Thomas Jones: X marks the self "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Before it was co-opted as the pocketwatch of late capitalism a gift from the US government GPS was developed as a way to help the US air force drop its bombs just where it wanted with as little risk as possible to American lives. As with any technological breakthrough, it took decades, with false starts, moments of inspiration, patient refinements, scepticism from the brass (Were the navy, we know where we are), inter-service rivalry and a more or less steady influx of government cash. Within days of Sputniks launch in 1957, two young engineers at Johns Hopkins University were using the Russian satellites radio signal to plot and then predict its position. GPS came of age in the 1991 Gulf War.

T.J. Clark: The Art of the Russian Revolution "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

I have been trying to forget the shows in London commemorating the Bolsheviks, in particular the Royal Academys Revolution: Russian Art 1917-32. But I havent been able to: some things, some spaces and images, have stuck in the mind like shards of glass. In particular, Ive found myself from time to time back in a small dark room at the end of the Royal Academys exhibition, on the walls of which were projected mugshots of entrants to the Gulag. The room was manipulative, and I was manipulated like everyone else. There would have been a kind of obscenity in trying to resist.

Was Judge Moores Accuser's Yearbook Autograph Forged?, 1888 "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

- Wealth365 Summit - online Financial Conference - Jan. 15-20 Call 262-299-6200 or go to Good morning, Im still reporting on: Was Judge Moores Accuser's Yearbook Autograph Forged?, 1888 Synopsis: Well, the coupsters are still busying themselves at the direction of the ministry of propaganda with continuing to undermine any effort to sway the Republican majority in the United States Senate. Weve stayed a mile away from the Judge Roy Moore story because we had a tip that a certain agency had turned against Deep State and was using its intel to expose all the sex pervs supporting it. And thats why there has been this rash of sex exposes. We didnt know if the Roy Moore accusers were part of that outing for some reason so we waited. Now, this entire Roy Moore flock smells more and more like a MOP (Ministry of Propaganda) fiction. Heres the evidence: According to a blog author whose name I probably shouldnt mention out loud lets just call him a military historian who is following these events closely. The Defend-Judge-Roy-Moore group pretty much collapsed yesterday afternoon when, at 2:25, a lady named Beverly Young Nelson, age 56, held a press conference in New York with embattled attorney Gloria Allred alleging Judge Roy Moore sexually harassed her when she was 16 years old. She showed a copy of her high school annual with a purported inscription signed by Roy Moore D.A. Even Judge Jeanine went running for the hills after that. Tonight, Hannity gave Judge Moore 24 hours to fully explain or drop out. But hold on there. This mornings light has called this revelation into serious question. Problem #1: The inscription reads: To a sweeter more beautiful girl, I could not say, Merry Christmas. Signed Roy Moore D.A. Do you remember your high school annual days? Since when did one come out before Christmas. They came out just a month or two before the end of school like April or May. Problem #2: Roy Moore was never a D.A. He was an assistant D.A. Oops!!! But it gets worse. Problem #3: could it be that someone at CNN retouched the part at the top right? So it looks like someone named Roy did write the part on the left, but from Moore on is written in blue ink, not black ink. Duhhhh. Time for Truth and Reconciliation for the US and Russia "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Alice Slater

NATOs recent provocative decision to build up its military forces across Europe by sending four new multinational battalions to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland, comes at a time of great turmoil and intense questioning of global security with new forces for both good and evil straining to make their mark on the course of history.   This weekend, at the Vatican, Pope Francis held an international conference to follow up on the recently negotiated treaty to prohibit the possession, use, or threat of use of nuclear weapons leading to their complete elimination which was negotiated in the UN General Assembly this summer by 122 nations, although none of the nine nuclear weapons states participated. Honored at the conference were members of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) which worked with friendly governments to hold nuclear weapons unlawful, and has recently been awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its successful efforts.  The Pope issued a statement that the  doctrine of nuclear deterrence in which countries threaten to wreak catastrophic nuclear devastation on their opponents should they be attacked with nuclear bombs has become ineffective against 21st century threats like terrorism asymmetrical conflicts, environmental problems and poverty.  While the church once held that such an insane policy could be moral and lawful, it no longer views it as such.   And there are plans for the church to examine the so-called theory of just war with an eye to prohibiting the very morality and legality of war itself.

In the US, an unprecedented examination of our hidden history has begun.  People are questioning the numerous honorary statues memorializing Civil War generals from the South who fought to preserve slavery.   Indigenous First Peoples are questioning the adulation given to Christopher Columbus, who discovered America for Spain and was responsible for enormous slaughters and bloodshed of natives in the first colonies established in the Americas.   Famous and powerful men are being questioned in an avalanche of truth-telling about how they used their professional power to take sexual advantage of women who feared for their career prospects in theater, publishing, business, academia.

Unfortunately we have barely begun to tell the truth about the US relationship with Russia and appear to be moving backwards in the US with calls for Russia Today, the Russian equivalent of the BBC or Al Jazeera, to be registered in the US as a foreign agent!  This is certainly not consistent with the US belief in the sanctity of a free press and will be challenged in the courts.    Indeed, there is a huge effort to misrepresent the provocations of NATO, to gloss over the history of the nuclear arms race the refusal to take up Gorbachevs offer to Reagan to eliminate all our nuclear weapons provided the US gave up its...

7 Reasons You Should Start Taking Cold Showers #4 Is Astonishing "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By  Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Standing under a frigid spray of water might seem like the last thing you should do when getting ready to start your day, but we promise you, the practice results in numerous health benefits.

To begin with, you might be wondering, What, exactly, is a cold shower? Well, just like it sounds, a cold shower also referred to as the James Bond Shower is when you turn the water temperature down to freezing. It is frighteningly cold, yet deliciously awesome.

Not only does regularly taking a cold shower improve the quality of your skin and hair, it can stimulate weight loss and even speed up muscle soreness and recovery. Following are 7 reasons you should start taking cold showers. #4 is quite astonishing

1) Makes You More Alert

Lets be honest, it isnt easy getting ready for work in the morning. The last few minutes before you roll out of bed feel like the most precious in the world. And basking under a shower of hot water is certainly relaxing. But, it doesnt get you in the correct mindset to whoop some butt at the office.

This is why cold showers are so awesome. When you take a cold shower, you automatically start breathing deeper. This is a natural response to...

Notes on Anti-Fascist Self-Defense Training : 10 Lessons from the Russian Anti-Fascist Experience "IndyWatch Feed War"

Anti-fascists on May Day 2014 in Murmansk.

The Trump presidency has seen a boom of fascist organizing and anti-fascist resistance in North America. Strategies and tactics that originally developed in the European context have spread around the USA. Meanwhile, in Russia, both Nazi violence and anti-fascist activity have died down to a mere fraction of what they were at the peak of the years of confrontation, 2002-2011. In the following text, a participant in the Russian anti-fascist movement suggests some conclusions about how to train for anti-fascist confrontations.

In publishing this perspective, we aim to facilitate dialogue between those fighting fascism in a variety of conditions all around the world. We believe it is crucial for anti-fascists to learn from history and from each others experience. If the Russian model for anti-fascist action reached its limits based on internal factors, as described below, we should take care not to reproduce those elements in our own organizing. Likewise, we encourage readers to bear in mind the political, social, and legal differences between the Russian and US contexts; youll do no one any good by ending up in prison on weapons charges unless the alternative would have been even worse. In the long run, fascism wont be defeated simply by individual courage or force of arms, but by building a broad-based, participatory movement that addresses the social and economic problems fascists capitalize on to recruit for their organizations.

Antifascist Attitude, a documentary made in 2008. Click on the option for English subtitles.

Introduction from the Author

Unfortunately, this text cannot go into detail about the history of Russian anti-fascism. That text has yet to be written. You can get a general sense from two texts that appeared between 2009 and 2011, before it was obvious that the situation was about to change:

There are a number of reasons why both fascist terror and anti-fascist organizing have drastically diminished in Russia over the past decade. First of all, Russian society is less dysfunctional. During the economic crisis of the 1990s, entire communities were devastated due to drugs and crime; peo...

China surpasses US with the worlds most powerful computers in latest TOP500 list "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Linux Now Runs On All Top 500 Supercomputers In The World

According to the TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers which shows that all of the worlds fastest supercomputers run Linux, reports ZDNet. The previous two exceptions on the list Chinese IBM POWER computers which ran AIX, are no longer on the November 2017 list.

Linux first appeared on the TOP500 list in 1998, and by 2004 Linux had become the favorite operating system in supercomputing. There were 485 Linux-powered systems in the TOP500 list in 2015, which increased to 498 out of 500 in 2016 and in 2017 it is running on all the 500 supercomputers in the list.

Linux [became] the driving force behind the breakthroughs in computing power that have fueled research and technological innovation, as reported in The Linux Foundations 20 years of

Further, the TOP500 list that is released twice annually, shows that China has overtaken the US in the total number of ranked systems by a margin of 202 to 144 in the TOP500 list 2017. This is the first time that China has surpassed the US in the rankings. Only a few months ago, the US had 169 systems in the Top500 compared to Chinas 159.

It is the largest number of supercomputers China has ever claimed on the TOP500 ranking, with the US presence shrinking to its lowest level since the lists inception 25 years ago, TOP500 said in a statement.

While the US ranks second in the world for supercomputers, Japan comes in at third and Germany at fourth with 35 and 20 supercomputers respectively. These were followed by France and UK with 18 and 15 supercomputers respectively in the TOP500 list 2017.

Also, according to the new TOP500 list, Chinas Sunway TaihuLight for the fourth time in a row retained its number one ranking with a performance of 93.01 petaflops on the High Performance Linpack (HPL) test. A petaflop is a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, another Chinese computer once again maintained the number two position with 33.86 petaflops. Tianhe-2, which is based on Intel chips, was the number one system on the TOP500 list for three consecutive years until it was displaced by Sunway TaihuLight in June last year.

In terms of aggregate performance, China came in first with its supercomputers representing 35.4 percent of the Top500s flops, while the US came in second with 29.6 percent.

In the meanwhile, Chinas overtaking of the US in the total number of ranked supercomputers is not re...

Los Alamos National Laboratory is Using a 750-Node Raspberry Pi Supercomputer "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Cheap Supercomputers: LANL has 750-node Raspberry Pi Development Clusters

One of the more esoteric announcements to come out of SuperComputing 17, an annual conference on high-performance computing, is that one of the largest US scientific institutions is investing in Raspberry Pi-based clusters to aid in development work. The Los Alamos National Laboratory's [LANL] High Performance Computing Division now has access to 750-node Raspberry Pi clusters as part of the first step towards a development program to assist in programming much larger machines.

The platform at LANL leverages a modular cluster design from BitScope Designs, with five rack-mount Bitscope Cluster Modules, each with 150 Raspberry Pi boards with integrated network switches. With each of the 750 chips packing four cores, it offers a 3000-core highly parallelizable platform that emulates an ARM-based supercomputer, allowing researchers to test development code without requiring a power-hungry machine at significant cost to the taxpayer. The full 750-node cluster, running 2-3 W per processor, runs at 1000W idle, 3000W at typical and 4000W at peak (with the switches) and is substantially cheaper, if also computationally a lot slower. After development using the Pi clusters, frameworks can then be ported to the larger scale supercomputers available at LANL, such as Trinity and Crossroads.

My Conversation with Sujatha Gidla "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Here is the transcript and podcast, I enjoyed this chat very much.  Here is part of the opening summary:

Sujatha Gidla was an untouchable in India, but moved to the United States at the age of 26 and is now the first Indian woman to be employed as a conductor on the New York City Subway. In her memoir Ants Among Elephants, she explores the antiquities of her mother, her uncles, and other members of her family against modern Indias landscape.

Our conversation considered the nature and persistence of caste, gender issues in India, her time as a revolutionary, New York City lifestyle and neighborhoods and dining, religion, living in America versus living in India, Bob Dylan and Dalit music, American identity politics, the nature of Marxism, Halldor Laxness, and why she left her job at the Bank of New York to become a New York City subway conductor, among other topics.

Here is one sequence:

GIDLA: Actually, the only relation I have with my family members is political views.

GIDLA: If we have to connect on familial links, we will always be fighting and killing each other. All that we talk about with my mother is politics and untouchability and caste and Modi and things like that.

Its the same thing with my sister also. This is where we connect. Otherwise, we are like enemies. My brother, were completely alienated from each other, firstly because he goes to church now. We never used to go to church before. Hes into this Iacocca. Is there a name . . . ?

Homeless Ex-Soldier Dies Hours After Being Evicted From City Center "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By  Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

We are failing our veterans. As a society, we are failing those who risked their lives to protect our freedoms. If you need evidence of this, look no further than the following story

An 82-year-old veteran known as George recently died just hours after he was evicted from a city center squat. The Mirror UK reports that though an autopsy has not yet been conducted, he is believed to have passed away from bronchial pneumonia a simple condition which could have been remedied, had he received help in time.

George had been living in an abandoned building in Manchester, along with 12 other homeless ex-servicemen. They were all evicted, however; this, in turn, forced them to brave the cold. Because George was in bad shape, his band of brothers walked with him to Salford Royal Hospital. It was there that he died, with four of him by his bedside.

To add insult to injury, George proudly wore his military service medals at all times. According to reports, he lived on the street for roughly 20 years.

Salford Armed Forces Veterans Network (SAFVN) did not know George personally, but condemned his unnecessary death nonetheless. The group said his death was a damning indictment on support services that are available for veterans who are homeless across the country. Chris Barwood, chairman of the SAFVN, added that George was a forgotten hero who served his country but had become invisible.

Barwood called for a national campaign to find homes for...

R.I.P. root9B, We Hardly Knew Ya! "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

root9B, a company that many in the security industry consider little more than a big-name startup aimed at cashing in on the stock markets insatiable appetite for cybersecurity firms, surprised no one this week when it announced it was ceasing operations at the end of the year.

Founded in 2011, Colorado Springs, Colo. based root9B Technologies touted itself as an IT security training firm staffed by an impressive list of ex-military leaders with many years of cybersecurity experience at the Department of Defense and National Security Agency (NSA). As it began to attract more attention from investors, root9Bs focus shifted to helping organizations hunt for cyber intruders within their networks.

By 2015, root9B was announcing lucrative cybersecurity contracts with government agencies and the infusion of millions from investors. The companys stock was ballooning in price, reaching an all-time high in mid-May 2015.

That was just days after root9B issued a headline-grabbing report about how its cyber intelligence had single-handedly derailed a planned Russian cyber attack on several U.S. financial institutions.

The report, released May 12, 2015, claimed root9B had uncovered plans by an infamous Russian hacking group to target several banks. The company said the thwarted operation was orchestrated by Fancy Bear/Sofacy, a so-called advanced persistent threat (APT) hacking group known for launching sophisticated phishing attacks aimed at infiltrating some of the worlds biggest corporations.  root9B released its Q1 2015 earnings two days later, reporting record revenues.

On May 20, 2015, KrebsOnSecurity published a rather visceral dissection of that root9B report: Security Firm Redefines APT; African Phishing Threat. The story highlighted the thinness of the reports claims, pointing to multiple contradictory findings by other security firms which suggested the company had merely detected several new phishing domains being erected by a comparativel...

The Daily Mail, the very symbol of journalistic integrity in Britain, [Ed: LOL!] has scored a major coup - it has revealed the location of RT's UK office. We haven't been able to confirm the number of investigative journalists involved in finding the address - presumably by googling it. The biggest surprise to dedicated Daily Mail readers will be that RT is not operating from a hollowed-out volcano on a super villain's tropical island, but actually from a gray, aging (cold) skyscraper. The Daily Mail article, jumping wholeheartedly upon the now-speeding anti-Russia bandwagon in Britain, carries the breathless headline: "Putin's lying machine: Revealed, how Russia's spewing out ruthless propaganda from a Moscow-funded TV station - right next to Westminster."

Tencent Profit Rises Nearly 70% on Mobile-Games Growth "IndyWatch Feed War"

November 15, 2017

HONG KONGChinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. said third-quarter net profit rose nearly 70% from a year earlier, driven by advertising revenue gains and strong growth at its mobile-games and digital-content divisions.

Tencents shares have been on a tear this year, doubling its market capitalization to almost $475 billion last week. It has raised its international profile with a number of recent acquisitions as well, including buying Epic Games Inc. and a majority stake in electric-vehicle maker Tesla Inc.

And last week, Tencent bought a 12% stake in Los Angeles-based social media company Snap Inc.

The company, which is based in the southern tech boomtown of Shenzhen, said its earnings for the quarter rose to more than 18 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) from about 10.6 billion yuan a year earlier. Analysts polled by S&P Global Market Intelligence expected a profit of 15.7 billion yuan. Tencent also beat revenue expectations.

The bulk of Tencents revenue comes from online games. For the quarter, online-games revenue rose 48% from a year earlier to 26.8 billion yuan. The company had at least four of the 10 highest-grossing games in Apple Inc.s app store during the quarter, according to App Annie and Citi Research.

Last week, Tencents online publishing unit, China Literature Ltd., surged 86% in its Hong Kong trading debut after raising about $1.1 billion in an initial public offering. And on Thursday, Yixin Group Ltd., Chinas largest online auto retailing platform, will go public; Tencent owns 24% of that company. Demand was high during Yixins bookbuilding period.

Founded in 1998, Tencent is one of three major internet firms in China, along with e-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and search company Baidu Inc. Tencent is the largest videogame publisher in the world by revenue, but it is best known in China for its WeChat and QQ...

Science Suggests That Relationship Come Down To 2 Basic Traits "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By Fattima Mahdi Truth Theory

Love is a beautiful thing. Lasting relationships are not exempt from arguments and emotional roller-coasters. Researchers have confirmed that there are two basic traits that will generate prosperous relationships. Have you guessed it yet?

Given the fact that most marriages seem doomed for divorce, everybody wants to know what the secret is to a happy and long-lasting relationship. Psychologist John Gottman and Robert Levenson are two social psychologists that conducted a longitudinal study into how couples interact with each other and the impact this has on the longevity of their relationship.

Gottman and Levenson gathered newlywed couples and asked them questions about their relationship, major conflicts and positive memories. The subjects physiological responses were recorded, namely, heart rate, blood flow and perspiration. Using these recordings, Gottman separated the couples into two categories : Masters and Disasters.

When speaking about the Disasters, Gottman said their heart rates were quick, their sweat glands were active, and their blood flow was fast. These couples indicated a fight-or-flight response to the questions asked. However, the Masters were calm and connected, even when they were fighting. He explains that these couples created a climate of trust and intimacy that made both of th...

U.S. mounts air strike against al Shabaab militants in Somalia "IndyWatch Feed War"

MOGADISHU (Reuters) The United States military has carried out an air strike in Somalia against al Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked Islamist insurgency that wants to topple the U.N.-backed government, the U.S. Africa Command said on Wednesday.

It said several militants were killed in the strike 60 miles northwest of the capital, Mogadishu, on Tuesday at about 1500 GMT. It was coordinated with the Somali government, AfriCom said in a statement.

Image may contain: nature

Al Shabaab has publicly committed to planning and conducting attacks against the U.S. and our partners in the region, AfriCom said.

Earlier this month, the U.S. warned of a threat to its diplomatic staff in Mogadishu and directed all non-essential staff to leave the capital.

Al Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 and has lost control of most of Somalias cities and towns. But the group retains a strong presence in the south and center and can still carry out major attacks. It was blamed for bombings in Mogadishu last month that killed more than 350 people.

The group aims to topple Somalias government, drive out African Union peacekeeping troops and impose its own harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

US General to Congress: US Would Struggle to Win War Against North Korea "IndyWatch Feed World"

Earlier this month, the Pentagon offered scant details to a group of concerned lawmakers regarding its assessment of casualties that could result from a military conflict with North Korea. However, last week, the Pentagons assessment was repudiated by one of its own, when retired Lt. General Jan-Marc Jouas penned a letter with a different take to the same group of lawmakers.

In detailing his views on the potential outcomes of a conflict on the Korean peninsula, Jouas the former deputy commander of U.S. Forces Korea painted a decidedly troubling picture for Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL). While some government officials had previously warned that the death toll in South Koreas capital, Seoul, could reach the tens of thousands within minutes, Jouas in addition to noting this near-certitude also stated that the U.S. military would be woefully unprepared to take on North Korean forces within their own territory in spite of the U.S. technological advantage.

The retired general asserted that U.S. forces stationed in South Korea, totaling around 30,000, would struggle to effectively attack the North Korean army, due to a stark disadvantage in numbers. Jouas writes that the 28,500 U.S. Armed Forces personnel in South Korea are vastly outnumbered by North Korean forces, as well as ROK [South Korean] forces that will conduct the overwhelming majority of the fighting. North Korea has claimed that its already sizable armed forces have been recently bolstered by nearly 5 million new volunteers.

Jouas once deeply involved in developing plans to counter potential attacks on South Korea by the North also notes that, unlike in previous conflicts, the U.S. would be unable to amass its forces prior to engagement, as it could take days to months [for U.S. soldiers] to arrive in theater [of war]. The upshot would be that any operation could get off to a rocky start that would in the meantime place the 25 million inhabitants of Seoul in grave danger. This vulnerability, along with North Koreas conventional or chemical weapons, would inevitably result in an enormous casualty and evacuee crisis, one that would include over a hundred thousand non-combatant Americans.

Forget 'Russiagate': A new Special Counsel should investigate real scandals of US election "IndyWatch Feed World"

Sixteen months after the Russiagate investigation was started it has produced a sloppily drafted though aggressively worded indictment against Paul Manafort and Rick Gates relating to their business dealings in Ukraine which does not touch on the Russiagate collusion allegations; a cynical and in my opinion oppressive indictment against George Papadopoulos - which has resulted in his guilty plea - because he mixed up the dates of his first meeting with a Maltese professor, but which also does not touch on the Russiagate collusion allegations; rumours of a third indictment against Michael Flynn because of his alleged failure to register properly his lobbying work for the Turkish government, but which apparently will also not touch on the Russiagate collusion allegations; and relentless hounding of Carter Page, whose "crime" is that he has longstanding and openly acknowledged business contacts in Russia and that he gave a public speech during the election at Moscow's New Economic School.

Sessions Must Go! DOJ Launched Mueller Investigation Where No Crimes Existed But No Uranium One Probe Where Crimes Are Abundant "IndyWatch Feed"

Guest post by Joe Hoft

The time has come Jeff Sessions Must Resign!

Yesterday US Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke in front of the House Judiciary Committee on a number of issues.  Sessions is famous for recusing himself from any Russia related investigations almost immediately after becoming AG earlier this year.  This resulted in his Assistant AG Rod Rosenstein launching a Special Counsel on Trump Russia collusion and appointing his friend Robert Mueller as the special counsel.

During the hearing yesterday Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) grilled Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the many clear crimes surrounding the Clinton Campaign, the Democrat Party, the FBI, James Comey, Mueller, Rosenstein, Uranium One, the Clinton Foundation and the Russian Dossier.

The Attorney General was noticeably uncomfortable and irritated with the questioning.  Rep. Jordan laid out the specific crimes of collusion committed by FBI and DNC operatives in 2016. Jordan pointed out the fake dossier and asked AG Sessions if this was the impetus to spy on the Trump campaign? Sessions would not answer.

At the end of the questioning Rep. Jordan asked Sessions if he would appoint a special counsel to investigate this criminal activity by the FBI and DNC.  Sessions told him he would not appoint a special counsel.

Rep. Jim Jordan: Doesnt that warrant in addition to all the things we know about James Comey in 2016, doesnt that warrant naming a second special counsel?

AG Jeff Sessions: I would say what it looks like is not enough basis to appoint a special counsel.

AG Sessions refuses to create special counsels for any number of criminal actions that took place during the prior corrupt Obama Administration.

Sean Hannity last night outlined in one of the most thorough presentations to date of the many crimes related to the Clintons and the Obama Administration.

But no, AG Sessions believes that t...

French foreign minister to meet Hariri as Lebanon crisis escalates "IndyWatch Feed War"

Stephanie Mahe, AFP | Lebanons President Michel Aoun during a state visit to Paris on September 26, 2017.

Text by FRANCE 24

Latest update : 2017-11-15

Lebanons president accused Saudi Arabia on Wednesday of detaining the Lebanese prime minister, in an escalation of the crisis that followed Saad Hariris surprise resignation from the kingdom almost two weeks ago.

In comments published on the official Twitter account of the president, Michel Aoun said nothing justifies that Hariri has not returned home so far.

We consider him detained, arrested in violation of international laws, Aoun said. It was the first time Aoun describes Hariri as a detainee. He had previously only questioned the mysterious circumstances under which Hariri resigned.

The rhetoric further deepens the crisis with Saudi Arabia, which is a backer of Hariri, a dual Saudi-Lebanese national.

French foreign minister to meet Hariri

Hariri resigned as Lebanons prime minister 11 days ago in a video broadcast from Saudi Arabia and has yet to return home. Saudi Arabia denies holding Hariri against his will.

Frances Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is arriving in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to meet with Hariri and Saudi officials, a diplomatic source said.

Le Drian will meet with powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the capital Riyadh before holding talks with Hariri on Thursday, the aide told a foreign ministry briefing.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid a surprise visit to the kingdom last week.

Many believe Hariris decision was dictated by the kingdom amid its intensifying feud with Iran over influence in the region. Iran supports Hariris main rival in Lebanon, the Shiite militant g...

North Korea says Donald Trump deserves the death penalty "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

North Koreas state-run propaganda machine has seized on Donald Trumps aborted trip to the DMZ, calling him a coward for canceling his visit to the heavily fortified border. And just to make sure there is nothing lost in translation, state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmin said Trump deserves the death penalty for insulting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

An editorial in the ruling party newspaper focused its anger on Trump in a recent issue, criticizing him after he vowed to bring the North Korean regime to heel if it doesnt surrender its nuclear weapons and half its program of nuclear enrichment during a speech to South Korean lawmakers last week during the beginning of Trumps 12-day, five-nation tour across Asia which was intended to rally regional support for the USs push to force North Korea to disarm.

The worst crime for which he can never be pardoned is that he dared [to] malignantly hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership, the editorial said.

He should know that he is just a hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people, it added.

Though Trump recently re-engaged in the verbal jousting last week when he tweeted that he would never call Kim short and fat apparently responding to a message broadcast on state TV. There has been no love lost between the two, who have traded insults since Trump took office in late January. However, in a sign that relations between the two long-time adversaries might be warming, the North has refrained from carrying out another missile test since its Sept 15. launch.  Concerns about military action have abated since the summer when Trump swore to attack North Korea with fire and fury the likes of which the world has never seen if Kim Jong Un continued to threaten Americans.

The Guardian pointed out that the members of the ruling Kim dynasty past and present enjoy near god-like status in North Korea. The editorial also took a dig at Trumps failure to tour the demilitarised zone (DMZ) dividing the two Koreas a traditional stop-off for senior US officials visiting the South.

The editorial also took a dig at Trumps failure to tour the DMZ, which divides the two Koreas and is a traditional stop-off for senior US officials visiting the South.

Trumps helicopter taking him to the DMZ had turned back after just five minutes due to bad weather an explanation North Korea has dismissed as a cover for cowardice.

It wasnt the weather, the editorial said: He was just too scared to face the glaring eyes of our troops.

Liberals are ignoring what's important regarding Trump to focus on irrelevant or made-up gaffes "IndyWatch Feed World"

The left should be encouraging the president's moderation on foreign policy rather than distorting the truth about alleged gaffes. With his party reeling from a wave of electoral defeats on Tuesday, Donald Trump stood before the South Korean National Assembly on Wednesday to tout his alleged victories as president. After a desultory Wikipedia-style description of the achievements of the South Korean miracle, the nation's remarkable economic recovery after the devastation of civil war, Trump said, "The United States is going through something of a miracle itself. Our stock market is at an all-time high. Unemployment is at a 17-year low. We are defeating ISIS. We are strengthening our judiciary, including a brilliant Supreme Court justice, and on and on and on." It's unclear why South Koreans would care about the appointment of Neil Gorsuch, if they're even aware of it, but Trump then took his diplomatic tactlessness a step further by plugging for one of his properties: "The women's U.S. Open was held this year at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and it just happened to be won by a great Korean golfer, Sung Hyun Park, and eight of the top ten players were from Korea."

The stars came out in Hollywood on November 2nd, or at least some of them did. Our job is to look after them. In attendance were Arnold Schwarzenegger and actor Gerald Butler. Entertainment was provided by the singer Seal.

Hollywood Jewish royalty was thick on the ground, the grub was strictly kosher and billionaires competed to see who could give the most to such a worthy cause. The 1,200 attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel donated a record $53.8 million, with Oracle founder Larry Ellison leading the pack with a contribution of $16.6 million. Israeli media mogul Haim Saban, Hillary Clintons most generous supporter, served as host of the event and donated $5 million. Two weeks ago, a similar gathering of 1,200 in New York City dubbed A Night of Heroes, attended by GOP major donor casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, raised $35 million, $7 million coming from Adelson personally. Ted Cruz and the Circle of Political Cuckoldry "IndyWatch Feed"

NOTE: This article was originally published at Right On on March 28, 2016. Im re-posting it here as the site is now defunct.

Behind every weak man stands a woman who gets her jollies from emasculating him. Ted Cruz and his wife Heidi are the Bill and Hillary Clinton of the Republican Party: triangulating psychopaths who seek power above all else.

2016s presidential election has devolved into a nationwide Maury Povich brawl, and my response is Good. The latest mudslinging match between last, best hope Donald Trump and GOP establishment last man standing Ted Cruz has revolved around their wives and sex lives. A few days ago, the National Enquirer dropped their own H-bomb, publishing an expose claiming that Cruzsqueaky clean, principled Christian conservative Ted Cruzhas cheated on his wife with five other womenthree of whom have already been identified.

While the story has sent the GOP cucksultant class into meltdown mode, Cruz himself isnt actually denying the allegations, instead calling them garbage. Even his most fervent fans arent defending him on the basis that hes too honest to break his marriage vows; theyre claiming hes too much of a dweeb to get laid. Maine-- The 1st State To Pass Medicaid Expansion At The Ballot Box-- A Guest Post By Jared Golden "IndyWatch Feed"

There's a battle raging in Maine right now because, after the Trumpist governor of the state, Paul LePage, kept vetoing the legislature's Medicaid expansion, the citizens voted to expand it in a ballot initiative. LePage then announced he would "veto" that too! Yesterday, Jared Golden, the House Majority Whip and a candidate for Congress (endorsed by Blue America) penned an OpEd for The Hill explaining the situation to folks outside the state who might not be following it as closely. This is something the whole country needs to understand.
Give Maine voters what they want and expand Medicaid in the state
by Jared Golden

Maine made history last Tuesday by becoming the first state to pass Medicaid expansion at the ballot box. After five unsuccessful attempts to override Governor Paul LePages vetoes, Maine people took matters into their own hands and elected to expand healthcare coverage to 70,000 of their neighbors.

On the heels of the GOPs attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) earlier this year, Medicaid expansion received a majority of the vote in both of Maines Congressional Districts, including Maines Second Congressional District (ME-2) which went for President Trump in 2016.

In 2016, ME-2 also supported a referendum to increase the minimum wage from $7.50 to $12 by the year 2020, and approved a bond to invest in the states infrastructure.

Taken together these three voter-approved initiatives say a lot about a district that voted for Pres......

CIA Narrative on WikiLeaks Dominates Media Coverage of Trump Jr. Correspondence "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

(SP The CIA contends WikiLeaks is not a media organization but rather a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia. Response by the U.S. press to a report from The Atlantic on correspondence between WikiLeaks and Donald Trump Jr. wholly adopted the CIAs narrative, even though the public still lacks proof of such cooperation.

Moreover, although The Atlantic report merely shows communications between a Trump campaign official and WikiLeaks, it was treated as significant confirmation of Russian collusion.

Former CIA director Leon Panetta appeared on CNN and said the correspondence was another additional piece of evidence related to the activities of either [Trump] family members or members of his campaign working with the Russians in one way or another. Panetta maintained there was no question WikiLeaks was a cutout for the Russian government.

The basic message that should have gone out to all campaign individuals is do not interact with the Russians, Panetta added, when asked what the Trump campaign should have done when contacted by WikiLeaks. Do not interact with a foreign adversary that could very well come in and try to influence this election.

This is yet another level interest by the campaign in foreign assistance and not just any foreign assistance but foreign assistance tied to the Kremlin, Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, a ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said on CNN.

When host Wolf Blitzer asked Schiff to be precise on the relationship between the Kremlin and WikiLeaks, Schiff answered, Well, the Kremlin, well, was certainly using WikiLeaks to publish these documents. I think it gave them a certain level of deniability that the more direct cutouts like Guccifer 2.0 or DCLeaks that could be traced right back to the Kremlin would ultimately not provide them. But nonetheless, WikiLeaks is a sophisticated actor.

I fully believe that they knew exactly where they were getting this information about and were more than happy to coordinate with the Russians. I dont think that this is an issue so much of theyre being useful idiots as opposed to witting participants. There is a division of opinion, I think, among members about just how witting or useful they were. Nonetheless, the fact of the matter was this was clearly one of the outlets the Russians were using for publication.

Tony Blinken, a former deputy secretary of state under President Barack Obama, also a...

Arizona Sen. John McCain recently called for Alabama candidate Roy Moore to drop out of his states Senate race in light of the unproven sexual harassment allegations against him. However, McCains skeletons have just resurfaced

From America News Hub:

What a lot of people seem to forget about John McCain is that hes been a womanizer for decades. In fact, he was accused of sexual misconduct during his 2008 presidential campaign and he immediately dismissed the charges.

From Western Journalism:

However, McCain sang a different tune during his 2008 presidential when the senator faced his own accusations of sexual misconduct with a lobbyist 30 years his junior.

McCain was among the very first so called establishment Republicans to rush to judgment about the allegations against Moore, characterizing them as disqualifying and declaring that the candidate should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of.

Idiots, Shills: Buzzfeed's 'crack investigators' discover Russia funded Russian elections "IndyWatch Feed World"

BuzzFeed's latest "explosive" scoop on "secret" Russian financing of a 2016 election turned out to be an instant hit by burying a key detail: it was a Russian election. On Tuesday, the US media outlet ran a story headlined "Secret Finding: 60 Russian Payments 'To Finance Election Campaign of 2016'". The 959-word article opens with the revelation that during August 2016, at the height of US election euphoria, the Russian Foreign Ministry wired $30,000 to its embassy in Washington.

ICC's probe of war crimes in Afghanistan a sham & cover-up for US "IndyWatch Feed World"

When The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) announced it was planning to investigate alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, the timing seemed appropriate. The announcement by the ICC on November 3 came within days of a deadly airstrike by US forces in northern Afghanistan, which UN officials say killed ten civilians. But the history of the intergovernmental court since it was set up some 15 years ago gives pause to hope that it might deliver justice in Afghanistan. For many critics, the ICC is a byword for self-serving Western political control, either whitewashing crimes or smearing designated opponents. A pertinent question is: why has it taken the ICC so long to investigate alleged crimes in Afghanistan's war?

Politico tells us that President Trump has a "wrenching" decision to make about the Alabama Senate race:

White House officials plan to convene a meeting to talk through their options soon, and Trump is widely expected to address the predicament publicly when he returns from abroad. In order for the president to get involved, some aides to the president say, he would need an airtight plan that limits his political exposure to any fallout.
I don't understand. Republicans love Trump. What's the potential "fallout" for him?
Its a vexing call for Trump. If he tries to pressure Moore out of the race, as some people close to the White House expect him to do, theres no guarantee that the candidate will oblige.
I know Trump didn't endorse Moore in the primary, but Moore and Trump are both Republicans and Trump is the president of the United States. Not only is Trump the president, he's admired and loved by voters in his party. At least that's what we're told. It ought to be Moore -- a man who hold no political office right now -- who's in the vulnerable position. You'd think it would be risky for him to defy a man whose approval rating in his state is nearly 60%. And yet Moore probably would defy him.
Intervening in a race against the candidate backed by conservative activists could also be seen as at odds with Trumps own insurgent campaign in 2016.
But it's Trump. It's supposedly his movement. The slogans are his: Drain the swamp. Make America great again. Why wouldn't he be given leeway to define what his movement does and doesn't stand for?

But that's the problem for Trump: It really isn't his movement.
The establishment did everything they could to destroy Trump, and we the people stood with him. It would be very disappointing to see Trump believe these lies and turn on a rock-solid conservative like Roy Moore, said GOP state Rep. Ed Henry.
What Henry is saying here is what Steve Bannon has said: that "we the [wingnut] people" define what the Trump movement is, and true believers can say at any time that Trump is disloyal to Trumpism. Trump may have altered the contours of conservatism -- it's now protectionist and pro-Russia -- but his ability to shape conservatism only goes so far. He can't say that Moore has to go. Backing Moore is a #MAGA litmus test right now. Even Trump has to pass it.

'Weinstein level stuff': Former secret service agent had to protect women from Joe Biden "IndyWatch Feed World"

A former Secret Service agent assigned to the Vice President Joe Biden residence claims that the Service often had to protect female agents from him. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the agent asserted that, "We had to cancel the VP Christmas get together at the Vice President's house because Biden would grope all of our wives and girlfriend's asses." The annual party was for agents and Navy personnel who were tasked with protecting the Biden family. "He would mess with every single woman or teen. It was horrible," the agent said. According to the source, a Secret Service agent once got suspended for a week in 2009 for shoving Biden after he cupped his girlfriend's breast while the couple was taking a photo with him. The situation got so heated, the source told Cassandra Fairbanks, that others had to step in to prevent the agent from hitting the then-Vice President.

Love him or hate him, Lebanese want PM Hariri home But is he under a Hezbollah death sentence? "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP / by Sara HUSSEIN | A poster of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri that reads Your dignity is Lebanons dignity is seen on the highway north of Beirut on November 14, 2017

BEIRUT (AFP)  Lebanons divided politicians rarely agree on anything, but they have fleetingly united in calling for resigned Prime Minister Saad Hariri to return home, even if their motivations vary vastly.

Hariri announced his resignation on November 4, in a shock statement delivered from Saudi Arabia on the kingdoms Al-Arabiya television station.

The resignation, which reportedly took even his closest advisers by surprise, as well as his decision to announce it from abroad, quickly led to speculation about whether he had been forced to step down by Riyadh.

Then, a massive wave of arrests of high-profile figures within Saudi Arabia led to swirling rumours about whether Hariri too was being held against his will.

Hariris detractors, including the powerful Hezbollah movement and its allies, have used the speculation to paint him as feeble and at the mercy of his Saudi sponsors.

On Wednesday, President Michel Aoun, a political rival of Hariris despite the deal they made to form a government, directly charged Riyadh with having detained the Lebanese premier.

Nothing justifies the failure of Prime Minister Saad Hariri to return for 12 days, therefore we consider him to be held and detained, contrary to the Vienna Convention, Aoun said in a tweet on the official Lebanese presidency account.

Aoun is an ally of the powerful Hezbollah movement that has long been a thorn in Hariris side, and the groups leader Hassan Nasrallah has also suggested the premier was being held.

Imminent return?

Hariris own Future Movement has called his return its top priority.

Hariri tried to put paid to suggestions he was being held against his will in an interview with his partys Future TV on Saturday.

I am free here. If I want to travel tomorrow, I will, Hariri said.

I will return to Lebanon very soon, he added, pledging to land in Beirut in two or three days.

But he has yet to return, and pronouncements from France and other countries have suggested he may not have the freedom of movement he professes.

Where I Agree With Mo Brooks "IndyWatch Feed"

In a way, I sympathize with Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama. I understand how incredibly valuable it is to have a seat in the U.S. Senate, and I wouldnt want to concede one to the Republicans, especially in a dark blue state. The issue is amplified by the fact that the Republicans currently enjoy a narrow 52-48 majority, and we should keep in mind also that John McCain is very ill and that Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi has missed time recently because of poor health. The Republicans want to pass a tax bill through the Senate that is dependent on them having fifty seats, at a minimum, and losing the Alabama seat would get them down to a very uneasy fifty-one. Besides these factors, though, I can understand where Brooks is coming from when he says this:

America faces huge challenges that are vastly more important than contested sexual allegations from four decades ago, Brooks said in a text message to Who will vote in Americas best interests on Supreme Court justices, deficit and debt, economic growth, border security, national defense, and the like? Socialist Democrat Doug Jones will vote wrong. Roy Moore will vote right. Hence, I will vote for Roy Moore.

I could say all the same things about Sen. Bob Menendez who is currently on trial in New Jersey for corruption. He may well get off, or at least get a mistrial based on a hung jury, but if he were to be convicted and forced to resign from the Senate, Im sure the person Gov. Chris Christie chose to replace him would vote wrong from my perspective on a whole lot more things than Menendez would.

Personally, though, Id prefer to see Menendez convicted because I think what hes done is every bit as wrong as what Virginia governor Bob McDonnell did, and I think the Supreme Court was wrong to overturn McDonnells conviction. Still, Im impure or partisan enough to hope that, were Menendez found guilty, it would be incoming Democratic governor Phil Murphy who would appoint a replacement for Menendez. I definitely understand the sentiment in favor of finding some way to save the Alabama seat for the Republicans.

Where I differ with Mo Brooks is, first, that I want Menendez held accountable for his actions and Im upset that the Supreme Courts leniency in the McDonnell case might prevent that from happening. In other words, my sense of right or wrong isnt compromised by any sense that I need to be a team player.

Secondly, while I might want to avoid the worst consequences o...

WikiLeaks Looks Like a Russian Front Organization "IndyWatch Feed"

On December 16th, Julian Assange or one of his assistants reached out to Donald Trump Jr. by direct message on Twitter and asked him to make a request of his father, who was then the president-elect. They knew that Australia wouldnt go along with it, but could Trump Sr. please suggest that Assange be appointed as the ambassador to the United States? This would send a message to Sweden, Australia and the U.K. to back off their legal cases.

As far as I can tell, this is the only communication WikiLeaks had with Donald Trump Jr. that didnt directly promote Russias interests.

Lets look at the first communication made via Twitter:

Just before the stroke of midnight on September 20, 2016, at the height of last years presidential election, the WikiLeaks Twitter account sent a private direct message to Donald Trump Jr., the Republican nominees oldest son and campaign surrogate. A PAC run anti-Trump site is about to launch, WikiLeaks wrote. The PAC is a recycled pro-Iraq war PAC. We have guessed the password. It is putintrump. See About for who is behind it. Any comments?

There are a host of issues raised by this communication, including legal questions about what laws may have been broken and by whom. But what stands out to me is that WikiLeaks was interested in something that linked Trump to Putin in a negative way. This was the subject that motivated them to make contact, and Donald Trump Jr. was the one who they thought would be the best person to arm with a stolen password.

The next communication came about a month later during the endgame of the campaign. In one sense, WikiLeaks was trolling for a scoop. They wanted to help neutralize a potential October Surprise by getting their hands on Trumps tax returns themselves before they could be released by an unfriendly source. But, on closer inspection, they primarily wanted the tax returns because it would rectify their reputation for pro-Trump bias and give more weight to the DNC and Podesta-hacked leaks they had been publishing on a rolling basis. Since Russia had procured the emails, this was clearly in Russias interest.

Hey Don. We have an unusual idea, WikiLeaks wrote on October 21, 2016. Leak us one or more of your fathers tax returns. WikiLeaks then laid out three reasons why this would benefit both the Trumps and WikiLeaks. One, The New York Times had already published a fragment of Trumps tax return......

What Kind of Economic Populism Is This? "IndyWatch Feed"

Theres a lot for Democrats not to like about President Trumps nominee to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Chief among then, I suppose, is that Alex Azar clerked for Antonin Scalia and served on Kenneth Starrs investigative team. But I also wonder how much Trumps own supporters should like this pick.

After all, Mr. Azar was until recently the president of Lilly USA, the biggest affiliate of Eli Lilly, a giant pharmaceutical corporation. And I dont recall candidate Trump telling his adoring hordes that the answer to our health care woes is to put Big Pharma in charge.

This is something Ive noticed quite a lot with Trump. Theres a basic disconnect between his rhetoric and his promises on the one hand, and the kind of people hes put in charge of key areas of our economy. It seems like a transparent fraud, and while it might not be met by immediate resistance from his base, theres no sense that hes actually working toward building a new kind of politics or a new kind of Republican Party based on concrete economic populism.

Everything seems restricted to grievance and prejudice, and that doesnt strike me as something that is going to win enduring allegiance, especially if there is an effort to transfer it to new candidates.

Its not quite that there cant be Trumpism without Trumpas people have been debating in recent daysits more that Trumpism doesnt actually exist.

Maybe Trump likes Mr. Azar because hes been an outspoken opponent of Obamacare, or maybe he chose him because he knew the Washington Post would call him a pragmatic pick since he is at least qualified and acceptable to Senate Republicans. But it isnt the kind of pick you make if youre serious about taking the side of your working class base against the rapacious pharmaceutical industry.

It shows how fake Trumps populism really is, and in this sense its no different than his picks of Steve Mnuchin and Gary Cohn to head up his economic team.

How the Republican Party Will Die "IndyWatch Feed"

Gabriel Sherman has done some outstanding reporting and gotten some major scoops, but when he says he has a source who claims that Steve Bannon predicted that Trump has only a thirty percent chance of completing his term, Im not sure if I can take that to the bank. I do know that Bannon is worried about it, because hes said that on the record. Either way, Frank Rich may be correct that it doesnt matter all that much because the Republican Party has been destroyed.

The idea that the pre-Trump GOP will make a post-Trump comeback to vanquish these forces is laughable. Old-line Establishment Republicans in the Senate and the House, even very conservative ones like [Sen. Jeff] Flake, are engaging in self-deportation, as Mitt Romney might say, rather than face a firing squad in the primaries. The Trumpists will with time expunge the rest, including Paul Ryan (whom Bannon has dismissed as a limp-dick motherfucker who was born in a petri dish at the Heritage Foundation, according to Joshua Green in The Devils Bargain). Its a replay of the purge of the 1960s, when the reinvented GOP shaped by Goldwater, Nixon, and the southern strategy shoved aside the likes of Nelson Rockefeller and George Romney. Given that 89 percent of Republicans voted for Trump in November and that 80 percent of todays GOP voters reliably give Trump favorable approval ratings no matter what he has said or done since, that means only a fifth of those Americans identifying as Republicans are (possibly) Never Trumpers.

If Rich is right about all that, then hes probably right about this, as well:

The remains of Establishment Republicanism are at best a Potemkin village. Its too little, too late for the Republican renovation project floated in October by the former George W. Bush speechwriter and passionate Never Trumper Michael Gerson, who imagined that John Kasich, Flake, Ben Sasse, and the like would dream up a compelling alternative to the Bannon appeal.&rdq...

Berlin wants more stick, less carrot for recalcitrant EU members (Like Poland) "IndyWatch Feed War"

Negotiations for the first post-Brexit EU budget will start in 2018. Germany will be the biggest contributor to the budget. Will it use its leverage to make recalcitrant member states like Poland behave differently?

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said earlier this year that the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) governments dismissal of an EU inquiry into its judicial changes were very worrying.

However much I want to have very good relations with Poland . . . we cannot simply hold our tongues and not say anything for the sake of peace and quiet. This is a serious issue, because the requirements for cooperation within the EU are the principles of the rule of law, Merkel said.

And Germany has leverage as the biggest contributor to the EU budget.

A German position paper from earlier this year notes an additional burden in order to finance new challenges in areas such as migration and security. Cuts will affect the future Multiannual Financial Framework [MMF] and its expenditures as a whole, the paper, which was adopted by Merkels government on May 11, reads.

The cohesion funds are EU funding for poorer regions. Poland is allocated a total of 86 billion ($98 billion) from various EU cohesion funds in the current seven-year EU budget that runs until 2020.

A net recipient

Poland is the biggest net recipient of EU funds in 2015 it got 13.4 billion from the EU. The EU budget will come under huge strain when the UK one of the biggest net contributors leaves.

In 2015, total EU spending in Poland was 13.358 billion, and a as a percentage of Polish gross national income (GNI) 3.25 percent. Polands total contribution to the EU budget was 3.718 billion, while the Polish contribution to the EU budget was 0.90 percent of its GNI.

Why Do We All Feel Like We're Losing? "IndyWatch Feed"

As David Brooks says in this essay, the reason some Evangelicals are rallying around Roy Moore is that they feel besieged by the rest of society, and when you are in a war for your very existence you can't worry about little things like decades-old allegations of molesting teenagers:

The siege mentality starts with a sense of collective victimhood. Its not just that our group has opponents. The whole culture or the whole world is irredeemably hostile.

From this flows a deep sense of pessimism. Things are bad now. Our enemies are growing stronger. And things are about to get worse. The world our children inherit will be horrific. The siege mentality floats on apocalyptic fear.

The odd thing is that the siege mentality feels kind of good to the people who grab on to it. It gives its proponents a straightforward way to interpret the world the noble us versus the powerful them. It gives them a clear sense of group membership and a clear social identity. It offers a ready explanation for the bad things that happen in life.

Most of all, it gives people a narrative to express their own superiority: We may be losing, but at least we are the holy remnant. We have the innocence of victimhood. We are martyrs in a spiteful world.
Nothing new about this, of course. To me the weird thing about America today is that activists of every sort seem to feel the same way: all the sides feel like they are in the same dangerous position, threatened by powerful enemies that are both nefarious and nebulous. As Brooks points out, a Pew Poll taken after the election found that 64 percent of Americans think their side has been losing most of the time.

To me the most important divide in America is the one between the people who feel besieged by dark forces and worry about the continued existence of what they believe in, and those who think that despite our problems things are basically ok. The reason both political parties are having so much trouble is that both are divided between complacent and revolutionary wings, with most of the energy at the extremes. This is especially true for Republicans, since a bigger part of their base seems to be up in arms. It's a bad situation for everyone because the large radical wings never really get their way, since even if they can dominate their own party they are still a minority in the nation, and that leaves them ever more embittered and ever more threatened.

I think the biggest political question for America now is, what is driving this widespread fear, and can we do anything about it? Part of it may be just because the country is close to evenly divided on a lot of issues, which leaves everybody feeling uncertain; it can't be true that every side is losing, bu...

Vulnerability in antivirus quarantine allows attacker to release malware "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Antivirus software flaw helps spread malware into your system

In todays computer-dependent society, hackers are a constant threat for all Internet users. Hence, we implement stronger measures such as installing an antivirus program to protect our computers from hackers, malicious software, malware, etc. But what will you do if the vulnerability in your antivirus allows malware to escape quarantine and infect your system? Scary, right?

Florian Bogner, a researcher with security firm Kapsch, has discovered an exploit that takes advantage of antivirus programs. Dubbed as AVGater, this exploit takes advantage of the restore from quarantine feature found on many antivirus programs, wherein the malware is relocated from an AV quarantine folder and stored on to another sensitive location.

For those unaware, quarantine is a secure storage that is used by an antivirus program to place a potentially malicious file detected by it. This feature allows the users to restore files that have been erroneously detected as malware, known as a false positive detection.

Bogner said in blog post that the exploit allows a user to remove a certain entry of malware from the quarantined folder and place it somewhere else on the targeted computer, allowing the malware to be executed. Bogner has also uploaded a video that gives more information on how the exploit works.

As explained in the video, a local attacker can manipulate the antivirus scanning engine to bring the malicious file out. Usually, a non-administrator user does not have access to write a file to system folders like Program Files or Windows, but by abusing a windows feature called NTFS file junction point allows the attacker to relay the file to a privileged directory, for instance, a folder within C:\Program Files or C:\Windows.

AVGater can be used to restore a previously quarantined file to any arbitrary file system location. This is possible because the restore process is most often carried out by the privileged AV Windows user mode service. Hence, file system ACLs [Access Control Lists] can be circumvented (as they dont really count for the SYSTEM user). This type of issue is called a privileged file write vulnerability and can be used to place a malicious DLL anywhere on the system, Bogner explained.

However, in order to execute the attack, the attacker must be physically present at the targeted PC, which is the most significant limitation of AVGater.

Prior to the disclosure of the exploit, Bogner repeated the attack in products of the firms including Kaspersky Lab, Malwareb...

COP23 video: Does Donald Trump make limiting global warming to 1.5C impossible? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Carbon Brief has been talking to a range of people attending COP23, the latest annual round of United Nations climate negotiations being held this year in Bonn, Germany.

The presidency of Donald Trump in the US has been a major talking point at COP23, given that he said in July that he intends to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement on climate change if he cannot negotiate better terms for his country.

One of the key aims of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to well below 2C. The deal added that, ideally, warming since the pre-industrial era should not breach 1.5C.

Given that the US is one of the worlds leading emitters of greenhouse gases, Carbon Brief asked delegates at COP23 whether they think Trumps presidency means the 1.5C goal is now impossible.

The video above contains the thoughts of

Dr Bill Hare, climate scientist and CEO of Climate Analytics: No, definitely notThe question is how long does US inaction go on forBut if Trump manages to get a diplomatic profile going on carbon-intensive development that could become a problem globally. (2:05-2:58)

Gene Therapy for Blindness May Soon Be Reality "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The success of a novel gene therapy for blindness caused by a genetic mutation paves the way for gene therapies which treat other forms of blindness as well as genetic therapies which treat other diseases.

After being treated with a novel gene therapy for blindness, patients who had lost their sight due to a genetic retinal disease could see well enough to navigate a maze, according to research presented today at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO 2017).

Novel Gene Therapy for Blindness

Patients in the study had a form of blindness called Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited degenerative retinal disease characterized by severe loss of vision at birth. This novel gene therapy for blindness is currently under review by the FDA for potential approval. There are no other FDA-approved treatments available for inherited retinal diseases.

Battle of Al Bu-Kamal and the funding of ISIS "IndyWatch Feed World"

Last week, the Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, reportedly fled across the border from the town of Rawa in Iraq to the last bastion of the Islamic State in Syria, the border town of Al Bu-Kamal. On Thursday, the Syrian government and allied militias announced victory in Al Bu-Kamal, but by late Friday, the Islamic State mounted a counter-offensive and recaptured the northern neighborhoods of the town. A question would naturally arise in the minds of curious observers of the war against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq that why would al-Baghdadi leave the relatively safer region of Anbar in Iraq for Al Bu-Kamal in Syria which is being heavily contested between the Syrian troops and the Islamic State jihadists? The Syrian troops and allied militias are mercilessly shelling the town and the counter-offensive of the jihadist group is equally fierce, with a large number of VBIEDs (vehicle-bound improvised explosive device) being used against the advancing troops. The only conclusion that can be drawn from this suicidal gambit by al-Baghdadi is that the self-styled caliph of the Islamic State has become tired of living the life of a fugitive on the run and has decided to fight to death in the last major stronghold of the so-called caliphate that spanned one-third of Syria and Iraq only a couple of years ago, in order to die as a martyr and a create a legend around his persona even after his death.

Bill Gates Invests $80 Million in Arizona "Smart City" "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Bill Gates is Buying Land in Arizona to Build a "Smart City"

An investment firm run by Bill Gates has put down $80 million to develop a planned community in Arizona. The 25,000 acres of land is about 45 minutes west of Phoenix, in an area called the West Valley. The community, which Gates wants to turn into a "smart city," will be named Belmont.

"Belmont will create a forward-thinking community with a communication and infrastructure spine that embraces cutting-edge technology, designed around high-speed digital networks, data centers, new manufacturing technologies and distribution models, autonomous vehicles and autonomous logistics hubs," Belmont Partners, the Arizona real state investment company involved in the deal, said in a news release.

The proposed freeway I-11, which would connect the Belmont area to Las Vegas, makes the land an ideal spot for a new community, according to Ronald Schott, the executive emeritus at the Arizona Technology Council. Of the 25,000 acres, 3,800 will be used for office, retail, and commercial space. Another 470 acres will be used for public schools. That leaves enough space for 80,000 residential units.

EU has serious concerns on Polish presidents court reforms "IndyWatch Feed War"

BRUSSELS (Reuters) The European Commission on Wednesday aired serious concerns over proposals by President Andrzej Duda to overhaul courts in Poland, signaling it would not back down in a dispute that has tarnished the reputation of the former communist country.

President Andrzej Duda

Long seen as a beacon of economic and political stability in the European Unions eastern wing, Poland has found itself increasingly in conflict with Brussels since the nationalist, eurosceptic and socially conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party swept to power in an election in late 2015.

PiS has been pressing deep changes to the Polish judiciary as well as other institutions, saying they are needed for a moral renewal of the country of 38 million people.

But opposition parties, rights groups, judges lobbies, the international watchdog Council of Europe, Polands western EU peers such as Germany and France and the blocs executive Commission say the changes erode judicial independence by bringing the courts under the direct control of the government.

Faced with EU pressure and mass street protests in Poland against the changes, Duda who hails from PiS himself unexpectedly blocked two of the governments judiciary reforms in July.

PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski

Polands president has a role in approving new legislation and Kaczynski has therefore held numerous meetings with Duda since then to break the stalemate.

But the European Commissions deputy head Frans Timmermans told the European Parliament on Wednesday that even the draft laws proposed by Duda which row back somewhat from the options for direct government interference in the judiciary provided by the original PiS bills were not acceptable.

At this preliminary stage of our assessment, the Commission already notes that certain...

Video and Photo Evidence Now Even More Easily Faked and Fabricated with AI "IndyWatch Feed World"

Makia Freeman, Contributor
Waking Times

Photo Evidence and video evidence has been relied on in academia, science, courts of law and elsewhere to prove or refute facts and theories but those days are coming to an end. We live in an historic era. Technological advances in the realm of computers and AI are taking place so rapidly that our world is being changed overnight. Now, software has been written that allows computers to create new faces that look like normal unique people but which are actually composite amalgams; to literally create and fabricate objects (from a basic sketch) and render them so lifelike that you wont be able to tell the difference between the fabricated ones and the real ones; and to remove entire objects from video footage in real time, and render in the empty space so well that it is undetectable to the eye. The days of being able to trust photo evidence and video evidence are disappearing and the implications for human knowledge are far reaching.

Another Leap Forward for Fake Realities

This is a significant leap from the (still shocking) software that was written to change video evidence last year in 2016. I refer to the German team that wrote a program able to change the mouth and words of a person speaking in a video. In their clip Face2Face: Real-time Face Capture and Reenactment of RGB Videos, they demonstrate how this works on video recordings of world leaders Bush, Obama and Putin. That was already a shake to the foundational core of what we can regard as evidence, legally and philosophically, but now only 1 year later there has been even more technological development allowing even more ability to fake reality on a grand scale.

The Daily Telegraph's effort to bully these Tory MPs has backfired spectacularly "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Seven years of wilfully loading the burden of austerity dogma onto the poor and ordinary whilst lavishing tax breaks and handouts on corporations and the mega-rich is proof that there is no such thing as a good Tory. However it's clear that some Tories are certainly a lot less bad than others.

There are around two dozen potential Tory rebels who are expressing opposition to the fanatically right-wing Blue-kip takeover of their party that is happening under Theresa May's leadership. They don't like the way Theresa May is being edged ever closer to the "no deal" Brexit cliff edge by the ideological fanatics in their party, and they have strong reservations about Theresa May's efforts to sideline parliament and give her ministers the power to rewrite thousands of UK laws with no parliamentary scrutiny whatever.

They're not actually trying to stop Brexit completely, but they are determined to prevent the economic catastrophe that a "no deal" flounce out of Europe would entail.

Take a listen to Ken Clarke's speech during the Brexit bill debate to get an idea of where these "rebel" Tory MPs are actually coming from.

Afghan opium output soars as cultivation hits record high "IndyWatch Feed War"

AFP/File / by Usman SHARIFI | Opium production in Afghanistan has soared to record levels according to the latest survey

KABUL (AFP)  Afghan opium producers have had a bumper year with output soaring 87 percent as the area under poppy cultivation hit a record high, the latest annual survey said Wednesday.

The price of opium as it left farms in war-torn Afghanistan this year soared by 55 percent to almost $1.4 billion, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said, helping to fuel the bloody insurgency.

Rising insecurity, lack of government control and corruption were among the key drivers along with unemployment and lack of education, according to the Afghanistan Opium Survey, jointly compiled by the UNODC and Afghanistans counter-narcotics ministry.

Image may contain: 3 people, beard, outdoor and nature

Potential opium production from this years harvest is estimated at 9,000 tons, up 87 percent from the 4,800 tons produced last year, boosted by increased cultivation and better yields.

Over the same period the area under poppy cultivation expanded by 63 percent to a record 328,000 hectares (810,500 acres) topping the previous record of 224,000 hectares in 2014 with the number of poppy-growing provinces jumping to 24.

Only 10 Afghan provinces are now considered poppy free.

The significant levels of opium poppy cultivation and illicit trafficking of opiates will probably further fuel instability, insurgency and increase funding to terrorist groups in Afghanistan, the report warned.

More high quality, low cost heroin will reach consumer markets across the world, with increased consumption and related harms as a likely consequence.

Strong increases in cultivation were recorded in almost all major poppy producing provinces, with restive Helmand in the south seeing the biggest rise of 79 percent.

Around 60 percent of the opium poppy cultivation took place in the southern provinces where the Taliban has a strong presence and virtually no eradication took place.

Helmand remained the top poppy-cultivating province, accounting for 44 percent of the total, followed by Kandahar, Badg...

How VoIP could take your businesss efficiency to a whole new level "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

A few years ago, we all marvelled at the idea of Apples very clever iMessage system that allowed us to send text messages via the internet rather than using a cellular network. Granted, its only truly a viable feature of the iPhone when youre hooked up to Wi-Fi but still it was a great, unique idea Wasnt it?

Well, actually, no it was not unique as we have had access to internet based communication for years you just hadnt heard of it or didnt think it was worth investing in at the time.

Voiceover Internet Protocol (or VoIP for short) is essentially a communication tool that uses an internet connection to relay the content instead of a complex wiring system that can take days to install and will forever require maintenance, upgrading, rehashing etc essentially, its far simpler but could it help your business? Could it be that important?

The most common VoIP devices are phones and fax machines that connect to the nearest computer with access to the internet or a specific network sounds simple enough. Calls, messages and documents can all be sent via the networked device and all information relating to the communications is stored on a secure server still sounding relatively simple.

To add a layer of complexity, we have now reached a technological level that allows us to carry out Cloud Calling. This is basically calling someone via the network/internet using a similar system to Skype or Facetime so how could it help your business?

VoIP could take your businesss efficiency to a whole new level thanks to its superb flexibility. As an example, if a key staff member is absent from work; the member of staff handling their work could be assigned their Cloud Phone Number without the need to arrange for tricky call forwarding or re-routing a phone line temporarily far more practical.

In addition, as communication data is recorded and stored, it makes it far easier to trace back conversations  than ever before. If youve ever worked in an office environment, youll know it can be very difficult to trace back who said what at any given time or during a meeting not a problem any longer.

Of course, Cloud VoIP is different to the standard VoIP system but they...

Democrats still trying to make vacuous Chelsea Clinton happen "IndyWatch Feed World"

Hasn't Bill Clinton been fellated thoroughly enough? Nina Burleigh spoke for a certain variety of 1990s-style feminist when she famously said that "American women should be lining up" - on their knees - in order to express their gratitude to Bill Clinton for "keeping theocracy off our backs." You all remember how close we were to theocracy back in the 1990s: California banned smoking in all bars, Chris Farley died of a cocaine-and-opiates overdose, Barry Switzer got canned . . . and . . . nothing like a theocracy was anywhere to be seen, heard of, or smelt. As much as the Democrats tried to cast Ken Starr as a modern-day Roger Chillingworth (if not a Torquemada), Bill Clinton wasn't in trouble for making the White House interns strap on their presidential kneepads: He was in trouble for perjury, an offense for which he was later obliged to surrender his law license. Clinton was guilty of everything he was accused of, and more. But he beat two Republicans when Democrats thought they were never going to win the presidency again, and he brought the Reagan era to an end. He did not actually do a hell of a lot as president - he just surfed the long wave of prosperity that had kicked off in the early 1980s - and much of what he did do was to enact Republican priorities: NAFTA (Republicans used to believe in free enterprise - look it up, kids!) and, grudgingly, welfare reform. He bitterly complained in private that he had come into office hoping to be Jack Kennedy but had been obliged to become Dwight Eisenhower.

Zimbabwe Coup in Process? "IndyWatch Feed War"

Explosions in the street-

Explosions echoed across central Harare and soldiers took over the headquarters of state broadcaster ZBC in a dramatic escalation of a dispute with President Robert Mugabe over political succession.
The former vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, had long been tipped as most likely successor to the 93-year-old president, but Mr Mugabe's 52-year-old wife Grace is now vying for the job.
A Reuters reporter witnessed six armoured personnel carriers on thoroughfares on the outskirts of the capital, Harare, and soldiers told passing cars to keep moving.
The presence of troops, including the movement of armoured vehicles from a barracks northwest of Harare earlier in the day, sparked rumours of a coup against Mr Mugabe, although there was no evidence to suggest Zimbabwe's leader of the last 37 years had been toppled.

State broadcaster taken over

Soldiers took over the headquarters of Zimbabwes ZBC state broadcaster in the early hours of Wednesday, two members of staff and a human rights worker said, compounding speculation of a coup against 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe.
Some ZBC members of staff were manhandled when soldiers occupied the premises, the sources said. However, staff were told they should not worry as the soldiers were merely there to protect the site, one source added.

You Do Not Understand Bitcoin: Readers Bite Back "IndyWatch Feed War"

For all the interest in cryptocurrencies, the bitcoin market remains small, with a relatively small number of participants expressing strong views

In 2017, one of the most divisive debates in financial markets centers around the rapid rise of bitcoin.

Judging by feedback on The Wall Street Journals recent articles about the cryptocurrency, the discussion is only getting more polarized.

True believers, emboldened by bitcoins more-than-500% surge this year, have fervently denounced any suggestion that this is just another financial market frenzy.

Naysayers, echoing prominent critics like J.P. Morgan Chase Chief Executive Jamie Dimon, are sticking to the view that bitcoin has become vastly overvalued. As evidence, they cite bitcoins periodic slumps, such as its recent more-than-25% plunge in four days.

You do not understand bitcoin.

WSJ reader Ken Brody, of Clearwater, Fla.

The fevered debate has been on full view after a WSJ article and video published last week posed the admittedly provocative question: Bitcoin: The Worlds Most Dramatic Bubble Ever?

Your article is not only nonsenseit is wrong, Homer Luther, a former money manager in Jackson, Wyo., who currently owns some bitcoin as well as several other cryptocurrencies, wrote in an email to the articles author. Your thesis is based on comparing bubbles that you dont know anything about, and then smugly associating bitcoin to past down markets without knowing anything about what happened in any of them.

Bitcoin-skeptics didnt mince words, either.

I spent over 30 years investigating Ponzi schemes, pyramid schemes, mortgage frauds bank frauds and exotic unregistered securities swindles, WSJ reader Mark Mathosian posted in the articles comments section. All I can say isget ready. this one will be big!

Another reader suggested bitcoins rise looks crazy only to those who have missed out.

Liberals Sudden Concern About Bill Clintons Behavior Is Cynical And Self-Serving "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In the past few days a number of notable liberals have decided to take allegations of sexual assault against former president Bill Clinton seriously. Lets just say that discarding the Clintons when theyre no longer politically useful to retroactively grab the higher moral ground isnt exactly an act of heroism. But if were going to re-litigate history, lets get it right.

That so many women have summoned the courage to make public their allegations against Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roger Ailes, and Bill OReillyor that many have come to reconsider some of the claims made against Bill Clintonrepresents a cultural passage, says David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker (my italics). It takes plenty of courage to face powerful men with sexual assault allegations. But how much courage needs to be summoned to reconsider Bill Clintons behavior now, more than 20 years after we first learned about it? Zero. Democrats pay no political price for going after the former president, nor will Clinton face any consequences.

In The New York Times, Michelle Goldberg spends around 75 percent of her column titled I Believe Juanita rationalizing why it was okay not to believe Juanita Broaddrick, who credibly accused Bill Clinton of rape decades ago. You wont be surprised to learn that Goldberg faults conservatives because their hardball politics and conspiracy-mongering provoked skepticism among liberals excuses that will be awfully familiar to anyone following the justification of Roy Moores supporters.

One problem with Goldbergs contention is that the Broaddrick allegation was uncovered by NBC News, not Richard Scaife. Well, specifically, it was uncovered by NBC News after the network sat on the story throughout the impeachment proceedings against the president. According to the network, the story had to be put through an arduous factchecking process that included figuring out where Clinton had been the day of the alleged rape something that had been worked out in a few days time.

Then again, the myth that most of the media was enthusiastic about uncovering damaging stories relating to Clintons background persists today. The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, for e...

I Calculated Ethnic Groups Rates Of U.S. Terrorism. Here Are The Results "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Given that a vanishingly small portion of Americans know anything about Uzbekistan, and that the country rarely appears in our news, most Americans will only remember Uzbeks if they were in the news for something bad in the past. Lo and behold, a number of commentators have perceptively noted that a strangely large number of people from Uzbekistan have been charged with terrorism-related offenses against the United States.

Oh, and, while there are no official figures for Uzbekistan, experts believe a substantial number of Uzbeks have joined ISIS, and its neighboring Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyz Republic all have elevated levels of ISIS recruitment. Indeed, many ISIS members from Kyrgyzstan may actually be ethnically Uzbek.

Given all of this, some Americans may think it prudent to have concerns about Uzbek immigrants. But media reports are a poor basis for determining national security policy. We shouldnt be making immigration or homeland security decisions based on the anecdotes news outlets provide, or in the hysteria surrounding potentially one-off events. Whether gun violence or terrorism, we need a rational, fact-based approach to cut through the media noise and determine where the real risks lie. It turns out, there is quite a bit of data available.

So Lets Look at that Data in Detail

The New America Foundation produces a comprehensive list of individuals charged or convicted of terror-related offenses from 2001 to today. This list provides basic citizenship data, but, more importantly, it provides names and other identifying information that can be used, with the help of some googling, to look up even more detailed biographic data on each alleged terrorist. Most people concerned about imported terrorism threats are not only concerned with foreign passport-holders, but also the second or third generation descended...

6 Reasons The Individual Mandate Deal Is Rotten Health Policy "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

After their member lunch Tuesday, Senate Republican leadership announced they would work to include a repeal of Obamacares individual mandate as part of tax reform. The Senate leaders also announced they would bring the Obamacare stability legislation written by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Patty Murray (D-WA) to the floor for a vote.

Repealing Obamacares tax on individuals who do not buy health coverage, and using the proceeds to reduce taxes overall, may represent sound tax policy. However, for several reasons, both the mandate repeal, and the stability legislation linked to it, represent unsound health policy.

1. This Will Raise Premiums

Due to Senate procedural concerns, the tax reform bill cannot include legislative proposals within the purview of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and House Energy and Commerce Committee. These two committees would have jurisdiction over any actions to repeal, waive, or otherwise relax Obamacares onerous regulatory regime.

For these reasons, a tax reform bill repealing the individual mandate cannot repeal the regulations that caused premiums to more than double over the past four years, and necessitated the mandate in the first place. As I previously noted, repealing a penalty that encourages healthy people to purchase insurance, while retaining the regulations that have attracted a sicker-than-average population to Obamacares insurance exchanges, will raise premiumsthe only question is by how much.

2. It Bails Out InsurersAnd Obamacare

The stability legislation would provide two years of cost-sharing reduction (CSR) subsidies to health insurers, which reimburse them for the cost of discounting deductibles and co-payments to certain insurers. Three years ago, the House of Representatives sued the Obama administration challenging the constitutionality of these payments, which the House contended were being made without an explicit appropriation from Congress.

In May 2016, Judge Rosemary Collyer agreed. While she stayed her ruling stopping the payments while the Obama administration appealed, the Trump administration used her logicthat the payments lacked a constitutional appropriationto halt the payments unilaterally last mo...

Reckoning Attempts Display A Left Still Unable To Face Bill Clintons Alleged Sex Crimes "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It is fascinating and welcome to see liberals discovering their consciences on Bill Clintons alleged rapist tendencies. True, this moral revelation comes about two decades later than it should have, and at precisely the moment the Left can no longer reasonably ignore it and not a moment sooner.

Just the same, it is nice to finally see some honesty on this issue. It is nice to see liberals, having no more use for the Clintons, finally undertaking what MSNBC host Chris Hayes calls a real reckoning with the very real possibility that Bill Clinton raped Juanita Broaddrick nearly 40 years ago.

And yet. One is tempted to believe were witnessing not a reckoning but a quick and guilty kind of moral shrug, a sort of Kansas City shuffle meant to absolve a bunch of deeply culpable people of their own deep and stinking culpability. For a real reckoning of American liberalisms wink-nod approach to Bill Clintons alleged sex crimes would implicate American liberalism itself, or at least the last few decades of it. That is understandably not something many liberals are willing to do.

Still Too Scared to Face Themselves In the Mirror

A great example of this evasive genre can be found at The Atlantic, where Caitlin Flanagan has written an article titled, simply, Bill Clinton: A Reckoning. The article itself is actually not a reckoning of Bill Clinton or even an overture toward a reckoning.

Indeed, Flanagan only comes to the sexual assault allegations leveled at Clinton only about two-thirds of the way through, after bringing up Clarence Thomass alleged sexual harassment of Anita Hill. She places most of the blame for Clinton on machine feminism rather than Democratic opportunism, then lamely asserts Democrats need to come to terms with how they abandoned some of [their] central principles in their unthinking defense of Clinton.

At The New York Times, columnist Michelle Goldberg offers a similar pastiche of self-serving pseudo-reflection. I Believe Juanita, her most recent column declares upfront. After that she spends a great deal of time grumbling about Breitbart, the rights evident bad faith, right-wing propaganda, the right-wing press, epistemological warfare, and various figures in conservative media. Only after six paragraphs do we get to Broaddrick, after which Goldberg quickly returns to the conservative-led blizzard of lies that led progressives to doubt Broaddri...

Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) Defended by Technology Giants, by Small Companies, by US Congress and by Judges, So Why Does USPTO Make It Less Accessible? "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Its not like the Patent Office desperately needs more money (theres excess)

United States Patent and Trademark Office
Reference: United States Patent and Trademark Office at Wikipedia

Summary: In spite of the popularity of PTAB and the growing need/demand for it, the US patent system is apparently determined to help it discriminate against poor petitioners (who probably need PTAB the most)

LAST week the US government dealt with a serious issue we had been writing about for a number of months. CCIA, as it turns out, submitted a letter to the House Judiciary Subcommittee On IP [sic] and yesterday wrote this post:

Yesterday, we submitted a letter for the record to the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee On Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet. This letter, written in response to testimony submitted for the Subcommittees hearing on Sovereign Immunity and IP, provides the details of our analysis of the patents which Josh Malone and Phil Johnson identified as showing a disagreement on validity between the PTAB and federal courts. In contrast to their allegation of 200 patents, the real figure is far lower. Of the 3,056 patents reviewed by the PTAB which were also at issue in litigation in federal district courts, there are 43 cases (just over 1%) in which the PTAB and a district court have disagreed with one another.

The data, when correctly understood, shows that the PTAB only rarely disagrees with the federal courts when both review the validity of the same patent. The data also shows that the two venues only rarely review the validity of the same patent. We believe the Subcommittees work will benefit from this understanding of the extreme infrequency with which the PTAB and a district court reach different conclusions.

Additionally, based on information that William New wrote about...

Why Talking To Russia Is Good For America "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Last Friday, President Trumps Asia trip took him to Vietnam for a meeting with regional leaders. None other than Russias head of state Vladimir Putin was in Vietnam, too. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the president thought it would be a good idea to talk with Putin.

This makes sense, especially on the topic of North Korea. The United States, Russia, and China share the same interest of a non-nuclear Korean Peninsula. But North Korea is stalling on diplomacy until it has the bargaining power of a warhead that can hit America. Before this happens, the Trump administration needs Russia and China to apply enough pressure on North Korea, at least by not providing the Kim regime an escape route, so North Korea comes to the diplomatic table.

In the words of Stephen Hadley, a former national security advisor to George W. Bush, The more China squeezes North Korea, the more potential there is that the North Koreans turn toward Russia I dont think [Russia and the Trump administration] are on the same page at this point, and that is why I think it is important for Trump to see both [Chinese President] Xi and Putin.

Anonymous Trump administration officials, however, found it distasteful that President Trump would meet with Putin. This faction, which includes interventionists in both parties, seems to view Putin in moralistic terms. And President Trump has come under fierce scrutiny for daring to meet with Russias president earlier this year. Possibly bowing to pressure, Trump and Tillerson backed down from a formal meeting. Trump and Putin did chat informally, but the two leaders failed to sit down and hammer out the big issues due to scheduling conflicts.

This is a terrible mistake. Russia isnt the Soviet Union, and Putin is no Stalin. Either way, we talked to both the Soviet Union and the murderous Stalin. There is nothing wrong with talking to Russiaunless, of course, you think Trump is involved in a conspiracy with the Kremlin.

Making It Impossible to Talk to Russia

True to form, most of the American medias questions directed at President Trump after his Vietnam summit involved the moments he was seen chatting with Putin. When asked what the two lead...

These 3 Student Data Bills Could Ruin Your Kids Life "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

For years, I researched and wrote about the State Longitudinal Database Systems (SLDS) here in Oklahoma and across the nation (here, here and here), warning that these ill-advised legislative efforts to codify transparency and accountability in public schools would end up creating what could only be considered a national database.

In 2013 I testified before our state legislature on the dangers of SLDS, which are a system of interconnected state data streams that flow into a giant federal data river collecting information starting when small humans enter the public school system. Sorry, but I dont happen to believe that lifelong surveillance and surveillance-based manipulation of my choices should be the price of a public education. Nobody needs his preschool discipline records following him for life because some data company in cahoots with the governmentwell beyond my controlwants to plunder education records to make a buck.

The arguments I used then remain valid today: there is no way to provide either the bureaucracy-driven transparency or accountability government officials now desire for public education without collecting countless data points of information on nearly every facet of a students life.  Of course, that is exactly what schools do today: collect endless reams of data.

Is Your Kids Religion the Governments Business?

Sadly, states (including Oklahoma) have had only varying degrees of success stopping some of the unbelievable amounts of data being collected on public school students. When I say unbelievable amounts, I have actual screen shots from the National Center for Education Statistics National Education Data Model (no longer online, incidentally), which provided model data points to be collected from students for very important educational information like routine health care procedure required at school, number of teeth, orthodontic appliances, voting status, religious affiliation (these two being big no-nos in the world of data collection), weeks of gestation, and weight at birth.

The Common Education Data Standards, a one-stop A-Z data collecting shop where anyone can see the possible data collection titles populating public school SLDS, are still online....

SCOTUS To Review Law Forcing Pro-Life Centers To Promote Abortion "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

In 2015, California passed a law forcing privately funded pro-life pregnancy centers to promote taxpayer-funded abortions, threatening crippling fines for noncompliance. That edict is now under review by the Supreme Court.

The Monday announcement that SCOTUS will hear pro-lifers challenge to the so-called Reproductive FACT Act comes just two weeks after a California superior court judge granted an injunction against the law on grounds that it violates the states Declaration of Rights.

Now, a long-fought battle to keep the Golden State from forcing its pro-life citizens to choose between obeying conscience or the law of the land is on its way to Washington DC for a final decision in National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra.

By Gods grace, we now have an opportunity to secure a win for free speech and freedom of conscience at the Supreme Court, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which is representing NIFLA in the case, wrote in an email alert Monday morning. And a victory could protect pro-life pregnancy centers nationwide from becoming forced mouthpieces for Big Abortions message of death.

Refer Customers to Your Moral Enemy

The law, which was pushed through on a strictly party-line vote from state Democrats and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, withstood the scrutiny of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals last October. The Ninth Circuit, however, has a reputation as the nations most-reversed court, with as many as 86 percent of its cases overturned by the Supreme Court in a single year.

While it has only been enforced in one jurisdictionthe City of Los Angelesthe law has since served as a template for a 2017 mandate in Hawaii, which would likely be affected by the Supreme Courts forthcoming decision. In July, a judge in Illinois placed a statewide preliminary injunction on a 2016 law that would have forced medical professionalsincluding pro-life doctors, nurses, and pregnancy center personnelto refer patients to abortion businesses.

Californias threat to pro-life pregnancy care centers and medical clinics counts among the most flagrant violations of constitutional religious and free speech rights in the nation, Thomas Glessner, J.D., president of NIFLA, said in a statement Monday. The implications of the Supreme Courts decision in this case...

The Child Tax Credit Will Make Or Break Success For Tax Reform "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The contentious alliance between Republicans in Congress and the White House has been held together with pixie dust and the promise of tax reform. If the administration and congressional leaders dont go to bat for an improved child tax credit, theyll be forced to rely on Tinker Bell to keep the first half of the Trump presidency from ending in a stalemate and a political crackup.

With a tight window before the 2018 congressional campaigns begin in earnest, Republicans establishment and populist alikeneed to deliver a win. A plan that simply focuses on lower rates for business and high earners will not have the popular support to get across the finish line, nor should it deserve to. Ensuring that a substantial expansion of the child tax credit (CTC)not just in its dollar amount, but in the way it is appliedis a part of the final tax reform package should be a non-negotiable for conservatives of all stripes, ensuring that tax reform meaningfully helps middle-class American families.

An Improved Child Tax Credit Helps Middle America

As a quick refresher, the CTC is currently set at $1,000 per child and directly deducted from the amount a taxpayer owes. The CTC is partially refundable, and phases in after a taxpayer hits the minimum earnings threshold of $3,000. A family with two kids, for example, needs to make $16,333 in annual yearnings to receive the full $2,000 credit. The credit starts to fade out when adjusted gross income reaches $110,000 for married couples filing jointly.

The structure of the CTC make it an ideal way to target tax relief for low- and middle-income families. Its limitations can be easily adjusted to make it an even better tool for boosting the fortunes of working-class American parents and their children. In 2011, an estimated 29 percent of children under three were in families ineligible for the full CTC due to its limited refundability.

Its clear that the credits overall value should be raised. Inflation has eaten away nearly one-third of the credits value since it was set in 2001, and increasing it substantially would recognize the costs associated with raising a child and the importance of investing in Americas children. But absent other changes, merely increasing the total amount of credit will only benefit upper-middle income families who earn enough to capture the full amount of the credit....

Biden: Hero Who Stopped Texas Church Shooter Was Wrong To Have A Gun "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

During a question and answer session on NBCs Today show, former vice president and rumored presidential 2020 contender Joe Biden said the hero who stopped the Texas church shooter earlier this month should not have been allowed to carry an AR-15.

With the tragedy that just happened in Texas, how do you justify the Democratic view on gun control when the shooter was stopped by a man who was legally licensed to carry a gun? a young woman in the audience asked Biden.

Well first of all, the kind of gun being carried he shouldnt be carrying, Biden said. I wrote the last serious gun control law . . and it outlawed assault weapons and outlawed weapons with magazines that held a whole lotta bullets so you could kill a lot of people a whole lot more quickly.

Assault weapon is a nonsense term not usable in legislation, since it could apply to any object used to attack another person. An assault rifle generally means a select-fire or automatic rifle with an intermediate cartridge designed for military use. The AR-15 is not an assault rifle, most clearly because it is semiautomatic. Civilians are already banned from owning automatic weapons.

The Texas man who stopped the shooter from killing more people used an AR-15 to confront the alleged murderer, who wore a ballistic vest and was armed with tactical gear and a rifle of equal firepower.

If I had run out of the house with a pistol and faced a bulletproof vest and kevlar and helmets, it might have been futile, Stephen Willeford told CRTV in an interview last week. I ran out with an AR-15 and thats what he was shooting the place up with.

Biden apparently doesnt think guns are useful for self-defense and protecting others, even though police and soldiers cant stop bad guys without guns, and neither can private citizens. Public records are replete with instances of private citizens enjoying protection against evil when armed.

Its just rational to say certain people shouldnt have guns, Biden insisted, however. The fact that some people with guns are legally able to acquire a gun and they...

BATR: Brexit Defiance of the EU "IndyWatch Feed World"

Brexit Defiance of the EU

The UK media is out in force to scare Brits from voting to leave the European Union. Thursday June 23: Date of the in/out referendum is set for the vote. Just the notion that an actual plebiscite will take place on such an important issue, is encouraging. Proponents of exiting the EU are natural allies in the struggle to promote national populism. The long and distinguished history of England has an opportunity to show the world that the voice of the people can register a resounding repudiation against the technocrats of an unelected European Union.

So it is refreshing to hear from a City of London bank remarks that run contrary to the official pleas to stay within the EU. Britain could BENEFIT by leaving the EU, says Barclays: Bank believes worst effects of a Brexit would be felt in Europe is a rare statement of what is best for England.

The report by Barclays experts added that Britain could become a safe haven from a disintegrating Europe, giving investors shelter from problems with the euro.

If politics in the EU turned for the worse, the UK may be seen as a safe haven from those risks, it said. But the bank also warned that if the referendum favours exit, it could lead to the collapse of the EU itself.

Analyst Philippe Gudin said: The referendum is generally seen as a UK issue when it is better seen as a European issue.

He warned that the political and institutional aftershocks of a leave vote were far greater than the economic fears.

Mr Gudin added that if Britain voted to quit, it would encourage other EU member states to think about leaving amid the migration crisis.

Even the Queen has no interest in her country remaining in the defunct, corrupt, and completely inept European Union. But before rejoicing that common sense has returned to the British...
