Russias new revolutionaries hoped to repeat Ukraines EuroMaidan scenario, but this Russian Maidan did not happen. On 5 November, more than 400 people were detained 302 of them in Moscow. Many arrestees had weapons confiscated from them. (There were clearly less protesters on Russias streets than the security services anticipated.) At the same time, the security services conducted a series of raids across Russia, with 14 alleged activists of Artpodgotovka detained with ready-made Molotov cocktails and explosive devices in their possession.

JAKARTA Marsudi has mixed feelings about the visit earlier this month by Indonesian President Joko Jokowi Widodo to his small village of Nganduk in East Java province. On the one hand, it was cause for celebration as Jokowi handed out permits to the 58 members of Marsudis farmers association that would allow them to manage and protect a swath of nearby forest part of the presidents flagship land reform program. But on the other hand, the permits were only the first in a series of hurdles to overcome before the plan can become reality. Truthfully, I felt pessimistic right after the presidents visit, Marsudi says. Because usually when theres a festive ceremony [like the visit], the impact only lasts for two or three months. Marsudi was among dozens of farmers from across Java who spoke at an event at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in early November in honor of the permits they received as part of Jokowis social forestry program. Under the program, indigenous and other rural communities will gain greater control over 127,000 square kilometers (49,034 square miles) of land, nearly 15 percent of Indonesias total land area. Marsudi and his fellow farmers received 35-year leases to manage idle or degraded forest land owned by state plantation company Perhutani, which controls 24,000 square kilometers (9,266 square miles) of plantations throughout Java. During the first week of November, Jokowi handed out permits to 5,915 farmers from 22 farmers associations in Java to manage a combined 95.5 square

Once again crooks succeeded in publishing a malware in the official Google Play Store deceiving the anti-malware protections implemented by the tech giant.
The android malware is also able to intercept text messages and delete them from the victims device, in this way it could bypass 2FA implemented by banks.
Google removed at least four previous versions of this banking trojan from the Play Store from the beginning of the year, but crooks always succeeded in proposing a new variant infecting victims of major banks worldwide.
Another set of malicious apps has made it into the official Android app store. Detected by ESET security systems as Android/TrojanDropper.Agent.BKY, these apps form a new family of multi-stage Android malware, legitimate-looking and with delayed onset of malicious activity. reads the analysis published by ESET.
We have discovered eight apps of this malware family on Google Play and notified Googles security team about the issue. Google has removed all eight apps from its store; users with Google Play Protect enabled are protected via this mechanism.

Cuomo Ignored Sex Assault by Aide, 1896 Synopsis:Heres what a real sexual harassment complaint looks like. Lisa Marie Cater a former DMV employee in upstate New York, has just filed a lawsuit against New York Gov. Cuomo for refusing to act on 6 sexual assault charges she made against his buddy, Sam Hoyt, the former regional president of Empire State Development Corp. Cater complained to the Governors office no less than six times about Hoyt, but was met with deliberate indifference. Sam Hoyt grew up in New York politics. He took over his late fathers New York State Assembly seat in 1992. While a 41-year-old lawmaker, Hoyt, was caught having an affair with a 23-year-old student intern in 2008. Despite his history, Cuomo appointed his fellow Dem to the lucrative economic development position in 2011. In 2015, Cater was the victim of domestic abuse and Hoyt got her the DMV secretarial job at a salary of $30,000. According to Cater: He hung this job over my head. I felt like a possession of his. One day, Hoyt rang her doorbell at home when she opened the door, he groped her, kissed her and left her in a state of shock. Fearful that she would lose her job, she adopted a go-along to get along attitude. But there was no stopping Hoyt. He called, emailed and texted her daily, even when he was vacationing with his wife. The 5-foot-10 Cater once received a nude photo of the 5-foot-7 Hoyt. Cater began to shake uncontrollably after receiving it, her suit states. Cater feared Hoyts instability and anger. She started trying to contact Hoyts boss, the governor, to get some relief. Support Our Sponsors: - Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. AFP/File | Frances President Emmanuel Macron (left) meets with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in New York on September 18, 2017
Our presence in Iraq and Syria is at the invitation of the governments of those countries to fight terrorism, Rouhani was quoted as saying in a telephone call with Macron.
Rouhani said Iran does not seek to dominate the region, but was instead working for peace and security and to avoid the dismembering of countries.
The comments come days after Frances foreign minister sparked Tehrans ire by accusing it of hegemonic ambitions in the Middle East.
Macron who has pledged to visit Iran in 2018 on Friday insisted that France wants a dialogue with Tehran.
Macron has been heavily involved in trying to defuse a crisis in Lebanon over the resignation of premier Saad Hariri that ramped up tensions between Iran and regional rival Saudi Arabia.

The deteriorating situation of minorities in Pakistan is leaving few options for their survival in the country. Every year, more than 5,000 families from religious minorities leave Pakistan.
Pastor Siddique Sindhu is just one example of a Christian who fled after surviving brutal torture due to his work as a Christian pastor. He is currently in the U.S., hoping to seek asylum.
The following is his personal account of what he endured as a Christian that forced him to flee his home and country:

from Pakistan. I started my career as a government servant in the 90s working for the Motorway Project of the National High Authority.
I experienced a calling to serve God, and therefore, I resigned from my job and trained for year to be a pastor. I was ordained in August 2001.
After two years working in the Christian community, local Muslims started accusing me of converting Muslims to Christianity. In my many talks with them, I tried to make it clear that I was a messenger only, and that if people accepted Christianity, it was God working.
My wife, children and I started worrying that the situation was becoming dangerous for us. On April 19, 2007, while coming from my church, I was kidnapped and taken to a location I did not recognize.
I soon realized that many of the kidnappers were the same people who had send me threatening messages during my work as pastor. As they had demanded before, they wanted just one thing that I accept Islam. I refused straightaway.
Thats when they started torturing me, eventually breaking both of my legs. Afterwards, they screamed at me and tried to force me to stand up. (I was semi-conscious and incapable of obeying them.) They continued to hit me, trying to fracture my skull.
I remember hearing one of the leaders say I should be left in the middle of the road so people would know what happens to people who try to...
Orrin Hatch came from nothing, and he made it.
In office for 40 years, hes president pro tempore of the Senate, and chairs the powerful committee writing the Senate GOPs tax plan. Hes using that perch, he explained last week, so that everybody can have the same chance he did.
As the Senate put the finishing touches on its tax bill in his Finance Committee last week, Hatch got into it with Ohio Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown, who was lambasting the bill as a giveaway for the rich.
I come from the poor people. And Ive been here working my whole entire stinkin career for people who dont have a chance. And I really resent anyone saying that Im just doing this for the rich. Gimme a break, Hatch told Brown. I come from the lower middle class originally. We didnt have anything. So dont spew that stuff on me. I get a little tired of that crap.
Hatch, satisfied with the exchange, shared a video of it on social media, adding a few narrative details.
I grew up in a shack with a Meadow Gold Dairy sign for a wall. I worked as a janitor to pay for law school. I believe in opportunity because Ive lived it.
Orrin Hatch (@OrrinHatch) November 17, 2017
Hatch went to to the University of Pittsburgh Law School on a scholarship when tuition there ranged from $1,100 to $1,300 per year.
The bottom tax rate in 1960 was 20 percent, which would have put Hatchs tax bill at around $780 for the waiver. In an interview with the local Utah press in 2015, the senator described his ordeal, which at the time was tax free. It was a blessing to me that I had that honors sc...

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake shook Monterey County last Monday, and the area hasn't stopped shaking since. Last week's widely-felt quake was centered 13 miles northeast of Gonzales, along the San Andreas Fault. Since then, there have been 134 earthquakes within 5 kilometers (or about 3 miles) of the epicenter, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. However, most of those aftershocks weren't felt by the Central Coast. Only 17 were stronger than a 2.5 magnitude and six were greater than 3.0, said Ole Kaven, a seismologist with the USGS.

An unknown epidemic has caused the death of hundreds of cattle at Gumabirsinghur village under this block in Ganjam district. "There have been no visible symptoms. The cattle are found dead everywhere in forest, riverside, canals, hills and farmlands in the village. This condition has been occurring for the last three days," locals said. The deadly issue came to the fore after the affected farmers brought the matter to the notice of Berhampur sub-collector. Surprisingly, the veterinary department has failed to tackle the disease as the cause of the outbreak of the disease is yet to be ascertained. The unknown epidemic has spread panic among locals who held the administration responsible. Among the many farmers who had lost their cattle were Jagili Gouda, Bauri Gouda, Dhaneswar Pradhan, Balram Pradhan, Sudam Pradhan, L Panda, L Seemanchal, Narsingh Gouda, M Andha, D Bijay, K Trinath and M Kameshu.
The Price of Salt and Spring Fire are both well known, especially Highsmiths Price of Salt. Spring Fire started the Lesbian pulp genre, and the author, Marijane Meaker, was always unhappy about the forced ending she had to do. As for Satan Was A Lesbian, people may not know the story, but its probably one of the best known pulp covers, which has been reproduced on all manner of goods.
After the 2016 presidential election, I was one of many who spontaneously posted an all-black image to social media. In the immediate aftermath of Trumps victory, there was a need to express something along with the sense that nothing could express that mix of fear, frustration and grief that hit last Nov. 9. An all-black image with its deathly/funereal associations was all that fit.
Brooklyn-based artist Robert Longo (born 1953) may have been acting on similar impulses when he made Untitled (Obama Leaving) (2017). The piece, like most of his work, is a large-scale charcoal drawing. One of its paired panels shows Barack Obama and his entourage walking off an airport tarmac, the ex-Presidents facial expression the combination of hope and resignation that he so often wore. The second panel, though, is pure darkness the whole sheet of paper covered with charcoal dust. The juxtaposition suggests a slight movement through time, like a comic-book page or film stills: from a grim but palpable present to some unimaginable future.
This work is part of Proof, currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum, which puts Longos work alongside that of Sergei Eisenstein and Francisco Goya. The Brooklyn Museum has lately presented a streak of progressive-minded, socially conscious exhibitions. This show is part of that, but it comes to its politics in a stranger, more elliptical way. Rather than trying to rally viewers around any particular cause, it asks them to question the nature of proof the ways reality is mediated, codified, distorted and dramatized. Dramatized, especially: The art is almost all striking, severe imagery, delivering its various looming horrors in stark black and white.
The show begins with Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948), the gifted Russian filmmaker who defined the powers of cinematic montage, while also chronicling Soviet history in films like Battleship Potemkin (1925) and October (Ten Days that Shook the World) (1927-28). Seven of his films are displayed simultaneously, with no sound or titles, and slowed to a crawl: Whats left are his cinematographic images which, frame by frame, convey a wondrously melodramatic sort of old-fashioned pathos.

BEIRUT (Reuters) France can play a productive role in the Middle East by taking a realistic and impartial approach, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in a phone call on Tuesday, according to Iranian state media.
Tensions between Iran and France increased last week after Macron said that Tehran should be less aggressive in the region and should clarify its ballistic missile program.
Iranian state media said Rouhani told Macron that the Islamic Republic was ready to develop its relations with France on all bilateral, regional and international issues based on mutual respect and shared goals.
Rouhani referred to the adventurism of some inexperienced princes in the region- an allusion to Irans arch geopolitical rival Saudi Arabia and said France could play a positive role in easing the situation.
We are against adventurism and creating division in the region and believe that France, by keeping an independent vote and its position in the region, can, with a realistic and impartial approach, have a productive role, he said.
The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and other Arab states criticized Iran and its Lebanese Shiite Muslim ally Hezbollah at talks in Cairo on Sunday, calling for a united front to counter Iranian influence.
Rouhani also highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in Lebanon and, in the phone call with Macron, noted what he characterized as the threat posed by Israel.
Hezbollah are a part of the Lebanese people and are incredibly loved in this country. Their weapons are only defensi...
Opioids are mind-control drugs: MKULTRA is alive and well
by Jon Rappoport
November 21, 2017
Wikipedia: [MKULTRA was] the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects, at times illegal, designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency. Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations and torture in order to weaken the individual to force confessions through mind controlMKUltra used numerous methodologies to manipulate peoples mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals
A worldwide population enslaved to mind-control drugsthis is a dream that exceeds the fantasies of the old CIA MKULTRA warriors. And its here.
A few adverse effects of opioids: sedation, psychological dependence, physical addiction, hallucinations, delirium, brain fog, lowered level of consciousness, and thus, increased suggestibility.
Opioid effects may not be as overtly dramatic as those of MKULTRA LSD, but the overall impact on the mind is just as severe.
As Ive shown in past articles, a major pipeline for opioids starts at the top of the food chain: pharma manufacturers like Purdue and Insys, who are traffickers. (note to reader: Opioid archive here.)
This follows the pattern of LSD, which in the 1960s was manufactured by Sandoz (and then obtained in large quantities by the CIA for MKULTRA). However, now, there is no need for the CIA. Huge shipments of opioids go directly to rogue pharmacies and pain clinics, who are lower level dealers, and then on to addicts.
Mind control has gone public in a huge wayfar beyond the reach of LSD in the 1960s and 70s.
In fact, Congress and former President Barack Obama have played a major role in protection of the pharmaceutical traffickers. This assist occurred in April of 2016, when a new law was passed and signed by Obama: Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016.
The whole thrust of that law was to create a much higher barrier, blocking the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from freezing pharmas huge opioid shipments to lower level traffickers.
The Washington Post, which did a long piece on that law, reached out to Obama and his then Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, but both of them declined to comment. Well, enablers o...

When I first wrote about the interstellar interloper now called Oumuamua, I made reference to Arthur C. Clarkes Rendezvous with Rama because of the delightful symmetry between the novel and the object, though noting that were unlikely to find that A/2017 U1 is as intriguing as Clarkes mysterious starship bound for the Magellanics (see An Interstellar Visitor?). Still, an interstellar object entering the Solar System only to go careening back out of it could not help but recall Clarke, whose asteroid 31/439 wound up being artificial.
Then came the paper from Karen Meech (University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, where the object was first detected with the Pan-STARRS1 telescope). Drawing on data from telescopes around the world, Meechs team has been able to characterize our first nearby object from another stellar system, with equally delightful results. For it turns out that Oumuamua (pronounced oh MOO-uh MOO-uh) has an unusual axis ratio, being about ten times longer than it is wide. Jim Benford couldnt resist suggesting I show a cover from Rendezvous with Rama depicting just such an axis ratio, and I agreed wholeheartedly.
Any science fiction fan familiar with Clarke (and are there any who arent?) will have fun with the similarities, but how much do we actually know about Oumuamua? Meechs team based its conclusions on the objects shape on the fact that its brightness changed so dramatically as it rotated (spinning on its axis every 7.3 hours). Lance Benner, who specializes in radar imaging of near-Earth and main-belt asteroids at JPL, calls the axis ratio here truly extraordinary. We know of no Solar System objects elongated more than 3 times longer than they are wide.
Nothing in our Solar System, in other words, quite matches an object shaped like this. Of course, it might also look like the image below, courtesy of the European Southern Observatory.

Weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin literally makes a killing off of killing. Last year, while the company was grossing $43.4 billion in arms sales, an estimated 157,000 people around the globe were killed in violent conflicts. For leadership of this industry of death, CEO Marillyn Hewson was paid $20 million. The federal contracts Lockheed Martin receives total more than the budgets of 22 US states (not surprising, given that the company spends around $13 million lobbying annually) and does business with 70 nations.
Lockheed Martin boasts on its website that it has been selling arms to Israel since 1971. The companys notorious F-16 fighter jet came into Israels possession in 1980, two years before Israels first war with Lebanon. Since that time, the companys fighter jets have been integral to Israels brutal military campaigns in Lebanon and Palestine.
Israels 2006 invasion of Lebanon involved wide use of F-16 fighter jets and the Lockheed Martin Multiple-Launch Rocket System (MLRS) which sprayed cluster bombs across the Lebanese countryside. Between July 12 and August 14 2006, over 1,000 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, were killed. Comparatively, 12 Israeli soldiers and 43 Israeli civilians were killed by Hezbollah rockets. Human Rights Watch concluded that the cause of such a high civilian death rate was Israels frequent failure to abide by a fundamental obligation of the laws of war: the duty to distinguish between military targets, which can be legitimately attacked, and civilians, who are not subject to attack.
Lockheed Martin weapons played a major role in Israels 2008-2009 and 2014 assaults on Gaza. An extensive investigation by Amnesty International into Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009, which killed 1,394 Palestinians, including 345 children, found that Israels at....

Former IRS director Lois Lerner told a federal court last week that she and her family could face death threats and physical violence if her testimony of why tea party groups were targeted under her watch becomes public. Lerner and her former deputy at the IRS, Holly Paz, filed court documents Thursday, saying their depositions given in a court case this year should remain sealed from the public forever, according to The Washington Times. "Whenever Mss. Lerner and Paz have been in the media spotlight, they have faced death threats and harassment," their attorneys said. As previously reported by The Western Journal, the IRS settled two lawsuits in October alleging the agency illegally targeted conservative groups under the Obama administration. One of the settlements stipulated the IRS issue a formal apology for illegally singling out conservative and tea party groups due to their political beliefs dating back to 2010.
This election is a turning point for women in Alabama. A chance to make their voices heard in a state that has silenced them for too long.
The accusations against Roy Moore have been horrifying, but not shocking.
Every day new allegations arise that illustrate a pattern of a man in his 30s strutting through town like the cock of the walk, courting and preying on young women and girls. And though Roy Moore has denied the accusations of these women, his own platform and record is hostile to so many Alabamians.
Unlike the national party, the Alabama Republican establishment has chosen to stand by him, attacking and belittling the brave women who have come forward.
As a news organization, we have independently investigated...
Along with French economist Thomas Piketty, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis is making economics sexy again. Journalists enjoyed snapping photos of Varoufakis, clad in a black leather coat, commuting to the finance ministrys offices on his Yamaha motorcycle. But his short tenure in the Greek government was marked by clashes with the countrys creditors and ultimately with the leadership of Syriza, the left-wing party that came to power in Greece in early 2015.
Varoufakis, a self-described erratic Marxist, also happens to be a gifted storyteller who can deftly relate personal experiences to larger themes without sacrificing analytical rigor. Its not something you would expect to find in your average finance minister, but he is no ordinary government bureaucrat.
He opens Adults in the Room, his memoir about his short time in government, by describing a late-night meeting in a Washington bar in which former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers asks him if he would behave as an insider or outsider. It is a sly narrative construct, as Varoufakis tells all from the outsider-insider perspective and recounts the negotiations over Greeces debt with the Troika: the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB).
Varoufakis names the individual actors in the Greek tragedy, but where he really shines is in explaining the central economic and political forces that created Europes economic crisis.
Greeces population is 10.75 million but its public debt is around 330 billion euros ($390 billion). He argues that Greece is in a modern-day debtors prison and cannot pay its sovereign debt without a serious restructuring. Adults in the Room takes pains to describe his attempts to end the countrys fiscal waterboarding at the hands of the Troika. Varoufakis demanded new debt terms and some debt cancellation haircuts for the banks and other institutions that held Greeces bonds. One problem was that the ECBs charter explicitly prohibited debt cancellation and bailouts, thus stacking the deck against the debtor nation.
An outsiders tale of crashing the ultimate insiders club.
Once in power, Varoufakis got creative. He offered to convert Greeces unsustainable debt payments to perpetual bonds that paid lower but perpetual interest, and the country would be able to choose when to pay off the principal, sometime in the distant future. Another novel but workable idea was that Greece would swap its largest debt obligations for new 30-year bonds that had crucial provisions: Annual payments would be suspended until Greeces national income increased, and would then be linked to its economic growth....
Samsung, the South Korean technology giant, has accidentally confirmed the launch of a new foldable smartphone Galaxy X through the devices support page.
The support page is for a smartphone with the model number SM-G888N0, a label that is widely believed to be the upcoming Samsung Galaxy X. According to the Dutch site, Mobiel Kopen (as reported by Lets Go Digital) found a support page for the smartphone on Samsungs Korean site. Although, the support page doesnt provide specifications of the device, it does confirm the existence of a foldable smartphone. The SM-G888 had already received a few certifications from regulators including the Bluetooth SIG, Wi-Fi Alliance, and South Koreas own National Radio Research Agency, reports Mobiel Kopen.
One can expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy X initially in South Korea and also get it certified there. Based on the reception of the Galaxy X, it may decide when to release the device in the other countries. Also, since its a foldable smartphone, it might see a limited launch.

Ever get flaked on by a girl?
Of course you have. Its normal. Its human nature.
Sometimes flaking can be disheartening, sometimes you just ignore it and move on, and sometimes you try to learn from your mistakes. But rarely do you get a chance to find out straight from the source what you did wrong, or what she thought of you.
I mean, a flake is the ultimate form of rejection: apathy. Its like in the pro wrestling world: the best guys are the guys the audience either cheers the loudest or completely shits on with boos, but the guys that you dont hear about are the guys that just simply get no reaction, positive or negative, whatsoever.
Bumping into a former flake just doesnt happen every single day, but when it does, man does it feel enlightening (or embarrassing or both).

For years there has been an ongoing debate about the levels of lead that have been found in the drinking water in Flint, Michigan, but recent studies have shown that water conditions are just as bad in many other areas throughout the country.
In fact, Reuters recently published neighborhood-level blood lead testing results from 34 states, as well as Washington DC, which were collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The results showed that 3,810 neighborhood areas have levels of lead that are at least double those seen in Flint. Close to half of these sites had levels that were actually four times as high as those in Flint.
Some of the areas shown to be affected the most were parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Baltimore and parts of Ohio. Researchers noted that areas which were heavily industrialized before lead was recognized as a problem have become hotspots for contamination. A color-coded map identifying many of these hotspots was published with the report, showing some of the highest levels of contamination in Savannah, Georgia; Brooklyn, New York; and even as far north as Rutland, Vermont.
The results showed that despite the fact that Flint had become the face of lead contamination in America, it doesnt even rank among the most toxic water supplies in the country. Far from being a localized problem, it seems that water supplies throughout the entire country could be compromised. In 2013, prior to the Flint controversy, The American Society of Civil Engineers gave the nations water infrastructure a D+ on their Report Card for Americas Infrastructure in 2013. It is estimated that the much-needed overhaul of the countrys water infrastructure could cost over $1 trillion.

Restoring existing water systems as they reach the end of their useful lives and expanding them to serve a growing population will cost at least $1 trillion over the next 25 years, a 2012 American Water Works Association (AWWA) report concluded.
However, the residents of Flint are still waiting o...

The company plans to capture the printed display market from right under the noses of OLED manufacturers Illustration: Nanosys
Quantum dots have established themselves as a go-to material for photoluminescence, in which light is emitted when stimulated by a light source. Based on this capability, companies such as Nanosys have been able to help display companies like Samsung capture a growing segment of the display market from competing technologies such as LED-backlit LCD and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.
Nanosys currently has more than 60 quantum dot-enabled products on the market, and the company now wants to make a big push to expand the capabilities of quantum dots beyond just photoluminescence into the area of electroluminescence, where photons are emitted in the presence of an electric field or current. Nanosys expects this development to lead to a new era of what Nanosys is terming: Electro Luminescent Quantum Dot (ELQD) displays.
Executives at Nanosys believe that ELQD displays have the potential to disrupt the display industry over the next decade. The displays dont need a backlight and, because each subpixel is addressable, the display wastes no energy while the light travels from the backlight to the pixel. This should translate into lower power consumption, along with wider viewing angles, purer colors, and perfect black levels, according to Jeff Yurek, Director of Marketing and Investor Relations at Nanosys.
We expect to see these displays in the three to five year timeframe, said Yurek. We think that quantum dots have the potential to deliver on the promise of OLED.
It has long been promised that printed OLEDs would someday be available in...
(HRW) On November 14, 2017, the US Senate approved Steven Bradbury as general counsel of the federal Department of Transportation by a 50-47 vote. As the acting head of the Office of Legal Counsel in the US Department of Justice from 2005 to 2009 under then-President George W. Bush, Bradbury wrote several significant opinions that gave legal cover to waterboarding and other CIA abuses of detainees that have long been recognized as torture.
The confirmation of Steven Bradbury sends a dangerous message that the US Senate will, without serious scrutiny, confirm nominees for prominent government posts who have been responsible for authorizing torture, said Letta Tayler, senior terrorism and counterterrorism researcher at Human Rights Watch. By giving legal cover to waterboarding and other torture and inhumane treatment of detainees in violation of US and international law, Bradbury failed to uphold the respect for human rights and the rule of law that are critical for any US government lawyer. US authorities should be placing Bradbury under criminal investigation along with other US officials who played a key role in systematic torture during the George W. Bush presidency.
Human Rights Watch is among 13 nongovernmental organizations that outlined their concerns about Bradbury in a letter to the US Senate Transportation Committee. Human Rights Watch has extensively documented why ranking Bush administration officials should be prosecuted for torture.

AFP / by Maria Panina with Maya Cebeily in Beirut and Stuart Williams in Istanbul | Syrians carry for burial the bodies of victims who died following reported shelling by Syrian government forces in the rebel-held town of Douma in eastern Syria. The conflict has claimed over 300,000 lives.
The presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet on Wednesday for a summit aimed at bringing peace in Syria.
Here is what you need to know about the trios summit at the Black Sea resort of Sochi, hosted by Vladimir Putin ahead of parallel UN-led talks in Geneva set to be relaunched on November 28.
Building on Astana talks
Syrian regime backers Russia and Iran and rebel supporter Turkey have co-sponsored peace talks in Astana, the capital of Russian ally Kazakhstan.
With seven rounds of negotiations this year, the Moscow-initiated talks brought together representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition, including some key armed groups who had previously steered clear of other negotiations.
Unlike the Geneva talks which were politically focused and led to deadlock, the Astana diplomatic push concentrated on military issues.
While unable to halt fighting altogether, the talks did lead to a lowering of violence on the ground with the creation of four de-escalation zones.
Following its military intervention that allowed Damascus regime forces to get the upper hand on the ground, Moscow now wants to use the Astana result to relaunch a political process.
There are three countries setting the future trajectory of Syria, and none are the US or an Arab country, said Randa Slim, an expert at the US-based Middle East Institute.
Ahead of the summit the trio in no way forms a united bloc: ongoing major dif...

The price of oil is rising again, the highest its been in two years, approaching $58 per barrel.
Whats going on? Something is clearly boiling below the surface on the Arabian Peninsula. How can we interpret these chaotic moves?
Why does the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia exist? Did it simply arise naturally? Does the mindset of the people living in the region simply long for this Wahabbi autocracy? This is what certain forces would like us to believe. But the reality is that the rise of the House of Saud, and the prolonged life of this absolute monarchy that beheads and tortures, is closely linked to forces outside the region, namely, western oil bankers.
The British empire discovered, in their efforts to dominate the region, that ibn Saud, known as Abdulaziz in the Arab world, was a great middleman. In 1915, a friendship and cooperation pact was signed with this autocratic ruler, and the British supplied him with huge amounts of weapons. It was mainly due to British military and financial support that ibn Saud was able to beat down all his rivals, and dominate the Peninsula. In 1938, oil was discovered, and the third Saudi s...

Zimbabwe's parliament opened a session on Tuesday to discuss a motion on impeaching President Robert Mugabe who is clinging to power after 37 years in office.

Nashville - When Kirsten Anderson submitted a memo detailing her concerns about sexual harassment at the Iowa Capitol, she expected comments about women in the office - their sex lives, breast sizes and the length of skirts worn by teenage pages - to stop. Instead, Anderson was fired seven hours later from her job with the Iowa Republican Senate Caucus. After four years of litigation that ended in September, the state agreed to pay $1.75 million to settle her claim, leaving taxpayers footing the bill. Her case is among the first in a recent wave of high-profile sexual harassment cases that have roiled state legislatures around the nation, highlighting the moral and financial liability states faces as claims pile up. Since last year, at least 40 lawmakers - nearly all men - in 20 states have been publicly accused by more than 100 people of some form of sexual misconduct or harassment, a USA TODAY NETWORK analysis found.
A confidential State Department dissent memo not previously reported said Tillerson breached the Child Soldiers Prevention Act when he decided in June to exclude Iraq, Myanmar, and Afghanistan from a U.S. list of offenders in the use of child soldiers. This was despite the department publicly acknowledging that children were being conscripted in those countries.
Keeping the countries off the annual list makes it easier to provide them with U.S. military assistance. Iraq and Afghanistan are close allies in the fight against Islamist militants, while Myanmar is an emerging ally to offset Chinas influence in Southeast Asia.
Documents reviewed by Reuters also show Tillersons decision was at odds with a unanimous recommendation by the heads of the State Departments regional bureaus overseeing embassies in the Middle East and Asia, the U.S. envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, the departments human rights office and its own in-house lawyers.
Beyond contravening U.S. law, this decision risks marring the credibility of a broad range of State Department reports and analyses and has weakened one of the U.S. governments primary diplomatic tools to deter governmental armed forces and government-supported armed groups from recruiting and using children in combat and support roles around the world, said the July 28 memo.

A few months ago CBS Anchor Charlie Rose interviewed former President Trump Campaign Strategist Steve Bannon on 60 Minutes.
During the interview the Billy Bush tape was discussed where President Trump was recorded saying that women let him grab them anywhere since hes a celebrity. The video was years old when presented on all the mainstream media (MSM) outlets late in the campaign just a few weeks before the election.
President Trump and Steve Bannon responded to the Bush tape by having a press conference in St. Louis a few days later on a Sunday shortly before the 2nd debate with Hillary Clinton.
President Trump did what no politician has ever done he hit back HARD and Bannon had much to do with it.
On that Sunday President Trump invited the media to a pre-debate presser. The media was non- stop about the video claiming Trump was finished. The reporters thought they were going to a pre-debate photo op with Donald Trump. They walked in on Trump sitting with Clinton rape victims. Trump held a presser with Paula Jones, Kathy Shelton, Juanita Broaddrick & Kathleen Willey
TRUMP PUNKED THE PRESS!
This all occurred a few hours before the 2nd debate. The liberal MSM thought again that they had finally knocked Donald Trump out of the race. This was their October surprise. What the MSM could not see was that the Clinton campaign could not win an argument about abusing women. Bill Clinton, the Democrat candidates husband, was the worlds most notorious womanizer and Trump reminded us all that this was the fact.
Rose started a segment of the interview off with a comment to Bannon that Americans do care about respect for women. There was some discussion then Rose asked Bannon in a confronting manner, Are you trying to destroy somebody when you...

Good morning, Im still reporting on: Roy Moore Fundraising Soars, 1895 Synopsis: Fundraising for Judge Roy Moore skyrocketed last week as his latest attacker has not turned over her high school annual for professional handwriting analysis. The reason, of course, is because it is a total fraud. Judge Moore never signed it. According to campaign chairman Bill Armistead: We have raised more in the last six days online than the total raised online since the runoff Sept. 26. Despite the fact that Judge Moore has had RNC and NRSC funding cut off thanks to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, fundraising has topped six figures for several days in a row, putting Democrats that Moore is back in the race. Although some pollsters still show Moores Democrat opponent, Doug Jones, with a slight lead, no doubt, that is because they are still skewing their polls to try to influence of the race, rather than honestly report on shifts in public sentiment. The election will be held on Dec. 12. You can rest assured that in the last few days of this race, the results will shift in favor of Judge Moore dramatically as the unfair skews currently still being applied to make it appear that the Democrat is in the lead, will be gradually taken away so that in the end the pollsters wont be too, too embarrassed by the results. Of course, the MSM will pretend until Dec. 13 that they never heard about the destruction of Moores accusers fabricated accusations. No, the MSM will beat the drum for the Democrat to the end. Heres a good example from yesterdays Daily Mail which is breathlessly covering events for all the anti-Trumpers in the UK: Progressive pastors say Roy Moore unfit for US Senate. Well, yesterday dozens yes DOZENS of so-called progressive pastors signed a letter saying Moore is unfit to serve. So dozens might mean lets say - 13 pastors. I have two stepsons who are in their twenties. When they were teenagers, I noticed that one of their least favorite holiday presents was the iTunes gift card. They could barely feign gratitude and they left the things unused. When I enquired about why they didnt want free music, they explained that they could get all the free music they wanted online, and they didnt need to download it song-by-song but could get whole albums just as easily.
My first thought was that this was some kind of illicit revival of Napster which I thought had been resolved all the way back in 2000 with the resolution of Metallica v. Napster. Peer-to-peer sharing of this type was illegal, so how could my kids be doing this? Soon enough I realized, however, that I was witnessing a generational change and that almost no one their age was buying music anymore.
My next thought was that the legal system had been overwhelmed by digital pirating and that musicians would soon be starving to death. The problem, I discovered, was so pervasive that there was really no point in me as a parent trying to fight against it. All that was left was to figure out how it might soon devastate writers.
Of course, the news industry had been staggering from the digital revolution for some time by that point, trying to find a way to avoid giving away its product for free. They explored paywalls and premium content, all the while trimming payroll and closing foreign desks. Nothing appeared to work, and unpunished pirating seemed like it would close off or undermine some of the few solutions that were being explored with some success.
The music industry had to adapt, and the patch so far has been for musicians to pretty much give up on selling CDs and instead focus on getting people to pay to see live performances. They tour more and they charge much more for their concerts.
This is interesting because if basically follows the model of the Grateful Dead. They were an improvisational band that did not perform well in the studio, so they spent less time making albums and more time touring the country, often doing ninety or more shows a year. They were unique in that they made no effort to keep people from taping and trading recordings of their concerts, and saw it as a way to increase their exposure and popularity. They didnt charge more for their concerts, instead making up for their lost record sales revenue by having a higher volume of shows.
This past week, I looked into seeing a Dead & Company show in Philadelphia. This is an ensemble that includes three members from the original...
Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia would have been one hundred years old today, so it seems like a good time to look back on his career and think about how he is still relevant in our present era. Ira Shapiro has done that in an excellent piece that traces Byrd from his 1917 birth in South Carolina to his death in 2010. As part of that article, Shapiro has a lengthy exploration of the Byrd Rule which I wont try to replicate here. Whats more important is to understand why the rule became necessary, and Shapiro explains that in an admirably concise manner:
Byrds belief in process and procedure was also why he was a key player in producing and enacting the Budget Control and Impoundment Act of 1974. He recognized that if Congress could not produce an overall budget, it would inevitably cede power to the executive branch. He was willing to tolerate a Budget Act that established procedures that were an exception to the normal Senate rules. But when Byrd saw the reconciliation procedure being abused by the Reagan administration, he moved quickly to limit the use of reconciliation by ensuring that it could only be used for budget purposes and not for extraneous matters.
That little paragraph makes it easy to see both why the Trump administration and the Republican congressional leadership have pursued the budget reconciliation process to repeal Obamacare and enact tax reform and why they have found the effort so vexatious. As the Senate became more polarized by party in the 1970s, it became necessary to relax Senate rules to assure that some agreement on a budget could be achieved, because without any agreement on spending priorities, the administration would be forced or enabled to make those decisions unilaterally. As a result, the filibuster was eliminated for budget bills. Of course, this was immediately exploited by senators who saw their goals thwarted by the need to win a supermajority of votes and things were attached to the budget reconciliation bills that could not have passed during regular order.
Byrds solution was to empower the parliamentarian to strike things from reconciliation bills that had no obvious budgetary impact. He also found a way to cut down on shenanigans, like building out legislation that looks affordable in the short term but comes with giant balloon payments down the line. He did this by making sure that budget bills had to balance after ten years. Of course, accomplishing these things through rule-writing may sound easy but it actually required a large amount of intelligence and imagination. Byrd had both in abundance, but even he couldnt anticipate every way in which the rules could be bent to violate the spirit of what he was trying to achieve.

I wish there were any hope that I might wake up one morning and discover that Stupid has been vanquished from the Earth.
Some, such as Julia Cooper, 75, a semiretired nurse from Montgomery, said they were continuing to support [Roy] Moore because of the spiritual battle he was waging. She said that when she was a high school student in Camden, Ala., a man in his 20s or 30s came to her house to date her but she resisted his requests. Even at the age of 14, you could have walked away, she said of the accusers. If you want to get out, you can get out.
I know that that fine morning will never come, but the Stupid doesn't have to be this prevalent and pronounced and politically ascendant.
At this point, the cloud is old news. This does not, however, diminish its continuing impact on individuals and businesses worldwide. As cloud-based services strive towards ubiquity, their impacts will likewise scale, as will their effects. In fact, 74 percent of CTOs today believe that cloud computing will have the most measurable impact on their business this year. Specifically in the area of file storage, the cloud has swiftly become the domain of governmental regulations, More

What can we expect from Roy Moore on foreign policy if he's elected to be the next US senator from Alabama? It won't be good. Moore, a former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, is a bigot stirring misplaced fears about Sharia law in the US. He also opposes internationally recognized human rights. Comment: Here's what Moore said on Sharia law when questioned about it: "There are communities under Sharia law right now in our country. Up in Illinois. Christian communities; I don't know if they may be Muslim communities. But Sharia law is a little different from American law. It is founded on religious concepts... Well, there's Sharia law, as I understand it, in Illinois, Indiana -- up there. I don't know." Here Moore is being alarmist. To our knowledge there are no Sharia law communities in the US, and America is far from being taken over by Islam. But he is right to point out that Sharia law - or any religious law for the matter - is different from the law of any modern democracy, and thus incompatible. That in itself is not bigotry. On his campaign website for the December special election in Alabama, Moore asserts about foreign affairs: "We should not be subject to UN control and direction." The UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child would "only undermine our sovereignty as a nation, as does the very presence of the United Nations on our soil," he argues. His opposition to the UN-backed rights of the child is telling in light of the allegations he faces, including initiating a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl. Comment: Not so fast. Moore may be rightly criticized for some of his ideological or political views (see below), but so far the sexual abuse accusations against him appear to be spurious: Roy Moore case: Calls for arrest of attorney Gloria Allred over possibly forged signature in accuser's yearbookFormer Alabama mall manager says Roy Moore was not banned over harassment claimsRoy Moore caught up in Hollywood Weinstein HysteriaMother of Leigh Corfman, one of Roy Moore's accusers, has contradicted a key detail of her daughter's sexual misconduct storyMother of Roy Moore accuser: Washington Post reporters convinced my daughter to go publicRoy Moore's accusers: One worked as Hillary campaign worker, another has history of false allegations As for his opposition to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, his main objection is to UN regulations imposed externally on the US. Whether such regulations are good or bad for the American people is open to debate, but it does not follow from Moore's opposition that he does not care about the rights of children. Article 34 of the convention requires that its signatories "undertake to protect the child from all forms of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse." Moore's policy statement on foreign affairs also notes: "We must remember that Israel is the United States' most important ally and partner in the Middle East and should reject agreements or policies th...

Going Somewhere is a dynamic autobiographical narrative about Andrew Marinos career in science. With a depth and drama that arise from personal involvement, the book explores an exceptionally wide range of science-related matters: the relation between electrical energy and life; the influence of corporate and military power on science; the role of self-interest on the part of federal and state agencies that deal with human health, especially the NIH and the FDA; the importance of cross-examining scientific experts in legal hearings; the erroneous view of nature that results when the perspective of physics is extended into biology; the pivotal role of deterministic chaos theory in at least some cognitive processes.
These matters arise in the long course of the authors scientific and legal activities involving the complex debate over the health risks of man-made environmental electromagnetic fields. The book offers far more than a solution to the contentious health issue. The story provides a portal into how science actually works, which you will see differs dramatically from the romantic notion of an objective search for truth. You will understand that science is a human enterprise, all too human, inescapably...
Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have found new evidence to support a theory that the breakup of Antarctic ice may be caused in part by a massive geothermal heat source, with output close to the scale of Yellowstone National Park. A geothermal heat source called a mantle plume - a hot stream of subterranean molten rock that rises through the Earth's crust - may explain the breathing effect visible on Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land and elsewhere along the massive ice sheet. While the mantle plume is not a new discovery, the recent research indicates it may explain why the ice sheet collapsed in a previous era of rapid climate change 11,000 years ago and why the sheet is breaking up so quickly now.
KrebsOnSecurity recently featured a story about a New Mexico man who stands accused of using the now-defunct vDOS attack-for-hire service to hobble the Web sites of several former employers. That piece stated that I wasnt aware of any other prosecutions related to vDOS customers, but as it happens there was a prosecution in the United Kingdom earlier this year of a man whos admitted to both using and helping to administer vDOS. Heres a look at some open-source clues that may have led to the U.K. mans arrest.
In early July 2017, the West Midlands Police in the U.K. arrested 19-year-old Stockport resident Jack Chappell and charged him with aiding the vDOS co-founders two Israeli men who were arrested late year and charged with running the service.
Until its demise in September 2016, vDOS was by far the most popular and powerful attack-for-hire service, allowing even completely unskilled Internet users to launch crippling assaults capable of knocking most Web sites offline. vDOS made more than $600,000 in just two of the four years it was in operation, launching more than 150,000 attacks against thousands of victims (including this site).
For his part, Chappell was charged with assisting in attacks against Web sites for some of the worlds largest companies, including Amazon, BBC, BT, Netflix, T-Mobile, Virgin Media, and Vodafone, between May 1, 2015 and April 30, 2016.
At the end of July 2017, Chappell pleaded guilty to those allegations, as well as charges of helping vDOS launder money from customers wishing to pay for attacks with PayPal accounts.
A big factor in that plea was the leak of the vDOS attacks, customer support and payments databases to this author and to U.S. law enforcement officials in the fall of 2016. Those databases provided extremely detailed inf...

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah have been developing momentum in the countryside of al-Bukamal since the liberation of the city from ISIS on Sunday. ISIS has conducted a series of counter-attacks against the SAA near al-Bukamal, but has not been able to stop the goovernment advance.
The SAA, Hezbollah, the Tiger Forces and their allies, backed up by the Russian Aerospace Forces, are now working to drive the remaining ISIS members out from the villages located on the western bank of the Euphrates.

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's sweeping investigation into President Donald Trump's White House just expanded to President Barack Obama's White House, True Pundit has learned. Mueller's probe has also expanded into the tenures of Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch in their official roles as U.S. attorney general during Obama's two terms in the White House. Mueller's team - for the first time - has requested a number of DOJ records and emails related to Holder and Lynch, including additional records linked to Obama and Valerie Jarrett, who served as Obama's senior advisor and controversial consigliere, according to federal law enforcement sources.
the event as a symbol of the deep-rooted and developed relations between Syria and Turkey, which was not merely an occasion for cultural and artistic exchange between the two countries; but rather an everlasting festival of love between Syrian and Turkish intellectuals. On 28 March 2011, less than two weeks into the Syrian uprising, the then Syrian Culture Minister Riad Esmat inaugurated the Syrian Cultural Days in Turkey event with his Turkish counterpart Ertugrul Gunay. The Syrian minister described
Yet this festival of everlasting love barely lasted a month: in late April of that year, Ankara recalled its ambassador in Damascus as one of its escalating actions against the Syrian regime, followed by the severing of relations between the two governments, and of course the annulment of the festival of eternal love that Esmat had spoken about.
If we were to review the Syrian cultural sphere in Turkey today, it would be clear that its reality is far more complex than a seasonal cultural festival between two neighbouring countries. Now that Syrian refugees have grown into large communities within Turkey, ana...
The Global Cyber Alliance has given the world a new free Domain Name Service resolver, and advanced it as offering unusually strong security and privacy features.
The Quad9 DNS service, at 184.108.40.206, not only turns URIs into IP addresses, but also checks them against IBM X-Force's threat intelligence database. Those checks protect agains landing on any of the 40 billion evil sites and images X-Force has found to be dangerous.
The Alliance (GCA) was co-founded by the City of London Police, the District Attorney of New York County and the Center for Internet Security and styled itself "an international, cross-sector effort designed to confront, address, and prevent malicious cyber activity."
[...] The organisation promised that records of user lookups would not be put out to pasture in data farms: "Information about the websites consumers visit, where they live and what device they use are often captured by some DNS services and used for marketing or other purposes", it said. Quad9 won't "store, correlate, or otherwise leverage" personal information.
[...] If you're one of the lucky few whose ISP offers IPv6, there's a Quad9 resolver for you at 2620:fe::fe (the PCH public resolver).

[insert : up to you should now.] This is the second time in a week that I have not agreed completely with Judge Jeanine. The first time was when she came out against Judge Roy Moore. I think Judge Pirro just got swept up in a tidal wave of opinion when the herd led by Mitch McConnell turned on Judge Moore. At this point, the evidence is clear that Judge Moore has been vindicated. But this second difference of opinion puts me out on an even more tenuous limb. This opinion will be counter to what most of you believe. I watched the entire Sessions appearance before the House Judiciary committee this week up until their break for a vote and lunch. I saw all the clips she just used of the various congress-folk all good people, interrogating Sessions - and although I know I could easily be wrong, Im thinking hoping that Sessions has this under control. I sympathize with Sessions because he is like myself not a good extemporaneous speaker when under any sort of pressure. [insert: I dont know what the problem is to Why isnt this in front of a grand jury?] Your Honor, with respect - but how do you know that it is not in front of a grand jury? Grand juries are typically conducted in secret.bb What if we are just so used to having a Justice Department which does everything wrong, that we arent being patient enough when things are being done right. There are rumors out there that 842 sealed indictments were issued by the Justice Department between Oct. 30 through November 10th. Of those, 323 are in California yup, thats a whopping 38%. If you throw in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia where over 90% of the swamp-dwelling lobbyists live, thats an additional 15% of the total. If you throw in the New York City area and the Philadelphia area, thats another 138 sealed indictments, or 16% of the total. So, those 4 areas would represent 70% of these rumored indictments. At a time when a new search, intended to asphyxiate and criminalize any attempt at resistance, strikes Bure, we publish here a common forum signed by many associations, collectives and territories in struggle. In the face of attempts at intimidation, our determination will be shared and our calendar will be common throughout the month of December! Decentralized call for action around December 6th!
Urgency in the territories as in the street!
Living in threatened or defending areas, we have met several times to declare an emergency month of struggles together. Indeed, the coming month of December is likely to cover a particular meaning for us, at least two titles.
First, it will be an opportunity for the Macron government December 12 to celebrate the two years of the tragic farce that was COP21. There is no doubt that our National Banker will be delighted to claim heir to the climate agreement, and to pose as the undisputed champion of green growth, barely a month after publicly supporting a destructive mining project in Guyana, and took the position, through the voice of his minister, in favor of the burial of radioactive waste.
From the COP 21, we remember the bitterness of having seen the main perpetrators of the climate rampage come together with impunity at the end of 2015 and claim to have the solutions to their own madness, and the anger of having seen our demonstrations banned under cover state of emergency. But we also remember the arrival at Versailles and the overflowing joy of a bike-trailer from Notre-Dame-des-Landes and making superfluous commune after comm...
Hillary Clinton really wants to be president - even if that means blasting off from Earth to do so. The failed Democratic candidate recently talked with Now This, a liberal online news outlet, where she pined for a presidency. While discussing a variety of topics, Clinton envisioned leaving Earth and venturing Earth 2, where that planet apparently faces the same issues as the actual Earth. "We went to another planet with Hillary," the caption reads as Clinton and Now This's Nico Pitney fired off a series of topics. "People joke about Earth 2, where you are president," he told a giggling Hillary.
I call them Renfields after the vampires slave in Dracula. Theyre the weak, beglamoured, cowardly, venal, crippled, soul-dead followers of a master vampire: their sense of right or wrong is completely overruled and all thats left is fear of the masters displeasure.
Dracula is especially appropriate, because its also a story about rape, and the effect it has on everyone surrounding the assault its a morality tale about a socially privileged, rich, untouchable nobleman who inflicts his will on whomever he wishes hes a being of absolute selfishness. Bram Stoker gives Dracula the excuse of not being human anymore, and I think the story would be unbearable if it turned out that Dracula was just a normal, living, member of the power elite when the story comes to an end. In that view, we get echoes of Alan Moores extremely disturbing From Hell which posits that another great sexual murderer, Jack the Ripper, was a member of the establishment, whose embarrassed and terrified peers covered for him.
That stunning illustration, by the way, is from J. J. Muths exquisite Dracula: a Symphony of Moonlight and Nightmares, [amzn] Its beautiful and creepy and captivating. I was going to illustrate this with Tom Waits performance as Renfield in Coppolas Dracula but Waits Renfield manages to be almost a sympathetic character. His will is so broken beneath the boot of the vampire that he has no beliefs left to compromise.
Christopher Hitchens, a man whose beliefs eventually became problematic for me, once described Francois Mitterand as A man so corrupt he would gladly pay for the pleasure of selling himself. These are the kind of men that the master vampires want. Cruel Leonidas asks you to stand; I only ask that you kneel, says Frank Millers Xerxes in what is probably a calumny to Xerxes. But he captures the sentiment right.
Muths expression of Draculas offer to Renfield is beautifully put: you will see life through the eyes of centuries. Thats the appeal that is made to people that follow the powerful and aid and abet their crimes. In this time, when we...

Gold versus Bitcoin: The pro-gold argument takes
Why cryptocurrencies will not replace gold as a store of value
Similarities between crypto and gold but that does not make them substitutes
Gold remains a highly liquid market, cryptocurrencies continue to be fragmented and difficult to spend
Bitcoin does not make it an effective hedge against stocks
Gold coins and bars cannot be hacked and vaults are insured
This weekend saw bitcoin shoot up over $8,000 and Bloomberg covered how some preppers were turning to bitcoin over gold. Does this mean its all over for gold? Is it set to be supplanted as a safe haven by crypto currencies?
Hardly. People read such information and continue to believe that gold and cryptocurrencies are substitute assets. They are not. So why are they so often pitched against one another?
Bitcoin and its contemporaries clearly have a role to play, the volume of demand demonstrates this and the technology is powerful. But, that role is not as a replacement for gold as a store of value.
Risk Hedge sums it up saying:
Despite what the crypto-evangelists will tell you, digital tokens will never and can never replace gold as your financial hedge.

Once a drug has been approved for some use it may be legally prescribed for any use. New uses for old drugs are discovered quite often so off-label uses can be very different from FDA approved uses. Mitomycin, for example, was approved to treat stomach and pancreatic cancer but is used off-label in laser-eye surgery. Drugs prescribed off-label have not been through FDA-approved efficacy trials for the off-label use. In Assessing the FDA via the Anomaly of Off-Label Drug Prescribing I pointed out that off-label prescribing, therefore, gives us a window onto a world with much less FDA regulation.
Since off-label prescribing is common and in rapidly progressing areas of medicine often the gold-standard, I argued that the behavior of physicians validated off-label prescribing and demonstrated that physicians were willing and able to draw upon non-FDA sources of information to make rational prescribing decisions. Dan Klein and I also showed that physicians are supportive of off-label prescribing saying, for example, that it would be crazy to require FDA approval for off-label uses.
The support of physicians for off-label prescribing is telling but not dispositive. Perhaps physicians make hubristic mistakes in prescribing off-label. A new paper by Ladanie et al. (including John Ioannidis) provides important information. The authors search the literature for all the RCTs when an off-label drug was pitted against an on-label drug. They conclude:
Our meta-epidemiological analysis of 25 different treatment indications for off-label drug use
provides no empirical evidence supporting any assumption of generally inferior treatment
effects associated with off-label use. On the contrary, the summary effect estimates across all
indications would even be compatible with more favorable effects, on average, of the off-label
treatment. However, the heterogeneity is substantial and the on-label comparators are not
necessarily the best approved treatment option in all 25 topics. While some off-label
treatments are clearly better, others are clearly not.
The finding is especially impressive because although off-label treatments are sometimes the gold standard they are also often used when standard treatments have failed. Thus, in an RCT, off-label treatments could be worse on average and yet still provide a very useful weapon in the medical armory.

Name It. Shame it. Call it out. Thus has actress Rose McGowan urged all those who have suffered sexual harassment and refrained from speaking out. With the #MeToo movement now in full throttle, individuals everywhere are coming out of the shadows to publicly humiliate sexual predators, no matter how high the pedestal upon which such harassers sit.
Shame, we are now told, is back in vogue, particularly if its directed towards those deemed a threat to sexual consent. The truth, however, is that the Left has been appropriating shame to serve its ideological objectives for generations. The focus on sexual harassment albeit long overdue is yet the latest manifestation of liberals unprincipled approach to morality.
Psychoanalyst Joseph Burgo, writing for the Washington Post, observes that the #MeToo movement is a bit ironic, given that shame has increasingly come to be viewed as a repressive force whose shackles must be thrown off. Indeed, the progressivist agenda counsels everyone to feel no shame, whether they be gay or transgender or overweight; having had an abortion; having survived rape or childhood sexual abuse; or struggling with mental illness or addiction.
Yet, Burgo argues, shame may also serve as a force for good when we direct it at behavior damaging to the social fabric. It sure can and it has. Although Burgo doesnt say it, the Left has engaged in aggressive public shaming programs for years.
Burgo continues: A fear of being publicly shamed encourages adherence to the rules and standards that enable us to live together in a civilized way. When we turn shame upon individuals who violate those standards, we press them to desist. Sound familiar? How about the decades-long public shaming of smokers?
I remember this ad from the 1990s that compared smokers to chimpanzees. Since then, surveys have found smokers to be considered outcasts, persecuted, lepers, under-class, and blacklisted. A 2008 survey in New York City found most respondents agreed that most people would not hire a smoker to take care of their children, and that most non-smokers would be reluctant to date someone who smokes. A significant minority of respondents even agreed that smoking was a sign of personal failure. In 2004, Huffington Post featured an article titled, Why Smokers Must B...
The iconic Thanksgiving holiday brings us extended family visits, the smell of roasting turkey, and the awkward silence when someone breaks the unspoken vow of silence regarding politics, religion, or the latest social concern of the day.
Thanksgiving with my family didnt quite fit this recipe. We didnt have a home filled with distant relatives. We didnt watch football or the Macys parade. My mom didnt roast a turkey, and for many years we didnt even eat at home. For more than a decade, we enjoyed our Thanksgiving at an Italian restaurant that served a delicious holiday meal, complete with the traditional turkey, potatoes, dressing, and pumpkin pie along with less traditional fare of lasagna, made-to-order pasta, and cannoli.
We would eat and eat some more, and laugh and have a handful of awkward silences, though tempered by a pricey and thoroughly tasty cocktail. Then wed all trudge along the sidewalks of the shopping district braving the winter chill to get our annual picture at the piga family picture with a large statue of a bronze boar.
The picture at the pig saw many configurations of family members. Some years we had all us kids. Others included various significant others. Later, the pictures featured spouses and our firstborn. Occasionally one of us kids would be missing, unable to make the trip home. Then there was the year my mom stood alone by the pig, because none of us could make it. Then the restaurant closed its doors, marking the final nail in the coffin for our beloved family tradition.
Such is the way of things, I suppose. Kids get older, move away, get married, have kids, and have to create their own family traditions. This can be harder than one would expect. When kids are young, its easy for plans to go undone or just go awry. Our best efforts to establish routine dont always go smoothly, especially if you have recently moved, and we may be left wondering what to do now. Here are five fresh ideas to help you and yours create new and lasting holiday traditions.
Living in one of the wealthiest nations in the world is a blessing none of us should take for granted. While many of us may be gorging on turkey and nibblingor freezingthe leftovers, many wont have a warm home and meal for the holiday. Find a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or food pantry in your area that could use your hands, feet, or donations.
We often moan and groan and write articles about how to suffer family who hold different views and opinions, but for the elderly loneliness and social isolation can negatively affect their health and well-being. Prior to the Thanksgiving...
Chinas rebuff over the allegation against India is significant considering that Beijing and Islamabad regard themselves as iron brothers sharing all-weather ties.
Chairman of Pakistans Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mehmood Hayat on November 14 had accused India of stoking chaos and anarchy in the region.
He alleged that Indians external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing or RAW has established a special cell at a cost of $500 million to sabotage the CPEC.
We have no such relevant reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a media briefing when asked about the allegation.
Chinas rebuff over the allegation against India is significant considering that Beijing and Islamabad regard themselves as iron brothers sharing all-weather ties.
Also in an apparent reference to Indias objections over the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor passing through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir or PoK, Mr Lu said we hope that CPEC could win more recognition and support from regional countries and the international community.
Pakistans top officials have been accusing Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of sabotaging the CPEC as the Pakistani security forces had to battle numerous attacks by the Balochistan nationalist forces as well as the Islamic State in Balochistan province.

Although protests were down on Veterans Day weekend and have been decreasing, Thanksgiving offers a chance to reach a new and broader audience and perhaps reinvigorate an effort trending to rigor mortis. Perhaps the kneelers attention has followed Americas in wandering away. If so, they too have fallen victim to liberal activisms existential threat: Boredom.
Saul Alinsky was the godfather of American leftist activism. In his protest primer, Rules for Radicals, he describes the Lefts ultimate peril. I cannot repeat too often that a conflict that drags on too long becomes a dragAfter a period of time it becomes monotonous, repetitive, an emotional treadmill, and worse than anything else a bore. Forty years and 40 yard-lines later, the NFL kneelers have become a case study in Alinskys prescient warning.
The risk of boredom is inherent to liberal activism because of its subjective, self-centered approach. It is the Lefts nature to proclaim a problem, but never an endpoint for a solution. Liberals simply take it as given that the vast majority of America must accept the Lefts premise and wait patiently.
The conundrum manifests itself throughout liberals agenda. How do we know when the planet will have been saved? When will affirmative-action programs have fulfilled their mission? What exactly constitutes a living wage?
Liberals amorphous agenda-to-infinity often leads to a muddle of one protest morphing into another with none ever really ending. Any of the Lefts protests can supply evidence of this, inevitably attracting aggrieved comrades until it resembles a Woodstock of Woe. The resulting common perception is that the Left are only happy when they protest. For the majority of America, such constancy quickly appears as futility and then becomes boredom.
The NFL kneelers have capturedor rather, been captured bythis leftist predicament. Their muddle began at the beginning: Over what kneeling actually means. Kneelers currently say their action is not disrespectful. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reiterated recently the action is not intended to be disrespectful to the flag. As he explained, the kneelers will state to you, and...
The responses on Twitter were swift. Boy, are those conservatives awful. We just knew it. Why cant they prioritize better in a world where people are dying? Conservatives are insane and hateful! Republican strategist Steve Schmidt was representative:
But the story itself did precisely nothing and I mean nothing to substantiate the tweets. The article was headlined Starbucks Is Criticized for Its Holiday Cups. Yes, Again. The story does not support this headline.
Two years ago we were subjected to claims that Christians and conservatives were completely offended by the 2015 Starbucks Christmas cup. That was so false that it led me to write a piece headlined, ...
The Punisher has just appeared on Netflix, the latest product of its unstoppable Marvel division. This is a far more important development than it might seem. The Punisher is both a combat veteran and a blue-collar worker. The series starts with him working construction. He has unimpeachable moral integrity, the likes of which you dont find in prestige television and what Christopher Lasch called the moral realism of the lower classes.
Our society can produce prestige television and stories about heroes, but we exclude the working classes from this genre. They can be victims or bystanders or extras, but thats about it. In this story, however, you find veterans at the center, and some are quite vocal about how society has abandoned them.
Admittedly, theyre led in their group therapy by an Obama-style inspirational figure who is all about not being judgmental. In his defense, he doesnt spit in the faces of people who cling to God and guns. This is progress, but the group therapy proves worse than worthless.
Unfortunately, like much coming out of Hollywood, the show advertises its contempt for half of America. If you dont enjoy seeing the only guy with a National Rifle Association shirt and Second Amendment views start out as a fraud then turn into something evil, Netflix doesnt offer you much. If you want to see a gun rights guy turn terrorist, youre gonna love this!
The show is explicitly anti-gun control and defends armed self-defense, and the gun-control politician seems to be making his career on the back of a tragedy. Its complicated.
Of course, as we all enjoy liberal paranoid entertainment, there are evil CIA types and contractors and special forces operators. These guys are insanely efficient at their conspiracies, except when they have to deal with this one nobody then fail. That goes well with the typical TV show genius hacking into everything.
With such magical tech powers, you wonder that the wars didnt turn out better, but that is besides the point. You neednt think about the politics of the waryoure already being sold on the idea that corrupt influential types betrayed...
Thirty-some years ago, as co-editor in a crowded, attic-like room in Michigan State Universitys Morrill Hall, I argued successfully against publishing doggerel in the campus literary magazine. Months later, that same rejected poem appeared in Rolling Stone magazine.
I concluded that no matter how much Rolling Stone gussied up its image with the high-falutin language of former English majors and Annie Leibovitz glossies, it was still pretty much destined to remain in a midcult rut, the intellectual landscape where pretension is determined a fitting substitute for prose and verse that occasionally aspires but never attains true literary status.
Now, mind you, I can defend midcult all day long as a necessary enterprise to drag lowbrow America as far away from Jerry Springer as possible. However, the soft-core exploitation of the teeny-bopper heartthrobs depicted and a magazine audience eager to see celebrity naughty bits too often meant the magazine succumbed to Springer over Springsteen.
Readers will remember it was Rolling Stones Leibovitz who snapped the photo of the New Jersey bards butt in front of Old Glory for his Born in the U.S.A. album cover. Clearly, the cover was dual-purposed for those inclined to ogle a rock stars bum. Everyone else got the kiss-my-tuckus message that the American Dream, for Bruce Springsteen, eluded many of the countrys citizens. Images from that photo shoot found their way to an issue of Rolling Stone, including the cover. In the meantime, the raconteur running the magazine raked in the cash while attempting to shape the culture.
Thats how it goes in the world of the magazines editor and co-founder Jann Wenner. Favored artists received preferred coverage and positive reviews, and artists signed to labels that bought significant amounts of advertising typically wound up in some state of undress on the cover. As the father of two daughters in the 1990s, the skeezy photos of the magazines hot issues were too much, and I finally allowed my subscription to lapse.
Back in the day, however, I recall some great essays, reviews, and journalism percolating through the mire of Rolling Stones pages, which I read religiously for nearly 25 years from the mid-1970s to 2000. I also remember a particularly disturbing interview with Carly Simon wherein the author confesses jealousy not for the singers then-husband James Taylor in the mid-1970s but for their infant child. Just as embarrassing was the 10-year anniversary special broadcast on CBS in 1977, of which the less written the better.
By the 1990s, other magazines were competing with Rolling Stone, some admirably sticking primarily to music much like the lamented Trouser Press of the decade previous. Spin,...
The recent hysteria over sexual assault has resulted in some delicious comeuppance for some of the most self-righteous among us. The best example of this is Lena Dunham.
In August, Dunham tweeted: Things women do lie about: what they ate for lunch. Things women dont lie about: rape. When someone responded, pointing out that 10 percent of all rape allegations are false, Dunham modified her claim, writing: The actual number, while hard to track, is much closer to 3%.
Dunhams claim is dangerously misleading, as the number of false accusations refer only to reports that have been filed with police and proven to be false. Seeing as its nearly impossible to prove a negative, this number is likely lower than it should be.
This percentage (whether you believe its 2 percent, 3 percent, or 10 percent) doesnt apply to accusations that cant be proven one way or the other. The same studies that found 2 percent (or 7 percent in the example Im using for the following numbers) or so to be proven false also find that another 8 percent are unfounded/baseless, meaning they dont meet the criminal level of offense or were improperly coded as sexual assault.
Another 18 percent are considered informational and dont meet the definition of a crime. Another 29 percent are labeled suspended because there wasnt enough evidence to say a crime occurred. Another 18 percent involve identifying a perpetrator but something beyond the control of law enforcement keeps them from making an arrest, such as a lack of victim cooperation.
A chart linked to the study I cited above breaks down what happens after an arrest is made. One-third of those cases are rejected by the prosecution, another 21 percent are dismissed with all charges dropped, and another 2 percent are dismissed without dropping the charges. Two percent went to trial and were found not guilty, a third resulted in a guilty plea, 6 percent went to trial and were found guilty, and another 3 percent were classified as other.
So using the same logic as Dunham and others who flaunt this statistic, one would only be able to say that a smaller or equal number of accusations turn out to be true (as in, someone pled guilty or was found guilty at trial). But Dunham and others imply that the statistics mean 98 percent of accusations are definitely true, thus we should never doubt one.
Those of us who follow the explosion of accusations on college campuses against young men have wondered what would happen if Dunham herself, or someone close to her, were accused of sexual assault. It turns out shed abandon that women dont lie cl...
With the release of Taylor Swifts latest album, Reputation comes an onslaught of reviews, opinions about the singer-songwriter, and of course the sheer glee of fansSwiftieseverywhere. Even though its been three years since she released her previous album, 1989, the singer proves with Reputations $1.2 million in album sales so far that the free market responds well to her particular brand of hard work, talent, and luck.
Her heart might be that of a romantic songwriter, but her head is more like a supply-side economist, who proves over and over she is a capitalist clairvoyant.
When Swift went quiet after 1989 we worried she was losing her edge. Even when Swift finally released Look What You Made Me Do, a song from her newest album Reputation, I wasnt sure I liked it and even thought, If thats the prologue to the album, surely shes hit her peak and heading downhill.
Boy, was I wrong. Reputation is a fantastic album musically. Dozens of reviewers from Billboard to Rolling Stone are gushing over it. No pop star of the modern era has communicated the contours of her disappointment with such emotional precision and melodic sophistication, writes Jon Caramanica of The New York Times. Randy Lewis at The Los Angeles Times said Swifts talent remains intact on Reputation, her most focused, most cohesive album yet.
Swift has so many fans, and enough time had passed, theyd probably be thrilled with anything. But that wasnt good enough for Swift. Her standards for herself remain high despite Grammys and record-sales that could cause one to rest on her laurels. She successfully gives her fans the best of herself in her art. She eschews laziness, tries new sounds, and tests the limits of her ability to articulate her pain, heartache, and joy.
We, the public and the media, paraded her romantic flubs, mocking her publicly. So look what we made her do: Come back three years later with a professional, talented piece of art about which any capitalist-loving entrepreneur could boast.
Over time, Swift has learned to think like a shrewd businesswoman. Unlike many of her pop star counterparts, she appears to take the business side of her music as seriously as the artistic side. Her number one rule: Never give away your art for free. If thats not capitalism clairvoyance, I dont know what is.
She took Apple to task a couple years ago when the tech giant decided to offer a three-month trial to new subscribers without paying the artists, writers, or producers during that time. She wrote...
Thanks to the predator-outing campaign, there is a growing attempt to re-litigate Donald Trumps p*ssy-grabbing, Miss USA-leering behavior.
Trumps decision on Friday to blast Sen. Al Franken on Twitter only called more attention to the presidents own past misconduct.
But Im having none of it. This piece will be the only mention I make of Trumps personal peccadilloes and past sexual misconduct. Heres why.
When Trump first entered the Republican primary, I assumed, like many, it was a big publicity stunt. I was painfully reminded of this a few weeks ago when Kid Rock announced that, of course, he isnt running for the Senate: Who couldnt figure that out? Well, fool me once, and all that.
But once it became clear that Trump was in the primary for the long haul and had corralled a herd of supporters, I spoke out daily (several times a day) about his horrorsfrom his underlying liberalism, to his offensive treatment of women (and everyone else), to his narcotic personalitybut to no avail. He won both the primary and the presidency. What good comes now from a constant loop replaying Trumps misconduct?
Also, while the majority of the but Trump is a pig too crowd are likewise condemning Franken, color me skeptical of their sincerity. After all, photog...
Hyperkin is a company that sells videogame consoles and accessories. Instead of developing their own consoles and games like Nintendo, they create their own versions of classic consoles that play authentic cartridges.
The best-known of their products is the RetroN. Its many versions vary in price depending on how many types of games you would like them to be able to play. The RetroN that can play the most console games can run Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, the Famicom, Super Famicom, Sega Genesis, Sega Master Drive, and Sega Master System.
So instead of having to find and buy all 10 of those classic consoles to play your games, you simply need one multi-function console, usually for about $150 or less. It comes with its own wireless controller, but has ports to use any of the original controllers as well.
Hyperkin is developing a product that brings classic videogames into the modern era. Its a device for your smartphone that allows you to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on your Android. This device, called the Smart Boy, slides on the bottom of your phone and has a space for the original cartridges on the back, just like the Game Boy we grew up with.
The Smart Boy adjusts its fit to cater to the many different sizes of smartphones. Its buttons activate sections on your screen that tell your phone which button is being pressed after a little bit of setup to tailor it on a wide range of screen sizes. The top of the phone will display the game.

- Trade Genius Academy: Learn the safe, sure way to trade. https://www.TradeGeniusAcademy.com Good morning, Im still reporting on: Roy Moore Accusers Story Destroyed!, 1898 Synopsis: Desperate Democrats attempts to smear Judge Roy Moore took a serious hit last week with the revelation that their leading accuser, Delbra Adamss only piece of evidence of a relationship with Moore was a high school annual that she claimed he signed. Even troubled attorney Gloria Allred could not answer questions convincingly about the authenticity of the signature, nor would she give the annual up for professional examination by forgery experts. Case closed on Delbra Adams. So today, the desperate Dems fell back to Judge Moores first accuser, Leigh Corfman as their star witness. We had not bothered to expose her in the past because her story is so weak. Corfman appeared on NBC today to the delight of Dems and never Trumpers who lauded her performance afterwards for its credibility. [insert] But Corfman has led a troubled past. She has claimed that several pastors at various churches made sexual advances to her over the years. According to the Gateway Pundit, she has been divorced 3 times and filed bankruptcy 3 times and has been charged with multiple misdemeanors. According to The Star: She says that her teenage life became increasingly reckless with drinking, drugs, boyfriends, and a suicide attempt when she was 16. According to a Nov. 12 article in Breitbart, Corfmans own mother, Nancy Wells, age 71, said that the Washington Post convinced her daughter to give them an interview: She did not go to them. They called her. Wells then contradicted a key detail in Corfmans story in the Washington Post. She told the Post that she talked Roy Moore on a phone in her bedroom to arrange at least one encounter. However, according to Breitbart: Wells said that her daughter did not have a phone in her bedroom during that period. Sixteen years after Bush Snr launched his so-called 'war on terror' an untold number of civilians have been killed by disease, illness and by the US and UK-led military campaign In February 2003, Elliott Abrams, a US official convicted of lying to Congress over the Iran-Contra affair but cleared by President George HW Bush, spoke to the media about the impending invasion of Iraq, ordered by Bush's son. Abrams claimed in his remarks about "humanitarian reconstruction" - six priorities had driven the planning. "The first is to try to minimise the displacement and the damage to the infrastructure and the disruption of services," he said. "And the military campaign planning has had - has been tailored to try to do that, to try to minimise the impact on civilian populations." It didn't turn out that way. Sixteen years after Bush launched his so-called "war on terror", millions of people's lives have been turned upside down, Isis has been allowed to fester and spread, and Iraq is a nation at risk of fracturing apart. Moreover, an untold number of innocent civilians have been killed - by disease, illness, in gruesome tortures performed by local and foreign insurgents, and by the US and UK-led military campaign that Abrams and others vowed would be surgical.
Beiruts Criminal Court issued the verdict in the case of George al-Rif killing, sentencing the accused Tareq Yateem to death and acquitting his friend Lynn Haidar. Yateem was arrested after stabbing George el Rif 15 times in broad daylight and in front of dozens of bystanders following a traffic dispute.
The whole thing was caught on tape yet Yateems lawyer withdrew from the case without prior notice, claiming that Justice Minister Salim Jreissati had interfered in the case. If anything, the victims family should worry of interference to let this scumbag get away with his crime.
Nevertheless, the death sentence is still not the answer here and theres nothing the authorities can do for justice to be served, not when corruption is all around us and these killers are almost always protected by some politician or party. The only thing to do, sadly enough, is running for your life instead of getting into a fight with these people and trying to avoid them as much as possible.
