currency. Instead, the village of Samdzong operated on a "gift economy" when a villager needed something, she or he would simply ask. Residents kept communal goats and sheep and took turns watching each other's fields.

High schooler spreads the message that nobody should have to dine alone "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

When the lunch bell rings at Boca Raton High School in Florida, 3,400 kids spill into the courtyard and split into their social groups. But not everyone gets included. Someone always sits alone. "It's not a good feeling, like you're by yourself. And that's something that I don't want anybody to go through," said Denis Estimon. Denis is a Haitian immigrant. When he came here in first grade, he says he felt isolated - especially at lunch. So with some friends, Denis started a club called "We Dine Together." Their mission is to go into the courtyard at lunchtime to make sure no one is starving for company. For new kids especially, the club is a godsend. Since it started last year, hundreds of friendships have formed - some very unlikely. Jean Max Meradieu said he met kids he would never "ever" meet on the football team. Jean actually quit the football team - gave up all perks that come with it - just so he could spend more time with this club. "I don't mind not getting a football scholarship," Jean said. "This is what I really want to do." Just imagine how different your teenage years would have been, if the coolest kids in school all of a sudden decided you mattered. Since we first told this story, Denis has graduated from high school - but not from this mission. He's now travelling the country, opening "We Dine Together" chapters at other schools - 15 so far, with more than 100 slated for the new year. And if we're lucky, when he's done showing kids how to make outsiders feel accepted, he can teach the rest of us.

New study: Gorillas fare better in logged forests than chimps "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

As timber companies move into Central Africas forests, apes increasingly have to find ways to survive in the altered forests they call home. Scientists still dont know the full impact of logging on many animals, but now a new study suggests that gorillas stand a better chance of adapting to thinned-out forests than chimpanzees. The research, published Nov. 26 in the journal Biological Conservation, finds that logging initially drives out both western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and central chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes). But later on, the unique ways in which each species reacts leads to a divergence in their responses. Because gorillas arent territorial, theyll slip right back into those areas and groups will feed relatively close to each other, Dave Morgan, a biologist with the Lincoln Park Zoo and an author of the study, said in an interview. The researchers found that chimpanzees were less likely to return to logged forests. Photo by Rhett A. Butler/Mongabay. Chimpanzees, on the other hand, react a bit differently. They wont tolerate other communities feeding next to them, Morgan said. Theyll go to battle, to the death sometimes. How apes fare in logging forests was a perplexing question for Morgan and his colleagues, he said, because both chimps and gorillas are intelligent and adaptable animals that have colonized a variety of habitats across Africa. Between 2004 and 2012, researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project, which Morgan co-directs, counted the number of chimpanzee and gorilla nests along

Harvard Immunologist: Unvaccinated Children Pose ZERO Risk to Anyone and Heres Why "IndyWatch Feed World"

Tetyana Obukhanych, PhD, Truthstream
Waking Times Media

Dear Legislator:

My name is Tetyana Obukhanych. I hold a PhD in Immunology. I am writing this letter in the hope that it will correct several common misperceptions about vaccines in order to help you formulate a fair and balanced understanding that is supported by accepted vaccine theory and new scientific findings.

Do unvaccinated children pose a higher threat to the public than the vaccinated?

It is often stated that those who choose not to vaccinate their children for reasons of conscience endanger the rest of the public, and this is the rationale behind most of the legislation to end vaccine exemptions currently being considered by federal and state legislators country-wide. You should be aware that the nature of protection afforded by many modern vaccines and that includes most of the vaccines recommended by the CDC for children is not consistent with such a statement. I have outlined below the recommended vaccines that cannot prevent transmission of disease either because they are not designed to prevent the transmission of infection (rather, they are intended to prevent disease symptoms), or because they are for non-communicable diseases. People who have not received the vaccines mentioned below pose no higher threat to the general public than those who have, implying that discrimination against non-immunized children in a public school setting may not be warranted.

IPV (inactivated poliovirus vaccine) cannot prevent transmission of poliovirus. Wild poliovirus has been non-existent in the USA for at least two decades. Even if wild poliovirus were to be re-imported by travel, vaccinating for polio with IPV cannot affect the safety of public spaces. Please note that wild poliovirus eradication is attributed to the use of a different vaccine, OPV or oral poliovirus vaccine. Despite being capable of preventing wild poliovirus transmission, use of OPV was phased out long ago in the USA and replaced with IPV due to safety concerns.

Tetanus is not a contagious disease, but rather acquired from deep-puncture wounds contaminated with C. tetani spores. Vaccinating for tetanus (via the DTaP combination vaccine) cannot alter the safety of...

Caracas: President Nicolas Maduro set his sights on Venezuelas 2018 presidential election after the ruling Socialist Party predictably dominated mayoral polls with the help of a partial boycott by a demoralized opposition.

The 55-year-old successor to Hugo Chavez, enjoying a political breather after a year of ferocious domestic protests and damaging foreign sanctions, said the government had won at least 90 percent of the 335 mayorships in Sundays election.

Latest official results gave him 41 of 42 mayorships counted. No one doubted the socialists big win given three of the biggest opposition parties were abstaining.

The elections left Maduro favorite to be the socialists candidate in next years presidential ra...

Screener Piracy Season Kicks Off With Louis C.K.s I Love You, Daddy "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Towards the end of the year, movie screeners are sent out to industry insiders who cast their votes for the Oscars and other awards.

Its a highly anticipated time for pirates who hope to get copies of the latest blockbusters early, which is traditionally what happens.

Last year the action started relatively late. It took until January before the first leak surfaced Denzel Washingtons Fences
but more than a dozen made their way online soon after.

Today the first leak of the new screener season started to populate various pirate sites, Louis C.K.s I Love You, Daddy. It was released by the infamous Hive-CM8 group which also made headlines in previous years.

I Love You, Daddy was carefully chosen, according to a message posted in the release notes. Last month distributor The Orchard chose to cancel the film from its schedule after Louis C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct. With uncertainty surrounding the films release, Hive-CM8 decided to get it out.

We decided to let this one title go out this month, since it never made it to the cinema, and nobody knows if it ever will go to retail at all, Hive-CM8 write in their NFO.

Either way their is no perfect time to release it anyway, but we think it would be a waste to let a great Louis C.K. go unwatched and nobody can even see or buy it, they add.

I Love You, Daddy

It is no surprise that the group put some thought into their decision. In 2015 they published several movies before their theatrical release, for which they later offered an apology, stating that this wasnt acceptable.

Last year this stance was reiterated, noting that they would not leak any screeners before Christmas. Todays release shows that this isnt a golden rule, but its unlikely that they will push any big titles before theyre out in theaters.

I Love You, Daddy isnt going to be seen in theaters anytime soon, but it might see an official release. This past weekend, news broke that L...

Questions to Ask Yourself About Radical Islam "IndyWatch Feed War"

In this era of fake news, clarity matters. When propagandists working for the Muslim Brotherhood and other terrorist-aligned groups are intentionally trying to blur the meanings of words and misrepresent facts, it is vital to be clear about what you want, what your red lines are and what you are willing to compromise on. This will enable you to argue better and have more productive conversations both on and offline about this issue.

EUs Mogherini condemns all attacks on Jews everywhere Time to restart meaningful dialogue aimed at reaching peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP | EU foreign ministers are to urge Netanyahu to restart meaningful dialogue aimed at reaching peace with the Palestinians.

BRUSSELS (AFP)  The EUs diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini on Monday condemned all attacks on Jews everywhere in the world as she met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Brussels.Foreign ministers from the 28-member bloc are set to urge Netanyahu making the first visit to the EU by an Israeli premier in more than two decades to restart meaningful dialogue aimed at reaching peace with the Palestinians.

The visit comes after US President Donald Trump officially recognised Jerusalem as the Israeli capital a move widely condemned by international leaders but which Netanyahu said made peace possible.

Let me condemn in the strongest possible way all attacks on Jews everywhere in the world, including in Europe, and on Israel and on Israeli citizens, Mogherini said ahead of an informal breakfast meeting between Netanyahu and the EU foreign ministers.

Her remarks come after Netanyahu criticised Europe for hypocrisy for condemning Trumps announcement but not rockets fired into Israel from Gaza.

She said the worst thing that can happen now is an escalation of tensions, of violence and restated the EUs position that a two-state solution with Jerusalem as capital for both Israelis and Palestinians was the only sustainable way to resolve the conflict.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital and previous peace plans have stumbled over debates on whether and how to divide sovereignty or oversee holy sites.

Maharashtras Poor Struggle as Government Drastically Cuts Quota of Subsidised Foodgrain "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

The state government believes that families with one or two members are unlikely to use 35 kg grain per month and will sell the extra in the black market.

Currently, Maharashtra has 25 lakh families registered under the AAY, including tribals and landless labourers. Credit: PTI

Pune: Sadhana Jogat, a 37-year-old woman from Masale Choudhari village in the Solapur district of Maharashtra, is struggling to put food on her plate. Sadhana, who earns around Rs 2,000 a month from her small ironing shop, used to receive 35 kg grain under the public distribution system (PDS). But now her name has been transferred from the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) to the Priority House Holds (PHH) list, which means she is entitled to only five kg foodgrain at subsidised prices.

Over six lakh families that were earlier receiving 35 kg grain at subsidised rates are now only entitled to five kg grain per head. For these families, surviving on five kg grain is proving to be difficult. However, the government of Maharashtra thinks otherwise. It believes that most of the time, beneficiaries of the PDS sell the food allotted to them in the black market.

Last month, the state government decided to do something about this wastage and asked district officials to shift families with one or two members from the AAY list to the PHH list.

According to the government, over 3.5 lakh families out of the total 25 lakh under the AAY scheme in the state have one or two members. It believes that they are unlikely to use 35 kg grain per month and the extra grains will be sold in the black market.

Currently, Maharashtra has 25 lakh families registered under the...

Donald Trump Is Not Constitutionally Immune from an Obstruction of Justice Charge "IndyWatch Feed War"

By DAVID FRENCH December 4, 2017 2:42 PM @DAVIDAFRENCH

National Review

Earlier today one of Donald Trumps lawyers, John Dowd, made a rather remarkable assertion. He declared that the President cannot obstruct justice because he is the chief law enforcement officer under [the Constitutions Article II] and has every right to express his view of any case.

This statement is wrong. To be clear, the presidents power under the Constitution limits the presidents vulnerability to obstruction of justice charges, but it does not end it.

For example, our own Andrew McCarthy wrote about some of those limits today: The FBI and the Justice Department are not a separate branch of government; they are subordinates of the president delegated to exercise his power, not their own.

Even on Comeys account, Trump did not order him to shut down the Flynn investigation, even though he could have. Trump could have ordered an end of the Russia counterintelligence investigation, but he did not.

He could have pardoned Flynn, which would effectively have ended the FBIs criminal investigation beyond any possibility of review. We can stipulate that these would have been sleazy things to do, potentially damaging to national security, and still grasp that the president had the undeniable power to do them. Similarly, the president had undeniable power to fire the FBI director.

You can argue that his reason was corrupt, but the truth is that he didnt need a reason at all he could have done it because it was Tuesday and he felt like firing someone; he could have done it because he figured that the Justice Departments criticism of Comeys handling of the Clinton emails investigation gave him the political cover he needed to dispense with a subordinate he found nettlesome.

The point is that even if the president hoped that cashiering Comey would derail an investigation he was addled by, it was wholly in Trumps discretion to fire the director. Moreover, firing the director did not derail the Russia investigation; it has proceeded apace under the director whom Trump appointed to replace Comey. Lets assume for the sake of argument that the president cannot violate a federal statute by exercising powers guaranteed the president by the Constitution.

He is not, however, above the law when acting outside of his Constitutional authority. With that in mind, read the key language of the most relevant federal statute, 18 U.S.C. Section 1505: Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the Unit...

State of Fear: How History"s Deadliest Bombing Campaign Created Today"s Crisis in Korea "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

To this day, the firebombing of North Koreas cities, towns, and villages remains virtually unknown to the general public and unacknowledged in media discussions of the crisis, despite the obvious relevance to North Koreas pursuit of a nuclear deterrent. Yet without knowing and confronting these facts, the American public cannot begin to comprehend the fear that lies at the heart of North Korean attitudes and actions.

ERYC: The Indomitable Peter ROBINSON Back on the Front Foot

  • an In My View article by NIGEL WARD, up-dating readers on the approaching climax to the process of attempting to bring to an end the questionable political career of Councillor Stephen PARNABY [Con.], Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Regular readers will be aware of the long-running saga concerning a number of grave allegations made by Cottingham developer Mr Peter ROBINSON (inter alia) against ERYC Leader Councillor Stephen PARNABY [Con.].

At a hearing of the ERYC Standards Committee on 7th November 2016, a raft of Formal Complaints against Councillor PARNABY were thrown out by the astonishing expedient of simply disregarding those to which no defence had been entered and failing to uphold some of the less serious allegations, on the recommendation of the Councils chief legal Officer, Mathew BUCKLEY, based on a tightly-constrained  internal investigation conducted by Gemma PERCY, a lower-order Council solicitor. (Full story in the Hull Daily Mail, here). One Councillor, of lengthy service, described the procedure as being roughly akin to trying a man for fraud before a jury of his own choosing.

All this in sharp contrast to the trumped-up hearing against Councillor Andy STRANGEWAY [Ind.] in which, astonishingly, some of the complaints were actually upheld (with sanctions applied far beyond the Sub-Committees legal authority), though that particular charade will not play out until the first Full Council meeting of the New Year. Councillor STRANGEWAY, remember, was the first to publish about the Leaders feet of clay.

And still ERYC has not grasped the root purpose of Councillor STRANGEWAYs Standards engagement to demonstrate that the present arrangements are not fit for purpose. The outcome of the PARNABY hearing adds weight to Councillor STRANGEWAYs contention; both hearings have achieved nothing, whilst wasting probably 20k-30k of the public purse.

Seven Things You Can Do to Support the J20 Defendants : As the Trials Get Underway "IndyWatch Feed War"

On January 20, 2017, while Trump was being sworn in as president, police trapped over 200 protesters, medics, legal observers, and journalists on a block in downtown Washington, DC and mass-arrested all of them. Police confiscated their cell phones and broke into them, seized their social media data, even raided their homes. In April, the US Attorneys Office pressed the same 8 felony charges indiscriminately against all the arrestees. Today, 193 defendants are facing six decades in prison just for attending a protest.

The Trump administration wants to set a precedent so they can argue that anyone wearing black in vicinity of a broken window is participating in a conspiracy and deserves to spend the rest of his or her life in prison.

Their goal is to criminalize protest itself. The prosecution has based their case on claiming that basic elements of large protests are evidence of a conspiracy to riot and commit acts of vandalism. As evidence, they are citing normal protest activities such preparing for the possibility of arrest, the presence of street medics and legal observers in case of police or fascist violence, and even sharing information about public plans to assemble. The outcome of this case could have disastrous consequences on all dissent in the United States.
